Naga Joloka... do you know what Naga means?

hushed basalt

I'm going to have to revert my HA config to a snapshot. I think 109 has ruined by setup

last plaza

Naga means Snake

I don’t

God bless snapshots on filesystems

green inlet

That’s some good sauce if you can find it

last plaza

meaning - it would be as potent as a snake venom

Keeps me young

we have SO many varieties of spicy stuff at home - mostly home made, folks will bleed if they sniff

And the wife happy if you know what I mean🤣

can i somehow use my iPhone as a proximity sensor, so for example, a door could unlock when i get close to it?

Anyone have a minute to help me with an integration question re emulated_hue?

green inlet

They will hook you up

I asked there earlier.

Go there now....I will try

scenic radish

actual good networking equipment supposed to arrive tomorrow 🎉

#

now i can really stop bitching about my google wifi

#

oh shit and i have a perfect spot to mount the AP on the wall

green inlet
#

It’s the little things in life right

scenic radish
#

indeed.

#

it will be at the top of a wall in a closet but it should be better than where it's at now

#

i'm thinking moving it from 2' to 7' and -1 wall will help a bit with signal

#

i already don't have a signal issue though since i'm in a ~1000 sq ft condo

hushed basalt
#

What are you getting

scenic radish
#

ER-x + unifi AP-AC Lite

shy comet
#

thats waht i got

#

except i got 2 lites

scenic radish
#

inb4 BUT IT'S ONLY HALF DUPLEX WITH GIGABIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shy comet
#

lol

#

i ended up adding on a 24 port switch lol

scenic radish
#

looks like the ac lite comes with a 12W poe adapter?

#

if so... this means i might not need to buy a higher rated power supply for the ER-x to power the AP via PoE

#

because i might be able to just use the adapter that comes with the AP

shy comet
#

thats exactly how i powered mine

scenic radish
#

sweet, so you can use the AP adapter with the ER-x?

shy comet
#

yup 🙂

scenic radish
#

dude.

#

that is awesome.

#

i'm so excited right now lol

#

that means i can mount the AP where i want to tomorrow

shy comet
#

yea i was pretty happy when i set mine up

#

it kinda solved multiple issues with things updating slow etc...

#

normal routers cant hang when you have like 50+ wireless clients lol

velvet horizonBOT
scenic radish
#

yeah i don't have quite that many clients but i wanted a better router, and i can't use my google wifi as an AP because i wouldn't be able to create a guest network with it in bridge mode

#

yikes

shy comet
#

yea lol

#

youll get there eventually

#

my old nighthawk hated it when i tried to load multiple camera streams at once

would literally reboot over high load

I'll try a shorter version 🙂 I recently changed the IP of my HA box. Now I get
" You're about to give http://192.168.50.50:8123/ access to your Home Assistant instance.

Logging in with Home Assistant Local.Invalid username or password " on the web interface and my UN/PW doesn't work. Any ideas?

scenic radish

how did you install home assistant?

#

no home assistant support here, so i'd like to redirect you to the right channel

wet pilot
#

Cookie issue?

#

Not sure where that would go

obsidian lark
#

@wet pilot I tried another browser in incognito without luck.

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet going to do the next project with 2815 led's 🙂

obsidian lark
#

I'll post somewhere else - thanks!

hushed basalt
#

@scenic radish the power supply is an injector

#

So you just run your cat cable from the injector to your AP

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze where you gonna put it?

hushed basalt
#

It's not a power supply that you plug in directly to the AP

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet pergola and master back lighting.

scenic radish
#

@hushed basalt right, the ER-x has PoE In and PoE passthrough

green inlet
#

For home use, edgerouter-x is the bomb. Did the wife give up something for the wedding to allow you to get it 😀

hushed basalt
#

As long as it's powerful enough you can do that

green inlet

hushed basalt

green inlet
#

You doing the bedposts?

tidal bronze
#

@scenic radish you gonna love the ERX 🙂

scenic radish
#

@hushed basalt yes, i believe it is

#

good to hear quad! i've heard good things. it'll be a nice upgrade

dreamy vortex
#

is there like a write-up on what the difference between hassio and homeassistant is?

scenic radish
#

hassio == the old name for what is now home assistant

#

Home Assistant == Hassio
Home Assistant Supervised == "Generic linux install"
Home Assistant Core == venv
Home Assistant Core on Docker == docker

tidal bronze
#

@green inlet no back drop step ceiling

dreamy vortex
#

is there any way to get the "supervisor" part on a docker install of homeassistant?

molten osprey
#

I love that we're still struggling with the naming 😉

dreamy vortex
#

I had no idea I was not getting the useful one that everyone write guides for when I went with homeassistant/home-assistant docker image

tidal bronze
#

Next month will be something new for sure

green inlet
#

Useful is subjective

scenic radish
#

no, you'd need to run the (now potentially deprecated) Supervised install to get something like that

dreamy vortex
#

useful == being able to install addons from git repos without some filesystem shenanigans

#

useful == being able to do backups from within the UI

green inlet
#

Go core docker or Venv......it’s what all the cool kids are doing

dreamy vortex
#

I am using core docker I guess.

green inlet
#

Chicks will dig you more

dreamy vortex
#

but it does not have the addon installer from a repo or any way to do backups from the UI

scenic radish
#

all you need to do is backup the /config dir

green inlet
#

No, but all that is possible

scenic radish
#

and most addons (except ones that have special application to home assistant like the SSH and web terminal addon) exist as regular docker containers

green inlet
#

If all comes down to time. And learning curve. Do you want to put the time in to really learn or you want point and click

scenic radish
#

actually @hushed basalt it looks like i could power the ER-x with the PoE injector via eth0 with WAN on eth1. i'll just have my switch on eth0

#

eth0 is the PoE input

dreamy vortex
#

I am running zigbee2mqtt (docker), mosquitto (docker), homeassistant (docker) and have automated backups etc already setup. I am just trying to understand why the confusion and why the one I installed does not have all the features of the (I guess deprecated) version

scenic radish
#

because the docker and venv installs are home assistant core only

obsidian lark
#

Any suggestions on which channel to post an issue with login? I'd like to avoid spamming but I can't decide if it's a frontend issue or something else

scenic radish
#

Supervised and Home Assistant (previously Hassio) are core + extra functionality

dreamy vortex
#

so why can't you add that functionality onto the core version?

#

that I guess I am running

green inlet
#

You can, just not point and click

#

You can do everything and more

dreamy vortex
#

if there a writeup on that somewhere I can go read?

green inlet
#

Just have to do it without supervisor and add-one

scenic radish
green inlet
#

On what?

scenic radish
#

login issue related to changing the server's LAN IP

green inlet
#

They are individual depending on what you want to do

#

Add-ons and supervised give you point and click installations

#

But sounds like you are well on your way with a core install

scenic radish
#

@dreamy vortex you can't manually add the supervisor functions to a docker install. i think what pdobrien is saying is that you can find docker containers for add-ons and install them alongside your home assistant docker install

dreamy vortex
#

I found the recent blog post linked on the supervisor repo. reading now.

scenic radish
#

i'm not a dev so i don't know the details, but the Supervised install involves more than just the Supervisor docker container (there are a few others: DNS, audio, etc). It's expecting a very specific setup that's only possible with that install method

#

that's all i'm gonna say though because i don't want to spread misinformation

tidal bronze
#

@scenic radish so what are you getting ERX and?

scenic radish
#

AP AC lite

tidal bronze
#

nice

hushed basalt
#

@scenic radish you could just put your poe injector on your wan line

scenic radish
#

Oh right

#

I was overthinking things in my excitement

hushed basalt
#

I think that poe in on wan becomes more annoying if you're using like a GPON that needs POE in on the wan out

#

Then you end up needing like two poe injectors back to back lol

scenic radish
#

Ugh

#

This will be the perfect use for my unopened 6" patch cable lol

tidal bronze
#

why poe pass-thru?

hushed basalt
#

One less power brick needed?

scenic radish
#

Yup

hushed basalt
#

It adds up

scenic radish
#

And the AP can only be powered by PoE

tidal bronze
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

Powerboards and bricks and cables take up a lot of space

scenic radish
#

Especially with my setup...

hushed basalt
#

One shelf in my cabinet is devoted entirely to all of that stuff

scenic radish
#

I'm seriously way too hyped about this

#

Tomorrow's gonna be like Christmas

hushed basalt
#

Can you mount the AP on the ceiling

scenic radish
#

Nope, concrete plank ceiling

#

Gonna mount it on the wall inside a closet though

dreamy vortex
#

I understand what happened now. sad that the addon manager and the backups got dumped because of the supervisor dying off.

wet pilot
#

Waps typically produce a cardiod pattern

scenic radish
#

Only with the generic Linux install

wet pilot
#

Not a lot of projection behind it

scenic radish
#

Still possible with the Home Assistant OS image

#

Ah so maybe not a good idea on a wall then

tidal bronze
#

@wet pilot cardiod 🙂 So good to hear that

dreamy vortex
#

yeah, I am running all this on an old macbook pro running arch. I don't want to run a vm or reinstall the OS just for this

scenic radish
#

Dammit phnx

tidal bronze
#

Ideally will have to go on ceiling

hushed basalt
#

Are the lights in your ceiling run with conduit inside the concrete

tidal bronze
#

Get some wiremold knockoffs from amazon and do it right.

wet pilot
#

@scenic radish inverted on a table would be better

#

Glowy side up

tidal bronze
#

lol

#

yep

hushed basalt
#

Mine is on a table atm :(

tidal bronze
#

area you are trying to cover? @scenic radish

scenic radish
#

Guess I'll just leave it where it's at now :/

hushed basalt
#

Desk height or lower

scenic radish
#

1000 sq ft

hushed basalt
#

What are you walls made of

tidal bronze
#

You should be good on the wall

hushed basalt
#

Mine walls are brick and the floors are concrete. My ac lite is very limited

#

I really need 2 or 3 even though it's only a very small townhouse

scenic radish
#

Drywall

tidal bronze
#

Try the wall might be good enough on outer edges

hushed basalt
#

You could mount it in the corner of the ceiling

#

So you only have a tiny amount of cable from the top of the drywall to the AP

#

Which you'd never see

scenic radish
#

Yeah I might do that. The closet has a drywall drop ceiling so worst case scenario a short amount of cable would be exposed but not visible because of the door

#

Yeah I'll just ceiling mount it, no big

tidal bronze
#

Never used a lite, don't know the actual performance but don't think it's going to be such a big deal. 🙂

hushed basalt
#

They're very good value

scenic radish
#

867 Mbps on 5 GHz, more than I need tbh

hushed basalt
#

And more than fine for providing wifi to phones and tablets

#

Just don't try to copy TBs to your server with them

scenic radish
#

Lol I don't do anything like that. Server, desktop, etc. are all wired anyway

tidal bronze
#

My fav from the bunch is AP AC LR.

#

Better than SHD on 2.4 range

hushed basalt
#

Just get all of them

tidal bronze
#

I do have all of them 🙂

hushed basalt
#

Cover your walls and ceilings in APs

#

Claim it as insulation value

tidal bronze
#

Still think it's not enough.

hushed basalt
#

Plus surface heating

tidal bronze
#

SHD + 2 x AC PRO + AC LR + 2 x AC MESH at home. Still need better coverage on the edges of the backyard.

hushed basalt
#

Directional APs may be better for outdoors

#

Do unifi make those that aren't PtP

tidal bronze
#

I like the AC mesh units. Just need one more and I should be good.

hushed basalt
#

What are they designed for

#

Are they more for outdoors

#

And do they work with backhauls or only mesh

#

They look pretty expensive

tidal bronze
#

More for outdoors. I have POE running to all them. Just like the form factor.

hushed basalt
#

They look nice

tidal bronze
#

Blends nicely

molten osprey
#

I had an ISP sales rep try to sell me on their "mesh package" ... which came with 1 access point

#

I tried to get him to explain the point of having the "mesh router" if i just had a single one

#

endless talk, zero information

#

dont think he knew what 'mesh' is

hushed basalt
#

Sales people are the worst

#

I have zero interest talking to any sales "rep" who doesn't understand the product/service

scenic radish
#

Meh. Maybe I'll just leave it on the entertainment center it's on now

#

Thought it'd be cool for it to be hidden

hushed basalt
#

Out in the open is nice

#

Especially on the ceiling

#

But if you leave it on your entertainment centre it might be too close to other radio polluters

#

But see how you go

#

You can always move it later

scenic radish
#

Guess I could try the ceiling. Worst case, I remove it and put it on the entertainment center and who cares about the holes because it's a closet

tidal bronze
#

You can test out a few locations with 3m gel tape. Finalize later.

scenic radish
#

Tru

#

Would still need a single hole for Ethernet but whatever

tidal bronze
#

I tested before mounting. Range and overlap.

scenic radish
#

Yeah, that's a good idea

#

I love that shit anyway

tidal bronze
#

Yep good stuff.

scenic radish
#

how many times can I fuck around with positioning of this item before I'm satisfied

tidal bronze

Lol.

I gave up on perfection long time ago.

Alright, giving borderlands 3 another try after being kind of disappointed by it

#

Borderlands 2 was so good

#

1 was also good

#

Oh wait. I forgot I was pissed that certain characters were killed for no apparent reason.

hushed basalt
#

Did you try to not let them die

#

Deus Ex was good like that, you could pretty much save or kill any main character

#

And it would change the story

ocean mirage
#

Its been so long since I played it

hushed basalt
#

A friend asked me what it was

#

I basically said skyrim set in the future

ocean mirage
#

The thing I remember the most clearly is when I lost it laughing cause one of the bosses is like ||I am the same as you but I got a firmware update get rekt||

#

What similarities are you drawing with skyrim

hushed basalt
#

I AM ON THE DEV BRANCH

ocean mirage
#

haha

hushed basalt

#

In a way

ocean mirage
#

Deus Ex isnt really open world isit

ocean mirage
#

I don't have the brain or patience for that, I assume

hushed basalt
#

Did you ever play minecraft

ocean mirage
#

Yeah a fair bit over the years

scenic radish
#

I loved Minecraft

ocean mirage
#

yeah it'd be nice to be able to enjoy it for the first time again

#

10 years gone from that

scenic radish
#

Bought a fish tape a couple of years ago for one specific project. I knew it would continue to come in handy

ocean mirage
#

how are you terminating it on the janky side?

scenic radish
#

Which is the janky side

ocean mirage
#

the round hole

scenic radish
#

I'm gonna put an AP there

ocean mirage
#

ohh I see

#

not the janky side then really

#

I thought you were maybe doing what I am doing which is janky

scenic radish
#

Yeah conveniently it's on the other side of the wall where the router will be

#

Straight run up inside the wall

#

E Z P Z

ocean mirage
#

I ran some ethernet on the weekend, my legs are still sore from being in my roof

#

its jank too

scenic radish
#

Unfortunately there would be no way for me to run Ethernet to each room like I would like to because of the concrete ceilings and floors

#

Plus this isn't my "forever home" anyway

ocean mirage
#

ah oof

#

on one end I just have the networking stuff in the top of a closet and run the ethernet straight out of a hole in the ceiling and terminate to RJ45, no patch panel

#

hence is being sort of jank

#

and on the other end I just had a coax antennae cable there anyway so it was easy enough to run except my roof is cramped af

hushed basalt
#

@ocean mirage cable pulleys can help a lot

#

But roofs suck in general

ocean mirage
#

I can't picture how they would have helped, at least in my case

#

my knees seem bad enough already but being a somewhat big dude in a cramped roof suckeddd

#

at least while up there I noticed many misplaced insulation batts from previous electrical work I assume so I fixed that lol

hushed basalt
#

If you get a pulley up at the top of the roof and maybe a few more at key bends

#

Then you can use hooks and snakes and stuff to pull a drawstring up from the edges where the roof is low

#

Then you're not working in the low parts of the roof as much

#

I'm scared to think of what the insulation situation is like in this rental

ocean mirage
#

Ah right, might not have helped too much in my case but I get it

#

insulation here is pretty good its just tradies fuck with it and dont care

#

ocean mirage

#

Are there neighbours on the other side?

rare condor
#

Yes

ocean mirage
#

So you'd be splitting costs?

rare condor
#

I guess its whether I should wait until it falls

#

well, our neighbour is a bit crazy so I'm not sure. I would avoid court at all costs so 50/50 chance she would pay

scenic radish
#

Whose fence is it?

rare condor
#

The backyard of our house

scenic radish
#

I mean as far as ownership

#

Oh, guessing yours based on the pillars being on your side

ocean mirage
#

Is that how it works where you are? Here its 50/50 ownership afaik

rare condor
#

yeah 50/50

#

but laws are weird and you have to go to court

scenic radish
#

Ah gotcha. Well I don't own a house or fence, but I think it's owned by whoever's property line it's on (United States)

#

I do wonder if it's maybe a per-state thing though

sour escarp
#

same here, wall is common property which sucks ass because my neighbor floods ours with water because she didn't put up water barrier where she put up planters and word is she flooded the neighbor behind us

#

but wont have the money to pay for a replacement when it crumbles

rare condor
#

same issue

#

its rotted due her flooding it

sour escarp
#

ugh

rare condor
#

and also soil comes under our side from plants (we have concrete backyard)

sour escarp
#

does that cause the concrete to crack?

rare condor
#

a battle of wills I guess, see if I can wait until it falls over or having hole long enough is pain

#

yes

#

concrete cracking and moss

scenic radish
#

That's incredibly annoying

sour escarp
#

it's almost like we have the same neighbor

scenic radish
#

Some people have no pride in their property...

sour escarp
#

i've been at war with this woman for years now, i'm even on the HOA board and there is very little they can do

scenic radish
#

I also am on an HOA board. For a condo complex though, not houses

sour escarp
#

funny

#

i got dragged into it by my neighbor.. no one else wants to do it and we've had a vacant seat for 6+ months

scenic radish
#

One of the board members that I developed a relationship with practically begged me to be on the board lol

rare condor
#

funny thing was I started to repair the fence two years ago and she threatened to take me court, in Australia you need a legal agreement before anyone can touch or repair the fence even if its falling over

#

(I was paying for it too)

sour escarp
#

yeah i dunno, there could be some big liability with a fence

rare condor
#

yeah so its a problem for future me I guess

sour escarp
#

likely someone did a makeshift fence and it killed the neighbor or something haha

#

my neighbor installed a shed in the front facing area of the house (not behind wall) without any approval and it comes just < .5" from our property line and there is only 10 feet between our homes. the HOA is fining her $100/week for months now but nothing has changed

#

and not even scratching the surface

hushed basalt
#

Have you considered building your own fence 5mm in on your property out if colorbond :D

sour escarp
#

what is colorbond?

hushed basalt
#

For Haxxa

sour escarp
#

gotcha

hushed basalt
#

It's sheet metal basically

#

With colour impregnated in it

sour escarp
#

interesting

hushed basalt
#

Used for roofs and fences in Australia mostly

sour escarp
#

out here the modern material for roofs is tile

#

for non-commercial at least

hushed basalt
#

There's a lottttt of tile too

#

It's super dumb

ocean mirage
#

what is the non-modern material then?

@fathom sparrow hyperv has converters just like VMware

brisk glen

@clear ferry this is an abode issue not a homekit one lol

#

their service stops sending mdns packets

#

clear ferry

Lol cloud

#

Lol mdns

#

Should I keep going?

brisk glen
#

lol no cloud with homekit

#

lol

#

unless you have a better security system that works localy with HA

shy comet
#

the best security system is the one where you call the cops instead of the company honestly

light trout
#

A picture of @clear ferry on your door

shy comet
#

when teh company calls teh cops there is a delay in how long they show up

#

i once had a false alarm and it took them 2 hours to show up

brisk glen
#

@shy comet except during a home invasion where they break in through the door like a cop raid and take your phones

shy comet
#

in 2 hours all the important shit could be gone

brisk glen
#

the security system is going to be the backup option

#

and no this is no in theory.... I had a home invasion that went down like this

shy comet
#

wow

#

did you add anything for an earlier alert system?

brisk glen
#

never had a security system

shy comet
#

like to wake up before they get into your house

brisk glen
#

I lived in a small apartment and I was cooking dinner...

tidal bronze
#

@clear ferry seems like it. It happens

brisk glen
#

boom goes the door, hello guys in masks with guns

#

my wife could not sleep for weeks

shy comet
#

that nuts

clear ferry
#

@tidal bronze actually not... If I power the wemos from usb and the strip from the wemos it works fine, even with 50 leds

shy comet
#

although if you were awake during that, how would you be able to trigger the alarm?

brisk glen
#

@shy comet thats the point, they were soo fast there is no time

tidal bronze
#

@clear ferry lol. So that strip does not like your psu?

brisk glen
#

the security system I have has a home mode

clear ferry
#

And if I power the nodemcu board from the PSU, then power the led from the 3v port it works fine, except the blue is very dim because of the higher draw

brisk glen
#

aka only the door , glass break sensors are active

shy comet
#

yea i would move out of that place so quick lol

tidal bronze
#

@clear ferry so your internal AMS reg is bad?

brisk glen
#

I did lol

shy comet
#

lol

#

did you feel that was a random invasion or targetted?

#

cuz that situaiton sounds nuts

brisk glen
#

I moved out, added a security system dumped homekit secure video cameras and moved to unifi protect

clear ferry
#

@tidal bronze ams?

brisk glen
#

it was targeted, they wanted 2 things.... drugs and money

#

we had none

clear ferry
#

It appears to be the PSU for some reason, but NOT with the black strip, just all my other ones

shy comet
#

damn talk about scary shit

brisk glen
#

my wife and I keep like $5 between both of us in cash

clear ferry
#

Yeah, that home invasion stuff is crazy I think I can count on a single hand the amount of times that has happened in Scandinavian countries the last 20 years, so I can't relate

brisk glen
#

clearly I need to move to where @clear ferry lives

shy comet
#

haha

clear ferry
#

Seriously, the worst crime we have for the most part is polish criminals stealing tires

tidal bronze
#

@brisk glen where is this ?

brisk glen
#

@tidal bronze texas

shy comet
#

im like wondering if one of those security doors people get would even be useful in a situation like that

brisk glen
#

going to ask the apartment if Im allowed to upgrade their door

#

but its a visual upgrade with metal plates etc

#

$100 gets you a door that takes a few kicks

shy comet
#

yea in an apartment tough to setup a early alert system since you can't do much outside

#

i have tons of lights outside that light up when you walk by the house so my cameras are very visible at that point

brisk glen
#

I shoved a camera inside right up against the glass window

#

clearly visible

#

decent quality

shy comet
#

yea I mean honestly if someone wants to get in your house that way theres really not much you can do to prevent them if they are hell bent

brisk glen
#

night time is rather good with the sensor on this

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet yep

shy comet
#

at that point you focus more on weapons and a plan

brisk glen
#

yah but I added a lot of visual deterrents this time

shy comet
#

like baracading in e house

brisk glen
#

like security stickers

#

cameras that are highly visable

shy comet
#

yea those are helpful for those looking for an opportunity

#

man I bet at this point you guys probably have a plan that you practice like once a month

#

thats something i need to do myself

#

that plan for an oh shit moment like that is important

tidal bronze
#

I do have one.

brisk glen
#

hide under the bed and grab the emergency phone hidden

shy comet
#

my plan is to grab my son and lock myself in the bedroom lol

brisk glen
#

lol

tidal bronze
#

But home invasion is next level so anyone who is doing it is either next level or simply nuts.

brisk glen
#

a lot of that going around

shy comet
#

yea, I always think about it like if someone wants to get in to your house they will find a way to get in at that point its how fast you can notify yourself to prepare for it instead of deterring

tidal bronze
#

Agreed.

shy comet
#

its why my house says "front door open" or "front door closed"

#

still not good enough for home invasino but something lol

brisk glen
#

mine will just scream at you in angry alarm sounds

shy comet
#

lol

brisk glen
#

and scream at the neighbors dogs as well with the outside alarm

tidal bronze
#

Dogs are best in my opinion

shy comet
#

in that situation i would worry about mine though

tidal bronze
#

Lol

brisk glen
#

working on that... my wife is deathly scared of them

#

we need to get a puppy

shy comet
#

yea i was gonna say start with a puppy

tidal bronze
#

Even my neighbors would think twice crossing my driveway

shy comet
#

like 10 weeks old

brisk glen
#

issue is we are both gone most of the time

tidal bronze
#

Well if you are not home something happens its alright

#

All material stuff can be replaced

#

At least thats how I look at it.

shy comet
#

yea its the guys who break in while you are home cooking is the ones you gotta worry about

#

man that makes me think about what i would do in that situation

tidal bronze
#

Get something to protect your family 😀

shy comet
#

yea if ur cooking hope you were using oil and burn them with it lol

brisk glen
#

making soup in a big pot lol

shy comet
#

haha yea boiling soup

tidal bronze
#

With the current situation things will get a little crazy.

shy comet
#

@brisk glen did you catch that break in on video?

brisk glen
#

no... this is why I trashed homekit secure video and all cloud cameras

shy comet
#

oof yea

brisk glen
#

that moment you need is corupted

#

well fuck you too

shy comet
#

yea for reals

undone aspen
#

I was finally able to file unemployment today. LOL

#

@brisk glen So, when you're about, I've curious questions for you.

brisk glen
#

?

undone aspen
#

Aha! He's here. 😉

#

So, Michael, when you had ecobee authorization issues, did your HASS ever fail, or take extremely long, etc... To fully start up and initialize?

clear ferry
#

@tidal bronze same with my bench power supply, so not a problem with the PSU itself

brisk glen
#

nope

#

my hass is running inside a vmware vm @undone aspen

#

the hardware hosing it is rather powerful

hazy vessel
#

Anyone here with Somfy integration working? I'm wondering what's needed for integrating HA wth my Somfy blinds/window awnings? Is the Tahoma box needed?

brisk glen
#

TOP bin intel chips

undone aspen
#

Yeah, mine runs in Docker, but when my HASS was failing to complete startup, but seemingly just stall in the process of it.. the only actual errors in the logs were strictly about ecobee.

#

So, I was curious. Once I REMOVED the integration for ecobee, it's been working since.

#

So I'm wondering if there's a serious bug with the actual ecobee integration itself that could completely stall the whole hass startup itself.

brisk glen
#

might be possible, I know UI reboots a few days ago took forever

#

but they are fast today

undone aspen
#

Yeah, same. ring integration slows my startup a little bit, but otherwise, everything's fast.

#

I waited, easily 30m~180 minutes for hass to start up when it was failing, because I was trying to see if it would just self recover, while I was looking at other angles of it.

brisk glen
#

good god

undone aspen
#

yeah.

#

hassio domain never started, webui never started, etc.

#

Once I removed the ecobee integration from it, finally after a random fluke of it starting.... I was able to get things working flawlessly since.

#

That's what more drives me crazy. The not knowing what the heck took it down so badly.

#

I'm thinking the only way I'm going to get my ecobee "comfort" settings for the time being is to integrate Alexa into ecobee through skill, and since I use the Alexa to integrate most of my automations together by voice, the "Goodnight" scene could integrate setting the comfort zone, and the normal schedule could resume the comfort setting, along with the dismissing of the alarm.

brisk glen
#

ecobee via homekit

#

all issues solved

undone aspen
#

I use that currently, with HASS integrated.

brisk glen
#

it should be fast then

undone aspen
#

For automation, I'm linking the Alexa ecobee plus skill to control comfort settings, or hoping to be able to.

#

"Alexa, tell ecobee good night" for example, will set the Night "comfort" setting.

brisk glen
#

oh man

#

Calendar panel in the upcoming home assistant beta

#

you could forget ecobee profiles and view the times on there?

undone aspen
#

Hmmmm

#

I mean, I could technically skip profiles entirely and use a standard schedule for general temperature (home, chill), and setup holds for everything else, I guess, too.

#

But.

#

Those profiles make use of the remote sensors, where general holds do not.

brisk glen
#

ah

#

well thats what automations are for

#

all ecobee does is find the mean of the sensors

undone aspen
#

If I'm in bed, sleeping, I want the bedroom temperature to be specific, but the bedroom is generally colder than the rest of the house.

brisk glen
#

if you have follow me, then make a more complex automation for only the active sensor

#

or active sensors

clear ferry
#

I actually saw a house with a muuuuurican heating system a while back

#

It was interesting

brisk glen
#

then use the sensors changing state as a trigger

#

re check which to use as the temp calculator

ocean mirage
#

What is special about their heating systems @clear ferry ?

undone aspen
#

Heh, hmmm...

clear ferry
#

One system that has valves for different parts of the house with grates in the floor and stuff

undone aspen
#

I mean, possibly..... But, those ecobee sensors stay high for a long time, unlike regular motion sensors.,

brisk glen
#

@undone aspen but thats how ecobee does it????

ocean mirage
#

Oh are those not popular there atx?

undone aspen
#

So, in preparation for going to bed, I may put away stuff in the kitchen, triggering the kitchen sensor and living room sensor, coming from my office which that sensor would be triggered, then finally go to bed, and the bedroom is triggered then for the long haul too.

brisk glen
#

sure there might be a 30 min delay

clear ferry
#

No, we have traditionally electrical heating per room, and AC in larger areas @ocean mirage

brisk glen
#

@undone aspen thats why I have a sleep mode that only uses he bedroom sensor

undone aspen
#

Follow-Me does use all sensors, certainly, but then when all are "not occupied", could then thus trigger "away" mode.

#

Hence... Profiles. 🙂

#

Which you can't access profiles in HomeKit access methods.

brisk glen
#

so do the same in HA?

ocean mirage
#

Oh you don’t use heat pumps for heating either?

brisk glen
#

just recreate the functions ecobee does

#

I did that for my alarm system

undone aspen
#

But you can't. I mean, that's what the ecobee integration does through the cloud API, but it's unreliable, as noted.

brisk glen
#

cant how so?

#

how can you not recreate the logic in home assistent?

undone aspen
#

I might, possibly however, be able to write a python script to use the echobee API, however, to run local scripts that HASS can run to query and/or set specific profiles independantly.

clear ferry
#

Yes now we do @ocean mirage

undone aspen
#

Not logic alone, no.

clear ferry
#

But that is pretty recent, like last 15 years

brisk glen
#

hass can be triggered on state changes alone

ocean mirage
#

Ah okay

brisk glen
#

or time

undone aspen
#

HASS can.

brisk glen
#

thats how ecobee does it

#

lol

undone aspen
#

But, HASS, itself, cannot tell the ecobee to specifically use the bedroom sensor for temperature, to set the temperature based on only that sensor, without the ecobee API.

brisk glen
#

they do nothing special... just makes it really easy

#

oh that bit

undone aspen
#

Hah

#

yeah, THAT one important bit. 🙂

clear ferry
#

Apparently there is one town in Norway that made the muurican style heating popular in the 80s, so a lot of houses there have it

brisk glen
#

@undone aspen manual AC on till you hit the target of said sensor

#

a bit more complex

#

but it would work

#

you would keep turning the system on and off etc

undone aspen
#

Hmmmmm

#

My... Logitech Harmony Hub, seems to be able to have control over the Ecobee......

#

widens an eye.

brisk glen
#

this is why I use native homekit not via HA and I use dummy switches and scenes

undone aspen
#

Holy crap, I might be able to use the Harmony Elite Hub to integrate ecobee more reliably into HASS, for more specific features......

brisk glen
#

rofl

wet pilot
#

that might also use their api

brisk glen
#

it does lol

undone aspen
#

It does.

brisk glen
#

the only local ecobee api is homekit

undone aspen
#

But. It may "just work" more reliably than HASS currently does.

brisk glen
#

homekit is the evil we need for forcing vendors to support local APIs

undone aspen
#

Hmmm

#

Does not seem to support profiles, through that, though.

#

So, I may try my hand at a python minimal approach to simply CLI set profiles.

brisk glen
#

@undone aspen go native homekit, make a scene to resume schedule and have a ha switch that triggers that scene

undone aspen
#

pyecobee is already included on hassio.

#

Hmm?

brisk glen
#

since you are missing the scenes from your ecobee app

undone aspen
#

No, not scenes. Profiles.

#

Very VERY different in ecobee land. 🙂

#

Ahh, wait.

brisk glen
#

scenes

#

I have a scene that tells ecobee to resume schedule

undone aspen
#

When HomeKit integrates with ecobee directly through the standard Hub... It creates new scenes specific for ecobee.. right.

brisk glen
#

or you can add ecobee to your own scenes

undone aspen
#

but... Hass has no access to those scenes...

brisk glen
#

it can create them

#

@undone aspen hass can have access to them

#

make a switch

#

homekit automation when the switch turns on to run the scene

undone aspen
#

Ahhhh, reverse activation.

brisk glen
#

aye

undone aspen
#

Hmmmm

scenic radish
#

How many times has atx 🤢 because of this conversation?

brisk glen
#

@scenic radish over 9000?

undone aspen
#

Hmmmmmm

scenic radish
#

ER-x and the AP are supposed to come today 🎉

brisk glen
#

nice

undone aspen
#

Well, hmmmmmm... LOL. That's something to think about.

scenic radish
#

I can even ceiling mount the AP in a closet on the other side of the wall where the router will be

undone aspen
#

Hmmm, but.. Then I don't get thermostat control within HASS itself anymore.

brisk glen
#

a little loss

undone aspen
#

Unless.....

#

The Harmony Elite Hub.......

#

lol

brisk glen
#

@scenic radish you keep your wifi AP in a closet?

#

a badidea

#

lets just hamper the signal from the get go with walls

scenic radish
#

nah, it's currently on an entertainment center about 2 feet above the floor. moving it to the closet would make it one wall closer to the living space

brisk glen
#

but the rest of the place

scenic radish
#

it's in the corner of the condo

undone aspen
#

hmmm. For some reason the Logitech Harmony Hub integration only seems to give me one entity.. The remote.living_room_harmony

scenic radish
#

just gonna give it a shot and compare signal in its current position and on the ceiling

brisk glen
#

this is why I have 2 APs in this apartment thats only 751 square feet

scenic radish
#

right now signal is fine on the entertainment center but it would be nice for the AP to be hidden

@clear ferry and you get a good signal on 5ghz?

undone aspen

I have 2 AP's to cover my house. 🙂

#

Both ceiling mounted on either end of the house.

clear ferry
#

I only care about 5gz on two of the floors, and yes

brisk glen

the stronger the signal, the less the devices have to work and save more battery plus they get faster speeds

#

I like having half a Gbit on wifi for my phone

clear ferry

I have that fine

brisk glen

I need higher ceilings lol

#

we get it @clear ferry your home is not made out of brick and is sane

undone aspen

Oh great, my ecolink motion sensors are shipped via USPS again. Let's see that they actually deliver to ME this time, and not someone else.

clear ferry

No, we have wooden houses

brisk glen
#

wood is fantastic for wifi

scenic radish
#

what, you have brick interior walls michael?

#

Pretty traditional in the UK

undone aspen

scenic radish
#

yeah, all drywall interior here

clear ferry

I can get half a gigabit on my phone, but frankly doesn't matter, because all bandwidth intensive stuff is automated in my garage anyway

undone aspen

Mmmmmm, drywall.

Quite a few optimizations to make Home Assistant go faster. One of the major changes is that Home Assistant will now set up all configured integration instances in parallel during startup. Some startup speed reported improvements from 82 seconds before this change and 28 seconds after this change. That is a huge improvement!

#

oh my@undone aspen

#

the new HA is going to make you supper happy

undone aspen
#

Oh?

scenic radish
#

meanwhile my startup time has gone from 20 seconds to 20 seconds between 0.109.6 to 0.110.0b0+

clear ferry

@scenic radish sir that is nice

undone aspen
#

Hmmmm

brisk glen
#

@scenic radish uses only 1 intergration?

undone aspen
#

I see... yeah that. Sounds very good!

#

Parallel integration startup would solve a lot of issues (while possibly creating more issues elsewhere)

brazen fable
#

I have 15 integrations so far and my startup time is about 10 seconds

scenic radish
#

nah i'm jk. what was strange though is that i saw a speed improvement of 30 seconds to 20 seconds when moving to the beta... and it stayed like that after downgrading back to 0.109.6... GWchadMEGATHINK

You could always get a heated hose

@scenic radish , you just turned on a light 💡. I have my old rpi3 that ran HAss when I went to a NUC sitting there doing nothing. Guess it is time to look at running 2 instances so I can minimize zwave restarts.

Yeah that... would indeed be cool.

#

My CPAP does have Bluetooth....

undone aspen

Yeah, Scolias, I could but those are added cost and not covered by insurance.

brazen fable

Dream stations have heated hoses

undone aspen

it’s been helping a lot

undone aspen

scenic radish
#

@green inlet DOIT

brazen fable

I think $24 is a solid investment so that you don't drown in your sleep shrug

undone aspen
#

Now I have an army of CPAP hoses that I can reuse

brazen fable
#

But that's just my opinion 😔

clear ferry
#

I just replace my hose once a year

#

Or, get a new one sent

undone aspen
#

Yeah. With my SoClean i rarely change hoses and have surplus supplies,

clear ferry
#

I just clean it once a month with hot water

undone aspen
#

Like I said though I recently got a fleece hose cover. That’s been a nice sound $10 investment so far! Two nights and no drowning!

clear ferry
#

I need a new mask though, saw they had one with memory foam now, so going to get them to send me that one

undone aspen

Once the dew point reaches 60F I'm uncomfortable and I h8 it

last dirge
#

my house is 76

brisk glen
#

and this is just the morning

#

@last dirge now that is hot

last dirge
#

but relative humidity is set to 45%

brisk glen
#

my humidity is around 60%

scenic radish
#

Dew point of 53 @last dirge

#

That's comfortable

last dirge
#

no kiddin 🙂

brisk glen
#

err 56% today

scenic radish
#

A little warmer than I'd prefer but reasonably dry

last dirge
#

REAL FEEL

scenic radish
#

I like the air as dry as possible, like dew point of 35 F

last dirge
#

I can't deal with air that dry

brisk glen
#

I let eco+ take care of the real feel

scenic radish
#

I love it

last dirge
#

my skin goes nuts, and I start having sinus problems

scenic radish
#

It's so nice and rarely happens

last dirge
#

our relative humidity here is regularly ridiculously high

brisk glen
#

same here

#

I let the AC overcool to reduce the humidity

last dirge
#

currently 81%

scenic radish
#

In the summer the dew point is usually high

undone aspen
#

heh. Bleh., Ever since I switched to Celsius, I've started hating Fahrenheiht.

scenic radish
#

Fall and spring not so much

undone aspen
#

And can't even spell the F one. So F that nonsense. 🙂

scenic radish
#

It's because the metric system is way better and I wish we used it

brisk glen
#

lol

last dirge
#

it's always humid here

#

even in winter

#

which makes it feel significantly colder

undone aspen
#

heh. I live in Florida, it's always humid here too. 🙂

scenic radish
#

At least a low temp limits the absolute humidity

#

Oh wait.

brisk glen
#

Florida is humid hell

scenic radish
#

I forgot winter doesn't mean cold for everyone lol

undone aspen
#

My HOUSE has 46% humidity inside.

last dirge
#

we had a week or so in the teens last year

scenic radish
#

I just assume other states with temperate climates just have summer year round

last dirge
#

with 70+% humidity

undone aspen
#

Winter? Florida? No. We have Hell, Hell, Hell, and Spring.

scenic radish
#

Where I'm at we have winter and construction

undone aspen
#

heh.. When I move up north to Canada, then I will actually see genuine Winter.

scenic radish
#

Just wanna give a shout-out to the IRS for funding my new server and networking equipment

clear ferry
#

My tax money is gone already, but my vacation money is coming in soon

undone aspen
#

I'm just going to defect to Canada before tax time is up. LOL

#

Hmmmm..... I hate the idea.. But. possibly... ifttt and ecobee...

brazen fable
#

Why would you want to move to a tundra

#

The cold is so much worse than heat

undone aspen
#

I disagree.

#

Cold is much better than the heat.

brazen fable
#

I live in Chicago. Let me tell ya, you're wrong

#

We get both extreme heat and cold. Screw the cold

#

LOL

undone aspen
#

I've lived in Maryland before. I know the difference. 🙂

#

With heat, you can only strip down so much and still be miserable. With cold, you can layer, and control inside climate pretty well, done right, better than you can anything else.

#

Unlike in Japan where they don't have central heating, and have kotetsu. THAT.... Was indeed, miserable in the cold.

scenic radish
#

@brazen fable hello neighbor

undone aspen
#

Darting between rooms, and freezing on the toilet. LOL

brazen fable
#

o.O

last dirge
#

no magic toilet seat?

undone aspen
#

They had warming washlets.

brazen fable
#

I was just thinking maybe turn up the heat to a normal temp

#

lol

undone aspen
#

But, of course, that's just your ass. And that takes a few to get warm enough to matter. 🙂

#

lol

brazen fable
#

Besides, it doesn't even get cold in florida

undone aspen
#

What's cold?

#

🙂

brazen fable
#

cold is below 0

#

0f

scenic radish
#

"cold" is the absence of heat

undone aspen
#

2019, my area got to -1 or -2'C 😉

brazen fable
#

not cold

#

I don't even put on a jacket until it's below 0

scenic radish
#

no u

brazen fable
#

unless i'm going to be outside for an extended period of time anyway

#

but there's no real reason to go outside in the cold for extended periods of time

burnt grotto
#

brazen fable
#

I prefer nacho cheese but cool rancheros aren't bad

undone aspen
#

Hmmm.. Perhaps try a RancherOS medium?

burnt grotto
#

undone aspen
#

@burnt grotto This isn't RancherOS support.

burnt grotto
#

i need to add the HDD so i can mount the drive

#

I know i asked in Other and someone said to ask here

undone aspen
#

clever mortar
#

That'd be me...

undone aspen
#

This still isn't RancherOS support.

brazen fable
#

Darn you tinkerer

burnt grotto
#

sorry

#

I'll leave my bad

#

later

clever mortar
#

Well, some rando may know about RancherOS

#

But ... Google would be a good starter

brazen fable
#

Yeah google would be your best bet

undone aspen
#

Yeah, or the RancherOS community. 🙂

clever mortar
#

Damn... hit #1 links to the RancherOS docs on the subject...

burnt grotto
#

i have google it but i don't understand it i only bee doing this pass 2 months with Linux

brazen fable
#

If you're new to linux why do you want to install it on rancherOS

undone aspen
#

Perhaps you're running before you can crawl?

clever mortar
burnt grotto
#

its not that i been on the rancheos web and show me how

#

I'm asking how to lay it out in the cloud configs

#

but all good my bad everyone

clever mortar
#

Ask on their forum?

undone aspen
burnt grotto
#

@Peace

clever mortar
#

Going to the actual community in question always will be a better choice...

undone aspen
#

Hmm. I guess.. it's time... To go to UPS to drop off my returns.

scenic radish
#

I just realized something. We're just a reverse proxy to direct people to the right channel

undone aspen
#

LOL

clever mortar

brazen fable

I'll just give tinkerer his lashing and it's all settled

undone aspen
#

Michael, not just Rancher, RancherOS!

brisk glen
#

So abode updated my system with new HomeKit fw.....

clever mortar
#

While folks here know a lot, if you're after specific knowledge for a thing that has a community ... always better to ask in that community @burnt grotto 😉

brisk glen
#

Let’s see if it breaks again

#

Rancher os is not supported anyways

burnt grotto
#

Linux is not hard @brisk glen
i have rancher setup I'm just missing the mount drive man

brisk glen
#

They moved on to kube deployments

hearty depot
brisk glen
#

Clearly Linux is hard when you are just missing a drive that you need to simply mount

brazen fable
#

have you tried the standard linux mount command

burnt grotto
#

yea i have

brazen fable
burnt grotto
#

then i guess clealy I'm far to dumb
