Still encouraged to work from home, right?

clear ferry
#

Yes, both by state and employer

scenic radish
#

i'm hoping my work encourages us to work from home after the end of this month

#

we sit too close together for me to be comfortable even with a face mask, and some of the common areas are very small

clever mortar
#

Our employer has already said that despite the UK (well, English) gov opening things up, they're encouraging us to WFH

#

Even when they do open up the offices they've been quite clear the they only expect people to go in who can't WFH effectively

clear ferry
#

I'll probably be WFH for atleast this fall

clever mortar
#

I expect to spend some time in the office after they open things up, even if only so I can visit my barber ๐Ÿ˜„

green inlet
#

At this stage, haircuts are over-rated ๐Ÿ˜‚

clever mortar
#

I've got a "quarantine haircut" but ... it feels wrong

#

I mean, it's not such that I'd be worried about being in front of a client even in normal times, but ... it's just not right dammit

clear ferry
#

I have the opposite

green inlet
#

I have shaved my head for about 15 years. Last October I decided I wanted to grow it out....well then corona and my dome is just obnoxious

clear ferry
#

I'm letting my hair grow

#

I have more hair than the last 3 years now

scenic radish
#

same

#

it's... interesting to say the least

clever mortar
#

My colleagues are a mixed bag - some are going full hippy, others have gone buzzcut

#

There's a lot more facial hair though ๐Ÿ˜„

wild grove
#

+1 hippy

clever mortar
#

One team member has long enough hair now that they're going for a topknot ๐Ÿ˜„

green inlet
#

Anyone man-bun length yet?

#

Or topknot I guess it is called in UK

wild grove
#

im in the beatles stage

green inlet
#

Funny, back of my hair is growing, bangs not so much. Pretty much have a full on mullet

last dirge
#

I look more or less like my avatar

green inlet
#

Lmao

#

Me too

last dirge
#

it's a bit longer, haven't had a haircut in 2 weeks or so

#

haircut = clippers with no guard

green inlet
#

You roll your own

clear ferry
#

I haven't shaved in 3 months

clever mortar
#

If I tried that, the wife would have an "accident" with the clippers ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

Well, I'm not allowed to have a mustache

rare condor

Asked water company to install digital water meter, works with Home Assistant not so great though as new meter is audible creates tapping in pipes and near entry point which is next to my bed. Now asking water company to remove and install old meter ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Very productive

clear ferry
#

Strange Australian people

#

We take the water in through basements, it never be close to a bedroom tbh

rare condor
#

We build houses on concrete slabs

#

no basement

clear ferry
#

Same here, with basements

rare condor
#

Anyhow worried if I will win this battle, as I just asked them to install it, which required rework

clear ferry
#

All water and plumbing goes through the concrete slab

rare condor
#

we run it through ceiling so it can be upgraded with ease

clear ferry
#

We just have big enough pipes to begin with, even my parents house from the 50s have no issues with water in our plumbing out, and that house has had two extra bathrooms added

rare condor
#

sure but what happens if you want to add water to an existing room?

#

For example I ran water to my Ice Maker in my Fridge

clear ferry
#

We run pipes inside the walls

rare condor
#

So no advantage really

clear ferry
#

Pipes inside pipes to be fair

rare condor
#

๐Ÿฆ˜๐Ÿฆ˜๐Ÿฆ˜

wet pilot
#

lol so the AT&T saga continues. Bury line crew just came through but they're not allowed to connect it

scenic radish
#

of course not

wet pilot
#

haven't had a connection from them since the 30th

clever mortar
#

Which year ๐Ÿ˜›

wet pilot
#

lol definitely feels that way

brisk glen
#

Lol

wet pilot
#

i'm "struggling" with 400/25 right now through Spectrum

clear ferry
#

Lool

#

What kind of speeds are those

#

Uploads for ants

clever mortar
#

That upload is about 6 times the download I had in the last house

clear ferry
#

I think we got 70/30 in 2009, but I got 500/500 in 2014

clever mortar
#

It's also about half my current download speed, which is unusually high. Normally it floats about 40 Mb/s, currently it's 50 Mb/s (and change)

wet pilot
#

this was the fastest i could get from my local DOCIS provider without having to pay an install fee

#

they have "gig" but i would have to pay $200 for them to upgrade some stuff

#

AT&T is "gig"

clear ferry
#

Had 10/10 from 2003-2005, but upgraded to 50/50 from 2005-2007, then I lived in Ireland with appalling 3/1Mbit wireless for a year, and got back to 100/100 in Oslo for a year

clever mortar
#

I've currently got the fastest I can get, which is about 1/3 of what I had 10 years ago in a different house...

#

UK's broadband is getting better, but it's still only good if you live in a big city

tidal bronze
#

@wet pilot you can nag a little to get the $200 waived

wet pilot
#

i also didn't want to wait for an installer to be scheduled

#

though joke was on me, their line was cut between the house and their pole too

tidal bronze
#

lol. I let them charge and then got it waived.

wet pilot
#

i was debating abusing their 30-day money back guarantee but i don't think i'm under contract. I will likely pay them for a month or two for their troubles and for actually getting me back up in a reasonable amount of time

upper apex
#

i have unifi products, and I have home assistant. Anyone have any type of "watchdog" suggestions for me?

#

would like to know if cameras go down, or if my internet goes down. or HA isnt responding.. Anyone have anything like that they are using already?

rare condor
#

or if my internet goes down (ping?)

tidal bronze
#

Unifi not supposed to go down. You can monitor unifi devices via unifi account. But yet to see that happen. @upper apex

upper apex
#

its also hard.. because if the internet goes down.. how does a notification get "out" to me..

tidal bronze
#

That's why you monitor via unifi cloud.

upper apex
#

yeah but i need alert..

#

not something i have to monitor

brisk glen
#

unifi send me an email when my network goes down

upper apex
#

i know if can monitor all my devices. i already do.

tidal bronze
#

It emails.

upper apex
#

think it emails for devices.. but what about clients

tidal bronze
#

If you have to monitor your unifi stuff this closely, then something is certainly wrong in your setup ๐Ÿ™‚

scenic radish
#

wait. FE? if that means Fast Ethernet, forget it...

brisk glen
#

good boy

rare condor
#

Ops well that wiring is wrong, now my Alarm goes off anytime my window is closed.

scenic radish
#

way out of my price range, but thanks

shy comet
#

@scenic radish go with ubiquiti if you can

shy comet
#

i had a lot of frustration with my netgear nighthawk and it all went away when I jumped on the Unifi train

rare condor
#

I moved from Ubiquiti to Asus AC68U

upper apex
#

@tidal bronze nothing is wrong lol. And nothing has ever gone down on me.. but its adding to my security system if i can have an alert if someone unplugs my camera

#

or the internet goes down in the house

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet have you tried ledfx on Ubuntu? Been a task getting a VM with USB analog audio capture device running.

rare condor
#

@upper apex Alert to what?

#

Like how are u being alerted?

upper apex
#

my phone

#

and or meail

#

email

#

llol

rare condor
#

But Internet is down?

#

Email uses Internet as a transmission mechanism

upper apex
#

correct

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze on ubuntu? no i had to use anaconda on my windows machine to get it to work

upper apex
#

would have to be cloud based

rare condor
#

I know

upper apex
#

or run at a friends house

tidal bronze
#

@upper apex I am trying to understand your use case for this alert. If someone unplugs it who is plugging it back?

rare condor
#

Robbery?

upper apex
#

lol

rare condor
#

Use case is werid

upper apex
#

no one

clear ferry
#

Just notify via cellular @upper apex

rare condor
#

^

upper apex
#

but i get a notification that someone did

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet works on Ubuntu but can't get ALSA to recognize USB capture device

upper apex
#

cant get a motion detection if they unplug the camrea

tidal bronze
#

Ok who plugs it back in?

upper apex
#

why would i care at that point

clear ferry
upper apex
#

i can call someone to swing by the hosue

#

or 911

tidal bronze
#

Exactly ๐Ÿ™‚

upper apex
#

lol

rare condor
#

I have my house set off with Piezo Screamers alarms 120db, I pointed it at neighbours house so in event of water leak or robbery and I'm not home it will wake them up, I have 3 on each side of house to wake up neighbours

upper apex
#

but im notified that somone is tampering with the camera

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze maybe its the USB device?

#

@upper apex sounds like you need cameras watching cameras lol

tidal bronze
#

You have other problems to solve before getting notifications at the house. @upper apex

rare condor
#

@upper apex 3 Camera Rule

scenic radish
#

actually i think i might go with the Archer A7

rare condor
#

1 Camera facing another camera, 3rd camera facing other 2

upper apex
#

@tidal bronze like?

shy comet
#

@scenic radish buy it form costco if you can and if it dies in a year you can return it and take that money to Unifi lol

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet I so want this to run in a VM ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

shy comet
#

thats waht happened to my nighthawk lol

last dirge
rare condor

archer A7 is tp-link

wet pilot

@scenic radish does your new "server" have 2x nics?

scenic radish

nah

#

oh. server in quotes. cute. i get it.

clear ferry

I have never had a camera unplugged, I don't see how that even is an issue

scenic radish

you're making fun of me

upper apex

omg

#

haha

wet pilot
#

haha well, if it doesn't have dual nics is it really a server?

upper apex
#

camrea is just one example too

rare condor
#

Honestly though given IP Cameras are $20 just buy more

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot no

tidal bronze

@clear ferry yep no idea how that happens.

upper apex

what about HA not responding

clear ferry

Gotta have 8 atleast

@upper apex bug report

clear ferry

Your servers stop? And don't come up again? That has happened probably twice here in 20 years, with close to 100 different instances of servers wtf

rare condor
#

Get dedicated box for pfsense

scenic radish
#

@upper apex always. i fear asking for purchase advice here lol

rare condor
#

never run pfsense on hypervisor

shy comet
#

so who else here is watching Solar Opposites?

clear ferry

I don't see what your end goal really is @upper apex

tidal bronze

Exactly

clear ferry

Random issues that shouldn't occur

rare condor

clear ferry

If you just do it right

scenic radish

thinking of getting this $70 consumer router
YOU NEED THIS $300 ROUTER

tidal bronze

Yep that

shy comet

@upper apex uptime robot for things connected to the internet like your HA server

rare condor
#

NO NO NO you need CISCO Exchange Router with 1Tb Full Backplane support

scenic radish
#

lmao

tidal bronze

I can't wrap my head around that someone goes randomly unplugging cameras at one's house

rare condor
#

Kids?

yeah, was thinking kids

scenic radish

๐Ÿ

shy comet

@tidal bronze sounds like a bad ethernet cable if its PoE ๐Ÿ˜›

rare condor
#

Possums?

wet pilot
#

squirrels

tidal bronze
#

LMAO

shy comet
#

ah yea those pesky squirrels man

rare condor
#

I have never seen a squirrel

pure vine
#

does anyone know about a good ATA sip/voip adapter, im intrested in the grandstream one on amazon, but there is a bad review about the ui and compatiblity?

clear ferry
#

Or unplugging peoples servers haha

rare condor
#

I always wanted to travel to the US

#

to see one

wet pilot
#

not missing much

#

they're really dumb

rare condor
#

They are so fast

shy comet
#

It took ATT a full week to install Fiber here because the squirrels chewed through the fiber in multiple locations

upper apex
#

@clear ferry redundancy.. i have a pretty descent security system. which includes cameras that are DVRd into a 1000LB Liberty Gun safe that's bolted to the concrete... However if someone takes the power out or internet out.. I wont get a notification that someone is there.. Thus a watchdog type service.. that's why they exist lol. I was just asking if anyone was using one and what they suggest.

shy comet
#

everytime they fixed one spot they found another spot lol

pure vine
#

There is squirrels in the UK

clear ferry
#

@pure vine I was looking for the same 10 years ago, but then VoIP died

pure vine
#

@clear ferry voip died?

rare condor
#

@upper apex Cellular

scenic radish
#

the archer a7 has generally good reviews, decision made

upper apex

im simply looking to plug holes in security

#

and Haxxa yeah ive considered that

clear ferry

Nobody uses phones anymore tbh, all cellular @pure vine

rare condor
#

Or IFTTT pinging home

shy comet
#

@upper apex I would look into Uptime Robot for your online services

pure vine
#

Its kind of comming back now because BT is killing their copper products @clear ferry

rare condor

Like VPS pings your IP every 2 minutes

upper apex
#

hey look at that, some serious help

#

thanks @shy comet

clear ferry
#

Never coming back here, copper died in 2003

wet pilot

US carriers are actively killing POTS too

rare condor

So I am really annoyed at my new water meter

#

Bedroom wall is shaking

tidal bronze
#

Oh boy

upper apex

pure vine
#

Personally, i prefer sip as i can get it on my mobile, and have a seprate landline number to my family

rare condor

POTS? psh you guys need to get on the Obihai train lol

rare condor
#

badly designed house with water meter 10cm from bed

tidal bronze
#

Yep obihai and gv

clear ferry
#

I think we stopped taking orders for landlines in 2005 and killed the last ones in 2012

rare condor
#

I still have landline (fake landline) only way I could convince family to get naked dsl

upper apex
#

i LOVE seeing some of these new town homes being wired with ethernet throughout the house

wet pilot
#

our house does not have a phone number ๐Ÿ™‚

pure vine
#

there seems to be a prefence towards landlines for some reason, and also dispite UK mobile service providers making the standard for reporting phone locations, none of the emergency service providers use it

wet pilot
#

no reason for it, we both have cell phones and baby is a baby

rare condor
#

I guess landlines are damn reliable

pure vine
#

I personally like having a local number

#

but it doesnt have to be on physical copper now

tidal bronze
#

Local number ?

upper apex

google voice and port your old landline number lol

rare condor
#

Area based

wet pilot

i have Google Fi, they won't let me have both ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

@wet pilot area codes

modest smelt

shy comet

@wet pilot i had to use a separate account for the house lol

upper apex

landlines dont go out

wet pilot

haha

upper apex

they have their own power

modest smelt
#

Maybe over there they dont

wet pilot

landlines with POTS wouldn't. VOIP would

pure vine
#

Yeah, there is supposed to be power on the line in the states

upper apex

just have to hook an old phone

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze they get it from time to time actually

tidal bronze

@shy comet was searching for a DID the other day no luck.

upper apex
#

#

but hey they just got interenet 3 years ago

modest smelt
#

Yeah but we all know murica is terrible with old tech

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze yea you have to wait for someone to lose a number so you can snag it lol

upper apex
#

and last month upgraded to 20mb via two 10mb connections..

#

how ever the hell that works

modest smelt
#

meanwhile Romania's been touting gigabit fiber for years

tidal bronze

@shy comet yep that's what it seems.

#

I have like 15 on flow route just want to collect a few.

upper apex

as a kid we only had dial up

my mini one ices up soo it does not

Ours only defrost when needed, which is from my graphs, hardly at all

and @clear ferry guess it depends on what you have

most issues are apple related

There's a USB cellular modem that's $43 on Amazon... I have an extra active SIM card I'm not using and am considering using it for critical notifications

shy comet
#

i need to add one of those myself

#

you got your server on a UPS too?

scenic radish

Yeah

forest edge
#

seems alittle excessive for "critical notifications" lol

#

you could just make an app on your phone that lets you know when your HA instance is unreachable and notify you

scenic radish
#

Found one for $16

#

It's for if something like a water leak happened when I'm away and the power is out

forest edge
#

lol

scenic radish
#

Or if you're about to send a message in lounge and my power is out

forest edge
#

just how long does your apc keep your mini pc powered during an outage?

scenic radish
#

Or to send floods to texts to scammers

#

Not sure. Last I checked based on the wattage of the equipment attached and the Wh rating of the UPS, something like 2-3 hours

forest edge
#

does this only power that or does it keep your modem online on as well?

scenic radish
#

Actually the real use would be for critical notifications if mobile data isn't working for some reason

#

My modem, router, server, and switch are connected to it

forest edge
#

ok so if your ha server has power and still has connection to the internet..

and if that was the case you be better off getting one of those handoff modems i linked a few weeks ago

shy comet
#

@scenic radish i apparenlty bought that on amazon back in 2017 lol

#

no idea where it is ๐Ÿ˜‚

pure vine
#

@forest edge Ive had issues with my mobile service provider where just their data goes down because of issues like DNS or just routing issue, SMS works fine as it works on seprate infrastructure

forest edge
#

sms is sent through the same means as actual calls rather that be cdma, gsm etc. (sms can also be sent via mobile data(3g,4g etc) as well, also some mms can be sent through cdma/gsm)

#

but what Tediore doesn't know and will find out later. those usb dongles and even the routers work off the mobile data aspect alone. they don't work off cdma, gsm lol

scenic radish
#

Ah. Well then the use case shifts to when the internet is out

forest edge
#

and thats why i said earlier that netgear thing i linke din here a few weeks ago would be a much better choice over the dongle

sorry for the super noobie question, just trying to wrap my mind around it.

scenic radish
#

Some devices have multiple logical entities, such as a battery level sensor, light sensor, etc.

#

Devices are a way to group those related entities together

worldly widget
#

oooh ok perfect thanks

#

that makes so much more sense than everything I was reading

scenic radish
#

Not all integrations support Devices though.

#

They have to be updated

@brave panther Poe has had propitary pinouts too, Cisco did their stuff while IEEE did their stuff

rupester, look up Cloudflare's - they have 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2 and 1.1.1.3 for various purposes

Outside of that, the good old quad eight and quad nine are solid.

scenic radish

1.1.1.1 for lyfe

forest edge
#

1.1.1.3? when did they add that

brave panther
#

1.1.1.1 - normal
1.1.1.2 - no malware
1.1.1.3 - no adult content

proven pasture
#

i fancy running pihole / adguard home in a container but to be honest dns is soooo critical just need it to work (tm)...

forest edge

wow

nice addition, tediore gf needs to be told of that

LOL

@proven pasture I run a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter + UniFi UAC + PiHole

definitely not as "simple" as they say, but then neither is anything that goes on a Pi

so many ubiquiti users lol

@proven pasture pfblockerNG or some of the other alternative that opnsense offers

I run 130 or so Ubiquiti devices

1.1.1.2 sounds about right

brave panther

Yes! I use pfSense ($400 10Gb/s monster) and pfBlockerNG for lyfe.

worldly widget
#

Oh, I should have said, for DNS we use DNSFilter

proven pasture

Change your router DNS to: 1.1.1.2 + 1.0.0.2

brave panther

My pfSense has like 6 external DNS servers configured .. just in case โ„ข

proven pasture

@worldly widget Virgin Media hub (modem mode) -> edgerouter x -> unifi APs for me...

brave panther
#

As the mantra goes, "It's always DNS"

proven pasture
#

haha

#

dnsfilter - i will look

brave panther
#

yeah just checked again, 6. pihole and pihole2 (main and backup), 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google), and 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112 (Quad9)
Of course, everything on the network itself points directly to the gateway (which if it's down, "the internet's down" anyways)

proven pasture
#

dns filter , not seen that before - $ a month ?

worldly widget
#

oh yeah, I think it's like $5 / site / month...not really super necessary for homes, but some very nice features

#

it's like Umbrella but way cheaper

scenic radish
#

Big fan of cloudflare. Their free tier is very nice

brave panther
#

Honestly their whole "free" platform is nice. I don't pay a dollar, and they host my domain's DNS records for free.

scenic radish
#

I use it as the DNS resolver for my domain name

brave panther
#

Yup.

scenic radish
#

You can even set up third-party auth (like your Google account) for accessing your remote services

proven pasture
#

i heard this thing that primary and secondary DNS is not 1 then 2 but load balances... is that right

scenic radish
#

I use their free 15-year cert for SSL

#

So in 14.3 years I'm gonna be confused why remote access has stopped working

clear ferry
#

@proven pasture depends on the implementation

proven pasture
#

i mean if i had pihole and i want ensure all traffic goes via it i'd need to set dhcp allocated DNS to say 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.10 (if that was the pihole ip) - or just one address and no secondary

clear ferry
#

Usually it's a set priority

brave panther
#

And they support ALL the things - the common ones like A/CNAME/PTR/MX, but also more obscure ones that most people don't need, like DKIM/CAA

#

I would move my domain over (.io) but it's way more expensive sadly

proven pasture
#

which seems daft as the resiliance should be on the secondary dns server if the pihole fails...

scenic radish
#

I don't even need a dyndns service because I have a cronjob set up to update my AAAA record with my server's ipv6 address every 5 min

proven pasture
#

have i got this all a bit confused ?

scenic radish
#

Using their API

brave panther
#

Paying $15/yr at Namecheap, Cloudflare wants like $45 last I checked

I also bought my domain on namecheap

scenic radish

Glad they support whois privacy or whatever it's called

#

I don't want my name and address tied to it publicly

brave panther
#

Actually my current plan is now $35/yr at Namecheap for .io so maybe(?) I'll consider Cloudflare next year. I guess the introductory price I was at a few years ago when I registered changed recently. Like after 3 years or so.

#

yeah I hear you on that. That's part of why I went with them. Their whois guard is free (read: included)

scenic radish
#

Yup

#

.io, fancy

brave panther
#

idk, maybe it's not a had thing to keep all my eggs in different baskets.

#

hah well the .com was taken, and I just got done spending $65 with GoDaddy to hit a brick wall with a domain owner that never even replied to a single email of theirs stating my $2500 offer... So I might get a new domain one of these days.

#

I don't have a lot tied to it, just my entire home lab and VPN connections NBD <_<

Haha well here in Kentucky, Andy Beshear is pretty annoyed because Indiana, who had roughly 4x as many cases and took a week later to close, opened their stuff up weeks faster than we are. So people are literally just driving over the bridge, 30 mins, and getting their hair cuts and whatnot.
