clear ferry
orchid rose
#

I wonder if that can also see temperature to some extent? I saw some years back a video where you could see the pin code someone had just input

clear ferry
#

Never had that one

#

Had a few of this though

orchid rose
#

I removed IR filters from some cameras as well to do some IR headtracking, but never thought about trying it

#

I did however learn then that the floppy disk film is transparent to IR but blocks all visible light. That was kinda interesting

low harness
#

The plastic is made to let IR from the remote through. That's at about 900 nm wavelength. That's very close to visible light, hence the need for a filter on cameras.
Meanwhile, the black body radiation from an object at 25 degrees C lies in the range 10 um. Far outside the range of any cheap camera.

orchid rose
#

But I think what the phone filter there does is, it uses the depth sensor which works in IR. Would it be possible for it to have a wide enough window to catch temperature radiation too?

low harness
#

I doubt it. We're talking four orders of magnitude difference in wave length. There are obviously sensors that can pick that up, but they are in a completely different price range and not something you throw into a phone just because you can. As a main feature - sure, see the various FLIR phones for example - but not to do something something else does better anyway.

orchid rose
#

Alright

low harness
#

IIRC fully exposed camera film makes a great IR filter, btw. Speaking of things noone remembers.

Yeah I think that was one of the options for these mods that turned webcams to IR cams. The other was the floppy disk film.

modest smelt
#

@cloud dock could you give an example of a fast arm machine competing on the same pricepoint as x86?

cloud dock
#

@modest smelt rockpro64, rk3399 chip with a 4x pcie slot and 4gig ram for ~$70.
It is my home router, with a 10 gig dual port card, two usb3 SSDs, and a 14TB storage array.

modest smelt
#

And you feel support is inadequate for the rockpro64?

cloud dock
#

No, support is terrific, aarch64 support is inadequate in HA.

modest smelt
#

That's what I said?

brisk glen
#

aarch64 support is inadequate in arm in general in all distros.....

#

in the packages themselves

#

some one needs to go in and fix the issues

cloud dock
#

πŸ˜† Not quite

brisk glen
#

random shit like openssl was slower

cloud dock
#

OpenSSL, like many other packages, was optimized for years for a single architecture.
You give someone a ten year head start on you, yeah they are going to be a little bit ahead.

brisk glen
#

as in the 32 bit version ran way faster

modest smelt
#

What gen PCIe is on that thing

brisk glen
#

issue like that that are not HA's fault

clear ferry
#

Frankly, nobody cares about arm support, power is inexpensive and we want to run more services on each host, except in rare special cases

brisk glen
#

package authors it relies on simply need to fix their stuff

#

64bit arm has had issues for years

junior forge
#

yep

#

The Raspberry Pi foundation is a great example of that, shipping arm64 boards, but not the support for it

modest smelt
#

Can't for the life of me find which gen PCIe this rockpro64 is

cloud dock
#

HA not building a virtualized arm image is not a package authors fault.

brisk glen
#

there is a dockerized ha image?

cloud dock
#

@modest smelt It's technically gen 2, but it runs by default at gen 1 because not every board/chip can maintain gen 2.

forest edge
#

well to be fair they do class them as dev boards

junior forge
#

Why would we ship virtualized arm images?

modest smelt
#

So you have a "Dual 10 Gbit" card on an interface that runs at max 16 Gbps?

#

Sorry, 8 Gbps

brisk glen
#

why would you run a vm on an arm device yet?

cloud dock
#

One interface is the WAN interface, which I don't need ten gig for.
And I have my board running at gen 2 without issue.

brisk glen
#

that overhead just kills the power performance

cloud dock
#

Docker is a miserable virtualization agent.
And linux containers don't have much overhead.

junior forge
#

So

#

@cloud dock

#

build your own container

#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

brisk glen
#

take the current ha container and add on your own packages?

cloud dock

That's what I've been doing for over a year now. @junior forge

I could run it within HA, but I don't want to

forest edge
#

my dream is still rpi4 usb boot but you know..

#

junior forge

HA will take a different approach on that though

#

so we don't have to rely to much on that

#

offloading data to USB

#

brisk glen

forest edge

forest edge

wasn't sure how the offload of the meat was going to be handled and if it was simple as repointing the data path or what

can't believe they gave the rpi3 eemc support through the sdcard but not the rpi4, it's like they hate the rpi4 or something lol

brisk glen

hushed basalt

thats why I only buy modern gear to keep the power and heat generation down

last dirge
#

did I tell you I figured out a way to get a bunch of free stuff from FedEx?

forest edge
#

you rob thier trucks?

last dirge
#

easier than that

#

you wait for someone to build a new house on a road in your zip code with name that's similar enough to yours and as long as your house numbers match, you'll get everything that's supposed to be delivered to the other place until FedEx updates their maps database

#

so far it's been about 18 months

#

unfortuately the other people are old asian people so they haven't gotten anything good

#

after about the 3rd package, I stopped calling FedEx

#

I'll tell the person delivering the package if I actually see them delivering it

forest edge
#

lol

last dirge
#

they delivered insulin to me 4 times

#

good job fuckers

forest edge
#

around here people go on the nextdoor app and state someone stole thier package and they won't call the police if it's on thier doorstep by the next morning

last dirge
#

I always check to make sure it's nothing important before I ignore it

#

today's motherlode is hemorrhoid wipes and denture cleaner tablets

#

pretty sure they tried to deliver a cell phone a few weeks ago but I caught the driver and told him

forest edge
#

lol

#

today's motherlode is hemorrhoid wipes and denture cleaner tablets
@last dirge sure the package didn't have @clear ferry name on it?

@last dirge you used Doods? I will probably use it if they support it on RPI.

last dirge
#

no

last plaza
#

Or at least try it. I have got a good TF setup at home.

last dirge
#

I don't yet have enough infrastructure to deal with something like that

#

I'd have to section off the IP cameras on a different vlan

last plaza
#

You don’t need infrastructure to consume pre-trained models.

last dirge
#

and my NUC's only got a single network input

#

I don't want to flood my network with RTSP streams just so something can look at it

last plaza
#

Yes, it is very simple, no need for extra hardware or infrastructure

#

Ah!

#

You don’t have to stream anything. You use snapshot on camera and feed that to TF or Doods. That’s all. No real-time streaming is really required.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, my process is:

  1. Motion reports activity to HA
  2. HA Snapshots the stream
  3. Doods processes the snapshot
last dirge
#

all of my motion processing is done on the NVR

#

and there's no way to get that data out of the NVR

clever mortar
#

Can't even get a notification alert/push/whatever?

last dirge
#

not through any useful method

#

it's a pretty crappy NVR that's 6 years old

#

I can have it flip a bit on one of two outputs

#

or email

clever mortar
#

"awesome"

last dirge
#

you know it

scenic radish
#

anyone have recommendations on NVRs for a multi-unit residential project? five buildings, would like one camera on the exterior of each building. project i'm heading up as part of my condo board

clever mortar
#

For that, going all in on one brand would be logical

last dirge
#

Synology + Surveillance Station?

clever mortar
#

All Hikvision or all Unifi for example

#

Personally, yeah, NAS or MotionEye and a bunch of whatever cameras

uncut moon
#

Hi there all - Don't know if there is a more correct channel to use, so bear with me.
Currently using HA for a bunch of automation stuff as well as the use of the app to control lights from a far. Using the Homekit integration to control various lights and stuff and then Siri shortcuts to control garage door, front door lock, etc.
Last thing I'd really love to integrate is Music - I can quite easily get some stuff working via Chromecast Audio and control stuff, but I'd like to be able to just hand a guest an iPad or Android tablet or something, and then a single device in KIOSK mode is able to control lights, search Spotify/Google Play/Apple Music/Tidal, etc. for content as well as use playlists of course. Does such a thing exist?

last dirge
#

@uncut moon I think Plex can do that

forest edge
#

@scenic radish I would not go cheap on that project. you'll regret it long haul

clever mortar
uncut moon
#

I've got Plex and I could get Tidal, but then I wind up with having a Plex app for Media and HA for everything else, would love a single app experience

last dirge
#

skalalalalalalalalalala has a pretty neat distributed system

scenic radish
#

problem is it seems ridiculous to have a single camera with a single NVR in each building, but i'm not really sure what the alternative would be...

last dirge
#

@scenic radish point to point wifi

clever mortar
#

Backhaul between the buildings to a central location

last dirge
#

or physical backhaul

clever mortar
#

Unifi and Mikrotik do a range of gear for it

scenic radish
#

ah good point

clever mortar
last dirge
#

there's a Unifi rig that's PoE that's got a PoE output to a camera with a wifi cannon on it

scenic radish
#

πŸ₯« πŸ”›

last dirge
#

you just have to power it

clever mortar
#

PoE is "handy"

last dirge
#

yep

#

as long as it's the right voltage, that is

scenic radish
#

yeah i'd prefer POE in this scenario

#

less cable to run

last dirge
#

you can put the wifi thing anywhere

#

just single PoE to the camera

#

I think the Ubiquiti stuff is the lower voltage PoE
