@clear ferry Why are WD green's cheap?

clear ferry

because they are shite ? 🀣

fading zodiac
#

No but really

#

I've had this 1 TB WD green with 4 years power on time for 50 euro.

i bought it in like 2012 and it broke in 2018?

clear ferry

they are fine for offline storage probably, but not for anything prodution wise or performance wise

velvet horizonBOT
clear ferry
#

go OPNsense then

fading zodiac
#

My knowledge is 0

#

on this

clear ferry
#

virtualized routers are fine and fun, but I prefer hardware routers, unless you know how to secure your network pipes over virtualized networking

fading zodiac
#

In my country they use routers from the ISP

clear ferry
#

most users do, in all countries

fading zodiac
#

but we get TV and ETH and phone bundled

#

on vlan

#

with the router.

#

There is not a seperate modem involved.

clear ferry
#

we do do, but I just streched a VLAN with the internet connection to the TV box

#

so my TV box goes to the internet directly, while all other hosts go through my OPNsense router

#

because IGMP is a PITA to route

#

especially when they use both v2 and v3

fading zodiac
#

I don't have the cash for a router

#

nor do i have the patience and knowledge to sort it all out

#

I just want a VPN server on the nas so i can get in my network from anywere

clear ferry
#

then you don't need a virtualized router either

#

just run wireguard and terminate the connection on the inside of your network 🀒

fading zodiac
#

Heh

hushed basalt
#

I need to set up a virtual router

fading zodiac
#

Is it usefull to put it in a VM?

I have an ask - which is probably like asking about religion. I currently have a ton of RF devices to control lights (example https://www.trust.com/en/product/71015-built-in-switch-acm-1000). They are okay and (at the time of choice) mostly cheap. As it is purely RF they are also pretty dumb. Signals are send fire-and-forget and no on/off status is reportable (other than by the device who sent the signal, which is not based on status but only based on 'signal was sent'). I have a chance to now switch to something smarter - which way to go?

hushed basalt
#

Forced air?

last dirge
#

yeah, central HVAC

#

unless you live in a crackerbox, splits are dumb

hushed basalt
#

Why

#

They use a fraction of the energy and you don't have to balance room returns

last dirge
#

because for my house I'd need at least 7

#

cool, 7 condensors

#

seems efficient

hushed basalt
#

You can have minisplits run off outdoor units

#

Plus that's a lot of ductwork in a vented attic

#

There's a reason a lot of high efficiency homes use splits

scenic radish
#

reminds me for some reason, does anyone here still like CDs?

last dirge
#

@hushed basalt insulation and triple-glazed windows has more to do with it than minisplits

hushed basalt
#

What is your attic temperature like

#

And is it airtight

#

Insulation and glazing have nothig to do with split vs ducted

last dirge
#

attic temperature is usually within 10 degrees of ambient

#

insulation and glazing have everything to do with "high efficiency"

#

ESPECIALLY if they subscribe to the BOFA method of efficiency

hushed basalt
#

You're completely missing the point

#

All things being equal, a split system is far more efficient than ducted

last dirge
#

depends on how you're defining efficiency

and for the types of houses I like, they'd be horrible

I think a lot of places are going to realize that if people work from home they don't have to have leases for office space and even if people are less productive, they'll still come out ahead

Yep. Our productivity certainly increased- folks don’t even take vacation and work longer hours without breaks

Ahhhhhh, som since it started last year, that's where the 19 cames from mindblown

might even be so bold as to suggest a solution to us being almost at 100% capacity as far as desks: rotating WFH schedule where you share a desk with one other person

last plaza
#

I’ve heard TCS is going to WFH 80% by 2025.

#

Out of 4 million employees. Most big companies will do the same.

#

I’d say companies don’t need to assign desks. Make all desks a β€œhotel” desks - where people come and go.

#

Only keep a handful of them and let folks book for them. Like people do for conference rooms.

scenic radish
#

yup

last dirge
#

the place I work the whole IT floor is hoteling

#

except one guy

#

he's deaf so he's got an assigned desk

so he doesn't have to carry all of his adaptive shit around

plus he has to sit where he can see the visual indicators for the fire alarm

#

there's a row of lockers where everybody puts their personal stuff and everybody's got the same laptop so all of the desks have dual monitors and a USB docking station

last plaza
#

It is definitely changing the landscape for sure! We just have to wait and see.

I'm 332 months old

#

first time reading the man page for ip-address:

Warning: This command and other flush commands are unforgiving. They will cruelly purge all the addresses.
goodbye, cruel world

clear ferry
#

More man files should be like that

scenic radish
#

i like the aptitude easter egg lol

amber bramble
#

Wink is going subscription only

scenic radish
#

oof

clever mortar
#

Yeah, and in only a week

scenic radish
#

wow and you can't do anything without it

clever mortar
#

Should you choose not to sign up for a subscription you will no longer be able to access your Wink devices from the app, with voice control or through the API, and your automations will be disabled on May 13.

scenic radish
#

it's not even like some features are disabled, all are...

clever mortar
#

Yup

#

But, it's also likely a sign that the end of days is coming for them anyway

scenic radish
#

looks like they're about to have a lot of pissed off customers

#

yeah that's probably the final nail in the coffin

#

wut

clever mortar
#

That's probably the number of staff left...

scenic radish
#

lmao

clever mortar
#

Like this or you're fired

amber bramble
#

i doubt they even have 28 staff left

scenic radish
#

i straight-up don't buy anything anymore unless it has a local API

#

or is zigbee/z-wave

clever mortar
#

That's still local API (of sorts)

scenic radish
#

true, just feels weird to say for some reason

#

like... the only device i have connected to home assistant that doesn't have a local API is my security system, and it supports homekit so i can connect it via homekit controller for local control

#

it's just not out of beta yet so it's still finicky enough for me to rely on the cloud API

clever mortar
#

The closest I have to cloud centric is voice control, and weather information

scenic radish
#

ah right, and any voice control is cloud-based, but i don't rely on that for anything critical

#

automations first, voice control second, manual third (or when automations aren't practical)

forest edge
#

Tediore says, "Alexa turn on light" then reaches over and flips the light switch.

scenic radish
#

pffh

#

google assistant son

forest edge
#

his woman complains that vvoice control isn't working and Tediore responds with, "you haven't asked me to do anything yet."

last plaza
#

@scenic radish did you do anymore parodies?

scenic radish
#

nah, though i've actually considered it lol

#

ugh looks like i'm gonna make my 1000-calorie garlic cream sauce with tonight's dinner

forest edge
#

how do you know splooge is 1000 calories?

low harness
#

I've heard it measured in TBs of data. Though there's a lot of repetition, so the compressed size isn't very imperssive.

hushed basalt
#

Wtf is wink

scenic radish
#

Home automation platform

#

With a cloud based hub

hushed basalt
#

So homeautomation as a service

scenic radish
#

Lol pretty much

hushed basalt
#

Why wouldn't that target market just use google home

scenic radish
#

I guess that's smartthings too

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I fail to see their differentiator

forest edge
#

sonoff uses wink

#

feel sorry for those people

#

hmm myq intergration seems to have brokered

scenic radish
#

Get with the times old man

#

That's been posted several times the last few daze

#

There's a fix on the way though

forest edge
#

the myq thing?

#

it just broke last night lol

scenic radish
#

Yeah

hushed basalt
#

Okay Google, what is the Times

forest edge
#

it makes no sense that ALL tilt sensors either work with proprietary hubs or are z-wave/zigbee

scenic radish
scenic radish
#

How did I know you'd make that joke

hushed basalt
#

You should try sous vide

scenic radish
#

I don't have the patience for that lol

hushed basalt
#

Chicken breast is a PITA to cook under direct heat

#

It takes like an hour with zero interaction haha

#

Just put it on 45 minutes before you start making the rest and play Halo inbetween

scenic radish
#

I've got it down to a science. Dip the chicken in oil before seasoning and it prevents it from burning on the grill and drying out

#

I love grilled meat

#

I have been curious about sous vide though

hushed basalt
#

Poached eggs in sous vide is amazing

#

Only takes like 14 minutes too

#

I have an Anova, it was very cheap but works fine

#

And TBH you can use good quality ziplock bags for 90% of stuff you don't need a vacuum sealer

scenic radish
#

Interesting

#

Ah that's good to hear

hushed basalt
#

I have a $1000 chamber vacuum sealer but nvm that

scenic radish
#

Wtf lol

#

The Grand Sealer ℒ️

hushed basalt
#

It's a chamber vacuum so It's the same style meat packers use

#

It can do liquids which was a must for me since 90% of the meals I cook are sauce based

scenic radish
#

Ah neato

#

Grand Sauce ℒ️ based?

hushed basalt
#

Also I have never thrown out frozen meat or meals due to freezer burn

#

That alone has probably paid for itself

#

Plus you can deep freeze stuff for years

scenic radish
#

That's pretty nice

#

You could probably save over a Grand ℒ️

modern scaffold
#

Hey Guys, anyone running home server with traefik2+guacamole?

forest edge
#

why can't people just do normal home networking with normal routers and devices lol

modern scaffold
#

why people just cant wear trash bags and do nothing πŸ˜„ that's why we are human πŸ˜‰ we like to complicate things

#

πŸ˜‰

scenic radish
#

#

Wait, are we not supposed to wear trash bags?

modern scaffold
#

eager vortex

@scenic radish ill take the lot thanks and the bowl

scenic radish
#

Lol...it's pretty good

#

@modern scaffold I think Deez wears garbage bags

hushed basalt
#

@modern scaffold I use traefik2 but I don't use guacamole

#

What's the problem

modern scaffold
#

@hushed basalt the problem is with guacamole, can't figure out how to connect via ssh to the server.

hushed basalt
#

Is this in a container?
