Just found some c++ code I wrote for a class 6 years ago

#

Guess how much of it I remember

wet pilot

None
hushed basalt

True

Once you dabble in a few languages you realise how fundamentally similar most of them are

Especially OOP

Man American Amazon is slow

Ok, I found the app and it found my tv immediately.

hushed basalt

I don't think I'll order anything from Amazon.com again for a while

wet pilot

Yep, they're very similar. Just slightly different syntax and sugar

green inlet

Ha, before corona, if you ordered the right thing at the right time you could get same day delivery

Hey, ya'll trying to figure out where the appropriate place is to ask this question.: How do you get Developer Tools->Services to show Service Data (JSON, optional) Right now, all I can see is Service Data (YAML, optional)? (I'm using Home Assistant on Mac, not Hassio) I've searched far and wide for a couple of days, forums, documentation, youtube, google etc. but no closer to an answer.

static schooner
#

YAML was supported as of a few releases ago

#

YAML is a superset of JSON

#

So the question is really: what are you trying to do that it matters?

wet pilot
#

YAML also accepts json for the most part

surreal axle
#

what does this do ? optimistic: false

#

TY if any one has time to explain to a noob

static schooner
#

In what context?

#

This is the lounge channel

surreal axle
#

I was just wonder what that yaml value actualy does

static schooner
#

Nothing by itself

surreal axle
#

its part of a mqtt light entry

static schooner

Depends on where it’s being used

Ah, useful

Trying to create the json for a service and entity selection for node-red. Sorry, didn't know where to ask the question. I was going to use it in node-red, but not sure i needed.

static schooner
#

But have you tried just putting your JSON there?

deep bane
#

gotcha, well I wanted to be sure I was created the json correct so I was going to use developer tool so see if I created it correctly. Thanks for your advice.

hushed basalt
#

@deep bane yaml is a subset of json

wet pilot
#

false

#

100% of json -> yaml. The opposite is not true

#

yaml supports comments for example

hushed basalt
#

Yes but yaml is just human readable/writeable config that gets churned to json by the parser

#

The comments don't get parsed

wet pilot
#

yup, so yaml superset

#

we should all do toml πŸ˜„

Also, military time > wtf am pm

Eh

#

We're a am/pm country

clear ferry

You suck

hushed basalt
#

So we think and communicate in 12 hr

#

So it's a cognitive load swapping between the two

#

But computer systems and production schedules always 24hr for me

clear ferry
#

It is already implicit if it is morning or evening in military time, so makes no sense to do am pm

wet pilot
#

and the sun doesn't care about or measurements

hushed basalt
#

Unless you grew up on 12 hr

#

Then it's what your brain uses

wet pilot
#

noon is pretty arbitrary πŸ˜„

hushed basalt

Noon is when the sun is exactly between east and west

clear ferry

Like, 12.00 am, is the most useless measurement ever

Is it noon or night

Who knows

hushed basalt

12pm is noon

scenic radish

Yeah 12am is 00:00

12am is night

If you want drinkable coffee in Paris, look for an Australian

I wasn't old enough to enjoy coffee when I was in AU/NZ so I can't elaborate if your coffee is superior

hushed basalt

You can easily find good to great coffee in any cafe that's not a franchise

wet pilot

US coffee game is pretty good

American coffee is... 95% Starbucks it seems, all hotels and all offices I've been in have only had Starbucks ElonMusk

No wait that URL was wrong

There is/was a free version

#

Yup, still is

clear ferry
#

Really

#

I only run the server version and wipe 400 drives in a go

thick dragon
#

Yeah, the free version was recommended. Doesn't do a deep scrub tho and according to the comparison, can't be mounted to USB which seems weird.

#

Sorry, not blancco, dban.

clever mortar
#

Deep scrub is mostly marketing BS

thick dragon
#

Realised that it'll be easier to sell if I say "comes pre-installed with Windows 10" though, so just gonna install it but not configure then let whoever buys it find out they need to buy a license πŸ˜‰

clever mortar
#

Once upon a time a single pass would leave enough of the previous data that it could be recovered, it just wasn't easy. For a long time though it's irrelevant, recovering data from a single pass is time consuming and horribly expensive. Only those with very deep pockets will bother (so countries/organised crime).

hushed basalt
#

Also it's good practice to encrypt drives when you buy them

#

Then when you don't want it anymore you just erase the key

hushed basalt

Is it just me or is the whole google cloud platform a spagetti mess

thick dragon

Haha, I have zero experience with cloud services, so I just assumed when the Google Assistant integration for HA was confusing as fuck to set up that it was just cloud services in general that are like that. Good to hear Google is particularly bad then.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I met a security guard at a supermarket who honestly believed it was 5G's fault

Heck, my sister in law believes in psychics...

#

There's a limit to how much you can get people to clue up

#

If you can manage to get people to question their point of view at all that takes a lot of effort

wet pilot
#

especially these days and 100x if politics are involved

#

depending on that topic, the middle ground can be very hard to find

#

and if they are the type to believe in conspiracy theories, it might just be best to avoid those topics all together if you want to continue interacting with that person

wait... 5G doesn't cause organic virus to manifest?!

shy comet

yea that conspiracy theory is floating around

#

people keeping saying look at Sweden who i think banned it?

last plaza

Sweden banned 5G?

#

And Norway too?

#

As with any new tech, will take time! This obviously requires significant infrastructure, and the adoption would take time. Meanwhile there would be skeptics.

Prices will come down as we mass manufacture things

clear ferry
last dirge
#

I started installing my tanks this past weekend

#

gravity feed and head pressure isn't going to be enough to do what I need it to do

#

so I have to add a pump

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I have a pump in the bottom of my catch

last dirge
#

I can't do "bottom"

#

since it's not a single cistern

forest edge

last dirge

it's two 275 gallon IBC totes stacked up

forest edge

last dirge
#

no

#

this is only for my garden stuff

forest edge
#

or is this just for garden stuffs

#

oh

last dirge
#

if it works out well, I may eventually get more tanks and use it for lawn irrigation

forest edge
#

your trying to get hose pressure out of it with the pump?

last dirge
#

yeah

#

if it goes past using it for garden stuff, I may have to scrap the 12V requirement

forest edge
#

not sure of a perma solution since most require to be dropped down in the tank but pool drainage pumps often can be both submersed or have double hoses connected to them and will give hose pressure. I bought one from walmart like 10 years ago that works like a champ for me spraying the fence line with my hot tub water when we drain it

#

you'd have to find an RVV water pump to keep that 12v

#

that be more pricey too

last dirge
#

the RV water pumps are super low volume

forest edge
#

limitations of the 12v. don't think you would find one any stronger

last dirge
#

that one's about 5 gallons per minute

#

the 12V ones are only about 5 liters per minute

forest edge
#

you need something around 600GPH for typical city water pressure

last dirge
#

there's this

#

which would solve a few problems

#

but it's 110V

forest edge
#

I think mine is like 450GPH or something but it's also 110v

last dirge
#

that'd need 1200W continuous

#

those get spendy

forest edge
#

get like a 3rd tank or something for the other two to drain into or something

last dirge
#

those bilge pumps don't do much pressure

forest edge
#

GPH is GPH

last dirge
#

doesn't matter if it can't push 20 feet of head

forest edge
#

mount the two mobile cisterns up on a stand or something. pick up one of those plastic 55 gallon drums and place infront. drop the submerged pump in the barrel and increase the drain lines of the cistern to the biggest size you can and the way you go lol

#

well that one i linked was 15 bucks, they make better ones lol

#

like the pump i have etc

#

I think it was like 40 something

#

can pump up over 100 feet vertical

#

infact

#

you could even look at sump pumps with a 55 gallon barrel

#

they make 12vv sump pumps that can do what you want

last dirge
#

the cisterns aren't moving

#

I don't have anywhere feasible for them to go

forest edge
#

can't make a stand right ehere they are to raise them?

last dirge
#

no, it's under my deck

forest edge
#

oh

last dirge
#

and I can't go much higher or I won't be able to get the pipes into the top of the top one

forest edge
#

well so much for that idea lol

#

and there is noway to drop a pump inside one?

#

if you can get a oump in one it will siphon just fine from the one next to it

last dirge
#

I'd have to drill a hole to do that

#

which ain't happenin

forest edge
#

so?

last dirge
#

the two tanks will sit one atop the other

#

the output of the bottom one will feed into the top of the bottom one

#

once the bottom one is full the top one will fill

#

and once it's filled, it'll back up out of an overflow and that'll go to a drain basin

#

so any holes that weren't manufactured into the bottom tank aren't going in or there will be a literal ton of pressure on whatever I use to seal the hole

forest edge
#

lol burry a 5 gallon bucket and stick the pump in that and have the bottom cistern drain into the bucket

last dirge
#

I'm already skeptical of putting the big 3" hole in the top one for my bulkhead connection

#

once the thing's full of water I'm pretty sure the two tons of water is going to come blasting out of the bottom ball valve when I open it

#

I'm just not sure what it'll do any time between completely full and half full

forest edge
#

you won't get what you want without a pump no matter what. you'd have to raise them pretty high like city water towers to get the pressure your looking for

#

even those use pumps

last dirge
#

yeah, which is why I'm looking at pumping solutions

forest edge
#

thinking with your setup that harbor freight 50 buck 110vv pump is your only solution

@last dirge I would recommend a Siemens Logo (around 120USD or so on eBay), has modbus for HASS integration, has nice control like PI loops, designed for hobbyists, IoT and those starting out. Has examples for tank control and pressure monitoring.

I have worked in water industry for Water Treatment Plants so I have bit of insight if you need any guidance

last dirge

that's spendy

hushed basalt

@rare condor you're putting the idea of using PLCs in my head

I've always wanted to put rapsberry pis in each room/cluster of room to wire sensors and switches etc

#

But maybe a good PLC would be a better option

#

I want to avoid wireless and batteries like the plague for my permanent setups

rare condor
#

@last dirge That's literally the cheapest PLC money can buy, in that case you probably want an Arduino based solution

#

PLCs aren't cheap they are however incredibly over engineered and reliable

last dirge
#

yeah, I know

#

this isn't mission cricital stuff but if the price difference was negligible I'd do it

rare condor
#

@last dirge It isn't unfortunately the cheapest PLC will cost you $120 USD, keep in mind you are getting something that can survive EMI, voltage spikes, capable of interfacing with industrial equipment, uses industrial protocols, has in built 24v tolenent IO, AI and relay controlled DO. Its a different beast

tough vault
#

Click! PLCs from Automation Direct are workhorses for us

#

we use them for everything, and yeah, they're about $120 or so with ethernet, but you can stack GPIO on them for miles

#

and they crash maybe.... actually, never seen one crash.

#

Um hey question, is there any verdict as to what's going on with the CPU hogging on 108?

rare condor
#

Are you using Modbus there are some big bugs with 0.108 with Modbus

tough vault
#

ha, OK no two different things. First off, yeah with the CLICk PLCs we use TCP Modbus and it's a rock

#

Secondly, some weirdness for some users on 108 where the CPU / RAM usage goes up after each restart, creeps up until the CPU is sizzling and it runs like hell

#

having zero to do with MODBUS

rare condor

Well I am having a bug due to async implementation of new Modbus component where its eating CPU under 0.108

but gas is now under $3 in los angeles, this summer everybody will buy giant trucks, and next summer it'll be $5.50

clear ferry
#

@tough vault let me tell you about Norwegian gas prices, before Corona we were at $2.5 per liter

hushed basalt
#

That's about $8

tough vault
#

Yeah I've been to Europe

clear ferry
#

Our gas prices are 85-90% tax though

#

So stimulated high

hushed basalt
#

Ours are like 40% tax

tough vault
#

Keep putting that sovereign wealth fund to EV subsidies, you'll have the last laugh, I'll guarantee it.

hushed basalt
#

I'd love to not have to drive though

#

Bring on the auto taxi drones

clear ferry
#

It's a jokez they should have stopped the subsidiary at 100k cars tbh

#

Same with road toll

hushed basalt
#

No toll roads here

midnight adder
#

same here

hushed basalt
#

Viva la resistance

tough vault
#

Hey so, question, am I stupid for wanting to move to New Zealand?

#

Chew on that while I go wiggle a faulty USB cable πŸ˜›

clear ferry
#

NZ is nice

#

I was there 25 years ago or so

#

From what I can remember

#

Nice climate, friendly people and nice houses

tough vault
#

yeah, it did seem that way. Whereabouts were you?

clear ferry
#

Auckland area

#

Think we were down in Hamilton too

tough vault
#

Yep. Hamilton seemed pretty, and I don't mean this in a bad way at all, but real just average and normal. Rented a motorhome from a guy there.

#

My kids keep asking about it, every time we see something green, they're like "Oh hey it's like new zealand" and I just sit there and scratch my head and think about smog, shitty schools, crime, droughts, wildfires

#

anecdotally, crime is up since the coronavirus shutdown here in Los Angeles

#

but at least people aren't dying in droves here.

#

drivebys, car chases and domestic violence especially are getting weird

#

sorry, I'll shut up, this isn't a therapy session

forest edge
#

Is it so wrong to want to go to war with china after everything and then finding out they are charging other countries for N95 masks that fall apart in the shipping container before even being taken out?

tough vault
#

yeah, seems wrong

#

I doubt it's government policy to be sleazy businesspeople

clear ferry
#

@tough vault come to Norway, we have green too, and white, and EVs lmao

tough vault
#

can American emergency room physicians practice there with their american credentials?

clear ferry
#

And you won't get shot here

forest edge
#

They charged Italy millions of dollars for PPE supplies etc and Italy found out that China had sold them their own supplies they had "donated" to china when the outbreak first started.

tough vault
#

hah! fuckers! Seriously?

clear ferry
#

No idea, but I'm pretty sure we honour medical degrees from most western countries

tough vault
#

I grew up in Maine, so I'm familiar with the winters, though not as intense as a proper arctic winter

clear ferry
#

And health workers are well paid here

tough vault
#

but those winters....my wife would never have it

vast dove
#

I dont think all health workers agree with you @clear ferry Nurses etc..

forest edge
#

not all those in the medical field can even afford health insurance. how fucked up is that

tough vault
#

doctor student debt is like... a thing, ya know....wow. yeah it is.

clear ferry
#

@vast dove I have one sister who is a nurse, one who is a radiologist, my mother is a teacher in health related studies, I don't know about your experience peepoShrug

forest edge
#

how many times have you been told to bend ovver and grab your ankles atx?

clear ferry
#

@tough vault oh we don't pay excessive amounts to get an education either

#

@forest edge by you? Often

forest edge
#

ohhh yet you still comply

tough vault
#

the part about not being able to afford health insurance is a real shame

clear ferry
#

Universal health care

#

Hello

forest edge
#

our heath system is a real shame

tough vault
#

Kaiser in California isn't bad

#

it "just works"

#

but the private insurance thing? What a nightmare, through and through

wet pilot
#

if you live nearby one of their facilities

clear ferry
#

Universal health care even covers IVF treatment here

tough vault
#

Yeah that's just the thing

#

you need to be near them, but as a model, it's a pretty good one, one worth replicatinig

#

because the switch to universal healthcare is like just flipping a switch from there

#

anyway, good golly, what a mess

#

hard to make an honest living anymore

#

when we were kids, being a doctor meant something

forest edge
#

not if you go off grid

tough vault
#

now it just means long-ass hours, massive liability, and crushing student debt

#

@forest edge you mean, pot farming?

forest edge
#

herbal medicines and stock up on iodine

#

no i mean like those who live in like Alaska or other parts where you don't pay taxes etc

tough vault
#

well, OK sure, but good luck getting a blood transfusion or kidney stones dealt with

forest edge
#

100% off grid

#

yea there is no doctors or hospitals

#

but you said honest living

tough vault
#

no that's true

#

my dad's doing some shit like that (and growing weed) but I realize that one day I'm going to find out that he's been dead for months

#

has a 12V battery

#

a generator

#

and 5 dogs

forest edge
#

well if he's growing his own food and the water is clean enough

tough vault
#

chainsaw

forest edge
#

he might outlast you

tough vault
#

hah yeah I tried to convince him to grow food

#

"fuck that, I'll just go to the food bank co-op"

forest edge
#

lol

tough vault
#

so I'm growing potatoes in dirty Los Angeles soil and he's feeding chicken thighs to his dogs and eating apple strudel for himself 2 meals a day

#

It's really something, but I still love my dad

#

so I guess my point is , it all goes to show there's lots of ways to live

clear ferry
#

Ah, Oslo is so nice and quiet to drive in and park in during lock down

strange vapor
#

Booted my Cobalt Raq 4.... ASP, Frontpage Extenstion, PHP 4, Interbase 6....

#

The HD sounds a bit dodgy, but everythign works πŸ™‚

rare condor
#

Damn it there a giant huntsmen spider blocking my IP camera

#

literally happens every week now

clever mortar
#

Turn off the IR

rare condor
#

Good idea then I can't see anything including the spider

clever mortar
#

Put up a separate IR flood

#

Insects are attracted to the IR source, so if you "move" it away from the camera, your view won't be blocked

rare condor
#

That requires effort

clever mortar
#

So does complaining πŸ˜›

rare condor
#

I don't like doing things that require me to do stuff

#

like moving

#

πŸ˜›

#

Whats the code to fix it

clever mortar
#

Reboot reality

rare condor
#

I prefer simple software fixes like a secret lazer spider killing api?

clever mortar
#

Probably hidden somewhere there

#

Along with controls for the orbital mind control lasers

hushed basalt
#

@rare condor I've found the hikvision exir stuff to be less likely to attract bugs

#

Maybe simply because it's more efficient so less heat loss

rare condor
#

Its ok I found a blow torch

hushed basalt
#

Ah the old bait and switch

rare condor
#

πŸ˜›

hushed basalt
#

You could also try water

rare condor
#

Nah I can't be bothered replacing them tbh, they are decent cameras

#

I just have to deal with cleaning them once in a while

hushed basalt
#

Also surface spray

#

Not on anything clear though

#

Especially anything DEET based

rare condor
#

I have 140l of isopropyl alcohol probs end up using that

hushed basalt
#

Make some hand santiser

rare condor
#

Yeah probs could

#

I just spray it directly on my hands

lapis drift
#

hello everyone. i guess here is the place to introduce myself. I am Toji and I am running home assistant 108.2 on a R-Pi3 (might update to 108.3 soon...we'll see) and although I ahve been messing around with HA since 0.78 I still have no real clue of how everything works (copy pasting what I needed together ever sicne I started) I am not a programmer so sometimes the documentation doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I'll try to solve problems on my own but there will undouptedly things i'll need help with

rare condor
#

Cool welcome Toji

fading zodiac
#

Is there people from Openhab here?

clever mortar
#

We have some escapees

fading zodiac
#

I'm trying to get to the guy doing the deCONZ Openhab binding πŸ™‚

tired river
#

Its HACS but it does not seem to work correctly

clever mortar

@fading zodiac Maybe try the deCONZ Discord then πŸ˜‰

tired river
