last plaza
#

ah! not sure you can integrate with HA

last dirge
#

they're IP cameras

#

I'd be absolutely shocked if you couldn't

last plaza
#

I guess you can use generic cameras

last dirge
#

my DAHUA bullet cameras work with HA

clear ferry
#

@last dirge my $20 cameras work fine with ha, that would only be $240 lmao

last dirge
#

you've got 4K cameras with color "night vision" for $20?

clear ferry
#

No, but do I need it? pepoThink

#

1080 is good enough for me, I can read licence plates in my driveway at night

fathom sparrow
#

why would you need 4k cameras?

last dirge
#

more information is more better

fathom sparrow
#

yeah but if you want to do antying useful with the images good luck getting a computer that can do it

#

throw real time recognition right out the window

#

waste of money that would be

last dirge
#

it's for CCTV

#

and the CCTV hardware can do all of that

fathom sparrow
#

and that all goes for crazy amounts of money

clear ferry
last dirge
#

it's not all that expensive

clear ferry
#

It probably films on 4k but analyses on 720 or less

fathom sparrow
#

yeah, no way it's doing 4k

#

for perspective, I work in an industry where we do live image processing. Computers cannot handle 4k yet.

#

maybe at 2 or 3 fps with a few second delay

#

even then, customers always say ef it and perform things with pixel packing

#

so it goes faster

last dirge
#

for motion purposes, lower resolution is fine

#

for identification purposes, higher resolution is better

clear ferry
#

For your eyes, not for AI

last dirge
#

"here you go officer, here's video of the guy that broke into my car"

#

"thanks, good thing I'm not a computer or I couldn't process this"

#

aaaand scene

fathom sparrow
#

yah, we pixel pack pretty much all of our images when performing measurements and we measure items sub micron.

#

I think you've read too many sifi novels

#

a micron is 1/1000th of a millimeter btw just to give you some perspective. You don't need resolution that you say. Maybe in 10 years when processing power is greater, but in the current day in age, everything is optimized to work with shitty images.

last plaza
#

I connect my camera feed to my TV, it looks great with higher quality cameras, not so much on crappy cameras like web cams.

#

when I look at my TV, sometimes it feels I'm really looking outside - amazing quality, and we love it

#

we can see around the house without stepping out

last dirge
#

@fathom sparrow you're completely missing what I'm saying

last plaza
#

crystal clear quality

last dirge
#

if there's a still image of a person

#

4K has SIGNIFICANTLY more pixels that make up that person

#

I don't care about processing it, computers doing anything but writing the stream to disk

#

there's more stored information in an image so if you zoom it doesn't look like a Minecraft player

fathom sparrow
#

you still don't need 4k... 5mp is more than enough

last dirge
#

that's its use

last plaza
#

4k is about 8.5 mega pixels

last dirge
#

when I bought the 3MP cameras at my house 7 years ago, that was "more than enough"

#

and it was close to top of the line then

#

so if I were to upgrade, it'd not make sense to try to get a little future proofing

fathom sparrow
#

by all mean, spend your money on 4k and the harddrives to store it

last dirge
#

@last plaza 4K is 33MP

fathom sparrow
#

8.5 mp

#

not 33mp

last plaza
#

4K (3840 x 2160 or 4096 x 2160) is about 8.5 megapixels.

last dirge
#

sorry did the calcs for 8K

last plaza
#

real-time processing of high resolution images can take time - I like realtime viewing of camera feed on my TV, and use lower resolution for processing

clever mortar
#

Yup, I use the low res feed from my camera for motion detection, and the high res for recording

last dirge
#

@clever mortar how did the part of a stove where the gas comes out and you sit a pot get the name of "hob"?

clever mortar
#

English probably stole a word that sounded vaguely similar from some other language

last dirge
#

well, it's a British English thing

#

everybody I know calls it a burner

clever mortar
#

Hob

last dirge
#

which is a lot more German-like

clever mortar
#

The word is a noun meaning approximately "holder", derived from the Old English verb habban "to have, hold"

clear ferry
#

Nörwęgiân probably

last dirge
#

German's very literal

clear ferry
last plaza
#

except the color of he beard, everything else looks correct

clear ferry
clever mortar
#

🤣

fathom sparrow
#

@clear ferry why did you post 2 pictures of yourself?

clever mortar
#

The one on the left is a life like dummy

fathom sparrow
#

Ah ok, that makes sense

clever mortar
#

He's done a cracking job of it too

clear ferry
#

@fathom sparrow if I only could grow a beard

#

I know 12yo girls with more beards and mustache than me

last plaza
#

I am growing beard now - thanks to coronavirus!

#

no office, no need to shave!

clear ferry
#

The stubble I get looks like a child's representation of a beard in pictures

#

So my wife tells me to shave it

#

So I don't look like a hobo

last plaza
#

lol - hard part is the itching - takes time to get used to it and pass that phase

@tidal bronze you do any smart garden stuff yet?

safe vale

last dirge

just got word my county issued a shelter in place order so I'll have a lot of tinkering time soon

#

and I have a week off when I was supposed to be on vacation

clear ferry
#

I'm hopefully building my smart greenhouse this year

last dirge
#

have you found a reasonably priced moisture sensor?

clear ferry
#

Air or soil?

#

I have three different soil ones I'm going to test

#

And two different air ones

clever mortar
#

For air, the Xiaomi ones are pretty well priced

last dirge
#

soil

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge just the rainmachine nothing else yet. I want to add the soil sensor but the state run irrigation weather station is less that .5 miles from my place and rainmachine reads from that api direct. So far pretty good.

low harness
#

I recently introduced a motion sensor in my office, so the lights turn on when I enter if it's dark outside.
Guys, I don't know if you know this already, but this Automation thing you can do with hass is really kind of neat!

#

I can definitely get used to this

last dirge
#

@low harness did you write YAML or use the UI to create the automation?

low harness
#

The UI

last dirge
#

then you have no idea how much cooler it is now than it was a year ago 🙂

tidal bronze
#

Yes its neat indeed. Wait till you make your entire house motion and tensor base.

shy comet

motion lights is one of those things you never knew you needed until you ahve it

tidal bronze
#

Can't live without it

shy comet
#

very easy to get used to it

clever mortar
#

Same with illuminance sensor triggered lights

tidal bronze

Lux is crucial for my use case.

clever mortar

Our living room lights are never turned on manually now

i still need to do lux

tidal bronze

@shy comet do diy.

low harness

I do, actually. I restarted my setup the other week, and have tried most things now. Yaml, python_scripts, appdaemon and gui to automate my decoration lights.

shy comet

@tidal bronze really with ESP and all that? eh

low harness
#

GUI is best by far.

last dirge

@dull chasm do you have any low-voltage DC gear with your fishtank setup?

tidal bronze

@shy comet yep one wemos/node and bh1750

#

You are good to go

@last dirge I'm using a lot of 12v relays and valves with my greenhouse

last dirge

I like Z-Wave sensors for being able to have them update on interval and step change

Mqtt ftw update at 1 sec if you want to 😀

last plaza
#

No kidding. I’ll go to a hotel or someone else’s house and walk into a room and wait because the lights didn’t turn on and I’m confused
@calm marten it’s the opposite reaction when guests come to our place!

last plaza
#

I can’t get any Wemos or esps for a month or so.

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza I am still trying to fully automate guest scenarios without the minimotes

last plaza
#

AliExpress or gearbest I assume will take even longer

clear ferry
#

@tidal bronze the Xiaomi motion one can be hacked to update every 5 second I saw, going to try it out later

tidal bronze
#

Saw that but no lux

clear ferry

It updates lux on motion, so if you are in the room it will update though

tidal bronze

Lux and motion which model?

last plaza

@tidal bronze I do. Got plenty. That’s why I don’t need lux sensor as I always turn on lights when I walk into the rooms.

tidal bronze

oh without light level ?

shy comet
#

@last plaza thats waht i thought too but having lights on at 100% late at night isnt fun lol

last plaza

Yep.

#

That’s the only part I don’t like. In the bathrooms at night. I need to work on that

tidal bronze
#

Won't work at my place upstairs pretty bright only few hours of lights needed.

shy comet

yea tahts what i plan to do with the lux sensor

#

during day id like lights to be brigher but at night not so much

tidal bronze
#

Nice

shy comet
#

i guess i coudl follow elevation

but some rooms get more sunlight than others

tidal bronze

If you add one outdoor and get baseline Vs inside areas. That's what I do.

last plaza

The Bh1750s are available. Wemos is not. I have to wait for a month

shy comet

i have a bloomsky outside lol

tidal bronze

But you need live updates almost.

clever mortar
shy comet

yea its closer to 10

last plaza
#

@shy comet got bloom energy?

clever mortar
#

One option it has is to adjust brightness according to elevation

tidal bronze

That's something I am looking into @clever mortar interesting indeed

shy comet

@last plaza more like bloom free 😛

last plaza

lol

shy comet

i need to dig into circadian more

clever mortar

I use it for colour temperature, where it's pretty awesome

clear ferry

I run it for all my lights

#

Both brightness and colour temp

tidal bronze

This means suns hitting the main kitchen area direct. No lights needed 🙂

shy comet

anyone got a simple example of circadian lights with elevation?

It looks fairly simple

tidal bronze
#

I wish I wired lux sensors in ceiling to get ambient light levels at night. One of these days.

last plaza
#

Lux sensors should be ground level IMO

tidal bronze
#

I have ground level but with LED read slightly off

last plaza

Don’t care if it is bright on the ceiling, I need it to be bright enough where I walk 😝

tidal bronze

I want the 0 to 50 range

You don't dance on the ceiling?
@clever mortar only during week days

clever mortar
tidal bronze

LMAO. I want reflected light level.

last plaza

Especially when I work from home

tidal bronze

If you have a ground level lux sensor and you turn on 6 or 8 led's the reading is pointless. @last plaza once you get the sensors going you will find out more 😉

hi guys , slightly offtopic ,but i wonder what ya all are using for SSL ? I'm thinking about an alternative for duckdns , something wtih a longer life time

clever mortar
#

DuckDNS != SSL

#

DuckDNS is DNS, nothing more

tame cove
#

oops

clever mortar
#

But, why does the DNS TTL concern you?

tame cove
#

right now i update this manually every 2.5 months, it works fine but if i could find somethign with a longer TTL , that would be great

#

lazy XD

#

i'm thinking about something that wanrs me so that i wont forget to update it anymore

clever mortar
#

Manually update the SSL certificate I'm guessing

#

Not the DNS

tame cove
#

yes

clever mortar
#

If you're using LetsEncrypt (I suspect you are) then that's a bug in the software/add-on/whatever you're using

tame cove
#

yes - i'm indeed using LEtsEncrypt

#

on a synology

#

and HA in a docker container

clever mortar
#

What are you using for the certificate update then? Nothing?

#

How do you get it?

tame cove
#

i'm using the synology build-in config tool

#

i can make a screenshot for you , but its in the config - certificate interface of synology

clever mortar
#

You could then buy an SSL certificate and only do this once every year or two

#

However, you'd be better off automating this, and #672217570283094017 may be able to help you there

tame cove
#

Thank you ! yes hmm you brought me on an idea , maybe a docker , just for updating the SSL every week / month

On a NUC (or any non pi hardware) what strategy would you run. 1. have all home related resources on the box like mysql, influx, zwave, mqtt etc. and backup the box to a NAS and or external backup or 2. run just ha (in any form) on the box and use a network shared mysql, influx etc hosted on an external server.

dull chasm
#

docker containers on same machine if it has enough resources

late gate
#

yeah I was kinda thinking the same. Im using an I3 nuc and with hassio on a ubuntu core with influx, mysql etc its using 2 of 16gb ram, 20gb of 256 m2 drive and around 3-4% cpu so seem like its best to just isolate all home related things, though that produce a single point of failure

hushed basalt
#

You'll always have single point of failures in a home setup

#

You'll need redundant power supplies, switches, routers, modems, wans, servers, utilities to have no single point of failure

late gate
#

yeah that is true

hushed basalt
#

Just put everything on one computer

#

I run a dozen containers on a synology nas with a quad core 1.6ghz atom

#

And 8gb of ram

clear ferry
#

Just do two machines, with their own synced storage, one hot, one cold, spin up on second host when doing maintenance on first, easy redundant setup, and in reality the same commands on both to start the docker containers

#

Second host doesn't even have to be as powerful as the first since it will only be used for limited amount of time

#

@hushed basalt you don't have redundant switches at home? lmao

late gate
#

so for example run the I3 as a full smarthome entity with backup and if that fails just spin up a backup on my unraid?

clear ferry
#

Sure

#

Docker is docker for the most part, I don't know unraid though

late gate
#

yeah same thing. primary using it for my NAS with docker plex, sonarr etc, but not sure if I want to run the smarthome on the nas

#

as default

clear ferry
#

It doesn't care if it is running on a Linux MacBook or a Superdome flex as a VMware instance

late gate
#

@clear ferry on a non related issue. on vmware, can you with a regular nvidia card split GPU to multiple VM instead of having to hardware pass the whole thing to one VM?

clear ferry
#

Not that I know of, that is a feature of grid, and similar cards

#

And requires enterprise plus licensing

hushed basalt
#

I wouldn't give plex a card

#

Transcoding is the devil

clear ferry
#

I'm just waiting for it to be supported on freenas, then I'll move my old desktop GPU there

hushed basalt
#

I'm thinking of turning my desktop into a server

#

And change to my laptop as primary

#

Doesn't look like I'll be taking the laptop out of the home for a while

clear ferry
#

I've done the second part

late gate
#

@hushed basalt Im dedicating the cpu gpu to plex transcoding as of now through docker - works well

hushed basalt
#

I think it's a good solution to the wrong problem

#

I never transcode anything

late gate
#

I hardly transcode though

hushed basalt
#

It makes everything look like poo

late gate
#

yeah I never run plex externally or on the phone so no real need to transcode

hushed basalt
#

I share my plex to my mum without transcoding

late gate
#

or need for subtitles, that enable transcoding

hushed basalt
#

Nah it doesn't

late gate
#

oh I though it burn them in

hushed basalt
#

Plex were always shit with subtitles. They're still not great

#

But they've got better

#

Normal subs shouldn't burn in. Plex are just lazy and don't care about accessibility

#

So they just made them burn in rather than figuring out how to stream text

late gate
#

I just find it sad plex is just ignoring the customers

hushed basalt
#

But i watch subtitles on everything

late gate
#

if emby just made the UI as nice as plex on appletv and shield I would change

hushed basalt
#

I have only been using plex frontend for a year now

#

Used to use infuse or openPHT

#

Plex app still isn't very good but it's inbuilt on my tv and saves running a apple TV

late gate
#

its still the best UI and WAF

hushed basalt
#

Infuse on appletv is better

late gate
#

yes I guess that can sync plex too now

#

not used influx for about a year

#

cause of direct play

hushed basalt
#

Yeah it's only single account but it's really sleek

late gate
#

regardless for what its worth I just wish plex started to communicate and start listening

#

like the unwatched does not update, so you have to change filter to update it. A bug that has been reported for a year unfixed

hushed basalt
#

Hehe

#

They really just don't care

Bad product managers or something my guess

@last plaza one day i will get on @tidal bronze 's level
@dull chasm I don’t know if I want to go DOWN to that level 😝

@last plaza I did watch knives out. Interesting. 😄

rain swift

well the one they have is 1.75, i'd kinda like a little more, like the 3.5x lense from that headband one I'm sending back was nice. I seen a few on amazon. but some people were saying they weren't really 4x, crooks lol.

gaunt pawn
#

Wohoo! Installed HA this morning, got a Z-Wave USB stick and a Fibaro motion detector, and just now I successfully tested my first automation. I can see how this can get addicting 🙂

clear ferry
#

@gaunt pawn wait until you have 150+ devices

rain swift
#

i'd love to know what you have, that equals 150+

#

not sayin' I don't believe you, I'm just curious lol.

gaunt pawn

Yeah, my wallet is not happy. I've already collected Hue lights for years, but now I'm expanding. Next up is impulse switch for garage door and possibly window screen control.

clever mortar

I've got about 70 between Zigbee and Z-Wave, and I've barely started

rain swift
#

@gaunt pawn look into cheap chinese stuff you can throw tasmota on lol

#

@clever mortar you have barely started?

clever mortar

I've only made one room actually smart-ish

rain swift

@rain swift I'm getting close to 80 ZigBee, 10 WiFi, 15 433, and playstation, appletv, two heatpumps, some amplifiers, some smart speakers, some DIY esp lights and all the devices I monitor on the network, so probably in the 150 range I guess

rain swift
#

nice

clear ferry
#

When my greenhouse will be done that'll be probably 30 devices just in there

tidal bronze
#

I am yet to add up total devices in the house 🙂

rain swift
#

what are you using for your bed occupation?

clever mortar
#

I only really have a number for Zigbee and Z-Wave, everything else is stuff

tidal bronze
#

Yep. Stuff not calculated here as well.

rain swift
#

stuff, hahaha

clever mortar
#

TVs, smart media players, Google Homes, TVs, etc etc etc etc etc

tidal bronze
#

I think about 140 zwave, 40 zigbee, 95+ esp

rain swift
#

pow

#

I wanna see quad's setup

tidal bronze
#

🙂

#

I wanna see quad's setup
@rain swift when you keep on adding devices for 10 years honestly it's not much

gaunt pawn
#

My excuse for starting with HA was that I had an old Intel NUC on my desk. It was already running Ubuntu server and Docker, so I wanted to see how much work it would be to set up a container with HA. As it turns out, not much work at all. Now I have a new use for my old NUC and something to do while at home due to reduced hours at work. 🙂

tidal bronze
#

@clever mortar why only one room?

clever mortar
#

Well, I've made two others partially smart, but it's been a case of electrician required

tidal bronze
#

Oh

clever mortar
#

I need to get neutrals run, and that requires negotiating with the better half

#

Also, if I'm gonna do that, I want to run in network cables, which requires a bit more negotiation 😄

tidal bronze
#

lol.

clever mortar
#

So, mostly it's sensors so far, but "just" that makes a massive difference

tidal bronze
#

GE/Jasco is coming up with no-neutral stuff but if you need cat might as well.

clever mortar
#

Well, I could try those, but at 240V I'm pretty sure they'll fail spectacularly 😄

tidal bronze
#

Yes with dimmers

clever mortar
#

I could put in dimmers rather than switches, but that only works for lights, and some of the things I'd want to wire up are extractor fans

#

Still, if I'd done this 12+ months ago I'd have gone Z-Wave, now I have Zigbee and can do it cheaper 😄

tidal bronze
#

Unfortunately, all mini modules need the neutral as well for extractor fans.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, and I have one light that's connected to three switches, so I'd want to only buy one smart bit, which means it needs fitted in the loft

tidal bronze
#

I am yet to checkout zigbee dimmers/switches, all zigbee stuff here are sensors. I really like the range.

#

You mean a 3-way switch?

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I've got a few Zigbee sockets, and a Zigbee light strip - generally speaking it's faster and more stable than my Z-Wave

#

Yeah, not enough sleep 😄

tidal bronze
#

3 way is pretty easy on zwave since remotes are just low voltage triggers.

clever mortar
#

Well, I'd want to wire the switch setup to the module, and then the module to the light(s). That way nothing else has to change 😄

#

Do-able, but means I want a sparky who's clued-up on home automation

tidal bronze
#

They detect the voltage differential between the neutral and traveler. You will not have to change much. But then again you don't have neutral 🙂

clever mortar
#

Lack of neutral is ... annoying

tidal bronze
#

Is it normal for UK?

clever mortar
#

Sadly, yes

tidal bronze
#

That's a bummer

#

So they loop the neutral at the lights and run live only to switch?

#

Just like the old days here in the US

clever mortar
#

Yeah, the loop to the switch is live

#

It's cheap, and annoying

tidal bronze
#

Are the new building codes any different ?

clever mortar
#

Nope

#

Hey, they've only very recently decided that new houses should be built with fibre for internet instead of copper

tidal bronze
#

So only not so costly option is go for bulbs, I guess

clever mortar
#

Eh, I dislike that since it breaks POLA

#

I'd rather do it right, so that switches work as switches

tidal bronze
#

I agree. I could never do the bulb thing.

#

I have a few patio/garden RGBW lights that are wifi even those terminate at zwave switches 🙂

amber bramble
#

i have yet to find any zigbee dimmers/switches

last plaza
#

I tried to put xiaomi sensor in my post box. It is way too far from home I need to run wires and go with the DIY approach.

late gate
#

@amber bramble it exist several in wall zigbee dimmers at least of the same type as the zwave fibaro ones

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza no repeater nodes out in the front?

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze closest is 50ft away I have two - front yard and driveway motion sensor.

#

More than 50ft I think

amber bramble
#

i put a zwave door sensor in my mailbox

last plaza
#

I guess I could waste a put a few more sensors in the spirit of mesh networking.

amber bramble
#

technically the zwave part is outside the mailbox i guess, attached the radio part to the post under the mailbox and ran wires in to the contact sensor

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza any plug-in devices?

late gate
#

I put a hue motion sensor in my mailbox instead of door sensor - works very well too and great range since I have hue outdoor lights

last plaza
#

None. No zigbee plug-in devices.

tidal bronze
#

Try a plug-in before running wires

last plaza
#

@late gate thanks for the folding@home link. I may install the software on a few devices at home and start contributing.

late gate
#

@last plaza its a hassio addon for it too

last plaza

Is there a good plug-in that works well with xiaomi Aqara?

#

@late gate unfortunately I am not a hassio user 🤣

#

I guess that more of a fortunate thing 😊

late gate

ah. well the client software is a breeze to install anyways on computers

sour escarp

Well, people need to get things

orchid rose

sour escarp

I had to go out today for a few things too but try to keep it to one grocery shop every 2-3 weeks.

sour escarp

Ireland has gone into lockdown, but the guards can't officially until there's a law rushed through. So this morning I made a quick run to a storage unit I have to see if a cable I needed was out in the big pile of cables stored there. Success!

On the way I drove past some supermarkets where there were ridiculous queues. Coming out of the Industrial Estate where the storage unit it, I stopped at petrol station/shop just to fill up as it looked quiet. It was very quiet! Wandered in, got all my essentials like Bread, Milk, some fresh meat and there was only one other person in the shop 🙂

Oh, the queues outside the supermarkets are insane here. But they're moving damn fast. Well, if you don't turn up at rush hour 😄

@strange vapor i would use keystone patch panels 100%

strange vapor
#

One of the delays today? None of the trip switches are labelled. Going to have to go through the lot and document what's hooked up to what 😦

#

@hushed basalt Yup, have a load of them ready.

hushed basalt
#

Removable is so worth it

last plaza
#

for most home use, thats an overkill

strange vapor
#

Annoyingly, all the the wall plates I have are keystone. The two patch panels aren't

last plaza
#

if you are using in data centers, or labs, it makes sense

clear ferry
#

I installed patch panels at my parents house in 2004, when we got FTTH, still in use and operating nicely

strange vapor
#

Don't mine too much, I normally found the wall panels more awkward to do right.

hushed basalt
#

It's not hard to fill a patch panel at home

last plaza
#

who the fuck has time to put patch panels at home? as long as I have right size cable, all tucked in, I'm in business

hushed basalt
#

Wtf gify

clear ferry
#

Patch panels are so handy

hushed basalt
#

I didn't post that

#

Oh well

last plaza
#

Patch panels are so handy
@clear ferry yes, they are if you are in a SMB

hushed basalt
#

Maybe it'll prompt atxbyea to dance for us

#

Hell no. How else will you terminate 12-20 ethernet runs

strange vapor
#

A friend at the old job did a new build house a few years ago. Every room got ethernet and fibre, and there was speakers put in the ceiling all acrount the house. All wired back to a handy little cubby room where there was a nice build in 52U rack. Such a nice job

clear ferry
#

We had 20 Ethernet runs in our house and a switch upstairs in the attic, panel was a lot easier

last plaza
#

Even building a custom house with the way you want in the US can get extremely expensive, and the builders don't support eveything you want 🤢

clear ferry
#

And the FTTH was terminated there, with the router

last plaza
#

the wiring plans for even the most expensive houses is full of crap

strange vapor
#

@last plaza In Sal's case, his family were the builders, and he has a cousin who does DC cabling.

hushed basalt
#

I'd run fibre to a study..not sure about anywhere else though

#

Netflix won't need 10gbe for a while

clever mortar
#

You can get 10Gb over CAT6... not sure why you'd need fibre

hushed basalt
#

Because it's easier

clever mortar
#

It's pretty though 😄

hushed basalt
#

10gb over cat6 is sketchy. Very little margin for error

last plaza
#

@strange vapor we were looking to build a custom house last year, I dropped the plan because nothing they do is custom - custom in their mind is flooring and tiles and other stupid stuff - nothing that matters

hushed basalt
#

And fibre patch cables are dirt cheap even at long lengths

#

And the sfp modules are cheaper

strange vapor
#

@last plaza My sister went through two builders before she found one who'd actually build what she wanted rather than what they wanted to build.

last plaza
#

the builders offered a "smarthome" package, and when I looked at it, it is full of shit. and they want me to pay $300 a month for managing their stupid package

strange vapor
#

The one she ended up with was really good.

last plaza
#

@strange vapor Is she in the USA?

strange vapor
#

No, Ireland.

forest edge
#

whoa first infant death of covid in chicago

strange vapor
#

Whre the house are proper concrete 🙂 No wood frame etc.

last plaza
#

I see... I cant believe so many of my friends still pay $200 for home security because they watched the ad on TV and signed up

hushed basalt
#

Wood frame has pros and cons

#

Everything here is brick/block walls

#

And it's so dumb. Brick veneer is dumb dumb dumb dumb here

strange vapor
#

The biggest problem she had? The site is fairly boggy, which was known. However, the exact part of the site they wanted to build on was, em, more boggy than expected.

last plaza
#

I lived in both concrete houses and wood houses - prefer wooden houses as you can change without making too much mess

hushed basalt
#

No one here lives in concrete houses

#

Only commercial buildings would have concrete walls

strange vapor
#

When the first digger came in, he went down over 7m and never hit rock. Moving the house 30m back further from the road, and bedrock was only 70cm down 😄

last plaza
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

My mums house is built on ex sand dunes

#

Beach Sand for days

#

In my climate, best option is a reverse brick veneer, with external insulation under a lightweight bright cladding

#

But i would say only 1 in 50 000 houses are build like that

#

And far out of my price range

last plaza
#

I am keeping track on items that sold quickly in case of pandemic, and every day I am adding more and more items as I go thru...

#

today I was looking to replace refrigerator water filter, and surprisingly they are ALL out of stock... go figure!

strange vapor
#

@last plaza There was panic buying here, and two days later all the shelves were stocked again.

last plaza
#

People are really really panic I can see... anything to do with health, safety...etc are out of stock

hushed basalt
#

We don't need anything except fresh fruit and vegetables

#

But i don't want to go out just for that

strange vapor
#

The same people haven't learned. A Lock In announced in Ireland last night, and queues at the supermarkets again.

last plaza
#

we got food back on the shelves, but some of the items takes time to manufacture and distribute...

strange vapor
#

Hilariously, I could go around the corner to a smaller store and get everything I needed in minutes

last plaza
#

I am not in a hurry to buy a filter, but surprising that people panic on such stuff

hushed basalt
#

It's not necessarily panick

#

Just needs to be significantly higher demand than normal

last plaza
#

trust me, you haven't seen the folks here

hushed basalt
#

True

last plaza
#

I've seen folks with crazy masks and costumes in stores trying fill shopping carts, running across isles

hushed basalt
#

But a lot of them are probably just the same as you and wanted a filter on hand in case you couldn't get one when you need it

strange vapor
#

@last plaza What country are you in?

last plaza
#

if you just look at them, you feel like you are in a Hollywood movie, where the world is coming to an end in the next 5 minutes

#

@strange vapor freedom country as atx calls it

#

USA

forest edge
#

it's only going to get worse

strange vapor
#

Ah!

hushed basalt
#

A lot of production lines are maxed out

#

And they can't expand capacity without decade long investments

last plaza
#

I buy 2 filters that last one year.... every spring time I get a reminder to order filters... they are cheap and abundant, surprisingly all of out

hushed basalt
#

Which they won't need when demand dies down

last plaza
#

transportation in the US is mostly Trucks... and all those trucks are busy with essentials, and they are not moving other non-essentials to stores and warehouses

#

but the existing stock quickly disappears as people panic and buy more

forest edge
#

may wanna join them lol

#

good chunk of these researchers who are tracking the virus mutations say covid-20 is around the corner

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt A lot of businesses here are turning their facilities over to what's needed. O'Neills have gone from making sports kit to scrubs and are seemingly doing a really good job. There's a business park near me which has always been full of labs for everything from testing sample from cattle for TB to Quality control which are all being turned over to testing Covid samples.

last plaza
#

all the stores are asking folks to sit in their own cars in the parking lot with ticket system - watching live news

#

@forest edge covid 19 is not yet over, covid 20 is on the rise already?

#

expect more WFH them 😛

forest edge
#

not here yet, but the vvirus is mutating

strange vapor
#

They've ramped up the testing massively here. On Monday, an elderly relative ended up in hospital with Covid-19 and there wasn't enought tests to test her family. Her grandson was positive by Wednesday. Today, a minibus arrived and they tested all her family who live close by and all her neighbors.

last plaza
#

of course!

forest edge
#

it will only become a "new strain" when it becomes much diffrent than the current form

strange vapor
#

So the test kit bottle neck seems to have cleared somewhat.

#

Admittedly Ireland is small country, but still nice to see the testing ramp up so fast.

last plaza
#

The handyman guy called earlier today telling me that he lost his job, no income or job in the near future! He is an HVAC expert, but worst season for them

#

this next 2 months, we dont use AC or Heating

strange vapor
#

Lots of people around me who've been temporarily laid off 😦

last plaza
#

spring time here is the best weather, but worst time if you are a HVAC contractor and lost your job.

forest edge
#

lucky you don't have allergies lol

hushed basalt
#

A lot of my friends have lost their jobs or their businesses have zero income

last plaza
#

we do... because of the rain, it is low right now

#

these allergies are the worst thing to happen right in the middle of corona

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt does AU havve any plans for that?

hushed basalt
#

Nothing truely meaningful

last plaza
#

Govt. stimulus doesn't reach those unemployed until May it seems... people are already broken

hushed basalt
#

Hand out some cash to small businesses. Quantitive easing to make sure house prices don't go down too much and jump back afterwards

last plaza
#

Lots of folks have kids, no jobs and no savings and lots of debt

clear ferry
#

Norway set ba rule to pay furlowed or unemployed for the first 16 days, then the welfare system kicks in, so they wouldn't have to wait for that

hushed basalt
#

Housing affordability won't improve with all this chaos

last plaza
#

5+ Million people without pay now in the US

forest edge
#

well

clear ferry
#

Ooof

last plaza
#

lowest since 1940s after WWII

strange vapor
#

Ouch 😦

hushed basalt
#

They should have been born into a trust fund

#

It's their own fault

forest edge
#

to be fair, a chunk of that number are asshats hoping this is gonna get them free money

last plaza
#

yup

clear ferry
#

And without health insurance since most get that from their employer right @last plaza ?

last plaza
#

yup.... you lose your job you are fucked in US

hushed basalt
#

Whoever thought tying health care to employment was a good idea

clear ferry
#

Ooof

forest edge
#

course once they apply for unemployment and it's determined thier job status isn't directly caused by covid then they get sent home without a dime lol

last plaza
#

health care costs too much

clear ferry
#

I paid $30 to see the emergency room today, plus the medication for my eye

hushed basalt
#

Private health care is infecting australia piece by piece. but I'm glad we get a lot publically provided

last plaza
#

culture here is not a saving culture - like in other countries... people lavishly spend money when they have it, and then when they lose their job, things are different

forest edge
#

I paid $30 to see the emergency room today, plus the medication for my eye
@clear ferry did the doctor telling you to keep your finger out of it actually sink in this time?

hushed basalt
#

Have been to the childrens hospital like four times this past 14 months. Zero cost

#

Including delivery in a private room

#

Tooth extraction

last plaza
#

I paid $30 to see the emergency room today, plus the medication for my eye
@clear ferry that would be $3000 with insurance here in the US, and $8000 without insurance

hushed basalt
#

Food trials

clear ferry
#

Yeah, kids are free

last plaza
#

imagine that!

clear ferry
#

Even specialists

hushed basalt
#

Would be like $100k in US

clear ferry
#

And dentist

forest edge
#

our healthcare is a godamn joke

hushed basalt
#

Outpatient care is all charged. And it's expensive

#

Specialist charges us like $450 a consult

strange vapor
#

A few years ago my father ended up in hospital with a really bad lung infection, was kept for three weeks. Total cost? €180

hushed basalt
#

I shouldn't use the word free though

trail crag
#

just came back from Costco...on a Saturday...I was expecting to see a line but there wasn't one, so I went ahead and went in. Calmest I've ever seen it. Got my 1 pack of tp and everything else and it was surreal. People were making eye contact and smiling. Wish it was always that way.

hushed basalt
#

We all pay for it

last plaza
#

A buddy of mine at work has saved $100K in HSA (Health Savings Account), and he had treatment to remove kidney stones, all the money is gone

#

no more money for future health care (out of pocket) for him

#

all it takes is one visit or health issue to wipe off all your wealth

hushed basalt
#

BuT wE cAnt AfForD uNivErSal hEalTh cAre

forest edge
#

@trail crag where is this? your neck of the woods not infested yet?

last plaza
#

it is so bad, nobody can fix it... way too many politics and no progress... I guess thats why Congress is the opposite of Progress

strange vapor
hushed basalt
#

Lol

last plaza
#

just came back from Costco...on a Saturday...I was expecting to see a line but there wasn't one, so I went ahead and went in. Calmest I've ever seen it. Got my 1 pack of tp and everything else and it was surreal. People were making eye contact and smiling. Wish it was always that way.
@trail crag wake up.... you are still dreaming!!! 😂

#

I had the exact same dream last night

hushed basalt
#

Costco just opened here last week

#

Would have been crazy I bet

trail crag
#

@forest edge no it was insane the past two weeks. Not sure if this is because of the stay at home order or what...

strange vapor
#

@last plaza I work with a US company, and we have people in the Irish office who bought their whole family over to brave Irish weather because of kids having medical conditions that would bankrupt them in the US but are just dealt with here.

hushed basalt
#

Our first costco during a pandemic

forest edge
#

maybe the nutjobs just needed some time to get the panic out of thier systems lol

hushed basalt
#

America is great if you're wealthy

forest edge
#

atleast till the next bad news

last plaza
#

@strange vapor very common here - folks travel to a different country to get their medical stuff done

#

they can't afford here at all

forest edge
#

america is awesome if your one of the 1% lol

hushed basalt
#

@clear ferry do people have private health insurance there

#

We pay like $6k a year and I'm not sure what I'm really getting from it

#

But the government has a dodgey extra tax if you don't have it

last plaza
#

@forest edge Irony is that even that top 1% want the govt stimulus money

hushed basalt
#

The top 1% receive majority of welfare

#

That's a fact

trail crag
#

This Costco has a nickname.."UN Costco" because of all the nationalities here in the area. But we have a lot of elderly in the area too. There weren't very many of them in the store which is not normal for a Saturday.

forest edge
#

@last plaza don't think they qualify but they were trying to cut out people who were lower-middle class / poor from also being able to qualify for that

hushed basalt
#

Through "subsisdies", tax concessions, public funding of infrastructure, food stamps for employees, state sanctiondd downward pressure on wages, and 1000 other ways

last plaza
#

The congress had to put a "clause" that says the Mr. T wouldn't put his hands into the govt stimulus money for personal use. that;s how bad it is.

trail crag
#

@last plaza he's already signed off on any accountability for that

last plaza
#

now it happened... the clause is part of the bill

#

I'm sure it is happening all over in all other countries to some extent

#

The best way for an average american to find out if they have coronavirus is to cough on a celebrity's face and wait for their test results to come

last plaza
#

we're living in crazy times for sure!

#

good thing we have specific store hours just for elders, so that they can get their essentials - great idea

forest edge
#

I agree with that but it's fiunny cause many of them are horders as well

#

altho many places put a limit on quantities

last plaza
#

yes - stores have the limits now too

#

10,000 people dead in Italy so far. They are digging mass graves and dumping bodies. 😱

#

Families don't even get to see their loved ones or even say good bye....

forest edge
#

they should have issued the stay at home as a nation wide rather than allowing individual states/cities to do it as they saw fit. Kansas just now issued theirs after all this time and that's only because the numbers started to climb out of control and it's too late lol

last plaza
#

most states are waiting for orders from federal govt - instead they could have taken action.... delays are deadly

forest edge
#

our governor here in MO dosen't think the coronavirus is a big deal so we hadn't issued ours yet either but literally every city/county came out and said our governor is an idiot and issued the stay at home on thier own

rose flare
#

hi

forest edge
#

@rose flare welcome to apocalypse chat

rose flare
#

i search the good channel for my question. It's for the bluetooth

#

thx @forest edge

forest edge
rose flare
#

no it's about a bluetooth antenna

forest edge
last plaza
#

My ESP8266s are coming Tuesday... Originally Amazon said they will deliver on April 21... looks like our local warehouse got the stock

rose flare
#

Ok. it's for bluetooth antenna (raspberry ) integration

last plaza
#

Yay!!! more tinkering during downtime

#

@rose flare you can share the problem, and we may be able to help or direct you to correct channel

rose flare
#

ok

forest edge
#

@last plaza don't think they were making enough money only delivering "essential", sure they prioritize those deliveries but they are still able to do normal ones as well. I see crap delievvered aorund here evvery single day lol

#

which reminds me i need to put my shelly order through tonight

last plaza
#

very true! most of the traffic you see are amazon trucks only here

rose flare
#

I'm looking to integrate a bluetooth antenna (raspberry PI 3)

last plaza
rose flare
#

I would like to use the bluetooth of a raspberry from my virtual machine.

#

it's possible ?

hushed basalt
#

I need to buy a soldering iron for home

#

But I'm so time poor I know i won't get time to use it

forest edge
hushed basalt
#

Same with a 3d printer :'(

rose flare
#

ok

last plaza
#

I don't know where to put the 3d printer if I bought it... family complains already that I use all the outlets for crazy devices

forest edge
#

time poor? how during all of this? lol

last plaza
#

lol

forest edge
#

stick it in a closet that way you don't hear the servos while you do other stuff since many prints takes hours upon hours to complete lol

hushed basalt
#

@forest edge kids man

#

They take up all your time

forest edge
#

duct tape and a tv

hushed basalt
#

In some countries they call that child neglect

forest edge
#

here it's called proper parenting

#

I remember when spankings when away

#

everyone was so sensitivve over thier kids getting spanked at school etc

#

nothing like a cherry red ass to get your lesson to sink in

last plaza
#

used to be, but not anymore @forest edge a single 911 call from the child can tear entire family apart...

forest edge
#

oh i dunno if it's quite that bad

last plaza
#

child protection services/agencies and courts, lawyers... there are better ways to encourage kids for better behavior

forest edge
#

they still havve to prove that you were abusing your child etc

last plaza
#

I know of a family, they got separated right after kid called 911, dad got arrested because he slapped the kid, and right after, family went separate ways with child custody and all

#

if the child calls 911, that's all it takes

forest edge
#

well thats a little different. obviously both parents need to be on the same page when it comes to punishment

last plaza
#

"reinforced learning" it works for dogs, it works for humans 🙂

#

it also works for machines - apparently lol

forest edge
#

but if both parents are on same page and the kid called 911 just to be a shit, I would havve faith it wouldn't end up turning on in the kids favor. especially if you were upfront about whooping thier ass for being a shit lol

last plaza
#

even then, if the child feels not safe and calls 911, no matter of the parents are on the same page or not, they are screwed

forest edge
#

well if it's that damn touchy these days our society got issues lol

last plaza
#

recently a teacher got suspended for calling a kid "stupid"
