Yes, your upload is terrible
In though Germany had good interwebs
Just move to Norway, it's a short move for you @hearty depot

Austria/Vienna I'm only from Germany
Would love to @clear ferry got a job for me π€£
@hearty depot easy, we need it people everywhere
grounded for now. My contract is bound for another 1.6 years. But I can take a couple of trainings each year. What you need?
I currently pay $20 USD a month on top of my ISP's monthly plan to double my upstream.... from 5Mbps to 10Mbps........ π
tempting to move outside of the US
Everything everywhere, the market is very open in Norway
why is it soo open?
@north forum how is life in 2000?
@clear ferry , honestly not sure what year this is. I can get 1,000 down, 10 up ....
@brisk glen because everything is booming, cybersecurity, developers, sysadmin etc, just not enough people
I get a lot of offers every year
Lol. On paper I got 40D/10U
Aaah I really hope that will stay this way - I love Norway
Norwat
@brisk glen that's just your LAN speed though :P What's your actual WAN speed?
It stays above 100K, so it's not that cold π
You can get a Pullover, problem fixed
.k2c 100
ok.... @clever mortar sure not cold
Warmer than 0K π
Yeah exactly, your local area network :P what's your WAN/Internet/ISP provided speed?
Inb4 20mb/s xD
@civic tulip only like 90 down and 5 up π
tho I am not home much and Im usually at work
my boss has 4 Gbit to his mac from the core.........
idk how the hell he got them to connect him to the core
more like 4 cables
Like thunderbolt 10Gb
Likely he know folks who owned an ISP
I know somebody else who managed magic like that
Yeah, sure, I have my own ASN, doesn't everybody π±
What on earth is your business lol, like a datacenter or what? What company uses 10gb+ bandwidth
Quite a few...
a college with a public library
10 Gb and above Internet links aren't that uncommon
I've dealt with one that had dual 32 Gb links
Good luck!
the migration has already started
I mean, as long as you don't lose connectivity to the Internet it'll likely be fine...
Oslo looks fine to me
might be a tad too cold for my wife
A bit dry
Pretty sure I have a customer with a 50Gbit plus internet link, might even be close to 100Gbit
heh
I love that Azure runs on linux
Right? They should be forced to run the whole of azure in hyperv lol
Very few of my customers run anything more than AD in azure
Even the hyper v minority
We have a bit of Azure, a bit of AWS, but 95% GCP. Tbf works extremely well
as they should
We're dropping all local DCs since we're not using any VPNs into the cloud. Has presented some challenges lol
But then again, a lot of my customers aren't even online
Strange concept today, not being online at all
Not really... just less common
Not really, considering the businesses and today's internet either
Four hackers have been charged for the equifax data breach, Philips Hues could be used to hack your network, and changing screen brightness to steal data! All that coming up now on ThreatWire. #threatwire #hak5

So, Den Automation may be about to rise from the dead - which is only of interest to others in the UK I'm sure
https://denswitches.com/

never heard of them in the US
although I am waiting for someone to buy Leeo - they filed bankruptcy recently (maybe it is too late now)
hak5 lol
Some lady at Hy-Vee was trying to tell people at the girl scout stand the cookies were made in China lol
@brisk glen this is more of a #the-water-cooler conversation... is AdGuard Home runs entirely local?
never used it - I don't mind looking into it if it is any better than PiHole
Itβs like pihole
ok...
Yah, itβs a little better
none of the additional stuff adguard does really matters, and I tried to run dnscrypt on my firewall and the servers were always going down
so I ended up going back to good ol google
the extra stuff they claim you need I didn't I just installed it on ubuntu server with one command
I like what I am seeing there!
I mean i'm all about competition though lol
I run pihole in a vm so no biggy to fire up a new vm and try something else out
I use quad 9
netgate sg-3100
this will be another weekend project... I can't afford to break anything on Sunday night!
aka pfsense
yeah, I'm gonna try to pre config the new firewall and do a quick swapout lol
I use Palo Alto firewall, pretty damn advanced in its capabilities, but extreely complex to navigate the admin dashboard
I just want a nice easy to use GUI lol
my openbsd firewall has served me for 5 years
pfsense is good, I block about 140K domains and my home network is pretty clean mostly - although cloudfront makes it difficult at times
Dns over port 443
Unable to parse the request
My ISP probably hates me
i'm blocking 125,337 domains
and yeah, home network is pretty clean
I run ublock origin and stuff too
not bad! you can tell the difference on many sites with pi-hole and without pihole
big time
A big difference
I can't stand surfing the net "bare back"
its like holy crap how can anyone stand this
It even blocks my wifeβs pandora ads on her phone at home
I love going to those sites to watch a movie streaming and watching all their crap not working
no way - we went to a friend's place a few weeks ago for the weekend, our kids opened their iPad searched online and it opened 150 tabs in their browser
yeah my wife was asking me about something the other day, I was like, if pihole is blocking it, it didn't need to be opened lol
they really have no clue how clean our home network is... as soon as they step outside, it is ugly out there
Lol
yeah thats pihole for me
I forgot about it
I got a dual boot Ubuntu and Windows on my personal laptop - other than that, everything else is linux based - except windows 2016 server where @velvet horizon is running
I go in and do ubuntu updates now and then
Idk why but pihole keeps fucking up for me
weird
Takes or a week
it is so easy to troubleshoot
I have 0 issues with it
I know but I really like adguard home now
they are pretty similar in many aspects, you're good!
once something is cached and I do a dig query time is 0ms
yup
does adguard use unbound?
I was running all that crap on my firewall by hand, thats why now I want everything to be easy button lol
dnsmasq, unbound, dnscrypt, openvpn, whyy
interesting
what do you run your pfsense on?
hardware I bought off amazon lol
Thatβs how they can claim itβs portable
I slapped it together old school
do you pay or just use the community edition?
it literally only gets rebooted when I do openbsd updates
I touch it so rarely I forget how to do stuff half the time lol
aww yeah
a bunch of my co-workers use netgate hw, they spent like $250 on them
isn't there a service or something for patching the kernel without rebooting
Yah, but Iβm not using a normal server
Apt is not even installed
Ubuntu Core is Ubuntu for embedded environments, optimised for security and reliable updates. Run snaps in a high-security confined sandbox with bulletproof upgrades.
when the pihole pi died I had to set up the vm, install ubuntu, set everything up at like midnight lol
what other hardwares can you run ubuntu core?
I have a battery backup for all my servers anyway
You can compile it for any hardware
even some of the RPIs as long as they are close to my UPS proximity wise
Are industrial places moving away from ladder logic PLCs to something a bit more mainstream?
yup - my network modem, routers, firewall, switches are all on UPS. sometimes we lose power for a quick second/minute, and my network is uninterrupted!
I keep all the network gear on UPS
if we lose power for longer period because of heavy snow or something, that's a while another issue
my UPS sends me an alert when they lose wall power
I have everything on a UPS at home
I use HA for it π
yeah I'll go in and start shutting stuff down to save power
you could initiate shutdown with HA
I just wanted my DNS server to be on something I never touch
I should set that up
I could
not hard to have it send winders a shutdown command lol
Lol
Networked UPS works well
yup
my list of things to implement keeps getting longer.
lol
Every server should tap into the networked UPS and shut itself down
I need bigger.... networked UPS systems
my ups is USB
Everything is usb for now
And then that shares it on the network
the UPS's connect to the BI machine because I don't have any nut server or whatever
Obviously something core or low power
thats another thing I want to set up
Zero
got a few of those
Ew
Lol
dunno if my UPS's will talk to nut or whatever though
Just want an ethernet, a usb port and a debian based OS
I bought 10 Pi Zeros when they were on sale for $0.99c, and never used one of them!
ha
50% off something you don't need is 100% waste of money :D
Now don't look in my garage
well said!
Lol
when you buy something thinking i'll probably use that
its such a good deal I have to buy it
Then you also need to buy storage to storage and organise all that stuff
I need a 10 bay nas :p
Then you need to buy real estate to store all that storage
For home use
I want an ixsystems nas
I need to declutter like crazy
I have been lookin for one! I just missed a deal, I'm so mad!
that has zfs
It was a synology, only 5 bay
you don't already have a synology michael?
a nas I also don't have to touch, just set it up and swap out drives when they die
NAS is a best investment! you can do so many things with it
If your UPS has a usb A port you can even power the old Pi off it
so many tabs of things to read
Synology is very simple and straight forward, but you may outgrow it for a home server
I just started using the chrome tab sync stuff so I can get to everything i'm looking at from everywhere, why wasn't I doing this sooner.
I love that the NAS either synology or qnap all have container station - you could run many things in containers in there - you don't need any additional server hardware
My synology has screwed me over a few times. Can't free up port 80/433, can't setup passwordless sudo without risking bricking it,
I need to learn more about containers
lol
they seem so awesome
Also synology has like years between docker version upgrades
I didn't use containers until I got into forbidden topic
prebuilt nas's these days are too over priced
they have a proprietary container implementation
even the kits you can buy are over priced cause nas is a "trend" lol
the cloud is just someone else's computer.
yup
Building a desktop PC as a nas isn't exactly cheap either
we need a forbidden topic type deal that you just install and it turns a bunch of drives into a nas
You guys would hate the term serverless then
cheaper than prebuilt and with better hardware
or just a nas addon lol
again, NAS is one of my best investments - the trick is finding right HDD with right sizing, and after that, you are set for a very long time!
@rain swift serverbuilds.net have some good builds if you don't mind high power consumption
you could build NAS with SSDs, that will cost you a fortune, but supr fast!
solid states in nas always seem silly to me
I don't love hgh power consumption if I can help it lol
Linuxserver.io discord have some blog articles too. Perfect media server 2017 etc
SSD in a nas is for vm's and stuff
I guess thats more of a storage array
it all blurrs together
Just beware that cheap ssds are like TLC which means they're quite slow and wear out easily
I wish I have GPUs on my Poweredge Servers - that's the only thing I miss today
After the SLC cache layer is depleted
But depending on your use case you may never see it depleted
Not all solid state storage is created equally
you like how newer ssd's are less reliable than the first generations? lol
I always find it a hoot
Selected the appropriate equipment for the job is just part of design
@last plaza you will not miss GPU with 1019+ π
I know, I missed that deal though, I am still mad!
I know situations where a flash cache served with 10gbe would totally change their world
1019+?
Will come around. Add 2 x nvme as well and you are ready to rock.
I might just go buy it. it is only like $100 difference!
let me know next time you find the deal... I'd jump on it
Will keep an eye for sure.
@hushed basalt 1019+ is the synology NAS that was on sale earlier this week
No.
It is a 5 by instead of typical 4 bay
Hmm. I think the age of 1gbe has passed for anything I buy
what was it on sale for?
good cpu and memory, and if you add SSDs, you are set!
But link agg is more than enough for home use
5 bays is nice though. 3+2 SHR2
$575 something
yesh
2gig load balanced and plenty.
I can't bring myself to spend that much on a nas.. just cannot do it lol
@tidal bronze for a lot of people it is. But now that flash storage in NASs and flash storage in desktops is becoming norm, that 10gbe interlink can really make that shared drive feel more local
Obviously for serving to plex it's irrelevant
although if I buy another QNAP, I can sync between qnaps easily.. otherwise I may have to use scheduled jobs to sync
But for serving network drives to desktops it makes a big difference
I do have a 12TB SSD Nas π
10GB is pointless ATM fro home use.
the next one will be a big one for me for sure!
my idea of a good nas. lol https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9f/IBM_System_360_tape_drives.jpg
Link aggregation is maybe 200MB/s if you're lucky?
Unless 5 people are watching UHD 4:4:4 with truhd audio lol
we only have 3 TVs, 50 people can watch but only 3 streams max π
mobiles don't count
220 is plenty.
Nvme is in the 1000s of MB/s
Only reason to have a 10G network ATM is if you are editing 4k 8k video on NAS. I think that's a very few on the planet
You don't have to be editing online to want that extra speed
I do have a 10g subnet at home but trust me not worth the hype.
Writing and then checksumming back on even a days worth of Blackmagic RAW during offload would make it very handy
nothing would even utilize it
exactly
my dell poweredge has 8 drive slots - currently I only have 2 HDDs in there. I can hydrate that and use that as a NAS as well
I already run esxi on it, having extra disk drives would be easy to set up NAS in there
you are set with that @last plaza
rpi4 cluster nas would be neat
Just get like 8 poweredges and set up ceph. Will be super simple barely an inconvenience
portability is the question @tidal bronze
I can take NAS with me, but I can't take my server with me π
With you where?
backpacking the nas
Hiking
Once you add the 1019+ for plex you will be golden @last plaza π
in case of fire, I can grab it and run out side π
Eh id just have onsite and offsite backup and let it burn
It was too late by the time I found the deal. next time I am not wasting a second!
hmm that be a hard choice, i'd take the drives and leave the nas then havve the insurance upgrade me
I could buy retail price, I'm not in a hurry, and I'd rather use the difference for tax and on SSDs
I hate that B&H and Amazon are collecting tax these days π
@last plaza if you want you can sync encrypted to one my syno units and I can do the same with yours, critical shares. I have 1 syncing to a buddy in San Francisco and 1 in Long Island. π
The size of stuff I actually care about isn't that big. Maybe 1TB
Everything else is just linux ISOs, no need to back them up
@tidal bronze that's a great idea - DR across Murrica! π
@tidal bronze lol why? what spy like data you be sharing?
Yep and free :_)
lol - love the idea - we should start a group across the globe
I did that when I had a NAS set up at my mums house
Replication with Dedpue runs like butter
None of my friends have servers
I need to get my brother to buy a NAS in UK, I'm all set! π
They just all watch netflix and OTA like plebs
I'd always think the FBI would be showing up at any minute lol
Or they put everything on usb hdds and plug it into their playstations
Best thing with syno is 2 click setup and forget. π You can even test failover
@forest edge what do you do to get FBI's attention? π
Unreturned library books
lmao
lol
if your cross sharing with other people, it's not your stuff you would be concerned about lol
it is all happening over SSL, and I sincerely hope they can't see data in transit
Too much noise
Current replication π
I have no doubt they can backdoor targeted people. And they dragnet anything that is hosted by tech companies
Eh
well, it is beyond what we can do
I don't think FBI is going to raid my nzbget server
@tidal bronze Server A is yours and B and C are friend's?
Yes
awesome!
What's recovery like
make sure they are far away from California π
1 click mount or recovery.
he keeps the Server B keys in server A and C, and vice versa
You don't want a , key locked in the safe scenario
the key management is always a nightmare! we have vaults and vaults, and still confused on who gets the keys to the vaults
1 of them is a 8TB photo share, which I seeded and shipped.
why don't you just upload everything to internet and let internet takes backups for you for free? π
that's alot of dog pics
I have loads of 4k material from shoots B-roll
lol - I make backups in multiple HDDs and keep them in bank safes
I do that too better to have it than be sorry.
like safe deposit - not kidding. I also have fire/flood safes at home
I keep multiple copies rotated every 6 months
you two are going outside the normal scope of the people in this channel lol
About 10 years ago I lost 4 drives, and that was it.
lmao - when you have kids and so many memories, you have to protect them and give it to your kids when they are grown up
About 10 years ago I lost 4 drives, and that was it.
yup - this is what worries me!!!
yea i think google photo will still be around lol
I have some on goog but I can handle my backups
I actually thought of buying a NAS and keeping it remotely in brother's house and manage it remotely
That's a great idea too
Google photos compresses like shit
yup - you also give them readonly access for certain folder and admin console
I lost the originals from my honeymoon
build a small underground enclosure 20ft from the house and bury a power and ethernet cable to it and stick a nas in that lol
They're on google photos but it's garbage
I'm sure there is way to restore original uploads
The google unlimited is good. I am planning on moving plex storage to that with rclone encrypted. Not spend money to store this media crap.
get an AWS snowball
Yeah my old work backs up 48TB to google unlimited
best way to transport lots of data at once! I wish I thought of that idea!
plex works great with rclone and encrypted. So yep @hushed basalt
Even glacier adds up quick if you have to retrieve anything
I am currently syncing about 16TB to gdrive. I don't care if they are lost one day just plex stuff
ah! how much for gdrive?
10/month
not bad!
That's ingressive... but I egress
I use B2. I only have about $2.5 of stuff I care about
lol
*peers about as if looking for someone *
If i had more I'd go to Google unlimited
strangers be listening to your bank vaults and cross country data sharing.. almost like being caught naked
Or get edu email and it's free lol
think of it as $120 a year as an insurance for your priceless memories!
well I am a stranger that just wandered in here looking for help with this here M5Sick-C I got myself...
@tidal bronze edu emails are completely hacked by chinese government - just an fyi
?
@ashen minnow I think I referred you to go to #diy-archived
@last plaza I love google but backups I want to have full control. Nothing critical/important goes on cloud storage for me.
speaking of chinese hackers.. that whole thing has had to have slowed down with everything going on
Even encrypted at source like rclone
10 word or less challenge - what firmware and control for M5stick-c as universal remote
@ashen minnow 2 words, "not sure"!
@last plaza "same here"
that is not a popular hardware among the people here, if someone knows, they will jump to answer
Its an amazing thing
@last plaza off topic but have you looked into queuing TTS?
@tidal bronze unless you use kafka or something, the mqtt doesn't support queueing
My dream is - to use it as an I remote to automate old IR devices
like my TV hehe - I want it to wake me up by switching to the news channel
@last plaza not MQTT lol, TTS
There's a dozen devices that are cheap and do that easily
@ashen minnow please use #diy-archived
Why make it hard for yourself
I have an m5 stick lol
Just get a broadlink rm3
I am Irish and a lapsed catholic
@ashen minnow are you listening? #diy-archived
ok cool braodlink? never heard of it
@tidal bronze I have setup kafka locally
ya but I didnt hear from anyone - and you guys looked like you were having fun
and I wanted to join in π
wtf not even the coronavirus slows those bastards down they just use it to create more phishing scams lmao
will try it out, an you can run it in docker with easy steps and will be able to use queueing
I do feel like the topics are a bit too splintered tbh
There's a balance between too few and too many
@last plaza so garage opened/ medicine reminder fired at the same time will get played one after the other ?
But a lot of stuff ends up in #330944238910963714 even though that's just for installing homeassistant /hassio
@hushed basalt perfect advice thanks you π
@tidal bronze yes
Advice?
Outstanding
biggest difference between mqtt and kafka is that MQTT overrides old values in a given topic, whereas kafka queues them, - you can go back and play all of them if you want
@hushed basalt The Broadlink Smart Home Hub - didn't know it existed - thought I would have to homebrew it
you can setup kafka and zookeeper locally in docker
It's rare to need to diy stuff nowadays
Custom flashing sure, but soldering irons aren't needed as much anymore
I used to be a believer in DIY years ago, but not anymore. there are so many off the shelf products, no need to do DIY in the automation space anymore
Indeed
there are so many OEM products out there that does everything you need
Although I worry that a lot of manufacturers are making their stuff locked down with certs
Can't mitm as much anymore
Yup - but I often end up buying the junk - or going overboard with the solution
the DIY is good for kids in school to learn about stuff but no need for practical use
DIY is for novel stuff. But nothing of what we do is novel.
Controlling lights, doors, TTS, tvs, that's all standard nowadays
yup
We're getting to ride the wave of mainstream automation
Haha in my case - I shouold prob buy a new TV that I can more easily control
Then hacking it to our benefit
I just hate throwing away a perfectly nice screen - or just giving away
Controlling source, volume etc is easy enough with a IR blaster
But deeper integration is nice
yup I did it before with an arduino by recording the codes
I recommend LG. WebOS is nice
but I thought there may be something else by now haha and there is
@ashen minnow just connect a RPi to your TV and you are all set
use the screen as you want
It's a dumb tv - so all brightness etc are all done by IR - my arduino version ran thru the menus
it was the lack of an RTC that failed it
DIY will always have a place with HA if you want to do things out of the norm and not be stuck to what's on the shelf. But as for motion sensors etc, right now cheaper to buy stuff like zigbee. Buy the time you put stuff together it's usually little more than retail. But if you take WLED for instance, there's nothing in the market unless commercial stuff that can even come close to the functionality it offers.
@tidal bronze are you looking to queue TTS messages?
yes
i need to try wled ....pixelstick is what i am using now
@dull chasm individually addressable LEDs?
time to switch. WLED is miles ahead of stick and still supports DMX π
@last plaza Is right I should be in the diy chan - thanks all for the help π
unicast?
I bought a set, but have been sitting on my desk collecting dust... I need to hook them up
cool......if i can get wife to stop smoking esp's ....she loves soldering connectors and doesnt always pay attention to where wire goes instead of its color
lol
best part is multi-segment in the same strip or length. Displays as separate lights in HA. Can run all individual effects color pallets in segments. But single strip π What more can you ask.
awesome ....putting leds underbed for latenate tv watching or pee time π€£
that's a great idea! I need to do for our master bathroom - right now, we have motion sensor lights that turns on full brightness
Example sides vertical effect, top bottom android
master bath has too many lights, and when you get up middle of the night for bathroom break, those lights are too harsh! π
i will put one under bed motion just for them ...so when in sleep mode they trigger them
@tidal bronze show off
@tidal bronze you don't need a fireplace in LA! come on!!!
we are the ones who freeze our asses here
38 where i live last 2 months
fake one at that π€£
thats proll c @last plaza
@dull chasm sorry we don't do that wood burning stuff. Natural gas and remote fired, it's 2020 π
hey hey ......whats wrong with that
we have the fake wood fire place but runs on gas
I am a sucker for fireplaces, since I don't like forced air heat, That's what I use in the master bedroom as well.
wow! I haven;t seen that in a very long time!
we have forced air and air condition... we are used to it. we do have personal heaters if needed!
AC I am fine with. But heat gives me headache.
@dull chasm you burn wood in there?
@tidal bronze as long as you maintain humidity, we're usually fine.
yea ...i dont have one now but have had recentyly
@dull chasm did you put temp sensor in there?
no
@last plaza it's dry here as you know. So force heat is very irritating.
Fireplace makes it so cozy.
that's why you need a humidifier with heat
Humidity and I will run.
our kids will have nose bleeds if it is too dry and heat is on
I am just using directly - pass a text to notify method, that uses polly
instead, we could drop a message in kafka, and have a kafka listener process the message.
kafka support has been added lately, but I haven't checked it in detail
Got it.
the current kafka implementation is limited to history only. π¦
Mom's med reminders and door alerts for the nurse fires at the same time, sometimes, so need to figure out a way to store and play them
I see. another work around would be to use an input_text π
basically what you do is, add the message to input_text, only if it is empty. and on input_text change event, call TTS notify method, after TTS is done, clear input_text.
when adding to input_text, if it is not empty, wait for 30 seconds or so π
As always brilliant Sir!
lol - simple hack, but can be done easily without too much effort!
@tidal bronze better yet, use shopping list!
@tidal bronze there are limitations with shopping list as well. will look into it.
you can add, remove items programmatically, but you can't get all items at once!
I am also diving deep π
cool... we can use input-text easily. will look into it tomorrow! and we will see to it. I have been wanting to do this too!
FORBIDDEN TOPIC
Those rules are for non-mods π
Only saying because mods canβt ban other mods - so it doesnβt apply π
Reeeee mode activated
I'm gonna reeee like I've never reeee'd before
starting to think you need a degree from a community college to understand this RF shit
@forest edge openmqttgateway I say
that is ancient
So are you
so is your cheese
That exact one?

@hushed basalt the auditor
He knows just what you are posting, he knows if you repost, he knows just which of the mods to ping so be good for goodness sake

You better not ping
You better not stir
You better not spam I'm telling you why
Tediore is reeeeing tonight

So what is everyone's take on CORVID-19?
CORVID-19 is a large intelligent black bird but is less sophisticated than the CORVID-20 model π
Hi everybody , can I ask for help here ?
hi I think you'd be better off asking in a relevant channel
Ok ok
Happy with my Home Assistant beer brewery so far!
@midnight adder great job! Please share these kind of updates in #general-archived
You can also share on our community web site. There is a section dedicated to showcasing work.
lmao prepare to have all your data stolen
The Things Network is encrypted and RAK is a reputable company
tbf so was huawei at one point, its a cool little box, just saying you should be careful π
What is that thing? @pure vine
a lorawan gateway
Ah! What sensors do you plan on using with that gateway? Can you integrate with HA?
Currently got it for my final year project, there is a lot of things that can use it and there is a intergration for the largest community network called the things network is in home assistant
Someone suggested Lora earlier for a long range sensor - like having a sensor in a postbox far from home...etc.
yeah, with a good antenna these can reach a few km
and if your lucky to be in a city like barcalona there is quite good coverage provided by other people
Works on mesh?
no
Unfortunately lora public nodes are not as popular in the US. EU there's plenty
Oh except San Francisco π
This lora sounds intriguing. I can automate postbox and backyard things - like playarea lighting, soil moisture levels...etc
oh, the things network has a limit of 30s of airtime a day
private networks dont have the same restriction
That sounds dumb and I donβt like their cloud service either. I may have to look for alternatives
its kind of to prevent people cloging it up with tomany messages
as it uses ISM bands and there isnt really collision detection
@last plaza you can run your own network with something like https://www.chirpstack.io/
Cool!
I am contemplating building a LoRA gateway for my perifial garden stuff, and to even put a few sensors in my daughter's kindergarten
They have hens, roosters and more
Openmqttgateway also supports LoRA
Anyone seen a 300mhz amplifier?
300mhz
Yes, looking for a gate opener booster/amp
Not an option to replace the actual switch with something more usable?
I wish, sadly no.
@last plaza ok! just read that
"Also, donβt forget to share your creations with us via Social Media:
Or via chat, drop us a line in the #the-water-cooler at Discord" in the blogpost
https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2020/02/19/community-highlights/
@midnight adder excellent! Thank you for pointing that out!
Also, community site is also a good place to share your projects.
I never thought about the climate card being for more than just heating control
thats a kinda cool use of it
Discord made it to hacking list! π
NO POLITICS or RELIGION and BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
Is it me or 0.106 changelog is the same as 0.105 ? https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2020/02/26/release-106/
The UK is airstripone from 1984. πππ
How much is it to boost the server?
And what do we get?
Wait so home assistant is no longer FORBIDDEN here?!
π
π₯³
As long as it's not support related I assume
Correct, support still go in a DM to @scenic radish
awesome, lemee get my questions ready.
Lemme get my block button ready
@scenic radish I bought sour patch kids yesterday in Sweden
Oooooo
You gotta try the sour patch watermelons if you can find them, they're awesome
This is the extreme ones
Had to figure out what you like
So they had them in Sweden
Extreme sour is the best if you can handle it.
It was not very sour @last plaza
We have a lot of sour candy in Scandinavia
So pretty used to it
@scenic radish now I know your poison
Alright lads and ladettes
Not sure what the best channel is as I'm not really after support, just ideas.
Do you think these are the best cards for this info? I'm unsure, feel like it could be displayed better, but not sure how best to do it...
#frontend-archived is the best place to ask about stuff to do with the frontend/cards
How many piholes does it take to... π
@clear ferry our kids love sour candy. Me not so much.
the real question is what value do you get from seeing that stuff.
Pihole π€’
PFblockerNG
Fancy!
Yeah, I used to run a esxi cluster, now I can run everything in docker, except the firewall which runs on a AliExpress minipc
And some more intensive stuff in freebsd jails
I have my nas anyway so
I use pihole, but I see no value in seeing how many things it blocked.
if I wanna know if its working, i'd monitor the web interface or something lol
presumably if it stops working I will know since it does all of my DNS.
Adguard was faster for me
My home assistant history has been to add cool stuff that I didn't realize was supported.
then realize its overloaded with stuff I don't care to see.
Pare it down
repeat
Auto populated interfaces π€’
Zzz installing 3x HPUX servers tomorrow, first new install I'm doing in atleast 5 years
I'm rusty
oh nothing is auto populated
just my brain being like, yea I need that
until brain says nah you dont need that
@last plaza @scenic radish I also let my 16 month old daughter taste them, she made a face that said they were a little sour
Capture those precious moments!!!
is it possible in Home assistant to capture live video from Arlo Camera's? I do not see any intergration for that.
@gritty bane #cameras-archived might help you
any idea of what can be capture using this intergration?
@last plaza the only 16 month old I know that has rebooted a freenas system for upgrade too
Daddy wrote the command, but she pushed enter
The time she broke my configuration.yaml on the other hand
lol
@rain swift It's just nice to see. If I want a quick peek, it's quicker than logging into each Pi-Hole individually.
Sort of beside the point though isn't it π
And if it isn't working I wouldn't notice for a while, as I have two nodes π
@clear ferry Convince me on pfBlocker! I've considered switching but have no reason to really, so it'd be pointless effort.
the heck is pfblocker?
Proper software
proper for what
Blocking ads π
looks like it does what I was doing with pf and a script lol
so we think its better than pihole?
ima be setting up my pfsense box tonight
Well, apparently... Yet to hear why though π
Genuinely interested as I'd be all for switching if there's good reason to!
block norway
I was blocking china and russia before with pf
block norway!
pihole is my dns and dhcp though so I need a good reason to re set up my static dns entries and dhcp reservations.
the single greatest source of all outdated suggestions!
Hi, which channel might be the best to ask about the state of a fail over solution for home assistant?
There isn't one, but #general-archived maybe
There isnt one because its not needed π
Also, it's "not trivial"
@clear ferry Apple secretly throttled older phones to conserve battery life and forcing users to upgrade, finally settled $500 Million settlement! Another reason to have Apple, now you get up to $1500 if you claim you have one.
Unless something was designed with it in mind, failover is "fun"
I know, but a friend of mine wants to run it on a shady old Laptop he had on the shelve for many years. The point is i would't be suprised if i'd turn around and IT would explode..... So I want to place a raspberry pi in the network that performs some network monitoring Tasks and can take over for a few hours should the laptop crash or fail permanent until i got around to repair it.
Worth looking at the forum threads then
I love watching John Oliver lol https://youtu.be/c09m5f7Gnic
@last plaza i have a old 3gs in a drawer, let me pull it out
I use the old ones as iPods at home - use it as a music players to play music on wifi speakers
Which TV has the best integration with HASS? Might be in the market for a new one but wanted to do maybe some notifications or something on it screen if possible
may have just answered my own question looks like LG WebOS has notification support
Also it's probably a question for #hardware-archived
thanks @orchid rose wasn't sure where to ask π
Generally in a class action you end up with about 5 cents after lawyer fees and everyone makes their claim
well now we don't need a coronavirus addon cause frenck made it into an intergration lol
Because so many people claim, layers take a huge chunk, that's the only reason they do it, so you end up with very little after it's divided equally, talking about the apple battery thing.
it's one of those should it be a controversial thing or not type of things lol
Was this sponsored by George soros
Next they will put some kind of election integration and then tell you that you can't talk about it
I could see a lot more US HA users using that if it could be narrowed down by state > county > city for precautionary purposes. considering they stated 40-60% of all american's will have it by end of the year it would serve as a heads up when you should be washing your hands even more ect lol
Cough politics cough
I don't think you worry about specific cities/areas. Precautions should be the same.
what do you mean
By the time an area gets tested as confirmed wide spread
It's already been out for 2-3 weeks
It may already be at that stage, but if things get worse social distancing should be in effect
Reduce contact with people to a minimum, whether you're sick or healthy
Because less contact at a community scale slows down transmission. Reducing the peak and pushing the level down.
well that's why i said state/counties. the virus is slow so even if it takes time to process confirmed cases if your looking at state/county wide it would still show before it really impacted your immediate area
can anyone here help me understand in plain kitchen english, what a boolean is?
A true or a false
So in computers you have values which are different types
String is a type, different types of numbers, etc
A boolean is a value which can only be true or false. On or off. Yes or No.
tediore or not_tediore
tediore == human
false
so one of my UPS's battery died and I was thinking about getting the newest version of it.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00429N19W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
anyone know if there is an easy utility for creating backup images of hassio installation for my raspberry pi (mac)
Yeah, I can get another battery, and just have another maybe. Wonder how to find out which one it takes.
Pop that bitch open and take a look
Or search your model online to try to find the battery specs
well things are plugged in right now
oh hell
here is the factory ones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GOU93XA?tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1
lol done
loving pfsense btw
@rain swift you might want to see if you can remove the cartridge on the ones you have easily
Then you can buy cheaper probably better generic 12v SLAs
those ups batteries with the manufacture label are the same as the cheaper ones. in fact you can literally pull off the label and see lol
As long as the cartridge can be easily removed
you can usually get a UPS battery replacement for like $30 or less
If it involves dremeling it off and gluing it back on I wouldn't bother
they are designed to be removable lol
dremeling what off?
Then I wouldn't buy UPSs from that company again
no shit, if you got a ups where the batteries are plastic welded in or som crap that thing is trash lol
The link that hmj sent us was two batteries in a cartridge
So buying two generic batteries would still need to be put into the old cartridges
thats not a catridge
Yes it is. It literally says so
thats two batteries facing each other with a middle plastic spacer
CyberPower RB1280X2B Replacement Battery Cartridge, Maintenance-Free, User Installable
lol
that spacer may or may not what puts those batteries in series. i doubt it's anything fancy but should be reusable
As long as the cartridge can be easily removed
@hushed basalt
it'll work
thats all that matters lol
I'm setting up openvpn, is there any advantage of using tcp only over udp only
haha no doubt
what were you going on about firegarbage michael? vlan p0rn sites blocking the browser? lol
it doesn't let you use both
@forest edge fire garbage bypassing my dns adblocking
lol
@rain swift make 2 profiles
use the UDP one for 99% of the time and the TCP only one for if UDP fails to go through
UDP is going to be a hell of a lot faster
the funny thing about firefox and their latest move to using that "DOH" is that mozilla is still selling user data themselves. so they cut out your isp from making any bank but continue to do it themselves lol
yah
ISPs are required to log everything for 2 years here and provide all logs to any agency
Basically any small government office can look at your metadata.
I'll make another profile tomorrow lol
right now i'm getting familiar with the interface. gotta figure out how to do my blocking of entire countries lol and if i can set up a group in here, a table I guess you'd call it and just add things like my IP cams to it to block them from going out the wan port.
and also how to do dmz for the game consoles.
Last Monday "hey, we're pulling you off of the project you're working on for this other project that's higher priority"
today "hey, I just sent you a meeting invite. We're pulling you off of that project for something that we need a demoable product by the 20th"
FML
next week "Hey we need you to work on all 3 projects now"
"and maintain all your regular duties"
And be on call for any other department head pet projects
They don't call it salary slave for nothin
Yeah screw working for a fixed salary with unpaid overtime
salary?
LOL
hourly corp-to-corp contractor π
on the call this afternoon they were like "it's just a demo, it can be fake"
Exactly
they're demoing it to a client who wants to use it
I'm not saying you were working for free
so the client will say "cool, let's get using that"
and then it'll be a BFD that it's a fake "app"
But a lot of company cultures have no paid overtime, or a culture of looking down on anyone who claims it
so I'm probably going to design it how I'd normally design the app and bury the fact it's storing stuff in browser storage behind the service API
then when they say "cool, make it actually work" I just swap to a real http call
In film and tv we call that "shooting the rehersal"
I asked "hey, when did you guys know this was going to be a thing"
"oh, about 6 weeks ago"
Are they the type to constantly email and call people
Especially with open ended questions. Asking questions that take 5 seconds for them to write but the other person half an hour to give a response
@clear ferry i wanna chuck this rf bridge across the room sometimes lol
Do it.
@forest edge RF π€’
@shy comet you guys only work on three projects at once? Lucky

@hushed basalt in Norway they are only allowed to log who owns an IP address, and only for 2 months I believe, and they hardly ever give out the IP addresses unless it's a serious crime (not piracy etc)
also, ludeeus thinking he's entitled to multiple lines of my startup log:

Physical, ran virtual for 3-4 years, but physical since mid 2000s otherwise
Moving to opnsense now because I feel pfsense lagging behind now though
i about died laughing at it, i must have watched it 10 times in a row
@scenic radish sounds like me trying to get hyperv to do my bidding
why do you scream like that tediore?
@clear ferry what are you running for hardware
in norwat pi zero are fast
Ah I see
Started out on a dual pentium 3, moved on to a dl360g4p, moved over to a bl460c g5, then a VM on esxi running on a bl460c g7 and now I run on a minipc from AliExpress

I'm gonna make a 5 GHz microwave
I really wish I could freaking understand how this rf crap works with this bridge, about to cry at the insanity lol
Don't steal my idea
aliexpress is like our microcenter/frys for outside the US lol
well can't say frys anymore
Wireless video stuff was always a crap shoot
Especially camera mounted transmitters on 1km links
But even stadium distances. So much interference out of your control

anyone familiar with chromecast audio?
Yes, I'm familiar with it being discontinued and hoarded by audio people
@clear ferry is it possible to pair a chromecast audio, with a chromecast
so lets say i have a home audio/video receiver in my network closet, and i run all my speakers to it
then i have some chrome cast audios plugged into the inputs on the receiver
They can be in the same audio group I think, but not sure
For multi room streaming
I know @tidal bronze probably knows
so i can not only do audio, but i can stream plex movies to the den for instance, and it plays the plex audio through the chromecast audio, through the receiver, and to the speakers
You can as audio groups only. If you cast plex out will be to AVR and out from that as a single output. You cant group plex audio with others.
Would not work anyway because of latency
If you already have whole house audio. Sync zones and pick CC with plex as the source and output using regular speakers.
@clear ferry is it possible to pair a chromecast audio, with a chromecast
@small gulch yes
Spelling mistake in the latest blog post on home-assistant.io?
0.106.3: **Cornavirus **integration (COVID-19), track the outbreak
I automated my Windows PC to turn off every night when I go to bed, but for the last few days I've had an issue where Windows very quickly just turns on without any apparent reason. For example last night I went to bed at 1AM and was promptly woken up by my PC half an hour later.
I checked the logs and turns out the reason for wake at 1:30AM was to check for scheduled updates. So I googled to see how to fix this issue. Turns out, it's been around at least for five years now and instead of fixing it, Microsoft has disabled the ability to stop the scheduled process from turning on the PC, even with administrative privileges. I found a tool that allows you to run programs with "trusted installer" privileges which allowed me to disable this behavior. Hopefully this will fix the issue, but what a PIA.
I keep getting messaged by random folk to help them even though I have zero experience HA, please amend the rules not to message folk. I just idle here a lot...
@storm crest how did you get a role then? not judging, just asking
rofl
I think this was automatically assigned by being active on the server for a certain period of time
ah, well it's likely the reason you are getting PM'd. you should ask to remove it
guess you could turn PM's off for this server. that would work too
oh that's fantastic
