I need more speed

clear ferry
#

Yes, your upload is terrible

hearty depot

...

#

Fuuu

#

And I upload with 2mbs to drive

#

I hate my isp

clear ferry
#

In though Germany had good interwebs

#

Just move to Norway, it's a short move for you @hearty depot

brisk glen
#

@clear ferry and now?

clear ferry
#

Better

#

I remember speeds like that at college in 2003 PepePopcorn

Would love to @clear ferry got a job for me 🀣

brisk glen
#

@clear ferry well... my phone is only 2x2

this is over wifi

clear ferry
#

@hearty depot easy, we need it people everywhere

hearty depot

grounded for now. My contract is bound for another 1.6 years. But I can take a couple of trainings each year. What you need?

north forum
#

I currently pay $20 USD a month on top of my ISP's monthly plan to double my upstream.... from 5Mbps to 10Mbps........ πŸ˜’

brisk glen

tempting to move outside of the US

clear ferry

Everything everywhere, the market is very open in Norway

brisk glen
#

why is it soo open?

clear ferry
#

@north forum how is life in 2000?

north forum
#

@clear ferry , honestly not sure what year this is. I can get 1,000 down, 10 up ....

clear ferry
#

@brisk glen because everything is booming, cybersecurity, developers, sysadmin etc, just not enough people

#

I get a lot of offers every year

hearty depot
#

Lol. On paper I got 40D/10U

#

Aaah I really hope that will stay this way - I love Norway

civic tulip
#

@brisk glen that's just your LAN speed though :P What's your actual WAN speed?

brisk glen
#

but isnt it cold there?

#

@civic tulip thats my wlan speed

clever mortar

It stays above 100K, so it's not that cold πŸ˜›

brisk glen

@civic tulip only like 90 down and 5 up πŸ˜›

#

tho I am not home much and Im usually at work

#

my boss has 4 Gbit to his mac from the core.........

#

idk how the hell he got them to connect him to the core

civic tulip
#

πŸ’― yummy

#

Is he using a 10gb sfp I'm guessing?

brisk glen
#

more like 4 cables

civic tulip
#

Like thunderbolt 10Gb

brisk glen
#

like I said

#

idk how the hell he got them to do it

clever mortar
#

Likely he know folks who owned an ISP

#

I know somebody else who managed magic like that

#

Yeah, sure, I have my own ASN, doesn't everybody 😱

brisk glen
#

@clever mortar we have fiber from the ISP

#

I think there is a 100Gbit line

civic tulip
#

What on earth is your business lol, like a datacenter or what? What company uses 10gb+ bandwidth

clever mortar
#

Quite a few...

brisk glen

clever mortar

10 Gb and above Internet links aren't that uncommon

I've dealt with one that had dual 32 Gb links

brisk glen

we are moving everything to azure ;.;

heh

wintry crow
#

I love that Azure runs on linux

brisk glen
#

thats like putting HA in kube

#

I love how powershell core runs on linux

civic tulip
#

Right? They should be forced to run the whole of azure in hyperv lol

clear ferry
#

Very few of my customers run anything more than AD in azure

#

Even the hyper v minority

wintry crow
#

We have a bit of Azure, a bit of AWS, but 95% GCP. Tbf works extremely well

clear ferry
#

99% of my customers still run 80% in local DCs

#

With 2 or 3 locations

brisk glen
#

as they should

wintry crow
#

We're dropping all local DCs since we're not using any VPNs into the cloud. Has presented some challenges lol

clear ferry
#

But then again, a lot of my customers aren't even online pepoThink

wintry crow
#

Strange concept today, not being online at all

clever mortar
#

Not really... just less common

clear ferry

Not really, considering the businesses and today's internet either

never heard of them in the US

#

although I am waiting for someone to buy Leeo - they filed bankruptcy recently (maybe it is too late now)

rain swift

forest edge
#

Some lady at Hy-Vee was trying to tell people at the girl scout stand the cookies were made in China lol

last plaza
#

@brisk glen this is more of a #the-water-cooler conversation... is AdGuard Home runs entirely local?

#

never used it - I don't mind looking into it if it is any better than PiHole

brisk glen
#

It’s like pihole

last plaza
#

ok...

brisk glen
#

But it supports things like doh,DoT

#

More features

#

Less crap

#

Portable

last plaza
#

sweet

brisk glen
#

Yah, it’s a little better

rain swift
#

none of the additional stuff adguard does really matters, and I tried to run dnscrypt on my firewall and the servers were always going down

#

so I ended up going back to good ol google

#

the extra stuff they claim you need I didn't I just installed it on ubuntu server with one command

last plaza
#

I like what I am seeing there!

rain swift
#

I mean i'm all about competition though lol

#

I run pihole in a vm so no biggy to fire up a new vm and try something else out

brisk glen
#

I use quad 9

rain swift
#

my new firewall should be in tomorrow

#

can't waaiit

brisk glen
#

Adguard home uses quad 9

#

What did you buy?

rain swift
#

netgate sg-3100

last plaza
#

this will be another weekend project... I can't afford to break anything on Sunday night!

rain swift
#

aka pfsense

#

yeah, I'm gonna try to pre config the new firewall and do a quick swapout lol

last plaza
#

I use Palo Alto firewall, pretty damn advanced in its capabilities, but extreely complex to navigate the admin dashboard

rain swift
#

I just want a nice easy to use GUI lol

brisk glen
rain swift
#

my openbsd firewall has served me for 5 years

last plaza
#

pfsense is good, I block about 140K domains and my home network is pretty clean mostly - although cloudfront makes it difficult at times

brisk glen
#

Dns over port 443

rain swift
#

Unable to parse the request

brisk glen
#

My ISP probably hates me

last plaza
#

why?

#

oh DNS over 443?

rain swift
#

i'm blocking 125,337 domains

#

and yeah, home network is pretty clean

#

I run ublock origin and stuff too

last plaza
#

not bad! you can tell the difference on many sites with pi-hole and without pihole

rain swift
#

big time

brisk glen
#

A big difference

rain swift
#

I can't stand surfing the net "bare back"

#

its like holy crap how can anyone stand this

brisk glen
#

It even blocks my wife’s pandora ads on her phone at home

rain swift
#

I love going to those sites to watch a movie streaming and watching all their crap not working

last plaza
#

no way - we went to a friend's place a few weeks ago for the weekend, our kids opened their iPad searched online and it opened 150 tabs in their browser

rain swift
#

yeah my wife was asking me about something the other day, I was like, if pihole is blocking it, it didn't need to be opened lol

last plaza
#

they really have no clue how clean our home network is... as soon as they step outside, it is ugly out there

brisk glen
#

Lol

rain swift
#

very

#

I also run all linux here so, that helps

brisk glen
#

Adguard home inside docker with auto updates On top of Ubuntu core

#

100% hands off

rain swift
#

yeah thats pihole for me

brisk glen
#

I forgot about it

last plaza
#

I got a dual boot Ubuntu and Windows on my personal laptop - other than that, everything else is linux based - except windows 2016 server where @velvet horizon is running

rain swift
#

I go in and do ubuntu updates now and then

brisk glen
#

Idk why but pihole keeps fucking up for me

rain swift
#

weird

brisk glen
#

Takes or a week

last plaza
#

it is so easy to troubleshoot

rain swift
#

I have 0 issues with it

brisk glen
#

I know but I really like adguard home now

last plaza
#

they are pretty similar in many aspects, you're good!

rain swift
#

once something is cached and I do a dig query time is 0ms

last plaza
#

yup

rain swift
#

does adguard use unbound?

#

I was running all that crap on my firewall by hand, thats why now I want everything to be easy button lol

#

dnsmasq, unbound, dnscrypt, openvpn, whyy

brisk glen
#

No

#

Adguard uses nothing except itself

rain swift
#

interesting

last plaza
#

what do you run your pfsense on?

rain swift
#

hardware I bought off amazon lol

brisk glen
#

That’s how they can claim it’s portable

rain swift
#

I slapped it together old school

last plaza
#

do you pay or just use the community edition?

rain swift
#

it literally only gets rebooted when I do openbsd updates

#

I touch it so rarely I forget how to do stuff half the time lol

brisk glen
#

I never touch it

#

Ubuntu core will roll back if it fucks up

rain swift
#

aww yeah

last plaza
#

a bunch of my co-workers use netgate hw, they spent like $250 on them

rain swift
#

you must be doing that one thing

#

what do they call it?

brisk glen
#

Ubuntu core

#

Everything is a snap package

#

The kernel? Snap

rain swift
#

isn't there a service or something for patching the kernel without rebooting

brisk glen
#

Yah, but I’m not using a normal server

rain swift
#

then when you finally reboot everything gets applied permanently

#

ahhh

#

got ya

brisk glen
#

Apt is not even installed

rain swift
#

noice

#

ubuntu server its stripped down enough for me

brisk glen
#
rain swift
#

when the pihole pi died I had to set up the vm, install ubuntu, set everything up at like midnight lol

last plaza
#

what other hardwares can you run ubuntu core?

hushed basalt
#

"bulletproof upgrades"

#

What could possibly go wrong

brisk glen
#

It’s basically designed for power failures

#

@last plaza any

last plaza
#

I have a battery backup for all my servers anyway

brisk glen
#

You can compile it for any hardware

last plaza
#

even some of the RPIs as long as they are close to my UPS proximity wise

brisk glen
#

Same here

#

I just wanted something 100% hands off

hushed basalt
#

Are industrial places moving away from ladder logic PLCs to something a bit more mainstream?

last plaza
#

yup - my network modem, routers, firewall, switches are all on UPS. sometimes we lose power for a quick second/minute, and my network is uninterrupted!

rain swift
#

I keep all the network gear on UPS

last plaza
#

if we lose power for longer period because of heavy snow or something, that's a while another issue

rain swift
#

my UPS sends me an alert when they lose wall power

brisk glen
#

I have everything on a UPS at home

last plaza
#

I use HA for it πŸ˜‰

rain swift
#

yeah I'll go in and start shutting stuff down to save power

last plaza
#

you could initiate shutdown with HA

brisk glen
#

I just wanted my DNS server to be on something I never touch

rain swift
#

I should set that up

#

I could

#

not hard to have it send winders a shutdown command lol

brisk glen
#

Lol

hushed basalt
#

Networked UPS works well

last plaza
#

yup

rain swift
#

my list of things to implement keeps getting longer.

last plaza
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

Every server should tap into the networked UPS and shut itself down

brisk glen
#

I need bigger.... networked UPS systems

rain swift
#

my ups is USB

hushed basalt
#

You can proxy it

#

So you usb it into a main server

brisk glen
#

Everything is usb for now

rain swift
#

I'd love a networked one though

#

yes

hushed basalt
#

And then that shares it on the network

rain swift
#

the UPS's connect to the BI machine because I don't have any nut server or whatever

hushed basalt
#

Obviously something core or low power

rain swift
#

thats another thing I want to set up

hushed basalt
#

You can even use an old RPI2

#

Or rpi1 even

brisk glen
#

Zero

rain swift
#

got a few of those

hushed basalt
#

Ew

brisk glen
#

Lol

rain swift
#

dunno if my UPS's will talk to nut or whatever though

hushed basalt
#

Just want an ethernet, a usb port and a debian based OS

last plaza
#

I bought 10 Pi Zeros when they were on sale for $0.99c, and never used one of them!

rain swift
#

ha

hushed basalt
#

50% off something you don't need is 100% waste of money :D

#

Now don't look in my garage

last plaza
#

well said!

brisk glen
#

Lol

rain swift
#

when you buy something thinking i'll probably use that

#

its such a good deal I have to buy it

hushed basalt
#

Then you also need to buy storage to storage and organise all that stuff

brisk glen
#

I need a 10 bay nas :p

hushed basalt
#

Then you need to buy real estate to store all that storage

brisk glen
#

For home use

rain swift
#

I want an ixsystems nas

hushed basalt
#

I need to declutter like crazy

last plaza
#

I have been lookin for one! I just missed a deal, I'm so mad!

rain swift
#

that has zfs

hushed basalt
#

We have a 4 bedrooms worth of stuff in a 2 bedroom atm too

#

So that's not helping

last plaza
#

It was a synology, only 5 bay

forest edge
#

you don't already have a synology michael?

rain swift
#

a nas I also don't have to touch, just set it up and swap out drives when they die

hushed basalt
last plaza
#

NAS is a best investment! you can do so many things with it

hushed basalt
#

If your UPS has a usb A port you can even power the old Pi off it

forest edge
#

I have a 4tb goflex lol

#

can't do much that

rain swift
#

so many tabs of things to read

last plaza
#

goflex?

#

ah, the seagate one

hushed basalt
#

Synology is very simple and straight forward, but you may outgrow it for a home server

rain swift
#

I just started using the chrome tab sync stuff so I can get to everything i'm looking at from everywhere, why wasn't I doing this sooner.

brisk glen
#

Nas and nextcloud

#

With elastic search

last plaza
#

I love that the NAS either synology or qnap all have container station - you could run many things in containers in there - you don't need any additional server hardware

hushed basalt
#

My synology has screwed me over a few times. Can't free up port 80/433, can't setup passwordless sudo without risking bricking it,

rain swift
#

I need to learn more about containers

forest edge
#

lol

rain swift
#

they seem so awesome

hushed basalt
#

Also synology has like years between docker version upgrades

rain swift
#

I didn't use containers until I got into forbidden topic

forest edge
#

prebuilt nas's these days are too over priced

last plaza
#

they have a proprietary container implementation

forest edge
#

even the kits you can buy are over priced cause nas is a "trend" lol

rain swift
#

the cloud is just someone else's computer.

last plaza
#

yup

hushed basalt
#

Building a desktop PC as a nas isn't exactly cheap either

rain swift
#

we need a forbidden topic type deal that you just install and it turns a bunch of drives into a nas

hushed basalt
#

You guys would hate the term serverless then

forest edge
#

cheaper than prebuilt and with better hardware

rain swift
#

or just a nas addon lol

last plaza
#

again, NAS is one of my best investments - the trick is finding right HDD with right sizing, and after that, you are set for a very long time!

rain swift
#

I want a 2 tier nas

#

fast SSD's and spinning rust

hushed basalt
#

@rain swift serverbuilds.net have some good builds if you don't mind high power consumption

last plaza
#

you could build NAS with SSDs, that will cost you a fortune, but supr fast!

forest edge
#

solid states in nas always seem silly to me

rain swift
#

I don't love hgh power consumption if I can help it lol

hushed basalt
#

Linuxserver.io discord have some blog articles too. Perfect media server 2017 etc

rain swift
#

SSD in a nas is for vm's and stuff

#

I guess thats more of a storage array

#

it all blurrs together

hushed basalt
#

Just beware that cheap ssds are like TLC which means they're quite slow and wear out easily

last plaza
#

I wish I have GPUs on my Poweredge Servers - that's the only thing I miss today

hushed basalt
#

After the SLC cache layer is depleted

#

But depending on your use case you may never see it depleted

#

Not all solid state storage is created equally

forest edge
#

you like how newer ssd's are less reliable than the first generations? lol

#

I always find it a hoot

hushed basalt
#

Selected the appropriate equipment for the job is just part of design

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza you will not miss GPU with 1019+ πŸ˜„

last plaza
#

I know, I missed that deal though, I am still mad!

hushed basalt
#

I know situations where a flash cache served with 10gbe would totally change their world

#

1019+?

tidal bronze
#

Will come around. Add 2 x nvme as well and you are ready to rock.

last plaza
#

I might just go buy it. it is only like $100 difference!

#

let me know next time you find the deal... I'd jump on it

tidal bronze
#

Will keep an eye for sure.

last plaza
#

@hushed basalt 1019+ is the synology NAS that was on sale earlier this week

hushed basalt
#

Ah i see

#

Does it have 10gbe or sfp+?

tidal bronze
#

No.

last plaza
#

It is a 5 by instead of typical 4 bay

hushed basalt
#

Hmm. I think the age of 1gbe has passed for anything I buy

forest edge
#

what was it on sale for?

last plaza
#

good cpu and memory, and if you add SSDs, you are set!

tidal bronze
#

But link agg is more than enough for home use

hushed basalt
#

5 bays is nice though. 3+2 SHR2

last plaza
#

$575 something

forest edge
#

yesh

tidal bronze
#

2gig load balanced and plenty.

forest edge
#

I can't bring myself to spend that much on a nas.. just cannot do it lol

hushed basalt
#

@tidal bronze for a lot of people it is. But now that flash storage in NASs and flash storage in desktops is becoming norm, that 10gbe interlink can really make that shared drive feel more local

#

Obviously for serving to plex it's irrelevant

last plaza
#

although if I buy another QNAP, I can sync between qnaps easily.. otherwise I may have to use scheduled jobs to sync

hushed basalt
#

But for serving network drives to desktops it makes a big difference

tidal bronze
#

I do have a 12TB SSD Nas πŸ˜‰

last plaza
#

same here - I want to add new HDDs each with 12TBs

#

but not SSDs πŸ™‚

tidal bronze
#

10GB is pointless ATM fro home use.

last plaza
#

the next one will be a big one for me for sure!

forest edge
hushed basalt
#

Link aggregation is maybe 200MB/s if you're lucky?

tidal bronze
#

Unless 5 people are watching UHD 4:4:4 with truhd audio lol

last plaza
#

we only have 3 TVs, 50 people can watch but only 3 streams max πŸ˜›

#

mobiles don't count

tidal bronze
#

220 is plenty.

hushed basalt
#

Nvme is in the 1000s of MB/s

tidal bronze
#

Only reason to have a 10G network ATM is if you are editing 4k 8k video on NAS. I think that's a very few on the planet

hushed basalt
#

You don't have to be editing online to want that extra speed

tidal bronze
#

I do have a 10g subnet at home but trust me not worth the hype.

hushed basalt
#

Writing and then checksumming back on even a days worth of Blackmagic RAW during offload would make it very handy

forest edge
#

nothing would even utilize it

tidal bronze
#

exactly

last plaza
#

my dell poweredge has 8 drive slots - currently I only have 2 HDDs in there. I can hydrate that and use that as a NAS as well

#

I already run esxi on it, having extra disk drives would be easy to set up NAS in there

tidal bronze
#

you are set with that @last plaza

forest edge
#

rpi4 cluster nas would be neat

hushed basalt
#

Just get like 8 poweredges and set up ceph. Will be super simple barely an inconvenience

last plaza
#

portability is the question @tidal bronze

#

I can take NAS with me, but I can't take my server with me πŸ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

With you where?

forest edge
#

backpacking the nas

hushed basalt
#

Hiking

tidal bronze
#

Once you add the 1019+ for plex you will be golden @last plaza πŸ™‚

last plaza
#

in case of fire, I can grab it and run out side πŸ˜›

hushed basalt
#

Eh id just have onsite and offsite backup and let it burn

last plaza
#

It was too late by the time I found the deal. next time I am not wasting a second!

forest edge
#

hmm that be a hard choice, i'd take the drives and leave the nas then havve the insurance upgrade me

last plaza
#

I could buy retail price, I'm not in a hurry, and I'd rather use the difference for tax and on SSDs

#

I hate that B&H and Amazon are collecting tax these days 😭

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza if you want you can sync encrypted to one my syno units and I can do the same with yours, critical shares. I have 1 syncing to a buddy in San Francisco and 1 in Long Island. πŸ™‚

hushed basalt
#

The size of stuff I actually care about isn't that big. Maybe 1TB

#

Everything else is just linux ISOs, no need to back them up

brisk glen
#

Bla

#

I need 5 TB

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze that's a great idea - DR across Murrica! πŸ™‚

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze lol why? what spy like data you be sharing?

tidal bronze
#

Yep and free :_)

last plaza
#

lol - love the idea - we should start a group across the globe

hushed basalt
#

I did that when I had a NAS set up at my mums house

tidal bronze
#

Replication with Dedpue runs like butter

hushed basalt
#

None of my friends have servers

last plaza
#

I need to get my brother to buy a NAS in UK, I'm all set! πŸ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

They just all watch netflix and OTA like plebs

forest edge
#

I'd always think the FBI would be showing up at any minute lol

hushed basalt
#

Or they put everything on usb hdds and plug it into their playstations

tidal bronze
#

Best thing with syno is 2 click setup and forget. πŸ™‚ You can even test failover

last plaza
#

@forest edge what do you do to get FBI's attention? πŸ˜‚

hushed basalt
#

Unreturned library books

last plaza
#

lmao

tidal bronze
#

lol

forest edge
#

if your cross sharing with other people, it's not your stuff you would be concerned about lol

last plaza
#

it is all happening over SSL, and I sincerely hope they can't see data in transit

hushed basalt
#

Too much noise

tidal bronze
hushed basalt
#

I have no doubt they can backdoor targeted people. And they dragnet anything that is hosted by tech companies

forest edge
#

yea but if they get busted and the FBI takes over the source

#

your kind of sol

hushed basalt
#

Eh

last plaza
#

well, it is beyond what we can do

hushed basalt
#

I don't think FBI is going to raid my nzbget server

forest edge
#

not in au no

#

lol

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze Server A is yours and B and C are friend's?

tidal bronze
#

Yes

last plaza
#

awesome!

hushed basalt
#

What's recovery like

last plaza
#

make sure they are far away from California πŸ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

Say if your main nas gets hosed

#

Do you have keys backed up for the recovery

tidal bronze
#

1 click mount or recovery.

last plaza
#

he keeps the Server B keys in server A and C, and vice versa

hushed basalt
#

You don't want a , key locked in the safe scenario

last plaza
#

the key management is always a nightmare! we have vaults and vaults, and still confused on who gets the keys to the vaults

tidal bronze
#

1 of them is a 8TB photo share, which I seeded and shipped.

last plaza
#

why don't you just upload everything to internet and let internet takes backups for you for free? πŸ˜›

forest edge
#

that's alot of dog pics

tidal bronze
#

I have loads of 4k material from shoots B-roll

last plaza
#

lol - I make backups in multiple HDDs and keep them in bank safes

tidal bronze
#

I do that too better to have it than be sorry.

last plaza

About 10 years ago I lost 4 drives, and that was it.
yup - this is what worries me!!!

forest edge

yea i think google photo will still be around lol

tidal bronze

I have some on goog but I can handle my backups

I actually thought of buying a NAS and keeping it remotely in brother's house and manage it remotely

tidal bronze

That's a great idea too

Google photos compresses like shit

tidal bronze

yup - you also give them readonly access for certain folder and admin console

hushed basalt

I lost the originals from my honeymoon

build a small underground enclosure 20ft from the house and bury a power and ethernet cable to it and stick a nas in that lol

They're on google photos but it's garbage

I'm sure there is way to restore original uploads

tidal bronze

The google unlimited is good. I am planning on moving plex storage to that with rclone encrypted. Not spend money to store this media crap.

tidal bronze

plex works great with rclone and encrypted. So yep @hushed basalt

hushed basalt

of course! ingress and egress is where they get you!

@ashen minnow 2 words, "not sure"!

ashen minnow

@last plaza "same here"

last plaza

that is not a popular hardware among the people here, if someone knows, they will jump to answer

ashen minnow
#

Its an amazing thing

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza off topic but have you looked into queuing TTS?

hushed basalt
#

Why would you want that anyways

#

A universal remote

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze unless you use kafka or something, the mqtt doesn't support queueing

ashen minnow
#

My dream is - to use it as an I remote to automate old IR devices

#

like my TV hehe - I want it to wake me up by switching to the news channel

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza not MQTT lol, TTS

hushed basalt
#

There's a dozen devices that are cheap and do that easily

last plaza
hushed basalt

wtf not even the coronavirus slows those bastards down they just use it to create more phishing scams lmao

last plaza
#

will try it out, an you can run it in docker with easy steps and will be able to use queueing

hushed basalt
#

I do feel like the topics are a bit too splintered tbh

#

There's a balance between too few and too many

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza so garage opened/ medicine reminder fired at the same time will get played one after the other ?

hushed basalt
#

But a lot of stuff ends up in #330944238910963714 even though that's just for installing homeassistant /hassio

ashen minnow
#

@hushed basalt perfect advice thanks you πŸ™‚

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze yes

hushed basalt
#

Advice?

tidal bronze
#

Outstanding

last plaza
#

biggest difference between mqtt and kafka is that MQTT overrides old values in a given topic, whereas kafka queues them, - you can go back and play all of them if you want

ashen minnow
#

@hushed basalt The Broadlink Smart Home Hub - didn't know it existed - thought I would have to homebrew it

last plaza
#

you can setup kafka and zookeeper locally in docker

hushed basalt
#

It's rare to need to diy stuff nowadays

#

Custom flashing sure, but soldering irons aren't needed as much anymore

last plaza
#

I used to be a believer in DIY years ago, but not anymore. there are so many off the shelf products, no need to do DIY in the automation space anymore

hushed basalt
#

Indeed

last plaza
#

there are so many OEM products out there that does everything you need

hushed basalt
#

Although I worry that a lot of manufacturers are making their stuff locked down with certs

#

Can't mitm as much anymore

ashen minnow
#

Yup - but I often end up buying the junk - or going overboard with the solution

last plaza
#

the DIY is good for kids in school to learn about stuff but no need for practical use

hushed basalt
#

DIY is for novel stuff. But nothing of what we do is novel.

#

Controlling lights, doors, TTS, tvs, that's all standard nowadays

last plaza
#

yup

hushed basalt
#

We're getting to ride the wave of mainstream automation

ashen minnow
#

Haha in my case - I shouold prob buy a new TV that I can more easily control

hushed basalt
#

Then hacking it to our benefit

ashen minnow
#

I just hate throwing away a perfectly nice screen - or just giving away

hushed basalt
#

Controlling source, volume etc is easy enough with a IR blaster

#

But deeper integration is nice

ashen minnow
#

yup I did it before with an arduino by recording the codes

hushed basalt
#

I recommend LG. WebOS is nice

ashen minnow
#

but I thought there may be something else by now haha and there is

last plaza
#

@ashen minnow just connect a RPi to your TV and you are all set

#

use the screen as you want

ashen minnow
#

It's a dumb tv - so all brightness etc are all done by IR - my arduino version ran thru the menus

#

it was the lack of an RTC that failed it

tidal bronze
#

DIY will always have a place with HA if you want to do things out of the norm and not be stuck to what's on the shelf. But as for motion sensors etc, right now cheaper to buy stuff like zigbee. Buy the time you put stuff together it's usually little more than retail. But if you take WLED for instance, there's nothing in the market unless commercial stuff that can even come close to the functionality it offers.

lol

tidal bronze

best part is multi-segment in the same strip or length. Displays as separate lights in HA. Can run all individual effects color pallets in segments. But single strip πŸ˜‰ What more can you ask.

dull chasm
#

awesome ....putting leds underbed for latenate tv watching or pee time 🀣

last plaza
#

that's a great idea! I need to do for our master bathroom - right now, we have motion sensor lights that turns on full brightness

last plaza

we have forced air and air condition... we are used to it. we do have personal heaters if needed!

@dull chasm you burn wood in there?

@tidal bronze as long as you maintain humidity, we're usually fine.

dull chasm

yea ...i dont have one now but have had recentyly

last plaza

@dull chasm did you put temp sensor in there?

dull chasm
#

no

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza it's dry here as you know. So force heat is very irritating.

#

Fireplace makes it so cozy.

last plaza

that's why you need a humidifier with heat

tidal bronze
#

Humidity and I will run.

last plaza
#

our kids will have nose bleeds if it is too dry and heat is on

tidal bronze
#

Checking kafka

#

@last plaza can you explain TTS method you are using.

last plaza
#

I am just using directly - pass a text to notify method, that uses polly

#

instead, we could drop a message in kafka, and have a kafka listener process the message.

#

kafka support has been added lately, but I haven't checked it in detail

tidal bronze
#

Got it.

last plaza
#

the current kafka implementation is limited to history only. 😦

tidal bronze
#

Mom's med reminders and door alerts for the nurse fires at the same time, sometimes, so need to figure out a way to store and play them

last plaza
#

I see. another work around would be to use an input_text πŸ˜‰

#

basically what you do is, add the message to input_text, only if it is empty. and on input_text change event, call TTS notify method, after TTS is done, clear input_text.

#

when adding to input_text, if it is not empty, wait for 30 seconds or so πŸ™‚

tidal bronze
#

As always brilliant Sir!

last plaza

lol - simple hack, but can be done easily without too much effort!

@tidal bronze better yet, use shopping list!

hushed basalt
last plaza

you can add, remove items programmatically, but you can't get all items at once!

pure vine

Currently got it for my final year project, there is a lot of things that can use it and there is a intergration for the largest community network called the things network is in home assistant

last plaza
#

Someone suggested Lora earlier for a long range sensor - like having a sensor in a postbox far from home...etc.

pure vine
#

yeah, with a good antenna these can reach a few km

#

and if your lucky to be in a city like barcalona there is quite good coverage provided by other people

oh, the things network has a limit of 30s of airtime a day

last plaza

rain swift

forest edge

I could see a lot more US HA users using that if it could be narrowed down by state > county > city for precautionary purposes. considering they stated 40-60% of all american's will have it by end of the year it would serve as a heads up when you should be washing your hands even more ect lol

hushed basalt

I don't think you worry about specific cities/areas. Precautions should be the same.

forest edge

what do you mean

hushed basalt
#

By the time an area gets tested as confirmed wide spread

#

It's already been out for 2-3 weeks

#

It may already be at that stage, but if things get worse social distancing should be in effect

#

Reduce contact with people to a minimum, whether you're sick or healthy

#

Because less contact at a community scale slows down transmission. Reducing the peak and pushing the level down.

forest edge
#

well that's why i said state/counties. the virus is slow so even if it takes time to process confirmed cases if your looking at state/county wide it would still show before it really impacted your immediate area

Then I wouldn't buy UPSs from that company again

forest edge
#

no shit, if you got a ups where the batteries are plastic welded in or som crap that thing is trash lol

hushed basalt
#

The link that hmj sent us was two batteries in a cartridge

#

So buying two generic batteries would still need to be put into the old cartridges

forest edge
#

thats not a catridge

hushed basalt
#

Yes it is. It literally says so

forest edge
#

thats two batteries facing each other with a middle plastic spacer

that spacer may or may not what puts those batteries in series. i doubt it's anything fancy but should be reusable

As long as the cartridge can be easily removed

#

I'm setting up openvpn, is there any advantage of using tcp only over udp only

brisk glen
#

its slower?

#

might bypass some firewalls

#

let it use both...

rain swift
#

haha no doubt

forest edge
#

what were you going on about firegarbage michael? vlan p0rn sites blocking the browser? lol

rain swift
#

it doesn't let you use both

brisk glen
#

@forest edge fire garbage bypassing my dns adblocking

forest edge
#

lol

brisk glen
#

@rain swift make 2 profiles

#

use the UDP one for 99% of the time and the TCP only one for if UDP fails to go through

#

UDP is going to be a hell of a lot faster

forest edge
#

the funny thing about firefox and their latest move to using that "DOH" is that mozilla is still selling user data themselves. so they cut out your isp from making any bank but continue to do it themselves lol

brisk glen
#

yah

hushed basalt
#

ISPs are required to log everything for 2 years here and provide all logs to any agency

#

Basically any small government office can look at your metadata.

rain swift
#

I'll make another profile tomorrow lol

#

right now i'm getting familiar with the interface. gotta figure out how to do my blocking of entire countries lol and if i can set up a group in here, a table I guess you'd call it and just add things like my IP cams to it to block them from going out the wan port.

and also how to do dmz for the game consoles.

Exactly

they're demoing it to a client who wants to use it

hushed basalt
#

I'm not saying you were working for free

last dirge

so the client will say "cool, let's get using that"

#

and then it'll be a BFD that it's a fake "app"

hushed basalt
#

But a lot of company cultures have no paid overtime, or a culture of looking down on anyone who claims it

last dirge
#

so I'm probably going to design it how I'd normally design the app and bury the fact it's storing stuff in browser storage behind the service API

#

then when they say "cool, make it actually work" I just swap to a real http call

hushed basalt

In film and tv we call that "shooting the rehersal"

@hushed basalt in Norway they are only allowed to log who owns an IP address, and only for 2 months I believe, and they hardly ever give out the IP addresses unless it's a serious crime (not piracy etc)

small gulch
#

anyone familiar with chromecast audio?

clear ferry
#

Yes, I'm familiar with it being discontinued and hoarded by audio people lmao

small gulch
#

@clear ferry is it possible to pair a chromecast audio, with a chromecast

#

so lets say i have a home audio/video receiver in my network closet, and i run all my speakers to it

#

then i have some chrome cast audios plugged into the inputs on the receiver

clear ferry
#

They can be in the same audio group I think, but not sure

#

For multi room streaming

#

I know @tidal bronze probably knows

small gulch
#

so i can not only do audio, but i can stream plex movies to the den for instance, and it plays the plex audio through the chromecast audio, through the receiver, and to the speakers

tidal bronze
#

You can as audio groups only. If you cast plex out will be to AVR and out from that as a single output. You cant group plex audio with others.

#

Would not work anyway because of latency

#

If you already have whole house audio. Sync zones and pick CC with plex as the source and output using regular speakers.

#

@clear ferry is it possible to pair a chromecast audio, with a chromecast
@small gulch yes

I automated my Windows PC to turn off every night when I go to bed, but for the last few days I've had an issue where Windows very quickly just turns on without any apparent reason. For example last night I went to bed at 1AM and was promptly woken up by my PC half an hour later.

I checked the logs and turns out the reason for wake at 1:30AM was to check for scheduled updates. So I googled to see how to fix this issue. Turns out, it's been around at least for five years now and instead of fixing it, Microsoft has disabled the ability to stop the scheduled process from turning on the PC, even with administrative privileges. I found a tool that allows you to run programs with "trusted installer" privileges which allowed me to disable this behavior. Hopefully this will fix the issue, but what a PIA.
