what connection you using to connect to monitor?
HDMI only
That's strange, had that issue with quick boot on. Use 3 of them but not nothing
Model? Fans kick in?
You can also try a bootable USB and f10
Make a bootable usb and boot with it
if a bios screen doesn't appear then it probably won't make it to a usb boot
Hard reset and keep pressing F2 or F10.
check to make sure the mem sticks are seated properly ect
Last time I got the NUC, I got a fucked up M2. Such a PITA. Finally returned and got a dell power edge server.
I am so stupid
Do tell 😊
it's because he didn't build an unground house
That and I was using a hdmi from a pre existing device but I unplugged the end that was plugged into the TV. So my HDMI cable went from my DVD player to the NUC 🤦🏻♂️
lmao
Lmao
sounds like a tediore moment jk
Got so excited. Just started plugging shit in
Happens!
Ok. Now at least I have video
Also NUC needs the Hdmi handshake at start.
What OS are you installing?
Debian
Right on
You are all set then. There is nothing more.
I am in love with them. Also ESXI, thanks @last plaza👍
I wouldn’t do it any other way!
I have seen ESXI at work
Yep. Now got vmotion across 2 NUCs
@green inlet definitely recommend esxi
For a Linux noob?
Makes your life so easy move hosts around and backups and restores
@green inlet yes. Do ESXI
You don’t need to be smart. If I can do it anyone can do it. @green inlet
Lmao. I am lower than the bar 😁
We are here to help. Go for it.
There are so many videos online to help you as well. Worth spending time on those.
Don’t install anything real yet. Try esxi and you will@not regret
Yep
Ok. Willing to play. I really don’t want to move forbidden topic over till the zwave is upgraded anyway. Will give me some time to mess with it
@last plaza you should try cocksburn port, no pun intended 😜
imagine being one of the first people to go see a doctor in cockburn with an std and trying to fix your burning crotch sensation.
So much to try!
1 a day should do it 😄
This is the sort of crap that happens when NBN techs touch your rack
Idiot split into a perfectly good cat6 run for no damn reason
Yeah scotch locks belong in joints not racks
At least it was solid to solid and not stranded
But idiot had no business in the rack. All he needed to do was delivery service to the MDF so I could take it from there
scotch locks belong in the trash
How would you join street cables without scotch locks?
Nooo my Hulihee is not an acceptable facemask wearing beard!
@hushed basalt I don't like insulation displacement crimps
Ok, @last plaza , I got esxi installed and logged into the host. Send me some links please so I can start watching videos and understand what I have done 🤣
I have seen vsphere at work.....just was setup by someone else
I am forever thankful and amazed by the people on this discord channel. I am older so meeting people on the inter webs is a bit strange. But in a good way.
✌🏻
uh lol
unless you been under a rock for the past 20 years meeting ppl online in one form or another is pretty unavoidable lol
that's how I met my wife
under a rock?
Yea....rock
Lmao
Because........that is for another day
And a big plus.....if you have corona virus, we can talk without masks
IDCs have been fine for me
And I've done thousands and thousands and thousands
You've got to use the right tooling though
Using pliers to crimp scotch loks will give a bad experience

LOL

my sides hurt from laughing
So lets say im a nub, suck at coding, is there like a scratch like block coding gui program for python?
Visual programming?
yeah
One could say node-red is that. It's javascript/node
But to be honest you'll run into a brick wall with node red very quickly where you'll need to write a javascript function
I spy an E36
Work or hobby?
M?
not mine
booo
I had a 95 M3
buddy has one
i dont prescribe to the m tax, lol im poor
but yeah i wanted do use my arduino for something
iirc it used python?
o
you mean something like https://www.codecademy.com/?
my brain has a system built in for active non retention of coding shit for some reason
so uh
is there a gui thing for c?
lol
then dunno what your asking
ever heard of scratch?
there is nothing that will write it for you if that's what your after lol
Work backwards
it's like block based programming for kids, lol
What problem are you trying to solve
node red would be the closet thing visual wise but it still won't be simple like what your talking about
You don't need python for any of that
You can do a lot in just the front end in homeassistant now
#automations-archived will cover all of that
You need to set them up as devices
Have you tried googling arduino homeassistant
Or using an esp8266 or esp32
And esphome
Or just buying a temp sensor ready to go
Xiaomi, hue, etc
If you don't want to program but you're using arduinos.
You can also use a raspberry pi zero with node red if you want something more point and click
But your problem is : you want to run scripts based off temperature and humidity values
But you've gone alll the way to the wrong side, and playing with arduinos for some reason
people here suggested it
People like to build their own toasters
Doesn't mean they should
I would figure out what you need then work backwards
Google temperature sensors homeassistant and go with whatever looks most common and easy to do

the pedo has arrived

He wasn't built using docker-compose ?
Infrastructure as code
Someone mentioned a while back about security bits for stuff, and I mentioned we just sell the bits over the counter here
$8
I got one of those kits too. Amazing that you can even manufacture a 2 mm part with 3 mm tolerances.
The hole in the second and third largest hex bits aren't even centered.
Just some American didn't believe me when I mentioned we sell them over the counter 😂
Go me!! *** stack smashing detected ***: <unknown> terminated
@clear ferry I have a few of those sets 😄
Encountering snow for the first time in two months
Does he think security bits are restricted tools or something
they will be soon enough lmao the world is turning into a nanny state
claim public safety, think of the children, blah blah blah.
Ram prices have dropped?
yeah i was looking at upgrading the RAM in my home computer which is still DDR3 and was surprised at how expensive it was
Older gen is expensive
Past a certain point
It's a "well if you want this stock at this stage you obviously really need it"
yeah, a few times I've upgraded my PC I actually got more money for my old ram than the new ones
memory can be weird like that. If that was only true for some other components too
I'm wanting to go from 16gb to 32gb... thought when I built the computer i used 2x8gb sticks so i would have 2 free slots. turns out i used 4x4gb sticks 🙁
Oofh
it might be a decent time to upgrade to a DDR4 PC anyway at this point instead of buying more into DDR3
found a deal on ebay for 3x8gb sticks for like $50 so i grabbed those, will get me up to 28gb
you'll lose dual channel which is kinda of a big deal
can't be worse than paging out to a spinning disk 😅
probably not but in some cases it's a massive performance penalty. Depends on your usage
I set up a fttc install at my old work today
Urrghh such a joke
Still using copper and rj12 in 2020
I felt dirty plugging in an rj12
my cpu is starting to show its age a bit too... i7-2600k... but i don't really have the money to buy a new process, motherboard, and ram
You can still get decent money for that stuff if you sell it. I sold off my i5-2500k, mobo and 16Gb of ram for a 100€
where is rj12 used telco? I've only ever seen it in phones and the last time I saw one of those was probably 20 years ago
🥶
Hi there! I’ve just joined this channel, although i’ve been using HA for almost 1 year.
I do have a problem, a bit odd i might say, perhaps you can help me - at least point me where I should report it..
In the past months, I’d say in the past 3-4 releases, the HA is restarting my router.
Yes, every time I do a HA restart, if I refresh the lovelace page my router gets reseted.
I have an upc router (and deactivated the device_tracker )
HA installed on a docker - pi4
I’ll switch the discussion to homeassistant topic, sorry
down here in asia is still hot!...relatively, should I add 🙂
(Not joking)
@brisk glen Is it because people get more resistant?
The virus..
Yes
Just today i was wondering, how come these diseases always come from Asia (SARS,now Covid) or Africa (Ebola).
Is it because of the climate?
Or what the fuck they eat
Issue is, this was something that mutated to infect humans
It was already there for animals
In Asia?
I've been following this page: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 and this made me feel better
Just put things in perspective. Ofcours 82k are infected. But only 2,8k died and 33k are recovered. 2 days ago , only 20k recovered.
Anyone doing anything with What3Words to specify the location of devices?
That looks like many a server room I've seen
looks like the back of my computer right now - and I just did the "cable management" today 🙂
@clear ferry Whats the issue?
On a side note, I ordered a netgate sg-3100 today, the old firewall at home is being retired, possibly office space style.
Heh, the oldest thing I have now is 2012... but that 2012 laptop was a high end back then costing 2k
Runs faster than those $600 laptops
Just as fast as intels core M5 series
My 2018 is 100% faster with more cores tho :p
yes
@fading zodiac nothing, just renumbering of a switch stack and replacing one switch in the middle in a 9 switch stack
ah
Philips Hue lights are the funniest lights if you buy them in starter packs
how was y2k a health threat lol
end of days
how easy is it to fry a pi zero?
Depends on the oil you use
or , do the activity lights only work if theres a valid image on the sd?
trying to get motioneyeos going on it
well see if this works
With any Pi the lights only work if there's a valid OS
thx bud
using motioneyeos img for somereason isnt working
flashed direct with etcher
go to start and i see it's doing 2 blinks when plugged in then no act light
got it booting
booted
got in motioneye
but it doesnt see the pi's camera
tryed adding any camera it sees
and nothing on any of the feeds
so it doesnt see any MMAL camera
but sees 4 "usb" cameras
Noe just a five hour drive home..
hmmm at a loss now
idk why it would see 3 usb "bcm2835" but not see any mmal cameras
We had 1 inch snow last night, schools are closed today.
sometimes I feel like they want to use up all their "snow" days just like that... it was a little slippery, but not dangerous enough to close schools.
yup - it is not like we are "new" to snow. I know some southern states, they get screwed if it snows all of a sudden - like in Atlanta a couple of years ago, they had snow, and traffic stopped for 14 hours
Lol wtf
still weird how many people have no idea how to drive in snow
@clear ferry is that a freeway?
LMAO yep if it rains 0.2 inches, drive slow and carefully on radio for hours 🙂
they got snow in arizona I think not too long ago, I think it was the first time in like many years. was mostly around the hills ect not where people live i think though
@clear ferry tiny, looks smaller than surface streets 🙂
@clear ferry this is what I am talking about https://www.cbsnews.com/news/atlanta-other-parts-of-south-paralyzed-by-ice-snowstorm/
"99 school buses filled with kids were still on the road at midnight. At least 2,000 other students spent the night at school"
Yep that was epic
not much snow on the ground
Your footsteps reminds me of @clear ferry
our front yard - all the snow on the road and driveway is already melted

@tidal bronze if you don't have the bird in that image, you can make people believe that is the flight traffic across the globe 🙂
all foot steps look like little airplane images
@last plaza what camera is that, that not only has the temp but feels like? lol
Ah huh, I see your fancy OSD sir @last plaza
I pair my cameras with xiaomi motion sensors
this is the code for OSD -> https://github.com/skalavala/mysmarthome/blob/master/packages/cameras.yaml#L848-L889
oh you pipe directly into HA? no NVR?
yup
I have a NAS that does all the recording
That reminds me need to get more licences for Synology and remove the HIK NVR at home.
HA connects directly to the camera and gets the snapshot instantly in case of any motion, and I also store recorded video to my NAS using surveillance station
I never used NVR - just plain old IP cameras and NAS
I have 6 on Synology and 14 on HIK
I like how you took the time to put ascii art in your config lol
I need to get a few more cameras this summer - will need to run extra wiring around the house
Syno does much better on dynamic stream adjustment on mobile app than HIK NVR
@forest edge when I open the code in vscode, on the right hand side, I can see the text overlay as a big font, and I can quickly scroll through the code
@tidal bronze do you use vmobile app from qnap? that's not bad
I use the syno DS Cam app. 10x better than HIK app
Live scrolling back and forth is awesome.
I see. not a big fan of vmobile interface - especially when it comes to scrolling through recorded snippets
that's nice! I finally freed space on my NAS last week when I got an extra 10TB hard drive. It was running hot for a few months and CPU was almost 95% constantly
ffmpeg does use cpu when it does the conversion
you running ffmpeg for CC in the NAS?
Why the conversion. Should be 264+ or 265 native
ffmpeg is the process that takes up most of the CPU - I don't think I am saving it as native - I need to check
Update the firmware on cams. 264+ should be already there and 265 would be much smaller file size
hmm... I am always scared of updating firmware on these cameras
I am using H.264 compression
possibly because of high-resolution
Set the video mode on 1 camera to 264+, reboot, see if the NAS recognizes the stream.
hmm.. let me check... 🤞
BTW change to VBR as well. I see all are at a constant 6mb
Yep
VBR is already set
VBR on the NAS side as well.
I have ROI set up right now, I may lose that functionality...
I don't see a VBR setting on my NAS
If you are using it extensively then ..... Technically if your profile is spot on, NAS can override those settings and change on the fly excluding encode type.
see the difference now... you can tell which camera I made the change
#BlueIrisMasterRace
BTW let NAS handle ROI and not the camera unless you are getting HIK triggers direct from camera.
yeah - I am okay not having ROI for now - it was a pain in the butt to set it up anyway
264+ should reduce file size about 30%
wow! hopefully there won't be any loss in quality
yes
@rain swift running NVR on windows ? 2003?
I was asking whether it's year 2003 ? 🤣
it blows any dedicated NVR box you'll buy out of the water.
I could run 40 1080p cams at 20fps on that box
and it's like a $500 dell
I'm happy with it lol
Wonder why no one uses that at enterprise level......But it's good for you then more power to you
holy crap, the blueiris licenses are cheap - up to 64 licenses for $69.95
I paid close to $75 per camera for qnap
I don't get the blue iris fad
it's like a dedicated fan base, you'll see the same people with problems defend it lol
if you are satisfied, that's all it matters - there is always some kinks with any product
"my blueiris dosen't work but it's the best there ever was!"
lol

you could always blame it on windows 8.1
@tidal bronze all cameras are switched to H.264+ with smart codecs, and everything is functioning normally everywhere NAS, HA...etc 🎉
Last time I used a windows based DVR 2001 before embedded linux systems started showing up.
except... it broke the HLS streaming to chromecasts
damn it! let me restart docker containers and see if it fixes it
Get the QNAP RTSP out for HLS
quad breaks people's setups tonight at 11
yup - restarting docker container fixed the problem
quad is the idea guy! he had so many ideas past years that shaped what we have in HA today - including camera streaming and all
its amazing what a reboot does
who has problems?
I only ever see dumb people who don't know what they are doing have problems with it
that doesn't mean its a product issue
@brisk glen BTW got a SHD to test at home. AP AC LR still way better on range. 🙂
why don't people use it at the enterprise level? why do people use red hat instead of something else? support, someone to point the finger at, covering their own asses, you know this.
Credits to Microsoft for democratizing restart process to masses
I never have any issues with my BI, I haven't touched the config in years.
Specs at 400' Vs 600' on LR
machine only gets rebooted for windows updates.
And there youhave it
its not my fault dumb people have issues. 😆
yah...
where's @clear ferry
drivving his grocery getter through the snow

Did someone say proper enterprise hardware
Or are you just playing big boys with shitty SMB stuff?
@rain swift it must be prefect for you but enterprise surveillance systems can't have even few seconds of downtime, forget about windows reboots. BI must be ideal for home use but far, very far from being the master race.
they were suppose to make a linux version of it but couldn't figure out how
It ain't a proper surveillance system until you have 7 racks of servers and storage anyway 😛
Transatlantic, live in Europe, we all need some light,
It's a shame there doesn't seem to be a good open source linux NVR solution
Who wants to mess with a windows 10 vm just to record cameras
Don't mind me, I'm just building a pizza oven to boil a cup of water
lol there are tons of good open source NVR's
good though?
Ehh
Jenkins lasted a while
@brisk glen wtf
That little video sums up the new sonic movie
@tidal bronze have you used kerberos
yes some time ago
@tidal bronze have you tried kerberos.io?
👆 😄
Best open source one 'I' have tested.
It’s so like wtf
Stunned
something tells me he chucked it back to the chicken for them to kill it after he stopped recording
I don't know if shinobi is any good or not
Kerberos looks like the typical "developer who does the design" scenario 🤢
https://twitter.com/i/status/1232737168315109376 now here's a coronavirus meme lol
Sure, buy an Enterprise system and pay hundreds of dollars for per cameras licence lol
Sigh
@tidal bronze kerberos looks good so far. only thing is you need to run multiple instances of containers for each camera and you will have multiple administration dashboards 😦
:o
@last plaza - Yeah, it all makes me want to build my own. In fact, I kinda sorta already started... but then life happened.
@humble pond it is super easy
@last plaza I do like the concept of container per camera.
Nope. They did that so you can’t manage it all together without $$
yep - I wish they use one admin dashboard, and multiple containers for each camera
yup - their so called commercial version pulls everything together and it costs 💰
Money or not brilliant implementation
The one I was working on is for the Jetson Nano I have lying around and builds in object detection on top of motion.
Was going to try and improve upon my current HASS image processing implementation and have it run native on a dedicated device, but also build VMS capabilities into it.
I got maybe 20% done though, so yeah. It takes time and $$ is worth time 😂
just steal it 🤣
A NVR is a pretty complex application
It'd be a big task
I don't mind paying a reasonable sum of money for something that is decent for SOHO use
Blue Iris but runs in a container would be ideal
It all depends on how much is riding is on the footage. There are some things that's worth paying for. 😀 Been involved in surveillance for a long time. People always want the cheapest wat out. When shit happens, that's when they spend the right amount on the upgrade. It's like having an alarm/fire system that's not centrally monitored.
I don't understand how they want to make money off of an open source implementation - everyone contributes, only a few makes money. Devs are losers in this model.
Then there's that
starting to snow again 😦
I would lose the open source requirement for a paid option
Kind of an either or scenario
But yeah businesses should be having the whole thing done by a managed service provider
But for home use, eh
There's a gap
I kinda like that it allows you to integrate when motion detected - like mqtt, gpio, calling script...etc
In film and television I used plently of $60-$150 pieces of software with much much smaller target markets than SOHO users that want surveillance. So there has to be some viability in it
Shinobi Pro is free for non commercial, maybe I'll have a look into it
Lol just watched a youtube on installing shinobi on docker
The guy said "not gonna lie it was actually a really install, I'd say easier than a normall installation of shinobi "
That's kind.. of the point of docker :D
got it
nvr with motioneye with 2 servers streaming from the same cameras
i use blue iris for my main camera software
unifi protect 😛
but im using a pi zero as a "spy cam" for the basement, cause we noticed our dryer sheets being used faster then they should
we co own the duplex with my inlaws
yeah in the process of doing motioneye
then have motion eye on something more powerful and record on motion
well im wanting to install motion and motioneye and sich, and then im going to just have it output into my BI installation
it can take damn near any ip stream
that should be fine
just make sure you x264
H.264 is hardware acell on the pi, uses far less network resources and helps a lot on that extremely limited io chipset
should be able to possibly pull 720p
lol
got it down to 800x600
and im getting like maybe 10 fps
lol
maaaaaaybe ill just try using a pi3b+
lol
@brisk glen how can you make sure to use x264?
you use fast network mode on the rpi0
it sets it up to be a stream and nothing else automatically
that in the config?
oh if you didn't install motioneyeos then your boned
i used rasbian with motioneye on top
yup gl
it's catered for it
ill try again then
i had it installed earlyer
camera wasnt being recognized
so maybe now it's working in raspbian
i can use meos
ill try
if the camera is plugged in while the os is being setup it should automatically set it up
yeah it didnt before for some reason
but it's working in raspbian so ill try again
tiny img at like 60 mb
compared to full rasp
hmm, gets warm dont it, lol
so how do you use fastnetwork mode?
@forest edge
nvm
@jade tartan here is how I did mine. https://www.awesome-automations.com/blog/diy-surveillance/ I use RPi and a web cam
I use plain old motion
well my only issue just now was the fps was horrid
so im wondering if i just use a pi 3b+ if that would just be better
Must be camera limitation. One of my old web cam is limited in FPS, and another is limited in resolution.
1080p30
is it not a csi camera?
is
Could be rather than must be 😊
then fast network is what you want
i did
fucked something up though, LOL
cause it rebooted and i see nothing on the ip now
it's connected but no http server is poping up
well i got 3 of them running 1080p at 30 fps all day long so I know it can do it 😉
on a zero?
rpi0 w
well if it's the first variation of the csi camera then that would be the issue as well lol
first camera modules they came out with were junk
yup
anything under a v2 were bad
you still want to use fast network mode but you won't get no high res with decent fps
do like a 1024x720 or something
with like 25 fps
hmm
cause this isnt the official one i dont think
that one
uhhh
so i put in the google.com,500,5000, and sich it was empty
whats the motion binary fields default value?
so it looking like that is fine?
cause thats how it was when i started
i clicked FNC tho
but the reds were there
did it have access to the internet during setup?
i would assume as i did my wpa_supplicant file
and it connected to my network
can you check your default value for that field for motion binary?
i would assume the date shit really doesnt matter but the directory to the binary might be needed
well you had a screwy install or something. that field is /usr/bin/motion
ok i put that in
apply
and now it's gona reboot
and not be available like last time i bet
yep
didnt work
you got a screwy install or screwy something
reboots and then who knows, it comes back on network but i cant reach it through web browser
which makes no sense as it's a fresh img file downloaded
and flashed with etcher
and then put in the zero
makes no fucking sense
not really not 30fps
by the time you factor in cost of all the parts and dealing with housing the thing, it's not that impressive at all lol
Never quite got the point of rpi cameras
well when they first came out it was the cheapiest network wifi camera you could diy
yea not so much today
but it is one of the more stable options today
one thing I cannot fault is how reliable mine havve been
PoE for lyfe :D
❤️ poe
Unless you're renting, it's always worth it to run a cable
And a cat6 cable will still most likely be good enough for cameras in 2045
I'm a licensed installer, I know what cat5 and cat6 can do ;)
you poor soul
I haven't run cat5 in like 10 years?
I wouldn't run cat5, cat5e sure but not cat5 lol
Everyone just calls cat5e cat5 now
It's just assumed
But cat6 has more margin for error, and less IR loss for power
my house is ran with cat5e cause the roll was free when i ran it
I get gigabit speeds cause the runs are short enough, all i care about lol
Was it free because no one would bother installing it anymore
nah military had oodles and didn't care lol
Cat5e is 100m
For gigabit
Which is shitloads
Bigger than any realistic run in a house
Cat6 is also 100m at gigabit
not 100% what my longest run is but it's nowhere near over 300ft and it's not 100% stable
Hence the cat6 having more margin for error
For installer error :D
Crimping, kinking, tight bends, lousy connectors, long jacket strip length, cross talk, interference
All things that take a stab at the performance
Which is why I would never recommend cat6 for 10gbe
Especially without proper certification
How would you know
and my shit is intertwined with power romex and ran behind microwaves lol
I've tested my lines several times
With what?
I have an old cable signal tester
reads the noise levels
and my cat5e has little shielding
You have shielded cat5e?
the whole interference thing is overrated
the inner core has a liner yes
pretty sure it's shielding, maybe it's just for pull strength lol
I don't recall foil, which is why i'm thinking it's not shielding, i recall a fiber like sheething
I don't have a piece that dosen't have an end crimped on
to look
only regret is I wish I had ran lines to way more places than I did
cause I only ran lines to rooms, would have liked to ran one to garage ect as well
hindsight plus wasn't really thinking outside the box when I did all that
Can you run more cables now?
Looks interesting -> https://gravitational.com/blog/enhanced-session-recording/
@hushed basalt nah everything is in walls and was put up before sheetrock
@forest edge shame
Most houses in my state are double brick
Horrible for performance, but you can fish cables through them relatively easily
Could you use something like this to drill through the horizontal blocking
This is really clever too
I have uninterrupted leads back to a patch panel in a closet. I wouldn't try and tie into another line even if I had one in an accessible location lol
As in new leads
Without seeing the actual building plans, and making a general assumption, how do mains circuits generally work?
my socket can handle roughly 3,000W I believe, with an either 13A or 20A max depending how the switches work behind the wall
but is that 3,000W for the entire floor, house or just the socket? how do you even determine a floor's or house's maximum wattage
Depends on where you are in the world too 😉
Mains voltage and wiring layout plays a big role
UK uses a ring layout, where multiple sockets in multiple rooms connect to the same breaker. Other countries go more for a direct approach (one breaker, one socket/room)
I'm in the UK, so is that 3000W per floor then...? As a general rule ofc as I don't have building plan access
Check the circuit board
The socket is good for 13A max, the ring will handle whatever the max is at the circuit board
Some specialist connections, like for an oven or boiler, will have a higher draw, but you won't find a socket there unless the electrician was an idiot
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_circuit gives a good high level intro to the theory, but theory and reality often diverge when it comes to house wiring, unless your house has been brought up to a modern standard recently (and done so by those who know what the standards are)
Everything you need to know though about the maximums is at the circuit board - such as whether you've got an 80A, 60A, or 100A (typically) main fuse
lol a literal ring. thats nuts
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_wiring_in_the_United_Kingdom gives a good intro to why
in 1944 determined that the ring final circuit offered a more efficient and lower cost method to support a greater number of sockets
amongst other things
Oh, so that's why brittons have to put a fuse in EVERYTHING instead of just using one and having a safe socket instead?
its nuts cause it introduces an extra level of danger, thus the need for the extra fuses lol
Ireland has the same system. No more dangerous than any other system, and having the correct fuse close to the device is probably a good thing.
We also get nice 13A/230V which means we have drive devices with much much higher wattage requirements 😄
Just under 3000W 😄
Even in modern builds, it's still a ring ciruit, although these days it's usually a circuit per room.
them plugs are fugly tho
Yeah, but they don't work loose without a lot of effort
Help! My wireless adapter on my desk is failing
So I need a good solution to get wireless on my desktop
Does anyone know of a good solution. Some usb adapter on an extension mount?
Network cable...
Cries in rental
Anyone else?
British plugs are pretty superior though I'll admit
Having everything right angle flush mounted design, I'd kill for that
Better than everything being straight molded and needing about 8 inches of clearance from furniture and appliances
Americans have fuses in the sockets????
also my house was built in 2006/2007
but by people with no real building experience lol
So is no one running a desktop off wireless?
apparently Americans don't have toggles on their sockets?? that's so odd
@hushed basalt I did for a good few months
I had a D-Link 802.11ac receiver plugged in into PCIe (its still there, I use Ethernet now though)
There is no point in comparing American cards rest of the world. Everything in Murcia is different.
For a start, it comes with extra
Even before that before I had any wireless or Ethernet I tethered my phone (wifi) through a USB cable which worked fine even for online gaming like gtao
@last plaza cards?
damn auto correct.
If we could go back in time
We should make the whole world 240v 60hz with british plugs but without the fuse
Just standard circuits like civilized people
seems like i remeber when getting my degree the civiled people are the ones that invented alternating and hell dc current as well
i dont think you got my slightly smart ass remark 🤣
Who are the civilized ones?
.f2c 21
21 degrees fahrenheit = -6.11 degrees celsius!
Hmm that's cold
.f2c 12
12 degrees fahrenheit = -11.11 degrees celsius!
that's what it feels like
I'm short so I'm closer to the ground where it's warmer
So I have to adjust for that
last year or so, it went to -20F here. that's when your balls will be frozen
.f2c -20
-20 degrees fahrenheit = -28.89 degrees celsius!
yup
we haven't even broken -20C here this year. It's been weird
the forecast for the night is -25 tho
if they hadn't screwed Tesla we'd all be using wirelessly transmitted DC power, so, there's that.
I'm short so I'm closer to the ground where it's warmer
I never thought that way, not that I am short, I am 6' give or take.
It's a joke ;)
Although meteorology sensors are at precise heights, distance from objects and shading etc
Does this mean tat my 20 Esp-home devices are now a rather serius problem?
afaik almost all my devices in the home lan do not use ssl encryption 😓
🤔
your hass instance isn't running ssl?
tl:dr
What was the gist of the vulnerability?
We're already supposed to act like our local network is compromised anyways right?
there's a vulnerability in the handshake between the AP and the client that allows someone to grab their key
and masquerade
so its only an issue if someone is in physical range
possible, but not near as likely unless you live near a college with comp sci nerds lol.
I don't worry about that type of stuff as much
that said I'd kinda like to set up something to send me an alert when a new mac address appears on my network
As long as esp stuff is in a restricted vlan should not be a problem.
we shall see after I get my new firewall monday.
@last plaza -20 ain't bad unless you're by the coast, we usually have -35c here in winter, I go out in my t-shirt, but if I go home to the coast -12c will kill me
Anybody else got logged out of discord Android client last night?
we have a lake here - we get that "lake effect" drops temps even below
We live by the biggest River in Norway, we get humid weather in summer, but winter isn't much affected
Vets should be regulated. This shit is unreal.
Getting an ultrasound done for a dog is not an easy task.
All of my dogs got insurance. That's not the issue it's the practice.
2 days and the bill so far is $4800
pow
i have been throu so many struggles with wifes cancer and etc .....i just have only given hope to having enough money each payday to make it
Honestly the pet insurance is a joke. Much better to put money aside than paying for insurance. Pay upfront and 80% coverage, yep it's little funny.
As they get older rates go up significantly. I think monthly for 3 dogs is about $300
damn that is crazy
Given I have large dogs but still. Nuts.
well i have known the vets family since i was a child and he will do payments ....but if i have too i will bring whole check to him if needed
Same here, they are my life. Hopefully cali will be the first state to regulate this stuff. Not let them run wild.
yep sadly a dog will love ya regardless of anything....they only consider what you give them ...you give them love and they give it back ......skinny fat tall short they dont care
Been at this place since 4AM waiting for the internist, its 9 still not here. Going to blow a gasket in a few.
no shit
@tidal bronze wow, the prices for vets is pretty steep here too, but I think if you have insurance they cover up to $10000 per year, which will get you a long way, ultrasound would be no where near those prices though
what's up with the pooches?
Oh they have changed it here now
All bills are covered in the lifetime of the dog
Including cremation
Got to do a prostate scan. @last dirge
at least buy me a drink first
@clear ferry there is no limit here. I am not worried about the cost, just the practice sucks.
The price appears to be a one time payment here, the most expensive dog is $550 for lifetime insurance
Norway sounds pretty awesome
@tidal bronze but that is true for anything medical related over there 👍
Norway sounds pretty awesome
@last dirge
Come on over
We love nerds, you can work with @light trout doing code
@clear ferry sadly yes. Damn leeches
the guy who cuts my hair just spent $4,000 on his cat - the cat drank bleach in the laundry room when he is not home. How the heck one can afford to spend that much money on the pets!
I have hip replacement coming up for a rescue 12k
You guys get hair cuts ?
😮
how many medical advances come out of norway though?
@rain swift quite a few
usually these socialist medicine countries get all of their innovation from us.

medical field is an extremely complex subject - regulations are not great. If you are a middle class or lower, you are screwed anyway
medical advances funded by government grants that get exclusive patents to rake patients over the coals
but sure, let's pretend there's a reason other than that for advancement in the US
@clear ferry everything that matters only.

exceptionalism's a strange bird
Does anyone happen to know where to get a 8-12" 1000 nit touch display for a fairly cheap price? There are some sellers in Ali, but nothing on Aliexpress and I can't seem to find any european shops selling these
I have such a stupid question
I'm almost embarrassed to ask
Will the button on this let me manually switch it on and off?
Going to install it on a lamp but don't want to piss off housemates with no way for them to control!
Yea
Thank fuck haha
Had this horrible sinking feeling "oh no I've messed up, they're going to kill me"
Housemates 🤢
discord newb here ... where do I find a message sent by a specific user?
he wrote me directly not in the channel
Click the left top corner
And the top button
All direct messages are there
If you are on Android 😩

You can edit your messages on discord, or this
I'll consider myself dead only when I stop learning new things 🙂 thank you very much from Rome
I'll change employers when I do 💩
may I ask for whom you work?
I've been working in the same company for 34 years now .. nwver stopped learning (and do not have that much managers above me eh eh)
I used to have 14 managers between me and the managing director, now I have 6 I think
how much is a house there?
@golden zephyr living in the city 🤢
@last dirge way too much
Pretty close to @scenic radish estimate
For something that can barely fit 1 person that is
@scenic radish where i live, about 2 million
😱
I considered buying an apartment in London, but I've moved on
Living in the city is only good for short trips and for that I have mostly subsidized apartments I can use
So rather a cottage in Somerset for me later
@golden zephyr Kensington area?
@scenic radish I want to build a Bellamy like guitar with a kaosspad, let's make a muse cover band
A wild tinkerer suddenly appears and just
i'm not nearly as good of a drummer as Dom, but i'm in
Hewlett Packard 🤢
Make it more enterprise @forest edge
@clear ferry what's your server OS of choice nowadays
@hushed basalt personal or work? Hypervisor or bare metal?
🐻 metal
Debian, always
Does debian have working local name resolution
You mean DNS?
You know how ubuntu has that weird thing where it thinks it's special

And won't use your lan's dns to look up
Ubuntu suffers from systemd though, doesn't it
I have no idea
I mean, the answer is, don't use anything that uses systemd... 😛
Basically on every other computer on my lan, I can just ping hostnames or hostname.local
mdns
And they take the dns from their dhcp info given by my router
mDNS is what happens when people think you need random reliability
Which has my router as the dns server, which will resolve the hostnames
But ubuntu doesn't do any of that
I love something that might resolve hostnames on Tuesdays between four and six, if it's raining
Can I have that @clever mortar ?
I can't even find a good explaination online why ubuntu does it
I'm pretty sure that systemd will deliver that soon @clear ferry
Plus every "fix" i see online is a bunch of hacky hack hacks
Get out

So debian will actually do as it's told and use the dns server for resolutions?
I don't know about mDNS, no sane person relies on that
That's still mDNS
Even without the .local?
Well either that or PFM
I thought mDNS was exclusive for .local
I figured my router's dns was resolving it?
It might be - ask it and see
i thought atx preferred macos server 🤔
Lemme just telnet in 🤭
nslookup is maybe not your friend, but if you talk nicely to it it may help you
ARP 42 Who has Tinkerer? Tell Tediore
de:ad:be:ef:ca:fe @scenic radish
$ nslookup norwats
Server: 192.168.x.x
Address: 192.168.x.x#53
Name: norwats
Address: 192.168.x.41
From a raspbian
There you go, it's the curse of systemd
So debian doesn't use systemd?
I haven't seen it refuse to use the configured DNS server, even on Debian 10
Of course, it may also be a layer 8 issue 🤷
But if ubuntu and debian both use systemd, and systemd is causing the problem on ubuntu
Why would there be a difference?
Yeah, but doesn't mean they're using the same version, or configured in the same way
@clear ferry what's your mailing address? Got a little gift for you.
eel jello?
It's another staple food...
that isn't food
Help you get more iron in your diet
looks like something that would cleanse your colon
I still don't understand all this systemd resolvd stuff 🤷♂️
I think it's to do with single label names using LLMNR
Instead of JUST DOING AS YOU'RE TOLD AND USE THE DNS SERVER ON THE INTERFACE
I guess i need to learn all this Linux networking stuff
But man they make it obtuse
The native, fully-featured API systemd-resolved exposes on the bus. See the API Documentation[1] for details. Usage of this API is generally recommended to clients as it is asynchronous and fully featured (for example, properly returns DNSSEC validation status and interface scope for addresses as necessary for supporting link-local networking).
@clear ferry I'm using hyper-v for the first time
Just thought you'd want to know
And.... it's already crashed
Sabnzbd amongst aws-cli and docker
Must be such a professional OS :D
