User to be cool late 90's never been back since moving to LA, no need when Vegas is 45 minutes out.
I was supposed to play a concert in Vegas 5 years ago, but it got cancelled
Even vegas is eh for me now. Just go there for buffet or buffets
I just want to go there to see it, then I'm done probably
Indeed! Eat till you drop.
Zzzz still 25 minutes till boarding
Munch on 2 more tasteless items at lounge. 😂
Like my sense of humor?
I just wanna get on the flight so I can nap a bit, my daughter kept me awake for a few hours
I have lost track of wake/sleep hours now. Zombie mode most of the time.
I did that before I had a kid
Now I just need to sleep

The soulless eyes of @tidal bronze in zombie mode

I hear you. Next few weeks going to be crazy. Close to 18 or 19 flights. I am going to loose it.
That sounds awful
I'm gonna have one per week for a few weeks, though that was enough
I'm good with maybe one per year
Flying to Norwat you say @scenic radish ?
Now I feel for my buddy thats been doing 6 flights a week for past 15 years. Of course a million mile flier but...... Oh boy.
short plane rides are fine but even medium ones I hate
May 🇧
I just hate...lack of legroom
Super cool to have million mile status.
I paid for the wing seats with more legroom last trip I took and it was so so worth it
Then he got engaged and wanted to work from home more, think he reduced to 100 days travel per year and lost $60k per year
I wouldn't call it cool per se...
@ocean mirage do you have legs the length of Italy?
idk how big is italy
Trust me the perks you get is unreal @ocean mirage
I trust you
im not sure their purpose for flying but either way it seems a bit of an excessive luxury
Yeah, he had platinum in every airline imaginable, and did lot of cool stuff on land and sea platforms, but I could never do that much travel
you are from norwat you must be tall right
I tower above Americans if that is what you mean
im like 193 I think
Fnap
@clear ferry yep elite status on any airline. Never pay for a ticket pretty much.
I'm only 185
I'd still expect that would not be the most comfortable
but its the last cm or two that really gets my knees digging into the chair in front
And I'm fat as heck
183
Tallest American I know then @scenic radish
🏆
When I was in Georgia I met noone that was above 175
175 lbs ?
Damn muuricans so tiny wow
hah
I lie though, I did see two guys in the office that was 210 and looked like shaq
I so badly want to get a drink with shaq
I used to be 85kgs, then I lived one year in Ireland and came home 120
I'm still around 120
heh
@clear ferry said Georgia and no one above 175 I was like WTH ? 😃
🙉
Good night all
I did get down to around 100, but I bounced back up
Yep night.

I once did a poop while playing on the Nintendo Wii balance board
And it thought I was a new player when I returned

hahahaha
True story too
I never found out the variable, but it must have been like 3kgs
Shit of a lifetime
thats...too high lol
you ever weigh yourself before and after a shit
intentionally
Nope
its normally a smaller number than you think
But in the past I usually did a number two twice a week
But I got my stomach sorted, so now I do it daily
The size of a baby Joey!
crikey!
im daily, usually on work time
I think a lot of people would benefit from reducing gluten intake at least
I can't do dairy,
And I don't think I have the genetics to handle gluten
I think my dads heritage was closer to rice and ancient grains,
So never had that euro tolerance
I don't do well with heaps of either but moderation is fine
are you fine with alcohol?
I can't have beer and such
Wine and vodka is okay
Although I mostly have wine or cider almost exclusively
beer makes me feel sick
You are a little freak @hushed basalt
but some people cant break down alcohol properly
I suspect my liver doesn't like it haha
I'm pretty sure I've taxed my liver on panadol too much on a few occasions
That's Tylenol for murrricans
Or paracetamol for eu people
What about rice beer?
Can't say I've tried any
There is a few
I drink so little I don't mind
I'd much rather just drink white wine or cider anyways, and wine is pretty cheap here
"civilised" drinks get taxed a lot less
I drink maybe 1 beer a month on average at home
:o
If I travel with overnight stays I drink a lot
In France I get the house wine, €1 for 0.7
A house white at a pub/restaurant would cost you about $24
In Norway, about $70
USD?
Yes
Yeesh
A beer out is like $7-12
You should just move to France and work "from home" with your Norwegian salary
Beer out is about $10-14 for a pint
Lol, had a previous collegue do that, from Prague
One of the lead devs in Perth I know is moving to London
:/
I mean I know he's getting paid a good chunk more, but his cost of living will go uppppppppppp
Insane would be more accurate 😛
Then you add in the transport costs, and wonder why anybody would want to put themselves through that
I'm still looking for something interesting around Somerset though, but buying is a few years off 😛
Also welcome back

And for brexit to complete
Your fire reminded me of Popululus
Or whatever that game was called
Oh... I remember that, vaguely
When you were in your mid 40s it was released

Zzzz because of the fire in the parking garage I have to be shuttled to the rental cars

im gay
ok
Question for y'all. Anybody setup home assistant on like AWS and setup a VPN to your home network?

I am currently sitting in a house with all the doors and windows open and still sweating at 11.45 pm.... Please swap
We've got about 5 degrees and "breezy" (making it feel about -2)
Window is currently open 😛
It's just raining here 😦
rain is good
Just a few miles down the road: https://twitter.com/CarlowWeather/status/1228008054878343168
More rain tomorrow morning and heavy rain expected on Saturday and Sunday from #StormDennis so risk of flooding over the coming days. https://t.co/rQx2MOsPGJ
oh Ireland? you probably get enough rain
Even got some snow over the week. @clear ferry would probably laugh at what we consider snow, but meh!
I'm not sure people quite understand what the installation channels are for
the thing is that at glance the first "home assistant" channel looks like the old home assistant channel. The installation part is easy to miss there
ola/
I only just discovered that there is a rate limit for mobile app notifications
what up party people.
is here someone good with regexp ? I try to harden my SSH config with ansible and cant find out how I set an optional character that it takes #Port 22 or Port 22
😕
@midnight adder what have you tried?
a lot - most of the time I also capture also #GatewayPorts wich isnt ideal - dream could be a single cahracter long wildcard with the expression behind. for now ^.*?Port
for now on page 26 on https://www.princeton.edu/~mlovett/reference/Regular-Expressions.pdf
just monkeying around in Rexrex tester 🙉
that is the problem, not always - its meight be there meight be not 😛
I guessed so - monkeying is the right word for it probably - first tuches with regexp ever
oh
theyre not as confusing as I heard they where
I feel it 🤣
my earlier question just meant will the value always be at the start of the line
oi @clever mortar do you watch Taskmaster?
I don't
I just stumbled across it on YouTube and it's quite good
yea # meight be always only at the start of a line (or not) - but I try to ignore # (<- mind the space) as well
^#?fred
Will match either of the first two, but not the others
fred
#fred
# fred
#fred
@midnight adder look at groupings
the dot operator is greedy
so .* will do a LOT of crap you don't want it to do
I don't often say this, but perl is handy there as you can make it non-greedy
aahhh - neat - thanks - tryed 2 hours around 🙈
I had my fun with the greedy ones already.
Bueller?
Wasnt perl that language wich want to make the programmer happy?
@low harness Lots of large sites still running on mod_perl. I know of two large insurance companies using them. The Register also uses it: https://www.theregister.co.uk/about/company/website/
I'm not sure about love...
sympa stil is driven by perl
has been known to be useful in edge cases
Hell, half the internet is probably held together by tiny little perl scripts which no one can read anymore, but if removed will take out BGP for whole countries/continents....
That’s the same reason cobol programmers are in such high demand.
remindes me - commandline heros got a new season
@low harness There's a friend of my Uncle's in Toronto who is at retirement age but gets thrown large lumps of cash to stay employed maintaining Cobol at a large Finance house. According to her, a lot of time it's not the Cobol language that's the problem, they can hire people who understand it. What drives staff away is the change control enforced on the code as there really can't be errors when dealing with properly large transactions.
who needs unit tests though?
The change control for some components includes mathematicians and accountants verifying the logic.
here a proper text output for sucessful tests 😛

Yet another day of business travelling closing up, flight home in 3 hours, so time for some admin work at the airport
what youre admining @clear ferry
Hours, travel expenses, new flight bookings, follow up the 200 mails I haven't been able to read today
national or international?
Mostly national
"domestic"
I'd hate new bookings regardless but on international flights it would be a nightmare.
Sorry Brian, domestic is indeed what I meant.
We call it national in my native language , so it made sense to me
Or 'innlands' and 'utlands'
utc+1 ?
Sounds like svensk ish
Close, Nørwëgiån
Same but then oil money and butter
poor guy - up into the weekend at around 11PM?
too long ago that the butter was black market warez in Norway and people were driving to SWE to get some?
That was fun times
Yikes, totally spaced out about Valentine's day, finding a place now..... Hmmm🙄 🤔
Repercussions of dismissing calender events rather than snoozing. 😂
HAH here valentines day is about the woman giving gifts to love interest(s).
suffice to say I didn't get any chocolate from the wife 😦
Guess I'll rub it in on white day
White day?
White chocolate 🤢
travel expenses 🤢
the expense cannot be submitted before a matched card transaction is loaded
I don't interact as much as just do magic for people

no worky! damn you android client that looks like desktop client
I like the new feature of the chromebook where it uses the mobile data of the android phone
instead of creating a hotspot etc
much smoother
yeah that is very nice
too bad i can never get smart lock to work on the damn chromebook
it works for like a day and then never again
known issue apparently
same here
it worked fine on stable branch
but when I moved to dev it was like
mmhhhhmmmm
i'm on stable, no luck
i used to be on beta, then the ability to open more than one terminal window stopped working
🤣
Well, excuuuuuse me, princess!
I never saw that version of zelda
You didn't miss anything
reminds me I need to rewatch the animated LOTR though
I kind of hope they fired whoever decided that should be Links catch phrase... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ac1EdA_QKxI

It used to be a part of the Mario Brothers sitcom thing.

@low harness yeah, one could argue there's no point in emoting old comments, but meh, I still do it.
also I'm OCD and like to read everything from the red line of where I left off.
unless it's like, a ridiculous amount.
For the Proxmox users, using Ubiquiti - Is there a suggested way of installing UniFi on Proxmox? ^^ (still very new in all of this! Installing ubuntu server just for the ubiquiti feels a bit overkill?)
Like, I heard some people suggesting against LXC?
@ruby mauve the controller?
Proxmox 🤢
it can run on anything
I ❤️ my unifi setup
Hat trick
Run it on a toaster...
In think I have a Linux script called toaster
hold on.. let me shove a pi in a toaster and make it smart
The controller, ya
Got it on a RPi right now, but moving everything to something a bit more powerful (not for unifi itself xD)
Am trying out the LXC thing now, following a youtube guide. Let's see how it turns out ^^
I loved it.. Till they dropped the nerdy aspects of it
And went all family and babies and whatever
@ruby mauve linuxserver/unifi-controller
I liked it alright, but without a laugh track it's really bad
Bernadette was hot, so I didn't care when the wife put it on lol
I do have the ability to just accept it instead of nitpicking :p I mean, I doubt a real "nerdy" show would do too good outside of youtube.
^ is true.
Atx hates everything @ruby mauve, don't take it personally lol
The computer chronicles, the only nerdy show I accept
atxblyat is some 70 years grumpy old man, finds everything from 10 years ago much better and throws the money around with his 10k€ monthly income expecting everyone to live like that
However, at the time there wasn't any Star Trek going on! Well.. Maybe the JJ Trek, which has some weird fertish for Beastie Boys.
Only 10k @boreal pewter ?
I'm so sad I missed Babymetal in Denmark.. like two weeks back.
They're in Manchester on the 22nd though.. It's only like a one hour flight! So tempted.
I have two upcoming concerts next week, doubt I'll be allowed any more this quarter 😛
Atleast three more weeks of one day travelling out of town by plane too
I'll be a avis preferred plus soon
Small plane today
Your plane seems to laying on its side. You should look into debugging that.
is that an airbus?
So I'm in Antarctica. UTC+5 is strange on the forums. Can access my home assistant dashboard fine, looks like the house sitter has turned off a few of my smart lights 🙄 Don't yet have access to my home servers due to corporate firewall blocks but hope to have that resolved. What'd I miss?
They have a man in the middle proxy to log https traffic. Most apps are smart enough to spot the faked certs and refuse to connect
that's a french company, isn't it?
@young sigil Impressive
@last dirge canadian
But these are sold off to mitsubishi it seems
indirectly french
How do you guys do VMs btw? Do you do one VM per thing you want installed - ending up with a lot of small ones, or do you do several things per VM? Like I had PiHole, Unifi controller, and RetroPie on the Pi3b+.
i just use docker 😛
.. or that :p Got two VMs up atm (HassOS & PiHole), and one ProxMox container.
VMs add a lot of overhead, so I pack as much as I can into a single one
But if I have the hardware available, ideally you'd stick to the single purpose principle
But they do represent a different unit than say a container
I have indeed noticed that, aye.
Feels like... a lot to use an entire Ubuntu Server install just for PiHole - and even after it's been rebooted and idling for a while it's still using x3 RAM of what the install did on PiB3+/PiZW.
@ruby mauve I did run a esxi cluster at home, now I moved everything to docker, freebsd jails and a single KVM vm
I used to run everything with its own VM for 10 years
Then I found our lord and saviour docker
Now I just manage esxi stuff at work
What's in the VM? Pfsense?
Thinking about it again, you're probably more an iptables/unbound guy, right?
Either that or a dedicated enterprise firewall
No, pfsense for the last 15+ years
Smoothwall before that
Thinking about moving to opnsense because they have native wireguard
On dedicated hardware, then?
Yah, did try to read into / watch videos about dockers, will probably attempt to get a bit more into that. Is Proxmox the "right" solution for that still (or rather, a decent one)?
@ruby mauve proxmox 🤢
Just my opinion since I have not seen a single customer ever run it, while I've seen any other hypervisor you can think of, and most of them are time proven good and have large user bases
[deleted]
Just my opinion since I have not seen a single customer ever run it, while I've seen any other hypervisor you can think of, and most of them are time proven good and have large user bases
@low harness yes, for most of those years, ran virtualized for 4 or so years
I like proxmox. But I'm not an advanced user. I just want something to keep track of a few kvms, and that's not a very hard task.
So KVM with any frontend would have done @low harness ? 😛
yeah
For now, in the process of upgrading my home servers, I'm actually looking for containerized managers.
It seems like that should be a thing
I powered down most of my stuff after I got access to a 33000 device lab 24/7
Flying with SAS, eh? I thought they had a boycut-thing going on after that commercial they threw out xD (ahhh, social media & tabloids <3)
Because some nationalists got offended? No thank you
That's the one! xD It made me giggle quite a lot.
Right sorry, politics - will avoid! ^^

I'm running HA and pihole on their own vm's in virtualbox
i'd combine things that make sense.
Virtualbox 🤢
when you restart HA does it leave your other docker containers working normally?
its been working fine for me.
it was kind of a temp setup when the 2 pis they ran on died that I haven't had a chance to do anything with, I'd like to set up 1 machine as a vm host and move them onto that.
dunno what i'd run on the host though, KVM maybe?
Virtualbox is fine too spin up Isos and to dummy install an os to test something for 5 minutes, wouldn't use it for much more
or just run it like I do now with vbox on ubuntu and make people mad lol
eh, my setup runs 24/7, no issues
I'm not running a datacenter out of the house, and I do computers all day so the only computer related stuff I do at home is things like home automation.
People do other stuff than they work with at home?
The perks of loving what you do 😛
the problems of making your hobby your job
you don't want to do it for a hobby anymore
i mean unless you're just weird. 🙂
I still do after 20 years 😛
and you have a wife?
Yes
interesting
I've been in IT for pretty much my entire career. IT is also one of my hobbies
I always say I feel like the coolest nerd in the room lol
When not acting as family taxi...
I tried out HA on my 1800X through VirtualBox, and it worked well (though to be fair, the performance difference vs. a PiZW was.. negligible - well done btw). But, felt a bit overkill to have it run on my gaming PC, but is why I decided to get something.. bigger, instead of having 2-3 Pi's running.
Ryzen 2200G, 16GB, 500GB m.2 - space for upgrading if need be.
I do some IT things at home, but i'm not sitting there anymore loading up the newest versions of linux distros and crap just to see what they are like.
@rain swift I've got news for you then
I like other things, wet shaving, guns, movies, TV shows, going fun places with my wife, no time to computer nerd 24/7 lol.
I should do something about those 65 vacation days this year
Mmmm world travel with a 16 month old baby 😛
I just bought a couch for $2500, is that redecorating?
It finally started snowing
You seem to have some pixelation or digital noise issues on that there picture.. first a 90° plane, now this! ... also, what is snow?
Something I prefer 4 meters of 😛

Does anyone know when the next community highlights come out?
Probably before the one after that one
...
I'd ask in #general-archived - maybe somebody will know
I've seen nothing to indicate there's a schedule
both the other ones have come out on a friday so i thought another one would come out today

Nice
Nice
Size of my apartment...
I have a ridiculous living room though, it is like 12x4 meters
Or maybe even more
And the upstairs living room is the same size, but with slanted roof
i don't really care for the size of ours, it's a bit too big.. 25x30ft
i feel like the furniture is for giants lol
i guess that's 7.6m x 9m in non freedom units
lol it certainly feels like it
i remember growing up i wanted a room that was just coushins
as an adult, i realize how impractical that is
L O N G B O I
I've got some gigantic IKEA sectional we got a long time ago
Guess it's still cool to live in LA https://www.theverge.com/2020/2/12/21135400/jeff-bezos-warner-estate-expensive-property-david-geffen-amazon😄
So happy that my prime membership is going towards a great cause. 😂
Win-win relationship. You get fast "free" shipping, bezos gets mansions made out of other smaller mansions
Ha ha
165 for 8 acres 🤔 That house was pretty neglected in Gefen days but guess someone painted it up. 😜
Does anyone understand ipv6
I feel like not many people do. Myself included
I'm pretty sure amazon don't make much money from prime subscriptions directly thougg
Fulfilment fees would be their big winner, plus aws
I beg to differ, I can imagine the number of people who pay for prime for that 1 order and idle rest of the year
I guess us Aussies get a better deal
Since it includes free international shipping
I just need to do one medium sized international order a year to get twice my annual subscription back
Plus the ~25 domestic orders a year
But the sellers pay for shipping as well don't forget
Even without prime fees their delivery logistics and seller fees is profitable any day. Prime fees is just icing. The money they dump on prime tv productions, oh boy.
Prime tv would definitely be a loss leader
Close to HBO budjets but no one watches them.
Then again no one can do like HBO does.
amazon probably hates me, I order ridiculous amounts of stuff from them with prime shipping, they must be losing a fortune on me lol.
one item that costs $3 with prime shipping? DONE.
Amazon never loses
They charge the seller shipping, storage and fulfilment charges
Amazon aren't sellers they're a fulfiment centre and an online market place
He's a real sociopath
Hey guys, trying to get into the automation scene but doing research first. Had some questions about what would work best for me. Not sure where to ask them but essentially what I want is a system that:
- Doesn't use alexa/google/etc
- Doesn't need internet (all devices will be on a separate vlan with no internet access)
- Simple to use with ideally 1 app/location to control everything
I think Home Assistant will do all this however, is there a way to tell which devices will support the no internet thing? For example, I was looking into getting a Leviton Decora Wi-Fi dimmer switch but on the integrations page, it mentions controlling it through the MyLeviton API which i assume is a cloud service and therefore not work with no internet.
executive is one of the professions that attract sociopaths and psycho paths
politicians is another big one

@hushed basalt I've worked with IPv6 for 20 years, it still confuses me at times
Also, French cars 🤢
Yes, you just invited the NSA in! National Seaotter Appraisers
In this tutorial for beginners I discuss the structure of the IPv6 address, the network portion, the interface ID, and the network prefix. The function of the different types of IPv6 addresses: global unicast, link-local, unique local, and anycast. How SLAAC works in IPv6 addr...

This session provides an overview of IPv6 and covers key aspects of AWS support for the protocol. We discuss Amazon S3 and S3 Transfer Acceleration, Amazon CloudFront and AWS WAF, Amazon Route 53, AWS IoT, Elastic Load Balancing, and the virtual private cloud (VPC) environment...
@clear ferry i found your video a good intro
But this video is very very good as a follow up
I'm slowly removing IPv4 from my internal network and just using IPv6 where possible to see what happens. So far it has just worked, mainly as I have proper DNS with A and AAAA so when all the traffic is over IPv6 I just remove the A 😄

I started trying to do that 20 years ago, but so few devices supported it
So I just put it off

I still can't get a clear answer on whether I should use SLAAC, Dhcpv6 or both
Depends afaik
Hm. Wonder if I've done something wrong in my VM setup. On the PiZW Home Assistant didn't even max out the RAM (512), and ran just fine.
In the Ryzen VM it's using 90% of 1.5GB. Does it just.. spread to what it has available? Started with 1GB, almost maxed it, increased to 1280.. same. etc. Less disk reading?
@dull chasm what did you get?
So running 9.2.2?
Strang thing is it’s 120 per channel and Yamaha 150 x2 but it seems louder and cleaner with only 2 driven
Not yet 7.2.4
I would leave the mains on aventage better balance, just my 2c
Although ypao should calculate the delay 😄
I am trying this tier one guy at advantage said she should be better with mains on external. Ypao results seem to match she add to raise dB levels of everything on Yamaha
Kinda seems outlaw amps are stronger
Might be the case if you are driving audio primary. AV surround much cleaner on aventage , not only quality DSP timings as well. At least from my tests.
That’s why I was thinking use Yamaha for effects basically
Doesn’t preamp still use dacs for processing
Preouts are identical but if you think about there will be lag through external amp. I am very picky as you know so not the end of the world. 😂
lag in audio is pretty easy to hear so it's not being too picky imo to keep it in mind
Yea I know I’m testing buts seems cleaner now
Amplified signals should be very minimal
I mainly run external amps on zone 2 / 3
Yea I have external on 2 don’t have a three yet
You will 😄
Zone sync is pretty awesome, still baffled how they maintain sync on a open ended system.
Toughest was syncing Chromecasts to AVr zone sync. Drove me nuts for days.
my chromecast seems to vary with sync or maybe it's the AVR that it's connected to, but I never got it working perfectly
The issue with my setup is number of casts and distances. Then I went ahead and added these to drive rock speakers,
Outdoor chrome cast 20+20 amps.
Show off 🤣
Lol not really, sound coming from edge of the property towards the house is awesome
Because usually it's always going from the house outwards.
True good idea
I was going to cram in a sonoff to switch the amp on CC play but idle draw is around 2w on the entire setup left it alone.
Cheapo from Amazon lepy I think. Perfect for pipe music.
I was thinking of getting one chinese amp to run a random speaker here or there but gave up on the idea because I'd have no way to easily turn them on/off
but if it's that little they consume, who cares
right you're powering the CC too
Yea ok I borrow your 36” when ur sleeping
Lmao.
These guys makes some great aesthetically pleasing stuff https://www.sonance.com/outdoor
Does look good hopefully this time next year buying 2 or 3 acres
Cash
I don’t like to owe anybody a damn dime
Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead
What
That site's cert
Oh
So next year you are moving to West coast ? Right on👍 @dull chasm
Yea ok can’t afford ur shit
I am going to treat you to some kale salad and drip coffee 😁
How bout mashed potatoes and beef tip. More up my alley
Gravy is the most important part btw
So you like that gravy huh? Noted 🤣
Yep

i'll never live on the left coast, middle of the country maybe, right coast is getting worse all the time, entire country is going to crap.
North coast?
maybeh
@rain swift which county is this ?
@tidal bronze muuuuurica I believe
Lol. Middle meaning flyover states 🤔
Anyone interested in buying and shipping a google nest hub max to Germany for profit? Google for some reason still doesn’t ship the bigger ones here. Please don’t kill me if this is against the rules of the server didn’t see anything.
They don't sell it in Norway either
But a flight to the UK will be cheaper than shipping tbh
Uk has them afaik
I can get a return flight for €40ish
Have to pay toll either way 😅
No?
Sure
Just have it in your luggage 😛
😂
I never pay toll for anything from abroad
@amber ice toll ? Not in West coast
I bring stuff for €1500 atleast every time I go abroad
We have "freeways" 😄
Everything up of 22 € we have to pay toll, above 150 it gets even more expensive
This oxtail fried rice is off the hook.
We have to, we just don't
I have never paid toll to take anything across the border, ever
I think we are using discord wrong 🤔 https://www.zdnet.com/google-amp/article/uk-police-distance-themselves-from-poster-warning-parents-to-report-kids-for-using-kali-linux/
This is where I get all my hacking tips
last time I went to Europe I brought a Schuko C5 cable for my laptop, I seem to have lost it now
I want to get a good USB C PD power hub for all my travel phone and laptop needs
But there's nothing good out at the moment
C8 power input, 2 x usb C ports with one being at least 60 watts and not too large or heavy
Plus a QC 3 usb A port
I think I'll need to wait for GaN to become mainstream
is there any such thing as airplay for linux?
I don't need rdp/vnc, I want video/audio playback too
and I'd like to have it in a manner of Pc(debian)->rpi(debian) or whatever distro
ok I think I'll try 'parsec' for now
@hushed basalt If you find such a device, please let me know.
Theres a few GaN things on kickstarter but they all have fold out prongs built in
Which I hate
Anyone know where I can find duel gang faceplates like the Martin Jerry single gang?
Anyone ever read some of the patents on google? lol. https://youtu.be/PQImLiRnM10?list=WL
Cut the cord!!! Physiological effects have been observed in a human subject in response to stimulation of the skin with weak electromagnetic fields that are pulsed with certain frequencies near ½ Hz or 2.4 Hz, such as to excite a sensory resonance. Many computer monitors and T...
Does anyone know is wago 221's are rated for mobile use
they are wire connectors. unless your country has some weird wiring codes only wet location and heat are factors outside normal wire connectors
What do you guys use for IPAM, if anything?
@rain swift i used phpIPAM in a docker container before, it was ok but didn't really suite my needs too well
@sour escarp dns stuff pisses me off, I'm running pihole, it does my dns and dhcp, and it works great except for it seems like only some devices pull FQDN's, and when I look in the leases I see a bunch of shit that shows up as "unknown", I can only assume it's due to different standards or something, I have a list of everything with a static IP on the network, and I've started assigning other things DHCP reservations so I know what they are, and I can actually name them in pihole, but damn it's annoying. I have 2 amazon echos and they don't put the mac addresses on the outside, so I dunno which thing they are int he leases lol.
what do ya'll like for thermostats?
i went w/ ecobee but given the API complications (especially as of late) im thinking of selling it
@rain swift if this is just for home, use nmap to search your network, it's an incredibly powerful tool
ipam is really overkill for keeping track of home stuff, you can just use onenote, excel, txt file, etc for that. I run several VLANs and have a lot of devices on my network and don't use IPAM
Lol ipam at home
Even when I still had a /23 network I didn't use it
DHCP reservations was all i needed 🤷
i don't like reservations for everything but they certainly have their place
@sour escarp yes, I ran nmap earlier, I have a tex file lol I was just wondering what other people do.
I've got static IPs configured on all the important stuff, but like, the roku's, the TVs, meh, they are getting reservations, and our cell phones, smart watches, lot of other stuff.
I don't have a ton of devices so not a big deal.
Only thing that has a static IP here now is the router, the old AD server also had it
sounds like you're doing fine then
@clear ferry i'm surprised you didn't just give the router a reservation, aren't you the reservation everything guy? lol.

Dns 4 lyfe
i was lucky enough to buy a house that was pre-wired with CAT5e so I have several managed switches around the house, definitely need that setup documented because I won't touch it for months and forget everything I setup. it's kind of annoying but I did it a long time ago as a learning experiment
I just connect to hostnames 🤷
Documentation not that needful anymore, I've got a pair of core switches and three distribution switches
you running windows for dns?
Pfsense lyfe
I wanna change my firewall to opensense
I point most stuff at home at IPs, I'm not relying on dns lol.
I probably will soon, just because I want wireguard on the edge
running pfsense in a VM here as well as my domain environment on one server, single point of failure but generally years before I have to worry about it
yeah, I don't wanna run a windows domain controller
you don't have to, again, one of those things i did a long time ago for learning
@sour escarp I wanna run opensens in a VM lol
it's nice to have a little VM setup at home
I did for 4 years, but moved back to a physical server last year
yeah I am running the thing that shall not be named here and pihole in vm's
I just did a bunch of updates to the underlying OS of the pihole VM, and took a snapshot first, love vm's
if updates blow up in your face, revert to snapshot
home VM
i run pfsense, windows DC, windows FS, one ubuntu instance for HA, another for plex, sabnzbd, etc
That's an old patch level of esxi
probably
You should upgrade
i work on computers for a living, what do you expect? lol
i rarely work on my own shit, never enough time
Also, supermicro 🤢
has served me well so far, it's not a supermicro server, just the board
not everyone has HPE monies
@sour escarp did you pirate a license 😄
its esxi, free
yeah, they gimp it out though don't they
It's good enough for most
if i needed a license I have some friends that work for VMW but it's not that important, would just be nice to allocate more CPU to a VM
Unless you need APIs, veeam, vcenter, gpu
exactly
I just run on vbox, in the ghettooooo
i actually wrote some python code to automate some "API" type tasks through ssh
I run enterprise plus
I think static ips are more fragile than hostnames
uhhh what
depends, if the device is critically important to your infrastructure, it should have a static IP otherwise use reservations or whatever
we should configure all of the routers and things on the internet with dhcp, and see how that goes.
You don't have to worry about subnets, conflicts,
Reservations>static
put @clear ferry in charge
one isn't better than the other, they are both tools, use them appropriately... period
I'm not running the internet and neither are you
But that will all go away with SLAAC anyway
I'll never run ipv6 on my lan
@rain swift I am in charge, of most network designs at customers 😛
Ipv6 doesn't mean directly on the internet
Just run link local addresses 🤷
@clear ferry no offense but that doesn't mean anything, i've seen a lot of bad network design 😦
"i do something all the time" isn't validation that it's being done right
Sooner or later your WAN will be ipv6
i've known professionals that have done the wrong thing for 20+ years and when you tell them it's wrong they get offended
It atleast means I have experience, be it good or bad 😂
I hope my designs are good though, they are some of the most important ones during crisis and or wartime
you a cisco guy?
in what country?
greenland
cisco, keeping networking a convoluted nightmare so they can sell certifications.
hehe
I took lots of cisco classes in college, and I refuse to use it at home.
last piece of cisco equipment I had in my house was an ASA 5505
i loathed that thing
Cisco 🤢
my background is in SMB so it was mostly inappropriate for me and my customers and switched to fortinet and ubnt
Fortinet is good
didn't have enough juice with cisco or my resellers to get support on some of the hardest equipment to setup
Ubnt 🤢
i've had great experience with fortinet
i did a nice spoke-and-ring setup but it used BGP so the remote sites didn't have to go through the main node, definitely the most complex thing i did with fortinet, set it up 3 years ago and it's still up and running in maryland
very remote sites, one with satellite internet, all with their own phone systems, worked really well except for the VoIP delay on the satellite hehe
and have a few customers with fortinet + sdwan, works incredibly well
ubiquiti is fine for wireless IMO, have used them a lot for wireless bridges and have sold several hundred UAP-AC-PROs with an extremely low rate of failure and i've deployed these over the last 5 years
forti is expensive though
it's not cheap but it isn't as expensive as others
Have you looked at Aruba @sour escarp ? Great value for money imo
have one customer with a few 90d's in HA config with an HSRP connection in a colo environment and it works great, i imagine the cisco guys see it and shake their head hehe
i haven't, I've worked with other corporate IT companies that deployed aruba and I know everyone swears by them for wifi but I've had no reason to switch
Cisco people🤢
maybe one day i'll have the opportunity to mess with one
I don't have any spare Arubas or I would send you one, just 25 MSM466 in boxes
how much does a relatively entry level AP from aruba cost and will the controller software run on linux?
that is one of the things i love about ubnt, I can run my controller on a cheap virtual host on ubuntu
probably does, i think ubnt supports that too... what about cost?
I worked for Barracuda once 🤢
Cheapest ones start at $100 I think
oh damn, that isn't bad
I don't have the whole catalogue in my head as work most with wired
the UAP-AC-PRO is about that but I think they will soon be replaced by a model that supports the latest wifi standards
whatever the hell they are calling it
think the iphone 11 supports it but not my new MBP 16" 🤦
Wifi6 is the Aruba 500 series I think
took forever for AC adoption so I'm not too concerned about people wanting it, most probably don't know it even exist
doesn't the rpi 4 support AC now?
IoT probably the slowest adoption rate since it doesn't matter much
Most iot is 2.4G
Indeed, but I still have 5ghz coverage in most of my house, but the driveway is 2.4 only 😛
damnit man, only 2 in the driveway? 1st world problems
i have no idea what I get in my driveway, just happy my whole property is covered by my 2 UAP-AC-PROs 🙂
I just run some decent Linksys mesh ones, one of the only brands that support bridge and mesh at the same time
So three in a wireless mesh
yeah that is fine for home
I need to remember to buy a chainsaw on Monday
need to cut some trees?
Exactly, my hedge to be honest
i've never personally owned a chainsaw
It needs to go under the terrasse
I haven't either, so I'll probably kill myself next week
oh, nice
lol
i live in the desert in a relatively new home with basic landscape so never really needed that
I live in a forest, but I've cut down most trees, just my fruit trees remain
how did you cut them down if you didn't have a chainsaw? you axe that shit?
no paul bunyan style? hehe
I have a few axes yes
i tried using an axe a few times and just end up destroying the wood handle lol
because yanno, as much as i want to be awesome at everything i'm not
oh i'm proficient at tools, just not an axe haha
if it says klein, makita or dewalt, i'm proficient 🤣
We are woodsy people, so axe is a basic tool 😛
yes indeed
i'm in Las Vegas and most of the homes here are built by developers and we are not one with nature, we are one with air conditioning
haha yup
the land of liberals trying to shove socialism down our throats
election season is in full swing of course
alright, time to smoke a bowl and continue to sit here and do absolutely nothing productive
Weird, when I opened the discord app on my phone, i briefly saw an Ubuntu question, then it disappeared.
Maybe old cache
not a fan of ubuntu?
Can't do worse than an IBM government project during it's intended purpose
Like our first online census
when i started with linux I used slackware then freebsd and just kind of use ubuntu by default now
IBM mainframe?
lol none of these is a production os
oh, here we go.....
nothing I run is revenue generating directly, they are supporting systems
the only revenue generating systems I personally supported ran on Solaris
and I can say at that time I was definitely underpaid for dealing with that shit
@hushed basalt vibrations? wtf you talking about? what do you think is used for automobile connectors? here in the US is twist on, those wegos are push lock which do you think is more susceptible to vibration? lol not that vibration is some special factor requiring a special connector or anything
wet locations and "extreme" temperature are the only two special classification I had ever seen for connecting wire. and that latter is commercial not evven something a homeowner can buy lol
My company is hardcore about that @hearty depot Docker is already old, only Kubernetes now, when RedHat 8 came out, only RedHat 8, same for CentOS
a lot of companies do different things and leverage different tech
doesn't invalidate other software and products otherwise from not being suitable for production
Well all companies I came around still only used RedHat and CentOS and at least Docker. That's the common way
Considering a 1st world country
And admin knowledge
i couldn't say, i'm in the MSP world
MovieStarPlanet (@MSP_world) | Twitter
I do have one customer with a linux server that is RedHat so maybe that goes in your favor 😆
It's really not about favor, I do favor Debian. But I'm admin and I have to expect to work RHEL;CentOS based, that is just the way to go ^^
RedHat or cent?
Redhat
holy - crazy guy - do he really need that support?
I mean he got you 😛
We haven't had to use it
but they have a couple software devs and they like to handle some of the IT
I do host my personal and community servers on Debian tho, since I favor it. Debian is to be considered production usable as it is very conservative, not like Ubuntu
For stability it's really not about favors tho
yeah more about support and standardization, i get it
i've ditched products in the past because I could get no support when it's critical that i do
oh, ubuntu changed to using YAML using netplan, I approved of this change
Twist on auto mobile connectors... Wtf
i just found this myself when I setup a new ubuntu server for HA and was like WTF
have to read me into net filter 😦
netplan i think
Long live HP-UX
eww, go away
could be 🤣
I still love my iptables
🙂
well you know, any of these tools we use now are just an abstraction that does what we used to do with iptables/ipchains.... sysvctl or whatever the hell, i don't support a lot of linux so I just go with the flow now and learn what I need to
@hushed basalt never heard of a wire nut?
plus I have employees for that now
what do they use?
well for automotive we usually use crimp connectors but maany things still get the nut, like stereos and speakers ect ect
I hadn't heard of wire nuts before I read about them here either
reminds me - back to my unforfilling weekend project..
Client-Side Certificate authentification with either apache or nginx 🙈 it just wont play out
seems like everyone struggles with certs
i do too, i always get through it but it's never pleasant unless I previously documented it
AWS had a big issue with certs recently too
@forest edge you're not supposed to use a wire nut for automotive here either, it's mostly used in home and commercial power
Employees 🤢
standard 110v AC is always spliced using a wire nut in the US
i guess some of the 24v stuff in houses might be because electricians don't understand low voltage systems and they end up doing it
Wire nuts were normal in Norway the last 40 years, now they mostly use these
En mikspakke med ti toppklemmer 773 for EK- og FK-kabel og ti koblingsklemmer 222 for alle kabeltyper.
@sour escarp those are wegos, thats what he was asking about earlier
i have some of these connectors, not sure if I like then but anything is better than a wire nut
Those are super nice
your suppose to wrap the nut and wire with a round of electrical tape to ensure the longevity. but considering wire nuts have already proven to old wire together for god knows how many years they were first started being used the fact remains, if done right, they are practically forever lol
I got myself some chinese knockoffs of those and found them very useful indeed
Like these?
i used these on an in-wall TV kit, they seemed to work well
but those and the levelr ones
definitely not a common thing to see in the US tho
they are just started to come around here in us
not even sure they are in code to be honest
it comes down to cost, same reason I don't use pass thru RJ45 connectors
cheaper to just learn how to terminate wire correctly and the wirenut is cheap
one thing I won't skimp on is compression connectors for coaxial applications
original wire nuts had a locking ring with a cap, technically wouldn't call it a twist nut but it looked like them with the cap on
always spend more for compression
too bad they still don't make those cause I loved those things
interesting, never knew about those
had a single screw on one end of a ring, you just put the wires in then clamped down thye screw and popped the cap on to cover the exposed wire ends
damn things were nice
so like a set screw for a wire nut?'
ok so screw kept wires together, like a terminal block 🙂
yea
i can understand that disappearing then
was a round metal ring with a set screw on one side. came in diffrent sizes for diffrent amount of wires and you twist the wires together, pushed them through then clamped down the screw
these guys are wiring up a lot of wires, the standard wire nut is likely more versatile and doesn't require a tool to install
they would be expsnive these days lol
yup that too
well they still need pliers lol
true, an essential tool for any electrician 🙂
my favorite selection at home depot man, klein stuff gets me everytime, even if not all their stuff is good
These are the defacto for australian electrical. Although they really should be using 221's if they're legal here
it's a shaft with a tip and a few screws.
seriously tho, you guys really use that? what the fuck
those screw type in cheap plastic housing is like a standard every where else
although the wegos have all but replaced those types in europe i believe
I can see the wegos as a good alternative for a wirenut

🤢
