Indeed, it was kinda tragic when I was there, multiple hotels had just shut down

User to be cool late 90's never been back since moving to LA, no need when Vegas is 45 minutes out.

clear ferry
#

I was supposed to play a concert in Vegas 5 years ago, but it got cancelled lmao

tidal bronze
#

Even vegas is eh for me now. Just go there for buffet or buffets

clear ferry
#

I just want to go there to see it, then I'm done probably mildpanic

clear ferry
#

Lol

#

That is so American

#

😂

tidal bronze

Indeed! Eat till you drop.

clear ferry

Zzzz still 25 minutes till boarding lmao

I just wanna get on the flight so I can nap a bit, my daughter kept me awake for a few hours JodieScronch

tidal bronze

I have lost track of wake/sleep hours now. Zombie mode most of the time.

I did that before I had a kid

Now I just need to sleep

tidal bronze

I hear you. Next few weeks going to be crazy. Close to 18 or 19 flights. I am going to loose it.

scenic radish
#

That sounds awful

clear ferry
#

I'm gonna have one per week for a few weeks, though that was enough lmao

scenic radish
#

I'm good with maybe one per year

clear ferry
#

Flying to Norwat you say @scenic radish ?

tidal bronze
#

Now I feel for my buddy thats been doing 6 flights a week for past 15 years. Of course a million mile flier but...... Oh boy.

ocean mirage

short plane rides are fine but even medium ones I hate

scenic radish

clear ferry

Had a friend who travelled 220 days a year or something

#

All around the world

ocean mirage
#

I just hate...lack of legroom

tidal bronze
#

Super cool to have million mile status.

ocean mirage
#

I paid for the wing seats with more legroom last trip I took and it was so so worth it

clear ferry
#

Then he got engaged and wanted to work from home more, think he reduced to 100 days travel per year and lost $60k per year lmao

ocean mirage
#

I wouldn't call it cool per se...

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage do you have legs the length of Italy?

ocean mirage
#

idk how big is italy

tidal bronze
#

Trust me the perks you get is unreal @ocean mirage

ocean mirage

I trust you

im not sure their purpose for flying but either way it seems a bit of an excessive luxury

clear ferry

Yeah, he had platinum in every airline imaginable, and did lot of cool stuff on land and sea platforms, but I could never do that much travel

ocean mirage

you are from norwat you must be tall right

clear ferry

I tower above Americans if that is what you mean

im like 193 I think

clear ferry

@clear ferry yep elite status on any airline. Never pay for a ticket pretty much.

clear ferry

I'm only 185

ocean mirage

I'd still expect that would not be the most comfortable

Shit of a lifetime

you ever weigh yourself before and after a shit

#

intentionally

clear ferry
#

Nope

ocean mirage

its normally a smaller number than you think

But in the past I usually did a number two twice a week

scenic radish
#

i just use docker 😛

ruby mauve
#

.. or that :p Got two VMs up atm (HassOS & PiHole), and one ProxMox container.

steel urchin
#

VMs add a lot of overhead, so I pack as much as I can into a single one

#

But if I have the hardware available, ideally you'd stick to the single purpose principle

#

But they do represent a different unit than say a container

ruby mauve
#

I have indeed noticed that, aye.
Feels like... a lot to use an entire Ubuntu Server install just for PiHole - and even after it's been rebooted and idling for a while it's still using x3 RAM of what the install did on PiB3+/PiZW.

clear ferry

@ruby mauve I did run a esxi cluster at home, now I moved everything to docker, freebsd jails and a single KVM vm

it was kind of a temp setup when the 2 pis they ran on died that I haven't had a chance to do anything with, I'd like to set up 1 machine as a vm host and move them onto that.

Hey guys, trying to get into the automation scene but doing research first. Had some questions about what would work best for me. Not sure where to ask them but essentially what I want is a system that:

  • Doesn't use alexa/google/etc
  • Doesn't need internet (all devices will be on a separate vlan with no internet access)
  • Simple to use with ideally 1 app/location to control everything

I think Home Assistant will do all this however, is there a way to tell which devices will support the no internet thing? For example, I was looking into getting a Leviton Decora Wi-Fi dimmer switch but on the integrations page, it mentions controlling it through the MyLeviton API which i assume is a cloud service and therefore not work with no internet.

Kinda seems outlaw amps are stronger

tidal bronze

Might be the case if you are driving audio primary. AV surround much cleaner on aventage , not only quality DSP timings as well. At least from my tests.

dull chasm

That’s why I was thinking use Yamaha for effects basically

@sour escarp dns stuff pisses me off, I'm running pihole, it does my dns and dhcp, and it works great except for it seems like only some devices pull FQDN's, and when I look in the leases I see a bunch of shit that shows up as "unknown", I can only assume it's due to different standards or something, I have a list of everything with a static IP on the network, and I've started assigning other things DHCP reservations so I know what they are, and I can actually name them in pihole, but damn it's annoying. I have 2 amazon echos and they don't put the mac addresses on the outside, so I dunno which thing they are int he leases lol.

@rain swift if this is just for home, use nmap to search your network, it's an incredibly powerful tool

#

ipam is really overkill for keeping track of home stuff, you can just use onenote, excel, txt file, etc for that. I run several VLANs and have a lot of devices on my network and don't use IPAM

clear ferry
#

Lol ipam at home

#

Even when I still had a /23 network I didn't use it

DHCP reservations was all i needed 🤷

sour escarp

i don't like reservations for everything but they certainly have their place

rain swift

@sour escarp yes, I ran nmap earlier, I have a tex file lol I was just wondering what other people do.
I've got static IPs configured on all the important stuff, but like, the roku's, the TVs, meh, they are getting reservations, and our cell phones, smart watches, lot of other stuff.

#

I don't have a ton of devices so not a big deal.

I just run some decent Linksys mesh ones, one of the only brands that support bridge and mesh at the same time

#

So three in a wireless mesh

sour escarp
#

yeah that is fine for home

clear ferry
#

I need to remember to buy a chainsaw on Monday ThonkEyes

sour escarp
#

need to cut some trees?

clear ferry
#

Exactly, my hedge to be honest

sour escarp
#

i've never personally owned a chainsaw

clear ferry
#

It needs to go under the terrasse lmao

#

I haven't either, so I'll probably kill myself next week mildpanic

sour escarp
#

oh, nice

#

lol

#

i live in the desert in a relatively new home with basic landscape so never really needed that

clear ferry
#

I live in a forest, but I've cut down most trees, just my fruit trees remain

sour escarp
#

how did you cut them down if you didn't have a chainsaw? you axe that shit?

clear ferry
#

Or a manual saw 😛

#

But hedgework is more precision

sour escarp
#

no paul bunyan style? hehe

clear ferry
#

I have a few axes yes JodieScronch

sour escarp
#

i tried using an axe a few times and just end up destroying the wood handle lol

#

because yanno, as much as i want to be awesome at everything i'm not

clear ferry
#

Most Norwegians are quite proficient with tools

#

And we enjoy doing stuff ourselves

sour escarp
#

oh i'm proficient at tools, just not an axe haha

#

if it says klein, makita or dewalt, i'm proficient 🤣

clear ferry
#

We are woodsy people, so axe is a basic tool 😛

sour escarp
#

yes indeed

#

i'm in Las Vegas and most of the homes here are built by developers and we are not one with nature, we are one with air conditioning

clear ferry
#

Muuuuurica

sour escarp
#

haha yup

#

the land of liberals trying to shove socialism down our throats

#

election season is in full swing of course

#

alright, time to smoke a bowl and continue to sit here and do absolutely nothing productive

sour escarp
#

Weird, when I opened the discord app on my phone, i briefly saw an Ubuntu question, then it disappeared.

#

Maybe old cache

clear ferry
#

Thank Dog

#

ubuntu 🤢

sour escarp
#

not a fan of ubuntu?

hushed basalt
#

Can't do worse than an IBM government project during it's intended purpose

#

Like our first online census

sour escarp
#

when i started with linux I used slackware then freebsd and just kind of use ubuntu by default now

#

IBM mainframe?

boreal pewter
#

lol none of these is a production os

sour escarp
#

oh, here we go.....

#

nothing I run is revenue generating directly, they are supporting systems

#

the only revenue generating systems I personally supported ran on Solaris

#

and I can say at that time I was definitely underpaid for dealing with that shit

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt vibrations? wtf you talking about? what do you think is used for automobile connectors? here in the US is twist on, those wegos are push lock which do you think is more susceptible to vibration? lol not that vibration is some special factor requiring a special connector or anything

#

wet locations and "extreme" temperature are the only two special classification I had ever seen for connecting wire. and that latter is commercial not evven something a homeowner can buy lol

boreal pewter
#

My company is hardcore about that @hearty depot Docker is already old, only Kubernetes now, when RedHat 8 came out, only RedHat 8, same for CentOS

sour escarp
#

a lot of companies do different things and leverage different tech

#

doesn't invalidate other software and products otherwise from not being suitable for production

boreal pewter
#

Well all companies I came around still only used RedHat and CentOS and at least Docker. That's the common way

#

Considering a 1st world country

#

And admin knowledge

sour escarp
#

i couldn't say, i'm in the MSP world

boreal pewter
#

MovieStarPlanet (@MSP_world) | Twitter

sour escarp
#

I do have one customer with a linux server that is RedHat so maybe that goes in your favor 😆

boreal pewter
#

It's really not about favor, I do favor Debian. But I'm admin and I have to expect to work RHEL;CentOS based, that is just the way to go ^^

hearty depot
#

RedHat or cent?

sour escarp
#

Redhat

hearty depot
#

holy - crazy guy - do he really need that support?
I mean he got you 😛

sour escarp
#

We haven't had to use it

#

but they have a couple software devs and they like to handle some of the IT

boreal pewter
#

I do host my personal and community servers on Debian tho, since I favor it. Debian is to be considered production usable as it is very conservative, not like Ubuntu

#

For stability it's really not about favors tho

sour escarp
#

yeah more about support and standardization, i get it

#

i've ditched products in the past because I could get no support when it's critical that i do

#

oh, ubuntu changed to using YAML using netplan, I approved of this change

hushed basalt
#

Twist on auto mobile connectors... Wtf

sour escarp
#

i just found this myself when I setup a new ubuntu server for HA and was like WTF

hearty depot
#

have to read me into net filter 😦

sour escarp
#

netplan i think

clear ferry
#

Long live HP-UX

sour escarp
#

eww, go away

hearty depot
#

could be 🤣
I still love my iptables

sour escarp
#

🙂

#

well you know, any of these tools we use now are just an abstraction that does what we used to do with iptables/ipchains.... sysvctl or whatever the hell, i don't support a lot of linux so I just go with the flow now and learn what I need to

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt never heard of a wire nut?

sour escarp
#

plus I have employees for that now

hushed basalt
#

No one in Australia uses wire nuts

#

For anything

sour escarp
#

what do they use?

forest edge
#

well for automotive we usually use crimp connectors but maany things still get the nut, like stereos and speakers ect ect

sour escarp
#

i do mostly low voltage so I personally hate wire nuts

#

give me some b-connectors

orchid rose
#

I hadn't heard of wire nuts before I read about them here either

hearty depot
#

reminds me - back to my unforfilling weekend project..
Client-Side Certificate authentification with either apache or nginx 🙈 it just wont play out

sour escarp
#

seems like everyone struggles with certs

#

i do too, i always get through it but it's never pleasant unless I previously documented it

#

AWS had a big issue with certs recently too

#

@forest edge you're not supposed to use a wire nut for automotive here either, it's mostly used in home and commercial power

clear ferry
#

Employees 🤢

sour escarp
#

standard 110v AC is always spliced using a wire nut in the US

#

i guess some of the 24v stuff in houses might be because electricians don't understand low voltage systems and they end up doing it

clear ferry
#

Wire nuts were normal in Norway the last 40 years, now they mostly use these

forest edge
#

@sour escarp those are wegos, thats what he was asking about earlier

sour escarp
#

i have some of these connectors, not sure if I like then but anything is better than a wire nut

hearty depot
#

that are the cheap ones

#

these are the neat ones

light trout
#

Those are super nice

forest edge
#

your suppose to wrap the nut and wire with a round of electrical tape to ensure the longevity. but considering wire nuts have already proven to old wire together for god knows how many years they were first started being used the fact remains, if done right, they are practically forever lol

orchid rose
#

I got myself some chinese knockoffs of those and found them very useful indeed

sour escarp
forest edge
#

those are wegos

#

wego knockoffs ect

sour escarp
#

i used these on an in-wall TV kit, they seemed to work well

forest edge
#

but those and the levelr ones

sour escarp
#

definitely not a common thing to see in the US tho

forest edge
#

they are just started to come around here in us

#

not even sure they are in code to be honest

sour escarp
#

it comes down to cost, same reason I don't use pass thru RJ45 connectors

#

cheaper to just learn how to terminate wire correctly and the wirenut is cheap

#

one thing I won't skimp on is compression connectors for coaxial applications

forest edge
#

original wire nuts had a locking ring with a cap, technically wouldn't call it a twist nut but it looked like them with the cap on

sour escarp
#

always spend more for compression

forest edge
#

too bad they still don't make those cause I loved those things

sour escarp
#

interesting, never knew about those

forest edge
#

had a single screw on one end of a ring, you just put the wires in then clamped down thye screw and popped the cap on to cover the exposed wire ends

#

damn things were nice

sour escarp
#

so like a set screw for a wire nut?'

#

ok so screw kept wires together, like a terminal block 🙂

forest edge
#

yea

sour escarp
#

i can understand that disappearing then

forest edge
#

was a round metal ring with a set screw on one side. came in diffrent sizes for diffrent amount of wires and you twist the wires together, pushed them through then clamped down the screw

sour escarp
#

these guys are wiring up a lot of wires, the standard wire nut is likely more versatile and doesn't require a tool to install

forest edge
#

they would be expsnive these days lol

sour escarp
#

yup that too

forest edge
#

well they still need pliers lol

sour escarp
#

true, an essential tool for any electrician 🙂

#

my favorite selection at home depot man, klein stuff gets me everytime, even if not all their stuff is good

hushed basalt
sour escarp
#

it's a shaft with a tip and a few screws.

#

seriously tho, you guys really use that? what the fuck

forest edge
#

those screw type in cheap plastic housing is like a standard every where else

#

although the wegos have all but replaced those types in europe i believe

sour escarp
#

I can see the wegos as a good alternative for a wirenut
