last dirge
#

but what they want is a one-person IT team

clever mortar
#

Well, that's a general for most adverts... need X years experience in a product that's been around for X-5 years and we'll pay nothing

steel urchin
#

honestly the whole market is jacked up in terms of fair pay and job reqs

rain swift
#

@clear ferry I like going to some new places, depending on where it is, traveling itself? Ehh, I get claustrophobic in a car for too long and last time I flew I thought I was going to die.

#

then you get into the issue of other countries.

last dirge
#

@steel urchin that's shit pay for what would be a senior level developer

steel urchin
#

again, depends on where you live

#

you can't really make a blanket statement like that and expect me to take you seriously 🀣

last dirge
#

in the US

steel urchin
#

remember, i've hired THOUSANDS of people

clever mortar
#

10 is a fraction of a thousand, yes?

last dirge
#

if you're a senior level java developer and you're accepting that little pay, you're an idiot

steel urchin
#

if you live in LA, sure 100k is shitty

#

but if you live in Saskatchewan, that's amazing

last dirge
#

45/hr 10-99 is like 75K salary

steel urchin
#

sure, but you're paying your own taxes and insurance typically.... and one could make the argument "then don't work 1099, and have your employer pay for those"

last dirge
#

"employer pay for those"

#

have you had a job recently?

steel urchin
#

the way accounting looks at it, is 45/hr is 93,600+taxes+benefits

last dirge
#

employers paying for bennies is SUPER RARE

#

like hen's teeth

steel urchin
#

i've always had my benefits paid for

#

if not 100% covered, damn near 100%

#

unless i add my wife, when she was unemployed during a large move... but her employer usually covers hers 100% as well

last dirge
#

that's exceptionally rare

steel urchin
#

i don't think it is

last dirge
#

it is

steel urchin
#

again, i've hired for tons of companies, it's very common

#

heh, i'm going to just go out on a limb and say i have WAY more experience here πŸ˜‰ and going to just have to agree to disagree

last dirge
#

appeal to authority fallacy but OK

steel urchin
#

(that's also not how that fallacy works πŸ˜› )

#

it would be valid if someone else came in and said "codex said this, so it's gotta be true"...

last dirge
#

you're using anecdata to prop up your status and using that as a "well I've done X"

steel urchin
#

then THEY would be in a logical fallacy

#

so a quick search for jobs around me, and 34 out of 35 i've looked at, all have 100% benefits paid... maybe it's time to come off 1099 for a change πŸ˜‰

#

maybe it's just that i only mess with successful companies, i dunno... but i'm up to 70 job postings, and every single one except the one early on is stating 100% benefits covered

last dirge
#

"generous benefits" around here means ~$300+/month for health insurance only

#

7-10 days PTO per year

#

and I'm makin nowhere near 45/hr 1099

#

πŸ˜‰

forest edge
#

$300+/mo is alittle high

#

Straight plans here start there without a job

steel urchin
#

well US healthcare is a joke, so you can't really compare the two

last dirge
#

you in one of those states that wasn't shitty about the medicare expansion and actually took part in the ACA exchange?

#

because I'm not

steel urchin
#

so i stopped after 135 job postings.. only one DIDN'T say 100% coverage

#

I'm in TX, they're shitty about everything 🀣

last dirge
#

the place I've been contracting for for over 5 years now tried to convince me to go perm

#

with very little retirement matching

forest edge
#

Cost of living plays the biggest role is costs in every area but on average people these days can score a much more affordable plan

steel urchin
#

yeah now matching has never been a thing for me

last dirge
#

horrible healthcare plans

#

@forest edge when I was paying out of pocket for mine before my wife got those sweet government job benefits I was paying like $360/month

#

for really good coverage

#

low deductibles, low copay

#

100% preventative care coverage

steel urchin
#

HSA has saved us tens of thousands

forest edge
#

Alittle over 10 years ago my same plan I have today was costing me like $670/mo but now is under $200. Same plan after job venifits was $340/mo. I wish it would get even better but after the Obama thing it did improve considerably. At least for some

#

Quite frankly for the last 3 months I've forked out over 15k in vet bills and wish pets were covered under my normal insurance lol

clear ferry
#

You mΓΌricΓ€ns and your plans PensiveYeehaw

last dirge
#

@forest edge I feel that

#

you can get pet insurance

#

but it sucks and they deny more stuff than people insurance

rain swift
#

so are you all having a measuring contest? Just post your W2's and be done with it lol.

last dirge
#

W2?

#

πŸ˜‰

clear ferry
#

We have pet insurance over here, think for a less than $200 per year it convers mostly anything

last dirge
#

@clear ferry so what's it take to immigrate there?

rain swift
#

thing i've found after being in IT for a while is its all what you want, I've worked with senior engineers who have no life, so, what good is all that money if people call you all day and night and make you work 80 hours a week.

clear ferry
#

Can you do something cool?

#

You are welcome

rain swift
#

when you're dead, nobody will be telling stories about that wicked domain migration you did.

last dirge
#

I write software

steel urchin
#

@rain swift yep... that's where i am now... (but try 115+ hrs/week for 20 years)

clear ferry
#

We don't have the insane us immigration rules

steel urchin
#

i'm burned tf out

rain swift
#

@steel urchin see, no thanks

clever mortar
#

Work life balance...

steel urchin
#

that's a new term lol

last dirge
#

that's where I'm at now

clever mortar
#

I average about 40 hours a week

rain swift
#

its very hard to have any balance the higher up you go

steel urchin
#

and, it's also a misnomer

rain swift
#

i've seen it so many times

clever mortar
#

I'm also not exactly junior πŸ˜‰

last dirge
#

I make a pretty big paycheck

#

I could get more

#

but I work 100% remote

rain swift
#

I don't want to be a senior anything, I like my free time.

last dirge
#

and I only work 40 hours

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I could double mine if I wanted to give up the balance... like hell

steel urchin
#

the money hooks you in man

clear ferry
#

I have 60hr weeks sometimes, but mostly 40hrs

steel urchin
#

making a quarter million will drive a lot of people to work extra

last dirge
#

meh

rain swift
#

you just have to lower your cost of living lol don't buy a freakin mcmansion and insist on driving a BMW

clear ferry
#

@last dirge you can probably make more here with more benefits iLOVEyou

steel urchin
#

yeah, a lot of people live above their means

#

and they claim it's "expendable income"

rain swift
#

i'm married, we live not too crazy expensive, I buy stuff all the time lol

last dirge
#

@clear ferry but I hate snow

steel urchin
#

umm.... it's only expendable if you have your future covered, you're literally living paycheck to paycheck making 150k/yr 🀣

rain swift
#

like, my phone bill is $30 a month, my car is from 2010

clear ferry
#

@last dirge we have had 5 days this year πŸ˜›

rain swift
#

who cares I leave work at 4:30 and don't think about it again til the next day, it's wonderful.

steel urchin
#

yeah i need to get to that

#

stress of running companies has gotten to me after all this time... i don't think i'm able to do it again for a while

clear ferry
#

I wake up when I want to mostly

#

Except for the baby alarm clock

steel urchin
#

but, if i'm lucky, i can retire waaayyyyy early πŸ™‚

clever mortar
#

I'm conditioned to wake up a the same time every day, to many years of it. On the other hand, I'm at work before everybody else, so I leave before everybody else πŸ˜›

steel urchin
#

i'm conditioned to 2-3 hrs of sleep a night, so i don't really have a sleep schedule :S

clever mortar
#

You're broken

steel urchin
#

😦 i am

clever mortar
#

Or living in an alternate reality πŸ€”

clear ferry
#

I used to sleep 4-5 hours per night

clever mortar
#

7 to 8 hours here or I'm even grumpier than normal

steel urchin
#

yeah, i literally "woke up" (i use quotes because i don't remember sleeping), had closed a huge dollar delivery earlier that day, and had no clue what happened for the 3 days prior to that

#

that's when i decided to take a day off

#

and in that day, i decided i was done

last dirge
#

anybody do MS ActiveDirectory administration?

steel urchin
#

lol not since the NT days

rain swift
#

I also wake up at about the same time every day, I don't have an alarm clock, I get to work early so I can leave early, I can't stand traffic.

#

Now I have automated lights come on when I want to wake up, but I still wake up whenever I wake up lol.

steel urchin
#

yeah traffic sucks.... but i can't be the hermit type that works purely remote... i have to be around people. Plus, it's much easier to mentor and lead in person than over chat

rain swift
#

but having lights come on really low and warm white has been amazing, eyes get plenty of time to adjust

#

i'd love to work remote, never found a job to let me lol

steel urchin
#

i thought i would, too.. but i got stir crazy

rain swift
#

I'll find ways to deal LOL

#

i'd be able to move and live anywhere I want in the US

#

that would make it worth it

#

can't stand the big city

forest edge
#

What's a big city to you

steel urchin
#

i had a gig where I was principal architect, literally my whole job was to fly all over the world and fire the teams, and hire new ones, rearchitect the entire infrastructure from the ground up, and leave.... The ONLY person I ever talked to was the CEO and/or CTO of the company, and occasionally the CFO to discuss budgets.. For 2 years I literally never saw a person I worked with, and was going ALL over the damn world and not having any quality ineraction

last dirge
#

I go somewhere with wifi and work just to get out of the house sometimes

rain swift
#

@forest edge almost a million people where I live.

steel urchin
#

although that was in my 20's.... now i'm a bit more curmudgeon, and could probably stand to use less people around me 🀣

rain swift
#

yeah, I hate most people.

steel urchin

i love PEOPLE, i hate individuals

people watching, getting into random conversations and shooting the shit... love it

So it balances out

forest edge

steel urchin

figured dropping Tesla's name would have done the trick

last dirge

any EV with any range is going to be about the same price as a Tesla Model 3 SR+

steel urchin
#

yeah wasn't that one marketed to target $30k?

forest edge
#

I dunno what was that German ev that was the size of a roller skate someone posted in here awhile back lol

last dirge

the Bolt has decent range but costs almost as much as the Tesla

#

@steel urchin yeah, but nobody bought the cheap one so they stopped making it

steel urchin
#

yeah

bad timing imo

last dirge

everybody paid ~3K more to get the Standard Range Plus

@last dirge just come over here, we have subsided EVs and more iLOVEyou

i recently learned that my 2012 scion tC private party value is about $5500 to $6500 so it appears i will be keeping it until it doesn't run anymore lol

last dirge

we've got a Volt and a Model 3 LR

scenic radish

which could be 20 years from now

rain swift

yeah my wife's chevy was a total piece of shit, we got rid of it and got a 2019 mazda cx-5, love it

it does everything except full self driving

i'm gonna drive my car til the wheels fall off though as long as it runs and doesn't give me problems.

oh. That Idk. I'm gonna install nextcloud on my NAS soon

jade tartan
#

yeah, i wana know if you can have it point to a hassio addon or something, i dont wana buy a hue bridge

ruby mauve
#

I'mma try some googling tomorrow, if no major thoughts on it ^^ Was thinking of trying out Nextcloud of the two.. I think I remember owncloud having some payment stuff for it going on.

#

Can typically find the hue bridge 2.1 fairly cheap atm if it was. Quite a few around here buying more than one of the "Hue starter kits", ending up with two bridges they don't need. Is how I bought my own a couple of weeks back, some €30 or so.

If OctoPrint supports it then there's the IKEA TrΓ₯dfri as well, or any of the fancy ZigBee2MQTT things that I didn't look too much into after finding the cheap Hue.

#

Issue being that the Hue bulbs, IKEA TrΓ₯dfri bulbs, runs on ZigBee, your regular WiFi router can't talk to them.. So you'd need "something" in order to be able to talk to them, if you go that route. Else there's regular wireless bulbs, but no clue if that'd work with the above.

You could probably use a WeMos D1 together with some w2812b led strip, and do it like that, run it off USB power if not too many LEDs.

@mint estuary true, and I understand why they do it and work wise I dont need to access it.

#

The sslh tool I mentioned about is really good for screwing with IT folk. It's kind of hard to distinguish one SSL stream from another, so a lot of really expensive gateway appliances are blind to it. https://github.com/yrutschle/sslh

#

Once you have an external SSH connection, all bets are off!

#

Another really fun one is DNS Tunnelling. Easy to detect if you know about it, but most security tools seem to miss it :/

#

Unfortunately, it seems a lot of "security" outfits are filled by people who got a basic security cert because they heard there's money in security. They know how to defend against the attacks/compromises they were taught, but aren't interested/twisted enough to look outside the box 😒

@urban steppe i just connect to 4g at work lmao

#

@strange vapor you mean like people who segregated their networks to avoid "hackers in iot" but do full routing between the networks? mildpanic

strange vapor

@clear ferry I segregate out the networks for IoT stuff and have full routing. However, the IoT and media network has no outbound access except for what's needed, while the likes of FORBIDDEN TOPIC on the server vlan can connect into the likes of the Hue and the TV.

Oh, and the Android TV can connect out via a Squid Proxy, but that's it.

You should work in security then! πŸ˜›
