#

@clear ferry nah, I'm good

green inlet
#

My favorite video ever

last dirge
#

@green inlet pretty much nowhere in the US is equipped to deal with that shit though

#

well, AFTER it's happened

green inlet
#

An inch of snow?

last dirge
#

an inch of snow on top of an inch and a half of craze ice

forest edge
#

black ice?

last dirge
#

the whole fucking road froze

#

all at once

#

forecast was just flurries

green inlet
#

I lived in Atlanta in 2014 and that video is so funny because of how accurate it is

last dirge
#

then we had a temp bump which melted everything and a front blew in

valid halo
#

I remember that a mayor was praised for foresight for having snow plows only plow the major high way

clear ferry
#

you mean like every other second day in norway @last dirge ? 🤣

last dirge
#

I was working smack dab in the middle of downtown

#

as soon as it started snowing I noped the fuck out on the subway

valid halo
#

Atlanta doesn't have the cash or money to have tons of snow infrastructure for the 1 day a year it snows.

last dirge
#

then drove like 4MPH home from the station

green inlet
#

Did you get stuck?

last dirge
#

no

#

I live in Norcross

#

I rode the train to Doraville

#

then creeped my ass home up Buford Hwy

#

@clear ferry can you see the northern lights where you live?

clear ferry
#

where I'm born yes

green inlet
#

I know hind sight is 20/20 but the weather channel, which is in Atlanta, was telling people for like 5-7 days that snow-magedeon was coming

last dirge
#

does it make noise?

clear ferry
#

Not audible for me atleast

forest edge
#

noise?

last dirge
#

that's so fucking cool

#

yeah, it's due to EMF

#

isn't it?

clear ferry
#

It's sun hitting the magnetic field afaik

forest edge
#

i've never heard of the northren lights ever making any human hearable nopise

last dirge
#

I wanna go to this place

clear ferry
forest edge
#

imagine if it's was a high pitch whine noise lol

clear ferry
#

I haven't been north in the winter for..... 13 years

humble pond
#

Can’t blame you

last dirge
#

@forest edge I figured it may make noise like hydro lines do

clear ferry
#

Maybe if it is very quiet and you are on a mountain

#

never heard it while walking

forest edge
#

it dosen't make anything humans can hear

#

not from all i have ever read about them

last dirge
forest edge
#

so the clap noise is what it makes

#

using a high powered microphone

humble pond
#

Nope, but your phone mic can pick up an RSA key from the noise a CPU makes, so maybe that could work to listen in.

last dirge
#

is there a way to make YouTube fill up the window it's in without filling the screen?

forest edge
#

not from within discord

#

#

Northern Norway is actually a hidden civilisation with it's own warm sunny microclimate

#

They just pretend it's frigid and remote to keep us away

#

@forest edge scientists in that field should have no problem identifying the source of any signals

#

It's like a basic expectation. Like how your mechanic should be able to identify a car from a motorcycle

forest edge
#

yea I don't think it's quite that simple when your pointing a microphone towards space lol

last dirge

hushed basalt

#

last dirge

I bet it really fucks with all RF transmissions

forest edge
#

@last dirge I doubt it, atx amongst others who live close that have made several mentions of running rf devices for ha

last dirge
#

there's absolutely no way that it doesn't

forest edge

if it really messed with things, you'd think they would have pinpointed the issue and stopped using rf lol

last dirge

it might not mess with short-range stuff but it's gotta hammer cell and radio stuff

yeah, mine is...something

mines mine that for as long as she could move 🤣

wet pilot

15mo and already throwing herself to the ground during tantrums

forest edge
clear ferry
#

no tantrums here, but she gives talk-back if we try to tell her not to do anything, then still does it 🤣

wet pilot
#

has managed to hurt herself during that maneuver a few times but still does it anyway

clear ferry
#

there is no out of sight out of mind in this baby, if I hid something when she was 6 months she would search for it like a trufflehunting pig

wet pilot
#

oh yeah, pulls that too.

forest edge
#

@scenic radish still got that best buy smart plug thing you were havving issues with?

scenic radish
#

@forest edge I do indeed

forest edge
#

apparently that whole reboot lockdown thing was pretty common amongst many devices but it gives you a 2 second window to use a kill command via a uart to bypass that to access to reflash or whatever you want lol

#

kill -9 $(ps | grep 'reboot' |sed -r -e 's/^ ([0-9]+) [0-9+/\1/') within that 2 second window and your in lol

clear ferry
#

I'm in

forest edge
#

your done after 2 seconds? 😜

clear ferry
#

Omg another buzzword is catching wind

#

Cloud data lakes

scenic radish
#

Ooooh interesting

forest edge
#

reading this bit about these college kids who hacked like 150 devices using the tx/rx on the boards cause the software engineers for the firmware on the devvices simply just didn't care about trying to make it hard lol

clear ferry
#

🤢

forest edge
#

I didn't even know there were android refridgerators made back in the 2013/2014

clear ferry
#

Oh, we've had them over here I think for atleast that long atleast smart ones in total from Samsung

#

But I don't know a single person that has one

forest edge
#

thing had wifi and a sdcard slot

#

thats pretty good for that age

#

was like android 2.3 lol

clear ferry
#

4 was out by 2013 though

#

And 5 probably in 2014

forest edge
#

don't think manufactures cared, plus 2.3 was probably easier to work with

scenic radish
#

where did you hear that about the best buy plug?

clear ferry
#

2 lived long past its due date

forest edge
#

it wasn't about the plug specifically it was part of the blip these college kids were talking about when mentioning the 150 devices they hacked

#

but that whole reboot bit was common practice these manifactures put in place to try and keep people from hacking them

#

when it couldn't make a connection

#

and i remembered you had said something about that

#

@clear ferry noway, i love upgrading old devices

#

I found a guide that talks about adding a esp8266 to a non-smart tv that has hdmi cec and using that to give it local network control of the tv lol

scenic radish
#

I mean, that's not a bad idea

#

About the esp

forest edge
#

yea and if it was a smart tv with say a usb port that accepted media

#

you could network drive it lol

scenic radish
#

Also I found a way to basically use a flippy boi on my Philips hue bridge

#

There's no way to customize what a button press on one of the switches does when it's before/after sunset with the hue app or third party apps, but you can set up a rule on the bridge to flip a boolean at sunrise/sunset and use the state of that boolean with the switch rules

#

So I have an "automation* on the bridge to flip that bool at the appropriate times

forest edge
#

I wonder if someone came out with a firmware for the hue bridge itself

scenic radish
#

There's a working method to get root but not sure if there's custom firmware

#

Don't think you can do much with root on the bridge other than see that sweet sweet ASCII art

#

And brag about it I guess lol

forest edge
#

half the devices these kids hooked a uart to spat back a complete listing of all the current available commands they could issue through the uart to control the various devices. and half of those devices the manufactures had claimed they cut off all uart access lol

scenic radish
#

Fuckin liars

#

There's a listening telnet port on my security system gateway. ncrack ran for 2 hours (50000 attempts) with no luck

forest edge
scenic radish
#

Which is good but also disappointing

forest edge
#

I was reading an articlke, this has pictures lol

scenic radish
#

I was saying the manufacturers are liars

#

For saying they disabled uart

#

Not the kids

#

Though... Kids are liars sometimes

forest edge
#

yea I know, this was 2014 so shit these days i would think would be diffrent. check 7:20 in the video

#

they show a wemo but the article i was reading said just about all the devices were same that was like that

#

but it shows that command lol

#

have fun with that 2 seconds. uarts are cheap worth trying lol

scenic radish
#

I could give it a shot haha

clever mortar
#

I had the "pleasure" of them (whoever they were) trying to troubleshoot SAN issues, and it became clear they didn't know what they were doing. It's a bad sign when I know more about the hardware and protocols for something I have only a few days of experience of...

clear ferry
#

Can't see that it gives me anything I don't already have @undone pagoda

clever mortar

ended up dropping the session with them and fixing it myself...

I am incredibly cautious with taking on new jobs themselves

@clever mortar then it's time to tell them to leave

valid halo

as I am loathe of the idea of overstating what I can do

#

but once i'm on the job it's when I have the problem of wanting to say yes to my boss/coworkers.

clever mortar

I wrote a detailed and to the point email to the relevant folks, pointing out their delusions of adequacy @clear ferry

clear ferry
#

Delusions of adequacy, sounds like a nice prog rock band name ThonkEyes

valid halo
#

That is a good name

clever mortar

I'll say yes if I reasonably believe I can do something, even if I've never done it before. I do have a slightly extensive set of experiences allowing me to find hats to pull rabbits out of though 😄

valid halo

Dunning-Krueger doesn't roll of the tongue as well

#

I've been told often that I need to work on my confidence.

clever mortar
#

It's hard, and the difference between confidence and arrogance often gets overlooked by those who're lacking the skills to back their mouth

#

“You have imposter syndrome,” He says, “but paradoxically, that’s often a sign of competence. Only people who understand their work well enough to be intimidated by it can be terrified by their own ignorance. It’s the opposite of Dunning-Kruger syndrome, where the miserably incompetent think they’re on top of the job because they don’t understand it.”

I've had the pleasure and challenge of working with people who're great, in their field. I look at what they do, and I'm blown away. Not often enough does it really sink in that they look at me the same way...

@hushed basalt In the network world it's all Yang, which can be XML or JSON

hushed basalt
#

....json

scenic radish
#

don't worry, i'm a big fan of YAML

#

at least for writing it

hushed basalt
#

Let's use javascript object notation to write configuration

last dirge
#

I like JSON

strange vapor
#

All the manufacturers seem to read the specs differently, so there's a whole ecosystem of vendors doing the magic to generate cross platform Yang!

hushed basalt
#

Because something made to parse objects into strings to pass between services is the best configuration syntax

#

Yaml is json

#

It's just readble and writable

last dirge
#

as is JSON if you pretty-print it

hushed basalt
#

Ehhhh

scenic radish
#

in fact, YAML is a superset of JSON

strange vapor
#

I visited an ISP recently where everything was managed with a few expect scripts which had been written over the course of 10 years...

#

They literally ssh'd, or in one cases telnetted, into the devices and lets the expect script do it's thing!

hushed basalt
#

Vanilla json has no advantage over yaml for configuration

#

It just has a lot of redundant brackets and trailing comma gotchas. And I find it a lot easier to mess up scope

#

I'm looking at you vscode

#

@strange vapor nothing like "it works for us"

#

Ask blockbuster how "it works for us" went

scenic radish
#

i despise writing JSON

hushed basalt
#

Ew I can't agree with you

#

I love writing JSON

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt I tend to write small python scripts to generate the JSON as there's less likely to be silly errors

hushed basalt
strange vapor
#

And debugging syntax errors in a python script is easier than debugging bloody json\

hushed basalt
#

Could you write in yaml then parse up to json?

#

But yeah python definitely works too

Beautiful beautiful trailing commas

#

Time for sleep

#

Groceries come 5-9am tomorrow

And it's 10.37

#

See I used exact minutes this time, for the pedantic ones :D

last dirge
#

python and yaml both have the stupid arcane reliance on whitespace formatting

hushed basalt
#

I can't say I've ever had a whitespace problem in 2 years of dealing with python or yaml

last dirge
#

you're a damn liar

hushed basalt
#

I've definitely had problems of bracket scoping in JS and json

#

And any readable code will be indented exactly like python would anyways

#

And god damn trailing commas

#

Computers should work for us not the other way around

scenic radish
#

Yeah I'd rather deal with indentation than braces or commas

hushed basalt
#

And semicolons

#

So redundant

#

Everyone always puts a carriage return after every semicolon

scenic radish
#

So many quotes for key value pairs...

last dirge
#

@hushed basalt but not every carriage return is the end of a statement so...

hushed basalt
#

It is in Python :D

last dirge
#

no it's not

hushed basalt
#

Well you can break things over multiple lines like arguments

scenic radish
#

🤏

last dirge

go look at the code for FORBIDDEN_TOPIC

scenic radish

last dirge
#

and it's ludicrously low line width

hushed basalt
#

88 characters is good

last dirge

and don't even get me started on the stupidity of "indentation matters unless you do this and then it all gets reset"

#

88 characters is bullshit

nobody's developing on an AMIGA

hushed basalt

Pep8 is 80

80's even worse

hushed basalt

Especially when you have three files open side by side

scenic radish

that whole thing is interesting too, in norway employers put money into our retirement by law, a minimum value, but they can put in more, I think mine puts in double what the minimum is, and I can save on top of that, but even if I don't do that I would still have $80k a year if I retire at 67

@jaunty summit what tool are you using to get that?

steel urchin

#

I had some issues with a customer expanding a 48TB LUN to 64TB

#

turns out 4K blocks will only get you to 52TB or something

#

so had to create a new LUN with 8K blocks and migrate everything to that one

#

fun times

jaunty summit
#

well that explains why i had so much loss with my new nas... I lost 17TB to parity and block size... 10TB was for parity...

How many drives ?

jaunty summit
#

clear ferry

and RAID6 ?

jaunty summit

clear ferry
#

that sounds a lot, what capacity ?

jaunty summit
#

8x wd pro 10TB

clear ferry
#

that should bring you down to 65TB usable

#

ish

#

not sure if I would ever run 8 x 10 TB drives in RAID5 though

jaunty summit

synology 🤢

#

I pushed in 48 10TB drives a few weeks back

#

that was fun

jaunty summit
#

my last synology lasted 7yr zero issues. sold it to a buddy of mine

#

yeah. it took me 5 days for 17tb

#

i would have lost my mind for 48

#

thats with a LAG inplace

clear ferry
#

it was already a 2PB box that was 88% full, so it took some time to level out

jaunty summit
#

I played a bit of Superhot VR. Punched the wall twice trying to hit a bad guy in the face and hit the ceiling lamp trying to catch a gun in the air. I need more room 😢

wet pilot
#

lol need higher ceilings

#

my first floor has taller then average ceilings, its kinda nice

#

this pretty much 😄

#

Thankfully the rift s controllers have the ring pointing backwards, so when that happens only the fist hits the wall and not the controller. Unlike with that poor bastard who broke his 😦

Rift S was the first one I thought was affordable enough at 400€. VR lacks a killer app and overall the content is pretty limited. The tech still has some way to go too for it to be great

I remember considering the Quest

but when I saw it was also 400 bucks
