It doesn't have to be reliable for video @orchid rose 😛

orchid rose
#

I replied to some random message from god know how long ago

clear ferry
#

Or just reliable enough

brisk glen
#

mdns is just as reliable as dns

clear ferry
#

We used it for some heart rate monitors, it worked fine enough for that too

brisk glen
#

except tthe multicast bit 😛

clear ferry
#

500 of those roughly

Over 400 switches

brisk glen

fine when the switch is not treating multicasts like broadcasts

Long live Comware

None of that inferior Catalyst, nexus or unifi stuff ;)

Or extremeos 🤢

brisk glen

unifi is for the poor lazy man

well not soo poor sometimes

clear ferry

Like ubiquity you say? 😛

brisk glen
#

@clear ferry yes edgeOS 2 is trash... at least they know it is

clear ferry

🤢

brisk glen
#

aka why there is a brand new OS for unifi

#

beats the new cisco bullshit :/

clear ferry
#

Cisco ACI is even worse

🤢

#

I like that it takes a network admin 30-60 minutes more to configure my network ports in aci than it would take in any other OS

brisk glen
#

no wonder why cisco is forcing python automation on the ccna cert

their shit is soo unusable, you havre to resort to scripting to set stuff

clear ferry

Yeah it is terrible

The emc storage is almost as bad

last dirge

IOS has never been great

A customer of mine that used to have 3par used to do 5 minutes to provision a new disk to a 50 node esxi cluster, with emc it took him 45 to do the same thing

Can't believe I am paying $50+ for Chromecast audio. 🤔

clear ferry
tidal bronze
#

Some are selling for 100+ on eBay. 🙄

clear ferry
#

Wtf

#

There has to be better options...

tidal bronze
#

That's the only way for no latency audio sync with AVR and GH speaker groups

#

I had 2 and pulled them out, for the life of me can't remember where I put it.

clear ferry
#

You could mangle a gh mini and connect the speaker output to something I guess

#

Cheaper than $100

#

😛

tidal bronze
#

Not 2 channel

clear ferry
#

Oh right

tidal bronze
#

Found 1 for 44 plus shipping, oh well.

scenic radish
#

i knew i should have grabbed one when they were $15 each

#

then i could have sold you it for $44 plus shipping

orchid rose
#

no hdmi on your AVR?

#

I have one chromecast audio, but now that they discontinued it, I'll probably have to look at the chromecast devices in the future if I'm to extend the audio groups

my network works fine

but enjoy your hardware that they make not support newer versions of software so they force you to buy new hardware, or make the devices go slower and slower to make the battery life longer, etc. etc. etc.

gotta maintain that reality distortion field.

@clear ferry i think you think americans are more sensitive than they really are lol

clear ferry
hushed basalt

I spoke to someone tonight who said American customs was really big on rejecting developers on holidays

#

"Why are you here for six weeks, you must be working! "

scenic radish

wut?

clear ferry

Last time i flew into the us I was with my wife and sisters

scenic radish
#

we're required to take an online cybersecurity course at work because people at work are idiots and click on the fake phishing emails the IT dept sends out

clear ferry

The guy in customs gave off a real feminine vibe, but was flirting with all of my female companions, but when I came up he was like awrite, here yo passport, begone

scenic radish
#

so i'm sitting here for the next hour taking the course, ffs

clear ferry
#

@scenic radish we have to take it once a year, because people be idjits

#

And they send test mails atleast once a month we have to report to phishing as a test

rain swift
#

@scenic radish depends greatly on which american you talk to, if they are a progressive, lefty, SJW nutjob, they will be very sensitive, to comical levels.

scenic radish

ehh... maybe. i try not to make mass generalizations though

rain swift

stereotypes exist for a reason lol.

clear ferry

I'm a stereotype sad

Fat IT guy

dusky plank

scenic radish
#

the training just showed this tip:

Never connect to open Wi-Fi unless you are using a VPN (virtual private network). It’s too easy for hackers to trick you and gain access to your device. Just never do it if you want to stay secure.
as though the people who are clicking on fake phishing links are gonna know what a VPN is without explaining it first

#

and they don't even explain what it is lmao

inner vault
#

time to bring up the point that not all VPNs will protect against that anyways? a vpn that just adds routes to a private network without tunneling all traffic and hijacking all DNS won't do shit against someone trying to mitm your banking info or facebook password or whatever

tru. my traffic is encrypted with a 2048-bit key so i think i'm good

dusky plank

I use 4096, ultra paranoia mode

i can't get tasker to reliably trigger starting my VPN based on wi-fi networks, it's kind of annoying me

@scenic radish openvpn? it provides a seamless tunnel on ios at least :/

You get out of your car and find a flash drive lying on the pavement. It's labeled Payroll 3rd Qtr.
What should you do with it?
A Take it to Accounting to see if it belongs to them.

B Plug it into your own computer to see if you can figure out who it belongs to.

C Pick it up and throw it away so that the next guy won't get tricked.

D Take it to your IT department and tell them exactly where you found it.

The connect task checks for connectivity before bringing up the VPN, to avoid shooting self in foot with captive portals.
All the profile does is check that it's WiFi connected and one of the two profiles Home and Trusted Wi-Fi aren't active

clear ferry
#

@scenic radish reminds me, when I did my driver's exam 20 years ago, we had questions like that

#

You hit someone with a car, do you a, run over them three more times, b go out and berate them or c call an ambulance

#

In that style of idiotic alternatives

#

For the whole exam

clever mortar

(a)

#

I've seen the zombie movies

clear ferry

I would do a first, then b, then a again

scenic radish
#

@clever mortar ah, thanks. i'm just triggering on Wifi connected with !my-SSID as the parameter. for some reason it doesn't automatically connect most of the time

clear ferry
clever mortar
#

Weird

scenic radish

does yours also bring up the openvpn connect app briefly upon connect/disconnect?

also what version of tasker are you on?

also what is love?

The drives from AWS seem to have survived the dodgy packaging. Both working perfectly.

Eh, it's good, I can fix things when I get home

But never had the time

Oh, I do, I've got Wireguard too 😉

But there's a limit to what I want to do remotely

Plus, I think the fscking Intents have changed since the last time I connected to untrusted Wifi...

clear ferry
#

😛

clever mortar
#

I have more data than I use, and almost global coverage with it, I don't use untrusted wifi much

clear ferry

I should setup automatic connect to my openvpn

When I have time ...

Need to study how to use it properly

clear ferry

I never cap out my 8 cores on my desktop anyway

#

And I run a lot of applications

orchid rose
#

futureproofing is usually a bad idea imo

wet pilot
#

eh, "depends"

orchid rose
#

for sure

last dirge
#

building a PC once a decade is better than upgrading piecemeal every few years

wet pilot
#

future proofing by getting a mobo that has additional ram slots you're not using can help

clear ferry
#

My desktop is 13 years old

#

Or, 12 perhaps

orchid rose
#

again that depends Brian. You can usually get decent money for components that are a few years old

clear ferry
#

Mid range i5 at the time

orchid rose
#

I just sold the i5 2500k that I had... Finally there's some progress with cpus again

clear ferry
#

Skylake was a great boost

#

Probably best since nehalem

wet pilot
#

until the heartbleed mitigations

clear ferry
#

Indeed, but very few of my customers have even noticed the mitigations tbh

#

Only niche cases will actually notice it irl

wet pilot
#

current AMD is actually legit though

clear ferry
#

Atleast the first design they had of the recent architecture was shite

wet pilot
#

definitely, that's been fixed though

clear ferry
#

Not sure if they fixed the design since

wet pilot
#

their NUMA was a mess

clear ferry
#

Yes exactly

wet pilot
#

that's fully resolved with their current line

clear ferry
#

So most of my customers who ordered AMD returned them

#

And still they won't order them

wet pilot
#

we'll see. the benchmarks for multi-socket workloads are impressive

#

its an up-hill fight for sure

clear ferry
#

Yeah, but it is still memory that is the constraint in 80% of environments

#

And migrating from intel to amd requires planned downtime for the virtualized workloads, which makes it hard and one way

wet pilot
#

the shear number of pcie4 lanes would also be interesting to some customers

clear ferry
#

Maybe, I don't see anyone having constraints there, most can fit 2x2x25gbit and 2x2x16gbit and see no issues still

wet pilot
#

iirc the max memory per socket is higher with latest amd too

clear ferry
#

Maybe when we move to 100 and 32 Gbit

#

We do 3TB per dual socket now I think, or it might have upped to 4TB

wet pilot
#

maybe. I think some of the compute workloads would add "gpu" type things to their servers

clear ferry
#

Yeah, but I hardly see more than two cards per server still

#

Which is manageable

wet pilot
#

AMD is 4T / Socket

#

so double the ram on a dual socket box with similar numa mapping (allegedly)

clear ferry
#

Had to check

#

Cascade lake does 4.5TB per socket

wet pilot
#

huh. the .5 is odd

clear ferry
#

And optane, which I don't think amd has something similar

wet pilot
#

lol Intel is telling people to test their latest optane on AMD because its pcie4

#

because they don't have a board+cpu to handle it

clear ferry
#
No letter = Normal Memory Support (1.0 TB)
M = Medium Memory Support (2.0 TB)
L = Large Memory Support (4.5 TB)
wet pilot
#

i think the amd argument there is that its a few grand cheaper per cpu though compared to the L cpus from blue

clear ferry
#

No wait.. not optane, I was thinking of the persistent DDR memory

wet pilot
#

i think that's optane?

last dirge
#

optane is NUTS

clear ferry
#

Optane = pcie, optane dc = ddr

#

They changed the naming I think

wet pilot
#

because Intel has a great track-record with naming things these days 😛

clear ferry
#

With naming at all

wet pilot
#

their model numbers are getting dumb

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I just use the internal cheat sheets

orchid rose
#

not sure why they kept the numbering scheme with 10th gen...

clear ferry
#

We even have a few models that are HPE specific that you can't get at other vendors

orchid rose

makes it confusing

Outlook for Android is actually good

rain swift

@boreal pewter if someone would just integrate nmap + zenmap into HA it could scan everything for you wired and wireless. You could probably make automations and alerts etc.

boreal pewter
#

Yeah, if we only focus on the cases those programs cover. (I didn't want to get it HA related here tho since it is forbidden)
What I think about is in a wider range tho, having a backend database on such a scan tool with all known brands, products, standard passwords and other security flaws they may have

There have been enough stories of hijacked IP cams and such (not that I'm afraid of it or need), but I guess there're many not so advanced users

yeah well, you can't save those people from themselves lol

it's clearly not just me

their solution is to just replace it, so we'll give it another try

the technician i finally got to speak to said they've been having about a 30% failure rate as of late

that sucks

well atleast they admit there is an issue so replacement won't be an issue

#

@steel urchin should givve me your security screw cause i f'in lost mine lol

dusky plank
#

you can tune those things and set your wifi db to 30db or more..
of course I don't do any of this, this is of course illegal depending on where you live

steel urchin
#

lol now who's bad with stuff?

forest edge
#

stupid how it is on the bottom

#

slipped out of my hand and no idea where it went

steel urchin
#

actually i felt the way all the screws in the damn thing were a pain in the butt

#

because they're bugle-heads it shifted my plate because i wasn't 1-trillion percent accurate in my angle

#

so all the tapping and aligning to make it level meant jack shit once i screwed it in

#

granted, it's only off by a little bit and isn't really visible to be crooked, it irked me

forest edge
#

lol

#

invest in a punch

#

makes that stuff way easier

#

need to figure out how to pipe the doorbell notification in ha without using the amecrest intergartion

#

oh gross i don't think the amcrest api can do local lol

steel urchin
#

i have one somewhere but it's hard to find in all my boxes... still need to do a lot of stuff in the garage

scenic radish
#

🚪 🔔 🎥

forest edge
#

the first revision of that doorbell someone had made custom firmware for it which I wanted

#

but i couldn't find the damn thing for sale anywhere

last dirge
#

who was pimping the TS-100?

#

@tidal bronze ?

tidal bronze
#

Yep

steel urchin
#

only thing about this nelly doorbell is i don't know what the best way to integrate it is

#

it says onvif support but people have had problems with it not fully working (but don't explain what's not working to know if it's user error or what)..

forest edge
#

it dosen't like being cut off from the internet that's for sure

#

the rtsp dosen't stop or anything

#

but my indicator light flashes 4 times then pauses lol

#

kind of annoying i will admit, minor thing but still

#

I hope it stops over time

#

this is why I don't support any of the youtubers even when they do find something interesting. not one of them goes into real detail when reviewing products lol

steel urchin
#

well i re-ordered it, should be here mon/tues so i'll swap it out and see how it goes

#

going to go back to the 24VA transformer as well, as the tech specs say 16-24 is supported...

#

for all i know that could have caused an issue as well

#

should be quick since the plate is already on there, just replace the actual doorbell, and the transformer was a simple 10 minute thing (and now that i found my headlamp will be easier than working in the dark)

dusky plank
#

bobs

forest edge
#

lol

#

may have to do an operation on mine if the light dosen't stop blinking

#

I wonder if it's squaking over not reaching a the time server

A pi3 with ssd is running my 2nd ha instance(light and light remotes). But not as higly available as needed. Thinking about a a orange pi or so. Good idea?

The Orange Pi range isn't as well supported as the Raspberry ones, but I'm preferring my Orange Pi Zero to the Raspberry Pi Zero it replaced

The emmc storage adds the value as far as I can tell/understand
Would guess that I can throw Debian on it and good to runble

forest edge
#

there's even a config tool that will let you assign a static ip to the thing, but dosen't appear to do much else

steel urchin
#

sooo... they're selling banned products?

#

just went back to the old transformer

forest edge
#

they banned many products OEMS were selling from Dahua

#

I don't see the doorbell being on the list but that dosen't exactly make it alright lol

steel urchin
#

yeah....

forest edge
#

apparently there has been a crap ton of foul play both through lack of security as well as even a backdoor thing lol

steel urchin
#

Are you ditching it?

forest edge
#

no

steel urchin
#

Aka, ding dong ditch 🤣

forest edge
#

most of it is audio type crap

steel urchin
#

Well I'm back on the old transformer, the new one will be here Monday-ish

forest edge
#

like them being able to hack in the audio feed, wtf do i care if they listen to outside my door lol

steel urchin
#

Right? Don't event care if they see the feed either

forest edge
#

plus i cut the doorbell off the net comletelly so they can't evven do that

#

as long as it ding dongs and pipes the rtsp feed thats all i care about lol

steel urchin
#

i really like the idea of talking to the person at the door

forest edge
#

and if the blink continue to blink, well the light will go poof lol

steel urchin
#

so i can tell a door to door salesman (although we haven't had any, don't think they'll even be allowed in) to fuck off

#

i'll def need to look at motioneye since the integration is doodoo

#

sensors don't even register due to not being able to hit the api properly

#

(which i also am wondering if was causing some internal server error by basically DOSing itself due to 500 errors)

#

YAFR (yet another factory reset) and it's back up and running

#

let's see how long it lasts with the integration off and the transformer back to the lower voltage

forest edge
#

hope digiblurDIY dosen't get mad for plastering the truth on his video but oh well, people should know lol

#

@steel urchin integration is trash imo because it relies soley on the api. not only is there a minimum 10 second throttle that dosen't include any additional delay with network.

steel urchin
#

yeah the feed was super delayed

forest edge
#

so the motion sensor will be as fast as 10 seconds behind actual motion ect

steel urchin
#

so motioneye will shim the feature?

forest edge
#

motioneye is instant

steel urchin
#

shoot, might as well look into it.. after i clean my keyboard.. got some weird grease on it from touching tools :S

forest edge
#

well as instant as it can from feed to motioneye ect

#

the rtsp feed into motioneye is not 30fps tho

#

it fluctuates but some stuttering is bound to happen and it floats around 20fps or so

#

which is perfectly fine by me, but don't go thinking it's gonna be buttery smooth lol

#

you want buttery smooth you need a better wired cam

steel urchin
#

i do like butter, but i can live with 20fps.. i'm assuming that's because of all the processing motioneye does?

#

also what are you running on? i forget

forest edge
#

on an rpi4 so it may be better/diffrent for you

steel urchin
#

ah, yeah i'm on an i7 4770k... we'll see in a few...

#

easy to add, not a fan it stores credentials in plain text

#

i'm idling around 29.9 fps

#

sounds good to me

#

well if you find a way to get rid of the default timestamp junk i'd love it

#

lol I loaded up the IP config util and it instantly went offline, and bleh

forest edge
#

lol

#

i don't think the timestamp can be removed

steel urchin
#

it found it.. i started going through the panels and it went offline

forest edge
#

what ip config

#

oh some amcrest software lol

#

oh shit thats a clone of the config thing i mentioned earlier from dahu lol

steel urchin
#

just power cycled the breaker again, turns out i have to leave it off for a full minute, it holds power pretty good

#

jesus, this thing is so finnicky... i left it off for 5min just now to try and factory reset it again... gotta wait for it to boot up...

forest edge
#

I tried to up the fps alittle and it rebooted back to same settings lol

steel urchin
#

mine is non responsive now

#

i hear a tiny light click sound when i hold the reset button down for ~10s, presumably the speaker getting some light power then dying... light is on, but no ding dong, no reset, no nothing

forest edge
#

had me alittle excited there for a sec

#

thought it was gonna let me up some of the values

#

I wonder if the high fps is what caused your to crap out

#

maybe thats why mine is set to 15 lol

steel urchin
#

yeah i set it to 30fps in that tool

forest edge
#

mine won't let me change it from 15

steel urchin
#

i don't know if it actually set or was already offline at that point

#

but, it sounds like a dead unit atm

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
#

talk about frustrating

#

so the new one arrives monday or tuesday, the doorbell guy is dropping a check off wednesday... i just want it to ring for him so i can rub it in his face lol

#

did you at least try the timestamp overlay removal?

forest edge
#

I didn't see an option for it

steel urchin
#

well at least i got a brief intro to motioneye lol

forest edge
#

lol

#

camera does see at night well

hushed basalt
#

The tiny click sound is most likely the IR filter

steel urchin
#

mm definitely sounds like a piezo speaker

#

it happens on "command" when i hold the reset button down

forest edge
#

you rebooted it so much it no longer thinks it's a camera

steel urchin
#

lol or a doorbell... thing literally only lights up and that's it

tidal bronze
#

@steel urchin doorbells don't like you.

steel urchin
#

or they're just garbage

#

i mean the "Senior Technician" admitted they have a 30% failure rate.. he was surprised i was able to get it to reboot at all previously

tidal bronze
#

Did you try powering it direct ?

steel urchin
#

yeah actually... direct from the transformer

tidal bronze
#

Bypassing the run ?

steel urchin
#

yep

#

for all i know when everyone suggested going to the 30va transformer may not have been helpful

tidal bronze
#

There is always headroom with specs.

#

Specially for something like a doorbell then again I don't know how they think when designing these things😄

#

I was going to get the amcrest and try it out. Let's see.

proper swift

tidal bronze

proper swift

last one was a stupid DIN8. so silly

steel urchin
#

The tech specs list 16-24 (which i found later on a sketch ftp link), 30 is a significant overhead

tidal bronze
#

Yes/no

steel urchin
#

but either way, it was exhibiting issues within hours of install... a new one is coming along anyway

tidal bronze
#

Regulator in such a device will not be 16-24 if the spec is 16-24, always considerably higher

steel urchin
#

should have seen the rtsp feed (when nothing else was working)... looked like a 8-bit filter 🤣

#

i love this Ron Swanson character, he's hilarious

forest edge
#

WTF

#

this camera had outbound traffic to some goverment office in OH DoD

#

yea department of defense

steel urchin
#

did you wave?

forest edge
#

no idea what it sent

#

i promplty put it back on block lol

#

there was like tons of outbound to amazon tech, then i started to see the dod shit and was like wtf is going on lol

steel urchin
#

huh... why would it send anything to either?

valid halo
#

No clue.

#

Why would the DoD want to see a random ass camera

proper swift
#

darn. stupid webcard lost it's firmware, needs a new driver file.

#

well.. my 4th device, that has a gen-U-ine DB9 on it. that should be easy for a change.

I bet I can get it right in 2 tries. 🙂

forest edge

so apparently amazon handles thier api

that amcrest ad110 or whatever

scenic radish

put it abovve your head in the bedroom and automate it to turn on when we ping you from discord

scenic radish

hushed basalt

Can't you just block it

I did block it

BUT

the stupid light ring around the button flashes when it can't call china or the DoD apaprently

forest edge

it's about to get an operation tomorrow with my soldering iron

steel urchin

could you sniff to see what it's looking for, and stub it out?

forest edge
#

thats what i was doing when i found out it was pinging the DoD lol

#

then i blocked it promptly

forest edge
#

@steel urchin thats the same camera i think

steel urchin
#

yeah basically

#

juts different body

forest edge
#

almost has me wondering if it's the same thing in that shelly camera even tho that one looks drasticly diffrent

steel urchin
#

nelly?

#

i think that one is the RCA one

forest edge
#

that DB1 is all over the Dauf or whatever the hell that company was

#

so if you see DB1 thats an indicator

#

this amcrest ip config thing allows you to upload firmware

#

so maybe someone will come up with something

#

or maybe theres already something i haven['t found yet

steel urchin
#

Go go gadget Sonoma!

#

I'm about to give the dogs a bath and break my back more. Weeee

wet pilot
#

should automate that 😛

hushed basalt
#

Is there something like tasker but for windows

#

Basically I'm using a windows 10 tablet as a dashboard

#

And I want something that can turn the screen on and off based off camera motion, external calls etc

wet pilot
#

hmm

#

maybe autohotkey?

#

i'm not really aware of anything specific

#

windows might not look too fondly at that kind of thing. would behave too closely to malware

steel urchin
#

Ahk is easy to grasp, although it has horrible syntax

wet pilot
#

it really does

steel urchin
#

I made a workspace manager with it, spent maybe 2 hours working the actual working part of it, and another 2 weeks for the shitty gui 🤣

valid halo
#

auto hot key. I've heard of this before

wet pilot

i used it to drop a signature into our shitty ticketing system

steel urchin

i've wanted to go clean up the code, but it works well enough for my uses

hushed basalt

I wonder how good python is at controlling and listening to windows desktop events

I could run a flask API on the laptop :D

#

And hit it with ha REST

modest sentinel

@scenic radish lol, yeah told ya that thing was good! glad you got it

wet pilot
#

w32api i think is the module you want

#

i used it to automate some ms outlook stuff in the past

#

a tool to create webex meeting invites and then add details to a ticket

#

pywin32

steel urchin
#

depending on what exactly you're trying to do, AHK really does have some nice features, like waiting for a window to be available, m/k simulation, etc

scenic radish
#

@modest sentinel except... now i need to find a use for it lol

wet pilot
#

add some ML to identify the complaints

steel urchin
#

or go green every time ATX splats a 🤢

wet pilot

or just assume whenever someone without a role speaks its a complaint 😛

scenic radish

both are good ideas

@steel urchin well you might be right. i think my camera just flaked lol

steel urchin
#

i'm always right

#

my wife hates it 🤣

forest edge
#

when you power cycled it you didn't have to like reset everything back up did you from scratch?

steel urchin
#

yep

#

i did have to... the first 3x it worked, after that i'm left with a dead unit

daring inlet
#

Yikes

steel urchin
#

i left it pulled for a few hours while i tended to other stuff and tried again, nada

#

well, let me rephrase... i didn't HAVE to in your use-case.. RTSP was working the first time i had to reset.. the 2nd time it was super blocky, like it was going from a 160p res to 1080p res.. so i factory reset that time.. 3rd time all video stopped working but motion and doorbell function were intact, and now on the 4th time i have a brick

last dirge
#

dead unit

#

heh

forest edge
#

lol

#

well i'm not messing with it tonight, just made sure it wasn't connected or putting off an AP and it can sit out there with it's solid blue light all night for all i care

hushed basalt
#

This is why I want a POE camerw

#

:D

#

Less cloud bullshit too. Just simple ONVIF

#

Just getting a camera in the right position can be tricky though

#

A dome mounted on the wall near the door at shoulder height is best but it can be unsightly

steel urchin
#

i just think it's cool to talk to the person at my front door without getting up 😛 or being away from the house

hushed basalt
#

True

steel urchin
#

anything else i don't really have a need for, myself

hushed basalt
#

Hikvision have one but it's probably $150USd

#

Poe for lyfe

steel urchin
#

yeah it's about that, and i wasn't sure if it was required PoE or what... but no way i'm running PoE through the trim n all that shit

#

i was hanging outside with some of the neighbor's yesterday, and one of them noticed another got the works on the cameras and stuff on her house from the security company (aka doorbell people), and while she was bragging the old man goes "if they climb over the wall or break through the gate, they deserve my stuff" and i about died of laughter inside

hushed basalt
#

They usually won't have wifi if they're poe

#

H265 is worth its weight in gold as well

forest edge
#

ugh

#

all of them are crap

steel urchin
#

yeah, so now you can stop talkin shit about my luck 😛

forest edge
#

and the scary thing is, the majority of the video doorbells belong to one of 4 companies and are rebranded lol

#

that nelly's one

steel urchin
#

yep

forest edge
#

people say overheats lol

steel urchin
#

thing is, when you watch the nelly vids, they make it out like they created that hardware

#

but, it's clearly a rebrand of older hardware

forest edge
#

I don't like the look of that one but as messed up as it is, it's still one of the better ones aside from what we already got lmao

#

yea it's hikovision or whatever

#

rca sells it, nelly and ezvidz or something

steel urchin
#

i've seen like 5 or 6 companies rebranded it

#

some changed the bodies, most haven't even bothered with that

hushed basalt
#

Hence why it's good to just get a professional poe camera and a zigbee button a lot of the time

forest edge
#

well there is only like 4 video doorbell companies hogging the market, and each has thier shit rebranded so many times you can't tell what is what lol

steel urchin
#

i'm just not going to shell out $600 for all that crap

#

for a doorbell

wet pilot
#

its like jasco for some of the zwave stuff

steel urchin
#

yeah but at least they have licensing hoops to jump through

#

i wouldn't even know where to begin on how to wire the front door for POE

wet pilot
#

drillydrilly hole

steel urchin
#

my wires came out of a super tiny itty bitty hole, i had to drill some holes under it and use my tiniest chisel to clean it out so the wires would fit somewhere when i put the amcrest in place

forest edge
#

lol

#

yea that shit is for remodel or new house construct

#

I wouldn't even try and do mine

steel urchin
#

yeah, this house i didn't get any say in the build :S

#

or i wouldn't have this shitty knockdown texture

forest edge
#

sweet amazon just dropped off my replacement doorbell

steel urchin

what?!

HOW?

he'll just have a different url

forest edge

need to figure out what i want to do cause just replacing it seems like a bad idea lol

hushed basalt
#

Where I live most houses are double brick with cavity

#

So running things on external walls isn't too painful

steel urchin
#

well i'm replacing it to give it a shot... but if you see something that screams "buy me" please let me know...

forest edge
#

the only thing about this thing that screamed that was rstp and 89 bucks lol

#

nothing else has both of those

wet pilot

$20 too expensive to be nice

scenic radish

forest edge

@scenic radish you got that light automated yet?

steel urchin

that ebay one you said was the same?

#

or was it the same as the nelly one?

forest edge
#

DB1

#

yea

steel urchin
#

ffs my back is killing

#

the nelly, right... i like the lens on that one

forest edge
#

was hikovision or the daula or whateverr

steel urchin
#

huh.. the hikvision i've seen looks like a mace spray

#

the poe one

forest edge
#

nelly says DB2 maybe it's an updated version and not the one that overheats lol

steel urchin
#

i almost pulled the trigger on it, but i'm pissed about having put more holes in the trim board

#

119-10 right now

#

but... digital chime which would take up an outlet :S

#

it's astounding how this got such great reviews

forest edge
#

they don't support rtsp on that (yet)

#

course you like the app stuff so that shouldn't bother you lol

#

I like some of the reviews on some of these cameras, posts a picture of a blob that looks like a person with the review of 5 stars, images look great!

steel urchin

i mean i DO want a stream, seems more flexible

steel urchin

yep

that and/or constantly hitting the broken api

#

it was kinda warm to the touch, but not sure how shielded it is

it's free returns for me, i'm going to try it a few times to see how it goes.. might get one that lasts?

forest edge

lol try not using rtsp for a few days and see what happens

if it lives then try rtsp and dee if it dies

i just clicked on 104 without making a snashot lol

#

naw, I have other stuff.. I take a very slow approach

modest sentinel
#

i can appreciate that... looking at my tank right now I definitely want to take it slow

proper swift
#

I'm not the "throw a bunch in and then chase fixing it" type. I'm the slowly add and rebalance

narrow marten
#

How long has the tank been running?

proper swift
#

Technically 10 years, but there was a massive crash a few years ago. in it's current incarnation 1 year. (the crash was a house flood that took out all the support equipment, a mains pipe burst)

modest sentinel
#

ah that sucks, sorry to hear that

proper swift
#

things occur.

modest sentinel
#

"the glass is already broken"

narrow marten
#

Shit! No fun... it takes me months to get a fresh tank right, I can’t imagine what salt tanks take

proper swift
#

off2bed. 🙂 buy an apex. you won't regret it.

modest sentinel
#

will do, thanks for the tip

#

I made note to reach out to you if/when I do

clear ferry
#

@proper swift @dull chasm also loves tanks, you too can probably exchange a few ideas, I know he has put a lot of effort into them

steel urchin
#

#

wet pilot
#

forest edge
#

oh wow

wet pilot
#

with no viable replacement

tidal bronze
#

Yep pretty sad

forest edge
#

ew that means they could kill, kill it at any time then

tidal bronze
#

Let's hope not

forest edge
#

i have that first gen chromecast as well, looks just like that lol

wet pilot
#

i think i still have one somewhere

#

i gave at least one of them away to family

tidal bronze
#

I have 2 left. Can't join speaker groups

forest edge
#

I bought one hoping it was going to be more than what it was and over time they made it do less lol

#

cause you use to be able to launch apps from it

tidal bronze
#

5 or 6 Alexa minis as paper weights as well

forest edge

tidal bronze
#

I am looking for my other one.

#

Got a spare 12" sub that I want to sync low end in the living area.

wet pilot
#

heh

tidal bronze
#

With delay adjustment possibilities are limitless

#

Plan is to sync 5 subs on 3 different platforms all using CCA lol

wet pilot
#

all about that bass

tidal bronze
#

Yep. Not using Klipsch wireless link.

forest edge
#

@steel urchin you leaving your brick powered all night? i disconnected mine, don't want to risk any spazing waking me up in the middle of the night lol

steel urchin
#

I cut the power to the transformer for now

#

Sucks cuz I'm about to head out of town and don't have even a basic doorbell

#

But what would wake you up?

wet pilot
#

🔥

forest edge
#

my phone alarm wakes me up just fine

#

oh he's asking

wet pilot
#

fire would hopefully wake you up

forest edge
#

I dunno the chime spazing maybe

#

in the middle of the night cause the doorbell is freaking out

steel urchin
#

Oh damn yours is going crazy?

valid halo
#

Fire is polite. It doesn't wake me

steel urchin
#

Mine just stopped

forest edge
#

NO, it's not, i don't want to risk it lol

valid halo
#

You're being prepare and not taking risk

#

Good

#

👍

wet pilot
#

🔥

#

😄

valid halo
#

Fire and lots of it is your solution to everything phnx

wet pilot
#

wish i could send some to some of my customers

valid halo
#

"package for you." "oh boy what is I-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

steel urchin
#

eh i just rigged the basic doorbell to it... i'm just worried about breaking the wires... solid copper and like 18awg

#

i've bent them so many times afraid they'll snap... might solder some stranded wire and heat shrink it so i can keep messing with stuff and not mess up the original wiring

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
#

the wire is coiled up above, there's probably what feels like 10ft coiled up right under the transformer, but i dunno if it's stapled or not... might try seeing if i can pull more out and go from there

forest edge
#

nothing wrong with soldering stranded wire onto the solid coper. it's all low voltage so it's not like it's gonna melt lol

clear ferry
wet pilot
#

that fire is better

forest edge
#

it's weird, literally the other day I made a comment about how to make an entity remain when it doesn't exist (ie unplugged) after a restart, i get my wish today and now i'm annoyed at having to "clean" entities that were a blessing to be auto removed prior lol

wet pilot
#

rofl

#

can't win

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot mine are always better OKTrump

wet pilot
#

@forest edge 1 6-pack plox for the complaint 😛

wet pilot

gilded burrow
#

how does one go about suggesting a new room?

#

I think there should be a room to discuss image processing / video analytics

clear ferry
#

it should fit in that room

#

for all the offical components

gilded burrow
#

but wont that include people fixing up basic issues with cameras

#

asking for recommendations etc

#

this would be specifically for using cameras with image processing / machine learning

#

it would be nice if the chatter regarding tools such as deepstream was all in one place

#

I know of at least 3 of us (and ive barely looked) that are building similar components

clear ferry
gilded burrow
#

its a visibility issue, that would make it worse

#

edge AI is just taking off

#

and loads of people will be adding corals and jetson nanos

clear ferry
#

edge AI has been the talk for years already, if it is taking off is another discussion 😉 I started discussing it with developers atleast 4 years ago

#

but implementations however are slow

gilded burrow
#

hitting mainstream is what I mean

#

affordable, available, usable

#

particularly regarding camera analytics

#

its such a rich source of sensor info

#

thats previously been off limits unless you wanted to violate your privacy

#

I think the downsides of having an extra room are outweighed by increasing collaboration for developers working on similar topics

clear ferry
#

I don't see the need, but maybe mods do, just don't ping them or they'll make @ocean mirage out of you

#

🤣

gilded burrow
#

who handles most of the discord setup?

#

I'd rather just ping one person than a whole team
