you don't havve something like a drone for too long without finding ameans of making it hazardous to everyone's life lol

literally unusable

so the "sunflowers" have 24 h battery backup, but the system itself only have 1h runtime on backup... πŸ€”

forest edge
#

they prob expect your home to have a backup generator or something so that part becomes mute lol

strange vapor
#

They could probably go with a similar system as is been tested with farms here. Basisally an "avary" in the yard with multiple Drone docking points, and the drones can go off on their own and check on cattle with IR cameras.

forest edge
#

if you had monitor drones i think havving a backup means of power would be a given lol

strange vapor
#

You don't need that many drones with modern batteries to keep a fairly constant watch.

i'd have like 100 of them.. the buzzing noise alone would scare everyone away before they even got to see them

it blows my minds people are ok with HOAs i'd never live somewhere like that, i hate how all houses tend to look the exact same and its boring and no shade to be seen etc. like how you tell people where you live, the blue house between the 6 other blue houses XD LOL

i don't like the ideas of HOAs for houses but they're necessary for condos

inner vault
#

I think it's mostly in like subdivisions all built by the same contractors, and HOA fees go to stuff like curb maintenance and beautification things? like above and beyond what the city would actually do

scenic radish
#

Depends. In HOAs for multi-family housing like condos part of it goes toward exterior maintenance

river rune
#

When I was mowing lawns in Tennessee we had a bunch of people who lived in HOAs and if we were a day late mowing their lawn for some reason (like rain) a lot of them would get calls from their HOA complaining... And if one stripe was just slightly crooked in the yard we would hear about it.

inner vault

yeah, I mean in a condo it makes sense, there's a lot of shared infrastructure and such to maintain

scenic radish

@river rune that's ridiculous

This seems like the best place to go off topic. I have never dabbled in real "physical" home automation before, but have a NAS running a docker swarm with automation for sonarr, plex etc.

I just bought myself a z wave plus stick and am seemingly starting to come to the conclusion that a combined stick with zigbee or just a smarthub might have been better.

Anyway to my question - For someone with basically a dumb home. Would you recommend smart switches over bulbs for the common areas? What protocol and what devices would you run if so?

Also this has probably been discussed here before and I checked reddit for the best off but what are your favorite automations? :>

boreal pewter
#

river rune
#

@dawn flame personally I would recommend switches over bulbs for retrofitting an existing system. It will save you quite a bit of money in the long run if you have a lot of ceiling lights.
I like using full color bulbs for lamps though, just for fun πŸ˜‰ I have one behind my computer monitors that stays red most of the time but when I want to change it up I can easily do so.

And the beauty of something like Home Assistant is you can use any protocol. Personally I have mostly Zigbee devices with a few Z-Wave and a couple WiFi (I am getting more WiFi devices, hopefully they will get delivered today 🀞) so it really comes down to preference. I prefer opensource so Zigbee and WiFi (with devices that can be flashed with custom firmware) are my preference.

dawn flame
#

Thanks for the lengthy responce @river rune. I'm kind off frowning upon wifi as I don't want to add more bandwidth eating units. Do you have a zigbee usb stick on your HA or do you use an external hub? I am really leaning on getting a samsung smart things hub but the whole must be connected is off putting.

I was thinking the same thing for floor lamps. Get smart switches for common rooms and get some floor lamps that have smart bulbs. Then just create a protocol in ha that leverages both in the best way without hindering me. πŸ™‚

#

Do you have any recommendations for gear?

river rune
#

I was using a SmartThings hub but like you said having to be connected is a pain, it also creates lag in some automations and commands. I made the full switch to HA about 2 weeks ago, so I am definately not an expert on HA. But I can tell you what worked for me.

I have a single dongle which does Z-Wave and Zigbee (Nortek something. I can DM you a link if you want) and it worked flawlessly to setup in HA. It shows up as 2 separate devices and you just have to configure the HA plugins to use the right one. For me Z-Wave was /dev/ttyUSB0 and Zigbee was /dev/ttyUSB1 but not sure if that is always the case but it probably is.

forest edge
#

after doing these shellys I gotta vote against smart switches personally lol

#

but it's all use pref

dawn flame
#

Found the nortek dongle. Thanks for the tips. πŸ™‚

#

Just gotta see about returning my already bought one xD

river rune
#

It also depends on how much you like to tinker... I love building stuff with Arduinos and NodeMCUs so doing stuff with shellys and sonoffs is fun for me.

forest edge
#

well in this case there is 0 tinker

#

its plug and play

river rune
#

You can also just get prebuilt switches and just swap out your existing switch and wire it up... I have a GE 3-way Z-Wave switch for my living room lights

dawn flame
#

I was looking at some GE Z-wave switches tbh

#

I don't even know what shelly is πŸ™‚

forest edge
#

my argument for that would be, if your removing a switch anyways the shelly/sonoff is the smarter choice simply because you retain control regardless

dawn flame
#

As does the smart switches though?

forest edge
#

smart switches when they die, that's it, you lost control

#

when these things die you still maintain control over the lights

#

plus with them hosting thier own firmware unlike most smart switches it's true local, don't even need to be hooked to a network for the benifits

#

most smart switches require an outside source for schedules, ect

river rune
#

Yeah, that is the benefit of those (which is why I have some of them ordered too πŸ˜‰ )

dawn flame
#

I can see the argument for that.. On the other hand I don't want a congested wifi network. I have a nas that is on 24/7 with a back up. Seems highly situational to need true local imo. Again I'm not "in the scene" at all so I could be wrong...

forest edge
#

yea if your wanting zigbee/zwave switches you'll havve to go with a smart switch

river rune
#

It's preference πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I like the local control as well. And with MQTT if my RPi that is running HA ever dies I can just fire up a mqtt server on my laptop and still have some semblance of automated control.

river rune
#

Shelly is European iirc

forest edge
#

shelly is not cheap chinese lol

dawn flame
#

Cheap Swedish it seems xD

forest edge
#

I wouldn't call it cheap, considering the saftey protect in the 1pm's is pretty decent. smart switches don't evven have that

river rune
#

I would say the Shelly 1pm that is UL listed is probably about the same build/safety wise as the majority of smart switches you can get in the US.

forest edge
#

the ul is rated up above 20amp with a 16amp listing lol

#

i realize there's a lot more to ONVIF

cosmic flint
#

FWIW, i'm finding the HA + hass.io setup pretty tedious. Just my opinion from a user experience perspective.

wet pilot
#

hassio is intended to be an appliance

cosmic flint
#

I can find some integrations on the website, but in the dashboard the same ones aren't there. Even if they require manual installation, having them listed with a link would be greatly beneficial.

#

I just meant setting up my devices and installing integrations in general.

wet pilot
#

not all integrations on the site support the methods that allow them to be shown on the "add integration" list

#

that is a relatively new feature

cosmic flint
#

And its information like that, that wasn't said to me anywhere..

#

Its a learn as you go, and not a very good first impression for people who aren't as technically inclined.

wet pilot
#

ones that support it usually tell you in their docs

#

ones that don't, don't mention it

cosmic flint
#

I'm not trying to be insensitive. I just wouldn't recommend this platform to say, someone like my mother.

#

Things could definitely be a little more clear.

wet pilot
#

this is also not a GA product yet

#

i wouldn't trust my mother with it

#

but i wouldn't trust her with smartthings either

cosmic flint
#

fair points. lol

#

I think I'm getting the "gist" of HA. HA is primarily a platform, along with integrations which act as separate programs/services and communicate with HA. The HA dashboard is just a fancy wrapper allowing you to do the dirty stuff more quickly and to give you an overview of the state of things. To do some of the more advanced integrations, you have to drop down to configuration files. That about right?

wet pilot
#

eh, not really

steel urchin
#

it's literally ON the screen when you add integrations

cosmic flint
#

@steel urchin what is?

wet pilot
#

the integrations thing is very new. The various platforms need to be updated to support it. The most popular integrations are updated first as people who care enough about them will step up to do the work

steel urchin
#

my build is completely broken, but i swear i saw copy that said "Not all integrations are available through the UI"

cosmic flint
#

Not everything is possible to configure from the UI yet, but we're working on it.

#

But that doesnt mean they aren't even in the list.. not even a landing page.

#

Perhaps the wording should be changed to be more clear?

wet pilot
#

open a PR

cosmic flint
#

So quick question, how do the integrations work with HA? I couldnt really find any documentation stating how everything works together. There may be some info to be gained from reading the API but thats generally much more low level than what I'm looking for.

steel urchin
#

i dunno, that's exactly how i took it? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ but yeah it's a simple copy change... PR should be easy to submit

cosmic flint
#

Something like, "Not all integrations are available in the UI yet, but we're working on it".

wet pilot
#

oh

#

inb4'd

steel urchin
#

you got got!

cosmic flint
#

That would cover more cases than just "configuration", it also includes installation.

wet pilot
#

english isn't the primary language of all the developers. also english is hard

cosmic flint
#

@steel urchin @wet pilot thats exactly what I was looking for!

#

Thanks.

wet pilot
#

bad language is bad

#

needs optimization

steel urchin
#

You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.

cosmic flint
#

Please do take these things as constructive criticism. It's stuff im learning as a complete HA noobie.

wet pilot
#

fresh eyes can clean up a lot of things

#

but the route to getting it fixed isn't by complaining on this board

velvet horizonBOT
cosmic flint
#

Good point.

wet pilot
#

opening an issue on one of those boards is how things get fixed

#

or opening a feature request on the forums

#

alternatively, if you are so inclined, you can fix it yourself and open a PR

steel urchin
#

PR is the most likely to make it's way in

wet pilot
#

eh, depends

cosmic flint
#

Once I familiarize myself with the project more, i'll take my list of issues I've run into and help out.

steel urchin
#

otherwise it goes into a backlog that may never be met

wet pilot
#

feature requests can be a black-hole unless someone who is also interested decides to pick it up

#

bugs get triaged and prioritized

steel urchin
#

that's what i mean, you said it better

wet pilot
#

but it depends on what it affects though

steel urchin
#

i told you i was taking shots after every HA boot failure 🀣

wet pilot
#

some integrations get abandoned

#

haha

clear ferry
#

I should move from Apache frontend server to nginx proxy

wet pilot
#

DOIT

cosmic flint
#

One other question, that I didnt see the answer to. When I update the configuration.yaml file, do I need to restart HA for changes to take effect?

wet pilot
#

yes*
*for the most part

steel urchin
#

yeah like 10 years ago 🀣

clear ferry
#

But, I have to understand the syntax of nginx

steel urchin
#

i restart every time i do anything

wet pilot
#

certain things can be re-loaded on the fly

cosmic flint
#

Generally a good idea to restart anyway?

clear ferry
#

It's just jibberish

steel urchin
#

nginx syntax is a BITCH

clear ferry
#

Agreed

wet pilot
#

isn't it all LUA?

steel urchin
#

and there's multiple ways to scope things, it's so annoying

#

no

#

it's like a proprietary parsed format

clear ferry
#

Because my current Apache frontend docker is not very stable when I restart πŸ˜›

#

How long would I take to move to a linuxserver docker nginx I wonder ThonkEyes

wet pilot
#

@cosmic flint "depends" Automations/scripts/groups (and a few others) can be hot-reloaded via configuration > Server Controls

#

anything else would need a restat

boreal pewter
#

10 seconds maybe atxblyat

steel urchin
wet pilot
#

however

#

.check @cosmic flint

velvet horizonBOT
#

@cosmic flint Always run the configuration check command when you make changes. Don't trust the UI check - it misses some problems.

steel urchin
#

eyes bleeding emoji

clear ferry
#

@boreal pewter and 12 hours to translate my config? πŸ˜›

#

All my config is the same for all sites, just has different domains and different redirects

boreal pewter
#

@clear ferry that could it be. I wouldn't do that tho, the container ships like 50 pre-configured reverse-proxy confs and you can easily copy paste adapt them for ANY service

clear ferry
#

So if I understand the syntax it should be fast

boreal pewter
#

Yeah

steel urchin
#

the LSIO letsencrypt docker has a ton of examples of upstream reverse proxies

cosmic flint
#

Ahh, thats another thing that wasn't clear to me. Where do I run commands? In the shell of the HA device itself (or through SSH). Do I run them under root? Do I type "login" for the Hass.io, as I did for setting a static IP.

wet pilot
#

i don't use that install method

steel urchin
#

hassio is it's own beast

cosmic flint
#

Most of the integrations I'm installing are through HA itself. I've only installed two Hass.io plugins.

wet pilot
#

i have an alias to run the command on my box

cosmic flint
#

I'm honestly not seeing what Hass.io provides for me yet?

wet pilot
#

an appliance πŸ˜›

cosmic flint
#

How so? Does HA not come with a UI?

wet pilot
#

it gives you an all in one thing that you don't really have to worry about

steel urchin
#

consider it like an OS

#

addons are like a package manager

wet pilot
#

you don't need to care about updating the OS and any of the other components, its all provided

cosmic flint
#

Gotcha.

#

Coming from a dev/engineering background, I'm fairly used to running linux commands.

steel urchin
#

vs with docker/etc you piecemeal everything together yourself

cosmic flint
#

I see integrations as micro-services.

hushed basalt
#

Go traefik

steel urchin
#

addons are more like ms

hushed basalt
#

Change container endpoints dynamically

steel urchin
#

integrations are more like plugins

#

they directly integrate

#

microservices are meant to be run isolated

cosmic flint
#

From my understanding, integrations are in docker containers. They're isolated.

steel urchin
#

in theory

#

the containers mean nothing outside of hassio, however

wet pilot
#

integrations are executed by HA. Hassio addons run alongside

cosmic flint
#

Ahhh. This is all making a little more sense.

#

That's why Node-RED is an addon, because it's technically a very own self powered service (using node.js)

steel urchin
#

in microservices, your ms should run independent of any other service, and have it's own high availability (a different HA)

hushed basalt
#

@clear ferry go traefik

wet pilot
#

yup

hushed basalt
#

Embrace the docker

steel urchin
#

exactly

cosmic flint
#

In theory, I could add a homebridge addon, so that way meanwhile I figure all this out.. my house isnt without automation while I migrate.

wet pilot
#

yup, but if you're already familar with docker, you can drop hassio and add HA to your docker stack

steel urchin
#

i've been hanging out here for almost 3 weeks, just started down my own path 3 days ago after reading and reading... somehow completely fubar'd my whole world

#

after building alexa skills n shit

#

🀣

wet pilot
#

πŸ˜›

#

you've had shit luck

steel urchin
#

all because of the mobile app somehow mucking things up for me... i'm sure it was an unintended workflow of some sort, but i can't pinpoint where it went wrong

cosmic flint
#

Been there, done that. It's no fun.

wet pilot
#

that's what you get for jumping to the pre-release version of the mobile app πŸ˜›

steel urchin
#

excuse me z-snaps i was pushed into it

wet pilot
#

haha

cosmic flint
#

That's probably why it took me so long to get Hass.io installed....

cosmic flint
#

I used the mobile app, and while the webpage was loaded and Hass.io was doing its install.. it killed the network and things didnt get installed correctly. HA dashboard wouldnt load after that. Just a blank page with a few buttons

steel urchin
#

maria is going to grow up to do great things

#

also, one VERY important thing to remember... it's not 1.0 yet

cosmic flint
#

I had a feeling it was an install related thing.. because my network usage was quite high while the landing/loading page of HA was displayed, and after that it went dead.

clear ferry
#

Just glancing the lsio nginx I see no option to specify multiple domains ThonkEyes

wet pilot
#

should look at their letsencrypt if you use that service

steel urchin
#

you specify a server [block] per domain iirc

wet pilot
#

they apparently ship examples of common reverse proxy targets

#

yup

#

and subdomain

steel urchin
#

well in http security a subdomain can be treated as a domain really

wet pilot
#

so foo.domain.me and domain.me get different servers

steel urchin
#

yep

wet pilot
#

but domain.me/bar is a location that can live under domain.me

steel urchin
#

that's a path descriptor iirc

wet pilot
#

location

steel urchin
#

a location descriptor, rather

#

yep

wet pilot
#

hence the choice of words πŸ˜„

steel urchin
#

i ❀️ you

#

keep it up

wet pilot
#

haha i have my moments

clear ferry
#

But, I forward 80 and 443 to a single server today, then the rest happens from their on, so all domains go to the same frontend

#

Is that not possible with the lsio ThonkEyes

wet pilot
#

it is

steel urchin
#

you can chain nginx servers if you want

#

not desirable, but you can

clear ferry
steel urchin
#

it's kinda like port forwarding in a way

#

if you can guarantee your proxies to exist, you can just use proxy_pass, otherwise you can define upstreams that may have low availability for fallbacks or round robins

#

you can get weird with it

wet pilot
#

i define upstreams

#

that way i can use docker's dns for hostnames

steel urchin
#

i'm trying to remember how we did it at one place.. we dynamically defined upstreams based on containers

#

here we go

#

go templates blow, but this was fun to fuck with

wet pilot
#

this is all you really need

#
                set $upstream_gogs gogs;
                proxy_pass http://$upstream_gogs:3000;```
steel urchin
#

if you have a finite setup, sure

#

but in the moment i was dealing with upwards of a few thousand microservices

wet pilot
#

oh you're saying for spinning up n number of crap at any given moment

right

we had about 2 million permutations of the setup

rain swift

you are damn lucky to have a company pay for your phone but let you not answer their calls after work hours.

#

you must be really good at what you do.

clear ferry
#

I feel more gen x πŸ€”

#

after hours calls is pretty frowned upon in european work culture anyway

#

unless you are in an on duty roster

#

but then we get paid to answer

valid halo
#

So it's like an american thing to be answering work emails/calls off hours?

clear ferry
#

I do if I feel like it, or if it is a good collegue

rain swift
#

must be nice, but i'm not willing to take all of the downsides of living in any country that isn't america lol

clear ferry
#

if it is sales I usually go /ignore

rain swift

i'm an hourly contractor so I don't have a work phone anyways

The rent on those is outrageous

rain swift

lmao

#

i'd never own a condo, whats the point

#

I want a yard at least, and preferably a few acres

scenic radish

Couldn't afford a house

It's nice to not have to maintain the outside?

I pay others to do that lol

speaking of equity, I have like $17000 in stock somewhere

I need to figure out how to cash it out

stock and equity is so upper class or murica

I just get random amounts of stock every year 🀣

proper swift

clear ferry

I blocked it, and it still responds to HA

proper swift
#

everyone knows emacs is superior in every way to vi

brisk glen
#

@clear ferry clearly you didn’t

#

Or you have a holy firewall

clear ferry
#

Yes, pfsense is the holy handgrenade of Antioch

valid halo
#

I thought emacs was an operating system

clear ferry
#

@valid halo semantics

valid halo
#

I remember from my time using it

#

hitting ctrl-x all the time in the tutorial made me never want to use it again

brisk glen
#

You need to put it on its own vlan if you want to isolate it locally

clear ferry
#

@brisk glen can't see the map anymore in the mi home app, and all my Xiaomi devices are offline there too, I blocked the gateway at the same time

brisk glen
#

All you did was block it at the router/firewall level

#

It can still do shit at layer 2

clear ferry
#

I need to put it in its own L2 because blocking it talking over L3 isn't enough? That... Sounds very interesting...

brisk glen
#

Yes

#

Put it in its own subnet

#

Block that subnet from all lans

clear ferry
#

How is it taking over L2 when there is a L3 device in between? That sounds... Improbable

brisk glen
#

It’s not routing

#

It’s switching

clear ferry
#

Are you saying it is piggybacking on other devices?

brisk glen
#

So it’s directly connected to the pΓ³sense thing?

#

(Yay iOS autocorrect)

#

Or is it on a wireless AP that’s on a switch

clear ferry
#

Ap - switch L2 - switch L2 - router - wan

brisk glen
#

pfsense is your router?

clear ferry
#

Yes

brisk glen
#

yah, its communicating over layer 2

#

the router is your gateway

#

never needs to touch the gateway when its on the same subnet

#

make a block all lans group

clear ferry
#

I have worked with networking for 20 years, and what you are saying just doesn't make sense, if you are saying it is still calling home πŸ˜›

brisk glen
#

um..

clear ferry
#

Yes, I already do that by default in pfsense

brisk glen
#

if it does not need to reach the gateway, then how can pfsense block across your lan it if its not handling the traffic

brisk glen
#

192.168.1.44/24 can talk to 192.168.1.54/24 without a router

#

arp request who has this ip... arp reply ME! ME! here is my mac

#

layer 2

#

none if that involves the router, its broadcasts

#

thus why you need to shove the device on its own subnet, now it has to go through the router to be routed to the other lans

scenic radish
#

Ngl the first time I used tshark I legit laughed out loud when I saw

Who has 10.0.0.1? Tell 10.0.0.x
brisk glen
#

lol

clear ferry
#

But are you saying it still phones home, or that it still probes my network πŸ˜›

scenic radish
#

I seriously thought it was hilarious
