probably blanket falls under anti-trap laws beyond specifically anything else
like it's illegal to "home alone" your house pretty much everywhere
RUNTIME ON BACKUP BATTERY
1 h
literally unusable
so the "sunflowers" have 24 h battery backup, but the system itself only have 1h runtime on backup... π€
they prob expect your home to have a backup generator or something so that part becomes mute lol
They could probably go with a similar system as is been tested with farms here. Basisally an "avary" in the yard with multiple Drone docking points, and the drones can go off on their own and check on cattle with IR cameras.
if you had monitor drones i think havving a backup means of power would be a given lol
You don't need that many drones with modern batteries to keep a fairly constant watch.
i'd have like 100 of them.. the buzzing noise alone would scare everyone away before they even got to see them
bizzing
lol
bizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
i'd sic'em on Tediore
reee
if we're going full (m)(b)illionaire house probably has basement diesel generator with a pipe running out into the water to be refueled remotely by tanker
true american here, and I think many people would be scared to mess with your place if they saw a couple of drones running a pattern around the property.
run drones in shifts, while some patrol, others charge
would cause a neighborhood conversation for sure
deffo agains HOA rules π
JFK!
FDR!
hahaha, when I buy a house, it won't be any place with an HOA
nobody is gonna tell me what to do with my place. π
ima put up at least 2 PTZ's outside at the corners of the house so I have 360 coverage...
it blows my minds people are ok with HOAs i'd never live somewhere like that, i hate how all houses tend to look the exact same and its boring and no shade to be seen etc. like how you tell people where you live, the blue house between the 6 other blue houses XD LOL
i don't like the ideas of HOAs for houses but they're necessary for condos
I don't think it's a thing around here except for condos
I only know of HOA's from the horror stories
HOA?
Home Owner Annoyance
Home Owner's Association
Blue haired old ladies telling you how short your grass has to be...
A bunch of people who have a heart attack if your grass 1mm too tall
lol
and don't you try to fuck em over. They use calipers to measure
awwww but its fun to make blanket statements that are crowd pleasing
It's true. They aren't all like that... But I would probably say most are
that's true, some also decide what colours you can and can't use or breeds of flowers you can plant
Thankfully mine isn't
Ah, don't have to deal with that π
I think it's mostly in like subdivisions all built by the same contractors, and HOA fees go to stuff like curb maintenance and beautification things? like above and beyond what the city would actually do
Depends. In HOAs for multi-family housing like condos part of it goes toward exterior maintenance
When I was mowing lawns in Tennessee we had a bunch of people who lived in HOAs and if we were a day late mowing their lawn for some reason (like rain) a lot of them would get calls from their HOA complaining... And if one stripe was just slightly crooked in the yard we would hear about it.
yeah, I mean in a condo it makes sense, there's a lot of shared infrastructure and such to maintain
@river rune that's ridiculous
like roofs and hallways
Yea Condos it makes sense
but then there's also the "probably" racist origins of HOAs, keeping up property value by keeping "undesirables" out
Looks good to me... He was just leaving you room to wire up a sonoff in there π
lol wow
wait, there's really anti-trap laws like that? did not know! picks up booby traps
Booby Traps are indeed illegal
(.) (.)
@scenic radish that used to mean boobs in the dial up days π
that's what i meant it to be lol
hahahaha
Booby traps π
my coworker behind me is chewing with her mouth open and it's driving me up the wall
I have been about ready to destroy my Arduino because it refused to send MQTT messages when I pushed a button and then it would send some randomly on it's own... I have been trying to figure it out for about 2 hours last night and 1.5 today, and I just realized that I had accidentally deleted the pinMode(PIN, INPUT_PULLUP) lines for all my buttons. π€¦ββοΈ
It works perfectly now
you hate to see it
Now I just have to see if I can get the auto discovery messages to send... I think if I try to send more than one it is running out of memory.

funny thing, i saw the other day a headline about a show called Joey? Apparently it was leaked and was so bad it pretty much failed from the beginning
I think that show made 3-4 seasons some years ago
Yeah. Itβs why spinoffs have such a bad name nowadays.
ruined it for everyone
Friends π€’
They killed Joey (the show, not the character lol) half way through the second season... It was terrible
Ah, right (was actually thinking of Episodes) π
why is the max length of code post only 15 lines?
finally can fetch the battery status from my oral b brush
lol wireless toothbrushes..
guess you could keep track on if the kids are brushing thier teeth
my tooth brush is electric and bluetooth.
I only used it for the timer, and the battery died. I tried the app on my phone but was like meh who cares.
@eager crest I used https://github.com/noble/noble
but I have the 9200w so extracting the correct information was a bit weird
yes but sending my mom voice notifications when she's brushing her teeth sounds awesome
I crowdfunded the Oclean X Pro
This seems like the best place to go off topic. I have never dabbled in real "physical" home automation before, but have a NAS running a docker swarm with automation for sonarr, plex etc.
I just bought myself a z wave plus stick and am seemingly starting to come to the conclusion that a combined stick with zigbee or just a smarthub might have been better.
Anyway to my question - For someone with basically a dumb home. Would you recommend smart switches over bulbs for the common areas? What protocol and what devices would you run if so?
Also this has probably been discussed here before and I checked reddit for the best off but what are your favorite automations? :>
Will arrive somewhen π
i always got the newest oral b cause my mother works for a dentalist
I use it to turn off/on the base station based on battery level because i can hear every frickin coil which gets power
looll
i know
I would be worried if not
@dawn flame personally I would recommend switches over bulbs for retrofitting an existing system. It will save you quite a bit of money in the long run if you have a lot of ceiling lights.
I like using full color bulbs for lamps though, just for fun π I have one behind my computer monitors that stays red most of the time but when I want to change it up I can easily do so.
And the beauty of something like Home Assistant is you can use any protocol. Personally I have mostly Zigbee devices with a few Z-Wave and a couple WiFi (I am getting more WiFi devices, hopefully they will get delivered today π€) so it really comes down to preference. I prefer opensource so Zigbee and WiFi (with devices that can be flashed with custom firmware) are my preference.
Thanks for the lengthy responce @river rune. I'm kind off frowning upon wifi as I don't want to add more bandwidth eating units. Do you have a zigbee usb stick on your HA or do you use an external hub? I am really leaning on getting a samsung smart things hub but the whole must be connected is off putting.
I was thinking the same thing for floor lamps. Get smart switches for common rooms and get some floor lamps that have smart bulbs. Then just create a protocol in ha that leverages both in the best way without hindering me. π
Do you have any recommendations for gear?
I was using a SmartThings hub but like you said having to be connected is a pain, it also creates lag in some automations and commands. I made the full switch to HA about 2 weeks ago, so I am definately not an expert on HA. But I can tell you what worked for me.
I have a single dongle which does Z-Wave and Zigbee (Nortek something. I can DM you a link if you want) and it worked flawlessly to setup in HA. It shows up as 2 separate devices and you just have to configure the HA plugins to use the right one. For me Z-Wave was /dev/ttyUSB0 and Zigbee was /dev/ttyUSB1 but not sure if that is always the case but it probably is.
after doing these shellys I gotta vote against smart switches personally lol
but it's all use pref
Found the nortek dongle. Thanks for the tips. π
Just gotta see about returning my already bought one xD
It also depends on how much you like to tinker... I love building stuff with Arduinos and NodeMCUs so doing stuff with shellys and sonoffs is fun for me.
You can also just get prebuilt switches and just swap out your existing switch and wire it up... I have a GE 3-way Z-Wave switch for my living room lights
my argument for that would be, if your removing a switch anyways the shelly/sonoff is the smarter choice simply because you retain control regardless
As does the smart switches though?
smart switches when they die, that's it, you lost control
when these things die you still maintain control over the lights
plus with them hosting thier own firmware unlike most smart switches it's true local, don't even need to be hooked to a network for the benifits
most smart switches require an outside source for schedules, ect
Yeah, that is the benefit of those (which is why I have some of them ordered too π )
I can see the argument for that.. On the other hand I don't want a congested wifi network. I have a nas that is on 24/7 with a back up. Seems highly situational to need true local imo. Again I'm not "in the scene" at all so I could be wrong...
yea if your wanting zigbee/zwave switches you'll havve to go with a smart switch
It's preference π€·ββοΈ I like the local control as well. And with MQTT if my RPi that is running HA ever dies I can just fire up a mqtt server on my laptop and still have some semblance of automated control.
Well you can't expect much when you buy really cheap chinese stuff and then hack it to do other things.
Shelly is European iirc
shelly is not cheap chinese lol
Cheap Swedish it seems xD
I wouldn't call it cheap, considering the saftey protect in the 1pm's is pretty decent. smart switches don't evven have that
I would say the Shelly 1pm that is UL listed is probably about the same build/safety wise as the majority of smart switches you can get in the US.
the ul is rated up above 20amp with a 16amp listing lol
your wire will melt before the shelly lol
just make sure your home insurance will cover you if it burns the house down.
Which is what is required for UL listing iirc
so i have a friend that wants to move from vbox to kvm, i pointed him to qemu and he hated it... then i pointed him to virtmanager and it would crash on him a ton... anyone have a preference for someone who hates qemu but is insisting on kvm?
my vm needs have been so little over the years, i'm out of touch with it
Esxi 4 lyfe
is there a free management tool for esxi?
that's fine for him... he just needs a few windows and linux vm's he can mess up
i'll check it out before i pass it on... i know his patience level is pretty low lol... i told him "dude, you're wanting something for free, you need to learn some shit"
I use esxi but I primarilly use docker now days...
yeah i've been in container land for so long i forgot how to vm
π₯₯
the esxi interface is pretty straightforward... I had some bugs with editing the config of running vms but a refresh of the page would fix it when that happened
i told him just go vbox so he did, but he's like "it's sooo sloowwww" i told him get better hardware "but kvm is supposed to be faster" ... like... we're probably NOT talking by magnitudes, but he'll learn eventually
Yeah kvm and esxi are type 2 Hypervisors so they have direct hardware access whereas vbox is a type 1 so everything has to go through the base OS too
remindes me of my fedora vbox pain of today
still not able to turn on a vm with display
It slows them down some but it really depends on what you are doing whether it will be noticeable.
the laptop I use at work slowes down when I copy a file from a>b π
well i'm gonna check it out before i direct him there so i know how to use it, in case he has questions (which i'm sure he will)
but... i have to stop all my vms... hmmm
go open stack π€£
oh hah... well esxi won't work for him (nor me, i don't have a spare system to play with it atm)
didn't realize it was an entire OS
back to the drawing board
Just do ESXi
yeah, i'm just trying to get him a util to manage the kvm's... he didn't like qemu or virtmanager
well virtmanager crashed on him
Get him vagrants π€£
your emote is fishy π
yeah i've had scripts around it i've had to deal with ages ago
but that was another life lol
I (would - when I can finally get vbox running) use them all the time. Mostly for ansible
Vbox π€’
But, Vbox + that other install method seems to make for entertainment
Tiny machines inside machines
The files are ~in~ the computer
Depends which side of the entertainment you're sitting on

anyone good suggestion for a small factor 5v power supply for nodemcu, arduino etc
So is there a way, or a way coming to use the app to do things like disable and enable cell data on your phone with an automation?
damn, the pi4 looks like it actually has decent specs
@tidal bronze yes, I was about to pick something from meanwell but thought someone had a specific product in mind
Can't go wrong with mw
so the security company that is responsible for the "smart home" stuff that came with the house has literally been trying to figure the doorbell out for 2 hours...
anyone knows something about sonoff ifan3, does it have a spare gpio for temp sensor
Yeah any "smart" stuff put into a builder is going to fall into obscurity very quickly
lol well it came with the house
i just need it working for the now, so i can sell it in a few weeks when i'm back in town
doorbell for 2 hours? wtf does this doorbell do?
lol apparently nothing
it's making the chime buzz, but i tested the line and it's getting 16v just fine
it's a "smart" doorbell?
oh lol
i need to find a replacement still.. haven't done hardly any research on it
leaning towwards this myself https://www.nellyssecurity.com/nsc-db2-3mp-wifi-video-doorbell-16gb.html
CAn somone tell me how the sonos sources works...?
I can not figure out where the list is populated from.
find video doorbells that can do local rtsp streaming and don't require some stupid cloud service is a real pain especially when your looking for something that doesn't cost too much over $100.
I want one, I could go over 100 for the right one
ahhh found out... it is the Sonos Favorites in Sonos App
the snapshot service is nice
ugh chromebooks suck
cheap chromebooks sucks. they can be decent with real hardware
Are there any doorbell style raw cameras readily available
raw?
So like a hikvision wall mounted camera
With the lens designed for doorbell height
And two way audio
some place.
I suspect searching for "smart doorbell" would just show that proprietary crap
I like my HP Chromebook 15. Has a Pentium gold processor which is basically a lower binned i3
it'll probably run off in the right direction at least
looks like you can't show your pihole dashboard with an iframe, booo.
its better than watching them run in the rain
Sprinklers are banned during rain season here
So it's not really an issue except for the rare summer rain
Plus better sprinkler heads would help
@scenic radish
ugh now it's dropping below freezing after raining all freaking day
gonna be bumper cars out there shortly
ok we're talking costs with this doorbell shit... if you know of a baller doorbell that you would DIE to have, cost is not a concern, send it to me... I'm going to slap that bill in their faces
we just had an emergency electrician come out and drop a $1500 bill on them, tomorrow is drywall and paint coming out... so i want to hit them as hard as possible
I can invent something and send you an invoice lol
i am trying to use the following in an automation call to service light.turn_on
brightness: >
{% if not state_attr('light.basement_fancy_lamp', 'brightness') == None %} {%
set n = state_attr('light.basement_fancy_lamp', 'brightness') + 25 %} {% if n
255 %}
255
{% else %}
{{ n }}
{% endif %} {% else %} 25 {% endif %}
entity_id: light.basement_fancy_lamp
transition: '1'
but i am getting error :
Error while executing automation automation.basementlights_brighten. Invalid data for call_service at pos 1: expected int for dictionary value @ data['brightness']
Failed to call service light/turn_on. expected int for dictionary value @ data['brightness']
@surreal elk #330944238910963714
@steel urchin what was the emergency electrician for
sorry im a noob at discord used to irc forgot
@surreal elk data_template
Because they somehow managed to fry a low voltage transformer for the doorbell, and they had to run new wiring
And install a new transformer
@midnight adder http://i.imgur.com/tdBqCBi.png i do not understand where to put that
why were they messing with your doorbell to begin with?
@surreal elk whatever. try to onvert these attrs to int then? state_attr('light.basement_fancy_lamp', 'brightness') | int + 25
smth
u need to use another channel too
because it sucks and wasn't working right... they went to go add a receiver to the chime, somehow fried the whole line.. electrician said the tiny wires broke somewhere in the wall
so... here we are
and you can use under developer tools the jinja editor/validator
why do you need tiny wires for the doorbell to begin with
you run around some low voltage line inside the walls over there?
@steel urchin hikvision doorbells are nice and expensive
Need POE though ;)
$250 aud though
@steel urchin how did they toast a 24vac line ?
π€ very strange. Usually if you short out 9vac ~24vac transformers, transformer gets popped but not the cable. It's common to short out the leads when installing bells etc. This is a first that I have come across.
who the hell knows
i'm mad
i'm just repeating what the electrician said, i didn't verify anything.. maybe he just wanted more money lol
i don't care, they paid it, and they're going to continue paying
Perhaps money, nothing to do what actually happened π
gotta love it
is anyone here using iPad 2's for a panel?
I have like 4 or 5 of the things as well as a couple of old Mini 1's I'd love to use but I remember there were issues last time i tried
something about them not being compatible with new code used
yeah i don't want the ring... i've seen lots having problems with that
@restive condor yeah I've got an ipad 2 too
Basically it can't install chrome or safari that's up to date enough
It's the Apple way
hahaha yep, they've been capped at iOS 9
it's because 10 was 64-bit and the 2 and below are a 32-bit CPU
but was just interested to know how people are using them with that limitation
my first preference was to use homepanel but it doesn't work
@steel urchin you said you wanted expensive lol https://blog.ring.com/2017/12/04/cast-your-eyes-on-the-worlds-most-expensive-doorbell/
ROFL holy shit i love it
but, i gotta be somewhat reasonable
i went with the hikvision... now i have to go through the motion of getting the money out of them
filing everything, reporting everything, and they are waiting until they fix the wall, which should be a fun experience
Still a ring.
the diamonds and sapphires and gold give it special powers
the power of flight when someone jacks it lol
Why Jack a ring. You can find door wedges without all that trouble.
I'd jack a 100k ring with diamonds and sapphires and gold lol
I'd even leave a note of Codex's door with the word, "YOINK"
@rain swift I'm using grafana to show pihole stats
never used that before
i don't wanna do the poe route, they likely won't cover all that and i'm not on a venture to go all out for a doorbell
Pfft it's not even mid January and you're already limiting how great a year this could be!
Poe is the best route to take. If they are running cable I would drop 2x cat5
I know, sometimes the last thing you need is yet another project on the todo list

I like the package drop off part of it tho, thats kind fo neat
those get all kinds of bad reviews though because of failure
wait.. fridges? or are you talking about something else?
on no those are "insta front doors" or something.. nvm
i'm sure it is... i've just had a 48hrs
But does it integrate
Amcrest AD110 Doorbell integration with Blue Iris and Home Assistant. I enjoyed this camera and bought myself a 2nd one due to the local control and integration features. You can also utilize Micro SD card storage as well as Cloud Storage.
Amcrest AD110 Video Doorbell - ...
it has rstp
that's kinda neat
oooh nice
good price, as well
might get 2
"yo dawg, i heard you like doorbells"
I don't think amcrest is officially ONVIF
i don't see it listed, just the RTSP
but it doesn't entirely make sense for most doorbells to be ONVIF... PTZ is kinda rare on those aren't they?
i realize there's a lot more to ONVIF
FWIW, i'm finding the HA + hass.io setup pretty tedious. Just my opinion from a user experience perspective.
hassio is intended to be an appliance
I can find some integrations on the website, but in the dashboard the same ones aren't there. Even if they require manual installation, having them listed with a link would be greatly beneficial.
I just meant setting up my devices and installing integrations in general.
not all integrations on the site support the methods that allow them to be shown on the "add integration" list
that is a relatively new feature
And its information like that, that wasn't said to me anywhere..
Its a learn as you go, and not a very good first impression for people who aren't as technically inclined.
I'm not trying to be insensitive. I just wouldn't recommend this platform to say, someone like my mother.
Things could definitely be a little more clear.
this is also not a GA product yet
i wouldn't trust my mother with it
but i wouldn't trust her with smartthings either
fair points. lol
I think I'm getting the "gist" of HA. HA is primarily a platform, along with integrations which act as separate programs/services and communicate with HA. The HA dashboard is just a fancy wrapper allowing you to do the dirty stuff more quickly and to give you an overview of the state of things. To do some of the more advanced integrations, you have to drop down to configuration files. That about right?
eh, not really
it's literally ON the screen when you add integrations
@steel urchin what is?
the integrations thing is very new. The various platforms need to be updated to support it. The most popular integrations are updated first as people who care enough about them will step up to do the work
my build is completely broken, but i swear i saw copy that said "Not all integrations are available through the UI"
Not everything is possible to configure from the UI yet, but we're working on it.
But that doesnt mean they aren't even in the list.. not even a landing page.
Perhaps the wording should be changed to be more clear?
open a PR
So quick question, how do the integrations work with HA? I couldnt really find any documentation stating how everything works together. There may be some info to be gained from reading the API but thats generally much more low level than what I'm looking for.
i dunno, that's exactly how i took it? π€·ββοΈ but yeah it's a simple copy change... PR should be easy to submit
Something like, "Not all integrations are available in the UI yet, but we're working on it".
you got got!
That would cover more cases than just "configuration", it also includes installation.
english isn't the primary language of all the developers. also english is hard
Youβve got to be kidding me. Iβve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. Itβs just common sense.
Please do take these things as constructive criticism. It's stuff im learning as a complete HA noobie.
fresh eyes can clean up a lot of things
but the route to getting it fixed isn't by complaining on this board
Want to see what issues are open (or were open and are now closed)?
Check issues for the backend, issues for the UI, and issues for the documentation.
Good point.
opening an issue on one of those boards is how things get fixed
or opening a feature request on the forums
alternatively, if you are so inclined, you can fix it yourself and open a PR
PR is the most likely to make it's way in
eh, depends
Once I familiarize myself with the project more, i'll take my list of issues I've run into and help out.
otherwise it goes into a backlog that may never be met
feature requests can be a black-hole unless someone who is also interested decides to pick it up
bugs get triaged and prioritized
that's what i mean, you said it better
but it depends on what it affects though
i told you i was taking shots after every HA boot failure π€£
I should move from Apache frontend server to nginx proxy
DOIT
One other question, that I didnt see the answer to. When I update the configuration.yaml file, do I need to restart HA for changes to take effect?
yes*
*for the most part
yeah like 10 years ago π€£
But, I have to understand the syntax of nginx
i restart every time i do anything
certain things can be re-loaded on the fly
Generally a good idea to restart anyway?
It's just jibberish
nginx syntax is a BITCH
Agreed
isn't it all LUA?
and there's multiple ways to scope things, it's so annoying
no
it's like a proprietary parsed format
Because my current Apache frontend docker is not very stable when I restart π
How long would I take to move to a linuxserver docker nginx I wonder
@cosmic flint "depends" Automations/scripts/groups (and a few others) can be hot-reloaded via
> Server Controls
anything else would need a restat
10 seconds maybe atxblyat
@cosmic flint Always run the configuration check command when you make changes. Don't trust the UI check - it misses some problems.
eyes bleeding emoji
@boreal pewter and 12 hours to translate my config? π
All my config is the same for all sites, just has different domains and different redirects
@clear ferry that could it be. I wouldn't do that tho, the container ships like 50 pre-configured reverse-proxy confs and you can easily copy paste adapt them for ANY service
So if I understand the syntax it should be fast
Yeah
the LSIO letsencrypt docker has a ton of examples of upstream reverse proxies
Ahh, thats another thing that wasn't clear to me. Where do I run commands? In the shell of the HA device itself (or through SSH). Do I run them under root? Do I type "login" for the Hass.io, as I did for setting a static IP.
hassio is it's own beast
Most of the integrations I'm installing are through HA itself. I've only installed two Hass.io plugins.
i have an alias to run the command on my box
an appliance π
How so? Does HA not come with a UI?
it gives you an all in one thing that you don't really have to worry about
you don't need to care about updating the OS and any of the other components, its all provided
Gotcha.
Coming from a dev/engineering background, I'm fairly used to running linux commands.
vs with docker/etc you piecemeal everything together yourself
I see integrations as micro-services.
Go traefik
addons are more like ms
Change container endpoints dynamically
integrations are more like plugins
they directly integrate
microservices are meant to be run isolated
From my understanding, integrations are in docker containers. They're isolated.
integrations are executed by HA. Hassio addons run alongside
Ahhh. This is all making a little more sense.
That's why Node-RED is an addon, because it's technically a very own self powered service (using node.js)
in microservices, your ms should run independent of any other service, and have it's own high availability (a different HA)
@clear ferry go traefik
yup
Embrace the docker
exactly
In theory, I could add a homebridge addon, so that way meanwhile I figure all this out.. my house isnt without automation while I migrate.
yup, but if you're already familar with docker, you can drop hassio and add HA to your docker stack
i've been hanging out here for almost 3 weeks, just started down my own path 3 days ago after reading and reading... somehow completely fubar'd my whole world
after building alexa skills n shit
π€£
all because of the mobile app somehow mucking things up for me... i'm sure it was an unintended workflow of some sort, but i can't pinpoint where it went wrong
Been there, done that. It's no fun.
that's what you get for jumping to the pre-release version of the mobile app π
excuse me z-snaps i was pushed into it
haha
I used the mobile app, and while the webpage was loaded and Hass.io was doing its install.. it killed the network and things didnt get installed correctly. HA dashboard wouldnt load after that. Just a blank page with a few buttons
maria is going to grow up to do great things
also, one VERY important thing to remember... it's not 1.0 yet
I had a feeling it was an install related thing.. because my network usage was quite high while the landing/loading page of HA was displayed, and after that it went dead.
Just glancing the lsio nginx I see no option to specify multiple domains
should look at their letsencrypt if you use that service
you specify a server [block] per domain iirc
well in http security a subdomain can be treated as a domain really
so foo.domain.me and domain.me get different servers
yep
but domain.me/bar is a location that can live under domain.me
that's a path descriptor iirc
location
hence the choice of words π
haha i have my moments
But, I forward 80 and 443 to a single server today, then the rest happens from their on, so all domains go to the same frontend
Is that not possible with the lsio
it is

it's kinda like port forwarding in a way
if you can guarantee your proxies to exist, you can just use proxy_pass, otherwise you can define upstreams that may have low availability for fallbacks or round robins
you can get weird with it
i'm trying to remember how we did it at one place.. we dynamically defined upstreams based on containers
here we go
go templates blow, but this was fun to fuck with
this is all you really need
set $upstream_gogs gogs;
proxy_pass http://$upstream_gogs:3000;```
if you have a finite setup, sure
but in the moment i was dealing with upwards of a few thousand microservices
oh you're saying for spinning up n number of crap at any given moment
hm, ATX could be at that level...
imagine trying to wrap your head around that, and dealing with a few trillion dollars worth of client demands
wifey is making me go to bed... have to go bash some skulls on the other house tomorrow morning
good luck!
Anyone online?
no
Boo
π€·ββοΈ
Hey!
Does this project need any volunteer QA work?
Are there any that does not?
I have not seen any that was telling folks to not help out π€·ββοΈ
I just want to change careers and get into QA
https://developers.home-assistant.io/ can be a good start
π€£
Awesome, Thanks
currently 0.104 is in beta, so you can jump on that
QA for any open source project is an interesting place to start
You're going to see more coding styles, and personality styles, than you'll hopefully experience in a commercial setting π
I am an interesting person π
In my defence I did not read that line before posting the link
(and by styles, I mean argumentative antisocial flaming assholes)
So typical developers then
Eh, in a commercial setting those tend to become unemployed
Hostile working environment (at least over this side of the pond) tends to get HR paying attention
That's terse, not antisocial π
Some of the unemployed devs in my community are interesting cats
And not in a good way
π: π©
I am a music teacher
This is a hobby, but most folks here (this server, in general) aren't coders
Are you just cybertransients?
I'm a CyberJOAT
Eh, you lot are outnumbered by the few thousand folks who can barely install HA @light trout @hushed basalt
π
But they just come here, ask how to install hassio in docker, then leave
function DoCode {
Copy()
Paste()
Adjust()
}
DoCode()
Or come back an hour later asking how to install docker
I just want to fix one bug and claim I have been working on this project for a year and than get a 60k a year job. J/K
but not really
There are 1500+ "bugs" to choose from, go nuts
I already found one
now take 50 more
This Discord server is (mostly) equal quantities of help and snark
Do any of you actually use HA?
For a bit over 3 years
Somedays (most of them) the snark has a higher %
I have a few instanses running, have had that for almost 3y, but using it... I gues not π
Its a bit of a clusterfuck
Most of us spend hundreds of hours of working on HA to save us the hassle of turning on light switches :
:D
Ah, another person who's watched the right films...
It's like writing scripts to automate stuff at work π
One to oh FFS
I had all my bulbs (18) changed to Tradfri, and controlled them with automations after about a half year they all stopped working, after that I mostly gave up on "smart" devices
Cries in Australian rental
Getting a solid Zigbee or Z-Wave mesh is not trivial
What is your gateway
External antenna?
Yup, and CC2530 router
@clear ferry how is your new zigbee gateway
I am going to fix all 837 bugs by tomorrow. Clone the app. Call it Oscillon's Wild Ride Home System. Ill make trillions
I've found a lot more hassle with esphome and tuyaconvert
It's just such an arduous process
I honestly don't know where to even begin with this
I can tell thats its been a passion project for yall for years
its pretty awesome
Are you working on anything else?
Staying insane
@hushed basalt just did a power off my DC for disaster testing before I leave for the us
And everything came back up automatically
Including the cc1352 with zigbee2mqtt docker
Still only beta testing it since I don't want to move everything before I leave
*automagically
Are you in the USA rn
What city
Arkham
Say hi to Batman for me π
Going away to Europe for 5 weeks was a test of my high availability
ISP changed my internet on week 4 though. Fuckers
Wut
Had to reprogram my modem when I got back
Need a bastion station with a 3g usb modem
Or pfsense?
Although good luck getting a ssh into a quadruple NAT'D mobile internet connection
Lmao
Ipv6 to the rescue?
VPN out to a cloud system
Yeah I thought of that
But it's academic because I don't want to pay for a data sim or a cloud instance just to sit there ;)
I could have it VPN my mum's router
But eh
Shut up Ted
Lulz mobile broadband
Well damnitt, I found something I need root for, using tasker to disable and enable cell data on my phone, jerks.
Whaaa? Android has that built in?
Unless you're saying you WANT to use Tasker?
I think I just read that funny
Disable mobile data? People do that? π
no I'd rather have android just kick my cell data off when it connects to wifi
yeah, I pay for bucks
buckets*
Pay for stuff?
so I don't want to use extra data haha
eh, i'd rather pay than have my company pay and call me all the time and stuff, unless someone else just pays for yours
wait, how old are you lol
My company pays, and I block everyone except wife and family while I'm off work π
I'm 35 π΄
The lucky ones π
We are?
i am lost .... is this a snowflake thing
are you 50+
only in mind
you are damn lucky to have a company pay for your phone but let you not answer their calls after work hours.
you must be really good at what you do.
I feel more gen x π€
after hours calls is pretty frowned upon in european work culture anyway
unless you are in an on duty roster
but then we get paid to answer
So it's like an american thing to be answering work emails/calls off hours?
I do if I feel like it, or if it is a good collegue
must be nice, but i'm not willing to take all of the downsides of living in any country that isn't america lol
if it is sales I usually go /ignore
@clear ferry you're 35?
yes he is a mil/snowflake
speaking of phones. I saw a Galaxy Fold at my local best buy the other day
such a big screen
but so fragile
I'm an old fart yes @scenic radish
Guess I even more of a βοΈ since I'm 27
yep ^^^^
oof
damn double points ^^^^^
I bought my first house when I was 24 π€£
Look upon my works ye mighty and despair
18
@dull chasm π π₯ πͺ π·
18 years old and buying a house
beat you by 6
could be a cardboard box
if I ever get arouund to that I'm probably 60+
and in a foriegn country at that
or a roach motel
I own a condo at least
lmao
i'd never own a condo, whats the point
I want a yard at least, and preferably a few acres
Couldn't afford a house
It's nice to not have to maintain the outside?
Paying other people to do stuff is π
I have a pretty big balcony though. And I'm at least putting money toward equity
speaking of equity, I have like $17000 in stock somewhere
I need to figure out how to cash it out
stock and equity is so upper class or murica
I just get random amounts of stock every year π€£
ok.. built my little box to control the alarm clock, now to write an automation
I mean you could drop over dead tomorrow and then it doesn't matter, so there's that lol.

Uh
I have some money saved up
Yay me?
that's why when I die all my money is gonna be buried with me
so that no one else can have it
-MAXIMUM MISER-
I'll probably die tomorrow now that you said it @rain swift
remember that when you feel guilt
holy snowing like crazy
I'm sure the rich elite have already done that, or something close to it.
Snowed like crazy?
hello, anyone has about 20 seconds of his/her precious time to help me out? I need to name a domain and I have a few ideas, yet cannot choose, so I made a list. It is doable in 10 seconds technically. I would apprecaite any help
snowed, plowed, potato potato
I just realized they have home automation in harry potter
i invested my mortgage to gaycoin
What is going on lol
only worry is that I didnt invest more

plz be joking
Crypto is like playing the lottery
You throw money at it
and hope you win big
?
gaycoin has stable future
sits on stable β¬0.02 EUR at the moment, iΓ€m happy with me decision
@past idol post-a-note them to a wall and blindfold throw a dart to choose
looks like a winter f-fest outside. neighbors all freaking out lol
Everyone is strange today. And this is coming from me
the bugs! they are everywhere! in the snow! with my list of coins!
@clear ferry was born that way, we can't change him
@forest edge haha, that sounds a fair solution
oi lads, this is sonoff ifan03. i'm trying to identify if there are free gpio pins to stuck my own sensor there. what is the meaning of "TP"
orig. is sharp high res
I'd ask in #diy-archived

π
I should order a vi mug
:wq
:q!
nano master race
nano, for when you don't need anything more powerful than notepad π
Heh shit
@steel urchin I've blocked my roborock in the firewall now, let's see what happens
Instead of cleaning, it wil not make it messier
it'll go find the nearest dog turd and smear it across your whole house
Shouldn't be hard, there are twice the number of dogs as children in the neighborhood
i mean i've pulled the modem's power and it stopped responding for me π€·ββοΈ that was all my experience what that so far...
I blocked it, and it still responds to HA
everyone knows emacs is superior in every way to vi
Yes, pfsense is the holy handgrenade of Antioch
I thought emacs was an operating system
I remember from my time using it
hitting ctrl-x all the time in the tutorial made me never want to use it again
You need to put it on its own vlan if you want to isolate it locally
@brisk glen can't see the map anymore in the mi home app, and all my Xiaomi devices are offline there too, I blocked the gateway at the same time
All you did was block it at the router/firewall level
It can still do shit at layer 2
I need to put it in its own L2 because blocking it talking over L3 isn't enough? That... Sounds very interesting...
How is it taking over L2 when there is a L3 device in between? That sounds... Improbable
Are you saying it is piggybacking on other devices?
So itβs directly connected to the pΓ³sense thing?
(Yay iOS autocorrect)
Or is it on a wireless AP thatβs on a switch
Ap - switch L2 - switch L2 - router - wan
pfsense is your router?
Yes
yah, its communicating over layer 2
the router is your gateway
never needs to touch the gateway when its on the same subnet
make a block all lans group
I have worked with networking for 20 years, and what you are saying just doesn't make sense, if you are saying it is still calling home π
um..
Yes, I already do that by default in pfsense
if it does not need to reach the gateway, then how can pfsense block across your lan it if its not handling the traffic
192.168.1.44/24 can talk to 192.168.1.54/24 without a router
arp request who has this ip... arp reply ME! ME! here is my mac
layer 2
none if that involves the router, its broadcasts
thus why you need to shove the device on its own subnet, now it has to go through the router to be routed to the other lans
Ngl the first time I used tshark I legit laughed out loud when I saw
Who has 10.0.0.1? Tell 10.0.0.x
lol
But are you saying it still phones home, or that it still probes my network π
I seriously thought it was hilarious
