gloomy canyon
#

maybe I should switch from isc-dhcpd to kea

rain swift
#

for?

gloomy canyon
#

dunno tbh

rain swift
#

lol

#

just gonna switch for no reason

#

shuffles cards

gloomy canyon
#

sometimes I think isc causes those kind of problems

#

2 devices with fixed adresses

rain swift
#

why would you need dhcpd for static IPs?

#

those 2 things don't go together.

gloomy canyon
#

dhcpd for phones etc

#

the sonoffs and esps got fixed ips

rain swift
#

so this is the dhcp server?

#

I use pihole, works amazing

#

never any issues, it just runs.

#

its running in a VM next to my home assistant VM

gloomy canyon
#

hm hard to backup the config

#

got the isc config before pihole

rain swift
#

I mean, they all use text files, is it hard to copy and paste stuff around?

#

might be I don't know.

#

my setup is pretty simple.

#

where is a good place to get inspiration for lovelace stuff?

river rune
#

I use isc no problem... You just have to make sure that your static IPs are outside the DHCP range

gloomy canyon
#

in the end I could delete all static ips... back in the days i used static ips for device_tracker

rain swift
#

that's a good practice but shouldn't really matter.

#

my network is a 10.x.x.x /21 I think, so I have tons of subnets and IPs lol

#

covered fo-eva

river rune
#

I used to run a 10.0.0.0/16 but decided I don't need that much so I switched to 10.0.0.0/24

gloomy canyon
#
range 192.168.0.200 192.168.0.254;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option domain-name-servers 1.1.1.1;```
river rune
#

I use .200-.253 for DHCP, .254 is my router

gloomy canyon
#

the cool guys use 10.? ๐Ÿ˜„

rain swift
#

yes haha

#

it's a private network, why limit yourself, use the whole IPv4 range

#

you'll never have to re arrange your stuff to make room or something

#

2k IPs per subnet? DONE

#

never know, in 10 years you may need that many IPs when even your coffee table has an address.

gloomy canyon
#

and all for tasmota updates.. dunno what really changes between the release BUT I HAVE TO UPGRADE

#

๐Ÿ˜„

rain swift
#

ahahahaha I don't upgrade unless its fixing an issue I have, or adding a feature I want.

gloomy canyon
#

is boredom an execuse?

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

rain swift
#

yes

#

I'm looking at people's HA configs for ideas.

gloomy canyon
#

want to take a look at my setup? I always want to improve...

rain swift
#

yes

valid halo
#

Gentlemen! My Friends!

#

I have done a productive thing today

#

I did watch surgey on my Pebble Steel watch

rain swift
#

?

valid halo
#

The Pebble Series of watches first gens. Have problem with screen tearing. I installed a new zebra strip to fix that.

gloomy canyon
rain swift
#

that's pretty slick.

gloomy canyon
#

ty

#

only some new cards... right now I try to monitor/graph the power usage/temperature of my workstation

#

like here

valid halo
#

Oh man

#

You look like a proper Hackerman now

#

๐Ÿ‘

gloomy canyon
#

cutting irony ๐Ÿ˜›

valid halo
#

Oh dear

#

I did not mean to cut you

#

That's an oops

gloomy canyon
#

well... show me your setup, I'm curious!

valid halo
#

Okay

#

You gonna laff

gloomy canyon
#

d4l? ๐Ÿ˜„

valid halo
#

BEHOLD

#

throws confetti

gloomy canyon
#

you should add some love ๐Ÿ˜‰

rain swift
#

not a bad start

valid halo
#

I haven't touched it in a while.

#

In my old set up. I had a Ring Tab and some Grafana dabbling and a tab for the stats of my pi

#

but I wiped all that out and started over out of a desire to start fresh and get back into things again.

#

Sadly that hasn't really gone to plan

#

I got my Google Home in there and my wifi outlet/bulb and then didn't do much wiht it

gloomy canyon
#

system stats are always important

valid halo
#

Dats a lot of YAML and Jinja

rain swift
#

yeah that's crazy

#

I do some basic monitoring and alerting

valid halo
#

Honestly I've been struggling with motivation in general a lot

gloomy canyon
#

mhm I like graphs

#

but yeah... maybe a bit over the top

valid halo
#

I remember when I was super into HA

rain swift
#

doesn't look like english is your first language

proper swift
#

there are never too many graphs. I run Zabbix at home. ๐Ÿ™‚

valid halo
#

I wanted to make a Graphana graph for when my smart outlet was on or off

#

Because why not

rain swift
#

my setup is pretty utilitarian, function over form lol

gloomy canyon
#

Including grafana images is a pain in the....

valid halo
#

I remember i had a whole tab for my Ring Camera

#

Doorbell Camera

#

I feel like that thing was a worthless purchase sometimes

#

the damn thing goes off whenever a car drives by

quartz ether
#

Change the zones it detects motion in. But yes they are pretty bad I regret my one big time

valid halo
#

I did

#

it's set to be the lowest range

#

still

#

when ever the garbage truck comes...

rain swift
#

@valid halo that's why I was happy when I got motion sensors in the house, no more crappy camera based motion detection.

#

I used to spam myself with motion alerts from blue iris because the wind would blow and things

valid halo
#

Ah Blue iris

#

I dabbled with that when I was fiddling with my Wyze camera

rain swift
#

I can't stand pixel based detection, PIR it the way

valid halo
#

I think buying it was a mistake too

rain swift
#

blue iris is awesome, been using it for years

#

its the best system out there that isn't a proprietary pro system that costs thousands.

#

and those license you by the camera.

#

I've got it to where HA triggers cameras based on motion sensors, and when I change alarm state in HA it changes profiles in BI

#

false positives are a thing of the past lol

valid halo
#

I remember I was tinkering with an ESP chip and an IR sensor

#

to try and make a cheap jury rigged PIR sensor for people walking on the path to my house

#

which then would send a command to my hacked Wyze camera to snap a picture or three

rain swift
#

yeah, I use zwave sensors, but anything that can talk to HA

valid halo
#

I think if I get another cam I'm gonna do more research. Wyze is indeed cheap and easy to get but the RTSP on the Software for both 1st party and hacked firmware felt kind of unreliable

#

It'd just randomly stop or freeze up on a frame when I was having it run on VLC on my 2nd montior

forest edge
#

that sonoff cam that Drzz showed looked promising but there was questions I would want answered before going that route

valid halo
#

sonoff makes a CAMERA?

#

Are you pulling my leg?

forest edge
#

truth be told as long as the wyze isn't pointed inside your home or at anything you really care about the beta firmware with rtsp is good enough + sd card

#

it's max fps was always intended to be at 15

rain swift
#

I'm sure everyone makes a camera, the question is, is it trash?

valid halo
#

I mean isn't the intention to point your Wyze at things you care about?

rain swift
#

dahua is the best surveillance cameras out there right now.

#

and if you block them from talking to china, you don't have to worry about security or spying issues.

#

hikvision is a close second i'd say

forest edge
#

difference between pointing a camera at your car vs wife in the shower @valid halo

rain swift
#

lmao

#

I'm not allowed to put cams in the bedrooms or bathrooms.

#

everywhere else is fair game.

#

I don't care if someone wants to watch me take a shower, but I was over ruled.

#

that's assuming you actually get access to anything.

valid halo
#

Ooft

#

I remember a Magic MIrror person used a camera in the mirror to tell who was in the bathroom

#

for some kind of automation

rain swift
#

haha funny

#

what good is a magic mirror, when I get out of the shower the mirror is all fogged up

#

I guess you could stare at it while you brush your teeth

#

I think some people do things just to do them.

valid halo
#

I think that's what made me do so much with HA at first

#

it was so new and neato

#

and I was just like "WOWEE!"

wet pilot
#

if you're fogging up your mirror you should replace/upgrade your exhaust fan

valid halo
#

and I'd just try things to try things

wet pilot
#

or just use your exhaust fan ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

or take cold showers

rain swift
#

I generally don't do anything in HA until I'm sitting there thinking, hey, this is something I could automated since I do it over and over, or blah blah

#

cold showers are for psychopaths. ๐Ÿ™‚

wet pilot
#

haha

valid halo
#

One automation I feel proud of is when I get in my car. My phone will say "Hey <NAME> do you have your kit"

#

since I have a peanut allergy and can't forget it

#

or I might die

rain swift
#

I think that is something I would keep in a bag I take everywhere I go

valid halo
#

As you can probably guess

#

I would forget to take the bag sometimes

forest edge
#

wow ATSC 3.0 is already starting to go live. 4k OTA is insane lol

forest edge
#

lol 4k and Dolby Atmos over the air.. expect OTA boxes/tv's prices to jump and cable subscriptions to drop lol

wet pilot
#

nah, i expect US carriers to bury this somehow

forest edge
#

it's already starting to go live

wet pilot
#

and the FCC will back them up because they're all paid for

forest edge
#

there is like 2 towers built and broadcasting it

#

just not many devvices with atsc 3.0 support lol

#

oh and they expecting mobile tv to make a come back

#

so better break out your old ass casio tv watches lol

wet pilot
#

lol

#

would need to attach a tuner box to them

forest edge
#

lol

#

backpack with a wire to watch

#

I will advise to buy the earliest models of OTA boxes that support atsc 3.0 even if you don't need them cause like everything else.. as time rolls through the older gens will be less expensive and made better than the overpriced garabage that is sure to follow lol

hushed basalt
#

OTA should die

#

Waste of spectrum

forest edge
#

noway

ocean mirage
#

I like my ABC tyvm

hushed basalt
#

Just put everything on IP. Or at least multiplex with fibre to the premises

#

Oh wait we screwed that up too

forest edge
#

need all we can get to drive down cable and other tv paid services

hushed basalt
#

There can still be tv

#

Just not OTA

ocean mirage
#

Most city places even with FTTN should be fine for TV streaming

forest edge
#

OTA is the only real means

ocean mirage
#

rural areas I have no idea

forest edge
#

everything else relys on paying someone else lol

ocean mirage
#

lots of people dont have internet connections though

hushed basalt
#

Broadcast stations aren't free

#

Neither is spectrum licensing

forest edge
#

you get commercials on cable too, you won't notcice a diffrence

hushed basalt
#

I never ever ever watch OTA anyways

#

It's all hot garbage here

forest edge
steel urchin
#

ok got 11 switches installed today... i can say i did something

forest edge
#

11? wtf

steel urchin
#

yep, kinda tired from it lol

#

had to replace 2 gang boxes

#

although it went MUCH smoother today than yesterday's

forest edge
#

first power surge and your whole house will flicker like it's alive!

#

in a loop

steel urchin
#

why do you say that

#

pretty cool to hit one button and the entire house lights up

forest edge
#

just teasing since 11 is alot of lights lol

clear ferry
#

11, rookie number

#

Gotta to those numbers @forest edge

forest edge
#

@clear ferry watch the video i posted above.. get it stuck in your head!

clear ferry
ocean mirage
#

so atx, you know how you said azure goes down like once a month yesterday

#

well today it happened

#

lmao

thick dragon
#

Ya'll are welcome

forest edge
#

I'll stretch! I'll stretch my neck out for ya..

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage enjoy three weeks of uptime now then!

ocean mirage
#

haha

#

I dont mind, just means when I finish my current task and its down I get to do nothing

#

or more nothing than I usually do

steel urchin
#

well i feel accomplished either way ๐Ÿ˜› leviton face plates look nice

#

now i need to turn a few of the blue lights off

forest edge
#

now all you got left is smart faucets, smart appliances and and heating and cooling

clear ferry
steel urchin
#

i have a zwave thermostat, but i want to make it smarter with some sensors around the house to circulate and help normalize other areas

#

one half of the house is much cooler than the other half, even though it's dumping more hot air on that side... there's got to be a leak that the builder just isn't capable of finding :S

clear ferry
#

I'm helping a friend with that, he has a 50 year old house with floor grates and air heating, the problem is the thermostat is in the living room, so when the temperature reaches the set value the rest of the house is still colder

#

So we are going to do solenoid controlled vent tubes and multiple thermostats, and turn on and off vents as needed

steel urchin
#

oh damn, fancy

clear ferry
#

Easy logic, just gotta play with it in lab to be sure about the results before installing

#

16 air ducts, plus 8 rooms plus on and off total

forest edge
#

gotta be careful cause at some point stand alone heat pumps are more cost effective than tearing through a house installing ducts ect lol

clear ferry
#

Well yes, most of Norwegian houses have heatpumps, this house is actually the only Norwegian house I have ever seen with floor ducts

#

Like, American style

steel urchin
#

Only place I've seen floor ducts is a trailer home

#

But I could see northern states have that for optimal heat spread

wet pilot
#

i've seen some home builders get cute and run the ducts between the first and 2nd floor

#

so the first floor has it on the ceiling and the 2nd floor has them on the floor

Got to love clients

#

I did a job for this client a year ago, say for $X/hr

#

And yesterday they asked me

Your rate is (75% of X) right?

#

Then I'm like no sorry that wasn't my rate, and it's also gone up, it's (125% of X)

steel urchin
#

"for you it's twice as much" is a fun thing to tell people... We sold a ton of stuff on FB/cl during the move, and people low ball you like crazy, so I raise it. They start acting confused, and I raise it more. Then they ask, why are you doing that? To which my reply is "see how stupid it is to ask for something nowhere near it's value? Tell you what, I'll cut you a deal, for you it's 300% and we won't talk about it anymore".

hushed basalt
#

To be fair my rate did go up :D

steel urchin
#

It's important to know your value. Your rate didn't go up, it met your value.

hushed basalt
#

Don't have that full time job to live off anymore. Have to treat any freelance work as a real job not a side hustle

steel urchin
#

And chances are it's too low

hushed basalt
#

Even though my main focus is study/upskilling

#

Any stuff that takes me away from that has to pay well enough to make it worthwhile

#

I think my family/inlaws think I have lots of free time just because I'm not punching in the 9-5

#

I'm pretty much studying 10 hours a day

#

Plus the obligatory 4 hours a day trying to pen test atxbyeas homelab so I can mess with his HA

steel urchin
#

Whatcha studying?

clear ferry
#

@strange vapor I'm in love with some of the church organ sounds of the Triton

#

I might just become a born again Church Organ player

#

@hushed basalt COME AT ME BRO

#

๐Ÿ‘Š

strange vapor
#

@clear ferry Get to a Cathedral with a a proper pipe organ, pull out all the stops, just play a single chord across bass pedals and two manuals, and watch your mind get blown. The Triton will be such a disappointment after that you'll get over that temptation.

clear ferry
#

haha, indeed

#

even so, the sounds are quite nice in a home studio, albeit, probably nothing like the Kronos

clever mortar
#

There's nothing like a well maintained organ playing the right music

#

Sigh... bought an Orange Pi Zero (to replace my Pi Zero that's been acting "funky"). Got it all set up, plugged in the spare, good, BT dongle, and it turns out some time in the last "while" something happened to the BT dongle and it's no longer good ๐Ÿ˜  Verified in other systems, and they all agree that the mystery USB device is broken and don't want anything to do with it...

#

Thankfully Amazon same day delivery means I get a replacement later today...

oh i thought you meant a degree

hushed basalt

Plus my continual devops stuff in my homelab

#

Nah no one cares about degrees in Perth ;)

steel urchin
#

how else are you going to fan those fires out if you don't have degrees to wave at them?

#

honestly i somewhat regret college

#

4 degrees and really barely used any of them

hushed basalt
#

We call them universities here

steel urchin
#

but i met my wife, so that's a silver lining

hushed basalt
#

What you would call a college

steel urchin
#

yeah university.. same thing

hushed basalt
#

Colleges are like trade schools

steel urchin
#

idiomatic nomenclature

clear ferry
#

lol degrees ๐Ÿคข

hushed basalt
#

Only Universities can grant degrees here

steel urchin
#

again.. idiomatic nomenclature

#

but when you said studying, i figured it was for courses

#

not self taught

clear ferry
#

wow, I have never actually been in a voice channel before

#

maybe I haven't had discord open while I've had my bose's on before ๐Ÿค”

steel urchin
#

i agree that a degree has no true value, but there is a difference in academic pursuit and "learning javascript"

clear ferry
#

it just popped up and wanted me to change my audio devices

steel urchin
#

esp in something like computer science (not so much in business for example)

#

"i can make a react app" does not make an engineer

#

but i digress, i was just curious

clear ferry

I gave up school almost 20 years ago, and I have gotten the jobs I've wanted, while my friends who pursued education are either working in gas stations or as warehouse sales people ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

and a few of them are dead ๐Ÿค”

steel urchin
#

i'm not enforcing any stereotype that you need college/university to excel

#

if anything, the opposite... like i said, i have regrets

#

but, again... i see too many people go off to learn a language, and have literally no concept of best practices based on theory, just "that's how a tutorial told me to do it"

clear ferry
#

I tried doing an engineering degree, but I ended up just finding the internal student FTP and downloading star trek and warez ๐Ÿคฃ

steel urchin
#

design patterns, antipatterns, architecture, etc... you rarely see someone just "learn" those

#

and certainly not in any timeframe worth a damn

clear ferry
#

sure, I would prefer my doctor to have a degree in whatever surgery he is performing on me, but for IT people, the most useful people I have met or worked with have been self taught ๐Ÿคฃ

strange vapor
#

I have a degree in "Computer Systems" which was mainly a programming/dev course, but while doing it I fell in which the dodgy lot running skynet.ie and ended up on the SysAdmin side doing dodgy Perl.

hushed basalt

Don't have time for University, i have too much learning to do ;)

strange vapor

Still doing sysadmin, but have gotten over the whole Perl thing ๐Ÿ˜„

steel urchin

there's definitely something to be said about someone that can learn and problem solve

hushed basalt

Could you imagine a university trying to teach k8s

steel urchin

yes

clear ferry

I K8 you so much right now

steel urchin

but it'd be out of date lol

strange vapor

@hushed basalt My old department already has a fully up and running K8S setup and students are given access as necessary for projects.

hushed basalt
#

Lucky

#

Here universities are just turning into Visa factories :(

clear ferry
#

I've tried teaching people stuff, but I'm as educational as a dead pig, so I just say Tell me what you are trying to do, and we can do it together instead

strange vapor
#

Saying that, a company involved in K8S sponsered a new building and asked that they cover it so they're getting student out who know what it is.

steel urchin
#

but also, learning kubernetes is going back to "i know kubernetes" and then not knowing why you do something... poison patterns, consensus, etc... you typically won't learn that from "learning kubernetes"

strange vapor
#

Similar happened over in the engineering side. Analog Electrontronic sponsered a new building so that they could have input into the courses and get out people who knew lower level IC stuff

steel urchin
#

you might learn it on the job when someone teaches you, but then you learn THEIR way of doing it... not necessarily the right way

#

there's a million ways to skin a cat, but only a few that are accurate and precise enough to bother with

hushed basalt
#

puts away lawn mower

steel urchin
#

lol

#

just, when you get good enough with JS, start learning patterns.... they'll take you further, help you adapt to new languages faster, and allow you to communicate effectively without having to describe what those 2k lines of code do

#

and then study antipatterns so you don't make rookie mistakes (and when they're the only path).. and for the love of god, stay away from meta programming

#

what is the saying? so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should

anyway, off my rickety soap box and into my comfy bed... sprinkler guy is here in 3 hours :S

One of the first projects we had to do in one of the 101 courses was:

After 2 years your phone battery on average only holds 80% of it's charge

Charging your battery above 80% is bad. Having it get below 20% is bad. Batteries are finicky little monsters

i wouldn't say it's bad but charging to only 80% certainly helps with longevity

steel urchin

running 2 win10 vm's running ark servers, 2x Minecraft Java servers, 1x 7 days 2 die server, HA, and about 40 other containers

#

still have tons or RAM and cpu overhead left over

steel urchin
#

if the ark servers weren't win10 app, i'd be livin only in docker land and using way less mem

#

what dashboard is that

boreal pewter
#

Netdata

steel urchin
#

purty

#

jesus their website is sexy

boreal pewter
#

I stopped Hosting game servers, eventhough Minecraft was what me made become a SysAdmin 10 years ago

steel urchin

hehe i'm literally just getting into MC

steel urchin
#

does netdata have their own agent?

scenic radish
#

minecraft is awesome you twat

steel urchin
#

i'm using telegraf with influx/grafana

boreal pewter
#

Netdata is a all in one but you can turn it into an agent only

wet pilot
#

i had a factorio server running for a bit. not now though

steel urchin
#

i like how they split up all the components

#

have you tried satisfactory phnx?

boreal pewter
#

To mention Netdata is the best Real time Monitor, wouldn't use backends for that and save long term, that can quickly turn into a mess

wet pilot
#

i've seen it but i haven't picked it up

steel urchin
#

it's so pretty

#

that's why i like the influx route... don't have to worry about storage, retention policies manage that for me

#

i put everything to 7 days max, which is probably 3-4 days more than i need really

#

although i need to find how i can make a sensor of the data... if my cpu dips too low i know i have something crashed/failed (like last night when a win10 vm didn't start back up)... super simple litmus test, but it'd work for me

boreal pewter
#

Netdata writes All it's data every second. Storage doesn't matter, rather all the other Hardware that is supposed to Display 7 days of every second with a few thousand checks ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

It's not too Bad to run it with 24h just in ram

steel urchin
#

right but on reboot or power failure you lose the data

#

realtime is almost useless once you get things stable

#

it's when things go wonky you need that data

#

and yes, i said wonky

#

this alexa integration process is pissing me right the fuck off

boreal pewter
#

Correct you Lose the data, but having that Problem and fear there are other problems more important than a Monitoring System ๐Ÿ˜‚

Any powershell pro here?

Nice to see that all the data stays local on the LAN. Could be great for room presence, too,

I forgot linksys exist

scenic radish

steel urchin

@fallow galleon always best to just ask, and if someone can answer they might... asking for a pro can cause people to feel intimidated to step up... i'm no pro, but i've messed with it enough to answer SOMETHING at some point ๐Ÿ˜›

@scenic radish With the new Wellness pods that will change, though.

#

boreal pewter

Why would You run Wellness in kubernetes?

steel urchin

they have a toilet you piss in and it reads your biometrics... i kinda want that

pallid nest

From the above article.

scenic radish

ah right lol

"That provides a much greater degree of detail and accuracy which allows Linksys Aware to then detect incredibly subtle movements like the subtle shifts of someone while they sleep, and even a personโ€™s breathing rate."

boreal pewter

Why would You run Wellness in kubernetes?

pallid nest

Gah, I'm mixing up my Slack and Discord commands.

I'm not talking about Kubernetes, I'm talking about the Linksys Aware article I posted above.

and that 4th zone had sprinklers that did all of the irrigation around the parking area for potential buyers

after they sold the lot where the parking area was they chopped out all of the sprinkler heads except for one

this is what i have:
