for?
dunno tbh
so this is the dhcp server?
I use pihole, works amazing
never any issues, it just runs.
its running in a VM next to my home assistant VM
I mean, they all use text files, is it hard to copy and paste stuff around?
might be I don't know.
my setup is pretty simple.
where is a good place to get inspiration for lovelace stuff?
I use isc no problem... You just have to make sure that your static IPs are outside the DHCP range
in the end I could delete all static ips... back in the days i used static ips for device_tracker
that's a good practice but shouldn't really matter.
my network is a 10.x.x.x /21 I think, so I have tons of subnets and IPs lol
covered fo-eva
I used to run a 10.0.0.0/16 but decided I don't need that much so I switched to 10.0.0.0/24
range 192.168.0.200 192.168.0.254;
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
option domain-name-servers 1.1.1.1;```
I use .200-.253 for DHCP, .254 is my router
the cool guys use 10.? ๐
yes haha
it's a private network, why limit yourself, use the whole IPv4 range
you'll never have to re arrange your stuff to make room or something
2k IPs per subnet? DONE
never know, in 10 years you may need that many IPs when even your coffee table has an address.
and all for tasmota updates.. dunno what really changes between the release BUT I HAVE TO UPGRADE
๐
ahahahaha I don't upgrade unless its fixing an issue I have, or adding a feature I want.
want to take a look at my setup? I always want to improve...
yes
Gentlemen! My Friends!
I have done a productive thing today
I did watch surgey on my Pebble Steel watch
?
The Pebble Series of watches first gens. Have problem with screen tearing. I installed a new zebra strip to fix that.
@rain swift old post but start here: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/from-avoidance-to-amazement-my-lovelace-setup/107027
Hey there! I avoided Lovelace as long as it was possible and thought that my UI based on groups and views (defined in packages) is far better than a complex setup of looping lovelace yaml. I was so terribly wrong. Let me present you some extracts from my current UI. I hope...
that's pretty slick.
ty
only some new cards... right now I try to monitor/graph the power usage/temperature of my workstation
like here
cutting irony ๐
well... show me your setup, I'm curious!
d4l? ๐
you should add some love ๐
not a bad start
I haven't touched it in a while.
In my old set up. I had a Ring Tab and some Grafana dabbling and a tab for the stats of my pi
but I wiped all that out and started over out of a desire to start fresh and get back into things again.
Sadly that hasn't really gone to plan
I got my Google Home in there and my wifi outlet/bulb and then didn't do much wiht it
system stats are always important
Dats a lot of YAML and Jinja
Honestly I've been struggling with motivation in general a lot
I remember when I was super into HA
doesn't look like english is your first language
there are never too many graphs. I run Zabbix at home. ๐
I wanted to make a Graphana graph for when my smart outlet was on or off
Because why not
my setup is pretty utilitarian, function over form lol
Including grafana images is a pain in the....
I remember i had a whole tab for my Ring Camera
Doorbell Camera
I feel like that thing was a worthless purchase sometimes
the damn thing goes off whenever a car drives by
Change the zones it detects motion in. But yes they are pretty bad I regret my one big time
@valid halo that's why I was happy when I got motion sensors in the house, no more crappy camera based motion detection.
I used to spam myself with motion alerts from blue iris because the wind would blow and things
I can't stand pixel based detection, PIR it the way
I think buying it was a mistake too
blue iris is awesome, been using it for years
its the best system out there that isn't a proprietary pro system that costs thousands.
and those license you by the camera.
I've got it to where HA triggers cameras based on motion sensors, and when I change alarm state in HA it changes profiles in BI
false positives are a thing of the past lol
I remember I was tinkering with an ESP chip and an IR sensor
to try and make a cheap jury rigged PIR sensor for people walking on the path to my house
which then would send a command to my hacked Wyze camera to snap a picture or three
yeah, I use zwave sensors, but anything that can talk to HA
I think if I get another cam I'm gonna do more research. Wyze is indeed cheap and easy to get but the RTSP on the Software for both 1st party and hacked firmware felt kind of unreliable
It'd just randomly stop or freeze up on a frame when I was having it run on VLC on my 2nd montior
that sonoff cam that Drzz showed looked promising but there was questions I would want answered before going that route
truth be told as long as the wyze isn't pointed inside your home or at anything you really care about the beta firmware with rtsp is good enough + sd card
it's max fps was always intended to be at 15
I'm sure everyone makes a camera, the question is, is it trash?
I mean isn't the intention to point your Wyze at things you care about?
dahua is the best surveillance cameras out there right now.
and if you block them from talking to china, you don't have to worry about security or spying issues.
hikvision is a close second i'd say
difference between pointing a camera at your car vs wife in the shower @valid halo
lmao
I'm not allowed to put cams in the bedrooms or bathrooms.
everywhere else is fair game.
I don't care if someone wants to watch me take a shower, but I was over ruled.
that's assuming you actually get access to anything.
Ooft
I remember a Magic MIrror person used a camera in the mirror to tell who was in the bathroom
for some kind of automation
haha funny
what good is a magic mirror, when I get out of the shower the mirror is all fogged up
I guess you could stare at it while you brush your teeth
I think some people do things just to do them.
I think that's what made me do so much with HA at first
it was so new and neato
and I was just like "WOWEE!"
if you're fogging up your mirror you should replace/upgrade your exhaust fan
and I'd just try things to try things
or just use your exhaust fan ๐
or take cold showers
I generally don't do anything in HA until I'm sitting there thinking, hey, this is something I could automated since I do it over and over, or blah blah
cold showers are for psychopaths. ๐
haha
One automation I feel proud of is when I get in my car. My phone will say "Hey <NAME> do you have your kit"
since I have a peanut allergy and can't forget it
or I might die
I think that is something I would keep in a bag I take everywhere I go
wow ATSC 3.0 is already starting to go live. 4k OTA is insane lol
lol 4k and Dolby Atmos over the air.. expect OTA boxes/tv's prices to jump and cable subscriptions to drop lol
nah, i expect US carriers to bury this somehow
it's already starting to go live
and the FCC will back them up because they're all paid for
there is like 2 towers built and broadcasting it
just not many devvices with atsc 3.0 support lol
oh and they expecting mobile tv to make a come back
so better break out your old ass casio tv watches lol
lol
backpack with a wire to watch
I will advise to buy the earliest models of OTA boxes that support atsc 3.0 even if you don't need them cause like everything else.. as time rolls through the older gens will be less expensive and made better than the overpriced garabage that is sure to follow lol
noway
I like my ABC tyvm
Just put everything on IP. Or at least multiplex with fibre to the premises
Oh wait we screwed that up too
need all we can get to drive down cable and other tv paid services
Most city places even with FTTN should be fine for TV streaming
OTA is the only real means
rural areas I have no idea
everything else relys on paying someone else lol
lots of people dont have internet connections though
you get commercials on cable too, you won't notcice a diffrence
@scenic radish here's a song to get stuck in your head haha https://youtu.be/wmbEtgw9Pf4

11? wtf
yep, kinda tired from it lol
had to replace 2 gang boxes
although it went MUCH smoother today than yesterday's
just teasing since 11 is alot of lights lol
@clear ferry watch the video i posted above.. get it stuck in your head!

so atx, you know how you said azure goes down like once a month yesterday
well today it happened
lmao
This is my metal cover of Toss A Coin To Your Witcher, song from the second episode of The Witcher on Netflix. All arrangements and instruments by yours truly.

Ya'll are welcome
I'll stretch! I'll stretch my neck out for ya..
@ocean mirage enjoy three weeks of uptime now then!
haha
I dont mind, just means when I finish my current task and its down I get to do nothing
or more nothing than I usually do
well i feel accomplished either way ๐ leviton face plates look nice
now i need to turn a few of the blue lights off
now all you got left is smart faucets, smart appliances and and heating and cooling
i have a zwave thermostat, but i want to make it smarter with some sensors around the house to circulate and help normalize other areas
one half of the house is much cooler than the other half, even though it's dumping more hot air on that side... there's got to be a leak that the builder just isn't capable of finding :S
I'm helping a friend with that, he has a 50 year old house with floor grates and air heating, the problem is the thermostat is in the living room, so when the temperature reaches the set value the rest of the house is still colder
So we are going to do solenoid controlled vent tubes and multiple thermostats, and turn on and off vents as needed
oh damn, fancy
Easy logic, just gotta play with it in lab to be sure about the results before installing
16 air ducts, plus 8 rooms plus on and off total
gotta be careful cause at some point stand alone heat pumps are more cost effective than tearing through a house installing ducts ect lol
Well yes, most of Norwegian houses have heatpumps, this house is actually the only Norwegian house I have ever seen with floor ducts
Like, American style
Only place I've seen floor ducts is a trailer home
But I could see northern states have that for optimal heat spread
i've seen some home builders get cute and run the ducts between the first and 2nd floor
so the first floor has it on the ceiling and the 2nd floor has them on the floor
๐
Who expects their ISP to be a valid source of security?
As usual, behind the times! ๐ฆ
I'll go back under my rock, there's no @clear ferry there!
I am the rock, so that just means cuddles
๐ฑ

Sigh. 1.6 Kg of CO2 = 3.5 Kw/h with the US generation mix, so to consume that in a half hour implies that end-to-end streaming consumes 7000 watts, which is off by well over an order of magnitude. We can quibble about accounting with 2x, but 10x is just BS. https://t.co/k...

Got to love clients
I did a job for this client a year ago, say for $X/hr
And yesterday they asked me
Your rate is (75% of X) right?
Then I'm like no sorry that wasn't my rate, and it's also gone up, it's (125% of X)
"for you it's twice as much" is a fun thing to tell people... We sold a ton of stuff on FB/cl during the move, and people low ball you like crazy, so I raise it. They start acting confused, and I raise it more. Then they ask, why are you doing that? To which my reply is "see how stupid it is to ask for something nowhere near it's value? Tell you what, I'll cut you a deal, for you it's 300% and we won't talk about it anymore".
To be fair my rate did go up :D
It's important to know your value. Your rate didn't go up, it met your value.
Don't have that full time job to live off anymore. Have to treat any freelance work as a real job not a side hustle
And chances are it's too low
Even though my main focus is study/upskilling
Any stuff that takes me away from that has to pay well enough to make it worthwhile
I think my family/inlaws think I have lots of free time just because I'm not punching in the 9-5
I'm pretty much studying 10 hours a day
Plus the obligatory 4 hours a day trying to pen test atxbyeas homelab so I can mess with his HA
Whatcha studying?
@strange vapor I'm in love with some of the church organ sounds of the Triton
I might just become a born again Church Organ player
@hushed basalt COME AT ME BRO
๐
@clear ferry Get to a Cathedral with a a proper pipe organ, pull out all the stops, just play a single chord across bass pedals and two manuals, and watch your mind get blown. The Triton will be such a disappointment after that you'll get over that temptation.
haha, indeed
even so, the sounds are quite nice in a home studio, albeit, probably nothing like the Kronos
There's nothing like a well maintained organ playing the right music
Sigh... bought an Orange Pi Zero (to replace my Pi Zero that's been acting "funky"). Got it all set up, plugged in the spare, good, BT dongle, and it turns out some time in the last "while" something happened to the BT dongle and it's no longer good ๐ Verified in other systems, and they all agree that the mystery USB device is broken and don't want anything to do with it...
Thankfully Amazon same day delivery means I get a replacement later today...
That'd cost twice as much though ๐
I hadn't actually expected them to stock any such thing, but it turns out they do...
Bluetooth 2.1, for twice the price of a known good BT 4.0 from Amazon ๐คฃ
oh i thought you meant a degree
Plus my continual devops stuff in my homelab
Nah no one cares about degrees in Perth ;)
how else are you going to fan those fires out if you don't have degrees to wave at them?
honestly i somewhat regret college
4 degrees and really barely used any of them
We call them universities here
but i met my wife, so that's a silver lining
What you would call a college
yeah university.. same thing
Colleges are like trade schools
idiomatic nomenclature
lol degrees ๐คข
Only Universities can grant degrees here
again.. idiomatic nomenclature
but when you said studying, i figured it was for courses
not self taught
wow, I have never actually been in a voice channel before
maybe I haven't had discord open while I've had my bose's on before ๐ค
i agree that a degree has no true value, but there is a difference in academic pursuit and "learning javascript"
it just popped up and wanted me to change my audio devices
esp in something like computer science (not so much in business for example)
"i can make a react app" does not make an engineer
but i digress, i was just curious
I gave up school almost 20 years ago, and I have gotten the jobs I've wanted, while my friends who pursued education are either working in gas stations or as warehouse sales people ๐คทโโ๏ธ
and a few of them are dead ๐ค
i'm not enforcing any stereotype that you need college/university to excel
if anything, the opposite... like i said, i have regrets
but, again... i see too many people go off to learn a language, and have literally no concept of best practices based on theory, just "that's how a tutorial told me to do it"
I tried doing an engineering degree, but I ended up just finding the internal student FTP and downloading star trek and warez ๐คฃ
design patterns, antipatterns, architecture, etc... you rarely see someone just "learn" those
and certainly not in any timeframe worth a damn
sure, I would prefer my doctor to have a degree in whatever surgery he is performing on me, but for IT people, the most useful people I have met or worked with have been self taught ๐คฃ
I have a degree in "Computer Systems" which was mainly a programming/dev course, but while doing it I fell in which the dodgy lot running skynet.ie and ended up on the SysAdmin side doing dodgy Perl.
Don't have time for University, i have too much learning to do ;)
Still doing sysadmin, but have gotten over the whole Perl thing ๐
there's definitely something to be said about someone that can learn and problem solve
Could you imagine a university trying to teach k8s
yes
I K8 you so much right now
but it'd be out of date lol
@hushed basalt My old department already has a fully up and running K8S setup and students are given access as necessary for projects.
I've tried teaching people stuff, but I'm as educational as a dead pig, so I just say Tell me what you are trying to do, and we can do it together instead
Saying that, a company involved in K8S sponsered a new building and asked that they cover it so they're getting student out who know what it is.
but also, learning kubernetes is going back to "i know kubernetes" and then not knowing why you do something... poison patterns, consensus, etc... you typically won't learn that from "learning kubernetes"
Similar happened over in the engineering side. Analog Electrontronic sponsered a new building so that they could have input into the courses and get out people who knew lower level IC stuff
you might learn it on the job when someone teaches you, but then you learn THEIR way of doing it... not necessarily the right way
there's a million ways to skin a cat, but only a few that are accurate and precise enough to bother with
puts away lawn mower
lol
just, when you get good enough with JS, start learning patterns.... they'll take you further, help you adapt to new languages faster, and allow you to communicate effectively without having to describe what those 2k lines of code do
and then study antipatterns so you don't make rookie mistakes (and when they're the only path).. and for the love of god, stay away from meta programming
what is the saying? so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should
anyway, off my rickety soap box and into my comfy bed... sprinkler guy is here in 3 hours :S

One of the first projects we had to do in one of the 101 courses was:
- Deal five cards from a deck
- Figure out what what the poker hand was
It was basically a quick project to make sure you understand basics like division and modulos etc.
Eight people handed in the same answer with a crazy big if else statement for every possible hand... All eight with the same error for one of the flush hands...
Lol
I'm glad I know how to get into and out of vim
And basic navigation and insert mode
Any more than that I don't care,
I don't think I can agree with people who say spending 6 months learning to become a vim master is worth it
Plus it's designed for a keyboard style which doesn't exist :D
I have worked with linux for 20+ years and unix for 13 years
I still struggle with vi ๐คฃ
I just cheap out and do nano, but I'm forcing myself more and more to use vi
@clear ferry Be a man, just use ed ๐
Just run a random generator over every bit on the drive until you get the setup you want
@hushed basalt more like ESC ESC ESC fdsagsdaga :q :q :q ESC ESC DOH :wq! NOOOO
There's always an XKCD... https://xkcd.com/378/
Vsc is just too good to ignore
I used to do the nerdtree, ctags, all the jazz
Then I fell in love with intellij idea
And now vscode is bae
I set up a snippet for the first time yesterday
A docker compose label block which needed the same variable placed in 6 times
Plus 8-9 lines of boilerplate
Keyword, tab, argumentname, tab, done
Very handy things, esp with the tabbing to the next input arg
If you don't write logs to it you should be okay
it's just going to do zigbee2mqtt
Yeah just make sure the logs go into a temp fs
or remote fs perhaps
Or disable them completely
If you've got some centralised logging setup that could be good
Syslogd
But the stuff it pushes to your mqtt broker should be all you'd need
Oh telco, check out 12factor app
Yeah I've read that a couple of times
Cool, it's a good mantra
I was looking at some of the python code I wrote a while ago,
It's not actually too terrible
Considering this project was made while I was learning programming for the first time from scratch
Nice
Speaking about doing the wrong thing just because you can
Did I tell you about the guy trying to use airflow to orchestrate all their vms
Like ????
I think he went to a talk on airflow
And decided that everything looked like a nail for this new hammer
Lol
It was a startup too
Ugh... I hate not being able to sleep.
They literally were building the product then running around trying to find people who wanted it
Something something blockchain
Something about write once ledgers for audability or something
Tomorrow is going to suck. I hate it already.
Lol well... Too much happening or I would
And they're still building my neighboring houses, so daytime is horrible to sleep atm
Which is when I prefer

I like goat meat alright
heh
Whhyyyy

Money and opportunity is nice
Office cubicles, commuting and politics maybe not so nice
office ๐คข
Indeed
My aspiration is to be remote
But I know that never happens at entry level
Plus I do want some social connection somehow
Remote is nice.
I've spent the last 12+ years working with no/small teams of the same people
So I'm itching for some broader socialisation
I've never worked in an office building with more than 3 people in it
I personally like to travel, staying at home is nice for like 3 days. More than that would
I enjoy a mixture
travel \ home \ customers
but after I got the baby I prefer home ๐คฃ with the occational travel
Few years ago I was doing like 14 to 18 countries a year. Figured out that was little to much ๐
yeah, I got a job offer for a job like that before christmas, travel 40% per year, mostly europe
but meh, not interested with a baby ๐คฃ
What I did was pretty much fun all day. Flying drones ๐
Although some sets/movies is too stressful sending another pilot is much easier.
I knew it, you are Leonardo DiCaprio
that feeling when you set deep sleep on a ESP, and only have 10 second wakeup time, and you forget you want to reflash OTA still ๐คฃ
@tidal bronze do you work in film and tv?
Used to work in aerial cinematography, now mainly consult and manufacture
what he means is I threw cameras up into the air and hope they stuck there
Did not happen often

Actually that's how all this started. I remember trying to keep a wooden tricopter hovering for few seconds. Things have come a long way.
That's for little boys
Alexa minis?

@tidal bronze filmed the aerial scenes for Nosferatu

No.
This had better be good Aussieman ๐คฃ
Does anyone know of a docker container with temporary ftp software ? ๐ค like I would like to create a temporary dropbox to send a specific file to a customer

@clear ferry I've used https://zend.to/ for a similar task before.
http rather than ftp though
You can put anything in a docker container :)
http is just as good
I just don't want to expose my entire work ISO folder at once
๐คฃ
but can I host zend myself ?
aye, appears so
Epic drone chase of the ride HELIX at Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden.

I think this is the one
@clear ferry but proper packaging, so easy to create Dockerfile!
I need to look into it ๐ค

Anyone using the dafang hack in their wyze cams?
I did use for a time
might go back to it
a word of warning. IIRC I needed to find a special version of that to properly downgrade back to Wyze stock firmware
It looks like now all you have to do to uninstall is remove the run.sh file from the SD card
It looks super promising to be able to use mqtt to send motion alerts
I have the beta rtsp firmware on their right now
perhaps I made a mistake. Also you may find the dafang far more useful than i did
I think I kept using the camera in the wrong way. I had it set up on my front door area in my porch and attempted to have my secondary monitor constantly display the feed.
Iโve got another Waze camv2 coming so Iโll try and flash it this weekend
I have the pan model in my garage
Yeah I donโt put them in super high traffic areas
Iโve got ubiquiti cams for the main stuff
meh, running an SD card class 6 probably wasn't the best choice ๐คฃ

I ran into a software at work that uses yaml files, ha, haha.
lucky you!
Yaml is the master config format
yaml is love
Toml.... ๐คข
yaml is life
not really, I have to try and figure out how to disable ssl v2 and 3 and the software isn't even supported, and I know nothing about it.
yaml trips me up with it's formatting
isn't disabling ssl bad
Gotta love in the field constraints
Why do you want to disable it
i far prefer yaml over json
yup
I'm looking at you VSC
json is a fantastic pain to type out
Oh gawd
without wut
I had a hell of a time with xml
I was trying to figure out sending SOAP calls to a WeMo outlet
and it uses XML. That is five to ten hours I'll never get back
๐คข
so i just realized my chromebook doesn't have a caps lock or num lock key, and i love it. i don't ever want the numeric keypad to act as arrow keys. i always want them to be, well, numbers
and i can't think of any time that i really use caps lock
Can I just say that I respect you Tediore
you use a laptop keyboard
Those are annoying to use for me. I'm too used to my mechanical keyboard.
lol the chromebook i have actually has a pretty good keyboard. at least for me
my fiancee's work macbook has the worst keyboard i've ever used. must have like 0.5mm of travel
Macbooks are hot garbage
our security scanner is complaining
speaking of, I wonder if there is like an nmap HA integration lol
would be cool to have HA scan everything on the network and show me stuff in lovelace
@hushed basalt i'm not sure they're hot garbage but they're certainly way overpriced. i'm not a fan of apple products either though
HA does have nmap but I think it's only for presence
yeah, I'm also not opposed to something I can run in a VM
other than just nmap lol
cuz i'd like some kind of dashboard
not just the zenmap interface
getting awfully close to a reeee here gentlemen
who me? lol
what is the forbidden topic? nmap?
i want to propose talk about home assistant being ok here as long as it's not asking for support, but you give some people an inch and they take a mile...
I mean if you're just bs'ing
exactly
should be okay, you're in the lounge area of the HA discord.
right. but i'm just a humble purply boi, i have no real power
The overlords have decided that HA Chat in Lounge does not spark joy.
indeed
and so we have cast it down into the support pit
ha, hahaha
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
so, how bout them bears.
grrr
well shit they're actually not last in the division
i don't really follow football though. mainly hockey and even then i haven't really kept up after coach Q was fired
i got me some coffee as well
how'd Rust run Brian?
lol i totally forgot to turn the breaker back on for the outlet where my devices charge... OOPS!
thank goodness for dash charge.. from 0 to 88% in 15 minutes!
breaker for only one outlet, seems overkill
well it's all the GFI in the kitchen
nfgCodex
(that's a joke)
we are kindred spirits
๐ (high five, not pray)
I was fiddling with my breaker and after I turned them all on. My internet was not working. So I called Verizon Tech support and after getting to level 2. The gentle man says "Why don't we check your breaker again?" I didn't turn them all on. I thanked him for his time and apologized for not realizing my own error
@steel urchin 0 to 88 in 15 min? i thought dash/warp charge was like 0-70 in 30 min
hahaha d'oh
that's minimum
68% is minimum expected charge
also, most OS's "normalize" the values, it could be higher or lower based on temps, age, etc
your poor battery then. charge rate of 4C...
๐คข
Yeah I've heard that Super Duper Warp Speed Charge damages the battery over time
super heckin fast charge mode
But since we all replaces every two years who cares lmao
ughhhhh
we'll see how long it lasts
glances nervously in OG pixel xl
i suspect that'll go lower and lower as time goes on... but i rarely get below 90%
After 2 years your phone battery on average only holds 80% of it's charge
Charging your battery above 80% is bad. Having it get below 20% is bad. Batteries are finicky little monsters
i wouldn't say it's bad but charging to only 80% certainly helps with longevity
honestly never had any problems with batteries except NiMH
uses something like 0.5 charge cycles instead of 1.0 or something
Remember when we had to worry about Battery Memory
my garage laptop has gone through some abuse on the charge, 8 years later still kickin
either way, in my mind, batteries can (usually) be replaced in devices even if technically "not user serviceable"
so i'm not even worried
Pixel 4a is out this year anyway, time to plan an upgrade ๐
yeah... until they're so thin that any flex in the body shatters the digitizer ๐คฃ
that's Apple talk Tink
i've tried the 2XL, 3 and 3a XL and returned them all lol
they've all had insane manufacturing issues
4a, not 4 ๐
i still prefer the OG XL
i wanted to like the pixel, but i just can't be ripped away from oneplus
We've got both the 3a and 3 (and I've got the original) - they're all perfectly fine phones
and EFFFFf samsung
4a could be convincing. the only reason i returned the 3a XL is because the OG XL's display spoiled me (QHD instead of HD)
I must admit
2 and first batch of 3 did iirc? ๐ค
I fail to understand the difference between QHD and HD on a phone
it's a tiny screen anyways
and a 6" PenTile OLED at only 1080p is... not the best choice
there's a Q in front
pentile is what makes the difference here
It's called having decent eyesight ๐
text looks "silky" on my OG XL but has jaggies on the 3a XL
i have terrible vision uncorrected. prescription of -6.5 for contacts
astigmatism sucks
so i can only see like 3 inches in front of my face without my contacts lol
I have 8.0 on my glasses
Upgraded my own laptop to 4K recently, now my work laptop looks "soft and fuzzy" ๐คฃ
same man... blind as a bat
but i can't do contacts, they don't form to my eye right and fall out ALL the time ๐ฆ
yeah i'm -7.5 on my glasses
Let me list out my problems as I grumble bitterly. I'm blind in one eye. I've got glaucoma. 8.0 glasses perscrip. and i've got nystagmus (my eye shakes when I try to focus on distant objects)
i went and got my eyes checked a few months ago, she tested my glasses and we went through the whole exam - exact same values in 10 year's time... so that's good at least
I hope we get Smart Eyes soon
I want 20/20 vision and Google AdSense in my eyes plz
oh and make the eyes need the cloud at all times.
so they can remotely shut them off if they're not profitable
lol
-Driving along the road. Vision goes black- Your Apple iEyes require an update. Please ensure you are plugged into your charger!
my 3xl is starting to have charging port issues and weird lockups
my wife is on a 2xl and eligible for an upgrade but pixel4 just looks kinda crap, might go for the 4a though
flash lineage, like a new phone
these pixels are like the first phone I haven't felt the need to flash a new rom on haha
seriously my oneplus one still runs awesome.. 6 year old phone and it's almost negligible in speed difference with my op6
"I spell ostrich with a capital D, you gotta pay for an O cause the D ain't free.. it don't make sense."
@inner vault yeah, i can't remember the last time i flashed a custom rom on a phone
or rooted, for that matter
I plan to run my pixel 3XL for 3 years, then get whatever is newest
no need for root really these days
Are you sure it will even last that long?
as long as I get decent battery life during that time, I could care less about charging to 100% but I do try not to go below 20%
@steel urchin but chroots....
i've run my last 2 or 3 phones for 3 years.
but the kernel upgrades have gone through amazing strides, especially in lineage... you'd be surprised how much more performance you get out of it
maybe it'll crap out, guess we shall see.
If I ever use android again, root is a must
completely different schedulers, both cpu and io, better networking performance
why do you need chroot on android?
literally every process is a jail
So I can spin up Debian?
when was the last time you used an android phone michael?
I'm petty nerdy and I never find a need to root my phone, I've done it before though.
yeah things have changed a lot since then
that's probably the last time i rooted a phone
actually 2015
I rooted my OP6T and then unrooted it a month later lol
yea rooting phone sis so 2000
last phone I rooted was an S4 I think haha
oh wow
Yah, I need to have access to the hardware for network monitoring etc
Canโt name this distro here things
I mean what do you really gain from that on your phone lol
its fun to make it work and then .......
I stopped doing stuff just to do it long ago.
but i need debian server on my phone
For canโt name this k$&I Linux
what? am i having a stroke
lmao
should have bought that ubuntu phone when that was all the rage
especially with everything running through web interfaces now-a-days and what not, if I need something running on root i'll do it on a machine at home and access it remotely or something.
Kali Linux for network pen testing on the go
we got a bunch of those ubuntu phones for dev, they sucked
There now the skids can have fun
and not cuz of the OS, the hardware was just garbage... couldn't hardly use the cellular radio
Rip
@light trout fantastic
yeah because trying to type on the commandline a lot on the phone is loads of fun.
@steel urchin hardware issues in Linux you say?
to shreds, you say?
lol
Linux has been great for hardware support for a while now for me, been running linux at home as my daily driver forever.
lol soundcard.. you deserve issues then
"check out my awesome new AGP graphics card with 512MB RAM! I can play some sweet games on Linux now!"
sadtuba
steam stopped the whole linux support thing too didn't they?
linux boxes are for working not listening to music ๐
also hardware support isn't a linux issue, it's a vendor's being a-holes and not writing drivers or making their stuff proprietary issue.
i do find the /usr/games directory funny on my debian server install. "ah yes, my command line games"
herobrine
"Where are you games?" -frantically clacking on keyboard- THIS IS THE GAME!
Linux where you are the player and the final boss
how about a nice game of global thermonuclear war?
Oh man I love playing Defcon
I did that once just to see what happens
it's pretty cool
if you're in a windowing environment stuff just slowly stops working
What's it like watching Linux commit seppuku?
then it'll drop you to the terminal
lol
then more stuff slowly stops working
then you're finally at whatever it can keep in RAM
windows: can't delete, file is in use
linux: i got u bud
"Who needs that file! YEET!"
file handles schmandles
"Please a select a program to open this file type."
"You want to open a picture in vim? Fuck it."
%
Damn my bash never asked me how I want to open a file
Top is windows. Bottom is Linux fam
nano master race
exactly, it's a text editor. no need to make it complicated
I have read that from Windows 8 on the 64-bit version can handle 2 physical CPU's and 256 cores. Just for anyone caring if he plans to get 2 of the soon available 64 core AMD Threadripper to play some Minecraft
maybe it can run PUBG on low settings
Hopefully
As far as I know there isn't any Intel available to compare. So finally even the last intel fanboy can GTFO
lol
so with linux beta support on my chromebook i can run the debian version of vscode. neato
friend of mine accidentally rm'd some glibc binaries, managed to scp them from another system before everything fubared
whew
there was also the time where the xkcd april fools comic was a working terminal or something along those lines and the same guy accidentally reboted a bunch of production servers because he lost track of his keyboard focus and thought he was still on the comic, not the multi-ssh terminal window he also had open as root on prod webservers
oh no lol
https://uni.xkcd.com/ there it is
oh wow, 2010
@inner vault I've seen that in real life, and I've installed molly-guard on my own boxes to prevent something similar from happening when doing power operations!
@strange vapor yep, that was done in response haha
oooo nice gonna have to install that
A really nasty one I saw was someone rebooting the wrong NAS as the difference in name was a single character in a ugly random name. Took out a whole cluster of servers which got stuck on IO wait
are you an AMD guy Anon?
For context, the NAS in question was a nice big one spread over multiple racks, and not exactly fast to shutdown or bring back up :/
@steel urchin since Ryzen 2 yeah, I had an old i7 before that but since 2012 tho since no money to upgrade
But I just prefer to go with the bigger wave
AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU
k6-2 days is when i got my first AMD, been a fanboi ever since... My current laptop and my optiplex's are the first intel's i paid personal money for
but i've probably spent over 2 million just on intel procs ๐คฃ
I even stuck a AMD ryzen 3400g in my Deskmini Server which serves HA and 20 other Containers now
yeah, those threads are amazing
yeah, esp for that price... insane
i mean, the footprint is great, but not the cost
optiplex sff is pretty good though, much smaller than i envisioned
but i like i can add a pcie riser if i need, and it has a buttload of usb3
ok well 4x usb3, and 6x usb2... still... pretty nice for not needing a riser or hub
The Deskmini Was modular enough for me considering the size
almost went that route, but was worried it was larger than i wanted
still, i'm happy with this unit
1 NVMe in it yet, 16GB fast CL16 3200Mhz ram and a quiet and cool Noctua CPU cooler
nice! yeah that was one downside to my setup... only ddr3 1600mhz :S and no NVME
but honestly, that's probably overkill imo
Woah dude - 2000 Benchmark points for sure ๐ฑ
running 2 win10 vm's running ark servers, 2x Minecraft Java servers, 1x 7 days 2 die server, HA, and about 40 other containers
still have tons or RAM and cpu overhead left over
if the ark servers weren't win10 app, i'd be livin only in docker land and using way less mem
what dashboard is that
Netdata
I stopped Hosting game servers, eventhough Minecraft was what me made become a SysAdmin 10 years ago
hehe i'm literally just getting into MC
Users are unthankful bastards and advertising is not my Kind
i always thought it was a kid's game
Minecraft๐คข
does netdata have their own agent?
minecraft is awesome you twat
i'm using telegraf with influx/grafana
Netdata is a all in one but you can turn it into an agent only
i had a factorio server running for a bit. not now though
To mention Netdata is the best Real time Monitor, wouldn't use backends for that and save long term, that can quickly turn into a mess
i've seen it but i haven't picked it up
it's so pretty
that's why i like the influx route... don't have to worry about storage, retention policies manage that for me
i put everything to 7 days max, which is probably 3-4 days more than i need really
although i need to find how i can make a sensor of the data... if my cpu dips too low i know i have something crashed/failed (like last night when a win10 vm didn't start back up)... super simple litmus test, but it'd work for me
Netdata writes All it's data every second. Storage doesn't matter, rather all the other Hardware that is supposed to Display 7 days of every second with a few thousand checks ๐
It's not too Bad to run it with 24h just in ram
right but on reboot or power failure you lose the data
realtime is almost useless once you get things stable
it's when things go wonky you need that data
and yes, i said wonky
this alexa integration process is pissing me right the fuck off
Correct you Lose the data, but having that Problem and fear there are other problems more important than a Monitoring System ๐
Does your shift Key randomly stick?
Android autocorrection, foreign language german
I often write weird stuff then
But idrc

Any powershell pro here?
Nice to see that all the data stays local on the LAN. Could be great for room presence, too,
I forgot linksys exist
@fallow galleon always best to just ask, and if someone can answer they might... asking for a pro can cause people to feel intimidated to step up... i'm no pro, but i've messed with it enough to answer SOMETHING at some point ๐
ok lemme try my luck here
Afaik scriptblock in powershell runs asynchronously
what if I put a loop in a scriptblock
i swear Ted has some damn bot that looks for words and just emoji's things ๐คฃ
I tried mine and it ends immediately
you're implying that i, myself, am not already a bot nfg ๐
did you try running with an ampersand in front of your method call?
& $myscript -flags
๐ค Don't know what it does
OK
@scenic radish With the new Wellness pods that will change, though.
Why would You run Wellness in kubernetes?
they have a toilet you piss in and it reads your biometrics... i kinda want that
From the above article.
๐คท
ah right lol
"That provides a much greater degree of detail and accuracy which allows Linksys Aware to then detect incredibly subtle movements like the subtle shifts of someone while they sleep, and even a personโs breathing rate."
Why would You run Wellness in kubernetes?
Gah, I'm mixing up my Slack and Discord commands.
I'm not talking about Kubernetes, I'm talking about the Linksys Aware article I posted above.
yep, i got u now tcass, i forgot about that part of the farticle
lol you'll find a light amount of trolling in here tcass
light?

Spooky dev environment hack: add

to /etc/hosts and then all your dev servers can be accessed at http://๐ป

hi there
since this is the lounge, is there a way to make firefox update itself without pushing out a new version?

heh used to do that to servers that had the piezo speakers installed... so much fun to freak people out
Also fun if you hook the network stream up to the speakers

maybe in your sudoers file. I don't see an admin color on you here though ๐
damn
i like the "This incident will be reported" message on my own server. REPORTED TO WHO BITCH????
these little shelly things are pretty slick
๐ ๐ช
I wish I could have a Shelly-like device... but just take out the relay and give me all the GPIO pins
I think one of thier newer ones gives you that option
not the remove the relays but access to the gpio
Hi nfg
Creep lol
Lol I just opened discord and saw you typing
Wtf, sprinkler guy showed up... I was going to open the garage door to access the control panel, and he pulls a tiny remote out and pushed a button and my system started up
O.o
Sprinkler guy hacked yo shit
He's like this dude added over lights for me to control lol
10*
OpenSprinklerPi FTW
I disassembled the guts of the builder-installed RainTurd system and used the box to house the OpenSprinklerPi
rainturd? lol
yeah, RainBird
oh lol. glad someone else says things like ShartThings like i do
it's early 80s technology they still sell today
oof
i need to see what mine is, i forget... but the garage is blocked off atm
I prefer Hunter systems personally... I did irrigation installs for 4 years and got my fill of both systems...
fancy
there's a newer model out now
cannot handle
Rainbird are a pita to program
i don't have a sprinkler. or a lawn for that matter. i suppose i own 1.8% of the landscaping in my condo complex though
I have one sprinkler in my yard... and it is hooked up to my hose. lol
I've got a whoppin 4 zones
one of those 4 zones is absolutely useless
my house was the office/model for the neighborhood when it was built
Well, it's not hooked up right now because it is -14 degrees F and there is a foot and a half of snow on the ground... but it gets hooked up in the summer lol
and that 4th zone had sprinklers that did all of the irrigation around the parking area for potential buyers
after they sold the lot where the parking area was they chopped out all of the sprinkler heads except for one
this is what i have:
I can't tell you how many times I had to bore a hole under parking lots or sidewalks to put 2 sprinkler heads in a flower bed...
teddy bear is bored
I just pee on the grass and call it watered
@last dirge @tidal bronze Yes, I am mostly using D1 Minis. I also have some Digistump Oaks deployed, as well as NodeMCU-format ESP32s.
