green inlet
#

Not according to that article

forest edge
#

wifi aware? it isn't out yet

#

it essentially turns normal wifi into the same mesh system as zwave/zigbee

#

not even requiring a router to communicate

green inlet
#

Sorry, WiFi being faster than zwave. I think these days, when people say zwave, they mean zwave plus

proper swift
#

Ive seen the nifty looking ESP mesh systems

#

My original plan was to try to setup an ESP mesh and then try to hook a few back into the wifi

forest edge
#

well wifi aware will replace or sit ontop of standard wifi

#

there won't be any change or new protocol

#

it's just drop and go, the aware part is like an internall benifit

#

although if they try and use that as a "quick setup" for setting up wifi credentials on new devices that could be real annoying for apartment dwellers lol

shell siren
#

I think most people have very inflated ideas of their Network needs. Enterprises run far more clients per AP than home users, but I know people who insist they must have mesh wifi and gigabit internet to look at cat pictures and watch Netflix

forest edge
#

network setups of businesses are very different than residentials

#

can't even be compared

#

well unless you are like that one person in here who has like 30 vlans lol

shell siren
#

Sure they can be. Bandwidth is bandwidth and clients are clients. Network doesn't care if they are looking at cat pictures or Outlook

#

Even a normal AP in the Enterprise doesn't have a bunch of vlans

#

Only reason they would run multiple vlans on an AP or multiple APs on different vlans is address space

forest edge
#

traffic management so ceo cat pictures load quick while the guys in the mailroom have to wait 2 mins to load up an email

forest edge
#

can't watch that, might find myself seeking out busy traffic to step infront of to end it

forest edge
#

snes usb controller plugged into pi and use mortal kombat fatality combos to initiate scripts

scenic radish
#

a most excellent choice

#

what would the konami code do?

forest edge
#

I was thinking alarm disable that way you panic when your finger slips or you keep fucking it up lol

scenic radish

evil

#

i love it

valid halo
#

I gotta be honest

#

I feel the odd man out here

#

I use my ISP Router

#

I use a wifi extender from Netgear

#

I don't use vlans or seperate networks at all

ocean mirage
#

I use the modem from my ISP router in bridge mode

valid halo
#

I can do port forwarding

#

and that's about it

scenic radish
#

I have my own modem and router but my router doesn't support VLANs. I just have a bunch of devices restricted to LAN only

#

Tbh I feel like a lot of what I hear about exploits is FUD

valid halo
#

FUD?

#

plz explain acronyms thx

scenic radish
#

Fear, uncertainty, and doubt

valid halo
#

Ah. I see.

#

Thanks

scenic radish
#

No probalo

forest edge
#

using the isp modem/router is just bad practice imo

scenic radish
#

Especially since there's usually a rental fee

ocean mirage
#

rental fee?

forest edge
#

well it's not that, it's just you give complete control to them for how secure your network is at any given time. they push updates and those updates can sometimes alter settings

scenic radish
#

Right

forest edge
#

so they =could f up and leave you open to the world lol

brisk glen

they are rocking 2 pros

#

are there any good channels to ask for some help on a camera not working for the still image url but others on my network are with same config / model just different IP ofc.

valid halo
#

I must admit

#

Verizon is stupid

#

If you want to change the password on your Router you don't goto the 192.168.1.1 for it. Oh no no no

#

You go on Verizons WEBSITE and then change it from your account page

#

๐Ÿคฎ

brisk glen

I could never use an ISP router

that shit is total garbage

#

Hi, guys...

scenic radish
#

Did you...have a question? Lol

ocean mirage
#

this is the hello channel

scenic radish
#

Hello

ocean mirage
#

Hello

forest edge
#

hacking a battery operated air freshener sprayer connected to a 5v adapter plugged into a smart plug to spritz the bathroom after sensing no occupancy.

I may just have to do this one lol

#

although I think they already make battery operated ones that do this

steel urchin
#

trailer park boys cracks me up... the end

hushed basalt
#

I'm losing my mind

#

I can't access my reverse proxy on my android phone

#

But I can access it when I'm off wifi

#

And my network works fine otherwise

steel urchin
#

dude, same

#

my android is messing up my DNS

#

my gateway is 192.168.1.1, but it's setting up 192.168.1.254 AND 192.168.10.254

#

which is my modem/router that i'm doing passthrough to my own gateway

#

only android is doing this... ios, windows, linux, osx, they're all getting it right

hushed basalt
#

I'm on tomato too

#

Its stopped working since I changed to traefik

#

I have loopback on, and my reverse proxy has a non standard http port

#

But the port forward takes care of that

#

I'm at a total loss why it's not working though. Everything else seems fins

steel urchin
#

i feel like my gateway is poisoning my dns somehow, and i have no control over it...

hushed basalt
#

My android is using googles dns

#

Even though I have dns intercept enabled

#

I think I'll just throw my tomato in the bin and put pfsense on a vn

#

Vm*

forest edge
#

should switch to 1.1.1.1

hushed basalt
#

I'm on it

#

But my phone is bypassing any lan dns

#

I suspect somehow my phone is trying to access my server directly over the lan instead of through the router

#

Which means it'll be slamming against the wrong port

forest edge
#

wtf did you do lol

#

this is why I stopped messing with stuff like that a long time ago

#

the headaches just weren't worth it lol

hushed basalt
#

Synology captures port 80/443

#

Can't be released

#

Need to get my optiplex cluster up

steel urchin
#

yeah i'm too anal to force a dns entry per device

#

how many optiplexi do you have?

#

i have 2 but only 1 provisioned

forest edge
#

what you gonna do when you get everything set up and then get old and forget how to redo or fix any of it? lol

steel urchin
#

die

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin

setting up an automation for that

#

trigger: Alzheimer's

forest edge
#

guillotine above the bed on a release switch drivin via zwave?

steel urchin
#

rube goldberg... will require dusty's intervention

forest edge
#

yea thats why I went back to simple

#

aside from "communications" closet which only looks like a clusterfuck of devices and wires, it's all really just swap-out-able lol

steel urchin
#

i did a 2-gang to 3-gang upgrade... talk about clusterfuck of wires

#

i did it all pro, except fucking up the sheetrock all around it

forest edge
#

now watch in 10 years you'll be back to a 2gang with a 3 gang plate that blocks off one gang

#

and be annoyed by it's looks lol

steel urchin
#

in 10 years i'll be long gone from this house... i only stay 5-7 years and then i bounce

#

fuck maintenance ๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
forest edge
#

thats why i'm going shelly, i figure the life expectancy of these devices can't possibly be 20+ years or anything legit so when the damn thing dies out and I retain manual control of the switch i'll just leave it in the box lol

hushed basalt
#

@steel urchin i have three

#

Provisioning bare metal kubernetes is a real bear

#

I'm tempted to play around with proxmox

#

Plus it means I can put pfsense on it too

steel urchin
#

i've only messed with docker, i've avoided kubernetes

#

i'd love it if you blogged it โค๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

I don't really want to spend $300 on a pfsense bix

#

That's my plan,

#

Plus I'm supposed to do a talk on it when I'm done

steel urchin
#

recorded?

hushed basalt
#

I don't think they ever record it, but I could always do it haha

#

It's a semi casual meetup

steel urchin
#

local meetup?

hushed basalt
#

Sponsored but chilled

steel urchin
#

ah, well, any info you have i'll watch/read

#

i watch talks all the time, sometimes 2-3 at a time on 1.5-2x... wifey is always like "how the fuck are you understanding what they're saying, when they're all talking at the same time!?"

#

i just tell her i ignore her and everything is clear ๐Ÿคฃ then i have to make my own dinner (jk she still loves me)

hushed basalt
#

I can't wait until I have developers to work around to ask for help

#

Need an andon cord to pull sometimes

#

Rather than plowing away for two days

steel urchin
#

๐Ÿ’ฒ๐Ÿ’ฒ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ธ

forest edge
#

man that BH Onofre thing looks like a fire hazard

clear ferry
#

Which deity did you Aussies piss off @hushed basalt ?

#

I saw you had a cyclone incoming now

hushed basalt
#

Must have mispronounced the furniture names at Ikea

steel urchin
#

lol so apparently Dukes of Hazzard is trending on Netflix US, as it showed a trailer, it was a remake of the Super Troopers "Mother of God" scene with the same actors.. that's hilarious to me

forest edge
#

wait what

hushed basalt
#

@steel urchin i found I can't truly focus on more than one thing at once

#

Although I find talks to be a bit hit and miss sometimes

steel urchin
#

what what @forest edge

hushed basalt
#

Usually when you see a 45 minute talk, it's just full of fillee

steel urchin
#

i can focus on info, but reading lately has been a task... i just lose interest

#

and yeah, i agree

forest edge
#

the duke of hazard thing redone by super troppers on netflix?

steel urchin
#

||also now i see why the wifey like jessica simpson ๐Ÿคฃ||

forest edge
#

oh yea i've seen that, i thought it was something new you were talking about lol

steel urchin
#

oh no, it's just been forever since i've seen it and it made me laugh

forest edge
#

yea jessica simspon is smokin

steel urchin
#

so i've been lurking in the LISO discord, and i see a ton of talk about sonarr and radarr... are they just tv piracy apps?

#

and what's the difference between them? Their "marketing" pages look nearly identical

#

oh looks like radarr is movie related, vs tv

past pike
#

yeah thats the difference

clear ferry
#

Sonarr is TV shows, radarr is movies @steel urchin

#

I use both, and just add stuff, they crawl nzb and torrents and find the best version based on my criteria and rename and move files as needed

steel urchin
#

hmm... might have to look into that

#

i quit torrenting a long time ago, and went to straight up streaming through kodi, but lately it's been garbage

#

and also we have netflix through family and been using that mostly

clear ferry
#

I stopped using Kodi or xbmc 10+ years ago ๐Ÿคข

steel urchin
#

on plex now?

#

i can't get into plex, feels lacking in features

clear ferry
#

What lacks?

steel urchin
#

last i tried a few years ago i was missing audio normalization, audio syncing, pixel stretching, good subtitle services

#

color correction, etc

clear ferry
#

Never had issues with any of that, not even looked at it ๐Ÿ˜›

steel urchin
#

eh, i have

ocean mirage
#

Radarr and sonarr work well

steel urchin
#

but i also don't go for the 50gb bluray rips usually out of impatience

clear ferry
#

And I just use opensubtitles.org and it downloads on demand if users want it, in whatever language they want

ocean mirage
#

Plex works well for me, I even use it for music

steel urchin
#

i might check it out again when i get time

#

it's been like 5ish years

clear ferry
#

I usually do 2GB cap on 1h shows, 1GB cap on 30min shows and 15GB cap on movies,. Concerts I go 30-40GB

steel urchin
#

kodi has always been strong for me though, but again cuz i was streaming... i don't like to hunt for media

#

maybe sonarr/radarr will ease that

ocean mirage
#

Yeah you just add a movie or tv show and it grabs it when available

#

Itโ€™s simple

steel urchin
#

i've never been convinced of the vpn obfuscation aspect....

ocean mirage
#

Moves or copies and renames the files

steel urchin
#

hmmm... i think i see what you're saying

#

so it's like some bogus hash name or something and it renames after dl to official naming, presumably for media scraping?

clear ferry
#

Yes

steel urchin
#

strokes beard in interest

clear ferry
#

I use nzb for 99% of my downloads, where I pay for access and privacy

#

Only obscure stuff I get from torrents these days

steel urchin
#

i found some sata drives in a box a couple days ago... about 15tb of media i totally forgot about

forest edge
#

@clear ferry a data center grunt scalping pirated content? how original? can't you just pluck those movies directly off the server haha

steel urchin
#

nzb = usenet?

ocean mirage
#

yep

steel urchin
#

man i haven't messed with that stuff since like the early 2000's

clear ferry
#

@forest edge fun fact, I have access to raw data movies straight from the distributors actually, but I am professional ๐Ÿ˜›

ocean mirage
#

I use torrents myself, radarr and sonarr can also create hardlinks instead of copying the file so it makes seeding a breeze

clear ferry
#

This is what I install 30PB storage boxes for

steel urchin
#

i used to get access for $1/yr by changing POST headers when ordering service ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

a professional who resorts to what everyone else does by torrenting? lol

clear ferry
#

The raw movies are usually 200+GB each

ocean mirage
#

thats at home

#

professional at work

clear ferry
#

ExactlyPedoBearD

steel urchin
#

i've always worried that i was just signing up to be first in line for fed raids going with usenets ๐Ÿคฃ

ocean mirage
#

I understand the benefits of usenet but from what I understand it can be hard to get older stuff?

clear ferry
#

Not old TV stuff or movies atleast

#

Never had issues

#

Just music stuff

#

Which is what I do torrents for

ocean mirage
#

ahhh okay

#

im happy with torrents either way, cheaper ;)

steel urchin
#

i need to put this gigabit to use

#

๐Ÿคฃ

ocean mirage
#

I should note that I am just describing what I do

#

in no way promoting it, discord staff

forest edge
#

lmao

steel urchin
#

i don't even condone condoning things

ocean mirage
#

No, that would be dangerous

steel urchin
#

i just find it interesting that a group like LSIO would generate images like that

ocean mirage
#

They are literally why I know what LSIO is lol

hushed basalt
#

My old work I think we had cameras that shot 1500mbits

#

About 1TB/hour I think

clear ferry
forest edge
#

we need to find you better icon for that

hushed basalt
#

Then a production would have two or three copies on spinning rust

#

Plus two LTO masters

#

So 5TB/hour distributed before parity

#

Then of course you have to transcode it to actually work with it. So you have to store those too

#

Then a feature would have two units with a camera each

ocean mirage
#

what is being filmed with this bitrate

steel urchin
#

i never know what his emotes mean lol... except ๐Ÿคข

hushed basalt
#

@ocean mirage feature films and commercials

ocean mirage
#

damn, thats some bitrate

#

so what is source resolution

steel urchin
#

that's the "I bought an apple product, treated it like shit because i'm shit, and now i need money for rent" post

hushed basalt
#

3.2k

ocean mirage
#

lower than expected considering

steel urchin
#

similar to "good condition iphone, both surfaces spider cracked but still syncs to itunes, $500"

hushed basalt
#

3424 x 2202

ocean mirage
#

Any of you ever do a hackintosh?

hushed basalt
#

Ew

#

Why

ocean mirage
#

Ill take that as a no

steel urchin
#

fuck osx

#

i've tried, but also ^

ocean mirage
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

It's taken me six weeks to get osx muscle memory out of my system

#

Stupid command key bullshit

ocean mirage
#

im just curious, some people make it out to be a real pain and other act like its a breeze, I can only assume its somewhere in between

steel urchin
#

i have an old blog post, way too long, about how much i've had to fuck with osx to get it to work like a usable system

#

i've had nothing but trouble trying the 2x i attempted

ocean mirage
#

ah okay

steel urchin
#

well 3x, i tried a VM once

hushed basalt
#

Windows 10 is nice

ocean mirage
#

I am mainly thinking for my GF, shes a life long apple user

steel urchin
#

i do like windows... i know a lot of engineers hate on it, but it's actually a great OS

#

and with MS getting into the linux space over the last 10 years, it's only going to get better

hushed basalt
#

A lot of front end devs and designers don't even know how shit their font looks outside a mac

#

You can always tell a site that's been developed exclusively on mac

ocean mirage
#

MS getting into the linux space?

steel urchin
#

hahaha "bro why don't you have a retina display to make it look right?"

hushed basalt
#

My surface laptop 3 is a superor 3:2 ratio anyways

steel urchin
#

yeah, azure, wsl, they're also some of the leading contributors to most of the linux OSS projects

hushed basalt
#

Vsc of course

#

GitHub

#

Oh Linux specifically

ocean mirage
#

She might be able to use a pretty linux distro but then theres the app problem

hushed basalt
#

But yeah microsoft development side of things are awesome

ocean mirage
#

Or I could make windows pretty for her lol

hushed basalt
#

Although I feel sorry for people trying to sell azure to aws users

#

Windows 10 is pretty

steel urchin
#

linux mint is my go to desktop distro, but yeah if she's familiar with apps (particularly any adobe tools) then you're kinda SOL there

hushed basalt
#

Once you get rid of the microsoft edge and candy crush

ocean mirage
#

windows 10 stock is like, boring clean

#

I like it

#

but shes very visually minded

hushed basalt
#

I gave up on linux desktops

#

I spend enough time fighting systems

steel urchin
hushed basalt
#

Let alone fighting my desktop

#

I miss a real package manager

#

Chocolatey is cancer

steel urchin
#

mint is great man, you should spin up a vm and try it out

ocean mirage
#

tl;dr Codex?

hushed basalt
#

I ran mint for six months as my daily driver ;)

ocean mirage
#

Last time I actually tried using a linux desktop it was mint, its nice

#

didnt use for long though

steel urchin
#

it kills a lot of services, uninstalls all win10 store apps, removes defender/cortana/etc

ocean mirage
#

ah nice

#

gonna bookmark that

#

wait, I want defender, can I pick and choose?

steel urchin
#

yes

ocean mirage
#

sick

hushed basalt
#

Cortana is a joke

#

I've never used it

steel urchin
#

it's basically a plethora of functions hashed by name, it chooses the "disable" version and comments the "enable" ones, and you can go back and forth

ocean mirage
#

I mean, how do you know its a joke then

#

I've also never used it

steel urchin
#

windows defender isn't bad, but annoys me since i refuse to buy a license

hushed basalt
#

Lol

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt My primary non-work laptop has been Debian for years, and it's just works. Saying that, I tend not to install packages willy nilly on there. It does Browsing, Email/Chat and Terminal duties, and that's it. If I want gaming I have an Alienware PC in the sitting room and a Switch ๐Ÿ™‚

steel urchin
#

oh, it also includes ninite functionality which is nice

hushed basalt
#

I think I've spent $40 on windows in 10 years

steel urchin
#

i used to work at MS and Dell, if i wanted a license it's free anyway

ocean mirage
#

I spent $5 on a grey market copy once to try something

#

thats it

steel urchin
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

I've just found windows 10 has a good design and just gets out of my way and lets me get real work done

steel urchin
#

kinguin is apparently the place to get a cheap legit license

strange vapor
#

Also have a Windows PC for Music duties. Used to have a older Intel Mac Pro, but Apple decided it was no longer worthy of updates and a new Mac Pro was too expensive, so I went the PC route.

hushed basalt
#

All the linux desktops were always a rabbit hole of little fixes here and there that take all weekend

#

Mac has domain over some creative software

#

But that list is shrinking every year

forest edge
#

i need to get me a pro key

#

I keep slacking on that

steel urchin
#

my biggest complaint about linux is audio channeling... esp as i've gotten into streaming... i hate how hard ALSA is

hushed basalt
#

Real professionals have been kicked in teeth by apple for a while

forest edge
#

people at apple have gotten kicked in the teeth by apple for awhile too

ocean mirage
#

I remember liking the idea behind how audio stuff works on linux but never really got into it

#

I mainly avoid linux because of DAWs and gaming

steel urchin
#

dude you need a phd to get advanced linux audio working

ocean mirage
#

hah

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt I remember the bad old days of having to to compile the Kernel and XServer to get a decent desktop. The only messing I had to do to get X.org fully working on the XPS13 was to adjust the touchpad to how I like it. Everything else just worked, including plugging screens into the HDMI or USB-C port which I was legitimately surprised at!

hushed basalt
#

That and display port features

steel urchin
#

also display port is garbage on a linux kernel

#

YES

hushed basalt
#

Lol

ocean mirage
#

I've never used display port lol

hushed basalt
#

I live for display port

steel urchin
#

i have been banned under 10+ different names on the forums

hushed basalt
#

It's the Cadillac of connectors

steel urchin
#

for talking mad shit to the devs

ocean mirage
#

oh no

steel urchin
#

ooooh they make me mad

ocean mirage
#

whats the good connector then

hushed basalt
#

Hehe I got myself kicked out of the "linux" discord

steel urchin
#

i'm stuck on hdmi, because while there is better standards there's not much better performance

#

they all work like shit

ocean mirage
#

well all my A/V shit uses HDMI and my computer uses DVI

hushed basalt
#

Display port daisy chaining is ๐Ÿ‘Œ

ocean mirage
#

and maybe HDMI for my second monitor

forest edge
#

displayport is nice

ocean mirage
#

at work half the monitors use VGA

hushed basalt
#

Although I'm going to treat myself to a nice 32" monitor after we get a mortgage

#

Full size displayport

ocean mirage
#

thats a big monitor

hushed basalt
#

Locking, doesn't fall out minidp

ocean mirage
#

when are you buying?

steel urchin
#

dude, 4k tv.. done

forest edge
#

i'm using DVI atm lol

steel urchin
#

i got 5 4k tv's for the price of two of my monitors and they outperform it

strange vapor
#

The Intel Mac Pro I mentioned above had an Apple supplied graphics card with 2x HDMI. If I didn't turn on the screens and display in the right order, it would take two reboots to things back working properly again :/

ocean mirage
#

don't TVs generally have a high latency compared to monitors?

steel urchin
#

nothing that i've noticed

ocean mirage
#

fair enough

forest edge
#

display colors aren't the same either

#

tv's aren't calibrated the same

steel urchin
#

i mean, sure... you can get 144hz monitors, but i'm not that much of a dork to need that

ocean mirage
#

I think I am just super forgiving when it comes to visuals and graphics

strange vapor
#

@ocean mirage Not that I've noticed. You'd have all the console fans complaining if that was the case.

ocean mirage
#

I still got my 1080p TV from 2011 and its perfect for me

strange vapor
#

Most of them have a "game" mode to reduce the latecny.

steel urchin
#

yeah they're a bit more saturated, but in the end it's what we seek anyway

#

and i literally play games for "living" right now lol

ocean mirage
#

console gamers dont notice shit like that ndonegan ;)

forest edge
#

blacks are usually all faded lol

steel urchin
#

mmm not on my cheap ass roku tv's!

#

i'm actually really impressed

strange vapor
#

@ocean mirage I can think of some that do ๐Ÿ™‚

ocean mirage
#

I'm just having fun

steel urchin
#

sometimes i think the tv is off, but it's just on screensaver

forest edge
#

prob a display driver that is worth a shit driving it then codex lol

#

I know asus is real bad when it comes to hdmi and tv connections to pc

#

like half thier line shows faded blacks

steel urchin
#

i got a shitty 40in "element" tv for the offices as just background noise tv's, things to not really look at while doing things in there... and honestly i'm impressed for how cheap and flimsy they are, they look pretty damn good

forest edge
#

give it another 15 years they will look like old crt's to ya lol

ocean mirage
#

I just have such little desire to upgrade ever. I've had my 1440p 27" screen for 6 years and I could easily have it 6 more lol

steel urchin
#

but, i've also never been a geek about video quality, but my computer projects miracast to it and it's crystal clear

forest edge
#

yea upgrading is too much work

ocean mirage
#

it helps that I increasingly only play older games

steel urchin
#

and paid probably half that on black friday

#

it's probably not comparable to a $2000 UHD Samsung or the likes, but honestly i don't care

ocean mirage
#

I got a yamakasi catleap, korean monitor from 2014

#

chunkiest bezel

steel urchin
#

heh looked it up, reminds me of this touch panel i have in the garage i need to get rid of

ocean mirage
#

hah

forest edge
#

mine is samsung led 55" from 2006

ocean mirage
#

they were big back then for being the same panels dell used in their nice IPSes but at 30-40% the cost

forest edge
#

want to talk about not upgrading

ocean mirage
#

haha

#

thats your TV though right

steel urchin
#

hehe i think i have the same 55" in the bedroom

forest edge
#

thing still works like a champ.. sound bar I bought for it at the same time died awhile back tho lol

steel urchin
#

that used to be the bedroom tv

ocean mirage
#

now that the soundbar is dead you can get some real speakers

#

now thats an upgrade I appreciate, screw upgrading my TV

#

sound is where its at

forest edge
#

topo lazy, just switched to using tv speakers lol

steel urchin
#

agreed

#

still on an old onkyo 605 though, but i love my polk audio a3/a5's

ocean mirage
#

I used TV speakers my whole life, but man even a good 2.0 is lightyears better

#

mindblowingly better

#

it cannot be overstated

forest edge
#

the soundbar i had was 2.0 lol

#

had the bar and a sub and that was it

#

think they linked via bt of all ways

steel urchin
#

you had 2.1 boi!

forest edge
#

does the sub make it a 2.1?

steel urchin
#

i'm thinking of getting a soundbar for the bedroom

#

yeah

forest edge
#

I thought it said 2.0

steel urchin
#

the .x is sub

forest edge
#

well then 2.1 it was

ocean mirage
#

soundbars are small speakers and poor stereo separation, way better that TV but you got another jump to real speakers

#

good for when you dont have space

forest edge
#

I have a poo emoji bt speaker, could always sit it next to me for surround sound lol

steel urchin
#

well since i got the roku tv, i don't need an HTPC or firetv anymore, so i'm thinking minimal setup... small floating shelf with soundbar and a picture frame or two on it

ocean mirage
#

two floating shelves with speakers ;)

steel urchin
#

hehe but then i need an amp

ocean mirage
#

fine

#

three shelves

#

you can get active speakers pretty easily though

#

but A/V receivers are cool

steel urchin
#

and then suddenly i have a $4000 7.2 system with neural subskull projectors and telekinetic ocular 5d control

ocean mirage
#

exactly

#

now you are getting it

steel urchin
#

i literally only watch trailer park boys in the bedroom (well... all i'll admit)... i don't need anything fancy

forest edge
#

as nice as the roku's are I tend to worry about it's life expectancy

ocean mirage
#

Oh its a bedroom setup? thats fair enough

#

just throw it all in the bin then ;)

steel urchin
#

yeah living room i am on the onkyo sr605 (old old) and polk rti a5's and a3's for 4.1... i gave up the 7.2 due to downsizing

#

i'm watching this "sonarr tutorial" and the dude has installed about 8 apps in 5 minutes

ocean mirage
#

ah fair enough

steel urchin
#

and set up about 10 different integrations lol

ocean mirage
#

You need like...two apps for sonarr

#

sonarr and a download client

#

there are other things you can add on

#

Also yeah I just have some JBL arena tower speakers in 2.0, got them for a tiny fraction of their RRP here

#

sort of want a centre speaker and maybe a sub

midnight adder
#

get a sonos beam in the front and 2 ikea symfonisk speakers for the rear - completely HA enabled

steel urchin
#

i felt the center channel was kind of odd.. it was either overpowering or too quiet to matter

ocean mirage
#

ah okay, I've heard some people really like it

steel urchin
#

as always, audio is subjective, YMMV

ocean mirage
#

and I am not sure I want ikea speakers, nor HA intergration

#

my TV setup is its own simple thing lol

steel urchin
#

is android plex any good?

#

assuming it's identical to desktop

#

i have an android tv in the living room, might check it out on there

midnight adder
#

if you are above 20 years old or so, your ears ain't missing anything from the Symfonisk speakers

steel urchin
#

heh, i'm always hearing things others aren't... i'm in a constant state of "did you hear that?"

#

and i'm well over 20 ๐Ÿ˜›

midnight adder
#

I remember listening to Children of the Sun when I was 14 years old (53 now)

ocean mirage
#

I don't have anything android Codex so I cannot say

#

I am 13 so I need the best speakers

steel urchin
#

ahhh yes sterophonic

#

lol

#

so youtube went onto the next video for sonarr, it's an unraid tutorial this time... never seen it before.. why does it look like a shitty 90's forum?

ocean mirage
#

is it spaceinvader one?

steel urchin
#

yeah

ocean mirage
#

yeah a lot of his videos are older versions but it doesn't look that different to me lol

#

I like how simple, if dated, it looks

hushed basalt
#

@steel urchin hit me up if you need assistance with media apps

steel urchin
#

will do

#

i'm trying to think of what i would watch right now, honestly we've used netflix a ton the last few years since we get it for free

hushed basalt
#

Yeah my plex doesn't get hit much anymore

steel urchin
#

almost got disney+, but instead just bought some stock

#

(about to sell it though)

hushed basalt
#

Do you know docker compose

clear ferry

Disney +

steel urchin

that i do

clear ferry
#

What a failed product

hushed basalt
#

I have it but I haven't used it

clear ferry
#

They delayed the launch in Europe for a half year, so everyone pirated the series

steel urchin
#

i'm basically just shorting the stock ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Now, why bother buying in on it Europe when we have already started the piracy๐Ÿ˜›

steel urchin
#

lol

clear ferry
#

I think it will be launched in may or August

#

Everyone has already watched the mandalorian here BabyYodaSip

ocean mirage
#

why bother with any streaming services when you can pirate anything

#

hypothetically

clear ferry
#

If they only gave us the same offer world wide ๐Ÿคท

#

I would have gladly paid instead

ocean mirage
#

I do actually still have netflix, lots of people use it and its nice to have random shit sometimes

steel urchin
#

yeah any digital product that doesn't release worldwide is literally footgunning

ocean mirage
#

I would not have gladly paid for anything else lol

hushed basalt
#

Basically you want a docker compose to define your media services

#

You can get away with just ports exposed on the lan

#

Reverse proxies are hard

steel urchin
#

i've got about 40 containers stood up right now

#

i've worked with docker a ton.. worked on rancheros for a bit

hushed basalt
#

I put two networks on my media containers

clear ferry
#

I used to have 50ish vms, now I have 12 docker containers and 10 freebsd jails

steel urchin
#

literally every aspect of my desktop was a container ๐Ÿคฃ thanks to jessie as well

hushed basalt

All the lsio stuff is pretty good,

hushed basalt

Pgid and puid env sets are probably the most important thing for them

yeah s6 is great

#

beats having to hammer initd into shit

hushed basalt
#

Sonarr and radarr pull the nzb and pass it onto nzbget over the api, as well as scrape the metadata

clear ferry
#

That GitHub image looks like a candid Polaroid from 1995

steel urchin
#

heh i think it is

hushed basalt
#

Nzbget downloads the public domain binaries and then sonarr/radarr pick it up again

#

Then they clean up the dir and place it into their final destinations

steel urchin

i met her when she worked at docker

i was giving a presentation at dockercon here in austin and she was right after me

@hushed basalt I know of at least on HA deployment in K8S and it just works.

steel urchin
#

kubernetes runs docker containers doesn't it?

#

i think it should run just fine

hushed basalt
#

@strange vapor with local discovery?

strange vapor
#

It's a yaml wrapper around docker ๐Ÿ™‚

hushed basalt
#

That's the 500 pound gorilla

steel urchin
#

it's basically docker compose

#

and a little bit of docker swarm

hushed basalt
#

Some fundamental differences

boreal pewter
#

Yeah Kubernetes -kinda-runs Docker containers. You usually still have to write the whole manifest and just reference the image to pull

steel urchin
#

i've just always used docker, never saw the need to go over to kubernetes myself

boreal pewter
#

There is a app called kompose tho which says it can startup docker-compose plug 'n play

#

With kompose you can also convert from docker-compose to kubernetes manifest... but it lacks many options which I use

#

So actually it's not too easy and definitely not plug 'n play overall. Would suggest some good background knowledge and/or learn a lot ๐Ÿ˜„

strange vapor
#

Doesn't have to be Docker. Have use https://virtual-kubelet.io/ to run K8S workloads on other backends.

boreal pewter
#

I wouldn't specify k8s, everyone has to EVAL hisself if he really needs k8s or an alternative

#

Also cloud usually costs too much money as if anyone with a just-for-fun non-profit hosting would use it ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

I've felt the growing pains of docker

glass glade
#

I'm trying to do a discover on a cover through mqtt, but it do not apear in the device and i get no clue of what is wrong. which channel should i ask in?

hushed basalt
#

I am starting to outgrow it for home :D

#

Part of it's because I'm thirsty for a more robust development experience

#

But I'm also learning for enterprise skills

boreal pewter
#

Watch out for my issue from yesterday in #449717345808547842 , that actually is kinda enterprise grade regarding isolation, networking and network setup

#

But honestly every company lives it's own shit, I had one company that started beginning of this year with Docker when I told 'em 2017 to use docker

#

Current company uses k3s for customer systems up to prod and I usually setup docker stuff for our own services which are not clustered

strange vapor
#

If there's a virtualisation tech avail, it's probably in use somewhere where I'm working. Only last year that I got to gleefully decommissions some Xen servers. There's VMWare, Openstack, K8S and Hyper-V as well as public services like AWS, GCP and Azure in use across the company.

boreal pewter
#

We are killing our own VMWare esxi's and move everything to Azure what comes new.

strange vapor
#

We have requirements with a lot of big customers that data is kept on infrastructure that we run. ie, when said customers call if there's an issue, they don't want to hear that we're on another line waiting for a response from AWS/Azure.

#

Wouldn't be on a line to GCP as I'm pretty sure they don't offer human support!

boreal pewter
#

Our customer chooses his provider hisself, and if we're being asked for suggestions we do that too. only one customer has it's INT in Azure because we declined to host in our house, we only shutdown the esxi in our house. At the other providers we usually take esxi's tho

#

A bit difficult but yeah ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Just our own stuff gets moved to Azure mostly

strange vapor
#

Tried Azure a while ago, but had to go through the interface of a local IT department who declared any Azure stuff should go through them. That killed off the project in a hurry as they didn't know what they were doing. We deployed the whole lot on AWS while they were still figuring out the AD integration.

#

That IT team got disbanded not long after ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry
#

Azure ๐Ÿคข

strange vapor
#

@clear ferry It might be OK... I just never got the privs required to do anything on it ๐Ÿ˜‰

clear ferry

strange vapor
#

@rain swift In our case, we have aquisitions that used everything from Heroku to Oracle Cloud. Also, we have both AWS and Walmart as customers. AWS want their data on AWS, Walmart don't want their data anywhere near AWS ๐Ÿ˜„

#

So, multicloud is a requirment!

forest edge
#

I need something like that for my living room notification light

#

I have one of those salt light things I thought about putting a sonoff on to make it blink but it would just kill the bulb in no time lol

steel urchin
#

i always wondered who bought those salt lights lol

scenic radish
#

@forest edge does

rain swift
#

I won one as a white elephant gift, and promptly gave it away.

scenic radish
#

"won"

forest edge
#

scenic radish
#

return policy is only for 5 seconds, sorry

forest edge
#

I love how when you order something from amazon that you don't really care about it shows up early in the day, something you actually want and they drag their feet getting it to you lol

steel urchin
#

don't get me started

scenic radish

steel urchin
#

never saw parks and recreation, here we go

#

lol what

#

i didn't start watching tv until like 4-5 years ago

#

and even then it was mostly background noise while working

forest edge
#

lead such a sheltered life..

steel urchin
#

mmm certainly not sheltered lol

#

just working 100+ hr weeks most my life hasn't really afforded the time

#

it's kind of a dry humor, which i like

forest edge
midnight adder
#

100+ hrs? over years?

clever mortar
#

Working... 100 hour weeks ๐Ÿค”

#

that's either a different definition of working, or somebody's dead and just not realised it

midnight adder
#

and watching "parks and recreation" then is just my style of homor

last dirge
#

or Ace Ventura

midnight adder
#

*humor

last dirge
#

talking out their ass ๐Ÿ˜‰

steel urchin
#

yeah, it almost did kill me :S

last dirge
#

do you mind if I ass you a few quesions?

forest edge
#

man i miss tone loc lol

clear ferry
#

I thought my 60h weeks were enough

last dirge
#

I ask the guy "hey, why you so fly?" he said "Funky cold medina"

steel urchin
#

it's been a lot of work, and a lot of regrets working for others

#

but, i wouldn't have what i have without all the work

forest edge
#

something had to support your new HA addiction amirite?

steel urchin
#

i'm sort of a glutton, i've realized

forest edge
#

all these switches and holes in walls.. costs add up.. you needed chededer in da bank!

clear ferry
#

Just ask for a raise, I do every few years

#

With some threats ๐Ÿ˜›

steel urchin
#

it's hard to get a raise at a certain point

clear ferry
#

I though so too, then I got 30% this year ThinkEyes

steel urchin
#

that'd be ~75k for me

#

doubt we're on the same pay grade

clear ferry
steel urchin
#

and now you know why i worked 100+ hr weeks

clear ferry
#

I do $90k base pay now

#

If I keep up the overtime I'll probably ballpark $140k

steel urchin
#

nice

#

just don't pull a "me"

river rune
#

Are you in the oil industry nfg?

steel urchin
#

no

#

i've done a lot of crazy stuff though, amazon has bought 4 of the companies i've ran

clear ferry
scenic radish
clear ferry
steel urchin
#

lol wth is that

#

so is parks n rec supposed to be like the office?

#

doesn't feel as funny to me

scenic radish
#

well yes, but actually no

clear ferry
#

No not really

#

They are their own things

#

Both are great

steel urchin
#

imma give it an honest try... there's bits of funny in there, i'm sure it gets better

#

this ron swanson guy is hilarious

clear ferry
#

Yeah, it took a few episodes

#

My wife says I'm Ron Swanson

scenic radish
#

more like Swan Ronson

clear ferry
steel urchin
#

it's a good cast at least

trail crag
#

watching my kids spend money on headphones over the last 6 years I realize what a perfect scam they are. especially the airpods

rain swift
#

We call them ear d*cks

forest edge
#

why a perfect scam? cause of no wires and small easy to lose?

trail crag
#

"Mine others are broken!" he says. oh really? And these will be the "magic" pair I suppose...will always recharge fine, won't lose one...lol

#

@forest edge yeah, and add "pro" to the end of anything

forest edge
#

lol

#

I would find the cheapest thing and say here you go, upgrade lmao

trail crag
#

As soon as my oldest hit high school, my efforts to keep him out of the ecosystem became pointless. His own money. His own choices. Ear dicks, as you say, are in every teen's ears no matter what economic class. Which means an iPhone in each pocket. Combine it with the shame for not being a green bubble in text messages, and even I might be embarrassed to be without an iphone

forest edge
#

lol

#

well you kind of set yourself up for extra costs going down the apple path

trail crag
#

I can only watch him open the package that came in the mail and shake my head.

forest edge
#

lol

rain swift
#

I wonder if there's such a thing where if you want to do something in HA and can't figure out how to do the automation or script, maybe doing fiver or something to get someone else to do it for you and give you the code lol.

forest edge
#

no one likes being the one who does all the work for you, and evven less when it dosen't appear you don't even atleast try and learn how to do it yourself and pass the knowledge along lol

unkempt rune
#

I would name it HA$$

rain swift
#

Depends on if there's money involved :p

static plinth
#

just dusted off the old pi, going for a smart home install for my own self

forest edge
#

how old? if it's anything lower than a 3B you'll hate it

static plinth
#

3B with non-Aeotec Zstick

#

well that was easy

proper swift
#

ha. I love that amazon is offering me a subscribe and save on microsd cards... and that the idea of it is somewhat paletable tome...

gloomy canyon
#

any idea why my windows pc won't connect to one of my sonoffs?

#

ping from the server works fine but not from the pc :weird:

rain swift
#

Can you ping the loopback?

#

And the default gateway?

#

And another box on the same vlan?

bleak ginkgo
rain swift
#

what does it mean when you boost the server?

ocean mirage
#

1 extra psi of boost

#

server is up to 18 psi of boost

river rune
#

People who have Nitro get "boosts" that they can give to servers. Once a server has enough boosts they get extra features

rain swift
#

interesting

#

how do you get psi?

#

or nitro or whatever

ocean mirage
#

forced induction

rain swift
#

ha, hahahaha

river rune
#

You pay Discord

ocean mirage
#

Yeah but that ^

#

its a crock of shit really

river rune
#

It is like $10/month

ocean mirage
#

what a thing to spend money on

rain swift
#

eh, what kind of features could be worth paying for

#

I just need chat lol

ocean mirage
#

you see the banner above the channels on the left?

#

thats like one of the few bonuses this server actually uses

river rune
#

Nitro gets a few things, like using custom emojis in any server, and higher limit on uploaded files and animated avatars

ocean mirage
#

like this is one of the worst servers to boost lol

rain swift
#

hahahaha

#

who runs it?

#

let's tell them to step up their game.

ocean mirage
#

like people who stream on discord can stream at higher res/fps on boosted servers but obviously that doesn't happen here. and just fucks over people with bad internet

#

discord runs it?

river rune
#

I think he means who runs this server...

ocean mirage
#

ahhh

river rune
#

Probably one of the HA guys

gloomy canyon
#

now the connection works...

rain swift
#

yes

gloomy canyon
#

I don't get it
