I think most people have very inflated ideas of their Network needs. Enterprises run far more clients per AP than home users, but I know people who insist they must have mesh wifi and gigabit internet to look at cat pictures and watch Netflix

@hushed basalt My primary non-work laptop has been Debian for years, and it's just works. Saying that, I tend not to install packages willy nilly on there. It does Browsing, Email/Chat and Terminal duties, and that's it. If I want gaming I have an Alienware PC in the sitting room and a Switch 🙂

@hushed basalt I remember the bad old days of having to to compile the Kernel and XServer to get a decent desktop. The only messing I had to do to get X.org fully working on the XPS13 was to adjust the touchpad to how I like it. Everything else just worked, including plugging screens into the HDMI or USB-C port which I was legitimately surprised at!

If there's a virtualisation tech avail, it's probably in use somewhere where I'm working. Only last year that I got to gleefully decommissions some Xen servers. There's VMWare, Openstack, K8S and Hyper-V as well as public services like AWS, GCP and Azure in use across the company.

We have requirements with a lot of big customers that data is kept on infrastructure that we run. ie, when said customers call if there's an issue, they don't want to hear that we're on another line waiting for a response from AWS/Azure.

Our customer chooses his provider hisself, and if we're being asked for suggestions we do that too. only one customer has it's INT in Azure because we declined to host in our house, we only shutdown the esxi in our house. At the other providers we usually take esxi's tho

Tried Azure a while ago, but had to go through the interface of a local IT department who declared any Azure stuff should go through them. That killed off the project in a hurry as they didn't know what they were doing. We deployed the whole lot on AWS while they were still figuring out the AD integration.
