ocean mirage
#

Pretty amusing cause they helped lots

last dirge
#

@tidal bronze almost has me talked into getting a Ubiquiti managed poe switch and throwing up some APs

quartz ether
#

I clearly missed it all ahaha. Oh well.

#

Unifi Poe switches are not cheap.

#

Lovely units and I have some but damn...

ocean mirage
#

Yeah nbd really just funny

quartz ether
#

Brian there are plenty of calculators for how many units you need. I cover my 240sqm house with 1 unit and can get coverage at the end of my drive (50 ish m) away from the unit through brick walls.

last dirge
#

@quartz ether My house blocks signal like crazy

#

my main problem is I need to section off stuff to different APs

#

right now everything's connected to mostly 1 AP and it's dying

#

my house is roughly the same size as yours

quartz ether
#

I use seperate radio's for that, 2.4ghz is all my HASS stuff, 5ghz is for devices/tvs

last dirge
#

with my current WAP I don't get enough penetration on the 5GHz spectrum to use it everywhere

quartz ether
#

If your house is pokey there is plenty of ways to do it including in wall wifi units that replace network jacks and keep passthrough ability. Easily cover single room with one unit.

last dirge
#

an AP on each level would handle it

#

the main AP is an old ASUS router that I'm pretty sure is having hardware failure

#

which isn't helping anything

fallow galleon
#

Does Unifi do handoff better between themselves? Currently I have 1 UAP and a linksys router as AP

last dirge
#

I'd probably just get another one of those same APs and see about relocating some stuff

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge if you want end to end 5ghz do 2 x HD with fast roaming and a LR in the middle for 2.4ghz

last dirge
#

gotta wait a month or so πŸ™‚

#

just bought 2 roborocks and stuff to build a PC

quartz ether
#

I would be doing HD as well if you have high usage devices or lots of devices.

#

lol at the roborocks

tidal bronze
#

I have about 77 2.4ghz and 19 5ghz

quartz ether
#

Not in your house

#

lol

tidal bronze
#

Yes in my house.

quartz ether
#

WTF do you live in a hotel?

fallow galleon

Hmmm fit an AP on the roborock...

what are thoooooooose?

Or do you mean devices ?

devices

quartz ether
#

Lol... I was thinking access points I was like WTF for haha...

fallow galleon
#

still a lot of devices

wintry crow
#

Just... because!

scenic radish
#

signal strength so strong it's a positive number

quartz ether
#

I am no where near that its like 20-30 2.4ghz and another 20x 5ghz when everyone is home/watching tv etc.

tidal bronze
#

By this weekend it will hit 97 x 2.4ghz. Some more tuya converts going live. πŸ˜„

wintry crow
quartz ether
#

That is crazy. Buy an XG unit and get some 10gb going πŸ™‚

tidal bronze
#

I have 2 x LR and 3 x HD pro. No need for 10gb yet. Not more than 2 x 4k Plex streams at a time in the house. Those are all hardwired anyway.

last dirge
#

@tidal bronze I'm pretty sure I've got water ingress somewhere

#

any suggestions on dielectric stuff?

quartz ether
#

I have like 20 LR units at work and I got them YEARS ago. it annoys me they arent discontinued so I have an excuse to upgrade.

tidal bronze
#

AP AC LR?

quartz ether
#

I get lots of "the wifi isnt working" when theres 100+ people trying to use it.

quartz ether

Got 5x UniFi AP-AC v2 when they couldn't keep up for our high use sites and they got discontinued like a year after and now I cant do anything with them they are stuck on the same settings. No firmware can't provision outside of ssh

tidal bronze
#

That's the bad thing about unifi old ap's

quartz ether
#

I think I have like 6x LR in a crate, I just refuse to put them back into sites now and instead upgrade to newer gear.

#

I kinda wish that Unifi made a universal mount that worked for ALL of their AP's not depending on if have a big or small unit.

lorry

#

what a british word

last dirge

is a lorry the same thing as what would be called a "straight truck"?

#

or box truck?

clever mortar

Yeah, mostly

clear ferry

Box truck I would say

clever mortar
#

Also includes articulated units though

Close to the Norwegian word

clever mortar

That's also an artic

last dirge

then it's a bendy bus

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but they're insane different

#

Or possibly bonkers

last dirge
#

so you call the thing that comes apart the same thing as the one that doesn't?

clever mortar
#

Sometimes

clear ferry
#

Yes same here

clever mortar
#

Lorry is the all encompassing word for all sizes

clear ferry
#

We just say Lastebil to cover all

clever mortar
#

A "box truck" is more a truck, except a truck may also cover much larger things

clear ferry
#

Roughly translates to loading car

clever mortar
#

A van is what we call the things larger than a car, and smaller than a truck

#

A large van can be the same size as a small bus though

last dirge
#

like a sprinter

clever mortar
#

Or, about the same size as a small truck πŸ˜‰

last dirge
#

those are huge

clever mortar
#

Yeah

last dirge
#

have you seen the "small trucks" in the US?

#

like the new Ranger

#

I think it's different to what you guys get as the Ranger

clear ferry
#

A sprinter we call a Varebil or goods car πŸ˜‚

last dirge
#

we call it a "free candy" van

clever mortar
#

Yeah, that's a pickup

clear ferry
#

We only use that term about the American vehicles

#

Like the Chevy astro

last dirge
#

that's a "carpet installer" van

#

or a painter van

#

depending what's on the roof πŸ™‚

clever mortar
#

Over here, pickups are generally viewed as being very different from trucks (or vans)

last dirge
#

so over there

clear ferry
#

In Norway 1/700 cars is a pickup roughly

last dirge
#

could you even drive something like a F-150 Raptor on the streets?

#

or is it just too damn big?

clever mortar

Yeah

#

I know folks that do

There is a very strong gradient in my area.

scenic radish

πŸ†— πŸ’₯ πŸ‡ͺ πŸ‡·

steel urchin
#

yeesh... we had flooding that high in houston a few years back

clear trench
#

The PCH will flood, but that was a particularly dumb place to put a big highway.

#

You can fix that.

#

Just pass flood abatement rules.

#

Leave some marshland around.

#

The flooding was very uneven by county, because some counties had stronger flood abatement regulations.

steel urchin
#

i know nothing about city planning... just that Austin has NONE

clear trench
#

Most cities don't

#

That's the norm.

#

But this is more of a building regulation than a city planning.

#

"If you pave over X square feet of ground, you must abate Y gallons of water"

#

It's why a lot of business parks have huge holding ponds.

steel urchin
#

yeah we have that now, but it's too late

clear trench
#

Well, next time.

#

It basically can't flood where I live.

#

The gradient down to the ocean makes any sort of flash flooding impossible.

#

And we're too far above the ocean for any sea rise to affect us directly.

#

(Aside from the PCH)

steel urchin
#

i've been saying musk/gates should throw their money at an optimized build to start with all their tinkering... enforced automated transportation, full delivery for everything, etc etc.... pave the way for the future rather than trying to retrofit everything

clear trench
#

But if we just abandon that and build a train, I would be very happy.

#

Automated cars are dumb.

steel urchin
#

doens't have to be cars

#

can be a rail system

#

they're talking about installing a gondola system here that goes like 40 miles... that scares the bajesus out of me

clear trench
#

Sure, but the humans are a tiny percentage of the cost of a rail system.

#

You could automate it, but why?

#

The big cost is the rails.

steel urchin
#

doesn't have to be physical rails, could be image-based tracking

clear trench
#

Rails are the appropriate answer.

midnight adder
clear trench
#

Largely because you can't put cars on them.

steel urchin
#

you're thinking of pure retrofit situations πŸ˜‰ automated cars become REALLY smart when there's not any precedence on how traffic systems work

last dirge
#

clear trench

Automated cars are dumb because they're cars.

Cars are a massively inefficient way to move humans and cargo.

midnight adder
#

his son lives there

clear trench

I expect his son to be all kinds of fucked up.

steel urchin
#

ah so an entitled rich kid

#

even worse

clear trench
#

Largely because the do-nothing children of rich people are fucked up, and it's Dr. Phil we're talking about here.

#

He's basically an anti-therapist.

#

I'm sure therapists need therapy for all the dumb shit they hear from patients from his shows.

scenic radish

clear trench

As always though, I don't really blame him. I would probably do dumb things on TV if it was that lucrative.

#

I blame all the people who enable and reinforce this behavior by watching him.

steel urchin
#

lol why does my brain always think "suffers from the flu?"

clear trench
#

It's well known that being rich actually lowers your empathy.

scenic radish
#

because "affluenza" is a made-up word from "influenza"

steel urchin
#

oh i didn't know that

clear trench
#

I think made-up is too perjorative.

#

It's a portmanteau, technically.

steel urchin

It is a portmanteau of affluence and influenza

humans are clever creatures

clear trench

clear trench

It's tricky to define rent within a city.

I mean, what exactly do you mean by "LA"?

#

Because if you mean the city of Los Angeles, that does not include Beverly Hills.

tidal bronze
#

BH is not accounted for.

steel urchin
scenic radish
#

good lord

clear trench
#

If you mean LA county, that stretches way out into the valley with very very cheap rent.

steel urchin
#

about 50ft across the street from my house

clear trench
#

Yeah, that looks familiar.

#

I can buy a condo here for $850k and 971 sq ft.

scenic radish
#

wtf

steel urchin
#

so take those lists with a grain of salt

#

oh that apartment is 4.5 million if you want to buy it

clear trench
#

You need to factor in CA property taxes, which highly favor long term owners.

scenic radish
#

my 1100 sq ft condo was literally 10% of that cost lol

steel urchin
#

for the ~700sqft

clear trench
#

CA property taxes are limited to grow like 1% a year, and the property tax transfers from parent to child or grandchild.

#

Which is a bit feudal, IMHO.

forest edge
#

@scenic radish it didn't come standard with curtian walls?

steel urchin
#

i'm tired of taxes... i pay $30k annually on a house that was bought in cash... i'm tucking my tail and moving out some lol

midnight adder
#

here in Helsinki we average about 5500 eur per square meter for purchase price

clear trench
#

So it's often much cheaper for older owners to stay rather than downsize, choking out the fluidity of the market.

#

Isn't TX a low income tax state?

clear ferry
#

I paid $210k for my 2500sqft house ThinkEyes

tidal bronze
#

@steel urchin there will always be pockets in every city that's super expensive. Does not mean the city is most expensive. Like BH, hidden hills etc. We don't talk about LA using hidden hills values πŸ˜‰

clear trench
#

That's the issue with low income taxes; in theory they sound great, but chances are that the state needs to still find its revenue somewhere.

forest edge
#

I'll stick where I live, own 4 homes and pay less than 7K a year in taxes lol

steel urchin
#

it's going to vary by county

clear trench
#

Sure.

#

But it's going to be higher in states without income tax if you adjust for density, because the state will have less revenue to transfer downwards to local municipalities.

steel urchin
#

Austin isn't very large honestly

#

just expensive

#

something like 160ppl/day moving in

clear trench

Checking what property tax would cost me here

scenic radish
tidal bronze
#

Since you mentioned many times that Austin was super expensive just did some googling probably that pocket was not surveyed recently.

forest edge
#

imagine if texas actually separated from the US lol

midnight adder
#

woohoo

clear trench
#

So a $800k condo in LA would cost about $10k a year in property taxes.

#

So that's nice.

forest edge
#

actually the front of a microwave being a screen is a rather good idea

steel urchin
#

i told my wife i was going to sell everything and we'd just become beach bums

clear trench
#

The chance of that happening from a cultural perspective is becoming less and less each day as Texas becomes more urban and purple.

steel urchin
#

then she reminded me that i hate sand

clear trench
#

Ski bum?

scenic radish
#

@forest edge at first i laughed thinking it's ridiculous but it is actually a decent idea

clear ferry
#

I pay $600 in taxes and all renovation and water per year ThinkEyes

scenic radish
#

hopefully it's designed to withstand high heat

steel urchin
#

i'm a texan, laughs in 100F weather

#

i do want to move away in ~5ish years... just no clue where to go

scenic radish
#

microwave above the stove i mean

forest edge
#

yea alot of people have/want some kind of screen in the kitchen for wwatching cooking shows ect and slapping it on the microwave saves space lol

clear trench
#

CO is nice.

steel urchin
#

yeah but not much cheaper really

clear trench
#

No, not really.

steel urchin
#

and the housing is really old and janky from what i've seen

clear trench
#

Depends.

#

CO has lax zoning laws, when they need to build they build fast

steel urchin
#

i've been looking at places where legalization has passed

#

vegas is disgusting

clear trench
#

I mean, non-coastal CA isn't expensive.

steel urchin
#

i've heard that actually

clear trench
#

Bakersfield or similar.

#

Depends on your preferred activities of choice too.

tidal bronze
#

@scenic radish that microwave looks interesting

scenic radish
#

yeah, cool idea for sure

clear trench
#

I hike and fly fish, so being a days drive away from the mountains is nice.

steel urchin
#

i need to find a good way to disconnect like that

clear trench
#

CA is nice in that most outdoor activities are available.

steel urchin
#

i tried auto mechanic work, wood working, and both lead me right back to the computer for research

clear trench
#

You could, if you so desired, ski and surf on the same day where I live.

tidal bronze
#

Finding the time is the issue @clear trench πŸ™‚

clear trench
#

Fly fishing is nice.

#

Yeah, trust me. I know.

#

Fly tying is also really nice.

#

Low research, medititative, results in a physical output that is pleasing.

#

And you can catch fish with them.

forest edge
#

that microwave is gonna be like 4k lol

clear trench
#

Fuck that.

#

I mean, for privacy reasons I was never gonna buy it.

#

But that's insane.

#

If fishing isn't your thing, you could always do chainmaille.

quartz ether
#

Just wait for the kids to put a fork in it.....

scenic radish
#

@forest edge not even surprised

clear trench
#

Rumiges around for photos

forest edge
#

after it's year warranty the screen craps out lol

quartz ether
#

To be above an oven it needs to be an extract fan... so will get clogged with grease and shit and need cleaning. Trying to cram that a microwave and a MASSIVE touch display into a box... then have it all above heat. Seems like the designer hasn't really thought it out

scenic radish
#

it could be vented

#

for the price it better not be a recirc one

#

but yeah, not as good as a dedicated range hood

steel urchin
#

our microwave has a metal shelf in it... i took it out immediately because... well damn just because my brain doesn't allow it

scenic radish
#

mine has one of those, it's awesome

steel urchin
#

the manual said " make sure it's not touching the sides or it will cause explosion"

clear trench
#

Mine has one too, neverneeded it.

scenic radish
#

it rests on plastic hooks

#

i use it often

clear trench
#

Blocked my taller coffee cups

steel urchin
#

we don't use the microwave much... very much a stovetop and oven family

clear trench
#

Shifted from eating out & cooking to a meal kit.

#

Lots of microwaving.

scenic radish
#

my microwave is an italian ice softener

#

well, and food reheater

steel urchin
#

lol

#

i have a friend that microwaves his ice cream

#

i've never done it, but actually thinking about it the best time i like ice cream is shortly after we get home from the store with it, so it's a little softer

forest edge
#

lol icesoup

scenic radish
#

i microwave italian ice for 10 seconds

clear trench
#

Someone needs to adjust their freezer.

scenic radish
#

softens it just slightly

clear trench
#

Italian ice is one thing, it's higher in water content.

#

But if your ice cream is too hard, your freezer is too low.

forest edge
#

too soft and you need a new freezer

clear trench
#

Yup.

#

That's actually the standard metric, because so many people have ice cream and it goes soft before ice melts.

midnight adder
#

I have reached the height of HA success: I can sit in my bedroom and type into my web browser "I've had it with these motha fucken snakes on this motha fucken plane" and it will be spoken by a sexy accented british women over my sonos speakers in the library at high volume thus scaring the shit out of my wife who is sitting in the library remote working

#

and possibly in a skype meeting with customers

forest edge
#

height would be to do it hands free

steel urchin
#

oh man, does anyone remember the nuance TTS engine??? They had a valley girl voice that sounded πŸ‘Œ

#

i used to use that for EVERYTHING

scenic radish
#

🀨

forest edge
#

I still can't say i've heard an ai voice that was worth a crap

midnight adder
#

the finnish ones are actually far better than the english ones

forest edge
#

i take that back, in movies i hear ai voices that are worth a crap lol

scenic radish
#

it's because those are finished and the english ones aren't

midnight adder
#

back to drinking wine and reading about assassinations

edgy path
#

Sounds like a good evening πŸ˜›

#

Are you female, by any chance? xD So far i've heard only of woman LOVING that shit

clear trench
#

Assassinations?

#

I love reading about violent history.

clear ferry
#

Female assassination facianadios

wet pilot
clear trench
#

Like the fact that Franz Ferdinand was taken out by a single very low caliber bullet.

#

.32ACP

#

In the modern era they might've been able to patch him up

wet pilot
#

the human body is very squishy in some very vulnerable areas

clear trench
#

FMJ, old powder.

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot wtf, only for Americans though, 1% of showers in Norway use that kind of shower head πŸ˜‚

wet pilot
#

πŸ˜›

clear trench
#

Most deaths from those types of wounds are from bleeding out of the primary wound cavity, which gives emergency responders a good chance at stabilization before death occurs.

forest edge
#

low voltage or not I would NOT install anything in my shower that requires a plug lol

#

batteries sure but nothing with a plug

clear trench
#

There's actually relatively few places on the human body where the primary wound cavity is inherently fatal.

#

Heart and head, mostly.

#

(Lungs, sometimes)

clear ferry
#

And my axe!

wet pilot
#

for large objects at least

#

bullets defeat our natural defenses which are mostly aimed at blunt force

clear trench
#

Yeah, without medical attention you're in serious trouble.

#

But we've gotten really good at treating low velocity bullet wounds.

midnight adder
#

No, I am definitely not female

forest edge
#

well not for the right price anyways.. what i always say..

clear trench
#

Oh, apparently his jacket slowed down medical attention.

#

A modern EMT could've gotten it off with shears.

scenic radish
#

I find it funny that I indirectly chose your avatar

midnight adder
#

thinking of getting an external disk for the rpi 4 - any recommendations?

hearty depot
#

not all usb-sata adapters are compatible

midnight adder
#

i was thinking usb3 <--> m.2 ssd

hearty depot
#

do whatever pleases you
but why m2 - usb3 bottlenecks anyway

midnight adder
#

goal was tiny, lightweight and fast

hearty depot
#

state this first 🀣
I would love to use some really small usb thumb drives - but I bet they ll die fast

forest edge
#

they are imp[roving usb sticks and sdcards to handle how we abuse them

#

your gonna be paying for that improvvement, but it is available lol

hearty depot
#

yea I think they called A2 cards

forest edge
#

yup

hearty depot
#

not to expensive - only sad thing is that i bourght a army of micro sd cards already

steel urchin
#

Class 2 I think is for lots of rewrites? I might be wrong

#

I still have some compact flash laying around I should dispose of

clear ferry
#

SD cards 🀒

#

@steel urchin classes is only minimum speed guarantees

fleet urchin
