javascript is the new java imo
TBH I want to learn whatever is best for RPi, if that would be best for running HomeAssistant... Though knowing more is obviously better
And knowing how the front end works is immensely valuable even if you don't work in it
java was meant to be WODE (write once, deploy everywhere) but runtimes completely ruined that
python
I love the idea of tinkering with a $35 computer
just stick with python
and try not to dab too much.. that can really twist your brain lol
I made the mistake of buying a miniPC that actually runs a full copy of Windows 10.... It runs like ass with nothing installed. I tried to set this up as a viewing station for my Amcrest NVR, but of course I find out after spending the money on a 32-CH NVR that they use proprietary software.... so I am forced to use Windows
once you get one down solid then others seem way easier but dabbing across multiple at the same time can really mess you up sometimes
gotta start somewhere!
Right.... but wouldn't that be like starting my car to run a heater? Or am I misunderstanding python? I take it python has no gui
Python can be a bit of a pig to get installed
esp with the new python3 store bs they pulled
I don't think it's hard at all these days
it's pretty much just clicking install lol
Ehhhhh
for a hobbyist, you're right
Lots of people struggle with the venv thing
when you need python2 vs python3, it's a pita
Zappa can die in a fire, refuses to run without a venv even in a container
don't start with anything lower than the latest python lol
But if you install python from the python website, and learn how to pip install pipenv
That can take you a long way
Pipenv isn't fantastic but it's simple
And works with vsc pretty natively. Unless something screws up.
Make a free private repository on github for each project
Install github desktop
And learn good security practices from the beginning
😭
No more video store rentals for you!
Remember when being sent to your room was punishment
Nowadays you'd have to take away like 6 devices to make that effective
How do I put a price on someone's head
1000 dingo dollars to whomever takes out the Ted
@scenic radish the images are getting oveerboard
lol i never got sent to my room for being in trouble
because i had too many things to tinker with
sry, pls no ban
My daughter slept in until 7 today
np
It's a miracle

and that's why i didn't have kids lol
They sure are expensive haha
especially if they free float all way through into thier 30's
I'm assuming everyone is having issues with badnest right now?
bad nest or badnest?
nadbest?
bestnad?
0️⃣ ❄️
sucks because I have the nest doorbell
walk away for 5 minutes and have a text wall to read lol
stay away from cloud controlled stuff
It do be like that sometimes
yeah I bought the nest stuff before I was into homeassistant
100% staying away from all cloud stuff
reeeeeeeeeeeee intensifies
inside i want to NOT use alexa, but the mic array is too good
python 2 was officially EOL on the first wasn't it?
Lol
End of life and businesses
one thing that I always hated about php was the same faults as python when it came to older vs newer revisions
Yeah I started with the original Amazon Echo... then added 6 Echo dots.... moved two dots to another house but on the same account (yes it still works over different wifis)... and added two Echo Show 5s.... It is nice being able to bark out any command anywhere in the house and having lights and devices change.
Echo 🤢
yeah i love it
as someone who's made a lot of intrusive technology i have avoided it for so long
Just channeling my inner @clear ferry
but... this came with the house, i tried playing with it, and have actually enjoyed being to not only have my lights turn on by voice, but to have a verbal punching bag
lol
I need to reposition my google home minis
if your going to get a voice thing get a google home.. does soo much more lol
the things she's heard
Kinky
or build your own
Placement makes a huge difference in how well it works
I need to wall mount some
But i can't drill holes
So I'm limited to adhesive on glass or tile surfacss
my echo show is like 150ft from my front door, and it hears me just fine which is why i'm still using it
YOU'RE NOT MY REAL MOM, ALEXA
My google home never gets any use
cielings are best
The mics are crapper
Floor mount it
Stair mount it
@hushed basalt I use mine mostly for TTS
Right in the middle of the floor
under the bed could be better location
Just swag the cable like a fan
The funny thing is, as a 32yo millennial, I fit the stereotype of "being reliant on technology".... yet I know I could/would give it up easily if I had to. I think we rely too heavily on technology.... Technology is supposed to help our lives, not replace essentials.... My workplace has been switching over to all digital for a few years.... which is great, but when you don't have the paper records for backup and the system goes down..... you're f#(ked.
Makes me think of those memes where they show a log cabin in the mountains with 100 acres and a pool.....you read the caption "It could all be yours but you'd have to give up Facebook for a week".... and you have all these idiots jump up and say NEVAR!!!!! Meantime, I'm sitting here thinking I'd not only give up all my technology but my left n#t to live there lol....
I appreciate technology, but I can still live without it if I have to.
but t's wifi..
You're wifi
I admit, I have both Google and Alexa
i think every millennial feels that way, but when push comes to shove, no way
It works with ethernet over the usb
go without power for 12 hours, see how you fair
I like the google home cause I can send alerts to my moms and scare her lol
wut @hushed basalt
lol I have a few times, no big deal
i lose my mind after about hour 6 of no internet and no power
I just deactivated my Facebook last night, just to step away for a few weeks, too much BS
i never deactivated my FB, but i don't use it
facebook 🤢
Can't remember the last time I used facebook. No one needs or wants to know what info on a daily basis
I just got done buying something very similar
setting up my IP camers
with PoE
got a bad one the first time around
the google lan to wifi over microusb is much nicer looking
Next company I went with worked great
the echo only has a power and headphone jack
two camers, one line run
no usb
You need two bits for the google home mini
I guess running PoE to IP cameras, each camera only utilizes 4 of the 8 lines in a Cat6 cable
oh my apologies
Alexa commit suicide
A poe splitter with USB out
didnt realize thats what you were doing
commit sauce on the side
And a ethernet and usb injector
go commit not living
Electrician would probably charge you $250-$300 per power point installed
I don't think i ever seen a lan splitter like that before lol
yeah I had to use some RJ45 connectors
a simple 4 port switch would have been cheaper and better lol
But I have two 4K camreas running over one Cat6 run.... with a splitter on each end so you still use two ports on the PoE Injector
I have a lot of cameras lol
planning for more
I live in NY, where they just started that new bail reform
that....
and I work in LE for the last 11 years, so.....
kinda gotta watch my 6 lol
Bail reform?
speaking of... i have like 5k ft of cat6e, 300 rj45 tips, and ~100 banana plugs to offload
Rail beform?
TLDR: Anything short of a violent felony gets an appearance ticket and immediate release
That's the reasoning.... nothing like throwing the baby out with the bath water
forgot to pack chute
regarding python....
I'm looking at Khan Academy, Code Academy, and a few others.... any personal recommendations?
@hushed basalt wut?
egghead, but only cuz i know the owners
just blame it on tediore, these mods are always looking for excuses to blame him for things anyways lol
youtube is a great resource as well
So is ||made you look
||
there are crap tons of step by step n00b tutorials for python on youtubbers
Layperson: "You're a computer whiz"
Reality: You know how to use Youtube + Google like a boss... anything you could possibly want to do, someone else has already gone through the hoops and figured it out, then posted their instructions on how to do it lol
It's funny because it's true.
||nope||
i always tell my new hires "You get 2 monitors... One to program on, the other for google"
lmao
And the third for pr0n
and waste the conference room?
PROgramming kNowledge
lol
if your not double stack double 75" then you wasted your money
I'm considering a big 32"
Then put the two 1920 x 1200s in portrait on the sides
The low dpi will erk me though
Portrait monitors are nice
if your neck isn't hurting from looking from the start menu to the clock then your monitor is too small
Thank you @steel urchin
I definitely haven't streamed enough P||ornhub|| to fill the library of Congress....twice..... definitely not me...
|| 🍆 ||
.....when you mess up your markdown
Slack is stripping out their markdown
They're basically dumping anything that's developer friendly
slack died a long time ago for me
I can't post code blocks on mobile anymore
That's so stupid
anyone still using slack is a luddite
Discord is surprisingly good for being free
yes, i just gate kept yo ass
I don't pick what the meetup groups use :D
Traefik uses slack too
But they also chose toml so....
My work is using teams and I want to barf
||🤢 ||
i refuse to work somewhere that sticks to something because that's just what they do
"we've always done it this way"
if i can't influence the company then i'm out
"best idea wins" actually means something to me
"just because it works doesn't mean it's right"
@scenic radish since you’re a fan of the ecobees which would you recommend? 4?
nfgcodex: alright! we're dropping everything we have into packing peanuts because they are the future!
None of that Alexa shit, it's a damn thermostat
Sounds good I’m going to order one tonight
Need to find a replacement doorbell too apparently
Ecobee's cloud API is trash, fair warning
Maybe just put a POE camera out there
It is HomeKit compatible though
Yeah I saw you can do it locally with HomeKit
peanut packets > packing peanuts
mine's a Carrier
And there's a certain way you can connect it to forbidden topic with HomeKit
😉
Forbidden topic?
Lol
just go with Honeywell.. its all local lol
So are the hot singles in my area
I mean you can use thier cloud type stuff but you are not locked to it lol
Any zwave thermostats that are decent?
i have the honeywell zwave, it's not that bad.. i mean... i tell it to be a temp, it goes to the temp
But it’s gotta loooook nice
Get a dbrand skin for it
I already told my wife we’re getting rid of the nest and she’s like WHAT BUT IT LOOKS SO GOOD
Make it look like carbon fiber or some shit
https://www.honeywellhome.com/T6-Pro-Z-wave is what i have
There's also the venstar wifi thermostat with a local API
my thermostat is in a lil cubby tucked in a small hallway between some auxiliary bedrooms (our studio rooms)... no one ever sees it
Mines out in our main hallway
Trim plate 🤢
in a cubby? wtf is the point? it's SUPPOSE to get air flow
it gets airflow
every 10 ft is an intake
Yeah ideally it should be near a return
Because the old one they had on there was huge
Yeah a return is right around the corner
intake=return ... my bad
U good
it's a really cool change from my previous houses, where there was 1-2 returns
perfectly balanced pressure
ideally there should be a return pretty close if not in every room
I have a single return 🤢
ew
But I'm also in a condo
that's common though
Heck off
curtains count as walls
HECK OFF
I've never seen more than a common return in Australia
it's actually a decent size, but i have the world's smallest hallways because it's basically a rectangular layout lol
Although I don't go in rich people's houses
🤑
heard about that
images from random cameras appeared in people's feeds or something?
Yep
just can't seem to trust these people from across the ocean
what aspect? 3:2? 16:9?
Bruuuuhhhhh.....
Aircon for example. We have ducted aircon,
studs on the inside and the wall paper on the outside?
With leaky ducts in a hot attic underneath black tiles
oof
Try a house built in 1850 and then come talk to me about nothing being standard....I got ripped up phone books and tree trunks in my basement walls as I'm trying to run Cat6 riser.... Lol
And no return path with the doors closed
Not one window is the same size
Well maybe you should have thought about that when you built the house
LMAO true true
:D
there is a youtube channel that features plumbers and they are always having to waterjet out people's drains that are only 1 1/2" - 2" max that is the main drain for like an apartment building. if that dosen't tell you there are issues then i don't knwo what does lol
Ouch
all in Australia
Our apartments are.. a travesty
Even balconys are an abomination
All they do is convect heat in and out of your main slab
I did buy a GE window air conditioner that I connected to my Alexa devices and I will say barking out the temperature was pretty sweet this summer
Last Summer
Any pillow recommendations? Mine are flat af
No pillow
US
I don't use a pillow most of the time
You don't really need pillows
Door undercuts work 50/50 for returns or you can redo the duct work. Everything is fixable
@tidal bronze can be difficult in a condo
Plus undercuts would let in too much noise and light
Precast concrete ceiling and floor
I'd put in acoustic vents if it was my house
4️⃣ ✈️
@scenic radish i liked these https://amzn.to/2STGwQV
my wife wanted a bit softer and likes the amazon basics https://amzn.to/2QFzuMD
I'm pretty sure no installers ever check static pressure
Amazon basics has some good shit if you know what you're looking for TBH
@hushed basalt agreed
yep, i've yet to be disappointed by Amazon Basics ... just amazon itself
If I was building I'd probably just have split cartridges
Avoid all that ducting fiasco
I'd be doing a HRV too
simple solution https://images-cdn.9gag.com/photo/a49Lgqp_700b.jpg
I like splits
They can be noisey
Although the ducting in my rental is noisey as hell Atm
Splits are good but aesthetically not pleasing
@steel urchin ooo thx
pillows are so hard to find and be perfect
actually, this round i returned some gusset pillows i got on amazon to kohl's because they have some deal where you drop off there... i found a kohl's hack to get 25% off in store, and went back to their pillow section and got like 6 pretty decent pillows for the price of 2 i got on amazon
Yeah I never understood why they give you a coupon lol
Then again everything at Kohl's is WAS $1200 NOW $30!!!!
hahah yeah
"you saved 99%"
Australia?
I'm in straya yes
how do you tell that from that image
That's not my house
But I mean a well placed split system with a good design can look good enough
They always jam them against the exterior wall though which is so dumb
I know it's easier to install,
But it fails at acheiving what it's designed to do as well
I do have a split in the garage that never gets used. Super silent
That's pretty sleek
Ooh that looks nice
Hiding in a soffit is a good idea
Oh you said bulkhead cartridges above
Yikes
Looks like the default Lovelace theme colors
not having NAT hairpinning is pissing me off
Oof. Even my Google WiFi has that
Also there's so many damn names for that lol. I prefer NAT loopback
i mean i "have" it, but not if i want my gigabit speeds
Ah
'member the CTF convos we had over wine and spaghet? (sans the wine and spaghetti)
I hate to say it.... but I'm probably going to have to invest in another couple of routers.... I have Verizon Gigabit, with their 1100 Gateway.... but it doesn't support VLANs.... so all of my devices are on the same network. And that kills me.
sweats profusely
you can get an AC1700 on fleabay pretty cheap usually.. .flash with Tomato and you're golden
Flash with whaaaa.????
🍅
TLDR: what is the cost/benefit?
on the surface they all appear the same
not the literal $ cost
i think i got my ac1700 for $50 shipped
but what do you give up vs what do you gain by flashing tomato?
time sink was about 30 minutes as I ended up having to tftp flash the final firmware
give up nothing, gain a whole lot
it's literally just linux running a bunch of services at that point
Looks like that thing could boil water with its four antennas lol
if it had storage, i could run docker and HA on it
so you're essentially unlocking it.... or in terms I would be familiar with.... you're rooting and flashing your phone.... only its your router
right
i actually needed to because the UPnP on netgear routers is absolute garbage
one device could UPnP fine, but 2 and it was game over
UPnP 🤢
tomato fixed all my issues, and gave me better performance on traditional NAT
xbox baby
that one of the other things I would like to do is set up a NAS but the ExHDD I have doesn't have LAN so....
waity......
NAT?
Network Assigned....
ahhhhhhhh
Here's another route, albeit more.....PITA......
Take my existing 1100 gateway......
Use the existing physical ports to hook up separate routers, each with their own network.... kind of a physical VLAN setup.... would that work?
or am I wiping before I shit and still allowing access through the main gateway?
that could work sure
nothing wrong with that at all imo
i'm just a cheap bastard 🤣
In theory....
Router 1 - Smart devices
Router 2 - Home Computers
Router 3 - Security Cameras
All hooked up to the same 1100 Gateway....
Could someone gain access to Routers 1 & 2 if they hack one of the cameras on router 3, since all the routers still hook up to the same access point (1100 gateway)?
yeah you'd have NAT per router to your main gateway... you might be able to do mac filtering
I mean, I have MAC filtering right now on my 1100, but I've heard Mac spoofing is "so easy".....
it is
I've had to teach myself a lot of stuff in the past two months about networking, so I am always looking to those who know the ropes to learn from lol
If my questions come across as a challenge, I promise I'm not... I'm thinking of potential scenarios lol
you're fine
ty.... I've come across some really touchy users in the past, you ask a question and they think you're challenging their intellect.
My alternative to VLANs since my Verizon 1100 Gateway wont support VLANs (despite having it listed)
nerds have opinions they treat as fact
^^^^^^^
i'm guilty of it as well
unless all those devices happen to be within that range of that particular ap you don't do that lol
wired
ap?
wired?
Access Point
he's wanting to use considering using individual routers to isolate his networks
to the individual ports on the gateway
he can't do vlans
something like this, but not quite as convoluted.....
I get switches, using a single switch for multiple cameras ect
smart devices won't be all wired
same goes for typical local devices
so it's like trying to separate into catagories off 3 seperate devices dosen't really make much since.. switch is the exception for the cameras
*sense
right.... lets say this.....
I have a Verizon Gateway 1100 Router...
I hook up 3 Netgear Routers, via LAN, to said gateway, each one in theory has it's own wifi.
Whatever I hook into a specific Netgear (I hope) should be isolated from the other two Netgear Routers, despite all of them using the same MAIN router (Verizon)
If your main router/gateway serves the home with wifi ect, then everything goes through that.. everything else is just ap/switches/bridges
wifi dosen't like being close to other wifi even when you seperate out the channels
oooof
with an actual router setup even trying to mesh with a typcial router is frsutrating
Yeah, I found that out too..... I have a Netgear physically hooked into my Main router.... transmitting the same SSID and password
But it's not functioning as a true mesh
your better off just going normal, expand your network coverage only as needed, dump wired devices in clumps on a decent switch
because being connected to the one and moving around will still require dropping the signal and rehooking up to the closer one
and just let the main gateway deal with the dhcp aspect
is it bad that my automations are both in tasker and home assistant
My concern was all this hype of having your smart home devices hooked into the same network as your computers
Between computers, smarthome devices, bulbs, outlets, hubs, cameras, TVs, etc..... I have dozens of devices on the same network.
I'm concerned with that setup
slow networking can be an issue
the solution isn't to break it up, it's to change the devices
well, its both, get new devices and also split things up
BUT you can get easily over 100+ devices on the same network and the slow aspect comes from how much data those devices use at any gievn time which things like smart devices don't use much of
it's like a pipe
So far it hasnt been too bad.... Dual Wifi, 2/5GHz, plus Guest Wifi.... I have been replacing everything with Cat6 for higher speeds, and I have the Gigabit FiOS, so around 980 Mbps at the router.
Apologies, brb 5 min
you could even use qos or some crap to insure that everything else chokes before your netflix skips a beat
I think you are overcomplicating a simple matter lol
wired?
trying to turn is home into a commercial office building with 40 floors
Lmao
I've already stalled out with learning Python because I don't have a practical project in mind 😦
go fix a bunch of kodi bugs
googles
go make up a new addon for ha
@forest edge you dont want to see my network diagram
lol
@steel urchin how does fresh tomato compare to shibby
in all honesty to each thier own but in the end unless there is actual positive benefit it's just nuts lol
with radius mac VLAN assignment for wireless
ah see that makes more snese
well isn't shibby fork dead?
I have each vlan firewalled off
that would be the best comparison 😛
for what reason?
Sorry about the delay.... now I have to go catch up
for what reason? security
home lan can touch the rest of the lans
rest of the lans can only communicate via established or related connections
OMG.....
they can not talk to each other
I'm still on shibby
do you live in a hackers community?
I should get off it
@forest edge no?
Buttttt I really just want to build a pfsense box
@brisk glen I just saw your screenshot... I love you in a totally not-weird way.....
so why so much security?
that part dosen't make sense.. i get it if you seperate a local work vlan ect
if one IoT device gets infected
@hushed basalt i'm pretty sure you can just flash freshtomato, but you'll likely need to wipe the memory after
Like you said, I think it boils down to "each their own"...
Having the extra security in place is kind of like my view on guns....
I pray I'll never need it.... But the one time you need it and don't have it, you'll never need it again.
if someone is able to hack one, they can hack it all
is my point
for the majority the weak/strong point is the main gateway
I should IaC my router
not anything internally
But it would never be worth it
Most IoT devices nowadays allow you to set a unique password for each device to bolster security... however, not all.
Dahua, for example, has a bad track record of updating their firmware, and in many reported cases, their default passwords were well know.... Someone could literally sniff out a Dahua cam, and access the rest of the persons network since it was on the same SSID
if you have a neighbor taking advantage of your radius mac assigning then they are already further in your whole network then you would ever know
Thankfully I do not have anything from Dahua
yah... the security is worth it here
agreed
philips hue cant mine my data
I would rather have overkill and not need it
etc
parental controls stops that
plus, once you know what you are doing, its easy
and if you already have the gear..
I love how my gaming devices are on their own vlan with upnp
but I keep upnp disabled for the rest
supper easy to do with a unifi setup
Another example... My Samsung Color Laser printer.... I would buy the toner refill kits.... Samsung updated their chips to demand and require you replace them regardless of the fill, you could not reset the chips.... so the company providing the refill kits sent out replacement stickon chips.... Samsung in turn pushed an update to delegitimize the chips.... this went back and forth for months of cyber warfare before I said screw it and bought a new printer. In hindsight, I could simply block internet access to the printer while allowing LAN interaction with the computers on the network... but still
Yeah that's another good point.... I have a subscription to a....fk me I cant think of the name of it.... it hides your ip
@forest edge that's the thing though, I can't think of anything to add to forbidden topic
im burnt out
VPN
there it is
anyway
it severely slows my Gigabit connection....
well...
I could theoretically setup my one VLAN to run the VPN for my definitely-not-cracked FireTV, while keeping it off for my other devices that enjoy the higher speed.
mqtt and friends
you could make a discord bot for ha. it could follow you and post all the assive amounts of emoji's in your stead
why do you use a vpn?
I know you can setup a vpn on the FTV itself, but it is required to run in the background vs right at the VLAN
It was cheap, I signed up, and I'm stuck with it for 3 years lol.... I really dont even use it, but for things like the FireTV if you run Kodi or Terrarium or w/e the current build is to allow streaming from not-good video sources.... it hides your IP
ah
and I dont require Gigabit speeds to watch FireTV
yeah lol, I'm going to try to learn some python so I can start tinkering with RPi
no need
basic routing and a vpn
I saw one build with some arduino where the guy built a command through IFTTT (before the API was opened up for Alexa).... He would tell Alexa to start his car, which did not have said skill..... The command would route through IFTTT back to his RPi and arduino, where it would push the required keeys to start his car using an extra remote keyfob lol
Obnoxious and lazy yes
but a neat build
ew, must keep it all local except voice recognization
I must have all local push/polling
as soon as its remote, not buying or banned
I may have fears against having my stuff rely on other peoples servers
Here was another weird build but proof of concept..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaEPdXXkrRY
In this video we are going to use a Raspberry Pi as a Car Starter to start a Ford Edge. The Ford Edge already has a car starter built into it however the remote has a low range. To enhance it, we are going to connect the RPi to the internet and send it commands from an Ionic ...
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder from Azure cloud outages...
@steel urchin what the heck was that router thing you were posting earlier?
people trying to sell unused windows 10 keys on social media sites for 2-3 times the actual cost of obtaining them 🤢
wait this one says sold to @scenic radish
Windows 🤢
Actually I don't mind windows. I just think drive letters are stupid
And \ instead of / for file paths...
Whaaaaaaat is that? Kinda looks like USB dongles
Lux sensors.
Ahhhhhh! I want some lux sensors
Going to add about 8 with 60sec update interval for much more granular control.
Hmmm.... That's interesting, but for what effect? How can they be used? Lighting control perhaps?
They measure light level
Turning lights on around sunset is how I'd use them
Sometimes it's very cloudy and I'd like the lights to turn on earlier than sunset
Yeah okay, that's kinda what I was thinking
Actually that makes a lot of sense
Cloudy days equal lights on
@scenic radish I am trying not to use cloud coverage since the update interval for darksky is eh... I do have 3 that update at 60 sec but not enough
Well that's what I mean, that's where the lux sensors come in
did you make those? or what?
I currently just have a fixed -20 min offset
I really like that, local reliance vs online reliance... Mine would be considered online, some I have the lights change based on the forecasted conditions
Off between sunrise and sunset, unless not sunny
@forest edge made the outdoor ones already but want something cleaner and smaller for inside with some white PETG
those be perfect for rpi projects
I want some lol
downside they don't look too weather resistant hehe
That's not for outside. All the idling wall plates need some lux love
@tidal bronze I went with the bigger enclosure since it's a ESP32 and I'm relying on the BLE stuff
JUST opened the original image so i could actually see what it was, I see the usb tails with nothing connected I thought they were that small initially lol
Router thing?
I didn't want the radios crammed up on the transformer for the AC converter
Fresh Tomato?
you linked something about a tamato router
curious if it was like that ddwrt buffalo thing years back
@last dirge copy.
@tidal bronze crack that USB adapter open, drill a hole in it and run a cable out
they're both active projects
oh it's just firmware
I used to run tomato
No don't want to do that. Want to replace if needed
yeah, like ddwrt ... they're virtually interchangable
I thought it was a package thing like what buffalo did for ddwrt years ago
the company buffalo that makes routers partnered with ddwrt and actually released "official" ddwrt buffalo routers
oh, mmmm i don't think there is anything like that for tomato
was kind of a neat concept
I really thought the lux sensor was that usb tail and all when i first saw that image.. that would have been one sick little sensor hehe
alright going ack to watching the dark crystal on netflix, really hope this series doesn't turn out to be trash
yea I don't remember much of the original other than I liked it when i watched it as a kid lol
damn rust, why you so crashy?
how many times can i ssh back and forth between my pis... 🤔
Had to restart my NAS
Which means my HA is dead for like 15 minutes
I feel like our servers have high availability, considering how tightly integrated our homes are now
Correct me if I'm wrong.... but HA essentially works to tie together all of the different standards/platforms (SmartThings, Wemo, Wyze, etc) and make them all essentially work in harmony, via one platform (HA). That about sum it up in an over-simplified way?
You could say that
It's basically just an open source google home/smart things sort of platform
Ahh.... So kinda like IFTTT only local-based and better
that's actually how i describe it to people who aren't super familiar with tech
"like IFTTT on steroids"
I would describe the automations as "IFTTT on steroids," but HA itself I'd say a way of representing devices through abstractions (literally in software architecture we call them Entities).. the underlying implementations of obtaining access and control are along the lines of "making them work in harmony"
that's my ELI5 version though
I have barely used IFTTT
i've used it a lil to scan RSS and webhooks into discord for deal alerts
oh i asked yesterday but no answer so i'll try again... image dedupe software preference?
Louis CK visits his back doctor, who provides the most epic diagnosis and explanation.
what's your favorite office plot?
yeah
when Dwight wanted everyone to take the fire drill seriously so he caught the office on fire
how about yours?
probably the one where Michael loses his phone and gets lost and Holly is the Scott whisperer and finds him
oh yeah that was pretty good
so funny thing, i never watched TV until about 4 years ago
the party at Schrute farms that Andy tried to throw to impress his parents was a good one too
and i've crammed like crazy while working... friends, seinfeld, office, etc... all the classics
i was actually thinking of rewatching the series again
what in the IFTTT is going on in here
I have one season left for my first watch-through
i was actually pretty enthralled in it, it was way better than i thought it was going to be
the Jim/Dwight paradigm was a good hook for me
identity theft is a serious problem
hahaha
yes i was actually thinking specifically of that when i said that.. the halloween special
i love dissertation style videos about shows.... there was an interesting one about the progression of Michael Scott
ayyy 15 downloads in 4 days, not bad for pushing and forgetting https://hub.docker.com/r/nerdfoundry/rclonesync

damned windstorms in helsinki this morning 16 m/s
that's about 60 kmh (35mph) for those of you who don't parse metric
so a slight breeze.. sounds lovely
Windspeeds are normally rated in kmh though aren't they
I gots banned from serverbuilds.net lmao
in finland we use meters per second (m/s)
was a member of another server they dont like
the misfits server as they call it
but tbh I think I pushed them over the edge by posting some anti trump shit lol
but we are all banned now
@forest edge but miles per hour to meter per second isn't something I do in my head
@midnight adder i think your conversion is off though
My mental maths says 16m/s is just under 60km/h
@clear ferry expand your head then lol

Misfits server whiskerz?
Is that servers that aren't 8 year old enterprise 2u's that use 800w
not had coffee yet
half the staff and senior members left to create sudo.fail because of it
its mainly software based
Serverbuilds sounds like some neckbeard guys who will never work in any it job but KnOWs SerVers
script kiddies
@clear ferry yep
Ahckshually
And if they do work they're stuck in entry level sysadmin jobs for 20 years
wrote like one good guide in the last year with all that money
I dont think he has an IT job, I forgot what he does
And think they're soley responsible for any success in the $100m company
I think he's an ATC
I have a friend who started working in IT 15 years ago, he still only has helpdesk jobs, and only for a few months at a time because "they just don't understand me"
Now he's started as a twitch streamer
I need to get back on that corporate ladder
No idea what he streams, but he has like 5 followers
😂

Ain't nobody got time to watch other people play games
My nephew's did that from age 8 to 12
Just watched other people play
Not playing anything themselves

I've started watching people stream on discord
it can be fun as part of a community
did they longboard instead of playing games?
Then one of them declared themselves a geek and built a RGB computer, and the other said he was a retro guy and started collecting legacy consoles
RGB ew
im with you on that one mate
hassbot needs to be updated to accomidate us playing Tag
PONG!
no, go away
:(
Be nice to Tediore, he's sensitive.
well if he didn't play with it so much it wouldn't be..
Lmao
trying to cram 3 seperate holidays into one automation lol
15 days to takeoff
So i'm wondering where i can even start
do i just buy a plug of somesort?
and go from there
start?
what?
technically you don't need any of that to do automation type stuff with ha
and shocking there is alot of things people already own that ha can control
#OffTopic
does it really matter?
It's drizzling JUST enough that there's a steady drip inside the gutter downspout outside the bedroom window and it's driving me crazy
id kill for some rain
It's not even rain, just a mist building up and dripping....
ill take it
sorry nfg i'll zip up and move out in just a min
just shaking off the last little bit..
You might wanna go see a doctor with the duration of this drip
happens when you get old.. can't escape it
🚼
IS there an easy to use PCD design program, something that has a library of components like wemos and lolin boards, DHT sensors etc?
#diy-archived would likely be the best place to ask
👍
Hello guys
by any chance is there anyone using a digital bank? I have heard terrible things about Revolut so I do not want to use their services. Monzo and Starling seems to be quite good for what they are, yet it is just UK only
@boreal pewter thank you. do you consider it as a trustful company?
Yeah I do, my boss uses it as his main bank, it's just my 2nd
But I had a few k's laying around there tho
I only use free tier
thank you Anon for the detailed answer
do you know any other reputable alternatives by any chance?
or ever heard about Bunq?
What is the difference between that bank and any bank in Norway ?
I saw nothing on the front page I haven't gotten with any other bank the last 10-15 years
@past idol What things have you heard about Revolut? I've been using them for quite a few years now with no issues - so far anyway...
@clear ferry maybe the banks in Norway are more advanced ?
@wintry crow I am not sure whether they got a banking license or not
because they did not have one
but maybe they acquired one since
also I've read a lot of employee complaint
Hahah I find it hard to take the Verge seriously after that PC build video
this does not necessarily makes it problematic, yet it is not appealing either
that was the first one that came up, there are others if you search for it
Well, all I can say is I've had mine since 2015. Used it in USA, Norway, Egypt, and a bunch of European countries with no issues - again, so far
The bank I had when living in Ireland in 2007 felt like a Norwegian bank in 1997 atleast
Not sure about other countries
Am looking at N26 just now, and it doesn't seem to mention exchange rates. That's why I got the Revolut card, it uses the banks own exchange rate so I get more cash for my cash. That means more cocktails!
maybe I will try them out if I fail to find other alternatives
Yeah, I think the Norwegian banks does that by default
Hmmm will look into it more later
And I have had no transaction fees when paying or withdrawing money abroad for atleast 15 years
In the UK we get shafted by traditional banks for exchange rates, WAY above usual
But at least withdrawal fees are usually low-ish abroad
I can even pull money in the bank app from one account to another
my wife can't do that with her bank though
And since I have my retirement fund there I get extra low rates on loans and insurance
Nice
So my $230k loan has been at 1.99% interest the last 5 years, now it has upped to 2.29% I think
@wintry crow if you live in the UK, there is Monzo and Starling
Oh I'd heard of Monzo but never looked into it. They seem decent
Just reminds me of the vauxhall Monza when I hear the name
😂
No wait
That was the vauxhall manta
Ohhh the Opel Manta, I remember those, just
😄
They were nice cars tbh lol
sadly Monzo and Starling are UK only
yet just now I found a company named Bunq too
will look further into it
Monzo seems to do the exchange transparently on demand. I like Revolut that I can keep it in whatever currency I like, then use the app to convert. So I know exactly how many Euros/whatever I have to spend
Two weeks of all meals and drinks paid incoming
by the way do you think getting a custom domain for my email provider is a good idea?
I mean I just thought it is harder to get all the data that way, or to force hack into it as they do not know the provider, or at least it takes time to figure out
I should do some recycling soon
Do you not have recycling collection at home?
Open IIS manager, select the server, then click on "Application pools", find the application want to recycle, right-click on it and select "Recycle" from the menu
@ocean mirage no, not for pet and aluminium, we return them and get money back
ah I see
0.11 to 0.45 USD per
Kolonial comes and collects all of mine
Close enough 🤢
thats good money
not really
people get like 5 or 10c AUD here
You pay that in the first place, it's like a mail-in rebate
Hello everyone! I'm new here. Started messing around with home automation with some power plugs and wall units and googled my way to home assistant. (currently just doing stuff with google home on my phone)
LAME!
Not like Ireland where everything just went into the same bin
Home party, is that like an alternative?

You can certaly create a "partymode" automation/script/scene
Untz untz
I think my days of HASS might be numbered, I have reached a conclusion with my SO that IoT, automation and voice assistants will need to be removed from house. The garage can have some limited automations though :/ , started removing the zigbee switches this afternoon.
I pushed the bounds too far it seems, always pays to respect the values of those who are not as tech savvy or inclined to it. I always saw this project as magic that allowed cool things to occur, but sometimes good things must come to an end.
Sad to hear. But it should always be function first
@orchid rose Always functional i.e. switches work as normal switches (with added zigbee functionality), its more a fear of technology and not wanting the house to be controllable or automated. I understand this.
The internet went down at the same time as the ISP was doing some maintenance and this didn't help. But now focused on what the garage can do, not sure how I can use my ring doorbell, kettles, switches etc. but maybe can create something :/
well i will be doing absoulty nothing at work today.. except watching Deep Space 9
nice
best way to spend a Friday
My wife is getting a crash course in my whole docker and iot setup next week
Because I'm going abroad for two weeks
that should be interesting.
Anyone here have their networks segmented (VLANs, Subnets, etc)?
@unkempt bronze yep
What does it looks like as far as VLANs go? Want to start on my network but have a few questions...
How many VLANs? How many SSIDs? Do hidden SSIDs hinder performance?
I have 10, as many as you like broadcasting SSIDs has no impact on performance from same AP, no.
@clear mirage should be easy, she already knows esxi, bash and Linux 😛
@clear ferry well off to good start then. but murphys law is bound to rear its had though 😉
Aye, we should be fine, but since there will be a 7h time difference it might be impractical to restart something 😛
lol thats a bit of a time difference.
Indeed
Aye
@past idol i only know boon which I wanted to try if I feel for it. Unless my current Bank doesn't require fees from the first € on, they currently only Charge if you hoard 250k€+, I wont change that anyway. And N26 has a good state yet tho. I only use it for the Credit card yet.
But I just saw that you cant share spaces without a paid subscription, I guess none of the others even offer that at all
@clear ferry you are a vmware-geek are you not? Have you tried to run vmware as hypervisor on a day-to-day computer and a NAS os like unraid etc as a host as well as a windows host with graphics passthrough (to be used as a regular machine). I see some use unraid and use vm from there, but not sure if it could be clever to run it the opposite way if vmware handle vm better than for example unraid
VMware esxi is a bare metal hypervisor
Do you still mean to do that?
If so many enterprise customers run esxi as the bases, then run vdis on top, that share graphics cards
Like the Nvidia grid cards
Depending on the frame buffer up to 16 vms is usual
yeah I see its two kinda of setups - some install for example unraid on bare metal and run a vm with graphics passthrough for gaming machine over a nas, and some run vmware on bare metal a nas vm, a windows vm with nvidia passthrough. Not sure if vmware woudl handle passthrough of devices like usb, graphics, memory management etc better than unraid
We see no or little performance loss on esxi
VMware > unraid
It's an enterprise product
But you will need licensing for GPU passthrough
so to run a full 1080ti passthrough we talk a lot of $$$
To run any passthrough
That's how @clear ferry still have a job, those liceses are not cheap
I don't sell licences, I just implement cool shit
I only cost $200 per hour, plus tax, and extras
UnRaid is fine for use with day to day vm
Lada is a fine for everyday driving
yeah im running unraid today with a gaming vm passthrough, but always open for alternatives
TBH unless you actually need to be paying someone like @clear ferry then you don't need to be using esxi lol...
robots are trying to take your jorbs atx
Unless you need 16 consecutive users with full 1080p or 4k passthrough you probably don't need esxi for GPU passthrough 🙊
We usually have 4-8 users per card though, and 256-512gb ram each
People like atxbyea are keeping my unraid plentiful with upgrades the more he tells people to upgrade their gear the more 2.5" nvme drives I can snap up 🙂
but then you are thinking about vgpu?
I'm scared to touch used drives
Grid and similar cards are presented as vgpus yes @late gate
But they have a physical dedicated backing
Depending on the profile
Nobody does that in enterprise, so never seen it
The users that need that have dedicated servers with multiple cards
6.4TB NVME U.2 Intel Enterprise drives... COME AT ME. 3.2GB/s read, 2.1GB/s write, 58.4 PBW endurance
Lol, better get those 15.4TB or 30.8TB ones 😛
Like I said Aleks, you dont need esxi unless you are setting up full on enterprise servers. UnRaid VM is more than capable of home use.
the "ruler" 32TB Intel drives haha
You actually got that drive robot?
@ocean mirage Na I went to buy and one of the other guys got the whole 6 that were left... some thing like $3,600 USD
Need some update on wifi tech, is MIMO meaningful for home use? 30 wifi endpoint max
Afya just get a Unifi unit. more than good enough and easy to use
@fallow galleon mimo is 10+ years old already, you don't need a refresher, you need a reboot 😛
Just get a newer model. Tech you know should be a simple in and out. Will keep all your current settings etc since you have a controller running.
Whiskerz almost finished everything now. Super Quiet PSU on the way. 10gb networking, Soon as I sell my spare servers and there 120tb of storage I will be able to get another 6 or so 8tb and two of the 3.2tb nvme drives. Then all go. xeon v4 with 128gb ddr4 for unraid and the 1950x with 128gb for plex
What you using the nvmes for
here my wallet is already hurting with 2 shuck WD
Cache drives. Then I can pull the 4x 1tb ssd I have and create an unassigned raid
Downloads
linux iso?
Afya I think I am at 8 now.. (on top of my non shucked lol) UnRaid
That’s legit
hmm, I should get a cache drive too
Also got some 12gbs back planes so I can make use of my 8TB enterprise drives I use as parity.
what the hell are you doing to where you need that throughput?
Oh also robot, you might find it amusing to know there was a small ban streak on serverbuilds
If you missed it
I’m outta there
What did you do lol
Do you remember when half the mods left the server?
You might not have noticed
A while back
They made their own server and anyone on that server got banned from SB
Lol
