Lmao
My router has done stupid shit before
Unhappy meal
Like flipping its shit when I tried assigning a previous DHCP reservation to a different device
After changing the previous device's IP
That sounds like a bad domestic situation
Ick. I built a pfSense box for $400, would NEVER go back to a consumer router.
All things considered, I'm still a fairly big proponent of a good Ubiquiti setup
I was able to clear the ARP table through some backwards-ass way which fixed it
Yeah I use 2 UniFi AP AC Pro for WiFi - it's simply amazing.
But apparently Ubiquiti is the root cause of all my MQTT issues...
I've got quite an extensive home network setup ๐
I'm surrounded by linksys cause i got them cheap lol
Maybe I really should get an edgerouter x...
you all havve richer taste lol
Linksys in bridge mode are fine too, they just act as dumb APs
WAN port to switch on the right VLAN, acts the same as a UniFi (just not as fancy) ๐
mos of mine are either running ddwrt or tamato
Nothing that runs ddwrt or tomato can NAT fast enough for me
like i said, cheap lol
pretty flexible
I bought two cheap 1200's off ebay for 15 bucks and flashed them both with ddwrt and now they ap for a good portion of a house + barn and been doing it without issue for 3 years lol
I haven't seen a ddwrt or tomato router yet that does much more than 300Mbit
I live in a small flat at monent so APs not necessary but more for the VPN side of it.
oh yea you can do that, run openvpn directly off the router lol
@raven ember my AC1700 gets me my max speed, ~980mbit
you need to look into CTF
without it, you won't get NAT'd gigabit speeds
I turn that off
locally you will, but not NAT
that's what my pfSense does for my primary location but that sounds interesting for access to parents' network remotely. I'm using a Pi for that too, but VPN on the router itself might be a better solution.
you can ask them to enable the ethernet port on their ONT and they usually will
ATT politely told me to "eff off" when i asked
Yeah it involved enabling that and a 120 dollar adaptor for the cable
and then the router.
oh, you have their tv service. that does make it harder
Yeah...The Mom Approval Factor of No TV would um...Negative Numbers.
i only used internet from them
Ouch. My local bell ran fiber into house (fttn) and terminated it at an ethernet jack in my basement. The installer even mounted it all on my networking panel.
if they offered legit bridging it wouldn't be an issue
so I've felt a bit stuck with my current Router/Modem/Switch thingamabob
router woes
my biggest issue with CTF is you don't get NAT loopback
but, i can't go down to ~300mbit when i'm paying for gigabit
plus... it's so awesome to get those speeds
all it does is supposedly check the "important" bits of a packet while ignoring the rest of it to free up router headroom. at least that's how i understood it
but can cause issues too
like i think it was causing me presence detection issues lol
i tried to do some dnsmasq stuff, but it's mucking things up for me as well
trying to forward mydomain.com to my internal ip fixes dns lookups, but nginx sees the request coming FROM the router, so the response never makes it back to the client
Need NAT hairpinning
scroll up ๐
NAT loopback is hairpinning
I traded off for a split DNS
internal requests resolve to the internal IP addresses; externally, things are just port forwarded and everything is happy
HA
yeah i made that word up
I think the only concern i ever seen over ctf was the security aspect but have yet to see a single inatnce of it being exploited
so other than the issues it causes with like certian things needing the router to read the whole packet, it's user pref of to use it or not, it does help alot with it on if you need the full throughput
I'm stuck with non gigabit speeds through my isp so it impacts me in no way speed wise lol
and the tumors it brings.. not me!
Do not deny the Green Glow of Progress
Up...Hol up. My 5G stopped working because I'm standing near a tree.
I feel bad for thos eoffice workers who have that antenna piped in and the one guy who has to sit within firect line of site of the repeater lol
*direct
I've heard that Gigabit 5G is finicky as a child who dark coffee strapped into a carseat
if bob grows up nevver having children of his own, you know why...
"But radio doesn't cause cancer", scientists say.
Wrong part of the street? 4G
Window? 4G
In a building? 4G
Existing? 4G
QPSK/QAM is NOT good for throughput or stability.. i'm surprised we're still on it
my rgbcw bulbs came with a free thing for an extra bulb and this one extra bulb keeps dropping from my wifi even when the light is not in use (on but off) and it's driving me nuts
Aw man. I'm existing
guess i got what i paid for
I've got a wifi bulb or two
have you checked the signal strength in that spot? good ol wifi anal-izer
I've just got a four-pack of LIFX bulbs at the moment. They work fine.
anal-izer
Hah.
these are amazon finest whatsthenameagain
๐
Amazon Basics ? Yeaaa.... China's Best.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer good lil app... helped me find a rogue AP once in the office
Ahh. I like Net Analyzer - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.techet.netanalyzerlite.an&hl=en_US .
Can I ask y'all a dumb question
we I prefer it
If only Amazon's shit could be tuya-converted
Yay.
I been using wifi analyzer since it came out on my galaxy s2 lol
If I get like 20 Wifi Bubs. Can I like Congest or overload my Wee-Fee from them talking to the router all the time.
Yes, but the odds are low
It certainly isn't ideal
Anyone know of an alarm clock that can be remotely turned off?
20 might be ok, 50 might do it
Can I just say Home Assistant's climate/generic_thermostat integration is freaking awesome
Thanks y'all
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I guess I'm gonna have to bite the Z-wave Bullet
Just got a zigbee temperature sensor and set it up
FORBIDDEN TOPIC
LOL yes
welcome to the club!
@hidden cradle smart plug can remotely turn it off lol
i spent $500 on zwave switches lol
My only Z-wave Device is a door sensor at the moment
people are so dramatic at OMG You use the WiFis? That's bad!!!
What about the battery and setting the time again?
No need
smart plug isn't that smart, sdorry
Make your own time
I frequent /r/homeautomation on Reddit and it annoys the heck out of me
I flash all my Tuya stuff
I was looking at Lenovo smart clock but wow it's expensive
I don't think that can be remotely controled either
I bought some tuya plugs, then bought some tasmota compatible ones and returned the tuya ones
I was looking at a google home hub today
No regrets
but I was like "That'd be dumb to lock myself into Google's Ecosystem
I should get a cheap android tablet and Home Assistant It
Home Hub is neat
that lenovo smart clock was 40 bucks on black friday
Tuya, for the most part, should all be using esp8266 esp8265 esp32 etc. the things i've seen, so far, have all been able to be flashed with pins or OTA out of the box.
I sometimes wake up before alarm, get to work and go oh... Did I shut the alarm off?
I run Google Assistant SDK on the same Pi that I run Home Assistant and Phoscon on
Neat.
It works extremely well with home assistant, not gonna lie
It's the only cloud-based thing I use
One of these days I need to make a Home Automation tinkering plan
Fucking reeeeeeeeeeeeee
i'm literally crippled by HA right now
Aw shi-
gets sent to the Shadow Realm
Home Automation is like the adult version of Lego. How can I take all this stuff apart, and put it back together in different ways?
there's too many options, and the docs don't really give much guidance unless you want to install on RPi
Usually end up driving back to apartment to find out I did in fact shut it off โน๏ธ
like... i'm trying to decide if i want to go all in on node-red or native automations
Sometimes I feel like I'm looking at a mall directory with 10,000 stores on it
Some regular clocks have a timeout for the alarm
my brain wants node-red, my heart wants native
I still need to look into node red
Mine does
and I'm like "Oh lawd I have no idea what I'm doing or even want to do"
So far it's all native for me
native has the talk to automate thingie now, you can be super lazy
HA automate my toliet seat
automate my toilet seat
I mean you could. With the right stepper motor and gear box, I'd totally see someone doing that.
IMO talk about home assistant in this channel should be ok as long as it's not asking for support
"Hey Autovoice Ask Alexa to Flush my toilet"
thank you for your approval
Yeah there's no other non-support general home asisstant channel in here that I can see
oh we're asking for support.. head shrink type support
"Alexa, start the shower"
"Okay!"
"And set the water temperature to 95 degrees"
"Okay!"
Oh man do I need a head shrink
I want to be able to say "hey google, draw a bath"
lol someone posted that Moen U yesterday, i hadn't rolled my eyes so hard in a long time
but hey.... you do you, boo
My instruction manual got lost in the mail
download the pdf
btw my deal bot told me 10TB WD shucc drives are on sale on amazon
hmm time for belated lunch then on to work, be back later gents
good day, sir ๐ฉ
"Alexa, turn up the heat."
"I'm having trouble communicating."
house explodes
"Google Home can you read my texts?"
"I'm sorry I can't read Texts?"

What's the point of a robot slave when it can't listen right >_<
Last 2 tuya converts for 2019 ๐ @quaint osprey works with same template as the 20w one
Nice.
@tidal bronze good deal!
digiblur I made a firmware you might be interested if you end up accidentally flashing your devices to a firmware and wanting to revert
I use your digiDIM and accidentally flashed Tasmota 7.2 and couldn't go back
Had to make a bin that was version 255.255.255.255 and minimum version 0.0.0.0
@tidal bronze Which models are those, if you excuse my ignorance
15W no external antenna. So glad didn't go with 20w. These are so BRIGHT! 2 x 20W would've been too much for the fountain ๐
Very nice. I'm just starting to play the Tuya Convert game myself
The echo dot with clock is out of stock everywhere hmmmm
@tidal bronze dimmable?
Yep
Amazing.
Throw a couple of them on a servo controlled platform and have yourself some motion activated, directional flood lights ๐
2 days did close to 26 tuya converts.
@quaint osprey thank you for all the tips, guides and links. Appreciate it very much
I've just been doing Merkury CT BR30's and LOHAS CT A19's
Are those out door tuya lights?
yes
My mom has been wanting to light the house up like fort knox. She may be interested.
yeah, Kind of pricy for my budget. The Merkury BR30's plug into my existing ceiling cans at about 1/3 that price
Compared to the zemismart downlights
I was planning to take the BR30 route but this diffuser is next level
What was the model/brand name of those lights?
So... broader light angle?
Yes. Footprint is broad so can color mix front and back down lights
Thank you quad
Tuya Convert is pretty addictive!
@brave panther should be updating digiDIM to 8.x soon.
I should get some more plugs and flash them before all the ESP plugs disappear from amazon
My wife's gonna kill me
@quaint osprey Awesome. I just did that and built and used the minimal to intermediately flash it to something so i could re-flash digiDIM.
@quaint osprey it really is addictive. Still amazes me how vtrust figured it out lol
Yeah
Still... near $40/ea is pretty ouch
I want a robot vacuum so bad but money
I just got a Roborock S5 for $360 ($140 off) right before Christmas
I try to keep a list of things that flash fine with Tuya Convert and such on my Amazon page but not sure of I can share that stuff here.
I have 32 cans in the house
That's the one I was looking at
Funny, using a tuya converted switch to run the on-off-on-off-on as well ๐
Everyone on Home Assistant subreddit says buy Roborock S5
1,280 dollarys
How does the path mapping stuff work?
Does it explore and then build a visual floor plan?
@quaint osprey maybe ask the mods first. Self-promotion is against the rules here and it might fall under that
Been using the s5 for a long time. Love it. Just got the S6 as well.
Or do you have to give room measurements?
lidar, it "sees" the walls and draws them in the app then you re-create things in floor plan
Ah sick
But I'm just a lowly purple ๐
I want one even more now ugh
Yep.. People can google just fine if they dare. Lol.
"if they dare" lol
@quaint osprey You could always share it with Blakadder
Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.flole.xiaomi&hl=en_US to get the map zones. Click -and-go
I love this
- my room is not 23C
hisses
I should customise my dashboard more but eh
Almost all my applications are dark theme, it's nice to have a change
C? screeches in imperial
Don't talk to me about fahrenheit
FWIW I would love to get better at metric and whatnot.
It gets easier the more I try.
Yeah Fahrenheit is honestly better for "day to day" stuff
but mathematically/scientifically I agree it's superior.
1000kcal to raise 1000mL of water 1ยฐC
How much maintenance does roborock s5 require?
I imagine it fills up pretty quickly?
Where does the dirt even go lol
@woeful roost the bin is a bit small for my liking but otherwise, just getting the crap out of the bristles is the only thing I've had to do so far
delete
Like snake venom ๐
"how do I delete someone else's comment"
How often do you need to empty it?
I can't get a robot suck machine
@woeful roost It could hold about 2 handfuls of Cheerios I guess, maybe 3, but it's enough for the area I'm using it in
@scenic radish you cant
I have a dog that's not perfectly trained to not use the house as it's bathroom
Remember when you could find out someones IP with IRC
Handfuls of cheerios is an SI unit
I was using IRC until a few months ago
So many script kiddies
then we moved to Discord
Right now, new carpet in basement, it's shedding badly. Have to empty it each cleaning, if not twice. Generally I'd say probably best to empty it after each cleaning. Just to be sure.
@scenic radish but i can/did
Could always ICQ...
Me: What's your username?
Bro: 9123217162
Vasiley out here flexin his mod abilities
I have a Neato and it needs an empty every cycle
Does it actually save that much effort compared to vacuuming manually? ๐ค
Asking as someone who very much does not like vacuuming
They're great though..robot vacs in general
I will still have to vacuum the bathroom manually because cat litter... which I don't really want in the robot
I think you can use HA to target zones
Yep
What about a robot for...other needs. Any suggestions?
So I would do say, entry hall and kitchen/eating area every day
@scenic radish Home Blondimation
Alexa: Tediore, I see you've been lonely lately. Do you need help with that?
And whole house every 3 days
Sadly Robot Hand Holding Technology is still in it's infancy
the last test subject lost his hand
They also get under furniture you can't with an upright
Do you have carpet Haystack
Oh so you WANT your viewing history to be made accessible to the internet.
Next I need something that will clean the sink and toilet for me too
@hushed basalt yes
Careful Tediore [FORBIDDEN TOPIC] Will get jealous at you two timing it
Even the bathroom is carpeted (๐ )
Omg that's forbidden
Yeah you "should" be vacuuming every day
Dumbest idea
Oh fuck no
ewwww mold...
Burn it with fire
Yeah time for a new place
I have some black mold in my mom's room
Yep there's mold next to the bath because the shower screen sucks
I'll grab my lighter...
๐คข
burn the whole house. only way to be sure.
Are you renting
It's a rented apartment
Nuke it from orbit
The other residents might not enjoy that
Localised Nuke
only for a second
You posted a warning on your face book page 30 Earth Days prior. They have no reason to complain.
Discord is so fucking distracting when I'm trying to get other shit done. Peace bois
Yeah it is lol
See ya @scenic radish
I just use the web client and mute the tab. Haven't found a need for thick client yet.
What is best / cheapest smart colour light bulb to buy now days? I hear lifx thrown around a lot.
LIFX definitely not the cheapest.
Best / cheapest ๐คฃ
Get Phillips Hue
Digiblur did a comparison. One sec.
Best value perhaps?
I don't want to comprise quality :P
Best / cheapest
I'd just answer with the cheapest zigbee colour bulb
at 1% of a college tuition it's very cheap

God Bless people who make comparisons
Tradfri are decent price/quality ratio
๐ฒ Best.
๐ฒ Cheapest.
Choose one.
I've found tuya stuff to be a bit ew
The tripod
Hue bulbs are great value if you get the plain white ones, but the RGB ones are really not cheap
TBH RGB Bulbs feel like a gimmick to me
^
"I can make my lights RED! Wooooo!"
You take that back
Hue white bulbs are the perfect colour/temperature
๐
Doesn't feel lacking at all to me
RGB Bulbs are a GIMMICK badtecotech
Also getting a "normal" colour on some RGB bulbs (at least cheapo ones that my friends have) is actually a pain lol
they are not a gimmick they are amazing lalalalalalalalalala
You wouldn't like my room
Hue are great as they use Zigbee I believe, keeps things off your WiFis if that's your thing. But hub limited to ~50 per hub if I remember correctly.
LIFX are brightest and the most color accurate. 1100 lumens is amazing.
But honestly if you want to light up your whole house with RGBs, that's gonna be very expensive if you want it done right. So be prepared to spend some cash.
It's mixed color temp
I've got three blinding white blubs on one side and one "daylight" bulb on the other side
@brave panther yeah they use zigbee
I use the Conbee II instead of Hue Bridge
Works perfectly
Very good
Hue Ambience should be good general bulbs if you can get the right price
You shouldn't really have 50 smart bulbs in your house anyway lol
If you have that many bulbs just buy a zigbee dimmer switch instead
When you add them all up, I'm sure people do.
Hah true. But some want red drop lights so.. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I've been looking at bulbes because for my HA history. No Nuetral switcehs have been a lost cause
apart from Lutron
I have a few MiLight's outside. mostly so I can do dumb things like say "if decemeber make red/green"
Can you just put a shelly in the roof
To be honest thinking about it now i probably don't need colour bulbs, i will eventually get some light strips installed at some point for that ๐คท
A shelly on the roof?
And use the active just as a switch to the exisiting wire
@proper swift okay that's an acceptable use and is pretty cool
I aint gonna go crawling in my attic XD
Shelley? Shelly? Shelllyyyy
Last time we did that my dad's leg fell through the ceiling
F

So much chaos, thanks for all info. I'll do some googling now I got some names / terms in my head.
C-c-c-c-c-ombo breaker
also Apparently we are going to sell this house and move out (soon TM)
so that kind of project feels ill advised
Then don't buy Any more bulbs either :D
ick yea... would be a shame to do all that and move, and have to re-install what was there before
but but but
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Personal-Wireless-Lighting-Bayonet/dp/B0748MDYJN
I get these bulbs and they're great
Just put switches in your new house
I plan to take all my smart stuff with me
Yeah do
As I am not playing "How the fuck do I Home Assistant" over the phone LMAO
Yeah exactly
No one's gonna know what to do with our kinda stuff lmao
Only thing I wouldn't remove is network cables from the walls probably because that's effort to remove
And it's pretty cheap really.
And anyone can work that out tbh
screams in 1956
It's like 50 years old
Same.
I don't know anyone else in the UK who has network cables in the walls
I get the Jealous when I see people talking about building a new house with Cable Drops everywhere and such.
I think outside of the technically inclined, 80% of people don't care to have everything plugged in. Most just concede with WiFi on their laptop/phone/tablet/TV.
@woeful roost what's wrong with 50 plus of anything ? ๐ I run ESP, zigbee, zwave and zwave plus.
Why do things gotta cost MONEY
Hah it's not wrong I just think if someone bought 50+ smart bulbs it likely is not the most efficient solution
Because you can get zigbee dimmer switches like the one I linked a minute ago
How else can they alert intruders with red light?
And shower in blue?
And be green with envy!
I need network cable runs so I can setup TensorFlow using Defense turrets
Just put a long light strip in your gutter
There is no right or wrong with these things. I guess comes down the cost and implementation.

Yeah exactly

Automated, target tracking, hands-free sentry gun!
This video is old! click my name to see newer videos of this system.
If you want party mode with all your bulbs changing colours independently
Something like this.
Then yeah you'd probably need a ton of smart bulbs
Speaking of smart tech.
Oh wait no this would be dumb tech
They make a Huge Enter Button that you can SLAM your fist down upon
Sounds like a good idea for us
@brave panther dude holy macaroni that thing is scary
Makes it that much more enticing!
@valid halo I saw that lol
Man I need a sentry gun in my life
That's the coolest thing I've seen in a while and it comes in its own portable briefcase
My dream of playing real life team fortress will soon come to be
Between this and Elon Musk's flamethrower
You could have your Mycroft Pi Ask the Mailman a passcode to avoid being shot with bright orange paint balls

Yeah shame this kinda thing would be totally illegal here
Same. There's laws against "booby traps" here in the states.
HMMM.
Dang
it would have been funny
"Robber gets shrekt by Home Assistant Sentry Guns"
But if you did something that ACTED like it was gonna shoot them, that'd be different I think. The fear of shooting them is not the same as shooting them. IANAL, YMMV.
So just shoot very close to them

Anywho I'm gonna go mess with my new 3d printer, courtesy of Mr. Claus himself. Have a couple mods to do, now that the prints just got done. ๐
Ender 3 Pro. What a bro.
@brave panther lol
a 3d printer is an infinitely deep hole. worse than home automation
Could just 3d print a 3d printer. Like how you can pretty much make a lathe using a lathe.
yeah the assembly was a lot like a Lego kit
then, you mod it. takes more time modding it than it did assembling.
They have metallic 3D print now
He replaced some plastic parts with metal I think
3D Print a Car.
same.
And made things more stable
Is there like a kit for modding it?
Or are they just really basic common parts like nuts and bolts
Nah, just lots of small mods.
- Silent motherboard with upgraded motor drivers (no motor whining, high pitched screeching is terrible)
- All metal hot end (filament doesn't get bunched up since the hot end is all metal and there's no gap for filament to melt into)
- Metal extruder (filament doesn't slip since metal doesn't flex like plastic does)
- Better PTFE tube (filament doesn't get bunched up or stick against the tubing)
- BLTouch self-leveler (no need to manually adjust the bed level, for the most part)
- 3d printed tool holder, drawers, cable management (just little improvements)
the individual mods do come in kits tho
I've seen some really cool 3D printed Raspberry Pi blade chassis on r/homelab
In general though, not sure what I'd use a 3D printer for
@woeful roost I had a friend print one of those 2U 15 Ras Pi blade mounts but honestly it was too many so I will eventually end up re-printing one myself for perhaps 6-8 instead.
did you get the skr mainboard?
I have at least 4 Pis in the house right now
15 is too many for me lol
My R210 II handles all my needs fine anyway
Have two R710s X5690 (12 core, 24 thread @ 3.4GHz) 144GB / 160GB RAM, it's definitely overkill.
lmao that's a lot of power
Jaysus
I haven't even checked what my R210 II draws
Yea. Around 230W each idle running no VMs (ESXi 6.7)
thats a lot of idle
running VMs, not a lot more. but the heat is definitely a concern for most.
I like the switch I got, it's a zyxel 24 port fanless managed switch and I got it for ยฃ35 (retail price is like ยฃ90)
Fanless managed switches are a rare breed
Ill check my server power draw when I get a UPS
What hypervisor do you use @brave panther
@ocean mirage The mods I did are:
- Silent motherboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TYFJ924
- BLTouch auto-leveler: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FR2LLZP
- BLTouch pin 27 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QKJ7T1V
- All-metal hotend: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0789V2D7C
- Metal extruder: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B96QMN2
@woeful roost I use ESXi 6.7
but honestly I might downgrade in the future as it's a lot of power for the ~15 VMs I run right now
Yeah I am considering that
Only 15? ๐ฐ
Ahh cool, thanks for the list
Yeah I moved a lot off onto its own hardware the last year so there's less to do virtually.
I just bought a different motherboard myself similar reasons
I can definitely recommend Proxmox
also makes it easy for BLtouch to be added and no need to flash a bootloader to update firmware
Right
I am gonna hold off on hotend/extruder upgrades for a while, feel like I need to live with it for a while
but I would go the hemera when I do, pricey though
like 70% or more what I paid for the printer lol
Yeah the little "missing spots" go away when your extruder and hotend are able to pull filament without nags
I need to upgrade my servers, I'm running like 20+ VM's and need to bring up another 10 or so.. sugh..
I've been getting decent results as is really, I am happy with it for now
gonna order a capricorn PTFE tube tho, that will be useful in the mean time
My next homelab upgrades are gonna be:
- Bigger SSD for VMs
- Extra 16GB of memory to max it out
- UPS
- Maybe upgrade from E3-1220v2 to E3-1240v2
Actually maybe UPS should be #2
Yeah I really need to get a UPS but that is boring money spent
Yeah it kinda is
Power went out for the first time this year the other day tho
yup. the big reason you want a full metal hotend is the PTFE tube on the stock one doesn't come all the way to the nozzle and even if you can get it there by adjusting it, over time it'll come loose and create a pocket where molten filament can gather and gob up your nozzle
I should be more worried about me accidentally flipping the wrong switch than actual powercuts lmao
I did it a few weeks ago
The feeling of dread when I hear the room go quiet
Yeah, gonna keep my eye on that one Roo, if I see issues ill know what to check
and extruder wise there's just flex in the plastic. that's more of an issue than the nozzle starting out, but both in the long run.
ill just wait and get the hemera for my birthday or something lol
๐
It's a bit odd when people ask.
"What you want for your birthday?"
"BLTouch"
"Err, what's that?"
I really badly need to build a PC because my laptop is garbage, but any time I have some spare cash I end up spending it on either my homelab or home automation
I just made an Amazon list. haha
I bought some better springs for the bed for cheap, see if they hold it in place better. happy with manual levelling for now
Addiction is a bitch
๐ญ
Amazon lists and ebay watch lists are what I use to gather things and then prioritise them
Amazon lets you set priorities for items which is helpful
I only really use Amazon when I have to, its not the best experience for those living in Australia
K I'm back
Nice food
Head back again you forgot the flavour
:(
Yeah squirt some ketchup
Just having a go :) as long as you like it
Grilled chicken seasoned with olive oil and garlic herb seasoning
Prolly add some soy sauce to the rice
I've had pizza every day for the last week
I didn't burn the shit out of the chicken on the grill this time
This is what happens to me when my wife's on holiday
Turns out you don't need the grill at 100% all the time
There's not a lot I dislike more than cooking
what? 100% cooks it faster tho
I don't mind it
Home Asisstant integration for cooking please
Might be faster but you risk burning the outside while leaving the inside undercooked
100% is good for steak, not so much for chicken
Just use a bunsen burner
๐คข
lmao
Can anyone recommend a cheap ass wireless camera for home assistant
I can tell you don't buy Wyze
rip
I couldn't really find anything by searching on amazon
What's ass wireless?
A camera you attach to your butt
2.4GHz
when you have shitty connection
its a back up camera for your self
The first question is: does it really have to be wireless?
Well I'm not stretching a cable from my rack to the kitchen window
@valid halo I've personally had no issues but it depends on distance, how many - and what type of - walls are in between, and the lowest denominator technology.
Oh so it's the wireless connection itself which is the problem?
Wyze have other problems lately too
Wasn't there a supposed data breach
I saw that the other day
Mhmm
Yeah that
they logged everyone out, to be safe
Can you not use them local-only?
Its also much easier to power cameras if they arent wireless, just do some PoE
Ugh I wish I could hey google preheat the oven
I'd just run some ethernet through the attic if you can
I don't have a PoE switch ๐ฆ
Yeah I PoE my 6 Reolink cams
My biggest hurdle for Wired cams Is I don't want to drill holes in my walls
Hay they are not that expensive but I don't know your budget so that's relative
Also attic is a no, rented apartment
Ah that's fair @valid halo
I do actually have loft access, but I can't make any holes
I don't want to break something XD
If you break it, you can fix it. How else was your house put together to begin with? ๐
@brave panther I ideally wanted to spend less than ยฃ50 for the whole camera setup lol
Gotcha. So Wyze and get a wifi repater? I don't know a lot about the current repeater technology but possibly something to look at.
How else was your house put together to begin with?
By a builder (I am not one) lol
Or powerline adapters to add an additional network connection somewhere.
Yeah I have a powerline Ethernet set, they work pretty well
I'm only using it to place my security system gateway in a more convenient spot though
Nothing high bandwidth
Powerline I've been gazing at
Yeah. I just did it at my dad's place so he could have hardwired internet upstairs without running cable - he's on an older computer that has issues with WiFi cards (none of the 3 we've tried worked so gave up).
When we buy a house I'll probably splurge on some nice PoE switch and get a bunch of PoE cameras ๐
Serves 100Mb/s no issue. Just sucks it's not gigabit but it's fine for what he uses it for.
Powerline is a good idea though
Powerline Ethernet is fucking magic AFAIC
Nano routers also work for giving wireless capabilities to wired devices
Honestly you could run powerline from downstairs to switch upstairs, run cameras to the upstairs switch, and still be OK. Most cameras only use a few Mb/s so out of 100, you could run quite a few.
it might be worthwhile speaking to your landlord and just seeing if you can run a few cables, if they trust you enough to fix it later
It's a one floor apartment
@scenic radish just runs a signal on a different frequency, nothing too magic
haha
2.4GHz in an apartment setting is ๐คข
@wet pilot yeah it's just interesting to me
Haven't had issues with 2.4 that I've seen
Surprisingly
Yeah when I first found out about powerline I remember being shocked and bewildered
And my phone often connects to 2.4 because of the stupid spot I need to put my router
No licensing fees
Smart devices could be spread out around your house a lot, I guess it makes sense in a lot of situations
Reminds me of people pissing and moaning about ecobee being 2.4 GHz only lol
What, are you watching movies on it or something?
so I'm being the dumb and assuming "bigger number=better"
Is ecobee cloud based?
probably
2.4 can be really successful if deployed correctly but it never is
what isn't these days ๐ฆ
They're gonna make a CLoud Connected Coffin one day
The only thing I'm really concerned about when I move is heating
Right now our place just has those portable electric convection heaters
And their cloud API is trash
And I put them on smart plugs and got a zigbee temperature sensor, easy setup for Home Assistant thermostat
Works fantastically
Just watch your circuit loading
But with centralised heating the heat will take longer to propagate
Yeah I'm not overloading anything dw
UK sockets are 13A
Ah nice
Well the smart plugs do get a little warm when the heaters are on
But nothing crazy
๐ I think it's fine
10A standard in the US. 15A is possible on 110V 20A on 220V
Our double sockets are usually 20A, single ones are 13A
My smart plugs are only 10A but I don't have any single device that uses that much lol
Network wise, I'm currently running:
- 6 5MP Reolink PoE cameras to an
- 8-port PoE + 2-port SFP Netgear GS510TLP switch, which connects via LACPd 1Gb/s SFP (fiber, for lightning strike separation) to a...
- 24-port PoE + 4 port SFP+ Netgear GS728TP switch, which connects via LACPd 10Gb/s SFP+ (twinax copper DAC) to a ...
- 16-port SFP+ Mikrotik CRS317-1G-16S+RM switch, which connects via LACPd 10Gb/s SFP+ to ...
- Whitebox pfSense build, "router on a stick", serving 400Mb/s WAN side, 10Gb/s LAN side
I've got all of that, plus my whitebox FreeNAS, and two R710s, and numerous Ras Pis and various HA stuff.
I understood some of those numbers ๐
Anyway yeah I just don't know how I'm gonna do the heating in a similar way to how I do it now
Radiators usually have those knob things
That scares me
How do I automate a freaking knob
True but the Cert would be nice to put on my resume.
Yeah I was thinking I'd work towards CCNA after I finish my degree
A networking class at your local community college would be cheaper and serve you better
@valid halo I'd give you my old Cisco switches if you want them, and are willing to pay shipping. 3x 2950, 2x 2948G
@wet pilot you can have a 20A outlet on 120V. Just requires 12 ga wire
I don't think community college is a thing here ๐ค
I'd love to say yes but I would not know the first thing to do with them.
Ain't worth much these days, just for lab crap
@scenic radish huh neat. Seems like ๐ฅ
Nah. 12 gauge takes care of that
Yeah
I mean for people plugging dumb shit into it ๐
14g = 15A
12g = 20A
Ah. Well, your breaker should take care of that lol. You'd be hard-pressed to exceed 20A unless you plug in two space heaters or something
I guess the 20A would have the funky plug with the horizontal prong
Not necessarily.
Not necessarily
Lol
I like you
Kitchen circuits are required to be 20A, at least in the US
And bathroom has to have GFCI
Because of high-draw devices like coffeemakers, etc
Well, anywhere with water i think
Is this a good

Home Assistant: 0.104 adds the ability to automate Insurance Fraud

Can't have home automation if your home is a prison cell!
Automate your Prison
touches head
then escape
Hackerman.png
Exactly
The scanners gets me every time lmao
Gotta hack the scanners man
Some prisons are being equipped with drone detectors now because people were drone-dropping cell phones and whatnot.
that's where they hide the Bitcoin
tfw your prisoners escape from a quad copter picking them up out of the exercise yard
Fucking clickbait farticles
I'm imagining that getting to a prisoner, part by part over many months, to be assembled,
mouthful of gasoline here, envelope with wire there...
a year later. "Prisoner 6267 what are you doing?" "There are no strings on me..." -floats into the air and then zooms off into the distance-
So about that Wyze thing...
The vulnerability started December 4th and did not involve any of our production data tables. While significant, this database only contained a subset of data. It did not contain user passwords or government-regulated personal or financial information. It did contain customer emails along with camera nicknames, WiFi SSIDs, Wyze device information, body metrics for a small number of product beta testers, and limited tokens associated with Alexa integrations.
Body metrics? Are they working on smart scales / fitness trackers now?
Wyze is doing a lot
I have a Garmin Index but to have the data easily accessible in HA would be neat.
@valid halo Honestly they are. Some of the stuff is rebranded other-company stuff (Dafang) but it's still neat what they're doing.
They were trying to make a Wyze NAS/Network Hard Drive
but their partner fell through
^--- re the drone - there was an aussie prison escape, the guys girlfriend went on a scenic flight and held up the pilot and forced him to land in the yard
I heard in Greece of a helicopter prison escape
Can wyze stuff work without internet access
I assume they're all subsidised in cost so they can get that sweet sweet metrics
They can. Standard restrictions as any other blocked device (no viewing without port forwarding an NVR, etc)
That is, if you are using the RTSP firmware
yep
I VPN in for everything anyway
same. makes it easier haha
Except for owntracks
Which doesn't work well for me at all anyway ๐ฆ
Not sure why
ahh. you forwarding mqtt for that?
I have an automation to turn heating on/off when I enter/leave a certain radius from home
HTTP not MQTT
could give Life360 a go. i had issues with Owntracks myself.
The device was updating my location all weird. Didn't want to spend any more time trying to fix it after several hours.
Yeah it never updates my location unless I do it manually pretty much
Said i was at work when I was clearly at home, restarted HA, it was fine after that. but then never detected me leaving. Restarted, detected me as gone. Rinse, repeat.
<large expletive list>
just found the box for the skybell cam in the attic, and turns out it literally says on it "Exclusive to Alarm.com, not compatible with skybell app"
fml
Are there any non-cloud video doorbells?
I assume people are just better off putting a zigbee switch or similar and an RTSP camera and automating the rest with HA
My new doorbell
Each button will trigger a different tone or lighting effect
Except for one of them which will activate the paintball aimbot turret
why lol
there are some non-cloud video doorbells and some that can be hacked to be made non-cloud
Nice, which ones?
RCA make one that can be controlled locally.
I am not actually using a hue dimmer switch as a doorbell don't worry
That would be a dumb idea, you can literally take the switch out it's just attached by a magnet so you can bring it around with you
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077KW2T1H < RCA Smart Doorbell
It's basically a Ring drop-in.
3 stars ๐ค
Yeah I don't know.
RCA has an older version that is alittle cheaper that you can drop custom firmware on
Two of the first reviews said it "broke" in some form or fashion following power isuses.
Probably surges, fried them.
Honestly if that RCA drops below $100 I might be inclined to get one just to tinker with and even if I don't like it totally, I may keep it for the back door.
one thing i wouldn't do with ha right off the bat, hook my house alarm to it lol
Right? Like you have to have your HA on spot unless you wanna be annoying the heck out of yourself or missing would-be events.
dang that thing's thin
Hack it how? Firmware re-write?
yea
Interesting, I've not seen a firmware that supports camera feeds
well i hate this stupid skybell camera
send it to me i'll take it lol
no i'll hack the thing
well hell ifyou know how ot hack it shoot me a walkthrough
i've been googling and can't find squat
i mean i found an older model that someone was able to connect a UART cable and root it.. .but that literally provides nothing except network access
it's one of those i need it in my hands type of deals lol
mmm hmm
sassy snap
hmmm what about the Uniden DB1? Says it supports ONVIF
$50, not too shabby (if i can find it)
๐ค
I have my reverse proxy exposed straight in the world wide web
Because I live life on the edge
YOLO
I love forwarding telemarketers to the FBI help center
i just love fuckin with em
not me most i hear is the "click" noise when my switch box switches them over behind me
well legally they aren't supposed to call cell phones
i haven't had a landline in... shoot... 25ish years?
old habit, I kind of like it. came in handy a few times
even used it to charge my cell during a power out
If anyone has Philips hue dimmers and wants to use them as the primary switch for the room without looking dumb as hell, here's how I have them set up:
Looks pretty clean IMO. I can list the parts if anyone wants
That's over the box for an existing light switch
interesting. that could work well
Been like that for years. Passes the (soon to be) WAF
@scenic radish That's nice. Is any of that custom printed or all off the shelf?
Thanks. All off the shelf. Screwless switch plate and one of those commercial light switches that use the key to turn on/off
Or just wire the switch always hot
Then the hue dimmer just sticks to the screwless plate
E Z P Z
i've seen some good examples with the paddle switches and a lockout cover
Yeah, same. I have toggle switches though which is why I went this route
so what's your favoraite thing you've gotten from Home Assistant so far?
My dimmer switch does in fact look dumb as hell
I got a question. Figured I would ask here I guess. Not sure where to ask.
Will these work with home assistant?
i think there have been successful experiments "3d printing" living tissue
yeah, hence the quotes
I don't think they've actually successfully printed anything usable
but the way that technology is advancing I wouldn't be surprised
@midnight adder what are you doing with that?
Curious, anyone have any experience with rotary encoders other than then ubiquitous KY-040?
damn that is some dingy yellow plastic
Anyone have problems with the smart things button eating batteries?
@hidden cradle you should get some hydrogen peroxide after that
eh it's an apartment, i'm sure he doesn't care ๐
it might actually be that color, see the screws
lol wow... "New product for you boys in sales!!! That's right, we have a new 'on the cusp of baby diarrhea' that is just going to FLY off the shelves!"
@last dirge My aunt has old rca cameras from defender. We use these to get them up & working cause defender basically told us just buy their new shit.
I know my hue lights don't like that dimmer
@last dirge Actually there's been improvements "lately", as in this year. https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/israeli-scientists-create-world-s-first-3d-printed-heart-using-ncna996031
I used to belong to a hackerspace where one of the members was a lower extremeties surgeon
he got an article published where he 3d printed a patient's foot from a MRI
What is that, a heart for ants?
he was able to do all of the stuff they normally have to do with the person open on the operating table without the person even being there
I want to say heart valves are already being 3d printed as they're not actively organic (more mechanical than anything)
it saved like 6 hours off of the surgery time
Anyone using Google assistant with home assistant?
I'm thinking about it, although I'm not a fan of exposing HA to the world.
I'm wondering if I can't instead use IFTTT with an exposed API relay that only does a few things, then send responses either to the house if I'm home or to my phone as a notification otherwise.
It's a little wonky, but it feels safer
I was wondering if lights paired to home assistant are available to Google home
