forest edge
#

his router was from McDonalds

brave panther
#

Lmao

scenic radish
#

My router has done stupid shit before

brave panther
#

Unhappy meal

scenic radish
#

Like flipping its shit when I tried assigning a previous DHCP reservation to a different device

#

After changing the previous device's IP

raven ember
#

That sounds like a bad domestic situation

brave panther
#

Ick. I built a pfSense box for $400, would NEVER go back to a consumer router.

scenic radish
#

Google Wifi

#

So yeah.

#

Got it before I got into home automation

raven ember
#

All things considered, I'm still a fairly big proponent of a good Ubiquiti setup

scenic radish
#

I was able to clear the ARP table through some backwards-ass way which fixed it

brave panther
#

Yeah I use 2 UniFi AP AC Pro for WiFi - it's simply amazing.

raven ember
#

But apparently Ubiquiti is the root cause of all my MQTT issues...

brave panther
#

I've got quite an extensive home network setup ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

I'm surrounded by linksys cause i got them cheap lol

scenic radish
#

Maybe I really should get an edgerouter x...

forest edge
#

you all havve richer taste lol

brave panther
#

Linksys in bridge mode are fine too, they just act as dumb APs

#

WAN port to switch on the right VLAN, acts the same as a UniFi (just not as fancy) ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

mos of mine are either running ddwrt or tamato

raven ember
#

Nothing that runs ddwrt or tomato can NAT fast enough for me

forest edge
#

like i said, cheap lol

tulip sage
#

Was actually just looking at ddwrt router setups yesterday

#

๐Ÿ˜‚ good info

forest edge
#

pretty flexible

#

I bought two cheap 1200's off ebay for 15 bucks and flashed them both with ddwrt and now they ap for a good portion of a house + barn and been doing it without issue for 3 years lol

raven ember
#

I haven't seen a ddwrt or tomato router yet that does much more than 300Mbit

forest edge
#

?

#

my ea6400 is ac

tulip sage
#

I live in a small flat at monent so APs not necessary but more for the VPN side of it.

forest edge
#

oh yea you can do that, run openvpn directly off the router lol

steel urchin
#

@raven ember my AC1700 gets me my max speed, ~980mbit

#

you need to look into CTF

#

without it, you won't get NAT'd gigabit speeds

forest edge
#

I turn that off

steel urchin
#

locally you will, but not NAT

brave panther
#

that's what my pfSense does for my primary location but that sounds interesting for access to parents' network remotely. I'm using a Pi for that too, but VPN on the router itself might be a better solution.

valid halo
#

Ah Router Talk.

#

I remember looking into trying to replace my Verizon FIOS ISP Router

wet pilot
#

you can ask them to enable the ethernet port on their ONT and they usually will

steel urchin
#

ATT politely told me to "eff off" when i asked

valid halo
#

Yeah it involved enabling that and a 120 dollar adaptor for the cable

#

and then the router.

wet pilot
#

oh, you have their tv service. that does make it harder

valid halo
#

Yeah...The Mom Approval Factor of No TV would um...Negative Numbers.

wet pilot
#

i only used internet from them

raven ember
#

Ouch. My local bell ran fiber into house (fttn) and terminated it at an ethernet jack in my basement. The installer even mounted it all on my networking panel.

steel urchin
#

if they offered legit bridging it wouldn't be an issue

valid halo
#

so I've felt a bit stuck with my current Router/Modem/Switch thingamabob

forest edge
#

router woes

steel urchin
#

my biggest issue with CTF is you don't get NAT loopback

#

but, i can't go down to ~300mbit when i'm paying for gigabit

#

plus... it's so awesome to get those speeds

forest edge
#

all it does is supposedly check the "important" bits of a packet while ignoring the rest of it to free up router headroom. at least that's how i understood it

steel urchin
#

yeah basically

#

it's a light version of NAT

#

which alleviates a ton of overhead

forest edge
#

but can cause issues too

#

like i think it was causing me presence detection issues lol

steel urchin
#

i tried to do some dnsmasq stuff, but it's mucking things up for me as well

#

trying to forward mydomain.com to my internal ip fixes dns lookups, but nginx sees the request coming FROM the router, so the response never makes it back to the client

brave panther
#

Need NAT hairpinning

steel urchin
#

scroll up ๐Ÿ˜›

brave panther
#

Yah ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I had to do that myself - it's a tradeoff.

valid halo
#

I think I have the Nat loopback

#

Internet Stuff is my worst tech subject

steel urchin
#

NAT loopback is hairpinning

brave panther
#

I traded off for a split DNS

#

internal requests resolve to the internal IP addresses; externally, things are just port forwarded and everything is happy

steel urchin
#

yeah... i hate compromising ๐Ÿคฃ

#

ask my wife ๐Ÿ˜‚

brave panther
#

HA

valid halo
#

Compromise?

#

That's called Losing with Extra Steps

steel urchin
#

yeah i made that word up

forest edge
#

I think the only concern i ever seen over ctf was the security aspect but have yet to see a single inatnce of it being exploited

#

so other than the issues it causes with like certian things needing the router to read the whole packet, it's user pref of to use it or not, it does help alot with it on if you need the full throughput

#

I'm stuck with non gigabit speeds through my isp so it impacts me in no way speed wise lol

valid halo
#

Speaking of Gigabit

#

who's ready for 5G

forest edge
#

and the tumors it brings.. not me!

valid halo
#

Do not deny the Green Glow of Progress

#

Up...Hol up. My 5G stopped working because I'm standing near a tree.

forest edge
#

I feel bad for thos eoffice workers who have that antenna piped in and the one guy who has to sit within firect line of site of the repeater lol

#

valid halo
#

I've heard that Gigabit 5G is finicky as a child who dark coffee strapped into a carseat

QPSK/QAM is NOT good for throughput or stability.. i'm surprised we're still on it

my rgbcw bulbs came with a free thing for an extra bulb and this one extra bulb keeps dropping from my wifi even when the light is not in use (on but off) and it's driving me nuts

valid halo

Aw man. I'm existing

valid halo
#

I've got a wifi bulb or two

steel urchin

have you checked the signal strength in that spot? good ol wifi anal-izer

I've just got a four-pack of LIFX bulbs at the moment. They work fine.

I been using wifi analyzer since it came out on my galaxy s2 lol

If I get like 20 Wifi Bubs. Can I like Congest or overload my Wee-Fee from them talking to the router all the time.

clever mortar
#

Yes, but the odds are low

scenic radish

It certainly isn't ideal

hidden cradle
#

Anyone know of an alarm clock that can be remotely turned off?

steel urchin
#

20 might be ok, 50 might do it

brave panther
#

Yes you absolutely can but that only happens at larger amounts of devices

#

right.

woeful roost

Can I just say Home Assistant's climate/generic_thermostat integration is freaking awesome

Thanks y'all

@hidden cradle smart plug can remotely turn it off lol

My only Z-wave Device is a door sensor at the moment

brave panther

people are so dramatic at OMG You use the WiFis? That's bad!!!

hidden cradle

What about the battery and setting the time again?

scenic radish

No need

scenic radish

valid halo

It gets worse Noble

#

I use a Tuya device that talks to the cloud ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

brave panther
#

I frequent /r/homeautomation on Reddit and it annoys the heck out of me

#

I flash all my Tuya stuff

hidden cradle

I was looking at Lenovo smart clock but wow it's expensive

forest edge
#

I don't think that can be remotely controled either

woeful roost
#

I bought some tuya plugs, then bought some tasmota compatible ones and returned the tuya ones

valid halo
#

I was looking at a google home hub today

woeful roost
#

No regrets

valid halo

but I was like "That'd be dumb to lock myself into Google's Ecosystem

forest edge

that lenovo smart clock was 40 bucks on black friday

brave panther

Tuya, for the most part, should all be using esp8266 esp8265 esp32 etc. the things i've seen, so far, have all been able to be flashed with pins or OTA out of the box.

hidden cradle

I sometimes wake up before alarm, get to work and go oh... Did I shut the alarm off?

woeful roost

I run Google Assistant SDK on the same Pi that I run Home Assistant and Phoscon on

woeful roost

One of these days I need to make a Home Automation tinkering plan

Home Automation is like the adult version of Lego. How can I take all this stuff apart, and put it back together in different ways?

steel urchin

there's too many options, and the docs don't really give much guidance unless you want to install on RPi

scenic radish

Some regular clocks have a timeout for the alarm

steel urchin

my brain wants node-red, my heart wants native

woeful roost

valid halo

"Hey Autovoice Ask Alexa to Flush my toilet"

steel urchin

thank you for your approval

woeful roost

Yeah there's no other non-support general home asisstant channel in here that I can see

@quaint osprey maybe ask the mods first. Self-promotion is against the rules here and it might fall under that

tidal bronze

Been using the s5 for a long time. Love it. Just got the S6 as well.

I've got three blinding white blubs on one side and one "daylight" bulb on the other side

woeful roost
#

@brave panther yeah they use zigbee

#

I use the Conbee II instead of Hue Bridge

#

Works perfectly

brave panther
#

Very good

hushed basalt
#

Hue Ambience should be good general bulbs if you can get the right price

woeful roost
#

You shouldn't really have 50 smart bulbs in your house anyway lol

#

If you have that many bulbs just buy a zigbee dimmer switch instead

brave panther
#

When you add them all up, I'm sure people do.

brave panther
#

Hah true. But some want red drop lights so.. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

valid halo
#

I've been looking at bulbes because for my HA history. No Nuetral switcehs have been a lost cause

#

apart from Lutron

brave panther

@valid halo Lutron Caseta

#

Yep

proper swift

I have a few MiLight's outside. mostly so I can do dumb things like say "if decemeber make red/green"

hushed basalt
#

Can you just put a shelly in the roof

tulip sage
#

To be honest thinking about it now i probably don't need colour bulbs, i will eventually get some light strips installed at some point for that ๐Ÿคท

valid halo
#

A shelly on the roof?

hushed basalt
#

And use the active just as a switch to the exisiting wire

woeful roost
#

@proper swift okay that's an acceptable use and is pretty cool

valid halo
#

I aint gonna go crawling in my attic XD

hushed basalt

Shelley? Shelly? Shelllyyyy

so that kind of project feels ill advised

hushed basalt

Then don't buy Any more bulbs either :D

brave panther

ick yea... would be a shame to do all that and move, and have to re-install what was there before

valid halo

As I am not playing "How the fuck do I Home Assistant" over the phone LMAO

woeful roost
#

Yeah exactly

#

No one's gonna know what to do with our kinda stuff lmao

#

Only thing I wouldn't remove is network cables from the walls probably because that's effort to remove

brave panther
#

And it's pretty cheap really.

woeful roost
#

And anyone can work that out tbh

valid halo
#

Don't worry. My house is too old to have network cables in the walls

#

๐Ÿ˜„

brave panther

woeful roost

I don't know anyone else in the UK who has network cables in the walls

valid halo

I get the Jealous when I see people talking about building a new house with Cable Drops everywhere and such.

woeful roost
#

Well I don't either because I'm renting rn but I would usually

#

Yeah same

brave panther
#

I think outside of the technically inclined, 80% of people don't care to have everything plugged in. Most just concede with WiFi on their laptop/phone/tablet/TV.

tidal bronze
#

@woeful roost what's wrong with 50 plus of anything ? ๐Ÿ™‚ I run ESP, zigbee, zwave and zwave plus.

valid halo
#

Why do things gotta cost MONEY

woeful roost
#

Hah it's not wrong I just think if someone bought 50+ smart bulbs it likely is not the most efficient solution

#

Because you can get zigbee dimmer switches like the one I linked a minute ago

brave panther
#

How else can they alert intruders with red light?

#

And shower in blue?

#

And be green with envy!

valid halo
#

I need network cable runs so I can setup TensorFlow using Defense turrets

woeful roost
#

Just put a long light strip in your gutter

tidal bronze
#

There is no right or wrong with these things. I guess comes down the cost and implementation.

valid halo

woeful roost

Yeah exactly

brave panther
woeful roost

If you want party mode with all your bulbs changing colours independently

brave panther
#

Something like this.

woeful roost
#

Then yeah you'd probably need a ton of smart bulbs

valid halo
#

Speaking of smart tech.

#

Oh wait no this would be dumb tech

#

They make a Huge Enter Button that you can SLAM your fist down upon

#

Sounds like a good idea for us

woeful roost

@brave panther dude holy macaroni that thing is scary

brave panther

Makes it that much more enticing!

woeful roost
#

@valid halo I saw that lol

Man I need a sentry gun in my life

That's the coolest thing I've seen in a while and it comes in its own portable briefcase

My dream of playing real life team fortress will soon come to be

valid halo

woeful roost

brave panther

valid halo

Dang

it would have been funny

"Robber gets shrekt by Home Assistant Sentry Guns"

brave panther

i mean, a million minutes is still a matter of minutes.

just pay neighbourhood kids to reload the one you arent using

woeful roost

@brave panther lol

proper swift

a 3d printer is an infinitely deep hole. worse than home automation

brave panther

Could just 3d print a 3d printer. Like how you can pretty much make a lathe using a lathe.

woeful roost
#

My friend has Ender 5

#

With a bunch of mods

brave panther
#

yeah the assembly was a lot like a Lego kit

#

then, you mod it. takes more time modding it than it did assembling.

valid halo
#

They have metallic 3D print now

woeful roost
#

He replaced some plastic parts with metal I think

valid halo
#

3D Print a Car.

brave panther
#

same.

woeful roost
#

And made things more stable

#

Is there like a kit for modding it?

#

Or are they just really basic common parts like nuts and bolts

brave panther
#

Nah, just lots of small mods.

  • Silent motherboard with upgraded motor drivers (no motor whining, high pitched screeching is terrible)
  • All metal hot end (filament doesn't get bunched up since the hot end is all metal and there's no gap for filament to melt into)
  • Metal extruder (filament doesn't slip since metal doesn't flex like plastic does)
  • Better PTFE tube (filament doesn't get bunched up or stick against the tubing)
  • BLTouch self-leveler (no need to manually adjust the bed level, for the most part)
  • 3d printed tool holder, drawers, cable management (just little improvements)
#

the individual mods do come in kits tho

woeful roost
#

Ah cool

#

Are the mods expensive?

#

O_O

brave panther
#

@woeful roost I had a friend print one of those 2U 15 Ras Pi blade mounts but honestly it was too many so I will eventually end up re-printing one myself for perhaps 6-8 instead.

ocean mirage
#

did you get the skr mainboard?

woeful roost
#

I have at least 4 Pis in the house right now

#

15 is too many for me lol

#

My R210 II handles all my needs fine anyway

brave panther
#

Have two R710s X5690 (12 core, 24 thread @ 3.4GHz) 144GB / 160GB RAM, it's definitely overkill.

valid halo
#

I have 1 Rpi

#

and 2 zeros that I lost

#

๐Ÿ˜ฆ

woeful roost
#

lmao that's a lot of power

valid halo
#

Jaysus

woeful roost
#

I haven't even checked what my R210 II draws

brave panther
#

Yea. Around 230W each idle running no VMs (ESXi 6.7)

ocean mirage
#

thats a lot of idle

brave panther
#

running VMs, not a lot more. but the heat is definitely a concern for most.

woeful roost
#

I like the switch I got, it's a zyxel 24 port fanless managed switch and I got it for ยฃ35 (retail price is like ยฃ90)

#

Fanless managed switches are a rare breed

ocean mirage
#

Ill check my server power draw when I get a UPS

woeful roost
#

What hypervisor do you use @brave panther

brave panther
#

@woeful roost I use ESXi 6.7

woeful roost
#

Ah

#

I'm a Proxmoxer myself

brave panther
#

but honestly I might downgrade in the future as it's a lot of power for the ~15 VMs I run right now

#

Yeah I am considering that

woeful roost
#

Only 15? ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

ocean mirage
#

Ahh cool, thanks for the list

brave panther
#

Yeah I moved a lot off onto its own hardware the last year so there's less to do virtually.

ocean mirage
#

I just bought a different motherboard myself similar reasons

woeful roost
#

I can definitely recommend Proxmox

ocean mirage
#

also makes it easy for BLtouch to be added and no need to flash a bootloader to update firmware

brave panther
#

Right

ocean mirage
#

I am gonna hold off on hotend/extruder upgrades for a while, feel like I need to live with it for a while

#

but I would go the hemera when I do, pricey though

#

like 70% or more what I paid for the printer lol

brave panther
#

Yeah the little "missing spots" go away when your extruder and hotend are able to pull filament without nags

proper swift
#

I need to upgrade my servers, I'm running like 20+ VM's and need to bring up another 10 or so.. sugh..

ocean mirage
#

I've been getting decent results as is really, I am happy with it for now

#

gonna order a capricorn PTFE tube tho, that will be useful in the mean time

woeful roost
#

My next homelab upgrades are gonna be:

  1. Bigger SSD for VMs
  2. Extra 16GB of memory to max it out
  3. UPS
  4. Maybe upgrade from E3-1220v2 to E3-1240v2
#

Actually maybe UPS should be #2

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I really need to get a UPS but that is boring money spent

woeful roost
#

Yeah it kinda is

ocean mirage
#

Power went out for the first time this year the other day tho

brave panther
#

yup. the big reason you want a full metal hotend is the PTFE tube on the stock one doesn't come all the way to the nozzle and even if you can get it there by adjusting it, over time it'll come loose and create a pocket where molten filament can gather and gob up your nozzle

woeful roost
#

I should be more worried about me accidentally flipping the wrong switch than actual powercuts lmao

#

I did it a few weeks ago

#

The feeling of dread when I hear the room go quiet

ocean mirage
#

Yeah, gonna keep my eye on that one Roo, if I see issues ill know what to check

brave panther
#

and extruder wise there's just flex in the plastic. that's more of an issue than the nozzle starting out, but both in the long run.

ocean mirage
#

ill just wait and get the hemera for my birthday or something lol

brave panther
#

๐Ÿ™‚

#

It's a bit odd when people ask.

#

"What you want for your birthday?"
"BLTouch"
"Err, what's that?"

woeful roost
#

I really badly need to build a PC because my laptop is garbage, but any time I have some spare cash I end up spending it on either my homelab or home automation

brave panther

I just made an Amazon list. haha

ocean mirage

I bought some better springs for the bed for cheap, see if they hold it in place better. happy with manual levelling for now

I can tell you don't buy Wyze

woeful roost

valid halo

The RTSP has been hit and miss for me

#

personally

woeful roost

I couldn't really find anything by searching on amazon

scenic radish
#

What's ass wireless?

valid halo
#

A camera you attach to your butt

woeful roost
#

2.4GHz

brave panther
#

when you have shitty connection

valid halo
#

its a back up camera for your self

ocean mirage
#

The first question is: does it really have to be wireless?

woeful roost
#

Well I'm not stretching a cable from my rack to the kitchen window

scenic radish
#

Why not

#

Do it

brave panther
#

@valid halo I've personally had no issues but it depends on distance, how many - and what type of - walls are in between, and the lowest denominator technology.

woeful roost
#

Oh so it's the wireless connection itself which is the problem?

brave panther
#

Wyze have other problems lately too

woeful roost
#

Wasn't there a supposed data breach

brave panther
woeful roost
#

I saw that the other day

brave panther
#

Mhmm

woeful roost
#

Yeah that

brave panther
#

they logged everyone out, to be safe

woeful roost
#

Can you not use them local-only?

ocean mirage
#

Its also much easier to power cameras if they arent wireless, just do some PoE

woeful roost
#

Ugh I wish I could hey google preheat the oven

ocean mirage
#

I'd just run some ethernet through the attic if you can

woeful roost
#

I don't have a PoE switch ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

brave panther
#

Yeah I PoE my 6 Reolink cams

valid halo
#

My biggest hurdle for Wired cams Is I don't want to drill holes in my walls

brave panther
#

Hay they are not that expensive but I don't know your budget so that's relative

woeful roost
#

Also attic is a no, rented apartment

brave panther
#

Ah that's fair @valid halo

woeful roost
#

I do actually have loft access, but I can't make any holes

valid halo
#

I don't want to break something XD

brave panther
#

If you break it, you can fix it. How else was your house put together to begin with? ๐Ÿ™‚

woeful roost
#

@brave panther I ideally wanted to spend less than ยฃ50 for the whole camera setup lol

brave panther
#

Gotcha. So Wyze and get a wifi repater? I don't know a lot about the current repeater technology but possibly something to look at.

woeful roost
#

How else was your house put together to begin with?
By a builder (I am not one) lol

brave panther
#

Or powerline adapters to add an additional network connection somewhere.

scenic radish
#

Yeah I have a powerline Ethernet set, they work pretty well

#

I'm only using it to place my security system gateway in a more convenient spot though

#

Nothing high bandwidth

valid halo
#

Powerline I've been gazing at

brave panther
#

Yeah. I just did it at my dad's place so he could have hardwired internet upstairs without running cable - he's on an older computer that has issues with WiFi cards (none of the 3 we've tried worked so gave up).

woeful roost
#

When we buy a house I'll probably splurge on some nice PoE switch and get a bunch of PoE cameras ๐Ÿ˜

brave panther
#

Serves 100Mb/s no issue. Just sucks it's not gigabit but it's fine for what he uses it for.

woeful roost
#

Powerline is a good idea though

scenic radish
#

Powerline Ethernet is fucking magic AFAIC

woeful roost
#

Nano routers also work for giving wireless capabilities to wired devices

brave panther
#

Honestly you could run powerline from downstairs to switch upstairs, run cameras to the upstairs switch, and still be OK. Most cameras only use a few Mb/s so out of 100, you could run quite a few.

ocean mirage
#

it might be worthwhile speaking to your landlord and just seeing if you can run a few cables, if they trust you enough to fix it later

woeful roost
#

It's a one floor apartment

wet pilot
#

@scenic radish just runs a signal on a different frequency, nothing too magic

woeful roost

Single bedroom

@ocean mirage lol I don't trust me enough to fix it later

ocean mirage

haha

wet pilot
#

2.4GHz in an apartment setting is ๐Ÿคข

scenic radish
#

@wet pilot yeah it's just interesting to me

#

Haven't had issues with 2.4 that I've seen

#

Surprisingly

woeful roost
#

Yeah when I first found out about powerline I remember being shocked and bewildered

scenic radish
#

And my phone often connects to 2.4 because of the stupid spot I need to put my router

valid halo
#

Hey. Why does everything use 2.4ghz

#

and not 5ghz

wet pilot
#

No licensing fees

scenic radish
#

Signal strength

#

For low-bandwidth devices 5 shows little to no benefit

woeful roost
#

Smart devices could be spread out around your house a lot, I guess it makes sense in a lot of situations

valid halo
#

licensing fees

#

ew

#

be more like USB

scenic radish
#

Reminds me of people pissing and moaning about ecobee being 2.4 GHz only lol

#

What, are you watching movies on it or something?

valid halo
#

so I'm being the dumb and assuming "bigger number=better"

woeful roost
#

Is ecobee cloud based?

valid halo
#

probably

wet pilot
#

2.4 can be really successful if deployed correctly but it never is

valid halo
#

what isn't these days ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

scenic radish
#

Unfortunately

#

But it's HomeKit compatible

#

And works with HomeKit controller

valid halo
#

They're gonna make a CLoud Connected Coffin one day

woeful roost
#

The only thing I'm really concerned about when I move is heating

#

Right now our place just has those portable electric convection heaters

scenic radish
#

And their cloud API is trash

woeful roost
#

And I put them on smart plugs and got a zigbee temperature sensor, easy setup for Home Assistant thermostat

#

Works fantastically

wet pilot
#

Just watch your circuit loading

woeful roost
#

But with centralised heating the heat will take longer to propagate

#

Yeah I'm not overloading anything dw

#

UK sockets are 13A

wet pilot
#

Ah nice

woeful roost
#

Well the smart plugs do get a little warm when the heaters are on

#

But nothing crazy

#

๐Ÿ‘€ I think it's fine

wet pilot
#

10A standard in the US. 15A is possible on 110V 20A on 220V

woeful roost
#

Our double sockets are usually 20A, single ones are 13A

#

My smart plugs are only 10A but I don't have any single device that uses that much lol

valid halo
#

IIRC that's why some people worry about Son off and Shelly

#

their amp limit

brave panther
#

Network wise, I'm currently running:

  • 6 5MP Reolink PoE cameras to an
  • 8-port PoE + 2-port SFP Netgear GS510TLP switch, which connects via LACPd 1Gb/s SFP (fiber, for lightning strike separation) to a...
  • 24-port PoE + 4 port SFP+ Netgear GS728TP switch, which connects via LACPd 10Gb/s SFP+ (twinax copper DAC) to a ...
  • 16-port SFP+ Mikrotik CRS317-1G-16S+RM switch, which connects via LACPd 10Gb/s SFP+ to ...
  • Whitebox pfSense build, "router on a stick", serving 400Mb/s WAN side, 10Gb/s LAN side

I've got all of that, plus my whitebox FreeNAS, and two R710s, and numerous Ras Pis and various HA stuff.

valid halo
#

I understood some of those numbers ๐Ÿ˜„

woeful roost
#

Anyway yeah I just don't know how I'm gonna do the heating in a similar way to how I do it now

valid halo
#

I really should take a CCNA course

#

My internet knowledge is pathetic

woeful roost
#

Radiators usually have those knob things

#

That scares me

#

How do I automate a freaking knob

brave panther
#

Belt.

#

Pulleys.

wet pilot
#

@valid halo CCNA overkill

#

You can get the knowledge without giving Cisco more money

valid halo
#

True but the Cert would be nice to put on my resume.

woeful roost
#

Yeah I was thinking I'd work towards CCNA after I finish my degree

wet pilot
#

A networking class at your local community college would be cheaper and serve you better

brave panther
#

@valid halo I'd give you my old Cisco switches if you want them, and are willing to pay shipping. 3x 2950, 2x 2948G

scenic radish
#

@wet pilot you can have a 20A outlet on 120V. Just requires 12 ga wire

woeful roost
#

I don't think community college is a thing here ๐Ÿค”

valid halo
#

I'd love to say yes but I would not know the first thing to do with them.

brave panther

Ain't worth much these days, just for lab crap

valid halo

They'd be uh

very nice paper weights tho

wet pilot
#

@scenic radish huh neat. Seems like ๐Ÿ”ฅ

scenic radish

Nah. 12 gauge takes care of that

brave panther
#

Yeah

wet pilot

I mean for people plugging dumb shit into it ๐Ÿ˜€

brave panther

14g = 15A
12g = 20A

so I'll look into those

scenic radish
#

Ah. Well, your breaker should take care of that lol. You'd be hard-pressed to exceed 20A unless you plug in two space heaters or something

wet pilot

I guess the 20A would have the funky plug with the horizontal prong

brave panther
#

Not necessarily.

scenic radish

Not necessarily

Kitchen circuits are required to be 20A, at least in the US

Some prisons are being equipped with drone detectors now because people were drone-dropping cell phones and whatnot.

brave panther
#

So about that Wyze thing...

The vulnerability started December 4th and did not involve any of our production data tables. While significant, this database only contained a subset of data. It did not contain user passwords or government-regulated personal or financial information. It did contain customer emails along with camera nicknames, WiFi SSIDs, Wyze device information, body metrics for a small number of product beta testers, and limited tokens associated with Alexa integrations.

Body metrics? Are they working on smart scales / fitness trackers now?

valid halo
#

Wyze is doing a lot

brave panther
#

I have a Garmin Index but to have the data easily accessible in HA would be neat.

valid halo
#

Wyze makes me want to buy more cloud stuff

#

They have nice "Someone Elses Computers"

brave panther
#

@valid halo Honestly they are. Some of the stuff is rebranded other-company stuff (Dafang) but it's still neat what they're doing.

valid halo
#

They were trying to make a Wyze NAS/Network Hard Drive

but their partner fell through

hushed basalt
#

Can wyze stuff work without internet access

#

I assume they're all subsidised in cost so they can get that sweet sweet metrics

brave panther
#

They can. Standard restrictions as any other blocked device (no viewing without port forwarding an NVR, etc)

#

That is, if you are using the RTSP firmware

woeful roost

๐Ÿค”

Couldn't you just view it through Home Assistant?

brave panther

yep

woeful roost

I VPN in for everything anyway

brave panther

same. makes it easier haha

woeful roost

Except for owntracks

Which doesn't work well for me at all anyway ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

Not sure why

brave panther

ahh. you forwarding mqtt for that?

woeful roost
#

I have an automation to turn heating on/off when I enter/leave a certain radius from home

#

HTTP not MQTT

brave panther
#

could give Life360 a go. i had issues with Owntracks myself.

#

The device was updating my location all weird. Didn't want to spend any more time trying to fix it after several hours.

woeful roost
#

Yeah it never updates my location unless I do it manually pretty much

brave panther
#

Said i was at work when I was clearly at home, restarted HA, it was fine after that. but then never detected me leaving. Restarted, detected me as gone. Rinse, repeat.

woeful roost
#

Yeah it's annoying

#

Is Life360 open-source?

steel urchin

just found the box for the skybell cam in the attic, and turns out it literally says on it "Exclusive to Alarm.com, not compatible with skybell app"

#

woeful roost
#

Are there any non-cloud video doorbells?

#

I assume people are just better off putting a zigbee switch or similar and an RTSP camera and automating the rest with HA

#

Each button will trigger a different tone or lighting effect

#

Except for one of them which will activate the paintball aimbot turret

forest edge
#

why lol

#

there are some non-cloud video doorbells and some that can be hacked to be made non-cloud

woeful roost
#

Nice, which ones?

brave panther
#

RCA make one that can be controlled locally.

woeful roost
#

I am not actually using a hue dimmer switch as a doorbell don't worry

#

That would be a dumb idea, you can literally take the switch out it's just attached by a magnet so you can bring it around with you

brave panther
#

It's basically a Ring drop-in.

woeful roost
#

3 stars ๐Ÿค”

brave panther
#

Yeah I don't know.

forest edge
#

RCA has an older version that is alittle cheaper that you can drop custom firmware on

brave panther
#

Two of the first reviews said it "broke" in some form or fashion following power isuses.

#

Probably surges, fried them.

steel urchin
#

wow that was a beating to get back onto my alarm.com account

brave panther
#

Honestly if that RCA drops below $100 I might be inclined to get one just to tinker with and even if I don't like it totally, I may keep it for the back door.

forest edge
#

one thing i wouldn't do with ha right off the bat, hook my house alarm to it lol

brave panther
#

Right? Like you have to have your HA on spot unless you wanna be annoying the heck out of yourself or missing would-be events.

brave panther
#

dang that thing's thin

raven ember
#

Hack it how? Firmware re-write?

forest edge
#

yea

raven ember

Interesting, I've not seen a firmware that supports camera feeds

steel urchin

well i hate this stupid skybell camera

forest edge

send it to me i'll take it lol

steel urchin
forest edge

no i'll hack the thing

steel urchin

well hell ifyou know how ot hack it shoot me a walkthrough

i've been googling and can't find squat

i mean i found an older model that someone was able to connect a UART cable and root it.. .but that literally provides nothing except network access

forest edge

it's one of those i need it in my hands type of deals lol

i haven't had a landline in... shoot... 25ish years?

even used it to charge my cell during a power out

scenic radish

If anyone has Philips hue dimmers and wants to use them as the primary switch for the room without looking dumb as hell, here's how I have them set up:

#

Looks pretty clean IMO. I can list the parts if anyone wants

#

That's over the box for an existing light switch

ocean mirage
#

interesting. that could work well

scenic radish
#

Been like that for years. Passes the (soon to be) WAF

raven ember
#

@scenic radish That's nice. Is any of that custom printed or all off the shelf?

scenic radish
#

Thanks. All off the shelf. Screwless switch plate and one of those commercial light switches that use the key to turn on/off

#

Or just wire the switch always hot

#

Then the hue dimmer just sticks to the screwless plate

#

E Z P Z

wet pilot
#

i've seen some good examples with the paddle switches and a lockout cover

scenic radish
#

Yeah, same. I have toggle switches though which is why I went this route

shy prawn

so what's your favoraite thing you've gotten from Home Assistant so far?

woeful roost

My dimmer switch does in fact look dumb as hell

midnight adder
#

I got a question. Figured I would ask here I guess. Not sure where to ask.

Will these work with home assistant?

Yes that is duct tape and yes it is because my wife kept using the wrong switch

he got an article published where he 3d printed a patient's foot from a MRI

What is that, a heart for ants?

last dirge
#

he was able to do all of the stuff they normally have to do with the person open on the operating table without the person even being there

brave panther

I want to say heart valves are already being 3d printed as they're not actively organic (more mechanical than anything)

last dirge
#

it saved like 6 hours off of the surgery time

hidden cradle
#

Anyone using Google assistant with home assistant?

hexed magnet
#

I'm thinking about it, although I'm not a fan of exposing HA to the world.

I'm wondering if I can't instead use IFTTT with an exposed API relay that only does a few things, then send responses either to the house if I'm home or to my phone as a notification otherwise.

#

It's a little wonky, but it feels safer

hidden cradle
#

I was wondering if lights paired to home assistant are available to Google home
