this is probably #330944238910963714 question, but try to search for the fan name and see if anyone else has made them work with HA. It should be possible and I have lots of 433MHz devices still that I integrate to HA
yeah gotta go with the z-line of mobos for intel OC'ing
i asked the cpu cuz yeah you need the -k sku
sounds like you know what you're doing though ๐
200 internet points to whoever can name that movie
oh wait.. damn... nvm...
My wife would know
Something's telling me the babysitters
wtf is an internet point and how does it provide me with more stuff to add in HA?
are you referring to 4chan tendies or chicken strips? cuz there is a diffrence
Originally 4chan tendies
i thought so lol
But now real ones
There's someone selling a used Asus Z170-K, but it uses ass media usb controllers that hate my Oculus Rift...
pcie usb should be fairly cheap
๐คข
What's ass media
I can't believe this is considered a viable form of internet as part of a $60b rollout
Docsis3?
ASMedia. nfgCodex, ye I already got one but it felt like it worked better with the USB ports in the new motherboard than with the card
I got lots of disconnections before and none now so I'm assuming it's the the USB ports that were the problem before
probably... usb can be weird sometimes in weird ways... i have a usb cable that with nothing attached to it, computers think it's a storage device with 0 bytes available
i have an identical one that does not do the same thing
I need to figure out a way to tie a button on an Elgato streamdeck to call service homeassistant.restart on my dev system when I press it
Simple rest call should do it
Looks like the Elgato Software will let you open a website but doesn't have an option for a behind the scenes rest call that can pass a bearer token in a header
i should just go ahead and install bitfocus companion for it on my computer
the plugins are super simple to make.. it's just a simple nodejs script
Excellent bedside table gizmo
it works
ran out of little cable clamps so the wire's not managed completely
and I had to pull a few kickplates because the spacing was wrong; I'll have to re-fasten those
I am tired tuya converting today. Wish there was a faster method to do in bulk
Holy
and I ran out of sleeving so I couldn't sleeve the 12V lead that powers the end of the string
I admire your dedication
What clamps ? C?
P
Copy.
Flashed 22 today 8 more to go tomorrow and I think I am done with tuya stuff for a few months. ๐
Z wave
so you've got some stuff that just works off of switches
But they are always on. No one ever uses a light switch at my place. Been about 5 it 6 years.
plus the other wifi-controlled stuff?
Primary ones are always zwave.
Most tuya stuff are accent lighting or can live without stuff.
That would be the way to go.
Builders don't know jack about switch locations
yeah, I'd probably end up doing a lot of it myself
or paying a low voltage installer to deal with the switches
I do all the design move stuff but get the crew to run patch paint everything.
just let the pixie wranglers set device locations
Next project https://www.moen.com/whats-new/innovation/u
Ive been looking at that too. Let me know how it goes
Trying to surprise the wife, need to re-tile so will be some time. But will surely update
@last dirge those center LEDs how many W?
You have the special valve kit thing?
You mean the electronic valve?
Yeah
Going to get it adding 2 more side jets as well. But will have to gut everything and want to do it right.
I hear ya. The master bath is due for a full gut and redesign. It's not using it's space well
Always something to do ๐
Yup
Now I get only about 10 to 12 days a year to do anything at the house. So on a roll to get things done ๐
@amber bramble let us know if you get that working with HA. Know the perfect place for a mini
I want to re-do my master bath too.. but $$$
mostly to install a heated floor because its one of the coldest rooms in the house
๐ค
I've just been doing small improvements that don't cost a ton of money. I painted all the trim and doors in my place white which made it look so much better
Doesn't increase market value but increases marketability
And doing it myself probably saved me $1000+
More money to spend on sensors and other shit I don't need
man when we lived in DFW, painters were dirt cheap.. we got our entire house inside and out painted for like $2k... here in Austin just the outside was $8k ๐ฅด
no way i'm painting a 2 story house, i'd break my neck falling off a ladder
Painting is beyond the scope, pulling cable anytime
crawling in the attic!
Used to do custom av ages ago. Still keep in touch with all the guys. So just directing ๐
Well that and https://lsdinc.com/
@wet pilot Some vector art here: https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant-assets
@tidal bronze i keep meaning to make an automated tuyaconverter
Ideally it would be a web server in a docker container with a mounted usb wifi dongle
Would listen out for tuyas in pairing mode, notify you, then you can select the esphome yaml that you want to use from your github, flash the device, build that binary and upload it
Then ideally add it into HA as well
Would also need a travel router or something setup to connect to your wifi AP, or similar.
- Put device in pairing mode.
- Open website, select yaml in drop down.
- Hit submit
- ????
- Profit
Anything to make it faster would be great.
think I may have some small water ingress issue with my LEDs
damnit
got some flickering
Might not be water. I've found that addressable LEDs are very sensitive to EMI.
@young sigil nice find, I can do something with those lol
@ the vestor art
vvector
One more time
the double v is something with my keyboard. i haven't bothered to look into that yet lol
Lol that's weird
I made a long sleeved-T as the stores that stock the official ones don't ship to Australia.
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvery cool!
Going to try to get a photo of me in Antarctica wearing it and controlling my home.
nice
nnice
gonna automate some penguins too?
no but automating a fish thrower should be easy enough lol
using complex sensors and cameras to determine if in fact a penguin and not tediore is within range, load catapult and fire!
Trebuchets are superior
Which channel is good to get help with my first automation ?
only if you need range. catapults are fine for medium range
or if you need to throw a car
anyone familiar with dnsmasq?
I have an entry: address=/blah.com/192.168.1.55
that does not seem to have any effect on the network (this is applied via Tomato firmware on my router)
or rather... it does, but not the way i expected... i'm hosting an nginx server on that LAN IP, and it works if i hit the IP directly, but not the domain... pinging the domain translates to the right LAN IP as expected, so i'm sitting here like "huuuuuh?"
it's like the browser doesn't care about my dns ๐ฆ
hmm actually i am seeing nginx receiving the request... and responding with 200... this is odd
Firewire ๐ค
errr huh
When are you off there Tom?
Ship departs sometime around Jan 17th to 21st. I have yet to survive fire fighting training though...
Is help diagnosing a dryer issue out of bounds for the lounge ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
Nah
ask anyway ๐
i had GE out yesterday... dude spent 1.5hrs taking it apart and couldn't get a connector off, and ultimately ended up finding a bulletin saying there's a known manufacturer defect resembling the issue we were having.... joy... 3 week old dryer and it's b0rked already :/
Did some googling tonight. Thing runs as long as the door is closed. Push the power button and the lights come on. Punch it again and the lights go off. Dryer keeps running and clothes are still wet. I think it is the control panel. Going to dig in tomorrow.
it punching it causes lights to go off and on then yes you got some kind of short lol
This week has been expensive. Something about a brake booster on one car, brakes and shocks on another. Oh well, life goes on and it is only money
it's only money till you got none then it's trash bins and prayers
I have been there. It sucks but I made it through. I am blessed beyond what I deserve. Just like to try and DIY things as much as I can before I call someone
if it's a fancy dryer it isn't worth it. if it's an older dryer then it's worth it and cheaper to fix yourself
general rule of thumb
Not sure what you call fancy. Kenmore something or other. About 5 years old
you may get lucky and find an aftermarket replacement board that's not too bad expensive wise but sometimes tracking those things down can be a real pain in the ass
I've replaced so many boards on some many appliances to keep them going it's not evven funny lol
fancy by the bells and whistles
if it has an lcd screen ditch it lol
the parts to replace get dumb expensive IF you can even find them
and when they are like there are usually multiple boards in play and tracking down the exact issue is a major pain
You sound like you are in the know
cheap is my game. I would use bubblegum to hold a fridge door if I thought it would work
shit i'll tell you about an expensive week
so wait you're literally punching the unit?
or do you mean the pushing the button?
yeah i mean there's not much to a dryer actually.... i'd guess control board as well :S
I already fixed the thermistor on the thing
I just try and do what I can. If itโs too complex, I donโt mind paying someone. I just hate the, โ I replaced the fuse, here is you 500.00 bill type bs.
If the control board is blown, will it be obvious?
depends on how old it is
pieces have gotten smaller
but you could probably look for blown capacitors
burnt resistors, the typical type things
The thermistor was obvious. Dryer threw a code. No codes now.
hehe when the code reporter goes out ๐
you gotta get access to it and inspect it, most of the time you won't see anything but once you start looking at everything attached and rule out all the simple things then the control board is all that's left
punching it and causing lights to go out is usually a sign of something loose
I got lucky with my dishwasher. Only one electric shock while testing the replacement control board. Then the ELCB tripped about 5 minutes later ๐ค Replaced that too.
lol
@green inlet tub light?
Is it on you mean?
When you punch
Lmao......I didnโt really punch. More of a donkey kick
Lol. So what goes on/off with punch/kick/lick
๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
if your kicking the thing then you likely knocked it loose lol
It just runs no matter what unless the door is open
thats control board
Power button does nothing but turn lights on and off
So your tub light, is it controller or just the door switch m
door open it turns off the switch sounds fine to me
but if the power button does nothing but turn off lights then it's the board
Itโs one or the other
Trying to figure out if your tub light is controlled via the controller or just a dumb light linked to door switch
on fancy ones it all runs off the board
Tell me what to do?
they do that initially so people will buy a new dryer
How does the tub light behave with normal operation ?
the real kicker about appliances is that in the world there are only three manufactures that makes every appliance on the planet lol
So seriously, I am married....๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ. She does all the laundry. I did laundry for a couple months till we figured out I was using fabric softener for detergent
lol
at least you weren't pouring dishsoap in there
Lol
If your tub light is controller based you can 50/50 decide if controller has gone south
Ok. I just walked in there and the door was open and the light was on.
Normal
No lcd lights on
Does the door lock and tub light turn off when it was working ?
I closed the door and the lights went off and the dryer started running. Still no lcd light on
And my wife said the clothes were still wet
Lights go off when it starts spinning if light is controller based. Generally
To me it sounds like the board
Sounds like your tub light is door switch based.
But still things are pointing to the controller? Electric or gas ?
Electric
the only real way to know is to get eyes on the board
So everything works other than the heating element?
If you want the lcd lights to come on, all I have to do is push the power button. Lights will come on. If I push the button again, lights will go off, but dryer keeps running.
did you read the manual on the thing? just so you know what it "should" be doing?
if you don't know what it should be doing when you press things it makes it pretty hard to know what's broke and what is intended
Yep
the wet clothes after it running is a clear sign something is broken
I'm leaning toward the board but it could just be the heating element as well
Ok, well I know this....when you press the power button, the lcd lights come on, you st the thing, and then you press play/pause button and it goes
Hmmm unless your are doing delicates @forest edge
it's a flip of a coin till you open the thing up and start inspecting it
well i would image his wife knows how to work it
and if all she gets is wet clothes then there is an issue
Yes, going to look at the board tomorrow. Problem is, unless itโs obvious....like smoked, I wonโt be able to tell
yea well thats when google fu'ing a replacement board to find cost becomes such a fun and wonderful thing to do
and if the board cost half the price of the dryer then you chuck the dryer lol
Prob compare a board against a service call and go from there
thing about paying for labor on top of parts.. you could spend more on this dryer than a brand new one costs lol
Nowadays cheaper to buy a new one
To be determined. I just paid 300 for new oven racks cause I did a self clean with them inside. Did you know you canโt do that? Pisses the wife off ๐คฃ
๐
weird, some you actually can
I use to clean a pizza pan using the self clean setting on the oven lol
it really turned that pan silver too lol
Well apparently the past two ovens I have owned you canโt. Cause she very quickly advised me that I did the same thing in our old oven
lol
@green inlet they do have classes on how to operate home appliances
Now I am wondering this dryer is issues is blown board or operator error
that be embarrassing. class just to learn how to operate the microwave
I am really not that stupid. Just have had a bad week. I should probably stick to the exterior maintenance and leave the interior to my wife
do they give you a gold star sticker in the end?
I promise it is not operator error.
I am messing with you man
you kicked it.. it might be operator error lol
I mean REALLY....who takes out the racks to self clean an oven. The only reason I started the self cleaning was because the frickโn RACKS were dirty ๐คฃ
electronic devices and blunt force trauma don't go well together.. well sometimes but not usually
Peace out. I may direct message each of you tomorrow if you are cool with it. Quad flight already hooked me up with my edgerouter x which I love.
slow night for the newbie questions.. someone decide to give @scenic radish a break?
He snuck off to the local gas station to pick up some natty light
He was pinching random stuff earlier
When your tests pass the first time
then you're doig it wrong
anyone else agrees that hijacking control+F on hassio's forums is absolutely criminal?
TDD should always fail up front ๐
@midnight adder Press Ctrl-F then Ctrl-F again.
well.. thanks I guess, let me try it

I love that often when I order stuff from the US it arrives faster than if I order it from my own country
where do you live?
Norway
we US people are all about pawning our "junk" on others quickly
Finland here
I'm hoping to find some good pawn shops when flying to the us next month ๐
Looking for for music equipment and instruments
we have no shortage of those
just be careful cause you may find yourself surrounded by more chinese knockoffs then you can throw a stick at
mine magama, tola
Thankfully I'm well versed and looking for older stuff
not sure where your flying into but if it's west coast you may find some pretty decent stuff
amazon.com is now aliexpress witht fast shipping anyway
european countries postal services are gonna start "taxing" packages coming from outside EU
it's all about china, they have gamed the system well. think americans will do the same.
because countries themselves are paying china to pay these packages right now
coming next month in Finland - 3 eur addition per package
srs?
what is srs?
seriously
yeah, seriously
i'm from estland, they've been talking about the same for long, but most likely they just follow whatever other countries do in EU
what is estland? estonia?
yes
@forest edge Atlanta area
@midnight adder they don't do it in Norway until April 1st
china doesn't want to get rid of the "developing countries" title that guarantees them cheap parels
but basically your local/national postal service pays for the service, but it was meant for letters originally
so poor countries are not left out
But the text is pretty vague, so I'm not sure packs from China will be affected anyway
I need a subwoofer
I'm thinking second hand may be better value
Need more doof doof for my pew pews on the TV
I removed my subwoofer after getting a bigger center
Got the tones I needed in my 5.0 setup
ikea symfonisk (sonos) speakers tuned with trueplay , appletv sends sound to them directly via airplay - absolutely no need for subwoofer
i got 5 of them in the house now, another 3-4 coming next week
Did you see the symfonisk hack @midnight adder ? Considered it for my second living room ๐
yeah, i've seen it - interesting but i don't have any old bi-amped speakers
the bookshelf ones sound fantastic, don't let the online snobs fool you
it's not worth hacking a speaker that has a crossover
i.e. mono-amped speaker
sonos are bi-amped because they have a software "crossover" (TruePlay)
ew not even 2FA can keep us secure!
@forest edge then we go MFA
i think the next step up is 2.1FA ๐คฃ
yeah bi-amping a speaker makes a huge difference
does you HA say you are in Utah?
anyone an electrical engineer ?
i got a question im hoping someone can answer
feel free to ask, if someone can answer they will!
would you happen to know if you can run a 2 awg cable from a battery to a 200 amp circuit breaker to a 2000w inverter with a short cable of 30 centimeters on both sides? or is the cable size too small ?
mmmm iirc (and i probably don't) 2 awg is generally about 600v max right?
That sounds like a good #general-archived question though
not too sure
yeah looking up 2awg cables looks like most max out at 600v
with your numbers there, you're along the lines of 2000v
2000w is roughly 16amps
more curious why
its for a solar setup
I'm confungled at picturing what your doing
wait, p=i*v right?
is the inverter a 220?
220 v?
2000W Pure Sinewave Power Inverter By GenPower. This Inverter Is Perfect For Running Equipments Such As Computers, Phones & TVs. Shop Inverters At Edisons
thats the inverter
yea in the us we say 220 not 240 lol
argh ok yeah 240v
is the cable ok to be used from battery to circuit breaker at 2 gauge ?
when its a short 30 centimeter length
as long as it can handle 16+ amps it should
in europe we don't have 220 or 240 - those are min-max - in practice, take a multimeter to a socket and you'll see it fluctuates between 225-235 mostly
wire is diffrent between countries so i couldn't tell you if 2awg is the same as what i know
awg = american wire gague
i'm aware
in europe we don't use american guage numbers - we use millimeter square (mm2)
it's diffrent ifg it's chinese made, yes
awg is only a standard in usa
really? that seems weird to me
sorry ?
no i meant @ podz
yes the wire should be fine
that AWG, literally entitled AMERICAN is only a standards IN america
like.. is an inch different over there too? ๐คฃ
out of country made AWG is not the same regardless if it's printed as awg or not
I've dealt with plenty of it to know lol
i mean MADE differently sure... i can get that
made with chinese inches
sorry still not sure if its ok or not ?
hhahaha
its states rated at 150amps, but i thought with short runs it can handle more than it states
the amps of the breaker is irrelevant, what your looking for is the draw of the inventer which is around 16-17amps thus the wire you need to connect the two needs to be be able to handle that which even 12awg can do just out of spec
so anything below say a 10awg would work technically
this is 240 so double leads
both the same size
wire size to handle 16 amps at 230v is half the size of what is needed to handle 16 amps at 115v
ok, just weird why they say you need really thick wire to connect to it
that's why we use 230v - less copper required
oh but its at 12v
its from a 12v battery
before you kill yourself lemme reread the inverter, i'm half asleep sooo
ok yea as long as your output lines are beefy you'll be fine
well its 2 awg
now you can go too big and have negative effects as well but as short of run your doing it shouldn't be an issue
it will get hot before it melts yes, and smoke
but your pushing 16-17amps which like i said even 12awg can handle out of spec
ohhh
crap
haha
166amps my big bad
hey i said i was half asleep
I need a few extra ticks to catch up
yea distance makes a huge diffrence
i think i will just pay for the other cable
just annoying as it cost $40 for the 2 x 1 meter cable which i no longer need
@steel urchin believe it or not, we don't use awg or inches over here ๐
haha i know.. i just was caught off guard at the "AWG is only a standard in US"... i mean, we don't use metric, but a centimeter is a centimeter
but, quality standards are different than units of measurement, which i think is the point they were making
the inverter likely dosen't actually output 166amps
I would go with a step higher guage wire to be safe
yeah its mainly for a fridge and tv
but i seriously doubt it outputs 166amp
but again it has to DRAW that to pull that
you have to have something on the other end pulling it's max
cheers for the help
yea, sorry for almost catching your hair on fire
if it was just a fridge and tv you would havve been fine moet likely tho
yeah but i prob just buy it so nothing gets hurt
well i gtg to the store
thanks again
yup
@clear ferry you guys just use solid metal rods don't you? like an inch thick to power the toaster lol jk
i'm actually kidn of jealous of australians
Superior 240v here
@forest edge nah, we just use mm for everything
that wouldn't bother me, most stuff I deal with these days are in mm anyways
I just wish I could get my hands on some of the crap that's available to you guys
seems like every time i find something i like it's some Australian based company with no conversion options or worse the conversion makes the price tag go dumb
No idea about Aussie stuff, all I know is they hate tourism, it's illegal to do anything in your own house, except the three sockets that are certified, and you can't bring any food to Australia, and it's hot
lol
My father worked at the airport, they always had both mm and inches tools because they had us snow clearing vehicles, practical when I had mm bolts that were worn down
i have both imperial and metric tools for everything, here we just need both regardless
the only thing that wasn't really metric referred was measuring things like length, width ect but these days here it's both just like everything else and cm
it be nice if the world used a single standard. would make alot of shit so much cheaper lol
Well, if you guys only would change to metric everybody would run the same ๐
that will likely never happen especially when there is too much money to made not switching lol
at least we can understand metric now, wasn't too long ago we Americans would get lost if someone tried to explain the dimensions of something in cm or mm lol
or meters or kilometers ect ect lol
even Km has been on our speedometers for decades many didn't know wtf it was lol
and that's only thx to canada
they still freaking out over at the wyze forums?
Dunno, this was new to me, sorry of it's old news
that has been getting updated as it unfolds so parts of that is still new
Lol wyze ๐คข

Anyone have suggestions for some kind of led light for under cabinets. I won't have access to power outlet so would have to be battery / rechargeable
I built my own gledopto 24v ones
Just installed an outlet by ripping out the existing light
dang atxbyea is flexing
@forest edge slow night indeed.
@green inlet I like bud light dammit @tidal bronze ๐ค

@dull chasm sure blame it on me. ๐
But.. it goes up to 11.
@tidal bronze of course gotta get wife off my back ๐คฃ
11 is the Secret Easter Egg Volume level where it's so loud you can taste the music
@tidal bronze have you done anything where you can continue watching the same show (plex/whatever) in another room
Plex already does that.
well kinda ...it has resume
i know i could do zone out with 3080 but then cant change channel
no .....fancier ....like tell alexa i want to continue watching in master bedroom
yea but then damn wife will want to change channell
Dang Wife wanting to watch TV.
Well nothing you can do if source changes
Get another Plex player and use another AV input
would love it centralized somehow ....
And use HDMI passthrough while off
or have two shields and be able to pass state from one to the other
Modern problems require modern solutions
It sounds like this is still beyond our technology
@dull chasm 2 shields same username for Plex
yea me and quad have been working years to automate
but will the script start the shield and continue same show?
Hmm not really, rather I haven't looked into it. I am not use to sharing at home so have no clue ๐
I am zero help for this project
I watch things on my computer or phone. Mom is the only one who still uses a TV.
and all she does is watch Hallmark movies xD
world problems .... today i am going to work on music ....already got scripts to fire music on in bedroom ....i want to make it sync with living room with voice control
First World Problems are fun.
"My Computer that controls my home is acting up and now I have to touch LIGHT SWITCHES."
If you want to sync main with zone 2 3 4 party mode must be on or things go out of sync
i thought so ...but i dont think we can call that through ha

got onkyo (faking as a musiccast device) it works actually pretty good .....they still want a damn foturne for a 1080
DAMN it son ....you are the shit
where in the world did you find that
Find? Hours of trying ๐
I hear you ..... you as bad ..... Worse than me
Node red also supports but not as clean as this

now i gotta wait on the misses to wake the heck up
I have to say
I'm very grateful for Alexa
it's home automation tech that my mom can figure out
She's very...impatient with most technology
if done right ..she should not have to
They are impatient
That reminds me
I need to rehook my lights upto Alexa/Google Home
Though Mom is still gonna use the light switches I bet
and ruin everything \o/

One day we need to have that smoke together ๐
no doubt ...really need to get my stuff toghter and save up for trip

I live around 20 hours from Atlanta
Nah, that's part of the experience. Could build a robit do the rolling for you though
Is that really... Around? ๐
Hehehe
I live about 4hrs from Atlanta
It's relative I guess, takes 25-30 hours to drive across my country, takes 2 hours to drive across Belgium ๐
Currently further than that though in the DC area ๐
Heh people have driven across the US in less than 30hrs, not legally though ๐
I've heard that some Europeans get confused by how huge America is and will not realize that a "quick trip" is 4+ hours of driving

We in Norway understand distance, the rest of Europe is so-so
@clear ferry you be in NY for few days?
I usually drive 40000km per year, private and work, my friends up north usually drive 10-15 per year and think they have distances ๐
@tidal bronze nah, Atlanta for 2 weeks
That's a lot
24,854.848 Freedom Units
Us avg is 15,000 miles
pets my Google Home Mini
Statue of liberty why not NY @wet pilot
24140.16 kilometers
New York state is Xbox HUGE
@tidal bronze lol just picked a random tourist attraction in NYC
Google Mini says Buffalo is 300+ miles from NYC
Yup
Flights are so cheap who wants to drive
Not uncommon for a European tourist to try to fly into buffalo because the tickets are a lot cheaper
But they're cheaper for a reason
Ooft ๐ฆ
"It's okay kids. We'll go backpacking to New York to see the statue." -one month later-
@tidal bronze getting that damn parse error of found <blank> expected
@dull chasm will pm
So you can cross the US that quickly but definitely illegal
Having a battle with coffee pods give me a few
Last donut shop
I had been using one of those filter pods for a while where you add your own grounds. But then realized that that was kinda stupid and bought a ninja
Aus is huge
But even more sparsely populated than the US
@hushed basalt Should you not be on fire right now?
Got so used Keurig now ๐ @wet pilot
There's just nothing left to burn on the other coasts?
Yeah, but who cares about Perth?
Automate that too
Filling water is a task been thinking about it.
Buy a commercial Keurig that can take a water line
The looks is a problem. That's what I have at work.
I remember I flirted with the idea of a ultrasonic "Do you have water" sensor
but that involves my banes Batteries and Soldering
@tidal bronze config passes ....had to reverse the quotes
dont know if it works yet ..but that is stupid
Sigh. I need to work on my confidence. It holds me back so much from trying projects or wild ideas.
@wet pilot btw a lot cheaper to fly to the us than internally, I pay $200 for a round trip to almost anywhere on the east coast, but when I tried to book a flight from ny to LV it was like $300 round trip
Lame
Dang
My mom got ripped off then
she spent like 800 bucks EACH on a round trip to nashville
Lol
Then again she did wait until the last minute
Us flights are obnoxious
That is insane, I can fly from Norway to Japan with economy plus for 800 freedom units
Round trip
Yeah. That's why I told her "Next time we're driving"
I enjoy flying, I only have 20 ish flights per year though
I only fly once or twice a year
Most I've had is 30 in a year
I'm looking to pick up a pilots license at some point though
Family of three it ends up being cheaper to fly and about the same speed once you factor out security
Until you start going coast to coast at least
@tidal bronze anything on avr i have to set ....it does nothing
@wet pilot you should go to Greece
Perth to Paris was $1200 dolleroos
On cattle class economy, Cathay Pacific
Heh only 1 kid and it'll stay that way
Was reasonably comfy but I have a foot hammock and a small stature
I flew from Tromsรธ to Auckland NZ once
I hear 787 17 hour direct Perth to London is nice...in business class
35h total travel time
A cool $10k dollaridinos though
Hello ๐
I have a question. I was going to write my own app but I've been sent here. Ultimately I want to have voice authentication / role permissions based on voice input (voice recognition) and @
also by device (bluetooth). Is there the ability to authentication users? Kind of like Discords role system at a device level.
I made a reddit post here about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleAssistantDev/comments/egsnd8/custom_home_automation_service/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
When I'm home I intend to install and have a play with HomeAssistant, if what i want is not available/ feasible I will either create my own app or contribute to home assistant to put something of the sort in place.
@tulip sage you need artificial intelligence to do voice authentication and bluetooth tracking is such that you cannot make it reliable (bluetooth low energy devices like apple watch constantly randomise their mac addresses like once per minute or something)
everything is moving to bluetooth low energy (ble)
in order to track them, you need to know the "frequency hopping" key (for example the one that is shared between the iPhone and the Apple Watch).
that said, don't let me discourage you ๐
I had bluetooth_le_tracker enabled and because of my wife's Apple Watch the known_devices.yaml file was 600 entries long after a few hours
it works with fitness trackers and beacon fobs though (like tile)
depends on if they randomise or not (it is up to the implementor)
I think theres a way round that if the phone is paired to the reader - then it gives its real mac
but I don't know how to impliment that on an esp32
when you pair the watch to the phone, the watch generates a hopping key and shares that key with the phone so the phone knows how to time-sequence the current mac address
and no, you cannot extract the key from the phone
thats maybe iwatch/iphone specific - it'd be more like storing pairings for a speaker or headphones; essentially the watch would decide to send its real mac to a client
or phone, if thats what you wanted to detect the presence of
my jbl charge 3 speakers use ble and their mac don't change, but if you are tracking new ble devices then the ones that do mac hopping will fill your disk due to tons of entries in known_devices.yaml
Dang security
apple tvs also do the mac hopping - apple takes privacy pretty seriously
I understand but what I'm saying is if your apple device has been paired to a device then it sends its real mac. So if you could figure out how to bond your esp32 or whatever you're using it could work
i turned on bluetooth_le_tracker and was eagerly excited to do all sorts of new presence automations - and then the reality hit me - it is not the same as bluetooth
they don't have a real mac
they share the key with the phone, where the key can be used to calculate the current mac at any point in time
ble standard allows you to either 1) use static mac, or 2) use constantly changing mac
which standard?
5.0 iirc
might even be 4.1
So 4.1 isn't BLE so its not that
"Everything Iโve described about Bluetooth Smart privacy so far has been in place since the first release of Bluetooth Smart in version 4.0 of the core specification. So, what changed in 4.2?
In general, those random, private MAC addresses change according to a timer that the manufacturer implements in their productโs firmware. As such, they know exactly how often the MAC address will change. But thereโs one special situation designed to make it possible for devices that have previously connected with each other to reconnect really quickly, where that timer is not used."
im investigating utilizing old adt security system sensors with esp8266 and tasmota in home assistant. i at one time i had seen some posts regarding interfacing old security systems, but now i cannot find. anyone know any links where i can get some more info
"Also note that a bonded device is capable to resolving the random MAC to the permanent (public) MAC."
from your first link
yeah, the second link explains it much better - but summa summarium is that you and I won't be able to defeat it
Anything I can get on Amazon to improve my smart home experience with a raspberry pi? Got some credit I need to burn
@hidden cradle get yourself a Conbee 2 USB dongle (it's a zigbee gateway)
Got one of them
Sensors, there's always room for more sensors ๐
get yourself a second one ๐ if the first one dies, you don't want to wait a few weeks for the replacement to arrive.
ok, stupid automation test (still learning) - I use turn on a light in my studio and a text-to-speech message is played through the sonos speakers in the dining room - it works!
Should I get something to run the Pi from a hdd?
@midnight adder but GoogleHome now supports voice verification? Like giving custom responses depending on the user invocating a command. Is this information not accessible via skills?
Not exposed outside of their platform
Home Assistant, for example, doesn't even get to know which Google Home was involved
Interesting stuff around the bluetooth, i had an idea of implementing motorised bluetooth locks for cupboards based on bluetooth proximity of either watch or phone.. may be a bit more difficult than I thought. Thanks for heads up will have to do more research around this.
Proximity is really hard with any RF that has range
@clever mortar ahh thats a bummer. Would have thought the device id may have been exposed through the request..
You can get the same signal strength at significantly different distances, due to reflections/interference/or just the signal being absorbed
Are there other technologies that will better suit this or better to fob off the bluetooth aspect and just control it all by an app/ voice control?
My next automation test will be that when my Weber iGrill 2 reaches it's target temperature for my tomahawk steak, all the speakers in my house start playing Sweet Home Alabama
Well, it really depends on your ultimate goals, but NFC is designed for "near"
I seen rfid sensors as a thing already on locks but I want a seamless experience where I don't have to say pull out a card and hold it up to the cupboard
If you can accept false unlocks, Bluetooth is fine
You may just need to spend a lot of time tuning the thresholds, and maybe building in logic with other sensors scattered around so you can locate the device with a moderate degree of accuracy
If you can accurately map that, and build logic to avoid "jumping" locations, it should work
I'll have to get a pi and try it out a few things. I guess the ultimate goal is to prevent people wanting to unlock cupboards they shouldn't be in like kids accessing cleaning products.. so the proximity/ false unlock is probably not a big issue providing it doesn't jump across rooms.
nfc can be used to work over several meters, but then its neither small nor cheap ;). We use it at work to control the vehicle gates and it works very well
It might be simpler to use a combination of basic presence detection (are you home) and voice control (okay Google, unlock the cleaning cupboard)
Doesn't matter if they can say the phrase if you're not home ๐
SO i have no clue who made KNX for HA
But i used his knowledge to create this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFSdCtkzI5U
@Fredrick interesting, i thought nfc was pretty much point to point contact (like bus passes). Can nfc pass through surfaces like wooden doors?
@clever mortar maybe a good alternate solution, I'll have to rethink my idea. I'm a bit bummed about Google's ability to share device and user info with actions.
You could always petition Google for a change ๐คฃ
wood should work, it all boils down to how sensitive/powerful the reader is, and the size/energy of the coil
(is coil the correct name btw), dunno
The traditional solution for this kind of thing involved a magnet and a "hidden" lock inside the cupboard
Getting NFC to work through a standard cupboard door should be quite do-able
Worst case you have to thin the door a bit at that spot ๐
Or, don't do it there, build the reader somewhere more convenient
Yeah I've seen that, pretty much what I'm going for without the need to explicitly hold something up to the door.
Place phone on kitchen counter at key location, cupboard unlocks
Key thing IMO is to focus on the goal, not the solution you've got in your head
Yeah sure, that was just the original solution I thought out without knowing too much about restrictions.
yah that is very true
There's easily a few dozen ways of cracking this, with the level of effort being directly linked to how seamless it becomes
Speaking with you guys has given me some perspective. Thanks alot, really appreciate the guidance.
No worries, there's lots of folks here with widely ranging experience and knowledge
Hell, that KNX setup that @fading zodiac posted is just fantastic ๐
yes that was cool, school seems to have changed a lot since my time ๐
@tinkers
@clever mortar its my classroom:)
Has 8 Homelynks, Eldoled drivers on all LED
all lights/curtains are KNX controlled
I wish school was like that when I went.. IT lessons were just learning how to use word and powerpoint ๐ญ now kids are coding!! So much more fun.
u had word ....
even the buildings automation (the curtains outside) are takenover xd
Hey, IT lessons when I was at school started with unpacking the computers and setting them up ๐
I placed a explanation in there
KNX is a pain for us students tho, as they do not provide any educational version of ETS4
or ETS at all
You should post it at https://community.home-assistant.io/c/projects
Haha @Fedrik I'm not that old ๐ i only just missed out by a couple of years the change to make coding part of the syllabus
we got Homeys too
@clever mortar this is a bummer: https://i.imgur.com/uYr5WD5.png
Should be able to add it yourself
via the handy plus button in your sc
Well, when you're done, I can tag it
Hey all, Youtube Video I am currently doing a Minor Home Automation and this is our class room , fully KNX enabled. I took it further and added HomeAssistant to control KNX. (HASSIO on a RPI). The video above is what i created using KNX and Home Assistant. Each workbench h...
I didnt do it
I can't add it for some reason

Did someone mention long range NFC?
I remember I flirted with putting NFC tags on my various medications to keep track of when I took them and such
but literally having to touch the tag to the glass/plastic back of my phone was a bit of a pain.
I think that's called RF ๐
@valid halo pressure plates and WiFi mqtt
OWO

Or even

250 bucks
daaang
-clunk- "I got my pill box" "Jeeze what do you take? Half the pharmacy?"
in seriousness. Thank you for the links. You put in effort for me โค๏ธ

my house bitches at me until I take my Flonase and notify it by pressing a dash button
I'll have to change that soon since Amazon's bricking dash buttons on the 31st
Xiaomi 4 lyfe
starting at 8 AM it checks a boolean every 15 minutes
I can see my future "Please Take your Simbrinza" -repeats for five minutes straight at max volume- "ALEXA SHUT UP!" -takes eye drop and SLAMS Xiaomi button-
and if the boolean is false it says "don't forget to take your flonase"
pressing the button flips the boolean
I'm gonna have to set up 9 booleans then
Zigbee2MQTT is the way to go @valid halo ๐
Thanks Tinkerer
I need to remember to RTFM (Read Tinkerer's Friendly Messages)
Zigbee2MQTT looks pretty affordable with Aliexpress. Thanks for the tip
I've got an old set of XBee radios
I could probably set something up with that
looks like yes so long as it supports new firmware
might try messing with that this week
it's unfortunate there's nothing the same form factor as the dash buttons
Dang Dash Buttons
I remember someone used a Dash Button setup to get a Tablet to play some random media for his impaired child
and now that's gonna broke
Looking to increase storage space and the only other place I can think of is my laundry "room." It's about 6' x 6' (~1.8m x 1.8m). Thoughts? The space between the wire shelf above the washer and dryer is about 2' (0.6 m)
Also pay no attention to the incomplete patch job on the back wall
get some front loaders and stack them
then you get the width of the washer back and you can build in some nice shelving
Thought about that but that's unfortunately out of my price range (unless I could sell these ones) and I really like these ones lol
Tbh that's probably the only option
Top loaded stuff was pretty cool in Norway in the 70s
Haven't seen any installed since ๐
you could probably sell those
wait for the memorial/presidents day or something, appliances usually go on sale around then
So much about washers and dryers I need to check the state of mine. It's been awhile
I stacked my stuff and then got some IKEA wardrobe frames that are 86" tall
works great
if anyone's got a Costco membership and is looking for a robo vacuum, they've got probably the best robovac on sale right now for $799 - Deebot 960
$200 off
They're pretty decent Maytags, I bet I could get a good amount for them
The previous owners didn't joke around with appliances
Thankful for that
In a condo that cost less than $90K I can't complain
I think I'm going to get Miele stuff when my Whirlpools decide they don't want to go any more
thought it was almost time for that last year but I ended up just having to replace the motor controller on the washer
Just upgraded my s5 and added a s6, keeping it roborock @last dirge
S6 pretty silent compared to s5 but I think the roller torque sensor is little too high.
The s6 was 200 off as well on Amazon
I think it was 449
Mopping is ok nothing great.
Map coordinates were spot on s5/s6 just change entity ID๐
Any suggestions on 22u wall mount racks?
sounds like a lot of weight
I got a swing out one from ebay a long time ago
I think this is it
swing out would be excellent.
I think this would do ๐ https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/ele/d/sherman-oaks-standing-server-rack/7045012845.html
it's a little too flexible to be swing-out
I've got a 72u Netshelter
hasn't had anything running in it for a while
there's stuff in it, it was just too damn expensive to run
Just had to buy an 8 port switch since I now have a sixth wired device. Would have gone bigger but I figured I can always daisy chain the 5 port to the 8 port if I need to at some point
get a 24 port ๐
The 6 inch patch cable I have will be perfect for that lol
call it a day
Eh, I have a pretty small setup right now. Tempting to get a 24 port tho
Don't have much network gear mostly AV. Trying to keep it pretty simple now
I have a bunch of wired stuff
I put 4 drops behind my home theater setup
and I ran out quick
Me too that will always be the case.
so there's a WAP with a switch that's serving extra stuff
48 port poe unifi covers most of it now
drop a fiber line and put in a dedicated switch ๐
everything I've got is gigE
200 down here, good enough for me
Wouldn't mind a boost though
Anything over ~330 and I'd need a new modem though
My friends have like 75 down... Poor bastards
10G fiber internal backhaul to your main switch. will prevent contention on that node
each port might be 1G but its gets squashed down to 1G to the next switch if you have multiple devices trying to use it at the same time
I need to figure out which settings on my edgerouter to tweak
391 down 56 up right now
The "go faster" setting should be ON
Lemme know if you want my "buy me a coffee" link
Might as well download more RAM too
People obviously don't know that video is a joke @light trout lmao
Based on the votes
When your dryer breaks, and you get up this am, take it all apart looking for something obvious, find nothing, clean it and put everything back together and it works ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
You know, that $20 dryer parts kit is worth it every few years
New belt, rollers, etc
dryers can get finikey if they're not clean
I talked to it while I was doing it.
especially if the sensors get gummed up
its worth it to clean the hose out every couple of years too
*every year
Hmm....I just vacuumed out all the lint inside. Nothing special.
@scenic radish true, but lets be real, who does it every year ๐
Also, check your outside vent grate
some don't do it ever
Sounds like the previous owners of my place
Found an american football sized chunk of lint in mine upon move-in
The duct was also disconnected behind the fucking wall
That was a fun discovery
There was some neat stuff in the lip off the front panel....money, nails, shell casings, a hair band, an old band aid.
@green inlet I thought you already tried the vacuum fix last night ๐
lint/dust could have been shorting it out
I really didnโt vacuum it. Just like dusted it. I think it was pulling all the connections off and putting them back on
And I caressed it awkwardly for about 15 minutes
spoke some sweet nothings
Yep that should do it.
sometimes a lil sweet sweet careless whispers make all the difference
insert sexy saxophone music
You punched and kicked it yesterday, looks like it does not like aggressive behavior
should have led with the carrot
Before I put it back together, told the wife, โbarring the miracle of me just putting it back together and it working, we need to call a repairman.โ
It was definitely welcomed. Hopefully it keeps going.
Lmao.....later tonight, when she isnโt expecting it, one last mule kick just to put her in her place
lol someone will call APS on you. Appliance Protective Services
beep for 1m if you need help
Those locks
heh
sexy saxman saxograms FTW
got my router in the DMZ, speeds are up
forwarding isn't working though
Forwarding, DMZ

can't believe I kept pasting 16amps last night to that guy lol
Is there an appropriate place/channel for me to mention I've got some IoT devices I'm looking to part with?
#head on over to lounge would seem like your best bet
Ummm
Forum is probably best
was a joke i know we're there
You sure?
@light trout Thank you for the suggestion
Yeah forum would be best. It'd just get buried here in like 5 seconds lol
just draggin alittle, i'll be alright
I understood your joke, don't worry
@clever mortar got pivpn set up on my pi 4 with Tasker auto connecting and disconnecting ๐
but what if I was interested in purchase and too lazy to go to forum? he could have sold them right here and now
It was E Z P Z
lemon squeezy
Hi, does any one here have experience with Tuya products?
If you search, you'll see that mentioned a fair bit
If you've a specific device type, please ask more detailed questions in the relevant channel ๐
Ah great, I did ask a while back but got no reply
Lack of reply may mean nobody who saw it has an answer
The forum is usually better for that kind of question
PiVPN is so friggin cool
Except my router is retarded and assigned the new pi a second IP address despite setting a static IP on the pi the same way I did on the other pi
"fixed" it by setting a DHCP reservation for the IP I set statically lol
lol
All static IPs are outside the DHCP pool of course
sure it's not your RPi that's retarded?
Router wouldn't shouldn't send a DHCP response if RPi didn't request an address
