RCON protocol

#

everything points to "it should be working"

#

i can access from another system on the LAN just fine, that's the part that's REALLY screwing with me

#

it's like a route is messed up, but i don't see anything jumping out at me

#

and i literally installed windows today in this vm and updated, windows defender a/v and firewall disabled completely...

wet pilot
#

that was a joke, but you didn't get it

steel urchin
#

you told it wrong 😛

peak cloud
#

@steel urchin Nope, I’m pretty sure he told it just right. I’m glad you got it the second time, though!

I do love how he turned the explanation into another joke, that one had me rollin’.

steel urchin
#

as a network kernel writer i disagree 😛

peak cloud
#

Oh, is that so?

#

Please elaborate 😁

steel urchin
#

well the joke goes "I'd tell you a UDP joke, but i'm not sure you'd get it"

#

he just said "UDP?" during a valid network issue, which wasn't very "jokey"

peak cloud
#

So wait, a joke can only be told one way?! mind blown

steel urchin
#

if you want it told right, yes

#

it's called "delivery"

#

but, don't ask the USPS about that

#

(that's how it's done)

peak cloud
#

Which I fail very miserably at, every single time.

#

So you’re saying I should try to get a job at USPS. Got it!

steel urchin
#

so you're sayin you're the digornio of jokes? cuz it's not DELIVERY!?!?!

#

lol ok that was a stretch

peak cloud
#

(In the Mario voice) Is’a me, DiGiorno!

steel urchin
#

so... new bulbs = 👌

peak cloud
#

But seriously, you gotta hand it to him. His explanation was a joke in and of itself. And that made it super stellar.

brave panther
steel urchin
#

hehe yeah, i'll give it to him 😛

peak cloud
#

@brave panther you hurt yourself again?!!! STOP HURTING YOURSELF BY DOING THINGS!!!

brave panther
#

Got SICK of the inability to flash older firmware, so I compiled a firmware with version 0xFFFFFFFF (255.255.255.255) and minimum version 0x00000000 (0.0.0.0) so I can flash whatever I want.

steel urchin
#

hax

brave panther
#

Ikr 🙂

#

I "accidentally" overwrote two of my dimmers with Tasmota 7.2.-something and couldn't flash back to tasmota-7.0.0.5-digiDIMv8

#

so they stopped working, and people were unpleased.

peak cloud
#

I have never been a big tasmota guy 🤷🏻‍♂️

brave panther
#

better than a lot of the offerings i guess.

#

MQTT is nice.

#

I have them in "works even if MQTT dies" mode.

peak cloud
#

The fallback I had with it was trying to use it in a closed/offline environment, one where I did not want to deploy a broker.

brave panther
#

Twas pretty easy to do this too, it's great how easy Theo made it even for fools like myself to compile a bin.

#

(to be honest, now that I have what I came for, I'll likely never touch Atom or the source again, until I need to update it to fix a bug or something) 😄

peak cloud
#

I ran Tasmota on a Sonoff 4CH Pro R2 for my Jeep, but wanted to be able to control it directly (ad-hoc) with a Nextion. 👎🏻

brave panther
#

Ahh. Can you do that without Tasmota?

#

(ie the stock firmware)

peak cloud
#

Whew, glad you’ve vowed to never touching atom again! VS Code is where it’s at, my friend!

brave panther
#

Lol.

#

Atom actually suggested for me to use the VSCode integration

peak cloud
#

No, the stock 4CH firmware requires internet, and as far as I know, is still a closed firmware.

brave panther
#

something along the lines of "users report it works..."

#

Gotcha. Yes, it's still very much closed source.

#

Even closed-release, ie "oops I accidentally" and they won't give you the bin.

peak cloud
#

But now that ESPHome is a thing, my life is wonderful!

brave panther
#

It's on the internet though, I linked it in my iot-santa Github.

#

Anywho yeah, that's great. Got my dimmers working, remotely even (over VPN, using a camera to confirm it), off to toy with WLED and xLights 🙂

#

Only 1 year to go!

peak cloud
#

I run ESPHome directly on the 4Ch’s ESP, and since it supports Nextion displays, I no longer need an additional Wemos D1 to bridge the two.

brave panther
#

Nice!

peak cloud
#

ESPHome is love. ESPHome is life.

#

Until it comes to driving WS281X LEDs...then: WLED is love. WLED is life.

brave panther
#

I'm actually going to be using one of the 4-channel relays to control 3 garage doors soon. then I'll wire the already-wired doorbell buttons to the output of the relays to retain the physical control over them.

peak cloud
#

As long as you don’t have “Security 2.0” garage door openers, that should be fine.

brave panther
#

Lmao the marketing is strong with garage door openers these days.

peak cloud
#

(It’s a Chamberlain line of things)

brave panther
#

Was actually planning on getting a couple new universal remotes as a couple of the old ones are ... old

#

and yeah it's just silly.

peak cloud
#

Seriously, Security 2.0 locks you into their own remotes. Myq is the only smart opener that I know of that works with it.

#

I’m not sure if the 4CH has 3 inputs that are usable/accessible for sensors — might be something you want to look into.

brave panther
#

i won't be replacing any of the garage door openers themselves or the control units but just the remotes and buttons to open them, for now at least. haven't looked into what the old one is and if i need to be concerned (clear-text, not-encrypted codes, etc) but maybe in the future. would like to get a radio and see if i can sniff out the codes OTA.

#

Well I'm just using them to close the circuit to open or close the door. Have magnetic sensors to detect open/close already.

#

MQTT of course 😄

peak cloud
#

Well, before Sec20 you could just short the terminals and it would open/close, so encryption is no big deal there.

#

And if you ever do end up sniffing the codes, they are rolling codes. Most likey 315MHz or 433MHz.

#

Rolling codes require a second “engagement” to pair.

brave panther
#

yeah pretty sure we have to use two remotes to pair a third, hold them for like 10 seconds or something. been awhile.

peak cloud
#

And once it’s paired, a remote has approximately 200 presses to get a valid signal back from the opener in order to stay paired.

#

By second engagement I meant that the remote has to send it’s signal twice, not necessarily a second remote.

#

Car keyless entry systems work very similar, but with more security. They are rolling codes as well. If you ever want to mess with a friend and lock them out of their car, you can grab their car remote and press the button 200+ times to “unsync” the remote from their vehicle.

brave panther
#

lmao. you obviously know a lot more than i do about this. guessing you've had your own adventures?

peak cloud
#

With garage door openers, yes. Keyless entry systems, no. It’s just the knowledge I gain from research. Haha.

midnight adder
#

If you ever want to mess with a friend and lock them out of their car, you can grab their car remote and press the button 200+ times to “unsync” the remote from their vehicle
please don't share this with my friends

peak cloud
#

Well, I hope your friends aren’t lurking in this channel then 😂

clever mortar
#

If you can grab somebody's remote, there are more creative ways of messing with them, not including cans of fish

#

My favourite trick if you can reliably get repeated access is to adjust mirrors (and optionally the seat) to make it seem like they're growing/shrinking/leaning

#

tiny little changes, not enough to be obvious, just enough to mess with people 😛

peak cloud
#

Oh man, I would know instantly if someone messed with my seat or mirrors.

clever mortar
#

Not if you make the change small enough 😉

brave panther
#

Move the seat in their car three inches forward.

peak cloud
#

Those are four of five things you don’t touch in my Jeep.

clever mortar
#

I'm not speaking from experience of messing with somebody, you understand 😉

brave panther
#

😇

peak cloud
#

I know to the inch where my mirrors line up. If my seat is adjusted, all three mirrors are off. Unless you’re able to adjust all three mirrors and the seat in just the right way, I may not notice. But good luck with that!

#

(My mirrors are adjusted to see specific things on the vehicle, in specific ways)

#

Scratch that...five mirrors. I have two “blind spot” mirrors, and those are what some kids messed with last time.

brave panther
#

Some epic Photoshop there. 🙂

#

That's my idea. Basically just doing the same thing we're doing, but putting a Sonoff 4-channel behind the buttons to act as another switch.

peak cloud
#

You sure that wasn’t paint from Win98 SE? 😂

brave panther
peak cloud
#

Even when trying to override the garage door buttons, it’s necessary to have sensor input of the door position. And please, for the love of safety and other humans around you, make sure your garage doors have safety sensors.

brave panther
#

They do, that's the orange leads.

#

One of which I need to replace, as it shorts out (bad wire job from previous owner..)

#

It shorts out safe, though, as in it trips unnecessarily

#

So I destroyed a device today...

#

Lost connectivity for a blip of a second unfortunately while flashing an OTA update and couldn't reconnect...

#

Tore it apart only to find that there was no way to get to the chip's pins, as they soldered a damn shield over it. 😐

peak cloud
#

So then unsolder the shield?

brave panther
#

debating if it's even worth the time to undo that, or just toss it and buy two more for $28...

#

I was surprised they actually worked in the first place, but they're actually pretty solid devices. Two ports, and power monitoring.

#

I made a template for them and sprinkled them around the house.

peak cloud
#

You may try taking a multimeter and seeing what the tabs are underneath before doing that, though.

#

Have a pic of the underside of the PCB?

brave panther
#

"Alexa, turn on the space heater."
"Okay."
"And turn on the heated blanket."
"Okay."
15A, yes please.

#

ummm

peak cloud
#

Majority of the time the correct pins are exposed via PCB.

brave panther
#

yeah. problem is the gross abundance of crap in the way too 🙂

peak cloud
#

Touché

brave panther
#

and to even get the board off the plastic, have to unsolder the line, neutral, and earth pins. they really engineered these to be not-user-friendly.

#

bottom of the board is just leads and couple vias. nothing interesting.

peak cloud
#

In that case, it does seem much easier to remove the shield and flash the chip directly then.

#

A handful of solid 28awg wires, some solder, a soldering iron, and a USB/TTL adapter and you’re back in business.

steel urchin

ah well that's my fault 😛

wet pilot

Meh, I use a nginx container for ingress

hexed magnet
#

That's true you can do that too; in my case I wanted to also host a PiHole which kind of needs its own address

hexed magnet
#

Can anyone recommend a HA compatible sliding glass door lock? Preferably not wifi, like zwave/zigbee?

Actually I don't even really care that much about being able to lock it, I just want to know whether it's locked or not.

wet pilot
#

Dunno about locked, you could do open/closed easily enough

steel urchin
#

scenic radish
#

Don't let @clear ferry hear you say windows

#

Oh shit

steel urchin
#

i mean anyone that hates on an OS doesn't understand them

#

almost every OS has it's place

#

but i'm looking for specific help with networking to a win10 app.. i think i found the culprit of my issue but not sure what i'm doing when it comes to win10 apps

hexed magnet
#

@wet pilot Yeah, open closed would be pretty easy, might even be smarter to just leave the sliding glass door open and have it be alarmed when we're not home

#

At least then a burglar wouldn't break the glass

wet pilot
#

Yeah, locks don't really matter for a motivated criminal

hexed magnet
#

I guess I'm torn on the idea of whether someone would check the back door, then give up

#

Maybe if they saw the cameras and an alarm sticker, but I feel like yeah they'll just break the glass

peak cloud
#

@steel urchin I am hoping with the latest sign-on stuff in Home Assistant that we might be able to somehow get myq officially supported, similar to how Amazon Key is.

steel urchin
#

is that like a partnership or something?

#

or that there's a 'sign on' integration point in HA now?

peak cloud
#

That there is a “sign on” integration point in HA now. But I’m pretty sure myq won’t go for it, lol.

steel urchin
#

assuming you mean like an oauth provider or something similar..

#

with the convos i've had with myq, they aren't very tech savvy

#

their solution to my issue was to replace the controller board inside the unit

#

rather than fix a database issue

#

they weren't aware they had many many thousands of serial numbers associated with alarm.com's single user, either...

hushed basalt
#

@hexed magnet you could attach a small strong magnet to the lock lever

#

And put a reed switch near it

peak cloud
#

Ugh. Being Santa is so stressful, especially when the kids won’t go to sleep!!!

i set group 2 up and when i turned the switch on it turned on the associated device

Honestly no tips really. It's not difficult, just a bit time consuming. You'll probably want to get a pin 27 breakout if you don't have one, else you're gonna have to cut into the ribbon cable and do some wire splicing and joining. So I guess that's a tip. 🙂

So I have a couple of the insignia smart plugs that now no longer work after Best buy killed their smart home platform. However, I noticed when you connect to the SSID they broadcast that there's a captive portal at 192.168.0.1. I can connect it to my network, but then it tries to connect to the cloud and obviously fails. It then complains and disconnects from the network. I'm thinking I could use Wireshark to find what URL it's trying to reach and create a DNS entry that resolves to something else on my network to see if it will accept that as connected.

#

Is this dumb? I don't even care about the plugs, I'm just having fun messing around lol

wet pilot
#

Might be worth opening one up to see what the hardware is

scenic radish
#

I can definitely do that. I read somewhere that it's not an ESP unfortunately, but I'm not sure if they cracked one open or just looked at the FCC docs

#

They're HomeKit compatible and I could connect them to HomeKit Python at one point, but not anymore since it drops the connection after failing to connect to the cloud

wet pilot
#

Bestbuy likely used someone else's hardware to make these

scenic radish
#

Oh yeah I'm sure they did. Guess I'll have to take a look

#

My first thought was tuya-convert but not if it's not an ESP

#

Was pleasantly surprised to see a captive portal. I connected to the network, saw the subnet was 192.168.0.x and figured "hell, might as well try 1" lol

my I Fix It Kit came in handy at work today

So fuck him

and um the Anti-Static Strap was nice

I've developed a Pavlovian aversion to touching metal at work from constant static shocks

That's one of those things that you don't really need until you do and you usually find out too late

also sometimes I'll touch laptops and -bzzt-

Yay I got my rpi 4 setup with interface bonding on eth0 + wlan0 and dynamic failover - I wire it to my gateway or I can unplug it and carry it around the house to do zigbee pairings. Connected to an Anker 26800 mAH power bank, it runs for more than a day.

it's like the old trick in the 90's everyone was terrified of where you could read a hard drive remotely via EMF

This reminds me of those "Hackers can use microphones to hack your computer from listening to the fan noise"

wet pilot

That's a good one

scenic radish
#

so yeah, no ESP 😦

wet pilot
#

Lame

proper swift
#

it drops it's IP?

scenic radish
#

yeah after it can't connect to the cloud (since the service is discontinued) it releases its IP

#

then i have to manually reconnect it to the network through the captive portal

#

so it doesn't allow local access without a cloud connection apparently, at least for onboarding

proper swift
#

can you fake a dns for that to point to nothing?

#

well.. or a random web server

#

super lame

scenic radish
#

yeah i was gonna try that next. time for xbox tho lol

proper swift
#

also try nmapping it while you have the ip

flat lintel
#

Wyze May have been breached

scenic radish
#

@proper swift only 80 is open

#

Problem is I can't connect them to the app anymore to sniff the traffic

#

Once I set up a DNS entry to go somewhere else I'll see if it stays connected, and if it does, try to pair it to HomeKit Python

#

No need to try to reverse engineer a local protocol when it already supports one

Nice looking stone though

yeah, gonna lay a few at the fence gate so the dogs can't dig out (they always tend to do that at the fence, and no where else) and use the black bricks with some of that stone to make an area for the wifey to put her planters

A few days ago, it was reported that a Chinese government sponsored hacking group managed to hack 2FA and was actively attempting to break in to numerous institutions. 2-3 days later, Wyze gets "hacked". Maybe I'm a pessimist, but this can't be just a coincidence

wet pilot

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

cloud services

cosmic lily
#

yep. cloud services

#

And now I'm nervous about my Nest and Genie cloud service

wet pilot
#

nest was apparently super insecure, that's why google opted to kill that api

cosmic lily

Wonder if that means I have reason to worry. I'm still using the old API key

wet pilot

prolly

if that key gets out there

I've been good about sequestering my secrets.yaml file
