But high efficiency air source heat pumps should be fine

#

Heating and cooling costs are pretty insane in my house. Because of the crappy building standards

#

I think we spent about $2400 on electricity last year.

scenic radish
#

i'm in a 1000 sq ft condo on the second of three floors. heating is ~$30/month, cooling ~$60 - $80/month

hushed basalt
#

60-70% of that would have been heating/cooling. And that's all heat pump

clever mortar
#

Cooling... in the UK that's called open a window ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

@clever mortar nekminnit heat wave

scenic radish
#

yeah... it's common to hit temps above 32 C here in the summer, so cooling is pretty necessary lol

#

with a high dew point too

#

that's the real killer

hushed basalt
#

Lots of people are going to die in the UK when heat waves become more common

clever mortar
#

I used to live in the South, where 30+ was normal, hated it

#

Up here, 25 is a heat wave ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

Yeah the "you will die without active cooling" dew point is pretty serious

scenic radish
#

they've started building cooling shelters in some places, haven't they?

hushed basalt
#

I don't doubt it

unreal orbit
#

We were hitting 43C regularly this summer

scenic radish
#

110??? goodness

unreal orbit
#

Yup. This was a pretty bad summer

hushed basalt
#

If the UK just used reverse cycle heat pumps in all new construction for the past 20/30 years it would have been a lot better

#

But mah precious boilers :D

clever mortar
#

Using air for heating/cooling is an alien thought here

hushed basalt
#

Today is a good day to be a split ac installer in south UK

clever mortar
#

Radiators are nice, but I'd personally prefer "central air" vs "central heating"

#

Well, maybe not today ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

:D

clever mortar
#

But yeah, if I still lived there I'd likely have had some installed by now

hushed basalt
#

Well you could use the time to network and invest

#

Then come spring, have unlimited work :D

tulip hemlock
#

any idea on daily average KW?

#

in our climate, all electric house, a winter daily average is ~ 76 Kwh

hushed basalt
#

I have ducted heat pump and gas hws

tulip hemlock
#

summer could be 65 on a hot day and 85 in days of back to back hot weather

hushed basalt
#

76 kwh is insane

tulip hemlock
#

$ cost doesn't translate due to unit charging and For-Ex

unreal orbit
#

Daily average? Wow

tulip hemlock
#

Welcome to Australian housing standards of the 80's, no double glazed windows and no wall insulation.

unreal orbit
#

That's closer to my monthly

hushed basalt
#

Plus you easterners have a messed up 'national' energy grid

#

How good is privatisation

scenic radish
#

tbh double-pane windows don't make that much of a difference

hushed basalt
#

It depends @scenic radish

unreal orbit
#

They do here

hushed basalt
#

Insulation value is only half the battle

#

Air tightness is just as importance

tulip hemlock
#

we've got more solar coming, we're expecting to put in another 18 or so 460W panels and when the FiT for our other 16 panels ends, swapping them out for another set of high power panels

hushed basalt
#

And our crappy extruded aluminum 3mm single pane naked glass

#

I would invest more in reducing consumption rather than generation

scenic radish
#

oh don't get me wrong, it makes a difference. but we're talking about an R value of 1 vs maybe 2 with double-pane

tulip hemlock
#

Climate position is one influencer , R value and more importantly U value then come into play

scenic radish
#

and yeah airtightness is definitely important. it's for that reason i'm glad i have casement windows

hushed basalt
#

That's double the efficiency Ted

steel urchin
#

my peak usage in last 12mo averages 69kwh, but doign the math I average 38kwh/day year round

hushed basalt
#

R 1 to R 2

tulip hemlock
#

U value for sun exposed windows in Australia is insane

hushed basalt
#

Urgh don't get me started on our solar design

scenic radish
#

right. i just mean R-2 is still horrendous efficiency in general

tulip hemlock
#

can we hotlink images?

scenic radish
#

compared to a wall at least, but that's not a fair comparison

tulip hemlock
#

new here and don't want to break the rules

steel urchin
velvet horizonBOT
#

@tulip hemlock Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.

scenic radish
#

you're good

steel urchin
#

heh you can tell when summer kicks up in Texas ๐Ÿ˜›

scenic radish
#

but you can also share images directly in lounge

hushed basalt
#

I don't want to think about how much energy our country burns for bad building codes

steel urchin
#

lounge is more lenient, but i'm sure if we go crazy they'll take it away ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

I'll make a bot that posts a picture of a clock every minute

scenic radish
tulip hemlock
hushed basalt
#

Yeah shgc

#

I don't think most builders in Australia even know what that means

steel urchin
#

heh, i mean i have no clue what that means!

hushed basalt
#

I spoke to two "eco house" custom builders

#

And they don't even know what a heat recovery ventilator is

scenic radish
#

๐Ÿคฆ

hushed basalt
#

And they said air tightness just means installing a good seal on the front door

tulip hemlock
hushed basalt
#

SHGC, or Solae Heat Gain Coefficient, is the ratio of solar heat transfer through a window

#

Solar heat radiation is made up of roughly 50% visible light and 50 % infrared,

tulip hemlock
#

exterior shutters can help radiant heat, but do nothing for conductive heat once they're warm

hushed basalt
#

Not quite, but I'll get back to that

tulip hemlock
#

hence why we'll put in double / tripple glazed UPVC

hushed basalt
#

0 is no heat transfer, and 1 is 100%

tulip hemlock
#

exterior roller shutters on all windows as well

hushed basalt
#

On northern windows you want medium/high shgc with external shading. But with good insulation values as well.

#

East and west you want minimal shgc with minimal glazing

#

External shading is the biggest factor in reducing unwanted solar heat

tulip hemlock
#

we've got 0 northern windows in our current house ๐Ÿ˜‰

hushed basalt
#

You want the shade away from the walls and glass a bit. And to be made up of a reflective material. Both visible and IR light reflectiveness.

tulip hemlock
#

so everything is bombarded in summer ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

steel urchin
#

lol had 500mb in updates after installing linux, downloaded in <4 seconds. love having gigabit at the house finally

hushed basalt
#

Lots of east and west windows?

tulip hemlock
#

exterior shading has already been undertaken to help buffer the sun as much as we can, trees also take years to grow, double story garage + living room with raked ceiling and remainder of house on mid split level

#

kitchen on west behind the living room

#

so insulation is restricted in the raked ceiling space ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

welcome to the 80's ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

old house had in wall, and i put in R2.5 underfloor

hushed basalt
#

Yeah your house is costing you a lot :D

tulip hemlock
#

double cell honeycomb most of the windows, they're shit compared to double glazed

#

they still leaked cold air around the lower air gap

#

they improved the winter comfort however

hushed basalt
#

Strategic shade sails?

#

Also you need pelmets

#

You must have pelmets. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

tulip hemlock
#

we've got a deck on the west side with a pitched roof section covering the west kitchen window and sliding door.

#

already got a roller shutter on the kitchen window due to glare

hushed basalt
#

With window dressings you have to break the convection loop

valid halo
#

Sup y'all?

So blocking off the top basically. With pelmets

We're having a discussion about energy efficiency and solar passive design

clear ferry

If you don't want to live downtown the big cities

very affordable

unfortunantly people = shit

#

and want to live downtown

like... my hometown is a little fart in the north, 70000 people, and if they have to travel more than 20 minutes to get to the city it's not interesting ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

so... my sister who lives in the city rents currently, but if she was to buy she would have to pay USD3000 per month roughly to live in the same house

ocean mirage

I would have thought Norway would take steps to control house pricing

steel urchin

yeah, ATX is similar, only avg 2.3x cost.... But you drive 20-30 minutes out cost drops significantly

yeah, norway has to eat all of the bullets, but we get very little in return ๐Ÿคฃ

and that's what UK wants with brexit for some reason ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry

like importing my last car from Germany would have cost USD18000 while the car cost USD3000 there

Anyone have any suggestions on how to gracefully reboot my network with a script? Gateway, Routers, APs, A couple Pis, smart switch. I know that no one can write it for me. Just curious if it is possible. I do a lot of stuff on my network remotely, would be nice to run one script to reboot everything.

What kind of smart light bulbs do you guys like?

So far I just have Hue ones, which are nice but pricey.

I'd like to get more that aren't WiFi.

wet pilot
#

i'm in the dumb bulbs/smart switches route

hexed magnet
#

I've heard people recommend that; it does seem like in some situations it'd be better. I really like color lights and dimming though and I didn't know how well switches could do that

#

Well obviously they can't do color, but dimming

wet pilot
#

dimming is solid if you get quality dumb bulbs

inner vault
#

I do smart bulbs (combo of hue and ikea tradfri) for lamps and smart switches (lutron caseta) for actual fixtures

wet pilot
#

but smart switches lead to higher WAF and GAF (wife and guest acceptability factor)

hexed magnet

Heh, true

#

It's a pain having to remember if the switch is on or off

wet pilot

smart bulbs are only smart until someone cuts the power ๐Ÿ˜›

hexed magnet
#

Yeah exactly, my wife has a habit of turning things off manually

inner vault
#

I'm also working on backing up smart bulbs with physical switches, you can wall mount lutron caseta pico switches as if they were regular switches without needing a box in the wall, and I control zigbee bulbs with them via HA

@scenic radish soooo, never?

#

but yeah it's mostly a novelty

hexed magnet
#

Yeah, still I like it, lol

wet pilot
#

@clear ferry i can kinda see that but still meh

scenic radish
#

i waited for deals on them though, so i got most of my color bulbs for $20-25 each instead of $50

wet pilot
#

nightlight is kinda cool

hexed magnet
#

The hue lights are way overpriced; I paid $35 each at the cheapest

scenic radish
#

keep in mind you're paying for future software updates and probably the most reliable smart bulb ecosystem out there

hexed magnet
#

Also if you entertain, we use them at parties to like fade between green and red for christmas or whatever. Not a highly practical thing though

#

Yeah true, they are very nice

#

It's ruined me for cheaper bulbs, lol

#

And I like the hub, keeps stuff off the wifi and makes granting access super easy

scenic radish
#

although i have an intermittent issue with my setup that's been really annoying

#

randomly one bulb in a room will turn on after the other are already on and will go from 0 to 100% brightness instead of fading in like normal

#

it happens in any room, but i can't figure out a pattern to it

hexed magnet
#

Weird

scenic radish
#

i have custom rules set with the all 4 hue app though, so i might need to try disabling them and go to a stock setup to see if that fixes it

hexed magnet
#

Mrm, yeah that might be.

scenic radish
#

weird thing is i've had those rules for years

hexed magnet
#

The other practical use of color is sometimes I can hand the color wheel to my four year old and he'll entertain himself for ~10 minutes

#

Almost worth the price tag.

#

fiery nebula
#

I was reading about best doorlocks for 2018 but I did not see anything for 2019. Are the Schladge locks the best option?

unreal orbit
#

"best" is subjective. I've been happy with my Kwikset lock

hexed magnet
#

TBH either is probably fine; I developed a preference for Schlage after kwikset had some security issues with some of their lines.

#

The reason I use Schlage now is just because all my locks are schlage and I can rekey the new locks so we use one key for the whole house.

fiery nebula
#

Thank you.

hexed magnet
#

kwikset has a sexy fast rekey feature which is nice

unreal orbit
#

That was one of the main reasons I chose them. Didn't want to rekey

hexed magnet
#

The truth about locks is they all use a key and a burglar probably isn't going to rob you based on your door lock, they make a holistic decision based on multiple factors about your home.

By cost though, my opinion is the best security feature of a house is an overt camera system.

#

I got obsessed with burglaries for a while and that seemed to be a common thread from people interviewed; they didn't like burglaring regular looking houses with camera systems.

#

FWIW the other thing I learned is most burglaries happen in the summer and during the day.

#

@boreal pewter what does R2-D2 have to do with any of this?

#

explain pls

unreal orbit

Update 30% done ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ”ซ

#

@Europeans what's the most American meal that you can think of?

scenic radish
#

gun with a side of gun sauce

unreal orbit
#

I can't order that on Uber Eats :(

scenic radish
#

not with that attitude

clever mortar
#

Burger and "fries"

#

Steak if you're out by Texas

unreal orbit
#

I take offense to your quotation marks

clever mortar
#

Well, they're those stupid thin things

unreal orbit
#

๐Ÿคฃ

scenic radish
#

ah right, apparently they're "chips" in the UK

clever mortar
#

Not actual chips, but the kind of thing you get when you slice a chip into little pieces

#

Oh no, chips != fries

#

(French) fries are skinny things

#

Chips have mass

unreal orbit
#

I think I'll get a burger and chili fries

clever mortar
scenic radish
unreal orbit
#

Seems stereotypical enough

#

Oh, we call those "steak fries"

scenic radish
#

i actually straight-up thought what we call fries are chips in the UK

#

good to know

#

yeah so i guess steak fries == chips

#

also i'm starting to struggle to keep the operators straight between python, SQL, and excel

unreal orbit
#

I don't know what to do with this knowledge, but I feel better knowing it

#

SQL is easy because it's standard practice to scream the operators

#

SELECT

#

WHERE

scenic radish
#

lmao

#

i specifically mean comparison operators

unreal orbit
#

Now I've ruined sql queries for you forever, you're welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

boreal pewter
#

@scenic radish rdr2

scenic radish
#

python/jinja: ==
sql/excel: =

unreal orbit
#

Oh I see, yeah that is annoying

scenic radish
#

python/jinja/sql: !=
excel: <>

wet pilot
#

more like, programming languages are == (=== for js)

scenic radish
#

ffs

boreal pewter
#

RDR2

scenic radish
#

right, R2-D2

unreal orbit
#

Well === is for matching type as well as value

wet pilot
#

is really equal ๐Ÿ˜›

scenic radish
#

there's a === too? ffs

#

how many can we string together?

wet pilot
#

!= works in python but it likes is not better

light trout
#

Looks cleaner too

scenic radish
#

================================

#

i also like is not

#

similarly not is_state*

unreal orbit
#

You humans and your silly "readability"

wet pilot
#

i think python linters will whine if you use !=

light trout
#

They will

scenic radish
#

that's why i use a lint roller

#

Sad!

Classic Windows, begging you to use Edge after it updates ๐Ÿ™„

@sharp scaffold

โค๏ธ proxmox

midnight adder
#

you made me get excited

#

...

#

But I'm worried still

sharp scaffold
#

you can even install proxmox on top of any random existing debian server

#

it will happily manage your kvm and lxc

midnight adder
#

proxmox baremetal?

sharp scaffold
#

no such thing, it's based on debian

midnight adder
#

oh

sharp scaffold
#

that's the downside for pro stuff, you still have to maintain the base system

#

not an issue for home use

midnight adder
#

ouch

#

I'll find me an old computer

#

to test it on

#

before I move to it

sharp scaffold
#

you can install it in a VM on ESXi ๐Ÿ™‚

I really wanted to use ESXi at first, but it wouldn't install on this i3 NUC

try the 6.5

Proxmox๐Ÿคข

sharp scaffold

I'm perfectly happy with proxmox now ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

midnight adder
#

@clear ferry why tho?

clear ferry
#

Because I'm an enterprise engineer who is also three times VMware certified

#

๐Ÿ˜›

clever mortar
#

๐Ÿฟ

#

To be fair, VMWare is way better if you can run it

midnight adder
#

i am running it

clever mortar
#

On the other hand... Proxmox is free

midnight adder
#

but 6.5

clear ferry
#

Esxi is also free

midnight adder

took me 3 weeks of troubleshooting

No home users need the paid features

PEBKAC doesn't make a product bad ๐Ÿ˜›

sharp scaffold
#

does esxi have a web client now?

clear ferry
#

It has only a web client

sharp scaffold
#

that's good, I haven't seen it in a long time

midnight adder
#

yeah well

#

it still is hard

#

to learn

#

I'd still love to get a certification though

clear ferry
#

It is worth learning, because most companies run it

#

Proxmox... Not so much

clever mortar
#

Then again, that's like suggesting folks should run PaloAlto firewalls at home, because companies run them ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

You don't @clever mortar?

#

๐Ÿ˜›

clever mortar
#

sharp scaffold
#

if your hardware supports it, esxi will reduce the support surface for a home appliance

clever mortar
#

I used to run Cisco gear actually

sharp scaffold
#

if you have pfsense on esxi there is nothing to maintain

#

on pfsense you still have a full linux system in there, something can always go wrong

#

then again, I haven't had any issues with the few hosts I set up like that

clever mortar
#

Full linux system ๐Ÿค”

pfSense is an open source firewall/router computer software distribution based on FreeBSD

I have Cisco, Extreme, Procurve, H3C, Nokia and some more in my garage

#

Do I count?

midnight adder

NOKIA

๐Ÿ™‚

proxmox = debian = full linux system

oh, I said pfsense instead of proxmox ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ
