has anyone come across a proper tutorial or doc for Lambdas in esphome ?

scenic radish
mighty summit
#

in the archive ?

scenic radish
#

there's a link to the esphome discord server there

mighty summit
#

yes, where people seem to be veeery silent.

scenic radish
#

oh you posted in the esphome discord. i mean, you just posted that 2 hours ago lol

mighty summit
#

3hours without reaction is about right to look for alternatives, no ? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

scenic radish
#

maybe? asking there is probably the best spot to ask. it's not like people are waiting for questions. either way, it looks like someone posted a link to the ESPHome docs in #general-archived

#

always best to start with the docs first ๐Ÿ˜‰

mighty summit
#

I did start with the docs... and I'm just not finding what I need.

scenic radish
#

what are the cool kids these days using to work with github? i've been doing everything (mainly docs PRs) through chrome, but it's not exactly the fastest way of doing things...

vscode has an integration

#

atom does too

unreal orbit
#

What do you mean? I either edit in Chrome or I just use git

#

git + vscode I suppose is what I actually use

scenic radish
#

didn't know if there's something else with a GUI that works better. deleting multiple files using chrome is a bitch lol

#

So at work we got Gin for Christmas. What about you guys? ๐Ÿ˜„

scenic radish
#

also i'm currently following a beginner's python tutorial. working in IDLE now

unreal orbit
#

I would recommend VS Code for python as well ๐Ÿ™‚

scenic radish
#

i recognize lots of things at the beginning of this tutorial from doing so much work with jinja templating lol

unreal orbit
#

I recommend VS Code for basically everything except things that require specific debugging techniques

#

VS Code has a fair amount of debuggers available, but sometimes you just need an IDE that was made for the language you're using

scenic radish
#

like it's really easy for me to remember the difference between == and = now

unreal orbit
#

Python will be your first programming language?

scenic radish
#

thanks villhellm, we'll see how well vscode works on chrome os lol

#

there's a community build for it

#

it will be, unless BASIC counts lmao

unreal orbit
#

Oh yeah that's right

scenic radish
#

but that was a long time ago. couldn't do anything in BASIC now

#

not that i'd want to

unreal orbit
#

https://github.com/cdr/code-server check out this project if you want to work on a chromebook. You setup a server for VS Code, then you can access it through a browser

scenic radish
#

interesting. python evaluates not first, then and, then or.

#

thanks, i'll take a look. i can install debian packages on my chromebook though, so i might try that first

I worked out my rack costs me around $1500 nzd a year to run

boreal pewter

hushed basalt
#

My 9020 sffs use about 10w each. 3 of them

#

That's on idle

#

I avoid transcoding like the plague though

boreal pewter
#

You should always avoid transcoding for any price just for the sake of quality ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

Indeed

clear ferry
#

my current rack setup probably costs me $AUD 420 per year

hushed basalt
#

Real time transcoding is poo by design

clever mortar
#

@arctic ginkgo There's no, but there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to (and generally speaking they're also announced in #announcements )

hushed basalt
#

ATV 4/4K with infuse has been the best for plex that I've experienced

quartz ether
#

4k transcoding is still terrible and washes out the image. So i close connections if it is transcoded. 1080/720 is fine. I try get x265 so smaller file size.

hushed basalt
#

All plex frontend apps I've come across have been steaming piles of hot garbage

boreal pewter
#

I can even stream 80GB 4k movies just fine. That's neither about size nor bandwidth

#

Transcoding happens when the client is shit

hushed basalt
#

Cries in vdsl2

quartz ether
#

I have 100 users... I dont get to choose their clients lol

boreal pewter
#

Well for that I push them on my external server and then it's their own fight ๐Ÿ˜„

hushed basalt
#

With that user base it's probably worth optimising

boreal pewter
#

I tell all my users to please use a good device

hushed basalt
#

Transcode once in non realtime

clear ferry
#

now why the frick does my binary motion sensor stay on 24\7 ๐Ÿค”

quartz ether
#

Like I said 32 users before not a single issue kept up with all transcoding. Is what it is. Optimising for shit devices is not what I want to do at all. You can never win if someone wants to watch it on their phone.

hushed basalt
#

@clear ferry have you tried turning it off and on again

clear ferry
#

PEBKAC as usual

#

I had entered a turn off motion command as the front camera

clever mortar
#

Yeah, we've all been there ๐Ÿ˜„

hushed basalt
#

I think optimise sets it for chromecast 1 compatibility

#

Compatible clients will still direct play

#

Should cover most things without needing to transcode again

#

Think of it like main stream and shit stream

quartz ether
#

Think of the storage costs

hushed basalt
#

Like australians watching netflix at 7pm

#

Think of the power savings :D

quartz ether
#

Current media folder is about 60TB I think, so to even scale it back to 1/3 the quality and file size is another $600 in drives.

clear ferry
#

I've moved 2tb so far to gsuite, working out nicely

#

I only have 25TB total though

boreal pewter
#

Yeah but the price wont increase ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt

#

8TB drives are down under $200NZD I really should get some more

clear ferry
#

Not with your ridiculous power prices ๐Ÿ˜›

#

This system was all 10TB drives and 2xSSD for cache per node

#

12Nodes

quartz ether
#

How many drives?

#

Assuming there is some redundancy in there

clear ferry
#

That would be... 26x10 per node

quartz ether
#

312 drives and 52 SSD's.... so yea I need that

hushed basalt
#

Can you shuck

clear ferry
#

I'm installing a similar system with 30PB x 2 after Christmas

quartz ether
#

Does that slide out and have a second expansion shelf behind it?

clear ferry
#

Yes as visible in the picture

quartz ether
#

What kind of shelf is that?

#

I like it.

clear ferry
#

It's HPE Apollo 2000 series

#

The 4000 has nice shelves too

hushed basalt
#

Is it true vibration is far far worse for drives than heat

clear ferry
#

Not much vibration in newer drives imo

#

Compared to older ones

#

In regards to temp most papers I've read say that a stable temperature is more important than keeping it low

#

Too low temp ain't good for drives either, just like tires on the car

hushed basalt
#

Is that screaming at hdds

#

Yep it is

#

Cold tyres isn't something we're familiar with

clear ferry
#

Bad Aussie references

#

Should be a website

quartz ether
#

I currently just have Supermicro 36 and 24 bay cases

clear ferry
#

I looked at those but no good prices when I needed an upgrade

quartz ether
#

They are like $200USD its the shipping that will get ya

clear ferry
#

So went with a R510 with free shipping on eBay with drop shipping to Norway for $40

#

Paid $120 for the server

#

Already had 192GB ram and 2x12 CPUs laying in my garage

quartz ether
#

Should have grabbed a rosewill

clear ferry
#

Then I had to get a system board, and power supply, and no out of band

#

So ๐Ÿ˜›

quartz ether
#

Would also be LOUD....

clear ferry
#

They are actually not that loud

#

If you want to go loud I would go with a Superdome X or DL980

quartz ether
#

I really need to sort out what I have, I could turn one of the 36 bay cases into a DAS then have a 60 Drive (24 internal, 36 external) setup completely full of 2TB drives....

clear ferry
#

Or even a DL745

quartz ether
#

My supermicro's are loud enough.

clear ferry
#

Yeah supermicro are shit

#

In regards to noise

#

They are usually the noisiest in all datacenters

quartz ether
#

Quality systems ๐Ÿ˜› They're built to be in a datacenter and to stay cool

clever mortar
#

If you've not ripped the fans out and replaced them with ones at 65 dBA or higher, you're not doing loud right ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Usually the only customers who have them are either customers with legacy backup appliances or just needed a server fast, I would say 1 out of every 150 servers I see are supermicro ๐Ÿ˜›

quartz ether
#

@clever mortar Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹ also ACOUSTIC NOISE LEVEL 71 dBA

#

Stock supermicro fan

clever mortar
#

That sounds about right

#

A bunch of those and you're deaf sorted

quartz ether
#

The 36 bay cases have 7 of them in them lol

clear ferry
#

Had a customer try to give me a 2u supermicro once, I declined ๐Ÿ˜‚

quartz ether
#

I swapped out the fans on my main case for the quieter versions of the same fan think they are about 38db

clever mortar
#

It's a shame the Silent PC Review site has died off, it used to be an awesome source of actually low noise fans

#

I've used it to replace noisy fans with near silent ones that push the same volume of air

quartz ether
#

Noctua ones are great there are plenty of people showing them swapped into supermicro cases. This guy http://jro.io/nas/ swapped the whole fan wall out and create a 3d printed shroud for the front to hold more fans.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, my current home server is entirely Noctua, other than the power supply, the fans are barely audible

#

And that's with it sat in my home office, at head height when I'm sat down, with the intake fans pointing directly at where I sit...

quartz ether
#

I just need to swap my power supplies for the super quiet ones and I don't think I would mind it as much. Once I sell my spares I am going to rethink my whole setup and try and make it more compact, quieter and more efficient

clear ferry
#

Fun times,I tried changing the ACL of my home folder which is also a SMB share

#

Now it has locked me out ๐Ÿ˜›

#

And it's replacing the ACL recursively on 1.6TB of files

#

Just have to wait till it is done, then remove ACL xi2

hushed basalt
#

Newegg is really good for australians

#

If you don't mind garbage norco etc

#

Shipping is free though which is normally 150% the cost of the case

#

@clear ferry so what you're saying is you are an enterprise horror story waiting to happen

clear ferry

The microphone is terrible tho

#

Noone understood me even when turning it around and talking directly into it lol

#

Tho it was only like 70% display

clear ferry
#

I hate people who walk on the street with the phone laying in their hand talking into the microphone

#

๐Ÿ’

#

like this

boreal pewter
#

I hate voice messages

clear ferry
#

like wtf

boreal pewter
#

As if I had the time to Listen lol

clear ferry
#

My voicemail says "I won't listen to this, send me a mail"

#

๐Ÿคฃ

boreal pewter
#

:P

#

Btw it's nowadays common to call with speakers on

clear ferry
#

like wtf

boreal pewter
#

Because others wouldn't understand what you say without to hear them as well

#

In public

#

I even hate Vibrations and call sounds too

clear ferry
#

I didn't even have sound on when I had 24\7 on duty

#

just vibration on my clock

boreal pewter
#

I couldn't yet find - the- perfect watch either

#

I hate my life always wanting 2025 stuff now

#

AR, holophones, the perfect smartwatch, 64 cores

orchid rose
#

2025, AR ๐Ÿค”

boreal pewter
#

AR on the mass market, affordable and productive ready

#

Just because u can buy a Hololens for 5k as dev Kit doesn't make it usable yet

#

Imo

orchid rose
#

It's probably far away still. Oculus Kickstarter was more than 7 yeas ago and we still don't really have affordable mass market for VR. Going to be a while before AR is going to be usable if we're talking about glasses and not like AR on mobile phone.

boreal pewter
#

Yeah, I want a kinda hololens

#

I love the Youtube videos

#

Of their presentations

orchid rose
#

it'll happen eventually I believe but it might be much further away than I'd hope

#

and there's also the problems with no haptic feedback etc that limit it's usefulness and intuitiveness

boreal pewter
#

I would probably use it for gaming and work lol

orchid rose
#

I should get my USB3 card tomorrow so I can get my Rift S to finally work

boreal pewter
#

Vr is too expensive imo for the use

clear ferry
#

only good for sleezy stuff and horror games anyway

#

or the stuff my friend made in unreal engine, hang on I've got a link

boreal pewter
#

I know a good vr but ugh not for 800 bucks

orchid rose
#

I play some racing games so I'm expecting to get some value out of the Rift S. Let's see how disappointed I'll be with it

orchid rose
#

...and for 400โ‚ฌ it was getting towards the mass market affordable level I feel

#

all of these still have their limitations, you just have to choose which ones you take

hexed magnet
#

Just kind of wondering, what's everyone's favorite automated thing in their house?

quartz ether
#

Blinds

orchid rose
#

For my limited setup the light control is the obvious answer, but some little things here and there too, like doorbell pausing movies, or dumb amplifier turning on when a connected chromecast gets a signal

#

My curtain project is still not done ๐Ÿ˜ข

steel urchin
#

damnit, thought i had a few spare gigabit switches laying around

#

time to get some cheapos!

clever mortar
#

For the wife, lights; for me, notifications

unreal orbit
#

I'm pretty proud of my thunder/lightning simulation in my living room

steel urchin
#

ooh that sounds cool

unreal orbit
#

Based on utility though I'd have to say dynamic zone-based notifications

eager crest
#

hella

clever mortar
#

Yeah, getting notifications about my commute, based on where I'm nearest, and the current state of the trains, is "handy"

#

Hey Tink, looks like the trains are messed up

#

Or first thing in the morning, the TTS telling me all the upcoming trains, which are on time and which are late/cancelled/whatever

steel urchin
#

ROFL... Amazon wants $99 for "professional installation" of unmanaged switches ๐Ÿคฃ

orchid rose
#

does anyone have a news podcast or something playing automatically when they wake up? Haven't bothered to look for one that I could automate

clever mortar
#

I don't have time in the morning

#

I have a flex of about 5 minutes in my morning routine, I couldn't take time out to listen to news before I left the house

orchid rose
#

hehe, I'm slow to get up so it would be great to use that time somewhat usefully

hexed magnet
#

@orchid rose Yeah their installation rates are all over the place, though mostly just overpriced

orchid rose
#

Google Home has those news streams, but afaik there's no way to trigger them from HA

unreal orbit
#

You can trigger Alexa flash briefings from HA

Good evening

more of a bud light guy myself

jk. i mean, i do like bud light, but ballast point makes some really good IPAs

You are a fond drinker of water you say?

All electric heat in the house. Every bedroom, living room, and kitchen has its own thermostat.

clever mortar
#

That makes more sense

#

Too used to central heating ๐Ÿ˜„

tame swallow
#

Same. Used to have a Nest with my last house and central air. This house is all electric.

#

Thereโ€™s 2 more baseboards that donโ€™t have thermostats, but their in rooms I donโ€™t really care about.

#

Most of it is ceiling cable heat.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, we only use the heatpump

#

Only time I pull out the electric is when it goes below -25c

scenic radish
#

all about that gas heat over here

clever mortar
#

Yeah, the only electric heat sources here are a 10 year old electric heater in the garage, that probably still works, and the oven ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Oh, and three remaining bulbs that aren't LED

scenic radish
#

i wouldn't mind an electric oven. my range hood is vented but only with 4" duct, so who knows how much air it's actually moving out

clever mortar
#

Electric (fan) oven and gas hob is a wonderful combination IMO

scenic radish
#

yeah gas stove for lyfe

#

both my range and oven are gas. i have a toaster oven though which i use most of the time instead of the gas oven

steel urchin
#

fancy! jealous of the individual room temp control, AND the awesome panels

#

yeah we got gas again in this house and i almost hugged the stove/oven

unreal orbit
#

Electric stoves are the worst

scenic radish
#

for real

#

induction is supposedly better

#

but nothing beats gas

unreal orbit
#

Nothing comes close to gas for control over heat

steel urchin
#

damn i hate routers that don't let you add/change device names

#

agreed.. and switching burners is instant

scenic radish
#

yeah no "waiting for the element to heat up" bullshit

tulip hemlock
#

Gas doesn't heat up anywhere near as quick as induction

hushed basalt
#

Plus induction doesn't fill your house with poison, nor shed 90% of the fuel as waste heat

scenic radish
#

ah i guess induction is faster

#

but more like 60% loss for gas, not 90%

tulip hemlock
#

90% is a bit of a stretch, however in a dry winter climate natural gas cooking does add moisture to the house, the one thing I miss ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

clever mortar
#

Induction is shaped wrong for a wok though ๐Ÿค”

scenic radish
#

i can't get the humidity low enough in my place during the winter

clever mortar
#

I wouldn't object to switching my boiler for a heat pump

scenic radish
#

yeah i would throw my gas furnace out in a heartbeat

#

i'd love a heat pump

#

well, maybe sell the furnace on letgo or craigslist, not throw it out

clever mortar
#

Air source heat pump would be relatively easy to retrofit here, but my understanding is ground source is "better"

scenic radish
#

or keep it and just use it as the air handler

#

ground source is indeed better

#

especially in colder climates if i'm not mistaken

clever mortar
#

We don't get really cold, but below freezing over winter is normal

unreal orbit
#

Really cold to me is like 5C

scenic radish
#

we hit -21 F (-29 C) this january

tulip hemlock
#

I'm east coast Aus, so the whole Au region to US zone is a bit wonky to compare, however we are ducted heatpump for home heating + cooling, evacuated solar tube hot water + electric boost, need more solar and upgrade to heatpump hot water

clever mortar
#

5C is quite nice

scenic radish
#

our winters are usually between 0 F - 30 F (-17 C to -1 C)

clever mortar
#

GSHP:

Installing a typical system costs around ยฃ10,000 to ยฃ18,000
๐Ÿ˜ฑ

scenic radish
#

yeah they are not cheap

hushed basalt
#

Ground source?

scenic radish
#

yup

clever mortar
#

Annual savings... ยฃ180/year

tulip hemlock
#

air source heat pumps (sanden CO2) for hot water have been used in Japan for over a decade and they'll do COP 3? to -20 iirc.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah they're not worth it where I live

clever mortar
#

I think I'll pass

scenic radish
#

i'd take an air-source one in an instant

hushed basalt
#

Yeah heat pumps in general just make sense

clever mortar
#

Air source would be easy enough to fit here, space for a ground loop would be tricky
