has anyone come across a proper tutorial or doc for Lambdas in esphome ?
in the archive ?
there's a link to the esphome discord server there
yes, where people seem to be veeery silent.
๐คทโโ๏ธ could try #general-archived
oh you posted in the esphome discord. i mean, you just posted that 2 hours ago lol
3hours without reaction is about right to look for alternatives, no ? ๐คทโโ๏ธ
maybe? asking there is probably the best spot to ask. it's not like people are waiting for questions. either way, it looks like someone posted a link to the ESPHome docs in #general-archived
always best to start with the docs first ๐
I did start with the docs... and I'm just not finding what I need.
what are the cool kids these days using to work with github? i've been doing everything (mainly docs PRs) through chrome, but it's not exactly the fastest way of doing things...
What do you mean? I either edit in Chrome or I just use git
git + vscode I suppose is what I actually use
didn't know if there's something else with a GUI that works better. deleting multiple files using chrome is a bitch lol
unless i'm missing something
thanks for the tips, i'll take a look
"GUI" ๐
Haven't HA automations taught you how messy that gets? #command-line-masterrace
The VS Code source control is pretty nice, and simple to understand
sweet, i'll check it out
So at work we got Gin for Christmas. What about you guys? ๐
also i'm currently following a beginner's python tutorial. working in IDLE now
I would recommend VS Code for python as well ๐
i recognize lots of things at the beginning of this tutorial from doing so much work with jinja templating lol
I recommend VS Code for basically everything except things that require specific debugging techniques
VS Code has a fair amount of debuggers available, but sometimes you just need an IDE that was made for the language you're using
like it's really easy for me to remember the difference between == and = now
Python will be your first programming language?
thanks villhellm, we'll see how well vscode works on chrome os lol
there's a community build for it
it will be, unless BASIC counts lmao
Oh yeah that's right
but that was a long time ago. couldn't do anything in BASIC now
not that i'd want to
https://github.com/cdr/code-server check out this project if you want to work on a chromebook. You setup a server for VS Code, then you can access it through a browser
interesting. python evaluates not first, then and, then or.
thanks, i'll take a look. i can install debian packages on my chromebook though, so i might try that first
๐
shenanigans:
name = ''
while name != 'your name':
print('Please type your name.')
name = input()
print('Thank you!')
I used to enjoy coding 20 years ago, but I just don't have time these days
i'd like to be involved with a certain open-source project other than editing docs, so maybe i'll eventually get there
love it
I still have my copy of https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Seasons-Greatings-POSTCARD-Computers-santa-claus-Good-Naughty-List-Xmas/253230627275 from ... "some time ago"
Something you picked up in your 50s you say?
This isn't directly home assistant but it is definitely related. I am looking to upgrade my router off of AT&T's and not looking to break the bank but would also like better management features like setting more than just 10 static ips
Any recommendations?
well it's ok that it's not about home assistant, because that's off topic here ๐
Well its more related because if possible I would also like to be able to pull info off the router and into HA like active devices
can anyone help with raspberrymatic?
@clever mortar I have a rpi zero w with the raspberrymatic image. It runs and kind of works, but I can't access the webinterface and therefore can't configure anything
Well, they've got their own forum... have you considered asking for help there?
/r/lostdiscorders
https://homematic-forum.de/forum/viewforum.php?f=65 to save you having to visit their site and click Support
I haven't created a post yet, but I was searching online and found some thing but nothing worked. I though that maybe some of you have any ideas
It's possible there are a few folks here who've used it, but... you're likely better going where there's actually a user base
I could not figure out what the hell this teapot icon was looking at the map today
๐คฆ
lmao
water's ready
my first thought when looking at the first image was "why are only parts of it anti-aliased?"
Not going to lie it took me a minute to see the teapot

๐ง
lol I see the icon to me it just didn't look like a teapot at first
i know, i'm just being an ass lol
just making sure you never know sometimes but now that I see the teapot I can't un-see it and I will see it every time I see the briefcase icon so thanks for that
now we know villhellm's initials
Well the P stands for Phone, which I'm pretty sure is not my last name
nah it is
yes they are clearly VVP
Gotta change up my signature a bit
Very Very... Person
Well he just confessed his last name is Phone so Very Very Phone
I doubt it would be very difficult to find out my identity if someone really wanted to. The world we live in ๐คท
I mean have you seen that one subreddit dedicated to people doxxing people that literally ask to be doxxed?
Like to test if they can be?
basically
the idea for the people to get as much info of the person from only their reddit account and any other info the person shares like social media and stuff
welp it used to be a sub but it has since been banned for well obvious reasons
it was called r/doxme
ah, like /r/roastme, but for idiots
Hello guys

@quartz ether damn you jinxed me, I did an upgrade of freenas the other day, that I had to roll back, and now I reboots randomly

Fricking Norwegian postal service
Package took 3 days from Japan to Norway
Now it has been stuck in import for.... 11 days
its the same this side of the border too ๐ its no fun seeing packages fly across the globe in no time on trackers, just to have it disappear somewhere inside the postal service network with no updates for days.
Apparently they are still surprised ppl are using their services ๐
Is bluetooth mesh going to take over the zigbee / zwave world?
I can't imagine that
I think bacon has a better chance of taking over the sandwich world
Bacon
Osram is making bluetooth mesh switches and lamps already ;p
Osram isn't even in the top 10 players I would say, so not sure they can change the market
If I had to bet, I'd say that Zigbee will become the primary DIY protocol, and Z-Wave will be more popular with the semi-pro market. At least until Zigbee 3 really gets a good foothold, and tightens up standards.

If Zigbee 3 can introduce the kinds of certification that Z-Wave has, Z-Wave is in trouble
quick question - finally making the plunge from rpi3b+ to an nuc... Am I safe to snapshot and restore from the rpi to the nuc? I'm worried the CPU architecture is different so I don't know if hassio on the nuc will try and install the arm based docker containers?
oops sorry!
is there anyone here that could please assist me troubleshooting a sonoff mini ? i've flashed it with tasmota and configured the template, however the pins for the external switch will not work
#551843800209686539 @frail adder
thanks i'll try on that server
This Saturday night is starting to look up.
what are you, Finnish? ๐
Swedish, but I still like saunas.
But on eliminating every other reason for our sad demise, they logged the only explanation left, 'this species has amused itself to death'
@clear ferry haha. I am looking at doing a Xpenology build with one of my spares at the moment.
If zigbee 3 will support multiple coordinators that would be amazing
Sorry if I just suck at googling this, but is there a mailing list for the blog?
what does anyone think about the new wyze door lock? (i have a zwave lock, just curious on thoughts)
yesterday I wrote home assistant to an SD card, today I have it fully setup, including figuring out how to get data from DHT22 sensors connected to random pi's around the house
I gotta say I'm loving this so far
@distant hearth now make backups
๐
any one have any good recommendations for heated mattress pads that can be scheduled?
yeah, that's my last project for the night
@quartz ether seems to have solved it by bypassing the update that failed and upgrading to the latest beta๐
@valid halo we missed you!
@hidden laurel any dumb one can be made smart by setting the temperature up front (like the old ones with just a slider, no displays) and attaching a smart plug to it
@hidden laurel you could in theory also use a dimmer circuit
If the mattress pad was simple mains voltage, and you set the manual switch to ๐ฏ
But if your house burns down blAme atxbyea not me

Personally I would just use a simple smart switch on a manual pad and call it a day
I'm not trying to burn my apartment down
I thought about that
I'm trying to use a smart plug I think
Hit a damn record tonight ๐ฎ Sessions: 32 streams (7 direct plays, 25 transcodes)
Wow, I am getting google feed
@clear ferry Has been like a thunder storm here today, Don't think I have gone under 20ish users since about 3pm (currently 9pm).
@quartz ether RIP your cpu
His gear is hardcore
Even the Threadripper struggles when its at 32 users lol... User experience is still perfect though. About the only thing that stops is the api telling my lights to dim lol
Hah thatโs funny
That's probably like $400-$800 a year in aussie power prices haha
I worked out my rack costs me around $1500 nzd a year to run
Thats for Ryzen server with 1x ssd and 1x nvme, Unraid server 14x hdd, 4x ssd. Then just 2x switch, 4x POE cameras USG and wifi
Glad I have a Deskmini with a Ryzen 65w tdp
But yeah the amount of devices increases...
My 9020 sffs use about 10w each. 3 of them
That's on idle
I avoid transcoding like the plague though
You should always avoid transcoding for any price just for the sake of quality ๐
Indeed
my current rack setup probably costs me $AUD 420 per year
Real time transcoding is poo by design
@arctic ginkgo There's no, but there is an RSS feed you can subscribe to (and generally speaking they're also announced in #announcements )
ATV 4/4K with infuse has been the best for plex that I've experienced
4k transcoding is still terrible and washes out the image. So i close connections if it is transcoded. 1080/720 is fine. I try get x265 so smaller file size.
All plex frontend apps I've come across have been steaming piles of hot garbage
I can even stream 80GB 4k movies just fine. That's neither about size nor bandwidth
Transcoding happens when the client is shit
Cries in vdsl2
I have 100 users... I dont get to choose their clients lol
Well for that I push them on my external server and then it's their own fight ๐
With that user base it's probably worth optimising
I tell all my users to please use a good device
Transcode once in non realtime
now why the frick does my binary motion sensor stay on 24\7 ๐ค
Like I said 32 users before not a single issue kept up with all transcoding. Is what it is. Optimising for shit devices is not what I want to do at all. You can never win if someone wants to watch it on their phone.
@clear ferry have you tried turning it off and on again
Yeah, we've all been there ๐
I think optimise sets it for chromecast 1 compatibility
Compatible clients will still direct play
Should cover most things without needing to transcode again
Think of it like main stream and shit stream
Think of the storage costs
Current media folder is about 60TB I think, so to even scale it back to 1/3 the quality and file size is another $600 in drives.
Yeah but the price wont increase ๐
My old work has about 24TB on there too
About 10โฌ for me
I should bring home the 2PB storage system I worked on the other day
No you shouldn't..... you should drop it at mine
8TB drives are down under $200NZD I really should get some more
Not with your ridiculous power prices ๐
This system was all 10TB drives and 2xSSD for cache per node
12Nodes
That would be... 26x10 per node
312 drives and 52 SSD's.... so yea I need that
Can you shuck
Does that slide out and have a second expansion shelf behind it?
Yes as visible in the picture
Is it true vibration is far far worse for drives than heat
Not much vibration in newer drives imo
Compared to older ones

Brendan Gregg from Sun's Fishworks team makes an interesting discovery about inducing disk latency. For more details, see Brendan's blog entry: http://blogs....
In regards to temp most papers I've read say that a stable temperature is more important than keeping it low
Too low temp ain't good for drives either, just like tires on the car
Is that screaming at hdds
Yep it is
Cold tyres isn't something we're familiar with
I currently just have Supermicro 36 and 24 bay cases
I looked at those but no good prices when I needed an upgrade
They are like $200USD its the shipping that will get ya
So went with a R510 with free shipping on eBay with drop shipping to Norway for $40
Paid $120 for the server
Already had 192GB ram and 2x12 CPUs laying in my garage
Should have grabbed a rosewill
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HPE-Apollo-4200-Gen9-Server-2x-Xeon-E5-2650v4-12-Core-2-2-GHz-256-GB-RAM-224-TB/163344487108?hash=item26081712c4:g:mpsAAOSwQqZb2DG2 only one on ebay... yea I will be giving this a pass
Would also be LOUD....
They are actually not that loud
If you want to go loud I would go with a Superdome X or DL980
I really need to sort out what I have, I could turn one of the 36 bay cases into a DAS then have a 60 Drive (24 internal, 36 external) setup completely full of 2TB drives....
Or even a DL745
My supermicro's are loud enough.
Yeah supermicro are shit
In regards to noise
They are usually the noisiest in all datacenters
Quality systems ๐ They're built to be in a datacenter and to stay cool
If you've not ripped the fans out and replaced them with ones at 65 dBA or higher, you're not doing loud right ๐
Usually the only customers who have them are either customers with legacy backup appliances or just needed a server fast, I would say 1 out of every 150 servers I see are supermicro ๐
The 36 bay cases have 7 of them in them lol
Had a customer try to give me a 2u supermicro once, I declined ๐
I swapped out the fans on my main case for the quieter versions of the same fan think they are about 38db
It's a shame the Silent PC Review site has died off, it used to be an awesome source of actually low noise fans
I've used it to replace noisy fans with near silent ones that push the same volume of air
Noctua ones are great there are plenty of people showing them swapped into supermicro cases. This guy http://jro.io/nas/ swapped the whole fan wall out and create a 3d printed shroud for the front to hold more fans.
Yeah, my current home server is entirely Noctua, other than the power supply, the fans are barely audible
And that's with it sat in my home office, at head height when I'm sat down, with the intake fans pointing directly at where I sit...
I just need to swap my power supplies for the super quiet ones and I don't think I would mind it as much. Once I sell my spares I am going to rethink my whole setup and try and make it more compact, quieter and more efficient
Fun times,I tried changing the ACL of my home folder which is also a SMB share
Now it has locked me out ๐
And it's replacing the ACL recursively on 1.6TB of files
Just have to wait till it is done, then remove ACL
Newegg is really good for australians
If you don't mind garbage norco etc
Shipping is free though which is normally 150% the cost of the case
@clear ferry so what you're saying is you are an enterprise horror story waiting to happen
As long as management thinks you'll do more harm on your way out that you do staying where you are
You'll be safe
I usually end up fixing systems that the support organisation hasn't been able to fix for 4 months
So I'm usually safe
The Wiggles is the strangest music group ever, the men look like middle aged porn stars
Hi all, im new to the HA and just getting started. lookingon youtube and the HA website im stuck on the verifing my configuration.ymal file. on previous version there seems to be a button on the devolper / general tab. where is it in the 0.102.3 version. if anyone could help that would be great.
Read the channel topic @teal leaf
sorry new to this @clear ferry
I think I found the reason for my Kodi buffering issues. The cable I used to connect the PC might have been a little older than I thought as it gave me 10Mbps link speed ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
UTP
I haven't had a speed issue with a Ethernet cable for.... 17 years
I remember it specifically because it was so bizarre
Yeah 1970, when atxblyat already was 30 and an IT guy
I have used the same trusty cat5 cable in my bag for the last 12 years, it hasn't had clips for atleast 11 years and it has been bent more than people usually bend their pants
๐
my router isn't even supporting cat6
A router has no idea if your cable is cat3 or cat7
i mean it only supports fastE not GbE
That is something completely different

That said, I haven't seen a home router that doesn't support gigabit since... The early 2000s, you might want to replace it ๐
Oof

I remember having internet like that, in 2000
We got ftth in 2001, cost โฌ100 to install and โฌ50 per month, was only 100Mbit then though
What the actual fuck
why is germany like this
We pay 80โฌ/month for unlimited mobile data
We don't pay anything for streaming music or video on mobile
With private mobile subscriptions
I think the wife has 10 per month for โฌ25 and up to 30GB can roll over at one time
wth
๐
You can get 30GB at another vendor for โฌ25 I see
I can pay ยฃ110 for 1000/1000 fiber, including full TV package
And I live in a rural farm area
Hello atxbyeaq
We pay fucking 35โฌ for 16mbit/s download
@eager crest I dunno what your calculations are based off. But I pay 25โฌ for 6GB at the best provider. I get unlimited for about 50 or 55 bucks or so. If you choose another SP like Vodafone or O2 it gets even cheaper.
As well that we pay 35or 40 bucks for 100Mbit. YOu could chose cable and have much more cheaper tho
Telekom
ofc
As well that I can change my plan daily and move to unlimited
As well as you can book unlimited daily for 1 or 2 bucks too
5 bucks
for me
unlimited is 85โฌ/month
on telekoms website
Entdecken Sie die aktuellen MagentaMobil Smartphone-Tarife der Telekom mit Highspeed-Surfen, Flatrates und vielem mehr. Jetzt Mobilfunktarife sichern!
without a phone
But i am a common customer
๐ฉ๐ช
I use these offers, for sure. But I'm talking about regular prices and these are 85โฌ/month for unlimited
if you use o2 you can get it for 30โฌ/month obviously
a common customer? I thought we all had Direct Fiber with 1 Gigabit Up and Down going to our homes?
๐
For 800 I can probably connect to the internet exchange of Norway
for 800 bucks a month I could probably have Verizon give me a router that's from Post-2012
and maybe a coupon to Denny's
๐
In serious matters today I'm going to do a total restart of my Home Assistant. Clean setup from scratch as I cannot remember all the disorganized mess I had
I use like 180gb per month mobile
Honestly I'd have no other theory than being workless and homeless
And that has to be done right when you take them so it can't wait the 2 hours until you're in your home wifi?
no, cause the most of it is photo journalism
and if you send youyr picutres one sec late you get fired
(actually not, but it can cost you a few hundred bucks)
Then if it's for job you either get it paid by your boss or if you're on your own you get like half of the monthly fee back from the taxes
lol
Germany
Still no taxes? However unlimited from the Telekom has another price than you probably could get from the others
Yea o2 is 30โฌ
There is also a offer I wanted to check out as soon as I would have a usecase
but telekom is the best so
Overall - yes. You still have to compare by region
true
Telekom is not best in every region ^^
On my phone alone it says I use 60GB a month on Wee Fee
@eager crest Diablo?

Phone gaming/streaming becomes more interesting when AR and projects like hololens finally become mainstream
I must admit I feel extremely negative and cynical about phone games themselves because 99% of them are soulless cash grab MTX dens
phone gamesare shit
Yeah annoying. I lose fun of mostly every game after some time there
The only good Phone Game is XCOM Enemy Within
you get the full PC game with ZERO MTX
I mildly cringe every time my friends bring up Fate Grand Order (A mobile 'gacha' game) they enjoy playing
I remember when I was younger and cuter
I wasted cash money on Mass Effect 3's MTX
I learned my lesson

Anyone using sshfs or similar to mount SSH to windows?
Looking for a good and stable software for it
@valid halo my house mate used my multiplayer license for my PS3 copy of me3 for his own account
Not that I give two shits about console multiplayer..but still
Did you strange him with a CAT7 Cable as is required?
I have made zero progress on HA. Got distracted cleaning up hard drive
It's more fun to strangle with some good old 62.5micron cables @valid halo the cracking is satisfactory

hey guys , I am running this app on my windows box would would like to have it open in my VM so that I can just copy and paste issues. In the VM i am being asked to claim the account with an email and password before I can post to that server, but when I attempt to use the same email and password a I do here it says account is already being used . Am I not able to run more than one session at a time? Can any help me understand this?

wut
I am not able to have this app open on both my windows and linux box using the same email.
you are almost definitely doing something very wrong
when I enter my email and password. I am told that it's already in use with another account
right, you should read what you are seeing intead of blindly typing and pushing buttons
looks like you're going through the sign up instead of the sign in flow
@wet pilot really appreciate the feedback, but assuming that I am blindly typing away and not reading this stuff is really not helpful. I am fully logging into the discord app. but I am not able to post until I claim my account .
I am logged into discord on 4 different devices
dunno what to tell ya thin, this isn't discord suppport
should probably go talk to them
You are definitely doing something wrong

heh they didn't buy a house, the bank bought a house, they just get to live in it while they pay the bank back

but you ^^^^ did
yes millions of americans make it day to day because of ssi ...how would love to know how that is laughable

Actually that came up during the state of the union. I believe someone said early to mid 2020

I am now watching Linus tech tips and being jealous of how companies just give him stuff

at home my setup is modest, but i had a nice lab

that was 100 petabytes right there, i miss that lab
what are you making with the nodemcu?

amazon and carriers have dropped the ball so hard this year... literally 90% of my shipments are either late, or missing
yeah i haven't had many issues lately
except for a $200 dashcam that was "delivered"
(i received an empty envelope)
apparently a bunch of people had that kind of issue with nintendo switches
heh
yeah i live in austin, we have a bunch of amazon crap here
well i have about 5k worth of stuff said "delivered" that isn't
and another 20k worth of stuff late or completely "unknown" status
i did get SOME of it randomly today on a sunday from usps, thought that was weird
both those fuckers lie
fedex isn't any better either
nope, though amazon doesn't use fedex anymore
i have 5 claims open with them for "signature required and no one home" so they are "holding" it, but somehow the shipper has put "restrictions" on the shipments such that I can't pick them up, they can't be redirected, and i can't bypass signature requirements
yeah these are actually ebay purchases
ah, that sucks
i'm sure it'll all work out, but the thing i'm hung up on is your return period starts the date it is "delivered" which has been marked for a week now, and i still don't have it :S
So since search on discord is broken ๐ค is it better to run Hass on a windows machine or on a raspberry pi? or it doesn't matter it's the same ๐คทโโ๏ธ

In the UK we have far worse folks than UPS - UPS here are mostly competent
๐ค ๐คฆ
how hard is it to drop off a package at the office
Here we get Yodel saying sorry you weren't in because they couldn't be bothered even trying. Or delivering your package somewhere else
sad part its I really need the gear
and they never left a note
my wireless is about to be able to handle 1000 devices ๐
Wow
@brisk glen I have 24 access points in my garage, need to increase your coverage?
Maybe I should give them out for Christmas next year
_on the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, one more access point, and a partridge in a pear tree _
should be one more AP, and a partridge in a pear tree so that it rhymes ๐

Anyone know why Home Assistant doesn't allow a trigger on attributes but makes you repeat yourself by making a sensor that uses a template to grab the attribute...? For example: wanting to trigger on source change of a media_player has me jumping hoops to also create a sensor for that media_player with the exact same data as is already in the attribute source. Am I missing something here?

sup folks?
Dam my nodmcu comeing from over sea and still hasnt ship it go tracking number but not showing as moveing
I think I'm going to bite the bullet this weekend and start over
currently running venv
what's the preferred way to go for power users?
wow, I'm 51 versions behind ๐
i7 NUC
Notsure what that is
Docker?
no, running in a VENV on Ubuntu
Ok
server's running a bunch of other stuff
Run docker?
You said advanced :p
I had that i usally run freebsd with wed sever and a few thing
does it work well with USB Z-wave sticks?
It can if you docker compose it, should be able to pass through the device to the docker host
I've not had luck starting docker containers on boot
You need to set the restart Paranรก
Params
@last dirge see https://docs.docker.com/compose/production/
I tried using ubantu before i didnt car for ot much
Telling it to always restart will cause the container to run on boot, or if the service has some kind of angerism
Combine with health checks and it will just restart the service if it stops responding
Or is too slow
I'll probably try that
Then you move on to having 4 i7 nucs and have a cluster with kube :p
With a distributed file system and database running in a cluster mode
Some of us may have issues.....
At least it not a windows seever those are the wirst in my opion
Only their Licensing....
They make better NAS servers then Linux
Better performance
I had one for a bit it just seem to be so lagy
Consumer crap hardware or misconfigured?
Might be better for surten thing but what i was doing it i was running web and shoutcast server
Yah... pointless to use a windows server for that
I tend to use Debian
I dont think i have ever used that one
Tho, now it does not matter anymore since I containerized everything
just ran tshark to sniff some packets without specifying a host and in the time i ran the command, realized what i had done, and hit ctrl + c it captured 90,000 packets lol
lol
Sorry fo misspelling on smal i phone screen
RIP you hdd if you were logging it
thankfully i was not, just terminal output
SSD anyway ๐
my pi was probably freaking out though
load avg 200
ahh, took out one core then
muh Cortex-A53
okay so for docker, where do I get the docker image?
do I just clone the github code?
yeah, I read the instructions
๐
there's a zero percent chance that my configs are going to be compatible

It's like that for people who work at Svalbard too, my father was airport manager there for two years
Yeah, he managed the snow plowing
Been doing that at Tromsรธ airport since the late 70s
mustn't be that many flights though right
bit of plowing, shoot a polar bear sometimes
Yeah, not that many, but more than you would think

yup, my trusty old Huawei P8 only has 2.4GHz AND it crashes if you try to enable both wifi and BT at the same time
my old LG G4 also hangs when I enable BT

I miss the Nexus line of phones
Though, not the train wreck that was the 5x
I loved all three of mine, all of which bootlooped due to crappy hardware
I've loved my Huawei line
Mate 7 - p9 pro - p20 pro
Might go Xiaomi next time though
No idea, I've just heard good things about the latest top models
Xiaomi is annoying there, friend had to wait 7 days for unlock with 9t pro
I haven't rooted something in 6 years
But I gonna look for the Mi 10 tho
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is the interesting one for me right now
but I'll probably not change until late 2020 or early 2021
so probably a 11 will be in sale by then
Note 10 had too low Hardware for me
But I guess the Mi 10 will be too small
Why cant they just make - the- perfect Phone for a common sized man with almost 2m
I once used the Samsung Tab 3 8" as Phone but it got tricky when calling lol
YES

The microphone is terrible tho
Noone understood me even when turning it around and talking directly into it lol
Tho it was only like 70% display
I hate people who walk on the street with the phone laying in their hand talking into the microphone
๐
like this
I hate voice messages
like wtf
As if I had the time to Listen lol
like wtf
Because others wouldn't understand what you say without to hear them as well

I even hate Vibrations and call sounds too
I couldn't yet find - the- perfect watch either
I hate my life always wanting 2025 stuff now
AR, holophones, the perfect smartwatch, 64 cores
2025, AR ๐ค
AR on the mass market, affordable and productive ready
Just because u can buy a Hololens for 5k as dev Kit doesn't make it usable yet
Imo
It's probably far away still. Oculus Kickstarter was more than 7 yeas ago and we still don't really have affordable mass market for VR. Going to be a while before AR is going to be usable if we're talking about glasses and not like AR on mobile phone.
it'll happen eventually I believe but it might be much further away than I'd hope
and there's also the problems with no haptic feedback etc that limit it's usefulness and intuitiveness
I would probably use it for gaming and work lol
I should get my USB3 card tomorrow so I can get my Rift S to finally work
Vr is too expensive imo for the use
only good for sleezy stuff and horror games anyway
or the stuff my friend made in unreal engine, hang on I've got a link
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
I know a good vr but ugh not for 800 bucks
It also works with Oculus Rift.
I play some racing games so I'm expecting to get some value out of the Rift S. Let's see how disappointed I'll be with it
...and for 400โฌ it was getting towards the mass market affordable level I feel
all of these still have their limitations, you just have to choose which ones you take
Just kind of wondering, what's everyone's favorite automated thing in their house?
Blinds
For my limited setup the light control is the obvious answer, but some little things here and there too, like doorbell pausing movies, or dumb amplifier turning on when a connected chromecast gets a signal
My curtain project is still not done ๐ข
damnit, thought i had a few spare gigabit switches laying around
time to get some cheapos!
For the wife, lights; for me, notifications
I'm pretty proud of my thunder/lightning simulation in my living room
ooh that sounds cool
Based on utility though I'd have to say dynamic zone-based notifications
hella
Yeah, getting notifications about my commute, based on where I'm nearest, and the current state of the trains, is "handy"
Hey Tink, looks like the trains are messed up
Or first thing in the morning, the TTS telling me all the upcoming trains, which are on time and which are late/cancelled/whatever
ROFL... Amazon wants $99 for "professional installation" of unmanaged switches ๐คฃ
does anyone have a news podcast or something playing automatically when they wake up? Haven't bothered to look for one that I could automate
I don't have time in the morning
I have a flex of about 5 minutes in my morning routine, I couldn't take time out to listen to news before I left the house
hehe, I'm slow to get up so it would be great to use that time somewhat usefully
@orchid rose Yeah their installation rates are all over the place, though mostly just overpriced
Google Home has those news streams, but afaik there's no way to trigger them from HA
You can trigger Alexa flash briefings from HA
more of a bud light guy myself

oooh IPA

All electric heat in the house. Every bedroom, living room, and kitchen has its own thermostat.
Same. Used to have a Nest with my last house and central air. This house is all electric.
Thereโs 2 more baseboards that donโt have thermostats, but their in rooms I donโt really care about.
Most of it is ceiling cable heat.
Yeah, we only use the heatpump
Only time I pull out the electric is when it goes below -25c
all about that gas heat over here
Yeah, the only electric heat sources here are a 10 year old electric heater in the garage, that probably still works, and the oven ๐
Oh, and three remaining bulbs that aren't LED
i wouldn't mind an electric oven. my range hood is vented but only with 4" duct, so who knows how much air it's actually moving out
Electric (fan) oven and gas hob is a wonderful combination IMO
yeah gas stove for lyfe
both my range and oven are gas. i have a toaster oven though which i use most of the time instead of the gas oven
fancy! jealous of the individual room temp control, AND the awesome panels
yeah we got gas again in this house and i almost hugged the stove/oven
Electric stoves are the worst
Nothing comes close to gas for control over heat
damn i hate routers that don't let you add/change device names
agreed.. and switching burners is instant
yeah no "waiting for the element to heat up" bullshit
Gas doesn't heat up anywhere near as quick as induction
Plus induction doesn't fill your house with poison, nor shed 90% of the fuel as waste heat
90% is a bit of a stretch, however in a dry winter climate natural gas cooking does add moisture to the house, the one thing I miss ๐ฆ
Induction is shaped wrong for a wok though ๐ค
i can't get the humidity low enough in my place during the winter
I wouldn't object to switching my boiler for a heat pump
yeah i would throw my gas furnace out in a heartbeat
i'd love a heat pump
well, maybe sell the furnace on letgo or craigslist, not throw it out
Air source heat pump would be relatively easy to retrofit here, but my understanding is ground source is "better"
or keep it and just use it as the air handler
ground source is indeed better
especially in colder climates if i'm not mistaken
We don't get really cold, but below freezing over winter is normal
Really cold to me is like 5C
we hit -21 F (-29 C) this january
I'm east coast Aus, so the whole Au region to US zone is a bit wonky to compare, however we are ducted heatpump for home heating + cooling, evacuated solar tube hot water + electric boost, need more solar and upgrade to heatpump hot water
5C is quite nice
our winters are usually between 0 F - 30 F (-17 C to -1 C)
GSHP:
Installing a typical system costs around ยฃ10,000 to ยฃ18,000
๐ฑ
yeah they are not cheap
Ground source?
yup
Annual savings... ยฃ180/year
air source heat pumps (sanden CO2) for hot water have been used in Japan for over a decade and they'll do COP 3? to -20 iirc.
Yeah they're not worth it where I live
I think I'll pass
i'd take an air-source one in an instant
Yeah heat pumps in general just make sense
Air source would be easy enough to fit here, space for a ground loop would be tricky
