only ever had to deal with that once or twice
if you don't care about manual operation 🙂
imagine it would be simple to replace thermostats with temp sensors and install relays
but ya, a perfect solution is always nice
hmm, @clear ferry that has no backup electric heat at all, and has a low seer rating
it was design heavily to optimize the heat output though, why the a/c seer rating is so horrid
here it's optimized for the a/c side, and the heat not so much
Yeah, I have never heard of electrics on heat pumps
I don't see any ratings for the heatside of that, in comparable values I'm used to 🙂
It is effective down to -25 the seller said, but we start heating at -20 with wood
here the a/c seer is like 14 to 18, and the heat is around 10 or 11
ya, ours are only useful down to -10c, and not comfortable at all
Most of the electric cars in Norway use heat pumps too I believe
Which is 50% of all new cars
cars? seems odd
they just use the heat of the engine here, since the engine has so much waste heat
Makes no sense with engine heat in an electric car afaik
guess if you care about how long it takes for the engine to warm up though, if your travel time is short
Electric engines generate no heat
oh, electric car
ya, something to be done there 🙂
should already have an a/c, shouldn't take too much to adjust
The forecast is 80% electric cars sold in 2022 I think
not here in usa
mostly cause the travel distance of most people is kindof insane, compared to europe
electric would cut my gas bill in half, but that in no way overcomes the cost of an electric car cost yet
And electric cars are subsidised by the state
Full range BMW i3 is $25000 now I think
yeah, electric is nice, but range will probably be an issue for a long time
$44k here
Full range Tesla s is $75000 now I think
only 130 range
and no vroom vroom 😦
No worth having engine sound unless it is a in row 5 or a w12
i would totally drive an electric car though. my commute to work is 10 miles (16 km)
tesla full range (100d) is 130k usd
hehe 🙂
we had a guy that drove 11miles to work every day
he got like 8mpg in his 34mpg car
sanfran, took him like over an hour to drive 11miles
well i'm on the expressway for most of it so i probably get 30-ish
I avg around 60miles per day
chery bolt is really looking interesting still
chevy
and thankfully it's 20 minutes
almost got it new, I had attempted to preorder it
I mostly get 0.7 l/10km these days, my old diesel gave me 0.45l/10km
but then I moved and bought a new house, and kindof screwed that plan up
well, it's a failure here, just not marketed right
would be perfect for me
also it's charger is insanely small/slow
and it doesn't have tesla armor glass
Usually you can charge a tesla from 0-80 in 45 min here
only via a dc charger
how much is the ugly-ass cybertruck in norway atx?
I've looked, not easy to get those at home at all
No pricing yet @scenic radish
All chargers by the road are DC or 400v @tender plaza
At home we only get single phase 25a I think
not here
very few chargers are DC 200-500v
really only the tesla ones
most are just 45a 230v
that is the difference of our powergrid design
europe embraced 3phase, and we never pushed 3phase outside of industrial complexes
we have 120v for most items, and 240 for some others (like electric dryers, stoves, etc)
so getting a 480v 3phase charger is alittle hard
tediore, talking higher level than that, what feeds the subdivisions
yeah, i was talking strictly end-user stuff
commercial power is mostly 240v or 480v single phase
unless it's a huge strip mall or real mall, then it will have 3phase
that was directed at atxbyea 😉

envys his finland friends with 3phase at home
only 30amps or so, but still that is 90amps of 230v power
Watch it or no Christmas package for you
Yeah, I have three phase in, but that is distributed as different zones in the house
everything else is 120
3/4 of my panel is 240v
but it's also because i have gas appliances
everything I install is 240v, my computers, welder, air compressor, ...
I think I know three houses in Norway with gas 😛
eh i like gas. electric or air-source heat pumps would not fare well in my climate. i'd need electric aux heat if i didn't have a gas furnace
not sure about ground-source heat pumps
groundsource is good
well, two 5kw, plugs into a 30amp 240v l6-30
Zzzzzzzz
ya, we attempted to remove electric heat, and use gas/oil backup heat for the heatpumps
but that is like an extra 3k or so more than the $200 electric heat package
but if someones a/c died, it's almost a no brainer to replace it with a heatpump instead for the $500 extra
i wouldn't mind a heat pump for heat, especially since it means i wouldn't get ~150 F air blasting through my vents for 10-15 minutes that then makes the air feel cold after it turns off lol
or baseboard heat even, but those are ugly af
and screws with putting stuff against the walls
yup
Lol not even a HUD in your car
Pff it's a 2005 Volvo 😛
Nah I rather look at my HUD then
look at mr. moneybags over here with his HUD
💰
👀
(only setup HA 28hours ago, and still testing owntracks, forgot to open ipv6 for it to report yesterday)
🚸
yep, working nice now
kids are all tagged as school
so kids phone went, home -> away -> grandparents -> away -> church -> away -> school
have to drive near church to get to the school
My owntracks has like 3 minutes delay eventhough I have zone radius 80
that worked for a week
now it won't track
I have mine at a min of 150m I think, but the school is set to 900m cause it's alittle large
what mode do you use in app?
mqtt with encryption and login
no I mean the Owntracks app
sends to my public mqtt server, that my internal mqtt server grabs
oh, the lazy tracking, hmm,
significant changes mode
same. idk why it stopped working last week
I need to find an inaccurate locations setting for ios though
that works perfect on android
but the iphones keep randomly going out of range
I read that ios official HA app has tracking
yes, but only if you pay for the cloud addon thing
oh
I need to do that, but haven't yet
it's cause you need a public accessable reporting method
I did that with my public mqtt server
What makes you think Home Assistant cloud is required for location tracking in the app?
cause the documentation I read said it did
I suppose you could make your HA public accessable, and it would work that way
but it wasn't documented so I'm not sure, as I didn't test that
"(using the Home Assistant Cloud Remote UI is recommended but not required)."
Also... don't forget this is #the-water-cooler guys. Don't make the mods cranky 😉
"make your HA public accessable"
Oh that can be done with dns
and firewall rules, and maybe dnat/proxy, depending on your stuff
dnat/proxy is not HA related 🙂
not sure where I read that line about cloud needed
I know it was on something that looked like offical documentation, could have read it wrong
the devs have been very careful to ensure that cloud isn't required
Is there an expert for fixing HA not to start up error: homeassistant.exceptions.HomeAssistantError: Invalid entity id: device_tracker. , I pay for it!
#330944238910963714 @modest hollow
thanks, but have enough spamed on hassio already
home assistant is off-topic here
so homeassist at somepoiint got a different ip, and now some devices are no longer 'talking' (sonoff) I've changed their mqtt to reflect the server ip but they still dont talk. Any ideas? I've kicked over the server a few times
@reef veldt Swing over to the relevant install method channel and ask for help in ensuring your install has a fixed IP
hi guys. just signed in here. just wanted to say hi from germany
Shit the germans are coming
Nah german windows are safe
i got a little situation maybe somebody can help me out. i got a NUC with my main systen on and a raspi 4 in my house (same network) the raspi is for the lower floor. i like to connect them. anybody knows how thats done?
@misty vortex Please stop and read the channel topic
East coast US gets some good snow
Yeah, one of my trips to the US (years ago) was cancelled because of snow by the time I got to the airport. I thought how bad could it be ... then I saw the news, and the airport being under feet of snow 😄

BBQ weather
Sausage soaking
i want to go to a cabin in the woods in colorado during winter
That would be nice too
i want this to be over now :S
that's not an accurate depiction of what's actually going on... but... yeah.. i'm over it
@steel urchin what is it?
So I bought an iPod touch for testing purposes and I've gotta say... Apple is delusional for selling this for $300 lmao. It's barely worth $100 in my mind. Doesn't matter to me though because I'll return it once I'm done with what I'm doing
I don't own any apple devices so maybe that's why I'm surprised at how expensive it is
So I bought an iPod
Apple is delusional for selling this for $300 lmao
😐
So I guess I didn't buy an iPod touch, I'm borrowing one
I'm only using it to generate a HomeKit code for something, then I'm returning it lol
That was the entire point of picking one up
U welco
Hi
Looking for recommendations on smart switch. Is this the right channel?
@rose walrus ubiquiti
Basically I'm looking for something that has the standard on off, potentially with dimmer, but then has a method for triggering other scenes or trigger things in HA. Either additional buttons or gestures. Motion sensors for HA would also be sweet.
Would insteon switches allow for triggering HA? What about lutron caseta?
@ancient raptor I'm not finding much on ubiquiti smart switches. Any other details?
Anyone here a SmartThings user?
The developers portal seems to have changed (I'm assuming) because I can't code a device type handler but the instructions everyone publishes says I need to just click on a couple links. But it says I can't create one in a private workspace?
hello HA community!! I am putting together a school presentation about the dangers of not-in-your-control IoT devices and would like to compile a list of urls that might show my point. for instance I have these two urls already prepped:
https://fortune.com/2016/07/29/auto-pet-feeding-app-glitch/ - auto pet feeder glitches and doesn't feed pets
https://hackaday.com/2017/04/05/iot-startup-bricks-customers-garage-door-intentionally/ iot company purposely bricks device
does anyone have any other links to share?
@rough valve search: security camera botnets. Ivy bug.
@rose walrus
https://www.ui.com/unifi-switching/unifi-switch-8/
https://www.ui.com/unifi-switching/unifi-switch-poe/
The UniFi Switch 8-port models feature Gigabit Ethernet ports in a compact form factor. The switches are fully manageable, delivering robust performance and intelligent switching for your networks.
@ancient raptor ahh. I meant light switch not network switch. Should have specified lol.
Indeed
@rose walrus as far as light switches go, they are essentially a commodity. Any will do. Samsung, Leviton, Sonoff, some MQTT thing etc.
@amber bramble @ancient raptor thank you very much!!!
is it possible for Broadlink RM Pro+ to control a RFID door access?
@amber bramble I'm really glad I ignored Wink when they insisted I buy a Wink 2 a few months back. Now I've completely switched over to a Z-wave dongle and unplugged my Wink 1. The only thing left is to replace my 2 Kidde Smoke detectors, that only Wink can speak to, with Z-wave ones (that was today's project).
Hey anyone have any suggestions on roller shades? I'm open to both motorized, and some kind of diy/semi-diy adding motors to non-motorized. However I need to have it work for 110 inches( a few inches less might work) tall. Everything I'm looking at seems so expensive 😭
@finite galleon how much are you looking to spend?
110 inches long or wide?
Got my new laptop today
so 9 ft tall? damn....
110' tall, I have a space that's 190 in wide.
Now I actually have a decent computer that isn't tied to a desk
But it's split into 4 segments, so it could be 4 shades or 2 really wide ones
Well, for a normal window I would expect to pay around maybe 150 each. but for something like that ...probably special order.
or one short one and one really really wide one
@hushed basalt amd?
My neighbor did cellular blinds that were motorized for a reasonable price.
right, I mean the shades them selves are not too bad. It just seems to have a motor with it adds $100-$150 per shade, which seems stupid
ikea doesn't have it?
ikeas only seem to go 79" https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/fyrtur-blackout-roller-blind-wireless-battery-operated-gray-70417463/
you try this ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocOO-8X_-Rk ?
Yeah, I'm tempted to do something similar and grab 2 of these https://www.stevesblindsandwallpaper.com/blinds/product/3649-steves-good-blackout-solid-vinyl-roller
Shop Steve's Exclusive Collection - Roller and Solar Shades - Good Blackout Solid Vinyl Roller Shade blinds, shades and shutters at Steve's Blinds & Wallpaper. Find the best brands and deals for your window treatment needs.
Origninally I was thinking 4 separate shades, but if it's 2 less motors maybe
enjoy that surface @hushed basalt
@storm summit can't believe axis wants $170 for their roller blind conversion kit. There's a bunch of no name kits on amazon tho. Might be cheaper than pricing out motors /steppers/ etc
I wish it has Thunderbolt 3 and a discrete gpu
But the 3:2 ratio screen are winners for me
I spent many thousands of dollarydoos to install 10mm bottom up top down cell binds 4 years ago. Now I'm kicking out a window to install french doors one of the blinds has to have 30cm added to the drop. But... the colour I chose four years ago is no longer made and the total drop now exceeds the maximum they make. 😡
Blinds manufacturers are so far behind modern times. I'm actually looking at getting some custom motorised top down bottom up cell blinds manufactured in China.
i'm cheap so i buy my blinds from justblinds.com
@finite galleon maybe once you figure it out you could do a blog post. blinds seem to be tough.
Yea. axis is a a gip if you're putting in new blinds. maybe if you have some super fancy blinds thats a good idea
@young sigil Hmmm where are you ordering from?

The problem with blinds is if they not motorized, I have too many windows and I am too lazy, so I will just end up leaving them always up or always down. At my last place I just lived in darkness. but I want to change.
You should try living above the Arctic circle
I have a motorized one, it's always down
Sun 24/7
Actually at my last place my SO went a bit nuts, and put solar film on all the windows so even when they were up it was not sunny! 😂
But now I'm in a darker/foggier place so it's good not to do that.
@finite galleon haven't ordered yet, but I'm going to contact: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Honeycomb-blinds-top-down-bottom-up_60716221593.html
I know a fair bit about building science
Feel free to ask any window questions @young sigil
Anyone ever had any custom chassis machining? It's been too long and I've lost my contacts, but I want to build a custom chassis
I hate trains, the WiFi never works and tunnels frick up 4g
yeah but you don't have to drive and sit in rush hour!
@steel urchin last time was 20 years ago at school
lol yeah it's been about 3 years for me when i was in the storage industry
Trains are awesome, you get to whoosh past the stationary traffic on the motorway 😛
picked up 16TB today... shuccing these wds once my Optiplex SFF's come in
scored 2x of them 😛 i7 4770k's, 32GB PC1600 (wish it was faster, but DDR3L), and 10 gigabit ethernet adapters
10Gb? How is life in 2009? 😛
i mean, most people don't run 10 gigabit switches
He ain't most people 😛
heh fair enough, i know the feels
@hushed basalt When I say "I am kicking out a window to put in french doors" I mean the qualified builder I have employed is doing it.
Do you blend?
Well, if you try it, and it turns out you do... I suppose we'll never know 🤔
Nice, whatever is hitting me in the head is somewhere between hail and rain
Sleet?
Somewhere between sleet and hail then 😛
All you need is a good strong gusty wind and you're in for a real treat
Hey, it's Scotland, we've got a hundred words for different kinds of rain, and hail is just frozen rain
😂
😛
Yeah, that's the fun kind here too
The kind that makes you wish you had goggles and a scarf
38 degrees today
Definitely haven't just spent a day troubleshooting the smart bulbs in the kitchen only to discover that while fixing an issue with my oven the landlord replaced them with normal bulbs because they where "behaving strangely"

Newbie looking for a little help. I have a wink hub 2 that i been happy with but not that i am getting into automation more it's falling short.
It's been working fine for me up until i am trying to do automations around my sensi humidity sensor. Wink isn't updating consistently.
Should i switch to smartthings? what's my options?
well, since you're asking on the Home Assistant discord, most of us would tell you to use Home Assistant
If you're looking for generic advice, there are other (much less popular IMO) Discord servers, such as https://discord.gg/homeautomation
IMO any cloud based home automation platform is a mistake
@wet pilot i am starting to use home assistant but it doesn't interface directly to all devices so you would need some kind of hub. Just seeing what everyone else is using.
Also in that case you'd want to go to #330944238910963714
And, doesn't require hubs 😉
hmm, seems wink is a all in one hub
so really you need to know what protocols your devices are using, and change them over to HA
but doubt that will solve the issue
most likely your having an rf issue, interference, too much space between devices

its a sensi interface cloud enabled so it's not an rf issue. I think they lost funding and looks like they are about the close down.
I think it's issues on the wink cloud side.
Wink have been on the death spiral for some time now
Looks like i was able to add sensi to smartthings without the hub. I will see if i can intergrate smartthings with ha.
That'd be a #330944238910963714 adventure
for the record, alarm dot com is absolute garbage trash and so are their people
garage doors were registered through their system, and somehow disconnected, and now my gateway is "lost in the ether"
i no longer have control over my garage doors
and they're claiming they can't figure it out
Is it too soon to nuke them from orbit?
So sad about snips
i knew when i was entering the serial number into their site it was bad news
and within 3 days, it was donezo
oh, ok... so now i'm talking to the regional manager of alarm.com, and somehow suddenly it's magically connected again as we're talking, even though i've told the gateway to factory reset... which means they're clearly triggering registration from their end
that doesn't feel shady at all
I have a good story about my new pi4 with case.
I have pi4 with case and using small fan. Working fine with ha and adguard for 15 days. Temperature Cpu was 30-32 degrees.
Next day I heard very noise on case and I thought faulty fan. Actually I don't know where is loud from because I am deaf and wearing hearing aid.
Hovewer, I came out on top case and see what happened without fan. Temperature Cpu increased up to 65-70. That really hot. So I start research to buy small fan with 3volt and bought it. Waiting for delivery now.
Wait, I have usb fan and I want try to use pi4 and chilli on top case. Checked temperature Cpu cooling down 27.
Have look photos.
That usb fan very very quite
Sorry my bad English
yep, the larger the fan, the slower it can spin for the same amount of cooling
making less noise
why we take servers and adjust the 80mm fans to 120mm or larger
@tender plaza that problem is power supply kit is 3volt. If you try use fan 120mm then need 12v
not true, the size of the fan doesn't dectate the voltage of the motor
and several 12v 120mm fans will run at 3v just fine
Are you sure. I don't want explode my new pi 4
I'm sure, now not EVER fan is the same
but fitting a 120mm fan in there, heh
have to see how many mm thick it can handle
That good question but most 120mm fan has 3 pin
fan size and motor capabilities are mutually exclusive
@tender plaza alright, let me buy fan 120mm and tape on top case
ok so finally got the myq stuff figured out... alarm.com is a scam and i'm suggesting to stay far away from them
no need, personally I would see the largest fan I could fit, at the correct mm thickness, and look for a 5v version
@strange vapor please tell me this is satire...
@steel urchin how so? my myq stuff just worked first attempt
now alarm.com, heh, they are nice for work, but really haven't liked it at all for home
mine did too, but i had to add it to alarm.com for my panel and stuff to work, which means it cannot be registered to me anymore... so essentially i just informed myq that the way alarm.com works is they are basically integrating through a user, which then associates the serial number of the logic board to that one account.. they verified by being shocked at how many gateways were associated to the account
so essentially alarm.com hijacked my serial number, and were playing dumb about removing it from their account
unless i pay for support
but it also was never a requirement
yeah, i just didn't realize they assume ownership like this
and now they won't cooperate to give it back
Moral of the story: cloud devices suck
^^^
expecially when 3rd party linking to your cloud device
i knew as i was entering my serial number with the tech it was goign to be a bad time
well, 3rd party linking is actually ok, because you typically have control to remove integrations
this one you do not
this is literally a backdoor into myq through hackery
not really
and assuming ownership of the serial number
it's just assumed ownership/hijacking
how do you use the myq app on your phone?
i had to remove it from my account to add it to theirs
i just didn't know i couldn't go into their system and say "remove garage door"
What part of their TOS does that break?
and they are unwilling to as well
the only thing I really liked and used alarm.com for was to disable the alarm system when someone activated it at work by accident
falsifying users and using programming to access their services is apparently in their TOS (as literally almost every public facing system)
hmm, I cannot use the myq app or HA now 😦 cannot use programming
I'm still looking at bringing mine away from myq though long term, too many myq outages
Doesn't sound like they're falsifying if you're giving your information voluntarily...
it's falsifing they are the owner
and that they're a user
even if willingly done
they're not a user, they're a script
services typically use licenses with terms of services that dictate you can't use programming to access their systems to avoid single point of concern... a single system responsible for 400k users spamming their systems could take a heavy toll, and if that system ever goes haywire and sents 100x the requests per user, then you've saturated their system with broken code.
amazon literally sues people into the ground for it
facebook is under federal scrutiny for it
it's a serious concern.. .one day you wake up and your garage door is opening and closing non stop because of a glitch in their system, and the only control you have is to pull the power to the unit or the wifi
now will this happen? maybe not, but i don't like NOT having control of my system, and someone assuming ownership and keeping it hostage for a ransom
anyway, the result is a $175 logic board replacement, which is being billed to the security company and not me
Why not just ditch both companies? What's the point of keeping yourself tied down to the whim of their servers?
Long live building stuff myself
i'm considering getting something else and ditching the native solution
i'm just not sure what as of yet
this was part of the tech package that came with our new home
all "free"
so, i was trying to go with it rather than against it
I cooked up a DIY solution for my MYQ garage door in about 45 minutes. It's a pretty simple bypass
i'd love to see/hear about it!
It's literally a relay soldered into the physical button that activates the door and a reed sensor
the native solution with myq is very nice actally
this IQ Panel is so silly too.. it's only automations is to turn a light on at night lol
nothing you can do gets close to it's ability
yeah, that's what i was considering @unreal orbit
but you are bound to their cloud 😦
what do you mean @tender plaza ? all it does is open and close?
What ability does it have that I can't do myself?
You can't even control the light that's in the opener...
it does more than just open and close
you can control the light and other lights
That's... not even true
mm not on mine
maybe you have a newer model
mine are 3 years and, and 1 year old
i probably have the NEWEST model, it's not even on their site yet
only the chamberlan equivalent
both, two chamberlain 1.25hp wifi, and one liftmaster something
chamberlan = dealer, liftmaster = diy, but they're 100% identical product lines
errr, yes, sorry
not identical, but very very close
I cannot get that 1.25hp fast open in liftmaster 😦
have to deal with 7seconds, instead of 4
oh i thought they were anyway... however, my myq app literally just lets me open and close... even if it could control the lights that's not that impressive to me
ya, the app won't let you, unless you buy extra light modules
geofencing or something wouldn't be hard to add
but that is a limitation of the app, not myq
Well yeah, there are a million things that you can buy separately
but for my use-case the garage door is actually a fairly simple solultion
i just need to get some other projects done first
I should have taken some pictures of the process. The solder points are a bit wonky because the button contacts are crossed. 10 seconds with a multimeter will tell you where to solder though
ya, then you need a tilt sensor or something too
mmm yeah maybe... i don't think i'd do that right away
but i understand your point for it
Reed switch is easier. Tilt sensor would require running wires on the door
i've seen battery op ones
Then you have to deal with changing batteries 😉
but the point of the tilt sensor is the door may malfunction between open and close
why wires?
and the reed sensor won't detect that
single esp + battery, hell a 18650 would last years
If the door is not all the way closed it will show as "open", which was good enough for me
ok
so my myq is talking to port 8883
sounds like mqtt ssl to me
I should look at what it takes to adjust it
wonder if it verifies certs or anything
You can also add more than one reed sensor if you want different stopping points
I'm not hijacking
right to fix 🙂
ok, lets powercycle this beast and see what it does in what order
are you using wireshark or what to see all this?
wonder if this should move to #diy-archived but i'm following and interested 😛
just tcpdump
wireshark is too fancy
that battery was a pain to remove, liftmaster 8857wl
all my others have been simple
haha, if I override the dns entry, it tries with another dns entry
wonder if it is tied to private ip being invalid or something else
It's probably expecting a certain response
ya, just need to see if it wants a public ip, or cname
or if it's limited to an ip range
that worked 🙂
just has to be a public ip address
now it's failing, I assume on certificate check
@scenic radish Have seen them in Nordstrom
Vivint sales guy just came to the door
I already have half the stuff he's selling... including the Nest which I think I'm gonna swap out for my Ecobee. Seems like he hadn't heard of HA
Mostly finished my lovelace floorplam nightmode. Switching works fine, but the amount of overlapping lights is a pita...
....next step is to get some furniture that works with floorplanner.com
@flat thunder syntax.fm guys rag on homeassistant
They're professional full stack devs but they use google home / alexa etc. Urgh
HA is way more reliable than any of my google home "automations". Let alone way more powerful
looks rad @orchid rose
@strange vapor that's terrible
Any suggestions on connecting a roborock s4 to WiFi? Router status page shows the MAC address connected to the 2.4 wireless but the light on the device continues to blink fast and the device doesn’t show up in the app.
@scenic radish Yeah totally impractical. They need some sort of connector to keep them attached to a phone so you know where they are. You could recharge them from the phone too.
brilliant
Better yet, they could be powered by the phone itself without any power source or battery of their own
Woah
What if we use audio signal from the hardwire as well
We could save all that signal processing in the buds as well
XD
I think we're on to something
This will be even better than Apples new keyboard features in the MacBook Pro 16
Escape key, arrow keys, scissor mechanisms,
what's old is new again
They even put cooling in the laptop!
@hushed basalt holy shit
revolutionary
Dude you're a genius
now if only they'd go to a standard keyboard layout
kill the cmd key
also, make home and end work reliably
has to use OSX for work and hates apple's bullshit
Yeah cmd is the worst
I also have to use windows, linux and mac desktops regularly
Mac fans love their archaic command keys though
Alt shift command s stand on one leg and sing old macdonald, to change windows
wanna take a screenshot? cmd+ctrl+shift+4
Print screen? Nah that would take a key
yup
I still have no idea how to snap two windows side by side in mac
How do mac people have more than one app open at a time
manually resize it
Plus everything is always in a floating window that takes up 80% of the screen
most mac people don't
they just fullscreen everything
most don't even use multi-monitor
as evidenced by how shit apple is at supporting it
Or those macbook laptops that had one thunderbolt port
And you can't use an end chain thunderbolt device and a external monitor at the same time
Professional video production on a mac is pain
Why would you want simple cheap powerful reliable internal PCIe cards
When you can just spend six times as much on thunderbolt equivalents
With flaky drivers, run over a mini display port connector with no locking
yup

I can't stop fucking with home assistant. I've lost sleep, I've taken 2 dozen or so devices off the cloud, I've started running a let's encrypt ssl https server, I think I have an addiction. I'm just running it on a virtual machine right now, but hopefully I can afford something better soon. though, this virtual machine is running great. Help, I need food, coffee, and sleep. Not necessarily in that order lol.
do you get used to thinking about automations in your sleep? LOL
god damnit, so this is real then? This... exists? bc this is kinda what I had hoped for then I started my smart home adventure lol.
After a year or two you'll run out of things to automate and it will settle down to a mild obsession.
Hey an question, im about to start an prodject where i connect blinds to home assistant, is there any specific language i most use to make for home assistant or can i use what ever i want?
@young sigil that's accurate. I'm about a year in, is now down to a mild obsession
Also... #330944238910963714 for these last few messages lol
hey all, that last blog post about how important Home Assistant can be for disabled people really got me thinking
I'm happy to donate a little bit of time each month to anyone with physical or mental disabilities that wants help making themselves more independent
please message me on here if interested / if you know a better place I should post
I'm by no means an expert but I work professionally as a programmer and I have a good understanding of home assistant
I wonder if this should be a group of some kinda, could call it Home Assistant Independent Living (HAIL!)
yeah exactly, perhaps a set of common configurations
to ease deployment for potentially less technical carers
obviously hardware is very different across deploys
this was posted in the replies to the recent blog post https://andrewhoover.info/blog/categories/home-automation.html
Since February of 2018, I've been working on a lengthy project - I am slowly adding digital control and automation to the everyday things in our home. This project, unlike most of the others I've started grew out of a need rather than a want. Sure, the want is there and I'd b...
I got home assistant working with my Eufyrobo vac today, that was cool.
took about 2 hours of futzing, but its fully functional from ha now. 😄
eventually you'll run out of things to automate. Hopefully you'll have some stronger drug by that time... 🙂
right now, my focus is on getting a dedicated server established, its just running in a VM right now. but tbf, its working, and I'm scared to try to move it to a pi or whatever.
suppose thats what snapshots are for
The move should be pretty straight forward copy-paste but I don't see why you'd want to move from VM to a pi if you already have it working nicely
My pc is a hog? idk, seems a waste to have the PC on all the time.
but its not bad, and its stable, so you're not wrong.
Fair enough, I ran mine on my gaming PC for the first year or so too before moving to a NUC
mine is a gaming rig too, I can run the server and play my game at the same time
the issue I think is its pulling like 250-300 watts from the wall constantly.
My PC has been on for.... 13 years 😛
fair enough, glad to have some thoughts on it
just didn't know how viable it was in a VM, but hey if its working/has worked for yall, I'm down.
unless you're constantly running something heavy on it, it shouldn't consume more than 70-100W
even though I moved my HA to the NUC and storage to my router, I still have my PC on all the time.. Too much work to transfer all torrents to the nuc as well
it's an fx 9590 with a 1080 lol
Ok, I will recind what I said. the UPS is drawing 250-300 watts. but, that's my 4k tv, 2 monitors, and a couple other odds and ends. so I suppose its not bad. Lemme check my psu for actual draw from my PC.
rainmeter, which has been accurate is showing just under 250 lol. so yea, the PC is a hog. Maybe I can tone back my VM to reduce load? I have a ton of overhead though, and I use this PC to encode video now and then. idk, there are just a few reasons I kinda want to switch.
Do you have powersavings turned off or how would it be that high? I found some review that states it should consume around 70W at idle with a GTX 1080
my cpu? I do have some power savings turned off, lemme check my config. Good point, it does seem high for this power profile.
I am using 12gb of ram lol
People who care about 250w
HEY! My power bill is like 250 a month!
The cpu should drop the clock speeds and voltages when at idle unless you disable that function which decreases the consumption significantly
at 250 a month I wouldn't worry too much about it though, lol 🙂
maybe its disabled in bios. idk. i don't want to keep spamming this chat. I love you all. if you want to help Mr K my DM's are open. ❤️
My house averages 2500kwh per month 😛
so 10%? 🤣
Last December was 3700kwh
that's more than my yearly consumption
Last year was 37000 total
what? are you hosting a pornhub server
Greta should arrest you
It's a normal sized Norwegian house
My colleague has half the house of me and uses roughly half of what I do
that's wild, 37000 is indeed more then at least 3 quarters for me. I just checked.
so yea, done worrying.
@orchid rose 95% of all Norwegian electricity is 100% clean though
until I pay $1 a Kw I'm not going to sweat it lol
From hydroelectric or wind
I wish we had that locally to us
We pay $0.1 per kwh
we have this weird service that supposedly trades your dirty energy for clean energy with credits, but i don't get it. its not exactly well known. and you end up actually paying more
Usually we pay $0.05 per kwh, but prices are high now
it's about $.16 pretty much year round for us. they have plans for it being lower some times, but its random, and you get gouged with super high prices for like 50 hours a year.
it's all buggered up, I hate it lol. Plus, I'm on Gas heat. Yuck.
Is that everything included? For us the pricing is divided in to production and transportation. You can choose the producer, but the wiring part is a monopoly and covers more than half the price
Yes, that is all included
no, just the electric is .16, I pay for gas heat as well.
interesting, but yea, gas...lol. it's city gas too. lol wtf.
I don't even live in the sticks, It's in town, no tank lol.
little under 0.1€/kWh seems to be the current total price for electricity here now
I would say 85% of households here are either heatpump or electric, the rest are either ground heat or water bourne heat
And almost any house has fireplace for the winter
I'm on a dual energy stack, with an electric/oil boiler system.
4.37 ¢/kWh unless it's colder than -12°c and then it jumps to 25.55 ¢/kWh but at -12°c my electric boiler switches over to oil.
one of my "TODO"s is figure out how to get some automations based on that price switch, there's a thermostat and relay hooked up the the boiler system I want to tap into and stick a nodemcu in there or something as a sensor
Those aren't bad prices
Quebec
iirc pretty much the lowest in North america
standard is like 6¢/kWh if you're ont on the dual stack thing
but considering there's only a hand full of < -12°c days a year it works out pretty well
Another cloud only home automation manufacturer goes under... though given they targeted the UK only, I doubt many folks will care :D
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/12/03/den_automation_liquidation/
Does cloud only mean the device won't work without internet?
Yes
The device will work, just without your control 😄
If you have no secondary way... like I have for most of my devices its own app
At least with Den, all their devices were smart versions of normal things - so smart switches, sockets, etc. Local control will still work...
Those switches look so 1990s
Well in Hong Kong they used those style but changed since like 2000s
Maybe... Because hong Kong was released from UK to China around that time?
The underlying connections didn't change. Still 220V unlike 110V in China. It's just that outside needed some modern change.
I have used wemo smart switches in the past and I'd say I'm 6/10 with them; any suggestions for better switches?
My Tuya/SmartLife ones work pretty well, and with home assist with some casual setup. I wouldn't recommend them though. I also use Wyze Sense bridge and sensors for motion and door open/close. I use a custom component, hook the bridge right up to my device, and it honestly works better then their cloud app.
Hey, I'm 100% new to home assistant and raspberry pi, I don't have either of these.
I have a raspberry pi sort of question. If I install home assistant image on it, does it mean the raspberry pi can only function as home assistant hub or can it be used for other functions as well, such as controlling NAS, etc?

Hey I made a video tutorial about Home Assistant and Almond. Can I post the link here and if yes where exactly ?
thanks @scenic radish
just don't spam the link
we need our bot back up first 😭
Need to get if back up so we can save John Connor

How long until the time machine integration is finished?
Yesterday
don't know but home assistant is off-topic here 😉
so that theoretical integration cannot be discussed

Atxbyea doesn't have any server hardware
He's just holding it for a friend
@fallow galleon server hardware generally has front to back ventilation
So you could just buy some generic air con return vent filter material and tape that on the front
Or put it in a rack with filters
It's in open rack sitting in the basement
Filter the cases then
See if you can put it behind the front shroud on the cases
Also try to stop dust getting in the basement to start with if possible
You will need to maintain the filters though
And air flow will go down
I'll look into Air con return vent filter.
I only know of paper air con filter
Hmm. Do you think pantyhose works? Just read about it
It can catch large particles
Good as a pre filter
But you'll need something better behind it
As a ipv4 pleb I feel personally attacked

800mm2 extension cord anyone?
Make sure you bi-amp those for proper audio fidelity.
audio ? just hook up 8 of those and get proper 100TX-FD
Daww. That's adorable!
But you'd need some more conductors in an extension cord. How about 3x1800mm2?

Or maybe some 2000 mm2 copper if you're worried about fidelity.
Those are the ones eastern european gangs love stealing I reckon
(phone for scale and 1-uping)
@low harness We're about to put 3x2500mm2 alu into the ground 🙂
That's almost enough information that I should be able to guess where you are... but I mostly put cables into the sea.
Apart from the 2000 CU, I see 😉
So what's your guess?
Next time at work I'll shoot a few pics of our largest sea cables (I think it's a 3x2000 Milliken)
Is it for one of the ***Win farms?
Nope, transmission grid
Would it help if I say we're about to do a 1400MW interconnection ?
I'd allready guessed that. At 400 kV.
The North Sea Link (also known as North Sea Network Link or NSN Link, HVDC Norway–Great Britain, and Norway–UK interconnector) is a 1,400 MW subsea high-voltage direct current electricity cable under construction between Norway and the United Kingdom. It is a joint proje...
Close, one of the countries is correct 🙂 The interconnection is DC, due to the length and the two systems it connects
That's the same two countries.
Viking Link !
Viking Link is a planned 1,400 MW HVDC submarine power cable between Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, the United Kingdom and Revsing in southern Jutland, Denmark. The project is a cooperation between British National Grid and Danish Energinet. and is similar in capacity, completion...
How many links is the UK adding, they are installing a few and some already done.
I don't know how many 🙂 1400 MW is a serious amount of juice
2 to Norway (Both 1400 MW), 1 to Belgium (1000 MW) is already done, 2000 MW to France and 1000 MW to the Netherlands
"about to"? Shouldn't the installation start in like 2023?
"Construction work is scheduled to start mid-2020"
Well these projects takes a lot of time, so in that regard we are "about to" 😅
We usually spend a couple of years planning
A project I would love to see/make would be a discord bot command relay for HA. Anyone know if this is already a thing or?
anyone know some individually addressable christmas lights
holidaycoro.com has lots of options
i made a stranger things alphabet wall in my office using a strand of their lights and an arduino for our office decorating contest
I'm playing around with ws2811 waterproof strands from AliExpress
Like them so far, so ordered a few hundred more for next year
Was just reading https://selfhostedhome.com/christmas-tree-lights-using-wled
Yeah that is basically the ones I have
NOK 74.02 58%OFF | 5v 12mm led ws2811 pixel module 50 node/string digital rgb full color waterproof ip68 led string for letters sign
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/ePSuFzlW
Ordered 12 of these

Hmmm, curious off the wall question. Anyone know how, by chance, to get a SmartThings HUB to reload TP-Link Kasa devices, so I can get my hub to add a new plug and get that integrated into Home Assistant, so I can get it integrated into everything? LOL
I know HASS supports Kasa itself, but since I have the SmartThings hub, it already, itself, bridges things to HASS and to Alexa for me fairly well. 🙂
- Take SmartThing hub
- Work over with a hammer
- Find another solution
🤷
note that the smartthings integration is cloud-based, not local
the tp-link integration is local
I just noticed that. 🙂
Why bring the tplink into the smartthings anyway 🤢
So, yeah, I think I'll try it out, specifically. 🙂
Hmmm.... So, HASS isn't seeing my HS107 either, it seems.. Odd.
Funny thing. Alexa seems unable to understand the difference between Light and Lamp/.
probably on purpose
same for Google home. Annoying af...
well tecknikly a lamp refers to what most people call a "light bulb"
i mean, i also call it a light bulb, i'm not a weirdo
Here a lamp is name for a light, but a particular type of light (one that's free standing)
yup. stand lamp, floor lamp, table lamp, etc.
i mean the industry term for a "light bulb" is lamp
What would you call the things in a florescent fixture?
Right, I'm agreeing with you 😉
tube light 😛
longboi
My family used to work in lighting, so the lamp vs bulb thing is also an annoyance of mine
🤣
Heh
My brain says that a bulb is the actual thing that glows, and the lamp is fitting it goes in. A light can be either, or both
I had to name them more specifically. Front Lamp, Back Lamp. Within the Living Room group of lights. LOL
Evening Everyone, where can i ask questions about appdaemon? I notice that it has been moved to the archive.
@clever mortar yep, that's what i say too. just sharing the "technical" terms which is probably why google home/alexa acts the way it does
Annnnnnd... I removed TPLink from SmartThings, BTW.
@clever mortar psml. just noticed i'm already connected to the channel! Sorry. I'll grab the dunce hat!
Lol @median depot messaged me privately raging that noone answered him and He is not going to #330944238910963714 because He was not asking for support

That's a bit harsh, but K
Yes Master
Yoda pleased is
lamp is pretty clearly a "table/desk lamp" and I don't know why GH assumes it's a synonym with light...
A light lamp?
I'm not a native English speaker but to me those two are not the same thing
Trust me, I'm with you. That's just the industry term. I opened a can of worms with this one lol
Anyone using some kind of GPS pet tracker via HA
Cat or Dog @quartz ether
Dog. But pretty much same thing really
Samoyed so medium.
Should be okay. I'm not sure about particulars, but you probably want something with mqtt support
I would say a lot of them out there only talk directly with their cloud
You will need a sim. Some provide Sims as part of a monthly fee.
Yea we are NZ and nothing here is less than $300, Was planning on a cheap Chinese one, then something like Traccar to monitor
Otherwise any random mqtt banggood collar should work
Then you can just set it as a person
I'm not sure if you need traccar if you're using HA
My surface laptop 3 looks so much like a macbook
My brain thinks it's a mac and I keep trying to cmd key everything instead of control

@young sigil which way is that window facing
South-ish
Not so good for sun in the southern hemisphere but you can't have everything.
You could move the sun
sun: {% if state("sun", "north") %} south {% endif %}
Jinja2 is so verbose
{{ south if is_state("sun.sun", "north") else super nova }}
trigger:
- platform: state
entity_id: sun.sun
to: 'north'
action:
- service: sun.move

direction: south

Hey guys, I have a question regarding integrating a Relais switch for lights into HA, or to the hue bridge. It controls 2 lights which can be turned on and off currently with multiple wall switches. I need it to be remotely controllable :) is there hardware to add to my electronics in the house to make this work?
Or where should I ask this question? Thanks guys
Well, not here is a good starting point
As it's hardware... #diy-archived would be the obvious choice
Or if you want stock, start in #330944238910963714
Ok sorry then :)
The channel topics tell you what's on topic where 😉
New to discord ;)
You'll soon get used to it I'm sure
I could probably send you prints at cost of materials/shipping telco
unless I get lazy
@ocean mirage I almost went with an Ender 3, ordered a Prusa MINI instead
have to wait until march for them to ship 😦
Prusa are a fair bit more money yeah?
$370 for the mini
and then $120 shipping 😦
what do you plan to print with yours mostly?
Upgrades for my 3d printer obviously!
but seriously I got a few functional things I want to do first. first up is a bracket for my computer case to hang it under my desk with ratchet straps
one that holds it snug
Yeah that's the thing I struggle with. "I want a 3d printer!" - and what you gonna do with it? "Well, actually, no idea"
Print money! The solution is so simple

Anyone get this kind of thing in browsers that use ad based things that use location data? Oddly enough, it only popped up after starting ssl on my server. idk, I kinda like it tbh. pretty sure this means, ain't no-one have my location data via the ISP. Nice.
I hear /r/datahoarders calling

Oh nice, we're talking about making a trip up there and visiting 😄
I'm at AFRY, currently out as an external consultant for our state grid
I don't want to ping you tinkerer, but do you enjoy...this? discord, helping people get sh*t done? I got mad, MAD respect for all yall in here helping out. I'm off to make pancakes for the wife, its 4:30am and she's got work. another night chalked up to messing around with HA. lol. rip.
I got my cigarette counter done to 10 lol. Its an echo button. but it will be something better soon. I'm almost positive there was a better way to do that...instead of 12 automations 😄
Yes i do
Well, I enjoy helping those who're trying to learn... the help vampires not so much, but we don't suffer too many of those
What are 'help vampires'?
Can you help me understand? A description in excruciating detail where I don't have to make any effort would be great. Thanks.
Oh...
Every time I went to play a movie on my Kodi box the TV would switch to the wrong HDMI input. Spent ages trying to work out why my Home Assistant automation wasn't working right. It was the freaking Kodi CEC peripheral stuffing it up. Disable that and all is well.
Also I spent ages getting my Nvidia HDMI output to send 7.1 channels. Serious 4 hand furious keyboard hacking. Windows update has reverted it to stereo. Nice.
Tinkerer has still some faith in humanity
Other people

Well, looks like, for that price, I'm giving tap sensors a go with hass. probably start with something simple, but I'm mainly using them so I can hear when someone knocks when I'm in the basement. $40 for 4 knocki tap sensors seems good, but really it could be crap.
@limber stone Are you talking about those 3 pin tap sensors? The KY-031? Or is the Knocki tap sensor something different? I found 10 for only $6, but they might be different.
Ah yeah, found them now.
