You shouldn't upload your media which is most likely pirated or against the US law
They may still suspend your account based on inappropriate YouTube comment or even in last T&C when you don't click enough ads online
And plex also supports offline syncing to your device, which I use when I go traveling transatlantic
Just don't use that acc for anything else
I use it for mails and the Drive, that's it
Still quite a lot of hassle imo
Ofc, nothing is free and if you're an Admin you always want to try new stuff and improve. One thing leads to another IMO
I paid on eBay around 200 pounds for Dell R710 with dual CPU shitloads of ram, Nvidia quadro for transcoding and 6 3TB drives + SSD for OS
I use the same server, paid Β£120 for it, currently have 64GB ram and 12 cores, but I have 64GB more and 12 cores more laying around, and have 4x10 + 4x4 + 4x2 in it
It probably costs me around 20 pounds a month in energy bills + afair 15 pounds for Crashpln
No wait, I have the 510 the 710 was too noisy
So 35 pounds recurring cost, but I've got two different backups in that price
And both of you have a house to place that thing somewhere while neither of you has Gigabit and does heavy intensive external connections while on dual CPU boards and the most used CPU's for it lack heavily on single core performance?
And 350 one time (with a tape library )
I should replace it with a four socket 28 core per socket you mean @boreal pewter ?
Sure at some point one drive will fail, but then I will not just replace faulty one but upgrade all of them to 4TB which hopefully will be super cheap by then
π
@boreal pewter I'm keeping my servers in my loft
I have gigabit at home with unlimited G Suite storage, no where near as much data as you guys have.
@ivory jewel lol that goes fast if you want to. I already download dozens of stuff which I won't even watch just to have it
And as this is HA discord I must mention that my server is great at saving and transcoding live CCTV mptioneye footage. can yours do the same @boreal pewter ?:p
@nocturne aspen
I haven't such since it is no usecase. But my HA lays with 29 other Docker Container on my Deskmini with an Ryzen 5 3400g, 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 RAM and a 500GB NVMe SSD
While my CPU usage is 2% and average load 0.40
@clear ferry I thought you're in the UK?
No, Norway
But you don't see my drums or keyboards!

I have an AI project I want to work on which will need a lot of generic random video footage, could even be CCTV, as long as there's motion. Where do you guys suggest I get that sort of stuff?
Shodan *cough
My humble beginnings
That looked like my attic in 2002
lol that doesnt sound like a compliment π
I had dual socket pentium pros at the time
Any legal sources of video?
@ivory jewel unfortunately not many, which makes me a rebel
Games? Sure, you've got GOG & HumbleIndie. Ebooks, there's a plenty of non-DRM ebook sellers in my country.
But when it comes to music and movies, there's no way of legally buying content
I don't need specifically movies, just video footage
we are being prisoners of large entertainment corporations π¦
Of people and things moving around
doomed, our future generations are doomed, whole humanity is doomed when it comes to culture
I'm pretty sure google would throw the one or another result for "live webcam"
Is that even legal?
depends on a country you are living in i reckon
Ofc, usually every bigger town has a few live webcams from it's center which they are so proud of
Ah, got it, thanks!
Anyone else having issues with the unifi ui?
I can't seem to use their portal to hit my cloud key.
Eh. Right as rain, now.
I must have caught them on a bad day.
Zzz unifi π
Never used that lol
Also, I spent hours mitigating a DNS amplification attack yesterday -- tuning fail2ban. I was really dug in. Then it occured to me, "I bet all of this is UDP."
I blocked UDP 53 and it stopped. All that time I will never have back. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Idk how that can happen tho
On the plus side, my fail2ban leveled up like four times.
suck it, bots. . .

meh, I bet 90% of those are spoofed.
PS that is called basic security π
Nah, man.
DNS didn't used to be like this.
I would say a good 50-60% of traffic is Bogus shit. If not more.
It's a big problem.
That waste in efficiency isn't to be tolerated.
I mean /yes/ it should be designed such that it can -- but, yeah no.
I'd make it my life's work if being a security professional didn't mean going to work, checking a bunch of boxes, educating the business about GDPR, and hating life.
Of course -- I suppose everyone dreams of being red team and ends up running reports.
fucking reports.
anyway, yeah.
Drop UDP.
No, UDP for life
I do like muh streams.
You forgot bang head against desk due to the abject stupidity that people keep repeatedly doing
See when I said, don't do that. What I meant was don't do that
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Guards Scene

Setting up gsuite now @boreal pewter
Hello
I'm trying to write a script with jinja but I don't undesrtand how it works:
https://paste.koma.link/pudohaqoqa.jinja
Could someone point out what I'm doing wrong?
#330944238910963714 @hearty thorn
Good boy atxblyat
or should be something like that?: https://paste.koma.link/oqiyigemop.yaml
Again, #330944238910963714 @hearty thorn
i just noticed that hacks stopped working... where is the best area to try to troubleshoot?
HACS? #609399695466430465
thanks
Guess I'm the operator today
@scenic radish but he was specifically asking for his hacks and not for HACS
Ah. Come baaaaaaaaaaaaack
executing execution.exe

I'm still flabbergasted by the boxes of medication I saw in the pharmacy in the us
Like 1000 pill containers of ibuprofen
I should get a few of those with antacids
You should check out DENON link cable @scenic radish
audioperverts will pay anything for those HERTZES
@clever mortar it looks like PXE boot is coming before USB on the pi 4. Strange choice in my mind
Yeah... I don't understand that
Guys, which is the right place here for asking support about restoring hassio snapshots?
That'd be #330990055533576204
Just read the channel topics and they'll guide you π
Thanks a lot!
@clever mortar @scenic radish probably because of the cool shitkids running the 4-8 pi mounting stations to show off clusters are whining
@boreal pewter now I'm just missing getting freenas to mount the fuse as non root
strange.. even mounting it with root the directory is empty...
DOH
a single : let me down
and let me cry
like a clown
can I run rclone from two different machines to the same google drive with the same oath keys, or would I have to turn on team in rclone for that ? π€
Aye, it is different folders
in the same drive
it'll be nice to backup my docker persistant volumes
encrypted also
I have mounted the same dirs on 2 machines
Some of my accounts are being randomly targeted. I admittedly use not-as-good passwords on some non-critical accounts so sure enough, those are being targeted. Time to change some passwords...
Why can't we all just be honest, geez
I run randomly generated 32 char passwords per site mostly
lots dont accept that many characters :(
Iβm sure itβs been asked 1000 times but...can HomeAssistant or HomeBridge be used as a HomeKit Hub instead of an Apple TV/ HomePod/ iPad? I have a friend with only a garage door opener and Ecobee and he wants to use Siri outside his home network to control them.
Thanks
@clear ferry see? I'm the operator today
in training
I am the captain now.
Imagine a world where no one ever stole anything though
Even the politicians!
Would there be rich people without stealing?
Thats the other definition that matters

Looking to move from a raspberry pi. Testing libvirt using virsh. Test setup running on a Debian install in virtualbox. Bridged Network adapter. Since the virtual install is on the virtual debian.. it's also... bridged... Is this an issue? Bridge inside a bridge? The VM works, but I cannot get the VM inside the VM to work. I would try the VM on bare metal but I don't have a spare machine, although that's my next step.
VM host on bare metal, that is
anyone good with postman here?
i keep getting this error
"errmsg": "invalid_request, Missing grant_type parameter value"
}```
trying to post oauth2/token
The error sounds pretty self explanatory atleast π
yeah, i know but i've tried using both password and authorization code and that still pop out
But have you tried sending grant_type ?
got it working already. apparently, it won't work under raw but it's working when i tried x-www-form-urlencoded
thanks for trying to help π
More rando stuff from China,
woohoo! π
Mmmmm antennas
Almost all mail in Norway from banks and state and such are digital, so I get maybe 1 letter per month in my mailbox
The rest is packages from AliExpress
That and drugs
Wah
Been watching Matt Ferrell and he's realllly selling me the entire ecosystem
as Hass users, do we care that much about ecosystems though?
Only the one outside that can't be replaced.
...outside?
It has very high resolution.
Lol
This is bullshit
what do you mean control sun.sun?
So much to catch up with when leaving military sites
No discord or mail all day
Or even texts
It's like a mini holiday
I'm surprised you can go on military sites
With all those packages from china you receive
As long as I don't bring them to work!
to anyone who witnessed my networking troubles on saturday, i've decided tonight i'm gonna factory reset my router to clear the arp table since there appears to be no other way. also gonna switch from 192.168.0.0/24 to 10.0.0.0/24 since it's prettier and faster to type in lol
that doesn't require a factory reset but that's the time to do it
i'm already nowhere near 255 devices lol
Do it
i have, max, 25 clients on my network at any time
I lost 20+ devices after converting to docker
i think i've confused google wifi support lol. i asked if there's a way to clear the arp cache so i can maybe avoid factory resetting the router
how?
containers without the host networking flag will have their own address space within docker itself
or without macvlan or whatever
Because my vms had an IP each
yeah any docker container i've seen has an ip of 172.30.x.x or something
but anything outside that host isn't aware of those addresses
I should look at macvlan again
I see, thanks for patiently waiting. With regards to the ARP cache, we actually don't have access to it. Since the Google Wifi is uses network steering.
lolwut
Are you running them in bridge mode or not?
Zzzz
Then you should bridge
Because you don't lose mesh
Since you don't have it
But, you maybe don't have another router?
nope, i don't. just the modem and the google wifi
Zzzz
π€£
yeah, whatever. i didn't come here to be made fun of, jerks π
N00b plz h4xx0r
definitely considering getting that edgerouter x that villhellm mentioned
It's not unifi
I have that, it works, at least better than what I had
i have the edgerouter lite
That is a pretty major difference
lol i didn't want to get an out of support cisco router for my core π
Unifi is the platform that has all the BS
i just don't want to give up the possibility of mesh in the future π
but i suppose i could just use powerline ethernet and an AP if i really needed to and didn't have ethernet run throughout
Never seen anyone actually run ubiquity, but they probably aren't present much in the enterprise space
nah, its more "prosumer" or SBS gear
also powerline ethernet might as well just be straight-up magic
It is kinda hit miss
It's ok for non essential stuff if you actually have both ends on the same phase
Would never use it for servers or high bandwidth stuff
I'm using it with my security system since I want it in a different room than the router
yeah, exactly.
not much being transferred with the security system lol
That stuff sketches me out. And you can run into problems if you are running different power circuits
As with all things
perfectly balanced broken, as all things should be
oh atxbyea-san
lmao
Hope a new season of goblin Hunter comes soon
wut dat
Gr8 anime
ah, never really got into anime
good lord
Only happens in the first episode, the rest is normal boobies and violence
Scarred 4 life though
Like Game of Thrones?
Berserk is the weirdest anime I've watched. I don't know if I want to continue down the path of weird animes
Though I really liked Berserk
Berserk is great
been watching letterkenny lately
I'm really sad it isn't done for all the books
that show is hilarious
So I have to read the books
I don't like berserk's drawing tbh
Bleach is great if you haven't watched it
I agree on that
"how are ya now"
"good, 'n you?"
"not s'bad"
And Elfen Lied
Or kissxsis
Bleach is a good generic anime. It hits all the tropes
One piece is still great after 20 years
I liked this one quite a bit
Only the drawing of the enemies sucks a bit
Or try "Is it wrong to try and pick up a girl in a dungeon"
You are being summoned Azazel San is also fun
I watched angel beats last week
It's pretty good story
Is one piece worth starting?
The series called One Piece?
@azure peak yes
@willow coral already sounds like #330944238910963714 or #330990055533576204
Probably
[deleted]
nice, moved 0.6TB with rclone already
and I just moved all my jails from spinning drives to SSD
gr8 fun
Dont forget the limit
what was that again, 750GB per day ?
Yeah
yeah, I'm not gonna hit that yet, I only get 20-25MBps upload with crypt, and I do one folder at a time when I remember to check if the previous one is done π€£
can I see how much I've uploaded in the last 24 hours in some dashboard ?
Not sumed up I guess but in the Drive Board there is some list of recently uploaded
And at the bottom left your total
yeah I uploaded the first folder 20:00 yesterday, so if I just stick to that schedule of not increasing my size by more than 600GB before 20:00 next day I should be fine
Yup
I settled with 128bit for salt and crypt
should suffice well enough I guess
I guessed 1024 was overkill π€£
Idk what I have chosen
it was 64\128\1024 if memory serves right
I got strings that are as long as my notepad on 27" 1080p
π€£
I want RO User for it but seems not possible
I was moving my plex jail to the SSD and thought... this is taking too long
the plex jail was 200GB
I deleted video preview thumbnails
and it was suddenly 38GB
π€£
yeah...
If you serve plex through the cloud you will need many settings to do
he's cheating and using mergerfs
You still need many settings
lol
I host plex locally, and just map in my crypt volume into the plex jail directly
not need for that mergefs cheating
;-)
π
i use mergerfs because i use snapraid for lazy raid
its on my list to do better π¦
You still need Plex settings to not hit API limits
And rclone settings for proper 4k streaming
I'm only moving historic series into the rclone, stuff that hasn't been watched in a long time
so that shouldn't be a problem
Not suggestable still
or stuff I haven't gotten around to yet that is large π€£
the drive I see, but the plex wouldn't be affected π€
Well, every file you serve through the cloud. And that should be all
O.o
"zero line and fire wire" lmao
I first thought it was a weird external drive for a MacBook from the early 2000s
Oculus Rift S for sale. I ordered one π¦
Any reason I should go for ring/nest doorbell vs say a wyze cam?
You're comparing apples and tomatoes
at least they're both fruit
I meant with a switch or similar device as actual doorbell, I should be able to achieve the same thing? unless I'm missing something
Yup, just very different fruit
It all depends on what your goal is. If you want real time two-way audio that would be difficult to recreate with wyze.
I see 2 way audio on Wyze cam page but I don't have experience on either.
I see that Wyze already have it on roadmap. I'll just wait I guess.
gross
Does anyone have experience with the Freecom mSSD as boot device with a Raspberry Pi 3b+? Looks like a sleek little SSD; https://www.freecom.com/product/mssd-128gb-usb-3.0-56330/
Unless aethetic is important. I don't see why to choose that over regular SSD which $90 can get you 1TB.
Or just get a refurbished usff computer :D
I don't think rpis are appropriate for read/write intensive jobs
X86, sata ssd, i5 i7, 4-16GB of ram, real gigabit, internal PSU, etc
For the similar real world price of a rpi setup
Where?
Ebay, refurbishers etc
Dell Optiplex 9020 usff is a good option
It's big but it's not that big
Size of a big book
New to this Discord thing. New to home Automation .... but have some questions. Is this the place to get some info from knowledgeable people?
depends on your question. anything home assistant related should go to #330944238910963714
if it's not related to home assistant you're good here
the channel topics will help guide you if you're ever not sure
@clever mortar @cunning pewter @clear ferry my router seems to have stopped having a fit about that particular IP address. didn't need to factory reset. changed my network to 10.0.0.0/24 while i was at it too
Tinkerer is away for 4h 5m 13s with a message :point_right: He'd been wrong, there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and it was an oncoming dragon.
Well I'm not seeing what I'd think is an appropriate thread or hashtag.
I am wanting to use smart switches and outlets. Currently, looking at the big box home improvement stores. HomeDepot and Lowes but in looking at the devices they carry and calling a few of the manufacturer's support lines it seems that those switches ONLY work if you use an APP.
What are my options, device wise, for NON APP, NON CLOUD devices?
I'm fine with if I need to go to ZWave or ZigBee ....
z-techs are basically the only ones that can do non-app/cloud
as far as ready-made devices go at least
@supple bison basically all the smart outlets use either wifi, zigbee or zwave
If they're wifi they're most likely rebadged tuya oems
Which have gotten harder to reflash
Easiest in my opinion is probably ikea tradfri if you can get it
@wet pilot Thanks,
So ... now seeing your reply I search HomeDepot for a zigbee switch and find this one .. https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Zigbee-In-Wall-Energy-Monitoring-Smart-Switch-45856GE/300335928
Not looking ATM if the description mentions HassIO ... will this particular device be controllable by HassIO?
Zigbee works well, which includes tradfri
you would need to get a radio of some sort
And you can buy a ready made antenna/sniffer off the HA forums
Which is easiest for most people
Zigbee2mqtt works really really well
@wet pilot Yeah ... I get that I'd need a gateway device.
Search for cc2531 antenna on forums
Zigbee2mqtt is the software
Cc2531 is the gateway
@hushed basalt yup got that
And then it works directly with any ZigBee device without cloud
similar for zwave
I just want to start at the moment to be able to put 3 or 4 of these switches / outlets in and then DIY my own interface
and by interface ... I'm hoping a web page interface
that's what HA is for
ok ... well looks like this will be my path .... time to pony up some change for couple switches and outlets ..... and then learn raspberrypi and Hass
Tp-link at least has local control of their plugs
You do need internet to set them up initially though I believe
Yeah any device that uses a local hub should be local
But sometimes they lock you out, and they all definitely use telemetrics back to the mothership
Yeah. That's why I have some devices set up as LAN only on my router π
Anyone have any recommendations for a laptop ~15" mostly productivity workload with a little photoshop. Budget $1500-2000 AUD. I've been looking all afternoon and am more confused than ever.
The Surface Laptop 3 is 30% off at HN. But I still don't think it's good value.
Last years Dell XPS 15, Asus Zenbook Flip 14-inch Ryzen 5 and ThinkPad L390 Yoga are what I'm considering. I think.
@young sigil I have a four year old Dell XPS 13 which is finally getting battered enough that I'm considering an upgrade, and I'll stick with the Dell XPS
Well that's good to hear.
i7 with 16GB of RAM. The only thing I really don't like about the XPS series is that the speakers are crap compared to the speakers on my work Macbook Pro.
So, it's almost permanently paired with a JBL speaker thingy.
Speakers aren't an issue. I'll be using headphones most of the time.
That's my only criticism of the XPS nullified so π
When the baby sleeps til 0800

I try to benchmark it my Kubernetes Pods keep dying before finishing it
But it looks pretty good and the setup is just so easy
In regards I yet failed twice with 2 different guides on setting up Gluster Heketi
Which is far away from a simple setup
When it is time to replace the tips
Just the tip. And only for a minute.
π€£
found a shop that sold them for $10 instead of the $25 I found on ebay
so I ordered 3 at once
should cover me for the next 6 years
since the first lasted atleast 2 years π€£
When you learn how to solder :p
It's like rotating the tyres on a car driven by a gorilla.
There's no point
I need a soldering iron
I want the JBC compact mmm
I can totally recommend TS100. I use it more than my metcal.
TS80 is probably ok too, if you're into usb-c...
I just wish the technology was there yet so it could actually be wireless
with an internal rechargable battery
Or am I misunderstanding that it actually is ? π€
good, then I'm not a tool π€£
That's the thing. TS100 is a soldering station, in a smaller-than-normal-soldering-iron form factor.
I'm not sure how the long tip handles precision work though
Very valid concern.
I don't do much SMD with it.
But it weighs next to nothing. So with a good, soft cord it's not too bad really.
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
This sort of level stuff
And I think the 80 is a bit shorter?
Yeah but that usb connector would be a pita if you ask me
Like the ts100 looks to me like a long pencil that you hold half way back
Also it's quite small
In terms of how it would feel to hold for two hours
Or at least an hour. Especially with my big hands
That video made me realize I should invest in some really good side cutters...
But I'd say it's sufficient for that kind of work. I often use the same pinky-support trick.
Then again, if you're looking at hours of work, JBC is probably a better bet. Or at least a good Weller.
Why is there no #creator-connection with @low harness discussing soldering irons with Phil and Rohan ?
Norway is the shittiest low price market, instead of a proper black Friday they give us 10% discount a whole week, then they put a limited number of items for 30-50% discount on Friday, and pretend that is ok since we get 10% all week, usually on clearance items or other bullshit
And usually they up the prices two weeks before, so usually it isn't a discount at all
That sucks. But what really sucks is when your bday is December 1st.

@clear mirage i know a girl who has birthday on December 24th
@clear ferry Yea my uncle is Dec 25th. The annoying part is that i'll get a bbunch of money from my grandparents, but then I have car/home insurence due in jan so there goes all that money. December bdays suck.
Wait, you only pay insurance once per year?
Yea i pay it yearly. Get a little bit of discount that way. $2200 for car home is 1200
That sounds totally unpractical
I think I pay $2000 per year for three cars, but with monthly deposits
No wait, I only have two cars now, got rid of the last one
What sucks about Michgian is that we have some the highest insurance rates in the country, becuase wee're a no-fault state
I will never understand murica, different prices per state sound bonkers
yea it is. then on top of that medical coverage is also included in that too.
They just recently did a way with it but it used to be that if you got in a accident and were injured, you had lifetime medical coverage
Had to check, i pay $150 per month for both cars, 20k miles on one, and 15k miles on the other, with full coverage including engine and transmission failure on the wife car
thats not bad. yea ive had a couple accidents in my impala, and just on saturday i hit my first deer.
Yeah, I haven't had an accident in... 16 years
Nice. yea havent had much luck lately in that department.
@clear ferry so what do you think of the Tesla truck?
that thing is the ugliest "truck" in existence lmao
it looks like something an N64 rendered
Yea looks something you would see in GoldenEye
my thoughts exactly
Cant belive they got 146K orders
they could put a tesla badge on a bag of dog shit and people would buy it
and rave about it being the best bag of dog shit ever
Loll. So true. Tesla is like the Apple of cars.
what i'm wondering is how they;re going to do the packaging for that thing.
Elon Musk isn't a healthy role model
Mans a workaholic without focus or work/life boundaries
He's one bad acceident away from being a supervillian
Man needs to learn to delegate
Yup. Cant control everything.
Tesla in general is shite imo, I don't enjoy the design of any and the ride comfort is terrible @clear mirage
Our state subsidizes them though, so we hardly pay any tax on them, we pay 1/3 of what the rest of Europe pays
@hushed basalt Elon Tusk!
ah i've never had the chance to ride in one, but there was a $7500 credit that was through the fed if you bought one but thats good only up until so many cars have been produced, and i belive they have surpassed that so no more credit.
Lol. Rick and Morty is a bit more miss than hit
@clear mirage think I saw the full specced ludicrous edition for less than $60000 used recently
@clear ferry lol thats not bad, what year?
Wow that really is a good deal.
when do you even sleep
I guess Telsa is good
Because it forces the real manufacturers to get off their arse
The story about the Tesla launch in Norway is one of my favourite tech stories...
I'm surprised they could import an electric car into Norway
I would have thought all those fossil fuel exports would have blocked all the ports
πΊ
I think I mentioned a few weeks ago that close to 50% of all new cars sold in Norway are electric
Wow thats interesting. Hows the charging infastructre though
But how much is it in freedom money @hushed basalt
@clear mirage decentish they say
I'd love an electric car
But they shouldn't be so expensive
Plus I'd rather not drive
I drove my first electric in 2003 it was shite
@clear ferry ah. at least its there
I'd much rather have nice clean self driving car pooling
Peugeot partner electric
No parking, no driving, no cost of ownership
You sound like an Iain M Banks novel
The beauty about being in automotive packaging is that as long they keep building cars their is stiil a need for packaging
Looks like I'm going for two more jobs in Sweden now
Because the Swedes are too busy

I'm not a Detroit Lions fan but this very much true.
could also do similar for the Leafs
the sad part is that the Ford family has owned the Lions since 1963. Bought them $4.5 million. 1 playoff game game in nearly 50 years
I don't see this particular model in the list, but it's still possible
tuya-convert is so damn cool. how tf do people come up with this shit
Too much time on their hands and the desire to live in the "future"
I can confirm these are Tuya-convertabl. I have several of these blubs. What ive been doing is using ESHome with them. But you have to watch though - some have the my92x1 chips and some are PWM
Ah. Yea ill put tasmota on them, use the AI light templete then upload the ESPHome binary. The diffusers are pretty easy to take off
I bought one 4 pack and they had the my 92x1 chip, then a couple weeks later buy the same 4 pack and those ones are PWM
I'm not a huge fan of smart bulbs. I think I'll stick to strips if I want RGB somewhere
i went with philips hue because the first apartment i moved into didn't have overhead lighting in the living room or bedroom
I use them in some of my my lamps
only switch-controlled outlets
then i liked the ecosystem so much i stuck with it. no overhead lighting in the bedrooms or living room of the condo i'm in now
My gf apartment is the same way. I cant stand it. I hate not having overhead lighting.
i'm actually ok with it. lights from a lower position like table lamps have a more relaxing feel
overhead lighting is task lighting in my mind
I agree with putting them in lamps. We did that at our apartment as well. No overhead lighting was the worst
That was the only reason I ever owned Hue stuff
i actually have a pair of wall sconces in the living room, but i only turn those on if i need task lighting
otherwise it's just the table lamps by the couch
We had lights in the hallway and kitchen, none in the living room or bedrooms
Yea i also have them on my exterior garage lights just to go with my LEDs
at my gf thats her set up- kitchen, hallway are where the lights are
that reminds me... i should update my "lights on when alarm disarmed at night" automation to turn the living room lights red and green for a minute before going to the normal scene
for the season
I have to put up Christmas lights this weekend. And of course I didn't actually get the stuff I planned to get after watching a bunch of DrZzs videos. So it will be mediocre Christmas lights again this year π
the annoying thing is that i have this style light fixture on the garage and its pain in the arse to change the bulb - https://www.amazon.com/EMART-Exterior-Fixtures-Anti-Corrosion-Waterproof/dp/B075CK4ZM4/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=exterior+light+fixtures&qid=1574782106&sr=8-9
if it makes you feel better @unreal orbit i only put up a strand of icicle lights on my balcony lol
@unreal orbit but the nice thing is with the LEDs once you put them up you nver really have take them down
they're not even smart so i have to plug and unplug them
like some sort of animal
Smart plugs are so cheap though! You could slap a sonoff on there for like 5 bucks
tru, i should just get another set of cheap plugs to tuya-convert lol
the pair i flashed recently ended up being $3/each
@clear mirage yeah that's what I'm planning on doing, so I have to make sure the installation is pretty much perfect. Which requires a bunch of time that I've been too lazy to devote
plus it's going to be like a $500 project, which I don't really have at the moment
Lol ah time. I just got the stick on ons for now. what sucks though is that when you get off at 5 this time of year, leaves very little daylight to get anything done
Exactly π¦
I've been using these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M8GKBJM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and running them using WLED
How is the waterproofing? Have you had any rain since putting them up?
(or snow I guess)
Well Ithey've been up since Halloween and the waterproofing seems to be holding up so far. One thing though about the adhesive backing, once its on you better have it in the right place
Yea its 3M brand stuff, and if you happenn to remove it really doesnt stick all that well again
Do you regret just getting RGB and not RGBW? Or has it been good enough for what you wanted?
There's a few places i have clip, mainly around where i have strip conncetors.
RGB has been fine for what i want, since i really dont plan on using a white channel
I would recomend 12v though becuase you get less voltage drop.
I picked up an RGBW strip and honestly the way I use the stip the W just ends up complicating things. I like the option of having white, but I'm not sure it's worth it now
I don't think I'd have any reason to have white light all around my house, but future me might find a reason. I always worry about future me being frustrated at past me
Lol, hindsight is alwys 2020,. WTF did i do that?
Trapped in the car with my 2-year old asleep...
@unreal orbit try that, but with RGBCCT instead
these are the connectors i've been using - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS76T56/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I'm using a 12v 30 amp power supply, and with the 12v LEDs the only voltage drop i noticed was towards the left side of peak, about 900 LEDs or so.. Solved that by injecting power from the other end
At 900 LEDs you should get large drops after just a short length
they're 12v LEDs, each 16ft strip has 300 in it
Total LED count is about 1200
btwe anyone use mcmaster-carr or anything? https://www.mcmaster.com/
McMaster-Carr is the complete source for your plant with over 580,000 products. 98% of products ordered ship from stock and deliver same or next day.
We use them at work
Same here, thats how i found out about them I'll use them for stuff like wire and connectors, theyere shipping is actually better than prime
900 LEDs at full blast is 54A, no way that doesn't give large drops
They're usually pretty expensive on stuff, but the quality is good
@honest geode these are the LEDs I'm using - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07M8GKBJM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@unreal orbit i agree they can be pricey on some stuff, like casters for example.
But as far stuff like wire and connectors go theyre pretty reasonable
I've never really considered using them for my personal stuff, I might take a look there next time I'm doing a project
Yea at my old place i was building a model railroad in my basement and I would by stuff from there all the time. Plus if you place an order before 4p, est you get it next day
also not a bad place to get hardware too
We'll I've literally have done nothing so far at work today
@clear ferry What did you break: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-a00092491en_us
So over the weekend my gf and watched Christmas Vacation (shes never seen it) and a thought crossed my mind, wonder what the electric bill would be for all those incadescent bulbs
Ha
In Norway if you see a house with 400 LEDs that is huge
So American houses during Christmas is insane
You can easily spot any American people living in Norway
I bought a 50 chain of ws2812
Will play with it and probably buy a few hundred for next Christmas
I'm wanting to put together a mini version of something like this later
Here it is β My 2017 Halloween Light Show featuring the music of The Nightmare Before Christmas! Want this sequence? Get it today at https://magicallightshow...
i got some those for my tree. I have a pre-lit tree but most of the orginal bulbs aren't working .
that looks cool. I dont thinki'm going to do anything in the yard. I do have a couple wreaths that i'm also going to put LEDs on
i think he uses state lighting software to control that
@clear ferry so you have become muricanized
It's sunny and 50 here
I'm from the north, so I'm used to snow in September, and 10+ feet, so this is quite disappointing
lol yea we never get that much down here where i'm at (about an hour north of Detroit). Now when you start talking about the Upper Pensuiusla, there they get that kind of snow.
I'm from the 69th parallel north
ah, yup i'd say your up there.
Do we generally have a good deals link collection on this discord for HA stuff with Black Friday?
When people share stuff they usually do it here
Critical Firmware Upgrade Required ... to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of Operation

atleast that is a pretty big number
not like the 99 days of the brocade firmware bug a few years ago π€£
Yeah, it's just... bit overflows... really π
Don't forget Windows crashing at 49.7 days...
hey, don't mix me in with people like ludeeus, villhelm and tediore

I think my first computer had Windows 3.something
I used it for basically nothing because that's all it was good for to me as a child
Back when computers were that sweet beige color
I had a commodore 128, but I used to hack the computers at my fathers workplace to run games, they were running windows 3.11 mostly
tuning of autoexec.bat and config.sys to make as much memory avaliable as possible
just to start those sweet games
My first computer... was a long long time ago. Long before Windows
Well... hard disks weren't an option until ... I think it was my fourth computer
Not "too expensive" - not available
as long as the bootloader is on a floppy, who needs a harddrive !
Floppy disks... computer number three

The flip side is that having grown up with all of this developing, it seems to make it easier to actually understand technology
None of the new recruits, even the technical ones, seem to actually understand the guts of the stuff they're working on - to them it's all magic
agreed, just the generation that came after me that didn't experience jumpers or addressing seems to be rubbish with hardware troubleshooting in my experience
we hired a guy that was 13 years younger than me a few years back, had to let the guy go because he didn't understand why drivers weren't updated when he booted on a driver\firmware update disk, even though I explained it to him five times
It's like the difference between the guy at the garage who can use the wrench, from the one who actually knows how things work, and why that sound means something important, yet that similar sound is irrelevant
the same guy drove 25km with the handbrake on and didn't understand why it smelled funny... so might have just been the guy
when all you have is hardware, you learn to understand the hardware
I had two apprentices when working up north, that were 5-7 years younger than me, they were useless aswell, told the boss not to hire them after ended apprenticeship
one ended up as a drug addict (he played wow 24\7 and I actually had to block wow at work to get him to work) and the other guy became a lawyer
not sure who got the worst end of it
the drug addict is dead though
Hmmm, that makes it tough
I would still say the lawyer
The lawyer gets to deal with idiots every day... not unlike helpdesk staff
i had a feeling i was mentioned earlier...
but not pinged
spidey senses tingling
One of my collegues quit the other day, which means we are just 7 guys in country now, and he worked on 2 products that I work on, so now I have even two more products that I am the only one in country who works with π€£
Dear boss, more money or else
but I just got a 20% raise....
Ah...
can I ask for... MORE ????
Dear boss, more time off or else
π€£
always
but I have 44 unused vacation days this year.. I don't need more time off...
LESS TIME OFF
π€£
goodness
Day a week, for ... the next year or two
yeah I'm doing that now with the paternity leave, I have 88 days left, going to take 1 day a week for the next 1.5 years
nice to hear I'm not along accumulating days π
I should come to this discord more often to read those conversation ^^
ahah
I've a friend that accumulated enough banked holiday and time that he could take 3 months off to travel, and still had multiple weeks left
Is he a working in a french administration π€
I "only" managed 2 months...
Amazing what happens when you can bank time, and accumulate 10 days a year, plus get overtime you can bank
I have 44 days, and will get 25 new days at new years, so that is 69 days, which is 3.5 months off
More if you link up public holidays right π
Nice
And if I get another child while my wife is still doing her masters I get 40 more weeks of paternity leave added to my balance π€£
plus 26 weeks from work
I have accumulated about -20 days since starting 5 years ago π
is that MINUS 20 days ?
yes
wtf
ahah
π€£
I didn't get paid for 20 days that I took off
I haven't had an unpaid day in my working life
My honeymoon was about half of that, the rest are single days here and there
I've volunteered, but never had a day I should have been paid for, but wasn't
Even these days, if I work a day at the weekend I'll recover the time later
that feeling, when you don't know what to add to your HA at a given time....
All of the things
Start working on a Holodeck. That should kill quite a bit of time
I've only had 130 hours of overtime this year
lowest I've had in 12 years
highest year was 720 and normal has been 400-500
Overtime... I remember those days
I'm curious what do you work in ?
that would be on top of the on call hours I've had, which are ((16x5)+(24x2))x11
but there is no on call anymore, so that sucks

I wish I had a smart stove
Because I would like the lights to go up when we are cooking
but I don't see any good ways of achieving it automatically, so I implemented a smart switch for now
stove? thats heat - so thats IR
but I'm going to renovate my kitchen soon anyway
I have... 30 + about 9 or 10 public holidays
@scenic radish all norwegians get 25 days by default if you are working full time, plus my employer gives me 2 extra every year
Sucks to be in the USA π
next year will have 9 holidays
"unlimited" - so 2?
we have 12 self diagnosed sick days per year, with 3 in a row maximum at a time
the rest we need doctors notices for
Oh I think I have that. "Unlimited" as in take 1 and you are unemployed?
but I haven't had a sickday in 10 years
Yeah, up to 3 days is "self cert" here, over it requires a doctors note
But, no real limit on the self cert days
You take the piss and your boss and/or HR will have a chat, but otherwise... π€·
I know somebody who ended up taking about 20% of the year off sick, between one thing and another. It was all justifiable, so work was fine with it
@clear ferry most decent employers in Norway provides 24 days of sick leave these days (up to 8 days x 3 times)
really ?
I wouldn't know as I don't do sickdays π€£
I was sick three days in 2008
Yep, but all are still allowed to offer the same "perks" at free will without any agreement
@clever mortar @unreal orbit nah, my work is cool about sick days. as long as you don't abuse them you're fine
yeah they're actually very good

I CAUGHT A SPAMMER GUIZE
man i missed u guys
Hey, not sure if this is the right channel to ask in, but I'm looking for opinions on the best WiFi or zwave switches with energy monitoring these days. I already have some WeMo and kasa switches, but when I went to look at reviews for their energy monitoring switches on Amazon they looked pretty bad. I'm also not sure if energy monitoring is more likely to work in HA via zwave rather than a WiFi switch, but I would assume that's the case. Any thoughts?
What sort of spam did I miss out on
Oh how boring
I thought someone posted Trump's tax returns or something :D
I posted those earlier and they were removed :/
Sneaky Trump
@odd mason but what happened to your avatar, you're just a yellow blob now

unf Freenas 12 getting closer
and with that probably RAIDz expansion in the near future
and maybe even KVM replacing bhyve which is not the best hypervisor I've seen π€£
UnRaid. So much easier π
Although I'm not a fan of the mergerfs/snapraid concept
And ceph is too complicated and it's distributed only
ceph zzzz
UnRaid.... literally plug and play
Dual
BTRFS zzzzz
Also closed source is a dealbreaker for me
Yeah that's a bit iffy
and you have to pay to use unraid π€
Does unraid have copy on write, self healing etc
I don't mind paying, unless it's enterprise level pricing
I would have to pay the top dollar for my setup, not interested
its like $90 one off
You could just have less data cough datahoarder cough
$129 for the top one
UnRaid is free for 6 weeks. Give it a go, it is actually the best for simplicity and use. Drive fails just put in a new one and it repairs. Data is also emulated during the rebuild so no down time.
Let's trade
Although I have 8 hours and 8 minutes of work left until I'm officially unemployed
Can't wait
I have been continuously working since I was 9 years old, except one year in college when there was no jobs avaliable
no idea what I would do if I didn't have a job π€£
I am playing with a FreeNas setup at the moment to see if I can make use of it as a plug and play storage for someone. But just setting it up is a pain.
FreeNAS has a high threshold, but I prefer that to paying, closed source, limited software π€£
also I've learned a lot of BSD from it, so that is great for my worklife \ paycheck also π€£
UnRaid has WAY more plugins and apps then FreeNas
I don't use plugins, I create jails and install software π€·
Docker containers....
Those are hosted on another box π
I asked in #general-archived but it's kinda quiet in there.. anyone have experience with those MyQ garage door controllers?
What he said sooo many ways to do it for fraction of the cost
I always forget about discord search. Chat feels so temporary
Worth searching the forum too
the myq is $20, if there's no other fees that's worth the price of entry imo
And ... remember it's a cloud integration - when their service goes down you lose control
I run a Wemos D1 Mini with a reed sensor and a relay, plus 230-5v step down converter, so all in all it cost me $5 to make
i dont even have my garage door opener paired with my remote correctly at the moment haha
Lol...
i dont even park my car in there, i have a big driveway so the garage is becoming my workshop
but the entry is on the side and the garage door is easier to access π
I have a big garage, but only one door, so it is one car+datacenter+studio+workshop
I have room for 9 cars in my driveway though
my garage is an old barn, so it's huge with an unused upstairs, an unused office, and probably 2.5 cars of space... only one motorized door, the other is the old fashioned swing out double doors
been getting into woodworking so trying to make the space out there nice
guess I'll pass on that myq for now lol
9 cars is quite the space
Can't get all of it in one shot
Did a bean bag burst in your driveway?
You guys have CD's and CD drives?
I burned a CD just the other day.
I still use them once a year for some legacy systems
Still remember driving around with a 96cd folder back in 2002
Like the UBCD?
No, music for the drive π
An entire 62GB worth!
Watch out
I rememeber those days
