as you can see the GOP is winning world wide
They just had to use those colors. hopefully 45 doesnt see this
There is a talk about Home Assistant in Oslo Norway in 2 hours and streamed online: https://www.nuug.no/adict/mgroup.php#201911120NUUG https://www.nuug.no/live.m3u
And nobody invited me or @light trout ?
or @scenic radish ?
No muricans were seen π
Or is..... @light trout the interview object of the live stream?
I hope not?
Meh there are people there
People π€’
Never heard of this nuug before π€
Is my age a joke to you?
sounds like it
also atx, someone at work moved here from russia and i'm tempted to show him the russian turbo polka you shared a few weeks ago
i bet he'd find it funny
π
@clear ferry 10 min
Anyone here using HassOS on a NUC and have bluetooth problems? I don't know if that a problem from the NUC, or HassOS, or HassIO oder HA but about every 10th restart I lose connection to all of my bluetooth devices (thermostats, plant sensors and light bulbs) at once and have to restart HA again. The life of my plants is relying on bluetooth. What do you think could be the cause? Save my plants!
All 15 sensors not available: https://imgur.com/a/UsU0DBT
do you know where it breaks? i.e. does the bluetooth still work but it lost the sensors or is there no bluetooth at all
good question. It's broken right now. How would you check that?
in the os the bluetooth is usually seen as some kind of serial device,
/config bluetoothctl devices Device 78:A5:04:7B:1A:CB Avea_CB1A Device 4C:65:A8:DC:8C:95 MJ_HT_V1
This are not all but at least a few devices that should be connected to HA
and the specific device node may be changing
see if there's an entry in /dev/serial/by-id
otherwise, #330990055533576204
β ~ ls /dev/serial/by-id usb-dresden_elektronik_ingenieurtechnik_GmbH_ConBee_II_DE1962129-if00
That's my ConBee Stick
hmm
FYI I use the SSH Addon to execute this commands. Is the bluetooth devices only visible to HassOS?
#330990055533576204 can help you with HassOS and Hass.io related questions π
Strictly speaking, any HA related question is off topic in this channel π
thats why we talking about the os beneath
#tinkerered
HassOS still belongs in #330990055533576204
@clever mortar Maybe it's my bios π¦ My last big "HA Problem" was a very bad Firmware on my SSD!
Mh mh maybe proper device will help?
@Anon The bluetooth chip build-in if that tip was a bettet bluetooth stick
do you just don't like NUCs or are implying that my NUC got a problem?
I just dont like nucs overall
NUC, old laptop, it's all more powerful, and less likely to fail by burning out the SD, than running on a Pi π
Indeed
That's why I switched from Pi π
im running on a hp dl380, that isnt overkill is it π
π
Anybody got a spare voucher for a 36C3 Ticket? π«π

This is the if I ask on every server I'm on somebody may say yes approach?
From my response to them on another server

@clever mortar them?!
Well, I don't know your gender
If I assume you're a him, that's potentially rude
I mean, I'm assuming you're sentient, but that's as far as I'll push it
i am a male ππβοΈ
Hello fellow humans. My name is ERROR: variable name is not defined. What is your name?
fellow human? I'm not assuming anybody here is actually human...
(that includes me)
I'm actually a dolphin... so long and thanks for all the fish π
@smoky oxide 380 you say, just a mini server, you should migrate to a Superdome X or a synergy frame
@clever mortar it is true, you enjoy raping dead stuff and laugh manically π
In polite circles that's called happy recycling
that's a yikes from me dawg
I've built many a system from components taken from dead things computers
@scenic radish that is what dolphins usually do
true @clear ferry , but the hp:s are cheap on fleabay
Just like all koalas are riddled with Chlamydia @scenic radish
No
so you've made love with lots of koalas then huh?
Yes, after the dolphins were done with me
@smoky oxide HPE or bust π
Lenovo for the built in monitoring "solutions"
someone once told me they don't like dolphins, otters, etc. because they do stuff like that and it's wrong. i responded with "but they have no sense of morals at all..."
Could be worse, could be Orcas
Hey, you look good to eat. Ah, we're bored now, you can just bleed to death
damn nature, you crazy scary
Says the human...
yeah we're a messed fucked up species aren't we?
That's the most optimistic look at it I've heard
how's that? π
That the human race is only fucked up π
π
Or hang themselves... but so far not quite
That's... relatively reasonably priced
I'm quite tempted by https://twinkly.com/special-edition/
The wife would probably kill me... but... π€€
Her facial expression makes it look way more plastic-y
love how obviously photoshopped that image is lol
Yeah... they're expensive, but...
RGB+WW π
These broadcast lights at work have 6 colours
R, G, B, sorta-R, sorta-G, sorta-B?
Red blue green amber cyan lime
interesting... what benefit does that offer?
I think it's to do with colour gamut
Want
ah i guess more pastels maybe?
I don't understand the science
@clear ferry that's kinda cool
But basically rgb isn't enough for high quality
In what channel would a question about theming fit?

Colour is complex
You can simplify it
We should just convert ourselves to black and white
by dropping the u
better not let Tinkerer see that π
truthfully, I could not say
rofl
I'm going to buy a weller soldering station
The 1010
It seems the hakko is better except for the awful awful control system
hakko-in-docker
haven't heard of hakko. I've never had any issues with weller though
Weller 1010? Ha: https://youtu.be/XUtj-bWHeKY
Weller responds to the magic smoke escaping from their WE1010 soldering station, and the lack of a primary side mains fuse. Prepare to be awestruck at their ...
I picked up a Hakko FX-888D for $175 recently. No issues with it.
Yeah I've flip flopped
I think I'll just spend more and get the JBC
$600 once vs $200 then getting frustrated and buying the $600
As they say, buy nice or buy it twice
buy once cry once
Lol
I find soldering is a very frustrating thing
Especially small cable assembly which I intend to get into
Anything that can take a 60 minute frustrating job to a 30 minute pleasant job is extremely valuable
Yeah saving yourself frustration is worth a lot
I basically only solder for guitar pedals and guitars themselves so its dead simple stuff
I've never soldered before
But I'm considering learning because I have an Xbox controller I'd like to fix
Do you know what's wrong with the controller
Something like that may be a difficult first project
I assume it's all SMD stuff
yeah, surface mount stuff is a pita to repair
Especially without the right tools
Which would cost as much as 100 xbox controllers lok
One of the analog sticks just needs replacing
It actually didn't look too bad
But yeah it might not be worth it lol
gah, aliexpress is fucking with me, desktop website doesnt load the cart and then i try to click the items to buy and check out on mobile it does a system error
JBC make very nice irons. Still my favourite though: Metcal.
thats one hella essay your working on bud
Maybe a cat is kneading his keyboard?
or left an extra char in the text box and discord hasn't given up yet
@unreal orbit @wet pilot I'm happy to confirm that, in person, when talking with another native, I can be incomprehensible to those who ain't be from around here π
rofl
awwrightpal howreyedayin
need to update that image for π¦πΊ English (inverted)
oof
though can't say much as there are definitely places in the US with worse
i have 1G though
My ping is lower... but so is my download speed
And that's me on the fastest I can get...
I think 95% of Norway can now get 10Mbit or higher
Which is pretty good considering our geography
Yeah
But you can bet those last 5% are FOOKIN PISSED
Yeah, same challenge here
Parts of the UK where a phone line itself is all you can hope for, you ain't even getting DSL
It's not "cost effective" to get them broadband, but they're trying
@light trout was the Norwegian home assistant webcast any good?
@clever mortar Like my mil, she had 7km to the nearest phone Central, so no hope for anything except ISDN, so she's had mobile broadband for years, but coverage sucks, but now out of the blue she got 500/500 fiber with TV included π
Not too bad, was annoying not to be able to comment π
Was it recorded?
Not that I'm aware of
Poop
Hax

@leaden adder which NUC do you have? I have similar issue with my MiFlora sensor and NUC. Had no issues previously when I used a ESP32 board to read the values
@orchid rose a J3455
Iβm having other Bluetooth devices like light bulbs that got now easy βBluetooth to Mqttβ Converters π¦
@hushed basalt Yeah, too pricey for personal use but got work to kit out all the benches with them.
I'm on a D54250WYK. It takes about 1-2 days for HA to lose the connection to the MiFlora and it doesn't come back without reboot
also I'm using Ubuntu so it's probably not a Hassos issue if they are related
bluetoothctl scan finds the flowercare device, but HA doesn't seem to care
@young sigil do you think standard jbc is a good middle ground
USB c is a bit of a train wreck hey
Was supposed to be a single port, connector and standard to rule them all
You should have seen the beta stuff for USB3 @hushed basalt
But you've got usb 2 and usb 3 usb c cables, some devices need a QC 3 with a USB A connector, others need a usb c PD source, some cables work on some chargers on some devices. Heaps of damaged devices even from big players like Google and Samsung and RPi
At least it wasn't released
My S8 has a usb 2 speed port while my S5 has usb 3
Consumers use fibre on their toslink ;)
Even if it's the christmas tree light equivalent of fibre transmission
@hushed basalt it's an excellent iron for the price.
I think it's settled them
At least it also doesn't come bundled with some canoical tip garbage
I've got quite a few contacts who need a local solder tech
There's no one in my city they trust to do it atm
whats the point of a day off if I sleep until 2pm anyway? argh
No kids I assume
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
This is the sort of level of stuff I'd need to do
no, not really no
If that's a calendar year, time to take the rest of the year off π
Or, save it for when you want to hand your notice in π
I'm moving it over to next year
But I still have 73 days of paternity leave over the next two years also
That, if structured right, is good for about 6 months of continual holiday...
π
You could visit Tinkerer
We could have a hogshead or two
π€€
That's about 245 litres to drink... for those that don't do traditional measurements
I'll take fifteen fathoms of whisky please
I get too bored on vacation though, so I'll probably transfer 40 days next year too, like the previous 10 years
A day a week off for the next couple of years?
I'm doing that with the paternity leave, no Mondays for two years is what I'm thinking
You know whats annoying is that when your vacation renews on your anniversary rather than the new year
I dunno, for the business, that avoids the "year end holiday rush"
Ours are available on the 1st of January
yea but were in automotive and usually that time of year is slow anyway. But my anniversary is in May.. and right now i have 2 weeks.
but say if i got sick and had to take time off, i have to use those days. No extra sick days/personal days..
Ah, that's... broken
Here, there's holiday, and sick leave, and they're entirely separate
Yeah, we can take up to 18 days of sick leave just by notice per year
Anything over 3 days have to have a doctor's note though
But both are covered by the state
Here, over 3 days is supposed to have a doctors note, but there's not really a formal limit on the total leave. I mean, there is, but if I need 25 days over the year, I can have them
To clarify, 18 by notice, but only three at a time
The longer you take, the more attention you get
Can take 8 if it's an IA company @clear ferry
by notice π€
ahh. we just had our open-enrollment benefits meeting yesterday. good thing is that nothing changed from last year
@light trout right, never had use for that
Notice here is not coming in to work today boss π
Exactly @clever mortar
that's valid
I've used 5 sick days the last 12 years
I'm not sure how many I've taken, but not many
Last one was when I put my back out of alignment...
(getting old, it sucks π )
Aye I've had one of those too
Was stuck on the couch and sent my manager a SMS
I dont think ive had taken a sick day in the 6 yrs ive been at this job. although i did go home early one time.
Partial days don't count π
I work something between 2-20 hours per day, so I'm pretty free as long as I deliver my work
So Norway is a country run by slackers
@clever mortar it was because i may have been hungover..
Yeah, if I'm unwell enough to travel, but still able to work, I can WFH
You should check out Greece @hushed basalt
Never been unwell enough to work because of drink though π
Yeah but Greece doesn't have fossil fuel exports to subsidise all their sloth
that reminds me. it's come to my attention that people outside the US might say drink driving instead of drunk driving. is this true
if so... wtf
No
You can drink a lot in Germany and still drive atleast
@light trout good
i drink and i will sometimes drive. thankfully from the pub to home its a short one...\
Yes, drink driving here
I have issues with anybody stupid enough to drink and drive
i also do
Then again, the legal limit up here is effectively zero, thankfully
Same her
Had a half, shame...
Not even 1 beer
our limit basically allows you to have one beer
It isn't zero at sea here though
Not even a half pint here
0.08% is the legal limit
but you can still be charged with a DUI if you're below that and you do something incredibly stupid
i believe
yea nomrally i walk to my pub but i dont do it in this shit weather. but then again water is your friend.
π€· it's simple enough - if you're drinking, don't drive
Take a cab/bus/train
Anything else means you value your pleasure over other people's lives...
uber/lyft
lol
lol.
Boot == foot wear
@scenic radish is muuuuurica and @light trout is just a bafoon
@clever mortar knows I'm right
"windscreen" is really what gets me though
it's glass, not a screen
it would be a problem if it were a screen
It's a bug filtering screen π
*bug killing screen
I mean, technically, it screens (protects) you from the wind
i hit such a bad pothole once that it caused my already stiff suspension to bottom out and hit the bump stop. pretty sure the frame of the car also hit the pavement because it sounded like a damn gunshot
and i know what a gunshot sounds like, trust me
inb4 comments about the united states
My father hit a pothole so hard his rear undercarriage fell off once π
@clever mortar ehhhhh i suppose π
Yup, broke one of the coils last year, hitting a pothole
Broke an axel of a previous car (thankfully, not mine) hitting one at "some speed"
them duke boys are at it again!
lol. Michigan has notoriously bad roads. always a running joke in this state.
that green cauliflower
Michigan legalized recreational last year but only now is starting to be available to purchase. but a lot of communities are saying no to dispensaries.
i personally haven't ever used it but i have always found it strange that it was treated any differently than alcohol
about to become legal in illinois
i will say, i don't really care what other people do, but i live in a condo, so i just don't want to smell it in the common area
take that good good outside lol
I agree. i know about condo living. before ibought my house i ws in a condo and i a shared wall and the person next to me was a smoker that would smoke in her garage. and you could tell she was because it would come thorugh were my laundry was.
my ex and i nicknamed her "Smoking Lady" because we were watching x-files at the time
but im in my own house now. and no HOA (Home Owners Association),
yeah the goal is to eventually own a house, but i'm happy with the condo for now
all the trim was brown when i moved in (and not like a nice dark brown, it was builder-grade oak), so i painted all the trim, doors, and windows white
should make it more marketable when we go to sell
took a long time too. i probably put 75+ hours into it
i bet. yea white makes a big difference.
this...
...became this.
also i had carpet installed due to the bylaws and being above the first floor
that looks like it came out really good. As long you dont have carpets in the bathroom..
no, carpet is only needed in the living room, dining room, and bedrooms
that would be horrible lol
and thanks. yeah, the work was worth it
@scenic radish we did the same on our last house, it wasnβt fun at all. Never painting trim again.
i actually enjoy trim painting
Very time consuming
I donβt like painting period π
lol. @scenic radish your welcome. But i've seen carpet in bathrooms before and i just think thast asking for mold.
The mighty Mackinaw Bridge yesterday morning.. this bridge crosses the Straits of Mackinaw and links the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.
anyone streaming the state of the union today?
thanks
anyone else really hate stickers on things?
i mean, really despise them
like all the damn stickers on a laptop
and on my drinks at dunkin donuts
wtf man
@scenic radish I hate people that leave the sticker on their TV. I cringe when I see a tv with a 10cm sticker saying "4K!" 2 years after purcase
Stickers I put on are good. Stickers others put on are bad.
You would love all my Rick and Morty stickers and other stuff that crowds my laptop
When I lived in the philippines keeping the stickers was a status symbol.
interesting
so they keep the adv stickers on everything
my fiancee lived in the philippines at one point, i'll have to ask her about that
yeah im sure she heard about it. it cringed me out at least
@clear ferry i don't know if i have a high enough IQ to comprehend the stickers
why stickers @clear ferry why not clean and nice and shiny? hehe
Because that is for people that wear suits and talk bullshit all day
OCD alert
CDO*
screams internally

haha, yeah people their choise. I just find it extremely nice to just peel those off
My work laptop is slowly becoming more and more covered in stickers
My own one... none. None at all. That one stays clean
hehe well some like it so maybe its something to it
I notice the more hackerish stuff I buy like pinappe and hackrf the more stickers I get included in the package
proper hackers hah :p
im still waiting for hackers to delete all bank records :p n00bs until that happens

you are not a hacker in home automation until the garage door opens when you flush the toilet
sticker storage?
Omg you almost got a glimpse of my badge
With a picture where I still have hair

Such a tease
Enhance, zoom, enhance more
But sir we need to make a visual basic script to ping the IP before doing that
And the IP will be something like 956.267.123.612
Good thing you have seen my ugly mug already
And delete my IP from the internet please
Don't want to be hacked
zoom into the reflection
he is to young for that
Says the πΆ
You are too young for that @light trout
too young for pink floyd?
That's like saying folks are too young for Mozart...
That is right @clever mortar @dull chasm is too young for Mozart, he should stick to Vivaldi that he grew up with
I have several Floyd albums on vinyl
I had several on vinyl before @light trout was born
@unreal orbit btw if your muuuuurica streaming services have it, check out Shadow gallery - Floydian Memories
so i somehow converted my fiancee over from iOS to android
be prepared for a lot of questions
I hope you are talking about her phone π€

next month i'm going to disneyworld and the SW galaxy's edge park. i'm gonna do the custom build R2 unit. i was thinking i would open it up and turn it into a sensor platform. light, motion, temp, humid, camera, etc.
Congrats @junior forge
okay, scratch that, my R2 will be a sensor platform AND an almond voice assistant.
I did, on youtube. I'll listen to it a bit later
Nice
Nice
I am getting mobbed with scam calls today. WTF is going on
strange
I haven't had one... Ever
i used to get a ton, then i switched my number years ago
Bully for you
i hardly get any now
My wife has atleast three per month
I usually don't, but I've had one every 30 minutes since 4 hours ago
Blame ludeeus
i always laugh when i get a call from a number where the first six digits are the same AS MINE. like... there are only 10,000 of those numbers, and i doubt i know someone else who has one
@light trout π
@light trout π
All the numbers have come from Texas

i knew you were gonna do that @light trout lol
ever since we went at it the other day things have never been the same π’

π is an emoji of endearment
it means "peace among worlds"
Im getting tierd, was reading "emoji of endetarm"...
sounds about right
Mmmmmmmm
Endetarm

Interesting thing, on a 4K display, when you screencap something you get the double sized version, and when you post it back in it appears at twice the size π
ohhh lol
I have VGA somewhere still
oof
I guess it's time for me to sell my HAI Omni IIe panel and OnQ ALC light switches.... huh?
sure?
Hey grats, frenck con @scenic radish
Fongrats Crenck
Lol I snickered out loud

And they're like, it's loller than yours
Damn right it's loller than yours
I'd lol you, but I'd have to charge

don't threaten me with a good time

I missed the relevant part of the SotU and am probably not going to watch through again, why is everyone congratulating Frenck?
Did he get hired or something?
Oh nice! Congrats indeed then π
Does anyone have an NUC that they recommend for running hassio on?
I've been searching and haven't really seen any with specific model #s, but looking to run pihole, hassio, bitwarden, motioneye, and samba for some network drives
that's about it
Pretty much any of those ~$100 mini PCs that you can find on Amazon are good enough
@low harness oh lordy what have I done
@unreal orbit Currently running on an rpi3b, would any of those on amazon be worth the upgrade?
nice shirt!
Jelly, mine's supposed to come tomorrow
Yes. Anything running on desktop hardware will handle the load better. And moving from an SD card to a SATA drive will help a lot
Looks pretty gray, is that just the white balance?
Makes sense, I know it said navy
thanks @unreal orbit appreciate it!
@brisk furnace any pc from the last 15+ years works fine, unless you need special instructions like avx for tensorflow
Second hand small form factors like Dell Optiplex etc make great simple servers
If you don't mind 1-2 hdd bays
Or tiny stuff like Think center m93p
I prefer SFF vs USFF simply because they usually have inbuilt PSU
yup
I haaaateee external power bricks
Plus they can fit half height pcie
I run all my stuff on a mini itx setup now, retired my blade enclosure and servers π
I think even if you only need one ethernet port
There can be value in putting in an intel refurbed NIC
I'd never get an NUC again though
The one at work is loud, and I'm pretty sure it's thermally throttling
Plus not enough ports
Once you add up the PSU and dongles I doubt it takes up any less space than a SFF
I'm looking at getting something like a m93p for replacing my desktop, just need to find one with three monitor support that is dirt cheap or free π€·
swap out the gpu?
But I don't want a sff, I want a usff π
So it needs to come with three outputs
The m93p has a optional port that can be either hdmi or dp for 2x dp + VGA or dp+hdmi+vga
thunderbolt 3 and external GPU? Β―_(γ)_/Β―
Pff π
should do 3x dp and ship a vga active adapter in the box
I think 9020 has a vga as well
Just stick it under the desk as ballast
You'll never see it
Or use it as a foot stool π€·
That's the usff though
So that fits your requirements
Or get better monitors you pleb
Then run everything through a laptop
@unreal orbit dark blue? That looks gold to me.
Maybe first just throw out everything with Hardware > 5 years (probably everything? π ) and upgrade by building some common quad CPU server with at least 128 cores and a TB Ram
@unreal orbit do it https://gfycat.com/VioletLimpCondor
@ocean mirage bought it last time I was in the us because I got a good deal, I run it in detuned to c# and with thick strings
@boreal pewter pff I should nag my boss for a dl360 Gen10 though
@clear ferry is that like capacitive touch sensors
It's probably not as hard as it looks
Althogh I can't play dark souls normally
@clear ferry My brother has a schecter 7 string....seems okay
He loves the metal tho
It's a good neck imo
I was looking for a Ibanez S 7 string, but found no good deals, so I settled with this
Haven't had much time to play it the last year though
I had an ibanez once, 6 string, neck was a bit thin for me
I have a 88 key weighted midi keyboard my wife hasn't let me set up for 5 years
:cries:
I have a 61 key weighted midi keyboard, I'm going to connect it to my korg triton 76 now in a stack config
I have no idea how to use it
I bought it off someone for $200
Need to figure out a way to use it
What does she have against you setting it up?
ToO mUcH sPaCe
I've got an 88-weighted key digital piano I bought three years ago for $1500 that I haven't learned to play lol
Just no onboard sounds?
does it have a stand?
Maybe someone knows some good software
Or a good RPi solution
I've got a stand
It had a x stand I threw out cause I hate those things
yeah, easy to throw up and rip down though
if your wife doesn't want it set up permanently
But I bought a small ikea desk frame for it
ah okay cool
I'd like to learn piano, and I did start learning, but its so much easier to pick an instrument I can make good noises with to practice, rather than choose a piano which I suck at
Yeah I get you
I haven't progressed any more since the two lessons I took when I was like 14
I guess a lot of it is just deliberate practice
@hushed basalt I've used a iPad with garage band until now
With midi to the Triton I don't need that anymore
I've played guitar for 25 years, bass for 20 years, piano for 5 years and drums for three
Via focusrite itrack
@clear ferry Get a nice Yamaha GX-1
Holy shut, tips for my Weller are like $20 on ebay
I should just buy a new iron
@strange vapor waaant
@strange vapor I just benchmarked a Rook-Ceph Single-Node setup on a SSD VPS
@clear ferry lol $20
Tips for the iron I'm looking at are like $70+
The handle is like $250
Hi
@dull chasm "21 and holding" lol
yep
does that mean there should really be a 1 at the beginning of that? π
hey
π
not as old as tink
whew
I don't think I've hit the age I would want to stay at forever yet
i'd say at 27 forever
I'll wait another 6 months and let you know
i'll be waiting patiently
also i know this is home assistant related but i don't want to clog up the support channel... i made a furnace filter runtime sensor that only requires one day of history, except my dumb ass used the variable custom component instead of just using input_* integrations. just reworked it last night to use input_*. nothing more stressful than that
i made the thing months ago and never bothered changing it until last night
What was wrong with the custom component?
Nothing at all, it just felt weird using a custom component for it instead of a built-in integration
Forever age... hmmmmm. I'd like to keep my brain, and have the body of somebody half my age...
I'd say getting old sucks, but my mental age hasn't really changed much π
Yeah I'm 27 but still laugh at jokes a 12-year-old would find funny
But let's be honest, do dick jokes ever stop being funny?
If Monty Python is any indication, no
And to a lesser extent, Airplane 2
I should watch those movies again. It's been too long
Spaceballs, man. That was some good shit
And Men in Tights
from the http: page: "Donβt use option server_host on a Hass.io installation!"
well now i want to
that's like saying "don't push the big red button"
love it
so the foldable moto razr was announced yesterday
$1500
we really have reached a new low lol
Oh damn, I was interested until you just posted the price
main display is only 2142 x 876 though
If it was closer to $800 I might consider it. That is assuming the folding isn't ass
assuming the folding is
n'tass
100% chance of that being true
Hello everybody π
It didn't look bad from the video I watched on it, but only time will tell if it breaks after minimal use
yeah...
Got HASS.IO installed on my odroid XU4 the other night and getting it all setup.
So Ive joined the crew
welcome
Im a smart things convert
also, you installed home assistant π
Home Assistant is the software we all run. Hass.io is one of the ways you can install Home Assistant. You're still running Home Assistant.
I love the docker implementation to get Home assistant installed. It's so nice.
I'm not a huge fan of implementing docker in production, but that's probably because I'm not familiar enough with it
thankfully HassOS takes care of the containers
if you go the hassio installation route
otherwise if you go #449717345808547842 you're on your own
I prefer as little magic as possible. I make my own magic π§
So much else to do with home assistant, id rather just let others do that magic heh
i am kind of proud of my thermostat schedule and setpoints living in home assistant though. i can change the home/sleep/away setpoints with input_number sliders in my UI too
What kind of thermostat?
nice.. Do you have the setup posted anywhere. I use ecobee too
It's dangerous to go alone! Check out my GitHub.
niceee thanks sir
Ooo you get to use your shiny new command π
first time π

nubs like me get to ask and you get to show lol
lmao whatever @light trout
This repository exists mostly for my own amusement, but it may contain some things that others might find useful. :dancer:
@lilac egret let me know if you want help. just added my stuff to github so it's probably hard to navigate
I prefer to keep my HA config private. Mostly because I don't trust myself to not include secrets
That is fixable, don't have secrets
I installed the github integration and was thinking the same thing villhellm
@light trout what do you mean?
github integration only give you sensors
but muh passwords
i have special passwords
I secret pretty much everything. Including local ips (admittedly a paranoid step)
yeah probably don't need to do that lol
I still don't trust that I didn't miss something
i mean, i use secrets for certain things i don't need to, like the long strings for IR commands
but that's so i can easily refer to them without copying the entire string
like in scripts
@lilac egret i haven't set up the ability to edit my tstat schedule in the UI because it's simple, but here's how adjusting the setpoints looks
Half my setup is dependent on node-red, so the HA config by itself is pretty pointless
Ow, my eyes
ah gotcha. haven't used node red, built-in automations work well for me
lol i never really cared much for dark themes anymore after android lollipop
I do lots of things that aren't possible with yaml
or would require so many steps that it wouldn't be worth it
makes sense
or just a lot more complex. i'm sure @last plaza would argure its possible π
i'm too basic i guess π
Anything is possible if you want to waste hours
if you go nuts with jinja2 stuffs
@wet pilot you mean you don't like 10 levels of nested condition: and and condition: or?
jinja templates definitely would not solve the things I would need
no, you just handle it in more advanced programming via templates
jk
@unreal orbit fair, just giving noise. i moved to appdaemon instead
my automation wants are pretty simple i guess
It's not even just automations. Just logic for certain things I do
Like a dynamic reminder system
I have an input text and an input select that lets you type a reminder and the gps zone you want to be reminded in
Then a button that fires an event to "save" the reminder
everything gets stored in node-red vars. Dynamic complicated arrays are basically impossible with HA inputs
O I C
i wanted a way to re-use my logic in multiple automations
that's cool
for my fan speed automation and handling of double-tap events
@wet pilot Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V π
and then cry when you want to change a threshold for all of them
node-red has subflows, which lets you reuse whatever flow you want and you can set dynamic options for any data
In the newest update subflows are crazy powerful
that's pretty cool
i'm not a fan of JS or GUIs so i didn't care to look at nodered
tbh i'm looking forward to the scene.create and scene.apply services
Not liking JS is fine, but people get way too hung up on the UI thing. That's like 3% of what node-red is about
@scenic radish those are in 101
functionality that existed in node red that was basically impossible in yaml automations
wut
@unreal orbit its not that i'm against UIs, i just don't care about them
so it wasn't a draw. and if i'm going to be writing code anyway, i'd much rather use python
I come from a C# background so JS was a lot easier for me to learn than python. Still not a huge fan of python, but I get why people use it
i come from a BASIC background so everything is confusing
I dare you to write your automations in BASIC
that would be a fun month where nothing gets accomplished at the end
GOTO
syntax error
day 31... i've finally created an automation in BASIC that turns my lights on at sunset
now to convert my other 99 automations
Oh yaml automations also don't allow queuing for the same automation. I use that in a few places
wut u mean?
Like an automation is triggered and if it triggers again it will wait till the first run is finished before firing
oh gotcha
And, one of the most important features IMO, you can add nodes for various services without having to restart node-red. Telegram notifications, google api nodes, socketio, discord, local alexa, etc. all can be added without fear of breaking the rest of my currently running shit
alright, I'll stop now π
sheeeeet. I'm coming from Wink and IFTTT "automations". Node red is hella sick and flexible...
IFTTT, you poor soul. We are here to help
Automations Anonymous?
Hi. My name is Keith. It's been 15 days since my last IFTTT script broke...
Actually, there is ONE script that I still run, nightly to send a note to my damn HOA so I can park two cars in my driveway (don't get me started). I have to utter the stupid words to Alexa, nightly - "trigger notify HOA". Once I get presence closer to reliable, I'm gonna fire it off automatically.
As an alternative to HA built-in bluetooth tracking, the monitor script uses separate devices, usually Pi Zeroes, to track bluetooth devices.
It uses MQTT topics to relay device status messages to HA. See this forum thread for more.
If it's truly nightly why not make it scheduled?
Yeah, thanks. You gave me those links, yesterday. I just implemented my iBeacon, this morning.
@unreal orbit it's not really nightly... it's only if my daughter sleeps at home. We are (almost) empty nesters.
Wow, that script looks like someone put some thought into it. Excited to try it.
Hey guys, I was wondering if it'd be possible to run an m3u stream in HomeAssistant? Here's part of what I've got:
#EXTM3U
#EXT-X-VERSION:3
#EXT-X-TARGETDURATION:18
#EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE:171237
#EXTINF:10.0,
media_w447339749_171237.ts
#EXTINF:9.999,
media_w447339749_171238.ts
#EXTINF:10.0,
media_w447339749_171239.ts
There might be some further information about where the stream is and such but I'm not sure if home assistant supports m3u?

Found one of me when I restart HA for the 9th time after adding something and it still errors out because I forget a single indent somewhere
Yeah, I was battling "missing" entities today after a restart, and more restarts
Then I realised I'd commented stuff out while messing with it
I love when I'm including something back
And I forget to uncomment the domain
And everything just breaks
Then I also make the face above
MRW the tp-link integration decides one plug is not available after a restart, which means i need to restart again
@shy notch whats up with all the PRs that are failing?
yea I saw it but it doesnt explain anything
It explains that they know what the problem is
does github charge you to run the PRs in their system?
probably the build system
'tis just a flesh wound
So is there an HA app for Android? Been a while since I've messed with this
Nope, just the installable PWA
There is a native app in development. It will be released eventually probably
but no promises π
I got my new toy today. An ecovac deebot ozmo 960. It has a camera with object detection built in that surprisingly actually works.
It will be interesting to see if sucks works with it. I think they have the 900 working, so hopefully it works.
@unreal orbit installable pwa?
If you open your HA url in Chrome you can add it to your home screen. It installs it like a native app, but it's basically just a browser window
Speed. I am Speed.
https://neal.fun/speed/
@unreal orbit @fallow aurora an Android app was released yesterday but it's basically a web wrapper
Of course, now I need to find a link to it again
On google play? Or just a "release" on github?
pinned in #643115931203141633
@unreal orbit on Google play
Going to set myself up for soldering soon
I know I can sell these cables for about $120
For about $40 in parts
So the easier I can do it the more money I make $$$
There ya go
So the lady and I switched phone carriers and for whatever reason three lines is the same cost as two. So now I have a spare SIM card. Thoughts on possible uses besides a tablet?
Car modem
Dog gps collar
Laptop
Car modem is probably most useful
You could have a d1 mini or a rpi in there constantly pinging your gps to HA
Could you use it as a failover for your internet line
anyone know of a really flexible modular whole home audio / video solution ?
as in, multiple inputs, multiple unique outputs to multiple different zones, simultaneously
even the expensive things I look up are just stupid ridiculous, single audio input, multiple audio ouputs for thousands on thousands of dollars
I know that I could buy an hdmi -> ethernet transmitter and receiver for about $50 a piece, then you just add an additional transmitter per device you want to control, and another receiver for any place you want to receive some video, just grow it up at $50 a pop until you're done, super easy and convenient from infrastructure point of view, but not from flexibility
I'm now thinking, I want to have my laptop hooked up in the living room, I get up and go to the bathroom, imagine having a display in the mirror or something that you push a little button next to the light switch and it just starts outputting whatever is on that channel
(extreme example of course), what's not extreme however is I found a way to get all my media transmitters into my garage with my networking rack fine and dandy, then hopping them across ethernet to various rooms, yeah, no problemo. But interactivity then starts becoming a pain
I need every room to be both a receiver and transmitter... Say someone wants to play some Xbox, I'd be like "oh yeah, just go plug that into the garage, then run controllers out to the living room, if they'll reach (they won't) or use wireless ones (that will work like crap)
so, I'm thinking some kind of mesh system, where you can put an input or an output anywhere, and it'll tie into the existing system, any output can output any input, there's gotta be a way, my house already has so much ethernet running through it an earthquake couldn't rip it apart
I could technically stack these hdmi to ethernet receivers and transmitters on top of eachother, but they have little dipswitches on them to set their group, so you'd have to have each transmitter on another group, then flip the switches on the receiver to be on the correct channel basically
that's as close as I can come to it I think. Where each zone has a transmitting channel, then knowing what channel it is, you'd flip dips on the receiver to get your input from it (could digitize the dip flipping with lots of bibbly bobs to make it hands free)
they say, don't use these things on the same network as your data though for some reason (does it flood the network?)
isn't there some dumb board out there on ebay that has an hdmi and ethernet port on them to get the price lower? Maybe something that already has digital channel switching ?
maybe use something other than ethernet? Wireless sounds lame
mainly because of channel saturation and interference, "great, the tv is cutting out cause suzy is microwaving something"
hdmi cables themselves doesn't sound very good because I'd need to run two cables from every zone, to every zone for this to work, and I have 9 zones here, so that would be 81 cables in order to play anything in any room from any room
it would be awesome if there was like a little raspberry pi like device, that has an hdmi in, and would stream the video signal over gigabit ethernet, just simple as that. Then another little rpi like device that would take one of those streams and turn it back into hdmi output
like if someone made an rpi hat that did hdmi out, I know my little rockchip soc can handle 4k 60fps no problemo, but I don't have one that does hdmi in
yeah, uncompressed hdmi is a huge bandwidth hog, it'd be great to convert it to a nice compressed h624 or even something like vp9 and then send it over the network, then the receiving device could convert it back with a bit of loss, not too bad
and can add an hdmi input to a raspberry pi for over $80 or so using a card that plugs into the camera port on the pi... Except it's slow and 1080p, I'd like this to be able to handle 4k at some point
oh, and just tossing out there... No audio
there's an SBC https://www.gateworks.com/products/imx6-single-board-computer-gateworks-ventana-family/gw5510-single-board-computer/ that does 1080p and 30fps input and regular output with audio, that's kinda neat, must be more out there!
Holy wall of text, Batman!
For such a specific query, I'd probably recommend the /r/HomeTheater subreddit. They will have a much greater knowledge there.
sorry, I get really excited about these things
if Discord ever got around to making threads like good old Slack, I could have threaded all of that... I wonder why they are dragging their butts on doing that
I imagine because there's already enough good forum software out there and Discord is firmly placed in "chat" territory.
good point, unlike Slack
Slack is a collaboration client, discord is a chat client
believe me, I'm not the only one asking for it https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360031743291-Message-Threads
ok, converted that whole wall of text over to reddit, hopefully get some interesting feedback, in writing that and this, it really looks like nothing matters except an SBC with 4k hdmi input
I know you are not the only one, there has been many requests to discord to enable it, but with their target audience I don't think that will ever be a thing, but who knows π€·
i much prefer discord's formatting choices though
i find myself missing the markdown in slack
I'm not sure what you're gaining @low linden
Over a simple modern plex system
And just a console where you expect to use it
Or steam
H265 over IP encoders/decoders could do a bulk of what you want
But the cost is extreme
And HDMI matrixes are extremely priced as well
There's a reason all this stuff is really expensive.
Video is really hard.
Consumer stuff is only cheap because of scale and lack of QC
Plus lag on h26x encoding/decoding would be nuts.
Source, we use h265 encoders at work.
Plex and steam clients are cheap and proven
Does anyone know if you also can get notification from the new companion app for android?
"MAC's are awesome work Devices" - crashes when you prepare a 3 node cluster via VM
@lost brook you can. Tried it the other day.
Got my LEDs up. Using WLED and WS2811 12v strips.
@boreal pewter macs are junk
Can confirm, forced to use macs sometimes for production use
and yet people pay the apple premium.
Looks like were gonna need #android back π
@hushed basalt that's a pretty good idea, i'll look into that
@ocean mirage i thought about that too... was thinking of how to possibly implement it as cellular backup for home assistant
@clear mirage how did you set up notifications with the android app?? mine just says "requires ssl enabled for frontend" even though i do...
@scenic radish i well once i got the app set up, in my devices there's my phone "Alex's Samsung SMxxx" and n the call serivces theres a option for notify.[devicename] and in the service data you have to have message: then what you want to say.
in "my devices" what do you mean?
config - devices
@low linden I'm with badtelcotech. That is way overcomplicating things. I'm going to be building a large two story next year and plan on putting speakers in almost every room so I can stream music. No way would I spend the money on distributed video though. I believe in keep it simple stupid. It would be way easier and cheaper to just buy several xboxes than it would to try to route video all over the place.
What does it say the integration is @clear mirage ?
@clear mirage have you seen these things? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I2PsgyKZPg I want to hook this up next year
interesting, i'm not seeing anything
@unreal orbit it comes up as a mobile app
@low linden that's pretty cool!
I would love to do that some day.
My kids would love it too.
@hushed basalt the cost may not be that extreme if I can just find an SBC with HDMI in. Would cost about $1k to have the entire house media working
It says "mobile app" is the integration?
oh i don't have mobile_app: in my configuration.yaml, that might be why
adding that killed my telegram notifications for some reason...
i also don't have default_config:
@unreal orbit yup.
@mental garden you don't think it'd be awesome to be able to push an intercom button on a little touch screen light switch in any room in your house to talk to another room ?
what touch screen switch would you be using?
@unreal orbit @scenic radish
I've seen some DIY options, but I'm not giving my insurance company a reason to walk away from a claim.
@clear mirage good to know, thanks. looks like it is because i don't have mobile_app: in my config
@scenic radish your welcome. nice to know that im not the one asking for help this time
I'm going to try and hook up a raspberry pi zero WH to a 3.5" LCD behind a regular beauty plate that runs a lightweight web browser to a react app that does the mqtt commands to do things like turning lights on and off, with a series of little buttons for intercoms, what's silly is you could stream your front porch camera actually inside the light switch
wait no, 2.5"
got a few of them ordered to see which works the best, might have to modify the beauty plate to squeeze a bit more resolution out of it, haha
Yea, I looked into doing that too. I think a cat5 drop and a POE adapter could power it.
the 120 power is right there, so might as well just tap into that
(although don't trust the protection circuits at $2.05)
they work pretty well for hooking up relays to things like my bathroom with shower, I have a dht11 to kick the exhaust fan on when it gets humid in there. I've got 4 little MQ-4 methane detectors to see if I can detect when someone takes a big crap in there and stinks the place up, to kick the fan on too, but that's a really hard one to test
can't just make some methane whenever I feel like it
Haha, that's an interesting idea.
does anyone do service monitoring around here? I've got a whole ton of daemons and servers and such, and I was using the command line binary sensor, then converted it to a non-binary sensor with a ping result to see not just whether a service is up, but how quickly it responds, but it seems like HA eventually forgets about running these commands over time
maybe I'm wrong, I just went and checked on them, the little numbers are flipping about
