AMD Ryzen 5 3600 looks like it have an decent speed compared to the price...

orchid rose
#

depends on what you do. Intel is still probably the best choice for a pure gaming pc

hearty depot
#

have an I5-7600K in front of me Was until my AiO died decent enough

#

but finding an proper 1155 mainboard is getting hard

orchid rose
#

motherboards tend to die long before the cpus so the used market ends up unbalanced after a few years

hearty depot
#

AMD ll use the AR4 socket at least untill next year

#

would love this one after LinusTechtipps hold it up high

hearty depot
#

f. it.. bourght it.. but the Ryzen 7 3700x
after its sent by amazon directly

rapid musk
#

Is anyone aware of a device that will accept an HDMI signal with a network RJ45 port on it that will then forward the signal across my local intranet?

#

Kind of like the HDHomerun does with over the air TV signals...

clever mortar
#

You can get extenders that'll extend it over an RJ45 cable, but not over a network that I know of

rapid musk
#

Trying to just think out of the box for my wife. She wants to be able to monitor the security cameras from in the house, not from the Blue Iris server in the shop. I can always buy another Blue Iris license, but if theres a work around, that'd be sweet!

valid halo
#

Ah Blue Iris

#

I remember I tried that

#

it was neat

rapid musk
#

It's definitely legit, but there has to be a way to distribute that feed over my network lol

#

Which would also prevent excess data usage since its local

#

There is a web server, but that ties into the data usage factor

#

Remote desktop, meh

valid halo
#

Hmmmm

#

I'm assuming the server has no video out?

rapid musk
#

It does, its streaming to the monitor out in the shop. I've already played around and split the HDMI signal and sent it to the TV in the shop...but man, over the network would be legit, since the whole house is wired cat6 already

valid halo
#

Aaaaah.

rapid musk
#

I just need an HDHomerun with an HDMI in, instead of coax lol

#

Shows up on any of the networked smart TV's in the house.

#

I guess the extender makes most sense, just figured there’s a better mousetrap

#

NewTek Connect Spark

#

Only 5 bills ha

#

next

amber bramble
#

newtek/NDI stuff is crazy expensive

rapid musk
#

I just pulled the trigger on some cable matters extenders. Should work just fine.

hushed basalt
#

Is there a way to view the cameras over IP

#

Like I can view our cameras on the apps/rtsp

#

I can also add them into homeassistant

dull chasm
#

dont understand that is ip

valid halo
#

Uh

#

IU think what you need

#

is a device that grabs the RTSP feed

#

and has a video output that can plug into the TV

#

yes?

brisk glen
#

@rapid musk you are looking into HDBaseT

rapid musk
#

Never heard of it

brisk glen
#

HDBaseT, promoted and advanced by the HDBaseT Alliance, is a consumer electronic (CE) and commercial connectivity standard for transmission of uncompressed high-definition video (HD), audio, power, home networking, Ethernet, USB, and some control signals, over a common categ...

#

Unless you basically want to multicast a tv signal

#

But if you just want to monitor camera feeds, there are many other far better solutions

#

Such as having motioneye connect to the cameras

rapid musk
#

FML, where was that when I ran 8 50’ HDMI cables in my crawl space a few years back haha

#

That’s legit it provides power too. Dang, always something better out there

brisk glen
#

Usually I do a ip camera with POE

rapid musk
#

How does a modern TV with a built in transformer handle the power coming in the network interface?

brisk glen
#

The tv does not handle it, a box does

rapid musk
#

All my cams are PoE wired to a Ubiquiti switch

brisk glen
#

So then what is your end goal again?

rapid musk
#

Just to distribute the blue iris servers console footage to additional monitors in the house.

brisk glen
#

Far easier to use something like motioneye central server and listen on the stream via a web browser

rapid musk
#

But that was BEFORE you came in and dropped that bomb. Maybe I’ll get rid of all my HDMI cables and that awful 8 port splitter in my crawl space

#

Is the web browser local? Or remote?

#

As in data usage or no?

brisk glen
#

Local

dull chasm
#

so is blue iris web server

brisk glen
#

Run motioneye on a pc at home

#

Or that

#

There is no need to redesign everything

rapid musk
#

Supposedly these extenders I bought, the transmitter can be plugged into the switch and all the network drops are capable of receiving the stream with a receiver on the other end of the drop

#

The blue iris web server, from my understanding, is only accessible using my outside world IP with the configured port added, and the correct credentials. I don’t see how that wouldn’t use data, even if the console viewing is in the local intranet

#

I haven’t tried accessing it using the local up

dull chasm
#

localipofmachine:port

rapid musk
#

Up

#

IP*

#

Shit, I’m gonna feel stupid if that works

dull chasm
#

i know it will

#

i use it

brisk glen
#

Heh

rapid musk
#

Dammit! Haha

#

Thanks guy. Now to keep the extenders or return to amazon once they arrive

#

Hmm

dull chasm
#

return get something usefulll LOL

rapid musk
#

Now if I can just figure out where the timeout setting for UI3 are on the server

#

Maybe it won’t time out on local like it was on the outside IP

#

Although I do dig the idea of having any display in the house able to show the cams

brisk glen
#

Forget computers, I can view any camera from my phone

rapid musk
#

And I can as well, but having it on display would be handy. We both have the blue iris app installed on our phones. Notifications, clips, the whole 9 yards

#

And nope, even the local web server stream times out. Gotta find that setting in the server

#

To “save resources”. They’re my resources...locally

Hi all, I am looking for some assistance with regards to rtsp streams. 1. I cannot get the Lovelace picture entity to show my stream. I have added a generic camera in my configuration.yaml (URL I used can be viewed in VLC) and then configured the card as per the HA documentation but it just does not stream or show anything, empty card and loading when I click on it. Any ideas?

hearty depot
#

took your advice and changed to an AM4 system
Just was to much pain to find a propper 1155 mainboard

boreal pewter
#

I honestly don't care much about my Mainboard. I usually take an cheap ASRock 80 buck one, like a Pro3 for my old 1155 and now a Pro4 B for the current AM4 system. Since you don't OC Ryzen anyway it will work just as well as any 160 bucks mainboard

#

Just the RAM should be expensive 😄

hearty depot
#

IO was my cild of worry - so many mainboards with only usb2

boreal pewter
#

lol Mine has enough USB3 tho

hearty depot
#
boreal pewter
#

As said I have above for 80 bucks and it has everything needed

boreal pewter
#

Never forget what the Mainboard connects to, any storage, CPU, GPU. Everything it connects to can it possibly break... so no... 80 bucks for a common known mainboard shouldn't kill you

hearty depot
#

MSI isnt known well? I liked the 4 usb3.1 slots

boreal pewter
#

Sure, never said else, did I? It just sounded like you wanna save as much money as possible and therefor the Asrock is probably the cheapest usable one around

hearty depot
#

eehh - was the initial idea - Now I paid 350€ for the processor allone 🤣

boreal pewter
#

Even that is cheap considering the current 3xxx I would get are 500+

hearty depot
#

I was happy with my old I5 actually - I just hope I can play Cyberpunk with the Ryzen 7 3700x 🤞

boreal pewter
#

Depends on your RAM, RAM OC, Cooling in regards to the AMD PBO settings and the used Engine of the game

orchid rose
#

it's funny how that changes at times. When I got my cpu 8 years ago, it was the common practice to get the cheapest ram you could find as it made so little performance difference. Few years later, things had changed and even for a gaming PC it was worth having fairly fast RAM

#

not sure how it is now with the newer ones

boreal pewter
#

Well if it was now about to get an i7 you can just get any cheap <100 buck 2600Mhz Ram

#

But Ryzen is very specific here

#

Even I saved money on this case only took common 3200Mhz CL16 RAm, not too bad but not good either

hearty depot
#

For now I just try to slap in the two sicks I got laying here

#

🤞 🤞 🤞

boreal pewter
#

It maybe works but you won't be happy, just saying before you cry it's so slow 😛

orchid rose
#

used market is pretty good with memory so if you have issues, it might be worth swapping those

hearty depot
#

Its possible that theyre good ones..?

boreal pewter
#

When they were used with an intel, barely. Barely people on an intel went on buying high Mhz RAM. And I'm not even sure if you build that yourself, it rather sounds like it is a ready-to-go one and then.. well definitely not lol

hearty depot
#

MTA8ATF1G64AZ-2G3H1
lol were all german guys?

orchid rose
#

around 3000MHz seems to be enough for Ryzen 7

#

no, but ich verstehe ein bisschen and that's what I found with my first google search

hearty depot
#

fufufufu 2400 MHz

boreal pewter
#

Yep really terrible common Intel Ram

#

I think when I was buying mine exactly a year ago, Samsung B-Die RAM with 3200Mhz+ and at least CL16 was 240€?

#

So I just didn't take Samsung B-Dies and paid 130 or 140 :/

hearty depot
#

Comeooon 🙈

boreal pewter
#

And as said, for the CPU OC itself to get a higher per core Ghz for Games which don't at least support 8 cores you want to get the best cooling you can get

Does your ISP allow access using IPV6? I know a lot of ISPs use CGNAT for IPV4, and I believe because of that - sometimes don't allow IPV6.

clear ferry

In Norway we have never used CGNAT

Until later years with LTE

My ISP recently changed to CGNAT but let me opt out, thank god

So I have one motion sensor in my hall, and a button we click when we go to bed. Meaning the motion sensor is setting an input_bool to be true if motion is detected. So im having all kinds of problem with that. Vacuum cleaner is triggering it, some times when I get home there is a lag in the sensor causing my lights not to turn on etc. Does anyone have a smarter way to do it?

@boreal pewter I regularly have to debug really nasty issues caused by "docker on docker" deployments, especially in CI/CD situations. renamed '/home.bak' -> '/home/home.bak'``` I'm trying to overwrite /home with the contents of /home.bak, but *it* won't let me. What am I doing wrong?
#

would sudo mv -v /home.bak/. /home work? Aha! Yes. but now... mv: cannot move '/home.bak/.' to '/home/.': Device or resource busy oh right, i need to do this as a user with no home in /home

#

but that didn't work either 🤷

low harness
#

overwriting all of /home at once sounds like a bad idea...

bronze rock
#

so, I backed up /home, into /home.old, mounted a new SSD as /home and copied /home.old into it. The SSD died last night (or is dying, I think https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/j5vVxcsBS8/) so I copied all of /home (as the SSD) to /home.bak so I could merge what i needed from both the old backup (.old) and the new backup (.bak) and now I've unmounted the SSD so /home is basically empty.

#

i don't need to move the entirety, but i do need everything in /home.bak/pi back

boreal pewter
#

Well you either remove /home upfront and move /home.bak to /home or you keep /home and move everything from INSIDE home.bak to home

#

Either way should work just fine being root

bronze rock
#

I'm failing at the syntax of mv for some reason, the latter feels safer to me so what would an example of that be? mv -v /home.bak/* /home?

#

or do i just move all the dirs inside one by one?

boreal pewter
#

Either
rm -rf /home && mv /home.bak /home
Or mv /home.bak/* /home/

bronze rock
#

The trailing slash was seemingly what I was forgetting. I like how powerful this cli is vs ms, but, it helps a lot if you wield that power correctly 😉

boreal pewter
#

Yup... I assumed so

bronze rock
#

all the .* files in /home.bak/pi didn't move to /home/pi and when I attempted to copy them that didn't work either. How do you move those? lol I suck at this.

#

its dawning on me now that I should have put all the docker containers' files not in /home 😂

#
mv: cannot stat '.bashrc': No such file or directory``` Huh?
boreal pewter
#

Just try to work as root first

bronze rock
#

su to another non pi user allowed me to move those files

#

i don't have an actual root login

#

at least, not over SSH

clear ferry
#

if I already have running docker instances, and I didn't start them with compose, can I change that to compose or will I have to recreate them with compose ? 🤔

boreal pewter
#

You don't need to LOGIN as root to become root.. but that should be linux basic

#

@clear ferry it doesn't matter if they were started with compose or not if you use proper naming and networking in the config itself. But you won't be able to docker-compose down unless it was used docker-compose up -d

bronze rock
#

doesn't sudo run the command as root?

boreal pewter
#

@bronze rock that is not so easy... actually yes but also no. There is also a huge difference between sudo -i and su - and su and so on

clear ferry
#

@boreal pewter I might have misunderstood, but I thought only stuff created through docker-compose can automatically restart on power on of host atleast, or is that possible with stuff I have created with docker run ? I should probably move to compose anyway...

boreal pewter
#

If you do such kind of work just be "real root"

clear ferry
#

@bronze rock Linux for dummies is a good start, 9th edition out now 😏

bronze rock
#

ah, well, i just su root and supplied the correct password, but it wasn't allowed, which I think is a desired outcome over SSH

boreal pewter
#

@clear ferry oh no omg. You can always append the flag --restart=always in a run as well as restart: always to compose

#

@bronze rock while for root you don't need su root but just su, there again is a difference between su and su -

bronze rock
#

I don't think I can become root, at all, over SSH

clear ferry
boreal pewter
#

You can if you did it right...

bronze rock
#

perhaps I'm being unclear, i intentionally set this up so I COULDN'T.

#

root may only be used at the actual pi itself

boreal pewter
clear ferry
#

you mean you did permitrootlogin no in sshd_config @bronze rock ?

boreal pewter
#

Maybe an anti-root script? If root logs in, erase all data

bronze rock
#

I just checked sshd_config to be sure, but the whole thing is commented out

boreal pewter
#

LOL

#

Not really right

#

@clear ferry take over from here 😄

clear ferry
#

that will only be for ssh access, once you are in with a user and run su that doesn't matter

bronze rock
#

If you guys wanna be funny, we can be done, but if you want to actually be helpful, instead of derisive, that'd be nice

#

"For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related, like whether Docker or Kubernetes, or Celcius or Kelvin, or Celcius or Celsius, or anything. NO POLITICS or RELIGION and BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently."

boreal pewter
#

First off commenting things out in sshd config doesn't deactivate them, it just makes them use the default.

And now the 3rd time, LOGGING IN AS ROOT AND BECOME ROOT ARE 2 THINGS

clear ferry
#

logging in as root ssh root@192.168.1.1 makes you master of the house upon login, becoming root ssh user@192.168.1.1 then su su - sudo su or any other means just makes you enter the house as a resident, then becoming the master of the house

bronze rock
#

I have no idea what the password is (I would have only set it to 1 thing, and that's not working). That doesn't make any sense though, because as other users when I use sudo, it forces me to use the password, and that does work. Any reason that would happen?

boreal pewter
#

First batch of my crowdfunded vacuum cleaner is getting shipped

clear ferry
#

@bronze rock is your user in the sudoers group ? if so do sudo su and enter your user password, then change the root password by issuing passwd

Domoticz? I'm afraid you got the wrong number...

Until now i hesitated between Domoticz and Home Assistant, but i'm going to install Home Assistant which seems much more complete and updated

Ok... I looked it up. Had never heard of "domotic" as a synonym for Home Automation before.. I think you're making the right choice. Moved over from domoticz myself about a year ago.

I already have a Raspberry pi 3b+, there is a NAS (samba) installed actualy, but i'm going to get a Pi 4 and move the NAS on it, for best speed (ethernet 1 gbps and USB 3.0)

So my 3b+ will be free to install my home assistant

@tawny pebble Concerning the NAS, i just want to access to my network drive when i'm outside of my personal network (from any PC with Windows, without configure anything else, just typing the IP on the file explorer ;)), and the router provided by my ISP have a NAS feature but i can't open it on the web. So after 3 years, i found the Raspberry solution and it works fine (I had an ADSL connexion so the upload speed was so much slow that it was not usefull to by a "true" samba NAS... but next week i will have the fiber in my new appartment so i'm looking for move it on a more powerfull device...)

also, the smartthings hardware is seriously nice and not terribly expensive. $20 water leak sensors that connect directly to the pi with the zigbee stick, no smartthings hub required

Which for me, is usually the Apple TV.

Since... I can detect what the Apple TV is actually doing... I can set it up to have a condition not to do so. Not so much with some of the other devices there, yet, though. Possibly could do that with the BluRay Player, since it's network connected, and only shows up when it's powered up.
