I wonder if a Sonos Play:5 and a Google Home Mini would be cheaper, and sound better 😛

Bought the wife the symfonisk

#

But she complains it skips a lot on Spotify

clever mortar

Those do tick the right price point

clear ferry

So she took my home mini

Works flawlessly she said

clever mortar
#

Weird

clear ferry
#

So I'll have to test the symfonisk in my office for a while

I wish there was some ambilight solution that let me use my Roku as a player, without costing a fortune

Oh no not an ambilight topic

If you want a reliable one it costs several hundred bucks

Note really worth it imo

Have we considered HA merch, I'm looking around for a new license plate holder, and I wouldn't mind if it was a commercial for HA 😂

Or stickers

#

@late gate I run squid transparent proxy if that helps 😛

Somebody did stickers a while back, but I think it was a limited run

That is nice quantity discounts

Depends on how good and cheap it is

Pff, give me Bloodborne 2

Bloodborne 2 would be nice. Then I could have 2 games for my PS4

Lol, if you only knew how much I play Dark Souls. Just not on PS4

I need to get around to Sekiro.... next year maybe

I used to speedrun DS1 for a little bit a few years ago. Sekiro is meh

clear ferry

Bloodborne is probably my favorite game of all time, the lore is 🤤

It's for sure one of From's best games. I still love the original Dark Souls

DS1 and BB are pretty close in my heart

clear ferry

I actually enjoyed DS2 a lot

#

I am in the minority though

unreal orbit

DS2 is pretty garbage, but DS2 speedruns are the most entertaining

I still enjoy playing it, but it is the worst of the 3 souls games

I found the lore more clear, the graphics crisper and the weapons more to my liking really

but I'm a weirdo it seems 🤷

unreal orbit

When you speedrun it you can see how inconsistent and bad the mechanics are compared to the first game

It wasn't made by the same people as 1 and 3

It was being developed by From's B team at the same time BB was in development

scenic radish

@hearty depot no data lost yet, I have upgraded 8 of 12 nodes in the 2.2PB solution 🤣

but it is so full that I can only do a single node at a time

very off topic: anyone excited for wow classic here !

scenic radish

probably wouldn't matter as long as the hardware is outdoor rated

I guess Dell just didn't like paying the license fee for hdmi or something

boreal pewter

Maybe the owner just didnt like upgrading?

orchid rose
#

Is there a reason to upgrade really? I can't go 4k without upgrading my whole gaming setup so that's not an option and larger than 24" 1080p or 1200p doesn't make much sense

clear ferry
#

Just experienced a real world DMZ at a customer

boreal pewter
#

I took 27" WQHD 165hz. That is easy to afford for 500 bucks

#

4k 165hz is just too expensive

orchid rose

and the 2000 bucks to get a PC to run games on it

boreal pewter
#

Yeah i paid about that

#

What's the matter

scenic radish
#

@orchid rose does it have dvi at least? you can get an hdmi to dvi cable

orchid rose
#

My point was just that for my use it makes very little sense to upgrade my monitor as it would be easily a 1000-1500 upgrade for very little gain

#

Tediore, yeah I know. Has DP as well but those cables were pretty costly last I checked, at least locally

boreal pewter
#

Well 1080p is common and any good Display today offers hdmi and DP

#

Since dvi is dying

orchid rose
#

my display is better than 1080p and yet offers no hdmi. For some reason Dell just decided to not include it. Probably cutting costs for an entry level monitor at the time (300€)

Helping people is the best way to learn too.

scenic radish

that's true. i think what helped me with automations in particular was just jumping in and figuring out how to manually create automations in YAML. now i have an absolutely stupid number of automations lol

anyway, don't mean to flex. really just proof that literally anyone can learn how to do this stuff without prior experience if i can

strange vapor
#

@scenic radish Pro tip! Put them in git with decent comments.

#

There's a very good rule with code in general: If you look at code you wrote a month ago and aren't immediately repulsed by some part of it, you probably just learnt nothing in the meanwhile! Some decent version control with decent commit messages is basically a must when you're trying to figure out what you were smoking for old code 😄

hushed basalt
#

Source control is key

#

Github has free unlimited private repositories now which I take advantage of

#

I also set up cicd so when I make changes to my code it automatically deploys/changes what I need

#

Although homeassistant is slowly but surely moving away from infrastructure as code to more front end configuration. It's in a weird place in the middle at the moment. So IaC doesn't work so well anymore

scenic radish
#

Appreciate the tip! I was thinking of adding my entire setup to github...I added a small project of mine to it. Probably gonna upload my setup now.

hushed basalt
#

I have a 'homeassistant' repo where I put my homeassistant configs, docker compose files and anything else relating to this 'service'

#

Then I have a drone ci file in there too which does all the automated deployments

#

I think it's super important to make sure your /config folder is automatically and securely backed up as well

#

Since so much in homeassistant now is outside the configuration.yaml

Hi. New to hass. Is there a way to connect my cfx95 fridge (wifi equipped and app) to hass?

midnight adder
#

hello guys

orchid rose
#

if it's not there, try googling if people have tried to integrate it and search if it has any API you can use to interact with it

midnight adder
#

i have a question i cant seem to search an answer for

#

its to do with a raspberry pi and i keep bringing up links to pi installs

orchid rose
#

just ask the question 🙂

midnight adder
#

fitted the led strips inside some nice IKEA lamps - works great - I control it via a webpage

#

the next step is i have a relay board and another pi that will switch " normal" lights on and off

#

would i be able to run home assistant on another " server" in a docker - server alredy has containers running on it

#

and get it to control the relay lights on one pi and the leds on another pi?

#

i use two pi because the led strips require PWM GPIO pins

#

and the relay boards normal GPIO pins

orchid rose
#

If you have a way of controlling them, it should be possible for HA to control them. You can run scripts that make web requests afaik, if that's how you control the lights

midnight adder
#

xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();

xhttp.open("GET", "?Colour=" + ClickedColour, false);
xhttp.send();

#

is a snippet of the webpage code

orchid rose
#

but in any case it should be possible afaik and running HA in #449717345808547842 is also very common

midnight adder
#

ok so how about this

#

each pi has a docker container running home assistant - is there then a way to link them to a " main " install of home assistant on the server?

#

because I see plugins here for the GPIO pins direct

fading elm
#

could use mqtt for that afaik

orchid rose
#

you can probably sync them with mqtt or something but I'm not sure if there's an easy way

midnight adder
#

hmmm i will look into mqtt and how it works

#

u see right now the system works but its not elegant 😉

#

and involves a different ip and webpage for each pi

#

so one page to change led colours etc and one for the relay swiched lights

#

i have never used home assistant before but it looks like something that could tie things together

orchid rose
#

it should do, but it might take a little bit of tinkering as your setup is not very standard 🙂

midnight adder
#

lol nothing i get into is used in a standard way 😉

#

thats why i am asking now before i plunge headlong into home assistant

#

cos it looks VAST!

fading elm
#

@midnight adder mqtt is pubsub, so things can publish data, and they can subscribe to topics to get published data as soon as it's published... so you'd have the main controller publish commands, and the various slave devices subscribe and react to the commands they need to... nothing HA specific at all about that, except HA has a mqtt broker (the pubsub server) addon built-in, and integration support

midnight adder

i'd also be interested in that

#

paulus pls

lavish smelt
#

I'm about to be in the market for a bunch of new shit (moving to a new house) and it'd just be interesting to see what's popular. I know they do usage statistics with the include_used_components key of the updater component. The data is there. They just don't share it with us (that I'm aware of).

scenic radish
#

agreed. i just like stats like that in general

#

damn near half of my frontend is just stats about my HVAC system lol

lavish smelt
#

HVAC is going to be one of my concerns. I've had a Nest for years, but Google's shenanigans have turned me off from it.

scenic radish
#

i like my ecobee

lavish smelt
#

I was looking at Ecobee, actually, but no local control, apparently. I thought it was all local control.

scenic radish
#

i like it more now that homekit controller works with it so i have local control of it

#

you can use the homekit controller component in hass for local control

#

it does limit some things though. you can't use the comfort settings or anything, but you can control temp, mode, etc

#

tbh it's good enough for me

lavish smelt
#

That's really all you need. It's the constant cloud polling that bugs me. I'm currently in a home with Google Fiber, so idgaf about bandwidth, but I'm about to lose that. I don't want to rely on my ISP for anything.

#

I'll look into the Homekit control.

scenic radish
#

it's automatically enabled as long you have discovery enabled

lavish smelt
#

Yeah, I've never actually used that. That's cool.

scenic radish
#

it's crazy, i have no idea how they figured that one out

#

you don't even need any apple devices to use it, which is good because i have none

lavish smelt
#

It's sort of the opposite of the homekit integration. Rather than hass publishing devices to homekit, homekit is publishing to hass.

scenic radish
#

right. i just wonder how they tapped into the homekit protocol to do that

lavish smelt
#

No telling. My only concern would be it breaking whenever Apple decides to change the protocol somehow.

#

Sort of like what happened with airplay and airplay2.

scenic radish
#

true, but i'd imagine any devices that you already have would still work

#

just devices with the new protocol would be an issue

lavish smelt
#

Yeah, it'd just be newer devices that wouldn't

scenic radish
#

yeah

lavish smelt
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

scenic radish
#

once abode releases homekit, all my smart home devices will be locally controlled with hass

#

and abode is at the center of most of my hass automations

so that'll be dope

Hacking into a remote system requires one (or both) of two things:

  1. Security vulnerability
  2. Configuration error (usually around authentication)

For what it's worth, in the nearly 3 years I've been running HA, exposed remotely, I've had no issues

#

i got busy setting up a media server at home...have over 10TB of tv shows /movies already lol...at&t is probably not happy with my usage lol

#

i haven't updated HA in a while..still running 0.93.2. should probably update soon

last plaza
#

I almost had heart attack last night when we had power failure and my ESXI wouldn’t start back up due to one of the drive failure.

#

The updates have been very smooth lately. No issues for me - at least on the major functionality that I rely on day to day.

#

If other things break, I am happy to remove that code and keep it simple.

strange vapor
#

I've had some fun with Unifi recently which required messing with json, other than that, upgrades tend to be painless.

#

Probably just after jinxing myself now 😄

scenic radish
#

good lord, 10TB??

strange vapor
#

That all?

scenic radish
#

we live in a society

#

also it's ok, i'm still on 0.95.4 because 0.96 made the generic climate component much slower to update in the frontend for me

strange vapor
#

In my previous job, if certain customers wanted an after hours quick job done, I'd just point them at my Amazon Wish List. So I ended up with a stupid sized DVD/CD collection. Ripped them all at decent quality, and it comes to a bit more than 10TB 😄

scenic radish
odd mason
#

@scenic radish i've got 100TB zfs raid setup

scenic radish
#

you guys are animals

#

jk that's pretty cool

odd mason
#

lol

scenic radish
#

i don't think i use more than 100 GB of bandwidth each month at home lol

strange vapor
#

One of my colleagues accidentally wiped his fairly large NAS recently, EMC I think. As he pointed out after, RAID != Backup

scenic radish
#

oof

odd mason
#

@strange vapor yup..i have 2 10TB hard drives for backup but i haven't set it up yet

late gate
#

got 4x 10TB in my synology with daily backup of essensial files, good enough for me as it can survive two disk crashes

scenic radish
#

i have 20 x 100 TB

#

all connected to my rPi

late gate
#

bit overkill? :p

odd mason
#

also looking for a cloud backup service that's affordable. heard gsuite business doesn't enforce data limit so i might try that. encrypt then backup whenever

strange vapor
#

@odd mason If you find one let me know!

late gate
#

im just using the cloud storage from synology just cause its simple and affordable

odd mason
#

@strange vapor need a cloud backup? yea what do u recommend?

scenic radish
#

google one offers 2 TB for $100 USD/year

strange vapor
#

Have stuff I care about backed up as well as possible, but some of the DVD rips aren't backed up. Still have the original media so not too worried, but decent cloud backup that doesn't require a mortgage would be nice.

scenic radish
#

not sure if that's what you need though

odd mason
#

@scenic radish nah that's too much for that

#

my data isn't worth that much. i can just redownload stuff if i need to

clear ferry
#

@odd mason I raise you the 2.2PB video storage I updated earlier this week

odd mason
#

damn!

#

that's incredible

scenic radish
#

200 GB for $30/yr

strange vapor
#

@clear ferry Overkill much? 😄

clear ferry
#

@strange vapor scality grows indefinitely

scenic radish
#

wtf are you guys doing that you have that much data lmao

clear ferry
#

Just add nodes

odd mason
#

@scenic radish lots of old tv shows lol. i'm a sucker for old shows i used to watch as a kid

strange vapor
#

How many KW of power do you pull?

scenic radish
#

@odd mason ah makes sense lol

odd mason
#

i don't even worry about the power...what is it costing me? another 20-30 bucks a month? eh

scenic radish
#

yeah really do you guys have 500 amp service or something

late gate
#

any of you have tried those chinese i7 nuc clones?

strange vapor
#

@scenic radish It's a lot easier to run large systems here with 240V power.

scenic radish
#

dedicated load center for the personal space station

odd mason
scenic radish
#

@strange vapor yeah that makes sense, the only 240V service i have is for my air conditioner, everything else runs on 120

odd mason
#

and got 10 10TB HDD when they came on sale for 145/each

strange vapor
#

A funny thing I never realised till recently is that the kettles we take for granted in Ireland and UK aren't actually all that common on the continent as they really don't work as well on 110-120V

odd mason
#

i do need to buy a backup power source

#

something to shut down gracefully when we have power issues

scenic radish
#

yeah that sounds like a nightmare to manage

#

that's pretty cool about your r720

odd mason
#

/r/homelab got me hooked lol

#

if anyone is paying for plex pass i highly recommend checking out Jellyfin. been using it for a bit now with 7+ users and it's been working great

strange vapor
#

hmm, that 16 bay das looks interesting....

odd mason
#

was cheap and works great as long as you don't care about hotswap

#

and i didn't

strange vapor
#

Have a couple of Odroid HC1 a while ago, basically small ARM boards in a chassis with space for a SATA 3.5" drive. Was using them to learn Ceph the hard way.

#

Actually really nice little machines, was surprised at how well four of them worked together.

#

Currently have them running a Minio cluster doing fake S3 for me 🙂

odd mason
#

nice

strange vapor
#

Wouldn't rely on them for "production" but a nice cheap way of messing with distributed file systems.

last plaza
#

@odd mason why do you need 10TB? just upload it online, and let the world back it up for you 😛

#

I am also running out of space on my NAS, I need more drives now...

odd mason
#

where?

strange vapor
#

Does that FUSE file system which turns gmail into "unlimited" storage still exist?

odd mason
#

no idea never used it before

strange vapor
#

heh, not seeing anything about gmailfs past 2006, I guess they cut off the loophole being used 😄

boreal pewter
#

I work on a unlimited storage method to download Torrents to and serve via plex

#

Yet I fail hard

odd mason
#

@boreal pewter why do you fail?

#

I've got a pretty good system setup now where all downloads are processed to be MP4 format with AC3/AAC audio so it eliminates practically all transcoding needs.

hearty depot
#

Uuh - how you did that? I want that too

odd mason
velvet horizonBOT
#

Underknowledge is away for 27m 59s with a message :point_right: zzzzZzZzZ..

odd mason
#

it even handles subtitles for you if you want them

hushed basalt
#

I don't transcode either

#

Nor converting

#

Strict client enforcement is where it's at

odd mason
#

@hushed basalt what do u mean by client enforcement?

#

i don't have to do anything like that or maybe it's something i haven't thought of

rapid musk
#

Who is the resident server guru round these parts? I need advice lol

ocean mirage
#

always best to ask first and see what answers you get

hushed basalt
#

@odd mason as in players

#

So I only use media players that can play hevc etc,

odd mason
#

ah ok

hushed basalt
#

I use apple tvs with infuse and that works really well

odd mason
#

i do everything in x264 because no browsers even support hevc right now

hushed basalt
#

Cheaper than the hardware and electricity costs of converting

#

I don't do any in browser viewing though

rapid musk
#

Well I’m looking for advice on my first server. Gonna scoop one from eBay as I’m tired of using my main PC for EVERYTHING

hushed basalt
#

My upload bandwidth is limited too so hevc really helps

odd mason
#

i figure i shouldn't have to worry about what my users watch stuff on

rapid musk
#

Problem is I don’t know squat about enterprise hardware

odd mason
#

ah ok..i'm on a gigabit connection

ocean mirage
#

Whats your use case rocky

odd mason
#

@rapid musk i didn't either. still don't know too much but /r/homelab set me up. dell r720 you can get cheap. i got one with 192GB RAM and 1.2TB HDD that came with mine for like 600 bucks i think

rapid musk
#

Probably an Unraid server. I have tons of content I use through Emby and I’d like to familiarize myself with an actual server setup. Maybe screw around with virtualization

ocean mirage
#

depends on if you need transcodes and what you might be doing with that virtuilization

rapid musk
#

Currently my main PC is in a Rosewill 4U 12 HDD case with consumer grade hardware. I7-7700k 32gb ram

#

But I recently had some power outages and it killed my OS on my SSD so I had to implement a UPS, which my old rack didn’t have room for...down the rabbit hole I go

ocean mirage
#

hehe

rapid musk
#

Bigger rack, UPS, new OS now a big ass 25u rack with 2/3 empty lol

odd mason
#

@rapid musk if your budget is 600-1k you can get a nice server setup with everything you'll need most likely

rapid musk
#

Was looking at the r720 and the dl380 but I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision. Steered in the right direction

odd mason
#

most of the money will go into storage

rapid musk
#

I can always build on the storage, I just want a solid foundation to start building a storage pool on, with the benefit of RAID

ocean mirage
#

I thought you said Unraid

rapid musk
#

Phone autocorrected, sorry. Unraid

odd mason
#

why unraid?

#

proxmox + zfs works great

rapid musk
#

I tried freenas and couldn’t get the hang of it. Not sure what my hang up was. It was a couple years ago. Figured I’d give Unraid a go

ocean mirage
#

I like Unraid, I have been using it for a few months and its very easy to use

rapid musk
#

I think it was giving me too much crap about my drives

ocean mirage
#

I am not really familiar with what competing products offer though

rapid musk
#

Well ZFS is faster iirc

ocean mirage
#

Oh yeah Unraid is not for performance

#

but for media which is what you sound like you want it for its good

#

easily expandable, which i find handy

rapid musk
#

Exactly. I’m just a tinkerer that’s never satisfied, so I need a new project, and a server is on the radar

#

Plus, I have to fill some space in this rack, right? Haha

ocean mirage
#

hah exactly

#

I've worked off guides by this guy before, this one could serve you well if you dont need a heap of computing power https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/nas-killer-4-0-build-guide-fast-quiet-power-efficient-and-flexible-starting-at-125/667

#

He tends to favor white box builds

rapid musk
#

Nice

#

Guess I need to educate myself on Xeon CPUs

ocean mirage
#

Buy first ask questions later ;)

#

thats what I did

rapid musk
#

Lol, alright. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the r720 or the dl380...

ocean mirage
#

I'm not super familiar with using either but I know they can be a bit limited on internal storage and can be a bit noisy, but if that works for you then sweet

rapid musk
#

Yeah, noise is kind of a concern, but it’s not like I sleep next to the rack. It lives in the garage

ocean mirage
#

Fair enough

rapid musk
#

Which just so happens to be behind my head when I sleep through a wall lol

#

But hell, that’s where my wall hung boiler hangs as well so...

ocean mirage
#

I'd imagine that wall is thicker than paper lol

#

should be right

odd mason
#

jellyfin on an LXC container works great from my experience

#

i'm loving proxmox over the past 8 months or so that i've used it

rapid musk
#

I’m pretty freakin pleased with Emby

ocean mirage
#

I use plex 🦆

odd mason
#

eh...i like free stuff lol

rapid musk
#

I tried plex, it was awesome

#

Short story...

ocean mirage
#

lol

#

Plex is free for most things, I do pay however

odd mason
#

i heard that you need an internet connection to authenticate?

rapid musk
#

I ditched Plex because my streams timed out and I hated how when I cut the cord, it wouldn’t still be on and playing when I turned the TV back on the next day

ocean mirage
#

I'm not sure chags, maybe

#

not entirely a concern of mine

rapid musk
#

Meaning after a certain period it would just stop using bandwidth. Bugged the hell outta me

ocean mirage
#

I'm not sure I really follow rocky

odd mason
#

i've made it a habit of only buying/installing things that don't need an internet connection to work. although my internet is pretty solid i want it to work regardless of what's going on outside

rapid musk
#

Switched to Emby because it would play indefinitely...well I hit my data cap 2 months in a row and now I’ve turned on the “are you still watching” feature on Emby lol

odd mason
#

jellyfin is emby..only free and open source

ocean mirage
#

Some of my premium stuff might not work without an internet connection but I believe everything else would, which is fine for me

odd mason
#

same core code base but they've split off to keep it FOSS

rapid musk
#

How does that help a guy that bought Emby premiere last Black Friday for $99 though? I may give it a whirl

ocean mirage
#

I imagine jellyfin will be much more appealing in a year or two, once its had more time

odd mason
#

is it a one time payment or a yearly subscription?

ocean mirage
#

as it is plex is really polished and has a lot of supported clients

#

that said I haven't personally tried jellyfin

odd mason
#

yea they're working on clients. android clients just went live a few weeks ago

#

but i use it in the browser on my iphone and it works great

#

and i use it via kodi on my main tv

rapid musk
#

One time, for life

odd mason
#

ah ok then you're set @rapid musk

ocean mirage
#

My main client is an Apple TV, I assume they're not there yet

rapid musk
#

And it works locally regardless of an outside connection

odd mason
#

yea not there yet @ocean mirage

ocean mirage
#

I hope they do well

odd mason
#

@rapid musk how does it authenticate to show you're a subscriber if u don't need an internet connection?

rapid musk
#

I assume that’s stored locally since once you type in your premiere key, it just always stays active as a premiere license

odd mason
#

interesting

rapid musk
#

Without an outside connection I can still watch my OTA channels via my HDHomeRun and my DVR and my stored movies...obviously the IPTV stuff goes offline without a connection though

#

All through Emby

odd mason
#

nice

rapid musk
#

Have a few scripts that run EPG123 with schedules direct to always keep 14 days of guide data, and use xTeVe for the IPTV tuner setup. Works amazing

odd mason
#

i haven't set up IPTV yet

#

netflix + all my media seems to be enough for my family

rapid musk
#

Mine too, I’ve noticed. We have it and rarely watch it. I watch some UFC stuff, and some HBO and Showtime stuff, but that’s it really. I bought a year pass back in Feb for $120. Not sure I’ll renew

#

Oh yeah, sports too, I do watch sports...damn. I’m stuck lol

odd mason
#

yea paying a bit for some usenet stuff seems to be better for me

#

i can download a 40GB movie and have it processed and indexed in jellyfin in less than 10min usually

rapid musk
#

Nice

odd mason
#

my bro in law asked for Judge Judy the other day

#

i obliged but i still judge him for it

rapid musk
#

HA!

odd mason
rapid musk
#

Yeah my parents live in The middle of nowhere and are tied to satellite but they are growing to love accessing my Emby server since they have no OTA channels, plus I get everything

odd mason
#

yea parents is the one thing i'm surprised with. mine are in their 60s and pull up stuff on their phone and cast to their TV regularly

#

only had to show them once

rapid musk
#

Yep, I bought my mom a nvidia shield and set it up and she hasn’t really looked back. Loaded Emby and Netflix and she’s always on my server lol

odd mason
#

nice

rapid musk
#

She’s spoiled with my symmetrical gigabit connection
