Those do tick the right price point
Weird
So I'll have to test the symfonisk in my office for a while
whats the best ambilight as of now? had dreamscreen, but they just packed their stuff and left shop over night
I wish there was some ambilight solution that let me use my Roku as a player, without costing a fortune
Oh no not an ambilight topic
If you want a reliable one it costs several hundred bucks
Note really worth it imo
do any of you run a transparent firewall?
Hello
Does anyone know why BRUNT BLIND ENGINE is not getting loaded on Hassio latest version_
@midnight adder #330990055533576204
Is there a addon for domain name for hassio? I have a namecheap domain name i want to use
#330990055533576204 @dusty gorge
Have we considered HA merch, I'm looking around for a new license plate holder, and I wouldn't mind if it was a commercial for HA 😂
Or stickers
@late gate I run squid transparent proxy if that helps 😛
Somebody did stickers a while back, but I think it was a limited run
I should have had a sticker that said I know I'm a dumbass, but my house is smart thanks to Home Assistant or My house is smarter than me and the HA logo
Well I'm off to stop and service a 2.2pb system, will try to not corrupt anything 😛
make a backup first 🤣
(asking me how long that would take)
@clear ferry will just go with a pfsense setup at the edge of the network without nat - should do its job
I think there's a bunch of official-ish t-shirt designs.
need more merch! 😄
who's ready for borderlands 3 to be released
Depends on how good and cheap it is
Pff, give me Bloodborne 2
Bloodborne 2 would be nice. Then I could have 2 games for my PS4
So you haven't played Dark Souls yet ?
Lol, if you only knew how much I play Dark Souls. Just not on PS4
I used to speedrun DS1 for a little bit a few years ago. Sekiro is meh
Bloodborne is probably my favorite game of all time, the lore is 🤤
It's for sure one of From's best games. I still love the original Dark Souls
DS1 and BB are pretty close in my heart
Try finger, but hole
Large chest ahead
DS2 is pretty garbage, but DS2 speedruns are the most entertaining
I still enjoy playing it, but it is the worst of the 3 souls games
Or 4 souls games, technically
I found the lore more clear, the graphics crisper and the weapons more to my liking really
but I'm a weirdo it seems 🤷
When you speedrun it you can see how inconsistent and bad the mechanics are compared to the first game
It wasn't made by the same people as 1 and 3
(and Bloodborne and Sekiro)
It was being developed by From's B team at the same time BB was in development
never played dark souls or bloodborne
borderlands is my favorite series of all time
I have Horizon - Zero Dawn waiting for me too
and I need to get around to RE2:Remake
zzzzz
So my grandma gave me a outdoor bar yesterday.. definitely going to be putting some LEDs in this sucker
wait now, I just did a edit of the docs, because I thought the integrations had changed to components, but was it really the other way around 🤣
@hearty depot no data lost yet, I have upgraded 8 of 12 nodes in the 2.2PB solution 🤣
but it is so full that I can only do a single node at a time
LED all the things
One thing I'm planning on doing is making it so the table top lights up. Thinking about weather i should do each panel with a separate controller or the whole top with one
very off topic: anyone excited for wow classic here !
probably wouldn't matter as long as the hardware is outdoor rated
would likely be cheaper to use a single controller if it's powerful enough for the total length of LED strips you'll need
hmm
Why are you spamming channels with "hmm"?
trying to get client to stay at present, instead of rolling back to 1:57 saturday
sorry tinkerer
You can right-click/hold the channel name and select "mark as read"
I only have that problem on the android app
Sometimes even after you scroll to the bottom it resets the position and doesn't think you've read anything
that's what was happening.. web client.
Oh yeah that too. The web client is also finicky
Hi, I did install home.assio to my raspberry Pi in my old apartment, but it has been disconnected and unplugged for a while now, and I have moved to a new apartment...Im trying to just plug the raspberry to power and ethernet, but I cannot enter the hassio.local:8123 adress, also it seems that Im not getting any IP adress in the router for the device, can it be broken? Or am I missing something maybe? It was a while I where trying this
Wrong channel @south pecan
Please take a moment to read the channel topic (message) before posting 😉
In your case, I'd start with #330990055533576204
Wuhu, I haven't broken any systems so far
So, plenty of time yet then?
Last node upgrading now 😛
When you have a 2.2pb system you can only do one node at a time with 93% full
What's wrong with risking all the data on the roll of a dice
That was my meaning too, nobody listened, they talked about buzzwords like uptime sla lost profit customer accessibility whatever those things are 🤷
got my NUC now, but my monitor doesn't have HDMI 😢
Lol, how is life in 2004 @orchid rose ?
it's only 7-8 years old the monitor I think 😦
I guess Dell just didn't like paying the license fee for hdmi or something
Maybe the owner just didnt like upgrading?
Is there a reason to upgrade really? I can't go 4k without upgrading my whole gaming setup so that's not an option and larger than 24" 1080p or 1200p doesn't make much sense
Just experienced a real world DMZ at a customer
I took 27" WQHD 165hz. That is easy to afford for 500 bucks
4k 165hz is just too expensive
and the 2000 bucks to get a PC to run games on it
@orchid rose does it have dvi at least? you can get an hdmi to dvi cable
My point was just that for my use it makes very little sense to upgrade my monitor as it would be easily a 1000-1500 upgrade for very little gain
Tediore, yeah I know. Has DP as well but those cables were pretty costly last I checked, at least locally
Well 1080p is common and any good Display today offers hdmi and DP
Since dvi is dying
my display is better than 1080p and yet offers no hdmi. For some reason Dell just decided to not include it. Probably cutting costs for an entry level monitor at the time (300€)
🤷
~$9 shipped if you're in the US: https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=301&cp_id=30101&cs_id=3010101&p_id=2404&seq=1&format=2
*** !!! WARNING !!! *** Note that this cable is NOT an ordinary HDMI® cable. This is specifically for connecting a device with an HDMI connector to another device equip
not in the US unfortunately. Finland.
ah understood, sry
also needs to be a mini-hdmi to dvi which makes it even worse 🙂
ugh yeah that doesn't help lol
mini dp to dp costs 3$ in ali and 25€ in a local computer store...
guess I'll get my trusty old 720p projector and plug it into that one tomorrow 😄
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
wife has asked for ring video doorbell...
how hard to set up an android tablet with Hass?
To run it, or to look at it?
to be a display/control surface
web client, or is there an official android client?
The current "official" android (and other OS like Windows and OSX) are to use PWA.
PWA?
Progressive Web App?
Basically, point your browser at the system, save to desktop 😉
gotcha. so web interface for now.
There are many unofficial web apps though, but ... why 🤷
All this is of course technically off topic in this channel 😛
(I was waiting on @light trout to complain 😛 )
I'm past that stage
I got a picture-elements card to work.
I am climbing that speet learning curve.
steep
The learning curve for picture elements becomes basically flat when you look at the example on https://demo.home-assistant.io
Just start changing values and watch how it changes the card
Thankfully if you get stuck, we've got a whole channel dedicated to #frontend-archived 😛
But yeah, the whole thing about HA is that you can do a bit of trial and error and see what happens
As long as you don't mess up a polling value for a service, it's unlikely to be a disaster
anyone know of any decent free resources for learning python? i've made a lot of progress with HASS since I started back in February (I've gotten as far as being able to use templates without outside help) but i'm hoping to actually take it a step farther now
or other suggestions really
The book is great, I own a copy
awesome, thank you
cool, looks awesome.
i've been having a blast with HASS. i knew nothing about YAML or JSON before starting, and i'm at the point where i can actually help people with some things
huge learning curve for sure
Helping people is the best way to learn too.
that's true. i think what helped me with automations in particular was just jumping in and figuring out how to manually create automations in YAML. now i have an absolutely stupid number of automations lol
anyway, don't mean to flex. really just proof that literally anyone can learn how to do this stuff without prior experience if i can
@scenic radish Pro tip! Put them in git with decent comments.
There's a very good rule with code in general: If you look at code you wrote a month ago and aren't immediately repulsed by some part of it, you probably just learnt nothing in the meanwhile! Some decent version control with decent commit messages is basically a must when you're trying to figure out what you were smoking for old code 😄
Source control is key
Github has free unlimited private repositories now which I take advantage of
I also set up cicd so when I make changes to my code it automatically deploys/changes what I need
Although homeassistant is slowly but surely moving away from infrastructure as code to more front end configuration. It's in a weird place in the middle at the moment. So IaC doesn't work so well anymore
Appreciate the tip! I was thinking of adding my entire setup to github...I added a small project of mine to it. Probably gonna upload my setup now.
I have a 'homeassistant' repo where I put my homeassistant configs, docker compose files and anything else relating to this 'service'
Then I have a drone ci file in there too which does all the automated deployments
I think it's super important to make sure your /config folder is automatically and securely backed up as well
Since so much in homeassistant now is outside the configuration.yaml
Dam, the AirPods 2 are magical
I feel like I am in the future with the always on microphone
🤢
Hi. New to hass. Is there a way to connect my cfx95 fridge (wifi equipped and app) to hass?
hello guys
Molly, as always, check the components list: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/
if it's not there, try googling if people have tried to integrate it and search if it has any API you can use to interact with it
i have a question i cant seem to search an answer for
its to do with a raspberry pi and i keep bringing up links to pi installs
just ask the question 🙂
ok i have built this https://www.instructables.com/id/Wifi-Controlled-12v-Led-Strip-With-Raspberry-Pi/
fitted the led strips inside some nice IKEA lamps - works great - I control it via a webpage
the next step is i have a relay board and another pi that will switch " normal" lights on and off
would i be able to run home assistant on another " server" in a docker - server alredy has containers running on it
and get it to control the relay lights on one pi and the leds on another pi?
i use two pi because the led strips require PWM GPIO pins
and the relay boards normal GPIO pins
If you have a way of controlling them, it should be possible for HA to control them. You can run scripts that make web requests afaik, if that's how you control the lights
xhttp = new XMLHttpRequest();
xhttp.open("GET", "?Colour=" + ClickedColour, false);
xhttp.send();
is a snippet of the webpage code
I've never used anything like that but this might do the trick? https://www.home-assistant.io/components/rest_command/
but in any case it should be possible afaik and running HA in #449717345808547842 is also very common
ok so how about this
each pi has a docker container running home assistant - is there then a way to link them to a " main " install of home assistant on the server?
because I see plugins here for the GPIO pins direct
could use mqtt for that afaik
you can probably sync them with mqtt or something but I'm not sure if there's an easy way
hmmm i will look into mqtt and how it works
u see right now the system works but its not elegant 😉
and involves a different ip and webpage for each pi
so one page to change led colours etc and one for the relay swiched lights
i have never used home assistant before but it looks like something that could tie things together
it should do, but it might take a little bit of tinkering as your setup is not very standard 🙂
lol nothing i get into is used in a standard way 😉
thats why i am asking now before i plunge headlong into home assistant
cos it looks VAST!
@midnight adder mqtt is pubsub, so things can publish data, and they can subscribe to topics to get published data as soon as it's published... so you'd have the main controller publish commands, and the various slave devices subscribe and react to the commands they need to... nothing HA specific at all about that, except HA has a mqtt broker (the pubsub server) addon built-in, and integration support
ok great thanks for the help i will go off and read up on this
Oof, imagine being a diplomat and being assigned a 1997 Saab 9-5 as a diplomatic car
That is actually the worst I've ever seen
I’d take it
So i've been fighting with HA since yesterday afternoon, and I'm at a loss as to whats wrong. I did restart before i left work yesterday , around 430 or so, i got home around 515, and it was still restarting, so i unplugged my Rpi and plugged it back in and that did nothing, so I've tried 3 attempts at burning a new sd card with the latest Hassio and everytime try to restore from a snapshot it just hangs and doesnt want to re-connect
@clear mirage #330990055533576204 then
@clear ferry posted there, man is it annoying when HA decides to do this... it was working great. thankfully i live alone so im not annoying any other family members with HA being down
Long live proper installs, #551864459891703809 people rise up
😛 ❤
after this i think i might upgrade to using a Nuc
@hushed basalt yeah, i have automatic snapshots made each night and uploaded to my google drive for that reason
Is there any way for us regular users to see any of the analytics stats? It would be cool to know stuff like what platforms and components are the most popular.
I'm about to be in the market for a bunch of new shit (moving to a new house) and it'd just be interesting to see what's popular. I know they do usage statistics with the include_used_components key of the updater component. The data is there. They just don't share it with us (that I'm aware of).
agreed. i just like stats like that in general
damn near half of my frontend is just stats about my HVAC system lol
HVAC is going to be one of my concerns. I've had a Nest for years, but Google's shenanigans have turned me off from it.
i like my ecobee
I was looking at Ecobee, actually, but no local control, apparently. I thought it was all local control.
i like it more now that homekit controller works with it so i have local control of it
you can use the homekit controller component in hass for local control
it does limit some things though. you can't use the comfort settings or anything, but you can control temp, mode, etc
tbh it's good enough for me
That's really all you need. It's the constant cloud polling that bugs me. I'm currently in a home with Google Fiber, so idgaf about bandwidth, but I'm about to lose that. I don't want to rely on my ISP for anything.
I'll look into the Homekit control.
Yeah, I've never actually used that. That's cool.
it's crazy, i have no idea how they figured that one out
you don't even need any apple devices to use it, which is good because i have none
It's sort of the opposite of the homekit integration. Rather than hass publishing devices to homekit, homekit is publishing to hass.
right. i just wonder how they tapped into the homekit protocol to do that
No telling. My only concern would be it breaking whenever Apple decides to change the protocol somehow.
Sort of like what happened with airplay and airplay2.
true, but i'd imagine any devices that you already have would still work
just devices with the new protocol would be an issue
Yeah, it'd just be newer devices that wouldn't
yeah
¯_(ツ)_/¯
once abode releases homekit, all my smart home devices will be locally controlled with hass
and abode is at the center of most of my hass automations
so that'll be dope

Now there's an ecosystem I haven't seen yet.
I need something other than Ring for the next house as well.
Im using a bog standard doorbell that can be detected using rtl_433
bog?
Ah, sorry. Haven't seen the term before.
I'd like to do something similar. Dumb doorbell that i can monitor, but it's the video call piece that I'm still missing.
nice queues on wow classic. just like old times
I could easily just do an IP camera and an intercom, but getting the "phone call" for when someone was at my door was a nice touch of the Ring ecosystem. It's just a shame that it was so delayed that by the time it rang, they had already walked away.
@late gate I saw that. Nice to see the player base acting like adults again.
@lavish smelt I have not had the time to try logging in before now. just going to level something soloish
@late gate warlock was always easy af in vanilla.
I wonder how long it will be untill wow classic will be a mess

@pure vine maybe, just enjoy it while it last
Activision is steering that ship at the end of the day. It'll be a mess in less than a year, I'm sure.
not more than a mess than star wars galaxies was, nothing can beat that
Exactly. Take it for what it is. An officially supported vanilla experience. Soak in the nostalgia while you can.
Im glad bungie has managed to get out the sinking ship that is activision-blizard
FFXIV was pretty bad before they relaunched it.
the first release?
Yeah.
i like my abode system. reliable, free to use the app and self-monitor
of course, the equipment can be expensive which is a direct result of abode not requiring a paid subscription
It's just that it's a cloud push atm
I've been using the envisalink for years with a generic honeywell system. It works great, it's just a pain in the ass to get those systems initially configured
oh nice
New house has one of those, and I'll probably just do that again.
I'll still augment it. I've used the Aeotec z-wave sensors in conjunction with the honeywell system before. You just have to write the automations in hass for when the alarm is armed, set it off if those see motion, etc...
ah yeah that makes sense
@clear ferry I still have a ret paladin :p
@clear ferry I played a priest for years before I quit WoW.
Started in beta, played active until wotlk, casual until cataclysm
you guys fans of borderlands at all
@clear ferry i dropped off some time during BC. Played for a could of weeks when wrath came out. Didn't pick it back up until Legion and played for a few weeks again. Haven't touched it since. That game needs to be treated like a narcotic, lol.
No 😛 @scenic radish
@scenic radish Yes, but not 2K.
I went from swg to wow back to swg to wow then swtor, rift, ffxiv then a bit back to wow
Classic wow was the best though, it went downhill from BC and out 🤷
then good time to play @clear ferry
I don't even have time to finish any projects right now, so no,it is not a good time to play 😛
Maybe in 2020, or 2021
hehe, im just taking some time. life cant be that busy
mostly the reason why I play solo
Lol, I hear that. Between moving across the country and trying to work on a PhD, I don't have time for anything.
I'm glad to be moving out of my old house. That place was a never-ending source of projects.
gotta love homeownership
shortly after i moved in i discovered that my dryer duct was disconnected behind the wall...
Im lucklily done with the renovation on this house. never again, neeeeever
That's why I bought a house that's 20 years newer this time.
discharging hot moist air and lint into the ceiling cavity above my bedroom closet
With being the only guy who works with 13 products in the whole country, my calendar is booked 5-6 weeks in advance and I take 100% care of a baby 3-5 days a week 😛
@scenic radish ouch. I'm hoping I don't find anything crazy like that. We just had our home inspection over the weekend.
@late gate My last house was a renovation, and I've also realized I will never do that again. I don't regret it. Learned a ton. Don't want to have to do it again. Got a house with an unfinished basement so that I can still have my reno project without rendering the entire house inoperable.
well rest assured a home inspection wouldn't have found it because it was all behind drywall
lol
yeah I learned a lot too, just not sure if its worth it calculating the material cost plus self labour
@late gate I think I may have broken even, but the toll it took on me is probably not worth it.
when that said I got this house extremely cheap and its been valued 4m over what I bought it for
4 million
probably not usd, lol
not that rich, sorry no sugar daddy :p
i am disappoint
point it its worth much more now hehe
Yeah, I bought this house for 2.1mill NOK, done 100k NOK in renovation, based on my neighbors houses that have been sold recently I can probably sell it for 4-5mill NOK depending on the market
I'd take a $220K USD profit
I only have 1.4 mill NOK left in loans too 🤷
2MM KRO = 220K USD
yeah same thing here, next to Norwegian Outlet, @clear ferry if you know where that is. bought it for a million, and got 5,5 eval 8 years later
I've done well and was able to make about a 90% profit. Around 100k USD. That was my downpayment for the new house.
Yeah, but it definitely took it's toll on me.
$85K USD purchase price. should be able to sell for 105K+
My parents bought their house for 4.1mill nok in 2004, they got it appraised last year for 8.5 mill, hardly done anything really😛
The house is even from 1967
Well, you're also in Norway. That part of the world is getting more popular as everything around the equator bursts into flames.
We enjoy the snow
I hate the snow
Although, I miss the snow of 1997, we had 4.2 meters around our house
wut
inside winter and inside summer is love
that's insane lmao
I'm moving from the southeastern US closer to the west coast and I'm looking forward to snow again.
chicago here so i know a thing about snow
but i don't know about 4.2 meters of snow
@scenic radish https://images.app.goo.gl/DQf43QLCjgRLjv9M9
that's...
Yeah, that's some Canada shit for us, lol.
advanced snow
I have family from the New England area, and that looks about right.
that's beautiful
So pretty far north 😛
no kidding
my house https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IgNubrLidcIXjyT8LM_gqOMcrhn4ak2n not fancy, but its smart at least :p
As far north as Baffin bay it seems
is english your second language
I'm about to be so far inland that it'll be like a 16 hour trip just to get to the ocean, but idgaf. I did my undergrad at a school near a beach and I kinda got bored with it.
serious question, i really have no idea
Aye, we speak Norwegian as a first language yes 😛
ah that makes sense
Yeah, most other countries have their shit together and teach multiple languages at a younger age.
i'm impressed with your english
i know some ilonggo, but that's about it
@lavish smelt yep... we really need to get on that
We start with English in first grade, but I watched foreign satellite TV since I was... Born, and I had a commodore 64 since I was 2 years old 😂
I'm having to learn Spanish in my 30s and it's... difficult.
to say the least lol
I speak Norwegian, some German, some Spanish, some french, English, and I'm currently studying Japanese, and of course I fully speak and understand Swedish and Danish 😛
Oh, and I understand most of Dutch
i like those waffle cookies with caramel in the middle, does that count
We usually learn German French or Spanish from 7th grade
@scenic radish stroopwaffles?
yeah lol
🤤
I just eat them raw like a savage
I used to buy 10 packs when I would travel back and forth from France to do trainings
trainings?
Always fly via Schiphol, best airport in Europe, and stroopwaffles
Yeah, our main training center for Europe is outside Lyon, so I've been there 20+ times
armed forces training?
No, technology, 😂
oh lmao
Hewlett-Packard Isle d'Abeau Lyon
armed forces technology training?
😂
i've gotcha, that's cool
Can you really call yourself a sys admin if you haven't been in battle before?
I denied the armed forces for 6 years, they eventually gave up
Does norway have mandatory service? (or supposed to be mandatory?)
No, but all over the age of 18 are called in for check and if they want they can join
Both boys and girls
i would not fare well
I don't necessarily disagree with mandatory public service, but mandatory military service is pretty bs
I was supposed to be in the intelligence services, but meh, I was busy 😛
yeah i think good diplomacy is more important
@clear ferry don't let them see your hass setup, they might force you to join
In the US we have the freedom to choose whether we join the military. Unless they decide to draft people, then freedom becomes secondary 👍
I'm already cleared for the highest levels of security, they probably know about my Xiaomi buttons already!
Indeed
Nothing fancy 😛
same, but i do have a lot of automations
i had to break out parts of my config and my automations into several files in their own directories, it was getting too cumbersome to manage
just a warning, you've got your latitude and longitude visible in your config

i'm too scared to make my instance remotely accessible
I have mixed feelings about it. I didn't figure out how to get my HA cloud url setup in the iOS app. I also didn't try too hard. I left my connection open with an haproxy vm running in front of it and fail2ban.
i did the duckdns/let's encrypt setup, played with it for 5 minutes and disabled it lol
All of the certificates/dns/networking etc was easy enough (IT background), but I wanted to get the hass cloud side working. My instance has been down for about 90 days now though, so there's not much I can do at the moment.
Oh yeah it was easy, I just mean I'm afraid of someone hacking their way into my HASS instance
I have so many exposed services anyway, have been hosting stuff from home since 1998 😛
Hacking into a remote system requires one (or both) of two things:
- Security vulnerability
- Configuration error (usually around authentication)
For what it's worth, in the nearly 3 years I've been running HA, exposed remotely, I've had no issues
All the reports of people's systems being hacked have come from them doing silly things - like admin/admin for the auth, or no auth at all
PEBKAC
ID10T
GIT GUD
and any of a dozen more terms for pilot error.
I do like controlled flight into terrain and stuffed cloud
Almost as funny as flaming datum
grin
May not be as smexy as atxbyea's setup but it is now running hassio in docker 😮
Did you install docker in Debian under Linux?
Ubuntu, why? First time I'm using Linux for pretty much anything
Just remember not to get up too quickly after giving blood 😉
I have so much iron in my blood that it is beneficial for me to be a donor
I would rust on the inside if I didn't
I used to have an iron level of close to 400, after I started donating I'm down under 100
Damn, no magnet emoji
Good job! I used to be a donor, but then I moved and here it's really inconvenient.
How inconvenient? Mostly all Norwegian cities have donor centers
There's one here too, but it's at the hospital, and it's only open, like, on Thursdays between 14 and 16.
So I have to get out of work and go by car for half an hour.
Oh, ours even at the hospital's are open until 21-22 some days, and 19 other days
@clever mortar that's good to hear. https and decent password with 2fa and you think i'm good?
@orchid rose "hassio in docker" TRIGGERED
I should install hassio in a docker container under hyper-v under esxi just to trigger people
Windows is already in there 😛
yup, i read too fast lol
@clever mortar also considering ip ban after 2 bad attempts lol
And, for a little added challenge for the idiots, don't use port 8123 or 443
i thought i'd have to forward 443 to 8123
You can forward any port you want
HTTP/HTTPS allows you to specify the port, so you've got some 65K (and change) to play with
brb, forwarding port 42069
ELITE
Port 42 for life, or the end of the universe
My initials are EZ and Norwegian license plates are AB12345 so I always wanted EZ31337 for extra lulz
We can pay to get our own plates actually
10000nok for a plate that lasts 10 years, follows you and not the car
yeah i've wanted Tediore as a plate, but i don't really want to pay extra money per year to get it
we pay annually in my state and it's extra for custom plates
States, the weirdest thing about the US, how a country really isn't the same country 😛
best part is some things are legal on a state level and illegal at a federal level
The laws are so different per state you could call the EU a country in the same respect as the US 😂
@clever mortar also good to know, thank you. not sure why i thought i'd have to use a specific one
Nah, many protocols support being provided with a port number
ah just checked the duckdns docs, I C
Duckdns
i don't enjoy that i have to forward ports to my xbox to have an open NAT
Xbox supports upnp doesn't it?
i'm sort of just hoping that there aren't vulnerabilities in the xbox
it does, but i have upnp disabled on my router for security
So rather have them open all the time instead of when needed, and fixed instead of random, sounds a lot safer 😛
eh true, but at least it's limited to the Xbox and not all devices on the network like with upnp
but that's an interesting point, I'll have to ask what the IT people at my work think
Isn't upnp rather unsafe? At least that's what I've been told so I disabled it 🤔
Ask the it people here 😛
It can be because any devices can use it even if they're rogue devices
That's what I've always understood at least
It basically assumes all clients are trustworthy even if they might not be
Meh, UPnP can be abused, but so can default passwords on routers

Yup

Fair enough 👍
Please don't contribute to the problem
Gotcha, thanks
would you guys make fun of me if I told you I have a google wifi router
Not to your face
Thankfully though, we can't see your face 😛
☹️
Hey, if it works for you... it works
I don't see any issues with those mesh systems as access points, but as routers...
I just like the configuration app lol
Been thinking of getting other equipment to actually run a vlan for all my smart home devices
mhmm.. installing zsh on my cromebook wasnt the brightest idea 😅
Houses here are ridiculous
@hushed basalt what do you mean
i mean why 🤣
back to /bin/bash and i got back my missing charakters 🎉
ouch
That'd get a family home in the city centre here, or a flat in London 😛
that's like california level in the US
Our "cheap" houses arnt built like how the US would build a cheap house, most are still made using bricks, also due to country side protection laws known as the greenbelt, the price of land in city's has sky rocketed
Also the closer you are to London the more ££££ you can demand because those are in high demand as we have stupidly centralised around it
London prices are beyond insane
Even im afraid to make holidays there because it would cost like a month of living in germany for a week. Not that I really want to experience strange currency and driving on the damn wrong side
Eh, London't only horribly expensive during tourist season (so, January to December) or if you want to stay in a fancy hotel that's really central
If you don't mind staying in something that's "only" decent, then you can get it down to merely gently painful
Isnt a cup of Coffee everywhere near London still 5 bucks strange currency?
Only if you want fancy stuff, and not simply coffee
In Portugal it was less than 1€ 🤔
Yeah, but you don't have the overheads of people who think 20 hour working days are too short 😛
Where do you live again? Just to check if we stay at yours ❤
Way further North
😱
London is a thing I'm not crazy enough to live near enough to make visiting it a day trip
"5 bucks strange currency" lol
Pounds isn't weird, is a decimalised currency like the euro
(warning politics) although there seems to be people who don't want it to be decimalised
It's no weirder than the USD with it's damn quarters!
Weak pound at the moment is great for online shopping. Pity there's a good chance come November that shopping from the UK may be fairly awkward here!
Fairly expensive
Can someone help me understand service calls for template cover?
https://www.home-assistant.io/components/cover.template/#open_cover
I guess a 60 pound pi easily ends up 100+
@sacred valve Wrong channel - please read the channel topics before posting
🤦
@clever mortar quoting Roger waters or just stating currency?
Yes
quid

Go stand in the corner and think about what you just said......
question for you guys, I'm having the electrical panel changed in my house. What sensor should i add? which one do we like?
If I recall correctly, these days US cent coins cost something like 1.8c each to mint....
we don't like to talk about that
Stop making them! Lincoln is on the $5 note anyway! 😄
that's centsless
tbh i wish we got rid of coins altogether
you can't hardly buy shit for less than $1 nowadays
guys the battery on my pebble time round is starting to weaken
pls halp
There's a subreddit and pebble specific forums that can help you there
oh i know, it's just from age. i've had it for almost three years now
i'm sad to see it go
So replace the battery 😉
yeah, it's probably gonna come to that point. it's hard to find though because it's a weird voltage, 3.8v
Got speaker for the bedroom, may have overspecced them a bit 😄
Was offered the slightly bigger version of what I wanted, and they definitely have enough power!
Thats a leafier suburb
But only like one over from where I am
And would probably cost $700/qrt in heating/cooling costs too
You need like $160-$180k cash just to get a mortgage for 'decent' area family homes :/
Renting is so much cheaper at the moment
But our tenancy laws are non existant. We have mandatory inspections every 3 months and we can't even put 3M command hooks on walls, let alone drill anything
Means I have to get.. creative. When it comes to mounting things
Renting makes me sick. We are moving interstate soon and will have to rent again for about 12 months. Not looking forward to it.
The ridiculous thing. If you send in an application there’s a clause that says if your application is accepted you AGREE to sign a tenancy agreement
🤣 I will still be connected to CBR.
It’s still government work
oh lol
😂
Damn though, hope you can buy soon
Yeah me too. We should be able to but just tossing up what the best options are. Renting gives us an opportunity to get the lay of the land
northern country NSW
Hopefully houses are cheaper at least :)
about 8 hour drive so not too far in this country
lol
yeah they are cheaper and proper back yards
I driven from Canberra to Darwin so it's not that far
I've always done long driving. When I was playing cricket we would always have visiting poms and when we had to drive to Albury to play or Newcastle they would freak out about how far it was to drive 😂
haha fair enough
Albury is always the place I stop on the way to Melbourne
get some Hungry Jacks
Yeah can't go wrong with a whopper or three
heh for sure
The Whopper is the best fast food burger in my opinion
Hungry Jack's is Burger King over here in the US
They have a lot of burger choices here, some ncie ones with onion rings and stuff
The rodeo burger is awesome
Driving is the worst
Bring on uber Drones
I've done Perth-Melbourne-Perth as a passenger
Not by choice
Maybe I only say that since we have such little traffic
and lots of fun roundabouts
StOp lIkinG thIngS I doNt lYke
We have lots of traffic lights and very little round abouts
And heavish traffic
My peak hour commute is 250% the time of off peak
@scenic radish replaced my pebble with a Xiaomi amazfit bip, does everything the pebble did and more, and 33 day battery life
Can you control spotify
I cannot, but my h headset does, so I don't miss it
That's probably the main thing I'd want in a smart watch
Is being able to pause/skip etc
My headphones do it too but half the time the media player controls aren't connected to the right app
I have never had issues with that, for as long as I have had headset control
Samsung 🤷
They have their own bluetooth media player thing which is never how you want it
What about push notifications
Smartwatch? What about Huami Amazfit X?
@hushed basalt Use both Sony BT headphones and media system in XC60 with Samsung and never had issues with media player integraion, either podcast or music player.
Whatever of the two apps was last active gets the button press notifications.
Same here 🤷
Even happily accepts button presses from Garmin watch if I remember the watch can do it 😄
I blame Australia
We have stupid headphone volume warnings, do you?
And I have to open my phone to override it, even when it's going to the car Bluetooth
We have those
Yup, at least once a day if I've got the volume up.
Huh, I've not seen those
Sydney AU folks.. tomorrow night's Infra-Coders Meetup has been taken over by Home Assistant! Two long term users (myself and Jurgen Weber) talking plus a live demo, beverages, food and DevOps networking...
(we're hoping to get enough interest to make it a stand alone "house coders" offshoot meet-up too)
@clear ferry No music controls though which I use a lot :/
I was supposed to go to a jr dev meetup tonight
But I'm too sick :'(
Plus a devops meetup tomorrow night but I doubt I'll be better
Kids man. They're little incubators
I've been sick like 4 times this year.
My kid hasn't been sick once yet
Starting kindergarten in December though
Didn't Australia make it mandatory for vaccines in kindergarten or something now? Hope we get that here soon
I don't get the concept of boosting the server, I don't see any difference in functionality whatsoever
There's extra gloss and glitter
@last plaza It's sort of similar to the Flare mentioned in Officespace 😉
like the chachkies ? 🙂
Same idea!
PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?
It's telling you to shove some US sized paper in the bin 😉
that was a classic movie! no matter how many times I watch, it is still funny!
Mike Judge is a severely underrated writer in my opinion
@scenic radish You know that the Linux Kernel still has a "Printer On Fire" error message, legitimately!
Dating from a time that printers could jam and go up in flames 😄
HTTP 418. ’Nuf said.
That's amazing lol
Home Assistant should really start using some of these https://github.com/joho/7XX-rfc
I love 707, and the whole 2.9 set on principle
There's an old internal facing project where I dropped a few of them in for "impossible" situations. While our red team was hammering it, they found a few 🙂
@scenic radish Thanks!!
what's everyone's favorite automation that you've made
how does esxi run on a nuc vs proxmox. only purpose is to be able to run a test version on side of production HA
@scenic radish Maybe we should ban you, for posting off topic questions 😛
I'm pretty sure there's a forum thread on that topic though
Autumn 😛
same
the two days we call summer up here
i always look forward to summer ending because i'm hot all the time
thank goodness for air conditioning
truth be told I hate hot weather. Anything above 25 Celsius is awful
snow is horrible
I like snow
Snow is only horrible if you get too much of it (all the time) or almost never get any
some people around here don't know how to drive in it though
^^^ that's the biggest problem
lmao
You can have a heated pavement, so that you never have to plow the snow. We are planning on concrete driveway, if it is reasonable price, I may go for it. Then I can automate the floor heating.
With a ground source heat pump you could even do that at a reasonable level of running costs
That would be amazing
Yup. A decent snow blower would cost you around $800 usd. Might as well put in some more 💰 and get it done permanently.
but will it blend?
^^^ That’s the question!
the heated driveways was so popular here in norway in the 70s, but now with the power cost and keeping it warm enough at -15c not sure if its worth it.
We hardly get 1 month of heavy snow each year and not really worried about the costs. Just got a Honda snow blower, I prefer to have the problem solve itself without my involvement 😊
Rarely get snow in .ie
Real machines are called Unimog
When we do, the country just closes down.
Even in the USA, when it snows in areas that they are not used to, they go crazy. 2 inches of snow will close schools and offices.
There are places where there is 2 ft snow, business is usual.
We get a dusting of snow, and society collapses. No bread, milk, eggs or butter to be got for love nor money within minutes!
Ah!
Just constant slightly miserable weather and a week of Summer
When USA buys Greenland, we will have more snow filled land 😝
difference here its coming a meter of snow overnight
Same here @odd mason after long time.
I have been updating and keeping it current, but no major enhancements lately.
i got busy setting up a media server at home...have over 10TB of tv shows /movies already lol...at&t is probably not happy with my usage lol
i haven't updated HA in a while..still running 0.93.2. should probably update soon
I almost had heart attack last night when we had power failure and my ESXI wouldn’t start back up due to one of the drive failure.
The updates have been very smooth lately. No issues for me - at least on the major functionality that I rely on day to day.
If other things break, I am happy to remove that code and keep it simple.
I've had some fun with Unifi recently which required messing with json, other than that, upgrades tend to be painless.
Probably just after jinxing myself now 😄
good lord, 10TB??
That all?
we live in a society
also it's ok, i'm still on 0.95.4 because 0.96 made the generic climate component much slower to update in the frontend for me
In my previous job, if certain customers wanted an after hours quick job done, I'd just point them at my Amazon Wish List. So I ended up with a stupid sized DVD/CD collection. Ripped them all at decent quality, and it comes to a bit more than 10TB 😄
@scenic radish i've got 100TB zfs raid setup
lol
https://i.imgur.com/I5vKI86.png that's just from usenet. probably another 200GB from other sources
i don't think i use more than 100 GB of bandwidth each month at home lol
One of my colleagues accidentally wiped his fairly large NAS recently, EMC I think. As he pointed out after, RAID != Backup
oof
@strange vapor yup..i have 2 10TB hard drives for backup but i haven't set it up yet
got 4x 10TB in my synology with daily backup of essensial files, good enough for me as it can survive two disk crashes
bit overkill? :p
also looking for a cloud backup service that's affordable. heard gsuite business doesn't enforce data limit so i might try that. encrypt then backup whenever
@odd mason If you find one let me know!
im just using the cloud storage from synology just cause its simple and affordable
@strange vapor need a cloud backup? yea what do u recommend?
google one offers 2 TB for $100 USD/year
Have stuff I care about backed up as well as possible, but some of the DVD rips aren't backed up. Still have the original media so not too worried, but decent cloud backup that doesn't require a mortgage would be nice.
not sure if that's what you need though
@scenic radish nah that's too much for that
my data isn't worth that much. i can just redownload stuff if i need to
@odd mason I raise you the 2.2PB video storage I updated earlier this week
200 GB for $30/yr
@clear ferry Overkill much? 😄
@strange vapor scality grows indefinitely
wtf are you guys doing that you have that much data lmao
Just add nodes
@scenic radish lots of old tv shows lol. i'm a sucker for old shows i used to watch as a kid
How many KW of power do you pull?
@odd mason ah makes sense lol
i don't even worry about the power...what is it costing me? another 20-30 bucks a month? eh
yeah really do you guys have 500 amp service or something
any of you have tried those chinese i7 nuc clones?
@scenic radish It's a lot easier to run large systems here with 240V power.
dedicated load center for the personal space station
@scenic radish i just have a dell r720 but i created a DAS by following this: https://www.serverbuilds.net/16-bay-das
@strange vapor yeah that makes sense, the only 240V service i have is for my air conditioner, everything else runs on 120
and got 10 10TB HDD when they came on sale for 145/each
A funny thing I never realised till recently is that the kettles we take for granted in Ireland and UK aren't actually all that common on the continent as they really don't work as well on 110-120V
i do need to buy a backup power source
something to shut down gracefully when we have power issues
/r/homelab got me hooked lol
if anyone is paying for plex pass i highly recommend checking out Jellyfin. been using it for a bit now with 7+ users and it's been working great
hmm, that 16 bay das looks interesting....
Have a couple of Odroid HC1 a while ago, basically small ARM boards in a chassis with space for a SATA 3.5" drive. Was using them to learn Ceph the hard way.
Actually really nice little machines, was surprised at how well four of them worked together.
Currently have them running a Minio cluster doing fake S3 for me 🙂
nice
Wouldn't rely on them for "production" but a nice cheap way of messing with distributed file systems.
@odd mason why do you need 10TB? just upload it online, and let the world back it up for you 😛
I am also running out of space on my NAS, I need more drives now...
where?
Does that FUSE file system which turns gmail into "unlimited" storage still exist?
no idea never used it before
heh, not seeing anything about gmailfs past 2006, I guess they cut off the loophole being used 😄
I work on a unlimited storage method to download Torrents to and serve via plex
Yet I fail hard
@boreal pewter why do you fail?
I've got a pretty good system setup now where all downloads are processed to be MP4 format with AC3/AAC audio so it eliminates practically all transcoding needs.
Uuh - how you did that? I want that too
@hearty depot set this up: https://github.com/mdhiggins/sickbeard_mp4_automator
Underknowledge is away for 27m 59s with a message :point_right: zzzzZzZzZ..
it even handles subtitles for you if you want them
I don't transcode either
Nor converting
Strict client enforcement is where it's at
@hushed basalt what do u mean by client enforcement?
i don't have to do anything like that or maybe it's something i haven't thought of
Who is the resident server guru round these parts? I need advice lol
always best to ask first and see what answers you get
ah ok
I use apple tvs with infuse and that works really well
i do everything in x264 because no browsers even support hevc right now
Cheaper than the hardware and electricity costs of converting
I don't do any in browser viewing though
Well I’m looking for advice on my first server. Gonna scoop one from eBay as I’m tired of using my main PC for EVERYTHING
My upload bandwidth is limited too so hevc really helps
i figure i shouldn't have to worry about what my users watch stuff on
Problem is I don’t know squat about enterprise hardware
ah ok..i'm on a gigabit connection
Whats your use case rocky
@rapid musk i didn't either. still don't know too much but /r/homelab set me up. dell r720 you can get cheap. i got one with 192GB RAM and 1.2TB HDD that came with mine for like 600 bucks i think
Probably an Unraid server. I have tons of content I use through Emby and I’d like to familiarize myself with an actual server setup. Maybe screw around with virtualization
depends on if you need transcodes and what you might be doing with that virtuilization
Currently my main PC is in a Rosewill 4U 12 HDD case with consumer grade hardware. I7-7700k 32gb ram
But I recently had some power outages and it killed my OS on my SSD so I had to implement a UPS, which my old rack didn’t have room for...down the rabbit hole I go
hehe
Bigger rack, UPS, new OS now a big ass 25u rack with 2/3 empty lol
@rapid musk if your budget is 600-1k you can get a nice server setup with everything you'll need most likely
Was looking at the r720 and the dl380 but I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision. Steered in the right direction
most of the money will go into storage
I can always build on the storage, I just want a solid foundation to start building a storage pool on, with the benefit of RAID
I thought you said Unraid
Phone autocorrected, sorry. Unraid
I tried freenas and couldn’t get the hang of it. Not sure what my hang up was. It was a couple years ago. Figured I’d give Unraid a go
I like Unraid, I have been using it for a few months and its very easy to use
I think it was giving me too much crap about my drives
I am not really familiar with what competing products offer though
Well ZFS is faster iirc
Oh yeah Unraid is not for performance
but for media which is what you sound like you want it for its good
easily expandable, which i find handy
Exactly. I’m just a tinkerer that’s never satisfied, so I need a new project, and a server is on the radar
Plus, I have to fill some space in this rack, right? Haha
hah exactly
I've worked off guides by this guy before, this one could serve you well if you dont need a heap of computing power https://forums.serverbuilds.net/t/nas-killer-4-0-build-guide-fast-quiet-power-efficient-and-flexible-starting-at-125/667
[NAS KILLER 4.0 BUILD GUIDE] [JOIN THE DISCORD] Objective Update the NAS Killer line of builds to iteration 4.0. Moving on to socket 1155, we should be able to see much better performance and power usage, while maintaining the expected low price targets. This guide will fea...
He tends to favor white box builds
Lol, alright. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the r720 or the dl380...
I'm not super familiar with using either but I know they can be a bit limited on internal storage and can be a bit noisy, but if that works for you then sweet
Yeah, noise is kind of a concern, but it’s not like I sleep next to the rack. It lives in the garage
Fair enough
Which just so happens to be behind my head when I sleep through a wall lol
But hell, that’s where my wall hung boiler hangs as well so...
jellyfin on an LXC container works great from my experience
i'm loving proxmox over the past 8 months or so that i've used it
I’m pretty freakin pleased with Emby
I use plex 🦆
eh...i like free stuff lol
i heard that you need an internet connection to authenticate?
I ditched Plex because my streams timed out and I hated how when I cut the cord, it wouldn’t still be on and playing when I turned the TV back on the next day
Meaning after a certain period it would just stop using bandwidth. Bugged the hell outta me
I'm not sure I really follow rocky
i've made it a habit of only buying/installing things that don't need an internet connection to work. although my internet is pretty solid i want it to work regardless of what's going on outside
Switched to Emby because it would play indefinitely...well I hit my data cap 2 months in a row and now I’ve turned on the “are you still watching” feature on Emby lol
jellyfin is emby..only free and open source
Some of my premium stuff might not work without an internet connection but I believe everything else would, which is fine for me
same core code base but they've split off to keep it FOSS
How does that help a guy that bought Emby premiere last Black Friday for $99 though? I may give it a whirl
I imagine jellyfin will be much more appealing in a year or two, once its had more time
is it a one time payment or a yearly subscription?
as it is plex is really polished and has a lot of supported clients
that said I haven't personally tried jellyfin
yea they're working on clients. android clients just went live a few weeks ago
but i use it in the browser on my iphone and it works great
and i use it via kodi on my main tv
One time, for life
ah ok then you're set @rapid musk
My main client is an Apple TV, I assume they're not there yet
And it works locally regardless of an outside connection
yea not there yet @ocean mirage
I hope they do well
@rapid musk how does it authenticate to show you're a subscriber if u don't need an internet connection?
I assume that’s stored locally since once you type in your premiere key, it just always stays active as a premiere license
interesting
Without an outside connection I can still watch my OTA channels via my HDHomeRun and my DVR and my stored movies...obviously the IPTV stuff goes offline without a connection though
All through Emby
nice
Have a few scripts that run EPG123 with schedules direct to always keep 14 days of guide data, and use xTeVe for the IPTV tuner setup. Works amazing
Mine too, I’ve noticed. We have it and rarely watch it. I watch some UFC stuff, and some HBO and Showtime stuff, but that’s it really. I bought a year pass back in Feb for $120. Not sure I’ll renew
Oh yeah, sports too, I do watch sports...damn. I’m stuck lol
yea paying a bit for some usenet stuff seems to be better for me
i can download a 40GB movie and have it processed and indexed in jellyfin in less than 10min usually
Nice
my bro in law asked for Judge Judy the other day
i obliged but i still judge him for it
HA!
https://i.imgur.com/FqtkXlO.png he's been watching it constantly
Yeah my parents live in The middle of nowhere and are tied to satellite but they are growing to love accessing my Emby server since they have no OTA channels, plus I get everything
yea parents is the one thing i'm surprised with. mine are in their 60s and pull up stuff on their phone and cast to their TV regularly
only had to show them once
Yep, I bought my mom a nvidia shield and set it up and she hasn’t really looked back. Loaded Emby and Netflix and she’s always on my server lol
nice
She’s spoiled with my symmetrical gigabit connection
