Gua bao (traditional Chinese: 割包; simplified Chinese: 刈包; pinyin: guàbāo; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: koah-pau; literally: 'cut bread'), also known as pork belly buns, ambiguously, bao, or erroneously as the bao bun ("bao" means "bun" so the translated name "bun bun" is redundan...

Dim sum (Chinese: 點心; pinyin: diǎnxīn; Cantonese Yale: dímsām; the literal meaning is debated, see the etymology section) is a style of Chinese cuisine. Dim sum is commonly viewed as Cantonese, although other varieties exist, and is prepared as small bite-sized portio...

Hey everyone! I have a work-related question for you! We have a operations room, with 4 work stations. On each workstation we have an two-way audio panel that we use for communication with up to 64 destinations. These panels have analog in/out on the back, and we want to use them with a wireless headset. I was starting doing research for this, and I am unable to find any bluetooth adapters that support two-way simultaneous audio?? Does anyone know of something we can use??

@boreal pewter by the way since when you are tinkering with HA and Raspberry?

I have done a very active setup, I think a few months ago and I only had the Pi 2b for years with no use. But the speed was soooo fucking annoying. It is 2019 and everything that takes more than 5 seconds is just to long IMO so I built my Deskmini now

Do you think one should use NodeRed or learn proper Text like automations instead?

#

without gui

unreal orbit
#

"Proper text automation" lol. You're going to get opinions, but ultimately you need to do what feels best to you. There is no "proper" way to do it. Node-red can interact with more things than just HA, so yaml automations are not really comparable.

clear ferry
#

I prefer classic automations 🤷

boreal pewter
#

I prefer AI that does what I want even before I know I want something

late gate
#

depends on the amount and complications maybe?

boreal pewter
#

I just dunno where to get it

light trout
#

Some folks call that a wife 🤷

unreal orbit
#

That's because you don't have complicated automations 😉 @clear ferry

boreal pewter
#

Well my wife requires me to know what she wants before she knows that she wants something

light trout
#

That sounds more corerct, I might have mixed up the role management there

clear ferry
#

@unreal orbit I'm an easy guy 😛

late gate
#

I do what im being told or hell is loose

clear ferry
#

Damn we got a lot of turbulence going down now

unreal orbit

When it comes down to it for me, node-red automations can do anything a HA automation can do. It does not go the other way around.

clear ferry
#

People scared of flying will be worried 😂

late gate
#

@clear ferry those people have not been landed in the himalayas. when I went there it was a quite strange experience landing and taking off as the runway was not long enough

unreal orbit
#

The only exception is having an automation with HA starting as the trigger. Even then it just doesn't work as well in node-red, but still semi-possible

clear ferry
#

Had a friend go there, he said it was the strangest flight ever

#

Straight up, then landing

@midnight adder if a pi is out of reach where you are, maybe you could find an old used laptop. You could install linux, and do almost anything on it!

clear ferry

When I move to zigbee2mqtt maybe I should install a new instance of home assistance, with the old ZigBee gateways connected to stuff, and a webcam, and people can login and turn my lab lights on and off and watch me get annoyed irl 😂

orchid rose

the modern cpus are really good at energy saving. Twenty years ago it was slightly different

#

stop abusing it atxbyea!

clear ferry
orchid rose
#

I actually haven't marked how much my current setup uses. I used to for years and it was weird because after every upgrade the consumption just fell

clear ferry
#

I had a G4 setup with 2x1 core, 12gb ram and 6 drives, used 500w, my current g7 with 2x12core plus 192gb ram and 14 drives, plus 10g switch and blade enclosure is 290

orchid rose
#

hehe, ye

fallow hedge
#

if @midnight adder is from a developing country, the cost of electricity could be a financial burden. I can see why the 5w of a pi is appealing

orchid rose
#

it depends on what sort of laptop you can get for the same money, but the recent ones should be pretty efficient as well

#

NUC is about the same as a Pi and uses laptop components afterall

fallow hedge
#

ya, and with undercolting the processor, he could get it down

clear ferry
#

My laptop has a 150w PSU OverThink

orchid rose

that PSU alone probably uses the five watts 😄

Or more monkaPeek

orchid rose

Got to love Google sometimes. I found a study on laptop power consumption

fallow hedge
#

out of curiosity, what country do you live in @midnight adder ?

orchid rose
#

...it's from 2004

midnight adder
#

Hungary

#

If it needs to go all day 100-200 watt is a lot sadly

orchid rose
#

my gaming PC uses less than that and it's from 2011 and overclocked

unkempt umbra
#

my NAS consumes 50watts

fallow hedge
#

i think an optimized laptop could run in the 25w range under low load

orchid rose
#

in case someone is interested, a Lenovo ThinkBook 13s idles at 3.1-6.6 watts

#

home assistant would count mostly as idle load I feel, but I could be wrong

unreal orbit
#

Depends on what you're using it for

fallow hedge
#

nevertheless, i've always thought its amazing how people who dont have huge resources find creative solutions. good job @midnight adder for coming here and getting help!

orchid rose
#

cameras and such would increase the load significantly, so I can only really speak for my setup which doesn't seem to use any resources at all from a x86 cpu

fallow hedge
#

maybe an esp device could accomplish the same thing. Esp if it's just some triggers and conditions

#

What could run on a wemos d1 and act as a barebones home-assistant?

orchid rose
#

you'd quickly run out of memory on those I guess

#

51MB on mine right now

fallow hedge

what if he let somebody else pay for power. Deploy on a free hosting provider, maybe zeit, and have everthing talk to the cloud

wonder if I should buy something like this:

#

or a Raspberry Pi4 4 Gig memory

hushed basalt
#

Containers for life

#

Vms are for infrastructure nerds who like to burn capital, memory and power :D

past idol
#

😄

#

@clear ferry

#

guys, what if I buy an external ssd now install linux on it with HA on my PC

#

and when Pi/mini pc arrives i just plug the external ssd in

#

it wont work right? as the components change

past elm
#

@past idol If it was such easy, everyone would have don it 😄 Sadly, OSes are still huge dependant of the hardware and making those kind of pre-installation is still not so easy to do

boreal pewter
#

@midnight adder vacation mood with some salt and pepper, or rather when not working at work with servers I work at home with servers

midnight adder
#

@boreal pewter Sounds good 😄

past idol
#

@past elm maybe you are right 😄

#

i figured it out

#

i will use my old laptop

#

however I do not have a micro sd reader or anything

#

therefor i will use my old phone to put in the micro sd plug it to the laptop and install linux / ha on it 😄

#

master plan 😄

boreal pewter
#

Err

#

Why?

past idol
#

@boreal pewter 😄 using VMWare currently and there is still 2 weeks until I get my hands on Zigbeemqqt dongle and raspberry pi4 or some mini pc

#

and i want something i can run whole day

#

I cannot do it with my pc

#

a laptop consumes less power dho

boreal pewter
#

Yeah, having an old laptop implies for me at least that it at least has a HDD. And even a 2,5" 5900RPM 64MB Cache HDD is better than attaching somehow a SD card to it IMO

past idol
#

maybe

#

it has an ssd

#

but its nearly full

boreal pewter
#

Even better...

past idol
#

so i needed to create a new partition

#

and i also fear for data loss

#

this ssd is full of important files

#

yet I have not managed to backup them

boreal pewter
#

How can you fear data loss using proper HA-backup strategies?

past idol
#

you mean?

#

currently they are out of raspberry pi here sadly 😄

#

cannot get ahold of one

boreal pewter
#

Well you usually would want to have all data on a seperate huge HDD/server/device, having the most important things on 2 more USB things and have another decentral paid backup server like Backblaze

#

That would at least be the standard

past idol
#

yeah

#

not managed to build a system like this, yet

boreal pewter
#

For me it's a 8TB HDD for 139 bucks and backblaze, as well as private Git repos and USB sticks

past idol
#

I am planning this for quite a while

#

also want a private NAS to backup things

#

yet there were more important things

#

or maybe i just do not know how important is this until i gets lost

#

it*

boreal pewter
#

With NAS, the cheapest option to use backblaze would probably not be possible. So calculate some more bucks per month for that one

past idol
#

I never heard of backblaze, though not sure I trust it

#

I do not really trust my data on cloud services, like google drive, one drive, icloud etc

#

not like that i have so many things to hide, yet the idea that strangers go through my things feels yuck

boreal pewter
#

In that case money isn't an issue for you then, because dedicated storage boxes aka server itself cost a lot more than those options 😄

past idol
#

ah

boreal pewter
#

And even then the hoster will most likely still have backdoors, as well as hardware issues which can quickly lead to data loss

unreal orbit
#

Or you could encrypt everything you upload to the cloud

past idol
#

that would be great

#

yeah that is right Villhellm better option

boreal pewter
#

Yep

past idol
#

but i thought i will build a nas with raid drives and backup to those

#

and put my few important stuff on an external hard drive or something

#

it is not that expensive I think

unkempt umbra
#

depends on size of NAS array

past idol
#

yeah maybe but around 5 TB is more then enough for me now I think

#

I've got around 1 TB data right now that I need to backup

unkempt umbra
#

thats what I said when I built a 10 TB array

past idol
#

😄

unkempt umbra
#

64% full

past idol
#

one cannot have enough storage space, ever

boreal pewter
#

At work we once argued about backup strategies. There is one simple thing. What happens if your house burns down? And I think that's all said.

past idol
#

I will burn with my nas

unkempt umbra
#

nas is small enoufh to carry

past idol
#

a captain never leaves its burning nas

#

what if im not in the house?

boreal pewter
#

It doesn't need to happen when you're home...

unkempt umbra
#

...oh...

#

bad plan then

past idol
#

home assistant warns me if there is a fire, home assistant notifies my muscular neighbor who kicks down the door gets ahold of the nas and escort it to safety

#

its all planned 😉

boreal pewter
#

You simply can't argue against decentral backups 😄

past idol
#

yeah, that seems the best option anyhow

#

that is how big companies do it also

unreal orbit
#

Or anyone that cares about their data

past idol
#

right now I have only 500 gb ssd in my pc 😄

#

and it is full with skyrim mods and vmware linuxes 😄

unkempt umbra
#

ah yes... pet linuxes in cages

past idol
#

😄

#

so there is room to improve certainly

#

in a lot of fields

midnight adder
#

@past idol you want a Pi?

past idol
#

not sure about that

boreal pewter
#

My PC has 2x 500GB NVME with 3GB/s and a 750GB SATA3 SSD, I have some external HDD and SSD as well as USB sticks, an external 8TB HDD as central backup drive to backup to Backblaze + a copy of the whole PC itself, another 500GB NVME with 1,5GB/s in the Deskmini, an old 250GB SSD in my not used old Gaming Laptop with an i7, 1TB NVME SSD in my Macbook Pro

past idol
#

will see. Pi 4 with 4 gigs of ram seems quite appealing to me

#

jeez

#

my eyes dried out of these GB datas

#

I will post you a few gigs of data if its fine

boreal pewter
#

lol

past idol
#

if you could store it for a few months that would be great 😄

#

somewhere in the corner

boreal pewter
#

I still have my dedicated server from a hoster with 8TB HDD which still carry all my Torrents and Media. I host no Media locally!

past idol
#

I wanted to ask Jazz but he is almost full you see 😄

boreal pewter
#

I still think about a 4 bay case for 3;5" to fill with 8TB HDD's and use my Deskmini as the main server then but idk

past idol
#

hmm

#

i am kind of sick of HDD's

#

struggled with WD Black for years

#

it was loud, slow, loud, and then it died

#

decided that I would never buy a hdd again for normal PC use

boreal pewter
#

Well if you Torrent 4k movies where each has like up to 80GB as well as 300GB series packs then you have to be millionair

past idol
#

of course backuping is other things

#

thing*

#

I am fine with 1 tb space in my comp

unreal orbit
#

Hard drives are good for data backup if you have them in a raid array. In a workstation they are quite painful to use

past idol
#

and the ssd prices are not that bad in that segment

#

@unreal orbit you are right

boreal pewter
unreal orbit
#

I just installed a couple SSDs in my home computer, but my work computer still has a hard drive. It is one of the reasons I don't like coming to work.

clear ferry

I have ssds in every machine I have

#

And we sell 95% ssds to customers 😂

#

32TB ssds, only $100.000 each, let's order 200 of those

past idol

@unreal orbit 😄

#

@clear ferry nice, one would be great of that indeed 😄

No.

past idol

by the way which linux distribution are you guys using?

clear ferry

Slackware from 97-03, Debian ever since dogekek

boreal pewter

It's just up to what you prefer then

Hey there, I have a quick question about google assistant and home assistant (I'm asking here because I'm not sure that would fit in #330944238910963714 ), I've seen multiple people using HA with GA to control their house (like to light up hue bulbs for example) because it's faster and doesn't need to make the roundtrip request to the google servers.

Is that the case ? I mean, is there a way to setup google homes so their request first goes to the local HA (and if it can't handle the request, gets sent to the google servers) ?

boreal pewter
#

Well I'm not correct. Even better

#

I was almost afraid I hear

unkempt umbra

I got the home to use for my grandfather clock automation.

@boreal pewter that is nice, it is around 40+ usd now

unkempt umbra

I chase deals, and get amazon gift cards for doing surveys and such

past idol
#

can you think of any good mini pc that appears regularly on ebay or somewhere

#

and the price tend to be good?

#

I am looking for something around 100 usd

unkempt umbra
#

hmm.

past idol
#

thinking of a new Raspberry pi 4 with 4 gigs of ram

#

yet, maybe you have a better alternative in your mind

unkempt umbra
#

that's sweet... but my laptop came from ebay for about $100.

#

replaced screen, and battery

#

for about 30 more

boreal pewter
#

If you're really just interested in HASS and don't tend to become a SysAdmin and build a concert of Services a Pi should be enough

#

And the Pi4 isn't too weak also, if you can live to rely on ARM

unkempt umbra
#

my HA solution is a docker container on my NAS of many things

#

NAS runs my channels DVR container, which hosts my OTA and CaTV dvr

#

runs emby for 6 TB of local video.

past idol
#

hmm

#

Piii's around 70-80 usd

hearty depot
past idol
#

same price on ebay as I see

#

plus i need a case an adapter, an ssd

#

@unkempt umbra how familiar are you with VMware ?

#

what do you think of this guys?

unkempt umbra
#

moderately.. before nas, had esxi host.

past idol
#

In your opinion why should I consider a more powerful PC?

#

I mean a Raspberry is good

boreal pewter
#

lol no

past idol
#

but if I invest in something better

boreal pewter
#

No no no

past idol
#

can I create other stuff with it

#

lol Anon why not? The thing you linked also uses 2400 g aint it? 😄

#

explain to me please

boreal pewter
#

The mainboard + case + USP costs MUCH more than a Deskmini A300 which has that already built in. For cost efficiency use it. Now you would NOT take a 2400g because the 3400g has MUCh more power regarding almost no more cost. And very important, for Ryzen you take at least 3000Mhz CL16 RAM

unkempt umbra
#

I am a big fan of the PI.. just gave 3 to my son in law

clear ferry
#

AMD🤢

boreal pewter
#

And yeah I use a 140 bucks 3400g ordered in the first week of release

#

And that one even punishes an i7 6700 😉

clear ferry
#

Skylake Platinum or bust

boreal pewter
clear ferry
#

No Platinum 8180M

#

Shitty comparison tool 😛

past idol
#

could you link a deskmini?

boreal pewter
#

Depending on the benchmark it may vary up to 10%. But that's always the case. However this is a.. I think officially 170$ CPU vs a 300+$ CPU? While they're both almost the same level

unkempt umbra
#

and it is how much of an overkill ...

past idol
#

so the basic deskmini a300 is without a processor right?

#

and without anything

#

is it just a case and a psu?

#

and a mb

boreal pewter
#

Yeah, you need CPU, cooler, RAM and SSD. That's it. That made me an overall of 450€

#

Regarding I choose 16GB 3000Mhz CL16 RAM and 500GB NVME SSD

#

It's still to consider, 130€ in my case for case + motherboard + psu

past idol
#

I see

boreal pewter
#

And if I go to extend it for storage as said, I would simply choose a 4 bay USB 3.1 case and fill with HDD's

clear ferry
past idol
#

atx pc with used parts would be cheaper

#

yet it is not that small

boreal pewter
#

Used parts = old generation parts = less power and efficient

#
  • no guarantee
#

There are builds for currently suggested 1155 socket, used

clear ferry
#

Just buy a Superdome Flex while you are at it, plenty of performance and room to grow

boreal pewter
#

You're noob if you don't have an IBM Mainframe at home right @clear ferry

clear ferry
#

I prefer x86 over propiatary z systems 😛

past idol
#

@clear ferry looks promising 😊

#

yeah but for HA I do not really need power @boreal pewter

#

so i am looking for alternative usages

#

should I use it as a back up device also?

boreal pewter
#

As I said JUST for HASS a Pi is enough

past idol
#

I mean buying a 300-400 eur pc just for ha is overkill 😄

#

yeah I know

#

yet on the long run it could be better

#

i mean i could easily upgrade it

#

it is good for other stuff too apart from running HA

#

just thinking about my options

boreal pewter
#

I wouldn't pay 80$ for a Pi tho, we had it in germany on deal last week for 40€ with shipping

#

Usually things ain't worth more for me than the cheapest price ever available

past idol
#

for real? which one?

boreal pewter
#

The 4 4GB

past idol
#

oh my 😄

#

and where? could not I order these from outside germany somehow?

#

i mean it is half the price 😄

boreal pewter
#

Probably but they were on deal for only one day or so, long off

past idol
#

poor Wild guy should have been in Germany

#

😄

#

I think even he could get that for 40 usd 😄

boreal pewter
#

I get those deals from a huge well known german page (the actually only one tho) so there're easily 100k orders

#

We often even take down pages by accident 😄

past idol
#

Haha

#

and what if i purchase a nas?

#

like a synology ds 218+

#

i bet it could manage HA and also create a backup

unkempt umbra
#

QNAP or synology

#

both are good

past idol
#

Do you think is qnap better regarding the prices?

unkempt umbra
#

don't know.. but I like my qnap

past idol
#

I see

#

thank you

#

will check them

#

which one do you suggest around 300$?

unkempt umbra
#

hmm let me look:

#

upgraded to 8 GB, and 4 4TB drives

#

you need it to run docker...

#

not sure which nas boxes are docker capable.

hearty depot
#

@boreal pewter the DeskMini looks Awesome - you got HA running on one of this fellas?

boreal pewter
#

I run it since yesterday on it, I built it together 2 days ago. And today I solved all errors regarding ADB, MQTT and Deconz

hearty depot
#

you know the feeling under the fingers...

boreal pewter
#

450€ with fast and fair amount of RAM and NVME SSD

#

I maybe still extend the storage inside and external

hearty depot
#

a seccond network card would be awesome - dreaming bout pfsense 😛

fiery sorrel
#

hello :)
New here, and i jumped immediately in the channel i was interested in ... how rude of me.
So hi :) I'm new to HA, but i have played with other stuff before.
i'm a sysadmin so i may be able to help you if you don't just run a docker image :)

clever mortar
#

Welcome to the asylum 👋

fiery sorrel
#

a good one ? or a bad one ? :D

boreal pewter
#

Tinkerer is a good guy if you pet him sometimes

fiery sorrel
#

nha i mean what kind of asylum XD

clever mortar
#

Well...

#

Depends on which side of the wall you're on 😛

#

It's a money and time sink for sure

#

And many days it'll test your sanity

fiery sorrel
#

already run out of both, and i never heard of this sanity you speak about :'D

clever mortar
#

Well, if you're a sysadmin you have to be crazy

fiery sorrel
#

i'm a home-lab guy ... so yea the smarthome device budget is a bit short but i already have what i need for quite some time

#

hey !

#

not fair

clever mortar
#

I'm an ex sysadmin - I know what I'm talking about 😛

unkempt umbra
#

but it's true... former sysadmin here

fiery sorrel
#

ex, former ? did you both run out to live in the wild ? or downgrade to manage human instead of server ?

clever mortar
#

If you're not crazy at the start, after a few years of zombies (whether end users, management, or supposed co-workers) you'll be crazy soon enough 😉

unkempt umbra
#

I do service desk now, on contract

clever mortar
#

Oh no, I moved on and out - being "just" a system admin was boring, so I added databases, networks, and things, then moved to contracting "and stuff"

fiery sorrel
#

oh i see :)

clever mortar
#

If it has a network interface, I've probably fixed it or helped somebody fix it at some point

#

TCP/IP is purely optional 😉

unkempt umbra
#

but have you strung cable with a crossbow ?

fiery sorrel
#

sadly i'm kinda young, and abstraction in network is everywhere ... so i never did get my classic :(

clever mortar
#

You'll get plenty of opportunity to dig into the dark corners if you're interested

#

Indeed, I'd suggest that being interested in the edges of your knowledge is the only way to go, else you end up in the same job for decades, and hating it

unkempt umbra
#

amen tinkerer

clever mortar
#

Aka, if you're not learning, you're falling behind

fiery sorrel
#

in IT, that for sure

clever mortar
#

In life

unkempt umbra
#

yes

fiery sorrel
#

what is that ?

#

:D

clever mortar
#

Anybody I know who's approached any job as I know enough ends up in a dead end

unkempt umbra
#

those hours you wrap around work

clever mortar
#

Took me too long to get the work/life balance right - but I know enough who never have

fiery sorrel
#

well for now i'm 90% work 5% sleep 5% lunch ... speaking of which i'm beeing called upon ... i'll be back 👋

clever mortar
#

And 100% burn out material 😉

unkempt umbra
#

yeah

#

I've seen too many IT types burn out andgo do anything else.. ever know a couple who farm goats now.

clever mortar

An ex-boss of mine ended up with a nervous breakdown - and never went back to work. I know others who've had heart attacks or strokes through the stress, and not all of them survived.

clear ferry

I told my boss 12 years ago I'm a sponge, if I'm not challenged and learning something new I'll quit

#

I'm still there 😛

clever mortar
#

Yup. I need to be "having fun" to stay

#

For me that means learning, flexibility, and making a difference

unreal orbit

As soon as 5ghz IoT devices go mainstream I might revisit it

clear ferry
#

Just move already @unreal orbit😛

unreal orbit
#

but we just hit our first year in this house 😦

fiery sorrel
#

back ! wow, quite the talk, i don't want to end up at the bottom of a rope ... but there is so much to do that i don't have time to do anything else right now 🤔

clever mortar
#

There's always time - it's a matter of prioritisation

#

If you're having to work more than 8 hours at your job (excluding lunch) then either:

  1. You have too much to do
  2. There aren't enough staff - see (1)
  3. You don't have the skills needed yet - see (1)
  4. Your management are idiots - see (1)
#

Experience (and automation) allows you to get more done in less time, but it's also partly mindset.

fiery sorrel
#

i'm under 8H, because in my country we have what's call 35h a week ... so with the extra i'm around 7.5H

clever mortar
#

Good

fiery sorrel
#

what is killing is transport ...

clever mortar
#

Yeah...

#

I know too many folks who have to balance can afford to live here with can afford the commute - and it often results in a stupid commute

#

I think the record is about 3.5 hours, each way

#

That's about 2.5 hours above my personal maximum 😄

fiery sorrel
#

Oo

#

ok i'm a lazzy one then

#

more than 1H each way and i can't do it

clever mortar
#

I can, but I see no reason to

fiery sorrel
#

i'm still "young", so i go where i'm accepted. i start very early to avoid traffic and do what i can `:)

clever mortar
#

Just keep learning, and do put effort on the soft skills - that'll make a massive difference long term

fiery sorrel
#

soft ? you mean human ?

#

like coworker relationship ?

clever mortar
#

Yes

#

Communications, inter-personal skills, all that

#

It makes a significant difference to how people see you, how you come across in interviews, promotion, etc

fiery sorrel
#

i saw that a bit, so i do my best to "look" the way i should, but i do fall flat when i'm asked about hobbies "outside of tech"

clever mortar
#

Tech hobbies are fine too - it's about showing you're not just about work

fiery sorrel
#

can i ask from what country you'r from ?

clever mortar
#

UK

fiery sorrel
#

Thank :) France here but you knew that i'm sure XD
are raise and promotion mostly "capacity based" in the UK ?

#

or do you need to change company to really get a promotion

clever mortar
#

Depends on the organisation really

#

Sometimes you have to move, sometimes you'll get promoted internally

#

I think the reality is that for many folks you need to move sometimes just to get a fresh start

#

Avoid any pre-conceptions of the current employer, and give yourself new opportunities

fiery sorrel
#

I see, from what i have understand (cause i can't talk much about experience) here company see you as a purchase, so they rather see you leave and try to get you back later for way more, that give you a raise

#

so i try to learn all i can to ... "sell myself" beter :)

clever mortar
#

Yup, and that's where the communication skills, and how you come across (including body language) makes a huge difference

clear ferry
#

I enjoy travelling, I can drive 6h to get to customers 😛

clever mortar
#

It's also partly about how you talk about things
I was part of a team that...
I was a critical part of a team that...
I lead a team...

#

All three could be the same thing, but they position you differently in interview 😉

fiery sorrel
#

i guess beeing a sale's man can be really cool taxbyea :)

hey everybody, since I run HA i can not think about my apartment without. Yesterday a water pipe broke in front of my apartment on the road and a team of workers were there to fix. They closed the water for the whole building. Scared that some weird shit would happen to the electricity, I shat down the server.

I was a full day without HA. Man.. I did miss it.

clever mortar
#

I dunno

#

Turn up, kick the machine in the right spot, make everybody else feel dumb, leave with a grin

fiery sorrel
#

yeaaa, issus are very simple most of the time. but when they arent, it look more stressful since your only job here is to fix that stuff...

clever mortar
#

Oh, I agree, but experience, and learning how to solve problems, can turn that into fun

fiery sorrel
#

i wonder if a kick on the user in the right spot also solve issue 🤔 😀

clever mortar

For every WTF am I still employed moment I've had dozens of opportunities to pull rabbits from a hat

Just spent $300 on baby gates and accessories

#

Sigh

#

That could have been 15 xiaomi sensors! Damn kids haha

clear ferry
#

I have bought a lot of baby stuff used 😛

hushed basalt
#

I know but i needed like 4 gates

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I bought one gate, it came partly broke, got my money back, but kept the gate, bought a second gate on 50% off 😛

hushed basalt
#

I figured it would save me about $25 per gate to buy it second hand

#

But then I would have to hunt to find four different people with the exact lengths I need, drive around the city, to get half broken gates with hardware missing

tough igloo
#

We had our third earlier this year. We always try to get used baby hardware. Just need to throw an esp with relay controlling electro mag locks and sensors on the baby gates 😆

Ho didnt saw this chan

clever mortar

Or take the time to read the channel topics... 😉

boreal pewter

Channel names are enough already 😄

hushed basalt
#

I see no channel topics

boreal pewter
#

Then repair your Discord.

clever mortar
#

On mobile you have to click the channel name to see the topic

hushed basalt
#

Yes, I'll fix my discord

#

Just let me work for Discord and change their source code

boreal pewter
#

You're good if you change the sourcecode while not working for them. :P
Maybe you can just do a self-host Discord btw?

hushed basalt
#

Still can't find the topics anywere on android

#

Haven't really gone looking for them though

clever mortar
#

On mobile you have to click the channel name to see the topic

#

They're there on Android - that's what I just used to verify that what I saw earlier is still true half an hour later 😛

hushed basalt
#

I tries that

#

It just takes me to the channel settings

boreal pewter
#

I just tested and indeed, I can't see them either

hushed basalt
#

I found it

#

It's in the user lists

#

Swipe from right edge

clever mortar
#

🤔 I wonder if it's because all the servers I'm active on I'm also a mod/admin/whatever... must check one of the ones I don't use much

boreal pewter
#

Could have been moved with a lately update or so

hushed basalt
#

Yeah it's cause you're admin

clever mortar
#

Would appear to be the case

hushed basalt
#

I think the takeaway we can learn from this

#

Is that @clear ferry is wrong

fiery sorrel
#

have someone enable browser notification on the forum ? how bad or how good is it ? i usually instant nop ... but this community don't seam "abusive".

hushed basalt
#

I can't say, but you might be able to check what they're set to in your profile settings

#

It might say "notify on reply to your topic, direct message etc"

#

I assume it would be for those sort of things

fiery sorrel
#

me to, but because it's based on a forum engine, i'm kinda worry about what other notif the engine might set by default :)

hushed basalt
#

I think it's a managable risk

#

Unlike ecommerce sites

fiery sorrel
#

true :)

He was getting into home automation a little bit himself. He had three Alexa's and a Ring.

Heh. We all had the same idea to buy him an Alexa. So he got two echos and an echo dot

He really liked them. He'd wake up and have them play music or just ask Alexa questions.
