atxbyea: yeah, same here
Ah good one
Good taste @unkempt umbra @boreal pewter @clear ferry
I like Asian food too
Not as i have ate too much
I love the KFC crunch tho. There is nothing else comparable at fast food
I cooked miso soup once
@strange vapor awesome statue 🤣
Ramen is the most difficult I think?
But i am not@sure if those even count
Hmm, it is not that difficult
More like expensive i think
If you want authentic materials
Ingredients sorry
go for Bao buns and Dim-sum
Is that vietnamese?
chinees or at least asian

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum
I love wikipedia for this 🤣 both cineese
Gua bao (traditional Chinese: 割包; simplified Chinese: 刈包; pinyin: guàbāo; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: koah-pau; literally: 'cut bread'), also known as pork belly buns, ambiguously, bao, or erroneously as the bao bun ("bao" means "bun" so the translated name "bun bun" is redundan...

😛
I cannot tell how much I appreciate your help
Hey everyone! I have a work-related question for you! We have a operations room, with 4 work stations. On each workstation we have an two-way audio panel that we use for communication with up to 64 destinations. These panels have analog in/out on the back, and we want to use them with a wireless headset. I was starting doing research for this, and I am unable to find any bluetooth adapters that support two-way simultaneous audio?? Does anyone know of something we can use??
what is this funding?
For wildling a raspi
Ask him how much is still needed
as the lounge seems a bit dead today
@midnight adder If you're bored, I'd love som help with my issue! 😛
you want me to donate? 😄
just after you sir
ah kiddin
@fallow fox how can I help you?
@fallow fox I've used this with a bluetooth headset without issue: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CZ4C8K2
Participating at #the-water-cooler requires a donation at wildling 😛
@strange vapor So you connect a headset to it, and the you can listen in the headset and also use the headset mic?
As much as you want, I'm not Hitler 😄
Yup. Have used it with Skype and Zoom for work without issue.
@strange vapor Interesting!!
@strange vapor I will have to do a test with that!
until he gets the proper bluetooth dongle
Thank anyhow
Thank you again @boreal pewter for promoting my cause
@boreal pewter by the way since when you are tinkering with HA and Raspberry?
I have done a very active setup, I think a few months ago and I only had the Pi 2b for years with no use. But the speed was soooo fucking annoying. It is 2019 and everything that takes more than 5 seconds is just to long IMO so I built my Deskmini now

My Git is a bit documented too
I still would have to do dozens of stuff but I honestly just went into my lazy life-circle again
I haven't even added my new car yet into HASS
@boreal pewter Get one of @clear ferry's Synergy 12000 chassis'!!! I'm sure he'll do you a deal!
No 19" rack or huge things that disturb the view of my pretty small flat or my waifu kills me
Sure, but wouldn't your rather want the HPE The Machine prototype
Memory driven photonics supercomputer
Don't forget
His GitHub and his blog
I need to add a readme to my GitHub soon
Have a Walk Around
I currently setup my Deskmini, I started yesterday with the OS
Now I need to transfer all data from pi to it, correct the compose files and reconfigure everything
😄
Oh
You’ve got things to do 😄
how its going wild?
You need to take it outside its aquarium set it free in the nature and eventually it will be wild 😉
Whatever it is
whaat
this guy 😄
With the $$$ he becomes wild 😄
No 🤔
😂
Maybe i will
so for reel m8
Its around 5 people now
Going good
Thanks to these nice guys around
One pending of those but will arrive eventually
It is even more that I ever expected from strangers
I am quite stunned
HA I'm strange
Doctor or Mister? 😄
Life Goal achieved
😄
You can call me Miss
@clear ferry went to school with Bill Gates
I went to school with a guy who looked like bill gates atleast
Legends 😄
atxbyea invented the first lan ever
I atleast hosted one of the first lan parties in my hometown 🤷
In 1997 😛
Which still goes on today, for the 22 year
tg?
TromsøLAN
Or the one before it really
LunheimLAN
Also KvaløyLAN, KrokenLAN, NaIT, LANo and a few more 😛
ah cool. except to locals lans I have just been part of TG hehe
a long, long time ago when I worked in hw.no :p
Never been to TG, was too busy making better LANs 😛
tg was quite good back in the days when the main purpose was piracy and burn to cds hehe
Ah sounds interesting
Or, I was invited once to meet some crew there many years ago
Went to, stopped by for a few hours
I am a bit sad that I missed these good things
I had a show on the gathering tv on behalf on hardware.no man that was too stressy
Hah
Fun fact, the island I grew up on is called Monkey Island by the locals because there were so many gamers there
I hope i get ahold of it sometimes
haha, now I want to play monkey island :p
Few more infos and Ill start to write your bio 😄
Monkey Island is only playable if you have a Roland mt32!

were you part of #hw on irc or too young for that @clear ferry at least that was the norwegian gathering place for the root nerds :p
thats sad was a fun community
dont think the internet is that close knitted anymore in groups
@late gate maybe but this group is closely knitted enough to help me out 😄
atxbyea, I've been an irc junkie since '89
@unkempt umbra maybe he is already on the plane 😄
cpuld be.
@clear ferry There's a few Roland midi devices which can be started up in MT-32 mode, especially in the JV series 😄
@strange vapor fap!
I always wanted one, my cousin had a mt32
I need to get around to play with my Triton...
Sometime after Christmas
Looks like I'm heading for AWS Re:Invent this year 😃
Do you think one should use NodeRed or learn proper Text like automations instead?
without gui
"Proper text automation" lol. You're going to get opinions, but ultimately you need to do what feels best to you. There is no "proper" way to do it. Node-red can interact with more things than just HA, so yaml automations are not really comparable.
I prefer classic automations 🤷
I prefer AI that does what I want even before I know I want something
depends on the amount and complications maybe?
I just dunno where to get it
Some folks call that a wife 🤷
That's because you don't have complicated automations 😉 @clear ferry
Well my wife requires me to know what she wants before she knows that she wants something
That sounds more corerct, I might have mixed up the role management there
@unreal orbit I'm an easy guy 😛
I do what im being told or hell is loose
Damn we got a lot of turbulence going down now
When it comes down to it for me, node-red automations can do anything a HA automation can do. It does not go the other way around.
People scared of flying will be worried 😂
@clear ferry those people have not been landed in the himalayas. when I went there it was a quite strange experience landing and taking off as the runway was not long enough
The only exception is having an automation with HA starting as the trigger. Even then it just doesn't work as well in node-red, but still semi-possible
Had a friend go there, he said it was the strangest flight ever
Straight up, then landing
it was horrible lol people screaming
Or was that the one up to machu pichu maybe
nice place though, but never again vacation where you get altitude sicknes
I'm looking forward to Hong Kong, landing sideways in wind 😛
Wtf, multiple people dead after lightning in Poland
I sit outside in lightning storms
as long as you're shorter than a tree and not next to the tallest tree you should be fine 😄
And I'm making a lightning lamp for my daughter's room that will utilize WWLN in HA to trigger when lightning is near
I'm fat and sitting, I'll be ok 😛
Not sure if fat is a great insulator tbh
Sitting outside with a beer during a lightningstorm is one of my favorite things to do 😛
Sure is, repels the ladies, by logic it will repel lightning 😛
Love thunderstorms as well. As long as we're not sailing
I am here sorry guyz
@orchid rose @boreal pewter @unreal orbit @late gate @light trout Thank you for the answers
Then I think i will see when i get there
Btw where r u from guyz?

Hehe 😄
That looks like @doctor_mod
@boreal pewter do you think I should promote it once in a while?
Wildling, I think I finally caught my Nuc btw. 90€ for a i5 one from a 4-5 years ago. Maybe a bit pricey, but it does come with a keyboard etc
Ermeegerd keyboard
Maybe, it's getting evening in the most important continents and even @clever mortar is here to spend a buck
Is it a Yamaha one?
one thing less to buy 😛
I prefer spending pounds, while they still have some value @boreal pewter 😉
I guess for Wilfling that's is great too
Atleast one more month @clever mortar
We started a crowdfunding for him today midday for a Pi
coufh brexit
That cough sounds bad, you should see a doctor
getting dangerously close to taboo topics here 🙈
Taboo? Wtf is that

With my birth I signed the freedom of speech contract
Nein nein nein
So i Would be real grateful if you were so kind to contribute to my cause and my happiness a wee bit
Everythings counts guys if you will to help me out
Few guys helped me out already
Go to paypal.me/Wildling0720 and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.
Around 5-6 people helped me already. However if you cannot do it is is alright and thank you for even considering to help me with your own money.
I've got a bunch of Lira in a drawer somewhere
😄
I have NOK, USD and EUR so far
😄
The goal is around 90 eur, and i’ve already got around 30 from these guys in order to help my learning. Thanks to them again
Monopoly money will do
Or credits
Is there a reason you can't purchase a pi on your own?
@clever mortar can donate a gallon of haggis, must be worth something to someone
You only get them by the gallon if you've run them through the blender first...
Thanks for explaining @boreal pewter btw
@clever mortar can't get worse than before the blending 😛
Clearly somebody hasn't tried White Pudding
Being deserving is up to the donator to decide, I was just curious about the reason. No offense meant
@midnight adder if a pi is out of reach where you are, maybe you could find an old used laptop. You could install linux, and do almost anything on it!
When I move to zigbee2mqtt maybe I should install a new instance of home assistance, with the old ZigBee gateways connected to stuff, and a webcam, and people can login and turn my lab lights on and off and watch me get annoyed irl 😂
Damn kids !

or hook it up to twitter? then we can all tweet the lights on and off!

and have it reply to each tweet with a pic of the light
Nah a TrumpApproves picture
@fallow hedge yeah but Pi only uses a few watts
laptops won't use much more
@unreal orbit maybe u are right
I wasn't trying to make a point, just curiosity 🤷
Hell, my blade enclosure with server and networking only uses 290ish watts
the modern cpus are really good at energy saving. Twenty years ago it was slightly different
stop abusing it atxbyea!

I actually haven't marked how much my current setup uses. I used to for years and it was weird because after every upgrade the consumption just fell
I had a G4 setup with 2x1 core, 12gb ram and 6 drives, used 500w, my current g7 with 2x12core plus 192gb ram and 14 drives, plus 10g switch and blade enclosure is 290
hehe, ye
if @midnight adder is from a developing country, the cost of electricity could be a financial burden. I can see why the 5w of a pi is appealing
it depends on what sort of laptop you can get for the same money, but the recent ones should be pretty efficient as well
NUC is about the same as a Pi and uses laptop components afterall
ya, and with undercolting the processor, he could get it down
My laptop has a 150w PSU
that PSU alone probably uses the five watts 😄
Or more
Got to love Google sometimes. I found a study on laptop power consumption
out of curiosity, what country do you live in @midnight adder ?
...it's from 2004
my gaming PC uses less than that and it's from 2011 and overclocked
my NAS consumes 50watts
i think an optimized laptop could run in the 25w range under low load
in case someone is interested, a Lenovo ThinkBook 13s idles at 3.1-6.6 watts
home assistant would count mostly as idle load I feel, but I could be wrong
Depends on what you're using it for
nevertheless, i've always thought its amazing how people who dont have huge resources find creative solutions. good job @midnight adder for coming here and getting help!
cameras and such would increase the load significantly, so I can only really speak for my setup which doesn't seem to use any resources at all from a x86 cpu
maybe an esp device could accomplish the same thing. Esp if it's just some triggers and conditions
What could run on a wemos d1 and act as a barebones home-assistant?
what if he let somebody else pay for power. Deploy on a free hosting provider, maybe zeit, and have everthing talk to the cloud
@fallow hedge thank you however i feel a bit shamed by it
And still not sure that the money will get together
As none sent any in the past few hours
Thank you for the numbers
Around electricity
It is quite interesting
And useful
Damn one of the AMD Epyc dropped hard in price, https://www.hardwarehouse.de/product_info.php?products_id=7869026
Get those 48 threads 🤣
lol - here I sit on my i5-7600K
I yet have 3 AMDs, 3400g in the deskmini and 2 2700x in the gaming rigs
got a nice saying here in german.
intel den arsch auf Ryzen
I've heard 2200G is quite good for mini pc rigs
If I were to set up home assistant in a pi, and attached it to a router that has no WAN coming in, and will only be LAN- will I be able to use it to utilize automation in things like lights, etc? I know google searches and stuff probably won't work, more so looking for the automations
@ruby quiver ha is a grate cloud replacement. Done this in an mountainhouse with some tasmota switches.
Anything you control locally will work
Tuya for example will not work with stock firmware, nor will any other cloud dependent hardware
Awesome news, plan to set it up in a mobile trailer to control the entire thing (going to be pretty sweet)
& it wont have access to WAN, period, so its REALLY good news HA doesn't need it 🙂
not quite understanding how such things work, I think.
Fanboyz
I hate apple since 2013
(my ha runs on a MacBook pro btw )
the reason for my rage to this company btw
What iz Apple card
Well, obviously, you're storing it wrong.
Looks like just a credit card
Trust Apple to 'revolutionize' things

I prefer this one https://youtu.be/cvXZVJXIyqM
they are all good lol
hello
Yes, it will be better than a pi probably
I see
rather old dho
Wonder whether if its an integrated itx . Because as far as i know itx boards are rather new formats
No they're not
No, i had an itx machine almost 20 years ago
Really?
Mini-ITX is a 17 × 17 cm (6.7 × 6.7 in) motherboard, developed by VIA Technologiesin 2001.[1] T
If have the money and want something modular, extendable and future-proof you simply take a Deskmini A300
how your day going guyz?
lounge seems quite today
Yeah I will
or a nuc not sure yet
Well as said, what I said is not a NUC
modular, extendable and future-proof
can it even run Crysis Anon?
= no NUC
Inafraid it would be overkill
Nuc, pathetic 😛
The Nuc I was supposed to buy for 90€ went to someone else for 100€. Damn capitalism...
Give me something with 10 fans and 10 or 40g Ethernet 😛
You r laughing on it?! 😄 how u dare
Lol AMD, pathetic 😛
You managed to raise the funds Anon?
Nah
The only reason I am thinkin bout getting one sooner is that vmware seems to produce strange anomalies
Running os based virtualization is meh always, if you only had proper virtualization 😛
My cpu doesn't support virtualization 😐
however i like solving problems
along with hou guys hehe
i ask
you to solve it
😄
@orchid rose is it from 2001? Because any modern CPU can do some kind of virtualization, even the G4 380 I had could run 20vms
almost. i5 2500k from 2011 or so. The last one that didn't have full support for it I think
I can't take any common i processor serious anymore
quite viable still
At least those who have been sold a lot and not too new
@orchid rose will still work fine for virtualization
Virtualbox or whatever I tried, cried about it
Try vmware
It will complain probably, if you haven't enabled intel-vt in the bios
But will definitely run vms
And run a proper hypervisor, esxi 😛
it ran the android vm I tried, but slowly (and cried about it too). Maybe I haven't enabled it in bios though
it lacks support for VT-d though
(whatever that is)
okay
I don't really have any use for it right now, but I'll try and remember to check when I reboot next time
Intel has supported vt since 2005 according to that
HA runs fine on Windows 😉
🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢
using IIS as well
😂
So funny that my ali order arrived within 4 days
and will arrive only in september
even if its in the country
How hard it is to move from. Mware setup to real?
can i copy my stuff
like configuration.yaml and etc
should work with just copy-paste
Hello
Oy
sounds good
as a lot of people bragged about how hard it is to move
and i was wondering
because technically the whole thing is in a few files
the first thing was the custom component today
which needed to put some folders into another ones
@boreal pewter how are you m8?
HA is hard if you don't understand the basic concepts of computers and you're not willing to learn them. I know plenty of people I would not recommend HA to 😄
Moving ha is done in less than 10 minutes normally
sounds good
🤢
just came across these on amazon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MV1RTSV?pf_rd_p=183f5289-9dc0-416f-942e-e8f213ef368b&pf_rd_r=CRPD2GHFNAFMDZ5NX06S

Probably tuya based @clear mirage
@clear ferry most lilkely, i have similar ones by Kuled that i was able to flash with tasmota and they work pretty well. But not a bad deal though $45 for a 4-pack
If they only were EU type 😛
lol.
wonder if I should buy something like this:

or a Raspberry Pi4 4 Gig memory
Containers for life
Vms are for infrastructure nerds who like to burn capital, memory and power :D
😄
@clear ferry
guys, what if I buy an external ssd now install linux on it with HA on my PC
and when Pi/mini pc arrives i just plug the external ssd in
it wont work right? as the components change
@past idol If it was such easy, everyone would have don it 😄 Sadly, OSes are still huge dependant of the hardware and making those kind of pre-installation is still not so easy to do
@midnight adder vacation mood with some salt and pepper, or rather when not working at work with servers I work at home with servers
@boreal pewter Sounds good 😄
@past elm maybe you are right 😄
i figured it out
i will use my old laptop
however I do not have a micro sd reader or anything
therefor i will use my old phone to put in the micro sd plug it to the laptop and install linux / ha on it 😄
master plan 😄
@boreal pewter 😄 using VMWare currently and there is still 2 weeks until I get my hands on Zigbeemqqt dongle and raspberry pi4 or some mini pc
and i want something i can run whole day
I cannot do it with my pc
a laptop consumes less power dho
Yeah, having an old laptop implies for me at least that it at least has a HDD. And even a 2,5" 5900RPM 64MB Cache HDD is better than attaching somehow a SD card to it IMO
Even better...
so i needed to create a new partition
and i also fear for data loss
this ssd is full of important files
yet I have not managed to backup them
How can you fear data loss using proper HA-backup strategies?
you mean?
currently they are out of raspberry pi here sadly 😄
cannot get ahold of one
Well you usually would want to have all data on a seperate huge HDD/server/device, having the most important things on 2 more USB things and have another decentral paid backup server like Backblaze
That would at least be the standard
For me it's a 8TB HDD for 139 bucks and backblaze, as well as private Git repos and USB sticks
I am planning this for quite a while
also want a private NAS to backup things
yet there were more important things
or maybe i just do not know how important is this until i gets lost
it*
With NAS, the cheapest option to use backblaze would probably not be possible. So calculate some more bucks per month for that one
I never heard of backblaze, though not sure I trust it
I do not really trust my data on cloud services, like google drive, one drive, icloud etc
not like that i have so many things to hide, yet the idea that strangers go through my things feels yuck
In that case money isn't an issue for you then, because dedicated storage boxes aka server itself cost a lot more than those options 😄
ah
And even then the hoster will most likely still have backdoors, as well as hardware issues which can quickly lead to data loss
Or you could encrypt everything you upload to the cloud
Yep
but i thought i will build a nas with raid drives and backup to those
and put my few important stuff on an external hard drive or something
it is not that expensive I think
depends on size of NAS array
yeah maybe but around 5 TB is more then enough for me now I think
I've got around 1 TB data right now that I need to backup
thats what I said when I built a 10 TB array
😄
64% full
one cannot have enough storage space, ever
At work we once argued about backup strategies. There is one simple thing. What happens if your house burns down? And I think that's all said.
I will burn with my nas
nas is small enoufh to carry
It doesn't need to happen when you're home...
home assistant warns me if there is a fire, home assistant notifies my muscular neighbor who kicks down the door gets ahold of the nas and escort it to safety
its all planned 😉
You simply can't argue against decentral backups 😄
Or anyone that cares about their data
right now I have only 500 gb ssd in my pc 😄
and it is full with skyrim mods and vmware linuxes 😄
ah yes... pet linuxes in cages
@past idol you want a Pi?
not sure about that
My PC has 2x 500GB NVME with 3GB/s and a 750GB SATA3 SSD, I have some external HDD and SSD as well as USB sticks, an external 8TB HDD as central backup drive to backup to Backblaze + a copy of the whole PC itself, another 500GB NVME with 1,5GB/s in the Deskmini, an old 250GB SSD in my not used old Gaming Laptop with an i7, 1TB NVME SSD in my Macbook Pro
will see. Pi 4 with 4 gigs of ram seems quite appealing to me
jeez
my eyes dried out of these GB datas
I will post you a few gigs of data if its fine
lol
I still have my dedicated server from a hoster with 8TB HDD which still carry all my Torrents and Media. I host no Media locally!
I wanted to ask Jazz but he is almost full you see 😄
I still think about a 4 bay case for 3;5" to fill with 8TB HDD's and use my Deskmini as the main server then but idk
hmm
i am kind of sick of HDD's
struggled with WD Black for years
it was loud, slow, loud, and then it died
decided that I would never buy a hdd again for normal PC use
Well if you Torrent 4k movies where each has like up to 80GB as well as 300GB series packs then you have to be millionair
Hard drives are good for data backup if you have them in a raid array. In a workstation they are quite painful to use
I just installed a couple SSDs in my home computer, but my work computer still has a hard drive. It is one of the reasons I don't like coming to work.
I have ssds in every machine I have
And we sell 95% ssds to customers 😂
32TB ssds, only $100.000 each, let's order 200 of those
Anybody tried mechanical turk?
Never even heard of before, had to Google it 😂
We have something similar in Norway called Finn Småjobber
Oh, we don't anymore 😛
Looks like you have intensively used it

@clear ferry 😄
I see thanks. Looking for a way to earn some side money to get the Pi, that how i came across the mechanical turk
Prostitution?
@boreal pewter is that still a things? 😄
@boreal pewter just kiddin, never tried though
You could try Patreon or something
depends on the purpose though, with a specific goal and mindset it could work
do you guys prefer an OS with a gui?
No.
HP-UX with CDE is the real stuff @boreal pewter
by the way which linux distribution are you guys using?
Slackware from 97-03, Debian ever since
The options are pretty small, CentOS or Debian
It's just up to what you prefer then
why
I should use suse more since I am suse certified though 😂
Ubuntu is an option aint it?
No
hmm
Ubuntu 🤢
Ubuntu is just the retarded child of Debian used by every noob following online tutorials
haha
i am fine with debian though
@unkempt umbra wonder what Jazz uses 😄
probably Saxophone OS
I have a guess, let's see if that comes true
I run mac os on my daily driver, am a user of red hat, kali linux
Hey there, I have a quick question about google assistant and home assistant (I'm asking here because I'm not sure that would fit in #330944238910963714 ), I've seen multiple people using HA with GA to control their house (like to light up hue bulbs for example) because it's faster and doesn't need to make the roundtrip request to the google servers.
Is that the case ? I mean, is there a way to setup google homes so their request first goes to the local HA (and if it can't handle the request, gets sent to the google servers) ?
My Macbook Pro is just a control machine for work where I work with iTerm2 and Shuttle App as well as Browser, Editor and Mails
oh, my laptop is a dell Lattitude.. but it runs MacOS
lul
I am a tinkerer by nature.
Tinkerer is away for 18h 17m 28s with a message :point_right: 🚀 to the 🌛

by the way Tinkerer still fingers the rocket to the moon for 18hours
oh, co-worker suggested "Siri Google Alexa fight mode"
so now I need to code up something dramatic to startrek fight music...
😄
would wow my granddaughter...
oh good that you've mentioned
i need some voice assistant
as I always yelling from the other part of the room to siri
I have Alexa, google home, and of course siri
"hey siriiii turn on the lights" " I am Listening" " i said turn on the lights" " okay, playing come on baby light my fire" 😄
apple watch to solve that
by the Doors 😄
yeah maybe I will get one as a christmas gift
just until now I could not justify to get one
without any proper field of use
got my home mini for $11 on ebay, new in box
Really? The echo dot v3 was now twice on deal for 20 bucks
I got the home to use for my grandfather clock automation.
couldn't get alexa media to work, yet
@boreal pewter that is nice, it is around 40+ usd now
home mini is around the same price
have 2 dots, that I spent about $5 each on.
I chase deals, and get amazon gift cards for doing surveys and such
can you think of any good mini pc that appears regularly on ebay or somewhere
and the price tend to be good?
I am looking for something around 100 usd
hmm.
thinking of a new Raspberry pi 4 with 4 gigs of ram
yet, maybe you have a better alternative in your mind
that's sweet... but my laptop came from ebay for about $100.
replaced screen, and battery
for about 30 more
If you're really just interested in HASS and don't tend to become a SysAdmin and build a concert of Services a Pi should be enough
And the Pi4 isn't too weak also, if you can live to rely on ARM
my HA solution is a docker container on my NAS of many things
NAS runs my channels DVR container, which hosts my OTA and CaTV dvr

The new T2 chip ll get you into troubles in the future @unkempt umbra

(with the Dell Lattitude)
In 2019, there is a lot of information available on Apple's design practices, how they deal with lemons, and the longevity of their products. If you still ch...
same price on ebay as I see
plus i need a case an adapter, an ssd
@unkempt umbra how familiar are you with VMware ?
what do you think of this guys?
moderately.. before nas, had esxi host.
lol no
but if I invest in something better
No no no
can I create other stuff with it
lol Anon why not? The thing you linked also uses 2400 g aint it? 😄
explain to me please
The mainboard + case + USP costs MUCH more than a Deskmini A300 which has that already built in. For cost efficiency use it. Now you would NOT take a 2400g because the 3400g has MUCh more power regarding almost no more cost. And very important, for Ryzen you take at least 3000Mhz CL16 RAM
I am a big fan of the PI.. just gave 3 to my son in law
AMD🤢
And yeah I use a 140 bucks 3400g ordered in the first week of release
And that one even punishes an i7 6700 😉
Skylake Platinum or bust
could you link a deskmini?
Depending on the benchmark it may vary up to 10%. But that's always the case. However this is a.. I think officially 170$ CPU vs a 300+$ CPU? While they're both almost the same level
and it is how much of an overkill ...
so the basic deskmini a300 is without a processor right?
and without anything
is it just a case and a psu?
and a mb
Yeah, you need CPU, cooler, RAM and SSD. That's it. That made me an overall of 450€
Regarding I choose 16GB 3000Mhz CL16 RAM and 500GB NVME SSD
It's still to consider, 130€ in my case for case + motherboard + psu
I see
And if I go to extend it for storage as said, I would simply choose a 4 bay USB 3.1 case and fill with HDD's

Used parts = old generation parts = less power and efficient
- no guarantee
But indeed, check out serverbuilds.net
There are builds for currently suggested 1155 socket, used
Just buy a Superdome Flex while you are at it, plenty of performance and room to grow
You're noob if you don't have an IBM Mainframe at home right @clear ferry
I prefer x86 over propiatary z systems 😛
@clear ferry looks promising 😊
yeah but for HA I do not really need power @boreal pewter
so i am looking for alternative usages
should I use it as a back up device also?
As I said JUST for HASS a Pi is enough
I mean buying a 300-400 eur pc just for ha is overkill 😄
yeah I know
yet on the long run it could be better
i mean i could easily upgrade it
it is good for other stuff too apart from running HA
just thinking about my options
I wouldn't pay 80$ for a Pi tho, we had it in germany on deal last week for 40€ with shipping
Usually things ain't worth more for me than the cheapest price ever available
for real? which one?
The 4 4GB
oh my 😄
and where? could not I order these from outside germany somehow?
i mean it is half the price 😄
Probably but they were on deal for only one day or so, long off
poor Wild guy should have been in Germany
😄
I think even he could get that for 40 usd 😄
I get those deals from a huge well known german page (the actually only one tho) so there're easily 100k orders
We often even take down pages by accident 😄
Haha
and what if i purchase a nas?
like a synology ds 218+
i bet it could manage HA and also create a backup
Do you think is qnap better regarding the prices?
don't know.. but I like my qnap
hmm let me look:
upgraded to 8 GB, and 4 4TB drives
you need it to run docker...
not sure which nas boxes are docker capable.
@boreal pewter the DeskMini looks Awesome - you got HA running on one of this fellas?
I run it since yesterday on it, I built it together 2 days ago. And today I solved all errors regarding ADB, MQTT and Deconz
you know the feeling under the fingers...
450€ with fast and fair amount of RAM and NVME SSD
I maybe still extend the storage inside and external
a seccond network card would be awesome - dreaming bout pfsense 😛
hello :)
New here, and i jumped immediately in the channel i was interested in ... how rude of me.
So hi :) I'm new to HA, but i have played with other stuff before.
i'm a sysadmin so i may be able to help you if you don't just run a docker image :)
Welcome to the asylum 👋
a good one ? or a bad one ? :D
Tinkerer is a good guy if you pet him sometimes
nha i mean what kind of asylum XD
Well...
Depends on which side of the wall you're on 😛
It's a money and time sink for sure
And many days it'll test your sanity
already run out of both, and i never heard of this sanity you speak about :'D
Well, if you're a sysadmin you have to be crazy
i'm a home-lab guy ... so yea the smarthome device budget is a bit short but i already have what i need for quite some time
hey !
not fair
I'm an ex sysadmin - I know what I'm talking about 😛
but it's true... former sysadmin here
ex, former ? did you both run out to live in the wild ? or downgrade to manage human instead of server ?
If you're not crazy at the start, after a few years of zombies (whether end users, management, or supposed co-workers) you'll be crazy soon enough 😉
I do service desk now, on contract
Oh no, I moved on and out - being "just" a system admin was boring, so I added databases, networks, and things, then moved to contracting "and stuff"
oh i see :)
If it has a network interface, I've probably fixed it or helped somebody fix it at some point
TCP/IP is purely optional 😉
but have you strung cable with a crossbow ?
sadly i'm kinda young, and abstraction in network is everywhere ... so i never did get my classic :(
You'll get plenty of opportunity to dig into the dark corners if you're interested
Indeed, I'd suggest that being interested in the edges of your knowledge is the only way to go, else you end up in the same job for decades, and hating it
amen tinkerer
Aka, if you're not learning, you're falling behind
in IT, that for sure
In life
yes
Anybody I know who's approached any job as I know enough ends up in a dead end
those hours you wrap around work
Took me too long to get the work/life balance right - but I know enough who never have
well for now i'm 90% work 5% sleep 5% lunch ... speaking of which i'm beeing called upon ... i'll be back 👋
And 100% burn out material 😉
yeah
I've seen too many IT types burn out andgo do anything else.. ever know a couple who farm goats now.
An ex-boss of mine ended up with a nervous breakdown - and never went back to work. I know others who've had heart attacks or strokes through the stress, and not all of them survived.
Folks don't take their own health seriously enough (says the overweight person)
I told my boss 12 years ago I'm a sponge, if I'm not challenged and learning something new I'll quit
I'm still there 😛
Yup. I need to be "having fun" to stay
For me that means learning, flexibility, and making a difference
Finally had to shutdown the monitor script. It just wasn't worth my wifi devices losing connection 1400 times a day. Wifi + GPS tracking for me 😦
5 GHz for life 😉
As soon as 5ghz IoT devices go mainstream I might revisit it
Just move already @unreal orbit😛
but we just hit our first year in this house 😦
back ! wow, quite the talk, i don't want to end up at the bottom of a rope ... but there is so much to do that i don't have time to do anything else right now 🤔
There's always time - it's a matter of prioritisation
If you're having to work more than 8 hours at your job (excluding lunch) then either:
- You have too much to do
- There aren't enough staff - see (1)
- You don't have the skills needed yet - see (1)
- Your management are idiots - see (1)
Experience (and automation) allows you to get more done in less time, but it's also partly mindset.
i'm under 8H, because in my country we have what's call 35h a week ... so with the extra i'm around 7.5H
Good
what is killing is transport ...
Yeah...
I know too many folks who have to balance can afford to live here with can afford the commute - and it often results in a stupid commute
I think the record is about 3.5 hours, each way
That's about 2.5 hours above my personal maximum 😄
I can, but I see no reason to
i'm still "young", so i go where i'm accepted. i start very early to avoid traffic and do what i can `:)
Just keep learning, and do put effort on the soft skills - that'll make a massive difference long term
Yes
Communications, inter-personal skills, all that
It makes a significant difference to how people see you, how you come across in interviews, promotion, etc
i saw that a bit, so i do my best to "look" the way i should, but i do fall flat when i'm asked about hobbies "outside of tech"
Tech hobbies are fine too - it's about showing you're not just about work
can i ask from what country you'r from ?
UK
Thank :) France here but you knew that i'm sure XD
are raise and promotion mostly "capacity based" in the UK ?
or do you need to change company to really get a promotion
Depends on the organisation really
Sometimes you have to move, sometimes you'll get promoted internally
I think the reality is that for many folks you need to move sometimes just to get a fresh start
Avoid any pre-conceptions of the current employer, and give yourself new opportunities
I see, from what i have understand (cause i can't talk much about experience) here company see you as a purchase, so they rather see you leave and try to get you back later for way more, that give you a raise
so i try to learn all i can to ... "sell myself" beter :)
Yup, and that's where the communication skills, and how you come across (including body language) makes a huge difference
I enjoy travelling, I can drive 6h to get to customers 😛
It's also partly about how you talk about things
I was part of a team that...
I was a critical part of a team that...
I lead a team...
All three could be the same thing, but they position you differently in interview 😉
i guess beeing a sale's man can be really cool taxbyea :)
hey everybody, since I run HA i can not think about my apartment without. Yesterday a water pipe broke in front of my apartment on the road and a team of workers were there to fix. They closed the water for the whole building. Scared that some weird shit would happen to the electricity, I shat down the server.
I was a full day without HA. Man.. I did miss it.
Sales... I "suspect" he's not really that 😉
i have no idea, i read customers. drive, long time
Roving tech support
oh .... seam less fun sudenly
I dunno
Turn up, kick the machine in the right spot, make everybody else feel dumb, leave with a grin
yeaaa, issus are very simple most of the time. but when they arent, it look more stressful since your only job here is to fix that stuff...
Oh, I agree, but experience, and learning how to solve problems, can turn that into fun
i wonder if a kick on the user in the right spot also solve issue 🤔 😀
For every WTF am I still employed moment I've had dozens of opportunities to pull rabbits from a hat
And yes, yes it can 😛
XD
Eh. It could be worse... politics could be banned in this channel 😉
ouch 🔥
But there is noone called @politics
it actually canceled my holiday :( i was planing to come a week, but it was just after the date the new guy they you will leave with or without, and i didn't want to risk it...
so much cool museum i won't see :(
@fiery sorrel I am not a sales man no
I am a fixer of important stuff, installer of awesome and implementer of cool solutions
And a cocky fat bastard
that quite the job description !
ok ... not the last part
but still pretty cool :D
The secret of job descriptions is that they're flexible
I'm not very flexible, thank Dog my job is
soo quiet...
:'D
poor table :P
┬─┬ ノ( ゜-゜ノ)
XD
¯_(ツ)_/¯
i'm so close to sleeping on my desk :(
im looking at the under desk space
a quieter spot.
jealous
ascii owl.
yay, my thing trigerd ! now i'm going in bed ... it have been a long 20H day
g'night Vlycop
@unkempt umbra i know ... that why i askd "who?", 'cause that what owl say
damn, my joke are so low level :(
heheheh
thank's :) have a good end of work :)
anyone had luck with leviton smart switches and led strips? leviton's site doesn't really explicitly say led strips supported
Just spent $300 on baby gates and accessories
Sigh
That could have been 15 xiaomi sensors! Damn kids haha
I have bought a lot of baby stuff used 😛
I know but i needed like 4 gates
Yeah, I bought one gate, it came partly broke, got my money back, but kept the gate, bought a second gate on 50% off 😛
I figured it would save me about $25 per gate to buy it second hand
But then I would have to hunt to find four different people with the exact lengths I need, drive around the city, to get half broken gates with hardware missing
We had our third earlier this year. We always try to get used baby hardware. Just need to throw an esp with relay controlling electro mag locks and sensors on the baby gates 😆
Lool 😂
What are the plus of using node red rather than just HA ?
Well, that's off topic in here 😉 Try #node-red-archived or #330944238910963714
Ho didnt saw this chan
Or take the time to read the channel topics... 😉
Channel names are enough already 😄
I see no channel topics
Then repair your Discord.
On mobile you have to click the channel name to see the topic
Yes, I'll fix my discord
Just let me work for Discord and change their source code
You're good if you change the sourcecode while not working for them. :P
Maybe you can just do a self-host Discord btw?
Still can't find the topics anywere on android
Haven't really gone looking for them though
On mobile you have to click the channel name to see the topic
They're there on Android - that's what I just used to verify that what I saw earlier is still true half an hour later 😛
I just tested and indeed, I can't see them either
🤔 I wonder if it's because all the servers I'm active on I'm also a mod/admin/whatever... must check one of the ones I don't use much
Could have been moved with a lately update or so
Yeah it's cause you're admin
Would appear to be the case
have someone enable browser notification on the forum ? how bad or how good is it ? i usually instant nop ... but this community don't seam "abusive".
I can't say, but you might be able to check what they're set to in your profile settings
It might say "notify on reply to your topic, direct message etc"
I assume it would be for those sort of things
me to, but because it's based on a forum engine, i'm kinda worry about what other notif the engine might set by default :)
true :)

Got enough music now @ocean mirage ?
Honestly I’ve left your email open in a tab since you sent it
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
Getting around to things is not my strong suit but it’ll happen
I sent you a few more
Oh cool, I don’t check that email too often
Only for porn and atxbyea?
Yeah and only atxbyea because I am hoping you will send me porn
Basically the same thing though
I am quite hot
As in I never wear a jacket in winter
Hehe
I hate when everything's working... you change nothing, and then it breaks. 😩
Weeks ago I moved my db and log files to thumbdrive... and now Im getting errors about stuff being locked. I haven't touched anything
...and then it fixes itself magically.
Hi all!
I'm trying to setup the Home Assistant extension in Visual Studio Code and I keep getting errors. Anybody had luck with this ?
Try #general-archived - you're off topic in here (see the channel topic 😉 )
ok thanks 🙂
built an unraid box last week to replace 2 aging NAS systems 🎉
I've been enjoying using Unraid
but keep it on the DL, I suspect it it something that atxbyea would badmouth
Freenas 4 lyfe suckers 😛
Hey y'all
how ya doing
I'm having a bit of a bad week myself. My grandfather passed away on Thursday
so sorry @valid halo prayers for you and family
Thank you.
🙏
He was getting into home automation a little bit himself. He had three Alexa's and a Ring.
Heh. We all had the same idea to buy him an Alexa. So he got two echos and an echo dot
He really liked them. He'd wake up and have them play music or just ask Alexa questions.
well he has God to ask questions too ...so much much much better
Divine automation
yes sir ...i understand we should keep religion out of this but i wont carry on ....but it is what it is ....just look at my avatar
I would expect no less of Vasiley the great ❤
is it any ways to measure rssi of wifi units and show it in ha?
Not that it's on topic here, but the component would need to report that
Lol the Google home max is not avaliable in Norway, but a gray import shop is selling it for $590
