I have this light switch.

Switch 1 connected to 4 Wyze Bulbs
Switch 2 connected to 1 Hue light Blub
Switch 3 connected to lights under cabinets

I wanted to able to google assistant to turn off all 3 switch and also wife wants to be able to turn manually ? is this even possible?

late gate
#

first straighten up the screws my OCD is tingling secondly what technology is the switches?

dusty gorge
#

LOL

#

so true tho

#

house was built 19 years ago?

#

@late gate do you need to pull cover off?

late gate
#

So old "dumb" switches?

dusty gorge
#

switches just turns on and off = dumb ?

#

any recommendation on how to accomplish this?

clever mortar
#

You'd need to connect them to a smart relay

late gate
#

ok moved mqtt and influx to the server - would you guys move nodered (if you are using it) off hass too?

clever mortar
#

Check the remaining load on the Pi, see what it's like (particularly I/O)

late gate
#

actually on a NUC, but thinking of crash preperance

clever mortar
#

Well, backups would be the important thing there IMO

#

And possibly having a "cold standby" system, or even a warm standby that you're keeping in sync, but not running any services

torn horizon
#

Is it useful to install a mqtt server on the rpi hosting HA ?

#

I don't get the benefits of it

clever mortar
#

Yes, if you're using MQTT

#

Obviously it's not very useful if you don't 😉

torn horizon
#

Isn't the point of MQTT to offload http events on HA and avoid potentil events missing ?

#

Thing is i wonder to move over mqtt but I don't really get the benefit of it

static schooner
#

In this case, an MQTT broker is just a middleman between something that’s providing data or that you want to control and your HA instance.

#

It can help locate a Zwave or Zigbee controller on a different physical device, or just have it run as a stand-alone instance and remain connected to HA via the MQTT server.

#

That could reduce the load on your HA device, but it’s not usually the reason to do it, and it probably wouldn’t help with ‘missing events’. That’s gonna be something else

#

The value of MQTT is that it’s a simple, standard abstraction that can be used to communicate between two devices, providing a common language

#

One benefit for Zwave is that Zwave2MQTT avoids the need to requery your devices when restarting HA. It also has some downsides in that it’s still relatively immature.

#

Investigate MQTT if you have an actual problem to solve or need it to work with a device or service that doesn’t work natively with HA. Otherwise, no reason to do it just to do it

dusty gorge
#

Ok I have spent some time trying to figure this out. I want to replace my light switch(3 switches on wall light plate) that wil work with my Hue and Wzye light bulbs. I am using conbee2. I cant seem to find a good zigbee ligth switch off this list? https://github.com/dresden-elektronik/deconz-rest-plugin/wiki/Supported-Devices#supported-switches

#

will this work on US light boxes?

midnight adder
#

wee flashing tuya

unreal orbit
#

@dusty gorge input voltage is 220, so no

green inlet
#

Putting a smart switch inline with another smart device is a recipe for disaster IMHO

midnight adder
#

anyone else here ever use tuya-convert

#

the flashing is taking forever

open hull
#

the device probably has patched firmware if it's taking so long

midnight adder
#

well, shit

#

guess I'll have to find some other compact smart plug that I can flash

deft reef
#

@midnight adder I have my house filled with tuya switches that I flashed (about 30 of them)

#

Sometimes it just will sit there and never flash

#

It was common to have to restart the process a couple times on some switches before it would "take"

#

However, if they are updated to the new firmware it'll never work. But you can tell which is which by watching the switch. If it keeps blinking steadily during the flash process, it isn't working. So after a couple tries if it always does that, it's probably updated and won't work

#

But sometimes it'll blink differently but not fully flash (but the process on the PC still just shows dots forever), it'll work but you have to restart the process again

#

In my experience

#

Has anyone used groups of persons? I'd like to setup some automations for when someone is home and also when we're all gone but I'd rather use a group than reference every person in the automations. Is that easy to setup?

Why don't you recommend buying one anon?

late gate
#

what do you guys prefer on windows. 1. open/close sensor or 2. vibration sensor with gyroscope

clever mortar
#

Depends on the window I suppose, but open/close is simple and reliable

#

Gyro may be handy if it tilts though and can give you the angle

late gate
#

yeah I kinda found the old open/close to be hard to install on windows, while gyro I know if its open from top or side, and can trigger on vibration / breaking glass

clever mortar
#

On uPVC I've had zero issues with any open/close - the "closed" range is usually one or two cm

late gate
#

yeah I got windows from the 70s so awkward relationship between window and frame

clever mortar
#

Depending on the construction and gaps, the Sensative strips may work

#

I've got a few of their Z-Wave door/window strips and they're awesome - though an absolute PITA to pair 😄

late gate
#

I will take a look

#

On another note, does it exist some kindd of trigger to be put behind old light switches to indirectly control lights like hue ceiling lights (so the switch works as a remote). The fibaro dimmer needs to be connected to the target, and in general what I want is just a power connected remote

clever mortar
#

Well, you need something connected to the target so you can power it off. However, most Z-Wave modules have two outputs and two inputs. You can hook the physical switch to the input that's not connected to the light, and then control it with an automation

late gate
#

hmm depends if the zwave ones wants to register button clicks if not connected to target?

clever mortar
#

They will, they're designed to work that way

late gate
#

hmm okay got a load of fibaro dimmer 2, maybe they could work as a dumb remote for automations

#

yeah seem like possible with using the bypass module - luckily I got a load of them too

#

Im done trying to get the HUE remote to work, it drops off the network every 2 days

clever mortar
#

As I said, you'll want to hook the second output to the light so you can still cut the power

late gate
#

ah yeah you are right, so that the switch wont turn that off

#

I will take a look later. Got some fibaro walli and old dimmer2 just laying in the drawer

midnight adder
#

@deft reef start_flash, connect to wifi with phone, plug in smartplug and set it to pairing mode, hit enter

#

right?

tame moss
#

How does the wyze bulbs communicate?

#

Pretty decent cheap bulb for the price but no HA support

#

@late gate how far away is your hue hub from your remote

#

Zigbee/hue works kinda like mesh, so if a hue bulb is in the vacinity it will piggy back off that to extend the range

late gate
#

@tame moss about 5-6 meters, with a hue light close. It does not seem like HUE is meshing properly - wish I could see a map of it as some of the outside lights are always jumping between connected and disconnected, even if all lights are 2-3 meters apart (20 outside lights)

#

the remotes are extremly unstable in this house at least

tame moss
#

Hm, weird. My hue does sometimes drop out as well.

#

I'm personally using lutron caseta picos to control my lights and media

#

Dirt cheap remotes, like $15?

late gate
#

US? at least the american marked is blessed with a good selection of remotes and switches. European switches are extremely limited

tame moss
#

Yeah this is us. But I believe lutron sells them in eu

#

They work off a special rf technology, and you need a lutron caseta hub for it (and the lutron caseta pro hub for ha support)

late gate
#

not sure if they use a frequency thats banned here, but its an option. Though problem is US switches look nothing like EU switches (we dont have any narrow and high) so looks a bit strange

#

for hue I had to make a custom frame to make it fit

tame moss
#

Yeah that's the issue.

#

The picos are just standalone wireless remotes but they sell an adapter that mounts them to a wall like a normal switch. The adapters like $2.

late gate
#

how is the stability?

tame moss
#

VERY good.

#

There's a size comparasion. Should be super easy to make a custom frame.

#

They have (for me at least) 100% reliability with home assistant and they claim a 10 year battery life span, which I believe as my friend has been using them for the past 4 years.

late gate
#

interessting. need to do research about the frequency unless someone in EU know if they use a banned one here?

#

at least would not reccomend hue dimmers to anyone. a google search show it seem like a common issue

tame moss
late gate
#

could be an issue though 431mhz is right in the amataur radio frequency - I bet they are not allowed to use for smarthome equipment

#

Not sure where to put this in at, it's more Home Automation than HA, but I have a problem that I'm looking to solve. I have an office with a Wyze PIR Sense. I have the PIR sensor pointing right at my body under my monitor. I use this to turn on the lights when I enter the room and sit at my computer. For some reason, the Wyze PIR sensor will turn off the lights and declare the sensor is clear. I thought that it was too close and when the PIR normalized it was considered under average. I then moved it about 3 feet away from me thinking it was an averaging issue, but it still happens.

  • My conclusion is that the sensitivity is off (which I can't change)
  • The sensor is junk
  • I'm still too close to the sensor
  • Everything is good, but I need more sensors to get an better room average

Any thoughts?

clear ferry
#

I use a Xiaomi sensor in my office, above the screens so it sees me and the door

#

Two times it has turned off the lights, both times I was in a conference call, half asleep 😂

clear ferry
#

ZigBee doesn't do power metering, does it?

#

So zwave or WiFi are probably your options

late gate
#

yeah. I have no experience with wifi plugs, except they seem much cheaper

clever mortar
#

Because they don't have to support any standard

#

16A for a socket though... seems unlikely

#

Might be worth checking out TKB, they do a Z-Wave plug for Germany that supports up to 3.5KW

I'm doing 2-3 days leave every week for a whole year

#

#

and the kid starts kindergarden at 1y2m too, so no need for me to be home

#

I heard in the US you can pay like $2000 a month for kindergarden shock

If you don't want to go to public school, then yeah

strange vapor
hushed basalt
#

@strange vapor don't forget disposable time as well

#

Time is what I am poor in right now

strange vapor
#

I'm happily without kids, and still time poor! Need to kill off some projects which will never get finished!

hushed basalt
#

Shoot them in the head

#

Time box things

#

If they take over a certain amount of time per task it's probably a bad project or the wrong approach

#

Don't look at all these devices on my desk still in their packaging

strange vapor
#

In a few cases, I've just outsourced them. Cost more, but meh! At least they get done properly then.

hushed basalt
#

Do as I say not as I do

#

I still have 5 bulbs to flash and program.

#

Plus an IKEA gateway to setup

#

Plus snapshot.jpgs from baby monitor to wifes watch on noise trigger

#

Plus interfacing alarm PIRs to a nodemcu

strange vapor
#

And that's just the HA related projects.

#

Do you have life outside HA? 😄

hushed basalt
#

I am self studying, work full time and have a six month old

#

So no

#

But my one piece of advice is

#

Build simple, build up, build fast

strange vapor
#

Not "Wear Sunscreen"???

hushed basalt
#

It's better to rough a project through from beginning to end and then improve

#

Than to try and do stage one awesome and not deliver value

clear ferry
strange vapor
#

If I was to start from scratch on most of the infrastructure I've built up over the years, I'd just collapse in fright. Lots of small projects which gradually worked together in the way I want, but which have taken years to actually build.

#

Saying that, I've been careful to automate where possible. So, for example, when my primary Mail and DNS server went bang a few months back, I was able to slot in new hardware, run ansible against it, restore MailDirs and DNS from backups, and get on with life!

#

Only annoying part was that it borked when I was out of the country. Proper Backup MX was a life saver 😄

midnight adder
boreal pewter
#

So my Deskmini is built, except for the RAM

boreal pewter
#

Honestly that small Noctua cooler weights like 500g

#

haha 467g, nice guess

orchid rose
#

weight is an important factor in cooling ofc. So much so that it was common knowledge that heavy amplifiers are going to be much better than cheap light ones. So nowadays the high end manufacturers sometimes just add lead weights in to the devices

boreal pewter
#

I also think that the connector plate of the pipes to the cpu is pretty massive, often like 1-2cm thick and massive, so it weights the most

#

However the cooler is still the best one for a Deskmini and you still can change to a bigger fan

orchid rose
#

I'm still rocking with a full ATX tower with some massive cooler for my now 8 year-old cpu...

Sooner the better! Might mean less changelogs like:

    timestamps:
    - Palestine will not start DST until 2019-03-30, instead of 2019-03-23

dark swallow
#

I have a love/hate relationship with Lutron's Caseta. I love how well it works and how natural the switches look while still making them smart. But the limitations they put on their systems are so arbitrary! They used to limit you to 50 devices and now have magically upgraded it to 75! And they probably treat it like they made some break through in the software when really they just raised their artificial limit designed to make you pay for a more expensive system

unreal orbit
#

🤷 it costs money to host a service, limiting devices is one way of cutting costs

#

Also that seems to be them advertising that there are literally more devices you can buy that are compatible with their system

shy comet
#

isnt lutron locally controlled though?

unreal orbit
#

I assume they also have a cloud service for remotely controlling devices

dark swallow
#

Yeah well they used to limit you to 50 devices per hub

#

and now i think's 75 per hub

#

and i get the cost of maintaining the remote access stuff

#

but really they limit caseta because they want you to purchase their RadioRa system which is crazy expensive

#

or the just slightly cheaper radiora select

unreal orbit
#

Hub limits are usually hardware based. I doubt they just changed that with an update. If they did then I agree that's BS

dark swallow
#

Yeah that's what I thought too but they already increased to 50 from something lower I think like 35

#

so not quite hardware based!

unreal orbit
#

Still could be hardware limitations that they have optimized with software updates (such as decreasing the memory that each device uses), but I won't rule out them just doing things that corporations do

dark swallow
#

maybe but how their marketing and product strategy looks I doubt it

#

they also have a normal hub and a "Pro" hub the only difference is the pro one also has support for telnet interface which allows it to work with HA

#

and this "pro" hub is not sold at stores and can only be bought by people like electrical contractors

#

My theory is that their more expensive RadioRa select isn't selling well but Caseta is so they are trying to keep up with competition like samsung smart things or philips hue because caseta is priced the same as those but radiora select is so much more for only a little bit more feature-wise

boreal pewter

leaden adder
#

somebody with an Synology NAS here that could try a curl call for me?

My NAS need seconds, something about 10 to reply to this simple login request:
curl -d "method=Login&account=hass&passwd=*****&format=cookie&api=SYNO.API.Auth&version=2&session=SurveillanceStation" -X POST http://192.168.178.2:5000/webapi/auth.cgi
Would be great to know if i'm alone with this problem

fickle tendon
#

@leaden adder I'm having trouble logging in with that (I don't have surveillance station, and things tend to be locked down security wise), but the error response comes back in 2 seconds. Having said that, when my NAS' drives are spun down it easily takes 10+ seconds to even get the DSM login page as unfortunately it needs to spin up the drives for that. Seeing how you're using their web API I would not be surprised if it has the same limitation

#

@leaden adder just tried it on my second NAS and it probably took ~15 seconds for it to come back with a login failure, and it did spin up its drives. So likely that's the delay you're seeing

leaden adder
#

good to know, thank you. That script to detect wether my surveillance station is in home more or not worked wonderful with a 5 seconds timeout for months. And since a few weeks even a 15 seconds timeout is not reliable anymore 😦

fickle tendon

any chance your surveillance station stopped recording in that time? (drives full, can't connect to cameras etc.)

What is your opinion about this one ?

Not a router dho , separate question

boreal pewter

Honestly for a 100 bucks I wouldn't expect anything special

#

Even a full Pi4 costs 100 bucks lol

#

If you go higher, for like 450€ you get a Deskmini build

#

And from there on I would consider uATX/mini-ITX builds

#

(for higher performance tho)

midnight adder
#

100 usd for the router

boreal pewter
#

Unifi Security Gateway costs 100 😄

midnight adder
#

And for now i am fine with raspberry like performance

I just do not like the issues

That is why i want a mini pc

For my usage it should be more than fine for now

This one?

#

Ubiquiti UniFi USG Enterprise Security Gateway Router

boreal pewter
#

If it costs 100 then yes, there are just 2 versions. Second is "Pro" and should cost like 300

That is to consider if you think about rebuilding your WIFI to Unifi AP's in the long term

I plan so this is what comes in mind 😄

midnight adder
#

I see

Yes you are right

#

How this rebuild works

I can't answer that honestly. Yet I only used FritzBox Modem-Routers

boreal pewter

I have a FritzBox 7590 and I don't get any usable Wifi signal in the next room with just one wall

strange vapor
#

@boreal pewter I have a Fritzbox as well, but it's being used as a straight bridge to a little rackmount server doing PPPoE. Then using Unifi for the Wireless.

boreal pewter
#

I already found a way to degrade the FritzBox into Modem-Mode as soon as I get Unifi stuff 😛

#

Then will do it the same as u @strange vapor

strange vapor

The fritzbox became a lot more reliable after I disabled the Wifi and other "features" and turned it into a dumb bridge!

Can’t beat that Broadcom chipset in oz eh?

boreal pewter

Wifi really depends on everything that is around. Like I'm in germany and our houses are real houses, really thick walls with metal and everything in. Can't compare to american 20cm wannabe walls I can even kick through.
And in a big town with 20 neighbours in the house it is really just about who has the strongest wifi because they interfer with each other

#

I guess with Unifi my neighbours will love me

ocean mirage

Hahaha...... 20cm??? 10cm internals here lol

boreal pewter

So yeah a FB blasts through those

strange vapor

Front part of my house was built in the 30s, and the walls are about 3ft thick. Extension was built behind in the 80s, and the walls are only 2ft thick mass concrete :/

#

Previous owners went with proper overkill on the extension!

eager trench

I also have run Ethernet everywhere here anyway as I despise WiFi crept for iOT and phones etc...

So, there's a few Unifi APs dotted acount!

Nice. Can’t beat that

Hell, the house I grew up in was mostly built in the 20s. The way they did it back then was to put up wooden boards, drop all the rubble they could between the boards, and then pump in cement.

Replaced the Intel Nuc behind my TV with a Pi4 over the week. Happily playing 4K videos, and has freed up the NUC for other uses.

midnight adder
#

Sounds good

boreal pewter
#

4k movies without transcoding, yeah

eager trench
#

For the price of a celeron nuc i can get 2 pi 4’s

midnight adder
#

Wat is the price for a pi4

#

?

strange vapor
#

Yup, no transcoding.

boreal pewter
#

I would have offered to give away my Pi2 but I know it suddenly dies when it's inside about 30 degrees and it's pretty weak tho

midnight adder
#

Because I can purchase a basic nuc for around 120 usd

eager trench
#

With ram and ssd?

midnight adder
#

@boreal pewter ah, so kind of you

strange vapor
#

I think it was arount the €50 mark for the 4GB model, but you need to add the cost of the case, PSU and hdmi cable on top of that which brings it closer to the €80 mark

midnight adder
#

Nope, just the machone

#

Machine*

#

However you need an ssd for the pi too

boreal pewter
#

MicroSD

midnight adder
#

And ram is kinda cheap ( used 4 gig at least)

eager trench
#

Right so a full nuc is around double the price of a full pi

midnight adder
#

Not really

eager trench
#

Like a working one

midnight adder
#

I mean a pi is around 50 usd here

#

Without any case

#

Or any fancy stuff

#

So if you pgrade it a bit it is nearly the price of a nuc

#

However u are right pi still cheaper

eager trench
#

Pi+case+sd-card+power x 2 = nuc +ssd+RAM

midnight adder
#

Kind of yes

eager trench
#

Well apples and apples - you need those things for a real workable setup

midnight adder
#

is it overkill to use ssd

eager trench
#

Oh indeed... I meant SD

boreal pewter
#

So let's do @midnight adder Crowdfunding. I'm in with 5 bucks

midnight adder
#

@low stratusn no way sir, that would be too kind

#

Even if it sounds awesome

#

But I must say you are one of the nicest people around there on the internet. All this HA Discord group seems nice and helpful. I am glad that I am interested in this

boreal pewter
#

As said I'm not too sure if a Pi2b will make you happy in the long term. For HA it is called "experimental" and "not recommended"

eager trench
#

Read: nightmare

midnight adder
#

@boreal pewter you think anybody would ever support such a thing apart from you? I mean is there any rationale to it?

boreal pewter
#

Crowdfunding you mean?

#

Maybe here within the community a few

#

But noone agreed yet

midnight adder
#

I see

#

Appreciate your help though

hushed basalt
#

Pi is an ARM

#

No where near the real world performance of an AMD64

boreal pewter
#

I only have the 2b to offer :/

midnight adder
#

Pi is around 65 usd here so, 60 more to go, that is either 12 person per 5$ or 60 per 1$ ☺😄

#

Maybe I should dance in return or something

#

HELLO

hearty depot
#

DONT SCREAM AT ME - I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG!

midnight adder

#

I am just a mere puny human in this topic right know

#

However i am a happy one

#

So many kind people

boreal pewter
#

I have no idea, you either open a page on any crowdfunding platform or donation page via paypal or so 😛

#

Maybe anyone here is familiar with that

midnight adder
#

PayPal donation page seems good idea, I am not sure how crowdfunding platforms work but maybe they take a cut or something

#

Hmm, thank you I will check it out

boreal pewter
#

Yeah right there is a special paypal donation link from within paypal?

midnight adder
#

I am not sure

hearty depot
midnight adder
#

Thank you I will check it

midnight adder
#

Thank you if you help me with my project to fund me a Raspberry Pi.

I really appreciate your help, your kindness and any amount, even the smallest amount makes me happy.

Thank you for your contribution!

#

Is this working? @hearty depot @boreal pewter @midnight adder

late gate
#

Its so fun with wifi disturbance during day. Making smart home extremely difficult

marsh elbow
#

kind of interesting how that works psychologically

boreal pewter
#

100% fee? Really

#

ALternatively just provide your paypal Email and everyone needs to send manually via Family and Friends

marsh elbow
#

wouldn't hesitate to pitch in X HUF if receiver got most of it, but when I see that PayPal takes X/2 and receiver gets X/2, it's suddenly much less easy to go for it

midnight adder
#

I understand

#

hmm

#

maybe they are right

marsh elbow
#

just funny human brain at work

midnight adder
#

then could you please send me your email address?

#

U sure?

#

wait a minute i will check it out on the web

boreal pewter
#

Yeah Family and Friends is always free for all

#

Oh you did a Paypal.me pool. In settings you can just make a paypal.me profile and there is a setting to accept family and friends donation

midnight adder
#

ah

#

i see

#

it says on the web

#

if you use the Pool it takes a fee

#

depending on the amount

#

and also another one if you want to get your money out

#

so it is rather complicated

boreal pewter
#

It's in the settings

midnight adder
#

I am not sure about that but maybe he is right

#

I am not using PP too often

#

Okay

#

I will try to find it

#

I think i’ve found it

#

It says personal payments

#

Let your friend and family pay quickly. Its free for both of you...

boreal pewter
#

Yep

midnight adder
#

This one if I am right

#

Thank you @midnight adder @boreal pewter @marsh elbow @hearty depot

#

#

Wish*

#

I do not know if its work related but it is a good thing to travel

#

When I red Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness and facts about the author I always wondered how great could it be to travel around even if its work

#

People tend to go to the same place a lot however instead they should travel around to widen their perspective by learning from other cultures

strange vapor
#

Currently waiting on a second Pi4 to get delivered to the office 😄

hearty depot
#

good idea.. I still rather stick at home 🙄

midnight adder

It is better then visiting a place over and over again
