first straighten up the screws my OCD is tingling secondly what technology is the switches?
LOL
so true tho
house was built 19 years ago?
@late gate do you need to pull cover off?
So old "dumb" switches?
switches just turns on and off = dumb ?
any recommendation on how to accomplish this?
You'd need to connect them to a smart relay
That's really a #330944238910963714 question though 😉
ok moved mqtt and influx to the server - would you guys move nodered (if you are using it) off hass too?
Check the remaining load on the Pi, see what it's like (particularly I/O)
actually on a NUC, but thinking of crash preperance
Well, backups would be the important thing there IMO
And possibly having a "cold standby" system, or even a warm standby that you're keeping in sync, but not running any services
Is it useful to install a mqtt server on the rpi hosting HA ?
I don't get the benefits of it
Isn't the point of MQTT to offload http events on HA and avoid potentil events missing ?
Thing is i wonder to move over mqtt but I don't really get the benefit of it
In this case, an MQTT broker is just a middleman between something that’s providing data or that you want to control and your HA instance.
It can help locate a Zwave or Zigbee controller on a different physical device, or just have it run as a stand-alone instance and remain connected to HA via the MQTT server.
That could reduce the load on your HA device, but it’s not usually the reason to do it, and it probably wouldn’t help with ‘missing events’. That’s gonna be something else
The value of MQTT is that it’s a simple, standard abstraction that can be used to communicate between two devices, providing a common language
One benefit for Zwave is that Zwave2MQTT avoids the need to requery your devices when restarting HA. It also has some downsides in that it’s still relatively immature.
Investigate MQTT if you have an actual problem to solve or need it to work with a device or service that doesn’t work natively with HA. Otherwise, no reason to do it just to do it
Ok I have spent some time trying to figure this out. I want to replace my light switch(3 switches on wall light plate) that wil work with my Hue and Wzye light bulbs. I am using conbee2. I cant seem to find a good zigbee ligth switch off this list? https://github.com/dresden-elektronik/deconz-rest-plugin/wiki/Supported-Devices#supported-switches

will this work on US light boxes?
wee flashing tuya
@dusty gorge input voltage is 220, so no
Putting a smart switch inline with another smart device is a recipe for disaster IMHO
the device probably has patched firmware if it's taking so long
well, shit
guess I'll have to find some other compact smart plug that I can flash
@midnight adder I have my house filled with tuya switches that I flashed (about 30 of them)
Sometimes it just will sit there and never flash
It was common to have to restart the process a couple times on some switches before it would "take"
However, if they are updated to the new firmware it'll never work. But you can tell which is which by watching the switch. If it keeps blinking steadily during the flash process, it isn't working. So after a couple tries if it always does that, it's probably updated and won't work
But sometimes it'll blink differently but not fully flash (but the process on the PC still just shows dots forever), it'll work but you have to restart the process again
In my experience
Has anyone used groups of persons? I'd like to setup some automations for when someone is home and also when we're all gone but I'd rather use a group than reference every person in the automations. Is that easy to setup?
Thanks, I Hate Face Swap... - https://i.redd.it/rgeehuvur3h31.jpg
Cute
Thanks I hate it
Is there a place were i can find rpi4 4GB on stock on earth ?
Not that I recommend buying one.

https://www.reichelt.de/raspberry-pi-4-b-4x-1-5-ghz-4-gb-ram-wlan-bt-rasp-pi-4-b-4gb-p259920.html
Why don't you recommend buying one anon?
what do you guys prefer on windows. 1. open/close sensor or 2. vibration sensor with gyroscope
Depends on the window I suppose, but open/close is simple and reliable
Gyro may be handy if it tilts though and can give you the angle
yeah I kinda found the old open/close to be hard to install on windows, while gyro I know if its open from top or side, and can trigger on vibration / breaking glass
On uPVC I've had zero issues with any open/close - the "closed" range is usually one or two cm
yeah I got windows from the 70s so awkward relationship between window and frame
Depending on the construction and gaps, the Sensative strips may work
I've got a few of their Z-Wave door/window strips and they're awesome - though an absolute PITA to pair 😄
I will take a look
On another note, does it exist some kindd of trigger to be put behind old light switches to indirectly control lights like hue ceiling lights (so the switch works as a remote). The fibaro dimmer needs to be connected to the target, and in general what I want is just a power connected remote
Well, you need something connected to the target so you can power it off. However, most Z-Wave modules have two outputs and two inputs. You can hook the physical switch to the input that's not connected to the light, and then control it with an automation
hmm depends if the zwave ones wants to register button clicks if not connected to target?
They will, they're designed to work that way
hmm okay got a load of fibaro dimmer 2, maybe they could work as a dumb remote for automations
yeah seem like possible with using the bypass module - luckily I got a load of them too
Im done trying to get the HUE remote to work, it drops off the network every 2 days
As I said, you'll want to hook the second output to the light so you can still cut the power
ah yeah you are right, so that the switch wont turn that off
I will take a look later. Got some fibaro walli and old dimmer2 just laying in the drawer
@deft reef start_flash, connect to wifi with phone, plug in smartplug and set it to pairing mode, hit enter
right?
How does the wyze bulbs communicate?
Pretty decent cheap bulb for the price but no HA support
@late gate how far away is your hue hub from your remote
Zigbee/hue works kinda like mesh, so if a hue bulb is in the vacinity it will piggy back off that to extend the range
@tame moss about 5-6 meters, with a hue light close. It does not seem like HUE is meshing properly - wish I could see a map of it as some of the outside lights are always jumping between connected and disconnected, even if all lights are 2-3 meters apart (20 outside lights)
the remotes are extremly unstable in this house at least
Hm, weird. My hue does sometimes drop out as well.
I'm personally using lutron caseta picos to control my lights and media
Dirt cheap remotes, like $15?
US? at least the american marked is blessed with a good selection of remotes and switches. European switches are extremely limited
Yeah this is us. But I believe lutron sells them in eu
They work off a special rf technology, and you need a lutron caseta hub for it (and the lutron caseta pro hub for ha support)
not sure if they use a frequency thats banned here, but its an option. Though problem is US switches look nothing like EU switches (we dont have any narrow and high) so looks a bit strange
for hue I had to make a custom frame to make it fit
Yeah that's the issue.
The picos are just standalone wireless remotes but they sell an adapter that mounts them to a wall like a normal switch. The adapters like $2.
how is the stability?
VERY good.
There's a size comparasion. Should be super easy to make a custom frame.
They have (for me at least) 100% reliability with home assistant and they claim a 10 year battery life span, which I believe as my friend has been using them for the past 4 years.
interessting. need to do research about the frequency unless someone in EU know if they use a banned one here?
at least would not reccomend hue dimmers to anyone. a google search show it seem like a common issue
They also sell two button versions, if that's more your style. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KLAXOE8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_R5wwDbETTRJPE
Lutron Pico Remote for Caseta Wireless Smart Switches with On/Off Control, PJ2-2B-GWH-L01, White - - Amazon.com
could be an issue though 431mhz is right in the amataur radio frequency - I bet they are not allowed to use for smarthome equipment
Just do it to piss those ham people off 😛
:P
Not sure where to put this in at, it's more Home Automation than HA, but I have a problem that I'm looking to solve. I have an office with a Wyze PIR Sense. I have the PIR sensor pointing right at my body under my monitor. I use this to turn on the lights when I enter the room and sit at my computer. For some reason, the Wyze PIR sensor will turn off the lights and declare the sensor is clear. I thought that it was too close and when the PIR normalized it was considered under average. I then moved it about 3 feet away from me thinking it was an averaging issue, but it still happens.
- My conclusion is that the sensitivity is off (which I can't change)
- The sensor is junk
- I'm still too close to the sensor
- Everything is good, but I need more sensors to get an better room average
Any thoughts?
I use a Xiaomi sensor in my office, above the screens so it sees me and the door
Two times it has turned off the lights, both times I was in a conference call, half asleep 😂
As I put my computer to sleep when I'm not using it, I use whether it's online or not.
@clever mortar listen to Mr power saver over here 😛
Tinkerer is away for 32m 49s with a message :point_right: Dinner calls!
Do anyone know about a EU plug that is really 16A rated, could be zigbee, zwave or wifi as long as it integrate well with HA
with power metering
ZigBee doesn't do power metering, does it?
So zwave or WiFi are probably your options
yeah. I have no experience with wifi plugs, except they seem much cheaper
Because they don't have to support any standard
16A for a socket though... seems unlikely
Might be worth checking out TKB, they do a Z-Wave plug for Germany that supports up to 3.5KW
true, at least at real rating. Shuko is just rated for 8A constant load
I use a tplink hs110 on my water tank
works with HA?
Yes
Native
Why do things keep breaking....... If only there was more interest in companies to use more universal apis that wouldn't constantly break things or suddenly stop working...
Thank goodness for local control devices 😛
yeah... That's the only constant thing that just works
thats interessing @clear ferry looks like they are commonly available in norway at least
Yes, I got mine at Kjell&Co
289 on netonnet, 100 cheaper than kjell
Aye,but I was impatient 😛
Not that I know of I have only ever seen tuya devices
@clear ferry what is the measurement update frequency on the tp plugs?
Pretty instant is my experience
It gives me a rating almost as soon as I start using hot water
That is good. I got an array of smappe switches, but those are every 5 minutes so not sure if thats often enough
meh just ordered a 10pk of the tp link so I dont have to mess with the bad mqtt stuff
😂 😂 😂 😂
woha I put out my 3d drawing for the HUE dimmer. I got called down from the one who selling them on finn
or somewhere, at least im an idiot
lol
Any suggestion for a zwave alarm panel that can read rfid or phone nfc, need to look presentable
does anyone know if there is a method that if you set the white channel on a rgbw led it will turn off the colour brightness then? the led is running esphome
Nfc module to suit raspberry pi, esp, zwave etc @late gate
3d printed or generic enclosure
And a poe or usb power
I don't think you'll get it in zwave
@misty bloom i had to break up my rgbw light
So the white channel was a seperate light
addressable?
Yeah i just changed the yaml
I would show you but I'm at work and it's on my desktop
could you snip when you get home? much appreciated
So i have light.bedroom_ceiling_rgb and light.bedroom_ceiling_white
Yeah I'll try to remember :d
how did you get it to turn off when using the color instead of white
Otherwise hit my up in 8-9 hours
They're just two completely separate lights
So you have to make a group in ha if you want to control them both at once
Yeah of course
I made "scenes" in node red for my bedroom
With instructions for every light per scene
cheers I'll give that a go, back home in a week
got bunch of HA stuff arriving tomorrow
wall switches conbee
more sensors
I was just adding a new wired PIR and accidentally cut through the 12V and ground line with the pliers when crimping a scotchlok. This shorted them together blowing the 12V power supply fuse and setting off all the smoke alarms and sirens. At least I know they work. This has been a test of the emergency broadcast system.
ha! and changed the colour of your undies too I bet
Too hot in the roof for underpants 🙂
😂
Alllll the colours
Anyone got an opinion of if rear dash cams are worth the money over just a front one?
Are you going to add videos to dashcamaustralia?
I will force accidents on the road for that express purpose
😂
Canberra drivers too close to you on the parkway?
I would personally just use a front camera. It will still record the timing of an event and add evidence if required
You can get cheap front and back ones from
atleast
The amount of times people move into my lane without the room or time jesus
I might just go for front, idk
Today two people decided to drift into my lane on athlon drive in a row
overtake one and the next one does the same
Oz people should just drive in the bush!
Yeah it’s pretty crazy. It’s called bush bashin’ @clear ferry
I'll buy that game for my Nintendo Wii
But only if crocodile Dundee comments the races
My car would not work well in the bush mate lol
The real Australian way it to buy a big 4x4 that you never take offroad
need that 4wd for the snowy hills they say
So many people buy the Volvo XC90 t8 and mitsubishi outlander phev because they get tax cuts on them since they are hybrids, but they seldom charge them, just drive fossile because no one demands them to drive hybrid mode
burning dinosaurs is cool
I prefer it, I'm pretty sure the production and at some point disposal of batteries is more environmental impact 🤷
I have a PV array I can be as bad for the environment as I please now
What do you guys use for automation? yaml automation, appdaemon or node red?
yaml for all of my 3 automations 😛
that sounds like a fully automated home lol
None of them are for home controll
so what are you using HA for? hehe
Mostly nothing ATM 😛
This repository exists mostly for my own amusement, but it may contain some things that others might find useful. :dancer:
Ludeeus got three times the automations I got
Just a week ago I did not have any as well 😛
Hehe
I am just waiting on shit from Ali and also from my solar company for integrating their api stuff
I have some automations, but not decided how to run them. I have a love/hate with NR, not sure about the yaml automation, and never tried AD
maybe I just got the grass is greener syndrome
successfully upgraded to .97.2
For my use the yaml is fine
Generally using Yaml as I'm not doing anything too crazy with automations. Also, with it as yaml I can keep it in source control which is handy whne I inevitably screw something up!
You can do that with AD as well, not sure about NR. The biggest selling point for me not using one of those it that it would add another point of failure.
@late gate yaml 4 lyfe
You know you're yaml'ing when you never use TAB in any linux file again
I never tab anyway 😂
See

lol - the moment when you add Home Assistant to an Job application
But, you will have to know Job Assistant out there 🤷
ordered a bunch of stuff from a local online shop and a bug made it come as seperate orders
@ocean mirage reminded me of you https://gfycat.com/wiltedapprehensivekronosaurus
Ah good old /r/idiots_in_cars
(or whatever it is)
always makes me laugh/scream/cry/wonder at the stupidity of the human race
I'm looking for cheap E14 dual-white (CCT) bulbs. Does anyone know any?
try the Yeelight Candle bulb
That looks pretty good! Unfortunately won't work with my other lamp though, it's just too tall 😦
whats the max height you need?
let me measure really quick
76-77mm
might be an impossible ask though tbh... The led one that I have is almost exactly that already and you need some extra boards for wireless connection etc in it as well
that height not including the screw in part ?
including the screw part 😛
haha good luck, smallest i can find is 117mm
yeah... It's probably not possible to cram so much stuff in such a small space unfortunately
@clear ferry haha wtf. how doe three people even do that
Has anyone used appdaemon
I'm not in love with nodered, but whatever I must not need a full reload of homeassistant to deploy
Development Iteration cycle is painful like that
I'm just about finished building a chicken coop (chicks arrive next week!) and I'd like to put a temperature sensor in the coop. There's no electricity... I could run an extension cord but likely don't need to. Is there any good temperature sensor that I can toss in the coop? It should be in wifi range, not too sure about zigbee/z-wave
powered might be an option now that I think about it, I'll probably toss a wyze cam in/near it
@modest sentinel xiaomi Zigbee sensors work pretty well
If you need range you could put a zigbee light bulb somewhere in between etc
@hushed basalt they won't repeat with the Xiaomi hub unless it is a Xiaomi bulb though, with Zigbee2mqtt it can be any bulb afaik
I use the Xiaomi temp in my greenhouse, that is 3 walls and 13m away from the hub, so the range is very good
I have bought 4 Mi Flora Sensors and 2 of them broke just like 2 weeks after, so I will stay away of them
And for Zigbee Repeaters I like the Osram Smart+ Plugs
Not even IKEA @hushed basalt ?
@hushed basalt You have electricity in Austrailia?
For the electric barbies!
Did they already invent the wheel?
Must have, so you can turn the meat on the Barbie
@clear ferry Electric BBQ?? You savage!
thats what tongs are for mate

lol what is that emoji
It's pc principal
At least we don't need to ask for solid streets...
I don't deal with solid streets or solid states
Solid Street drives?
😄
For the fast movement of data?
Damn I just was reminded of VR. Now I still want a Unifi Setup, a Teppanyaki Grill, a VR Headset... throwing around the €
I still need stuff for my car
New Wheels 18" with summer tires because current is just 17" with winter tires
1400€ for that car
Next week it gets a new painting of the bonnet, 400 bucks
And want to foil mirrors and roof
what car
Just a 2018 Mini Clubman
Bigger looks always better, but the car will be slower and you will use more fuel. As well as the tires get more expensive. So I just stick to 17/18, that is actually pretty standard here
A few weeks ago I saw a BMW X5 parking in front of the entry from the tower I work and the rear tires had like 30cm width
I don't wanna pay that
Yeah, the Tiguan came with the 19, considering replacing them with 17
Because they look nice, but don't ride nice, or cost nice
I don’t agree that bigger always looks better
17 is stock on my car and I’d prefer 16s to 18s
Also yeah BMW X5s are ugly battering rams
My old Bmw X5 was horrible. The tires are huge yes, and cost an arm and leg to replace
The tuning scene here is like "as big as possible, not seeing a cm of space between the tire and the rest of the car"
So 20"+

And #3 don't fucking cross post 3 or more times
@boreal pewter I once saw a Pajero with tires so big they built 20-30cm out from the wheel arch, Jesus that looked expensive to replace 😛
lol
If money was no matter I'd take a McClaren Senna and give a fuck about the size of the tires 😄
If money was no issue.... I'd want a factory new vw phaeton, first Gen, or a Audi 200 fully loaded, I might even accept a Opel Senator with the digital dash
I like the oldies 😛
Can somebody help me set something up in Hass.io/Home Assistant?
@copper elm #330990055533576204

@clear ferry lol blast from the past - We had this band (Russkaja) playing on our scool event like ages ago.. Gush.. I feel old
@hearty depot you are probably the youngest here! except @light trout
he is like, four and a half!
4 & 3/4!

Nobody is younger then Ludeeus 🤣 thats a constant

Everyone is having babies and I'm just sitting here making an automation to play music when I walk through my door
@unreal orbit Lack of having babies means you have the disposable income to do stuff like that nicely 😉
Very true
Honestly thinking about babys I can't yet understand how anyone wants that. I mean you even get a 3 months retoure (at least in my country)
@unreal orbit the process of making is fun, for most people, I can recommend it, however the needles involved for me were not so fun, but the end result was worth it 🤣 it also means YET ANOTHER PERSON to automate for!! which is always good 🤣
Hey baby, let's bind us 18 years to something that may turn out good, or shit. Worthwhile we pay at least 100k for it so it will be unthankful at least in the age of 12-18. And yeah we don't need space, or good whole night sleep"
Biology might have something to do with it. People and their weird feels
My daughter of 10 months already is starting to understand that my google home is important, she stares at it when I give it commands 🤣
That's one reason we are not having a baby yet. In my country you are guaranteed nothing as far as leave goes
the US ?
Yup
If you start working for HPE you get 6 months paid leave 😉
#bestcompanyintheworld
Not even 3 days, literally no guarantees
You could be fired for missing work to have your baby in the hospital
Had a collegue of mine in the US discussing this, he had 3 days, his wife who had a c-section got 6 days
while I get 50 weeks paid leave 🤣
Yeah but still, even 6 months free and paid. You got that little less intelligent thing around for 18 years
And pay a lot for it
you are such a downer @boreal pewter 😛
c'est la vie 🤷
😄
I'm doing 2-3 days leave every week for a whole year
so I'm only using 28 of my 50 weeks
but I need to make some dough too 🤣
and the kid starts kindergarden at 1y2m too, so no need for me to be home
I heard in the US you can pay like $2000 a month for kindergarden
If you don't want to go to public school, then yeah
we pay $50 for full boarding with all meals included
Our private schools are 99% religious-based
that is a nono for me 🤣
Which are "non-profit" for profit
You don't want your kids being taught that dinosaurs were made up by Satan to trick you into not following God's plan?
Why not?
haha, I don't think we are allowed to have that discussion here, @light trout will destroy us 🤣
Well when you tattle on me 😉
Apple accidentally unpatched a bug it had already fixed and now all up-to-date iPhones are vulnerable to hackers and there's a working jailbreak sitting on Github as we speak

@strange vapor don't forget disposable time as well
Time is what I am poor in right now
I'm happily without kids, and still time poor! Need to kill off some projects which will never get finished!
Shoot them in the head
Time box things
If they take over a certain amount of time per task it's probably a bad project or the wrong approach
Don't look at all these devices on my desk still in their packaging
In a few cases, I've just outsourced them. Cost more, but meh! At least they get done properly then.
Do as I say not as I do
I still have 5 bulbs to flash and program.
Plus an IKEA gateway to setup
Plus snapshot.jpgs from baby monitor to wifes watch on noise trigger
Plus interfacing alarm PIRs to a nodemcu
I am self studying, work full time and have a six month old
So no
But my one piece of advice is
Build simple, build up, build fast
Not "Wear Sunscreen"???
It's better to rough a project through from beginning to end and then improve
Than to try and do stage one awesome and not deliver value
If I was to start from scratch on most of the infrastructure I've built up over the years, I'd just collapse in fright. Lots of small projects which gradually worked together in the way I want, but which have taken years to actually build.
Saying that, I've been careful to automate where possible. So, for example, when my primary Mail and DNS server went bang a few months back, I was able to slot in new hardware, run ansible against it, restore MailDirs and DNS from backups, and get on with life!
Only annoying part was that it borked when I was out of the country. Proper Backup MX was a life saver 😄
Hey guys!
Could you give a hand with this small poll?
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/help-automation-scenarios-poll/132914
Thanks in advance!
Humberto
Hello guys! I would like to kindly ask less than five minutes of your time and fill this small poll. As a student and domotics’ enthusiast working on a domotics use case, I would like to know how frequently the following scenarios appear on your automations. Thanks in adv...
So my Deskmini is built, except for the RAM
weight is an important factor in cooling ofc. So much so that it was common knowledge that heavy amplifiers are going to be much better than cheap light ones. So nowadays the high end manufacturers sometimes just add lead weights in to the devices
I also think that the connector plate of the pipes to the cpu is pretty massive, often like 1-2cm thick and massive, so it weights the most
However the cooler is still the best one for a Deskmini and you still can change to a bigger fan
I'm still rocking with a full ATX tower with some massive cooler for my now 8 year-old cpu...
One year ago I would never imagine to hire a lawyer in Norway to make a company follow the consumer laws :/
Just reading through this https://learnui.design/blog/4-rules-intuitive-ux.html and looking at the amount of dropdowns in the Configuration UI 😦
Obey the Law of Locality · ABD: Anything But Dropdowns · Pass the Squint Test · Teach by example
@strange vapor though there is a lot of type-ahead control
Goddamnit! Wondering why a time based automation wasn't working. System clock set to UTC, we're currently in Summer Time :/
Yeah, everybody gets to chose which they want - permanent DST or not
And by "chose" I mean do what everybody else does
Sooner the better! Might mean less changelogs like:
* New upstream version, affecting the following past and future
timestamps:
- Palestine will not start DST until 2019-03-30, instead of 2019-03-23
as previously predicted.
- Metlakatla ended its observance of Pacific standard time, rejoining
Alaska Time, on 2019-01-20 at 02:00.

Just got a nice Mi Band 4
anybody know if it can be somehow hooked up to home assistant
#330944238910963714 might know 😉
Happy im not living at this address. Would never remember it
For anyone that doesn't have code-server setup, you need to do yourself a favor and get that going. By far the greatest addition to my self-hosted setup in months
You mean vs-code?
It's a self-hosted instance of vs-code, yes
People often ask what the best way to edit your config is ☝
Vi :p
That would require ssh
Visual Studio Code - Community Hass.io Add-on for Home Assistant - hassio-addons/addon-vscode
Yes really awesome - ingress is neat too
I push my code to GitHub then my server pulls it and restarts HA
Means I have source control as well as no secrets in the repo
I have a golden rule of never putting sensitive information in a repo folder, even in gitignore
One way copy/deploy to server
Urgh
Can't change my hardware key without signing up to samsung and agreeing to everything
might as well. They already own you lol

What is your failover system in case of electricity failure ?
A few million hamsters on hamster wheels hooked up to dynos
You mean when I have a dumb house @torn horizon ?
most houses are dumb when no power
Exactly
haha
my alarm has a backup battery
Mine does too, and the alarm company has keys to go in and flip breakers if needed
Looking at updating the alarm system in my place at some point. It's the cream of 80s tech!
Works perfectly, but would be nice to have some interface outside of a dodgy keypad 😄

I fit a SonoffSV to my ‘80s alarm so I can at least control it in HA and can also get notifications via phone>email if something happens as well

oh no, aliexpress sale in five days... 💸
What you ll get yourself?
Need? What has need got to do with it?
But, now I know the sale is on, there goes this month's budget...
it's the lie I tell myself so I can sleep
How about both? 🤷♀️
Still waiting for my last delivery- stuck at the "zoll" for the last 3 weeks
Well, I can get a discount on the Lenovo I'm considering if I buy it through work... so maybe both 😄
🤣
You're bad for my finances you know that 😛
Add it to the list of things that break when I'm around 🤷♀️
@eager trench Had a look at doing the same, and even found someone who had documented what pins I could abuse in the control box. However, some previous installer has put some sort of resin over the pins!!
Is anyone a HDD pro and can quicky tell me if it's worth to get 2 SEAGATE STHP5000400 for a Deskmini to run Torrents and 4k Plex streaming?
Worth checking the Backblaze hard disk stats
Cant find it
Your Google fu is seriously weak
Here , try this:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Backblaze+Hard+Drive+Stats+Q2+2019
I have it open and dont See it there 🤦
The page itself I found
Ah nvm they dont fit a Deskmini anyway
Any time you want to know about HD brands and generations, they're a great source
You'll find out how well they last, and whether there's any major issues
Anyone know any other hidden trigger words for google home devices than hey bobo?
Yeah but obvisouly this HDD is not listed, or did I miss it now 3 times looking? @clever mortar
Hi, does anyone know of a component which can monitor and comand lan Linux nodes? For example run reboot, monitor CPU/RAM etc?
#330944238910963714 would be where to ask
I have a love/hate relationship with Lutron's Caseta. I love how well it works and how natural the switches look while still making them smart. But the limitations they put on their systems are so arbitrary! They used to limit you to 50 devices and now have magically upgraded it to 75! And they probably treat it like they made some break through in the software when really they just raised their artificial limit designed to make you pay for a more expensive system
🤷 it costs money to host a service, limiting devices is one way of cutting costs
Also that seems to be them advertising that there are literally more devices you can buy that are compatible with their system
isnt lutron locally controlled though?
I assume they also have a cloud service for remotely controlling devices
Yeah well they used to limit you to 50 devices per hub
and now i think's 75 per hub
and i get the cost of maintaining the remote access stuff
but really they limit caseta because they want you to purchase their RadioRa system which is crazy expensive
or the just slightly cheaper radiora select
Hub limits are usually hardware based. I doubt they just changed that with an update. If they did then I agree that's BS
Yeah that's what I thought too but they already increased to 50 from something lower I think like 35
so not quite hardware based!
Still could be hardware limitations that they have optimized with software updates (such as decreasing the memory that each device uses), but I won't rule out them just doing things that corporations do
maybe but how their marketing and product strategy looks I doubt it
they also have a normal hub and a "Pro" hub the only difference is the pro one also has support for telnet interface which allows it to work with HA
and this "pro" hub is not sold at stores and can only be bought by people like electrical contractors
My theory is that their more expensive RadioRa select isn't selling well but Caseta is so they are trying to keep up with competition like samsung smart things or philips hue because caseta is priced the same as those but radiora select is so much more for only a little bit more feature-wise
Woah my Deskmini is running 😄
Life saved
Fun fact, accordingly to a benchmark that cheap ass Ryzen 5 3400g has an overall 8%+ performance above an i7 6700k which my dedicated Hetzner server has and costs 50€ a month. Except for my poor internet home connection I think about getting a local storage box and just move everything here
@unreal orbit
The marker makes it almost look like a street into the w/e this is
It is my current location, you always enjoy the Norwegian scenery @unreal orbit 😛
I enjoy all Scandinavian scenery. I hope to go there one day soon
Mmmm beer
gah i hate when peop.e don't listen!
GF is out looking at cars, first car for her and shes falling into the saleman crap and i'm like nope don't do it! I'd be with her if i werent at work haha
I let the wife pick cars, she has better sense than me 😛
she wanted price on one and salesman wanted to get some basic info from her, i'm like heck no don't do that, if they won't tell you the price walk away, they wanna run your credit and give you what they want!
LOL i bought my car before i met her, no sense at all then
i seen the car and said sold! Now i'm complaining 5 years later that i'm still paying $600 a month for it XD
but its so fun!
Sounds like America, a place i would never buy a car , or become ill 😉
LOL yeah as a constantly ill person i just don't go to dr or anything, cheaper to just miss a day here and there when it gets really bad than pay the outrageous insurance costs that don't cover squat anyways
Probably the best live acoustic album ever made
Motherbleeper I hate hotels that don't have extra pillows in the closet
That's what house keeping is for
Hello, I need enough pillows to build a fort and I only have four
I hear you are the business traveller of us two 😛
Some months...
Some of my colleagues really do travel - I refuse to live out of suitcases and hotels
I wish I had more travelling, like once a week, but the baby needs me too, so I'll hold back until she starts kindergarten atleast 😛
Once a month is my this is ok threshold
Though, I've had some months where it's been and which city am I in today...
Had a colleague who traveled three days a week, that's too much
LOL what is traveling?
You know, what business people do 😛
I know a sales rep who's only home for some weekends, and basically lives in hotels, bars, and airport lounges
To me, that's a crazy life, but they love it
I played in a band with a sales guy who was like that
He literally had a different girl in every town
Wherever I went with him some girl would show up out of nowhere
somebody with an Synology NAS here that could try a curl call for me?
My NAS need seconds, something about 10 to reply to this simple login request:
curl -d "method=Login&account=hass&passwd=*****&format=cookie&api=SYNO.API.Auth&version=2&session=SurveillanceStation" -X POST http://192.168.178.2:5000/webapi/auth.cgi
Would be great to know if i'm alone with this problem
@leaden adder I'm having trouble logging in with that (I don't have surveillance station, and things tend to be locked down security wise), but the error response comes back in 2 seconds. Having said that, when my NAS' drives are spun down it easily takes 10+ seconds to even get the DSM login page as unfortunately it needs to spin up the drives for that. Seeing how you're using their web API I would not be surprised if it has the same limitation
@leaden adder just tried it on my second NAS and it probably took ~15 seconds for it to come back with a login failure, and it did spin up its drives. So likely that's the delay you're seeing
good to know, thank you. That script to detect wether my surveillance station is in home more or not worked wonderful with a 5 seconds timeout for months. And since a few weeks even a 15 seconds timeout is not reliable anymore 😦
any chance your surveillance station stopped recording in that time? (drives full, can't connect to cameras etc.)
that would make it spin down the drives whereas it didn't before
can't think of anything else
There is enough space on the drives and the camera are working fine in the web gui
i tried the login while scanning for viruses, still this long time
even the official Synology Componen get's timeout now

Sleep well my child
@midnight adder let's continue the topic here, as I'm looking for something for my own setup as well
Where are you located? My experience in Finland is that devices like these get caught by Customs every time which adds another 24% to the price
So personally I'm looking for a used i3 or i5 NUC which should be less than 100€ at this point everything included
power consumption might be the concern. i move from mini desktop to raspberry pi due to money power bill 😆 20 vs 0.80 a month
NUC idle consumption is around 6W, Pi around 2W
The old i5 NUC I'm looking at is around 5W
OMG this low !! Windows 10, idle on desktop 5.6 W
i should have consider this as well then.
NUC power 👆
Yeah, it's pretty impressive. I set up two NUCs for my dad, one for desktop and one for HTPC and both have been working pretty well, even though they are on the slower side
I think a few users use those cheapies with good reports
let me take a look in china store
Dont take a NUC
Only problem with NUCs is the fan
I got an i5 8th gen nuc at work
And the fan is quite loud
Tiny fana
Wasn't the Deskmini available when u bought it?
I don't know what that is
Deskmini A300 self-build miniPC/miniServer is just much better and cheaper option to a NUC
But it just came out like half a year ago
I had a look online
Since then there is no reason to take a NUC except you buy a used one ebcause of €€€
Interesting, kind of ugly though
I also wanted something with integrated processor,
Just byo drive and ram
Oh you wanted something not modular so in case of a break you can throw it away
guess just grab a rap pi 4
I've been building pcs for decades
And I've never replaced a cpu
The CPU i put in has always been the only cpu in the system
And the warranty for the nuc is like three years
After that it's getting due for a hardware refresh anyways
Yeah I don't know anyone except stupid intel fanboys that would take an intel, at least since Ryzen 2xxx
Yeah in my experience CPUs last forever
Yeah okay
Computers are things that let me do what I need to do
Not things I work on for fun
My time is literally more valuable than the $100? Price difference
For $750 aud shipped I got a nuc i5, 16gb corsair ram and a 256gb samsung evo nvme
And all i needed to do was insert a dimm and screw in the nvme and it's done
And it's not even my money
oof too much
why no prebuilt hp
But yeah I can agree with that, I like DIY stuff but computers are mostly so basic so its not that engaging
just work
The nuc alone is rrp $670
My NUC is silent - never heard the fan
Do they have fanless models?
I'm not sure why mine makes sound
@clear ferry You're HP... Can you let me know when you're releasing nice Infinite Bandwidth and Disk Capacity servers? Might have need of them this morning!
But it's definitely not silent
Apparently they all have fans
Maybe you live in an eski or something
Australia...
That is very vague
Fanless would be cool but I guess that only really works in fully integrated stuff like the surface pro i5 models
@strange vapor HPE mind you, HP is just shite, but we already do, it's called green lake or flex capacity, so we monitor your usage and add hardware as needed to your environment
Don't think you can make the hardare fast enough for what some of the devs I'm dealing with are doing :/
We always have atleast 10% extra hardware onsite, can be 100% that can be enabled on the fly
In one of the dev environments, had the level of logs increase a factor of 10000 over night, and they're complaining that the logs were being lost!
The one that fits your usage, in speed, ports and features 😛
Cisco ASR series 😉
Go Flexfabric 12500 then!
Unifi Security Gateway 😄
Anything around 100 usd? 😄
Intel® NUC Kit NUC5CPYH quick reference guide including specifications, features, pricing, compatibility, design documentation, ordering codes, spec codes and more.
What is your opinion about this one ?
Not a router dho , separate question
Honestly for a 100 bucks I wouldn't expect anything special
Even a full Pi4 costs 100 bucks lol
If you go higher, for like 450€ you get a Deskmini build
And from there on I would consider uATX/mini-ITX builds
(for higher performance tho)
Like serverbuilds.net even has very cheap 1155 builds
100 usd for the router
Unifi Security Gateway costs 100 😄
And for now i am fine with raspberry like performance
I just do not like the issues
That is why i want a mini pc
For my usage it should be more than fine for now
This one?
Ubiquiti UniFi USG Enterprise Security Gateway Router
If it costs 100 then yes, there are just 2 versions. Second is "Pro" and should cost like 300
That is to consider if you think about rebuilding your WIFI to Unifi AP's in the long term
I plan so this is what comes in mind 😄
I see
Yes you are right
How this rebuild works
Is there any better at 100?
Or this one seems universal@for the price range?
I can't answer that honestly. Yet I only used FritzBox Modem-Routers
I wanna rebuild to Unifi because Wifi from Wifi Routers is usually shit
Truly
I’ve used a FB WiFi/Modem/Router for years and it works well...
Yeah you gotta spend a bit to get decent APs in routers
I got a unifi AP lite recently, working well
If I was looking for WiFi only that would be my choice too..
I have a FritzBox 7590 and I don't get any usable Wifi signal in the next room with just one wall
So I extended it with Devolo DLAN1200+ and even that works shit
So next Unifi
7590 here and I use a 7490 as a mesh repeater... big house... works well
@boreal pewter I have a Fritzbox as well, but it's being used as a straight bridge to a little rackmount server doing PPPoE. Then using Unifi for the Wireless.
I already found a way to degrade the FritzBox into Modem-Mode as soon as I get Unifi stuff 😛
Then will do it the same as u @strange vapor
The fritzbox became a lot more reliable after I disabled the Wifi and other "features" and turned it into a dumb bridge!
😄
Funny I bridge a Netcomm to the VDSL as the FB has crappy modem here lol
But VoIP, WiFi etc are fine
Can’t beat that Broadcom chipset in oz eh?
Wifi really depends on everything that is around. Like I'm in germany and our houses are real houses, really thick walls with metal and everything in. Can't compare to american 20cm wannabe walls I can even kick through.
And in a big town with 20 neighbours in the house it is really just about who has the strongest wifi because they interfer with each other
I guess with Unifi my neighbours will love me
pretty much David
Hahaha...... 20cm??? 10cm internals here lol
LOL
Front part of my house was built in the 30s, and the walls are about 3ft thick. Extension was built behind in the 80s, and the walls are only 2ft thick mass concrete :/
Previous owners went with proper overkill on the extension!
I also have run Ethernet everywhere here anyway as I despise WiFi crept for iOT and phones etc...
So, there's a few Unifi APs dotted acount!
Wow
Handily, they ran Cat 3 and put RJ11 for phones in every room. That has all been replaced with Cat 6 and RJ45s 😃
Nice. Can’t beat that
Hell, the house I grew up in was mostly built in the 20s. The way they did it back then was to put up wooden boards, drop all the rubble they could between the boards, and then pump in cement.
When we were extending it 15 years ago, we found actual Axles off old horse carts in the middle of the wall!!
LOLOL
@midnight adder Start small and work up.
@midnight adder yeah just build a small Deskmini for just 450€
It is ok for the start
With almost 0 money left at the end of the month
I started on a Pi3, and it's now moved to a little Intel N series based rackmount box hidden in the attic!
Where do u live Wilding?
And I think the move from SD card to SSD was the most benefitial part.
I may have gone through a, em , few SD cards on the Pi3 😄
Pi is great for starting off, and the Pi4 is a stunning piece of kit! The logging does tend to not make SD cards happy though :/
A Pi4 kit still costs not too less
You can cut back the logging though
Replaced the Intel Nuc behind my TV with a Pi4 over the week. Happily playing 4K videos, and has freed up the NUC for other uses.
Sounds good
4k movies without transcoding, yeah
For the price of a celeron nuc i can get 2 pi 4’s
Yup, no transcoding.
I would have offered to give away my Pi2 but I know it suddenly dies when it's inside about 30 degrees and it's pretty weak tho
Because I can purchase a basic nuc for around 120 usd
With ram and ssd?
@boreal pewter ah, so kind of you
I think it was arount the €50 mark for the 4GB model, but you need to add the cost of the case, PSU and hdmi cable on top of that which brings it closer to the €80 mark
MicroSD
And ram is kinda cheap ( used 4 gig at least)
Right so a full nuc is around double the price of a full pi
Not really
Like a working one
I mean a pi is around 50 usd here
Without any case
Or any fancy stuff
So if you pgrade it a bit it is nearly the price of a nuc
However u are right pi still cheaper
Pi+case+sd-card+power x 2 = nuc +ssd+RAM
Kind of yes
Well apples and apples - you need those things for a real workable setup
is it overkill to use ssd
Oh indeed... I meant SD
So let's do @midnight adder Crowdfunding. I'm in with 5 bucks
@low stratusn no way sir, that would be too kind
Even if it sounds awesome
But I must say you are one of the nicest people around there on the internet. All this HA Discord group seems nice and helpful. I am glad that I am interested in this
As said I'm not too sure if a Pi2b will make you happy in the long term. For HA it is called "experimental" and "not recommended"
Read: nightmare
@boreal pewter you think anybody would ever support such a thing apart from you? I mean is there any rationale to it?
Crowdfunding you mean?
Maybe here within the community a few
But noone agreed yet
I only have the 2b to offer :/
Pi is around 65 usd here so, 60 more to go, that is either 12 person per 5$ or 60 per 1$ ☺😄
Maybe I should dance in return or something
HELLO
DONT SCREAM AT ME - I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG!
you are right my friend, sorry
😛
@midnight adder @boreal pewter Count me in, I mean heck it, sometimes I spend 5 dollars on ice cream easily, why should not we help him out once
you only need 11 more and you are okay, good luck
10 - as long paypal is ok 😉
For real guys? Ah no way I cannot believe this
See
I have PayPal yes however I do not know how @boreal pewter planned it 😄
I am just a mere puny human in this topic right know
However i am a happy one
So many kind people
I have no idea, you either open a page on any crowdfunding platform or donation page via paypal or so 😛
Maybe anyone here is familiar with that
PayPal donation page seems good idea, I am not sure how crowdfunding platforms work but maybe they take a cut or something
Hmm, thank you I will check it out
Yeah right there is a special paypal donation link from within paypal?
I am not sure
I think it was
https://www.paypal.me/
Post it. Text it. Tag it. Share it. Shout it. And let your friends pay you back in a tap or two. Grab your PayPal.Me link today.
Thank you I will check it
Is this working? @hearty depot @boreal pewter @midnight adder
It seems to work, but they take 100 % fee
Its so fun with wifi disturbance during day. Making smart home extremely difficult
kind of interesting how that works psychologically
100% fee? Really
ALternatively just provide your paypal Email and everyone needs to send manually via Family and Friends
wouldn't hesitate to pitch in X HUF if receiver got most of it, but when I see that PayPal takes X/2 and receiver gets X/2, it's suddenly much less easy to go for it
just funny human brain at work
then could you please send me your email address?
i think if I send it as family it is free
U sure?
wait a minute i will check it out on the web
ah
i see
it says on the web
if you use the Pool it takes a fee
depending on the amount
and also another one if you want to get your money out
so it is rather complicated
You just create a paypal.me profile which then has a link like paypal.me/PROFILE
Like paypal.me/anon
It's in the settings
I am not sure about that but maybe he is right
I am not using PP too often
Okay
I will try to find it
I think i’ve found it
It says personal payments
Let your friend and family pay quickly. Its free for both of you...
Go to paypal.me/Wildling0720 and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.
This one if I am right
Thank you @midnight adder @boreal pewter @marsh elbow @hearty depot
I appreciate your help
There's still a fee but it's smaller. 37 %
Hungarian forinth?
for real Stig?
mhm
Yeah sorry but it could be dollars euro anything
I just could not choose anything else
u can change currency
Because of my locale
@midnight adder how much did u get yet?
5 Euros thank you very very much for your contribution 😃
You know I really appreciate all your help
And this quite generous amount
So happy now
goal is 30 HUF? 0.01€?
☺
goal is 30k
ah! point xD
Go to paypal.me/Wildling0720 and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.
Not the other
Oh thank you Sir
Tomorrow I eat a lunchbox 😉
Do not give me any of that kind of money you need
I mean i really glad and appreciate help
Just do not want to rip anyone off
Or anything
And thank you I really really appreciate it all of you
Only around 9 more people I think, I could not even believe this
I should make you a keychain guys or something 😄
To remember this good deed
Ah my
so which one works now?
Go to paypal.me/Wildling0720 and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.
Do you think I'm Dog or something?
Someone did it again
How is it on the road?
Nope - but still intrested - atxbyea is traveling atm - god knows where and what he does there.
I just installed a Synergy 12000 and four networks switches, plus workshop and VMware
That is nice indeed
Going back to the airport now
Where are you ?
Molde Norway atm
@clear ferry is that norway dude
Haha, no, I've flown .. 4-500 times in my life probably
It's not scary as long you're the only one wearing a parachute
I love mountains and fjords and everything. Except cold, yet maybe i just need better coats
For reel?
500 times
🤣
Something like that yes
U can get used to it by now
Parachute heh, so true, that could help
If you manage not to pass out
But we should not say such things before his flight 😄
Pff, I flew from Tromsø Norway to Auckland New Zealand without parents when I was 11, I'm not easily scared 😛

Wish*
I do not know if its work related but it is a good thing to travel
When I red Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness and facts about the author I always wondered how great could it be to travel around even if its work
People tend to go to the same place a lot however instead they should travel around to widen their perspective by learning from other cultures
Currently waiting on a second Pi4 to get delivered to the office 😄
good idea.. I still rather stick at home 🙄
It is better then visiting a place over and over again
@strange vapor what is the difference between the 3 and the 4?
POWER
Thank for whoever sent me Kroner 😄
It is pending for now but it will be fine I think 😄
Thanks
Go to paypal.me/Wildling0720 and type in the amount. Since it’s PayPal, it's easy and secure. Don’t have a PayPal account? No worries.
Unlimited power ? 😄
I hope someone sends you some in the weirdest money format which exists 😄
Just arrived 😀
It's Picard!
Amazon Prime same day express? 😄
a what ? 😄
Ordered yesterday evening from The Pi Hut
Captain Jean Luc Picard, of the USS enterprise 🎵
Oh that is nice
Could be my happy future someday just without the pickard thingy 😄
Oh yes
Half my team bought the Picard bust when it appeared on sale on Think Geek.
I was asked if I wanted to manage a team a few years ago, I declined,I hate people
Perfect for manager
I've only eaten at KFC once in my life, it was 14 years ago in London if memory serves right
I ate to many time as it was freeish
😄
Not too many since
What food do you prefer @boreal pewter @clear ferry @strange vapor and others? 😄
Sushi but I get to expect more and more so options get less and less
Edible food!! After that I'm open to trying anything!
I prefer Asian dishes, flavourful and spicy
