That's really a #330944238910963714 question 😉 (see the channel topic)
Oopss
quick question...
templating json/? how?
I tried this:
{
"rgb_color": [
{{ states("sensor.random_r") }},
{{ states("sensor.random_g") }},
{{ states("sensor.random_b") }}
],
"entity_id": "light.002007915ccf7f4991de"
}
sorry
Please take the time to read the topics

lol? on firefox?
apperently one of my addons is for chrome - intressting that that's working
I swear... who ever designed the smartthings arrival sensors should be banned from designing anything ever again.
heh. I can think of a lot of things people should be banned from.
Like posting Solved it to a question, without posting what they did 😛
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyS992qdUbg
banned from the forums!
After an argument with Mung, Gazpacho bans himself from his stand. Make sure to check out Planet 1UP, where Nate gets up to some crazy stuff!! http://youtube...
just ordered a xiaomi smart scale 2 and a xiaomi mi bit 4
time to get healthy or something
with the power of smart products
say, does hass actually support the smart scale
apparently, somewhat https://github.com/lolouk44/xiaomi_mi_scale#setup
Btw, for those who hasn't seen the new windows terminal https://github.com/microsoft/terminal
Pre Home Assistant way of turning lights off... - https://v.redd.it/nipclws9dnf31
i've been using the win terminal for quite a while now both at home and at work
it's pretty good though the settings def need some work
Is there some big internet outage ? can't seem to reach half of the internet .. 😒
twitter not working, aliexpress not loading right, ...
facebook too...
Working fine here, it's just you/your ISP/your country 😛
hmm, seems to be a chrome thing.. just tried twitter in incognito mode and it loads fine ...
weird
Hello everyone im new here 🤚🏼
hey @distant merlin 😉
Hi
Welcome to the money pit
😂
Hahah
I'm trying to build a new component, can someone point me to a article somewhere how to do this?
@shy notch I think I need you 😄
Does nobody ever take a moment to read the channel topic 🙄
https://developers.home-assistant.io @hard basin
Yeah I did. And I took time. Or is that the same answer....
And the developer channels
Channel topic: For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related...
Yes mister Tinkerer, but I don't see the specific's I need, I was hoping that there was kinda like a step-to-step take-me-by-the-hand-for-I'm-an-utter-noob something.
Right, but, wrong channel 😉
Well and I did honestly read the topic, but you are right, thats not the right channel to ask :-p
This is for chat about NOT HA
So, what kinda car you drive?
#developers would be where you want to be
One that has lights, buttons, and wheels
Oh, and a manual explaining how all of that works 😛
hey anyone know if it's possible to hook up speakers and mic from a different machine to my hass install
Does anyone uses adb with a xiaomi mibox ?
No but I think for the basic connection and control there is no difference. Android is Android. But if you don't get access to any kind of "Enable Developer Mode" then you're most likely unable to.
If we were to host a HA user group, the abbreviation would be HAUG which in Norwegian is "a pile" which sounds like a good name for it
Let's do it @light trout
It's different as there is not debug over tcpip mod 😄
Well without any access to developer options you can't send command and read system info. Just like admin rights on a server
I don't think they sell the Jetta here anymore
Github event webhooks are cool 😄
Think it was phased out in the 2000s
The Jetta appears to be a mostly US car these days
Since they are produced in Mexico
Thanks Mexico ❤
The Passat / Passat CC is probably the relevant counterpart here
Or the Audi A5 mayhaps
Of course! Thanks for clearing that up @clear ferry . I always thought Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen was Wedding day at the Trolls Meadow, but Trolls Hill makes so much more sense.
Finally, I'm useful😛
Great album
Great composer
Let's do a HAUG at @low harness place 🎉
You’re welcome. I’ll teach you what a real lunch is.
Smorgasbord
You know that we ALL will come? @low harness
yep on my way now ...free food
@dull chasm I suspect Scandinavian food will be very bland to you
@clear ferry really that sucks
i thought @low harness said he would show us some good lunch
He'll make you eat surströmming for sure
wtf is that
Something you will not willingly touch with a 10ft rubber pole
@dull chasm https://youtu.be/_haw_YDC_zo
Can you make it through this video without barfing? Check out more awesome videos at BuzzFeedVideo! http://bit.ly/YTbuzzfeedvideo MUSIC Moonlight Sonata Lice...
yea i pass
Oh that’s a good idea. You’ll have to wait until october, though.
did I hear food?
Good news everyone
my HA instance is still running
even after my neglect
good work Rpi
gives RasPi a pat on the head
My Ring Doorbell has been dead for a week
thanks HA
❤
I’m getting ready to upgrade my HA hardware to a Pi4. Any reason I might need more than 1GB RAM?
Mountain of add-ons?
Does that apply to Hassbian as well?
No~That issue is for HassOS, if Hassbian have the same issue I'm not sure of.
Gan?
gallium nitride, smaller circuits than just silicon
oops, wrong chemical
https://appleinsider.com/articles/19/06/21/gallium-nitride-chargers-what-are-they-and-why-theyre-great is a pretty good read about them
Mmm awake baby and 60 minutes on Plex
I'll be happy when you can buy chargers with fold out power prongs for AU
Probably never happen though. Legal ones at leasy
There's probably some code that says the plugs/sockets have to have the stupid giant shround around it
And what’s with Aussie plugs having ‘wings’ on them? I have to buy extra wide spaced power boards
Aussies will never understand terrible plugs until they've been in Europe 😛
Adaptors build out 10 cm and more
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
Americans will measure with anything but the metric system https://t.co/m7EFYJbFAX

Who was using Unifi?
UK plugs are pretty dope
Low profile, right angle design
Solid pins
I wish we inherited that from the empire
Instead we just get the Queen on our money and bayonet bulbs
The fuse in every plug thing is a bit silly though
I remember some dude did a whole video on "UK plugs are amazing"
I saw your complaint about plugs, Have you ever seen the ones they use in the Philippines?
Honestly plugs are just a money making system.
And if we would choose the plug by highest amounts of users in regard to where people mostly visit for holidays then EU would win
Anyway anyone around for Unifi?
Well I use an AP and an er-x @boreal pewter
(the absulute cheapest setup out there afaik, well I could have saved some bucks ditching the SPF port - but ll be handy in the future maybe)
Using the "cheapest" setup you most likely haven't paid 200 bucks for a stupid CloudKey and rather used the UNMS Install Script which raises the docker containers?
nope - only used UNMS & the controler a little
but all the setup just via the UI/terminal
I'm testing for my company to use UNMS in CentOS VM instead of the current Unifi Network Controller in Windows VM Setup. I don't understand the differences between Unifi Network Controller, UCRM and UNMS.
But for now the script is not finishing the install
Gonna test in a new fresh VM
I'd rather have a bulky plug that can have a bedside table pushed up against it
Than our medium size straight plugs that need about 10 inches of clearance from the wall to furniture
images (3).jpeg (645×475)
This does not bring joy
thats it I am moving to the UK
We also had a bad habit of putting power sockets on the skirting
Literally in line with the floor
There is like 1mm space 😄
I wonder if any led bars from AliExpress are good, I don't care if they output an illegal light, but if they actually give out good light for me, anybody ever tried any?
Not a bar, but I have one of the RGB-CCT LED tapes, and it's "ok"
Plenty bright, but all the LEDs are slightly different in colour, which annoys my OCD
Ha, which one is it you ordered?
Let me dig through my order history
I'd bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32880349391.html, but I'm looking at trying https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32863309450.html next
Oh, I was thinking for my car 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
So buy the 12V ones 😛
Don't think those will throw the light 600m or more 😞
For that you need a catapult 😛
Proper offroading stuff then
Have you seen the size of a moose crossing the road in the winter? 😛
I've seen what happens to cars that assume they can hit them
😂
We have some $8000 leds at work
Maybe closer to $9000-$10000 actually
Would they be suitable?
Yes, just send them to me and send the bill to @ocean mirage
time to lounge
Richard cheese and lounge against the machine?
heheh.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251121-REG/arri_l0_0008989_skypanel_s60_c_led_softlight.html
Goes for about $200-$300/day
And I think my sd card finally faile... again
That's ok, you've got backups... hopefully 😛
@clever mortar my backup my mind taps head
Yeah auto backups got me covered thinking of switching to a usb drive
atxbyea just preparing for the nordic winter. We won't see the sun for 6 months after all
What are you running on your pi. Hass.io?
x86 4 lyfe. Bare metal docker is king! Long live containers. All hail the compose!
But seriously though I gave up on running rpis in my rack
I use them as edge devices now.
I know the sd card you are using matters and A2 cards work better but does it matter for usb drives? or just size and speed of the drive?
SD cards 👎 👎 👎 👎 👎
Meh, with a little lack of effort you can easily get 2 years out of one
Of course, if you buy cheap trash, or abuse them...
I have gotten 8 years so far out of my usb boot, and my desktop HDD is 14 years 😛
Yeah, I won't miss it when I finally relocate HA
Yeah I think I just put my sd cards through too much abuse
I eventually plan to migrate ha over to and old mac mini I have laying around
my HA lives in docker, on my QNAP NAS
hey guys, i had bad luck with "smart" plugs. Can I still use them on HA without tasmota? If so, how?
🤷
There's a massive, MASSIVE, range of things labelled "smart"
It's like asking if that car will do 400 miles between refuelling...
Didn't get what you mean :/ it is this: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32897620233.html
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
#diy-archived would be able to help you. If it has a known API then yes. Otherwise you'd need to flash them with Tasmota/ESPHome or similar
@tawny pebble what he means is that your question is like saying "Hey, I got a round lightbulb that isn't working. Anyone know what's wrong?"
But hey, I'm all for attempting mind reading again...
Uhmmm anyway, it can't be flashed. I opened it already but it's really locked. Was scrolling thru the comments on aliexpress page and a guy wrote down this thing. It is just not possible 😐 Asked already on the diy and also in tasmota group (people there know this stuff too even tho they say no eheh)
So, in general, since i do not know HA so deep, i was wondering if there is a way to connect these plugs (any plug) to HA if not by mqtt thanks to tasmota.
there's IFTTT but no. No thanks :/ so yeah that's it. I just wasted 💰 ): Not gonna connect to Alexa too. I won't use them
oi. big update completed on my custom google_maps device_tracker component.
for anyone using it, give it a go and drop me a dm with feedback.
#609399695466430465 @odd hill 😉
WHERE WE"RE GOING, WE DON"T NEED ROADS...fine.
That only counts if you have a Mr Fusion
@tawny pebble they are tuya, so you can control them through the tuya smart life component in HA
Which is a cloud based service
@clear ferry this is a very good answer! I was already preparing them for selling
But still, it requires a account to be created sooo not sure of keeping them. if no one takes them i'll continue from here
thanks, as always!
I started working on a new theme, already came out better than I was expecting in a short time, still needs tweaking.
@tawny pebble Dont buy those fibaro clones (neo or what they are called), They do not confirm for EC and after having 10 that all failed cause of heat (bought different places) I would never use them again
@late gate really all of them 😐 eh, still, there are things i'd love to monitor and these plugs come handy. how did you fix?
10 of 10 was too warm yes. I checked stuff with my IR camera once and unplugged all Fibaro Clones right away
100+ degrees
at 2-300W load
New feature is awesome!
homeassistantcast
I'm really looking forward to the service that allows us to cast from HA 😃
That's the point my various Google displays suddenly get a whole new life
Metoo
Maybe by that point I'll have had enough time to be able to upgrade HA 🤣
@clever mortar shouldnt you be a bleeding edge guy? :p
My test box is
My production box... there's the WAF factor, plus also the fun that comes from Z-Wave and PyOZW causing HA to randomly core dump on startup
And a few months of too much going on
yeah I see that - my WAF is right now -1000%
My primary focus is on not breaking the family's experience - if it's not solid and reliable, it frustrates them
I guess with v 1 stability can start be a bit more reliable
Well, for me stable will come from separating Z-Wave from HA
That's been (mostly) solid for me
I think I need a firmware upgrade on the stick though
oh. my thermostats was not happy with that
I see a lot of work is done one 1.6 ozw python now
lets hope they will kick it the rest of the way
Yeah. I don't really care if they move to that or get Zwave2MQTT working with it really
I dont care eather, but both is on the old version so 1.6 is needed
or a whole new library
im not impressed by ozw
platforms like homeseer, do they buy licenses or something for zwave products?
Or, you know, have paid developers 😉
got a point there
I said it before. I have no issues paying for a HA branded zwave/zigbee hub with proper support up to 3-500USD
Also If I was a dictator I would make it law nobody could make hardware on 2,4ghz anymore - yes logitech harmony hub Im looking at you
No more bluetooth, low level wifi, zigbee, or microwave ovens
rather keep that old stuff spamming on 2,4. New stuff should support a wider range imho. with 2,4 im thinking ofc about wifi, not zigbee, microwaves etc. The world would be a better place if 1. routers shut down the 2,4 if no clients requets it 2. people stop putting up 30-40db antennas etc
or idiots who put up esp-s that spam 2,4ghz ap points. A guy in the unify discord does this and he is acutally proud of it
Pretty sure that's illegal, at least here in the US
the ap spamming? yes it is, but you know script kiddies. esp with this "jammer" selles preloaded on ebay
@midnight adder Did you try this? https://github.com/thomasloven/lovelace-theme-maker
@low harness No, but looks awesome. I was pretty surprised how difficult working on themes was... this looks like a great solution, I will try it out this afternoon, thanks for the tip!

Nifty ThomasLoven
First Day of work done
wheee
spent it manually copying files from pc 1 to ext HDD and then those files to PC 2
New job? @valid halo
I copy and paste files onto an Ext HDD and then copy and paste from that onto a computer
I am a tech worker drone
please insert laptop
🤔
You could just automate that then goof off
I dont know how to automate it. So I'm doing it manually.
While hating the fact that windows 7 has shit vision accesibility options compared to 10
Indeed
Need to figure out a quick way to turn on and off those features
Why are the files being copied
We're migrating people from win 7 laptops to win 10 laptops
They're remote workers. So we copy files from laptop A to laptop B
Then we ship Laptop B to them
and I dunno what happesn to Laptop A
Not really
we do like 1 at a time
because we're not using a program
we just manually C+P
why?
No idea
Lol
Even if you were copy and pasting you could still do multiple at the same time
But 🤷
If it was me I'd probably just figure out a bat script for both laptops. Script on the donor laptop sets a static ip on the ethernet of say 10.0.0.1, the new laptop gets set to 10.0.0.2.
And plug in a lan cable between them and have the old laptop copy everything you want to 10.0.0.2
But hey if you're getting paid haha
If you don;t want to mess with scripts you can save settings using this https://freefilesync.org/ I use it for off site backups. Plug in external drive, files get copied.
@valid halo after working as a sysadmin for years (15years ago), local files copying seems strange, we had no local files back then and any user could use any machine and still reach their files, are you working in 1993? 😂
1⃣ 9⃣ 9⃣ 3⃣
I dunno man. I'll ask my buddy I'm working with why we're doing it by hand. Maybe he just wants to stretch out his time.
Yeah, I don't see any logical reasons in these cloud days to do that, when we did it with "my briefcase" in the early to mid 00's 😂
What is cloud
Cloud is a far away thing in obsrved through a very long narrow tube called vdsl2
Or adsl2 🤢
Yes. That is what I mean
Anything over 12mbps is just for piraters and kids to watch netflix according to our government
I am both of those
A frivious luxury we can't afford and don't need
Nekminnit they spend $60-$160 billion on the network depending on how you count it
For vdsl2 and fixed wireless
Lol
No connection that their friends are chairmen of companies winning juicy contracts
I think the last thing I heard is that 70% of the population can have 50Mbit or above here now
Supplying pit and pipe, decreipit copper network leasing, ntus, node infrastructure, installation contracts
I have 80mbit on vdsl at home
We stopped building copper networks decades ago
But that's the best I can get. And will just get worse with more cross talk and copper neglect
Actually I know a town that still uses the copper the Nazis left after occupation for most of the city telephone lines
I'll put in fibre in my home when I have my house. At least between my desk and my rack
Maybe the Nazis thought fttp could wait until after the war
They built most if the railways and motorways in Norway too
They were very effective within a few years
Our roads are decent ish
Our rails get ripped out though
Why haul cargo with a train when you could flood the network with 200 road trains instead!
If we would have kept them a few more years we probably would have railways all the way up North
@clear ferry what you pay for your line?
There is missing 20Mbs because I run this on wlan just now - but I have to pay 50 buck for this
When I would take 20 Mbps Down I would only get the half upload
I don't even want to think about who the provider is
I can tell ya ;) but maybe you get nightmares
For a 300/300 line he probably pay around 40-50$
A1... A one?
Maybe the same global scale company 😱
Where the heck is my thinfoilheat?
God deam it.... I would like a line like this too :(
[ 😡 ]²
Well germany is pretty bad. Choosing a good provider is even pretty important. And then the difference between cable and DSL... so if you don't want cable and you're not in the luck to have a good local provider like Netcologne you end up with Telekom and that is easily 50€+ for just the same amount of Mbit

Hello,
I'm looking into different home automation systems. And the 2 best/ biggest are OpenHAB and Home Assistant.
Are there people here who have used both?
What are the differences? Or why did you eventually choose for HA instead of OpenHAB?
I tried openhab first, didn't like how it worked at all, then tried HA and met the community, and I was sold
🤦 thats about 10% more then I pay
get your shit togeter austria 🤣
Best particularly is meaningless - it's personal choice
Biggest too is largely irrelevant. If it does everything you want, who cares if something else does a million things you'll never use 😉
Personally, for the open source one, I'd suggest you download and install each and play with them for a couple of weeks. See which one suits you better.
Clearly Home Assistant is the best... at least according to those of us who love it 😛
also used IO broker and afterwards open hab - never got to a decent working state
Thanks for the answers
go to the open hab disccord and they ll probably say the same as we do
I will try them both 😃
I know folks who've gone HA -> OH and loved it. I know folks who've gone OH -> HA and loved it.
I know folks who've tried both and then gone with a commercial solution...
the start is the hardest part 😛
From what I could find: OpenHAB is older and more mature. But those articles are written 1-2Y ago. Did it change now?
Older != better
Newer != better
Home Assistant is more actively developed
OpenHAB is more stable
True
For some people, stability wins. For some people, new features wins.
But you never had any problems with stability?
With newer updates (foring)API's or integrations are changing 🤷
well you dont have to update
Some, but not while running
Upgrade time is interesting if you're not reading the release notes, or if you're hit by a bug that nobody else found
Z-Wave can be painful for some folks (like me) - there's an edge case with the underlying Z-Wave library that causes random crashes, but only at startup (related to corrupting the cache file, so you can delete the cache and it'll be fine)
Why the hell HA doesnt start.. ok lets check the logs.. mhmm.. wrong setup on component xy.... but it worked before....
ok letz check zhe dockz!
I always blame @light trout anyway 🤷
That's a blast from the past

hi. my lovelace badge for life360 is saying entity not found.,
what is the syntax to put after the life360 in badges?
in customisation my entity is this "life360 liberty"
badges:
- life360 ??
i cant get it to work
the entitiy is reporting data correctly but cant get it on the badge working
any help cheers friends
"life360" is not a proper entity id
That 👆 and #frontend-archived would be the correct channel
is it perhaps device_tracker.life360?
sorry wrong channel. i read that device_tracker is not needed. but i tried it thanks
Just look in states and find the correct entity
thankyou.
if i had a temp sensor id say its bloody cold . but im in australia so maybe not as cold as some
So... about 25C then 😛
11c at 11pm. at the moment getting about 6 through the night !
Thats still warm.
I walk around at nights outside for my job. It is a warm winter think the lowest we have had is 1c and last year was like -3c
That is NZ
I'll raise you my +35 in summer and -35 in winter
i see your +35 summer but you got me on winter ! does it make beer drinking problamatic?
We get 0 snow.... The worst part about it I think. Though I dont think my job would be any good if it was that cold and snowing.
11c is still t-shirt and shorts weather
I do t-shirt down to -15, but that is me
Sounds like my son...
I stop shorts at 0
Mind you, that was me when I was younger... It's only snowing, I'll be fine without a jacket
I've been like this since I was born, and my daughter appears to be the same so far
We are made for winter
😄
Good morning, all! (or whatever time you're in)
1.55am... technically morning though I should be saying goodnight soon
4pm already? what the hell
Time keeps on slipping, into the future... 🎸
I'm even more out of the time loop as I only work 50% and it throws my whole schedule off
I think I got a rasberry pi hoarding problem, just got 5 of the pi4 4gb and bought some extreme sd cards (140 nok so cheap enough)
🤣
Yeah I would have rather built a server for that
nice, specs?
Just a R520 for my freenas setup
I once checked the price for the RAM when I was planning to build my Deskmini but I still had to buy a new car. It was 80€ then. And now, every day checking, it is always 90+. And therefor I'm not willing to buy it 😦
oh, xenon?
ah, isnt that a 100w power hog?
Don't care about power usage🤷
@clear ferry you can do so much better for cheaper than a r250
hehe, whats your power bill?
For less than $210 with shipping from the us to Norway @quartz ether ? 😂
Thought you said $2000
@late gate only 12g, but I have 400g laying around
more is better hehe
@quartz ether local currency 😂
does the dell suffer from the same problem as the HP G7 on the raid controller?
@late gate used 37000kwh last year
about same as here
@quartz ether looked at 24bay chassis from China, but shipping was horrible
But drop shipping from the us to Norway is affordable
you have a full rack of computers?
@clear ferry is oldschool 😛
I have a full rack of.. stuff 😛
Lol... same haha.
if you need UPS you can get a free APC 5000
?? how
ah, I meant atx. Im downsizing away from rack computers. Got a load of UPS
Haha
its about $20 cheaper on ebay right now direct from rosewill
building a new power bank that support micro grid (solar + battery + generator)
nerd cave hehe
I do need a ups though
That is enough for most people 😂
If you throw them I'll pick em up for sure, if they charge 😛
I can check them when I get the motivation :p
I'll even leave a 24 pack of beer for your trouble 😛
I will let u know when I moved them to the garage and tested them
Ooohhh so good
hahaha
anyone know what sensors the ecobee presents HA?
#330944238910963714 would be where to ask that @unkempt umbra 😉
ok. will ask there.
Other good ones are alias ffs=”sudo !!” and alias avadakedavra=”kill -9”
added 🤣
I am organising some kind of meetups in Uden (the netherlands) and would like like to contact people from the netherlands who can talk enthousiastic about HA and do a presentation.
@junior forge might be interested?
Meanwhile in Scotland...
Alright, I got the laugh but I'll delete it because gifs are annoying
Meh, it's #the-water-cooler - and it was funny 😄
It's #the-water-cooler , embrace it @unreal orbit ❤
well, almost time to go tinker
Scotland sounds like New England during autumn
Whats the difference between homeassistant docker version and hassio?
Mostly people unable to read using #330990055533576204 rather annoy people in #449717345808547842 with issues
But beside that in Docker you do everything yourself, and I think in hassio you have a few "addons" which are docker containers theirselves too and you can just spin them up with a mouse click
@boreal pewter what I meant is there an obvious reason to use hassio over docker?
hassio = noob and lazy
docker = self-administrating
cool.. thx
So far I know
Everything that is not available as hassio addon has then still to be spun up by yourself just like with pure docker
as I have a Synology NAS I'm going pure docker
Not far off. Hass.io is aimed at those who want an appliance like experience. Everything else is for those who want more involvement/control
(rather than calling Hass.io users noobs, though lazy does seem like a good fit 😛 )
Well IMO if you want to do hosting you have to learn hosting
Nothing is free of effort
I'm not disagree with that 😉
I've always been of the view that the closer you get to the workings, the more you learn. The more insulated you are, the less you learn.
This may explain why I've broken so many things over the years 🤔
Well I've been self-learning Administration for years but doing LPIC 2 years ago was whole different area
Learning the OS more indepth
While people usually only install the OS, Docker, spin up container and then tell "oh wasn't that difficult" and having a fully unsecured server around
Tinkerer is the reincarnation of Kali, the destroyer and creator 😛
Hang on
I'm supposed to create?
Damn...
I tend to channel a chaotic version of Shiva more than Kali...
I think I've probably touched all 9 alignments at various times, sometimes even on the same day 😛
It's more fun with a little randomness
My wife says I have a random personality, does that count? 🤷
🤣
dank mode
One metric ton of concrete
What does the yellow sing says? I spot the german word billige (cheap)
Something like that
It's Byggmax. Danish cheap construction materials.
Has anyone done a inquiry into the gender distribution of HA users? Considering the high WAF needed to successfully implement HA one could assume female implementation is never good enough, while the implementation among single males might be higher
This sounds like a master's thesis
The drawbacks of building a platform based on user privacy means those kind of metrics are not available without giving some sort of voluntary survey
An idea for the #creator-connection maybe
For an anonymous survey
With gender and number of household members
I know there are a handful of women here, but I think it is predominantly men spinning up instances
I love seeing metrics and being positively surprised
Me too, I bet there are more secret women than we think
Like my wife doing cyber and information security studies, actually 11% female
That was twice of what I expected
It is an interesting topic to think about. The question of why the spread is so huge is actually really complicated
We are 100% male OPS, 1 Female as Java dev and 1 female as Scrum Master
As well as the only person doing marketing is a woman too
It's a massive waste of potential that we have so few women in tech
One can spend a lot of time screwing with annoying and confusing error messages when they grab the wrong certificate thinking it's the CA certificate.
I've worked in it for 15 years and I can count on three hands the number of female techs I've met 🤷
having three hands does help in IT though I suppose
I keep hearing the statement that 5G will revolutionize IoT. True or false?
5G? Probably not. 5Ghz enabled devices? That will make a lot of things better for wifi devices
I think 5G is the first that actually caters for the needs of IoT properly, so maybe and if implemented correctly
To me it sounds like a weird thing to market when it comes to 5G. I can see the low latency working in some situation, but mostly IoT is not really latency dependent, so is there something else it offers that I'm missing?
I just want to say that casting to the Google Home Hub is amazing. Thanks to the people who busted that out.
The other thing from memory is that it supports small/short transmissions without a mountain of chat
@clear ferry i was speaking to a female devops engineer on Tuesday
I think she's a bit annoyed by some of the forced push for women in tech
I can imagine, they are shouting for it here in norway
I think she didn't go into much detail, but she called her opinions not politically correct
remember when I started my current job, I have a collegue who is female and has worked in the biz since the 80s, she told me to not treat her differently, in 2007! yes to more diversity
From my impression at meetups and conferences etc, no guys are standing at the top of the treehouse saying 'no girls allowed'
There's just not that many skilled applicants
I know a few, but most of them are retiring the next few year, or dying, whichever comes first 🤣
You could say that about a lot of people in general with certain skills
I'm sure 90% of the telco techs with legacy knowledge are either dead, redundant or retired
9 women can have a baby in one month right!
Remember seeing a mail about someone asking for some one with OpenVMS skills a few year back
the reply was "have you checked the graveyard?"
And now I'm the only one installing those boxes, does that mean I'm going to die ?
It means you should take a long holiday then ask for a raise when they know how much they need you
already did that once this year, plan on doing it again in september 🤣
If I only did, then I would be set for life 🤣
they recently brought a pensioner out of pension in norway to fix some ibm mainframes

A pi tablet 🤔 could be another nice display. Just can't find a pricetag
We'll spend what we need to, which may include on sports cars and nights out, that's not a problem is it?
Sounds reasonable
Got myself some sonoff minis 😂😂 can finally automate my home fully
"Some"
good morning, automators
Jesus. I hope you have a commercial grade wifi router
muchsad.jpg - chiao smart thermostat tado°
you ll go back to your producer
I realy dont get their price politic - I rented that thing 3 years ago for like 70€ per year.
not too good, not too bad - just ok.
you can go from renting to buying - you ll get discount on that
but... when you do such thing - dont sell your newer version of that thing on amazon for 90€ (buying my old one would cost me 170€ 🤦 )
so instead of getting me a decent price I just send it back where it most certenly ll get thrown away, because old hardware 🤷
Don't rent hardware? 🤷
Well it's now the second time I rent a FritzBox for 2 years, about 80 bucks for the whole time. And since I was working at private customers and had found like 1295 defect routers I rather rent for less than the half price of a new one
That would be like 5 years of rental for the price of owning one, just that my guarantee doesn't end after 2 years
why do you use fritzbox? because of the DSL/ADSL/cable capabilities?
As a generic all in one for my VDSL2
Only point for a Fritzbox are the DECT capabilities
What the young guys using? Dont forget that germany is a little... special..
btw - how the hell did you managed your vlans? Radius?
nope, just manually configured and assigned to specific ports (both tagged and untagged)
bit oldschool, but not a company here 😉
eeh is falling away after I dont want to get extra AP's only for IoT/NoT stuff
I just try my luck with firewall routes and IP ranges on my sweet little ER-x
Guh. Every time I try something new with automation it's one step forward, two steps back. Been trying to get rid of smartthings and use HA for about a year and a half. Latest attempt has seen me move zwave to zwave2mqtt and attempt to use zigbee2mqtt along with it. Architecture looked sound. Then I discovered that zigbee2mqtt doesn't work with the HUSBZB zigbee adpater. You have to use the CC2531. Sometimes you just have to laugh at fate because it's sense of humor is morbid.
I recommend getting something more powerful than the cc2531 though
Or get a router straight off the bat
The cc2531 is very very weak
I have an ikea bulb right next to mine acting as a router :D
Don't know if anyone already seen it but just in case: https://twitter.com/Splatter_Shah/status/1143556723266994176

My searches for standalone VDSL2 Modems result in a very least amount of devices
Only interesting is draytek vigor 165 and the reputation is not only good
Well I have a Fritzbox and everyone is crying why I choose a FritzBox
Seems like alternatives are almost non-existent? 😄
I still have that box on rent for 1 1/2 years but I still tinker with a unifi setup and then I don't want to do some dirty hotfix with static IP router from the fritzbox through the security gateway
never heard of it
I have only heard about Fritzbox here 😛
Intelligent high-end WiFi for top speeds and significantly greater range. Experience the Internet, telephony and multimedia on any type of connection: IP-based, ISDN or analog.
I hate the branding lol
lol
Still from my searches there is only 1 product which I consider up to date for 2019 and near future and that is the vigor 165
That's sad since it kinda has a feature cut-down router as well and you have to google how to deactivate it
That's like there would only be 1 smartphone on the market wtf
Germanistan
ah I see
Here the modem/routers that ISPs often give out have good modems in them so I bought one of those and bridged it to m edgerouter
I only want a cheap solution, so the small security gateway. ANd for that I would just need a modem standalone
I tho still have the fritzbox for 1 1/2 year actually
I have bridged router modems for the last 20 years 😛
more is more
Never actually used a stock item I got from my ISP
I wanted a standalone modem too but thats just because that makes most sense in my head
I want to use the possibilities of Unifi fully and not deactivate some features and not work with static routes and such hotfixes
but this bridged telstra modem and edgerouter/unifi AP is the most stable thing I've had
These days I just have a fiber termination point
That goes straight into my core switches
However looks like I have no alternative
I created a shopping cart yesterday for all the things I still need, still almost 700€ + probably 120 for the vigor 165
https://www.mindfactory.de/shopping_cart.php/basket_action/load_basket_extern/id/4b6b2022129ffc3d59e0ca19b08cba2269732838c997e2c4ab9

loool I just found a forum where someone explains how to "reactivate" the pppoe-passthrough mode which was thrown out of the fritzOS firmware ages ago 🤦 😆
Pppoe, peasants 😛

Hi, is there a special room where the users talk about KNX and HASS ? Or a specific room for notifications with services like telegram?
@compact flare knx would probably fit in #general-archived and telegram will fit nicely in #330944238910963714
Thanks
Mmmm Peter Gabriel Live In Athens, worth checking out
Cries in bridged vdsl2
I wish I had a raw ethernet port
Our fttp isn't raw fibre though. It's in a ntu with an ethernet rj45 out.
at least altibox support direct fiber termination without converter. I cant stand bridged ISP equipment
Still better than this vdsl2 dumpster fire
On gel filled abused street infrastructure too
Lol VDSL, you are so 2011
@clear ferry Telenor still pushes it https://www.telenor.no/privat/internett/bredband/adsl-og-vdsl/ :p
Yeah, probably to very rural areas @late gate 😂
Somehow running 128 services per strand to vdslams is worth a national infrastructure
Project
Like where my mother in law lives, it is 6km to the nearest telephone junction box, so she can't even get ADSL, but now they get 500Mbit fiber connection😂
They've also structured the wholesale pricing so that ISPs have to massively oversubscribe their bandwidth
My mum is on fttp and her isp dropped down to 3Mbps during netflix viewing hours
Lol, that would be illegal here 😂
It reminded me of ATV when it would get bad during certain parts of the day and weather
To advertise those speeds and not be able to deliver them that is
Standard Evening Speed—plans using this label will deliver a minimum speed of 15Mbps during the busy period. This plan would support a typical usage profile of residential customers (e.g. streaming one high definition movie at the same time as web browsing on another device during the busy period)
Be grounds for compensation and termination
Different speeds at different hours sounds like something
would love
huh the way you talked I assumed you had good internet
thats more like it
But how much do you pay for @tough igloo?
I have it bundled but I think 90 Aussie clams a month just for the Internet
No set / promised speed?
It’s the same price I was paying years ago for “ADSL 2”
Yes I pay for 100/50
I always check speeds but I’ve never had an issue
Then it is pretty close really
I pay 599 Norwegian crowns per month
98 AUD it seems
Yeah I’m really happy I got the old good NBN as opposed to the new NBN crap
Yeah that’s pretty good
I can pay a lot more for 250 down speeds but can’t be bothered
Oh damn 250 is available now for houses? How much for ya
Let me check
We can get gigabit here
For 200aud roughly
1000/1000 that is
Not your lame Aussie non-synchronous speeds 😛
I’d go that
$250 a month
Oof
Yeah I don’t need it. But I want it 🤣
It’d be useful
If memory serves right
But I don’t got fiber anyway
We got the 250/50 on docsis I think, or was it a combined docsis fiber line
It sucks. Everyone should have it
Yep
Move to Norway 😛
And remember to vote for us in Eurovision, I always vote for Australia 😂
I remember when Norway won it
Sure
laughs in Norway
I was thinking about 3d printing a case for a HA hub with zigbee, bt and zwave external antenna. Has anyone done the model before, plus was thinking to implement a digital RGB led strip into it to show status

No power monitoring I guess @tawny pebble
@clear ferry my same thought :/
So, I really love the state history graphs, but in home assistant I feel like they are really limited and i have issues doing longer time frames. I am piping data to elasticsearch, but I can't seem to find a similar visiualization and my google foo is failing me. Any ideas how I can find a similar visualization?
Grafana?
yeah, I think theres a grafana one. Apparently called discrete
Any windows 10 gurus? I need a quick question answered
Completely not home assistant related, sorry

Ordered the remaining things for my Deskmini build
Still below 500€ overall
And at work I already built the Unifi Network Controller Docker-Setup if that's coming somewhen 😛
Well then. I'm late because the hassio supervisor got updated at 1am last night, and broke a bunch of stuff. This resulted in me getting a notification that my apartment door was unlocked. It wasn't, but HA didn't know that, because it couldn't resolve deconz' IP.
But I still had to waste time going back to check.
lol how is that possible to be unable to resolv the IP?
The Docker DNS is always up to date actually
#330990055533576204 can help, but see the recent chat in #devs_supervisor-archived for some context
(basically, there's been changes that may come as a surprise to those that specify the DNS servers)
lol it's been a time since I've cleaned up in my main linux instance that I have migrated around for 10 years
8GB in /var/mail
🤣
no wonder apt update failed with no space left on device
found this while cleaning my stuff

So i bought a NUC and added 2 external drives with. Wave and zigbee2mqtt usb taking up the remaining two slots. Now I’m in need for more storage. What is the best way to go?
@mossy badge i would buy a nas and free those 2 usb
Freenas 4 lyfe
Ok let me ask a stupid question then
So NUC has one Ethernet port. Let’s assume I were to use an Ethernet cable to ensure fastest internet how would I connect the NAS?
Wah?
So I would need a switch right?
Your router is a switch
You don't have one today ? you have only a NUC and that is connected directly in the wall ?
Been tinkering the last few days if I should go full Unifi.. my router is far away and not any space to place a NAS inside that cabinet
@mossy badge go for Gigabit switch
gigabit, you peasant @tawny pebble
@clear ferry gIgAbIT
I don't even think you can buy 100mbit switches now
So that’s why I’m thinking of running one cable from my isp and into a Unifi switch. Then I should have plenty of ports
So basically you plug a NAS into a switch then from a random port into the NUC. And this will provide HDD speed and internet speed?
My setup today is a media converter for fiber-> zyxel router(isp provides) -> then I’m using airties mesh today.. but considering going for Unifi. But I’m afraid of dragging Ethernet cables all over the house. As I assume so have to glue it to the bottom of the wall
The AP of Ubuquiti are incredibly good. I have the AP Lite and it covers the whole apartment and also outside of it. I get the signal until the tram station 50 meters away from my apartment :O
About the rest, yes, you connect everything to the switch and this little dude passes everything to the router. the Zyxel, in your case
Ok: I’m considering removing the zyxel completely .. but it is installed in the one side of the house and the on the opposite side I have a Ethernet cable. So I guess I would need two switches one on each side to be able to cable more than one device. Right?
For a better wifi, one should use 1 AP for 20 devices connected. I read it somewhere in the unifi manual. But of course it must not be necessarily interpreted as a rule.. I'd suggest you to wire those devices you can wire, because cable is always the best choice
I live in 100 m2 over two floors. I have a mesh today where I have two out of three airties mesh cabled(speed: 500/500)
usually you can not simply remove your ISP router. there are usually limitations. My ISP thinks this way and i'm forced to use their router
But upstairs I don’t have a cable so totally relying on the mesh wireless. I@ tempted to buy a nanohd and install it in the first floor and hope that it reaches the whole house
There is a large post where people have removed it. But it is tricky to ensure tv signals. But since we are only using the Apple TV. Then it is not a big deal
So my conclusion is: keep the ISP router( put it in bridge mode) connect the Ethernet to a USG into a Unifi 8port switch. Then having one cable back into this closet so that I still can have a cabled Apple TV on the other side of the house. Then wire the NUC, NAS, and an AP and just hang the AP on the wall
My main worry is that I don’t know anyone that understand these things and as you understand from my questions I’m totally noob
I pull one cable to each floor
and have a switch on each floor
everything goes to my garage core switch-cluster 🤣
Do you pull it inside the wall or outside?
The idiots building my home placed this in the hall.. so it’s like opposite side of my house
All electrics in my house is on the wall, so I do the networking like that too
ok i see, well it's simple stuff so luckily plenty of guys here can answer! i've been doing these jobs for a long time and wherever possible i suggest to cable the house. wifi is good and all but the cable is most of the time the best.
For cabling the apartment you don't need anything special. A switch and many eth. cables.
It's up to you if you wanna pass them inside the walls or do like me, outside the walls hidden inside canals.
I have a little rack cabinet mounted on a wall and here you'lll find the nas, the server, the switch and few other things. from the switch you pass the cables that will wire the apartment.
keep wifi to mobile devices, pretty much
@midnight adder PLS which one did you buy? i'm so tired of reading internet and buy think that don't work
Only device needing Ethernet upstairs is my Apple TV there as well. Other than that if we have ok WiFi then that is enough for mobile
lemme get you the link of the plugs i own
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
i own uh
i now own seven of these
flashed them all with https://github.com/ct-Open-Source/tuya-convert
I only own the schuko model by the way so I dunno about the others
if you want silent switches, don't go for these, they have an audible thunk when switching the relay
@clear ferry what NAS are you recommending? Isn’t a NAS overkill when you have a nuc?
@mossy badge if you buy the AP (access point) of ubiquiti, you'll notice they need the controller. You can also not giving any controller and they will work but you'll have troubles if one day you wanna change the SSID or network or these easy stuff.
A controller can be found in Home Assistant as plugin, so you can play on it! or also install it in a VM.. theres not need to use it. just to warn you. Beside this, these AP are the best in the market
@midnight adder I just bought them, again. because the first order i made a mistake and bought the 3 PIN version
1 hour ago i bought this exact one. And i was hoping that tuya-convert works
oh i own one of the 3 pins, by accident
that one isn't flashed because it worked out of the box with hass
but yeah it has that french pin sticking out so I only use it on europlug stuff
@mossy badge I run freenas, currently on a 4 bay self built ITX box, moving to a Dell R520 next week with 12 bays, and adding a 12 bay shelf to it later
@midnight adder if you plan to flash it, you can use my template: https://blakadder.github.io/templates/lonsonho_3pin.html
If you prefer to invert the led and having it ON while the plug is OFF, change GPIO4 to Led1.
neat
@midnight adder well im in austria so it's schuko everywhere. the FR plug works awesome here. The problem is that it's only 2000W and no power metering. that sucks
yeah
@mossy badge or just buy a qnap or a sinology 😉
i wish xiaomi made a schuko version of their smartplug
because i am a whore for china
praise xiaomi
@midnight adder https://de.aliexpress.com/item/33054476688.html TADAAAA
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
but i fear no PM
thats bootleg xiaomi
xiaomi never released an EU version of their plug
its kinda like aliexpress has a fuck ton of "xiaomi economical brand" products that aren't actually xiaomi
they're just made to look like xiaomi's style
I kinda noticed that when I found this:
https://de.aliexpress.com/item/33010769662.html
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
and i thought"well also chineses have to wipe their...." so maybe xiaomi thinks about everything
this is also a good example https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33012798603.html
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
(they are good pens though, I already own a few regular ones of this brand)
a friend of mine bought them, or at least i guess it's this. he said the pens are really good
So your strategy is to run cable and then add a switch when you need multiple connection
i also own the official xiaomi pens but I don't actually enjoy their feel
@mossy badge the other way round: have a switch and run cables when i need
this one does have mijia on it
@midnight adder ever tried those pens with friction erasing?? awesome!
@midnight adder https://de.aliexpress.com/item/4000008247381.html I have this (bought in austria) but there are better version in china/japan (i go there quite often). It's a really good ink and with the rubber tip of the pen you can erase what you typed using the friction. no dirty, no mess.. ain't even rubber it's a plastic material
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
so gotta go! see u next time folks!
Man Quatroking is such a familiar username for some reason
As in I probably played with you or like forums/irc
sure i was pretty active there back in the day
Could have been, I did do the irc
I remember a dude named Shrub if that rings a bell
¯_(ツ)_/¯ you probably recognised the name because i built the minecraft wiki from the ground up
haven't been involved with minecraft in like five years though
I was thankfully too old when Minecraft came out, I played a lot of quake and UT though 😛
s/too old/worked 750 hours overtime per year 😛
I only play PS these days anyway, went through all uncharted games, all dark souls and Bloodborne and all Wolfenstein games the last few years
Need to find time for Sekiro at some point
I didn't really like sekiro a whole lot
I thought you are more the Tetris guy, as the only game in your childhood
You are thinking of Tinkerer 😛
gah fuck I can't find the micro-sd card I used previously for flashing
oh right
i put it in the opi
tiny ass buggers
So I went an got a AC Pro connected it to my router (isp). just to compare with what I already got
So I see the speed wise (fast.com) shows quite low speeds, but when I connect the cable it is 500/500
so is this just expected even when teh computer is just 1 meter away (testing..)
on my iPhone xs Im getting 200 when sitting 1 meter away
Upstairs I get like 30..
just broke a 32gb micro sd card while trying to eject it from my raspberry pi case
fuck life and fuck micro sd
I am now finally SD card free on my primary HA instance
what'd you replace it with?
A VM on an old laptop 🤣
ah that'd do it
I used to have it running on my PC but then I wanted something that could last on battery power for a while - been thinking about upgrading my storage on the pi
I'm not missing the Pi, that's for sure. I'd look at a old/second hand laptop with a battery still in reasonable shape
only laptop I have is this old powerbook and I don't think HA supports that
If you can install Debian/Ubuntu on it, HA supports it
Hass.io may be tricky if it's not x86
looks like the last python build for PPC was only 3.5
Ah PPC... yeah, that's likely to be an interesting challenge
it's currently making a shiny platform for my 3d printer
Pi should be starting to catch up tho'. I went with a ThinkCentre Tiny 915m myself. They're not a bad price
I should grab @late gate old ups, battery power without all that laptop buggery 😛
Yeah, upgrading to a NUC or similar is on my to-do list, but the laptop is here now, and as I'm using Proxmox migrating hosts should be easy
Deskmini build Tinkerer
Ok, a small compact form-factor PC 😛
Proxmox... isn't perfect, but it's free, and it works, and it's not VMWare 😄
I'm sure the current (free) version of VMWare ESXi sucks less than it used to
It does 😛
So, it's just 💩 then 😛
Only downside is they disabled the API in the free version
Honestly, haven't touched it since the days of 5.5, and I found the UI back then... "underwhelming"
I may play with the free edition again at some point then, always good to keep the skills from getting totally rusty
Yeah the webui in the free version of 6.7 is tolerable
I prefer working on the cli of the hosts anyway 😛
@clear ferry will run windows me to host hassio
what do you guys inlcude/exclude in recorder?
in general terms
Help! I have been trying to figure this out for a week. I have brand new intel nuc with ubuntu desktop installed. After awhile I cant connect to nuc. I get a steady blue blinking light on the NUC. I then would I have attach a keyboard to turn on nuc. I have disabled on power , screen etc on Ubuntu. Here is the strange part . I took the NUC to work and it never did this. Just stayed on. Took it back home and is started again. Any suggesstions?
@clever mortar any idea where in the NUC Bios i can turn this off? wonder why at work it never displayed this behavior?
Not having a NUC... no
k
It's probably an Ubuntu Desktop setting though
k
Here , try this:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ubuntu+desktop+disable+sleep+mode
Best bet is likely one of the Ubuntu forums
k
Ubuntu desktop as a server 🤢
Maybe it's no a server... 🤞
So I have a NUC and running Home assistant on that, but looking at buying a NAS. So do I then sell the NUC and just use the NAS, or do I do both?
Depends on the NAS, and what you need it to do really
IMO use both, and the NAS can be the location of your local backups
Im unsure if running the service components on a NAS could be clever like sql, mqtt, influx etc since it got 40TB in raid and backed up every night vs running them on the hassio installation with that backup
Splitting the load is likely to have some benefit
Certainly I'd put Influx over there at least
Buy more NUCs and a few NAS is my recommendation 😛
any suggested docker stacks for tick?
