nope - only used UNMS & the controler a little

#diy-archived would be able to help you. If it has a known API then yes. Otherwise you'd need to flash them with Tasmota/ESPHome or similar

So, in general, since i do not know HA so deep, i was wondering if there is a way to connect these plugs (any plug) to HA if not by mqtt thanks to tasmota.

My production box... there's the WAF factor, plus also the fun that comes from Z-Wave and PyOZW causing HA to randomly core dump on startup

And a few months of too much going on

late gate
#

yeah I see that - my WAF is right now -1000%

clever mortar

My primary focus is on not breaking the family's experience - if it's not solid and reliable, it frustrates them

I guess with v 1 stability can start be a bit more reliable

clever mortar

Well, for me stable will come from separating Z-Wave from HA

late gate

true

I tried zigbee2mqtt, but that was a bad experience

That's been (mostly) solid for me

#

I think I need a firmware upgrade on the stick though

oh. my thermostats was not happy with that

I see a lot of work is done one 1.6 ozw python now

#

lets hope they will kick it the rest of the way

clever mortar

Yeah. I don't really care if they move to that or get Zwave2MQTT working with it really

late gate
#

I dont care eather, but both is on the old version so 1.6 is needed

or a whole new library

#

im not impressed by ozw

#

platforms like homeseer, do they buy licenses or something for zwave products?

clever mortar
#

Or, you know, have paid developers 😉

late gate
#

got a point there

#

I said it before. I have no issues paying for a HA branded zwave/zigbee hub with proper support up to 3-500USD

#

Also If I was a dictator I would make it law nobody could make hardware on 2,4ghz anymore - yes logitech harmony hub Im looking at you

unreal orbit
#

No more bluetooth, low level wifi, zigbee, or microwave ovens

late gate
#

rather keep that old stuff spamming on 2,4. New stuff should support a wider range imho. with 2,4 im thinking ofc about wifi, not zigbee, microwaves etc. The world would be a better place if 1. routers shut down the 2,4 if no clients requets it 2. people stop putting up 30-40db antennas etc

#

or idiots who put up esp-s that spam 2,4ghz ap points. A guy in the unify discord does this and he is acutally proud of it

And plug in a lan cable between them and have the old laptop copy everything you want to 10.0.0.2

Best particularly is meaningless - it's personal choice

#

Biggest too is largely irrelevant. If it does everything you want, who cares if something else does a million things you'll never use 😉

#

Personally, for the open source one, I'd suggest you download and install each and play with them for a couple of weeks. See which one suits you better.

#

Clearly Home Assistant is the best... at least according to those of us who love it 😛

icy cosmos

From what I could find: OpenHAB is older and more mature. But those articles are written 1-2Y ago. Did it change now?

Older != better
Newer != better

Home Assistant is more actively developed
OpenHAB is more stable

icy cosmos

True

clever mortar

icy cosmos

well you dont have to update

clever mortar

Some, but not while running

#

Upgrade time is interesting if you're not reading the release notes, or if you're hit by a bug that nobody else found

#

Z-Wave can be painful for some folks (like me) - there's an edge case with the underlying Z-Wave library that causes random crashes, but only at startup (related to corrupting the cache file, so you can delete the cache and it'll be fine)

Whats the difference between homeassistant docker version and hassio?

But beside that in Docker you do everything yourself, and I think in hassio you have a few "addons" which are docker containers theirselves too and you can just spin them up with a mouse click

But I still had to waste time going back to check.

boreal pewter
#

lol how is that possible to be unable to resolv the IP?

#

The Docker DNS is always up to date actually

clever mortar
#

(basically, there's been changes that may come as a surprise to those that specify the DNS servers)

clear ferry
#

lol it's been a time since I've cleaned up in my main linux instance that I have migrated around for 10 years

#

8GB in /var/mail

#

🤣

#

no wonder apt update failed with no space left on device

tawny pebble
mossy badge
#

So i bought a NUC and added 2 external drives with. Wave and zigbee2mqtt usb taking up the remaining two slots. Now I’m in need for more storage. What is the best way to go?

tawny pebble
#

@mossy badge i would buy a nas and free those 2 usb

clear ferry
#

Freenas 4 lyfe

mossy badge
#

Ok let me ask a stupid question then

#

So NUC has one Ethernet port. Let’s assume I were to use an Ethernet cable to ensure fastest internet how would I connect the NAS?

hushed basalt
#

Wah?

clear ferry
#

Erm, a switch ?

#

Like, your basic networking device 🤣

mossy badge
#

So I would need a switch right?

hushed basalt
#

Your router is a switch

clear ferry
#

You don't have one today ? you have only a NUC and that is connected directly in the wall ?

mossy badge
#

Been tinkering the last few days if I should go full Unifi.. my router is far away and not any space to place a NAS inside that cabinet

tawny pebble
#

@mossy badge go for Gigabit switch

clear ferry
#

gigabit, you peasant @tawny pebble LaughLUL

tawny pebble
#

@clear ferry gIgAbIT

hushed basalt
#

I don't even think you can buy 100mbit switches now

mossy badge
#

So that’s why I’m thinking of running one cable from my isp and into a Unifi switch. Then I should have plenty of ports

hushed basalt
#

Whelp

#

You need to plug the cable from your ISP into the wan port of your router

mossy badge
#

So basically you plug a NAS into a switch then from a random port into the NUC. And this will provide HDD speed and internet speed?

#

My setup today is a media converter for fiber-> zyxel router(isp provides) -> then I’m using airties mesh today.. but considering going for Unifi. But I’m afraid of dragging Ethernet cables all over the house. As I assume so have to glue it to the bottom of the wall

tawny pebble
#

The AP of Ubuquiti are incredibly good. I have the AP Lite and it covers the whole apartment and also outside of it. I get the signal until the tram station 50 meters away from my apartment :O

About the rest, yes, you connect everything to the switch and this little dude passes everything to the router. the Zyxel, in your case

mossy badge
#

Ok: I’m considering removing the zyxel completely .. but it is installed in the one side of the house and the on the opposite side I have a Ethernet cable. So I guess I would need two switches one on each side to be able to cable more than one device. Right?

tawny pebble
#

For a better wifi, one should use 1 AP for 20 devices connected. I read it somewhere in the unifi manual. But of course it must not be necessarily interpreted as a rule.. I'd suggest you to wire those devices you can wire, because cable is always the best choice

mossy badge
#

I live in 100 m2 over two floors. I have a mesh today where I have two out of three airties mesh cabled(speed: 500/500)

tawny pebble
#

usually you can not simply remove your ISP router. there are usually limitations. My ISP thinks this way and i'm forced to use their router

mossy badge
#

But upstairs I don’t have a cable so totally relying on the mesh wireless. I@ tempted to buy a nanohd and install it in the first floor and hope that it reaches the whole house

#

There is a large post where people have removed it. But it is tricky to ensure tv signals. But since we are only using the Apple TV. Then it is not a big deal

#

So my conclusion is: keep the ISP router( put it in bridge mode) connect the Ethernet to a USG into a Unifi 8port switch. Then having one cable back into this closet so that I still can have a cabled Apple TV on the other side of the house. Then wire the NUC, NAS, and an AP and just hang the AP on the wall

#

My main worry is that I don’t know anyone that understand these things and as you understand from my questions I’m totally noob

clear ferry
#

I pull one cable to each floor

#

and have a switch on each floor

#

everything goes to my garage core switch-cluster 🤣

mossy badge
#

Do you pull it inside the wall or outside?

midnight adder
#

woo two new smartplugs just came in

#

time to flash them boyyyeee

mossy badge
#

The idiots building my home placed this in the hall.. so it’s like opposite side of my house

clear ferry
#

All electrics in my house is on the wall, so I do the networking like that too

tawny pebble
#

ok i see, well it's simple stuff so luckily plenty of guys here can answer! i've been doing these jobs for a long time and wherever possible i suggest to cable the house. wifi is good and all but the cable is most of the time the best.

For cabling the apartment you don't need anything special. A switch and many eth. cables.
It's up to you if you wanna pass them inside the walls or do like me, outside the walls hidden inside canals.

I have a little rack cabinet mounted on a wall and here you'lll find the nas, the server, the switch and few other things. from the switch you pass the cables that will wire the apartment.

midnight adder
#

keep wifi to mobile devices, pretty much

tawny pebble
#

@midnight adder PLS which one did you buy? i'm so tired of reading internet and buy think that don't work

mossy badge
#

Only device needing Ethernet upstairs is my Apple TV there as well. Other than that if we have ok WiFi then that is enough for mobile

midnight adder
#

lemme get you the link of the plugs i own

#

i own uh

#

i now own seven of these

#

I only own the schuko model by the way so I dunno about the others

#

if you want silent switches, don't go for these, they have an audible thunk when switching the relay

mossy badge
#

@clear ferry what NAS are you recommending? Isn’t a NAS overkill when you have a nuc?

tawny pebble
#

@mossy badge if you buy the AP (access point) of ubiquiti, you'll notice they need the controller. You can also not giving any controller and they will work but you'll have troubles if one day you wanna change the SSID or network or these easy stuff.

A controller can be found in Home Assistant as plugin, so you can play on it! or also install it in a VM.. theres not need to use it. just to warn you. Beside this, these AP are the best in the market

#

@midnight adder I just bought them, again. because the first order i made a mistake and bought the 3 PIN version

#

1 hour ago i bought this exact one. And i was hoping that tuya-convert works

midnight adder
#

oh i own one of the 3 pins, by accident

#

that one isn't flashed because it worked out of the box with hass

#

but yeah it has that french pin sticking out so I only use it on europlug stuff

clear ferry
#

@mossy badge I run freenas, currently on a 4 bay self built ITX box, moving to a Dell R520 next week with 12 bays, and adding a 12 bay shelf to it later

tawny pebble
midnight adder
#

neat

tawny pebble
#

@midnight adder well im in austria so it's schuko everywhere. the FR plug works awesome here. The problem is that it's only 2000W and no power metering. that sucks

midnight adder
#

yeah

tawny pebble
#

@mossy badge or just buy a qnap or a sinology 😉

midnight adder
#

i wish xiaomi made a schuko version of their smartplug

#

because i am a whore for china

#

praise xiaomi

tawny pebble
#

but i fear no PM

midnight adder
#

thats bootleg xiaomi

#

xiaomi never released an EU version of their plug

#

its kinda like aliexpress has a fuck ton of "xiaomi economical brand" products that aren't actually xiaomi

#

they're just made to look like xiaomi's style

tawny pebble
#

and i thought"well also chineses have to wipe their...." so maybe xiaomi thinks about everything

midnight adder
#

(they are good pens though, I already own a few regular ones of this brand)

tawny pebble
#

a friend of mine bought them, or at least i guess it's this. he said the pens are really good

mossy badge
#

So your strategy is to run cable and then add a switch when you need multiple connection

midnight adder
#

i also own the official xiaomi pens but I don't actually enjoy their feel

tawny pebble
#

@mossy badge the other way round: have a switch and run cables when i need

midnight adder
tawny pebble
#

@midnight adder ever tried those pens with friction erasing?? awesome!

midnight adder
#

no

#

uhhh did twitter just die

so gotta go! see u next time folks!

i've been using this name for a good 15 years now

Could have been, I did do the irc

I remember a dude named Shrub if that rings a bell

¯_(ツ)_/¯ you probably recognised the name because i built the minecraft wiki from the ground up

Ohh I see

Probably it lol

midnight adder

haven't been involved with minecraft in like five years though

I was thankfully too old when Minecraft came out, I played a lot of quake and UT though 😛

Nobody is too old

Yeah I probably haven’t played much in five years

clear ferry

s/too old/worked 750 hours overtime per year 😛

I only play PS these days anyway, went through all uncharted games, all dark souls and Bloodborne and all Wolfenstein games the last few years

Need to find time for Sekiro at some point

I didn't really like sekiro a whole lot

i put it in the opi

So I went an got a AC Pro connected it to my router (isp). just to compare with what I already got

#

So I see the speed wise (fast.com) shows quite low speeds, but when I connect the cable it is 500/500

#

so is this just expected even when teh computer is just 1 meter away (testing..)

#

on my iPhone xs Im getting 200 when sitting 1 meter away

#

Upstairs I get like 30..

midnight adder

just broke a 32gb micro sd card while trying to eject it from my raspberry pi case

fuck life and fuck micro sd

clear ferry

I abandoned SD cards last year 😛

Don't use them in my phone either

I am now finally SD card free on my primary HA instance

sharp spire

what'd you replace it with?

clever mortar
#

A VM on an old laptop 🤣

sharp spire
#

ah that'd do it

#

I used to have it running on my PC but then I wanted something that could last on battery power for a while - been thinking about upgrading my storage on the pi

clever mortar
#

I'm not missing the Pi, that's for sure. I'd look at a old/second hand laptop with a battery still in reasonable shape

sharp spire
#

only laptop I have is this old powerbook and I don't think HA supports that

clever mortar
#

If you can install Debian/Ubuntu on it, HA supports it

#

Hass.io may be tricky if it's not x86

sharp spire
#

looks like the last python build for PPC was only 3.5

clever mortar
#

Ah PPC... yeah, that's likely to be an interesting challenge

sharp spire
#

it's currently making a shiny platform for my 3d printer

tranquil bone
#

Pi should be starting to catch up tho'. I went with a ThinkCentre Tiny 915m myself. They're not a bad price

clear ferry
#

I should grab @late gate old ups, battery power without all that laptop buggery 😛

clever mortar
#

Yeah, upgrading to a NUC or similar is on my to-do list, but the laptop is here now, and as I'm using Proxmox migrating hosts should be easy

clear ferry

Proxmox 🤢

boreal pewter

Deskmini build Tinkerer

Ok, a small compact form-factor PC 😛

Proxmox... isn't perfect, but it's free, and it works, and it's not VMWare 😄

clear ferry

It's not VMware 🤢

Et tu Tinkerer Et tu

clever mortar

I'm sure the current (free) version of VMWare ESXi sucks less than it used to

clear ferry

It does 😛

clever mortar

So, it's just 💩 then 😛

clear ferry
#

Only downside is they disabled the API in the free version

clever mortar

Honestly, haven't touched it since the days of 5.5, and I found the UI back then... "underwhelming"

clear ferry

The 6.7 vcenter is amazing in HTML5

#

Everything else is subpar

clever mortar

I may play with the free edition again at some point then, always good to keep the skills from getting totally rusty

clear ferry

Yeah the webui in the free version of 6.7 is tolerable

I prefer working on the cli of the hosts anyway 😛

@clear ferry will run windows me to host hassio

Help! I have been trying to figure this out for a week. I have brand new intel nuc with ubuntu desktop installed. After awhile I cant connect to nuc. I get a steady blue blinking light on the NUC. I then would I have attach a keyboard to turn on nuc. I have disabled on power , screen etc on Ubuntu. Here is the strange part . I took the NUC to work and it never did this. Just stayed on. Took it back home and is started again. Any suggesstions?

clever mortar
#

Steady...blinking 🤔

#

Blinking light usually means power saving mode

dusty gorge
#

@clever mortar any idea where in the NUC Bios i can turn this off? wonder why at work it never displayed this behavior?

Not having a NUC... no

Maybe it's no a server... 🤞

mossy badge
#

So I have a NUC and running Home assistant on that, but looking at buying a NAS. So do I then sell the NUC and just use the NAS, or do I do both?

clever mortar
#

Depends on the NAS, and what you need it to do really

#

IMO use both, and the NAS can be the location of your local backups

late gate
#

Im unsure if running the service components on a NAS could be clever like sql, mqtt, influx etc since it got 40TB in raid and backed up every night vs running them on the hassio installation with that backup

clever mortar
#

Splitting the load is likely to have some benefit

#

Certainly I'd put Influx over there at least

clear ferry
#

Buy more NUCs and a few NAS is my recommendation 😛

any suggested docker stacks for tick?
