But I didn't realize that there was no store doing the manual install, so I'm quite lost at this point. I don't understand why there are two forks of it.
You ended up not installing hassio, most power users prefer it that way.
I tried with the Hassio in the VM and that was the one that got stuck on the preparing page.
If I can figure out how to easily edit the config file, I should be okay. But I am unsure of how to easily do that at this time.
I tried another container using the following guide: https://gist.github.com/frenck/32b4f74919ca6b95b30c66f85976ec58 and it doesn't work. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong with hass.io.
Simple install command for installing Hass.io on a Generic Ubuntu/Debian machine - hassio_ubuntu_install_commands.sh
I saw that yesterday @hearty depot ๐
Same in Swedish.
The whole thread was epic on reddit

Hmm
You may want to bring it out of the sunlight. Remember the Raspberry that died from camera flashes?
Damn, were they studio flashs?
Nope. Just ordinary camera flashes. I think it was first revision of Pi 3.
Some chip which had too thin casing and caused a reboot when blasted with photons.
Oh lol
Same with the amazon dash buttons
I still can set them up with the app - pew - hopefully this ll not chnage
Ugh. You know you are a bit into the sensor things when you put the sensor into your pants just to check if its working
how many here are using time on making entiti names nice on hubs and other integrations, or rather make the name nice in HA?
I do 99% of the changes in the HA registry

Well google have shafted me, removing google photos support from bu&s
https://pypi.org/project/gphotos-sync/ seems to do the same thing tho, allowing me to drag all my photos off google onto my server
Anyone managed to the the Eufy Robovac intergrated into Home Assistant?
That'd be a #330944238910963714 question @mighty wyvern - #the-water-cooler is for (as mentioned in the channel topic) things not HA related
@woven furnace posted a message that is too long, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/krK6vNQbsJ/
Help: The World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN)is a GREAT addition, particularly for us in central Florida, on the Bananna River. So far, though, I haven't been able to get it to work. I see from searching the site that some others have an issue as well, but I couldn't find any fixes.
Keep getting errors:
Error while setting up platform wwlln........... Suggestions? Thanks
do you have the defaults ...plus this should be in #330944238910963714

Huh. That spotfy link crashes discord whenever Privacy Badger blocks it and I scroll past it.
hmmm
I need to start saving links, Iโm never in the situation to listen to things when Iโm pinged but I appreciate it

I have created my own discord server for linking to comments
aaah, finally had 30 minutes to spare so I could move back from untangle to pfsense
Aren't all the cool kids using NFTables these days?
hadn't even heard about it before you mentioned it @strange vapor ๐คฃ
@ocean mirage me and my SO have one for saving stuff, sharing stuff with each other, and home Assistant notifications
You have quite a relationship with your Superior Officer!
Yea she hasn't seen fit to fire me yet
Sir Yes Sir!
Oh thatโs a good idea
It's great specially since you can search, control what gets sent as a notification/sound, make mentions to get attention, etc
I'm tempted to use it for voice calls too, because cell calls are such low bitrate they're hard to understand
But she doesn't have unlimited data lol
Whelp
My wife has learnt that she can toggle lights in the study to get my attention
What have I created!
Gotta love over-enthusiastic security checklists. We have layer upon layer of security including properly run SSH CAs, Mutual TLS, Iptables and Security Groups, and we get asked if we can add TCP Wrappers....
As it turns out, just to satisfy a tickbox in a checklist which hasn't been updated since the 80s!
This is a UX & UI design review of the music notation software: MuseScore, which has become increasingly popular over the last few years. In this video I loo...
the musescore dev commented on the video and took the video well, i think he might be working on fixing the issues
Have any of you gone from google to alexa and visa versa, and how was the experience of switching?
@pure vine They're already wokring on a few of the issue, and have referenced the video in the Github issues ๐
yeah, they have already changed the logo
Only $17000 to install solar panels on my roof
๐ค
I'll do it for 16.999
But he promised to stop that, @light trout
I know ๐ฎ
@clear ferry what about my offer?
@boreal pewter NEIN
@clear ferry only $17000? That pays for itself*
*in a few decades
In 10 years with that power production
Do you still live that long? Weren't you with bill gates at school?
I'm only 22
Oh
You even were too old for a Gameboy!
I'm older than @light trout but younger than @clever mortar
Tinkerer is away for 20h 32m 8s with a message :point_right: Not here. There. Somewhere? Everywhere? ๐คท
Everyone is older then me, that's a flawed metric
I'm a quarter of the way to a century ๐
@clear ferry i used about 15k usd on solar. Selling for 15-20k nok a year so bearly worth it
And ur all oldies :p
Probably worth it alone for protecting your roof from needing to be replaced - very expensive
With solar it's important to not look at it backwards
First thing to do is to reduce consumption
So looking at your heating/cooling loads and figuring out how to reduce that
Ie insulation, air tightness, shading, curtains, etc etc
Then change your patterns to move dynamic loads to the middle of the day.
Nah I got solar panels now I can fuck the planet in every other way now too
ahead of the curve
So washing machines, dryers, air con etc on timers
Then you figure out that you actually need a much smaller system when you do that
Which is cheaper. Which means the payback period is reasonable
A lot of people just throw kilowatts of pv at their energy bill problem. Which means huge capital costs, and their usage patterns suck so they never actually use the PV for their big loads. So double whammy
My energy company tried to install the new meter the other day but we weren't home so its been delayed. until its installed they dont know how much I export to the grid it just ticks the meter back
so ive been at 1:1
I think I get around 12 cents I believe
6 cents is what I have heard from people in NSW though
We get around 6 in WA
I think ACT is one of the best places to have solar
Then if you import that kwh back you pay closer to 30 cents
Is your HVAC in homeassistant?
Once you get your data from your inverter you want to set up automation to try and use your excess solar
yes, but its very dumb atm, just turns on in the morning
Ie heater runs higher when solar is high etc
yeah I have plans to do that
it looks like the easier way is to load my solar details into pvoutput.org and then install the component for that
but I might be able to make a component that does it directly I guess
I figure I would want to do something like - if exporting to the grid and nobody is home and its after a certain time (or a certain time until sundown?) then run the HVAC
cause running it in the morning if nobody home helps nothing?
but I guess its much more power in the initial heating/cooling so maybe any excess is a good time to run
idk
If your home has good air tightness and thermal mass
You can use your home as a thermal battery
yeah thats a good point
its pretty airtight, well insulated
I guess I can always just play around with different methods and check my energy usage with my smart meter when they install it
a lot of variables though, and that might not be granular enough
Do you have any temp sensors
I bought a bunch of xiaomi temp humidity sensors they're great
I have one currently but I am still waiting on my ali order so I can use it lol
I'd sort of like to get some actually readings on each of my breakers but seems it might be a little annoying to do
isolating my heat pump would be nice
Apparently pretty well, which I was doubtful of too
I think I saw a video where a guy was testing them against proper gear and they were pretty accurate
I can't say its something I know much about though
This is probably the direction you would go in
I'm renting so it's all ๐คท to me at the moment
Wait nvm
That's just a blink sensor
yeah I was a little confused
I was looking at some esphome related stuff though
and also iotawatt, which seems a little pricier but possibly easier
That's probably good for me though. Except there's no power points in my meterbox :(
Openenergymonitor has been around for a while
yeah I'd have to get an electrician in too, and the cavity behind the meter box is super thin
might be a bit jank
As long as there's enough room to install the clamps
Worse case you can install something near the heat pump
Well and enough room for power plugs and stuff too I assume
But if you're getting whole house data from the inverter I'd put it on the backburner
but yeah there are thing you can attach at the heat pump end but if I am doing something I'd rather monitor all breakers
yeah ill probably just wait and see
I'd work on your whole house surplus management first
inverter has data and smart meter has data, hopefully I can use the meter properly
Then do individual monitoring after
probably wise
I might try putting a pulse counter on mine
If I can find something battery powered
How ironic that there's no power in the power meter
haha yep
I was thinking of doing the pulse meter as well, may have too see if I can rig up enough batteries/solar cells to keep a d1 mini operating continuously
Wonder what the heating/cooling effect of the panels over the roof (and I guess compared to the Tesla shingles) are on a house

so I just bought a house and moved this weekend :O. Now the fun can begin
I want to replace the switches and dimmers with something smart.. I'm thinking ZigBee over z-wave. Any recommendations?
oh i have no idea
What country?
US
You're spoilt for choice then
yeah that's been my problem
We have like two brands of ZigBee switches we are allowed to use
most of my existing stuff is zigbee and I've been much happier with that over my z-wave stuff
where are you?
Australka
ahh, bummer
Typo but I'm leaving it
and my house has a wireless gate, I wonder if I can do something there so I can just trigger it from my phone instead of needing to carry a remote
Most gate/garage door openers will have a dry contact switch
Basically two terminals you short to operate them
the previous owner left a ring doorbell in a box... but it's gated. what point is a ring doorbell if you can't even get to the door
Check the manual of your opener
hmm ok
I'll have to go look at the make/model when the sun comes back around
also i'm super excited to make a big garden and do some sensors for sun/soil/water
You'll probably just be able to chuck an esp8266 in there with a relay
Basically the same as a garage door opener
And you can also wire in an outdoor reed switch to the gate
oh hmm
To check if it's open
you know what's funny... i got three remotes here. Two are your typical garage door openers, one is the small remote for the gate
one of the garage door openers opens the gate
and the other does nothing
so i dont have a garage door opener at the moment...
well, i do if i go press the button
only 55 seconds late

that was easy
Sadly German - but the board looks nice https://www.heise.de/make/meldung/Rock-Pi-S-Alexa-zum-Selberbauen-4488607.html
It just hasn't no other usage than the title says and the title is actually misleading click-baiting because it doesn't tell anything about software components because there is no software like that yet as I know of
its just like an pi zero - debian 9 with a radaxs kernel
snips or rhasspy maybe
i like the size and I/O - just what I need
The size is compelling atleast
Right, I don't know of a self-hostable voice-control software which is comparable to Alexa or Google which use a few thousands back-end server, probably a few hundred employees working on it daily and improving recognition
Do u?
Yes, @hearty depot runs a company like that on his spare time ๐
Good that I don't work there ๐

How do I get a turkisch credit card ๐คฃ
would like to use spotify too
What, why do you need a Turkish one? ๐
The lyra is a wicked low currency - so when you pay in lyra your subscription costs is about 20%
I dont pay my employees well because there just isnt enough liquid mony around ๐คท you have to get creative ๐คฃ

and I also dont own a credit card - spotify says no to paypal afaik
I got a Spotify family account, costs almost the same as a single account and I can have five members, currently have me, my wife and ha on the account, nice for guest users needing music on my assistants
I pay Spotify via PayPal
๐ฎ
Done it for atleast 5 years I think
Neaat
lucifer in the same named series had a nice line on that one
somting like: Do you want to be happly greeted - get a dog . Want a box with shit in the corner - get a cat
Isn't spotify simply payable with PayPal? I used poland earlier so I got a poland PayPal and charged it from my german paypal
However 15 bucks for a family account is nothing
Exactly @boreal pewter
I already pay for Deezer atm
Haven't even heard of that ๐
French ๐
I've been using subsonic for my own stuff since 2005, so I was ahead of the streaming curve ๐
lol after Limewire and Bearshare became obsolet I used youtube-downloader, then I got a fetish on flac with an old iPod with Linux CFW and then I just got bored of always manually downloading music. That way you barely get aware of new good music
And then I have just chosen spotify
Yeah, most of the music I listen to wasn't on streaming services and some of it still isn't
I'm too far down the progressive rock rabbit hole
lol my hole is german hiphop - even if I get to old for this
I'm too deep in real dubstep and not the Skrillex mainstream shit. I listened that already 2011 when people still assumed I wear a broken transmission with me
But still I don't want that Youtube and Soundcloud quality
Lol, I can't listen to either of those genres, I listen to almost anything, but hip-hop doesn't interest me and dubstep makes my ears bleed๐
I'm tinkering again with automatic Git-Jenkins-Pipelines for Docker Containers and I just know I can't handle it ๐ฆ
I need to look into containers.. next year ๐
I know the feeling way to well ๐
I didnt even knew that WPA2 was easy crackable - now I hear bout DragonBlood wich let you crack WPA3 ๐คฃ
Sure, wifi has never been secure. With some patience you will always get the password
It was announced a few months ago I believe
I started working with wireless in 2003, and i was only one of few in my town who did afaik ๐
yea - and the flaw is so deam deep that you have to brake WPA3 wit WPA3.1 wich isnt compatible
I managed 55 primary and secondary schools, lots of networking stuff
There probably won't be a new secure WPA standard any time soon, and even if, before it becomes mainstream and everyone upgrade for several hundred bucks it will be unsecure again
And then again you still have dozens of devices not using it
Smartphones, Smarthome, Consoles, TV, Streaming Devices
There is a reason why the military doesn't use wireless ๐
too poor
I remember reading up on TEMPEST, where you can wirelessly read a CRT monitor from 5km away
my old scool network was realy well manageged - you had your own smb share - only thing you had to do - check what is the server - past the ip in the network and you had read access to ALL personal folders
That is why the Norwegian military shifted to LCD in 1999 I believe it was
And any Ethernet cable can be wiretapped, so they shifted to optical fiber cables with monitoring for signal loss in the mid 90s I believe for all clients
lol at least they learn fast - when I ceck up on the military of my neighbours (germany) I always get a laughing attack
Their office clients run wifi
My (IT) teacher had the admin psw on a Post-It under the mouse pad
When I worked with schools I can tell you 99% of the passwords were max 1m from their computer
nay - thats germany - its pinned on the wall
Screen model? That'll do, kids name on a picture? That'll do, under the keyboard? That'll do, their name? That'll do, name of the school? That'll do
Think we used 8char minimum with atleast one uppercase in those days
My passwords have all been more than 16 and alphanumerics since 2000, to avoid LANMAN hashing of passwords
"Sorry, but your password must contain an uppercase letter, a number, a haiku, a gang sign, a hieroglyph, and the blood of a virgin."
These days I generate 32char random passwords for each login, so I don't share the password on any services
Password generator offline, stored in a keepass database
I used hashes some monts back
where is your database?
Stored in my owncloud server atm, so behind two layers of authentication to reach it, copied once a day off to secondary and tertiary storage
And I never store passwords in a browser, so I copy paste for each login
I have never been marked on haveibeenpwned though ๐ and never had an account be compromised afaik
owncloud can also take care of the database - or you have to install a client on each machine? (wouldnt guess)
Yes, client on every machine
But keepass is cross platform, and supports fingerprint login on Android which is nice
Do you use the one click login though @eager trench ?
I stay away from those features
well - Lastpass - shure nice functionality - but a foring service
one click login? Fingerprint... can also use windows hello to loginto it
or you mean one click to trigger the browser?
in which case I use that
Yeah, to the browser
yeah I do...
@hearty depot lastpass has had many security flaws afaik
if you lose your roboform master password, not even God can crack in
less then the browser I persume ๐คฃ
good old bruteforce ll shurly do... in like 10 years
Never heard of roboform before though
really????? it's been around forever
So 2 bucks a month just to have your passwords in a app

I'm still waiting on an AliExpress order I placed on June 1. This is by the far the longest I've ever experienced!
I just did dispute for some orders from may ๐
Yeah I'm about to hit that dispute button. It's weird because it's 5 items i ordered at the same time all from different sellers
I am waiting on an order from may also lol
but its not at the estimated delivery date yet lol
Any of you guys use HA with your respective IR controllers as a universal remote thing?
I use the Broadlink pro and mini
I think mines the mini 2
but I think ill see how well HA works as a remote interface for my tv/receiver and ps4
just need to actually learn lovelace shit now I think so it looks good lol
I use it really well for tv/soundbar/xboxone
yeah it does. I use mine as my media hub. I bought the tv tuner for it so everything goes through the xbox
My TV is pretty much just a monitor
oh okay interesting
I mainly use my PS4 for plex/netflix
xbone doesnt get much use
I use WOL to determine the state of the TV and Xbox. There was an awesome custom component but microsoft killed the access to the smartglass api
thats not a bad idea
But I think there's a good PS4 component now that you could use
Yeah ive got a ps4 component which just controls the console once its on
using the second screen stuff that ps4 has
I dont think I can turn it on with it
looks like its gonna be cold this weekend Bloods, keep warm
Don't mention the temperatures otherwise atxbyea will judge us
Yeah heโll start regaling us with stories of his youth walking through the dark of day in metre high snow with no shoes on
except its 40 days without light or something
Iโve got my ecobee and smart vents to keep me warm. Expensive. But warm
Gas prices are highway robbery
I've got no gas line, just got my reverse cycle guy
we do have a small electric heater for the bedroom but sometimes I wonder if its not just a better idea to keep the door open with the heat pump on since they're that much more efficient
Yeah you told me what your power usage gets to lol
But I never turn stuff off, before I started using ha to do it for me ๐
My desktop has been powered on for 13 years, or since it was built ๐
And the server rack in my garage probably didn't help
So the heat pumps are the least of my worries
lol fair enough
I never used to turn my desktop off but its off a large majority of the time now
only really gets a little use on the weekends
I hardly ever use it, which is why I want to replace it with a triple monitor thin client
I run my work stuff in VMs anyway
yeah makes sense
If only the pi supported three monitors 1080, it could be done with a usb adapter I guess, but I haven't seen anyone try that ๐
If you never turn it off it never breaks, I guess
lol
well it doesn't seem to work in netflix or plex
like HA integration OR the PS4 second screen app
which is odd cause its just commands
I don't use it, I just have the PS4 in ha ๐
oh lol
it seems like a silly limitation
I am just imitating the controller as far as I know so I thought it'd work
I realise that physical remotes are probably better anyway but I just wanted it to work
learned some things along the way though
The physical remote is better, but when the baby falls asleep in your arms and youโre sitting in the โrightโ position and the remote is โover thereโ, and your phone is in your pocket. Priceless.
Also I watch shows with sound low/off and subtitles now
Especially when the ashes is on!
If I were watching TV and found a baby asleep in my arms I would be very confused
I used to write ha code on my phone via ssh when my daughter was 2-3 months and sleeping on top of me ๐
oh lol
Hi, anyone knowing when 0.97.0 will be released?
No, but the latest blog does
https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2019/08/06/home-assistant-cast/ should be today at some point?
"On August 7, Home Assistant 0.97 will be released. This release will allow launching Home Assistant Cast from the Home Assistant frontend. You can do this by including a new cast row that can be placed inside an entities card."
What I imagine whenever one of the mods is @ mentioned:
That is great! Waiting for a specific fix ๐
They aren't cats though, that would be is blue bastards rather ๐

any opinion on the best room to room presence detection via software (ble etc) vs sensors like fibaro motion detectors
As an alternative to HA built-in bluetooth tracking, the monitor script uses separate devices, usually Pi Zeroes, to track bluetooth devices.
It uses MQTT topics to relay device status messages to HA. See this forum thread for more.
someday ill bother to set that up lol
Hahaha - after I flamed bout Germany yesterday. Today the prove. ( Yes, we got choppers. No they can't fly)
evening, anyone know the best way to pull config files from a git repo after a fresh install of Hassbian?
should I delete the .homeassistant folder and just create a new one and clone the repo into that one?
git clone <repo> . ?
figured that would not be possible; cloning into an existing, non-empty folder... anyhoo, I went ahead and removed all contents in the .homeassistant folder, lets see how that pans out ๐ฌ
Should be fine. It'll put back everything that's missing on the next launch.
Does anyone know if someone sells really small smart locks
Like for this kind of indoor thing
Itโs less for security and more for โrules require we have itโ
So an insecurity lock is great
Electric strike would be better @rich tundra

Is there any way to the general usage statistics of ha? Like how many people are using component x?
With Google I only find solution for usage statistics of one instance ๐ฆ
If you're a developer of a component, you can ask the lead devs, but they've historically not exposed that information
Good to know! And yes, beside the general interest I would like to know how many are using my component. ๐
If you require a specific python module, you can get download statistics of that from pypi, but it's not a good metric for various reasons.

wow I didnt know its illegal to buy items that could contain a US zwave device to Norway. Illegal to use yes, but import. Strange.
Radio transmitters tend to be highly regulated, particularly when the government is using those frequencies
It's the same fequency as our emergancy brodcasts
Odd that they don't want interference there...
yeah. but still. It was a zigbee stick that got seized cause of zwave is illegal under it could be zwave
oh.. that's just them not knowing the difference, point them to google ๐
I did, but they said all sticks from US is illegal cause it could (note could) contain zwave
its like talking to a wall
lol
To be fair, they're just given a list of things
yeah I guess they are not techical
It's not like any of them even know what this Z-Wave or Zigbee thing is, other than a transmitter
Buy the same stick from ali
Which is why it's better to educate people
I have a us zwave device I bought off ebay
Delivered straight to my mailbox ๐
B-B-B-REAKING THE LAW
They don't check everything, if they did there would be years of backlog on imports ๐
Sometimes it feels like it is
hmm.. you started working for customs? ๐ค
@hearty depot if you can set the state of a input Boolean via Alexa, just use it as a trigger to cast on a device via an automation once they implement that feature.
Though... that's a #330944238910963714 topic ๐
Please take the time to read the channel topics
That's not really how channel topics work
Well it's just talking about ideas
๐คฆ

@hearty depot wasnt you wanting me to update you on ubnt radio's
Don't think so - but remembers me that I had an idea for my Vater in law and his fishing ponds. Atm to tired to rember ๐
0 am here.
But curios now xD
LOL just let me know ....I was supposed to update somebody ....cant remember now
Anyone know of a Bluetooth solar speaker set that is not a fake rock. I want a pair of Bluetooth speakers on my patio and donโt have access to power.
Oh yes, and I want to mount them to the ceiling over the patio so they arenโt portable
you are asking too much ...bluetooth ..no power .....and want to mount ...how are you planning for them to work
ok that will work as long as the sun is out
Obviously they need a rechargeable battery
yea
I realized it is asking a lot but that is my situation and if someone is doing it, they are amongst the HA community
yea no doubt but personally i would find a way to power from mains .....ie bad weather for a week ...it finally gets sunny and you want to go outside but batterys are not charged ...would be a bummer
I agree. But tearing out the siding and bead board ceiling in a brand new house isnโt an option
๐คฃ
no plug available anywhere?
Sure. Want speakers on the farthest point on the ceiling away from the house and the plug is on the front of the house.
damn ....no light close that you can splice into
Hmm....actually a fan. Never thought of that ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
there you go ....make a jb with plug or something
Jb?
junction box
Would still prefer the solar route. Will have to look at the junction box.....
well good luck ....without drinking a ๐บ with ya and looking at it ...hard to speculate
ofc ๐บ is most important part of equation
Any of y'all drone owners?
Bah I think I need to look at moving my home automation off of my too! Keeps running out of memory for some reason, between node-red, Hass, and mosquitto
Although now that I think of it I don't think I'm using mqtt anymore lol
I want to build a kubernetes homelab out of small form factor pcs
And move all of my home stuff there
Lol scalable cluster for hass
No I'm thinking maybe node-red needs its own pi. To justify buying. A pi 4 for hass hahah
Eventually you'll just end up with a pi cluster anyways :D
When I own a house I'm going to run PoEs to the wardrobes of every bedroom, or one Pi per common wardrobe walls etc
Plus one for each major area

Use them for 'edge' nodes for hard wiring things
Like motion sensors, buttons for light switches, reed switches, BLE tracking, etc
A raspberry pi costs about the same as a ZigBee light switch here. So it's not bad value
Then I avoid wireless for a lot of stuff, and only need to run one cat6 to each major area instead of 100 sensor wires
Then the edge raspberry pis would probably just send mqtt back to my central broker
It's also super dirt cheap when I consider I won't have to get an electrician in to change light switches too
Electricians charge.. a lot here
Especially since we can't do anything ourselves. And they know it.
8+ rapsberry pis, generic POE hats, cat6 wiring, poe switch ports, is still super cheap in comparison
I have thought this out :)
@clear ferry this channel is probably better. So, I watched the video! @slim vortex Interesting, it was exactly what one would need to start off and post flashing.
Only issue, really the only one, those were the easier steps. HA can't seem to be able to "discover" these sonoff-tasmota thingy.
https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/Home-Assistant
I read To ease Home Assistant configuration a feature called MQTT discovery is available. (warning: this feature is not included in sonoff-basic.bin and sonoff-classic.bin)
And guess what firmware I saw yesterday these devices are running?? :D
So, I guess I have to follow this: https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/Home-Assistant-โ-Manual-Config
Can you please confirm?
FYI, there's #551843800209686539 for these discussions
Is
There's a link to the Tasmota Discord server
Or you can have this kind of chat in #diy-archived where it's still relatively on topic
I did miss it, now joined! Thanks!
something not evil I am sure ๐จ
Make Norway great again?
But we never stopped be great
whats a Norway
basically the same as /dev/null
Meh, I'm starting to plan my trip to Houston, and I just remembered September is hurricane season, I guess I'll come the week the offices are flooded with my luck ๐
Business trip?
Work related yes
You've been to the states before right?
Yeah, only east coast though
east coast is where I would be interested in first too
houston sounds nice though, I have an internet friend there
I would enjoy 5-6 weeks on the road across the country
But I'll never get the wife along for that
I'd like around a month my first trip at least
maybe 3 weeks
doesn't sound cheap though
I've done three times a week, two times New York, once new jersey - Washington - Atlantic city - new York with my parents and sisters meeting our us family from upstate New York
The us is pretty cheap compared to other European countries
New York is expensive though
ah yeah cool
With new York tax on everything
I'd want to to NYC, Chicago, maybe Philly, Nashville
move on down
whatevers cool
and then New Orleans
I know a dude in West Virginia too lol
Me and you can go road tripping then ๐
but apparently most of that song is mentioning things that are just in western Virginia
heh
We'll stop by @dull chasm and dance in front of his outdoor cameras in the middle of the night
What state is that
Louisiana
near new orleans
me and the Norwegian are crashing at yours
i got a swamp cot
We can put beads on @dull chasm and watch him go wild
I don't know what that means but it sounds cozy
also I told a guy in Kentucky that if I go to the states I will fight him so I assume you got my back @clear ferry
Of course, I'm a fat bastard and look intimidating
where @clear ferry will sleep
I'll go gatorfishing with my fingers @dull chasm
I assumed we would all share your bed
my baby girl will bite ya
Arranged marriage!
Can we hunt gators
Have you see the show Swamp People? I assume thats your life now
should a says girls
some of that is filmed extremmly close to me and shelby is a good friend
I don't know the names of the people but cool lol
Keeping up with the Cajuns
oh him, cool
Now I want Cajun food
there is nothing else....there is other food?
You should Google some Norwegian delicacies
thats food?
not really
I'm not convinsed, but some folks here call it food..
Yeah, let's dig down a fish in the ground, wait a few months and dig it up again
T A S T Y
Silly Norwegians forgot where they left their fish and when they finally found it they tried to play it off as intentional
That's probably excatly what happened
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naAcOEDcwCk ๐ thats good food
Moose, raindeer, whale, seal are great meats though
are they aggressive?
Usually no, unless they are female and have kids
Usually they run (fast) when they see humas, they have probably heard stories ๐
We have stuffed ones ๐
But polar bears have been in my part of the country when they have drifted in on ice flakes in the past
Happened a few times
ah yeah
thats one thing that I don't get
Everyone on the internet is like "Australian wildlife is trying to kill you, scary!!!" but america and europe has fucking BEARS
get bit by a snake here you just go to a fucking hospital
Put it on the Barbie!
exactly
Then again the most poisonous thing we have where I am from is this ๐
Last hundred years 0 people have been killed by bear or wolf though
Snow on the other hand
And what is that
yeah I don't think I'd like snow either
but fuck meeting a bear, I'd take a snake or spider any day lol
Snow is nice, it keeps the ๐บ cold
Snow โค
Actually it snowed here tonight at the footy stadium during a game of AFL
it doesn't really snow here though
like it wont build up
My roadtrip moving south in 2007, about 1/4 way south ๐
Where the fuck is Santa
@ home drinking ๐บ
I've been living here 12 years, I should move soon ๐
just keep working your way south until you leave hell
But I wanna go north, I want proper snow ๐
If stuff pans out in Houston I will probably move North, that is for sure
going the wrong way my friend
Not when your body is so hot that you shovel snow in your t-shirt
I would die in Australia ๐
living in norway during the winter and australia during the sommer would be nice ๐

Donโt you guys get pretty warm in summer anyway
But also nah I donโt plan on visiting anywhere in the winter lol, screw that
It was our summer I was talking about
Then it would be nice beeing on the other side ๐
That would be a nice smart in wall display
Hell, I think it could even run HA
limited but yea and prolly costly and overkill
Hmm what would you guys say a fair price for a UniFi Switch 24 POE-250W is?
Here about ยฃ360 seems to be a good deal
Does anyone have a NAS that they bought complete that they are particularly happy with? Or is it always better to just build your own?
I hate my 3 consumer NAS(Apple, D-Link WD)
but my HA server with regular samba works grate (not too fast thou..)
Synology and QNAP get good feedback from those I know
@unreal orbit I loved my qnap for years, but my self built itx freenas is a good upgrade, but replacing it now with a Dell R520 for expandability
The old ReadyNAS range was good, but I don't know anybody with a current model
Villhelm Have a 8 disk QNAP ... still running smoothly ๐
Thanks for the input, guys. I'm mostly just looking for something to run a plex server and nextcloud. Maybe 2tb of mirrored storage if that changes your opinions
QNAP can do that
Then I would recommend a 4bay self built freenas, the qnaps are very easy, but performance is meh
And freenas has plugins for most stuff
I mean I'm only gonna have maybe 5 users, so performance doesn't need to be mind-blowing
No, but the lower end prebuilt ones are really low performance, and costly
I'm not opposed to putting in some work
I built the itx one for 50% of the price of a lower specced qnap
I like the idea of pre-builts but if it's that much of a cost difference then I think I'll just build my own and slap freenas on it
I paid 240ยฃ with shipping for the case with psu+mobo with CPU and memory
A similar qnap was ยฃ500
I have since added more memory so I have 12gb instead of 8
Your performance was dipping that much to justify upgrading ram?
I was thinking 8 would be plenty
It was when upgrading from 4x4tb to 4x10tb , zfs enjoys memory for caching
And 8gb is minimum according to the community
Yeah I won't have anything near that large for the drives. I think 4x1tb is what I'll probably end up with
I'll check that out @slim ore thanks
And a plex plugin also
Now for the age old question of rack mount vs desktop
and docker / virtualbox plugins
I've used them in the past - good selection of stuff
Shipping cost to the US might not be worth it ๐ฆ
Btw, if you want to see the messiest website ever
This guy had Norway's first post order catalogue, then moved to the internet
elbil, elatv, el-atv, atv, robot, mercedes barn, elbil til barn, el-bil til barn, drone, elsykkel, el-sykkel, el scooter, elscooter, el-scooter, rc helikopter, rc bil, rc fly, rc produkter
I used to order from his catalogs in the early, mid 90s ๐
Using a Synology DS918+ with 4x 10GB drives and 2x 512 M2 SSD cache drives. Just for keeping it simple I find it a better solution than my old unraid setup
Oh hardware raid is another thing I'd prefer
but if I'm building my own that shouldn't be difficult to research
Hardware raid is nice, but I trust zfs pretty well right now, so the Dell i ordered im flashing the raid controller to hba mode
So I can run zfs on all 12 drives
Yup, given a choice between data that you know is safe, or stuff that you're hoping isn't corrupt...
So you're saying you trust software RAID more than hardware?
Im not sure about others, but with todays download speed (1gb/s) here, I dont really need large raids anymore
Depends on what you're storing
Depends if ur a horder hehe
@unreal orbit Hardware RAID is software RAID running on a dedicated CPU
With the old hardware, that made a massive difference. These days... not so much
Well yeah, but adding some function separation seemed like a good idea to me
Fair point
Makes it painful to recover if your card dies though
Probably not such a big deal these days, but I've been there before
I've never had issues recovering a software RAID if the system failed
Yeah the case I'm currently looking at comes with a spare raid card. Which is.... not comforting
If anyone in norway im giving away a HP proliant 380 g7 if anyone wants it hehe
HBA+ZFS ๐
I have so many g7s in my garage, I need a gen8 or 9 ๐
too sad you didnt say that earlier :p

anyone know if a 800MA downstep (USB5V -> 3.3V) is enough for Webee CC2530 + CC2591?
ok, first things first. Awesome software.
Has no sense IMO if I understand correctly
going to upgrade to.97 then take another swing at it.
Alexa media, from all the posts here, is just a pain
Alexa media just plays media on a alexa device, correct? Therefor not sure if it has another use then maybe an alternative morning-alarm instead of a mobile phone
Tho I would even chose another alternative for that
want to use it to announce things, maybe implement a grandfather clock
voice output, as it were.
That should work
using alexa for voice commands, and tracking states via Hass, so seems to make sense to respond to state changes verbally
Yes @light trout
Iโm thinking of moving to the IKEA stuff for sockets etc and want to integrate them with HA whatโs the easiest way to get the Zigbee setu? Is it worth buying the IKEA hub or can I buy one of these zigbee sticks and run it off that?
I'm looking through an army of home automation open source software. How did you figure out which one you wanted?
Essentially, why did you pick home assist?
An army? Aren't there only like 5?
Can you list them? I'm curious
I was fed up with IFTTT, and having multiple apps, Home Assistant was the first hit on Google for my search ๐
And now you use nothing ๐คฃ
Shhhhh๐คฃ
I'm curious what features make home assist better then other ones
Probably None, better is subjective, they all probably do mostly the same just different
Customizability, it is actively being developed, easy to setup and maintain, community support is good (usually teaching through sarcasm and pointing to the docs)
And the amount of devices it handles
Is there a feature to connect a high gain blue tooth antenna of some kind and run a simulated android app? Bascially I want to connect to a blue tooth device that is normally controlled through an android app.
Depends on the device. Anything is possible, but only a handful of bluetooth devices are currently integrated
Define "better" ๐
oh, it has tile. https://www.home-assistant.io/components/tile/
doesn't say what having tile allows me to do though? Can i have home assist ping a tile?
Is there a voice controlled application that does not go to the internet for translations. For example, something like google assist but ran in my server.
no internet needed
That's a cloud based component, so it doesn't connect to the tiles directly.
Though there are other methods for passively checking for bluetooth devices
As an alternative to HA built-in bluetooth tracking, the monitor script uses separate devices, usually Pi Zeroes, to track bluetooth devices.
It uses MQTT topics to relay device status messages to HA. See this forum thread for more.
Was looking to connect to the device, not track it. Then tell the device to go off.
I was also interested in voice control that does not need a server on the internet.
There is a built-in voice assistant, but I have never used it and have no clue how it functions. You can dive into the component code if you want https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/tree/dev/homeassistant/components/conversation
Most people that want offline voice control use Snips
"Hey it's 2019...I'll give GIMP another try"
20 minutes later I want to jab a sharp pointy stick into my brain through my ear.
yeah it is horrible
Don't say that in linux discord
inkscape I can tolerate
If I was running linux on my daily driver I'd be using windows in vm with gpu passthrough
Windows as actually my favourite desktop OS atm. And I use windows, mac and linux every week
I'd use linux before I'd use mac by choice though. Except for creative software support
I wonder how adobe will fare now that generations of kids that might have had photoshop/illustrator/etc skills won't have them because they got so tight with the drm
Yeah I grew up on 'aquired' photoshop
14 year old me couldn't afford the four figures AUD just to play around
I think adobe will be fine though. Schools will still need to buy seats if they want any decent cirriculum for digital media
right? And now my 14 yr old knows krita and other things that I am marginally aware of
I guess there's nothing good in open source photoshop though
Just painting etc
And lightroom equivalents
Creative cloud is very cheap compared to the pain of using Gimp
Plus if you're in the industry you have to use industry standard software
Oh nice
It can be a pain figuring out what you want and what you could live with
knowing you it will have to be north facing and well insulated :)
enhanced-buzz-28895-1301694293-0.jpg (500ร349)
It's north facing
Nothing in Australia is well insulated
I'd have to get real stuff put in. Spray foam would probably be the only viable way
'Well' being relative
We have batts in the ceiling. Lots of Canberra places have nothing
I'll probably have to replace the roof
It's not in great condition
Definitely not worth putting solar panels on it before i replace it
Insulation in Australia? To keep the warmth out? ๐
I mean... yes
And the heat in
2 degrees outdoors is still colder than most people want in their living rooms
Too dumb to die
We get minus temperatures here but I am not sure I've seen a koala in my town
Just asking. Is this american thing to do?
is what?
Mostly for random chat yeah. Topic does say to keep civil and not talk about politics or religion though
This was in Bali, Indonesia
What are these guys trying to accomplish?
Actually he was drink alcohol and get drunk
Whats your point? There are retards all over the world.
Just share for fun. Dont mind me
No worries, just dont see why it should be "the american thing to do"
๐ค
Is it me, or is the CC2530 instructions overcomplicated when coming to driving it? I would say a more plug and play method is how I did it, but not sure why the official instructions so it with solder 220v etc?
Gave good results in conbee at least
Good news Everyone
You send each of us 1000 bucks?
I have my first computer job. It's a contract thing for 2 months where I make 24 bucks a n hour.
Sorry Anon. I'm not making that many fat stacks
๐ฆ
24 bucks without taxes?
Well that's before taxes
and since I'm an "independent contractor" I get to do the taxes math myself
\o/
Depending on the country, for germany that would already be good
Well my previous salary while working part time at an office supply store was 9.50 an hour
so I'm P happy
experience and monay
American saleries
I remember my first full time job, working in a grocery store 20 years ago, $15 per hour plus extras
Hourly pay... strange concept ๐
Yeah, I haven't had that in 20 years ๐
But knowing your pay per hour doesn't mean you get paid per hour
My current would be 43 i think, but with extras closer to 67 ๐ค
What in... French cars
From the phone talks I've had and the paper work. It looks Iike I'm paid hourly
lame.
So if I want to get paid like a normal employee. They charge a fee for processing it quickly. OR I can wait until it's been 30 days since and then get my money. as far as I understand it.

Yeah.
Well the important thing is I'll have experience
That's what I'm really after.
a friend of mine works with the same company at the client I'm working at. So at least I'll have someone to commiserate with
Experience is key for most businesses
Yeah. If I make it long enough I can get an entry level job
