Why not a DL580 in the back just for the hell of it
If you can fit it under the boot floor, it's fair game
"Har kun hatt bilen i noen uker. Selges da den ble for stor og vanskelig å parkere for fruen." That's a red flag 😛
His wife is a red flag
haha
It looks nice, has all the right equipment and low milage
I'll take a look and a drive
Then maybe buy
But honestly I find the volvos not good looking
The back looks like a truck Trailer
Anything is better than a ford or a French car 😛
Whenever I travel for work I specify "no French cars" 😂
BMW
Ford, is no longer as bad as it was
It and Vauxhall swapped places...
Ford - Found On Road, Dead
Last when someone crashed my car I got a completely New 2018 Mercedes C180 and I would never buy one
Only driven Merc sports cars (as hire cars) and been very happy with them - that was "some" years ago though
I also have a neighbor who offered me discount on New Fords, up to 28% but only 13 on a Mustang, didnt want them either
I've driven a bunch of new Fords, and to be honest, they're pretty good - not exciting, like a sports car, but still a very pleasant drive
Kia cars have been surprisingly good too - not like the old ones
But I somehow dont like any other cars than BMWs. I find the New GLA pretty, or a Volvo XC90, Mustang or even the Passat CC and Tuareg. But the interior kills each of them
The same to me with any car other than BMW
And the Mondeo was a squeeze for me, it was worse room in the drivers seat than my wifes Tiguan
I once tried to drive a Ka... that was "interesting"
Loool
A Smart 4x2 was better
Ford Ka is nice, if you are a Thai small person
My first car was a Twingo tho. But I had a friend who serviced it for me for free when I just started to earn money
But since I had a Golf, a 728i and a Opel Signum I Stick to BMW
I would love a 635CSi
My Boss has a 4-ish and an older 3-ish. I some day want a X4, awesome Feeling just sitting. But for now I wait for my New Mini Cooper :p
If it's half as much fun as the original, it's going to be a mountain load of fun
Which one you mean?
I have a old colleague who had 4 BMW alpines
I know one of them was only made 200 of or something
The original Mini Cooper 😉
You could hear the points add up on your license as you drove 😄
Oh I read not long ago of an ebay action in murica where an Alpine was Sold for 14k€ with an V8 and 400PS or so, New price was 100k+
Tinker I bought an Mini Cooper S Clubman f54 from 2018
Im 1.90m+ and feel well
I cant even put the seat full back because that's too far 🤣
I knew somebody who was about 2 meters and drove the old Mini
For me, it's more insufficient space for life
Family, dog, stuff...
I knew a guy who had to drive the Passat with the sunroof open to fit
Was cold in the winter
He was 2.12 I think
does anyon kno how to change keyboard mapping without using raspi-config (buster) ?
What would a ubiquiti solution cost with a router and 3 access points and the other stuff I would need in that ecosystem?
And where in the world are you?
Germany
Are we talking 500, 1000 or 3000€?
Approximately of course so I get some sort of reference
I headed smth about ubiquiti before, smth like a cloud key or smth. I don't know what it's used forgot if I need that or other things to run my network
Unifi USG (router) is about £115
Access points for AC are about £175
Cloud key is another £200
OK, I need to get to know that ecosystem a bit more
Maybe if my fritz stuff breaks down I'll consider switching to that or pfsense
Or Mikrotik
I love ubiquiti stuff
they have a very disruptive pricing model
and the ubnt controller is ace
and free!
I don't get why anyone would pay cisco prices for something that stops working it you stop subscribing (meraki)
What's the benefit?
Why would I choose ubiquite over a common WiFi Mesh network?
The wider ecosystem
It's more than just Wifi
Also, wired backhaul over WiFi always
anon - for home use or simple networks then maybe not so differential
but I still put in ub switches and use the free cloud controller for maintaining them
I know folks who switched from generic mesh to Ubnt and haven't looked back
for managing a number of APs and multiple SSIDs, and switches etc.. its great
and free (the management of them)
the devices themselves are competitively priced also
are they any smart wall sockets (uk) available ?
all the ones I can find are not available anymore
Is there no Osram available with UK plug?
Osram what?
Looks like UK plug...
Oh, strange European thing
anybody know how i hook up sonoff tosmota flashed tuya power plugs to home assistant?
#551843800209686539 can help there
Yeah time for brexit :p
Did you read the link in it?
yeah joined it
Ewan the dream sheep + raspberry pi zero + Google assistant = Shepherd's Pi . Powered by raspberry pi and smart assistant control - https://i.redd.it/s4jcoc0l35a31.jpg
@willow hull what's a ubnt controller?
ubiquiti's controller software
web interface - manage all ubiquiti kit
ubnt is short for ubiquiti networks I think
OK, so something like a dashboard with a bunch of overviews then?
yeah
Ok
and full configuration of everything
switch port management
firewall management
wireless estate management
etc...
Do they offer 10 gbit switches as well?
Yeah, but not as cheap as Mikrotik's
I've a site with a bunch of netgear 48 port switches that I wish I could replace with ubiquti
Well, I don't know, really hard to to tell if I'd need it right now, as I don't have the hardware yet to support those speeds 😅 but good to know they have something for the future 👍
If I've got the time and money I'd like to rewire our house
Got 100 meters of cat7 already at home
But that doesn't get you far 😅
Thanks guys for all the info 👍
10g, what is this, 2008? 😛
Quiet you
I need to put 10g in between the edit suite and the new nas at work
I think I've deciphered the labryinth that is sfps and optical media
My understanding so far is that I want SFP+ LR LC modules with LC-LC SM cable
Bi directional transceivers aren't what I want for internal cabling. Only links over street fibre etc.
I don't want DAC because, it's more expensive and it's copper. And I don't want AOC because I can't different modules on each end for compatibility and the cables are harder to run
Any thoughts @clear ferry
nest and google assistant confused me, I thought home hubs etc... where now nest hubs 🤔 but I just got an email from Belkin saying Wemo nest integration was ending and Google Assistant would still work 😐
could be just me, but i've noticed lately there are components/integrations with instructions to set up, but not how to call the service? (like this: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/google_cloud/) is that new? or is there somewhere else to go to know how to call the service?
Ordered these before the sale. But oh well not my money. Man it takes forever to get things to Australia
ahh okay fair enough
Basically when we shoot a job we just back up the footage for a couple of weeks after we give it to the client
For when they inevitably loose the drive
yeah makes sense
@hushed basalt optical is always preferred, but LR and SM is the more expensive option, how far is the stretch?
Really? Traditionally LR is 4-10x the price depending on distance required
This is just short range
10 metres by cable from one room to the other
$26 for SR and $34 for LR
If I could be certain the compatibility would be fine I would just go AOC so I don't have to worry about dust
AOC is a good option for most, unless you have switches that are bitchy
No switches? Just point to point?
Point to point
Qnaps inbuilt sfp+ to a HP NC523SFP
For $60 it might just be worth a punt
Not my money also :D
Ha, yeah, you'll probably be fine
Most NICs are all eating
Except intel chipsets
That is hpe cards that the middle number is 6 for
You don't even want to know what our 30 metre thunderbolt 2 cable cost us
And it died after a few years
ROFL
30 meter thunderbolt, I didn't even know that was a thing
It can't be worse than the 1m NAD cable
Was Denon
Nice, this flight has Wifi so I might actually get some work done
and by work I mean send out one of my this is music you should listen to to my collegues 🤣
thats pretty
PUT IT ON THE BARBIE?
oh no
@clear ferry get a new car
I am going to look at it in 5 hours!
Still this strange Volvo?
Yes, I like it strange
There is a Swedish saying about pimping a Volvo, You can put makeup on a pig,but it is still a pig
Oh you mean you can get the people out of the ghetto but not the ghetto out of the ppl
But the Swedes are weirdos they can start driving at 14 if they drive an Epatraktor, that is any car, with the back cut off and the engine limited to 50kmph
Like this
And in germany you need a licence plate and pay for insurance if you want a e-scooter and even that has to be limited to 20km/h 😛
AND you have to drive it on the street or on bike-roads if they exist

Our ebikes are limited to 200w 25kmh
Or 250w but with pedal assist only
Why is bicycle adoption so low in Australia 🤷
That’s a ute @clear ferry
Also the fact that you can't get a decent electric bike
Want to tow a trailer of groceries around, nah sorry 250w only. Want to get to work quickly. Nah sorry 25kmh.
In most cities here aren’t you not allowed on footpaths either?
In Canberra they’re called dual use paths 🤣
Yeah you can in Canberra too but we have so much space
Easy to go around pedestrians
Wait
Yeah in the nations capital!
Do you Canberra bro
Yeah I CBR
Do u even bru
Shared paths is what tccs call them afaik but idk
Yeah something like that I heard about it years ago when I got my traffic controller permit for emergency evacs
First other Canberran I’ve seen on discord
Shared paths arent footpaths though
Footpaths are just the normal things going past houses
Oh actually yeah my girlfriend used a similar discord
Shared paths here are usually quite deliberate cycling routes
Pokémon go Weston, when we lived there
Oh yeah maybe true here telco
But they’re treated exactly the same as other paths here
Your face is an asphalt
Oof
:D
I wonder if I should just set up a recurring order of one zigbee device a week
One can never have too many senzors
6 months later
Toilet cistern, 21.32 degrees.
Toilet roll holder, 21.33 degrees.
Lol telco
I am still waiting on one of the bits to use that zigbee workaround thing
ordered from aliexpress
What the workaround thing?
https://github.com/Koenkk/zigbee2mqtt this thing
use 'any' zigbee device from one hub
Oh yeh I use deconz/raspbee for that so I use a bunch of different zigbee brands
oh okay cool
This was the first thing I found, seems popular
Right now I only have my aircon on HA via a broadlink mini lol
The mini is good. Solid device
Yeah need to get some more automation stuff going
Get my solar panels connected to HA
Can’t wait to get solar. I have whole house energy monitoring
I have a zigbee plug and thermometer/hygrometer I want to get working so I can control the humidity a bit better
ah yeah by which means?
Ah okay, I wasn't familiar with that one
I was looking at stuff like iotawatt and another one but I will be getting a smart meter from actew soon, not sure if I will be able to get any use out of that
only getting it cause I got the solar panels a few weeks ago
until its installed I am getting 1:1 for my solar since it just ticks the meter back lol
I would mount your block
🥁
Thats the zigbee guy?
Yah
Thats the piece I am still waiting on
Debugger flashed for ZigBee2mqtt
its been a very long time but not to the estimated delivery date yet lol
didn't really pay attention when I bought
The debugger tool is like four times more expensive than the module
Not a bad idea, cause you will be waiting lol
I'm also waiting

Moved my HA install to a nice new Rackmount box up in the attic. All good except for one problem, it's in a rack which seemingly happily blocks ZWave!
Happily, I found a cheap ass china goods tech shop nearby which does 9ft USB extension cables 😄
I ordered a long usb off amazon to get my zigbee out of my rack
Fun fact, Ikea switches have crap signal strength
Have an Hue Hub mounted where it's relatively hidden in the hall. Working a charm since I moved it there. Two bulbs which were showing up as unavialable a lot are now working perfectly
If it was up to me I'd be hard wiring as much as possible
Shame everything is cheaper on wireless
Ethernet is too heavy duty for sensors and the like too. I'd need to look into some sort of bus wiring
@hushed basalt I think it's in John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" series there's one book where they're trying to stop all radio signals to stop their radio's betraying their position, and it's stated that their tech has progressed to the point where everythign within their tablet style computers is communicating wirelessly as it's cheaper.
ie, not even traces on the board!
Haha
Reminds me of Battlefield Earth
Hubbard was a nutter and or a sociopath but he was a half okay scifi writer
They have fake circuitry on the board and hidden circuitry inside it
I guess what I'm trying to avoid is batteries so much as wireless
I have a couple of Aeotech multi-sensors where I've run ethernet cable through the attic to above them. Then I have these handy little POE to USB adapters which work surprising well.
24port POE mikrotec swithc with plenty of PoE ports to spare.
I think theses are the ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ANVISION-Splitter-Adapter-Compliant-Raspberry/dp/B079D5452Z/
I've thought about those sort of things for google home minis
So poe to ethernet and usb micro, then another combiner for ethernet OTG on usb
To run ethernet and power to a home mini in the ceiling or wall
When I get a switch I'll probably get the miktrotec one with 4 x sfp+ and 24 x poe
That's the one I have, and it works a charm.
Not the biggest fan of their UI, but manage it mostly via Ansible anyway
Mmm ansible
I'm itching so badly to just drop some money on 3 or 4 optiplex sffs
I know you can virtualize a homelab cluster, but there's something extra about real nodes
Man optical stuff is so cheap compared to film and tv cables
It's not uncommon to see cables $200-$300 for 6 inches between a camera and a lens etc
A cool $365 USD
Thats becuse its got canon on it
I use Ansible and Terraform extensively at work, so using it to manage the silly amount of services I self host seemed like a good idea 😃 Worked out well recently. My primary mail server died badly. Put in a replacement, ran Ansible against it, restored some Mail and DB backups, and all was good!
I use ansible on my linux desktop
Although I've given up on linux as a desktop recently
Gone back to windows,
@hushed basalt check out the optiplex micro form factor systems. they're really nice
assuming you don't need any pci-e slots or optical drives
I was thinking second hand
And a pcie would be nice for potential nvme or 10gbe upgrades
I half a half height rack so space isn't a huge issue :D
mhmm.. Lost one of my smart plugs.. I can control it.. but i cant find it
aah 😄 its my fridge 🤣
Something that annoys me about the alexa is that you can only have 2 adult accounts
@clear ferry where is the new car?
It's here now, I'm driving it home😛
Oooo what car you get, @clear ferry ?
Nice! I just got a 'station wagon' too!
He gets the baby of a combi-truck trailer pregnancy
Now to drive it 9 hours home
There's an app for that
An integration even? @hushed basalt
Right, how to integrate a Mini with paid Remote Services (app control of the car) 😄
Would you like to avoid tolls, motorways or the French?
Rigging that would probably take more than 9h
Driving is soothing
Yeah I don't mind driving either unless I am a little tired at which point it is too soothing and I might fall asleep
I don't see no alternative to driving for anything regarding local activities
Startrek: "McGivers speculates that the ship is a sleeper ship, designed for long periods of interplanetary travel due to the limits of space travel technology in that era until the year 2018."
I was promised warp travel by now!
Fun fact. We had men on the moon before we had wheels on luggage
Driving 40k km a year is soothing 😛
allegedly* @hushed basalt 😉
lol just checked the BMW connected drive component and the region setting is funny
Oh no, the only FM channel still in operation here is a Christian one, I have to buy a cd
Hits for kids 232
Wouldn't it be nice to have a taxi drone pick you up from your door and zoom you along to work
I don't think they sell much prog rock at the gas station though 😞
Three times faster than your current commute now
No traffic lights, no other drivers
Just a microservice mesh of cars
pass
How many horse and carts do you see on the main street now? :P
There we go, got 2 automations for hot water temp notifications based on HSE guidelines
Dont paint ur house white :p
White at least reflects the light and heat - if you'd painted it black... that could have been "interesting"
hehe yeah. thats the good thing, but makes interessting sensor readings
oh look, my sensor melted
well the alternative was to fry inside I suppose 😛
Just paint your house with reflective paint and enjoy the neighbors
I dont like the neighors anyway :p
Perfect!
@clear ferry is the radio in the car a bare basic one
@pure vine very basic, think I'll replace it with a 2din android device with Bluetooth and DAB
Maybe I'll even get one with wireless parking sensors or wireless camera
How good is DAB in norway, its kind of terrible here as all the operators want to cram stations on to their multiplex's meaning the quality is kinda bad
We only have dab since the government sent all our fm transmitters to Africa, the quality is ok, but very compressed, coverage got good after two years @pure vine
@midnight adder buy in wall Shelly and install
i rent so i can't just go and replace sockets
Buy a house!
i'm not a boomer
Are you a goblin weapon smith then?
IIRC when we had a hire car with DAB, its currently awful in wales, even internet radio would work better than DAB now
Same challenge in large parts of Scotland
Mind you, those are usually the same places that have no mobile signal...
It used to be that in wales, but the welsh goverment seems to have funded better mobile internet, so there is internet most of the way apart from in the mountains near aberystwyth
Yeah, I was driving around Loch Ness the other week, and the signal there often vanished
Mind you, when the "horizon" is about 40 degrees up 🤷
Unless you with a Virtual Provider as they dont seem to have access to the long range 4G
i think that one is LTE-800
that has less bandwidth but better range
I Stream 99% of the time in the car anyway, so mobile coverage > Dab coverage
I love driving in England though, Wales was very pretty btw
Lemmie go grab my rtlsdr
I need to go driving in Scotland, the wife even said she wanted to do that too
This is why i needed to grab it https://www.welle.io/
Oh cool
Starred @clever mortar
this is a screenshot of that software
look at what they use for broadcasting
and here is my Unis Student radio partaking in a ofcom local trial, and they have a even lower quality
And here is BBC radio 3, who normally are one of the higher quality BBC stations, at a very low bandwidth too
So yeah, the uk has kind of squandered the opportunity of DAB on cramming stations
Global radio is even worse
Rutger is dead?
I saw kodi tweet something
yeah
He's looked dead for 10 years, but it is a shame
But the end question is, do Androids dream of electric sheep?
I'm pretty sure they might at some point
like tears in rain
It is a wonderful film, and the filming and quality still holds up today
Yup
A wet cyberpunk dream
I've started reading the neuromancer series, but I haven't got very deep into the first book yet, I need a vacation
Ive noticed that alexa has gotten better at dismissing accidental triggers
other way around on german
even the grammar got worse 🤣
I should build a smart device that responds to Ach ja, Helga
I mean I was watching a linus tech tips video and james said something that triggered alexa and even before i had a chance to dismiss the trigger, alexa had noticed that is was accidental
Buy it on Amazon - http://lon.tv/ds419 (affiliate link) - Synology's DS419slim is a tiny NAS designed for SSDs and 2.5" SATA laptop hard drives. While it doe...
Go big or go home 😛
@clear ferry HP 3PAR and work up?
Atleast a 20000 R2 or bigger
Hey team! Looking to buy some Ubiquiti stuff for my new place and replace my router. Stugging between the Ubiquiti Secuity Gateway or a EdgeRouter. Thoughts?
Had both - did send back the usg after I only needed a router (isp modem set to single user) but I miss some features from the usg like "simple" vlan
Ahh, thank you @hearty depot - I may get the USG - the only thing that is gearing me towards it is the interface haha
Give me pfsense any day 😛
Nah, nftables!
ipchains!
Quick Showcase - Inside Manjaro Linux WebDad Community Edition and Jade ( Just Another Desktop Environment ), built with Web Technologies, HTML, CSS, Javascr...
interesting
Yet another distro
someone should make a distro called YAD
Lol
I gave up on the linux desktop
I run ubuntu on my surface pro 4 because it's too old to run windows 10
But went back to Win10 for my daily driver
I haven't... microsoft went full EVIL
surface pro 4 because it's too old to run windows 10 october 2015 is too old for windows 10 (2016)??
At least I don't have to sign my own kernels to get the touch screen to work
Haha yes well. 4gb of ram
Soldered
Might as well be 4 megabytes of ram for windows 10
wait... the SP4 is "Too old"? it's barely 4 years old!
oh, you cheaped out... got it
even in Linux I find 4gb unvearably restrictive... 6 is the dead minimum I will consider for a usuable experience. 8 if I'm buying new, and 16 for anything that I plan on actually doing WORK on
If it was still on windows it would of just been down graded to a kitchen tablet or something
My M3 SP4 is still working about as fast as it did when it came out. Which is surprisingly fast. Can even do some heavy layer stacking in photoshop. The touch display developed major issues 1 month out of warranty and has to be disabled in device manager though (dead strips and random false touches). Never buying one again.
I never buy non-enterprise grade laptops anymore... most of my fleet are old ThinkPads that can still dance circles around most newer consumer grade crap
my baby workstation is an HP EliteBook 8570p. it has an i5-3360M. 16GB of ram, wireless AC, GSM, and more USB ports than many modern Desktops
my other laptops are 2 T440 and 1 T450, and I have 2 docks and 2 PSUs for those 3
Yeah I've done the enterprise laptop thing a lot
Ultrabook styles are a bit harder to come buy
Corporates don't buy them as often
true
I do get a lot out of my sp4 still though
It's my only laptop. And i study on it, run VSC, etc
I wouldn't want to carry a T550 in my backpack that's for sure
Chromebook 4 lyfe
Weell I love my chromeboot - but thats thanks to GalliumOS
Can you run visual studio code on a chromebook
I don't know, I avoid coding, whenever I try I make God (ludeeus) cry
Yeah the most challenging thing you data centre jockeys have to do is not point fibre in your eyes
If you only knew the stuff I do 😛
That’s how you absorb the data though
Over engineer and under deliver,
That's the infrastructure way!
Found your new blades
Move over Dell, HP, Supermicro
Apple is here
Lol
I'll stay with proper hardware 😛
ApPlE iS tHe BeSt
Appie
Afaik I am the only subject matter expert for HPE blade servers in EMEA
Imagine being the only subject matter expert for iMac Pro blades in the EMEA
It's funny they don't have them plugged in
The cables would be a shit show
is it a point having overcomplicated ssid passwords when it can be easily brute forced anyway?
Define easily brute forced , and with what algorithm 🤷
@clear ferry how is your truck trailer kiddo doing?
@late gate please inform yourself about brute forcing and how password security increases the brute even up to million of years
That is like weeks of docu around the internet
Surely it would probably be more power and space efficient to run macOS X in a VM(it is possible, a ton of scripts on github for it)
than to use 3 iMacs in a custom mount
Even I run osx in virtualbox for testing purposes 😛
@clear ferry how is your truck trailer kiddo doing?
prittey decent - thanks to the AC thou..
I will see how I get home with the motorcycle, will be a fucking pain. Waiting for those car driving fucktards honking at me for driving between the cars to get as soon as possible away from holds
Nice cool breeze going through Dublin. Very comfortable out!
Sensor at front door at home is reading 21c
Sensor I have says 29.5
AC ftw. Got 13 turtoises outside though they love it
Pfft 31
Aww shit. $100 Sonos speakers by Ikea.
https://www.sonos.com/en-us/symfonisk-by-sonos-and-ikea
Sonos and IKEA present SYMFONISK, a range of speakers meant to democratize the dream of a home sound system. Combining our expertise in sound and technology with IKEA's knowledge of furnishings, SYMFONISK fits seamlessly into the home to enhance everyday life through listenin...
Airplay, no Cast? 😦
I heard they where planning that through twitch RPG
pfff 34 in culiacan, Mexico
@odd hill some reviews coming out today, it'll be released on the first
the lamp is supposed to sound like a play 1
@solemn moon I'm honestly surprised as fuck that those two partnered up.
Personally, minus the seamless whole home mesh component, I just see Sonos as Bose v2.0. and by that I mean overpriced plug and play for people with too much money and not enough sense.
And I can't imagine that the price won't drop below the initial MSRP at some point.
So if you're talking about being able to pick up basically a play:one for half the price...ok. Now you have my attention.
I do think it will be at a lower price, thats just the IKEA way
Play:one is anywhere from 120-150. This thing is launching at $100. So yeah. It'll come down. And then sales. I figure in about 6 months you'll probably be able to scoop them up used for like $50.
Looking to sell a $70 USD Shelly coupon code for $60US. in it dont sell ill order that nice camera they just developed.
My point was more that as long as Google (et al) make a ton of money having a walled garden (i.e. Nest), others will continue to do so (e.g. Ecoboo, Samsung, etc). Some will try to go the open field route, but most will first try going the walled garden approach, try and get you to buy into it. It's very hard to convince public companies to have more open ecosystems
oh. they won't.
just like all of these morons like CBS and Disney pulling all their content into their respective walled gardens is already making piracy spike back to pre-netflix levels.
there's nothing amazing or unique about the Nest offerings besides aesthetics.
their temp/humidity granularity is fucking trash.
Lol, we've certainly hit peak streaming service... no one wants to handle that many logins
their api was cloud based and i don't think they have the same definition of "streaming" as...well anyone.
Speakers are expensive though
Like if you want to diy
So those sonos ikea things could be interesting
- Minimum speed 60mbps :/
That your mob @hushed basalt ? 🤣
In all honesty though you sound like a good telco tech
Ha no I'm out of telcos now
Too bad they need good help 😆
And then they allow your phone number to be stolen and just go 🤷🏻♂️ when you need help! And not to mention how toothless the ombudsman is
Aah, in Sweden doing service on one of my cars, listening to the home assistant podcast 😄
is there any conference about HA? I want to learn systematically platform
I don't fully understand these smart/learning thermostat things like
couldn't it just be software
hm, do you have an example @ocean mirage ?
Well like you have those nest 'learning' thermostats right, and similar things
learn your schedule and adjust based on it
but all solutions seem to be pieces of hardware you have to buy, which makes sense if its the only thing that you have, but heaps of people are running other devices so it makes sense to me that you could solve this as an app/plugin on whatever device you are running home automation with
right?
I could be misunderstanding how they work
aha, I see, yes, you can do a lot of the same with influxdb on your own
and discover the patterns yourself
that is just propitary cloud data harvesting..
ah okay, so it become a semi-manual process?
I just expected to find more software dedicated to just this
I'm pretty sure you can do get it more automatic with grafana \ influx and some other stuff, but I haven't worked with it 🤷
Fair enough, I'll look more into it for now
I mean for the most part my heating/cooling will just be simple automations and manual use outside that schedule which I am probably fine with
Just turn on before I wake up and maybe some stuff to do with heating the house if I am generating more power than I am using
thats simple, but I'd be interested to see the learning stuff
yeah, you can smartify it pretty much without learning
I am going to get my heat pump in the attic to turn off when there is no occupancy upstairs (I have an office there) and the downstairs heatpump to turn down during night
ah, spotify sends me back to last summer, it appears I listened alot to "The Book Of Mormon"
I listen so much to musicals my wife says she doubts me sometimes 🤔
I assume most of the year you need heating even when you aren’t home so that everything doesn’t freeze?
well, right now we have 28-35 centigrade across the country
Damn sounds warm for you guys
winter is somewhere between +5 and -45
I’ve never seen under -7 and that’s a really cold exception
in my hometown, which is by the coast, if we get -12 I would kinda die, I now live inland and -35 doesn't bother me
Looks nice in the winter
The climate data was quite interesting even for me to see then umbers
december sunshine hours == 0, june sunshine hours == 221
never seen the actual numbers, we just live it
lol makes sense up there but funny to see like that
also yeah thats a handsome city
we do however have sunlight 24\7 to be fair, but the calculation is probably not made for us 🤣
The midnight sun occurs from about 18 May to 26 July, but the mountains in the north block the view of it for a few days, meaning that one can see the midnight sun from about 21 May to 21 July. Owing to Tromsø's high latitude, twilight is long, meaning there is no true night between March 27 and September 17.
I grew up with it and my sleep pattern was broken my entire life 🤷
I've lived south for 12 years now, started sleeping good two years ago 🤣
it is quite strange for anyone who has never seen it I reckon
I would say so
so when we are kids we are usually outside until long in the evenings
and as teens we are out all night
I ordered those transceivers
probably worse is the winter, no sunlight at all, so the suicide rates are high
I ended up just getting SR with LC OM4
Oh yeah that makes sense
The AOC cables wouldn't have shipped until 6th of September
SR should suffice a lot, LR 10KM on short distance can actually be worse because it will burn your transcievers
Who needs attenuators when you can just make them from couplers :D
Just snake them through a 24 port patch panel back and forth
I do miss working with fibre
Splicing is a bitch though.
Not so much the fusion, but stripping and cleaving and laying in joints
Winter depression is a thing here and we go from like 14 hours daylight to 10 hours
So Norway would be much worse
Plus the depression of being in Canberra
Amen
Legit though I love Canberra to live in
For the most part at least
Not many music acts come here is the main drawback lol
@ocean mirage from around 3.30 you can see how much darkness we get in summer https://youtu.be/AgBz4cMPBVc
A year long collection of webcam shots time lapse showing an entire year of tromso viewed from a hill overlooking the bay. All images are taken from http://w...
Hey we can leave
Old lovecraftian deal with sea creatures
But only to Sydney which I wouldn't say is a good deal
Oh btw, if you are interested in ludicrous snaps from an it madman my Snapchat is the same as my handle here
It's either usually work related, music related or just mockery of bad drivers
You are too old for snapchat
@ocean mirage CBR! "Feel the Power" as our number plates used to say!
That was the best one
Absolutely
Now we got them rainbow plates though, pretty snazzy
Reckon! and I see people with the "European" style plates too
Yeah its pretty funny to see a euro plate on a mazda
haha yeah
Well I think Holden used to import the Astra from Belgium or something, so close enough
I am too old

soz ;)
Have you seen the demographic data and social media platforms?
Nah I dont use snapchat atx cause it was after my time so you are keeping up well
Nope bloods, have you?
I assume its just old people on facebook
haha you called it
I don't even have Facebook
old people migrate to facebook, snapchat for young people, instagram is in between
Then I can't be old
Facts
"You're only as old as the social media platform you last used"
Then I'm prepubescent
I tend to use instagram first, but dont really even use that much
facebook is just marketplace lol
Hey bloods I need to know if I should insult you or not. North or southside?
PUT IT ON THE BARBIE BOTH OF YOU
is that a euphemism
North side strong side!!
It could be whatever you want it to be 🤓
Oof
you?
Thats yucky mate
haha
Yeah nah Thuggeranong
Well I've got fibre to the home... the REAL NBN
o
Did you just slam your hand on the keyboard @ocean mirage ?
basically

I thought you would be hanging out at the HyperD at this time of night
Yeah nah yeah I should be aye
lol
but yeah that FTTN would be nice, especially once you can actually get decent plans
i mean
FTTP
I have always paid less than what I ever paid on ADSL2
That's paying for the best plans too
I live between 4 big farms and I can have gigabit via fiber
jealous lol
I mean I get about 75/30 realistically which I dont hate
but better is better
the worst
yeah i think i can get 250/80 soon so might upgrade soon
something like that
I have 300/300 right now, the price point up to giga is almost triple price
yeah that should be coming bloods
I wonder when the next chance the rest of us will get at fiber
Just move to Norway
i'm guessing a long while
Even my hometown that is further north than Canada gives you gigabit
I would die in norway
yeah it wouldn't cost anywhere near what they guessed though bloods
fuckers
a terrible decision from a long list
yeah but surely that's a basic gov responsibility😂
not in a lot of places lol
but yeah paying for yourself costs tens of thousands in most cases lol
and like $330 to even get a quote
that's steep
We installed fiber at my father's house in 2004, cost $160 as long as i dug the trench myself
nice
European countries are warmer than Australia though
indoors
Our building standards are non existant
We have insulation yes
And double glazing
Triple
And air tightness. Vapour barriers ,
We don't even have double
Or sealed window frames
Or thermal breaks. Or passive design
Because it's easier to put it on the Barbie that way
We poke holes in our walls and ceilings on purpose
And have 3mm glass inside crappy aluminium window frames assembled and installed as cheap as possible
Then we make those windows floor to ceiling wall to wall
I haven't seen that last part
And expose it to the north and west
Why do people even bother building houses in Australia
Super common in new houses here
It sounds like living outdoors
Oh new stuff maybe
"I like lots of light"
My last rental the entire wall of the master bedroom was window
And street facing too
Walk around without underwear too then?
I can understand the light thing tbh
Lol I didn't have curtains when we first moved in atxbyea
Lol wtf
If anyone saw my junk thats their problem
I see that in houses that are bought by polish or Belgian people
They don't use curtains at all
I can watch telly at my polish neighbors just by sitting in the kitchen
The house had just been renovated for sale and they like lost half the curtains
the curtains that came with it were ugly anyway so we'd have bought new ones either way
But then again, Belgian people press a button when they go to bed that puts steel blinders on the doors and windows of the house
Weird Belgians
I work with a Belgian woman
her car got stolen cause she left the keys in the ignition
I think she still does
But in northern Norway people hardly ever lock their doors, it is a thing that people should be able to walk in and say are you home? Coffee?
My last car got broken into and they stole some tools and my sunnies. I was sitting with my back to a window, the car was on the other side lol
Rofl
I might have actually left it unlocked but I am not sure
you could unlock that car with anything
I gave it to a friend and he accidently opened it with a key to a completely different car
I still miss those sunnies
In Germany that is illegal
For anyone who has been in London, if you listen to Roger Waters - Picture That in closed headphones it is just like being on the tube, it is uncanny
In germany you're not allowed to leave cars/car-windows open
I believe it might be illegal here too Anon
I assume its just making work for police
There's a guy here who owns a lot of car dealerships
Like worth $250m+
He doesn't insure his own cars and he leaves his keys in the ignition at his house
Because he thinks his security system is so good no one would ever get onto his property
Nekminnit, car stolen
surprised pikachu
Worked with a colleague from Johannesburg, his car got stolen like twice a month
From his house
Usually destroyed also
My friend from ZA moved here with his parents when he was early teens or so
They didn't understand why the first house they looked at to rent didn't have bars on the windows
Most mornings on the train, when it gets to the outskirts of Dublin, there's a few fields where there's always up to 10 burnt up cars.
They nick them, race them until they crash or break the car, and then set them on fire where they finish.
@clear ferry It's out by Adamstown and Clondalkin.
Oh, I did not know that @hushed basalt
@strange vapor so far out I've never heard of it 😛
@clear ferry You're probably better off!
Wasn't it in South Africa that someone actually created a working flamethrower car alarm?
The Blaster (also called the "BMW Flamethrower") was a 1998 invention by South African inventor Charl Fourie designed to provide a defence against carjackings.
The invention came in response to the increasingly severe violent crime situation in South Africa, which in 1998 had...
Amazingly, it wasn't banned, just too expensive!
Wonder if there's a HA integration? 😄
I wish I was more technical in some areas, so I could build a can bus device in my cars to talk directly to HA 😛
You can always learn :)
Oh man, watching TV atm but that reminds me to get some paul simon
Graceland is probably one of the best albums of all time, if you havent seen the documentary about it I recommend it highly
@clear ferry https://github.com/brendan-w/python-OBD Nice library for talking to Bluetooh OBD devices which can be got cheap on Ebay. Get something like a little Pi and you're sorted 😉
I am acquiring it now
@strange vapor I'm listening....
I've had all of Simon and Garfunkel for a while but been meaning to get Paul Simons solo stuff for ages
Now if I could get @light trout to make that obd component into a ha component that supported multiple entries 😛
Ludeeus is away for 15h 59m 55s with a message :point_right: "away" adverb
"to or at a distance from a particular place, person, or thing."
@ocean mirage recommend checking out Peter Gabriels cover of the boy in the bubble, it is actually better than the original imo
I never did either, but the last year I've deepdived
The Growing Up Live DVD is a must see
The secret world live is also amazing
I'll get there lol
I enjoy Gabriel solo, and genesis after Gabriel
I've not been listening to heaps of anything lately, I need to change that
You are probably too young to have seen the Land of Confusion video when it aired on TV, but check it out too 😛
You should subscribe to my music newsletter
😂
It is unfortunately in Norwegian though
1986, great year
birthyear?
haha yeah
no your newsletter ffs
Yes it is, I try to send it out two to four times a year
Could always use google translate
My wife speaks norwegian
she lived there as a child for a few years
Mostly colleagues, family and customers who get it 😛
1984 4 lyfe
Ship me your email @ocean mirage and I can send you an old edition and see if you enjoy and can translate it 😛
Pass it through Deepl, one of the better online translators I've used.
I love translating the lower Slavic languages through Google translate, I usually find car related stuff like that, and it is always hilarious
@ocean mirage what, you mean Norwegian is beautiful? 😛
I read the word Babymetal, not sure if I want to translate
yeah but it makes no sense
I cant read this at all!
It is the name of the band 😂
Just put it on the Barbie @ocean mirage then it'll make sense
ahh there we go

Norwegian has a lot of the same grammar as English, so it usually translates nicely
@clear ferry Why not just use English so?
Because we speak Norwegian in this country sadly 🤷
Probably because only awkward gits like @clear ferry use Norwegian!
just with opposite meanings
"this is an album that is best enjoyed with headphones in my opinion"

Deepl
this is an album that is absolutely no good at all with headphones in my opinion
Deepl things its Dutch though the dumb fuck
Hope neither try to translate the Spotify urls
Sadly, my generation are shit at speaking Irish for the most part. Thankfully, the generations after are taught it in a lot better fashion.
I used to know several phrases, but they are since lost to me after leaving Ireland
Funnily enough, on the things that really helped? A Irish Language TV station, and they managed to get the rights to Spongebob Squarepants and do a really good job of translating it 😃
Lol
What are you trying to say here "hans dype stemme er passelig vanskelig å unngå å legge merke til"
everything translates it differently
His deep voice is quite hard to miss
okay yeah google comes closest
sort of
"his deep voice is hardly difficult to avoid" - So it actually comes out as the opposite, but I got the meaning
translate.atxbyea.ch is the most acurate
I write in normalized Norwegian, but I could have written in my own dialect, nothing would translate that
Bing says "his deep voice is customizable hard to avoid noticing'
so uhhh what
other than that one word it gets close lol
thats the sentence they all seem to have the most trouble with so far
That is because you are a weirdo probably!
You got quite the collection of links here, I'll go through em when I'm not watching TV
oh for sure
Yeah, that is the Christmas mail I sent last year
I try to get out four per year
But only two so far this year
Including the one I'm writing
Haven't considered doing a blog? You love sharing music
I have a shitty one, tried blogging work stuff, but I suck at sticking with it
Yeah fair enough
This translates pretty well
I'll probably have a listen to it tomorrow. I have a list of a few artists to listen to and maybe acquire, I like getting new things
New old things normally
I'll send you the other mails too then
Sure, I'll get to them eventually lol
Current in my kitchen working away. Work doesn't care. We have no shortage of communication tools.
I can't work from home all the time but its pretty free
we got cisco jabber as our main communication thing
It's pretty much by Team it's decided here. In my team we have people spread out all over the US and EU, so plenty of working from home by default.
@clear ferry Cisco Jabber is actually not too bad, but stupidly expensive!
Win10 ain't bad, I still have customers stuck on win7
@strange vapor haven't seen it since I worked in Dublin, and that is 12 years ago 😂
Used to use it, but gone to Zoom.us now which handles large meetings without falling over.
Are you still running token ring? Or lotus notes?
Surprisingly not
CRTs?
Not that either
VT100s?
User hardware is pretty good actually, spending money is easy, being a decent organisation is hard
or harder lol
Bugzilla?
no but also
We have a whitelist now that we are on windows 10
can't even run portable apps
Car says 33 degrees outside
Perfect
It's a Australian all time low you say?
25c here
27 with a AC
36 outside
huh. I've stumbled over someones unsecured node-red installation on the web 🤔
Parked car says 39 while standing still
yikes
Actual measured is probably 32, but it feels like 40
Volvo feels with you and shows the feeling temp
@dark sparrow
reminds me bout this tread
YIkes
Lol I'm driving a Opel while my Saab is in the shop @boreal pewter
I've been testimg some stuff with Serveo and then stumbled over some giant Node-Red installation (which apparently also has a door lock connected to it!)
left that guy a couple of nodes in the main tab telling him to secure his node
Lookup the IP and figure out if someone owns it or if it is an ISP owned ip
Then you have done what you can do 🤷
Well lets hope he checks his nodered installation
because by the looks of it, anyone with the ipadress (or just the port lol) can just access his door and unlock it, as well as his vaccuum and some other things
what port nodred uses?
eh - nvm I dontt want lo lurk arount the ned - Reverseproxy ftw 🤣
hehe, i might just disconnect one door node so he has to check.
WAF is declining
@dark sparrow good idea
meehhh..
Just done. and left a comment as well
deam - firt time ever that I his the HA stop button..
🛑
ever since i moved my HA installation to docker the only stop I needed was from the Portainer GUI
well I actually dont like to have this button
https://i.imgur.com/V4kMfch.png
I think i've actually never used that button
same - untill now 🤣
what did you stop it for
wanted a restart that my new rest sensor get loaded. only thing I ask me now why ever I would like to stop HA only 🤔
a restart wouldve worked too, wouldnt it?
Would have worked better - had to start the container with ssh again 🙈
Went for a walk into town. While the continent is boiling, we're getting really heavy but short rain showers!
34 and no ac in my car here
didnt the car have ac?
This Saab needs a top-up of gas
are smart fluorescent lamps a thing?
I don't think so @midnight adder
Best you can probally hope for is a smart switch
Oof, the temperature hasn't dipped below 20 at night, it is still 22 degrees outside
