Because, why not go overkill?

Why not a DL580 in the back just for the hell of it ThinkEyes

Anything is better than a ford or a French car 😛

Whenever I travel for work I specify "no French cars" 😂

Last when someone crashed my car I got a completely New 2018 Mercedes C180 and I would never buy one

clever mortar
#

Only driven Merc sports cars (as hire cars) and been very happy with them - that was "some" years ago though

boreal pewter
#

I also have a neighbor who offered me discount on New Fords, up to 28% but only 13 on a Mustang, didnt want them either

clever mortar
#

I've driven a bunch of new Fords, and to be honest, they're pretty good - not exciting, like a sports car, but still a very pleasant drive

#

Kia cars have been surprisingly good too - not like the old ones

boreal pewter
#

But I somehow dont like any other cars than BMWs. I find the New GLA pretty, or a Volvo XC90, Mustang or even the Passat CC and Tuareg. But the interior kills each of them

Ford are so... Plasticcy

It feels like sitting in a toy car

boreal pewter

The same to me with any car other than BMW

If it's half as much fun as the original, it's going to be a mountain load of fun

boreal pewter

Which one you mean?

clear ferry
#

I have a old colleague who had 4 BMW alpines

#

I know one of them was only made 200 of or something

clever mortar

The original Mini Cooper 😉

You could hear the points add up on your license as you drove 😄

boreal pewter
#

Oh I read not long ago of an ebay action in murica where an Alpine was Sold for 14k€ with an V8 and 400PS or so, New price was 100k+

What would a ubiquiti solution cost with a router and 3 access points and the other stuff I would need in that ecosystem?

clever mortar
#

And where in the world are you?

amber ice
#

Germany

#

Are we talking 500, 1000 or 3000€?

#

Approximately of course so I get some sort of reference

#

I headed smth about ubiquiti before, smth like a cloud key or smth. I don't know what it's used forgot if I need that or other things to run my network

clever mortar
#

Unifi USG (router) is about £115
Access points for AC are about £175
Cloud key is another £200

amber ice
#

OK, I need to get to know that ecosystem a bit more

#

Maybe if my fritz stuff breaks down I'll consider switching to that or pfsense

Or Mikrotik

willow hull

they have a very disruptive pricing model

It's more than just Wifi

Also, wired backhaul over WiFi always

willow hull

anon - for home use or simple networks then maybe not so differential

10g, what is this, 2008? 😛

hushed basalt
#

Quiet you

#

I need to put 10g in between the edit suite and the new nas at work

#

I think I've deciphered the labryinth that is sfps and optical media

#

My understanding so far is that I want SFP+ LR LC modules with LC-LC SM cable

#

Bi directional transceivers aren't what I want for internal cabling. Only links over street fibre etc.

#

I don't want DAC because, it's more expensive and it's copper. And I don't want AOC because I can't different modules on each end for compatibility and the cables are harder to run

#

Any thoughts @clear ferry

hushed basalt

Basically when we shoot a job we just back up the footage for a couple of weeks after we give it to the client

#

For when they inevitably loose the drive

ocean mirage
#

yeah makes sense

clear ferry
#

@hushed basalt optical is always preferred, but LR and SM is the more expensive option, how far is the stretch?

hushed basalt
#

Prices seemed the same on fs.com

#

I don't know if that's worthwhile looking at

clear ferry
#

Really? Traditionally LR is 4-10x the price depending on distance required

hushed basalt
#

This is just short range

#

10 metres by cable from one room to the other

#

$26 for SR and $34 for LR

#

If I could be certain the compatibility would be fine I would just go AOC so I don't have to worry about dust

clear ferry
#

AOC is a good option for most, unless you have switches that are bitchy

#

No switches? Just point to point?

hushed basalt
#

Point to point

#

Qnaps inbuilt sfp+ to a HP NC523SFP

For $60 it might just be worth a punt

Not my money also :D

@clear ferry get a new car

Yes, I like it strange ratirlHappy

boreal pewter

When a combi and a truck trailer become a baby..

clear ferry

There is a Swedish saying about pimping a Volvo, You can put makeup on a pig,but it is still a pig

boreal pewter
#

Oh you mean you can get the people out of the ghetto but not the ghetto out of the ppl

clear ferry
#

But the Swedes are weirdos they can start driving at 14 if they drive an Epatraktor, that is any car, with the back cut off and the engine limited to 50kmph

#

Like this

boreal pewter
#

And in germany you need a licence plate and pay for insurance if you want a e-scooter and even that has to be limited to 20km/h 😛

#

AND you have to drive it on the street or on bike-roads if they exist

clear ferry
hushed basalt
#

Our ebikes are limited to 200w 25kmh

Or 250w but with pedal assist only

#

Why is bicycle adoption so low in Australia 🤷

ocean mirage

Bikes wankers

That’s the sentiment

tough igloo

That’s a ute @clear ferry

hushed basalt

Also the fact that you can't get a decent electric bike

Want to tow a trailer of groceries around, nah sorry 250w only. Want to get to work quickly. Nah sorry 25kmh.

In most cities here aren’t you not allowed on footpaths either?

hushed basalt

You can here

But most yeah

Footpaths are pretty dangerous though

tough igloo

In Canberra they’re called dual use paths 🤣

Yeah you can in Canberra too but we have so much space

Easy to go around pedestrians

Wait

hushed basalt

First other Canberran I’ve seen on discord

tough igloo

🤣

#

There’s a popular Pokémon go Canberra discord that my wife uses

hushed basalt

Shared paths arent footpaths though

Footpaths are just the normal things going past houses

ocean mirage

Oh actually yeah my girlfriend used a similar discord

hushed basalt
#

Shared paths here are usually quite deliberate cycling routes

ocean mirage
#

Pokémon go Weston, when we lived there

#

Oh yeah maybe true here telco

#

But they’re treated exactly the same as other paths here

hushed basalt
#

This is a typical shared path

ocean mirage

Yeah ours are black asphalt with a deviding line

Dividing?

hushed basalt

Your face is an asphalt

I wonder if I should just set up a recurring order of one zigbee device a week

I am still waiting on one of the bits to use that zigbee workaround thing

tough igloo

What the workaround thing?

ocean mirage

use 'any' zigbee device from one hub

violet mica
tough igloo

Oh yeh I use deconz/raspbee for that so I use a bunch of different zigbee brands

ocean mirage

oh okay cool

This was the first thing I found, seems popular

Right now I only have my aircon on HA via a broadlink mini lol

tough igloo
#

The mini is good. Solid device

ocean mirage
#

Yeah need to get some more automation stuff going

#

Get my solar panels connected to HA

tough igloo
#

Can’t wait to get solar. I have whole house energy monitoring

ocean mirage
#

I have a zigbee plug and thermometer/hygrometer I want to get working so I can control the humidity a bit better

#

ah yeah by which means?

tough igloo
#

The efergy device

#

It uses cloud but might move to a local device

ocean mirage
#

Ah okay, I wasn't familiar with that one

#

I was looking at stuff like iotawatt and another one but I will be getting a smart meter from actew soon, not sure if I will be able to get any use out of that

#

only getting it cause I got the solar panels a few weeks ago

#

until its installed I am getting 1:1 for my solar since it just ticks the meter back lol

hushed basalt
#

Do you like my mounting block

ocean mirage
#

I would mount your block

hushed basalt

Thats the zigbee guy?

Thats the piece I am still waiting on

I might order another CC

Not a bad idea, cause you will be waiting lol

I'm also waiting sad sad sad sad sad

Moved my HA install to a nice new Rackmount box up in the attic. All good except for one problem, it's in a rack which seemingly happily blocks ZWave!

#

Happily, I found a cheap ass china goods tech shop nearby which does 9ft USB extension cables 😄

hushed basalt
#

I ordered a long usb off amazon to get my zigbee out of my rack

#

Fun fact, Ikea switches have crap signal strength

strange vapor
#

Have an Hue Hub mounted where it's relatively hidden in the hall. Working a charm since I moved it there. Two bulbs which were showing up as unavialable a lot are now working perfectly

hushed basalt
#

If it was up to me I'd be hard wiring as much as possible

#

Shame everything is cheaper on wireless

#

Ethernet is too heavy duty for sensors and the like too. I'd need to look into some sort of bus wiring

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt I think it's in John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" series there's one book where they're trying to stop all radio signals to stop their radio's betraying their position, and it's stated that their tech has progressed to the point where everythign within their tablet style computers is communicating wirelessly as it's cheaper.

#

ie, not even traces on the board!

hushed basalt
#

Haha

#

Reminds me of Battlefield Earth

#

Hubbard was a nutter and or a sociopath but he was a half okay scifi writer

#

They have fake circuitry on the board and hidden circuitry inside it

#

I guess what I'm trying to avoid is batteries so much as wireless

strange vapor
#

I have a couple of Aeotech multi-sensors where I've run ethernet cable through the attic to above them. Then I have these handy little POE to USB adapters which work surprising well.

#

24port POE mikrotec swithc with plenty of PoE ports to spare.

hushed basalt
#

I've thought about those sort of things for google home minis

#

So poe to ethernet and usb micro, then another combiner for ethernet OTG on usb

#

To run ethernet and power to a home mini in the ceiling or wall

#

When I get a switch I'll probably get the miktrotec one with 4 x sfp+ and 24 x poe

strange vapor
#

That's the one I have, and it works a charm.

#

Not the biggest fan of their UI, but manage it mostly via Ansible anyway

hushed basalt
#

Mmm ansible

#

I'm itching so badly to just drop some money on 3 or 4 optiplex sffs

#

I know you can virtualize a homelab cluster, but there's something extra about real nodes

#

Man optical stuff is so cheap compared to film and tv cables

#

It's not uncommon to see cables $200-$300 for 6 inches between a camera and a lens etc

#

A cool $365 USD

pure vine
#

Thats becuse its got canon on it

strange vapor
#

I use Ansible and Terraform extensively at work, so using it to manage the silly amount of services I self host seemed like a good idea 😃 Worked out well recently. My primary mail server died badly. Put in a replacement, ran Ansible against it, restored some Mail and DB backups, and all was good!

hushed basalt

I use ansible on my linux desktop

@clear ferry is the radio in the car a bare basic one

clear ferry
#

@pure vine very basic, think I'll replace it with a 2din android device with Bluetooth and DAB

#

Maybe I'll even get one with wireless parking sensors or wireless camera

pure vine
#

How good is DAB in norway, its kind of terrible here as all the operators want to cram stations on to their multiplex's meaning the quality is kinda bad

midnight adder
#

i want more smart plugs

but i ran out of things to put on smart plugs

what do

We only have dab since the government sent all our fm transmitters to Africa, the quality is ok, but very compressed, coverage got good after two years @pure vine

pure vine
#

IIRC when we had a hire car with DAB, its currently awful in wales, even internet radio would work better than DAB now

clever mortar
#

Same challenge in large parts of Scotland

#

Mind you, those are usually the same places that have no mobile signal...

pure vine
#

It used to be that in wales, but the welsh goverment seems to have funded better mobile internet, so there is internet most of the way apart from in the mountains near aberystwyth

clever mortar

Yeah, I was driving around Loch Ness the other week, and the signal there often vanished

Mind you, when the "horizon" is about 40 degrees up 🤷

pure vine

i think that one is LTE-800

#

And here is BBC radio 3, who normally are one of the higher quality BBC stations, at a very low bandwidth too

#

So yeah, the uk has kind of squandered the opportunity of DAB on cramming stations

Global radio is even worse

@solemn moon I'm honestly surprised as fuck that those two partnered up.

Personally, minus the seamless whole home mesh component, I just see Sonos as Bose v2.0. and by that I mean overpriced plug and play for people with too much money and not enough sense.

#

And I can't imagine that the price won't drop below the initial MSRP at some point.

So if you're talking about being able to pick up basically a play:one for half the price...ok. Now you have my attention.

I do think it will be at a lower price, thats just the IKEA way

odd hill

Play:one is anywhere from 120-150. This thing is launching at $100. So yeah. It'll come down. And then sales. I figure in about 6 months you'll probably be able to scoop them up used for like $50.

My point was more that as long as Google (et al) make a ton of money having a walled garden (i.e. Nest), others will continue to do so (e.g. Ecoboo, Samsung, etc). Some will try to go the open field route, but most will first try going the walled garden approach, try and get you to buy into it. It's very hard to convince public companies to have more open ecosystems

odd hill
#

oh. they won't.

just like all of these morons like CBS and Disney pulling all their content into their respective walled gardens is already making piracy spike back to pre-netflix levels.

ocean mirage
#

I don't fully understand these smart/learning thermostat things like

couldn't it just be software

clear ferry
#

hm, do you have an example @ocean mirage ?

ocean mirage
#

Well like you have those nest 'learning' thermostats right, and similar things

#

learn your schedule and adjust based on it

#

but all solutions seem to be pieces of hardware you have to buy, which makes sense if its the only thing that you have, but heaps of people are running other devices so it makes sense to me that you could solve this as an app/plugin on whatever device you are running home automation with

#

right?

#

I could be misunderstanding how they work

clear ferry
#

aha, I see, yes, you can do a lot of the same with influxdb on your own

#

and discover the patterns yourself

#

that is just propitary cloud data harvesting..

ocean mirage
#

ah okay, so it become a semi-manual process?

#

I just expected to find more software dedicated to just this

clear ferry
#

I'm pretty sure you can do get it more automatic with grafana \ influx and some other stuff, but I haven't worked with it 🤷

ocean mirage
#

Fair enough, I'll look more into it for now

#

I mean for the most part my heating/cooling will just be simple automations and manual use outside that schedule which I am probably fine with

#

Just turn on before I wake up and maybe some stuff to do with heating the house if I am generating more power than I am using

#

thats simple, but I'd be interested to see the learning stuff

clear ferry
#

yeah, you can smartify it pretty much without learning

#

I am going to get my heat pump in the attic to turn off when there is no occupancy upstairs (I have an office there) and the downstairs heatpump to turn down during night

ocean mirage

I’ve never seen under -7 and that’s a really cold exception

clear ferry

in my hometown, which is by the coast, if we get -12 I would kinda die, I now live inland and -35 doesn't bother me

#

Looks nice in the winter

#

The climate data was quite interesting even for me to see then umbers

#

december sunshine hours == 0, june sunshine hours == 221

#

never seen the actual numbers, we just live it

ocean mirage
#

lol makes sense up there but funny to see like that

#

also yeah thats a handsome city

clear ferry
#

we do however have sunlight 24\7 to be fair, but the calculation is probably not made for us 🤣

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I think that'd throw me for a bit

#

would be a nice novelty to a tourist

clear ferry
#

The midnight sun occurs from about 18 May to 26 July, but the mountains in the north block the view of it for a few days, meaning that one can see the midnight sun from about 21 May to 21 July. Owing to Tromsø's high latitude, twilight is long, meaning there is no true night between March 27 and September 17.

#

I grew up with it and my sleep pattern was broken my entire life 🤷

#

I've lived south for 12 years now, started sleeping good two years ago 🤣

ocean mirage
#

Ah yeah

#

I had no idea it was so long

clear ferry
#

it is quite strange for anyone who has never seen it I reckon

so when we are kids we are usually outside until long in the evenings

Ship me your email @ocean mirage and I can send you an old edition and see if you enjoy and can translate it 😛

strange vapor
#

Pass it through Deepl, one of the better online translators I've used.

ocean mirage
#

Man and you guys write like this all the time?

#

Why don't you just use english geez

clear ferry
#

I love translating the lower Slavic languages through Google translate, I usually find car related stuff like that, and it is always hilarious

#

@ocean mirage what, you mean Norwegian is beautiful? 😛

ocean mirage
#

I read the word Babymetal, not sure if I want to translate

#

yeah but it makes no sense

#

I cant read this at all!

clear ferry
#

It is the name of the band 😂

#

Just put it on the Barbie @ocean mirage then it'll make sense

ocean mirage
#

ahh there we go

clear ferry
ocean mirage
#

Deepl thought it was Dutch

#

google got it

clear ferry
#

Norwegian has a lot of the same grammar as English, so it usually translates nicely

strange vapor
#

@clear ferry Why not just use English so?

ocean mirage
#

Oh deepl doesn't do norwegian

#

still it translates pretty well from 'dutch' lol

clear ferry
#

Because we speak Norwegian in this country sadly 🤷

strange vapor
#

Probably because only awkward gits like @clear ferry use Norwegian!

ocean mirage
#

just with opposite meanings

#

Google

#

"this is an album that is best enjoyed with headphones in my opinion"

clear ferry
ocean mirage
#

Deepl

#

this is an album that is absolutely no good at all with headphones in my opinion

clear ferry
#

Hahahaha
Wtf

#

Google definitely got ot

ocean mirage
#

Deepl things its Dutch though the dumb fuck

clear ferry
#

Hope neither try to translate the Spotify urls

strange vapor
#

Sadly, my generation are shit at speaking Irish for the most part. Thankfully, the generations after are taught it in a lot better fashion.

clear ferry
#

I used to know several phrases, but they are since lost to me after leaving Ireland

strange vapor
#

Funnily enough, on the things that really helped? A Irish Language TV station, and they managed to get the rights to Spongebob Squarepants and do a really good job of translating it 😃

clear ferry
#

Lol

ocean mirage
#

What are you trying to say here "hans dype stemme er passelig vanskelig å unngå å legge merke til"

#

everything translates it differently

clear ferry
#

His deep voice is quite hard to miss

ocean mirage
#

okay yeah google comes closest

#

sort of

#

"his deep voice is hardly difficult to avoid" - So it actually comes out as the opposite, but I got the meaning

light trout
#

translate.atxbyea.ch is the most acurate

clear ferry
#

I write in normalized Norwegian, but I could have written in my own dialect, nothing would translate that monkaChrist

ocean mirage
#

Bing says "his deep voice is customizable hard to avoid noticing'

#

so uhhh what

#

other than that one word it gets close lol

#

thats the sentence they all seem to have the most trouble with so far

clear ferry
#

Lol it is shit written though

#

So probably my fault

ocean mirage
#

still funny

#

also I remember Japan and im not 70s ;)

clear ferry
#

That is because you are a weirdo probably!

ocean mirage
#

You got quite the collection of links here, I'll go through em when I'm not watching TV

#

oh for sure

clear ferry
#

Yeah, that is the Christmas mail I sent last year

#

I try to get out four per year

#

But only two so far this year

#

Including the one I'm writing

ocean mirage
#

Haven't considered doing a blog? You love sharing music

clear ferry
#

I have a shitty one, tried blogging work stuff, but I suck at sticking with it kitty

ocean mirage
#

Yeah fair enough

#

This translates pretty well

#

I'll probably have a listen to it tomorrow. I have a list of a few artists to listen to and maybe acquire, I like getting new things

#

New old things normally

clear ferry
#

I'll send you the other mails too then GWspenderThinkChubby

ocean mirage
#

Sure, I'll get to them eventually lol

clear ferry
#

I'm glad this has been what working the last 12 years have been like

strange vapor
#

Current in my kitchen working away. Work doesn't care. We have no shortage of communication tools.

ocean mirage
#

I can't work from home all the time but its pretty free

#

we got cisco jabber as our main communication thing

clear ferry
#

Jabber wtf

#

Is this 2007?

ocean mirage
#

Basically

#

Did I tell you

#

We just upgraded to windows 10

strange vapor
#

It's pretty much by Team it's decided here. In my team we have people spread out all over the US and EU, so plenty of working from home by default.

#

@clear ferry Cisco Jabber is actually not too bad, but stupidly expensive!

clear ferry
#

Win10 ain't bad, I still have customers stuck on win7 sad

#

@strange vapor haven't seen it since I worked in Dublin, and that is 12 years ago 😂

strange vapor
#

Used to use it, but gone to Zoom.us now which handles large meetings without falling over.

ocean mirage
#

uhhh

#

What else are we old on

#

how do you like waterfall

clear ferry
#

Are you still running token ring? Or lotus notes?

ocean mirage
#

Surprisingly not

strange vapor
#

CRTs?

ocean mirage
#

Not that either

clear ferry
#

VT100s?

ocean mirage
#

User hardware is pretty good actually, spending money is easy, being a decent organisation is hard

#

or harder lol

strange vapor
#

Bugzilla?

ocean mirage
#

no but also

#

We have a whitelist now that we are on windows 10

#

can't even run portable apps

clear ferry
#

Car says 33 degrees outside MonkaSadRain

clear ferry

Lol I'm driving a Opel while my Saab is in the shop @boreal pewter

dark sparrow
#

I've been testimg some stuff with Serveo and then stumbled over some giant Node-Red installation (which apparently also has a door lock connected to it!)

#

left that guy a couple of nodes in the main tab telling him to secure his node

clear ferry
#

Lookup the IP and figure out if someone owns it or if it is an ISP owned ip

dark sparrow
#

good idea

#

welp how do i find out a tunneled ip?

#

ok got it and its private

clear ferry
#

Then you have done what you can do 🤷

dark sparrow
#

Well lets hope he checks his nodered installation

#

because by the looks of it, anyone with the ipadress (or just the port lol) can just access his door and unlock it, as well as his vaccuum and some other things

hearty depot
#

what port nodred uses?

dark sparrow
#

yea

#

and proably his subdomain

hearty depot
#

eh - nvm I dontt want lo lurk arount the ned - Reverseproxy ftw 🤣

dark sparrow
#

hehe, i might just disconnect one door node so he has to check.

hearty depot
#

WAF is declining

clear ferry
#

@dark sparrow good idea

hearty depot
#

meehhh..

dark sparrow
#

Just done. and left a comment as well

hearty depot
#

deam - firt time ever that I his the HA stop button..

clear ferry
#

🛑

dark sparrow
#

ever since i moved my HA installation to docker the only stop I needed was from the Portainer GUI

hearty depot
dark sparrow
#

I think i've actually never used that button

hearty depot
#

same - untill now 🤣

dark sparrow
#

what did you stop it for

hearty depot
#

wanted a restart that my new rest sensor get loaded. only thing I ask me now why ever I would like to stop HA only 🤔

dark sparrow
#

a restart wouldve worked too, wouldnt it?

hearty depot
#

Would have worked better - had to start the container with ssh again 🙈

strange vapor

Went for a walk into town. While the continent is boiling, we're getting really heavy but short rain showers!
