i have an esxi server
Do you have a vm already running an os that you can use
I'd put it on docker on a vm if I was you
i'm not a fan of docker
Why's that?
probably gonna throw it on a generic ubuntu server
I mean it will work but it's an expensive way to do it
docker's port management is dumb
i shouldn't have to re-add a container just to open up a port
Re-add?
I just docker-compose up and it manages all of that
Although my ports are handled more by my reverse proxy. The container ports always stay unexposed and the reverse proxy forwards the ports
So I can 'open' a port just by changing my reverse proxy config
But i would say 99% of the time it's just the one default service port opened. It would be extremely rare that I've added another port forwarding to a container after creation
You should give docker another go. Use docker-compose
Ubuntu server ๐คข
i have a windows server that i use for .net development
good luck running that on anything nix
Everything that @clear ferry doesnโt use makes him sick ;)

Angery
Triggered like an Australian without a BARBIE
My barbie has sat in a box since I got it lol
In fairness summer was over when I got it
You crazy Oz people with your upside down summer and winters
Hot snow falls up
I actually lived in NZ for a month
pff, I was 11 years old and travelling without family ๐คฃ
Yeah well you already had several houses by then

@ocean mirage are you enjoying the cricket?
hi all - I've written up what I hope is a good technical post to ask for help diagnosing a mosquitto MQTT problem (possibly to do with log file permission) whilst running Homeassistant in venv. I'm also a noob at Discord etiquette (sorry) in terms of where to post an issue like this to ask for help - because I don't know if it is a user permissions thing resulting from having installed in venv, or if it is a mosquitto issue or something else (probably PEBKAC) please can someone guide me?
@light pawn The channel topics give you hints as to where to post, but for something like this... I'd start in #330944238910963714
thank you very much @clever mortar - I'll go post my write up there. I did pop my head up there a couple of weeks ago and asked if I was in right place for hass/mqtt/venv but didn't get any replies so I chickened out ๐ but happier to try again now thanks to your reply.
You won't always get replies to asking if you can ask a question ๐
fairy nuff
Big long writeups too also are best done on the forum, rather than here
Generally, chat is great for "quick fixes" (for some value of quick) and the forum for oh my, it's all a mess
ahhh! so I thought the forum didn't do support any more and it was all here.... light bulb moment
Nah, there's here, there, and a whole bunch of social media haunts too
before I head off into the sunset - can I check which forum you mean?
The one linked from the channel topic in #330944238910963714 - and from the official HA docs ๐

thank you kindly - I'll stop lounging and head over there
No worries ๐
Does anyone else do this with cameras, give them a location so they appeare on the map
Interesting idea
how does it block the standard hot word I wonder
Got 2 speakers inside wich making a "Stรถrgerรคusch" ... How it's called on English?
Interference or noise ;)
thought so. I wonder if that works in all situations that well, but I guess it doesn't matter much. I'd love to call my assistant HAL
Google?
Reminds me, I need to rewatch 2001 soon, it's been atleast 10 years since last I saw it
But I frequently listen to samples since amused to death is on heavy rotation for me since 2001
Oh btw samba master - idea how to recreate the hassio share?

I shoot into the blue here
They should have made that alias thing look like a futurama brain slug.
one of my hue bulbs is malfunctioning and just randomly turns on every half hour or so
fortunately with HA I just created an automation to turn it back off
@quartz ether Uhhh no, I don't really pay attention to the cricket for the most part. Not even sure who is playing whom atm.
Lol.
England received the cup. โWonโ is a bit of a stretch
@sharp spire it would be so much better if the "error" was an automation you made, then you made a "fix" with a second automation
hi everyone i just found this place, looking to start making my home fancy. gonna start with a lock and lightbulbs, anyone have any advice?
@clear ferry it's just automations all the way down
how many bulbs do you have and do you want smart switches? dimming? colors?
the bulbs are zigbee and the lock is zwave
That is a good price for the bulbs, but I would probably start smaller to see if you understand and master it, try with a few bulbs, some sensors and make a full plan on what technology you are going to use
Ikea tradfri is a cheap stepping stone for home automation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr1Bd1zaDTw
well you did say cheap lol. what about the samsung smart things hub?
At ยฃ25 IKEA's Tradfri gateway is the cheapest Zigbee smart home hub that you can buy and as a complete alternative to Philips Hue it could pose a major threa...
Cheap yeah, I have 40+ tradfri bulbs ๐
His arguments about software don't matter when you integrate in ha anyway ๐คท
Have watched a few of his videos, and they're generally good content. However, if I recall correctly, mentioning that "if you had HA you could do X!" is a trigger phrase for him.
I need to break into node red more
Storm the gates
I love how you don't have to reload the server every time unlike ha
Probably nice, but a 1 second reboot don't bother me
Don't have to reload/restart with AD, it does that automagically
hmm, project for tonight, move my HA install to better hardware. Sort of outgrown the Pi ๐
Im just missing one part to start redoing my ha greenhouse
Time?
Have a nice honey pot running which is used as an input to an block list. Yesterday spotted that EVERY ip in 185.220.101.0/24 got blocked after they all tried an SSH brute force. Turns out to be a network full of TOR exit nodes.
Absolutely brilliant write up! https://blog.cloudflare.com/details-of-the-cloudflare-outage-on-july-2-2019/
Almost nine years ago, Cloudflare was a tiny company and I was a customer not an employee. Cloudflare had launched a month earlier and one day alerting told me that my little site, jgc.org, didnโt seem to have working DNS any more. Cloudflare had pushed out a change
never liked regex ๐
nobody likes regex, but it is handy
Anyone used a IoTaWatt? I'm not really sure how the physical installation side of things works
I just seen this with ESPhome
actually the 'best' way is to install this inside your fuse box
you just clamp them over the cables
Okay cool, I was thinking that might be how it works but that doesn't seem so easy to me
in the breaker box I don't see any wires, but obviously there would be some behind it in the wall cavity
but getting the device in there and powering it might be the hard part
I assume theres room
but I am no electrician, I don't know how to actually power it in there. Obviously theres a lot of power cables lol
regualy you got an shield in front of it
when I get one I ll hire an electitian to do this
the power comes from an power plug - you even have 2 power cables at this one you linked
hmm might be best hey, but sometimes Australian laws are weird, an electrician might not install some random device here, but I could get a power plug I guess
found it @ocean mirage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOgy6QbfeZk
Whole home power monitoring and additional circuits such as solar, electric dryer, electric stove, air conditioners, electric car charging, etc with ESPHome ...
Thanks mate, this is really useful
actually the same device - only that the chances that a tecnican tutching it are even lower
ah yeah
Damn Prime day. Ordered another 4 Osram Plugs
Hi, just wondering if we can get hourly HASS releases? I am not getting my features fast enough. So right now its like every 3-4 weeks right? If it was hourly we could have 504 to 672 times as many features in the same time frame.
Just run dev
yea but dev is not stable. we should have hourly stable releases
Dev is stable enough
Yeah and BMW should release a new car every day
Hear me out though. Right now we get like 20 features a month or so? With hourly releases we'd get 20 features an hour! We could be on hass v2 in like a week i bet.
What is AD?
Depends on the context
I read it as Active Directory and curled up into a fetal position under my desk...
That is one option ๐
Wow. That's a lot to unpack haha
My mind is burnt out right now with zappa
Damn you virtualenv dependencies! Why won't you just run in docker
It literally throws an exception if you're not using it in an venv
use venv inside docker then ๐
Yeah I've been trying to figure that out
It's a little trickier because sub shells don't coexist between RUN lines in the docker file
@clear ferry 10TB Wd elements are on sale for prime day
Didn't you just buy four :D
awww - just found out that I can use fstab with gid and uid โค
Prime doesn't help me at all ๐คท
I can get things from Amazon US through Amazon AU
some things
The free shipping is super when it's eligible
I bought some cameras a few months ago for baby monitors. Was like $60 without Amazon Prime or free shipping with Amazon Prime. hmmmm.
I just bought an Xiaomi temp sensor and a broadlink mini on Amazon Prime AU
With the AUD so crap right now it was only a little bit more expensive than buying it off aliexpress
and I don't have to wait 60 days
But I'll finally be able to do something with Home Assistant
That is overrated
I can't even use smart bulbs. All my sockets are Bayonet and I can't even fit adapters in there
Another reason I hope I get that job in the us, I can stuff my suitcase with cheap us stuff wherever I go over for meetings๐ ๐
Sir, is there are reason that you have 60 KGs of smart bulbs?
๐คท ๐คท ๐คท ๐คท ๐คท
Is there a reason not to?
These 3 cases of hard drives are suspicious. We are going to have to detain you while we clone them all.

24 hours of sun for two months some places
I hope you're not like the brits

OMG ITS 28 degrees, Shirtless men everywhere in Hyde Park
Aye crikey mate
we have that if it's 14+ C
We do that at 10 in the North
That sucked
30+ is cool weather in summer
nothing cool about it
Also we feel it worse since our houses are pieces of crap
But you have summer in winter!
0 to 46 degree climates
Builders here don't even know what heat recovery ventilators are
Or air tightness
They literally don't understand air tightness. I ask them about air tightness and they say "Umm well the door will have a weather strip, that's where all the air gets out anyway"
Nice, gas is 17.41NOK per liter today, I saw 18.08 when I was north two weeks ago
6
aye
same here usually I think the heat has gotten to the head of @clear ferry
2.03usd per liter here
Our country loves it's taxes...
Oh so does ours
When I moved to Oslo 12 years ago it was 1.08usd
That's like 50% tax
We pay 70 pct tax on gas
and an additional 25% on top of that
40 cents a litre tax, plus 10% GST
ew
But do the taxes go towards like, building roads
Or do you have toll roads as well
we have those to
But I only pay 34% income tax though ๐คท
Paying high fuel tax and having to pay to drive on roads ๐
No tolls here,
Income tax is about the same here
Good thing I get all toll booth and milage covered by work though ๐
Yes but the economy suffers ๐
your work pays, with means their client pays, which means their clients pay, which means everyone pays towards those greedy toll operators
It's like insurance, just because the insurer pays the bill, they always get their due
Anyways it's time for bed
Go to sleep it's 11pm
I cost 260usd plus tax for customers per hour, they'll accept it ๐
I'm only 160 ๐ฆ
@light trout tell them you are green on discord, then they'll pay more

boo the prime day deals on kindle fire tablets aren't as good this year

Is this like when you say you're the CEO .... of your sole trading business
@amber bramble buy chuwi tablets, better value ๐
You should go to bed ๐
yeah my brain bad words not work
Amazfit bip is the best watch I've had since the pebble, had two Android ones, they were shite, and Apple watch is useless with one day battery life
my apple watch gets about 2 days of battery life ๐
Two? Shiiit
@clear ferry can you send me a link to one of those chuwi tablets
Pebble was/is nice, I have one of those, and an apple one, not using any, there is a clock on my phone ๐
yeah it makes it pretty useless for things like sleep tracking :/
My colleague gets about 8 hours battery life on his $700 android watch
He also bought a VR set for PS4
and he doesn't own a PS4....
NOK 925.11 31%OFF | CHUWI Original Hi9 Tablet PC MTK 8173 Quad core Up to 1.9GHz 4GB RAM 64GB ROM 8.4 inch Android 7.0 tablet 2.5K screen 5000mAh

I ordered this one
Very happy with it
He also bought a second hand Toyota Sahara for $65k plus duties
Then got an aftermarket exhaust put on, and environmental restrictors taken out
My amazfit gets 33 days
then ended up sucking in sand through the air filter manifold into the turbos and engine
Pebble was 6 days
any idea if you can go newer than android nougat on those tablets?
Nope, didn't need anything newer for my use ๐คท
It is the most responsive tablet I have ever used though
Even more than my apple iPad air2
nice
the kindle fires are pretty stupid slow
but i got lucky and got them for like $30 on a prime day deal a couple years ago ๐
would like to upgrade them eventually though
@amber bramble got a few myself they're slow because the software and custom adware $AMZ puts on them is overloading what little ram they do have. If they're older try rooting them and removing the amazon launcher. Had to do that with a few of the Fire HD 7's I got two years ago.
i'm tired of finding bugs everywhere ): bugs at work, bugs at home. luckily my gf, last time i checked, didn't have 'em but shit now i'm scared of looking there as well
@tawny pebble Think of them as job security ๐
anyone split one hdmi to two monitors and have them as one desktop?
i see many splitters, but don't know if they all support extending the desktop or if that's something special to look for
I'd expect the splitter to just duplicate them, you'd need something like a USB (3) display adapter to add another monitor I believe
I've used USB-C with a hub with DisplayPort to drive two monitors independently, but I've never seen anything that will take two HDMI monitors and present them as one to a hdmi port.
Any experience with unify and interference? My whole network started acting up about a month ago with channels getting completely inaccessible, including the zigbee channels (wifi 1,3, zigbee 20 and 25) - any ideas what could do this?
my wifi and zigbee are not overlapping :/
sad - would have been an easy fix
yeah, killed off ch 11 to keep zigbee clear, but no luck
@trail crag what is your base system? It only has one hdmi out then? Daisy chaining is more of a display port or lightning feature, not hdmi
@late gate I have tons of ZigBee and lots of WiFi devices, never have issues ๐คท
@clear ferry @clever mortar @strange vapor right, it's someone with one hdmi out on a laptop and I've only ever seen this done with usb-c or thunderbolt but wasn't sure
Depending on the laptop a docking station or usb c hub is the way to go
some rando dell...waiting for the model number so I can provide better info/options
Yeah, even my 14 year old work laptop could do three monitors with docking
So depends a lot on the model mostly
@clear ferry lucky. I always suspected cause its 2-3 ham radio guys in the street with antennas the size of their house
I try not to have weirdo neighbors, but I live next to a lady with 40 synths and a Hammond organ and Leslie speakers in the living room, and she lives next to me ๐คท
You can do it with USB2, I've seen it done @trail crag - but USB3 is better, and USB-c best
somebody got a mount script? mine doesnt work yet ๐
man mount ๐
๐
What're you trying to do?
I always done it manualy until now - so df to find sdx, mount sdx , mv , umount
but its goten anoying - this part works already ls /dev/disk/by-uuid/F1B0-8FF2 -l | awk -F/ '{print $NF}
but I dont get further in the last hour :/
so when uuid is mounted - unmount
if not mount
Back to basics, what are you actually trying to do? Not the technical bits, but the functionality
make toast
That works...
When I insert an usb. insttead of lookinf or guessing mount /dev/sdx to /home/user/sd
just run sudo ~/mount.sh
There are tools that will automount for you
windows?
Even Linux has had such tools for... well, commercial Unix had them 20 odd years back, so "forever" ๐
Never head bout autofx - thanks ๐
What Linux are you running though?
It's not the only option, but it's the first one I found with Google ๐
Most desktop installs will do it default afaik
Debian and Manjaro
Had to Google Manjaro, never heard of it ๐
awesome for gaming tbh
But you have heard of Hannah Montana linux๐ค
I gamed on Linux in 2003, don't talk to me about awesome

It was hell man, living hell
The drivers would haunt you at night
ATI was king!
how to install/update your kernel/drivers
You kids will never know
nope - not shure if I'm sad or lucky bout this
Like me trying to explain irq jumpers to my apprentices in 2005
that one is easy, that's the save icon
Yeah, but try explaining how to use one, and what that little metal slider does, and why not to bend it
meh, just use it as a coaster for the coffee cup ๐
@clever mortar my apprentices didn't understand that in 2005 either!
I had to dig out a usb one for some custom firmware, and they went like wtf
What, not the good old ribbon cable
I actually used floppy in 2013 to initialize Office upgrade (from a network share).
because I could ๐
I installed Windows 98 from floppy, or 95 I don't remember
Just remember it was over 100 floppies
I installed NT4 from floppies...
Never again
Then I installed a few systems from a crate of QUIC150 tapes...
I have a "mint" win95 on floppy (16 "disks")
what are we buying on amazon
Nothing, because Amazon sucks
Until they start shipping to Norway, for reasonable prices ๐
@storm summit anything good ?
8TB 10TB drives are discounted. Grabbing a few
hmm
Also wd black 1tb nvme
iron wolf 8tb is $30 off. hmm
Great deals on dyson as well
๐
i bought a neato about 3 months ago. good there ๐
i think i'm going to pick up two 8th drives. don't need them, but i'm pretty sure someone around here will.
Roborock here. Been happy with the s5 getting the s6 soon.
@storm summit ship some here ๐
Close call, almost turned on the group "all_switches"... that would have been bad in the middle of the night... the sirens are auto added to that group.. ๐
This is (part of) the reason those groups will eventually be dropped
oh... first time i was thinking about using them actually
Luckily i checked the members first ๐
Any of the auto groups are IMO dangerous, you have zero control of what's in them
I agree
Trying to figure out a logic so i can turon on/off all lights with one button. But can't figure out a good way to do that
Add the lights/switches to a group, and turn the group on @narrow ridge - but that's a #330944238910963714 question ๐
I wasn't asking for help though ๐ But i can turn all on, but then i can't use same button to turn them all off again. ๐
It's my bed-side button so I'll probably just have turn off function on it
Well, toggle toggles... so unless all lights are on some will turn on and others will turn off
I think if you call it on the group, it'll turn them all off if any member is on (by default - you can reverse that)
That might actually work
I am looking for 8 or 10 TB...
The nas you got comes with nvme cache upgrade ?
my existing QNAP NAS is almost full.... that's why I am looking for a new one
donno - it is DS918+
just give it a cup of coffee and let it sober up
Good evening
ok...
nvme's are better than SSD. I can't have 40TB SSDs ๐
nvme's are for caching only - the drives are regular drives
@last plaza why should you need auch a bunch of cache ?
the drive are not the fastest, caching helps with the performance
at least that's the theory I am going with ๐
Ssd is faster than normal drives ..why should that be faster then ?
Nvmes are way faster than ssds
Bought a sandisk nvme a few weeks ago. Speed is in the 4 digits for MByte/s
3000-4000MB/s
I think sata tops out around 550MB/s
Other conveniences like not having to run SATA and power cables too
but I can't use m.2 drives :(
Buying two of those 10TB WDs though
I wonder if HA will work with Google Home's upcoming Local Devices SDK
Not sure if anyoneโs shared this yet, but thereโs a SanDisk Extreme PLUS 128GB U3 A2 SD card at Best Buy for $20: https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/t/13225981
@tidal bronze Did you score any of the $128 10TB WD Elements drives?
Is that the plex pass price?
i'd like to edit this code so that the LEDs in question turn on by default when power is connected.
https://github.com/IronicBadger/ESP-MQTT-JSON-Digital-LEDs/blob/master/ESP_MQTT_Digital_LEDs/ESP_MQTT_Digital_LEDs.ino
i've been trying for a couple of hours now with no real idea where to start and haven't gotten anywhere yet. can anyone here help out please?
@static prawn have you looked at line 88
@hushed basalt yeah it did nothing
maybe i need to add in a custom 'function' (no idea what they're called in whatever language this is)
that calls the FastLED library to turn on a pre set value
rather than just hack
Yeah sorry I only know python not c++
I know it's not a straight forward answer
But have you looked at node-red long term
@hushed basalt no and i probably need to
but for this use case it won't be ideal
i'm making a project for a few friends several times the same thing
and whilst some of them might run an MQTT server somewhere, most probably won't
LEDs in question turn on to what color? I think it'd have to be hardcoded
so i thought it prudent to give them something that just powered up to a default state and that way if they decided to run an MQTT server, they can customise
white? red? i don't care.
red as it uses less power.
try copying lines 470 to 474 to somewhere near the end of setup(), replacing inR, inG, and inB with the representation of your color
since you said red, 255 0 0
that's actualyl what i was doing as you literally typed
spooky
i'm actually just going to call setColor(255, 0, 0);
Do you want it to flash on start up?
no
Solid colour?
just come on bang solid red
yeah i'm flashing setColor(255, 0, 0); atm
YES!
that's it lads
well actually (0, 255, 0);
but tahnks @open hull and @hushed basalt
is there disagreement between the RGB order in the code and the RGB order of the strip?
should it be GRB?
i guess i should try tweaking that
and that nicely fixes the color picker in HASS too. nice thanks
just doesnt occur to me sometimes (even though i'm modifying the code) that i can tweak this shit sometimes
12 factor apps are crying in their grave
If you wanted to go serious you could put it in a j2 with some variables
But I just started learning node red this week. It's really cool. And build from the ground up for that esp rpi embedded stuff as well

Hmm have to troubleshoot my g68 sensor, car won't shift to forth gear๐

I drive automatic just for german town traffic
After 20 stops in 2km it's just the best to do
While I still was able to drive a rented manual transporter after 1 year automatic just fine tho
#notamericanproblems
Yeah, I rent manuals when I go abroad, no problems
I was just joking anyway :)
But when I'm stuck in queue to and from work for two hours I love my automatic ๐
But I donโt see how distance traveled affects it
It is no joking matter!
Lol
I never got the annoyance in traffic thing but I guess I donโt really get bad traffic
Well you have three roads and five cars in oz
Thatโs a bad ratio
Just put it on the Barbie!
We got 5x the people and would be many times that bigger
24 times bigger at a google
Or like sweden, that has the population living in 20% of the area, and the rest is just forest
Yeah Aus is similar with coastal areas
Mmm sitting inside working in downtown Oslo while the sun is shining

What are the screen devices that are available these days? Just the google hub and echo 5? Are there others. Preferences?
Donโt even know what they are called to do a generic google search for comparisons?
Hmm
Depends.what you want
Generic android tablets have their advantages
But you'll generally just be using chrome on that tablet
Personally i wouldn't get a google home hub or whatever it is myself..but others have them and like them
Not sure what I want.....I have both google and echo. I see them become the phone of the future.
I would say ask @clear ferry but he's a Norwegian so you can't trust anything he says
The only two available right now are google and echo correct?
Home assistant is more of an alternative to google home etc in a lot of ways
So if home assistant is your core you can use whatever you want without lockin
I was really leaning toward google until I learned of echo drop in. Pretty much a home intercom. Can speak with any echo in your house. Guessing any echo in the world but havenโt gotten that far

Reminds me I used to play an IRC-bot game like 20 years ago
with acronyms, it gave us random 3-5 letter acronyms, and we submitted our take on it, and they were presented anonymously in the channel
then everyone voted for the best
I think I was pretty good for a while
Sounds fun ๐
nice, the data roaming price has dropped a bit on my work phone
used to be 89NOK + tax per MB
now it is 4NOK per MB
for the US that is
And you care why?
because it used to mean I could open google maps for 2 seconds before I had used up my quota while travelling ๐คฃ
now I can actually use google maps while in the US
manhattan is usually not a problem, if I connect to one starbucks and one mcdonalds I have wifi througout the city
but the rest of the country it is nice to be able to navigate ๐คฃ
get a map + compass ๐
It can't yell to me while I drive ๐คฃ

@clear ferry Only 10G?!? Not 40G or 100G? What kind of mickey mouse place do you work at? ๐
@light trout do you know if any issues with the component weather alerts
no
Hmm. Doing something wrong and your components are usually the easiest lol
I made it? If so it's probably broken
Ha it is usually me
Most of my custom components are not updated to work with HA > 0.89
Um, excuse me? Mr. Developer, you have to keep all of your projects up to date with changing environments for free. It's the law.
Next week
@light trout That's optimisitic!
not really, I have vacation then
๐ฑ had someone describe their tech stack to me yesterday
Was screaming internally a little bit but was polite
Basically they were using all the wrong tools in the wrong way
details please?
Making their own cicd orchestrator with airflow, putting all their microservices in generic ubuntu vms and assigning permanent ips because kubernetes looks too complicated
It's still the oldschool way tho, and some companies just don't have 50 up to date IT guys where some could just spend a week on new projects but rather have 5 and no time to waste
I know that myself old work vs new work
Yeah I get what you mean
But this was startup, and they were learning/evaluating the stack as well. Not just using what they are already doing
I am new here and just asking. Is there any way to make localisation?
@clear ferry
Found an addition for your rack
https://i.redd.it/h14airdandmy.jpg
Nice!
Nothing like keeping your red wine toasty in a rack
Nice, I love it!
Prefer the beer fridge version!
We rebuilt a Superdome 9000 chassis as a cooled beer tap at work
I will see if I can find some pictures somewhere
https://www.canford.co.uk/Products/13-024_CANFORD-FRIDGE-Rackmount-13U-black <- Canford make the fridge as well!
13-024 | CANFORD RACK FRIDGE | Ideal for OB trucks, studio hospitality etc. 240V AC powered, 65 watts, energy consumption 0.76kWh/24h. 13U height. Depth required 383mm. Colour black.
Should have a version that I could mount directly to the water cooled racks I work with
No shortage of racks around the place where filling half the rack exhausts the amount of power that the DC can provide, and another 65W won't be noticed ๐
To be fair the fridge makes a lot more sense
OB trucks have racks, and a fridge that could slot into them would be super handy
The wine rack just sounds like someone for swanky high end home theatre peeps
Itโd go well in an audio rack
Now that I found cheap shipping from us to Norway I should order some rack effects

Get a 2290 for the history
But yeah rack gear never really interested me
Stomp boxes are simpler
Mmmm TC electronic, I have a few of their stomp boxes, love em
I thought about midi controlled rack gear, like Bellamy from muse, he controls the effect pedals with a Kaosspad
I had their pedal...flashback I think? I sold it though
Oh yeah that Kaosspad stuff is wild
not really something I'd play with personally, I'm incompetent enough are regular stuff
I'm a tinkerer, love making stuff, built a few pedals myself ๐
And I repair music equipment when needed by people
I made two from kits, and I have three that I am halfway through making from PCB and parts that I got
but that was when I moved house and never continued them lol
I have some stuff on wait, for when the baby starts kindergarten๐
Heh fair enough
@ocean mirage Prefer stomp box at home, have a silly size collection. Still tend to use the likes of the HX Effects anytime I've gone live as it's less to cart around. In most live environments, people won't be able to tell the difference between a real Tubedriver and it's Line 6 model equiv ๐
Oh for sure, I get that, but I don't play live :)
I don't get to either all that much any more ๐ฆ
I never have, just fuck around at home
Any live gigs I've done recently have been Irish Traditional music, and they all give you a weird look if you stroll in with a Tele and a pedal board!
but thats my go to lol
Which reminds me, I need to get a nice new Acoustic...
What're you thinking
my acoustic is the worst, but I don't play much acoustic to justify a nice one atm
Been borrowing a Takamine from a friend recently, and it's damn nice to play.

Is the 32 bit version still recommend for the pi4? Or is it now time to switch to 64 bit
Seeing as the Pi4 is a 64bit CPU, it would seem a bit of a waste to run a 32bit OS on it ๐
The Pi3 also has a 64 bit CPU, but on the HA website, 32 bit is still recommend (at least for hassio):
https://www.home-assistant.io/hassio/installation/
You may get compability issues with addons when using 64,
Are there any known issues with addons?
There was, not sure if that still is a thing
#330990055533576204 would be the place to ask about that
@hearty depot I think I see the issue with wienerlinien, should be fixable.
no, way stupider then that ๐

@ocean mirage I've played one concert abroad, but the rest with classmates or work colleagues in bands ๐
@light trout want to use mine again?
should be opendata@wienerlinien.at
meh, no need.
I'll make an update to it, if it still fails I'll mark it as deprecated.
I love how fibre sfp+ is cheaper than copper sfp+
I guess getting 10Gbit in an rj45 over UTP over 30-60 metres is harder than just shooting light down some glass
@hushed basalt 10gbaseT is fairly new, has heat problems and distance problems and is less adopted, hence more expensive
Twinax sucks overall
Nearly every cable in the Med and down by the Sueuz Canal has been replaced with Fibre, and they still have outages thanks to people trying to nick Copper for resale value.
And optics is always preferable
@ocean mirage I've played for 28 years, but I still suck
People like Hibernia and their ilk prefer if they get the resale value of the copper, expecially if it more than pays for the fibre cable ๐
Fibre is so cheap
Assuming the stuff on fs.com is decent enough
Especially for SMB
Only downside with fibre is you can't run unterminated cables without a fusion splicer handy
Barrier for entry for fibre termination is just slightly higher compared to copper
But the connector is so much smaller, much easier to fit through a tight hole, or blow it through a tube
That is true
What connectors are standard now. For SFP+
Also is everything just single mode now
Being able to run alongside power is also a plus. As well as through noisy EMI environments
LC has been the standard for the last 10+ years for end equipment
We went with SC APC for our FOBOTs. Mostly so that technicians couldn't confuse them with our MM ST connectors but yeah LC is everywhere.
Really @young sigil I haven't seen SC in
.. 7 years atleast, I still see ST in military installations because of taps though
SC was standard on 1G Ethernet and 2G FC if memory serves right
Or maybe it was 100Mb Ethernet
Yeah it was an odd choice. Difficult to go back now.
Whatever works, it's just weird ๐ ๐
What are this initialisms?
I haven't seen 40g or 100g (qsfp) patch panels yet, but you get 40g over two wire also
BiDi I think Cisco calls it atleast
Cries in vdsl2+ :'(
In some areas they're even putting in fixed wireless in suburban areas just so they can complete the project quicker

does anyone uses a postinstall script on raspbian ?
like the hassbian scripts? https://home-assistant.github.io/hassbian-scripts/
More like script to enroll the pi in puppet
tryed to use puppet one time - but I have to use 2 machines when I understood it right.
You have the Puppet master, and then clients of it
It doesn't make sense for a single system, it's amazing when you're trying to manage many
I think I had the same ide like repz
having a easy to redeploy system - instead written some bash scripts for now - also fun ๐คฃ
Guys is there any easy way yet to increase the size of the HASSIO disk in the Virtualbox VDI? I messed my config and although I follow the published instructions , stick to dynamic, increase to 15GB, the drive runs out of space after a restore from my snapshot. It seems to be stuck at 6GB

This at work?
got my broadlink mini 3 just now
first thing I am actually gonna set up with HA lol
I set mine up yesterday
Haven't tied it into HA yet though
I'm hoping I can use the inbuilt codes as they already work.
I don't want to have to hand craft air con codes
Yeah I just set up the app with my old panasonic split system
15 degree settings * four fan modes * four operational modes = 240 codes
Nothing in HA yet, need to actually get my hands dirty, I've had it installed for a long time but never used it cause I had no hardware
oh yeah lol
All I had to do was select Panasonic as the brand and the codes worked, its from like 2006 too
so thats good
hopefully works the same for you
Yeah worked well for me
But I believe the homeassistant integration is very manual
I think all those codes are stored in the app not the device
No app, no codes
ahh okay
I think there is some sort of third party plugin that can do stuff with it too but I literally how no experience in adding anything to HA
so I'm not sure how that stuff works
looks like you might be right
But realistically I guess you would only need a few temperatures, im not heating or cooling over or under a certain temp
@junior forge Is it possible to buy some of the awesome HA stickers and have them mailed to Denmark.
I cannot figure out how to figure out what the IP and MAC of my broadlink mini is
I assume its one of the devices that doesn't have a hostname in my DHCP list but who knows
lol its in the app fuck me I can be dumb
hey all, has anyone else noticed a login attempt from google on their home assistant?
Login attempt or request with invalid authentication from 108.177.69.88
@ocean mirage just put all macs you don't know into a mac address translator, see what comes out ๐
Doesn't it have a sticker underneath though?
Thanks, definitely going there when Iโm done cooking dinner
And before you say, yes, itโs shrimp on the barbie
I just want a good smart switch option down under
@ocean mirage Pretty sure the mac address of the mini is on a sticker on the mini. Not at home so can't double check.
Sticker fall off in the box?
Mine has a sticker but no MAC address, sorted now though
@ocean mirage .. i found my mini's mac by looking in known-devices.yaml
and as for smart switches... depends what you want to replace your power points or have an inline switch
I meant replacing light switches
ahh... yeah... tends to be an issue in Aus... coz a lot of buildings use live switching and don't have a ground at the switch.
Ah right, I have heard something of the sort
I just donโt really want to do smart bulbs
@ocean mirage there's a good community forum and there's plenty of options in Aus now for certified switches
If you start from the top there's a few you can get now, depends if you want wifi, zigbee, zwave etc
Okay, thanks mate
too easy mate

So I recently decided to automate my sleeping. So the software I am using for this is Sleep as droid, Tasker and a HomeAssistant plugin for Tasker. Most of it pivots on sleep as droid with its sleep income feature.
So 30 minutes before the time I should be sleeping it sends out a notification, this triggers a automation in takser that sets the mainlight in my room to 50% warm white and turns the light by my bed on. after 30 minutes is up it turns off all my lights.
In the morning when sleep as droid goes off, it turns my light on to cool white. Very simple automations, but it seems to be ennought to trick my body into sleeping
@hushed basalt I found this custom component to be good for setting up my broadlink mini 3 with my aircon, since you were gonna do the same https://github.com/smartHomeHub/SmartIR
got lots of aircon codes too
Ah that's awesome thanks
Nice, I'm going to use my broadlink with an older AC too

@dark sparrow the truth is 'code' isn't always the best choice
Tables and charts are incredibly powerful
Even for high level business logic for mega corporations
jokes on you, i cant code at all
but i am more than aware than tables and charts are incredibly powerful
Programmers tend to think code is the answer to everything
So the whole business becomes dependant on them
And I say this as a programmer
Even the CIA has spreadsheet driven logic
well flow based stuff is more understandable as its close to how brains work: Action -> Does this action need something else? -> Do action.
And thats why im now in love with node-red
alltho im a bit stuck on conditions
Wonder wtf I did this time, both tuya devices I flashed yesterday show the same data in home assistant
