Those wire nuts are life changing. I will always spend the extra money to get those if I'm planning anything with electronics
never heard of those, gotta get myself some
They're called Wago lever-nuts if you wanted to find them
thanks
fu.. No smart switches for me - the seccond switch underneath reads 230v with a multimeter.. but I get only a wired clickering..
not a healty sound 🤷
Yeah. Lever-wagos are awesome!
That would have been the coolest shit in the 90s. Still pretty cool today, ngl
hi everybody! doas anybody know if https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32888117548.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.3.2c9c13b2W14KEU&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.13338.136569.000000000000000&scm_id=1007.13338.136569.000000000000000&scm-url=1007.13338.136569.000000000000000&pvid=c35e3ead-b9ea-4724-84cc-61b0890a4ca6 works with a tasmoted sonoff rf and therefor with ha? or does someone have a nice tipp with emergency button for my gramma is best?

@clear ferry I think it depends on the rss backend
Those query parameters just get passed along to the webserver afaik. It's up to them if they do anything with it or not
This might do what you want. Although I don't speak French
Hey anyone have any idea how I can display upcoming google calendar events in a list, the google calendar integration seems to only look at the next event
Trying to get a nice agenda for my front end
Oh I just figured since I was asking for suggestions not support 😅
I’m new to discord lol
Just opend my WD Elements 8tb external HDD
WD80EMAZ
I think I did not win in the WD lottery
There is no losing, those are still good drives afaik
jsut googleing WD Reds are preferred since they function better in a RAID because of TLER
just checking with smartctl
SCT Error Recovery Control:
Read: 70 (7.0 seconds)
Write: 70 (7.0 seconds)
they seem to support TLER
As far as I know they are basically reds still
wont use them in RAID aynway - only bummer is that I have to move them out of the chasing into another one T_T
eww.. already hearing HDD clickering
Yeah, but for this type of storage, as you know, HDD is still king
just read that ssd will loose their data after 4 years without power
oh no, you dont want loose data ;)
I haven't grabbed the WD because of way too many reports of failure within 2 years, also they're in deal like once every month and that is bit too suspicious. I took a Seagate
I’ve never heard that but anything either way is anecdotal
the helium drives seem to be extremely loud compared to smaller drives that I used to have. The 2TB Samsung I have is almost impossible to hear when suspended with rubber bands
I can’t say I’ve really noticed over fans tbh
My 2TB samsung drive died a long time ago
Samsung weren't known for their hard drives that's for sure
Samsung isn't known for anything good anymore anyway
Oh wait the SSD's are good
- The End
Not making memory anymore?
My Samsung 3TB external has lived far longer than it has any right to
Is anyone using one of these Lenovo smart tablets? It looks very slick, just wondering if there are any hidden caveats
@hearty depot posted a message that is too long, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/PWnks2KvF4/
@boreal pewter I've been running wd for the last 12 years, a single failure over 20 drives and 24/7 power and usage
@hearty depot the emaz are good afaik, I have 4 x10tb of those from shucking external drives a few days ago
the cases ar'nt 😅 still fighting with does not start on physical sector boundary. stupid emulation I guess
The emaz are just reds with different firmware as far as I found out
mhmm.. overwriting firmware ? 🤣
Now that I have venv and hassio, and native ha on my Chromebook, I should try out running in a freenas jail and try HP-UX also
manic scientist laughter
Try android and ios 😉
Python 2.7 is the latest I could find for hpux though
build it yourself 😉
On Itanium? Maybe 😛
I'll give it a go just for laughs when I have time
Openvms is also 2.7
Read about HA+NodeRED on an android phone 🤣 that works actually
been at least a year
@clear ferry nice, as said it just turned me off. 1/3 of Amazon reviews in my country are failures after x months
Bad luck I guess 🤷 I've had 1 drive failure in 18 years, total probably 60 drives or something
But anyway I need a new car 😦
You could have bought my old Audi A8L, but it is too late !
I have only had one bad HDD fail so far, that was the day I started with backups 😛
Not gonna take an A8 😛
A8L!
I just sat in an BMW 1, X2 and X4 and overall I'm undecided 😄
All are shite imo 😛
Go for a Troll
Only BMWs I would consider are X5, 8series or 7series 😛
omg jeez
Honestly the X4 is appearing HUGE considering it's 4,7m length. Even my old 728i from 1996 was almost 5m
And that thing is just fkn huge
My A8L was 5.2 if memory serves right
I bought my wife a Tiguan last year, I wanted a touareg, but she wanted to drive it too 😂
I'm living in a big town where parking spare is pretty rare but I not gonna get an Opel Corsa just bcz of that
I tried parking in a regular parking spot with the Audi once, my back tires weren't even inside the square
lul people at the shopping mall loved you
But I could fit atleast 20 Thai women in the trunk 🤷
Oh "shopping" I c
And two ice giants in the back seat
That's a pretty specific number that I doubt is purely hypothetical now 🤔
Check the picture of the legroom
Let me check the price
With the seat all the way forward
lol 2223,10€
Yeah, I bought it for 60.000 nok, owned it for 4 years and repaired it for 110.000nok roughly, and sold it for that price as a repair object, but I drove it 75k km in 3 years 😛
Nice
Had to order bushings from Sibir, because Audi had stopped producing them
Can recommend these guys
Couldn't even clean the dashboard off for the pictures 🤣
But in the background you see again why the countries over there are considered beautiful
"grunnet familieforøkelse." that's what you are calling HA now? 😛
@light trout it's a kind of child 🤷
it is 😛
My baby is "Roby" how I call my Xiaomi Roborock
If I spend as much time with my future child as I do working on my home automations our child will have all the attention they could ever want
Issue with that is that you can't stop or revert back to last know working state
Just nuke the whole thing and get a new one
Oh I could bring in some bad humor
Ali have those?
Is there good humor in this channel? Must have missed it... 😉
I usually have my baby on my lap while working with ha, both get equal attention 😛
And I bring her with me when I install sensors and switches
She even supervised when I made my custom IKEA tradfri lights
Perfect for testing if the breaker is off
oooooh pretty lights 😄
So you got your own debugging-roboter-KI which is testing your sensors 😄
She tests the humidity ones by chewing on them 🤷
That is a great durability test
speaking of IKEA, when are the smart blinds ariving?
Late summer I believe was what they were estimating
which year?
I want the speakers now
Have no need for them in october... I need them now.. NOW!
But you'll also need them in October 😄
Move North of the Arctic circle, then you don't need them at all in winter
tempting
They're going to release them right when most people won't really need them
Especially their core demographic
I used to live in Harstad, nice place 😛
Shitehole
I lived there for 2 years
But I might move back if I get that job in Houston
I don't think I'd last in a place with no daylight
I would love that
@unreal orbit the perpetual darkness is soothing, the perpetual sunlight is not
Soothing? Or a reminder of the eternal dark abyss that we are inevitably heading toward?
I guess it could be both
I prefer it, then I can decide the amount of light
If you haven't seen the movie insomnia I recommend it, the us remake is ok, but the Norwegian original is amazing, and filmed in my hometown
Subtitles translate well enough?
HARD pass
I sense I discord movie night coming up 😉
Dang, I only see green like that a few days out of the year here
Most of may to early September here
The only green here is stuff on my table to smoke
Por que no los dos?
DOS6.22?
☝ for a second, I thought it was Windows XP wallpaper!
Did you hear the startup sound in your head @last plaza ? 🤓
almost 😂
Isn't that your ringtone?
I use iPhone, and those apple idiots don't let you have custom ring tones that easily. They are a pain in the rear!
Getting an XS Max for work and maybe I switch to it privately as well

Play ZombsRoyale.io - 100 player 2D real-time massive multiplayer Battle Royale game in your browser, inspired by PUBG/Fortnite.
So very handy.
now that is strange, today my google home mini just says "I can't do that here, but you can ask me to play on one of your other devices" when I ask it to play something from spotify
never happened before
Finnish people make weird music
2 days ago it refused to work completley - something like i cant do that at the moment try it in a few secconds again
A band that specialises in covering songs in Ompa-style
@light trout is so silent, one could almost suspect he's actually busy at his dayjob 🤔 could it be ? 🤔
yeah...
I'll come over with some ☕ and 🥖 for you
Sounds good 👍
nice, maybe I can reuse my 10y old qnap as a HA-server
You can install debian directly on the box if you want
Still have 3.97TB to move from it to my new nas though
The song is about "Losing at lottery again"
@orchid rose yeah, but all their songs are covers I think ? right ? 🤣
Probably my favorite finnish song
Even though I don't understand finnish, but I know the meaning, and the music is more important than the lyrics anyway 🤣
you probably listen to more finnish music than I do 😄
so I'm sure all the curse words are familiar now
and some bad pickup lines
what use do wow players have for those? 🤔
picking up older men pretending to be younger girls of course 🤷
ah, right
the internet, where men are men, women are men and little girls are fbi agents
hooray, they wife got accepted to a masters degree in information security, I think she is going to make more money than me 🤣
does anyone here use routines with google home ?
Now you can retire then 😉
I use the Good Night routine, but I'm looking for ways to automate that as well now that my bed occupancy sensor works
hmmm I can't get any routines to work, if I create a new one she just says "can't help you with that" and if I try to use any of the built in ones she doesn't actually do anything that they are configure d to do 🤔
weird, I've had no issues myself
other than that they are pretty limited on what you can do
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM5By4CmVxw ooof I wish I was this good
This is my bass cover of Evermore by Transatlantic on the fantastic album "The Whirlwind". Great bass line by Pete Trewavas. Hope you'll like it! Gear used :...

why must dutch musik be so weird
no wait
this is german
🤣
it looked like a dutch band I saw a few years ago
LOL I just chose to "close all other tabs than this one" in firefox
and it asked me "do you want to close 291 tabs"
it's not ?

Actually
it is not a language
it is a bad mixup between dutch and german
referring to Dutch people trying to do German, but fail at it
@junior forge That video reminds me of the "Last Friday Night". This is not a good thing
so it sounds german, but is dutch
hahah @strange vapor 😂
To make matters worse, it is a Belgium band, so actually it is Flamisch with a weird German accent and some german words.
Stupid Flanders !
Last Friday Night wins for the epic sax solo from Kenny G 😃

Dutch is anyway stolen from German so they actually speak retarded-german all day anyway
Funny tho I was just quickly in the netherlands like 2 weeks ago because I was checking a car in the near and did some shopping. Eventhough they have no unlimited speed roads as we germans do have, up to 100Km/h they drive crazier than we do
I think germany is the only european country that has that
Norway has a max of 110, sweden of 130 afaik
Another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V64vWQMDKjM
Gestapo Knallmuzik performing 'Heel die Tag Pörno', live at Studio Brussel in Belgium on March 21th, 2019. // SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/stubruscribe http://ww...
At least one thing our politic does right lol
I usually end up doing 130-150 anyway, because I work at night and the roads are empty 🤣
Honestly if I couldn't head with 220km/h from cologne to Erfurt which is almost 400km and like half of it is unlimited I would really miss something and probably get 3 tickets per tour
For some reason Youtube just suggested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLrnkK2YEcE to me. There's a blast from the past.
The video for The Avalanches 'Frontier Psychiatrist' directed by Kuntz and Macquire
Meh, I drive 30-40.000km per year, the norwegian speed limits are enough for me, because the country isn't flat or square like those stupid eurocountries 🤣
Luckily I don't have to drive that much anymore. I used to work in the next big town so 100km per day, that way I had to calculate up to 500€ fuel per month
yeah, I'm glad I have all gas, tollbooths and food included at work 🤣
Why is my network so slow 😦
300gb movies and pictures from my cameras with roughly 3mb/s I hate this timecapsule
Apple product, burn it 🔥
I ll.. after I get my data out of it
or maybe selling 🤔 there are more then enough apple nuts out there
say steve jobs touched it once
its actually working better then the D-link share center I got 🤣
Have found no decent "prosumer" NASs
prosumer.. I like that
Running a HP Microserver with lots of spinning rust 😄
I'm way happyer with an Raspberry pi or any other linux host I can configure then all the other stuff I had
I get the Apple products thrown at me from work. MacBook Pro 1TB, 16GB RAM and i7, next is the iPhone xs max 256GB 👌
@strange vapor I'm loving freenas after starting to use it late last year
so I ordred a 12 bay dell server from the US to expand since my current box only has 4 bays 🤣
Btw - how you feed your plex service?
via freenas
then an fstab?
don't feed it after dark
plex is running as a iocage on freenas, I just mount the shares where the files are directly to the iocage
next thing to look up 😹
think of it as a docker, just for bsd 🤷
Someone got an tip for me how I get read, write or mount user folders to an container? I try to use the linuxserver nextcloud container with a docker-compose - but I got something wrong there
@clear ferry For what I'm doing, a simple Debain install providing NFS and Samba works grand.
aww - new comand to run on this apple product of hell
badblocks -b 512 -wsv /dev/sd1
I've been going next level on docker
Writing my own dockerfiles for my own apps
I like docker. It's elegant
Once you keep it simple, it's great! Main issue I've seen with it is old school devs who don't understand the simple part.
I honestly wish I was joking, but I came across a Docker image which during build just ran yumdownloader to pull down a whole heap of rpms and leave them there. Then on boot, it would us rpm with the rpmdb set to /dev/null to install them in a certain order, some of them overwriting the files of the others.
When asked a very very incredulous "Why?!" it turned out that there was something in the %post script that depended on a variable in a single file which was being supplied when the docker instane booted.
Their Chef job followed the same logic, which as it turned out had been migrated from a system called Bladelogic.
Mostly fixed now, but took a while
They now deploy a single RPM with a proper config file and no %post
About 5% of the size of the pervious monstrousities.
As norwegian, you basically speak the same language 🤔
Well, you should hear me trying to remember what it is called while discussing with the wife
Sounds like I'm reciting an Icelandic Saga , or calling forth cthuluh 😞
Fjötur? Rathur? Farthär? Fhürtha?
As a swede, I don’t quite get that particular one either...
Perkele! You’re on to me!
Hyvä perse!
hey now, it's post-#metoo world, that's not cool anymore!
is this a glass fiber connection over a wet cord?
I shouldnt be surprised that my PR actually worked in my main setup (sending images w/ twilio), but it does 🎉
So im trying to run du -h --max-depth=1 to figure out what takes up space, but I can’t seem to find what is taking up almost 90% of my main drive. Anyone know any methods?
I have tried many different commands but I just don’t understand what is taking up almost 400g
Largest I get with command above is 11g which is the VAR folder
What is the output of df -h ?
And du -a | sort -n -r | head -n 5
If you are standing in /
So only 8% used 😛
Maybe it was related to the snapshot trying to backup also share folder
Always help to ask:)
best filesystem for Windows/Hippie/Hipster OS?
NTFS or rather exFAT?
does it make any difference in SSD era anyway?
well. Windows wont take my ext4 drives wich I actually use now almost everywhere
well ntfs works fine, so I'd just go with that
formated one drive already this way - but I dont know much bout the filesystems
Tryed to set up nextcloud - failed somehow xD
NTFS is..
Meh for anything else than windows, but it "works" in most other os
4GB limit is pretty limiting nowadays though. NTFS is pretty well supported as well nowadays
SMB 4 lyfe
nay to fat32 - many videos I shoot having around 10 gig - 4k is stupid
Then do network sharing, or internet sharing
I use owncloud for sharing with family and friends
Locally everything I have communicates via SMB
I use owncloud for sharing with family and friends
I just clean up all my older drives - thanks to the new 8TiB WD - thats how I come to the idea formating the old drives
I find usb drives too unreliable, and the limitations of cross supported filesystems flaky at best
network drives can be very useful, but if you want internal drives and need windows, just use ntfs
(here i stand in the rain.. running all my cool stuff from an old macbook with only USB2.1)
I'm a bit worried about the external WD I bought. It runs much hotter than I'm used to with a properly cooled PC. I've had no disk issues even with a WD green that isn't supposed to be used like I use it. The constanly parking head (or something?) was many multiples over the specced number when I checked a year or two ago
deam - its realy a little warm (35° at least)
I don't know how to check the temperature of the external drive, but the internals have maxed at 32C
my 10tb ones are 48c right now
still copying 24\7 from old nas
let me check my 4TB ones in the qnap also
from my experience the temperature makes a massive difference to the life of these drives, but it's only based on a few disks so it could be just random variation
my WD green has 6 years of power on time now. 1.2 million load/unload cycles
so tests online show that they usually run 10-20 degrees above ambient temperature, and my garage is 25c atm, so 35-45 is normal it seems
that's what I was afraid of... That seems rather high
4tb drives are running at 36c
in comparison to the WD with 1.2 million load/unload, my 8½ year-old Samsung drive has 5889 cycles...
cool - not even remotly finished - but already having 16 bad sectors on this old drive
that drive probably won't survive much longer then 😛
how large is it even if it's that old?
1.3 TB - I dont know for shure - but feels like it
that thing was huuuuuge back then
must have been around 2007 - befor I got my first APPLE nas 🤣
aaahhh... I hope that thing ll nurn in hardware hell
I remember my 20MB drive 🤣
But I'm not very worried about the temperatures here either, one drive has failed for me in this house, and the temps are the same every year 🤷
my storage has always been in my garage
my fear is only based on a feeling, not really statistics or anything scientific
interesting graph. Couldn't find a more recent one unfortunately
last time I had a HDD failure I sent WD the serial number and a smart report
got a new in the mail, didn't have to return the old one
that's pretty cool. How long are the guarantees for these? 1 or 2 years?
from a google study
The figure shows that failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend.
2 years for all drives I have owned
*fastly gooleing how to pull smart reports
@hearty depot Take the HD out, open it up, and there's a tiny little thermal printer next to the SATA port which prints it out...
That study is pretty old. Not sure why that would change anything though
It won't
instructions unclear.. stuck in HDD with penis
I've seen the same thing at work, huge SANs with 400+ drives, if the cooling stops I hardly see failures go up
but if the drives are too close to the floor, those drives will fail more
there were even some firmwares that caused drives under 20c to go into write through mode
and disable cache
so I strongly advise my customers against having perforated floors in front of SANs
reminds me about the screaming at the SAN video, let's see if I can find it
Brendan Gregg from Sun's Fishworks team makes an interesting discovery about inducing disk latency. For more details, see Brendan's blog entry: http://blogs....
Reminds me of the datacenter that lost a ton of data due to the CO fire extinguishers
haha, that's pretty cool
@hearty depot had a DC with 5 SANS get all the inergen gas released at once, the DOORS buckled outwards
there was an increase in latency for a few seconds
but no increase in disk failures
In previous gig, we had had a whole slew of alerts one day that a lot of kit in the DC was shutting down due to getting too hot. We had had no notification from the DC that anything was wrong.
I got sent up in the Van while my manager tried to get through to anyone in the DC.
Turns out the mains water had burst the previous day. While the cooling system is self contained, it required constant top ups from mains to keep running.
I pulled into the yard to see a human chain passing in the bottles of water you see in Water Coolers being passed in!
LOL
Amazingly, we lost no kit or HDs, but a few racks over from us (shared floor) there was SANs in a not very happy place.
Kinda reminded me about when I was doing some switch config in my old job, suddenly got disconnected and though, heck what now ? then it came back, and that happened 2-3 times, I suspected bad power, went onsite, saw the door.. leaking, the room was pretty self contained and the water had penetrated a crack in the side, and filled up,and flooded out when I opened the door, the water was just bouncing up barely reaching the switch I recon 🤣
@clear ferry Seems legit?
I got no p90s and need a good acoustic
hmmm
I've never got the big urge for a high number of guitars though, maybe cause I know I'd just pick my Tele up first anyway
@ocean mirage https://relish.swiss/innovation/guitar-pickup-swapping
The new standard in Relish Guitars: Our patented Pickup Swapping System enables you to swap pickups within seconds and adjust the height with two…
Haha someones finally tried this sort of thing again
way back when Tony Iommi was involved in some fast swap pickup guitar company
17 pickup selector positions lol no thanks
not that I would benefit from fast pickup swapping anyway, im fine with the slow way
interesting though
Also every expensive.
I don't think I would really have a use for a 7 string, nor be any good at it lol
barritones are cool for sure, but again I'd probably not use it as much
dobros are cool :)
@ocean mirage I was given a 5-string Warwick Rockbass by a friend to try out. Turns out that low B is extremely damn handy 😄
Only 7 string I've enjoyed is a Ibanez s series, so I might buy one when i go to Japan 😂
@strange vapor I've drooled for a Yamaha TRB6p for... 20 years
@strange vapor I had a 5 string bass but it wasn't a good one, seems squier 5 strings have really flabby Bs even if its thicc
I never used the B anyway, not for what I was playing, since I for the most part just have fun with covers
My brother has a 7 string guitar, but he plays metal and whatnot so it makes more sense for him
@ocean mirage This is a cheap ass Warwick, but it was setup by custom shop who know what they're doing (Dolmen Guitars). Really nice to play.
Warwick are supposed to be nice, I assume that includes the cheap ones
The Great 7 string sound of Nevermore is what I long for on a 7 string
I can setup things fine but the guitar has to be constructed fine too lol
something to do with what happens after the nut, length and angle to the tuning peg I guess
If I got a extended guitar I'd be more interested in clean playing with base lines and stuff on top that riffing, but I would suck at doing that
I bought a cheap ass guitar via Kickstarter two years ago just as a platform to learn how to setup a guitar. Turned out to be a great thing, once I upgraded the hardware!
Yeah cool :) its a fun thing
I put together a strat from used parts, that was nice. Ended up liking it more than my American Deluxe Strat so I sold it lol
https://www.fool-audio.com/Fool_Audio_Research/Malcontent.html Paid less than €200. The elctronics on it were shit, so all DiMarzio now. Got some help lowering the action a small bit.
Yeah cool :) doing setups is fun, and nice once you get it where you like
I also like the electronics part
I built a telecaster from rando parts va few years ago
Guess I'll ask again (: Anybody here who's using a smart power strip? Smart power extension.. I'm looking something that does integrate well with HA and has power meter
@tawny pebble I'm using a APC 1U Powerstrip thing. Just using snmp sensor to monitor it.
Probably a bit industrial for what you're talking about 😃
@strange vapor yes, way too Pro 😂
tp-link has a kasa power strip
i think it works with the HA tp-link integration
not sure if it has power metering though
@amber bramble yup i saw it but can't seem to find the DE outlets. and anyway, was hoping to find someone who is using it so to have direct feedback.
Interesting thing I found is this:
https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/ZEOOTA-Wifi-Smart-Power-Strip-4-EU-outlets-with-4-USB-ports
I have never flashed tasmota, before buying something i can only use in half (like done already :/ ) it would be a great idea to ask around and see
I can help you flash tasmota if you need help, I've done a few plugs 😛
Please don't flash people. This is a family friendly server

@clear ferry 😆 true! yeah see how it goes, it's a project for september as I'm going holiday in a week and returning in middle august.
Home and then Wacken!
thanks mate for always being so available in helping
Hi all, well a bit off topic but I would like to share a complete guide of my ci/cd setup with gitea and drone. Should I post in the forum? If yes, where to post?
Hello there, by mistake i press STOP instead of restart.I have the ssh close.Any way to start home assistant?
@midnight adder restart the machine
You know your smart house is growing when you are starting to consider moving your /24 net to a /23 net
lmao @clear ferry are you having any issues? you must have over 100 IoT devices lol
I have a lot of stuff in general, just 50 vms in my lab, a bunch of network switches in a network lab, and now iot on top of that 😂
also just heard a report from coca cola today attempting to prepare grocery stores for their death in 2025 since supposedly everything will have a sensor... time to move to /16? lol
I have more than a 100 devices for sure in iot, but not only wifi
https://adage.com/article/digital/local-grocery-store-2025/293677 I guess it's a design thing, so probably not 2025
lol well of course I thought you might have a lot of networking equipment as well 😉
I work with some smart store projects, they do weighted shelves to track items being picked up and put down, and the carts have device trackers in them to see shopping patterns
also, my god that's a lot of vms. containers? lol
This has been going on for years
No containers here, I'm a VM guy 😛
Or I lie, I have 3 containers also
haha I am currently working on a fourth container for a small app I'm doing
If I had the computing resources, yes, 50 vms
but I'm struggling to get my nas up atm
Deployed 6x3TB memory systems to a grocery store two years ago for sap Hana analytics, so it's definitely nothing new though 😛
yeah, the analytics has been there for awhile. What about the IoT for consumers though?
The convenience factor and potential automation of reordering perishables/consumables will probably make it much more difficult for grocery stores
kinda like amazon warehouses taking over old mall lots lol
Yeah, video is hard, so pressure sensors and monitoring their own stuff is the way to go
Then correlate the data
interesting
yeah
how about amazon go though? they use video. Probably just supplemental though
I think they use all those sensors as well
The us is different, Norway has strict surveillance laws
Yeah, I'm not allowed to catch any public road or my neighbors houses on my surveillance cams
huh, man I don't know I should probably check the laws here
out of curiosity what do you use home assistant for?
and do things break a lot?
and more importantly, if they do, are you okay with it?
Everything, often, because I'm a tool, so I blame myself
lol!
good reasoning ☝
anything you love that you find yourself coming back to with automation?
I try to automate most things, but still have to keep some things manual because of the baby
when even the wife goes hey, that would be nice you know you are doing something right
haha yup!
interesting, I bet that you're learning a lot more about user experience and your home that way!
yeah, home automation started with me wanting to make a smart lamp for the nursery, then it spun out of control 🤣
now I am building a custom fully integrated greenhouse in HA, most of the lights in the house are smart and more and more of the daily routines are being automated and monitored
That's great
I've noticed similar effects after being bitten by the smart home bug
Thank goodness I have the economy to sustain it, or else it might be like a debt inducing gambling addiction
It's like once you have these things you realize how much easier you can make your life it you created an automation
haha
good point!
hoping that when I'm working it'll be like that too
for now, I'm going into grad school
so probably going to be broke anyways 😄
I'm nowhere as good as Tinkerer, Vasiley or the others, but I try
I did vocational training, started engineering, but dropped out after a year, I'm not good with school 🤣
tbh I pay attention but I haven't gotten on the dev train yet.
I feel it
school can be pretty boring
I wasn't going to do a masters until I learned about the possibility of hanging out in a big makerspace 😃
actually through this experience I feel like I can really get into IoT and develop some useful things
Hoping that they'll be useful for more than just +1
this is what I'm doing https://gix.uw.edu
We collaborate across borders and boundaries to innovate on local and global challenges. About Us
my wife is doing her masters in cyber\security\threat now
that was my other thing I would be interested in. But I'm leaning on IoT because I love interacting with physical things or using data to do so.
honestly, props to your wife 😃
gotta be hard to learn about how easy it is to break into pretty much everything.
yeah, you are going to get some kind of job with an IOT education 🤣
lol
she delivered her bachelor while 7 months pregnant
well, maybe it'll just be a hobby
haha that's epic!
your wife sounds like an amazing person
and congrats on your child 😄
Not sure if there are a lot of consumer IoT jobs at the moment, but I have background in networking and programming, so feeling like I can get a job at least to tide over the expense until I really know what I want
thanks!
I actually discussed with an electrician friend
he said.. there was only one guy doing IOT
and I went like
wtf
so the consumer market hasn't started blooming yet
so getting in NOW or sometime soon is probably smart
because that shit is going to blow up
Tertiary education would be cool in a way but I never went
trust me, I wasn't going to go
Until I saw some cool stuff.
then I was like please let me enjoy this without having financial issues lol
I concidered doing some education now, but, I have quite a bit of training, I am the only guy doing a lot of products in the whole country and I have 15 years experience, I don't know what more an education could give me 🤷
Yeah thats fair
but yeah, here's to IoT being something that's in everyone's lexicon 🍻
depends on where you're going. Program I'm in has at least one software dev w/14yrs experience
I could definitely learn more and make it easier to get work elsewhere in the same field
If I won the lottery I'd probably study music though :)
nice 😄
yeah, I have 5 open job offers right now and I have atleast $15.000 more than most of my collegues, don't think struggeling with math for 3 years would be worth it for me, would probably only make me more angry 🤣
tbh getting to that point you probably don't need education
but for my junior level I'm interested in learning more about the business side and design side of creating a product
@ocean mirage you could be like me, tonedeaf and rythmblind
And learning some sweet new tech too, of course!
math has been something I've had a tough time applying in my day to day
so yeah, not worth it for me either 😛
what kinda music @ocean mirage ?
for some reason I excelled in chemistry and physics in my first year of engineering training, but flunked math
probably because the first ones are interesting 🤷
that's intruiging
hahaha
yeah!
I actually love math, fav subject
Just had a hard time actually using it outside of class lol
and now that I haven't studied it for a year, I've forgotten mostly everything
I struggle to do multiplication nowadays
pretty much rely on computers for everything
I just go ok google and what is 64 times 128
😲
And see how wrong I am from Google 😛
sometime's tech is funny though
I got an Amazon Echo Auto for my car recently
And...
When I gave it directions to a destination, it told me the right numbers
But then when Google Maps got it, it was the wrong numbers
I would like to get a newer iot car, my collegue uses HA to start the webasto in the winter when he unplugs his phone in the morning 🤣
And it turned out that the location was on the other side, in the freeway, so I was navigated twice to this spot on the freeway....
LOL
yeah, I have a 2000 right now
because I do 30-40.000km per year, so I need something cheap to maintain 🤣
which my old 2000 Audi A8L was not, so now I drive a Golf MK4
easy to maintain is def a plus
bought the wife a 2014 model last year for the baby though
hmm, are you in Germany?
but I had a Chrysler Town And Country the last time I was in the US, nice car
Interesting
I think the most popular cars here are Toyota & Honda
Sounds fancy to drive in one though
almost 50% of all cars sold in Norway right now are electric
but that is because the state is subsidising them
man, we gotta get on that here
most popular brands are VW\Toyota\Nissan
that's pretty rad
all three because they deliver electric cars
and big manufacturers don't really have electric yet, right?
I mean
They are experimenting?
like, a tesla full price would be $150.000 here, but you can get it for $50.000 because of state subsidising
people don't give a shit about the enviroment, just saving money though ;)
that's pretty crazy
hahaha
right right
well it's a step in the right direction, at least
they were supposed to stop subsidising after 50.000 cars or something, that is way past now, and they are deliberating how to end it
lol
because the electric cars have had free parking and free tollboths too
woah
that sounds wild
to be in norway right now
I mean it's not a huuuge thing but it kinda is pretty great
a decent savings for everyone
But there's gotta be a cost...?
that is what happens when you have people who only care about the enviroment and not how to properly fund a country in the drivers-seat
YEah
so we are losing tons of money every year
We have that here, in Seattle, to
o
except I think the problems are a bit... worse
We just don't want cars... at all
instead the city is pushing for biking everywhere
but it rains quite a bit here
so... yeah. Every year there's another extra payment/obstacle for vehicles
most recently it's been removing lanes from cars and giving them exclusively to bikers. And then there's the 150% increase in vehicle licensing fees
the state told everyone to buy diesel in the late 00's
then now diesel cars are taxed higher since '15
🤷
oof
but... electric cars are hyped at least
sad for all those old cars
diesel used to be the cheapest
now it's more expensive.
yeah...
it's cold
ouch
so a electric car that does 150km in summer, will do less than 100 in winter
Battery+cold == not the best idea
and I have 120km to and from the office
wow
Move
well, if I accept the job offer I have at hand now I will have 4000km to the office @light trout but I will only have to go once a month 🤣
Worth it!
I might accept an offer in Houston 🤣
lol
He is special
yeah, we'll see, I need to look into the finer details first, like salery and hours and more
well, the thing is, I won't relocate, just do 1 week every month in houston, then the other three weeks wherever I want in Norway
still a decent amount of stress I'd think to do everything
But my mom was a flight attendant for 45 years
Soz went afk. Not sure what categorisation music degrees have
haha classical is one I'd think.
flight attendant must be so cool though
had a friend who worked with automation on oilrigs, he had diamond in every airline you can think of
my father wanted me to become a pilot 🤣
it's... an incredible amount of work
aye, probably fun though
Yeah I imagine that classical and jazz are the two big ones, jazz being closer to what I like
jazz is for.. strange people
I knew a guy who could identify any chord \ note \ beat, kinda music autist
My little brother loves jazz, he’s primarily a trumpeter
It’s fairly straightforward for the most part
I'm sort of out guys. going to code a thing but I'll be seeing what's up from time to time 😄
have fun with the music and keep with it @ocean mirage !
Closest to Jazz I listen to is probaby David Sylvian - Secrets Of The Beehive I think it is categorized as Avantgard Jazz
Basic improv ain’t hard
Nice talking with you too
byeeeee @serene escarp
You too, cya
good luck with everything I'll talk to you guys next time 😄
oof, all 10TB of storage moved from the qnap to the freenas
and all permissions fixed
What, you didn't rsync them over 😛
No, it was a bleeding mess of 10y of data 😂
Ouch
But I also got sonarr and qbittorrent running in jails
Woo
And backup from freenas to Google drive of my owncloud shares
Now just waiting for that Dell server from the us 😛
So I can pool all my drives in a single box
But I'm going to install Debian on my qnap, and run ha there 😂 😂 😂
That'll be the strangest install in here I believe
ad a VM or youre ditching the qnap software?
Bare metal debian
aww
Bare metal FTW 😛
true - I like it when something like this is possible on 'consumer products'
not enough by far
Oh :(
fill all available slots with LRDIMMS
There's still 4 slots empty but the guy I got the ram from ran out of 16gb dimms :(
First world problems 😄
Doesn't look like you are using it anyway lol
I got 96GB I could run in my server but only got 32GB in llol
Hahaha it was my VM host but now I've just replaced esxi with Ubuntu
lol and there I'm to stingy to buy new dimms - just running from 8 Gigs
eh if you are running fine nbd
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 7914 2881 682 58 4349 4673
Swap: 3956 438 3518
meeeh
Ooodles of headroom there
Don't make me pull out my ESXi host again :rofl
My Pi3 feels slighted 😛
Did you see the pcie mod that some guy did to a pi4?
Yeah, crazy stuff 😄
Mind you, now that ZWave2MQTT supports MQTT Discovery, I can finally plan a migration off my Pi3 to my old (i7) laptop
(all I need is some time to do that in... which in the last few months has been in short supply)
😮
I think I have a picture of a DL980 that I repaired once
It had 196 cores if memory serves right, and ran windows 2008
Task manager was hilarious
WTF, why would you try to run Windows on something like that 🤔
Damn you win
@clever mortar legacy application, but actually multi thread support
See, I'd have wanted to slap a VM platform on there, to make Windows run faster 😛
@south gull waiting to replace it with a gen8 with 512gb soon
@clever mortar have you ever worked with state systems..... 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛
I have had the pleasure of replacing a legacy Windows system, with a Xen platform on the same hardware, to run the same version of Windows. The result was something more responsive 😉
Too much rain here of late to BBQ anything 😄
I thought you were hinting with a euphamism about our showoffs 🤣
I should redo the logic of my lights.. I dont want to - thats so much friggleing
I went through that with the living room lighting automations - it was worth it in the end
For a start, I broke out all the common parts into automations that controlled booleans, resulting in the others becoming much simpler
bath, toilet and entrance - so all I automated
I have 2 seperate instances, the first turns lights on the other one off 🙈
why do I have to make this stuff so complicated
@clear ferry finally took your advice with SMB 4 lyfe
I just edit a samba share over a samba share 🤣
lol - bad parenting smbd.service: Supervising process 7432 which is not our child. We'll most likely not notice when it exits.
hi! I'm trying to build my first homelab ever and migrate my rPi homeassitant to it.... I just got an Intel NUC. I'm trying to decide what hypervisor to use. But now I think I don't understand a few concepts.. What is LXC/LXD?? I was thinking on running kvm and create a few VMs and run docker containers inside. So where LXC/LXD falls into? Would it be a way of running my VMs or my app containers?? Or neither?? thanks!
thanks..
I have experience using docker.... I'm planning to try a slim down kubernetes (k3s) to run some home services (homeassistant, db, grafana, prometheus, etc) Looks like I'll try Ubuntu Server to run KVM and spin up a few vms as K3s nodes. Maybe using rancher to manage kubernetes..
Fair enough if you want a virtual homelab
You could just buy more NUCs though :D
Money grows on trees right
jaja, right...
the plan is to run one k3s on raspberry pi and run zwave2mqtt there, but be able to manage everything from kubernetes.
I still haven't decided if it would be better to get a Pi, NUC or some used SFF PC for hass... If Pi had a sata connector, the decision would be rather easy i think
build a mini itx machine
Nah build a solid minipc not much bigger than a nuc with an asrock deskmini 300 for less than 500 bucks with the newest ryzen 5 3400g
500 bucks, cost me £198 or something to build this minibox for my NAS 🤣
Well for 198£ you difinitely don't get a cool and quite minipc with NVME SSD x2 powered, ryzen 3400g and 16GB 3000Mhz CL16 RAM with the size of 15,5x15,5cm
I can run my desktop PC as the server for a few decades for that money, lol
lol at least not in my country
hmm, haven't actually calculated... You're probably more right than I am 😄
Considering I would have to rais from 2000kwh to 2800kwh and idk how much we pay but around from 60 bucks to 75 or so per month
However the feeling to have a stand alone physical device being a server is unpayable
Sure but you probably got a garage to outsource your wife 😛
lol I tried some 15 year old maxtor 250GB drives in my qnap that I'm going to convert to a HA box
they showed 62c
then the nas shutdown
🤣
I'd prefer to have standalone system. Iirc the PC I have uses about 80W, so that would be 700kWh/y which is like 60€ a year I think
so a Pi would pretty much save it's own cost in a couple of years (assuming I keep the PC on for quite a few hours a day anyway), but not so much with NUC or something more expensive
deam - would say one..
IMO with a pi you limit yourself for future expansions. Just considering this.
think I might need pen and paper for this Underknowledge...
I honestly would have no idea to calculate the pi 4 at 24/7 ~70% vs a 65w TDP cpu 24/7 ~10% + the pi I/O is very limited, not comparable to a NVME SSD 1500/900MB/s
@orchid rose - I got one - and cant get it 🤣
one after each other? I had my guess on 2 Rodians
I think 1x1=1
I assumed all three had to be there. Instructions unclear!
Got stuck with penis 🤣 I think the unclear instuctions are a part of
the last I bite my head of Exactly how many false statements are there in the list shown
🤷
when I say 3 wrong statements its getting 2 false out of it
I don't think I'm sober enough for the second one. I don't get it after reading it multiple times
word
@orchid rose my desktop has been on for 12 years, and the blade enclosure too, sleep mode is not an option 😄
I even used 400kwh to heat the greenhouse the last two months 😂
My desktop is on 24/7 as well and I'm planning to change that in the near future hopefully. Got a external disk I connected to my router (poor man's NAS), a small kodi box for entertainment and now I just need to move Hass to some other system
WHY IS THIS A SETTING
So you can annoy your friends when you score in FIFA
Because it can be
@midnight adder for when that annoying friend with epilepsy comes over
for when kyle wins at mario kart again
23430473 bad blocks on my other old drive... holy (equals 227Mb as logfile )
Finally got this working again, useful to see if it will be long getting to the north of my city
depends if there has been a crash
So, 50/50 then 😛
more like 75/25 as sometimes it will just be busy
To be fair to it, it's no worse than any other main road in rush hour, and infinitely better than the M25
Too true
damn brain, y u heff to do this
porbably just missing a ;
Or just me writing conidtion instead of condition but I can't see it until five people point it out
New NFC/RFID smart locks for drawers and cabinets from IKEA! https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00429619/
theres a warning system
when you try to use it and battery is low it beeps incessantly for 30 minutes
like a smoke alarm i guess.
ya
if i ever go to ikea again i'll buy that
my ikiea wishlist is long. i wish they did shipping. i hate going in that store.
oh weird. i thought shipping was like $75
I wonder if i can just load up on a bunch of stuff and only spend $10
@flat lintel do you have any ikea home automation stuff?
what hub?
what stick
gotcha.
not bad for not wanting to goto the store
what would i use that lock for.... hmmmm
my car! hahah
0 matches for "SYMFONISK"
Sorry, your search did not produce any results.
😦
0 matches for "Fyrtur" Did you mean: tretur, mixtur, filter?
Sorry, your search did not produce any results.
Huh? 😂
Oh, they are not out yet. Oct 1 in US.
The price is pretty surprising to me: $129 to $179
Speaking of Ikea... I needed to create a bracket for the classic Ikea PS cabinet. Going to upload on Thingiverse but pretty happy with the results right now.
This allows you to put your shelves on different levels without them being so easy to fall. The original design expects both shelves to be placed on the same level so that they can use each other as blocks; my design simply puts the block on the brackets instead of relying on shelves being on the same level and holding/blocking each other from falling off. My end plan is to modify these brackets to hold dowels, so that I can use this cabinet partially as a filing cabinet. These aren't super sturdy but they seem to do the job. Will update with the Ikea modification goodness!
Holy damn, apparently I average 28kWh per day last month
I wonder what my options are to get measurements are for how much power I am using
something attached to the meter or something
Are you running a server farm 😮
Oh hey Robot, fancy seeing you here
Uhh no, just the one server
In fairness we didn't have curtains for part of June, but theres other things I can cut down on
I use around 40kw a day :p
fixed charge eh? as in your are always charged that or its a cap?
Charged that. So if you didnt use any power then you would have to pay the 1.65
ahhh okay
I got solar panels on Thursday so I can tell how much I am making but not how much I am using
I'd like to base automations around that equation, maybe
Made 7kWh hours today and its been a somewhat cloudy winters day so thats nice
@serene escarp nice!
Should be able to sort that out easily @ocean mirage
Yeah I just need to do some research
@ocean mirage we do 90kwh average per day here in summer, and 120kwh average in winter
Winter is -35 😛
But what about summer lol
Also I just assume your buildings are insulated better lol
Today we pay usd0.1 per kWh , it's been a lot lower in summer, winter is probably closer to 0.15 0.2
They are quite insulated, but it's hard to keep a whole house warm for months 😛
I pay about 0.16 USD and I think thats regardless of time or season
fair enough
still 90kWh in SUMMER? damn
The biggest power users are probably water heater (300l), oven (4pads and the oven itself)
And heat pump, to keep house cool in summer and warm in winter
Atleast the two first ones are gas in the US, so they don't count those on the electrical bill
Don't know what you do in oz
Gas is semi common but I dont use gas at all
Feed it with kangaroos? kKph
lol
Kilos of kangaroos per hour
I have no idea how many litres my water heater is, I'll check in a second since I am going to turn it down
PUT IT ON THE BARBIE!
We install the heater and never touch it for 25 years until we replace it 🤷
Thats quite a lifespan
Yeah, replaced the one in this house when I moved in, it was 25 exactly, put it out for free in the marketplace, a guy came driving 300km to pick it up the same day
The biggest fuse in a Norwegian house is the oven in the kitchen though
It is usually 25 or more amps
With the new induction tops they are usually 2x25 I believe
I can't say I know much about the power specs of our hardwired appliances tbh
I think my water heater is 10 years old though and I think thats considered old here
Could be related to getting it to mainly heat when you are producing power (solar) or when power is cheap (off peak)?
That is a good idea actually
Solar is not that widespread in Norway yet
The initial cost is to high for most as it would take 20-30 years to pay off
And most Norwegians move once every 10 years it seems to me😂
My GFs mum bought the system for us so its making me money immediately lol
😂
Shes is very greeny though so its not just a money equation for her anyway
although my city aims to be fully renewable soon anyway
But last I heard the average time it takes to pay for itself is 7 years, may have come down since then
our sun might be stronger though?
Got that ozone layer hole helping us out lol
Yeah, last 6 months have all been 55%+ electric vehicles sold of total cars I think
DOESN'T WORK IN THE OUTBACK MATE!
hah
Yeah the state pays all tax, so it's dead cheap
ah nice
Tesla would be 150k$ in reality, they pay 50k
But an EV isn't powered by dinosaurs like mine is so uh, check mate
Dinos rule man
When I play the Jurassic Park theme while redlining on that dino juice its just magical
Even then you can get a diesel power generator just for the car 👌
Hehe
Well for your point telco - Canberra has been aiming to be fully renewable powered by the end of next year
Not sure the likelihood
Norway said it wants to sell only electric vehicles by 2025
Then it's a good thing Norway is not a car dealership
But that is retarded since 40% of income to the state is from gas and taxes on cars
Reading up on smart thermostat and the theory behind. I don’t really get how it saves money, does this only work for people who run their heating/cooling while not at home?
Cause I just turn my shit off, 100% savings
That's my thinking as well.
@ocean mirage they're part of the "National" energy grid though aren't they
You can't be 100% renewable unless you don't import any fossil power
Yeah I’d have to assume, so I am guessing that it’s just trying to get a zero sum
Wait, that's illegal.jpg
Wouldn’t be the first time our government would do something illegal
I mean it's fine for them to increase renewable use, but I think it's a misleading term
Plus no one eveeerr talks about consumption
Legalised same sex marriage illegally before it was a federal thing lol
Oh for sure
If we had proper building codes, and regulated, we wouldn't need so much power
So much power used to heat or cool shit buildings
Yeah Canberra has so many un insulated houses
" rar my power bill is so high, i know let's demand cheaper power instead of just consuming less"
" my house is so awesome, it has 40mm stone bench tops and italian marble in the bathroom. No I can't afford air sealing or insulation. All this glazing lets it so much light it's so airy. Why is it so hot in the evening"
@ocean mirage yea which makes it even more stupid, because they pay less road tax and toll booths, even though they do more wear on the roads
Yeah that’s my thinking but if they are trying to support them it makes sense, if it doesn’t bankrupt them lol

My roses are coming along
