Those wire nuts are life changing. I will always spend the extra money to get those if I'm planning anything with electronics

They're called Wago lever-nuts if you wanted to find them

I like docker. It's elegant

strange vapor
#

Once you keep it simple, it's great! Main issue I've seen with it is old school devs who don't understand the simple part.

#

I honestly wish I was joking, but I came across a Docker image which during build just ran yumdownloader to pull down a whole heap of rpms and leave them there. Then on boot, it would us rpm with the rpmdb set to /dev/null to install them in a certain order, some of them overwriting the files of the others.

#

When asked a very very incredulous "Why?!" it turned out that there was something in the %post script that depended on a variable in a single file which was being supplied when the docker instane booted.

Wtf

orchid rose

well ntfs works fine, so I'd just go with that

formated one drive already this way - but I dont know much bout the filesystems

clear ferry

Fat32 unless you need big files

Works everywhere

NTFS is..
Meh for anything else than windows, but it "works" in most other os

orchid rose

4GB limit is pretty limiting nowadays though. NTFS is pretty well supported as well nowadays

clear ferry

SMB 4 lyfe

hearty depot
#

nay to fat32 - many videos I shoot having around 10 gig - 4k is stupid

clear ferry

Then do network sharing, or internet sharing

I use owncloud for sharing with family and friends

#

Locally everything I have communicates via SMB

#

I use owncloud for sharing with family and friends

hearty depot
#

I just clean up all my older drives - thanks to the new 8TiB WD - thats how I come to the idea formating the old drives

clear ferry
#

I find usb drives too unreliable, and the limitations of cross supported filesystems flaky at best

orchid rose
#

network drives can be very useful, but if you want internal drives and need windows, just use ntfs

hearty depot
#

(here i stand in the rain.. running all my cool stuff from an old macbook with only USB2.1)

orchid rose
#

I'm a bit worried about the external WD I bought. It runs much hotter than I'm used to with a properly cooled PC. I've had no disk issues even with a WD green that isn't supposed to be used like I use it. The constanly parking head (or something?) was many multiples over the specced number when I checked a year or two ago

hearty depot
#

deam - its realy a little warm (35° at least)

orchid rose
#

I don't know how to check the temperature of the external drive, but the internals have maxed at 32C

clear ferry
#

my 10tb ones are 48c right now

#

still copying 24\7 from old nas

#

let me check my 4TB ones in the qnap also

orchid rose
#

from my experience the temperature makes a massive difference to the life of these drives, but it's only based on a few disks so it could be just random variation

#

my WD green has 6 years of power on time now. 1.2 million load/unload cycles

clear ferry
#

so tests online show that they usually run 10-20 degrees above ambient temperature, and my garage is 25c atm, so 35-45 is normal it seems

orchid rose
#

that's what I was afraid of... That seems rather high

clear ferry
#

4tb drives are running at 36c

orchid rose
#

in comparison to the WD with 1.2 million load/unload, my 8½ year-old Samsung drive has 5889 cycles...

hearty depot
#

cool - not even remotly finished - but already having 16 bad sectors on this old drive

orchid rose
#

that drive probably won't survive much longer then 😛

hearty depot
#

🙈 eeh - what used to be my best drive

#

like... 10 15 years ago

orchid rose
#

how large is it even if it's that old?

hearty depot
#

1.3 TB - I dont know for shure - but feels like it

#

that thing was huuuuuge back then

#

must have been around 2007 - befor I got my first APPLE nas 🤣
aaahhh... I hope that thing ll nurn in hardware hell

clear ferry
#

I remember my 20MB drive 🤣

#

But I'm not very worried about the temperatures here either, one drive has failed for me in this house, and the temps are the same every year 🤷

#

my storage has always been in my garage

orchid rose
#

my fear is only based on a feeling, not really statistics or anything scientific

#

interesting graph. Couldn't find a more recent one unfortunately

clear ferry
#

last time I had a HDD failure I sent WD the serial number and a smart report

#

got a new in the mail, didn't have to return the old one

orchid rose
#

that's pretty cool. How long are the guarantees for these? 1 or 2 years?

clear ferry
#

from a google study

#

The figure shows that failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend.

#

2 years for all drives I have owned

hearty depot
#

*fastly gooleing how to pull smart reports

strange vapor
#

@hearty depot Take the HD out, open it up, and there's a tiny little thermal printer next to the SATA port which prints it out...

orchid rose
#

That study is pretty old. Not sure why that would change anything though

clear ferry
#

It won't

hearty depot
#

instructions unclear.. stuck in HDD with penis

clear ferry
#

I've seen the same thing at work, huge SANs with 400+ drives, if the cooling stops I hardly see failures go up

#

but if the drives are too close to the floor, those drives will fail more

#

there were even some firmwares that caused drives under 20c to go into write through mode

#

and disable cache

#

so I strongly advise my customers against having perforated floors in front of SANs

#

reminds me about the screaming at the SAN video, let's see if I can find it

hearty depot
#

Reminds me of the datacenter that lost a ton of data due to the CO fire extinguishers

orchid rose
#

haha, that's pretty cool

clear ferry
#

@hearty depot had a DC with 5 SANS get all the inergen gas released at once, the DOORS buckled outwards

#

there was an increase in latency for a few seconds

#

but no increase in disk failures

In previous gig, we had had a whole slew of alerts one day that a lot of kit in the DC was shutting down due to getting too hot. We had had no notification from the DC that anything was wrong.

#

I got sent up in the Van while my manager tried to get through to anyone in the DC.

#

Turns out the mains water had burst the previous day. While the cooling system is self contained, it required constant top ups from mains to keep running.

#

I pulled into the yard to see a human chain passing in the bottles of water you see in Water Coolers being passed in!

clear ferry
#

LOL

strange vapor
#

Amazingly, we lost no kit or HDs, but a few racks over from us (shared floor) there was SANs in a not very happy place.

clear ferry
#

Kinda reminded me about when I was doing some switch config in my old job, suddenly got disconnected and though, heck what now ? then it came back, and that happened 2-3 times, I suspected bad power, went onsite, saw the door.. leaking, the room was pretty self contained and the water had penetrated a crack in the side, and filled up,and flooded out when I opened the door, the water was just bouncing up barely reaching the switch I recon 🤣

#

I got no p90s and need a good acoustic

#

hmmm

#

I've never got the big urge for a high number of guitars though, maybe cause I know I'd just pick my Tele up first anyway

strange vapor
ocean mirage
#

Haha someones finally tried this sort of thing again

#

way back when Tony Iommi was involved in some fast swap pickup guitar company

#

17 pickup selector positions lol no thanks

#

not that I would benefit from fast pickup swapping anyway, im fine with the slow way

#

interesting though

strange vapor
#

Also every expensive.

ocean mirage
#

oh yeah lol

#

I didn't even check that

#

Do you play then ?

clear ferry
#

I need a 7 string, I don't have one ThonkEyes

#

And a barritone

#

And a dobro

ocean mirage
#

I don't think I would really have a use for a 7 string, nor be any good at it lol

#

barritones are cool for sure, but again I'd probably not use it as much

#

dobros are cool :)

strange vapor
#

@ocean mirage I was given a 5-string Warwick Rockbass by a friend to try out. Turns out that low B is extremely damn handy 😄

clear ferry
#

Only 7 string I've enjoyed is a Ibanez s series, so I might buy one when i go to Japan 😂

#

@strange vapor I've drooled for a Yamaha TRB6p for... 20 years

ocean mirage
#

@strange vapor I had a 5 string bass but it wasn't a good one, seems squier 5 strings have really flabby Bs even if its thicc

#

I never used the B anyway, not for what I was playing, since I for the most part just have fun with covers

#

My brother has a 7 string guitar, but he plays metal and whatnot so it makes more sense for him

strange vapor
#

@ocean mirage This is a cheap ass Warwick, but it was setup by custom shop who know what they're doing (Dolmen Guitars). Really nice to play.

ocean mirage
#

Warwick are supposed to be nice, I assume that includes the cheap ones

clear ferry
#

The Great 7 string sound of Nevermore is what I long for on a 7 string

ocean mirage
#

I can setup things fine but the guitar has to be constructed fine too lol

#

something to do with what happens after the nut, length and angle to the tuning peg I guess

#

If I got a extended guitar I'd be more interested in clean playing with base lines and stuff on top that riffing, but I would suck at doing that

strange vapor
#

I bought a cheap ass guitar via Kickstarter two years ago just as a platform to learn how to setup a guitar. Turned out to be a great thing, once I upgraded the hardware!

ocean mirage
#

Yeah cool :) its a fun thing

#

I put together a strat from used parts, that was nice. Ended up liking it more than my American Deluxe Strat so I sold it lol

strange vapor
ocean mirage
#

Yeah cool :) doing setups is fun, and nice once you get it where you like

#

I also like the electronics part

clear ferry
#

I built a telecaster from rando parts va few years ago

tawny pebble
#

Guess I'll ask again (: Anybody here who's using a smart power strip? Smart power extension.. I'm looking something that does integrate well with HA and has power meter

strange vapor
#

@tawny pebble I'm using a APC 1U Powerstrip thing. Just using snmp sensor to monitor it.

#

Probably a bit industrial for what you're talking about 😃

tawny pebble
#

@strange vapor yes, way too Pro 😂

amber bramble
#

tp-link has a kasa power strip

#

i think it works with the HA tp-link integration

#

not sure if it has power metering though

tawny pebble
#

@amber bramble yup i saw it but can't seem to find the DE outlets. and anyway, was hoping to find someone who is using it so to have direct feedback.

Interesting thing I found is this:
https://github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/ZEOOTA-Wifi-Smart-Power-Strip-4-EU-outlets-with-4-USB-ports
I have never flashed tasmota, before buying something i can only use in half (like done already :/ ) it would be a great idea to ask around and see

clear ferry
#

I can help you flash tasmota if you need help, I've done a few plugs 😛

Hi all, well a bit off topic but I would like to share a complete guide of my ci/cd setup with gitea and drone. Should I post in the forum? If yes, where to post?

midnight adder
#

Hello there, by mistake i press STOP instead of restart.I have the ssh close.Any way to start home assistant?

clear ferry
#

@midnight adder restart the machine

#

You know your smart house is growing when you are starting to consider moving your /24 net to a /23 net ThonkEyes

serene escarp
#

lmao @clear ferry are you having any issues? you must have over 100 IoT devices lol

clear ferry
#

I have a lot of stuff in general, just 50 vms in my lab, a bunch of network switches in a network lab, and now iot on top of that 😂

serene escarp
#

also just heard a report from coca cola today attempting to prepare grocery stores for their death in 2025 since supposedly everything will have a sensor... time to move to /16? lol

clear ferry
#

I have more than a 100 devices for sure in iot, but not only wifi

serene escarp
#

lol well of course I thought you might have a lot of networking equipment as well 😉

clear ferry
#

I work with some smart store projects, they do weighted shelves to track items being picked up and put down, and the carts have device trackers in them to see shopping patterns

serene escarp
#

also, my god that's a lot of vms. containers? lol

clear ferry
#

This has been going on for years

serene escarp
#

interesting

#

That's super interesting

clear ferry
#

No containers here, I'm a VM guy 😛

serene escarp
#

lol

#

I feel it

clear ferry
#

Or I lie, I have 3 containers also

serene escarp
#

haha I am currently working on a fourth container for a small app I'm doing

#

If I had the computing resources, yes, 50 vms

#

but I'm struggling to get my nas up atm

clear ferry
#

Deployed 6x3TB memory systems to a grocery store two years ago for sap Hana analytics, so it's definitely nothing new though 😛

serene escarp
#

yeah, the analytics has been there for awhile. What about the IoT for consumers though?

#

The convenience factor and potential automation of reordering perishables/consumables will probably make it much more difficult for grocery stores

#

kinda like amazon warehouses taking over old mall lots lol

clear ferry
#

Yeah, video is hard, so pressure sensors and monitoring their own stuff is the way to go

#

Then correlate the data

serene escarp
#

interesting

#

yeah

#

how about amazon go though? they use video. Probably just supplemental though

#

I think they use all those sensors as well

clear ferry
#

The us is different, Norway has strict surveillance laws

serene escarp
#

that's probably a good thing

#

haha

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I'm not allowed to catch any public road or my neighbors houses on my surveillance cams

serene escarp
#

huh, man I don't know I should probably check the laws here

#

out of curiosity what do you use home assistant for?

#

and do things break a lot?

#

and more importantly, if they do, are you okay with it?

clear ferry
#

Everything, often, because I'm a tool, so I blame myself ThonkEyes

serene escarp
#

lol!

#

good reasoning ☝

#

anything you love that you find yourself coming back to with automation?

clear ferry
#

I try to automate most things, but still have to keep some things manual because of the baby

#

when even the wife goes hey, that would be nice you know you are doing something right

serene escarp
#

haha yup!

#

interesting, I bet that you're learning a lot more about user experience and your home that way!

clear ferry
#

yeah, home automation started with me wanting to make a smart lamp for the nursery, then it spun out of control 🤣

#

now I am building a custom fully integrated greenhouse in HA, most of the lights in the house are smart and more and more of the daily routines are being automated and monitored

serene escarp
#

That's great

#

I've noticed similar effects after being bitten by the smart home bug

clear ferry
#

Thank goodness I have the economy to sustain it, or else it might be like a debt inducing gambling addiction

serene escarp
#

It's like once you have these things you realize how much easier you can make your life it you created an automation

#

haha

#

good point!

#

hoping that when I'm working it'll be like that too

#

for now, I'm going into grad school

#

so probably going to be broke anyways 😄

clear ferry
#

I'm nowhere as good as Tinkerer, Vasiley or the others, but I try aThonkParty

serene escarp
#

(after grad school)

#

haha

clear ferry
#

I did vocational training, started engineering, but dropped out after a year, I'm not good with school 🤣

serene escarp
#

tbh I pay attention but I haven't gotten on the dev train yet.

#

I feel it

#

school can be pretty boring

#

I wasn't going to do a masters until I learned about the possibility of hanging out in a big makerspace 😃

#

actually through this experience I feel like I can really get into IoT and develop some useful things

#

Hoping that they'll be useful for more than just +1

clear ferry
#

my wife is doing her masters in cyber\security\threat now

serene escarp
#

that was my other thing I would be interested in. But I'm leaning on IoT because I love interacting with physical things or using data to do so.

#

honestly, props to your wife 😃

#

gotta be hard to learn about how easy it is to break into pretty much everything.

clear ferry
#

yeah, you are going to get some kind of job with an IOT education 🤣

serene escarp
#

lol

clear ferry
#

she delivered her bachelor while 7 months pregnant

serene escarp
#

well, maybe it'll just be a hobby

clear ferry
#

and got an A+

#

🤣

serene escarp
#

haha that's epic!

#

your wife sounds like an amazing person

#

and congrats on your child 😄

#

Not sure if there are a lot of consumer IoT jobs at the moment, but I have background in networking and programming, so feeling like I can get a job at least to tide over the expense until I really know what I want

clear ferry
#

thanks!

serene escarp
#

I mean, maybe I could work for home assistant 🤔

#

lmao

clear ferry
#

I actually discussed with an electrician friend

#

he said.. there was only one guy doing IOT

#

and I went like

#

wtf

#

so the consumer market hasn't started blooming yet

#

so getting in NOW or sometime soon is probably smart

#

because that shit is going to blow up

ocean mirage
#

Tertiary education would be cool in a way but I never went

serene escarp
#

trust me, I wasn't going to go

#

Until I saw some cool stuff.

#

then I was like please let me enjoy this without having financial issues lol

clear ferry
#

I concidered doing some education now, but, I have quite a bit of training, I am the only guy doing a lot of products in the whole country and I have 15 years experience, I don't know what more an education could give me 🤷

ocean mirage
#

Yeah thats fair

serene escarp
#

but yeah, here's to IoT being something that's in everyone's lexicon 🍻

#

depends on where you're going. Program I'm in has at least one software dev w/14yrs experience

ocean mirage
#

I could definitely learn more and make it easier to get work elsewhere in the same field

#

If I won the lottery I'd probably study music though :)

serene escarp
#

nice 😄

clear ferry
#

yeah, I have 5 open job offers right now and I have atleast $15.000 more than most of my collegues, don't think struggeling with math for 3 years would be worth it for me, would probably only make me more angry 🤣

serene escarp
#

tbh getting to that point you probably don't need education

#

but for my junior level I'm interested in learning more about the business side and design side of creating a product

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage you could be like me, tonedeaf and rythmblind

serene escarp
#

And learning some sweet new tech too, of course!

#

math has been something I've had a tough time applying in my day to day

#

so yeah, not worth it for me either 😛

#

what kinda music @ocean mirage ?

clear ferry
#

for some reason I excelled in chemistry and physics in my first year of engineering training, but flunked math

#

probably because the first ones are interesting 🤷

serene escarp
#

that's intruiging

#

hahaha

#

yeah!

#

I actually love math, fav subject

#

Just had a hard time actually using it outside of class lol

#

and now that I haven't studied it for a year, I've forgotten mostly everything

#

I struggle to do multiplication nowadays

#

pretty much rely on computers for everything

clear ferry
#

I just go ok google and what is 64 times 128

serene escarp
#

lol yes!

#

I make an estimate first

clear ferry
#

😲

serene escarp
#

And see how wrong I am from Google 😛

#

sometime's tech is funny though

#

I got an Amazon Echo Auto for my car recently

#

And...

#

When I gave it directions to a destination, it told me the right numbers

#

But then when Google Maps got it, it was the wrong numbers

clear ferry
#

I would like to get a newer iot car, my collegue uses HA to start the webasto in the winter when he unplugs his phone in the morning 🤣

serene escarp
#

And it turned out that the location was on the other side, in the freeway, so I was navigated twice to this spot on the freeway....

clear ferry
#

LOL

serene escarp
#

that's pretty epic

#

I have a 2011 car

#

dinosaur

clear ferry
#

yeah, I have a 2000 right now

#

because I do 30-40.000km per year, so I need something cheap to maintain 🤣

#

which my old 2000 Audi A8L was not, so now I drive a Golf MK4

serene escarp
#

easy to maintain is def a plus

clear ferry
#

bought the wife a 2014 model last year for the baby though

serene escarp
#

Like software, like vehicle

#

good good

#

minivan?

clear ferry
#

nah, small SUV, VW TIguan

#

I wanted a Touareg, but she wanted to drive it too 🤣

serene escarp
#

hmm, are you in Germany?

clear ferry
#

Minivans are not a big thing in europe though

#

Norway here

serene escarp
#

oh yeah whoops

#

gotcha

clear ferry
#

but I had a Chrysler Town And Country the last time I was in the US, nice car

serene escarp
#

Interesting

#

I think the most popular cars here are Toyota & Honda

#

Sounds fancy to drive in one though

clear ferry
#

almost 50% of all cars sold in Norway right now are electric

#

but that is because the state is subsidising them

serene escarp
#

man, we gotta get on that here

clear ferry
#

most popular brands are VW\Toyota\Nissan

serene escarp
#

that's pretty rad

clear ferry
#

all three because they deliver electric cars

serene escarp
#

and big manufacturers don't really have electric yet, right?

#

I mean

#

They are experimenting?

clear ferry
#

like, a tesla full price would be $150.000 here, but you can get it for $50.000 because of state subsidising

#

people don't give a shit about the enviroment, just saving money though ;)

serene escarp
#

that's pretty crazy

#

hahaha

#

right right

#

well it's a step in the right direction, at least

clear ferry
#

they were supposed to stop subsidising after 50.000 cars or something, that is way past now, and they are deliberating how to end it

serene escarp
#

lol

clear ferry
#

because the electric cars have had free parking and free tollboths too

serene escarp
#

woah

#

that sounds wild

#

to be in norway right now

#

I mean it's not a huuuge thing but it kinda is pretty great

#

a decent savings for everyone

#

But there's gotta be a cost...?

clear ferry
#

that is what happens when you have people who only care about the enviroment and not how to properly fund a country in the drivers-seat

serene escarp
#

YEah

clear ferry
#

so we are losing tons of money every year

serene escarp
#

We have that here, in Seattle, to

#

o

#

except I think the problems are a bit... worse

#

We just don't want cars... at all

#

instead the city is pushing for biking everywhere

#

but it rains quite a bit here

#

so... yeah. Every year there's another extra payment/obstacle for vehicles

#

most recently it's been removing lanes from cars and giving them exclusively to bikers. And then there's the 150% increase in vehicle licensing fees

clear ferry
#

the state told everyone to buy diesel in the late 00's

#

then now diesel cars are taxed higher since '15

#

🤷

serene escarp
#

oof

#

but... electric cars are hyped at least

#

sad for all those old cars

#

diesel used to be the cheapest

#

now it's more expensive.

clear ferry
#

the thing with electric in norway...

#

it works... for some

#

the country is long

serene escarp
#

yeah...

clear ferry
#

it's cold

serene escarp
#

ouch

clear ferry
#

so a electric car that does 150km in summer, will do less than 100 in winter

light trout
#

Battery+cold == not the best idea

clear ferry
#

and I have 120km to and from the office

serene escarp
#

wow

light trout
#

Move

serene escarp
#

That's insanely bad

#

also t hat's a long commute

clear ferry
#

well, if I accept the job offer I have at hand now I will have 4000km to the office @light trout but I will only have to go once a month 🤣

serene escarp
#

hope you get to work remotely sometimes

#

haha

#

geez

light trout
#

Worth it!

serene escarp
#

where you working

#

the moon?

clear ferry
#

I might accept an offer in Houston 🤣

serene escarp
#

lol

#

you must be pretty specialized

#

or just the best, as you said before haha

clear ferry
#

My wife says... I'm special

#

atleast

serene escarp
#

lol

light trout
#

He is special

serene escarp
#

lol

#

that's cool you have those opportunities

clear ferry
#

yeah, we'll see, I need to look into the finer details first, like salery and hours and more

serene escarp
#

yup yup

#

relocating is kind of a big ask

#

unless you get the remote thing

clear ferry
#

well, the thing is, I won't relocate, just do 1 week every month in houston, then the other three weeks wherever I want in Norway

serene escarp
#

still a decent amount of stress I'd think to do everything

#

But my mom was a flight attendant for 45 years

ocean mirage
#

Soz went afk. Not sure what categorisation music degrees have

serene escarp
#

haha classical is one I'd think.

clear ferry
#

flight attendant must be so cool though

serene escarp
#

I think so

#

pilot is kinda way cooler

#

my dad's one

clear ferry
#

had a friend who worked with automation on oilrigs, he had diamond in every airline you can think of

serene escarp
#

woaaah

#

that's rad

clear ferry
#

my father wanted me to become a pilot 🤣

serene escarp
#

it's... an incredible amount of work

clear ferry
#

aye, probably fun though

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I imagine that classical and jazz are the two big ones, jazz being closer to what I like

clear ferry
#

jazz is for.. strange people

ocean mirage
#

But soul and blues is more my thing

#

Hah

serene escarp
#

true that

#

cool stuff

clear ferry
#

I knew a guy who could identify any chord \ note \ beat, kinda music autist

ocean mirage
#

My little brother loves jazz, he’s primarily a trumpeter

clear ferry
#

but he couldn't play jazz

#

it was... too freeformed he said

ocean mirage
#

It’s fairly straightforward for the most part

serene escarp
#

I'm sort of out guys. going to code a thing but I'll be seeing what's up from time to time 😄

#

have fun with the music and keep with it @ocean mirage !

clear ferry
#

Closest to Jazz I listen to is probaby David Sylvian - Secrets Of The Beehive I think it is categorized as Avantgard Jazz

ocean mirage
#

Basic improv ain’t hard

serene escarp
#

Nice talking with you too

clear ferry
#

byeeeee @serene escarp

ocean mirage
#

You too, cya

serene escarp
#

good luck with everything I'll talk to you guys next time 😄

clear ferry

oof, all 10TB of storage moved from the qnap to the freenas

#

What, you didn't rsync them over 😛

Now just waiting for that Dell server from the us 😛

So I can pool all my drives in a single box

Mind you, now that ZWave2MQTT supports MQTT Discovery, I can finally plan a migration off my Pi3 to my old (i7) laptop

@clever mortar have you ever worked with state systems..... 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

#

hi! I'm trying to build my first homelab ever and migrate my rPi homeassitant to it.... I just got an Intel NUC. I'm trying to decide what hypervisor to use. But now I think I don't understand a few concepts.. What is LXC/LXD?? I was thinking on running kvm and create a few VMs and run docker containers inside. So where LXC/LXD falls into? Would it be a way of running my VMs or my app containers?? Or neither?? thanks!

hushed basalt
#

Would you consider bare metal

#

I don't run VMs myself

heady ore
#

thanks..

#

I have experience using docker.... I'm planning to try a slim down kubernetes (k3s) to run some home services (homeassistant, db, grafana, prometheus, etc) Looks like I'll try Ubuntu Server to run KVM and spin up a few vms as K3s nodes. Maybe using rancher to manage kubernetes..

hushed basalt
#

Fair enough if you want a virtual homelab

#

You could just buy more NUCs though :D

#

Money grows on trees right

heady ore
#

jaja, right...

#

the plan is to run one k3s on raspberry pi and run zwave2mqtt there, but be able to manage everything from kubernetes.

orchid rose
#

I still haven't decided if it would be better to get a Pi, NUC or some used SFF PC for hass... If Pi had a sata connector, the decision would be rather easy i think

clear ferry
#

build a mini itx machine

boreal pewter
#

Nah build a solid minipc not much bigger than a nuc with an asrock deskmini 300 for less than 500 bucks with the newest ryzen 5 3400g

clear ferry
#

500 bucks, cost me £198 or something to build this minibox for my NAS 🤣

boreal pewter
#

Well for 198£ you difinitely don't get a cool and quite minipc with NVME SSD x2 powered, ryzen 3400g and 16GB 3000Mhz CL16 RAM with the size of 15,5x15,5cm

orchid rose
#

I can run my desktop PC as the server for a few decades for that money, lol

boreal pewter
#

lol at least not in my country

orchid rose
#

hmm, haven't actually calculated... You're probably more right than I am 😄

boreal pewter
#

Considering I would have to rais from 2000kwh to 2800kwh and idk how much we pay but around from 60 bucks to 75 or so per month

#

However the feeling to have a stand alone physical device being a server is unpayable

clear ferry
#

you should see my 42U rack

#

the power usage would cripple your power bill 🤣

boreal pewter
#

Sure but you probably got a garage to outsource your wife 😛

clear ferry
#

lol I tried some 15 year old maxtor 250GB drives in my qnap that I'm going to convert to a HA box

#

they showed 62c

#

then the nas shutdown

#

🤣

orchid rose
#

I'd prefer to have standalone system. Iirc the PC I have uses about 80W, so that would be 700kWh/y which is like 60€ a year I think

#

so a Pi would pretty much save it's own cost in a couple of years (assuming I keep the PC on for quite a few hours a day anyway), but not so much with NUC or something more expensive

hearty depot
boreal pewter
#

IMO with a pi you limit yourself for future expansions. Just considering this.

orchid rose
#

think I might need pen and paper for this Underknowledge...

boreal pewter
#

I honestly would have no idea to calculate the pi 4 at 24/7 ~70% vs a 65w TDP cpu 24/7 ~10% + the pi I/O is very limited, not comparable to a NVME SSD 1500/900MB/s

My desktop is on 24/7 as well and I'm planning to change that in the near future hopefully. Got a external disk I connected to my router (poor man's NAS), a small kodi box for entertainment and now I just need to move Hass to some other system

#

Speaking of Ikea... I needed to create a bracket for the classic Ikea PS cabinet. Going to upload on Thingiverse but pretty happy with the results right now.
This allows you to put your shelves on different levels without them being so easy to fall. The original design expects both shelves to be placed on the same level so that they can use each other as blocks; my design simply puts the block on the brackets instead of relying on shelves being on the same level and holding/blocking each other from falling off. My end plan is to modify these brackets to hold dowels, so that I can use this cabinet partially as a filing cabinet. These aren't super sturdy but they seem to do the job. Will update with the Ikea modification goodness!

ocean mirage
#

Holy damn, apparently I average 28kWh per day last month

#

I wonder what my options are to get measurements are for how much power I am using

#

something attached to the meter or something

quartz ether
#

Are you running a server farm 😮

ocean mirage
#

Oh hey Robot, fancy seeing you here

#

Uhh no, just the one server

#

In fairness we didn't have curtains for part of June, but theres other things I can cut down on

quartz ether
#

I use around 40kw a day :p

ocean mirage
#

hehe yeah but you have a good reason for that

#

How much do you pay per kWh?

quartz ether
#

21.69c per unit

#

with a fixed charge of $1.65 per day

ocean mirage
#

fixed charge eh? as in your are always charged that or its a cap?

quartz ether
#

Charged that. So if you didnt use any power then you would have to pay the 1.65

ocean mirage
#

ahhh okay

#

I got solar panels on Thursday so I can tell how much I am making but not how much I am using

#

I'd like to base automations around that equation, maybe

#

Made 7kWh hours today and its been a somewhat cloudy winters day so thats nice

clear ferry
#

@serene escarp nice!

quartz ether
#

Should be able to sort that out easily @ocean mirage

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I just need to do some research

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage we do 90kwh average per day here in summer, and 120kwh average in winter

ocean mirage
#

hooooly what

#

How on earth

clear ferry
#

Winter is -35 😛

ocean mirage
#

But what about summer lol

#

Also I just assume your buildings are insulated better lol

clear ferry
#

Today we pay usd0.1 per kWh , it's been a lot lower in summer, winter is probably closer to 0.15 0.2

#

They are quite insulated, but it's hard to keep a whole house warm for months 😛

ocean mirage
#

I pay about 0.16 USD and I think thats regardless of time or season

#

fair enough

#

still 90kWh in SUMMER? damn

clear ferry
#

The biggest power users are probably water heater (300l), oven (4pads and the oven itself)

#

And heat pump, to keep house cool in summer and warm in winter

#

Atleast the two first ones are gas in the US, so they don't count those on the electrical bill

#

Don't know what you do in oz

ocean mirage
#

Gas is semi common but I dont use gas at all

clear ferry
#

Feed it with kangaroos? kKph

ocean mirage
#

lol

clear ferry
#

Kilos of kangaroos per hour

ocean mirage
#

I have no idea how many litres my water heater is, I'll check in a second since I am going to turn it down

clear ferry
#

PUT IT ON THE BARBIE!

ocean mirage
#

its way hotter than needed

#

lol

clear ferry
#

We install the heater and never touch it for 25 years until we replace it 🤷

ocean mirage
#

Thats quite a lifespan

clear ferry
#

Yeah, replaced the one in this house when I moved in, it was 25 exactly, put it out for free in the marketplace, a guy came driving 300km to pick it up the same day

#

The biggest fuse in a Norwegian house is the oven in the kitchen though

#

It is usually 25 or more amps

#

With the new induction tops they are usually 2x25 I believe

ocean mirage
#

I can't say I know much about the power specs of our hardwired appliances tbh

#

I think my water heater is 10 years old though and I think thats considered old here

clear ferry
#

I have seen there are some water heater components in ha

#

That is weird to me 😛

ocean mirage
#

Could be related to getting it to mainly heat when you are producing power (solar) or when power is cheap (off peak)?

clear ferry
#

That is a good idea actually

#

Solar is not that widespread in Norway yet

#

The initial cost is to high for most as it would take 20-30 years to pay off

#

And most Norwegians move once every 10 years it seems to me😂

ocean mirage
#

My GFs mum bought the system for us so its making me money immediately lol

clear ferry
#

😂

ocean mirage
#

Shes is very greeny though so its not just a money equation for her anyway

#

although my city aims to be fully renewable soon anyway

#

But last I heard the average time it takes to pay for itself is 7 years, may have come down since then

#

our sun might be stronger though?

#

Got that ozone layer hole helping us out lol

clear ferry
#

Yeah, last 6 months have all been 55%+ electric vehicles sold of total cars I think

ocean mirage
#

Oh damn

#

is there any incentive in EVs, like less tax or something?

clear ferry
#

DOESN'T WORK IN THE OUTBACK MATE!

ocean mirage
#

hah

clear ferry
#

Yeah the state pays all tax, so it's dead cheap

ocean mirage
#

ah nice

clear ferry
#

Tesla would be 150k$ in reality, they pay 50k

ocean mirage
#

But an EV isn't powered by dinosaurs like mine is so uh, check mate

clear ferry
#

Dinos rule man

ocean mirage
#

When I play the Jurassic Park theme while redlining on that dino juice its just magical

hushed basalt
#

You can power an EV with dino corpses

#

Unless you're on off grid solar

light trout
#

Even then you can get a diesel power generator just for the car 👌

ocean mirage
#

Hehe

#

Well for your point telco - Canberra has been aiming to be fully renewable powered by the end of next year

#

Not sure the likelihood

clear ferry
#

Norway said it wants to sell only electric vehicles by 2025

light trout
#

Then it's a good thing Norway is not a car dealership

clear ferry
#

But that is retarded since 40% of income to the state is from gas and taxes on cars

ocean mirage
#

EVs are generally pretty heavy right?

#

Them batteries

ocean mirage
#

Reading up on smart thermostat and the theory behind. I don’t really get how it saves money, does this only work for people who run their heating/cooling while not at home?

#

Cause I just turn my shit off, 100% savings

subtle sandal
#

That's my thinking as well.

hushed basalt
#

@ocean mirage they're part of the "National" energy grid though aren't they

#

You can't be 100% renewable unless you don't import any fossil power

ocean mirage
#

Yeah I’d have to assume, so I am guessing that it’s just trying to get a zero sum

hushed basalt
#

Wait, that's illegal.jpg

ocean mirage
#

Wouldn’t be the first time our government would do something illegal

hushed basalt
#

I mean it's fine for them to increase renewable use, but I think it's a misleading term

#

Plus no one eveeerr talks about consumption

ocean mirage
#

Legalised same sex marriage illegally before it was a federal thing lol

#

Oh for sure

hushed basalt
#

If we had proper building codes, and regulated, we wouldn't need so much power

#

So much power used to heat or cool shit buildings

ocean mirage
#

Yeah Canberra has so many un insulated houses

hushed basalt
#

" rar my power bill is so high, i know let's demand cheaper power instead of just consuming less"

#

" my house is so awesome, it has 40mm stone bench tops and italian marble in the bathroom. No I can't afford air sealing or insulation. All this glazing lets it so much light it's so airy. Why is it so hot in the evening"

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage yea which makes it even more stupid, because they pay less road tax and toll booths, even though they do more wear on the roads

ocean mirage
#

Yeah that’s my thinking but if they are trying to support them it makes sense, if it doesn’t bankrupt them lol
