Looking at buying a block of land

#

Which will have a house on it

#

And then I'll finally be able to have a home to automate :D

#

None of this rental approved edison to b22 adapter smart bulbs and devices on shelves

#

Any Aussie homeowners out there?

ocean mirage
#

Yeah but I probably don't know whatever you are gonna ask

#

also grats on being able to buy

clear ferry
#

Rental, meh, for noobs 😛

ocean mirage
#

Atx bought his house before he started shaving

clear ferry
#

Actually I did

#

I didn't get beard growth before I was 30 😂

ocean mirage
#

At all?

clear ferry
#

Well, enough to bother shaving, I had 1mm growth per year at most

ocean mirage
#

That’s interesting

#

Ruined my joke lol

clear ferry
#

Yes, I ruin mostly anything

#

Or so my wife says

ocean mirage
#

Works well, I’m not normally a fan of that type of lighting

dull chasm
#

i would so do that if i had stairs

clear ferry
#

Wait, you don't have stairs?

#

One floor house?

dull chasm
#

yes

clever mortar
#

North America has loads of space, so they don't feel the need to cram houses into as little footprint as possible 😄

clear ferry
#

All the American houses I see on TV have two floors with stairs that look like they belong on the Titanic and an entry way the size of my house 😛

dull chasm
#

TV Lies then

clever mortar
#

It's the various renovation shows that really show you what your average person lives in

clear ferry
#

Or hoarders? 😂

ocean mirage
#

Are single story houses unusual there atx?

clever mortar
#

Certainly in the UK they are

clear ferry
#

In Norway it would be weird

ocean mirage
#

Interesting

#

In Australia they’re more common by far

clear ferry
#

Most houses are atleast 2 floors, sometimes 4

ocean mirage
#

4 damn screw that

clear ferry
#

Mine is three 🤷

ocean mirage
#

I get the benefits but I’m not a big fan of stairs

clever mortar
#

Two is normal in the UK, but town houses with (sort of) three floors aren't uncommon

#

They've got a garage in the ground floor, sometimes a room down there, and then the "normal" arrangement above

ocean mirage
#

We have some like that nowadays but it’s not common

#

Maybe more in the big cities

clear ferry
#

Typical modern Norwegian house

clever mortar
#

Damn, that's a good size

somber steppe
#

But houses in states are made of paper

clever mortar
#

Modern houses most places aren't made out of brick/block any more 🤷

spiral latch
somber steppe
#

Then a hurracaine comes and it just blow up

clever mortar
#

Ooooh, magic smoke time!

somber steppe
#

Tinkerer in Argentina the houses are made of bricks

#

Never paper

spiral latch
#

sonoffs don't need cases do they lol

clever mortar
#

They used to be here in the UK, but now it's a mix of blockwork and "modern" construction

spiral latch
#

most UK are brick skinned

ocean mirage
#

Brick is super common here

#

Even on new houses

clear ferry
#

Brick houses are usually designer houses in Norway

ocean mirage
#

They just love to put some ugly render over it nowadays

clear ferry
#

I would love to buy a Tirol style house though, I love those

clever mortar
#

I'd love something with turrets, no matter how impractical that would be 😄

somber steppe
#

The good thing with usa paper houses is that the WiFi gets everyplace

#

The bad thing is the nature

spiral latch
#

I don't understand houses with "crawl spaces"

clever mortar
#

It's where you hide the bodies

spiral latch
#

just seems nasty

clear ferry
#

I use them to hide stuff that is too sentimental to throw away, but I don't have room to store in reality 🤷

light trout
#

yeah, stuff like @clever mortar said

somber steppe
#

As I understand it, crawl spaces are best in relatively dry climates. Britain is most definitely not one of those. Also, the frost line doesn't go deep in the UK, so a concrete base doesn't need to be built deep to avoid movement from frost.

clear ferry
#

I also have network switches in my crawl spaces

#

Even if it is -30 outside it's only around 0 there

clever mortar
#

Depends on which part of the UK @somber steppe - we start at merely damp and go through to swimming 🤣

clear ferry
#

@ocean mirage thought Oz people lived in the bush anyway, and bushfire was just a euphemism

wintry crow
#

Guys anyone set up a CUPS server on raspbian? Got a wee project at work and wanna test it

clever mortar
#

A long time back, yes

#

It was no different to setting it up on anything else

wintry crow
#

Install CUPS and samba, and just config via web page?

clever mortar
#

I think so, it's been some time

wintry crow
#

Lol k, cheers. I'll get a couple ordered for testing

clever mortar
#

Looking at their release dates, I was first using it before version 1.0...

#

It wasn't hard to set up back then, I doubt it got harder

#

Samba was the hardest part, the CUPS bit was easy, other than getting support for random printer #42 installed

wintry crow
#

Yeah from what I've been reading, seems very straightforward. And since it's not python or anything, I shouldn't need to worry about updates all the time - just set up scheduled patching

clever mortar
#

Yeah, it's like any other package in that regards

wintry crow
#

Oh we'll be installing a standard set of 6 models, all from the same manufacturer, fully CUPS supported

clever mortar
#

That makes life easier then 😄

wintry crow
#

It does when I'm talking about 2-4000 printers lol

clever mortar
#

Aye

wintry crow
#

Any experience with mopria?

clever mortar
#

Nah, everything I use myself these days supports Google Cloud Printing

#

Makes life so much easier

clear ferry
#

Omg cups

#

I haven't heard that abbreviation in... 15 years

wintry crow
#

You not found the huge spool file sizes in google cloud print a turn off?

#

Lol, it's making a comeback

clever mortar
#

As an end user, I have little need for printing monster documents

#

As a professional, I know people who handle these things 😛

wintry crow
#

Hahah

clear ferry
#

I did service in a printing shop once, replaced a KVM in a rack, but the printer was the size of a medium city apartment 😂

wintry crow
#

The good old days...

clear ferry
#

Old? This was 4 years ago 😛

light trout
#

Probably still runs

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I've seen my work's print room. It has printers larger than my first flat

clear ferry
#

I've seen insides of servers that has better room layout than my first apartment 🤷

valid halo
#

I think being sick has dulled my interest in Home Assistant. I was tinkering with my set up daily and now I haven't really touched it for a week

wary jolt
#

I am surfing the web for hardware suggestions for a NextCloud installation, that is not raspberry pi or other pi like board, something that fits a sub $300 budget.
My thought is to run it on a Fedora installation with a ZFS file system and RAID. I think my best bet might be to look for an used server on Craigslist.

hushed basalt
#

Brick is a horrible wall medium for a lot of places

#

But we in Australia are in love with it

#

My house will be double brick simply because I don't have a choice :(

wary jolt
#

In Guatemala people are in love with brick also. I think it has to do with how hot it gets there during the sunny seasons.

hushed basalt
#

It's the worst for hot climates though

#

High thermal mass in the sun = not fun

spiral latch
#

Nah you just use cavity insulation

#

Keeps the heat out

hushed basalt
#

Nah you should use lightweight reflective materials on the outside

#

And the cavity insulation

spiral latch
#

Jardiamj... Thought about an Intel nuc?

hushed basalt
#

Such as weatherboards etc

#

The sun heats up the brick, a lot. And the releases that heat into your house all day and all night

#

Insulation just slows it down but it's better to not retain that heat in the first place

spiral latch
#

Blocks the heat getting in though

hushed basalt
#

Another thing no one pays attention to in Australia is air tightness

#

Just as important as insulation but talk to most builders and they look at you like you're a nutjob

#

An ideal house would be 100% airtight, with massive shading from the sun when it's too hot and maximum solar gain inside when it's too cold. And insulation good enough to retain the temperature

wary jolt
#

@hushed basalt, I agree but there is this general misconception that brick keeps houses cool, and most people in Guatemala don't have the money to pay an architect and so most builder don't have the technical knowledge and just copy what they see.

hushed basalt
#

Exactly the same in Australia :(

#

Even weatherboards over brick would help tremendously

#

It's just sad that there's this huge public narrative about the cost of electricity, the cost of carbon pollution, global warming etc

#

And not a single person talks about how half the reason we use so much electritcy is to heat and cool homes that were designed terribly

wary jolt
#

And it's often hard to get people to understand some simple heat transfer concepts. My wife, for example, kept on opening every window at home when was hot outside because she thought that would coold the house down.
Now, I have a weather station in my backyard and so I kept on telling her not to open the windows unless the temperature outside is lower than the temperature inside the house but it took me a while to get her into that habit.

#

@jon, I have actually thought about a NUC, and I might go that route. I am trying to reduce my dependency on Google services.

hushed basalt
#

Have you looked at Heat Recovery Ventilation @wary jolt

#

You need a certain air tightness though

wary jolt
#

I am reading about it right now, thanks for the info.

hushed basalt
#

It's a great technology. I haven't had much hands on with it but I've stayed in a place in York that had it and I've spoken to a few designers

#

It's a lot more popular in Europe. Big part of Passivhaus

#

But they can easily be installed with a summer bypass vent as well

#

Which basically means when it's colder outside than inside in summer you can have it automatically pull in the cold air

#

While still filtering out all the pollutants

#

And then normally you run everything through the heat exchanger. So you get fresh clean air but recover a lot of the energy from your heating or cooling

#

Watch out for some systems calling themselves recovery ventilators

#

But all they do is pull in air from your roof space and pump it into your house

#

A pro tip though if you do get one. Is to install a very large diameter cheaper filter in the ducting before your HEPA filters.

#

As a cheaper pre filter to stop your expensive HEPA filter getting clogged with crap

clear ferry
#

Recovery ventilation is quite popular in Norway, but here it reuses the hot air inside to heat the outside air being pulled in, helpful in the winters in regards to air quality and less heating spent

Anyone use Home Panel who may be able to help troubleshoot it?

#

When attempting to create an account on the Home Panel Web UI, nothing happens aside from getting an error that the websocket timed out

#

I don't know if there's some manual way to do it?

I also get this error on the HASS Log with the timestamp of trying to use the Home Panel front end: Disconnected: Did not receive auth message within 10 seconds

All I require is three or more monitors, and there are not a lot of soc or mini computers that do that 😛

Heck even few thin clients support it, that would also be an option since I run VMware horizon in my garage anyway 🤷

@clear ferry I have an i7 Macbook pro with 32Gb memory (late 2018 model)... I sometimes wish it had more power...

#

don't see myself working on a Pi

strange vapor
#

@junior forge For most of my desktop work, a few terminals and a browser are all that's required. Pi 3 does work at a pinch, will be interesting to try a Pi 4 with 4G RAM when available.

#

Using a Dell XPS13 for my own stuff these days.

clear ferry

@junior forge my primary desktop is a windows machine from 2009, but I usually work in my virtual desktop which is a triple head 32gb 6core system, what I have in the frontend doesn't matter much, just need something with triple head output on my desk 😛 🤷

junior forge

I work on a single screen

#

and like to have my stuff portable, so I can work anywhere

#

(have to say, my single screen is a 43" ultra wide monitor)

I used to have 5 screens, but currently have 3, I prefer segregating my customers to their own screen, so I can work on 3 at once

So, question - I was looking at buying my first Pi this week - with the launch of the 4,should I hold off a week or two to allow time for teething issues and to allow software to catch up

flat lintel

Dual LG UltraFine 27-inch 5K displays

#

Still need more power although mostly because compiling Home Assistant for iOS takes... a while

#

Currently build time is like 1.5 hours from scratch but that’s due partially to an Xcode bug. It’s really like 45 minutes. And that includes the Watch app

#

Got my eye on a iMac Pro in the near future

clear ferry
#

If I get a Superdome Flex in my garage you can borrow CPU time @flat lintel , hopefully 896 cores and 64tb of ram will suffice 😛

flat lintel

It's x86, we'll get it running as a hackintosh 😂

strange vapor

@flat lintel Fan of keeping builds away from desktop. Relative easy to do these day. Compiling for iOS does complicate things though 😄

#

So Travis kills the builds thinking it’s hung

well.. it's composite...

Maybe I'll just do a pi zero and a pi4 and synergy between them 😛

low harness

Hm... just opened the nespi case up... and I think it could work... 🤔

sorry, felt asleep in between... there was questions why, so lemme explain: i tried smb before - it even doesnt notice me if connection broke, so i keep on editing and editing and editing and nothing happened. so im mad with smb. afp was super before on v2, i had a drive called homeassistant on the finder. i navigate to the files i wanna edit, clicked on it, and it opens in bbedit and could do my editings on configuration.yaml, in all subfolders i created, even could tinker around in .storage. i'ld like to have this again exept:

  • smb grwon up, deactivate the drive if connection break or even notice me.
  • afp is really dead.
  • there are better options.

hoepfully answered all questions. im ready for discussion and open in many directions. so what do u use for this purpose raspi <-> mac

Never see problems at my customers that work with MacBook and SMB shares, both wired and wireless, and they work with anything from 4kb to 100GB files 🤔

someone meight know what happens when I add an empty ssh file to the SD card of an pi 🤔
I just edit my img

light trout
#

by itself, nothing

hearty depot
#

I guess nothing does 🤣

light trout
#

correct 😉

#

on raspbian (maybe others) a ssh file in the root of the card tells the OS to enable the ssh server.
But that file on it's own on a pi... wel... a pi needs an OS to boot, so it will not do anything

hearty depot
#

ah ! - I just change the offset! then I get to the right partition

Aww - thats prittey cool imo
fdisk -u -l 2019-04-08-raspbian-stretch-edit.img to check where the partition starts , then the number * block size to mount with mount -o loop,offset=50331648 2019-04-08-raspbian-stretch-edit.img 🎉

#

Now i have to decide if I want to use that method to the link I posted or find some other method of installing Home assistant on ubuntu 😃

peak cloud
#

Well, if you migrate toward dedicating the full NUC toward Hass.io, you'll have to rely on Hass.io add-ons to support what you want. If you spin up a VM on the NUC, you can keep your NUC the way it is, and just run Hass.io with limited resources.

cedar pollen
#

yea cant give up the full NUC it already has plex running on it, and well I mean I could considering Hass.io has a plex server but how reliable is that? Its more of a keep it self contained or... not..

Any Russians in here? It's driving me mad that I can't figure out what tv series a Russian guy next to me on a plane once was watching down

#

The story was two factions of agents or something, trying to make something, one faction went to Finland to kidnap a female scientist to make something for them, they had a guy who did martial arts in a farmer's jumpsuit

#

The other faction was hiding in the woods trying to stop them 😂

And the story flipped between Finland and Russia back and forth

Has anyone had any luck using an ESP to open a garage door that has Security+ 2.0? It's some proprietary thing that makes it where I can't just use a dry contact relay.

I know opengarage has an adapter, but I have a bunch of NodeMCUs laying around

@amber mantle i think you just need to sacrifice a remote to the gods

And solder the contact to that switch

Ahhh this is was worried about

I suppose I can

Or you could buy the security 2.0 adapter from opengarage

@amber mantle I'd be keen to find out too

I know my opengarage is just a relay contact

So if the adapter talks to the relay on the opengarage it should be operable from any device that can close a circuit. Even a paperclip
