were you using anyhing before 1password?
yeah...
adds that to The List of things to buy once I get my summer job
@odd mist KeePass
@peak cloud , I've used KeePass (became garbage), LastPass (also became garbage), and am currently using DashLane.
@valid halo $3/mo is so worth it. I ended up springing for the $5/mo family bundle so that I can get all of my employees on it too, for my company passwords.
It works well with my setup of macs and iphones..
That's what I currently use KeePass
Yes, KeePass used to be amazing, but you're absolutely right, it became garbage.
I'm still using lastpass
LastPass I've heard is great, too.
my wife has learned how to use it
Perhaps my use case is different. how is it garbage?
I'd be afraid to switch to something else
I did a comparison on the two, and both are nearly identical in feature sets.
My company used LastPass for our customer environment password keeping, and it clashed so bad with my DashLane for my personal stuff.
lastpass has definitely gotten better in the past 3 months
1P just recently released their 1Password X Chrome extension -- amazing!
@valid halo KeePass just wasn't keeping up with competitors at all (at least when i quit using them) and were lagging in support.
You guys use GitHub UI much? If so, check out these userscripts I found the other day: https://github.com/Mottie/GitHub-userscripts
Ah. I see
@sturdy juniper That's what happens when you have such fragmented software. The official was only supported on Windows, and everything else was just implemented by other developers.
If you don't have Tampermonkey for Chrome, get it now. โค
I remember my primary annoyance with Last Pass before I switched was the mobile app wasn't syncing with the main one on my pc
even though it was supposed to do so for free
(if you're willing to play with Javascript and need to run userscripts)
I was really impressed how fast 1P synced.
So far KeePass has been much better in that regard
though I am using a third party app that grabs the database from Dropbox
so that could easily be a massive security hole
Yeah, that's what I was doing, but it was garbage for maintaining different vaults.
Ahhhhhh. I currently only have one vault which is myself.
I have to have multiple vaults: one for corporate (me, my business partner, and my GM), one for my online employees, and one for each store.
I can see why you'd have trouble with it.
I don't want to share all of my personal passwords with all of my employees ๐
That's a lot of files to keep updated and synced and logged
There was no way for KeePassX MacPass (macOS) to open multiple files in the same window, and it was difficult to keep the different folders synced with the other files.
Speaking of, I should probably import all of my KeePass stuff. Chrome was easy to import.
Maybe I'll give LP another try
I already imported personal keepass stuff.
it was nice to have it autofill all my apps
for sure
Let me go check it's onboarding instructions
I am that confident that you'll like it. I've used it on Windows, macOS, and iPhone, and everything is so perfect.
It even plays well with keychain on iOS.
Keychain is what stores your passwords on iPhone.
(and syncs with macOS seamlessly)
It's all integrated into the OS.
Okay so I have to export my KeePass 2 stuff and then use a converter tool to make them work in 1 Password
"Along with a master password, 1Password utilizes a โsecret keyโ which never leaves your login devices, and is required for logins. That holds some advantages over multi-factor authentication, though it does mean that 1Password does not have the option of hardware or software based, third-party authentication systems. It does offer fingerprint logins, for those who like to use biometrics to authenticate themselves."
https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/lastpass-vs-1password-comparison/
Fingerprint Login slaps as the kids say
I have no idea what that even means.
I exported my personal KeePass stuff and imported to 1P no problem.
I think I used CSV.
It means it's good.
I still enjoy keepass, the database is behind two levels of authentication and I can use fingerprint to login ๐คท
I am about to do it again for a diff vault, so I can let you know how difficult the process is.
Or actually three levels if I count keepass itself
There is a pretty neat converter tool available. That's probably what you read about.
Sometimes I do grow concerned using KeePass
since I'm C+P into programs.
Then again if someone has that kind of access. I'm screwed as is
Anyways onto trying out 1Pass so that dale is happy
So you just export as CSV?
grumbles and walks off to find his wallet
I believe so.
Send me your receipt and I'll send you over 1/4 of the annual payment if you do the $3/mo single-user subscription.
The two things I haven't tried and cannot endorse: 1P on Linux and 1P on Android
Lol, good. Just tell your Alexa to remind you to message me when it comes time to buy (if you choose to)
KK
The fact that their Windows experience is better than the macOS experience, I have faith that Android experience is going to be bomb.
CSV import from KeePass didn't work right lol
my passwords become the User names XD
I gotta install strawberry perl
Ewwwwww
I know right. More WORK
I am testing out the mrc converter suite.
Even my android app for keepass let's me select .csv as output here ๐คท
Oh you need to convert it after the export?
he said the KeePass export swapped his passwords and usernames... I would think if that were the case, he could just change the headers in the csv to reverse them...
not that i've tested that, just thinking adjusting the headers might be a valid option..
@valid halo That converter worked pretty well!
On mac I had to edit the "helper" script a little so that it could find the perl file.
OOFT
Yeah, no bueno.
I generate 32 character random passwords with special characters, numbers and both cases per site, I never reuse a password ๐
@clear ferry Some sites (I have no idea why!) don't allow certain characters in passwords, and some don't allow longer than a certain amount. ๐ข
@valid halo If you use Chrome, install 1Password X extension.
I have been changing my passwords slowly but surely. Won't say how long they are, or how many of which characters ๐
But I do know that 1P makes it sooo easy to change htem.
@peak cloud I've only encountered it on two sites, then I lowered it to 16 characters and no special, and it was fine ๐คท
"Must be changed every month. Eight Character Max. No numbers or spaces and cannot be the same as last six passwords."
Glad 1P worked out @peak cloud
Itโs the only password manager that is thoughtfully designed
Asus Merlin only allows passwords up to 16 characters ๐ฎ
@peak cloud normie routers ๐
Yeah yeah yeah. I'm wanting to get an Edge router one day.
Those are even more normie these days it seems, everyone has them if you listen to this discord ๐
I'm good with my Untangle setup for now..
Untangle was fun, but I'm definitely going back to pfsense before the summer is over
Just need to find the time ๐
Untangle has been good to me. and their workshops are cool
lol, i just looked at my untangle instance, and it's been up 166 days. we had power outages twice in the past 3 months during the night. I guess those old UPS batteries ARE still good.
at least, good enough to bridge the gap
You get a ups header for the pi
It's quite nice
I still haven't really figured out what I'm gonna do with this atomic pi i have sitting on my desk.
I thought about putting hassio on it..
Ooft
just not sure i trust it yet
retroPI, or maybe a androidtv box..
maybe finally getting around to building a carputer
the AutoPi project really sparked my interest.
Had a colleague build a carputer back in 98, it was huge ๐
A carputer?
well, back then i wanted to build an mp3 player for my car, using advantech sbc's
Now, I can throw a Pi on a OBD2 dongle with a touchscreen and get a lot more from it.
CAN bus hacking too
I had a raspberry pi in my Audi A8, I connected it to the TV tuner and streamed Kodi via WiFi to it, it was ok ๐คท
I honestly don't see a use case for a Carputer for myself
I've got AA and Bluetooth in my Jetta
Maybe Car presence?
my 2010 chrysler doesn't have a ton of creature comforts, Bluetooth included..
I spend up to 6 hours of a day in my car, so streaming is a must
yeah, eff that noise..
I cover 400km in all directions by car, and the rest of the country by plane, I use 20gb mobile data per month ๐
W what do you Do?
from what i've heard him talk about, i'd be willing to bet he's in charge of a bunch of cool shit.

you do sound like a badass, sir. good job on finding a position that lets you flex on folks. ๐
I'm just a sr. tech support engineer for a fairly well known software company.
I opted to take on a position without requiring travel, due to starting a family young.
you're based out of the UK, right @clear ferry ?
Pole Assistant?
Software, that only leads to trouble ๐คข
trust me, i have already realized that.
@sturdy juniper no, Los Norway ๐

It's definitely a place on my list to visit.
Furthest I've been is new Zealand, but I've been in atleast 1/3 of Europe and the states a few times ๐
another one of the places i want to go to.. ๐
Did Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Denmark just in the last 60 days ๐ฎ

I want to go to Vietnam ๐
I want to ride a motorcycle thru Vietnam, like the top gear guys did, my favorite episode
Yeah, my friends used to dog me about being so social and networking all the time.. Earned me the name Hollywood once.
Vietnam is by far the most exciting place I have visited
Had a friend who worked with automation, he flew 250 days per year, had platinum in all airlines, but that is to much for me
Oh gosh
but now, my linkedin is packed. ๐
Y'all are making me remember a man
who bought a lifetime ticket from American Airlines
he flew so much they revoked it
"Do I look like a man who's flown all he can?"
Next big trip will have to be Japan though, three weeks with different cities and some Shinto trial hiking
Ooooh
As a Weeb I think one day I should visit Japan and take in the pretty sights
anime shows such nice scenery
0.06ms latency for NVMeOF, nice
made some improvements to my setup, thought I'll share, as some of you seemed to like last time... ๐ https://github.com/solidcake420/home_assistant
Yay, another user joins the 1Password hord
@brisk glen Sarcasm? ๐
Nay. I love 1Password
Still gotta install on phone
@hushed basalt The watch is one of those Fossil Hybrids so it can't send a notification instead of an alarm. More importantly the alarm feature cannot be tripped by a notification, although a notification can make it vibrate so that's something to consider.... And about waking up at different times. Yeah it's probably not great for me but I'm a shift worker with 3 different shifts that happen without any pattern so....
Sounds awful haha
I can't stand changing shifts
Have you looked at a Xiaomi watch?
You can get shaker alarms as well
If it's directly under your pillow and the sensitivity isn't too strong it should wake you up before her
But even my wifes iwatch vibrating can wake me up so it just depends. There's no silver bullet
You could set up a high power laser that burns you, that would wake you up :D
I miss my bedshaker alarm ๐
This is the alarm I used to have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OOWZUK/
Maybe I'll just go down the route of my bedside light gradually increasing brightness to 75% and then 20 pushbullet notifications 2 seconds apart.
Although the annoying thing about that is I can't turn off the pushbullet notifications once I get up
Unless I use appdaemon to put it on a while loop until the motion sensor detects movement ๐
Have you looked into the Z-Wave sirens? They make great alarm clocks ๐
I set mine up so that the only way I could turn it off was to login to the UI and disable it.
The (most important) prerequisite in all this is not waking the wife at the same time ๐
(It would go off for a few seconds, then wait a little while, then go off again)
Well that's no fun!
Electro-stim unit.
Super quiet. ๐
I'd have to remember to put it on :/
Hah, then you're not playing with the right one.
Get something that can go under the sheets where you lie.
now wants to do this.
I wonder what the WAF on that would be if she crawls to my side of the bed just before it goes off ๐ค
๐
So now this brings the question -- do you like it when she crawls over to your side of the bed? ๐
I'm not automating a wife defense system if that's what you're asking ๐
That certainly answers the question appropriately!
Anyhow current project is getting MQTT Broker and Zigbee2MQTT up and running.
Taking a while, but slowly getting there.
What installation method are you running?
If Hass.io, it should just be a couple of clicks.
I can't seem to get it to connect to the Mosquito Broker addon
Keeps throwing Not connected to MQTT server!
homeassistant does manage to connect to Mosquitto though.
Progress! I got it to throw an authentication error.
At least now I know it's connecting.
You need to supply a user in newer versions of mosquitto, that was not the case in earlier releases
I have, in the acl conf file etc
Success!
I was putting the username/password in the conf file of /share/zigbee2mqtt rather than in the Hassio addon
I think this is what's so addictive about this hobby. It's tricky and you need to learn new things to get things up and running but it's really satisfying when you finally get something new to work.
Great, now I just need to mount them properly on the garage door.
I really need to sort my setup... sooooo many errors in the dashboard. Wemote is working but is doing everything twice so not so good.
Anyone want to come do my job for a week so I can sit down lol
I am new here, so please forgive me if I am asking this in the wrong place. I have homeassistant and google home running without any issues. I add my hass account to google home (through the cloud nuba casa login), and everything seems just fine, and integrated.
The problem starts when I try to manage my routines on google home. Trying to edit an existing routine, or adding a new routine -> Google Home Crashes.
Any ideas what would cause that?
I have done the obvious. Flushed cache. Uninstalled reinstalled google home. Disconnected all other accounts from google home. Disconnected and reconnected HASS.
@devout kayak When you say Google Home crashes, you mean the app on your phone?
Or does it fly off the shelf and crash on to the floor? ๐ค
Usually when my Alexa does that I threaten it with a hammer and it calms down
I would just threaten it with "do that one more time and I will trade you in for a Google home"
Alexa domination, I'm sure there is a subreddit for that ๐ค
Euuugh
I went with Google, figuring they have more data so their models would be more accurate...
@civic ember to be fair, I did just submit "How the fuck do commercials still trigger you?" to my Google Home feedback.
Luckily there are no commercials in this house
I only get commercials when my girlfriend uses YouTube.... I really ought to get her YouTube Red...
@upper tinsel good thing it wasn't triggered by commercials from other "tubes" that could get awkward๐ค

isn't google home literally just listening for soundwaves that match the general idea of "hey Google"
it feels hard to filter for that
Yea, but they ran into issues with companies like Burger King taking advantage of it. Plus it's suppose to know who is using it.
You'd think on their own commercials they would include some sound that tells the Google Home "hey, don't activate".
Same thing for activating your phone and the Google Home
I'd love for them to use ultrasonic sounds from the Google Home to basically tell phones in the room to not activate when the wake phrase is heard. And the same could be used in their commercials. ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

@clear ferry browsers are starting to block non-SSL?
Aye, they have started giving error already, and by end of year I think chrome was supposed to do it, Firefox was either earlier or later
Read about it before Christmas somewhere
got any links to this?
Not right now, it might have been just speculation, but I'm pretty sure I saw a timeline somewhere ๐ค

So far it seems alright. It's only been a day tho
Okay
Finally have my homeassistant on host network and behind a reverse proxy
Traefik is really hard to learn
What's the advantage of using Traefik?
It natively integrates into docker
So you can do stuff like automatically creating routes when containers go up or down
I haven't really used any other reverse proxies though
Do you mean what's the advantage of traefik vs other proxies. Or whats the advantage of traefik vs nothing
I still haven't started messing with docker containers so I don't know what issues there are.
That's the next "big" project. Either that or wiring my old home alarm to the raspberry pi.
I meant why do you need a reverse proxy in docker?
Hi. Just wondering - shouldn't there be new release last week?
@severe parcel schedule has changed recently, there were mentions in the podcast about it and there was a blog post
Hey guys I'm stuck at home and need a suggestion for a project to do this morning. It's between putting together a pc out of old parts, installing linux on it then Hassio on docker or wiring the GPIO of a raspberry pi to my old home alarm to integrate it into HA.
Last one for sure, the other two are just boring ๐
Cool. I'll need 3 wires I'm thinking. 2 to close a switch on the alarm to activate/deactivate and 1 to get the state from the alarm.
Although I wonder if it will be a security issue if you can deactivate the alarm by jumping those cables ๐ค
Just a very general and quite fundamental question (which I guess can earn some bad-will?)
Why was this excellent and much appreciated group not created on Slack? This gamer IM/chat/talk platform don't seem to be as great for the purpose it seems to want to achieve? Slack seems to be a better service for the purpose.
I've used slack, discord and teams, I enjoy discord by far ๐คท
there are ethics problems with slack https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3068611/slack-is-banning-people-whove-visited-us-sanctioned-countries
@clear ferry - Yes this may be a good personal opinion but for purposes like sharing short snippets of code, threaded discussions and quick image uploads there are (in my, again, personal opinion) better tools than Discord that (if I with my limited experience) focuses on a gamer community.
I mostly wanted to raise the discussion and understand why the decision was made to use Discord instead of Slack.
There is a HUGE drawback to slack (free version) you can only search the last 10000 mesages
Discord have image support (we have just disabled it for most channels (people posted images of text (log/config)))
Discord have code format
To format your text as code, enter three backticks on the first line, press Enter for a new line, paste your code, press Enter again for another new line, and lastly three more backticks. Here's an example:
```
DO NOT repeat posts. Please edit previously posted message, here is how -> https://bit.ly/2qOOf1G
I personally like Slack, but I think Discord is a good fit for this community
Thanks @light trout for the explanation.
Yes, I agree the 10k message limit is a bad drawback however a non-profit org like HA should get the benefit of a paid version for free, right? - Anyway switching now is probably way too late..
I think they only give that to registerd non-profits
Probably true.
Red cross using discord? Sounds practical๐
Before discord, we used gitter.im, this is a blog post from when we moved https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2017/07/03/home-assistant-is-moving-to-discord/
Not a bad idea
So my dad's garage got broken into over the weekend. The burglars taped the door to their bedroom that walks out onto the back deck where the garage is. They also placed some noisy stuff in front of the door to alert said burglars if they open it. They got away with a couple ipads, a laptop, cellphone, tools, and were going after his truck but couldn't find the keys.
I want to buy some some "smart home" stuff for home security to begin securing his house / garage. He's not very tech literate (he just got Google Mini's and loves them). I don't want something the requires home-assistant, but instead some stuff that can be monitored/managed through an app. Was thinking basic to start like camera/motion sensors face the doors in the garage, and the backyard. If motion is detected while away or overnight I'd like for them to be alerted, with the possibility of an alarm sounding. I know there's a lot of options out there but does anyone have recommendations on products they've used successfully? Also don't want a monthly contract
@tall pawn sorry to hear that sucks
Philips Hue stuff might be a popular easy solution
You would need a Hue Bridge but that's not a big deal
Then you could get their motion sensors and connect them to google home
IFTTT can be used to tie stuff together as well
Cameras are harder
I would use cameras to look after getting a motion alert from the motion sensors
False positives are pretty common on camera motion detection
You can also use door/window sensors as well
I haven't used Philip Hue myself though. It's pricey but it's common as hell which usually means it's more refined
hm, I have Hue stuff but I never considered it for a "security" solution
I was looking at Ring, Nest, Abode, Yi Outdoor Camera
I would look at whatever works best with Google Home
But false positive alerts on cameras will annoy them
Also prevention is the best cure
Look at practical stuff like motion triggered lights outside, less places for bad guys to hide, etc
Deadlocks that can't be taped
Yeah, I was sort of hoping there'd be some solution like cameras that have options on when to alert and when not to. A camera facing the garage to record any "creepers" would be nice, but don't need alerts for it. Inside the garage however having motion/camera facing the doors seems like it would avoid false alerts. Assuming that it's "armed" only when away or in bed
Deterrent is definitely more important
If the light level is the same it should be okay
But a lot of cameras will alert when it changes to night vision, or a car driving past shines through a window, etc
yeah tell me about it, my Ring doorbell camera is annoying
Abode looks nice but seems a little hard to get a hold of in Canada
Personally I'd use less 'smart' cameras
Generic CCTV IP cameras will generally be better quality for cheaper
And you'll need a NVR if you want to record anyways
But it doesn't have to be an all at once thing too
Start outside. Assess the house for weaknesses.
Blindspots ๐
A simple motion-triggered bright outdoor light goes a long way to improving security.
Also do not underestimate dummy cameras
My Xiaomi gateway used to play the dog sound when motion was detected on my front porch ๐
Man, I miss that thing.
I knew I was going to regret selling all most of my home automation stuff.
I am going on two years of being without a fully automated home. ๐ฆ
@peak cloud gotta tell you, I sometimes associate music with people as a memory reflex, and whenever I see your nick all I think of is Peter Gabriel - Steam
Please do not hate me, but I have no idea who that is, nor that song.
Haha it's 90s or maybe late 80s
Not gonna like, I very much enjoyed that song. Read the lyrics as I listened to it, though.
And curious -- do you know why (and if so, why?) you associate that song to me?
hi everyone, new noob here!
HIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE @coral coyote!!!
i'm new to all this, and i find it pretty challenging
i managed to install home assistant yesterday on my freenas server, and fought with permissions until now it's all up and running
I can definitely understand your frustration. How can we be of assistance today?
i'm looking to connect my first application: plex. I would like my home assistant to at least pick up the status of playback
i understand i should use the "sensor" part of the Plex component, correct?
my aim is to write a script that turns on the lights when Playback=pause and sun=below horizon
also, when i want to restart hass, clickling call service on Homeassistant.service does not work anymore, what did I break this time?
Go to configuration then general then click the "check config" button to check that
"Configuration valid!"
No errors in
(bottom left of the screen)?
i got one error for permissions that i should be able to fix, but no idea about the others
All those could actually be premission related too
i doubt those are related to the restart issue though
it was working fine yesterday before i started pressing random buttons
They should not be
are you familiar with the spotify integration?
"familiar" I tried it about 1,5y ago, what's your question?
i am trying to set it up, following the instructions on hass's site
it picks up the config correctly, asks me to connect to spotify, but when i click the link to sync i get this error
INVALID_CLIENT: Invalid redirect URI
Make sure you use the url from the example on the doc page in the Spotify developer settings
this is the link it's trying to send me to (blablabla is mine). the http%3A does not sound correct
yes i used that
%3A is just encoding, that's normal
ok then i have no idea ๐
in the "Redirect URIs" what port should i add?
i understand i should put the public ip of my server, is the port the default hass port 8123?
You need to use the exact same thing as you use to connect to home assistant
but with the public ip instead of the local ip, correct?
When you access home assistant do you use local ip or public IP?
at the moment locally
Then you should set it to local
Oh FYI @peak cloud had to cut you from my plex ๐ I have hit the 100 users cap so culling people who never used it haha
thanks @light trout that worked ๐
Yea lol... Found that out the other day.. .turned the guest account on for the house sitter and went to share libraries and it was like umm nooo 100 people max shares
@peak cloud I do not, probably because of your profile picture, but my memory works in strange ways, I've never been diagnosed, but I believe I'm touching the spectrum somehow ๐
@light trout now i have a different problem, i clicked 2 times too many and now i have 3 statuses of spotify in my home page ๐
anyone that can/wants to help me with this plex integration? I'm following the instructions from https://www.home-assistant.io/components/plex/ but i'm failing hard
Was meant to fix my install today and move it all into a docker.... Didn't even get time to download the docker... love life.
Hi all,
I switched from Domoticz first to Homey. As this was a drama I learned about Home Assistant. Now installed on Rpi 3b works great but I still need to learn a lot
Whats your all opinion of pure yaml configuration vs configuration of things inside home assistant
i kinda like the gui config... you can still edit the code but sometimes its easier to use the dropdowns to find entities
I'm an awkward git, so I tend to stick with Yaml so I understand what's going on underneath. Probably comes from a background where everything is code these days, and with the right tools it's a hell of a lot faster to search a few yaml and json files.
I also stick to yaml - mostly because I cant use !include in the storage mode - and for more advanced cards the storage mode is a pain
Would still live to use both
sorting is just nice
https://i.imgur.com/5Cwon1L.png
@hushed basalt I go yaml when I can, I prefer it there if I need to restore a configuration, the integrations wont restore as easy I suppose
HomeAssisstant should still work on making damn sure that config via the UI is very much possible! We're likely the exceptions, the majority of sane people do like their point and click, and for good reason!
Just don't break Yaml in the process for the awkward gits ๐
I wish I could define windows with yaml
powershell will have to do!
Ansible isn't really there on win10
@clear ferry I was going to say point and drool, but that would be a bit unfair!
Chocolatey can go die in a fire
Although Ubuntu feels like YetAnotherAptRepository a lot
I just hate the lack of feedback from most gui based stuff, I never know if it is actually doing anything or if it is bugging out for some reason
I was speaking to a guy today who runs a software company for school administration
A monolith app with msi installers to run on windows 'servers'
I'm glad I missed that period of software
Cloud native microservices for the win
lol, we never did that when I worked with schools, we just pushed msi's via gpo ๐คท
and had standard policies per school \ per area
I managed 55 schools, so there were a few policies ๐
He was talking about how they're thinking about moving to the cloud
Btw, did we kill @clever mortar ? ๐คท
Tinkerer is away for 3d 18h 43m 52s with a message :point_right: Planes, trains, and automobiles... I'll be back, eventually.
But yes I agree
Homeasisstant should definitely go down the gui route
But please keep it yamlable
anyone here who tinkered with the Plex integration that could help me?
I touched it once, what is the problem ?
been trying to figure it out since this morning, but i can't make it work
basically i'm stuck at making hass discover the plex server
I use the tautulli component for tracking usage
aye, so it should discover it automatically if you have discovery: in your configuration.yaml
and then it should show up under integrations
ok that is the part i definitely missed. i didn't know i needed discovery: in config
You don't need it, but it makes it easier
You can create it manually with :
- platform: plex```
then create the plex.conf file in your /config folder with the contents of {"IP_ADDRESS:PORT": {"token": "TOKEN", "ssl": false, "verify": true}}
done both
media_player:
- platform: spotify
client_id: 28bf93ca95c449f9b1ff718e1b569467
client_secret: 86e7ab1f7b434770ac05be92b56446c1 - platform: onkyo
host: 192.168.1.2
name: Onkyo Amplifier - platform: webostv
- platform: plex
host: 192.168.1.21
port: 32400
this is what i have in config. Onkyo, WebosTV and Spotify are running fine. Plex does not show up anywhere even in the dev tools
i made a plex.config file with {"192.168.1.21:32400"} as content
the ip and port is not to be placed in configuration.yaml I belive you would put it in the plex.conf file with {"192.168.1.21:32400": {"token": "TOKEN", "ssl": false, "verify": true}}
you also need to see if you actually use SSL then toggle that
and if you certificate is self signed you need to set verify to false
and you need to put the token in that file also
i had all that stuff in earlier, then i read it's "optional", will try your way
should i put discovery: somewhere?
not if you configure it manually
i changed according to your suggestion but still i don't see plex anywhere
in dev-state I can see spotify, onkyo and the rest. but not plex
have you restarted HA after changing ?
let me check my plex, I haven't integrated it
what is the syntax to enable discovery?
Just "discovery:" in a new line?
all set up plex xD
what do you mean?
I just start to integrate plex too
do you remember which steps you took?
@coral coyote so I tested
Discovery did not work
but manually adding worked fine
all I have is the following in configuration.yaml ```
media_player:
- platform: plex
and in `plex.conf`
``` {
"192.168.1.x:32400": {
"ssl": false,
"token": "W12345677",
"verify": false
}
}
then the configuration button appears in the states UI
How you'd get the token?
carefully
hey guys
weird issue here
im using esphome to log my temp / humidy through a sonoff basic with the DHT11
esphome is updating eacch minute, as per the logs visable
but the HA logger keeps dropping the value, and only updates at random timelimes
I still haven't managed to make HA recognize plex
Use webhooks instead, much faster
@clear ferry my token looks very different than that
ok thanks
i had discovery on, i removed my old plex.conf file and it created a new one by itself. That makes me think something is moving
it picked up the right server because it wrote the correct IP, just the token is missing. but the file is locked and I can't write
Hey does anyone know of any devices or systems where I can have a smart button that also shows configurable feedback? I have "house modes" bound to binary inputs in hass and I'd like a real life mirror of hose switches so that you can see if they are off or on via LED or something.
claim-HSxxxxx or only HSxxxxx?
claim-hsxxxxx
working already over there?
no it's not working yet for me, but i just came back for lunch
ok thanks @clear ferry
@untold cypress if you are in the us there is a self building one, I don't remember the URL, but @light trout might remember, the ha-switchplate that luma made
:/
were you able to make it work @hearty depot
?
i am now able to see chrome is playing music from plex
nope
i was surprised nothing was visible until i left chrome playing from plex (streaming) and then redoing it from scratch
I can see but cannot control Plex Media Player, is that correct behavior?
Made this video to share a few things I was able to make with home assistant and the continuous help from many wonderful people of this community , it is in Spanish but there is not much to explain . https://youtu.be/S2bs1lH_MG4 .
what can we automate at home? how that works ? how to do it? This is the first part , of WHAT could we automate at home.
okay, i figured it out, its not "force updating" the values, its only doing it on value change

Question: if you have an automation named "test" will it simply never run?
Why would it not run?
Because it's a test

@vale slate Suggest reading about what an alias is
show me the way ๐
a false name used to conceal one's identity; an assumed name:
it's not a function
or a descriptive of what it ACTUALLY will do necessarily
Right, listen. Programing languages have lists of reserved words. If there are reserved words for names of things should that not be in the documentation. The idea that a script named test does not run is intuitive, but only after the fact and only because I have a programing background did I even make this leap.
No matter what you call an automation, it will not stop it from running
an automation named test will not run
it will
Is it turned on?
All my automations (when I have one) have allways (for the past year) been named test
I had two automations at the same time called 'test' at one point ๐คฃ

I know this might be a little off point. But Iโm after some advice. Iโm looking to run a CAT5E cable from my living room to the attic running along the outside wall. Can someone advise on the type of cable I need and if there are any types I need to avoid, thanks in advance from the uk
@snow oar : go 6 or 6a if possible, and run 2 sets. Make sure your ground at both ends is the same (this is a big deal) and you get a bit of future proofing. Your local building code is going to be a bit pedantic on what you can run in a wall/attic, and is going to be foucsed on your local fire regulation/prevention more than anything else. While your doing the install rent or borrow a GOOD cable tester (you will likely never need this item again) and test the connection once it is in place.
Thanks @vale slate
I will say this, do you really need the bandwidth a cable provides to that location

Anyone got a recommendation for a cheap / reliable occupancy sensor? Been thinking about setting up internal CCTV and using motion detect to signal occupancy but at the same time im not sure how I feel about having cameras in my home. (ugly and dont like the thought of being recorded)
I like the zigbee ones - the Xiaomi ones are dem ceap - downside you either need an hub or a cc2531 or so
@sage timber Motion sensor detects motion, its not enough for occupancy. I'm looking for a cheap occupancy sensor too, I think does not exist yet.
If motion is enough, the xiaomi work great with my cc2531.
should the VMDK download file end in vmdk.gz?

@sage timber tinkerer has quite a good description of occupancy, don't mix activity with occupancy, he looks at what People are doing rather than if they are moving to detect occupancy ๐

day 4 of my HASSIo install, finally got z-wave to respond. Then, something happened and the entire HASSIO won't boot. I can get console access, but no SSH (disabled) and the web front end doesn't load. Any ideas?

yes
there I`m happy that I have ubuntu in the front

looks like i'm doing this configuration again.

Maybe silly question but....
I have a server at home that is on 24x7. Would you recommend using a vmware esxi HASSio with external z-wave stick versus a raspberry pi?

A raspberry is a good starting point. If you already have a real computer running there's no reason at all not to use it.
prefer virtual so I can back it up easy i think
thomasloven - I'm going to need a raspbeery upstairs as z-wave doesn't seem to go through my walls.
It'll still probably run better in the corner of a real computer than in an entire raspi.
i guess the good thing about Ubuntu is that I have full access to the OS in case I mess something up, right?
Not that it runs badly on a raspberry.
I also have 2 HA instances
one is taking care of my lights with an cc zigbee stick and the other one runs all other stuff
well, i only have 1 server so the sysetm upstairs will be just a z-wave box. The Tuya integration, MQTT server will be on the server
just really upset that I have to do all this again..... Ugh...
I feel ya
what's the reason for having two HAs? Range?
is there a comparison of HA on Ubuntu versus Hassio? I like the simplicity of installing integrations on HASSIO but this episode today where it won't boot is crushing
Mr. K. Yes, I live in Thailand and the z-wave doesn't go well through concrete walls

Mains are 220 in most of the world๐
if you're familiar with Ubuntu it shouldn't be a problem to get stuff to work quite easily afaik
if you are new to linux, it might be more difficult
Mr. K -- Yes, familiar and can google decently. Does it have the same settings as HASSIO?
as far as I know you can do everything you can with hassio, just that you'll have to do it manually
manually as in installing mosquito and such? I bet the z-wave is going to be a b#@$*@. Hassio was simple. Then again I bricked my box
stuff like ssl etc. But I've never tried hassio (yet) so I'm not sure how much of the integrations one needs
mosquito etc. Z-Wave I have no experience with
I'm glad I grew up with slackware ๐
so just to confirm. If I have a HASSIO instal that has something wrong at boot and I don't have SSH or SMB access (101 mistake) but I do have console access, I'm hosed right?
๐ด
well - I still say with console access you can get it back to a working state
yep, but I cannot access the files I need
tyed nano -w /config/xxyy
nano doesn't exist
vi /config/xxyy
i'm basically outside of the HA environemtn. No nano/VI

@orchid rose I can easily see @hearty depot mother's tongue is German or similar, they have the v/f thing, just like Finnish people have the g/c thing ๐ฌ
what g/c thing? ๐ค
Often when I speak to Finnish people they mix up the g/c sound, like saying grazyand creen

I'm a language freak, so I study people I talk to a lot ๐คท
we've (Finns) streamlined our own language by getting rid of these useless g, c and just use k instead. Much easier!

@clear ferry alea iacta est.
What are some options for smart plugs that have energy monitoring, I want to use them to monitor my washers and dryers
TPlink has one, and sonoff makes one
The Sonoff are just wifi correct?
Both of those are wifi
Do I need to flash custom firmware on the sonoff?
https://github.com/peterbuga/HASS-sonoff-ewelink There's a custom component
not sure if it supports all the devices and monitoring
@dark swallow NOK 131.91 60%OFF | Smart Life EU Plug WiFi Control smart Socket Power Metering Timing switch 16A 3680W Voice Control work with Alexa Google IFTTT
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/cH5qxVaY
So I found I do need to flash Tasmota on the Sonoff S31 which I might do because they are cheaper than the TPLink ones but not sure about soldering the sonoff
Also should've mentioned I'm in the US
You don't have to solder to flash
the custom component should support S31 as well if you don't want to flash?
Yeah but then you're reliant on a random chinese cloud platform
@unreal orbit Really I must be looking at an old tutorial
You can solder, but you don't need to. You can just hold the wires in place while it flashes
You should only have to do it once
I have several sonoff devices that I've flashed, I've never soldered once
Ah I see! That makes sense! how do you hold the wires in place? Just your hands?
Usually you can just let the weight of the device hold them in place if you can situate it right
I have held it with my hand before as well
If it fails you just try again, no harm no foul
True, but having limited time and since its for my brother might just do the TPLink so if something goes wrong and he needs to reflash down the road or get a new one I won't need to flash it again
I love my TPLink devices. I've had no issues with them outside of just standard wifi shenanigans that is not the fault of the device
I don't have any energy monitoring plugs, but I have several of the standard plug and every light switch in my house is tplink
they don't need to connect to servers to work right? all local?
Initial setup is through the kasa app, then it's all local
Cool that's what I thought!
There might even be a way to set them up without the kasa app, but it's definitely the easiest way
I have 2 Wemo Mini's but the price jump to the energy monitoring ones is just too big
Yeah either way I am fine with it connecting to an outside server with tp link but I don't want all commands to be cloud based usually too slow
Yeah all HA control is local (and in the kasa app there is local control as well when you're on the same network as the switches)
That's what I figured, why do the ones with energy monitoring have to be so big and oddly shaped! How do companies not realize people plug more than one thing into an outlet!!!!
@dark swallow are these too big?
NOK 126.49 31%OFF | Smart life US power monitoring WiFi outlet wireless plug smart home switch compatible with Google home , Alexa voice control
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/niA9ZMy
Those might work too and the tplink ones should too I'll just have to change what outlets things are plugged into size shouldn't be that big of an issue for this but it might be in the future
Plus you won't have to wait 6 weeks to get them ๐
lol true to that!
All the smart life products on AliExpress can be flashed with #551843800209686539 and #551843558676758569 I use a bunch of them, usually take two weeks to get here
But honestly the price difference isn't too different and not needing to be flashed in the future will be nice

lol I don't see why not ๐
