not that i've see. while i was putting it up my bro in law was watching the feed and he said you can make out the face perfectly
cool
it has a varifocal lens so i'm hoping that helps with all of that
inter-changeable lens?
@last plaza no. take a look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkwNzL93y4c
Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-Z with a 4x optical zoom 2.7 to 12mm motorized varifocal lens (97ยฐ - 34ยฐ horizontal field of view). See my full review if this great low l...
that zoon feature is cool! @odd mason not sure how I can use it in automations though
i don't think you can tbh
i thinks it's more about getting the perfect focus or when there is some sort of issue you can zoom in and see what's going on
I see!
so far I am really impressed with HikVision cameras - they are left in the cold and hot weather for 3 years now - we have had -30 degrees to 110 degrees weather, and they held up great
nice
how many do you have @last plaza
i'm trying to get good coverage around my house but without making my house look like a prison lol
@odd mason I got 4 cameras 2 in the front, 2 in the backyard from different angles
yea that's what i bought too. 4 cams. i'm going to put another cam in the back hard at the opposite side so i've got a camera on the two corners pointing in
I'll tell you what, the cameras are the best thing I did in my house - our neighborhood is pretty safe and good, but you still need the footage once in a while
and maybe to something similar in the front yard
yea same here that's why i'm trying to avoid making it look like it's not a safe place with all the cams
like the other day, UPS guys have delivered a package on my neighbor's backyard instead of frontyard during Christmas time - they were on vacation, and he asked me to check the package, and I didn't see anything in his front yard
not to mention if i'm the only person with cams thieves will think i have shit to protect
then I opened up my cameras as he told me the date and time the package was delivered, and found that guy walking to his backyard
there are so many situations you would be using it for... you'd be surprised
i think i've said like 3 sentences to my neighbors in 2 years i've lived here
I now have a constant live feed on a monitor hooked up with Chromecast, and woks fantastic!
I live in a cul-de-sac and we all get together all the time - everyone knows everyone
i tried casting to chromecast last night via VLC on my iphone and it didn't work :/
are you using rtsp or HLS? CCs only support HLS
like it loaded the url on the chromecast but no video, just blank screen
rtsp
how many 1080p streams do you get from ur cam?
4 streams 1080p?
hmm
my cam gives me 1 stream 1080 and a 2nd stream 720
is that because of your NVR or coming straight from the cam?
they are pretty good resolution - on my monitor, I think they are 1080p
possibly - less than 1080
would be nice if i could get a HD stream into my NVR and have that pipe it out to multiple destinations also at 1080
when you ware watching it on monitor, there is nothing I can complain
yea same here it's definitely good enough
best part is my HA can automatically switch the live stream based on motion - if there a motion detected in the backyard, cameras turn to backyard, after 15 seconds or so, they default back to front yard
@last plaza is your chromecast always running a camera stream?
yes - I've dedicated one to it
so if you're watching something on TV, and there's motion in one of your cams, the TV automatically switches to the chromecast and displays the stream?
that's why I have a monitor - I no longer hooked my CC to TV
ah ok
I see Smartthings support is coming in the next version of HA, curious to get others opinions who are using the smartthings-mqtt-bridge whether they're going to switch over?
I know both are cloud-based solutions but I'm holding out hope that smartthings will eventually give local support for custom device handlers etc
Hi, I'm currently rooting my Xiaomi Vacuum, and ran into something I don't know how to solve. I have to add some values to /etc/rc.local - However I am logged in via SSH, and the vacuum is blocked off from the internet, so can't just install nano, and don't even know if that is viable to do on such a device. Any suggestions?
Why are you rooting it?
to make sure it is not on the Xiaomi cloud
You can't use vi?
And if it's blocked from the internet how would it access the cloud ๐ค
never used vi before, but it showed up
well I only just blocked it from the internet after rooting it basically. Now I just need to make it permanent
By adding to rc.local
vi seems different, got no idea how it works ๐
It's the base unix text editor
so, I have to add 3 lines before exit0
do I just arrow down there and start tapping in? it seems to act weirdly
It's fucking dumb. You gotta look up how to use it, I only use it when I can't use nano and I look up the commands every time
Told you
I only ever use it for basic unix systems. Otherwise it's nano all the way
vi or vim is the best editor hands down - it is for advanced users. nano is light weight for basic editing. It is like comparing notepad with word - uses are different
there are so many vi cheat sheets available online!
So... I may or may not have fried my USB/TTL adapter. Recommendations on a new one?
What is TTL?
@last plaza vi is for masochistic suicidal nerds ๐คฃ
if you got a mental issue it will bring it out ๐
its like manually configuring bind
samba + visual studio code FTW
Or anything + git
so I got a bit of an issue, my mom passed a couple of weeks ago and I have a crappy, histrionic aunt that I'm afraid will raid my mom's house and steal stuff (I already gave her almost everything in the house). My good aunt and uncle are staying in the house until Thursday morning. After they leave it will be empty for a couple of weeks. What's some good stuff I can grab off of amazon so I'll know immediately if anyone opens the doors/enters the house? Any cheap-enough cameras I could temporarily place? I'm not opposed to tossing a Pi with HASS in there to control everything, but I don't have a ton of time.
Old school deadbolt and locks on the doors goes a long way
true, I'll be doing that for sure
it's not the tightest house as-is, and it's absolutely not above my aunt to break in
Other than that, maybe just sign IP for a simplisafe contract?
Well, breaking in is a crime ๐
Could solve your problem in more ways than one of you press charges
sure, but arresting my 75 year old aunt would be a bit much unfortunately in this case
thinking of grabbing just some wireless motion detectors and a camera or two in the meantime
only need it for a couple weeks and I can re-use it later
once my buddy who's going to be my property manager moves in a couple of weeks I'll cut ties with my family and that will be that. No reason to have police or courts to deal with
To each their own
heh, my good aunt couldn't cook dinner last night because evil aunt took the saran wrap while raiding last time (a raid I was there for and was fine with)
Definitely not trying to tell you what to do, I can imagine this is quite difficult enough without a random asshole on the internet piling on
s'ok, I understand
so, amazon can die in a fire and all, but it looks like Ring might be a good, cheap-enough option that I can leave for future tenants too
That can work, check your local rentors laws
holy crap, Ring cameras are prety expensive though
Yeah, that's where they get you
@tropic hedge , the resolution isnโt the best but, for quick and easy go the Arlo route. With WiFi you can have several cameras up in a couple hours. They have free 7 day cloud storage. I wouldnโt recommend them for a permanent solution though.
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
the bot lied!
Are there any Linux Kodi users here? I'm thinking of getting a Kodi box of some sort. Is there any video filtering available on Linux? I'm currently using Kodi on Windows with MadVR and my fear is that the image quality on lower quality videos will be a massive downgrade...
Ugh, spent an hour fighting with a Shelly 1. Out $30 for them and the flash gear and they're just impossible to smash into my boxes without being a massive fire hazard
@orchid rose what do you mean filtering?
sharpening, noise reduction etc
Those do opposite things ...
handbrake, ffmpeg
Filtering also can't add quality where there isn't really. It can remove noise at the cost of a blurrier image or it can sharpen but that might add artifacts
I know what filtering does...
There's the scaling too, but those options I could find in the wiki, and even though it's inferior to what madvr can do, it's good enough for me. But I was just wondering if there's any sort of real-time filtering (post-processing) that you can do on Kodi on a Linux system
probably, considering kodi originally only ran on linux variants
@wet pilot dont you mean the original xbox? ๐
which was a hacky linux at the time iirc
yea i dont think it was until the recent consoles did it become windows based
Hey guys, sorry for probably asking something really stupid... I just rooted my Xiaomi Vacuum last night. I had to do it from a Raspberry Pi, as I could not make it work in a VM under Windows. So the firmware builder generates SSH keys; ssh_host_rsa_key, ssh_host_rsa_key.pub, ssh_host_dsa_key, ssh_host_dsa_key.pub, ssh_host_ecdsa_key, ssh_host_ecdsa_key.pub, ssh_host_ed25519_key and ssh_host_ed25519_key.pub. To connect to the vacuum over SSH, I can only do it from my Raspberry, as that has the key(s). Any way I can transfer those to my PC? Or just use a passphrase without having those keys?
The files you need are the ones not ending in .pub @gusty umbra
The keys won't work in PuTTY without converting them, but there are many SSH clients that'll use the files as they are
I'd suggest Terminus
For anyone looking for more storage for what ever reason
WD 8TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBWLG0080HBK-NESN no limit
$139.99 - https://amzn.to/2t9s5Kq
how do you get that short link?
@tropic hedge they are called amazon referral links - you can search online
yes - they are amazon feature - but you need to have an account for you to make those referral links
they're not all affiliate links.... they used to be easier to retrieve until recently
when your linux server running HA is more stable than an apple tv with homekit....
both are on a UPS
props to HA
Incredible... Shodan never found my Hass instance. Nonstandard ports does indeed hide you from automated scans
A combination of obscurity and simply not being a target worth human attention does actually make good security
Well, it reduces the probability of anybody paying close attention, rather than actual security
It's like hiding the handle on your door, and moving the door to the side of the house. That doesn't really boost security, but the idiots walking by trying all the doors will skip your house
Somebody more determined will look around the sides and back too ๐
maybe it's stupid, but I keep an FTP server running on the standard port, with a folder on write-only access, just to see if someone comes along and tries to dump something
aah ๐คฆ trying and trying to mount a hard drive, no luck for a half hour... Then.. just use another USB port.. don.
Roborock S5 is on sale on amazon for@$409. I think is the cheapest I have seen it.
That's a really good deal. According to Honey that's the lowest it's ever been
Best vacuum ever btw
I pulled the trigger right when I saw it since I have been waiting for it to go on sale.
Very rarely do I have no regrets when buying such an expensive item, but this vacuum has been just amazing. The cleaning pattern is light years ahead of any other that I've seen.
@unreal orbit easy to set up with HA?
What kind of phone do you have? From my understanding it's easier with iOS, but Android wasn't too bad. Just a few extra steps to get the device token
After you get the token it's super easy
And you can map out the coordinates for different rooms in your house so you can clean single rooms with a HA script
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
@unreal orbit do you have the map resetting/overlap issue from time to time?
I only had the map reset on me once pretty soon after I got the vacuum. I think it tries to orient the map so that North is on top
Last few months been ok for me but had back to back issues for weeks. All started with the map saving fw update.
Hopefully it stays this way
I've only had it since December, but so far it's been consistent. I reeeeeeeally don't want to have to map out each room again
Been some time with this, yes the best hands down, compared to roomba which is a joke. Never use clean myself all based on zones. But the map thing was not so great.
About a month ago the orientation completely changed 90 had to redo all the coordinates. ๐
I think I'm going to write a program that gives you the coordinates of any spot you click on.
That would be great. Although now I know the rough coordinates by heart. Lol
But yeah, I have no idea why they don't all clean like this. Perimeter > fill in the mapped area. I don't know how much more simple it could be. It's dynamic, it updates for every cleaning cycle, obstacles are never an issue
As long as the map is not redrawn I am a happy camper.
@pliant forge I don't block it. I'm not really that paranoid, nor do I care if they have my cleaning data/home layout
@pliant forge not bothered about that
Having the cleaning data will only make it better and my house's blueprint is public record to anyone that really cares
If my floor plan and cleaning data floats anyone's boat more power to them ๐
Still perfecting traffic based zone cleaning
Plus my docking spot is under a TV stand, so if there is a secret camera it's only going to see wall
Dang, that is above and beyond anything I've even thought about doing lol
I just have her clean the whole house when everyone leaves
I never use CLEAN all zone based.
We have hard floors, so there's always dust to pickup everywhere. Plus she can do my whole house on max and still have 59% battery left, so might as well haha
Thatโs cool
did not realize there were so many robot cleaning makers... went with iRobot for a variety of reasons but watching it work the first time was a little odd due to the traffic pattern (or lack thereof)
S50 Roborock here and i LOVE it! its awesome need to intergrate to HA yet.
I find the cleanup when I'm not home one of the more useful automations I've set up
just have to remember to pick the cables etc up before leaving home... Came home yesterday to find my headphones and the stand on the floor ๐ข
Ha yeah every once in a while something gets accidentally eaten. Trains you to pick your shit up though ๐
Thatโs the best part about home automation, enjoying the little things.
Lol, reading this chat is very surreal... MEN sitting nattering about housework and ways to make it better ๐
What makes you think we are all men ๐
Hahah good point
Also, if I'm gonna do the housework, of course I want to make it easier/faster/less boring
That's gotta break one of em...
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently
That should do
Oh that's o'right then, I'm always civil lol
@orchid rose , it took me 2 hours to find my cellphone charger the other day. My Roborock carried it around until it got stuck under a door it seems like.
Liking this new update... Especially the JSON attribute topic for MQTT things... I can think of several ways I can (ab)use that. ๐
Oh, it was already there? How did I not know this. It would've solved several issues I've been having...
The forecast is looking snowy over here, around Seattle, WA.
I think I'll have another excuse to spend the whole weekend at home doing random HA stuff.
i swear our cat is trying to destroy the Roomba... keeps putting "dangerous" objects out during cleaning time and then the robot is calling for help at 5:30AM with some cat toy or something wrapped around its innards... ๐
One of the projects I've been working on I've finally posted to my website. It's a work in progress but maybe someone will find it useful:

building a house is stressful.
I cannot wait until the structure is done and the weather cooperates

is this perhaps the right channel for a question about 'asuswrt'?
Depends on the question ๐
If it's about the component then #330944238910963714 is probably a better channel for it
so quickly, i guess... when i installed HA initially, i was seeing a lot of statistics and info about the route in the badges section of my home page... somehow (probably user error? :D) they disappeared... if i look under configuration>intergrations>upnp/igd (?) i see some entries, but they all say "no area" and "entity unavailable"?
route = router
I think you need to configure something in your router in order to use it
hmm... that's not detailed in the 'asuswrt' page of HA's website... i've setup the entry is suggests in configuration.yaml and at some point is was working and then it stopped... i removed the badges at some point, but now i can't get them back ๐
thanks... i'll keep poking at it... nothing serious, the rest is working, although i just had a weird issue where it's duplicating a "tab" in the overview
might again be user error and me not understanding what the various options do when adding a tab/group
Netatmo is still broken and nothing new on the fix PR
can anyone recommend a smart plug or something that also has dimming? (EU)
There are Z-Wave ones of those
@orchid rose pwm dimming ?
for regular bulbs
So I may be able to run Hass.io on an old i3 + 4GB RAM laptop, but I'm wondering if the odroid xu-4 would be faster/better in some other way. Would be nice if someone could chime in and give their own opinion on which would be optimal. Other SBCs aren't out of the question either.
i3 is I suspect going to be faster, even an old one
@clever mortar Hmm. That might be the case, even though the odroid has 8 cores. I'll try out the laptop with proxmox or something running from a usb when I have time.
Thanks
The only annoyance would be the form factor, as well as the old, glossy, chipped plastic case. But I can get a box or something for it
There's not lots of Snips users, plus you're asking over in the channel for non-Home Assistant questions
@clever mortar That's a home assistant question?
More that, if you're asking in here it's assumed to be not Home Assistant related
Ah ok
So, the few folks that do use it, who only use it with Home Assistant, may not answer
Worth reading the channel topics ๐
kk
Hello,
I don't know what's the category to put the following in so I'm writing here, tell me if I've to move this message.
I've opened some pull requests to add platforms or components to home-assistant but lately I've seen people I don't know, on social media asking me to fix their problems or things like that.
Since I don't know the best way to handle them, I'm triaging them and moving to the issues to github.
Sometimes, tho, I've seen people that were more insistent and demanded help in ways that are less than appropriate.
Is anyone facing problems like this one?
The devs see that fairly regularly
We also see some entitled individuals here, though they swiftly get themselves banned
'Your free platform isn't working, I want my money back!'
Indeed, I regularly getting folks DMing me rather than posting in the channels, expecting that I'll help them and getting annoyed when I don't offer one to one support
Something like that @unreal orbit :)
I don't know how to handle them if they dm me on my personal facebook/twitter page.
Maybe it's me, but I don't think it's that polite.
Share your questions with the class, because chances are someone else is having the same problem
It's not, but it's entitled idiots, and the world isn't short of those
Unlink your facebook and twitter from github?
I don't have them listed anywhere. They stalk me! AHAH
Oh damn. Yeah that sucks. I'd just block them as I go
Let the morons know where they can go for help, block them, and move on with your life ๐คท
@clever mortar It works for 50-60% of them
And consider having different usernames for different platforms
There are people that don't?
Apparently not
i want one to one on everything i demand it
There're people that don't get why I've linked them to the discord chat/the forum/the github issues and they get mad for no reason
I mean I don't, but I don't really care about getting cyber stalked
I don't care too, cause it's fairly simple (same username) but you can, let's say, ask things with a good attitude and maybe I'll guide you trough something, if I've some spare time
That would require people being generally decent
But, asking things like:
"I'm using 2 of your platforms and they don't work. It's crap"
See, to me that's insta-block grounds
- they're not mine
- what bruh?
still 10 times better than play store reviews, tho
thank your for letting me let off some steam
We're always here to listen, sometimes here to help ๐
Actually, I lied, there's usually somebody here, but that assumes that you're not all figments of my imagination who disappear when I'm sleeping...
laughed hard at this one
I try ๐
@clever mortar shhh old man
My body may be old, but my mind is... crap, where did it go...?
@clever mortar food for thought just so you can remember
If one of your opponentโs checkers is on a forward diagonal next to one of your checkers, and the next space beyond the opponentโs checker is empty, then your checker must jump the opponentโs checker and land in the space beyond. Your opponentโs checker is captured and removed from the board.
I understand all the words
I'm not sure I understand the sentence ๐
it comes with time ....thats why i keep whooping your arse at checkers
Replace checker(s) with the word boobie(s), because I act like I am only 13 years old
I'm actually jealous. I'm in Oregon and all I have is rain. ๐ข

Proxmox or Unraid for Debian VM. Go.
@lyric pollen esxi always ๐
Why ESXi over Proxmox?
any one using a HA instance at work, or work-related ?
There are some. There's been posts on the forum about people using it that way, and back before Discord there were some folks posting on Gitter about it
I have an instance at work for our insteon stuff
It's labeled 'Work Assistant' because I'm really creative
I think we should have a fourm catagory called In the wild where people can share where they have noticed home assistant in odd places
What's a zero?
Raspberry pi zero
so zero is too slow
at least it always crashes
rpi3a+ is interesting
but i think its still not enough
because of the ram
If the Zero is crashing, then there's a problem with your setup
I set up Home assistant and a pivpn on a zero ^^ to be honest only one timebased automation and 3 switches - but it works
Uh - and all over wireless
The Zero is pretty much the original Pi in a new form factor. I ran on the original Pi for years without issue
wanted to ask - is it possible/a good idea to run pivpn on ubuntu - I like the user creation and the overall feeling very much
Nice - ll get rid of the seccond pi then - wasnt shure if its bound to the ARM processor
Nah, I run it on Ubuntu
@hearty depot or even deploy a proper router, pfsense or untangle or similar that will have built in services like openvpn, so you handle the endpoint on your perimeter instead of inside your network
I guess my EdgeRouter X could do this,,
Doesn't have a nice management interface for the VPN though ๐
Thats why I asked bout the pivpn ^^
any one here using Shinobi ?
@mighty summit tried, didn't like it at all, went back to zoneminder
yea...since asking here...i tried also. Just wiped the VM now.
it's a steaming mess.
@clear ferry thx for posting anyway.
also, if Frenck say it be no good, then it be no good.
ZM ftw i say.
Altho their community is...sad.
Who needs a community with a product that just works @mighty summit ;-D
Hey guys, what's the current popular RF + IR controller with Home Assistant component/good-integration? A friend is using the Broadlink RM Pro but before I rush out and buy thought I'd check.
i believe that's the only one that does it all
Okay cool ๐ thanks @proven spruce are you personally familiar with it? I can't seem to figure out difference between "BroadLink RM Pro" and "BroadLink Rm3 Pro". All good if you're not sure ๐

Hey all- Does anyone here have any experience with hue lightstrips ?
hi there, what channel should I go t to ask for some support on the new SmartThings component?
@ionic temple #330944238910963714 are probably the best channel for that ๐
๐
@cursive nimbus I built a hue lightstrip clone if that helps ๐
@clear ferry Hey...thanks for responding. I have no electrical experience at all. In my home I have 5 sets of (older halogen) under cabinet strips that I would like to replace with hue or something like it.
@clear ferry I would reallly like to splice the hue or similar replacements onto the existing power wires.
You don't have to tag folks in every reply FYI
That sends a notification each time
Thanks tinkerer
If those are mains voltage lights, you'd need to put a DC supply in
I believe that that the existing halogen bulbs are 12v
In that case, putting Hue or similar in should be trivial
That is what I am hoping. I should be able to cut and splice in the new light stirps somehow?
Afraid on ruining both the existing strips and the hue strips at the same time !
Probably, assuming the supply is really the required voltage, and can supply at least the required amps
#diy-archived can likely help you more with that though
Really wish I could find the transformers
Getting it wrong would be expensive
I will head to DIY ๐
man i love that proxmox management is web based
@odd mason ESXi has web based management console as well
I think for newer versions, they discontinued older thick client based management tool... it is only web based now
oh, no! @light trout is back - I better run

how was the movie?
Boring
lol - what movie is that?
Anyone running owncloud on a Raspberry? Is it worth my time?

ah! ok - I will keep an eye on that movie
I know someone was running OwnCloud, but not on RPi
I think they are running on UnRaid
It's probably doable as long as you map inn an external storage source
Yes, that is the plan.

OMG!!!! I don't blame you - with GoT, either you love it, or you don't! ๐
Tried reading the books, abandoned the first one, never cared enough to watch the TV series
they made books too? ๐
they started with books first, and then the TV series came later
ah books first, that make more sense ๐
Except when it's the other way around. There's been more than a few that have gone that way
GoT is both. The books started first, but the show has passed them up now
That's because the author grinds slowly
@last plaza nice didn't know that
@last plaza VMware tried to retire the c# client since 6.0 but users are stubborn and the webclient was shite in flash, 6.7u1 is the first proper webclient with HTML5 , and it's super snappy, but since 6.5u1 the features in the web client were better than the c# client, and yeah the c# client no longer works in 6.7
You can still use player to connect to it?
@odd mason I haven't seen a single customer run proxmox though, even for testing
@light trout VMware player to connect to esxi?
yeah
yes, the c# client no longer supported for versions above 6.5
@light trout never seen that happen
Hmm... sice you work with this there is a good chance I'm mixing something xD
@light trout only guy in the whole country who works with virtualization for my company ๐ or rather ๐ญ ๐ญ ๐ญ
Stop automating your tasks, and hire one more ๐
The swarm and home assistant is running on two seperate devices
@light trout I wish, three week wait time in my calender ๐ญ
I see that now @dusk mason ๐
I believe it is because on cloudflare my home IP is routed to traefik which homeassistant is clashing with it since its the same IP?
At least you will have a job for a loong time @clear ferry ๐
it could be @dusk mason I tried running trรฆfik, but it was too complicated for my setup, NGINX give me enough ๐
any idea if theres anything on hassio which could stop that?\
nope (I don't know, but there are other here with more knowledge then me) ๐
@clear ferry i think vmware and hyper-v are so embedded into the enterprise ecosystems that it'll be difficult to get proxmox to get a foothold
but i've read a lot about it on /r/homelabs and people seem to like it
i figured it's worth trying out instead of worrying about licenses with vmware
@odd mason most homelab people I know run xen or kvm though
@light trout well, I am the only one who is working with 11 products, so I need to nag my manager for money next week ๐ค
@odd mason : running VirtualBox with a few servers (managed by phpVirtualBox)... I used proxmox ...but wanted my main server to be able to run docker too .. so changed the whole setup so I could run docker and virtualbox
@slim ore couldn't you run docker on a VM in proxmox? That would be no problem with nested virtualization on esxi afaik
Why do people keep praising ESXi? I read almost nothing positive about it and a lot of negatives.
@lyric pollen because people enjoy uptime, not half good stuff pretending to be featurefull
Same reason we like to be home, it's familiar ๐คท
if it's good enough for all the companies i have worked for, it's good enough for me ๐
@slim ore i run a second esxi instance inside my esxi environment, and run hyperv on a VM in there too, haven't tried with docker, but will give it a go this week
I've heard the licensing is a mess.
@clear ferry : well I used that same host to expose some disk in my home setup .... and I found it easier to setup the Debian host with virtualbox and docker (less overhead)
@lyric pollen you get what you pay for, they removed the middle licence though, which was a bummer, so now it is all or some features
*disks
For most people I belive the free version is capable enough
Since I'm not going to spring for a VM license, what do you miss out on using ESXi when you have only the free license?
@slim ore wouldn't be a problem to present volumes from the esxi host either, either passthrough the local drives or just the volume front-end
Yeah, was more comfortable with Debian ๐
@lyric pollen for most users? Probably nothing imo, I do need enterprise plus for my graphic card accelerated VMS and vmotion been hosts and storage
whats the advantage of GPS logger?
Instead of ?
owntracks
Once upon a time, OwnTracks didn't support Android any more
I am tempted to use gps logger to get rid of the headache of managing owntracks
GPS Logger just works for me
Yeah, and it being over HTTP makes SSL easier
OwnTracks also has an HTTP mode
You can do https with owntracks
Both are supported by Webhooks these days
Is there a way to change the device id after it's added from the gpslogger webhook? Or are you stuck with the generated entity_id?
Oh i have mannaged to fix my tradfri issue, someone pointed me to the github issue that contains a fix as a custom component
anyone built python 3.7.2 from source on debian?
I would recompile these for stretch . https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=python3.7
@dry cairn i wanna know your opinions on recent things
if i tell you in ha discord i be outta here faster then a filipino hooker after dollar night
i don t need that printed anywhere
ya'll gonna find out soon enough
don't tease us like that @dry cairn
xD
what's there to be apprehensive about?
Just a shout out to the HA Devs
For making a framework/system that lets you get stuff done so quickly without reinventing the wheel
๐๐ป
It's a refreshing change from the typical hardcore linux community who think you're a filthy casual if you don't build arch by hand :D
@serene mortar beeing annoying is not a crime and it was a valid concern the dude had and agreeing with it is not a crime either (or against rules ) ๐
"you should never use scripts to install arch" - Linux Discord
So my SO threw a fit this morning...
she did not appreciate my attempts at creating a wake up light
@hushed basalt remember doing Gentoo stage 1, took me three days to do the install, and I only had that one computer while doing university
@thorn viper ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
I've now put Thomas's lock-entity-row on the enable boolean :P
@thorn viper atleast your work ๐
@dry cairn, I spent a few minutes going through that conversation and I agree with both of you guys, one of the reasons for me to use HA is privacy and collecting information about your system by default seems to go against their own policy.
hello world i'm from Portugal and new here, hope to learn the most from you i heard you where the best
@clever mortar is the best
I have access to Google, that makes it easy to fake knowledge ๐
@vast dove I'm afraid next time I travel to the UK that if I say something wrong @clever mortar will walk up behind me and tell me to read the docs ๐ซ
Well, duh ๐
haha ๐
Just like the plans for the bypass were in the basement (HHGTTG), the answer is somewhere in the docs
That you require an expedition to find the answer... ๐คท
๐
@pure vine what was your trรฅdfri issue?
Don't know if I want to buy that cottage in Somerset anymore if @clever mortar will haunt me ๐ญ
I imagine @clever mortar in real life is a real shy guy that wont do you any harm :D:D
In the UK, the problem is finding a cottage that isn't haunted ๐
Trรฅdfri is a swedish product, it works as expected.
funkar, funkar inte, funkar, funkar inte ๐คท
@vast dove There's no evidence at all that I've ever harmed anybody ๐
tinkerer is actually a reformed hooligan
Nope, there's no freshly dug ground over there...
You are ALL wrong!
@clever mortar is not a person, but a highly sophisticated bot net ๐ค
@light trout hehe, i recently purchased my trรฅdfri devices, and it has indeed acted up a bit already...
We're really working on the infinite monkey approach, but with bots @light trout
Powered by Runet ?
It scales fine on the Internet these days ๐
Skynet
What was that movie about some guy bringing home a AI project from work. The machine had a female voice and was mostly doing home automation until it threw a fit trying to stab its master with a kitchen knife
wasn't a cyborg or anything, but it had an arm attached to a rail in the ceiling... lol!
@clear ferry you can install Gentoo in one command
It just has a lottttt of && in it
i don't remember exactly when i saw it... it's probably from the 80s
@hushed basalt took over 24 hours to just compile the stuff back then ๐ญ was in 2003
btw, thanks whoever mentioned gpslogger. i've been reluctant using gps thingies since i don't want my location tracked in the cloud, but this thing looks like it can throw the info straight into HA via http
@clever mortar i'm wondering why you aren't experiencing problems with the device tracker, but I am (and people on the forums and github). Does the 'scanner' attribute on your nmap scanned device_trackers say 'NmapSomething', or is it empty?
because, i realise that one difference is that you also use gps while i don't... i'm wondering if that 'masks' a possible bug
mm
I don't merge the trackers though
I have three device trackers per device - one GPS, one WiFi, one Bluetooth
Hm, I see
when my nmap device_trackers get stuck being 'home', the scanner attribute is empty
other people seem to be having the same problem... but i found a forum thread where people had the same problem with the unifi device tracker
Sounds like a bug with restore state
so i'm guessing it could be a more 'general' problem, with all trackers
Try using homeassistant.update_entity service to "force" it
@light trout seems to be introduced in 0.84, according to https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues/19998
Home Assistant release with the issue: 0.84+ Last working Home Assistant release (if known): 0.83 Operating environment (Hass.io/Docker/Windows/etc.): Hass.io Component/platform: Nmap device tracke...
I'm still on 0.84.6 though, haven't had a decent opportunity to upgrade further
hm
@clever mortar Run upgrade cmd, close your eyes, come here and complain after because you forgot to check breaking changes ๐
That seems to be the default ๐
@clever mortar https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/pull/19133 should be in 0.84.6 i guess, so you should be experiencing this problem ๐
I'm going to write a CGI script for NGINX to translate the existing GET to a POST so I can decouple the HA upgrade from touching the phones
@thorn viper The Pi is scared of me ๐
0.84 added the improved state restore, so my assumtion may be correct
Yeah, I suspect the actual problem is an interaction of things
I really need to replace my G7 server soon, someone should throw out a Gen8 or Gen9 soon, 192GB RAM just ain't cutting it no more
@light trout go fix, i'll buy you coffee! \o/
@light trout please elaborate
3: Profit
4: automate
๐
Automations are essentially "workarounds" so you can enhance and/or make your live easier /enabling you to be more lazy)
well, right now they're all showing correct states :p
more productive*
Not in my experience, the time I have used on this are WAY more then what i would have used doing things manually xD
its an investment into future
imagine all the time you'll save not walking to the switch
I have the exact same experience, but it's fun so
future of breaking changes, making me invest more time @proven spruce ? ๐คฃ
man, why you have to ruin everything
just yesterday i spend an hour figuring out why mariadb isn't connecting after finally discovering the docker image changed its default setting to only allow localhost
And I also use my switches :P
I have not 1 active automation (or HA instance running) ๐
that's bizzarre
Not really, there's more than a few folks here who don't make much use of HA, including some of the developers
you don't run HA? ๐
no?
developers are weird
@light trout runs OpenHAB!
what are you doing here then? ๐
I have multiple I can start if I need to test something ๐
no wonder they do so many breaking changes, its doesnt affect them
to be fair, the amout of breaking changes could be a lot more, usually they are caught during PR review, and if possible removed
@light trout give me a colour, I'll choose PINK, you can call the new class "Outcast"
๐
I don't think I have that kind of power
But you have the high ground @light trout !
There'd be less breaking changes with a test plan, and actual testers ๐
@clear ferry I'm on Linux mint. Made the jump from windows 10 to pure linux a few months ago
how's that working out for you
Great, mint has some gotchas thougu
@hushed basalt I ran linux from 99-2005 as my primary desktop, but since then I only run one of my work laptops with linux
linux as a desktop... shudder
I'm considering jumping ship to either vanilla Ubuntu or opensuse TW
@proven spruce no candy crush installed by default, so there's that
I ran Linux as a desktop for years, for web browsing, email, and office use it's fine
Blakadder, I think you might be triggering a lot of people
Heck, with the right setup folks may not even realise it's not Windows ๐
Only things keeping me on OS X are Pro Tools for audio recording and Final Cut for video editing
@clever mortar I had a 11" ultrabook at work a few years ago, I could get 2 hours battery life out of with the corporate windows image, installed linux got 8 hours ๐
i also ran linux as a desktop for a few years
Untill game devs start fokusing on linux I'm stuck with MS :/
Yeah, I'm Windows on my primary laptop, because of various pieces of software
@light trout WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, QUAKE 3 RUNS NATIVLY!
Well..
It's not 2003 anymore ๐คท
whatchatalkinbout dosbox works fine
@light trout wait what, shit, why did I fix that windows 2003 server for a customer last week then ?
oh right, customers suck
you didnt fix that server, its just working a bit better
I get 10 hours with Windows on my laptop. Does this mean I would get 40 on Linux? ๐ค
4
ll maybe also change to linux.
Especialy after Steam has his beta linux feature
but at the moment I run a windows LTSB (2016) version - wich is just nice
if valve do it right this time that can be a valid option ๐
not holding by breath on those points ๐
I just need Warframe running xD
I need division ๐
two games i thought noone plays
i'm happy i never got into gaming. seems to complicate life :p
Meh, i stopped playing on my desktop almost 10 years ago, I do PS4 when I have time between all the overtime and the new boss in the house ๐
Whats all these fancy games you guys talk about? Isnt Minesweeper good enough any more?
all i play is Atlas Reactor and XCOM
@vast dove Heart in Netwok!
Or whatever it was called
I remember playing with strangers at my dads workplace in the early 90s
@proven spruce Hopefully you mean Xcom: Enemy Unknown and Terror From The Deep!
That just sounds weird ๐
@vast dove No candy was exchanged!
@clear ferry actuall XCOM Long War ๐
@proven spruce zzzz TFTD 4 lyfe
@clear ferry i never played old XCOM cause i played Jagged Aliiance too much
just dont try the new version... nothing alike
commandos
YES
that was more of a puzzle game
indeed
and commandos 2 was frustratingly difficult
old games built patience and character
I still remember soldering a LPT-cable I think it was to play Doom Head to head, since it sucked over dialup ๐
The rockets never hit when we played on dialup
we were hauling computers and 15" monitors across town to a friends house to have weekend doom lan sessions
I started hosting lan parties for people back in 1997, I remember buying a few used hubs and sending out flyers, think I got 40-50 people to the first one
not everybody had network cards though
๐
oh right we didn't always have intergrated ones at that time
and used hubs and not switches
I think the integrated ones didn't pop up until 2004ish ?
I had, until recently, an ISA 3COM NIC in a drawer
shees, nothing was integrated, you even had to have an io card
Those were the days.
I probably have some network card in a box as well somewhere
@clever mortar I still have a few 509 and 905s lying around
That was a fancy one, with a 10BaseT connector
not an ISA one though ๐
i definitely do not miss the coax network cables
The cables were fine... the termination... ๐ฑ
Anyone remember attaching 20 MB hard-drives with SCSI?
Uh huh
@clever mortar or the guy who owned one of the terminators had to leave
I remember replacing a stack of 5.25" full height hard drives, with a single 3.5" half height drive
haha, don't mention that
@clever mortar Full height 5.25, don't remember owning any of those, but I had the WD Bigfoot which was slimline 5.25 :p
That was work's problem thankfully
Demn you guys are old xD
experienced*
Computer class at school and the 115V/230V switch at the back of the PSUs has stuck in my mind as well
@light trout Heck, I'm only born in 1984, what are you ? BARELY LEGAL ? ๐
I've toasted a few 110V power supplys
240V into 110V supply really does let the magic smoke out
Anyway, old is when you've used 8" floppy disks...
91 @clear ferry ๐
Oh, crap, yeah
๐
90s kids don't remember the time without the internet
they don't know the pain of tuning your cassette reader with a tiny screwdriver to load a game
I don't miss those days
the dark times, when you never knew anything
@clever mortar I miss the days when not just anyone could be a "system admin" jeeeze all the stupid people I have to help with basic stuff
That's why I'm no longer an admin, I got out before I defenestrated somebody
no internet nor mobile phones, ewww
Thankfully I get a lot of alone time in the datacenters, but sometimes I just go "wait, you manage a system for 500 users, that turns a profit of 500.000 every day, but you don't understand how to upgrade firmware of a server?"
@clever mortar what do you do?
I have to come out at 0400 in the morning because you didn't understand how to download and run a .exe file ?
Oh my god. Why did it even HAVE that screw? If they just set all of them to the same speed there wouldn't be a problem!
Consultancy @thorn viper
A wide range of IT flavoured stuff
Mostly on the design/architecture side of things, but also bits of anything
Ah
I'm a jack of many trades, courtesy of a varied past ๐
๐
@clear ferry , I was also born in 1984...
@clever mortar I'm jack of all trades, master of none ๐
I definitely don't feel old...
for me, IT has just been a hobby, with the exemption of a year or two where i did some programming, but that was almost 15 years ago
Great for you guys! I have to find time between appointments to work on my hobbies.
It helps that I love learning new things, so while I've been working with computers for some 3 decades, it never gets old
@clever mortar is so old he was the teacher of Ada Lovelace
๐
i found myself sitting in the same chair a bit too long every day, so i decided to change careers ๐
I hide some times so I can read technology related stuff without people bugging me.
@thorn viper I love having a new chair every day ๐
hehe
I get three or four interesting job offers every year, but I'm just too comfortable still
Aaah.. just tryed to read up on linux gaming on https://www.pcgamer.com/how-to-play-windows-games-in-linux/
But this adblock interference is going on my nerfes.
Welp.. Heard of outline? https://www.outline.com
nice thing when there is a site wich is bugging you - you can make a shortcut to outline a site
javascript:(location.assign("https://www.outline.com/" + location.href));```
@thorn viper It was timing out, im using a custom component that makes pytradfri reconnect when the states become instable
@pure vine interesting. Url?
@thorn viper heres the full issue https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues/14386 and the repo with the fix https://github.com/alex3305/hass-components-debug

I enjoy creating documentation of my installtions
but I hate doing training workshops
@hushed basalt I need to look into that and chef in time, when I have some free time, probably 2020 :p
Plus configure a rpi baby monitor
All I want is something that will stream from the RPi camera to a phone, vlc or whatever. And I've tried like four or five different methods. And it's just sketchy
Ansible is fun. It's quite verbose though to write
I do enjoy verbosity
2019 I'm learning Powershell and HA :p
And hopefully I will be going to vmworld, and hopefully US-side this year
I use ansible for everything. it's great.
- name: Install vim
apt:
name: vim
state: present
update_cache: yes
cache_valid_time: 3600
A typical play in ansible
doesn't seem to bad @hushed basalt
It's not awful
I also need to learn RESTful, because a lot of the company products have started using it
There's pros ands cons to having to declare what each variable type is
Sometimes you wish you could just go
Apt("vim", True, update_cache=True, cache_valid_time=True)
@hushed basalt I actually prefer the first one, makes it clearer to me after what I actually did
bad thing about 50% paternity leave is that the days I actually work in a months is filled up the month ahead with customer requests :p
so right now I'm fully booked until the first week of march
We get full pay in norway though, which is good
I don't get anything though except two weeks minimum wage from the government
Since my wife is studying I get all 40 weeks of leave
She gets 3 months full pay equivalent from her work
And 16 weeks minimum wage from gov.
I'm probably never going to understand other systems than the scandi ones
I think the swedes are the same as us @low harness @thorn viper
At least we're not American :D
I'm pretty sure they would have to request day leave to give birth
@hushed basalt yeah, they get 2 days and then GET BACK TO WORK?!
๐
I got 21 days from my employer free to use before and after birth, then I got the 40 weeks from the state
Jealous
Yeah, talking with US colleagues who's mind is blown that we get 6 weeks of holidays, plus public holidays - and we take them
I have to go back to work next week
We get 4 weeks leave plus public holidays in Australia
We need more
some people claim thats why we have such a big open source software scene, too much free time ๐
@hushed basalt Oh, and I have 25 days every year of paid vacation ๐
4 weeks paid vacation is the mandatory minimum here
I never end up spending it though, so I've transferred 20 days almost every year the last 11 years, so this year I have 60 days or something to use
on top of all the leave I get from my overtime, I think I had 170 hours leave last year
@clever mortar I've threatened with that ๐
Had a friend who managed 6 months, between holiday carried over, and flexi-time credit
Three months was just a little too long, going back to work was hard
Including the WFT am I doing sensation that lasted for weeks, while I got back into the routines
I've never done more than 3 weeks in a stretch
I run on the walls
@hushed basalt do you have to PAY to give birth in australia ? I heard something about Americans being "told to do cecearian" because the hospital gets to charge them more that way ๐
Swedish system for parental leave is awesome. I've been home for 8 months with both my kids, and now I'm home every monday until summer.
@clear ferry people who choose private health have to pay their gap between their insurances payment
And there is a huge problem of private hospitals pushing caesarian
Like ~55+% of births at one hospital near me
I think the norwegian number is less than 5% of all births
I think Americans are pretty big on pushing c sections as well
WHO recommends around 20%
I had to pay $15 when my first child was born. That covered the food I ate while we stayed at the hospital. The food for my wife was free.
Yeah I think I paid about $15 for a sandwich and coffee
And we bought a TENS machine for $100
I paid $30 for a room for 5 days, that was the total cost of the birth
Each reusable nappy we bought cost more than giving birth
My brother went with them. They lasted less than a month before giving up and going with disposables
We are only 10 days in
I don't mind it but she's only on breast milk atm
We just soak them in water until we throw them in the washing machine.
We've spent too much money on them to give up :D
Lol
The ones we bought have months long waiting lists
We could potentially sell them for more than what we paid
@low harness I just drive to sweden and buy regular diapers, pay less than 2NOK (0.23USD, 0.17GBP, 0.32AUD) per nappy
roughly half price of norway
@hushed basalt Just take your speedboat on the barbie!
Or some other bad reference
GDAY
All our real slang is just swear words
If someone isn't swearing it means they don't like you
Sounds the same as where I am from (Northern Norway), every adjective is a swearword, and usually we refer to our best mates as "#"%#"& &"#ยค#"ยค%"# "#ยค&"#" (censored for all the minors in here)
looking at you @light trout
๐
I've been curious. Is inhaling an actual word in northern Norway, as it is in northern Sweden?
@clear ferry ||Du vil ikke vรฆre sรฅ vรฆnnlig รฅ hente tellfart og sykle vannrรฆtt inn i hรฆlvette||
@low harness i am quite rare in Oslo as I keep my northern style of taking to people, which either makes them laugh a lot, or feel uncomfortable ๐จ
or both? ๐
@light trout laughing uncomfortably, the best kind
But really. Is it? In northern Sweden a sharp intake of air means (roughly) "yes".
@low harness you mean like in Gothenburg?
They make that inward whistle for yes there
Wouldn't say Gothenburg... far more north. I probably never heard it natively south of Sundsvall - which is about as far north as Trondheim, I think.
We don't make any sounds like that where I am from though, we do sigh a lot though, to make the whole room aware that we are fed up with bullshit
I've only heard Gothenburg people make that sound, worked with four of them, and they all whistled inward to indicate yes
Tfw this discord is full of scandi ppl
yup
cause all the french ones use domoticz
@proven spruce and the Chinese are too busy analysing our sensor data
Lol
@proven spruce funny that Hass would be spelled Ass in France I think, maybe that is why ๐คท
there's ass in the english name already so i dont see the issue
Domoticz is c++
I'm a python user myself
You can leave your curly braces and semicolons at the door thank you very much
so you dont get bored
haha good joke
I don't think I have had a singe thing break in the last 10 versions (or so) ๐คท
in 87 McLighting broke
cause you dare to read the breaking changes
McLighting is not from/by Home Assistant ๐
Na i reinstalled my whole system
They broke McLighting by enforcing stricter rules for MQTT or so
voluptuous.error.MultipleInvalid: extra keys not allowed @ data['on_command_type']
Make sense, it should have been that way from the start IMO
what does that have to do with anything?
because i had home assistant only to control these lights through google assistant
I see, you know it can do more?
there is also 1000+ other components/platforms ๐
For what?
~80% of them are not dependant on HW ๐
except social media control or some toys
I don't need GPS tracking
I don't need Social Media
I would like to use presence detection in Wifi etc. but I don't know what to do with
There's your problem
You need to work out why first
Send you a notification about your commute 10 minutes before you're due to leave, but only if you're still home
Send you a notification about your commute home if delays become significant
I have a Synology so I'm used to updates breaking things
While simultaneously being three years behind in security updates for packages.
@eager crest if you didn't use discovery just comment out command on and it works.
@clever mortar I was shocked at my first month of google api usage, then I realized the refresh rate was in seconds, not minutes ๐ wait what, 18000 calls
๐คฃ
Being able to update entities on demand has dropped my API usage from "only just free" to "waaay below the charge point"
oh, can you do that for travel time ?
Yeah, as of around 0.85 I think - certainly in 0.86
set a high scan_interval then use homeassistant.update_entity to force it
I use a script, and an automation
could I perhaps even do a toggle by pressing the travel time itself ?
Trigger off the location updates, but wrap in some logic so that I don't blindly update all the time, but require a minimum time to have passed, and that depends on how far we are from home
Won't update at all if we're already home (there's a one off update that happens at that time)
I'll mark my calendar for may 2021
I know that feeling
What is the "proximity" defined in ? meters ?
Yes, in this case
The values are roughs, I'm still working on what makes the most sense
where went my ui
Well, you're asking in the channel that's for anything not HA related ๐
why
Maybe you should try asking in the right channel
๐ฆ
Which would be #frontend-archived
I just love imagining you coming home from work @clever mortar "Person2 I'm home, how was your day, is person3 with friends?" ๐
๐
Well, I'd rather avoid identifying details being posted for the world to see, so I replace key things with other things, mostly
@clever mortar it would be so much better if you and your household were supercomputer androids impersonating humans, but rubbish at coming up with names
I'll steal that for the next time somebody asks ๐
What do you mean Person1 is an odd name, that's how so many names are constructed. We see those all the time on forums
@clever mortar would be better if your entities were named "anonymous" "registered user" and "sign in to see more" ๐คฃ
@hushed basalt I should sign up for this Engineering Seminar - Red Hat Ansible and Ansible Tower - a Red Hat Series Eventย work pays ๐

@hushed basalt not for me... We usually get access to prerecorded seminars... Which is zzzzzzzzz

Hey guys, new here. Iโm looking for some testers for a Alexa wake on lan skill. Gave the rules a read but still not sure if Iโm allowed to post that, especially since I also have a discord for reporting problems or general help, and it might be considered advertising.
Any mod could give your opinion on this?
If it's a thing that could be used with Home Assistant, I don't see the issue with you posting some details about it
It's not like you'd be the only one
Itโs not related to HA, it doesnโt require extra devices.
Just came here looking for people into smart home automation to be honest.
Kinda the only discord related to that.
That's more off topic then, and in the grey area, but ...
i find that hard to believe tho
There's a number of subreddits about home automation, that would be worth posting on ๐
And there are many other Discord servers about automation
Iโve been there already haha
Then, I'd say you've done enough as far as advertising it to this community goes ๐
Gotcha. Thanks for your time ^^
@clear ferry but yes I learnt ansible just by doing
Forcing myself to use it for everything
I don't know much about the more advanced stuff though. The seminar sounds cool
@hushed basalt we have integration in our platforms for chef and ansible, that is why I want to learn it, customer value, more pay for me ๐คค
Nice, Open Reach have upped their FTTP speeds
I'm torn between wishing I lived somewhere that could get FTTP, and being glad I live somewhere quiet ๐
they used to only have 330mpbs, but have recently upped it to a gigabit
I get FTTC, at about half the nominal speed of the service...
is there something like a script to sync all light colors in a group
You have all the necessary tools to make that happen
tell me how
Read the docs on a light group. It turns it into a simple service call
@clever mortar I live between four big farms, but I can still get synchronous gigabit ๐คฃ
@eager crest Please, read the channel topics and post in the right channel
shakes fist at @clear ferry and curses him repeatedly
@clever mortar move to Norway, 90% broadband coverage, think the fiber is only 50% though
It's tempting, even if you do get it a bit dark in the north ๐
The time when it's dark is way better then the times when it's daylight all day...
Very true
Famers tend to get Mobile providers using their land for transmitters and i assume they sometimes get a fiber line through, so gigabit there is not to out there
have 1G synchronous here in the US but all of our providers are evil
and places that have it are still pretty un-common
When we have a system that not only legalizes being evil, but encourages it, it's kinda hard to blame them.
the uk system is just like "Hey, your coverage has a monopoly, share it" Virtural operators are very common here and a lot of ISP are using BT's infrastucture(Its now Open Reach only, Retail and Infra got split by the regulator ofcom)
OpenReach's reach sucks ๐
true, they suck less now they are no longer at the whim of BT Retail
I think the main reason ofcom wanted the split was becuse BT retail was using most of the money Open Reach brought in
"BT Group's acquisition of mobile phone operator EE, which received regulatory approval in October 2015, was partly funded using ยฃ1.7bn of Openreachโs revenues." they did stuff like this to the money from Open Reach
I mean since the split they have acctualy improved infrastructure in citys
Well, yeah
compared to the rest of the world having VDSL as the highest in major citys was a bit embarrising for the UK
Yeah
Shame you dont live in wales, Internet is getting weird there, Fiber in villages
The estate I lived in was bypassed for anything but DSL until very recently. They rolled out FTTC, with surrounding areas getting FTTP, and gave us enough coverage that only half the houses can get FTTC
@pure vine we got fiber optics in my hometown in the North (Tromsรธ) in 2003
If you're late to the party, you get DSL, at 2 Mb/s if you're lucky
mainly becuse the welsh goverment is strong arming BT into being better in wales
they mannaged to do it to EE to, traving through the Valleys to aberywth has 4g up until the winding roads
I lived in Dublin in 2007, the best we could get 10 minutes from city centre was wireless 2mbit, which died when it rains
here is a map from ofcom
B
A few years back the coverage in rual areas was awful, but now its good ennough to watch someone on twitch all the way or a movie
My mobile provider doesnt have the long range frequencys so i get drop outs, but my pairent provider does and they have signal the whole way
@clear ferry ie 80% of the time ๐
?rank other
That role no longer exists.
So what do you guys use for listening to music?
