@rancid lance Windows would probably be the first preference i guess.. but I have worked in linux before so don't mind it .. I have 1 media pc at home which i will use for now.
kewl check out the python env guide in the docs then
Seen some screenshots before where somebody controls all Televisions in their home with a linux server box... which then also allows them to split the screen on the tvs to show the front door camera when somebody rings the doorbell
*split screen
im a linux user
got one windows machine for music production
but other then that its all linux
nice.
and you know how to basically play all video to all tvs in the house using a linux multimedia server?
depends on which media server that it is
havent played around with any of those
but you got this cool distro
that ive been looking at
@neon crow I think the easiest way to do that would likely be with IPTV.
kodi perhaps
then creating a playlist (,m3u) and getting the simple iptv addon
that could work
Ok cool, i will start with baby steps 😃
Actually, you know what...I am thinking Apple TV, Roku, Plex, Kodi, or Chromecast could likely do all of these.
yeah but its nice to have em in a list and saved
RTSP would work.
I can use google on the phone to create custom assistant commands and install Home Assistant and see If i can get google to call some script there then
@neon crow Sounds like you've already figured out your next step 😃
@peak cloud yeah.. Google Home mini is on sale here (australia) ... which is why I am asking google vs alexa as i might just buy a few to scatter around the house
@neon crow All we ask of you is that you please read the documentation. We spend too much time helping people with issues that they could have easily figured out by reading a simple paragraph on the component page. (I hope this does not come off as offensive. Hell, I'm guilty of not reading the docs once in a while myself, lol)
@peak cloud yeah, no problem, I just jammed alot of questions/requirements into welcome message to just see if anybody else was in similar situation and could offer advise
@neon crow Dude, your welcome message was the best I've seen in...2 years?
need like an #introductions channel to post your intro into 😃
well its kinda this the lounge 😛
@neon crow I just realized I didn't finish answering your questions.
or as i like to call it my beer place 😛
this is the random chat thats not specific to any of the other channels
✅ Security Cameras in and around the house
✅ Multisensors in each room to measure things like temps, humidity, lights and movement
✅ Window & Door sensors
✅ Controlling the audio from ceiling speakers
✅ Controlling multiple TVs (with voice and also dash buttons)
✅ Controlling lights
✅ Create custom screen in the HUB that can run my own code.
I mean, 7 out of 7 ain't bad at all!!
Hey @rancid lance...you wanna show him a couple of your custom "screens?" 😃
(Untappd, for example...)
Why? Did you complete the list?
thats is a card ive been working on now with custom elements for lovelace
its all filled with dynamic info that changes and animated icons that changes based on various states
there are also more examples on
.sharethelove
A place for LoveLace Config https://sharethelove.io/
Awesome Home Assistant - A curated list of amazingly awesome Home Assistant resources. https://www.awesome-ha.com/
two good bookmarks for homeassistant
@neon crow Check out these custom screens that you can make!
These are all easily possible thanks to the amazing Lovelace UI. https://www.home-assistant.io/lovelace/
there are more example on share the love recomend that you use the lovelace ui
sooo lovely to work in
is an awesome floorplan
the only floorplan that im remotely interested in
and then we got the untappd card that im gonna rework
so there is alot of stuff you can do 😄
I think we scared him off >_<
Finally found some hardware that might suit my needs! The "Shelly 4 Pro" !
4x 10A with power metering for each channel
ahh the din thingy
Yep! I think that might actually be what I need, though 13 og 16A would have been better
Awesome .. had to quickly catch up on all the messages 😃 thanks @rancid lance & @peak cloud
np 😃
@neon crow I am in Australia as well and just returned 3 echos and bought 3 google home
@neon crow For some reason echo's have geo locked "skills" and most are not over here yet. Also features like more then one user is not available. Google home was easy to setup and knows the voice of me and my wife and works with tts aaaand no geo locked content
@neon crow and google home home as more features available to it with home assistant then echo
@tiny mesa You should have made a us account. The only annoying part is asking it for the weather. You have to specify the location just asking what is the weather will give some random US city
still no ecobee support
Honesty from using both I prefer the Google home
and I should not have to make it an American account...
@peak cloud What do you use as source for your ceiling speakers?
Also is your Multisensors based on the DIYSensors, like the one Ben from BruhAutomation built?
@zenith egret I do not have ceiling speakers, but if I were to build another system, I would likely go with Chromecast Audios and some decent 20W-50W amps from Amazon.
As for multisensors, no, I used Z-Wave Aeotec MultiSensor 6.
And also the Philips Hue Motion. Oh, and SmartThings MultiSensor.
And I guess Xiaomi motion sensor. Hahaha
Presently I have a mixture of Google Home/mini and RPis simulation airplay speakers with LMS to tie it together. Just curious if there is a "neater" option
LMS?
I still have to jump on the z-wave band wagon, but not sure which gateway is most compatible etc etc..
There is a neater option, but it’ll cost you an arm and a leg: Sonos.
Logitech Media Server aka Squeezebox
Sonos is nice, but waaaaaaaaaaay out of my price bracket
If there was a way to use Google cast groups without discovery, Google cast would be super ideal for multi-zoned audio.
Haha, exactly.
HA picked up the group I created with GH
why not use discovery?
Only draw back was the player that initiated the grouping was replaced with the group - so if I only want to play music on that speaker again I have to delete the group
HA did discover the GH speaker group
did you give it the same name as one of your speakers or something? For me it kept all the speakers and added the group
I called it "everywhere", and the other speaker are kitchen, living_room etc
and one of the speakers disappeared? Weird
I called mine ambient and it worked fine
I'm using the old "media_player: - platform: cast" still though as I couldn't get the new one to work
Yip, might possibly be the way I did it - Still new to the GH evironment
Same platform added aswell - Did not know there was a new one
logs say something like this: [homeassistant.components.media_player.cast] Setting configuration for Cast via platform is deprecated. Configure via Cast component instead.
that one popped up when I seaeched
so there's a new way of doing it but it found nothing for me
@orchid rose Discovery is going away in the future, based on my understanding. I am not sure if it will be replaced by something else or not, but currently that is the only way to use cast groups.
interesting
Maybe the new cast component solves that!
@peak cloud - That will be a big bummer to loose the discovery of media players
I haven’t had a look.
I’m not entirely sure if it’s actually going away as in losing functionality, or if it is being refactored into a more optimized system.
discoveryio?
I hope it is the second option...
@dry cairn Too soon, too soon...😂😂
neva
ALWAYS!!!!
ultra
Mega?
i'm not sure the always brand carrys that
Haha, touchè.
well you can always get a cotton candy machine and sell those off as that 😛
@tiny mesa cool, yeah good guys had the google minis tonight for $42 (AUD for anybody wondering)
nice deal i think I paid $55 at jb
💤
anyone watching the dji event?
Hey gang... anyone have time for a really stupid question? LOL
just ask
can somebody explain what kodi is and what i could use it for
lool
wtf
dude google
i know your 14 years old
but we are not your google assistant
And I feel bad even asking considering I've found a ton of threads on this but there is a disconnect somewhere for me apparently. Slapped my first install on a 3B+ last night want to assign a device level static IP to ETH0 which on every other distro of linux I can do in about two seconds this seems different. The resin-sample file isnt visible via SSH or configurator is it?
yup
hahahahaha sonofabitch I'm sorry pre coffee 😃
haha no worries
ive read on kodi's website but i cant understand what is so good about it
Thanks @rancid lance 😃
np @signal sail
but who have movies on thier own computers dont we just watch netflix or viaplay
wow that statement is alot to take in
well pre your time there wasnt netflix or viaplay
there was the internet
so people wanted movies to watch so they downloaded it
or ripped from their dvd copy etc
today we just shell out money to companies that has the moveis for us like the obdiant sheeps we are 😃
and kodi has netflix and viaplay support
in Kodi 18
still a damn good media center
i should know i used to help out on development
its like EA Orgin pass
do i need a server for kodi?
it sounds like a good idea
renting and getting all the game at once
but your security as a customer with buyers protection etc goes right out the window
and your at the mercy of the company and what they decide you should play or watch
👍
i dont understand but okay
you only need a raspberry pi
@rancid lance 👴 back in my day we didnt have any of them there new fangled digi-doos we watched VHS tapes and we LIKED it. be kind, please rewind 😛
vhs was terrible lol
aside from the fact it was super easy to make copies of tapes
10 minutes of loading time and 1 min of game time
xD
in sweden its perfectly fine to copy from a source you own
the only time i touch VHS tapes or DVDs now is to make a digital copy of them for my plex server
If it helps @jagged mantle I tried kodi and plex but i found in the end that I liked plex better.
so ripping dvds etc is legal
Not unless anyone finds out...
well just for my needs. I know that some people use kodi tts but I just want to have a main media server that I can use. I just have one tv.
kodi can do PiP and TTS kind of stuff can't it?
PiP is in development
I've never actually done much with it, but it would be great to get a little PiP popup of the front door camera if the doorbell rings\
they recently reworked the video core
I just do not like having to enable UpNp for kodi to be a media server
so they can do DRM services like netflix etc
or a "motion detected in toddler's room" notification if the toddler gets out of bed when she's supposed to be sleeping 😛
TTS at the same time as a source is playing is still a no but that might just get reworked in later versions
Version 18 has is kinda of a huge rebase
they actually slowed down their release cycle cause there are so much rewrites
plus its getting the best feature ever
Retroplayer
So there is a lot of stuff happening in the Kodi part of the world 😃
Do you have a server for kodi or does every device have all the movies, music...
sql
2 device connected to it
running osmc as OS
thats the kodi distro i helped out on
bases of debian (rolling distro)
and running an sql on a nas that all the rest is stored on isnt a big hassle
but for many users plex works outta the box and thats why they think its better
then putting in some effort
what about live tv dvr?
about 15 or 20 clients avaiable i think
Hi guys
Hey
I was just hacking on my HASS and it's really funny what you can do. Actually more than I expected
yeah alot of cool thing you can do with it
I'm curently getting my briefing to tts.
that's so funny with all of the errors happening
@rancid lance what skin do you use on Kodi?
Omni
v17?
nice! i usually wait a couple days after stable is released before i update lol
I kinda like arctic zephyr, but haven't tried many yet since I moved from MediaPortal
im still on whatever is default for krypton lol
want a skin that will actually show HDR and Atmos flags etc.. though
the default ui for krypton isnt bad
Omni does
or you can download a pack that does under settings
oh an extension to current theme?
its all seperate to work on any skins these days
hmm
I should try Omni too then I guess. Lot of these just look awful on a big screen though
its under Look and feel in addons
so my lovelace ui is really looking awesome now 😛
Incorporated Neato into the aparment summary
i higly suggest getting another sound pack also @shy comet
has your neato been acting funky @rancid lance lately?
my robot was going crazy cleaning yesterday lol
lol
mine kept cleaning teh same spot for like 10 minutes
literally back and forth and maybe turn a lil
yeah thats happned to me too
its pretty wild how heavily dependent it is on the cloud
or vacuuuming a single spot for 10 min
theyve been having issues all week
it spent an hour cleaning something it takes 25 min normally
though there was something wrong then it just started to work again
and it even missed an entire room
haha
and drained 30% more battery
guess Neato are having issues
big time, if you check twitter you can see their responses
yea but usually u fix it in a day
i rarely get upset over outages
hmm whchi mod did you say will add it to the current skin?
just estuary mod or something?
installing it now lol
shouldnt it download all dependencies on its own?
naa those are optional 😛
but some of em should fucking be non optional cause they bring that extra to the skin 😄
yea was gonna say dont see the hdr or atmos flags lol
yea still dont see any additiional info that i wanted lol
ok estuary mod isnt bad actually....no actual HDR flag but at least atmos shows properly lol
After half a year of continuous sunshine the winter is coming. Anyone have any cool lighting ideas I should try?
going through aliexpress made me wonder if someone here has some recommendations
I scarffed up some Amazon dash buttons while they were on sale this week for a buck each. Now, what's the best Dash button integration? I'm using has.io on a pi3b+
good night -button?
I mean like dashio or something...
ah
can i run both hass and node red on a single rpi 2 model b
most likely, but it might start slowing down
is node red that heavy?
ive never used it but my pi3 was starting to slow down with a larger HA install, so the more you load up on a pi2 the more it will slow down
okay i think il skip node red as im using only a 2 amp power thing for my rpi
Hi Sorry to interrupt trying to install home Assistant on pi 3b+ so I’ve used etcher to write image to sd and powered up pi but it looks like it’s just hung on black screen with last line is udevd[10]: starting eudev-3.2.5 been this way for 30 - 40 mins.
Ethernet light flashing. Single red light on Pi
@young spruce You should take the time to read the channel topics 😉
If that's Hass.io you're flashing, ask in #330990055533576204, if it's Hassbian ask in #330944238910963714
If it's something else... what 😉
Hassio
Then ask in #330990055533576204
wow, from the HA forums: "Did you ever figure this out? All my lights are turning on at night. If I turn them off they will come back on. I cannot imagine someone is just turning on my lights. My system is pretty much public."
🤦
let me guess no api passowrd?
or password 😛
😛
some people are just too dumb
or welcome (default)
it should be a huge warning label if you cant tie your shoelaces then dont try this
i like the fact that they admit to their system being public, but don't think some random person would/could be messing with it
To be fair, if you can't tie your shoelaces, you probably can't install home assistant
ohh trust me Ludeeus there are idiots for everything
a persistent notification that cannot be dismissed would do it for them
just annoy them until tis done
@rancid lance @clever mortar did you time your comments? 😂
🤣
I spent years doing first line IT/helpdesk - 'nuf said
same
its almost like a right of passage lol wanna be good at computers? help some poor souls
help ?
do it for them?
Burn?
its more like stand "poor souls"
cause most of em are obnoxious pieces of shit
"i dont browse any website i dont know how that virus got there"
Oblivious and self centered would be more accurate 😉
that think they know so much so they need to call in and tell you how they would fix yet they demand that you help em
i will never forget the day we had to code around adware cuz of our users
deleting adware was not acceptable
it's ALIVE
update the kernel
its debian so its prolly the current one 😂
we just converted our daughters crib into a toddler bed last week. she's been on the floor every morning when we've gone to wake her up. finally stuck an ip cam in her room to see what she does while she's supposed to be sleeping. she got out of bed and my wife dropped in on the echo and started talking to her telling her to put her specific toys down and get back in bed. must have freaked her out because she hasn't gotten back out of bed since.
LOL
😂
hahah @amber bramble that's awesome. better parenting through technology
i kept poking my head in the door and telling her to go back to bed, and as soon as the door closed she got right back out
wife tells her to go to bed via alexa and she hasn't gotten out since lol
"damn ive been spotted"
'mommy really does have x-ray vision'
better then the baby opening a hidden wall like stewie
Can't change my name to 撒丁亚 🙄
@hollow geode, you joined Other.
For a server, no GUI ever
stretch good to go on it?
#newbieonlinux sorry guys
@rancid lance do you know the bob and tom song about you btw?
Your choice of Linux is fine - whether you want Debian based, or RedHat based, really depends on what you're doing with it. There are of course other flavours out there, but if you're new things like SUSE may throw you
"By the way, I'm running Arch"
<cough> Linux sucks, go BSD 😛
Actual BSD, or macOS?
BSD, real BSD - Net/Free/Open
nice
Depending on whether you're running on a toaster, a network appliance, or don't want to use your system's network 😛
I've only currently got FreeBSD running at home, for my home server, but I've had all of them running at various points
freenas ?
Nah, FreeBSD stock
ok
FreeNAS is fine, but I prefer getting closer to the metal - same reason I don't run Hass.io really
hehe i hear ya 😄
On the other hand, I've been running unix boxen since around 1990
only been running linux since 2004
My first Linux was the late 90's with a floppy based firewall/router distro
neat
although i wouldnt wanna run that today 😛
Back when dialup was the only option, and my telco had an "all you can eat" policy at a 1p a minute, capped at £10/month
I/O writes speed must be horrible 😛
So, I had a second line and kept it up 24/7, speeds may have been low, but downloads could run overnight 😄
I miss being able to tell the connection speed by the sounds it made
can i use node red to create my automations and then convert them to yaml, so i dont have to install node red on my rpi as it will probably slow down hass
ask in node red
@jagged mantle Please take the time to read the channel topics and ask where it's on topic
ive searched for that channel before but i must been tired sorry found it now
ok. Debian installed. play time 😄
full iso
looking for the next steps
think docker first
first need to update my source list
anyone here using Snips ?
i want to start using Snips, but my rasbPi is hanging in the basement.. wont be able to speak into the usb microphone..
is there a way to have remote microphone's ?
@paper rose Please don't go cross-posting
@clever mortar.. im sorry..
ok, source list sucks. trying to get transport-https to work but keeps saying unable to locate package
any toughts?
solved it
#didyoutryputtingitoffandonagain
@gusty relic I’ve just done a Debian/docker install... hassio in my case. Humming along pretty nicely now’
@eager trench did you use the CE version or engine?
@gusty relic might have more luck if you install that package
the https?
yeah
@gusty relic I used CE
@eager trench did you put portainer on top or something or just use command line?
I used command line to set everything up and then installed Portainer
Are you going Hassio or ??
Actually not even sure what engine version of docker is....
Lol
I just followed the docker docs
And the docker page on hassio down the bottom of the page
Then restored snapshots... i had already been running hassio in docker on a Pi. I did need to reinstall some addons and fix my port forwards but it was simple getting it running
@rancid lance & @light trout convinced me to go Debian as I had been planning on Ubuntu before chatting to them
Right.... and I wanted to use SABnzbd and sonarr and couch potato..... retired a couple of Pi’s lol!!
I got a nuc - low sped celeron one not an i3 or anything fancy, an ssd and 8gb ram and it’s running like a top
might do the same, got that on a nas at the moment
Like <8% cpu usage....
i got a udoo x86
Have you used docker before?
When you restore your snapshots, particularly if you use non-standard or community addons... you might need to add the repos and reinstall them again so make sure you still have access to the option settings
But I’ve never done anything so simple
first reinstall then delete
With San/sonarr/cp I screwed myself up a bit as I ended up with say sonarr not having access to the Sabnzb data partition because it had a different ‘name’ which was a mega PITA but the good thing is you can just delete the container and recreate it with different options
thats what i like about it
I didn’t bother with docker-compose.... just use command line to set them up
testing without going through long setups
And I spent a day or 3 originally setting up those on a pi with Raspbian but docker is a bloody DREAM
Unbelievable.
hehe
When I started up Sonarr in like 5 minutes and saw it had latest mono and everything I couldn’t believe it!!
u store your data on a nas?
Not having to say try and install something and then get a message about all the things you haven’t installed and need to and then rinse and repeat......
Yes on a Synology NAS
or fuck up your system
Synology!!!!!!!
ah same here
Yeah
press arrow up if you want to edit your entry 😉 or that
It’s not so easy on my iPad
I edit all the time on my PC
Impossible on ipad
And I always get screwed with auto-mangle
i'm dutch but speak a lot of english
but when i type autocorrect slays me from time to time
@eager trench Press anfd hold on message on iPad 😉
I ran dmesg and saw a few ‘red’ errors on my CIFS shares so screwed around a bit to make NFS work...
Thanks @light trout
Haha!! It worked
I was also wondering how to add reactions lol
I also installed watchtower to automatically keep containers up to date but I saw last night it failed on one so I might ditch it as it’s simple in Portainer to update
I did run into an issue earlier when I updated docker.... half the containers didn’t restart - home assistant ones..
Right... I’m inclined to ditch watchtower... it’s not saving much....
If I’m going to update docker should I stop home assistant first?
Like.... what should my procedure be?
#449717345808547842 are more suited for those kind of questions 😉
That is true, "docker just works" so there are not that may issues with it 😂
Yeah till it doesn’t
lol
dunno who asked for this and why that dev felt that it was nessary to create an electron app with windows 95
@eager trench do you have bluetooth setup in docker at all?
@dry cairn how
its not funny in here
where
what about windows 3.11?
I still have windows 3.1 full installer. It is less than 10mb - way less than a typical high resolution image 😉
LOL
lmao!
anyone got any good suggestions for a garage door automation?
Close the door 30 to 60 seconds after it opens, so you can trap people inside, or wreck your car 😛
I would think the german pronunciation of "Immensee" would be something like i' mun zee and not ee' mun zay. Anyone that can help?
ha!
i mean hardware to control the garage
everything ive read up seems meh
or has issues
There's various options that have been discussed in depth on the forum - OpenGarage seems to be fairly popular 🤷
I like my OpenGarage still
I have a google home notification for when it's been open for 5 min, and then another at 20 min which is followed by an automatic closing
im pretty new to hassio
should i give hassbian + homeassistant a try?
seems like you have more "control/access" with hassbia+ha
You are new to Home Assistant. Hassio is one option. Hassbian is another
Hassbian is going to be more of a traditional linux install
yup trying to move off Smart thigns
So yes, you can get your hands dirtier, so to speak, with Hassbian
Hassio is similar to a docker install
im okay with traditional linux stuff
but im feeling already overwhelmed with HA setup
(And a straight docker install of Home Assistant is yet another option)
lots to learn with HA + Node Red
You can put off the Node Red part for a while. Get comfortable with HA first
i got basic Zwave+zigbee working
i got devices connected atleast
okay ill give that a try
@trail crag I installed a second instance of home assistant in the UNraid server last night. Considering doing a Hassio instance next week. That way I have two testbeds and my production build stays intact.
Lol
@trail crag FYI, you can add as many Dockers as you like of the same platform as long as they each have a different IP address.
Br0 for networkthen select a new IP
oh yes, I am familiar with having too many IPs to juggle at this point. 😛
😂
3 VMs, the two unraid docker apps, and two pis...too much home assistant
I've discovered if I have cloud enabled/connected in one, I will get signed out of another, so I have to be careful with that
I only need cloud: for my production instance but when I restore snapshots I forget to disable it sometimes
I haven't needed that aspect of it yet so it remains untouched. Though that may be an issue if there are use cases for multiple instances.
Ah gotcha
I saw that #330990055533576204 was a shit storm yesterday evening. Lol
IT'S BEEN TEN MINUTES WHY WON'T ANYONE ANSWER MY QUESTIONS! 🤣
That's just the nature of some of our more impatient recent arrivals - those of the instant gratification persuasion
We'd another like that in #330944238910963714 earlier today
Lol my condolences.
🤷 - they just need some real life experience
I used to get those in my auto forum. I would explain that yes, someone will help you but we all have jobs that take priority over your pet project.
They usually patient after that
@clever mortar warm hands is all I'm hoping for right now. 😂 Yearly physical time.
Ah, I know the "fun"
👍
I think my 2 inch color display shows up today. @clever mortar going to attend to use it in conjunction with an esp32 board to act as a remote/media display for Plex music. Hopefully it works. If not I saw a hack for doing it with Spotify since their source code for the old version is open source now.
Guess I'll have to document it if it works.☺️👍
Hi all, maybe it is too late but I do not figure out how I can pass configuration parts to the chat without massing the massage completely up. What are the correct quotes required? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

i get to pull 7 new cat5 runs though the attic and walls tomorrow. i'm so excited 😓
why not pull some fiber since you in there to future proof it
it'll be a while before i have any use for fiber
most of these runs are for PoE cameras
picked up a couple new reolink domes and got the second gens 😄
yep
the second gen domes are nice
a lot better night vision
i got 16 of those atm on blue iris
I'll probably order 1 or 2 more pretty soon
after i get the cables run
hard to beat for $60
only bad thing is now I have a bullet and I'm not sure what to do with it lol
the reolink bullet 5mp?
the bullet version of the 1st gen domes
rlc-410 i think was the model
i bought 1 bullet and 1 dome originally to compare them
i got 2 of those 5mp bullets and the picture on those is worse then the 1st gen domes lol
but they do have optical zoom
yeah i decided i liked the domes better
better form factor for mounting under the eaves of the house
i had a heated discussion with their support about the gen 1 and 2 and they finally agreed to swap the gen 1 for the 2's
i wasn t too happy with the gen 1 night vision it looked like you in a alaska snow storm at night
i really want to put a camera on my mailbox post at license plate height so i can get a decent shot of every car coming up and down the street, but getting cable to it is going to be incredibly difficult
have to dig under part of my driveway and sidewalk to get it there
its raining lol
we got a lot of car breakins lately and the last time i caught em on video
they so moronic they actually walked up to the camera to make sure its really a camera
then they ran
too late buddy
and nobody notices the cams on the mailbox
@amber bramble I know how you feel about running those cables. I just ran 10 up to my attic for computers, cameras, etc. Good luck!
i put all fiber
I have no use for that just yet.
got me a bunch of 10 gig mellanox cards for the machines and off you g o
i was maxing out the 1 gig network so i had to move on
Try and convince my wife!
HAH
break the network so her netflix streams studder and there is your approval
honey we gotta upgrade
LOL. Use that "I don't care anymore, just do whatever you have too!" moment to your advantage!
Does anyone know of a media player for a desktop PC that can cast to chromecast devices? Tons of android apps can do this as well as hass but for some reason I can't seem to find a regular player that can do this...
vlc
anything that has a UI not from the 1980s?
so you asked for a mediaplayer that can do stuff
installing vlc now to try it out but it's pretty awful for actually playing any music locally
it wasn't shitting on the answer, just shitting on the software 😉
¯_(ツ)_/¯
it's a bit weird that most players don't seem to have this option...
looks pretty good. Still probably won't fix the lack of a library etc
the chromecast integration works well on vlc though it seems
gonna try out the library features etc. Maybe it's gotten better since I last tried it
the skyfire skin had a library
just saying but instead of bitching about how bad vlc is.. check it out before complaining?
anyways im off
looks like it's still pretty much the same or I just don't know how to use it. Works for playing a file or a folder but that's about it and I need more from a music player
@light trout are you kinda sad that tink would not allow our emotial support..... i think we would have been good at it
Yeah no doubt, but he is not wrong, 🍺 is good for that to 😛
right .... but we could added a extra layer of 😂 to the 🍻 and he wouldnt be drinking alone
You're all welcome to join me at the local, but I doubt it's very local for you 😛
✈ ticket?
Sure, but I'm only paying for you to travel cargo 😉
I wonder, will the new Auth system eventually allow devs of 3party plugins (configurator, web terminal) use of HA authentication system ?
@clever mortar as long as they give me some form of scuba
Hi fellas. Did any of your ran into an openwrt discord?
well i only got 3 of my 7 cable runs pulled. didn't have nearly as much cable as i thought
also to whoever invented blown-in insulation and decided to put it in my attic: I hate you.
@dry cairn have you updated the firmware on any of your gen2 reolinks?
the firmware on the site for the rlc-420 doesn't seem to work on the gen2?
would be great if the website specified that
im currently cursing the people that built my house and made it way more effort than i expected to get into the soffit outside to get to my cat5 cables
lol yup
i have siding that was so poorly installed it will blow off if you look at it wrong, but the soffit is nailed every 6 inches in a place where i can't reach a hammer without pulling the gutters off too
😂 quality american workmanship
1 down, 1 to go
then i need to order another camera and hire a small child to crawl through the attic to pull the cable for it. no way i'll fit down close enough in the attic to run it
can't seem to get 20FPS out of it at 4MP though :/
might be my blueiris box
prolly lol
and you should limit it to 10fps
more then enough
enable direct to disk writing too
oh and does your machine support intel quick sync?
not sure on quick sync
cpu is only around 50%, set up direct to disk
1080p gives me a solid 20 fps
20 is worthless
you wasting cpu cycles
10 is the perfect mix
and what is your video card
intel integrated gpu
which one
looks like intel hd 2500
set all the cams to 10 fps at max resolution
yeah that one dont do quick sync
drop all your cams to 10 fps max res and max bitrate
8192
doesn't seem to matter what framerate i set it to, max resultion is still dropping frames on my box :/
time to get a beefier machine
i7 and a modern intel iris video card
and at least 16gb
weird though because the cpu and gpu are less than 50%
watching it
?
it will be smooth and then pause for half a second
and the average FPS in the info dialog shows 3-5 frames per second lower than what its set at
i havent set recording up on it yet
you can t go by that bar
its a notorious liar
motion detection setup wrong could also cause frame studder
there 's all kinds of shit in bi that can cuase that
yeah i may go to the local university surplus store and get a new machine for $50
they have machines with haswell and newer i7's for $50
no way
soo.. here's a fun one.. I set up a pi with homeassistant... the person payed me like $20 to show them how to use it... they lost power because they either couldn't or wouldn't pay their power bill... now they want a refund because their HA isn't working... -_-
yeah its kind of hard for HA to work if you don't have power
ikr
now they want their $65 back because they payed me to get the pi, and cd card and set it up... I'm sitting here like "Ok, then I want my Pi and sd back" and they said no. so I said no refund.. you don't get my work for free because you screwed up.
lol
I mean, I'm willing to give them a refund... if they're willing to return the gear... I don't see that as unreasonable
anyway, enough of stupid people ramblings, how is everyone?
have you politely told em to fuck off ?
aka serious face and a fuck off moron?
they could also probably do with an ass whooping
talking about a whooping
The spokesperson said she couldn’t give “specifics” of the attack and did not know whether the hackers were criminals or part of a government.
🤔 is there a difference?
i think i figured out my problem
the camera that can't keep up with the framerate has Mirror and Flip options checked in the firmware
i put a second camera up in a different spot and it doesn't have any issues
nope, turned those off and it still did it. wonder if i got a bum camera
its doing a lot of ghosting if there's any quick movement
sounds like a bum camera
Where is the best please to look for sonoff/MQTT support?
@tiny mesa #diy-archived
@amber bramble i think its a firmware issue i get some ghosting on quick moves
all of em do it
?rank Other
@tulip dome, you joined Other.
Anyone made a MagicMirror, and if so, used any form of HA integration? Could be a nice side project
i got a magic mirror
interegration is kinda useless
there isnt really that much to display from it
There's one where it uses AIY to voice control it. Having input to show more stuff/run commands opens it up tho don't you think?
you would be better of having a simple webrowser with ha logged into it displaying various stats thru out the day
they have a sensor for homeassistant
that makes sense
two actually
Yeah lol, I saw there was some HA connectivity via it's REST API
See, I work from home. So HA for managing my home, but MM for managing my work. Calendar view, al that jazz
what does it take to kill an rpi with the gpio pins?
The wrong voltage for a start
but if i short circuit a gnd pin and a gpio pin will it kill it
Ground, probably not
Really though, that's the kind of thing you're better asking in #diy-archived if it's HA related, or a Pi related forum/Discord
then i just have to make sure to connect to the right pin
but if i connect two gpio pins together?
🤷
like egon said never cross the streams
Hey
Hello world.. From Brazil... 😃
I made the mistake of venturing into /r/datahoarder and now i want to build a 24-bay NAS
@amber bramble whats just because you didnt read about those 300TB Nas setups.. go on read more!!
I've no idea what I really need that for, but that's not the point 😄
/r/homelab is also a mistake 😉
yes. yes it is.
only problem with most of the homelab and datahoarder builds is the amount of power since they're using older gear
Yeah, it's why when I built my home server it was done with a then new low power Xeon
i like the fact that my entire house averages 350 watts idle...
Pretty sure my house idles at way above 400W. Sure, the server is under 100W, but there's a gazillion chargers, Sonos, Squeezebox, Google Home Minis, etc etc etc. Oh, and TV, X-Box, and so on
looks like 370 might be the new average for my house. i replaced my pi with an old laptop and added a few more ip cameras recently.
it used to be 270-300... slowly creeping up
The electricity bill is within the definition of reasonable - I'm not looking too closely at what the draw is 😛
my electric company sends letters that shows your house on a graph compared to the average of other houses in your area which has turned it into a bit of a game for me
No gamification like that here, just the "you should have a smart meter" grind
i wish they'd replace the meters in my area with smart meters
Of course, they're only just now getting around to moving on to the second generation, the first generation only works with the supplier that fits it
the company has an ha integration, but my area hasn't gotten the new meters yet
So, right now, going smart meter is still likely to be a mistake
At a practical level, I'm not that bothered about them, but then I don't expect to be able to meaningfully reduce the power draw in the house
I do occasionally wonder how much a small (500-1000W) solar array would cost. it would be super cool to offset a chunk of the power draw from some of my tech with solar, but it seems like solar might still be too expensive
Yeah, I would like solar, and something similar to the Tesla powerwalls (there's others in the market after all)
Ideally I'd want to be in a place where I could run the bulk of the time on solar, and have the whole house on an UPS
Not sure how practical that is up here though 🤷
Ahh the sweet music of heavy rain 😍
yeah, i don't think i could swing running full-time on solar here, not enough non-cloudy sunny days and not enough surface area on my roof facing the right directions
what are you guys using to monitor power? That needs to be my next addition
thinking of going this route but not sure: https://openenergymonitor.org/
It's what got me into home automation. Spent several nights at the power meter with the oscilloscope balanced on a chair to get it working...
(the custom arduino thing I had before finding out about mysensors, that is)
I guess that's probably pretty accurate too right?
Since my box is outside (like most?) I'd have to figure out a nice weather proof solution though
It's accurate down to one Wh in my case, so yes, but that depends on the meter.
I dont't know where I need to post this, but I buyed a Smarthings hub before konws about ha and now arrived and I can not find him on my cell phone (samsung S8). I already reset it and it has a green light on but does not connect directly ... Can anyone help me?
If you've got problem with SmartThings, I'd ask on their forum... https://community.smartthings.com/
@last plaza
Got the control panel up in our daughters room 🙂
she is currently obsessed with trolls so she'll be excited
@dull chasm why don't we have a appdaemon channel?
there typically hasn't been enough appdaemon chatter to warrant its own channel outside of #general-archived
that's unfortunate
and the PRs on appdaemon github are piling up
wonder if i should just switch to node red
@odd mason the idea would be that appdaemon would be covered under software
i think that's a bit confusing to be honest
@odd mason the idea would be that appdaemon would be covered under software
why? .... is it not sofware that talks to ha? .... honeslty node red should be included also
yea that's why it's confusing
node red has it's own channel but appdaemon doesn't
that's all i was saying
node-red got split off into its own channel based on the volume of discussion iirc
node-red is an iot platform itself, whereas appdaemon is nothing without HA
you can still run node-red for other things, appdaemon you can't
np ... well node red was all the rage then it quieted down... so we prolly move
thats true ..... but this would be the wrong place to discuss that
well technically you can use app daemon without HA
but it wouldn't make any sense
but i get it
i still prefer appdaemon/writing python to node-red
which reminds me, i have a bunch of automations i need to write
me too
i was just researching if i can write custom code on node-red
just annoying that appdaemon is lagging behind because the PRs are piling up
yeah, i'm hoping it will get some updates now that HA is implemented new auth
i dont want to be stuck with legacy api password enabled forever
agreed. we have people that want to help make it better but we need someone to start merging PRs
@upper notch is the appdaemon maintainer
Guys , I can hear you talking about me 😉
yea we've been in contact on the mqtt PR. it's just a lot of work for one guy to handle and i'm sure he's doing his best
I've had a medical issue preventing me from spending time in front of a screen
It's getting better now
completely understand @upper notch . Rest up buddy. please don't think we're ungrateful for the work you've done
just trying to brainstorm how maybe we can get more help to keep the project humming along
All good 😃 I'll be getting back to it soon, will be working on the new auth as part of it
sex change?
my @ the maintainer plan worked 😛
well 🤣 pic now has a dress 🤣
Not a sex change no ...
ok .... was worried.... but jokes aside hope your ok
Thanks , been a lot better
as long you didint lose any important parts
Nope, all present and correct
Maybe 😉 then I'll go work on AD
ok i think @odd mason would deliver a liter or two 🤣
i'm always good for a few bottles
and prolly a 🌻
😂
@rich aurora whats wrong with that?
inGH?
inHg
yes i see i have hpa
all others are working with ethernet as arg
i have windows not linux
ok ipconfig
try eth0 @merry hearth
@dull chasm after changing it to eth0, no more sensor data on frontend
oh..... use glances i guess ....
sry jsut not in my group, its on the default page as status unkown
- sensor.ipv4_address_ethernet
is that correct?
systemmonitor1:
name: HTPC-01
entities:
- sensor.ipv4_address_ethernet
- sensor.network_in_ethernet
- sensor.network_out_ethernet
- sensor.packets_in_ethernet
- sensor.packets_out_ethernet
- sensor.disk_use_percent_c
- sensor.disk_use_percent_d
- sensor.disk_use_percent_e
looks ok
i may have te report a bug
yea.... well windows isnt very friendly
😃
Home Assistant release with the issue: 0.76.2 Last working Home Assistant release (if known): 0.76.2 (first version i ever used) Operating environment (Hass.io/Docker/Windows/etc.): Windows 10 Pro ...
is that ok?
i just wanne make sure i do it correctly, going to sleep now goodnight
Where in the world are people from? If anyone is alive in here..
🇬🇧
🇸🇪
Where in Sweden? 🇩🇰 here btw.
🇳🇴 here!! 😄
Nice @vast dove, great to see a lot of scandinavians here 😃
@fallow fox @midnight adder @light trout come on! Show off that you are Norwegians 😉
My soon-to-be-wife studied in Tromsø for a while 😃
Nice, but too cold
What!:P
Tromsø is beautiful in the winter though! 😉
I've heard that the northern lights are beautiful up there
False, they are too bright 😂
The only sky I can see is just black.. no stars due to light pollution here in Copenhagen
@light trout To bright, my a**.... Spectacular is the word you´re looking for! 😄
Maybe :P
It's been a while since I last saw one 😛
Me too... Where I live there are almost no northern lights at all... 😦
I like the desolate parts of Norway and Sweden, so quiet and calm
And there is no interference on the zwave networks either in those places!
There are no network at all in those places @vast dove 😂
That's the major issue and right now I probably wouldn't be able to live anywhere with less than 100 Mbit/s internet 😄
😄 😄
I feel old remembering back to the days where I used a 56k connection
Time to get some sleep. Take care!
I'm in Scotland 😃
and you still sober enough to type at this hour?
@last plaza Going to test now.
The Original Xiaomi Aqara motion sensors are on sale $11.99. https://www.gearbest.com/alarm-systems/pp_659226.html?wid=1433363
☝ is the lowest I have seen for the past few months
if the temp/humidity sensors go on sale i'm tempted to buy a stack of them
yup
pretty cool
and random
morning all
Hi there, I apologize if this is easily found information and I've just looked over it...
...is there a easily configured interface for Home Assistant to set up say, an inexpensive Fire Tab with a browser or app to have put somewhere specifically for guest that aren't familiar with the system?
I've got IOT devices basically everywhere in the house and I want to make it easier for guest to interact with my smart home devices.
Obviously it's not too difficult to use Alexa for things, but I'd really like to get an inexpensive tablet to have setup in the garage since that's usually where the family, friends and I gather in the Texas summer.
I don't have Home Assistant setup right now, but I've got a small homelab and soon I'm going to spin up a Home Assistant container to compliment the other resources I've got.
@swift oxide 1) Where in Texas you are? I'm in Fort Worth.
- Check out Lovelace (the #frontend-archived channel is quite helpful for this). Lovelace has proven itself to be useful in many situations, including one you might be applicable to your situation.
@peak cloud I'm in San Antonio, but I occasionally come up that direction to visit my Mom.
I'll be in San Antonio in a couple of weekends for a friend's birthday celebration. 😮
If you ever find yourself in SATX or know you will be in the near future, please feel free to PM me because I'm always interested in hanging out with other geeks.
Ahh.
Feel free to PM me. We can meet for a drink or some tacos, or both.
Just let me know at least four or five days in advanced and I can usually be available.
I'd much prefer both. ❤
Lol
Sept 7-9 I'll be there.
I sent you a PM.
thought BBQ was standard in texas 😛
@rancid lance It is. We actually have four different types of BBQ in our state.
^^
damn work is fucking bleed ultra boring
got a new desk at work so setting my workplace up again
Did you remember to label all 34 of your cables?
naa i just grabed shit from another desk 😛
so fuck that person that sits there 😛
im more valued 😛
Barbecue is very standard in Texas. It's what I had for lunch both yesterday and today. 😛
Yesterday was barbecue from what is, in my opinion, one of the best BBQ joints in Texas.
Lunch today was leftovers from my own homemade barbecue.
@swift oxide Man, if your favorite BBQ joint isn't in Everman, you need to rethink your life choices. 😂
I haven't been to a BBQ restaurant in a couple of weeks, but I've had my fair share of homemade BBQ plenty of times to hold me over.
I don't necessarily have one specific favorite because I've got friends that make better food than any restaurant in any state I've been to, but my favorite BBQ joint to visit is Texas Pride Barbecue in Adkins.
How far is that from SATX?
nice to have total overview of the home 😄
scrapped my remote in favor of system overview
We've got a big group coming down next weekend (about 14 to 18 people). I'd love to take them to a nice BBQ joint.
My work is off of I35 on the northeast side, and it would take me about twenty minutes to get there from my work without much traffic.
Looking at what Lovelace offers, I'm pretty sure it's exactly what I'm looking for.
.sharethelove
A place for LoveLace Config https://sharethelove.io/
Good place to start
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it.
@honest geode Should prob move to here.
What would only use 10w?
the shelly 4 looks good and the display is nice. though 2300w is a bit light.
IMO the power measurement should update at least every 10 seconds, preferably every 5 seconds like on i.e. Tasmota
You would be limited to how often you make an API call anyway
For example if you're trying to determine if your washing machine is done or not, with something like <20W, then it takes quite a while to get an impulse - and you would actually need two to be confident
That's where the 5 seconds MQTT from Sonoff is great.
Definitely liking this talking of monitoring power consumption. In the nearish future I was planning on building a basic solar array to hopefully generate enough power to sustain my homelab completely off of solar.
It's not really necessary because electric prices where I am are dirt cheap, but I enjoy projects involving electronics.
https://wattwatchers.com.au/our-customers/utilities/ I have one of these at the moment and it updates really slowly
That's the thing.. you can never have too frequent updates - you can always filter some out, aggregate to lower resolution or discard. But you can never get more than you have.
That's definitely not an inaccurate statement.
My efergy has an update interval of 6 seconds.
Currently don't have anything in place to monitor energy usage in my homelab, but I'm currently in the process of moving hardware around so it isn't much of an issue.
The most annoying thing is having to reconfigure my pfSense box and I forgot to take notes of the information for the IPMI on it.
Wish I could get access to the wattwatchers one as I think the unit itself updates way faster but since it is controlled by power company they wont allow direct access.
To all NORWEGIANS : You are invited to TIBBER lanseringsevent: http://revolution.tibber.com/ .
@chrome heart SSL certificate error? Edit: never mind, now it directed to http
Hvad er en "pulsklokke" ?
Yes, some problems with Tibber page and the company hosting the event
pulsklokke = pulse watch
Something the marketing dep chose to call it. 😃
Ahh. My norwegian is a bit rusty 😃
@peak cloud Are you looking for GOOD BBQ here in SATX or just a "nice" place? REALLY GOOD would be Barbeque Station on Loop 410 @ Harry Wurzbach
