Same in the UK to be fair
Though they do a form of it through using your card, PIN, and a card reader
(I say form of it, because part of logging in to your account is likely to require the account number printed on the card, but better than nothing)
Meanwhile in Austria:

holy crap thats crazy!!

@light trout i want brown color for the guy that drinks beer alot π
So... new to discord... I noticed I can't upload files in some channels. Is that a right a channel mod grants you, or how does i work?
A lot of channels have that disabled
Like #frontend-archived, for example. People post pictures all the time, but I can't.
there's a role the mods can give you to let you post pictures (your name turns grey instead of white)
I want that too @rancid lance !
or it could be brown for IBS... lets think this through π
actually drinking an icecold sourbeer right now
I'm at work.. so on coffee unfortunately
@amber bramble I think they took mine away π
NICE
now we just need an update on the google location sharing
and no more owntrack
π
for battery
That is great new but I never got the google tracker to work properly. Might give it another go then.
@rancid lance wth is a sourbeer..?
a sour beer is a beer made from sour mash
Oh nice, not heard of that before
load of differant beer styles out there
18 months... I definitely couldn't brew that myself. Altho I do have some strawberry bacardi I made last summer, and strawberry vodka I made 2 summers ago
So it seems, I might look into trying some of those, they sound interesting

Are they being banned? There not being banned, the US goverment is being stopped from buying them
Yo. and stuff. How's it hanging, Are everybody's truffles being sufficiently grooved?
Has anyone made the transfer over to Lovelace yet completely? @last dirge have you done it yet?
anyone who uses ombi/plex have a good way of friends marking a film as poor quality
@maiden estuary did you setup Issues in Ombi? you can create custom categories and your friends can go in there and use that
you need to be on v3 i think
Just done it buddy, thanks for the point in the right direction, just slipped right over that!
What is ombi
Where that lovelace comes from? Anything to do with good old Linda? π
@pure vine Ombi is a Plex request site you can set up for users to send you requests for the server...also integrates with other apps as well for a seamless experience
Which is the best channel to get prompt replies? I've not been getting many responses at all, if any
The chanel matching the topic you have issues with will be the best π
Also @honest kelp you'll only get replies if somebody is around who can help you. If there's nobody who can help you, you won't get a response π That may mean your question goes out of view before anybody who can help you comes online, in which case the forum might be a better choice, though you can always repost a few hours later
PM with me @rancid lance π
ludeeus ?
What?
pm why ? π
Thats the "proper" place to resolve issues with beer π
I like it π
although drinking random liquids from a stranger is probly on the "do not do that" list
π
@clever mortar I've posted a question in the home-assistant channel on window opening. Is there anyone that might have insights on that
I've given you a quick answer to get you started

@shy comet - I'm using heimdall at the moment, is organizr got many advantages over that?

ohh looks lovely
Drain cleaner
really ?
yeah, not impressed at all
had a lovely one yesterday that was honey based - that might be my new favourite beer
been drinking dugges tropical thunder
its an sour beer
peach and mango
really good when its been warm
drinking it icecold is really nice π
hmm I've only tried one sour beer before and didn't gel with me - need to try some more
that beer is awesome
joined the wait list... hope it drops in price though!
its a small company
its hard to come by even here
and i live like 6 miles from the brewery
so i get the pricing π
thats how close i live π
post some then π
haha
@maiden estuary yes Heimdall looks to be a simple dashboard for links, Organizr does much more than that. I like to think of it as a combined experience of Ombi, Tautulli, Sonarr, Radarr and others. It makes good use of the API for admin features and some user features. I personally love the combined calendar of TV and Movies. Also nice that you can literally do everything from the homepage. Search Ombi/Plex, make a request, play directly in browser. It also does user groups and user roles so you can control who see's what tabs. SSO for Ombi, Plex and Tautulli so users only sign in once. They can also run a speedtest to your house to see how the connection....its like full featured dude its awesome π
lol how much shit do u need for plex
1 page that does it all @rancid lance π
yes it does i tested it yesterday when my botvac got stuck after the update π
nice
working on my homeassistant setup right now
installed hassbian to an ssd
and removed the sd card
yeah way better write / read speed
i just got done upgrading my network to ubiquiti π been really happy with it
$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda
[sudo] password for homeassistant:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1014 MB in 2.00 seconds = 507.06 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 110 MB in 3.01 seconds = 36.60 MB/sec
again it might not be much
but its still better then sd card
USB connected I take it?
and it doesnt wear and tear like an sd card
yes tinkerer
so still limited to usb speed
Yeah, but still sweet
yeah wasnt hard to do at all
Now if only somebody would do a sensible case for SSD+Pi π
This section contains documentation with technical information about the Raspberry Pi hardware, including official add-ons and the Pi itself.
well wd did
got a sweet case for osmc that wd did
@rancid lance just wait until you move beyond the pi π
i was lucky to have a spare computer (old plex server) to use π
1 minute restarts are hard to say no to lol
not like my buddy that has a hp ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2 in his livingroom
ive been uisng a shield so far as my main HTPC (not media server)
been very happy with it
my pi reboots in under a minute
HA?
im ok with that
naa but its running again under a minute
ssh and everything is up
~$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 5.120s (kernel) + 12.552s (userspace) = 17.672s
.sharethelove
A place for LoveLace Config https://sharethelove.io/
thats what ive got setup π
yea been checking that out π coming along nicely!!
another reason why i have more powerful hardware is because I run ZoneMinder
probly not gonna happen either π
when i want to record on all my cameras as the same time i need those resources
that makes sense
actually got a bootsequence image
seems i pulled from the wrong server before
thats the actual boot time on rpi with an ssd
all and all not that bad considering
thanks @shy comet will investigate

Does anyone help with droplights?
@rancid lance i use a yubi key
odd....the hassio and homeassistan channels just vanished off my list
Anyone else had that?
no

Lol at just posting 7 photos of a tablet in different locations... My input is turn it on.
Lol
looks like advertising to me π€
and a really crappy one at that
i like how the charging plug is plugged in and goes nowhere ...just like ikea and rooms to go
π
cord to throw it?
ok?
i'm still a lil fuzzy on what you trying to do here
we see pictures of a screen no explanation and a birds nest of cables
if you trying to peddle something you not doing a very good job
Touchscreen cord? Do tablets not come with touch screens? I am rather confused. Is it just a mini tv?
god knows
and now the port is used by a touchscreen cord .. can t even plug in a chromecast
"here are some of the places we think you can put this tablet" "in this one you can see it sitting on the floor, this one it is on a window sill and lastly the place where it will likely end up, in with a random pile of cables on a shelf"
..............................................................................................................................
Look this controls your smart home
so... you throw it at things you wanna remote control?
its not controlling my smart home ...ha is
What cable?
I am still confused. If this is using the HomeAssistant UI that would imply it uses the HomeAssistant back end...
So why would I want this and not just an off the shelf tablet with my HomeAssistant home page loaded?
It's not running home assistant @quartz ether
shhh man i'm trying to find out what the cable on the tablet is
or screen or whatever it is
Switch - Home AutomationToday at 3:50 PM
I was gonna use Home Assistant UI
so what was it connected to?

Why?

Raspberry Pi
Where is the pi? That is just a tablet
where is the rpi?
Please.
ah
Oh so its a big ass touch screen.

It's actually not big
compared to a tablet with a 10 hour runtime it is
Why not just install Hass on that and then be done with it? Or are you creating your own smart home system like Hass/smartthings/HAB etc?
Or are you creating your own smart home system like Hass/smartthings/HAB etc?

Yup @quartz ether thats what im doing
I'm still working on it @dry cairn
you at the i can turn it on stage yet?

right now it just runs raspian
Working on a few things to make this as a product
I need to go anything else @dry cairn
yeah
i'm not sure why you posted it here
advertising?
well i guess this giant brick and its purpose remains a mystery
If you are making your own system then you really shouldnt be here...
Thats like going to microsoft and asking for help on how to make the OSX
Sorry "asking for input"
fix not make π
nope we had our fun ... you may go now
@spark canyon If you are trying to make a business where you can sell what ever it is you are trying to make I would suggest you just straight on sell the unit as it is or charge a setup fee to add a base "os" of the smart home system they want. But either way you should not be here.
Not ttyl.... just bye.

What's it called in fiction when the author inserts a character who is supposed to represent the reader?
didnt realize that this was a commercial channel now π

appears i did
must have been nice did you recive a free sample ?
we all know that in order for a product to be successful you gotta give away free samples
I might still get one
hehe yepp
damn finally dynamic backgrounds for lovelace cards
so freaking nice
@light trout found an issue
Ludeeus is away for 7h 3m 15s with a message :point_right: Lurking in the shadows.
it doesnt react when setting scan_interval
still ticks on 10 min
got mine set too 60m
yes, if that would have worked, it would have been in the documentation π
Hi all. I'm using owntracks to track where i am with HA. What would be a valid response code of owntracks? is it 200?
oops... i though i clicked that one π
Beer?..... where?
ah! a bar! i see it now π
Does that unsplash thing just scroll images
LOL, exact same img my camera show now π
That would be a painful screen to wake up to...
why would it be that ?
the time and temp are not ok.
yahoo weather is lagging after
and i usually get up around this time
so im ok with that
how about no ?
@rancid lance you should create a "blured" collection
dropping the shadow will result in unreadable text
im good with my style ive set it up to how i want it
if you remove the dropshadow it would be even harder to read π
yes it would
plus the collection contains bright images
just made a collection yesterday
so i need to sort the images better to make it work
thx for the "input" @quartz ether
π
if you make the text in the example black you can still read it π white probably too π
just because it's on imgur it not always true π
Depends on the image. white will get lost in a bright image and black will get lost in dark image so kinda needs to be something like the white text with black outline so regardless of image it works.
Depends on the size of the test π
thats outlined
the image itself is too bright
π
and making the outline larger will only make the font look like shit
ofc it i placed the black text to the corners .... but then i chose the wrong font color π
but dropping shadow in combination with outline kinda works
yes again i added all off that yesterday
Dropshadow looks much sharper π
haha problem solved :p
the rest should work out just fine
There are nice images on that site
Can't believe I missed all the fun π¦
@maiden estuary u missed even more in lovelace π
@rancid lance - aww no - Just went in there to see what's up.. gone very technical π
haha, want it on event not interval π
If you want event trigger, use image with state-image
Exactly.. for the greeter card that's all you want to transition from morning to afternoon to night....
Not necessarily, I want a new img every time I glance at the screen
Event is motion on camera of tablet?
10min interval works for me
Can you not use time: /10
It does not (yet) have a service to force an update, but if it had that could be possible
ahh I see π .. come on, I've been away for like 2/3weeks.. need to get my mind back in HA mode π
Anyone know of any smartdevice to check water quality in a pool/spa ?
Would love a response to this π
telldus has some stuff

there is also

so a simple google
took about 5 min
let that be a lesson π google and ye shall find
@vale shale @bright pagoda
Or you could just let someone else do the googling!
or you can do something yourself π
@maiden estuary you and I had talked about a blue iris switch to start recording and stop. I can see that you have a command_line switch but do you have an article or forum post for where you found that? I am still kind of in the dark about how you do that.
crap well I just found what may be it of course! https://community.openhab.org/t/blue-iris-integration-http-binding-rest-api/10838/2
yep, that'll give you the gist mate π
Okay, I think everyone needs one of these because of reasons...

Hi all, sorry as I'm sure this has come up, but I've searched and searched and can't quite find an answer.
I've lost access to my hass.io panel, I really want to avoid burning a new install and as I haven't yet taken a snapshot.
I can access the configurator so I'm wondering if there is any way from there that I can either enable SSH access (I did have it at some point and I don't remember removing it so perhaps the module just isn't loading at startup?)
Or, if there's a way I can patch/upload the missing javascript file via the configurator
hah, and as I ask, I think I found a solution
ah ok fun, it seems the addon is not installed

Morning all
hardware questions, any thought on which channel to ask?
@here anyone?
this is the right channel for that @gusty relic
this is kinda the miscellaneous channel
unless is diy stuff
then its diy obviously
Am wondering about experience for an POE outdoor camera
not to expensive but thrustworthy
looking at fascam hearing good stuff about it
but curious about experience from other users
https://waffle.io == Awesome! π
oh my goodness, there's a service I haven't seen in a loooong time, glad to see it's still going, looks better than when I last used it too!
@gusty relic I use sv3c cameras. Let me put it that theyβre the kind of camera that you need to block from the Internet with your firewall, but their image is great. I am also using blue iris.
@vale shale are you able to pull blue iris into Home Assistant? or do you grab the cameras direct? I'm also looking for cameras that are functional way below zero. But that's a separate topic.
yes you can go to a web url that the server hosts to grab the camera streams. That is why I mainly use it. This camera that I am looking at getting says so https://www.amazon.com/Security-2592x1944P-Surveillance-Waterproof-Detection/dp/B07DXNDXZR/ref=pd_sim_421_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07DXNDXZR&pd_rd_r=AAVD259S33ZSVDVQNJ7K&pd_rd_w=4h0Id&pd_rd_wg=LR1Q9&psc=1&refRID=AAVD259S33ZSVDVQNJ7K You can also tell blue iris when to record and not record. I just got that integrated.
ooo. I have been loooking at BlueIris, currently i am using an older android running IP cam Viewer as my NVR. I tried ZoneMinder and didn't like the experience(~7 years ago). Blue Iris has been on my todo list.
it's totally worth it!
good to know!
@vale shale ok let's have a look on them.
@vale shale you have it running on a PI as well?
ah I see windows only. Think I still have a nuc somewhere
i was wondering is there any way to fnd out the users by country? or let's say to have groups for some countries or regions where users could come together an discuss over their configurations and help each other out. (similar like discord but on a much smaller scale and LIVE )
That would require channels based on language
that would make moderation of the community a lot harder
LOL This is kinda cool:

@sour hare where are you from?
More specifically where do you live? π
@lucid blade i did and i noticed major speed improvements...for one HA will load up in under a minute...previously it would take 5-10 minutes on the pi.....the other big benefit is being able to run other software at the same time. I use zoneminder alongside HA. I have it setup on my old plex server i5, 6GB of RAM and SSD
are you running ubuntu on it with docker? and hassio??
ubuntu and i have a venv install
oh ok so not hassio+addons then
so you don't like docker?
honestly haven't used it much and before I'd use it I would want to learn more about it....i understand the concept and how nice it is deploy stuff and start over
been using my current setup to learn some development
yeah - I'm attracted to using docker just because it's something new to learn
if I setup another server I would probably start with docker to force myself to learn lol
yeah..... I'm at a point where I could really use another Pi3 but by the time you add it all up, you can get a nuc+8gb RAM and a 240gb SSD for double....
and I know what I'll have more fun with
yea more power is always better but pi3's are a lot of fun since they are like a playground
Thanks
I am probably going to move it to my server
Wanted to see if it was worth it
you won't be disappointed π
the restart time with HassOS is killing me.... not that I change config that much
I only started tinkering with it last week so i am changing it a lot and the reboot times are killing me lol
@shy comet should add a hdd to you pi if your running that
@rancid lance the only thing my pi is running is pihole and assistant relay lol and my dev instance of hass when i have it up π i
i have another i5 sitting here waiting for a use case lol
seems like a waste of an i5 to me
since i bumbed and installed a hdd on my pi3+ its really freaking awesome
it was free lol
hahaha
yea i heard the pi gets a major speed increase
had a spare 120gb intel ssd just collecting dust
so added that to my pi
and removed that freaking sd card
and thats still capped at USB 2.0 lol
but i think in theory its what double the speed?
that doesnt bother me π
yeah
noticable too
no more microlags from the pi
everything is instant
But you can't do that on HassOS (yet)
doesnt hassos use config.txt ?
it does
they borked the kernel
why thou
Several people have tried, the change takes place in the pi, and other distros can be booted from USB, but not HassOS
why not use the mainline kernel for rpi
I bloody tried. Waste of time
seems kinda dumb removing features from the raspberry pi devs
remember when sam did that for OSMC he regretted that pretty fast when new features was introduced π
HassOS are using the LTS kernel, not sure that have the option to boot from USB
That is the one in use by HassOS "Linux kernel 4.14 (LT)"
it's not like pizvelli didn't know people wanted usb boot
usb saves so much replacingment parts like sd cards
cause if you got a heavy read and write application like hass
its gonna wear and tear that card to a stub pretty fast
especiallty if you develop and complile on it
For the time I have run HA, I have had 0 SD cards that have died.
@light trout fetch me coffee π
some sd-cards do load balancing don't they to avoid hammering the same part of the card
@light trout give it time π
@rancid lance I do not deliver, you have to come here π
btw backup and restore 100%
now all data is stored properly
raid 1 with offsite backup
hassio does make the re-setup less onerous with snapshots
hehe my new greetercard is gonna be even more epic
now that i can stick where shit goes
Seems a bit excessive to add the same event 4 times or are you that excited about playing pinball?
π
i guessed.. just kidding π
Γl&Whisky.. nice π
And where is that?
I think he kinda lives on the border.....
They have a nice bar at the top floor there
for me its such a short trip since i live in BorΓ₯s

Don't suppose anyone can recommend a HDMI Switch, HDMI 2.0 (4k@60hz) that has a remote with individual source buttons so that I can automate it?
how many here have an tellstick?
got the cheapest one myself
nope just sensors and switches
Monoprice has some more sales. $5 off $25, 15% off, and 25% off orders over $300, plus some of the zwave sensors are already on sale
That seems like a lot of added complexity for office lights..
But I kind of want to buy them for my garage now
@amber bramble it is gonna be easier to install since it wont require an electrician for mounting and wiring, at least in sweden
Ikea do tradfri panels, no need for PoE
@granite hare , I know he is right , but I still don't like it π
lol
But the platform is actually called untappd (controlled by the name of the .py file) :P
it's just the repo name that are wrong π
@granite hare just no there is no wiggle room when it comes to tm stuff

@rancid lance @granite hare https://github.com/search?q=untappd 290 repos using "untappd" I think its ok, for what we use it for , and how it's named π
if we want to debate semantics, then we should: "The name of your application can not contain the term βUntappdβ or the phrase βDrink Socially,β nor can you in any way claim to be official, affiliated with, or endorsed by Untappd"
we are not creating an application
it is an api wrapper
HA! that is the same argument I have tried to use earlier with @rancid lance π
The application name is "Home Assistant"
@vast dove luxembourg
what's the best way to bring attention to an issue we think is more critical?
create an issue on github and post in the appropriate dev thread in here
@wintry solstice whats the issue? is there already a github issue to look at?
Yeah, i got it squared away, looks like the next beta will take care of it maybe.
it's just when lights are grouped together that are setable via color or dimmer it use to populate and set the group, that's no longer an option.
it's the girl friend asking me about it again and was curious myself. π https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant-polymer/issues/1466#issuecomment-410056197
and you said teh issue is fixed?
@clever mortar yes. But at least in Sweden you need an electrician (officially) to install light fixtures in the ceiling
Tinkerer is away for 8h 48m 31s with a message :point_right: π
actually you can install them yourself up until the point where you plug them in that must be handled by a certified electrican
i didn't realize how many things i had installed on my raspberry pi for HA
i'll be typing sudo apt install in my sleep tonight
you can pass muliple packages to it ;)
sudo apt install pacakge1 pacakge2 pacakge3 pacakge4
that would work if i installed them all at the same time π
mostly i keep finding on-offs that are missing
install it, then find another one a few minutes later
run apt list --installed on the pi then π
woo, all i have left to migrate is grafana (i think, anyway)
I have an evaporative cooler that needs to be powered via a standard outlet (so 120v, I think). Is there a smart thermostat I can buy that would support that connection (with the power cable altered by an electrician), A/C, and my heater?
It doesn't have an IR remote, so I can't go that route with it.
@amber bramble They are very easy to install and assuming your replacing an existing light there should be no need for an electrician .
https://www.elsakerhetsverket.se/privatpersoner/detta-far-du-gora-sjalv/ @tall escarp
is there anything more fun then data migration
Data migration on bonded 10 Gb links π
Data migration over a slow link from an unstable RAID0 "array" is always the least fun
Yeah, I'm grateful I learned that lesson on somebody else's data
i dont give a shit for the data on that nas really
so just migrate what works
and then toss the bad hdd
and restart fresh
with raid 1
RAID 1 is good, 10 is better (but expensive), 50 and 60 are good middle grounds
that nas only has 2 slots π
Ah, so time for a real NAS π
got another nas thats way better
4 bay
running on raid6
4x4tb drives
that one i do care about
4 bay, RAID 6 ?
You'd be way better of on RAID10 there
Same overheads, faster rebuild, faster write
yeah probobly would
RAID60 makes sense if you have lots (well, at least 5) disks, and they're relatively small (to keep the rebuild times down - under 2TB ideally from memory). With 4 disks RAID10 is the best approach (and is still above that, if you can afford the disks)
$
And the answer for that is a second set of disks large enough to hold backups π
Well, upgrade from 0.74.0 to 0.75.3 worked first time - OZW didn't cause a kaboom this time π
theres a OZW update in the current beta
I've only worked 2 days with hass and im so impressed of the vast community around hass for anything and everything. its so mind blowing and awesome
It's a pretty good community all round - we've got the usual help vampire issues, but that's the nature of any popular community
yeah its awsome with all this people like you @clever mortar and many more whos always glad to help somebody with a problem if you can
The biggest problem we're getting now is probably that there's so many platforms and components that nobody knows more than a fraction of them. Heck, we've got components where the only person that knows it is the component developer, who's never been seen in Discord (looking at you, HomeKit)
The rest of us do our best, but some days... π€·
yeah i think i would not by any means would be able to get everything to work with out the help for all these nice people from this discord
what whould people here say, hassio or hassbian
and what is the diffrence between them
hassio - easy
hassbian - more flexibility
@jagged mantle have a look herer https://blog.ceard.tech/2017/11/which-home-assistant-install-is-right.html
so everything i can do with hassio i can do with hassbian?
Hass.io and Hassbian are ways of installing Home Assistant
These are all just that - ways you get Home Assistant installed
Hassbian will not have the addon-store you find in hassio
You dont get add-ons for hassbian
The different approaches have different strengths and weaknesses - for example some components don't work on Windows, Docker brings some challenges, etc
but i can still get them or something like it but more complicated?
Hassbian gives you total control, but you gotta learn Linux. Hass.io makes it easy to add stuff, but makes it harder to go beyond the limits of what it provides
i already learned linux and i like it, but when i installed home assistant i thought hassio was the new better version with everything
Nah, it's the tool for making it easier for the masses to get to Home Assistant
so for me as an tech enthusiast will hassbian be a better choice?
Unless you know docker, and can make your own containers (addons)
but i cant do neither of them but now the question is how i move
is it just to copy the config file over?
For anything other than add-ons, yes
Copy over everything in /config - including any hidden files
IMO the smart thing to do is buy another SD card and do a fresh install
Then if you run into issues you've got your old system ready to go
okay becuse the only addon that i use that isnt samba or ssh is aircast but that should be possible anyways
well i will try now and see how it goes
so the diffrence is that i dont have the hassio tab in the front end
Pretty much
and you will have more controll over the OS.
just remember that With great power comes great responsibility π
No snapshots either, so you get to make your own backups
well lets go then
~backups
You should automate, outside of Home Assistant, taking backups of your configuration, multiple times per day, using a tool that will track and store different versions, as well as creating a bootable backup if you're using a Raspberry Pi series computer. Options include rpi-clone (for bootable backups), rsnapshot (for backups within your home network), and rclone (for online backups).
~backup is my preferred one though π
Be sure to regularly, automatically, back up your Home Assistant install. There are various critical files and configuration options (like the Z-Wave network key), plus all your time. Hass.io has snapshots, and for unix type installs see https://blog.ceard.tech/2017/10/backing-up-home-assistant.html. Oh, and most important of all test your ability to restore regularly.
@light trout At least these days you can't trivially do rm -fr / and have it nuke your system π€·
π€£
its just fun
All Hassbian users are waiting for @light trout to make a backup system for Hassbian π I'm sure he will do it within a few days.
Yeah, but you can still do sudo pip ... and f**k up π
@vast dove It's in the works, but not by me π
well bye hassio
the install part π
haha
i installed once and it lead to this
@midnight adder the problem with that picture is that the contents of the bottle is called Whisky.....
what ... shut you mouth.... thats good ole redneck stuff
most ppl are inhibited installing these things by lack of the ability to read and or read and comprehend
@dull chasm correct.. redneck stuff, not Whisky
but thats what we got hassio for
yes whiskey.... this is gonna go south ....
This is the Good stuff
it would be better if he installed hass in the whiskey, it would be the new trend
thats some yank stuff π€£
Go get yourself some good (though expensive) Japanese stuff - it'll change your mind on what to drink π
i have drank some stuff from all over the world... miltary for 10 years.... the jap stuff will put you night night quick
Hi there! A new user from Sweden here getting the hands dirty. It is really impressive work, and the documentation is gigantic. A bit overwhelming at first, but I think I'll get the hang of it eventually.
lol really? Wonder why is that
why?
I mean, I wonder why it is that swedes are that overrepresented
its so i see it
Never the less, it will be so much fun tinkering with this. It is really frustrating sometimes, but the feeling when you succeed is really rewarding
Welcome to the community @midnight adder π
this is how skynet starts
never thought that disney would be the villan π
@clever mortar almost done π
π
hahaha
@clever mortar all done π
settled for raid0 instead
its just crap on that nas π
unRaid β€
doubt that old feeker supports unraid xD
is there someone who know how snips work i relly need help
And have you done it?
https://snips.ai/ will tell you how the snips software works
i havnt even got so its in hass im still in the console trying to figure out how it works
and the documentation is a piece of sh**t
You install Snips, you configure snips, you plug a microphone into the Pi, go...
but how do i configure snips i need to make intents
but that dosnt explain anything
As the Snips Platform parses this query into an intent, it will be published on MQTT
but do i need to make intents in the console or in the config file
In Home Assistant, we trigger actions based on intents produced by Snips using the intent_script component
https://www.home-assistant.io/components/snips/#running-snips further up the page gives you an example
but they didnt write that phrase any where
All I can say is that maybe you need to actually try setting it up
Have you visited the console and set up your assistant yet?
yeah ive tried but to download it i need to set up an app but it dosnt say any where how to do that and what i do with the app
Snips has a good set of documentation - and their own Discord channel
I'd be really surprised if the answers can't be found there
a dead discord
Then try reading the documentation
thats what ive been trying to do but its just sh**t
Then maybe you need to try importing Alexa/Home
It shows π
whats the easiest way to add ga then?
cloud:
For both it and Alexa
Takes no time, and will eventually cost $5/month
There's also a free component (google_assistant) if you want some pain but no cost
im just 14 so i dont have that money to spend a month
It is fiddly and time consuming to set up
Be sure to read the docs all the way through before you begin
but this then The Home Assistant Cloud is currently free and will become part of the upcoming Community Support Package.
i cant even find the Community Support Package
It doesn't exist yet - hence upcoming π
how long is it until its payed?
03/01 2018 π
what?
That's entirely down to the devs - maybe at the end of next month, maybe this year, maybe next year
That was the first estimate, has been push back
Subscription expires on 1 September 2018, 01:00 is the current message
Pretty likely that'll be pushed back another month
i will just set up with the cloud for now and see if i like it and the see how i do
The functionality is identical
Get a paper route π
The real difference is cloud: takes 5 minutes all in, https://www.home-assistant.io/components/google_assistant/ takes 30 minutes and more, and many people spend days on getting it working
Some seem to struggle for weeks
Do you still have to redo it every 3.month?
Ish apparently - I've had it work longer, and fail sooner
Reminds me, I must actually remove that component at some point
Get it done!
How about now? π
do it! Do it!
I could, but I've already risked two restarts today π
3's the charm? π
Yeah, third time will result in OZW crashing things π
wait the cloud thing isnt hosting an ga its just connecting it...
Thought about getting a second pi and use that dedicated for OZW?
no ill just use the same
@jagged mantle not everything evolves around you ;)
The question was for @clever mortar π
oh
^^
I have, but at this point I'm gonna wait for the 700 series chips and to see what the new owners of Z-Wave bring for the open source community
That's looking hopeful
Tinkerer wanna hear something funny
decided to see if there was a firmware community for my old piece of shit nas and there was π
Oh?
so now its running on a 4.4 kernel π
can even install shit on it
although its slooow as fuck
but still π
so far i only installed glances
not expecting alot from it
but its better then before
imagine running a 10 year old nas π
haha
π
it has a better kernel then my current nas ffs π
sure it might not be optimal for that hardware but still
@clever mortar @light trout @rancid lance https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/378860028595273730/472316833102430220/image.jpg
i dont have anything more fun to do with hass π¦
~cookbook
The cookbook is a list of example automations and can be found at https://home-assistant.io/cookbook/. The cookbook also contains links to find people's GitHub copies of their installs.
Go browse a few repositories, and the worked examples, see if that gives you ideas
but we dont have so much to automate at home we just have a tellstick but there nothing more to do with that
You have mobile phones to detect the presence of?
You have smart devices you can check the state of?
There are weather forecasts, travel sensors, etc etc
I have no devices connected to my HA, just various services ATM
https://www.home-assistant.io/components/ browse that
^ already did
I started with nothing more than presence detection
but the problem for me is that i cant just go get new stuff to add like camras and other stuff as im not the one ruling at home and its only me and my dad who likes this automation system
You don't need to go buying stuff - look at what @light trout said
I didn't have any kit connected to my HA when I started either
what do you have now?
~tinkerer
You can find his GitHub at https://github.com/DubhAd/Home-AssistantConfig/ and his blog at https://ceard.tech/
That lot
Built up over about 2 years all in, including 6 months or so before I started with HA
If you're stuck, go browse the cookbook and githubs and think about what you can use on that component list without any further purchase. Heck, my commute notifications are a pushed notification based off a free online service, and my calendar state
https://blog.ceard.tech/2017/10/putting-cart-before-horse.html <--- Good read when you are starting out
and i have some limitations with my setup as its going thru telldus live and i cant control every thing as id like
biggest thing for me is the automated lights when watching movies/series/tv. Not sure if you've set something like that up yet
Don't focus on what you can't do, focus on what you can do
presence detection is another big thing
(that's good general life advice to be fair - focusing on the things you can't do drags you down)
I lied, I actually have 1 device a netatmo camera, but that is not working :P
https://github.com/ludeeus/Home-Assistant-Config/blob/master/configuration.yaml <--- My current config.
i would like to add so that i can ring the door bell at home but hass takes it as an switch and i cant use it
in telldus live its an bell but hass dont understand that when connecting so it is an switch in hass and i cant use it
Does the switch turn on and off when the bell is rung?
no and if i turn it off in the ui it dosnt do anything and if i go in to dev tools and change its state it just changes back 5s later
So, when the bell is rung, there's no state change?
no
That sounds like a Telldus issue then - not passing that information through
it looks like hass dont know its an bell
Well, HA doesn't have a bell domain
thats maybe why
But, it should map through if Telldus is passing the state change
i just tried but nothing changed
Then you need to look at the Telldus end, and work out why it's not passing the state change to HA
i only have two or three things
us and code... i understand the poor snakes fustrationhttps://imgur.com/gallery/zWjo3Yi
@jagged mantle What happens if you hold and keep pressing the bell?
@agile bolt i cant
Why?
its on telldus live
do any one know a really cheap tablet that i can use for a wallpanel for hass?
if you don't care about "big name" brands like samsung, etc there are some on amazon for under $100. wifi capable.
yeah but i live in sweden so theres much stuff i cant buy on amazon but im looking for something thats just enough like for 30$
That's "a bit" optimistic
it donst need to be "fast" just enough to use the hass ui
while there's always the risk that you get what you pay for, probably any android tablet that's cheap in your local electronics store would suffice. your typical chinese knock off. My father in law, a notorious cheapskate ("what the f brand tv is this, bob??") is using a repurposed touch screen from a point of sale system he found at a discount store
A second hand tablet from 5+ years ago, maybe
i running that right now but its slow as "some non allowed words"
You're not going to get much for $30
tinkerer is right. increase your budget a bit for the touch screen and agreed on 5+ year old tablet would do just fine as well as be chaep
*cheap
yeah mayby but i would like to find a touch screen as you talked about earlier beacuse then i could just buy a rpi
and connect to it
also hi gang! just hanging out mostly -- our new house is in the final closing stages and i'v been gleefully tasked with smarthoming it
@jagged mantle Your best bet will be to track down any local (or not so local) swap meets, enthusiast groups, etc
yeah but im just 14 so its maybe a bit hard
swap meets will sell and buy from and to anyone π
Yup, all you have to do is get there
mom dad! lets go to swap meets this weekend!
yeah i can maybe do a cute baby face and get one
I've been involved in computing from a much younger age, and would go into the local city to that kind of group
If nothing else, you'll learn lots
yeah ive been working with all things that involving tech since ive been 8
Then you're overdue getting out and meeting the local community π
yard sales, estate sales... people always sell the cheap stuff they discovered wasn't Samsung but Samsnug
im living in a small town
I got lots of good, pre-loved, kit through swap meets, fairs, and what have you
