Well

steady hound
#

lol

clever mortar
#

Maybe... ๐Ÿคท

#

It's unlikely to be easy

steady hound
#

i am rethinking on hassio

clever mortar
#

You get to fight Docker, and ResinOS

#

Hass.io is fantastic if the add-ons cover all you need, or you can develop your own

steady hound
#

love the onclick installs, but some times it kills all the fun

clever mortar
#

Once you start wanting to stray beyond that, if you're not familiar with Docker and able to build your own containers, then life gets more complicated

steady hound
#

docer is alien to me

clever mortar
#

Of course, if you don't know *nix then it's always going to be little complicated with a vanilla install, but there are more people to help

#

Yeah, I've not yet learned enough about Docker to know what I think of it, if that makes sense

#

It's a thing I've never had to work with

steady hound
#

my linux knowledge is limited to Rasbian lol

clever mortar
#

Raspbian is Debian with a slightly different coat of paint

#

Most of Debian is like any other Linux, and most modern unix platforms

steady hound
#

so now you are aware of my linux skills

clever mortar
#

If you can find your way around Debian then any modern unix platform is just "odd" - though anything BSD based is a whole 'nother world ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Meh, if you've found man then you're 90% of the way there

agile sinew
#

@clever mortar which BSD?

clever mortar
#

After that it's just experience, and repetition (and lots of Google, no matter how long you've been doing it)

#

FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD... take your pick

#

Dragonfly too, though I've not used it

#

SunOS 3 and 4 though...

I spent "some time" looking after Solaris boxes while Sun was around, starting with SunOS 3.x

hey all. have a bit of electrical question. in my current home wiring, my lights/fans are on separate (dumb) switches and I use the pull chains on the fans to adjust speed. can I replace the fan on/off switch with a variable fan zwave switch?

clever mortar
#

It'd be a Z-Wave dimmer, one designed to control a fan

shut wyvern
#

yep, that's what I was looking at. just couldn't find a straight answer online if a fan dimmer could be used with fans that have pull chains

clever mortar
#

Obviously you'd want to disconnect the chain so you didn't use it, and you need to use a dimmer that's rated appropriately, since not all are

shut wyvern
#

excellent. thanks.

clever mortar
#

Oh, and if it's a single cable that powers both the light and the fan, controlled by the cables, you'll need a dimmable bulb and be aware that the fan and light will speed up/brighten together

shut wyvern

the lights and fan are wired separate

Need a ubiquiti expert... got my workshop fully insulated with foil backed insulation, which in effect has made a faraday cage... so no wifi can get into it... was wondering if unifi had a product that I could mount the antenna's to receive on the outside of the building and do it that way, or if I'm stuck digging up the garden and running an ethernet cable...

amber bramble
#

@maiden estuary something like a nanostation outside the workshop could pick up the wifi from your house, then you'd need to run an ethernet cable inside the workshop to an AP in there

maiden estuary
#

thanks @amber bramble - I'll look into that then.... I don't think the cost of that will go down with the wife very well though if I still have to buy an AP for inside... I can see myself with a shovel ruining my lovely lawn

ok folks - how do you all deal with visitors (and automation rules)? curious to see how people approach it (a simple rule that arm alarm and trigger 'goodbye' when everyone leaves is great until you have guest in the house lol)

#

do you add visitors MAC addresses, do you have 'visitor mode' ?

thorny swallow
#

@wraith temple I use RFID for login/logout; I can associate any NFC/RFID device with a guest profile to allow them to arm/disarm/untrigger the alarm with RFID

#

my BLE prox system will suppliment that; but it sits outside of hass and feeds mqtt data in

#

(which will link BLE devices to the same profiles/RFID tokens in that auth middleware)

wraith temple
#

huh thats quite elegant ๐Ÿ˜ƒ i tried BLE from a separate pi zero but didnt get whole house coverage - and i give my guests a door code (but if say i use my code, HA doesnt know they are there. Do your guests 'tap in' and

royal hatch
#

Anyone have experience or opinion on if I should use access points (ie ubiquiti) or go mesh network with ethernet backhaul for m y home wireless. Current aged wifi/router sucks especially with my new house.

frigid panther
#

So, let's talk a little about terminology....when you say mesh, do you mean one AP connected to network via Ethernet cable, and other(s) connected to first AP via WiFi?

clever mortar
#

There's an active thread on the forum on the topic BTW

royal hatch
#

@frigid panther mesh: like Velop or Orbi with ethernet backhaul to the main node, Access Points: Ubuiquiti access points wired to my router

clever mortar
#

Mesh with wired backhaul and multiple dedicated APs will likely give you very similar results in general terms

royal hatch
#

@clever mortar I must have missed it

clever mortar
#

It'll more be a question, I'd expect, of which brand and which devices

royal hatch
#

ah that makes sense. the only think I was thinking that I could possible gain from mesh (although I do not think the logic exists yet) is soft handoffs between mesh access points

#

based on signal strength

frigid panther
#

So, you are talking more or less about a "unified" WiFi solution. I'm not sure what you should use for home...I run an enterprise wireless network of about 1800 wireless access points...controller based. At home, I use Ruckus, and it is a mesh, and does a good job of handing off based on signal strength. But, they are kind of pricey.

royal hatch
#

@frigid panther can you explain unified?

trail crag
#

~lmgtfy lmgtfy

velvet horizonBOT
frigid panther
#

By unified, I mean where all APs are controlled from a central point, whether that is one of the APs, or something like a controller.

#

As opposed to using say 2 or 3 routers, each individually serving WiFi clients with the same SSID configuration. They don't "know" about each other.

royal hatch
#

@frigid panther so ubiquiti access points would not qualify as this?

frigid panther
#

I can't say...I have a buddy at work who runs ubiquiti at home, but he only has one of them. However, the answer to the question would likely be if you can put one ubiquiti AP in what would most likely be called "master" mode, or some similar terminology

royal hatch
#

@frigid panther makes sense. what is the advantage of having them "unified" sharing the same central point? devices will keep their connections better when transitioning between nodes?

frigid panther
#

Yes, exactly. Plus, your client devices will "see" one network (SSID) even though they'll still know that there is more than one access point. You won't drop connection when roaming from one to another, but will be handed off by the system.

clever mortar
#

It's worth a browser of the Ubnt forums, you'll get all the details on how it works there. Their system is "unified" and designed to allow you to wander around even with a video call going, moving from AP to AP

royal hatch
#

@clever mortar excellent

frigid panther
#

Right. For example, at the University I work at, I can roam all across campus, from building to building, and almost never drop connection. We've got around 100 buildings.

royal hatch
#

you guys have got me happily sold on ubiquiti now. Will be happy to support a HA supporter

#

now just gotta spec out my needs to implement

frigid panther
#

royal hatch
#

๐Ÿ˜„

#

@frigid panther is sd for san diego

frigid panther
#

sd...first and middle initial. I am not that imaginative....

clever mortar
#

Have you got a floorplan of your house?

royal hatch
#

lol

clever mortar
#

Because you can use their controller software to place virtual APs and see what the coverage would be

frigid panther
#

@clever mortar, is that directed at ak?

clever mortar
#

Mostly ๐Ÿ˜‰

frigid panther
#

lol

royal hatch
#

@clever mortar excellent I will try that

clever mortar
#

The only downside is that it doesn't list the new NanoHD yet, so I'm assuming coverage will be similar to the normal HD for working out what I want/need

frigid panther
#

And after you get it, there is an android app called WiFi Heatmap which will let you measure RSSI, etc. and fine tune your placement.

clever mortar
#

To be honest, I'm expecting that their heatmap is pessimistic, and that a single AP centrally upstairs will do. After all, my ancient Asus covers the whole house from one corner.

royal hatch

nanohd is?

clever mortar

Can someone tell me what I need to get started with Ubiquiti Unifi for an apartment. What I've seen so far is that I would need an EdgeRouter X and an AP. Is that correct?

clever mortar
#

I like it because I can run it from the PoE switch that's in the hallway, which I can't do with the full HD

frigid panther
#

Ah..PoE for that? Nice!

clever mortar
#

All their APs are PoE

#

If you want the fully connected thing, you want the Unifi Security Gateway, an AP, and either a Cloud Key or something to run their controller on @rugged bobcat

#

You can use an EdgeRouter, but it doesn't hook into the GUI then

rugged bobcat
#

@clever mortar The gateway doesn't run the controller?

clever mortar
#

No, the idea is that the controller manages gateways, APs, switches, etc

#

You can apparently run it on a Pi

rugged bobcat
#

Ok. I have a spare Pi laying around. So I would just need the gateway and an AP then.

amber bramble
#

I ran the unifi controller on the same pi as hass for a while. it liked to eat all of the memory and lock up the pi

#

might be ok if its the only thing running on the pi though

vast dove
#

Mix and match Ubnt products and manage trough UNMS

clever mortar
#

That doesn't do Unifi I thought @vast dove ?

#

The Ubiquiti Network Management System (UNMS) will be our first system for ISPs that allows you to monitor, configure, upgrade and manage all UBNT devices (except our UniFi family which has its own centralized controller).

#

Or have they improved it and not updated the docs, again

vast dove
#

@clever mortar you're right.. my brain is overheating so i mixed Unifi with AmpliFi support thats coming later this year

clever mortar
#

They've been steadily improving things, so I've lost track of what does what

#

I just wish they'd one thing that did it all

vast dove
#

"UniFiยฎ Connect your UniFi network as UNMSโ„ข client (simple monitoring)"

#

is on their roadmap for Q4 on UNMS

clever mortar
#

Woot!

rugged bobcat
#

Can you use a dumb ethernet switch with the USG?

clever mortar
#

Yup

rugged bobcat
#

So if I connected the LAN port to the switch would the AP go into the switch or can you use the VOIP port?

clever mortar
#

The AP would go to the switch, which goes to the LAN port

#

The VOIP port can be configured as a second WAN, not sure if you can configure it as a second LAN

vast dove
#

You can, but it there is no bridge between the ports so needs its own subnet

#

Just select LAN2 there

clever mortar
#

So it'll be routing all the way

#

Not ideal from a performance perspective

vast dove
#

Correct

rugged bobcat
#

Ok, so not a good idea

#

So I'm guessing then the USG wouldn't work because I have 3 devices that need ethernet in addition to having wifi?

vast dove
#

Get the USG and a switch where you connect your 3 devices and the wifi ap

#

If you want to manage the switch trough the same controller get a Unifi switch

rugged bobcat
#

So I already have a dumb 8 port switch

vast dove
#

then you can use that and plug into the USG LAN1

rugged bobcat
#

I thought LAN1 was for the AP

vast dove
#

Is it a POE AP? if yes, does your switch have POE?

rugged bobcat
#

Switch does not have POE, but the AC lite has a POE adapter

clever mortar
#

The USG (and the big brother) are designed on the assumption that you'll connect a switch to the LAN port, and everything to that switch

#

(including other switches)

#

I mean, heck, that's how all routers work

vast dove
#

Then set up the USG, Connect your "dumb" switch and use the PoE adapter for the AP. All set

rugged bobcat
#

Ok, so the AP lite also plugs into the dumb switch. I was under the impression it had to be plugged into the USG directly

vast dove
#

If you want the Unifi UI to look all shiny and green lights get a Unifi switch with PoE in the mix. But only difference will be the shiny lights and PoE

clever mortar
#

But I don't think the USG does PoE, so it doesn't matter

#

If it's a problem though, just buy a Unifi switch ๐Ÿ˜›

Thats correct

When I start my Unifi journey my USG will be connected to a switch, that then connects to another switch, that then connects to the AP

Neither of those switches will be Unifi, but it won't matter other than the lack of prettiness in the GUI

As I upgrade switches now I'll be properly future proofing them, and also looking at what I'll need when I get network cables run through the walls

whereas a script you would have to call the 'off switch script'

@dry cairn that was their business when windows was king at Microsoft, it seems now that windows throne has been taken azure after Linux gained the server market place as its own and the need for VM servers grew, due to the need for Linux their azure has been a lot more friendly to open source, the behaviour of Microsoft depends on what part of the company is king of the company

On the microsoft aqusition of git hub, there is a lot of FUD coming from the opensource side.

One major agument i have seen is the distruction of skype, but there is an issue, they are only giving examples of Balmer Acquisition, Balmer was a ahole, and would fully absorb and canabibleis aquired companies, Now if we look at recent aquistions of Mojang and Linkedin, One major diffrence is that microsoft has allowed these 2 companys to operate fully indipendently of main microsoft only going as far as intergrating there products(like xbox accounts and allowing you to use linkedin to sign in and link with microsoft certifcations).

annother argument is that microsoft will treat users as the product becuse they think github has no profit making part, yes they do, and one source quotes and estemates that github made $140m in 2016, and now with companys trusting it as it is a microsoft company i expect enterprise subscriptions will rise

I opened mine up to see if I can see anything wrong with it, but nothing I could see with my very limited knowledge of electronics. Checked the fuses and they seem fine but just no power at all...

shy comet
#

ok this made me laugh a lil

#

Please note, however, that the more recent Pioneer models work with Onkyo platform instead.

#

are they the same company now?

orchid rose
#

hmm, maybe ๐Ÿ˜„

shy comet
#

lol

#

pioneer does on/off, volume and source

orchid rose
#

that's good enough for me

shy comet
#

same with onkyo

#

so denon would have the most supported features it seems

orchid rose
#

changing track etc won't really help as I'm not planning on using it as a player. Already have a Chromecast for that anyway

shy comet
#

yea

#

what kind of speaker setup do you have? 5.1?

#

5.1.2 here ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

orchid rose
#

5.1

#

no atmos and not sure how I'd make it work in a rental

shy comet
#

ah yea

#

unless u do upward firing

#

i was really lucky and the house i bought had ceiling speakers perfectly positioned

orchid rose
#

which prolly isn't as good as the real thing

#

heard an atmos setup in a local store and it did sound pretty cool. Was actually surprised as I thought it would be just a gimmick

shy comet
#

yea its definitely not gimmicky

#

i watched a special on how they engineered it, its pretty awesome

#

moving from channel based audio to object based makes a huge difference

@pliant forge to format the code on your mobile device, tap and hold on the single quote. It gives you an option to select backtick. ๐Ÿ˜Š

orchid rose
#

object based used to be a thing in gaming a bit over a decade ago but it's been downhill since

#

OpenAL was pretty fantastic compared to what the 7.1 sounds are in today's games... Hopefully atmos will bring some life to that as well but I have my doubts as people are more keen on buying soundbars than proper audio

shy comet

ive also seen dolby atmos for headphones gain steam

Anyone having issues with the iOS app? I updated to 0.71 from 0.69 and nothing displays properly i.e. entities missing, spacing between lines is off, badges disappearing etc. and I also get the Service system_log/write called popping up every second. On safari in iOS everything works fine and desktop browsers work. I know there is an update coming but I just wanted to check. I just realised this should be in #general-archived apologies

dry cairn

and here i am getting rid of subtitles

shy comet
#

LOL

#

r u using mkvtoolnix?

dry cairn
#

nah plex does a pretty good job of seprating subs and video when optimizing ๐Ÿ˜›

trail crag
#

I wish there was a Mylarr

shy comet

yea the problem with plex though is that it relies on teh language of the video/audio stream to have the language set

dry cairn
#

ok ....you got me curious lol

shy comet

Mylar would be great if it worked better lol

#

its based on Comics

#

LazyLibrarian is aiite

dry cairn

all my video is eng

shy comet
#

yea but inside the mkv im referring to

#

sometimes an upload is set to unknown and thats when plex will fail otherwise its pretty spot on

dry cairn
#

plex will seperate every sub out into a file

shy comet
#

even embedded?

dry cairn
#

in the video file yes

#

you mean the subs that are within the video right

shy comet
#

yup insdie the mkv

dry cairn
#

yep it gets em out unless some jackass added it to the actual video

shy comet
#

ah yea the hard coded ones

dry cairn

yeah

shy comet

KORSUB

#

๐Ÿ˜›

dry cairn

so optimize on same as video and very slow and off the sub comes ๐Ÿ˜›

yeah i need none

@trail crag its nice to see that mylar is still being updated today too even though its not as great as the other tools based off sonarr

shy comet

anyone here an android user and also have Ring?

maiden estuary

@rancid lance worth it, looking at getting into it, but don't want to bother with a starter kit if it's more expensive and less tasty than shop brought

rancid lance
#

depends on how you brew it

#

the stuff i brew is really tasty

maiden estuary
#

hmm might have to have a look then at getting a starter kit.. do you have thousands of quid worth of equipment, or just a bucket and a jug?

rancid lance
#

the trick to making good beer is a sterile environment when brewing

#

and it all depends on what type of beer you want to make also

#

i love IPA and DIPA

#

so for me its easy

#

its worse if you wanna make lager or some shit like that

clean good buckets and watch temperatures etc when brewing

#

I've just started and looking for any great recipes

midnight adder
#

๐Ÿ‘
I have an offset smoker as I like the low and slow method - but I am looking to move back to a kettle grill.

Get yourself a nice pork rib, make some bbq sauce ( i like a carolina gold ), peel off the membrane from the ribs and smother it, add in a litle sprinkle of brown sugar, put it in a foil tray and throw it in. Low and SLow. Keep brushing it down with more sauce. You serve that with some BBQ Beans - Beans, Br Sugar, BBQ sauce, Chillis and chopped onion and you drink it with beer.

#

Dont do a typical UK BBQ of throwing sausages, burgers, chops, wings, thigh, all on and making a feast of it. Pick a dish and cook it well.

#

You also have to grow a long beard and put on an american accent - it adds to the flavour.

maiden estuary

@midnight adder 10-4 ๐Ÿ˜‰ I brought a traeger yesterday for low and slow.. still love my weber kettle though. yes we tend to try and cook at least one of ever member of the farm yard over here ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
