lol
i am rethinking on hassio
You get to fight Docker, and ResinOS
Hass.io is fantastic if the add-ons cover all you need, or you can develop your own
love the onclick installs, but some times it kills all the fun
Once you start wanting to stray beyond that, if you're not familiar with Docker and able to build your own containers, then life gets more complicated
docer is alien to me
Of course, if you don't know *nix then it's always going to be little complicated with a vanilla install, but there are more people to help
Yeah, I've not yet learned enough about Docker to know what I think of it, if that makes sense
It's a thing I've never had to work with
my linux knowledge is limited to Rasbian lol
Raspbian is Debian with a slightly different coat of paint
Most of Debian is like any other Linux, and most modern unix platforms
so now you are aware of my linux skills
If you can find your way around Debian then any modern unix platform is just "odd" - though anything BSD based is a whole 'nother world ๐
Meh, if you've found man then you're 90% of the way there
@clever mortar which BSD?
After that it's just experience, and repetition (and lots of Google, no matter how long you've been doing it)
FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD... take your pick
Dragonfly too, though I've not used it
SunOS 3 and 4 though...
most of my stuff runs on illumos (the Solaris fork) since my background is in kernel development there
I spent "some time" looking after Solaris boxes while Sun was around, starting with SunOS 3.x
Great hardware
Poked into the kernel side, just enough to realise I didn't brain that way, and went back to making the boxes behave ๐
I used some Sun systems in college, also Novel Netware
Oh, Netware... there's a nightmare from the past
I had to learn to write login scripts on it
And you're still sane? ๐
Well, I was a college student
And I've never been sane
Great cause, but yeah, you're insane ๐
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it
๐
I like the use of orange for the cables and grips
Diamondback used to have a bike with an orange frame and blue accents, I'm kinda stuck the other way
Currently have a new fork sitting in the trunk of my car for it too

hey all. have a bit of electrical question. in my current home wiring, my lights/fans are on separate (dumb) switches and I use the pull chains on the fans to adjust speed. can I replace the fan on/off switch with a variable fan zwave switch?
It'd be a Z-Wave dimmer, one designed to control a fan
yep, that's what I was looking at. just couldn't find a straight answer online if a fan dimmer could be used with fans that have pull chains
Obviously you'd want to disconnect the chain so you didn't use it, and you need to use a dimmer that's rated appropriately, since not all are
excellent. thanks.
Oh, and if it's a single cable that powers both the light and the fan, controlled by the cables, you'll need a dimmable bulb and be aware that the fan and light will speed up/brighten together
the lights and fan are wired separate

does anyone know where bruh automation (Ben) has been?
Working on other stuff but he posted on Twitter a few days ago that he's on his way back
๐
Somebody who used to do a bunch of videos on home automation, then vanished
They were good, but given the rate of change on Home Assistant those ones dated very fast and caused some confusion
On the other hand, his DIY multisensor video, Digital LED strip video, etc etc are all still awesome
aight, cool.. i have to look into him - pardon the expression
RIP TotalBiscuit
^ Context for the message i am pointing at

Thanks, sorry should have added some context myself.
anyone has "Learn Java in One Day and Learn It Well 2016 vol 4 by Chan, J" need it for a class on tues.. Amazon will deliver on Tues and B&N in a week .
guys & girls, yallow, very random question
I wanna do some stupid things like voice commands, some useful, some just for shits and giggles
for example play dramatic music when i shout "dramatic music"
which would suit better - amzn echo, g.home or some diy based on raspberry pi?
also apart from that - what would be better for integration with home assistant?
https://www.home-assistant.io/components/#voice lists the ones that can integrate with HA
If you just want to shout at it with no keyword, none will work for you
All require a trigger phrase
but I guess if I have most of my things in scenes and MQTT set up with mutliple triggers
I could probably just set custom triggers on alexa/google side
Google doesn't support custom triggers, without the use of Dialogflow
so that it would just send a message/trigger api endpoint
If you're wanting the most flexibility, then look at Snips, since it runs locally
You can build all the intents you want
Doesn't look like it
I must resist
not jumping into the community forums and smash the hell out of some topics regarding security
Some stuff that gets written...
oh my
๐
I've tried to restrain myself
I mean, there are some valid points being raised, but they're lost under the wall of FUD
It's hard enough when I point out "Hey, the docs cover this here" and then somebody suggests that the next page in the docs should include that information ๐คฆ
Where's the channel I can shit on Liverpool? What a shitty discord...
I say "Hey booboo, bedtime" and it turns off all my downstairs lights for me. Google can create shortcuts for commands
That was to @simple bane lol
Hi, I'm trying to make a hass addons, but I got some problems. Which is the right channel to speak about this? Thanks
@forest wraith at #devs_supervisor-archived
thanks @dull chasm

Please Keep this in mind tommorow
pretty sure 110000 of those have been killed by the vet clinics ๐ซ
@dry cairn you around?
Need a ubiquiti expert... got my workshop fully insulated with foil backed insulation, which in effect has made a faraday cage... so no wifi can get into it... was wondering if unifi had a product that I could mount the antenna's to receive on the outside of the building and do it that way, or if I'm stuck digging up the garden and running an ethernet cable...
@maiden estuary something like a nanostation outside the workshop could pick up the wifi from your house, then you'd need to run an ethernet cable inside the workshop to an AP in there
thanks @amber bramble - I'll look into that then.... I don't think the cost of that will go down with the wife very well though if I still have to buy an AP for inside... I can see myself with a shovel ruining my lovely lawn
there's also this unifi mesh AP https://unifi-mesh.ubnt.com/#products which looks like it has removable antennas
any idea if the mesh is interchangeable with the standard AP's?
might be able to run one of the antennas outside and one inside, not sure
I don't really know anything about the mesh APs ๐ฆ
no, nor do I... perhaps more research required... and again is one antenna 2g and one 5g.... not a bad idea though
@maiden estuary you may be able to do powerline ethernet
Yeah tried powerline but it has to go through two fuseboards before it gets down there and that appears to be too much for powerline
The outdoor ap looks perfect..just need to see if the antennas then only send the signal back to the outdoors
Anyone here involved with the konnected.io stuff?
looks like a pir or camera
ok folks - how do you all deal with visitors (and automation rules)? curious to see how people approach it (a simple rule that arm alarm and trigger 'goodbye' when everyone leaves is great until you have guest in the house lol)
do you add visitors MAC addresses, do you have 'visitor mode' ?
@wraith temple I use RFID for login/logout; I can associate any NFC/RFID device with a guest profile to allow them to arm/disarm/untrigger the alarm with RFID
my BLE prox system will suppliment that; but it sits outside of hass and feeds mqtt data in
(which will link BLE devices to the same profiles/RFID tokens in that auth middleware)
huh thats quite elegant ๐ i tried BLE from a separate pi zero but didnt get whole house coverage - and i give my guests a door code (but if say i use my code, HA doesnt know they are there. Do your guests 'tap in' and
'tap out' their RFID tags?
yeah I have a bunch of spare tokens; but I usually pair it to their public transport stored value card ๐
interesting idea !
i can send an MQTT command to the auth server; it will then wait for a scan; and add that token to the user from the first payload
rfid tokens sit in a sqlite db
dont suppose you have a write up of this anywhere?
I may eventually move that to appdaemon as i'm using that for more stuff now
Will have soon! ๐
Not sure if the authenticator is code ready for human consumption
sweet - be sure to share it! keen to find a solution to not locking the house and turning the lights off when my visitors are home alone lol
scanner is a NodeMCU with a RC522 and a buzzer and I will publish the Arduino C++ for it too
basically a $10 build.
nice, looking forward to it!
It's actually one of the more stable projects around here LOL
ha - fair
I just got my TTS announcements into the shower; my next task is to remap the evdev input keys to something unique so I can control the bathroom light in the shower ๐
(waterproof bluetooth)
I'm expecting that's a job for lirc.
i havent revisited TTS since the sonos script lost the ability to restore the previous played item (TV or music after the TTS announce)
That annoyed me so much when I was sending it out my best speaker
Now I send it out to the echo dot via bluetooth and the shower bluetooth
but actually out to MPD, which in turn uses pulseaudio
nice
the bathroom speaker supports override from the phone audio profile; so I was thinking of trying out both profiles; but the alexa doesn't yet (but I believe it's coming for car/phone use)
then I could send radio / music and have it do the usual bluetooth car thing when a 'call' (being an announcement) comes in
but thats next time I have time to play
buttons first... ๐
keep me posted on the progress ๐ sounds like a fun project!
Anyone got any thoughts about making Home Assistant highly available?
install it, GO ๐
I'm worried about how heavily I am investing in smart home equipment... what happens if HA goes down?
If it goes down, start it again
guessing that was not the resopnse you wanted :P
Have a look at this thread https://community.home-assistant.io/t/is-it-possible-to-configure-several-homeassistant-docker-containers-to-act-as-a-docker-swarm/38359?page=2
so what you mean highly avalable ? so you not unplugging it at night to save power ?
High Availability means can cope with failure... that link is an awesome start... now I have to learn what any of the stuff in there means
well the usual dealing with failure is cussing followed by hastily unplugging stuff to reboot it
possibly footwear is involved
AFAIK the availability of a High is dependant on which state you live in.
Can it be automated with HA?
That will work ๐
i highly stick to what the doctor ordered
very helpful guys
highly helpful
I'm so glad I found this Discord Channel ๐
i highly doubt that atm
There's a couple of threads on the forum about making it HA
yeah #the-water-cooler is the best
ah man i wonder how much more stuff i can find i can use highly in
Frankly my answer is to ensure I've a bootable backup
I highly doubt you can find highly effective or highly relevant uses for highly
and here i thought its before teatime in australia and you gonna be a buzz kill but i was highly wrong this fine morning
You're also highly wrong about my location, but I highly doubt you're awake enough to realise that ๐
ehhhh australia england ....both have funny accents
It's funny - that's much the view of folks in the UK about the people 50 miles away

That too
But try getting somebody from London understanding somebody from (say) Dorset
i'm still convinced thats the birthplace of the blowjob

Hi peeps ... I just took a Java class at the last min to fill an elective slot... don't know Java but what the hell. the class requires a textbook which I ordered from amazon which not going to get here until sunday. I have almost finish the two assignment for tonight class "Hello world" assignment but without the textbook am stump on one question due 6pm today...... "What syntax signals a Javaโข comment? (In other words, what symbol(s) tell the Javaโข compiler not to process certain text?" .. I took this class because I know I might need it for my automation one day... any takers to help me answer this question... not asking to do my assignment since I have finish 99% but stump on this question . I answer it already but want to double check....Anyone + @last plaza , @clever mortar
@fathom ledge Java - that's a type of โ right?
I haven't touched Java since 1995 I'm afraid
@fathom ledge comments in java /* your comment */
@last plaza and @clever mortar thanks for the reply.... @digital bay have corrected me... @last plaza I had it like you did and @digital bay pointed out the different between what's use for single and what is use for multi
// for single line, and /* comment here */ for multi-line
Anyone using Synology Photo Station?
I messed around with it for like a day but ended up not using it.. my NAS is older and it took up too much cpu/ram
I have synology but don't run photo station
I have soul but I'm not a soldier
So. There are many feet but 1 foot. There are many geese but 1 goose. A mouthful of teeth but 1 tooth. Therefore there may be many sheep, but 1 shoop...
multi ox are oxen so are multiple box boxen?
Amazon US will be blocked in Australia from July 1. This includes not sending to Australian Addresses. You will still be able to use a mail forwarding address as far as I know (some definitely support the GST changes).
sucks to be in australia on july 1 ๐
lol we have Amazon.com.au but the stock variety sucks
i stick with my previous statement
You're not wrong. It's also the start of tax time in Aus on 1 July!
ah
Hey, room. Anyone here using a VPN to access your home network?
PiVPN
So, is that a module/addon for hassio?
~lmgtfy pivpn
Here, try this => http://lmgtfy.com/?q=pivpn
๐
๐
Ah. Ok. So after I asked, I did google, and found a github on pivpn. What image are you running yours on?
In this case I'm running it on Raspbian
But it runs on any Debian variant, it's just wrappers for OpenVPN
Ok, great. I've got an image of raspian etched on an sd. I just has a RPi come "free" after I migrated my hassio from RPi to Ubuntu.
Thanks.
Oh? Maybe I'll do that. I suppose it uses little resources?
lol. Even less if you turn the machine off?
Ah, nice. My Ubuntu server has 8 Gb RAM, so I think I'll go that route.
Anyone have experience or opinion on if I should use access points (ie ubiquiti) or go mesh network with ethernet backhaul for m y home wireless. Current aged wifi/router sucks especially with my new house.
So, let's talk a little about terminology....when you say mesh, do you mean one AP connected to network via Ethernet cable, and other(s) connected to first AP via WiFi?
There's an active thread on the forum on the topic BTW
@frigid panther mesh: like Velop or Orbi with ethernet backhaul to the main node, Access Points: Ubuiquiti access points wired to my router
Mesh with wired backhaul and multiple dedicated APs will likely give you very similar results in general terms
@clever mortar I must have missed it
It'll more be a question, I'd expect, of which brand and which devices
ah that makes sense. the only think I was thinking that I could possible gain from mesh (although I do not think the logic exists yet) is soft handoffs between mesh access points
based on signal strength
So, you are talking more or less about a "unified" WiFi solution. I'm not sure what you should use for home...I run an enterprise wireless network of about 1800 wireless access points...controller based. At home, I use Ruckus, and it is a mesh, and does a good job of handing off based on signal strength. But, they are kind of pricey.
@frigid panther can you explain unified?
~lmgtfy lmgtfy
Here, try this => http://lmgtfy.com/?q=lmgtfy
By unified, I mean where all APs are controlled from a central point, whether that is one of the APs, or something like a controller.
As opposed to using say 2 or 3 routers, each individually serving WiFi clients with the same SSID configuration. They don't "know" about each other.
@frigid panther so ubiquiti access points would not qualify as this?
I can't say...I have a buddy at work who runs ubiquiti at home, but he only has one of them. However, the answer to the question would likely be if you can put one ubiquiti AP in what would most likely be called "master" mode, or some similar terminology
@frigid panther makes sense. what is the advantage of having them "unified" sharing the same central point? devices will keep their connections better when transitioning between nodes?
Yes, exactly. Plus, your client devices will "see" one network (SSID) even though they'll still know that there is more than one access point. You won't drop connection when roaming from one to another, but will be handed off by the system.
It's worth a browser of the Ubnt forums, you'll get all the details on how it works there. Their system is "unified" and designed to allow you to wander around even with a video call going, moving from AP to AP
@clever mortar excellent
Right. For example, at the University I work at, I can roam all across campus, from building to building, and almost never drop connection. We've got around 100 buildings.
you guys have got me happily sold on ubiquiti now. Will be happy to support a HA supporter
now just gotta spec out my needs to implement
Ok. I send over my mailing address for the consulting fee. ๐
sd...first and middle initial. I am not that imaginative....
Have you got a floorplan of your house?
lol
Because you can use their controller software to place virtual APs and see what the coverage would be
@clever mortar, is that directed at ak?
Mostly ๐
lol
@clever mortar excellent I will try that
The only downside is that it doesn't list the new NanoHD yet, so I'm assuming coverage will be similar to the normal HD for working out what I want/need
And after you get it, there is an android app called WiFi Heatmap which will let you measure RSSI, etc. and fine tune your placement.
To be honest, I'm expecting that their heatmap is pessimistic, and that a single AP centrally upstairs will do. After all, my ancient Asus covers the whole house from one corner.
nanohd is?
Can someone tell me what I need to get started with Ubiquiti Unifi for an apartment. What I've seen so far is that I would need an EdgeRouter X and an AP. Is that correct?
I like it because I can run it from the PoE switch that's in the hallway, which I can't do with the full HD
Ah..PoE for that? Nice!
All their APs are PoE
If you want the fully connected thing, you want the Unifi Security Gateway, an AP, and either a Cloud Key or something to run their controller on @rugged bobcat
You can use an EdgeRouter, but it doesn't hook into the GUI then
@clever mortar The gateway doesn't run the controller?
No, the idea is that the controller manages gateways, APs, switches, etc
You can apparently run it on a Pi
Ok. I have a spare Pi laying around. So I would just need the gateway and an AP then.
I ran the unifi controller on the same pi as hass for a while. it liked to eat all of the memory and lock up the pi
might be ok if its the only thing running on the pi though
Yea, I can run it by itself. I have hass running on a NUC anyway.
Run the controller on the NUC then ๐
https://www.ubnt.com/download/unifi/ - they support Debian/Ubuntu, Windows, and MacOS officially
It's running Ubuntu Server. How would I get to the GUI
The GUI is web based
Even if you run the controller on Windows, you reach it with a web browser
Some folks run it on GCP
oh cool.
Mix and match Ubnt products and manage trough UNMS
That doesn't do Unifi I thought @vast dove ?
The Ubiquiti Network Management System (UNMS) will be our first system for ISPs that allows you to monitor, configure, upgrade and manage all UBNT devices (except our UniFi family which has its own centralized controller).
Or have they improved it and not updated the docs, again
@clever mortar you're right.. my brain is overheating so i mixed Unifi with AmpliFi support thats coming later this year
They've been steadily improving things, so I've lost track of what does what
I just wish they'd one thing that did it all
"UniFiยฎ Connect your UniFi network as UNMSโข client (simple monitoring)"
is on their roadmap for Q4 on UNMS
Woot!
Can you use a dumb ethernet switch with the USG?
Yup
So if I connected the LAN port to the switch would the AP go into the switch or can you use the VOIP port?
The AP would go to the switch, which goes to the LAN port
The VOIP port can be configured as a second WAN, not sure if you can configure it as a second LAN
You can, but it there is no bridge between the ports so needs its own subnet
Just select LAN2 there
Correct
Ok, so not a good idea
So I'm guessing then the USG wouldn't work because I have 3 devices that need ethernet in addition to having wifi?
Get the USG and a switch where you connect your 3 devices and the wifi ap
If you want to manage the switch trough the same controller get a Unifi switch
So I already have a dumb 8 port switch
then you can use that and plug into the USG LAN1
I thought LAN1 was for the AP
Is it a POE AP? if yes, does your switch have POE?
Switch does not have POE, but the AC lite has a POE adapter
The USG (and the big brother) are designed on the assumption that you'll connect a switch to the LAN port, and everything to that switch
(including other switches)
I mean, heck, that's how all routers work
Then set up the USG, Connect your "dumb" switch and use the PoE adapter for the AP. All set
Ok, so the AP lite also plugs into the dumb switch. I was under the impression it had to be plugged into the USG directly
If you want the Unifi UI to look all shiny and green lights get a Unifi switch with PoE in the mix. But only difference will be the shiny lights and PoE
But I don't think the USG does PoE, so it doesn't matter
If it's a problem though, just buy a Unifi switch ๐
Thats correct
When I start my Unifi journey my USG will be connected to a switch, that then connects to another switch, that then connects to the AP
Neither of those switches will be Unifi, but it won't matter other than the lack of prettiness in the GUI
Oh, and the forum thread: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/mesh-wifi-or-not/54671/3
I started with an EdgeRouter 5P and a ToughSwitch. Now i got 4 ToughSwitches and 1 USG ๐
and ofc Unifi AP's
I've got a mix of things from over the ages years. Some dumb switches, a couple of ZyXEL smart switches, a NetGear PoE powered switch with passthrough, and a NetGear "smart" switch - because things are scattered around, and I bought 8 port switches where I should have had 16 port ones
As I upgrade switches now I'll be properly future proofing them, and also looking at what I'll need when I get network cables run through the walls
Probably many of us are in the same situation
I can't wait to get out of this apartment so I can actually run cable
Yeah, I first fitted out the house based upon what we needed before we moved, then the gadgets exploded in number ๐คท
I just got into a house in february. aside from house repair projects, I have managed to pull the modem hook up into the center of the house with a couple pulls of network cable to 2 rooms, getting ready for the next step which will involve ubiquiti access points, patch panel, new switch and router and running network cable poe to my cameras
it will take a while and is probably delayed till winter since the attic is so hot in the summer months
So you were forced to do <CTRL><H> a lot ๐
Nice
Not sure yet... My previous keyboard was the oldschool wired Mac keyboard from 2010
The keys are now much thinner... traveling time of the keys are almost non-existent...
Ah
But I guess I'll get used to it
Yeah, I'm very fussy over my keyboards - I like good travel and feel
I really loved the old version
but they are harder to get these days as it seems
I really would love a mechanic keyboard with blue switches, but my wife does not agree

๐
I touch type, at speed. I'm banned from mechanical keyboards in the office ๐
i got in trouble once in highschool for typing too fast. that was a pretty great day

If anyone is using Nest products, seems like they are experiencing a big outage. Can't see my doorbell. Damn Cloud ๐
so 1 is a huge outage?
Nest is down.... I am having issues connecting to it too.
The App won't work, HA can't connect to it, and It won't let you log into their developer's web site too.
yeah definitely down for me too
mine is up
cam and doorbell is up
@last plaza call support with a heavy indian accent ๐

call and tell them you are the prince of nigeria working for microsoft and offer to fix the problem for them

looks like it is up now
My NEST app is offline for android, for what it;s worth
yes - app still shows offline... I can log into the web site now
Do you know if the device would still obey the NEST schedule?
Cause I shut my AC off half an hour ago for peak usage. lol
my app and everything is still up
Can you go and login here? https://console.developers.nest.com/products
It's back up for me now
The app still shows offline for me.
where do you find all that crazy stuff? LOL
๐
@last plaza Do you by any chance use Ubiquiti Unifi products?
lmao
@rugged bobcat I only have one PoE Switch from ubiquity
@dry cairn that's the mountain from GoT...
@last plaza I was reading that the Unifi controller might interfere with MQTT which would interfere with your Life360 component
@dry cairn finally home
@dry cairn the docs for the controller and hass running on the same machine say it might.
anyone here play HQ on your cell?
impossible
@dry cairn its in the docs if running software controller .... must be internal ports
i'm running my controller on my ha machine for more then a year ....you'd think i would have noticed
software or hardware
?
you have the actual controller ...not a software version
i know i have awesome friends
@dry cairn So you have the controller installed on the same machine as hass and haven't had any issues with MQTT?
nope
what are people's preference when turning off a group of lights and switches? do you
A) call a script and list the lights individually in the script
B) call a group and create a list of lights and switches in the group
C) other?
Interesting. I was planning on installing it on my NUC with hass until I read the docs
I guess I may try it now
whatever works for you
@wraith temple you can create a group and turn off with one service call but no there is really no preferred way.... i tend to keep separate myself
ok thanks folks - wondered if there was any benefit i was missing - everytime I add a new switch or light, it needs to be manually added to either group or script. I guess the only only plus with a group is you can turn it on OR off
whereas a script you would have to call the 'off switch script'
yep it really comes down to your thinking... do you think of them as a group or... do you think of the function first.... i think of the fuction and would rather list there
very logical - ok - good to sanity check (just going through the process of cleaning things up - mostly deleting yaml files from projects that never took off lol)
I use both approaches personally. There are times I want to operate on all the things, and there are times I want to operate on them individually
I did not realise how much a bad switch can affect network proformance
thats unheard of ๐ฎ
well, I mean, it was affecting devices that where not connected to it too, replaced it with a mannaged switch now
So I got my Ubiquiti stuff setup and running, but now when I try to connect to hass it takes me to the sign in page for Unifi. I am using duckdns if that makes any difference. Anyone have any ideas?
You forwarded port 443 to Hass?
@clever mortar yea...forgot to re-add that part. ๐คฆ
I may have made the same mistake myself before, hence why I recognised the problem
๐ I'm praying here...
Begging god
not that I'm a believer but today... I pray, pray and pray
Please dear god, help us
well its gonna turn from github to shithub and pretty sure if microsoft wants it they get it
greed is king
everybody wants money and lots of it
and microsoft has more money then god
and that guy is gonna drive a nice maserati soon
i'm not too pessimistic yet
new MS is good
the PM in charge of win10, not so much
but they do lots of other good things
their business model is grab what you can give nothing back
@dry cairn Do you know if there is a way to block devices from just internet and not the local network on Unifi?
@dry cairn that was their business when windows was king at Microsoft, it seems now that windows throne has been taken azure after Linux gained the server market place as its own and the need for VM servers grew, due to the need for Linux their azure has been a lot more friendly to open source, the behaviour of Microsoft depends on what part of the company is king of the company
yet they steal all your information and harvest your behavior ...do you think that ethically correct? you pay for the sw then you get spied on and shown ads they get paid for and you can t turn some of the spying off
your machine is your machine its none of their business what you do with it
The windows division still act like dicks, yes, but the current ruling section control the company
so they are dicks too since you just said they are ruling over the windows devision
i'm not sure where you going with this but you not defending em
quiet the oposite
@rugged bobcat wondering the same thing.

Wait... are we moving to GitLab for everything or just the hassio addons?
I think it would be worth a look to move all of HASS to GL. Pretty great service they have over there. Also, the migration seems pretty easy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOXuOg9tQI&t=4s
Migrate from GitHub to GitLab In this video, we look at the process for migrating projects from GitHub to GitLab. For more information and detailed instructi...
Mine is already in the process of migrating over.. no thanks Micro$uck
So does this mean the community addons and repo will be moving or is @junior forge maintaining both?
@eager trench Don't worry...
The community add-ons are already on GitLab for a month or so
and everything is mirrored
nobody noticed ๐
so it works like a charm
nothing changes
I just looked on gitlab
So they will remain mirrored or should i config for new repo?
You don't have to do anything
nothing changes
it is already like so..
GitHub just stays in place and can be used
in the background GitLab picks up everything and builds the add-ons
something the user doesn't notice and doesn't have to care about
Ok thanks...
to be clear, this is only for the Community Add-ons Project.
Actually I've mentioned it in every add-ons release past month
๐
Haha
yeah and besides that.. .nothing changes in the way the user uses it
Fair enough.... if I changed the repo Iโd need to reinstall addons and reconfigure.. but if no need then I wonโt worry
Will the GitHub sale be that bad?
Should we migrate our stuff to something like GitLab now?
dunno
The issue with microsoft and github is that they're almost guaranteed to integrate it with things like teams and linkedin, and probably flood the pages with ads
they don't exactly have the strongest background in "usable" source code management either
@light trout Bitbucket โค
Tried that some time ago, did not like it :/
I use it and it works fine for me but I do not have it public
is anyone going to watch the apple event?
lol
New Apple tvOS will have support for Creston and Control4 control. Wonder if the API will be documented or if it can be reverse engineered and what all it will support
On the microsoft aqusition of git hub, there is a lot of FUD coming from the opensource side.
One major agument i have seen is the distruction of skype, but there is an issue, they are only giving examples of Balmer Acquisition, Balmer was a ahole, and would fully absorb and canabibleis aquired companies, Now if we look at recent aquistions of Mojang and Linkedin, One major diffrence is that microsoft has allowed these 2 companys to operate fully indipendently of main microsoft only going as far as intergrating there products(like xbox accounts and allowing you to use linkedin to sign in and link with microsoft certifcations).
annother argument is that microsoft will treat users as the product becuse they think github has no profit making part, yes they do, and one source quotes and estemates that github made $140m in 2016, and now with companys trusting it as it is a microsoft company i expect enterprise subscriptions will rise
anyone in Japan using this yet?
https://gatebox.ai/livingwithproject/
Lol the Microsoft effect ๐
i like how they show now all the paid plans on github with a tiny ass link to the free one
i just deleted my account
first thing it said you will no longer be billed ๐
i feel like this is just a big anti-microsoft movement
which i don't get
statistically microsoft needs a year since they bought a product
to destroy it
so there's a year more of github
i doubt they can get a lot of data out of people's github profiles
@dry cairn they dont need to mine users data for money, github have allways sold the paid plans and i have a feeling that microsoft willl get rid of Visual Studio Team Services and just direct clients towards the github paid plans
oh joy my onkyo reciever has now become a brick after todays firmware update
yea thats waht im attempting to do
calling htem did no good really though ๐ฆ
it keeps halting at 70% and now no audio comes out of it
first time the receiver tried it and froze during the download, and now i tried using usb and it still errors
I just tried to downgrade it and it got to 71% and failed lol
i assume you rebooted it already
well make sure the file is good
change the flash out
well if i had a pic of the flash chip we can find out
lol i just tried to downgrade to an even older version and it failed at 74% wtf
if i get around to opening this thing up ill send you a pic @dry cairn but im hitting the fuck it wall quick lol
look for a really old version which has a smaller file size
yea im goign to back to when they introduced dts:x in a firmware update
if you get sick of it box it up and send it over i shall give it hart surgery
haha ok
any recommendations for a replacement? i hear good things about denon
i need a 7 channel that can do hdr and atmos/dts:x
@dry cairn had a brain fart and it worked .... had to use same broker ip but diff client ID
@dry cairn always on to something....found one that made it to 90% for DSP writing lol lets see if the last 2 will make it to 100% and complete the additional writing lol
๐
I like Denon
well started looking at Denons then found a THX certified onkyo lol for similar price
that might actually pair really well with my new Klipsch speakers too
Do they still make dumb onkyos, the one I have still works well, although due to it being from late 2010 I think it doesn't support 4k
Has anyone had any luck getting the Ubiquiti component setup to show all the devices connected to it in hass?
hey beauties , just a rough estimation , every how often is HA known to release an official update?
@rugged bobcat I have the unifi WAP component set up and adds all the devices connected to the network.
@pliant forge I got it working. I didn't have the verify_ssl: false in the config so it was refusing the login. Thanks.

Thanks @clever mortar.
Need to DIM group of lights only if its state is "ON". I have seen couple of different ways to achieve this on the forums, like using DataTemplate, For Loops, and even python. But it seems too much for such a simple scenario, let me know if there are other clean alternatives. I have seen somewhere NodeRed can handle this more eloquently.
@steady hound You should read the channel descriptions ๐

masochistic I was referring to this in the message from jackjohnsonuk, I wasn't aiming it at anyone particularly in here, I do know a few people who are masochistic in a lot of communitys and you stumble across a lot of them in forms. Dear myQ User,
We experienced an electrical outage today that affected our myQ servers. We have identified and corrected the root cause, and are currently restoring service. For updates, visit www.chamberlain.com/support.
Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience, but rest assured that at no time during the outage has any data been compromised.
Thank you for your patience while this issue is being resolved.
The myQ Team
no data was compromised
no shit how you gonna get compromised if you don t have power to the servers
lol
cmon the stupidity in this mail is beyond funny
here is what rally happened
some stoner in the datacenter tripped over the power cord and identified the root cause which was a unplugged cable and plugged it back in
haha either that or the AC didnt come on fast enough ๐
they said power outage
Does this work?
absolutely
@dry cairn lol - everyone who is compromised never admit that they lost customer's data initially. You will learn about the breach later in the news... Why in the world your garage door status be maintained on their web site?
๐คท
I wouldn't go with myQ if I need their servers to be up and running all the time for me to open my garage
app open and close
ah! remote open/close?
still got rf buttons and the wall button
cool... my garage door uses 380 some frequency.. I should try to capture the code and see if I can use my RF transiever for that

If I was REALLY interested in screwing with things I'd have a script that randomized what they did on April 1st...
but that would be way more time than its worth just to have a fun joke..
no it would not.... would be too damn funny
are those with lutron caseta pro or the regular bridge? @midnight adder
Pro
You need the pro bridge to have the remote work right.
At least for my complicated setup.
I have the pro bridge also. Do you use a custom component for the bridge?
Yes. Hold
alright well you are the only one that I have found that is running a similar setup to me
That makes the remotes into sensors, which is crucial.
I'm going to be messing with some urethane for a while, so forgive me if I'm slow to respond. That is something I don't want on my Pixel XL...
my Denon home theater amp died... Checking a few used options and found a Denon X2000 and a Pioneer VSX-922 close by... Anyone have experience with either Denon or Pioneer integration with Hass? Can I use Hass to turn them on etc?
3 days to the world cup so I need something pretty quick, lol
@orchid rose damn that sucks i literally had that happen to me last week for my onkyo ๐ฆ i ended up getting a replacement onkyo lol
my onkyo allows me to turn it on let me check the denon docs
looks very similar in terms of integration
cool, I thought it should work as long as they have some network thing
mine didn't, but can't find a cheap old one atm for sale
yea on mine i need to leave network standby on but I can turn it on and switch inputs etc..
if u r that worried though
Harmony will work on any receiver
I mainly use Harmony here
ofc, I have a IR emitter I used with the current one
just thought I might as well get one that integrates properly with Hass as well, but I guess turning on and off etc is something these things will do
i can control the volume on mine as well with the hass integration
I have amps from the 70s that still work fine so it's a bit annoying that this gave up so soon. 2010 model isn't exactly new but it's not that old... Just died while idle between Saturday and Sunday
my amp was a 2014 and teh hdmi board fried during a firmware update
luckily had 6 months left in warranty lol
so looking at the code it seems like it does support turning on/off, setting volume and sources
even previous and next track
denon? What about Pioneer?
I opened mine up to see if I can see anything wrong with it, but nothing I could see with my very limited knowledge of electronics. Checked the fuses and they seem fine but just no power at all...
ok this made me laugh a lil
Please note, however, that the more recent Pioneer models work with Onkyo platform instead.
are they the same company now?
hmm, maybe ๐
that's good enough for me
changing track etc won't really help as I'm not planning on using it as a player. Already have a Chromecast for that anyway
ah yea
unless u do upward firing
i was really lucky and the house i bought had ceiling speakers perfectly positioned
which prolly isn't as good as the real thing
heard an atmos setup in a local store and it did sound pretty cool. Was actually surprised as I thought it would be just a gimmick
yea its definitely not gimmicky
i watched a special on how they engineered it, its pretty awesome
moving from channel based audio to object based makes a huge difference
@pliant forge to format the code on your mobile device, tap and hold on the single quote. It gives you an option to select backtick. ๐
object based used to be a thing in gaming a bit over a decade ago but it's been downhill since
OpenAL was pretty fantastic compared to what the 7.1 sounds are in today's games... Hopefully atmos will bring some life to that as well but I have my doubts as people are more keen on buying soundbars than proper audio
ive also seen dolby atmos for headphones gain steam
Does anyone know how the @midnight adderdit bot in the #371340912078356502 channel is setup?
@lavish smelt AFAIK it uses web hooks... Dale configured it on our discord server

Anyone having issues with the iOS app? nah plex does a pretty good job of seprating subs and video when optimizing ๐
I wish there was a Mylarr
yea the problem with plex though is that it relies on teh language of the video/audio stream to have the language set
ok ....you got me curious lol
Mylar would be great if it worked better lol
its based on Comics
LazyLibrarian is aiite
all my video is eng
yea but inside the mkv im referring to
sometimes an upload is set to unknown and thats when plex will fail otherwise its pretty spot on
plex will seperate every sub out into a file
even embedded?
yup insdie the mkv
yep it gets em out unless some jackass added it to the actual video
ah yea the hard coded ones
yeah
so optimize on same as video and very slow and off the sub comes ๐
haha yea ive had to use mkvtoolnix before to change mkv's....like some movies come with like 10 different languages and its like dude i only need one lol
yeah i need none
@trail crag its nice to see that mylar is still being updated today too even though its not as great as the other tools based off sonarr
yeah he's still plugging away at it which is cool...but anything based on headphones is feeling old and clunky now
headphones was cool
Ive been messing with lidarr lately seems to be pretty chill

Hey! Any tips on keeping your full automation setup organised? I have a raspberry pi running red node and HA and i'm already having trouble keeping track of anything.
Is it possible to keep it in a single github repo in some way?
New here, so didn't know if this was HA related enough for general
is red node the russian knockoff of node red?
Haha, that's Node Red

I'd ask in #node-red-archived if they've any advice for managing the node red config

a somewhat unrelated question to HASS (but hey this is #the-water-cooler) - is anyone into software metrics? and if yes, does he/she have to suggest a good tool for specifically measuring coupling in Javascript?
Does anyone have hassio in a docker-compose.yaml file and mind sharing there config?
I mean mind sharing there compose file
why hassio and not just normal home assistant container? @sharp heath
because a container in a container has to be better

seen both of those before.. I love the idea of Fujitsu getting drunk and debunking all the apple myth's
That's how my last couple of Dell laptops have done it
I can however count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've used a network cable in my own laptop over the last couple of years
Fujitsu's solution is however way better than the dongle hell that is so many brands
My laptop is always in my room when im home on my desk, connected to ethernet so i still need it
Also get mutch better stream proformance over wired
Oh, agreed, but it's pretty rare that my own laptop gets used near a cable
Its also quite useful when setting up Pi's and fixing stuff when i broke the wifi, also portable iPerf
anyone brew there own beer?
Is anyone here with a US English Google Home seeing the continued conversations option yet?
@uneven cobalt not yet here ๐ฆ
@shy comet Ok, I am in Canada but have mine set to US English so I am hoping I will see the option. Works for most other geo restricted home options. It seems like we have a lot of the same home assistant issues and google feature requests lately.... lol
haha for sure lol
I wonder if it will show up along with the new UI for the assistant

anyone here an android user and also have Ring?
@rancid lance worth it, looking at getting into it, but don't want to bother with a starter kit if it's more expensive and less tasty than shop brought
hmm might have to have a look then at getting a starter kit.. do you have thousands of quid worth of equipment, or just a bucket and a jug?
the trick to making good beer is a sterile environment when brewing
and it all depends on what type of beer you want to make also
i love IPA and DIPA
so for me its easy
its worse if you wanna make lager or some shit like that
clean good buckets and watch temperatures etc when brewing
Yeah, I'm an IPA, APA and DIPA guys so sounds promising
@shy comet I just received the updated Google assistant and have the continued conversation option!
nice! nothing here yet hopefully ill get it soon
Continued conversations work exactly like with alexa
nice so the timeout is like 3-5 seconds? before it stops listening?
Sometthing like that. And stops if you say thanks
ok continued convos just showed up.....new google assistant UI did not yet lol
do u have to enable it somewhere?
US English only, and in the settings for Google Assistant on your device
anyone a BBQ Pitmaster, or wanabee here?
Does someone know an cheap hosting that supports python websites?
Can anyone recommend a website or software to draw out ciruit diagrams?
@maiden estuary huge wannabe pitmaster right here -
@midnight adder - look at fritzing, that's a good start for circuit diagrams...
also what do you cook on?
I've just started and looking for any great recipes
๐
I have an offset smoker as I like the low and slow method - but I am looking to move back to a kettle grill.
Get yourself a nice pork rib, make some bbq sauce ( i like a carolina gold ), peel off the membrane from the ribs and smother it, add in a litle sprinkle of brown sugar, put it in a foil tray and throw it in. Low and SLow. Keep brushing it down with more sauce. You serve that with some BBQ Beans - Beans, Br Sugar, BBQ sauce, Chillis and chopped onion and you drink it with beer.
Dont do a typical UK BBQ of throwing sausages, burgers, chops, wings, thigh, all on and making a feast of it. Pick a dish and cook it well.
You also have to grow a long beard and put on an american accent - it adds to the flavour.
@midnight adder 10-4 ๐ I brought a traeger yesterday for low and slow.. still love my weber kettle though. yes we tend to try and cook at least one of ever member of the farm yard over here ๐
I've got the ribs and just about to sauce it up now.. as for the beard.. well I cant remember where I put my razor so it's coming ๐
@maiden estuary gotta look the part or the food just aint right
