anyone using chromecast with huawei phone ?
Hmm, I need to look at twitches new way of being notifyed of stream as i think home assistant still uses the polling method
@hexed herald Honor 8
@midnight adder Diffrence is that 8 years ago the arch wiki wasnt very good, its more to do with how the kernel manages gplv2 complience
Its a optimus laptop right
you could just use the intel graphics
yeah
What is your laptop anyway
Hmm, i wonder if asus are doing something, i have a optimus laptop and kind of got it working quite well
@midnight adder Try setting this up https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee
Well, its not realy a bug
Ohh, they still have that stupid issue with wayland on ubuntu
@midnight adder I know the issue you are on about
Does gdm start for you?
@midnight adder Here is how disable it for gdm https://askubuntu.com/questions/975094/how-to-disable-wayland-in-17-10-in-gdm3-login-screen/975188
everyone in the linux world has target fixation on a WIP display sever called wayland that is quite bashful and expects GPU vendors to just do what they say
and becuse of the target fixation eveyone has enabled it by defult
Make it use x11
Nah, apple has their own mess
@midnight adder you good at docker? (your icon)
generic question really
if https://hub.docker.com/r/homeassistant/home-assistant/ should respect environment variables PUID & PGID?
ok, cheers bro
@midnight adder that clears things up really, NO then, haha, thank you
just keep running, keeeeeeeeep running π
de koding some python so that i can update the project the twitch component depends on
Is there a ublock list
Ah, found one https://github.com/hoshsadiq/adblock-nocoin-list
I find watching youtube does it too
yep
6.1c in bristol
I was going to say its not that nice, but not a lot of citys are, the south is over touristy(Cornwall, London) the north is quite nice out side of the citys, especily yorkshire
Just always have a rain plan, Its doesnt rain as much as the sterotype says it does but it will rain at some point in a week
@midnight adder Wales is very nice the north has some nice mountins, the south is mostly ex-mining towns, although there is a nice Museum called big pit https://museum.wales/bigpit/
they closed the doctor who experince in cardiff, it was like a limited thing
I dont see why not
@midnight adder https://www.gov.uk/driving-nongb-licence
Yeah, cars(Hire cars)
Depends where you are, i see more fords feastas than golfs
Oh, android/apple pay, contactless and chip and pin is nearly everywhere here
@midnight adder Where in Canada? I need to know where NOT to go if I ever visit. -32 C is too damn cold!
makes mentall note. Never, ever go to Canada in the winter
Yesterday I was in shorts and a t-shirt. Probably gonna do the same today if I ever get moving
High today is supposed to be 20C
San Antonio, Texas
I lived up there for a while
Lived there too lol
Basically I have lived in every major city in Texas except El Paso
LOL
Gotta love those Texas girls!
@midnight adder There is someone in my church who will only drive a ka
they dont make them anymore iirc @midnight adder
they have the brand still, but it is larger https://www.ford.co.uk/cars/ka-plus?vehicleNavCategory=small cars
Its more like a feasta now
I want a car with this in https://www.automotivelinux.org/
so far it is only in one toyota
its this car https://www.toyota.com/camry/
@midnight adder Yep, when i finaly learn to drive i would probably get a toyota or any decent eletric car on the market or do my own conversion
@midnight adder Now i wonder why one of the most popular manufaturer in the US is toyota, i think its toyota
I pesonaly like mazda
I look at BMW's and the other german cars and go, ooh, they are nice, but they are basicly the apples of the car world
Yeah
One good thing about eletric cars is that they are basicly automatic without the problems of automatics
and due to my spld it means it is easyer for me to learn
Im dyspraxi though, moter control(Hand eye cordination isnt the best) isnt my strong point
I am tempted to get a gaming stearing wheel with shifter to practice on, totaly not to play racing games
But then again, i dont want to drive a comustion engine car, and manual electrics dont exisit yet, and if they do they will the shift by wire
I kinda want to convert a car
@midnight adder Most of the conversion kits a modular, so you could replace it with better stuff
Raspberry pi
I would probably make there still be a canbus in the car
this person converted a mini http://evmini.ca/
It looks like he kind of did
yep
or ones with dead batterys
A lot of the early ones used lead acid batterys and are mostly dead now
yep

anyone here use rsnapshot that could give me a quick crash course or point me in the direction of a good blogpost / video?
@fading ice hit @clever mortar up he has a good post.... but i dont know the url
@dull chasm awesome, thanks!
he is on the over the pond time so you will see him early in the am
sounds good, I'll ping him in the morning
here is @clever mortar 's blog... https://sgrudadh.blogspot.co.uk/ It is right on his repo @fading ice
π¨
I remember when I was younger a day where the trains didn't run, because the diesel was frozen, and even when they lit fires under the trains to thaw it, all the wheels were frozen to the tracks so they couldn't actually move anyway
More "grey beard engineer" style I think
They knew there was nothing that'd catch fire/melt, and they'd nothing to lose
In today's culture, there's no way it'd fly
Ah, so save money - go nowhere, thereby saving even more money?
Cracking plan, until you get fired π
Cold diesel engines aren't happy sounding
there probably still gel in there too
Winter kit on cars is handy, even in warmer climes than Canada
Ah
I know a few folks who swear by theirs
Yeah, but then Canada does get it "proper cold" during the winter
That's closing in on the point where it doesn't matter if you're talking imperial or metric any more π
Yeah. My friend talked about the differences in approach too with the various groups. Said you could spot the natives because they were the ones comfortably wandering around in shorts and t-shirts at sub-freezing temperatures
sure
Thanks
what printer do you have @dry cairn ?
cool
i went for the prusa because it seems to be a nice balance between features, reliability, and still being able to upgrade it
that's a weird looking printer π
We'll see if we can get image posting turned back on for everybody in #the-water-cooler
\o/
It was getting a bit out of hand in the support channels, with newbies posting image walls
yeah
good choice
Same as link expansion being turned off for everybody
ah now that is nice
what do you use to design parts, @dry cairn ?
is that web based, or a windows app?
web
ok
@clever mortar I hear you use rsnapshot and might have a good blogpost / video to point to for me to get started?
@midnight adder you mentioned earlier that you stopped buying server cases. How do you keepβem cool? If cooling is not a problem, do we really need them?
Ok.. I was looking at dell power edge servers- pretty sleek. If I can get a 12U, that would be more than enough for me to begin with. The servers are comparable
The 12U racks are around $100 on Amazon. Not sure of the quality
I want to set up server farm at home. I have been debating whether to buy NUC, desktop/server tower or rack servers.
Have plenty of laptops and donβt want to buy them.
I never bought any used stuff before. Always worried about quality. The government auction sites have huge racks and I want something small.
Ok...
For $1400, I can get a dell power edge with 46GB memory and 500gb disc. Form factor is an issue, but they are servers, they will be in the basement anyway.
Really? Use a lot of power?
DDR4
North America
Just went on to dell site. I think it is UDImm
Yes. USD
I donβt know. Never did that before π
I typically go over to Micro Center to get parts if something needs replaced.
Yes. Xeon processor and ECC UDIMM memory
Since you guys are talking server hardware, can I get your input on which CPU to use? I have both in 2 older servers, but not sure which I should make my primary until I can upgrade the hardware: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-1603-vs-Intel-Core-i7-920
this is what I was looking at http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/servers-storage-and-networking/poweredge-r230-rack-server/spd/poweredge-r230/pe_r230_1346_a @midnight adder
@fading ice sorry - I am not the person you want to get hardware advise from π
lol, fair enough - any input @midnight adder ?
Just wasn't sure if I should consider the number of threads or not
Xeon only has 4 here
@clever mortar what server do you run?
ok
ASRock Rack E3C236D2I with a Xeon E3-1240 v5 in a Silverstone DS380 case
ECC RAM, ZFS for the file systems, running FreeBSD 11
I did replace all the fans, because they were noisy, with Noctua ones. The result is something pretty low noise, small footprint, but lots of grunt when I need it
@midnight adder which ones are you looking at?
ok... cool
4x means quadcore I assume?
thank you..... let me go through them...
Silverstone DS380 is really nice, but a PITA to work with
@clever mortar that DS380 looks pretty!
It is, and it has a hot swap back plane (and a real one, with capacitors and stuff, unlike Lian-Li and others)
But, there's about next to no spare space inside before you cable it all up. Once it's cabled up it's a challenge to work with.
Be prepared for much cursing and scraped skin
I'm trying to find a micro ATX case for sub $200 that has lots of hot swaps - any brand suggestions?
DS380 is ATX?
Micro ATX I think
site says ITX
Mini ITX
otherwise it IS a nice case π
You can get some great motherboards that fit though
I'm running a Xeon in mine π
so this might be a dumb question - those 2 processors I sent earlier, how can I tell if they have the same socket? i.e., could I put the i7 CPU in the motherboard that the Xeon is on right now?
where would I find that out?
Also, check the manufacturer's site for the motherboard
Some might require a particular board or firmware revision for some chips
different socket support on ark.intel i guess means they can't be switched?
Like generally speaking it's best to put diesel in a diesel engine, and petrol/gas in a petrol/gas engine π
guess i'll just stick with the xeon then
<@&330946878646517761> Have picture posting been disabled?
I think so. π¦
Oh π¦ any particular reason?
I think there was discussion about the autoexpansion being distracting for some. (not me) . So it was agreed to restrict that. The side result is no pictures.
Ah
I'm indifferent to the decision.
I just wanted to know if the problem was on my end ^^ It's stupid that discord link those features (They should just let ppl post pictures with a small expand button)
I'm going to ask if it's possible to enable it generically in here, since in #the-water-cooler nobody cares if you scream π
π±
IMO images were only a problem in the support channels, with people posting their code or errors as images, making it hard to help them - it's a bit sledgehammer to crack a nut, but it was an annoying nut π
Didn't want my iBeacons to run out of battery π https://i.imgur.com/inNCMLp.jpg
@heady drift my wife and I got new Dell i7 laptops this year. So sweeeeeeeeet
Oops. Last year
my current work laptop is a 2016(?) Lenovo X1 Carbon i7, 16GB of RAM, Ubuntu. I love thinkpads. For a while I was stuck on macbook pros, and this one is so much better and lighter.
but, there are no screws on it. Can't take it apart. No upgradability.
I have an Ubuntu vm on mine but decided to stick with win 10 for world of Warcraft even though I don't play anymore. Lol
I have a thinkpad T400 from 2010 that I put more RAM and an SSD in, and it was awesome until one of my kids (who still refuses to fess up) stepped on the screen.
so now it's a server.
heh
my WoW computer is my desktop
dual boot win10/Linux
We got these last March and upgraded to 16 GB ram. Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6 Inch FHD Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 8 GB SSD) NVIDIA Gaming GeForce GTX 960M https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYZ0J6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_vepwAbHP7HW2T
nice
Only desktop in the house is my headless server
Got it on Amazon warehouse deals about 4 or 5 years ago
Also a Dell but had to replace motherboard a couple of years ago with a gigabyte board
we have 4 component built desktops - mine, my two older sons and a server in the basement which was my previous desktop.
the kids had fun building their own computers from components and picking out the parts
and they were both more affordable and more durable than laptops
I've thought about building one again but I really like the portability of a laptop. Might just get a monitor and wireless keyboard to attach to laptop when home
yeah. I get a laptop from work, so I let them spend the money and I get all the portable computing I want.
it helps that I'm in DevOps, so I need complete control over my computer and a decent system to do my job.
so I can really do what I want with it once they buy it
eg. I don't have to explain to the IT department why I'm installing linux or whatever.
I could try to explain to upper management that I need a laptop to sell furniture, but something tells me they won't go for it
Actually, my thinkpad with a docking station will drive a pair of 1600p external displays over displayport
it's practically a desktop when I plug it in
lots of USB ports, two monitors, gigabit ethernet, etc.
if your computer has USB-C, the USB-C docking stations are pretty great
drive everything over a single cable. Sit down at a desk and be able to spread out with a real keyboard, mouse and monitor.
No C, just 3
does it have a dell docking port on the bottom?
that might be only on the latitudes.
I mean, not everyone needs dual monitors, and you've got HDMI out and USB3
anyone using the google assistant SDK on a pi?
Gah, i cant get this luftdaten thing to connect
@heady drift USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C w/ ThunderboltBT3Β . Is that what you meant by type c?
yes
tbh i mostly picked it because it has a mini displayport instead of a full-sized one and i already had mini cables
USB type-C β€
@wraith vale nice one
WTF Google: https://developers.google.com/actions/smarthome/guides/refrigerator Why are action.devices.traits.OnOff a recommended trait for a REFRIGERATOR?!?
Who would EVER want to turn in off?
turn the key off?
@toxic violet the inside lights
build ya a igloo park inside ...wont get below 32 LOL π
man i am messing with ya... I have no idea about places that cold... I do know in extremme winter survial training in perdu bay alaska we built a igloo and it got no colder than 32 because if i rem right thats the coldest ice will get
My weather view is looking good https://imgur.com/a/LfmW5
the metoffice one needs some improvements, what do the other weather platforms look like
@midnight adder the request has been put forward, just waiting to hear back
Check Amazon for SIM cards. I bought T-Mobile ones there for just a couple of bucks, IIRC.
Anyone have intresting clocks, im trying to find a good one
Can someone post a link or picture to test permissions
Ok thanks
@tidal bronze π
π
What's a good 3d printer to buy for printing enclosures?
https://health.nokia.com/nl/en/sleep IFTTT when you are in or out of bed, thats looks like a nice feature
@midnight adder what are you doing on the EC2
Some people have found that the meltdown fix caused prices to rise due to extended usage, but this doesn't seem to be the case here
@violet brook looks like it wont work with my bed
Unlees they have an adapter for slatted beds
I've been emailing with the Director of Engineering at Fullpower about an API for the Simmons SLeeptracker. Not open as of yet but they are working on it. https://www.beautyrest.com/Sleeptracker
I kind of want a DIY one that only detect that i am in bed
Also probably won't work with your slatted bed though
That should be easy with a pressure sensor and an esp8266
Yeah
Although some of the slats in the bed have broken so i was thinking about putting a bit of wood over it
Any Network Guys/Gals in the house? I have 2 APs for the house. Should they be set to different channels or the same channel? (working on the 2.4GHZ right now.)
In most cases set to auto they will decide based on the other WiFi connections around you to allow for a better connection
Yeah .. I nornall have that but I've seen my one AP pick channel 10 as the 2.4 whcih I've read is a no no.
I thought they should optimally be 1,6, or 11.
Different
1, 6, or 11 - manually
After checking what other channels are in use and overlapping
(then repeat regularly as badly designed devices stop your network)
@clever mortar - What do you think? https://i.imgur.com/e42OrAw.png
Oh .. auto expand is back. π
Do a site scan
If everything is low, go 1 and 11, (or 1 and 6, or 6 and 11)
Not on 2.4
Leave it alone there
Not on 2.4
On 5 GHz, yeah I normally go for wider channels
@tidal bronze No.. trying to be pro-active .. and I'm bored.
lol
@clever mortar Ok.. thanks.
I have them seperate as well. Carlo-AP and Carlo-Fast respectively.
Not sure what you are asking @tidal bronze
Max speed on AC for LAN and WAN
Geez... how would I know?
I'm sure one more sentance will clear it up for me. π
maybe two
Run server on your hass machine if it's on gigabit and test from WLAN devices
@tidal bronze What's a typical test CLI?
LAN 980 WLAN 330+
Look what I found : https://hub.docker.com/r/networkstatic/iperf3/
There you go
[ 4] 0.00-10.00 sec 1.07 GBytes 921 Mbits/sec sender
[ 4] 0.00-10.00 sec 1.07 GBytes 921 Mbits/sec receiver```
Why is iperf3 in a docker
@tidal bronze Oh now.. haha.. That's right.. that's my Laptop at 5g.
Good point.. let me switch networks and see what's up..
@trim cliff I guess you have your Sunday, cutout for you. Not boring anymore right?
π
WHAT A SUPER COOL TOOL @tidal bronze ! Thanks for that piece of knowledge. Walking the property doing speedtests from iPhone to docker container.. awesome!
iperf and co are great for working out where your network is fscked
Yeah .. It's pretty awesome.
anyone else have a LEDE router, how have you gotten your node mcus to play nice with it, mine keep disconnecting becuse of inactivity
Actualy i am using the internal antenna as it seems to mess with them less
Its exactly what i came here for π what sensor and what unit do you use for that?
Google luftdaten(unless you speak German use google chrome to look at the site), the sensor in use is the sds011 @midnight adder
Oh so its not on your own system im looking for a way to use different contacts and temp measures to be in one page that makes graphs and etc of it.
It doesnt have to have any logic behind that so if temp rises then switch im just looking for a monitor that shows me info about temps and are some contacts closed or open and so on
@midnight adder just showing the sensors will do that, you have to click on it though, although I have seen a lot of people using another program called graphanda with HA to get nice graphs
Depending on the vendor of your devices, the Chinese govt. can too ;-P
Got a spare raspberry pi 1. any suggestions for a project i should use it for?
@amber bramble Pi.Hole?
@trim cliff thought about it, but doesn't it require a more powerful system?
a curious question ....why pihole for dhcp and not router
i use pi hole also and its awesome for a dns server for ads
Pi hole for DHCP so I can set reservations for everything .. my router puked after about 25 reservations.
plus the interface for Pihole was/is better.
ok... makes sense... i got 40 plus reservations on mine an its fine
I have the stupid cable modem router.. it's garbage for everythign but a bridge.
why was google assistant and even alexa device customizations moved from customize to the core element? thats so seriously retarded, how does one customize elements inside packages now?
@worn jasper I would have said the other way round. I hate using customize. It is far easier to have the attributes close to the entity itself.
so how do i customize that then?
google_assistant:
entity_config:
switch.kitchen:
expose: false
alias: roof lights
name: nice lights
type: light
if i have to put that into every single package to change the name of something thats freaking stupid
why would you change it in every package
it is only required where you are defining the assistant
because i want my entities contained into their own file,e verything affecting the naming of it as well
the logic of changing it tells me that the team wants users to define the files their way
yes....packages are not fully supported
https://github.com/moose51789/home-assistant-config/blob/master/packages/lights/modeling_desk.yaml#L24 example of a switch i've got and i want that google_assistant customization to remain in the fle where its relevant
also totally didn't realize i was in the random channel.... swore i was in general
no worries
IMO removing the customize method was dumb, should be both if anything
maintaining both is too much work and prone to errors
well then i hope that i can plug that chunk of code above into each package to rename my google things etc or i guess i'm never updating again and probably going to start finding a replacement to hass, to many things lately have made me question the direction of the project as is
Interesting
so that thing on the right is a proprietary connection
err, right of that nano
but the older (current?) touch panel just uses regular cable
I think i can still make it work though
its just electrical, right?
just have to plug it in to the correct spots on the nano
although I'm not sure what to do with 3v... because that should be powered.
I don't know, I think the connector is a digital one
But that nano should still work (in theory) with any mechanical switch.
Yes, it will
So as long as the touch panel sends the signal it should be fine.
hey folks, using floorplan - do you have to 'toggle' a switch or can it only turn on?
trying to simply change input select from an icon of amazon tv
- name: remote_buttons
entities:
- switch.xbox
- switch.firetv
- switch.directv_livingroom
action:
domain: switch
service: toggle
then the switch.firetv:
- platform: template
switches:
firetv:
value_template: "{{ is_state('switch.firetv', 'on') }}"
turn_on:
service: input_select.select_option
data:
entity_id: input_select.living_room_tv_select
option: Amazon Tv
[I have a separate off button - so basically just need to:
domain: switch
service: turn_on
however renders the object not clickable in floorplan
@wraith temple i would ask in #general-archived, there are more people in there
@pure vine thanks
Hey guys, just have my first Sonoff Basic flashed with Tasmota and I can see it in HA. My next question would be, is there a way to utilize it with voice commands to Google Home?
@lusty root after setting up the google assistant component, lights, switches, and others within HA will be exposed to the google home app for voice control
@trail crag I have google home and it's recognized in HA. I have some automations that play certain music at the certain time etc
but I am not clear how to send voice commands to turn on/off switches/lights etc
@lusty root you would need to set up the google assistant component. https://home-assistant.io/components/google_assistant/. Basically your own app which pulls in HA devices
I don't understand why I need to setup google assistant if I have actual device that has google assistant?
How does the GH know what devices you have?
So far you have HA recognizing the Google Home as a media player, which is great, but not the same thing
I see what are you saying. Do I still need to setup mic and all that on respberry or I can go without it?
I'm looking at the addon page here
@lusty root heh, nope. That is the addon. you want the component that I linked
the addon turns your pi into a diy google home without all the functionality of a regular google home, and does require mic and speakers. Most do not want it
Yes, it can be confusing.
@lusty root random is supposed to be for all things NOT home assistant, btw. Should move over to hassio channel if you're running it
To resolve that I am going to post this pic of pickled herring
@trail crag Sorry about that and thanks a lot for your help!
Nice
Cords need better color code and channell to run in π
I need a new 24 port and a couple of 8 ports for the other parts of the house
@dull chasm you come and sort that out
amazon do a standalone dash button https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0727NW8HT/ref=amb_link_2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-left-2&pf_rd_r=X2F0EZK2FPPHF5WS6H6F&pf_rd_r=X2F0EZK2FPPHF5WS6H6F&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=d7f325d5-19db-4015-b781-6e2851607d6e&pf_rd_p=d7f325d5-19db-4015-b781-6e2851607d6e&pf_rd_i=10833773031
I'm searching for a standalone wifi thermostat which I can attach to my radiator that works with HA. Something like this: https://www.amazon.de/Eurotronic-Comet-HeizkΓΆrperthermostat-Thermostat-Internetzugang/dp/B00TA5DF2Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1516111001&sr=8-3&keywords=thermostat%2Bwlan&th=1
But as it turns out that thermostat I linked is not yet compatible. Any suggestions?
Anyone familiar with one of these???
no, looks intresting
@last cradle are you able to get a better photos
i cant read the model number
Looked up the part number. Trying to figure out how to turn it into an info display for hass
No touch screen π’
if you could get a driver for the display, probably
Was hoping to not have to do that. Lol
Has audio, sd card and USB. Might make a good photo display thing
Do you have this on you?
Yup. Just ripped it out of it's display a bit ago
Could you get some photos of the OSD, i recognise it
Osd?
On screen display
The menu?
yeah
whats under product info
Im trying to find out if this is using a common chip and someone has written Linux based firmware
@last cradle Actualy, what are those connectors at the top
I think they are for external speakers
That would be awesome
And if someone had and I can use that USB port for a WiFi dongle, I'm in business
Yeah i think they are, i think the usb port is only for software updates
But if there is a Linux firmware out there, then maybe they put the USB port to another use
Been googling model name with firmware and Linux. No results either
Agreed
Should be very simple
But it can boot from USB
Bummer
wheres the display connected?
What is that?
It's one of those ad display players
10.1"
When I get home with it, I'm gonna see if I can find the model number for the display panel so I can order a driver board for it and hook it up to a pi zero maybe
Maybe get a touch overlay for it too, then I will have my main floorplan control panel π
Get off work in about 5 minutes. Woot!
So i brought a usb fan, and amazon keeps suggesting this thing https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01K4GVF30/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1
@pure vine Well there ya go! That should make your life complete!
I keep seeing people moaning about HP laptops, mainly on reddit. yet I've had mine for a few months and bar it not liking sleep it has been fine, im struggling to find fault with it
hello, who can help with problem in nodeMCU-(OpenMQTTGateway)? after boot it's only starting to work if i connecting to the monitor via the com port.
@night stream please ask in #general-archived
See, I'd say a generic NodeMCU question isn't on topic there (or any other channel)
If it was "how do I make it work with HA", yes, but that's more a "it only works if I have a serial cable attached" which has nothing to do with HA
@clever mortar Illd say its #general-archived as i assume he is using it with HA and #general-archived says "AppDaemon, Floorplan, iOS app, Android app, OwnTracks, Locative, Tasker...all about the Home Assistant ecosystem!" the nodeMCU is definatly part of the ecosystem now
π€·
especily if it is a MQTT thing
IMO that's more a generic thing, and he'll likely get more help, sooner, on a dedicated forum
I see this channel of more of a chat channel than a support channel @clever mortar
yes its MQTT with HA
Well, it would be if your nodeMCU booted π
also i have some strange problem that when i restart HA it turning on my rf Relay
i wonder if it is somthing related to configuration
I'd tackle that as a separate issue in #general-archived
Probably you've got an automation that's running at/around startup
yes i have an automation.
im using HA to receive rf remote signal and send another RF signal
i think the gateway receive an MQTT value when HA starts..
AC fans are annoying, they are loud and inconsistant
@clever mortar but you have to sort it out when you break something. Im liking the reddit thread though
Just got this graph off my router, placed a usb fan on it arround about 16:00
whats wrong with the one that Bruh and the other guy got?
welp, I don't think they have boxed 20 amps 5V
nvm it's also 12v
he bought a stepdown

I'm doing it with a RPI instead but the information is excellent
I was wondering.... connect some of the power wires with a jumper wire, it's a bad bad idea, right?
I mean.... the power drives to the leds and for about 10 cm and I need jumper wires to connect stuff
does anyone else troll their family like I do? I just set an automation to play the groundhog day song (I got you babe) with the actual audio from the movie on my daughters google home at 6am everyday. This morning was day 1. Will see how long it takes for her to get annoyed.
im curious what other fun things people have done with HA and home automation
@last plaza Notepad++ way easier to get started with than VSCode.
XD
I'll keep playing around with it, but it didn't do syntax highlighting right off.
(and yes, I installed the MSSQL extention)
Urgh, rebuilding a collection of tex plugins, its long and painful as it doesnt give you all the errors at once
@onyx gorge I set up an automation that notifies me and my wife that the next day is trash day. My message says "Trash day!", hers says "<wife name>'s turn to take out the trash." Haven't done anything else yet...
Lol
I just use a calender for that, i am planning to make an automation to notify everyone in the household when its been windy at night, that tells them to take it out as week keep the recycling in if it is going to be windy
Awesome. Windy outside so go to turn on the outside lights forgetting something chewed them. They short the rcd which apparently covers half the indoor lighting too. Luckily kids donβt wake up to hue lights on everywhere... ha and all hubs seem to be on tgatvsection of circuit too
Still no idea if weβve got fences etc. Loool. Will have to wait til dawn.
wohooo... kinda finished the physical installation of my neopixel LEDS
it was hecka rough
now everything needs to be sealed with 3d printed parts
This thing is cool http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-42731112
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2018/01/good-newsbad-news-in-quest-to-get-meltdown-and-spectre-patched/
What this means is that if you're lucky enough to have a system that is still being supported with firmware updates from its manufacturer...you probably shouldn't install the firmware anyway
The bright side out of all this is that AMD and others are looking good by comparison
Intel are rushing becuse their contempmet has ment they have failed to do anything
Also no one bothered to tell any of the BSD's about this issue, apart from freebsd when it was to late
Well, from my understanding, there were some relatively good reasons for the BSD issue. Various folks refused to sign NDAs, and some developers have previously not so much burned bridges, as nuked them from orbit.
If people were less precious about being able to make everything public, they'd be more likely to get let into secrets π
I feel like this responsable disclosure is doing more harm than good at the moment
It only realy works when your talking to one party
It works fine as long as everybody agrees to the rules, and doesn't refuse to work with the "greater good" than their egos
is it possible to share google home assistant shortcuts with family??
Not the shortcuts, no, they're account specific
bummer... any other way to create custom responses for google home? like I want to ask what is the temp and I want the home to call on a home-assistant script.
maybe ifttt to call the script in home-assistant?
Dialogflow gives you that ability
hmm... have to look into that. is it a component?
Yup
it works with google home?! Man, @clever mortar you are awesome. thank you.
Yup
I gave it a whirl myself, it works π€·
I didn't find I actually needed it though, so stopped playing with it
https://myhome.duckdns.org/api/dialogflow?api_password=HA_PASSWORD is the HA_PASSWORD supposet o be my home-assistant webUI password?
Yeah
okay. ty.
@clever mortar dialog flow works the same way as other actions that require you to say "talk to <service> first, correct?
@onyx gorge yes, I think so
anyone tried using wink set to local ? (instructions warn us away from it) but give the smartthings issues, i'd love to move to 100% local
@edif30#9059 Yes, that's how it works, so slightly annoying
Hello
i need halp
problem with leds you're always afraid you haven't connected them right or shet
when I apply a random rgb color the leds color's break
when I apply blue, it's fine for example
by break I mean there are different colors completely unrelated to the selected one
LOL if I set the exact pixel led I want the color works fine, but if I apply more than 40 leds the color just changes
w00t
What leds are those? which chip? (also is it strip?)
Looks at my 30 to 40 Mb/s link and curses @dry cairn
nono thats megabytes a sec not megabit
Yup, and that's why I'm cursing you
I might one day get 300 Mb/s if I'm lucky. I'm not likely to get 2+ Gb/s
Ah, that I feel less annoyed by π
if it would have been from the outside it would hhave been 10 gigabits lol
I don't have any 10 Gb/s links internally, yet
I don't even have any devices that support it, yet
i guess 270 is the max the spindles can do
lol
I've got a few boxes that regularly handle 30 Gb/s
they simple storage arrays with adaptek sas controllers
You don't need magic, just spindles
its more then enough for my plex server lol
RAID10 is awesome for it, but a good RAID50 setup will do it
And yeah, if you need more than 1 Gb/s for movies, you've got problems (or are hosting them for others)
yeah i'm not going crazy i got 48 spindles in 2 storage arrays
thats enough for a while
π
can someone help me with some CSS? need an element fixed to bottom while scrolling
@oak haven this might give you some idea? https://www.w3schools.com/howto/tryit.asp?filename=tryhow_css_bottom_nav

Does anyone have any experience with these Wemos boards that take an 18650 battery for power?? https://www.ebay.com/itm/WeMos-D1-Esp-Wroom-02-Motherboard-ESP8266-Mini-WiFi-Nodemcu-Module-18650-Battery-/401325861785?hash=item5d70e2ab99
@last cradle no other than ESP circuit need to be put to sleep quite much to have sufficient battery life.
Wooo, just used branches in git
@midnight adder yep, this is on the status page https://status.discordapp.com/incidents/pj6k93rh0yg4
@midnight adder google seem to be acting up a lot, or someone was DDoSing a service hosted on them
Depends on how much traffic there was
And all the wifi stuff fell off the network this morning :P I dont have any sensors online

hi @lost harbor can u get tips on how to implement AWS tts to make ha and rpi3 speak? π
because in the future i gonna use snips (to voice commands) shell i use vlc (as they say) as media player or not? @lost harbor
You could use MPV or Aplay, but VLC is a platform so it is better to use that
so basically i have to install vlc and set ha to speak trough it ?
i will have a speaker to output audio
something like sudo apt-get install vlc-nox
sudo usermod -a -G audio homeassistant
follow that post for general tts. If you want to output sound through snips, use the snips_say service with something like { "text": "Hello"}
does anyone recommend a wireless earbud that can invoke google assistant with touch ?
Hi guys can i add scripts like make a screenshot with my raspberry pi cam when motion detected or something like that?
integrate shellscrips in Homeassistant
does it work in automation or configuration yaml? is there a command?
oh ok sorry i ask there thx
Anyone know what the generic brand for all the smart light switches on amazon is?
I can't seem to find it on alibaba
like that one
Pretty cheap, but I would want to know if there's already alternate firmware for it/etc.
anyone can help with mqtt commands with SONOFF pow with Espurna firmware? i cant get mqtt to work on the sonoff Espurna... im trying with pub message via mosquitto: sudo mosquitto_pub -t /sonoff1/relay/0/ -m /sonoff1/relay/0/set/1
without any luck....what am i missing?(edited)
my configyraion:
- platform: mqtt
name: "sonoff1"
state_topic: "/sonoff1/relay/0"
command_topic: "/sonoff1/relay/0/set"
payload_on: "1"
payload_off: "0"
qos: 0
optimistic: false
retain: false
@night stream you're sending /sonoff1/relay/0/set/1 as value to topic /sonoff1/relay/0/ ?
in your mosquitto_pub example, that is
shouldn't that be mosuitto_pub -t /sonoff1/relay/0/set -m 1 ?
you oibviously doing it wrong

no @dull chasm was looking for a 29$ iphone battery replacement
format your paste
?
use 3 ` around em so they in a box like this
this
wrong not ' but `
you might wanna delete the above and repost it so the indents are there
@B10m#6135 Thanks, the command as you sugested is working, so why isnt it via the conf?my configyraion:
name: "sonoff1"
state_topic: "/sonoff1/relay/0"
command_topic: "/sonoff1/relay/0/set"
payload_on: "1"
payload_off: "0"
qos: 0
optimistic: false
retain: false ```
k cool
π
now lets see
- platform: mqtt
name: Bedroomshelf1
state_topic: 'cmnd/bedroomshelf/POWER1'
command_topic: 'cmnd/bedroomshelf/POWER1'
qos: 1
retain: true
payload_on: 'on'
payload_off: 'off'
optimistic: false
ok i see some differences
my above example works
maybe you wanna try that
mqtt commands works ```mosquitto_pub -t /sonoff1/office/relay/0/set -m 0
what is fx
mqttfx is a program to view your mqtt traffic
i can see it in mosquitto client
switch:
- platform: mqtt
name: bugzapper
state_topic: '/cmnd/sonoff1/power'
command_topic: '/cmnd/sonoff1/power'
qos: 1
retain: true
payload_on: 'on'
payload_off: 'off'
optimistic: false
this is for a normal sonoff to turn on or off
sonoff payload for power is on and off
try it and see if it works for you
i took it from the espurna site https://bitbucket.org/xoseperez/espurna/wiki/HomeAssistant.md
sonoff is not espurna
you run tasmota right
espurna is mainly for ai lights
best one for sonoff is tasmota
another question..if i might..
sure
i made some automation config..
i dont want to see the button in the main gui
you can hide it or you can create another tab
cool
that goes into a file called tabs.yaml in the .homeassistant folder
group: !include tabs.yaml
goes into teh configuration.yaml
before you open that can of worms you need to learn how ha works
for the time beeing you should keep it on the main gui tab
ha ha "can of worms"
add all your devices etc etc
yeah its rather complicated
seems like you new
i assume all your stuff is in the configuration.yaml
a great idea is to put each device and its automations in a seperate file
only thing is you won't be able to use the gui automation editor
which is a whole other can of worms
that thing is just bad atm
i dont use it, gui automation editor
k
if you put
packages: !include_dir_named packages
into teh configuration.yaml you can create a folder called packages in .homeassistant and put all your devices in seperate files
OKk
makes life a lot easier
in that file just add my switches ..?
yeah
same thing
you can put the switch in the file and below the automation
that is one file for 1 device
let me try
exapt for adding the folder in the conf.yamal, how do i tell it to include the file ?
homeassistant\packages\sonoff.yaml
in config.yaml i added packages: !include_dir_named packages
@dry cairn i getting an error... 2018-01-24 10:05:41 ERROR (MainThread) [homeassistant.loader] Unable to find component packages 2018-01-24 10:05:41 ERROR (MainThread) [homeassistant.setup] Setup failed for packages: Component not found.
just added the folder and put your example in it

I managed to remote lock up my hassio setup from colage, family has not noticed yet. :/
For the record I did it by trying to change the port for the web editor because it was not working, and just everything stopped connecting. I have a disk image so it is nbd, but kinda entertaining.
I have 1000 SVG files with 512 height but different width (<512 or >512). I need them all 512x512 centered or even better in 24x24. Can anyone help? I'm talking about font awesome icons for HA
@oak haven Idk if you have node, but give this a try: https://github.com/vieron/svg-resizer
thanks, but the main problem is to get the svg centered. I'll try to create a script, found some similar example code
I think there is a batch action plugin/script for GIMP that may do the trick
WASHINGTONβSaying the long-overdue gesture was a step towards atoning for the space agencyβs past transgressions, NASA issued a formal apology Wednesday for the 1969 genocide of the moonβs native population. βThe time has come to recognize NASAβs detestable role in the massacre of the moonβs original inhabitants,β said NASA spokesperson Natalie Warheit, adding that the blood of countless indigenous moon natives would forever be on the organizationβs hands. βWhen we first set foot upon the moon, we found a thriving and peaceful civilization that welcomed our astronauts as friends and even worshipped Neil Armstrong as a god. Shamefully, we exploited their trust by slaughtering thousands, indirectly killing even more by exposing them to Earth diseases against which they had no defense, and then burying them all in mass graves by the Mare Serenitatis basin. NASA apologizes unequivocally for these atrocities.β At press time, NASA had also issued an apology for its role in toppling the democratic government of Neptune during the Voyager 2 mission.
@dry cairn Well, that certainly qualifies as #the-water-cooler
Apparently Google knows you are quite the conspiracy theorist
no that was categorized under nasa
i saw some other bullshit storys today that don't belong
Hi, has anyone a working config for a mysensors serial gateway with hassio?

Hello! Just got into automations and was wondering about triggers. trigger:
- platform: time
at: "23:28"
Is it possible to use a variable as the time on "at"?
@fast kernel You should ask in #330944238910963714
huh, this is intresting
The Onion used to be the only fake news site before... now we have many - facebook, twitter...and more!
facebag and shitter are not websites they just an agressive evil cancer
Twitter isn't bad, especially if you follow the right accounts

I closed my facebag account in 2005 and never looked back
I have an account, but I havent used it for ages
@pure vine what was the screenshot above? spectre and meltdown - is there a tool that will tell you if your machine is infected?
@last plaza a thing was added to sysfs that told you if your hardware was vulnerable and what fixes have been implemented
hmm...
@last plaza pretty much any cpu is vulnerable and 98% of cpu's need physical access to the machine
hmm... how can you tell for sure? is there a patch?
Not the pi tho @dry cairn according to the raspberry pi foundation
yeah its pretty much everywheer
may not be the arm processors
Some arm processors
thou shall not believe the company who would be looking at a class action
No, arm confirmed it
i refer to my previous statement lol
any company around in the US don t have too good of a track record with telling the truth π
@dry cairn but arm is British and now Japanese
I'll ask this in random because it's not 100% Home Assistant related ... Has anyone had problems adding a Tradfi dimmer to the Tradfi app?
I've pressed the button 4x like the instructions say, it flashes red, but then that's it.
of ffs, the instructions scroll down & there's moree!

I'll go sit in the corner.
is it possible to add multiple tradifir remotes to a room?

i grabbed 2 while i was there
i drove up this morning
the printer is fantastic
holy crap! not sure if they have any location here in Ohio
did you have to assemble that or is that pre-assembled?
cool!!!
didn't you get some from gearbest? how many more do you need? π
well for 299 i couldn t resist
i saw the invoice what they pair for em
close to 650$
they sold em for 1250
now they wanna get rid of em
they unknown and nobody ever heard of em
but all parts are open source and readily available
that is awesome! How is the print quality?
that was just a quick 1 minute cailbration but i recalibrated it and now its just fantastic

The guy was telling me it can print really high resolution too
@dry cairn have you taken it apart yet?
I just got home
nah i got it running and calibrated
thing got fantastic resolution
@gusty root
thats 20 micron
i can go even lower
i used flashprint
load the stl into flashprint get it setup then export to sd and print
You can use the teplicatorG software too I think
I havenβt used it but Iβll try it
flashforge flashprint
So what type of board does it have?
So what are we upgrading first @dry cairn
the board
oddly enough that is actually a nice power supply and the extruders are great too
So smoothieboards?
yup
i have to work out what the steps per mm are for the X Y steppers and Z
and the extruder
i gotta study the replicator prints
Didnβt the guy give you that info?
heh didn t have it yet
he also never tried the printers out like he said he would
i think he tought i was full of shit lol
and i wouldn t show up
I think he screens calls

Another buddy of mine called them up today and bought another printer.
lol
So they sold 4 printers today, at least.
yeah
he must have sold a couple yesterday too after we talked about em
told em the homeassistant community got a hold of em
he said yeah he was wondering why he sold so many

T330 5U with 64GB, 8TB HDD

there are more expensive ones... I couldn'f afford them π
what are you gonna run on that thing!

not too bad
@last plaza thats nice i like poweredge servers
i got a poweredge with 128 cores and 512gig ram
its a lil older but meh
you can configure and customize online that fits your needs... I wanted to get 1U rack server initially, but this can also go into a rack if I decide to expand
those are expensive!!! @dry cairn
no it wasn t hahahaha i sniped that thing on fleabay for 800$
thou shall not buy new servers when you can get one 2 years old for under 1k π
mine is only 8 cores - single xeon processor but has room to add another processor in the future, but RAM is limited to 64GB
oh wow!
I didnt have much luck with NUC, and I'm spending $1200 for that anyway.. thought I'd get something more powerful.... I'm not worried about form factor atm
I have never setup ESXi before.... that would be interesting week next week
ok..
you should have asked for the spectre meltdown discount

but yeah poweredge is nice

Hi guys, I would like to use a Wemos D1 Mini (ESP8266) with a simple reed sensor to publish the state over MQTT. I want a simple Door sensor which doesn't make more than just publish the state of the reed sensor. I searched the net but I only found tutorials and codes which are overpowered, I got one example to run, but it creates its own unsecured WLAN .. Can somebody give me a hint where to find a simple sketch for me? Or maybe a hint how to build it by myself? Im a newbie at programming, so it's kinda hard to start for me ..
oh sorry, wrong channel π

does it go in custom components, does it install itself into HA?
@dry cairn So, did Mr Blisterhand make it a full 24 hours?
i think he made it longer
