OK.. 15 hours is up 😄
@strong ridge you're in luck! New episode is out 😄
LOL Awesome!
Okei google, play the latest Home Assistant podcast
Also, Google Music Podcasts has also just pushed out the latest episode finally
nice podcast, i want to start automating my cats as well 😉
Regarding that issue with garbage bins and cameras; wouldn't an easy solution be to use QR codes?
@prime plaza I'm planning integration with the calendar to get notifications and setting new events for cutting claws and other cat related stuff. To take it a bit further 😹
yea for sure want to do stuff like that as well
There is a truly automated cat litter box, but it's like more then $500. Seems a bit...nutty to buy 😉
I'll just have to stick to cleaning my self
that seems a bit much ye
i actually bought some Xiaomi sensors to use with my Terrarium as well
want to try and use the water sensors to see if i need to refill water and stuff
That should work!
you're using the Xiaomi motion sensor for the litterbox ye?
Yup
cool i should get myself some of those as well then 😃
They are quite sensitive, I have to have them pointing towards the wall so that me passing it doesnt count
Im using a water sensor to check for a specific waterlevel in my basement to start the pump to pump out the water. Works well. (Yes its ok that there is some water there).
So i totally recommend the water sensor.
Hey guys, I think I'd be ready to do a guest spot on Snips soon. We have some pretty cool integration now with the addon and some exciting stuff in the works.
@fickle pewter awesome! We'll be in touch
haha
I think the allowed_networks there is just saying what local networks to scan on for the devices. You should be able to access the configurator anywhere though
But yeah #330944238910963714 might have more luck for you
Thanks! 😃
Topic suggestion for the DIY geeks https://esphomelib.com/esphomeyaml/using-with/sonoff-s20.html
Esphomeyaml is created to be discoverarable by HA!
cool
@flat ivy @blazing prawn if you're looking for any future guest spots or contributors I would love to get involved, help out, and give back to the community. Big fan of the podcast so far. Can check out my setup here if interested https://github.com/geekofweek/homeassistant
@remote comet awesome!!! We’d love to have you! I’ll DM you
@remote comet pretty sure your repo was one of the first I ever starred (possibly the only I've starred)
that's awesome, think I was an earlier example.
Great repo, @remote comet. 👍
@remote comet I looked at your repo just now too and was about to star it, only I already had 😄 Great repo! Will look further into it on the computer later and possibly get some ideas. Great Readme too!
thanks, updating the README has been on my todo list for far too long. Finally got around to getting some of it done, I hope to polish it up a bit more in the future.
Hey guys, just wanted to say loved the latest episode of the PodCast. Guest spots, even from just regular users are really interesting to hear and always give me loads of ideas, and things to buy! 😛
Thanks @prisma badge !
No problem! You guys are doing a great job!
@echo basalt so this:
mqtt:
broker: sonoff.maddox.co.uk
port: 1883
client_id: home-assistant-1
keepalive: 60
protocol: 3.1
Where does the topic go?
oh sorry! wrong thread
wrong spot bud this is podcast 😛
@prisma badge I'll also go ahead and say thank you 😄 /Regular user
Thank you very much for the shout-out about esphomelib! 😀
No, thank you @edgy phoenix
@lapis inlet @edgy phoenix Keep up the amazing work!!!
Thank m8, that is just way to kind
😃
A lot more on the way
Haha amazing!!
Podcast website down?
Cloudflare says they are working, but yeah 502 on hasspodcast.io
It's back up, for those playing at home.
Sorry @brittle dock had some downtime. Podcast has been very popular and getting a lot of traffic. Working on making things more stable!
No worries, I was just looking for show notes. Gald it was planned and not something breaking
@brittle dock err, can't say it was planned. Unfortunately I was asleep for the ordeal so didn't get to see the email alerts. I'll be working on upgrading the server so it (fingers crossed) doesn't happen again
I have limited understanding of what that website does, so excuse my ignorance, but why do you have a dynamic site? Would a static site work for you?
The site completely manages the content for us. I give it the show notes, and the podcast recording, and then it does the work to ensure the notes look pretty (sort of) on the site, and available in the right format for the podcast apps. So unfortunately dynamic is the best way (otherwise publishing a new episode would be a lot of work)
I'd be interested in understanding that a little better when you have time.
Like your stack, and apps
Oh, the server is VPS with a LAMP stack. The site is WordPress
Thanks!
thanks guys for the episode (im late as always)
of course it means more tinkering (looking at aaron repo) 😉
Looks like another Podcast avenue is coming via Plex 😃 https://www.plex.tv/blog/have-plex-your-way/?utm_source=Plex&utm_medium=email&utm_content=podcasts_button&utm_campaign=Podcasts+Type+First+May+30+2018
Good to see we're already available on Plex!
where do you find the podcasts in the web interface?
From what I can see there's no new section for it
just start searching for a podcast in the search menu, and it will appear as if it is another server in your list
k
thank you!
It should show up in Online Content under your libraries. I see it in the plex tab that opens when I click your link, but not in a regualr plex tab that I open otherwise
nm.. it's there now
we probably needed to add it so thanks for the link @blazing prawn 😃
haha I didn't add it there, not sure where Plex is getting its Podcast list from but I'm pleased
hmm not seeing podcasts in my server tab
yea tahts awesome that they picked it up like that
In your server list can you see "News"?
What client are you using? I don't think Podcasts has rolled out everywhere yet. I can just see it in the server list on plex.tv/web/app
On the desktop I usually go to my local URL so I guess its only enabled at plex.tv for now
I am also on the plexpass beta builds for the server too
ah interesting, yeah I suspect it hasn't come down to the servers yet
yea, pretty awesome how they just picked up all these podcasts with all the detailed info must be using some type of list you guys publish too
yeah exactly, very cool
Ow the podcast is available on Plex? 😄
For Podcasts to show up under Online Content, you have to connect to https://plex.tv/web/app# If you connect to your local server, it doesn't show up
See it in that new app. Very cool.
I'm getting ready to stream again 😃
nice 😄
a friendly tip, mute your mic when coughing 😉
@lapis inlet remember higher resolution
1080n now
encoding changed as wel
Aah well 😛
we all have to learn
I've updated the stream a lot today
Could you share the id?
shared in stream chat
thx
just wanted to say: Thanks for the podcast! It's great to get updates about HomeAssistant via audio! 😃
Thanks @odd tangle !
@blazing prawn have you had a look into auphonic? it's a tool to cleanup audio. It's great for echoes, different volume levels etc. And I think there is a free tier for a few hours a month.
Just mentioning it, because you often have a setup with 2-3 people talking with different audio setups.
we used it to cleanup recordings of our conference recordings
I do some editing, and mix all the tracks into a single file, then push it over to Auphonic to do its thing
are you recording via skype? or is everyone recording and you do a mix of the tracks later?
We use Zencastr, which records everyones tracks in the browser, and then gives me an MP3 track of everyone
oh cool. thanks for the info.
keep up the good work 👍 😃
Cheers!
Thank you guys so much for the podcast! It really helps the time pass by and I love the part where you talk about your automations. It gives me great ideas for my next projects. Keep it up!
Maybe we can stream the Podcast live some time
Live with questions from the audience in this chatroom 😃
That would be great, although weird timezones might make that a bit difficult 😉
Just gotta announce it enough ahead of time for people to make adjustments
lol like @lapis inlet streaming at 4am my time 😄
lol
@blazing prawn It definitely would be hard 😛
Another great episode, gang! Loved it. 😎
tried listening but my 8 year old kept interrupting heh
😛
nice episodes, keep them coming 😄
Suggestion for next episodes: Talk about wiring a new home for home assistant and maybe a dedicated episode to security
Thanks @digital juniper !
Thanks @digital juniper that’s been something we’ve been toying with for a while. Id love to do it for one of the eps coming up if we can swing it
took me a few days but finally listened to the last episode. another good one, cheers guys
thanks for the reminder @primal lance .. got my listening sorted now for the trip home
Always listen to every episode in my car on my way home! Nice to read the show notes for inspiration. Keep up the good work! 👍🏼
There are some other general home automation podcasts out there to get you between new Hass episodes @sick acorn
I'm mostly listening to other makery podcasts, got a couple of year's worth of reclaimed audio to listen to 😃
I listen to "home on:" and "the internet of things Podcast" but I'm looking for other diy stuff all the time to listen to
new podcast app on android....Google Podcast....already see the podcast here 😃
yay they almost have as many podcast apps as messaging and music apps now
yea lol its like 2 different teams working to a similar goal lol....they already have podcasts in google play music but hey why not do a stand alone app and hope it sticks to the wall 😛
Just yesterday I installed youtube music to go with google play music. I already have allo, duo and hangouts. Now there is this. I am a huge google fan but seriously all of this could be done in two apps
Just thought I'd drop an episode topic idea that I know I'd like to hear about.
A notification system. Right now I'm using HTM5 Push Notifications, and it was good enough at first, but now I've added sensors on every door/window and starting to work on using this component https://www.home-assistant.io/components/alarm_control_panel.manual_mqtt/ and I'm realizing if I am going to continue to use HTML5 Push Notifications I'm going to have to make a choice between being more informed, or being less spammed with notifications, as there isn't a way to take advantage of Android's notification categories so I could just group all the window notifications together, the door notifications together, the alarm.. etc.
I've been looking around for examples of other people's systems, but I'm not sure where to look.
@lean hornet you can use the tag feature for HTML5 to replace teh notification not sure if thats what you want but it may help clean up teh notifications
Yeah, I currently use that for each individual window/door. So that if the door opens, then closes, the closed notif overwrites the open one, or the alarm armed notif overwriting the alarm pending notif, But I don't want a window closing to overwrite another notification of a different window being open.
@lean hornet you can create different tags for each window, i dont think there is a limit to how many tags you have
Yeah, well, doing a different tag for each window is proving much more spamming than desired. It's a very small house, only 4 rooms, but it would be great if I could specify a notification category https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/notifiers/notifications#ManageChannels, and a notification tag. Basically, I personally want a recommendation for a notify platform that supports that, but in general I also thought it would make a decent topic on the podcast. Exploring how different people acomplish this kind of goal.
Maybe raise a feature request for that on the forum?
@blazing prawn might be nice to mention https://github.com/home-assistant/hassos/issues/33 in the next episode. Maybe more people will help with donations
Thanks @digital juniper just saw that on Twitter too!
really looking forward to more support on devices
Not sure when you guys are going to record, 0.72 will contain a new experimental UI https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/en/lovelace_index.html
For more info, development is driven by @hushed scroll and @vale dock has been converting his whole UI to it
"driven by" means "helped balloob a bit" 😉
I should be done with the move today....will post a link when the whole UI is ready 👍
wow, that's a mind blowingly good idea.. super excited for this 😃
@steep field nice! I think I saw something about a calendar component as well coming in the UI
@blazing prawn we might have to pull it. Somehow the production code minifier breaks it. Don't think we can fix it in time
As I did some exploration but couldn't find the clue
@steep field Aww damn. That one looked cool too.
Our recording this week should be after the release again, unless the release has to be delayed. Either way I'll be running the RC to test that new experimental UI out. Sounds very cool, so thanks @hushed scroll and @vale dock
Seconded!! Thanks @steep field @hushed scroll @vale dock!
Am a bit behind on listening, so I just listened to ep 26 and now thanks to @torpid mortar I really feel I have to get into appdaemon. Is it a good way to learn python as I go on with ad, or should I read up a bit before? I'm a .net-developer, so I'm used to oop, but a newbie on python
@long herald learn python as you go along starting to use appdaemon. You will learn what you need to learn when you identify what you want to automate
@sour pebble I can move some of my current automations in there, should be a good start
@long herald thinking of doing the same. Finding NodeRED a bit of a hassle
Yeah, I want to continue hacking code 😉
Maybe I'll even learn enough to be able to contribute to the project at some later date
@long herald the best way to learn is to have a mission 👍
So I brought a Python book to learn Python specifically for AD, but actually I've learnt far more just playing around with automations... still, I've never found anything that can't be done in yaml, but hey one day.. 😛
better code > can be done
sometime.. but remembering where I put things is key 😉
@blazing prawn Just wrote my first appdaemon app for controlling my light with ikea remote and dimmer (via deconz). It was way more easy than I thought. Give it a go 😄
@long herald awesome! @torpid mortar whole idea of MVC for my smart home makes it very very appealing
Enjoy, gang. As I stated, Node-RED is a fine product, but as you get into how truly modular and reusable pure Python is with AD, I’m guessing you’ll be hooked.
@torpid mortar I'm already hooked and planning on moving all my current automations to ad little by little (going to take some time..)
@long herald sweet! Yeah one at a time 😃
@blazing prawn Just listen your last episode, you guys totally misunderstood Nest ETA sensor. That should blame on me, since I only put the sensor there in 0.71, but only provide service to set it in 0.72!
ooooh
@normal canopy interesting. When we were recording we only had the PR to go off, so was trying our best to read what it does
So in 0.72, to use that feature, you should do following staff, first enable Home/Away in Nest App, to allow thermostat set "away" temperature.
the second, use HA nest.set_mode to change home/away state to away, or set it in Nest App, etc
Right, so you can use HA to update the home/away state of Nest, and a sensor to see the state of home/away in Nest?
the third, when you go back home from workplace, use HA nest.set_mode to set mode to "away", at the same time set "eta" to tell Nest warm up or cool down your home temperature
aha!
This third step, you can not set from Nest App, That is "Work with Nest" only feature
A good reason to start using HA, haha
oh right
you know now that makes MUCH more sense
The way we described it would be way too good to be true
I'll add a correction in the next episode 😉
😋
Here is the PR, https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/pull/14901
I also added an "Work with Nest" only feature security_state sensor
sensor.[your structure name]_security_state
awesome
This feature only make sense after we change to Cloud Push mode
yeah of course, much better
The recording is done... right? 😛
Twitter says so
@lapis inlet Not long, just got to edit it 😉
done yet? 😄
😉 Almost, its going through final stages atm while I upload the show notes
heh
@strong ridge there you go, thanks to @edgy phoenix for coming on this week!
lol thanks! not like I can listen until tomorrow on my way to work! lol
Unacceptable 😉
I agree but YOU try to tell my wife that
headphones 😉
Just finished listening! Thanks guys! Can't wait for my ESP's to arrive 😄
😄
@blazing prawn @flat ivy great podcasts just finished listening to 4 of them i missed over the last couple of months
Thanks @ripe violet!
@blazing prawn you will be happy to know I have now completed listen to the latest. Great as always and really liked the stuff from @waxen quest. No headphones required @lapis inlet 😝
😛
@blazing prawn on the show notes for Lovelace, the yaml looks wrong. shouldnt it be ui-lovelace.yaml?
Cheers @austere narwhal , thanks for listening!
great show - well done everybody 😃
great show again
Loved hearing about the updates and gives me new ideas to try out! Thanks everyone involved! 👌
Thanks guys, for another entertaining and informative podcast. And a special shout to @edgy phoenix for his appearance and his great work on esphomelib. ❤ this project.
@blazing prawn your website homepage is messed up
@ripe violet are you sure? Might be a DNS issue on your side not loading a CDN library or something?
😁
Thanks so much for the podcast👍 keeps me going, even if it's hard
Thanks @meager terrace !
So.. Wife acceptance factor: is there a tutorial for that? I try to get started but every idea the response is: what is if I don't like it
I think the best way is to make everything seemless as possible. If something works today (like a light switch, or TV remote) don't stop that from working, but make your automations around it
Or get another wife....
for me its voice - Alexa did wonders for the Partner acceptance factor. The gf refuses to use apps/gui but she finds that voice is a lot more interactive! 😃
same here.. My wife has absolutely ZERO interest in a control panel or app or anything of that nature. But the Google Home? She is all about that!
I have the family acceptance factor and not the wife factor yet...
It's so sad with all the "get another wife" comments and also just ppl in general maintaining the thought that women cant be interested
I for one think that regardless of how people see the "wife filter" it's a good indicative of how good/shitty your setup is 😃
why not just say partner och family or something more neutral. Girls are having a shitty enough time in tech
not where I come from 😃
here's like 50/50 split in dev areas, a bit less in ops
my gf works with linux servers, she's still critic of my setup whenever I put up something new
I'd expect girls doing HA to say "husband"
or whatever their partner is (to avoid assumptions)
Thing is the industry and hobby is largely dominated by men. Just because you have a better experience doesn't negate all other experiences. Listen to the people saying it's bothering them instead of saying it's not true.
I hope whoever commented (in a joke as it gave them work) didn't think it was not true
I'm not having a good day in respect to this topic so I'm sorry if I'm getting worked up.
and I'm having a good day, so no need to be sorry of anything 😃
as I said, in the company I work for girls make around 50% of the population, and they get same type of treatment... even tho.... being girls they get more perks as boys give them more attention
which is annoying when as a guy you go and ask for info and you get double the shit, and a nice looking girl gets it on 1st try
That's wrong as well of course.
eh, i'm not complaining much, just makes me better at what I do
now that you mention it, I wonder how many active girls we have in HA community
@long herald wanted to say thnx for your configs really learned alot about the basics when i set up my stuff 😃
@edgy oxide Glad to help!
seems that alot of us swedes got a huge interest in this project
begun submitting pr to hassbian and making custom_componments etc 😄
🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪 🇸🇪
just like what usually happens in my wow guild 😃
@edgy oxide I saw some kind of breakdown of percentage of ha users around the world and Sweden came up high!
yeah im doing my part 😄 really loving this project so gonna try and contribute as much as possible towards a better platform
@long herald Is that info public? and dynamic? 😃
@vast crest I saw it some time ago. Maybe on the blog? Can't find it now.
Ah :/
Would be cool to have that dynamically updated somwhere 😄
@long herald - my apologies, it wasn't meant to draw any offence. What I was more trying to aim that poor attempt at a flippant joke at is other halves/partners, who are not always totally supportive of all of our crazy ideas, to make things "easier", male or female.. in my instance however she is a female, and is less than impressed with a lot of my ideas, however sometimes I can begrudgingly get her to agree something is "quite cool". I hope the oversight on my part didn't ruin your day too much
There's a whole heap of stuff I didn't even mention in the podcast; but if anyone wants to talk further; reach out 😄
Another great episode!! Thanks to @blazing prawn and @flat ivy as always, and a special thanks to @obsidian orchid !!! I'll be checking out your GitHub when I get home today!
@obsidian orchid Sonic screwdriver!? What, how, where? 😍😍
Not exactly related to THIS podcast, but HASS gets a couple of mentions on this week's "The Internet of Things" podcast. 😊
oooh nice @strong ridge , good things I hope
@blazing prawn kinda
Nothing bad exactly. Just don't recommend Hass for noobies. Lol
$$ 😃
Hmm, things like HassOS/IO and the UI configs will change that eventually. I think the big thing about HASS is that it is so powerful that you'll want to do more than the basic automations that a "user friendly" hub can provide.
I beleive if you want to really get fancy with Smarthings, you have to create an applet (or something like that), which is basically coding anyway
Yup. I switched over to hassio and like it so far. Lost none of my previous functionality
@long herald this is the one I own... https://www.thewandcompany.com/eleventh-doctors-sonic/
I should dig it out again. The ir receiver was mounted in an inconvenient spot so it didn't get wide use, the bindings and automations are still in my config
cool, just subbed to podcast, im a newb in this whole arena, cant wait to get involved!
@still edge nice! What are you hoping to automate?
pretty much everything, i already do lights and a few plugs, and a sprinkler, but damn if the sky isnt the limit it seems
im in home remodel but carrying around all this heavy stuff is getting to me, so moght start talking customers into letting me automate their homes, like in the 'movies'
nice!
My only concern with a business like that is support
everyones home is highly unique
yeah thats true, ill have to practice on some of my long time customers first
There are very reliable home automation systems out there, but they're closed off and $$$$
ill probably start off with some sonoffs and just getting them to tell alexa to turn lights on and off
Maintenance, especially with something that moves as fast as Home Assistant can be a real pain. You don't want to get a call at 10pm because the latest HASS had a breaking change, and now your customers can't shower cause the bathroom lights don't turn on
simple and sorta 'break-proof'
Mmm sort of, until the internet drops out
I'd first start trying to make automations for guests in your own home first
yeah... oh well ill just mad scientist my place for now, maybe down the road with all that other stuff
I've found guests in the home to be the most interesting use case. As they are "stuck in their ways" and the automations need to account for them, not the them accounting for the home being automated. So things like manual overrides, and non-voice control are critical
thats true, if internet went out my sonoffs are in the box, so i cant hit the button, lots of things to consider
Ya 😦
i might need to see how hard it is to solder a wire to the button and move it out to the plate somehow
Yeah, I know Z-wave switches allow the switch to still be used (as long as they are momentary switches)
i have lots of reading to do thats for sure, love hearing other peoples ideas and projects
Oh absolutely!
im still trying to get my Pi set up, just got it today to try out HA
Nice, you might be in luck. I think HassOS 1.0 released today
Which is a simple way to install hassIO
yes, i was told it is, its been preparing for an hour though, figured itd be done by now
aww no
i flashed that Pi3 and stuck it in the 3B+ and im just waiting, not sure if i should restart it or just wait some more
hmm tough one
maybe i missed a step, i better go back and read some more
That’s my Tesla screen
Niiiice
Now my drive to work is more productive 😊
😄
Dang @tranquil kernel that’s a new one we haven’t gotten before haha! awesome!
@flat ivy thank you! 😊
For those playing along at home - my work in progress bathroom has been stable for a few days now; i've just pushed it to my github
I added an input boolean for 'automatic' mode; it's turned on when events happen that should be auto off.. then it's switched off if necessary (like the lights made bright manually turns off auto off); humidity detection is using the bayesian component
I have further optimisations to make but it's at a pretty good point now
Onion News: Bathroom automations are the root cause of 90 percent of divorces world wide. 🍿
whelp. Finally getting back into HA after my move/departure from the podcast. Do you think I can find my config backups? Noooope.
Looks like I'm starting from scratch (well, where my last git commit was, which was months before)
Best case. Start fresh with lovelace 😃
Thanks for the show again guys!
You guys where a little off in the HassOS department though 😉
I love the podcast
Thanks @digital juniper
@lapis inlet aww no. I thought we might be. Will have to get you on to explain all about it, and your awesome addons 😃
(which you just keep smashing out)
I'm pretty quiet at this moment 😉
How many addons have you got published now?
haha exactly
:S not sure about the exact number actually :S
Still very impressive 😃
lol
Great show again!!! Thanks guys!
Haha come on @lapis inlet
love the podcast guys!!! @flat ivy @blazing prawn I had Ring Pro door bell for short time last year, and had t return it because it puts everything in cloud and I didn't like it. I ended up getting HikVision cameras and currently saving the videos locally to my NAS.
@blazing prawn interesting how you split your HA setup on multiple instances. I have 3 instances running at home, but they don't talk to each other... each of them are dedicated to do one job
@flat ivy Lets arrange that 😉
@tranquil kernel ahhh yeah I’m ok with cloud for now but once the sub runs out I guess there won’t be a recording :/ or maybe it still will idk
@tranquil kernel that's interesting. So I thought about keeping them isolated. For the most part they are, but there are a couple of things where it one can report back to the other.
So, how have you got yours isolated into their own tasks?
My issue with that is sharing of data. Let's say you have instance one, which has all your Z-wave sensors. Then instance 2 that has all your Hue Lights. How do you get the lights to turn on with motion?
I would like to know this too. I am trying to use the mqtt_eventstream but not working very well yet.
@blazing prawn In my setup, the HAs don't talk to each other at all... one is connected to TV, and controls my TV using HDMI CEC, and also dims and turns off lights when TV is on at night.. it is also a snapcast client in the family room. Other one is dedicated to RF switches, that's in a different room that also has snapcast client running and connected to speakers.. None of them need to talk to primary HA - where all the automations and scripts run.... I have a script that automatically updates HA version as soon as new version available.... so far the automatic updates is working really well
@tranquil kernel that's very interesting. So then I guess the RF switches never have to talk to the main HA!
That’s right! They are on their own 😊 but still controlled by HA. They are used for fixed automations - basement lamps., Christmas lights, plant grow lights...etc. they automatically turn off after certain time.
Fixed automations that doesn’t overlap with my main HA
Grow Lights 🤔 @tranquil kernel
Smokabowl Skalavala
haha
I think Skalavala translates to that in Hindi
LMAO
@vast crest started it
It is for seed starters guys! Trust me, I’m innocent 😇
riiight
never heard if that strand
yeah I did that once when I got a rather seedy bag
lol
@forest cosmos said yall are off topic
Tinkerer is away for 13m 3s with a message :point_right: Down the rabbit hole
sorry.. misread the chan name.. thought it was #potcast
🤣
i was about to say isn t this Potcast?
Stay tuned for an upcoming episode featuring special guest and greenskeeper @tranquil kernel who takes us through his automated hydroponics setup, powered by High Assistant
LOL
@tranquil kernel we gonna start calling you your highness from now on
aright i can work with that
too bad @tranquil kernel don't have his old avatar no more we could have photoshopped a blunt in his mouth
and the burger king crown
lol 😂
oh boy what did i start
lmao - it is all because of @paper scaffold - dirty minds 😝
@willow fossil pushed me and @echo basalt is a witness
i didn t see jack shit
what a friend
there you go! My statement stands corrected
Hey now, y’all need to calm TF down in here!!!!!!!!!
Sliced fingers you mean?
Hey @blazing prawn and @flat ivy Just found your podcast a few days ago! Can’t believe I never found it sooner. I’m slowly working my way backwards through them. Keep up the great work - one Aussie to another! 👍🏽🇦🇺
Hi @blazing prawn and @flat ivy I am a new listener (listened to previous 3 episodes on way back from France to UK). Really enjoy the show and chat about HA related things. I've learnt a thing or two from it. Going to look at the notes for latest one regarding the Lovelace yaml file being split... keep up the excellent work
G'day @tawdry nova and @pallid tree glad you both are enjoying the podcast!
yes love it
keeps my mind ticking along when driving down the motorway, giving me ideas to play about with
haha awesome! That's what its all about. Inspiring some other great automation ideas!
what it yourself or @flat ivy that was getting the Ring?
@flat ivy was the one getting the ring, I'm a bit jealous
my experience wasnt so good
sent it back in the end
the street light in my street stopped the nightvision mode activating
oh no
which meant it was useless at night, the bulb in the distance (About 40m away) was enough to dupe it into thinking enough light
so all i got was silohettes
spelt wrongly
their tech supp suggested moving it to other side of door
same problem as there are lights in the street
most frustrating thing was software didnt allow you to override it manually
oh that seems like an oversight
i went with power over ethernet cameras in the end connected to Blue Iris software, always on and recording
thats what i said to them, but they werent interested
sorry to bore you with that.. needed to vent still, still suffering the pain from the experience 😃
haha not at all
gives me more to consider before I accidentally pull the trigger 😉
leave u in peace now.... and Rohan will never get round to installing, he seems to always say he hasnt done it yet or tried it on the show
LOL!!
https://blinkforhome.com/pages/blink-video-doorbell was one to look out for.. $99 in the US, smaller and nicer looking than the Ring monster
@lapis inlet haha .... ive not done a single automation in HA, too busy just faffing about trying to understand it. When i show people they say what does it do for you thats automated.... one day i will do an automation
Spent all afternoon splitting my configuration.yaml file out to files/folders... was getting way out of control
Which turns the light on the toilet off after X time. The damn kids always leave the lights on.
perfect use for it! My mate at work had done the same with his bathroom extractor fan, his kids/missus leaves it on all day so he put a sonoff in the loft and uses HA to check if its drawing power and the people are out then turns it off
Nice!
You should ask everyone that listens to the podcast to find a way to get the Ring cameras livestream to trigger and send data to hass! And the local storage without subscription too. ( / Annoyed Ring user)
Hahahaha thanks @pallid tree @tawdry nova
Yeah it was me who got it - haven’t had a ton of issues with it except the app is slow - to the point that I’m worried I’ll miss someone if they ring the doorbell; but that might also be my iPhone 6 :/
Also seconding @long herald haha
@flat ivy the app was slow, the pizza guy pressed it, i got excited as it was my first real user of it and the app sat spinning saying contacting ring doorbell.... guy knocked door after that and I gave up
@long herald thats why there is Axis Video door station M8105 😉
@sour pebble But I got it as a Christmas gift! 😂
Christmas gifts are often great!
@flat ivy @blazing prawn 0.75 released https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/releases eagerly waiting for the next pod cast 😃
Man feels like these keep getting faster! We’re recording tomorrow 😃 (assuming I wake up in time, that is)
I have CloudMqtt setup, where my brother in UK can drop in messages, where it plays TTS at our home in the US - fun stuff! If you open up your MQTT and give us access, we can wake you guys up on time 😛
fun things you can do with IoT these days!
@tranquil kernel how about you give us access to yours and we can all send you little messages from time to time
@strong ridge Absolutely! I will do that! It would be fun especially during the holidays time! 😊
Lol
Lol
Hmmmmm. Is there a way in mqtt to limit the channels to which a client may publish? Ie - User X may only publish to /holiday/messages
I may have to research this some
@strong ridge ```
In order to restrict a client to publish or subscribe only to topics it is authorized to, it is necessary to implement topic permissions on the broker side. These permissions need to be configurable and adjustable during the runtime of the broker. A topic permission could for example look like the following:
Allowed topic (exact topic or wild card topic)
Allowed operation (publish, subscribe, both)
Allowed quality of service level (0, 1, 2, all)
Oh hell yes
@tranquil kernel wakeup! The latest episode is out just for you ;)
Special thanks to @digital juniper 🇷🇴 for joining us this week, and being very understanding with our technical difficulties ⚠ . We got there in the end 🙏 ❤
Thanks for the show again guys! Very interesting stuff @digital juniper
WoooHooo! I’m going on a drive just to listen the pod cast 😊!!!Thank you @blazing prawn @flat ivy and @digital juniper !
Lol you were our motivation to get this out in time @tranquil kernel 😛
😂
great podcast guys, listened to it today. Nice guest spot from @digital juniper who is a very nice and helpful chap. keep up the excellent work, I could listen to HA and Lovelace talk all day.
That new Conditional card is awesome. I have my UI only showing maps of people when they aren't home. Great for uncluttering the stuff not needed atm
and GREAT podcast too!! as always 😃
Thanks @pallid tree and @strong ridge !
@strong ridge Great use case, will implement that! I also use conditional to hide media players when not home
Great podcast guys!
Thanks @granite skiff
Hi @blazing prawn . Does Aaron registered on Discord?
Got some questions regarding his config.
Sure is he's @torpid mortar
Hi gang. 😎 Great time, @blazing prawn and @flat ivy.
Thanks @papa toc#7391
@torpid mortar you were great! Thanks for making the time!
Loved the podcast as usual! Thanks guys!!
@blazing prawn Re the Waze sensor. Has anyone worked out how to get that going in OZ?
I use a Broadlink mini to automate my stupid Roomba 800-series 😉
Following up on Home Assistant as a Service: for anyone wanting it, here is the entire configuration I use to manage my parents' Nest thermostat by proximity: https://gist.github.com/bachya/e55fc44c027d64bdd53e197d5a656da9
@steel abyss would love to know as well. For now it looks like Aussies are stuck :(
@blazing prawn @flat ivy GREAT podcast guys!!! Thank you!
Also, any recommendations for a good microphone for recordings?
@tranquil kernel @flat ivy and I both use the blue yeti for recording. They are a great mic to get started with. There's also the snowball from blue as well.
There's probably some more professional grade mics out there, but but sure which ones to recommend
@blazing prawn thank you! will check it out! I am looking for something basic, nothing fancy. I love the start and end music on the pod cast! Once I listen to it, I cannot get it out of my mind 😃
@flat ivy I am in the same spot as you with the Roomba stuff. I did find this thread talking about how to use a broadlink (they make an IR remote) to start, stop, dock, spot, etc. Just wanted to tell you about that! https://community.home-assistant.io/t/irobot-roomba/6288/25
We've released another episode this weekend, which we're calling the "Spotlight" 🔦 episodes. We'll focus on a single topic and deep-dive into them.
Special thanks to @torpid mortar for his in-depth knowledge on the subject.
If you've got an idea for something you'd like us to go in-depth in, please feel free to reach out to us
Excellent podcast. Thank you @torpid mortar @blazing prawn and @flat ivy for encouraging community involvement. Makes me want to polish off some of my custom components to make them suitable for inclusion.
That’s awesome @atomic loom! Do it up!!
Hey folks, anyone having issues with their Alexa-connected Sonos playing the HASS Podcast?
@flat ivy do you mean a Sonos One?
Yeah - that works
I'll ask her when I get home, however Alexa on a dot/echo should use TuneIn radio, so if it works on a dot/echo in theory it should also work on the Sonos One no problem
@flat ivy there unfortunately is an issue with the podcast on Sonos. I've reached out to Sonos, and their engineers are investigating. Not sure on an ETA, so very frustrating 😦
Got a chance to listen to the new Spotlight episode today. Well done!
Woot!
maybe an episode (and associated links) that go more into depth on how to actually use an ide like pycharm or visual studio code for development would be great.. This seems like a mystery that is a gatekeeper to development. Often asked in the community forums but never answered.
@atomic loom couldn't agree more.
Hmm interesting suggestion @atomic loom
The problem with that is I think it would be suited to more of a video that just audio. Actually have you seen the live streams from @lapis inlet ? He live streams his creation of Hass io add-ons, which may help
+1 to pycharm demo
Is there a YouTube channel that the podcast is on?
@blazing prawn @flat ivy @torpid mortar just wanted to drop in and say that was an outstanding podcast, really dig the special format and the more in-depth discussion. Really enjoyed it
@jade plaza I've been uploading the podcast episodes here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQCrYWOvyqyuHkXE-r_KAkEs8xne6PAxX
@remote comet thanks!!
I have subbed and will check them out tomorrow
I'm just halfway trough the Spotlight eposide (listening on my commute) but I have to say once more, the content you're putting out there is wonderful. Thanks to all who put their time and effort in.
Great podcast chaps 😃
@rigid mulch @inner bison thanks!
Aew we still getting the regular episode this weekend? 😃
Yup, hot off the press has just been released
Just listened to the spotlight episode! Awesome, I really enjoyed the last part... (also liked the shoutout, of course, thanks). But in general, for me personally, I’m contributing to open source for a long time already... I always try to encourage others to do as well (not just to home assistant, but open source in general). The experience is great, valuable and life-changing. (maybe even addictive). Again, in general, whatever the project, start doing docs PRs... You’ll get to now the process of the project. Not every project works the same.
It is just fun and satisfiying, as a bonus, you’ll learn... Every day! Even if you are on the project for years, you’ll still learn from others.
Lastly, this project has its right to exists, not because of Paulus, but because of everybody. There is not a single developer in the world, that can create a project this size alone. So stop looking at it from the window, get out of your safe house and jump in!
I’m a hardcore developer, started doing documentation reviews and started doing Hassio Addons. Just because IMHO a lot of opportunities and improvements could be made in that corner.
❤️ thanks to everybody for being involved
@blazing prawn @flat ivy Two topics for future spotlight episodes came to mind this weekend – for your consideration:
-
Especially with the new auth system in play, a focused episode on security – how to safely expose your instance, how to harden a reverse proxy, other tools you can put in play to restrict access, etc.
-
For those people running HASS manually – no hass.io, etc. – how to create your own Docker-based environment, include other apps as containers, container communication, etc.
@torpid mortar yep that first one is already on our list! I like the idea of the second one too! I think we can add that on the list. What say you, @blazing prawn?
Keep the ideas coming - thanks!!!
@flat ivy @blazing prawn how to keep the forums up ?
yep up /down constantly
@lapis inlet ask @steep field I am sure he wont mind
🤷 ....
@torpid mortar great suggestions! I'll add those to the list. @flat ivy and I are pretty good with #449717345808547842 so we should be able to offer some good tips
Once more a great episode! Thanks for all your work.
Really enjoyed episode on hass 0.77. @flat ivy I think you mentioned that you are restricting external access via „Azure SSO“. I would love to learn more about this setup. I am currently using VPN only for remote access, but this prevents me from using hass cloud and therefore also alexa integration. Can you share some details on your approach?
@flat ivy @blazing prawn great episodes, enjoyed listening to the Dev special whilst sat in traffic. I am one of the who feels overwhelmed at trying to dip my toe in with so many others who are always going to be infinitely better than me
@pallid tree That was my story, too. Jump in. Mess up. Make mistakes. Learn. Get better. I promise you, once you overcome those initial hurdles, it's incredibly rewarding. 👍
@torpid mortar i know its the wrong channel here, but I need to learn something about Python to start with I guess before I attempt anything
@pallid tree Appdaemon is a good place to start learning by doing!
Hey @dusky copper absolutely! I’ll put up a blog post around that if it helps! High level - I use CloudFlare Access to act as an external proxy; have it serve HTTPS Certs too, and NGINX at home basically says to block anyone that’s not CF. Nginx then points back to my hass docker container and serves the page
@pallid tree agreed with @torpid mortar and @long herald - just jump in! Like Aaron said on the ep, if you mess up people will let you know; correct the mistakes and boom! You just developed for HASS 😃
And thanks for the feedback as well 😃
@torpid mortar I remember that you talked about pypi packages. Do you always have to make one of those, even if it's a tiny implementation? Say you have a bt device that you send on and off to via bluepy. Do I have to make a pypi package/implementation for that first to then make a platform? Or is it okey to have that directly in hass?
@long herald there is already a pypi library for bluepy https://pypi.org/project/bluepy/ Since it is already there, it may be easier just referencing that in your component
no matter how small or big the code is, the idea is keep the implementation details specific to device outside HA code.
sharing you with my personal experience, as one of my PR got rejected because of that very reason 😛
Yeah bluepy i know is there already 😃 I mean the device specific code I'm sending with bluepy I guess.
Hey @flat ivy , having a blog post about the external proxy setup would be awesome and would actually extend nicely your docker based setup blog post. Let me know if I can help with testing or reviewing.
@long herald In your case, I feel like bluepy should be enough. The problems would arise if you were attempting to implement low-level BLE logic into HASS itself.
@long herald what you integrating?
@blazing prawn I'm trying to make my custom component for switchbot into a real integration!
There's really nothing like it yet in home assistant, I think at least.
Yeah I think you're right
I certainly haven't come across anything like it yet, and the components page is basically my shopping list
Well seems like I was too slow 😦
Has someone else already made an integration for it?
Yeah just got linked a pr. And I was so excited.. Well, it's great that it's getting in there.
Haha well that's good news!
Good news is that my code is very similar so I probably did a good job 😄 Gotta find something new to work on now then
@long herald that makes it perfect for you to review!
Check the code an leave a comment, that helps the reviewers
You could even test drive it 😃
Yes, I should do that
Bingo, @lapis inlet is right on the money. Cheer up, @long herald – we’ve all been there many times. 😄 Onto something bigger and better!
If you have feedback use this channel or the mail 😉
I think the mail is preferred, @blazing prawn can maybe correct me if I'm wrong 😃
Yeah for now feedback@hasspodcast.io is preferred to reach us. We're looking at adding comments to the site at some point though potentially
Great cast guys!
Small comment regarding Owntracks and beacons. Unfortunately Owntracks for Android droped beacon support.
Is there something better then Owntracks and Beacons? @granite skiff
I'm not an Android user I'm a iOS user but I'm struggling with Owntracks
I have found Life360 to be extremely accurate. We have 5 phones setup with it and it's always correct.
Thanks @strong ridge I'll take a look at that
One of the phones is an iPhone and it's always spot on, so I think you will like. It's free if you don't need it to set zones, but being able to have it report an actual name for a location was worth the couple of bucks a month
I have two android phones. One with owntracks. Works good. And one with zanzito. Zanzito can emulate owntracks, provide additional info about device, and supports FIND ver. 2 for internal positioning.
@strong ridge That is what I use too and it is awesome!
@granite skiff thanks for the heads up! Shame they dropped support for it in Android 😦
@blazing prawn yes. Beacons could improve presence detection.
Currently I'm looking on FIND project. It could detect your position inside building with app or without it.
As I mentioned to @blazing prawn on Twitter I use Monitor for presence detection currently and it works great for me. Thought I’d share here: https://github.com/andrewjfreyer/monitor
More "spotlight" episodes please! As a newbie they helped tremendously!
TEASER: @vocal shale and I just spent an AWESOME hour+ talking about the iOS app with Phil and Rohan
Looking forward to hearing it!
I hate teasers, but looking forward to the podcast 😊
So looking forward to the critical notifications 🎉
listening to the podcast now. great work guys!! I had no idea how difficult it was to do certain things in iOS. Makes me love my android more, but also brings on a new level of respect for what you guys have to deal with when developing for iOS. Good job on the app!!
I haven't finished it yet as I thankfully don't have an hour long commute but I love this episode. Special thanks to @tough kindle and @vocal shale for coming onto the show.
I hope the new way of inside the app notifications is easily portable. Multiple devices here and don't want to do it more than once...
@inner bison hmmmmm thats a pretty good point I honestly hadn't well considered
I'll probably compromise and have a "export config" button which will output text you can paste right into your config
thanks for pointing that out
also, next time, for anyone here that has great iOS feedback like that, #devs_mobile_apps-archived so I and others see it faster 😃
I'm listening to the episodes from the start and have a question. On episode 12 with remote access you say don't use remote access if you absolutely don't need too. Is there a work around for owntracks or would you recommend using only Bluetooth presence? As my router does not support home assistant yet. @tough kindle @vocal shale
I'd just use OwnTracks and not worry too much. As long as you're using reasonable API password you should be fine - I've been running with remote access for over 18 months and have had no issues.
@blazing prawn @flat ivy
Cert is only valid for www.hasspodcast.io while the site runs on hasspodcast.io
@lapis inlet thanks. I'll update it.
Have to use this certificate as Sonos doesn't support Cloudflare
I understand, but this breaks the site... so yeah
Just request the cert for both names (www and non-www) and problem solved.
Looks like an issue with my host. I've had to escalate it to them for now :(
Podcast players should be ok
Hey @blazing prawn & @flat ivy - loving the podcast, I find it super useful and inspirational so thanks. Quick spotlight idea - I would find a Networking/Remote Access Spotlight super useful, covering how to safely get up and running with remote access .. it’s been a big black hole for me with all the jargon etc and I’ve never quite been sure if I’m doing it right! Would love to cover dns services, NGINX, port forwarding, ports in general etc etc - what do you think?
Also @blazing prawn I’m having trouble accessing the podcast too, on Apple podcasts and through Alexa
Thanks @mossy dune
We'll add that to the list
Yeah this SSL certificate has borked everything. Hopefully should be resolved soon
Thanks @blazing prawn !
Ah always fun - when something unexpected comes along and takes up way more of your day than you want 😱
Haha always the way
The let's encrypt certificate expired a couple of days ago, and their automated system renewed it. For whatever reason it renewed it against the www subdomain, even though I have that disabled (I hate the www subdomain)
Get it together Phil, this pop up is annoying!!! /sarcasm.
Thanks for the podcast and the extra episodes now. Getting my HASS fix weekly is sooo much better.
@mossy dune yeah well add it 😃 thank you for the ideas! And thanks for listening
Awesome thanks @flat ivy - although I guess the Home Assistant Cloud remote access rumours throw another option / curveball in!
🙈 fun and games @blazing prawn - wouldn’t be fun if it was all easy 😜
Yep 😃 still the option for those that don’t want to do it though!
Yeah for sure!
Alright after feeling the pressure from @honest canyon the site should be back up and running. Might have to do some more tinkering, but for now its back.
Love it!
What's everyone's favourite blogs to follow builds?
@blazing prawn and @flat ivy Great new podcast! Thanks for what y'all do!!
Thanks @strong ridge
Great podcast guys!
Cheers @sour pebble
Looking forward to the next one. I have never been a podcast guy before, but this topic got me hooked. Stellar job!
Nice!!
Half-way through the latest episode (short commute). I suppose someone already told you that the ios app works great with lovelace as well?
Yep, @tough kindle hit us up on Twitter 😄
😃
I have been away in Europe for e few weeks and man a lot has changed since I left, thanks to the podcast I'm all caught up love the show guys really love the user chats always pull something from a show that I want to implement into my own setup. Would love to be on the show someday.
Thanks @zealous trail we have a lot of fun doing them!
We'll add you to our list of guests, and try get you on!
Just stopping by to say nice work! Subscribed and auto qued.
Thanks for the nice work guys, started from the begining and it's starting to annoy the passengers in my car on the way to work, but I'm learning alot so theres that 😜
only on episode 15 but getting there 😉
Tell your passengers to get on board, @sly mortar! 😎
Just want to say thanks for the podcast. Really good content and wants me to get into HA faster 😃
Thanks @idle swallow and @sly mortar !
Make sure you check out the new ep!! https://hasspodcast.io/ha037/
It was good! Short but good! 😉
It was perfect in the car driving home 👍
You don't happen to know other good podcasts to listen to in between your own releases?
Haha thanks! I usually listen to a lot of business-ish podcasts too NPR Planet Money being my fav of them. The Smart Home is decent in terms of an industry podcast
@sour pebble I listen to "The Internet of Things - Stacey on IoT", "Home: On - a DIY home automation podcast from The Digital Media Zone" and "Reset"
On one of the episodes i think I heard that someone is compiling a list of HA related sites. Anyone know where that list is? TIA
@fair oyster https://www.awesome-ha.com
Thanks @tranquil kernel!
~repos @fair oyster
@fair oyster You can find a number of people's GitHub repositories at https://github.com/topics/home-assistant-config - these are their working configurations, not simply documentation examples
👍
peeks in... it's been a while
@blazing prawn & @flat ivy - haven't had to tweak the bathroom for a while; and added a bluetooth speaker + web radio playback on it... 😄
(for context go back to ep 29!)
Nice
I just listened to the presence detection episode and they mentioned a sensor based on rf (I think?) That was used to detect people moving around.. I could download the episode again and listen back but does anyone happen to know what it was called?
Just managed to finish every single episode of the podcast. I started them exactly 2 weeks ago today and let me tell you, it takes some doing. Thanks, Guys for the great work and keep it up 😃
@wild cypress that one was Xandem
@final thicket thanks! I assume you're the same HASSCASTS YouTube channel, so kudos to you as well! If you're Keen to come on as a guest, feel free to reach out
Cheers, Phil. I don't quite think I'm ready for that yet (despite the extra coverage it'd get the Channel). To be honest, I have some serious communication issues, in fact it's that serious, I actually have a completely irrational phobia of using phones (Telephobia). but it also means it can take me ages to reply to emails, YouTube comments etc. It's a huge pain in the rectum to be honest, but I suppose I still have it better than some... I digress.
Thanks for the offer, but I'll take a rain-check for the time being. The kids have just gone back to School this week so I've got so much to catch up on it's unbelievable.
All good! Keep up the good work
Just finished my listen through of all 37 episodes since I found HA and thé podcast a few weeks ago. Now i feel all uptodate and just have one question - when is the next episode coming out ? 😃
Should be shortly after 0.82
Yep! Next episode will be slightly delayed as I'll be traveling that weekend, but expect it during the week after the 0.82 release weekend
Take your laptop and Mic on the road with you! Priorities, @blazing prawn ! Priorities!
Hello, I'm reasonably new to Home Assistant (4 months) and I've begun to hear your podcast from the start.
in number 16 you talk about how to drive hassio and one says it can run clean on liunx .. but how?
I've tried but experience that plugins will not start.
there is no guide to how to do it all in your own docker farm i am using portainer
There is the #449717345808547842 channel and a post on how to set up docker @wide wigeon
Hi guys, love the podcasts. How can I get HASSIO to notify me when a new podcast is released?
@digital creek http://hasspodcast.io/feed/podcast
in conjunction with https://www.home-assistant.io/components/feedreader/
@obtuse mesa much appreciated
@blazing prawn - A correction on the 0.82 podcast - TensorFlow is completely local, and the fine researchers from all over have offered a nice list of pre-trained models for out-of-the-box object detection.
Thanks @carmine inlet
I just saw a tweet about it not being supported on #330990055533576204 just yet, because of an ARM issue, so that makes sense that it would be local. I'll add a note to the show notes!
Yeah, we are working on it. Also working to make it easier to setup as it requires some lifting above simple configuration at the moment. I've personally tested on Hassbian, Docker, and venv installs and have helped others setup in different environments.
Nice!
Ooh, another swede on the pod it seems? Will listen tomorrow! 🎉
Swedes assemble!
@blazing prawn an alternative to zigbee2mqtt for more advanced usages of remotes and sensors is deCONZ, works great with Hue motion sensor
@sour pebble yes of course! I've not used it personally, only because it's a locked down system, so adding your own devices isn't as easy as zigbee2mqtt
That is definitely true. The only downside of it, but the guys developing it are really adapting to feedback and adding support to new devices
Great podcast as always guys!
Thanks to @open herald for the heads up, the Home Assistant Podcast is now available on Spotify
https://open.spotify.com/show/6PeAI9SHRZhghU7NRPXvT3?si=o6cEaqgHRjGdJe7AUy-grw
hey Phil, is there a list of all the cool things you and the other hosts say to add to your shopping list?
hey @night oxide I don't think so! If there was such a list, my bank balance would be more worse off
Some of the cool things I've heard so far include the Switchbot, and a Dyson Link fan (which I actually got last week)
Just want to say keep up the good work with the podcasts , I’m currently up to episode 19 and feel blagged that I’m listening to last years Christmas which lists. Lol.
I’m loving the simplicity of hass.io even though I have no real IT background.
Anyone know where that hardware compatibility list mentioned on the podcast can be found?
love the podcast! It appears the Let's encrypyt SSL for hasspodcast.io has expired and I can't download to Podcast Addict 😦 I know I can find a way around this ... I will try again soon. A++
Yeah, my host likes to be a PITA with renewals
Enjoyed the podcast today! Look forward to the next.
@blazing prawn @lucid current hey, sorry I didn't respond earlier, I have started trying to collate a list now. I started part way through and am planning on relistening to them. Here it is anyway. If anyone finds a better link I can merge. https://github.com/sasgoose/HA-to-do
Another great but short one 😃
Not sure how you find content but would be awesome if on next one you could give a shout out for https://community.home-assistant.io/t/resurrected-feature-home-assistant-cli/84107 saying looking for feedback 😃
@idle swallow absolutely! I saw this on Reddit yesterday. Unfortunately we had already recorded, but I'll try get this on in the new year!
cool @blazing prawn - in the new year I hopefully made it even more useful 😃
@blazing prawn why shouldn't it ?
@blazing prawn you should be able to run it anywhere with a python runtime and then connect to your homeassistant running anywhere...as long as your browser can get there hass-cli should be able too.
@idle swallow ohhhh...So it connects via the API! Well that makes sense! Then yes, if you're running Docker in a container you should still be able to use it!
@blazing prawn exactly.
Hi everyone, just found that the HA Community have a Podcast also - super added 👌 -- If anybody are out looking for an alternative podcast app on iOS, I can highly recommend OverCast https://overcast.fm/
Just to add to that, our show can be found on Overcast at https://overcast.fm/itunes1238157855/home-assistant-podcast
Only got into hassio at the beginning of December, really miss the podcast although been using this time to catchup on the old one's - very interesting - looking forward to the new ones coming up
Thanks @wispy zenith
First episode for 2019 will be out in 24 hours 😄 so not too long to wait now
yepee
woot woot!
First episode for 2019 is out! We're premiering right now on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-EJDVqn1Bo and available in your Podcast player soon.
@flat ivy and I are joined by the great @true bear to discuss the data portal, and the 0.85 release!
I know what I'm listening to on my way to work tomorrow
Good one as always.. looks like the holidays didn't have adverse effect on your skills like they did on my belt size
haha 😄
haha you're not alone for the belt-size part @strong ridge
hahahaha
@flat ivy where were you today during the world premiere of episode 41? left Phil on his own to handle us?
you didn't miss a lot.. @blazing prawn was a horrible host 😉
I think there were only 5 or 6 of us in the chat including Phil. Most people, like me, probably weren't expecting it to be done like a live stream
and apparently he is
lol
haha yeah
probably something like 3am on Sunday for him now anyway
haha we're not that out of sync down under
I was a gracious and courtiious host, the likes never before seen
lol
but yeah, the chat was quiet, but my channel isn't huge so to be expected
I also wasn't 100% sure what "premiere" would do once enabled
interesting episode regardless
mt setup is boring
hey, I have some hue bulbs and a few esp sensors.. thanks for having me!
haha everyones is boring to them
^ thats true. Mine's boring too but sometimes people just want to know what others are doing too! regardless of bore-level
my only contribution to Home Assistant has been my rapier sharp sarcastic wit
Perfect, I challenge you to a face-off with me then
hahaha
lol
I really have no idea what I would talk about and I would probably cause a fracture in the finger you use to press the CENSOR button
I make sailors blush
also - trust me, that's a huge challenge for me too haha
its a wonder how I work in a customer facing role
yeah.. How I haven't gotten fired in the last 10 years working retail is beyond me
haha
Maybe one day 😃
@cloud knoll nice epsiode - but you forgot mentionoing @aftership support was added as far as I could follow 😃
@idle swallow nope aftership was definitely discussed! I signed up today for that as well, now just to have some packages to track
hmmm - listened twice and didn't catch it - did hear the 17track update. well I trust you over my own ears 😉
haha its just before my absolute terrible attempt at saying Brottsplatskartan
@blazing prawn let me know how it works - now the base is in I can get to add specific packages similar to 17track.
Thank you for contributing aftership. I had never heard of it, and think I saw in your PR you'l be making changes
haha yes!
@blazing prawn that part I do remember hearing 😉
@blazing prawn yeah, the nice thing compared to 17track is that aftership have an actual api.
Yeah! I've also found aftership seem to support more of my local carriers as well
which is very nice
@blazing prawn downside is that they don't refresh as often as 17track seem to do - but seems sufficient for at least my usecases 😉
Speaking of, what are your use cases?
Apart from being told how many packages are on their way, I am not sure how else to use it (yet)
@blazing prawn tracking swiss post and aliexpress packages 😉
@blazing prawn so for now I just use it for tha t- to see how many packages are outstanding kinda thing - what I want to end up with is that a) I can see the list of packages and hopefully have a link to the page with more details i f need by b) combine it with the imap component to have it automatically add packages I get notified aobut ...
Now, IMAP integration sounds awesome
b is my nirvana since we use online grocery shopping here and for every bag we get a separate tracking which gets quite tedious 😉
yeah, we'll see when I get to it since I was waiting on the main component to get in and in meantime I got hooked on making hass-cli happen ...but its on my todo 😉
brb - gotta take care of kids this morning.
@idle swallow thanks for adding to my todo list!
hey @idle swallow that's a great use case!
@idle swallow just thinking of some feature requests for Aftership. Because you must have heaps of free time (/s) ;)
-
Add a service to Home Assistant which allows for a tracking number to be added to Aftership. Not sure if their API supports this. But would be good to give Home Assistant a tracking number, and it adds it to Aftership. This way, I could have a bot, or even the Home Assistant UI add to Aftership, so I don't have to login to aftership.
-
Add sensors similar to 17track. It would be good to get a sensor so I can get an alert when a package status updates, or when its delivered or on board for delivery
Yeah, just need to figure out best way to have it happen 😃 sooo many different tracking formats - but I’ll start with my own first 😉
#1 should already be there. If not I have it at least in my recent version. Look in services. Can’t check master atm
ooo! Exciting
- The ability for multiple aftership accounts. This way, I could add an aftership account for my Wife, so HASS can send her updates about her packages and not bug me about them
@blazing prawn yeah I want the sensors too - just not sure what approach to take here as 17tracks got veeery noisy for me - but that was because it uses raw ids and the old UI.
Agree, not sure if 17track has the best approach.l Adding an entity, means we don't know the entity ID until the package is in the system, which makes alerting hard, as we'd need to loop over all entities to try detect which sensor is a aftership delivery, or just the front door
@cloud knoll haven’t tried yet but you should be able to add multiple platform sensors just use another name. But yeah - should check. Can you add these in ha issue tracker and cc @idle swallow
For you, of course I can!
😃
I was initially hoping adding entities could let me plot their location on map (similar to forest fire component)
But that requires exact lat/long info which I can’t get reliably
Yeah, and I doubt everyone provides that
I do have a location info that works well on google maps but the various loc name to pat/long apis don’t seem to work equally as well.
And Optimally it would be nicer if ha tracking apis could use a location name instead of me adding that mapping just to AfterShip 😃
That would be kind of cool. In your global HA config you could have a "location mapping translator" setting, and that way you could set for example Google Maps to try and turn human readable addresses into lat/long
that's a cool component @idle swallow .. setup and waiting for the tracking number on my next GHM so I can test it out
Google Home Mini I ordered today
Ah 😃
See https://docs.aftership.com/api/4/trackings/get-trackings-slug-tracking_number for what’s there
Expected delivery is there but I haven’t seen it filled out for my packages yet
So probably varies
Probably depends on the type of service the package is sent via, and the carrier
k.. since I'm in the US, it really comes down to 3.. USPS, UPS and FedEx
and I guess the occasional ChinaPost for aliexpress orders
is the tracking built into your platform?
Not atm but that’s next step. Coredev asked for simpler initial contribution so what you get now is a sensor with number of outstanding deliveries as state
that's cool
Next update I’ll get In some kind of sensor per package
still useful as I can make a notification that alerts me on a change in the number
Yeah I’m looking for input on how to best handle updates as just creating a new sensor everytime aren’t really useful as you need to know the Id. Maybe firing events would be the way.
I'll play with it and see what I can come up with, but for now I am off to bed.. 6am comes early when it's already half past midnight
This is a case where I wish ha had a way to “tag” entities so UI could query more dynamically.
Gnight
Not sure how much you changed the data format from the custom component, but if it is similar and you want to view it in LL, it does work with my list-card https://github.com/custom-cards/list-card
@obtuse mesa yeah I want to add that back in so it works.
if not, no big deal. would probably be better to update the actual aftership card and add the ability to add/remove packages
...i actually think i have a branch laying around where I started that work
Oh? 😃
Ah so here we could add a “add” button 😃
I'll check out the new component tomorrow and go from there. Glad this is core now. Very cool
Note, I would like to still make AfterShip expose Data uis lige your genetic list card can work with. Enables others to make crazy things 😉
Damn now I really need to get the next pr happen 😃
@obtuse mesa for now Core AfterShip is too “dumb” for your components. I’ll ping you when I have something.
Cool. Yeah, reading the docs now. It's just counts right now, is that correct?
Keep me posted. I need some sleep 😃
Yes it is
@flat ivy @blazing prawn I just found kit.com from the show notes. I'm trying to make my own kit, but I must say I find the site very buggy... Something you experienced or just me?
@long herald yeah :/ unfortunately I had to start over a couple of times when I did it - they key is to get it right in one shot lol
@long herald very strange. I haven't experienced that. Kit recently got bought out by Patreon, so hopefully it hasn't been abandoned
Oh! I really like the idea
Yeah they just sent an idea today or yesterday about it
email* about it 😛
omg, that pronunciation of brottsplatskartan ❣ Right now it's only a counter of the amount of nearby reported incidents, but the api contains more information, so I'm hoping that it may be added later
Lol oops that’s what I meant @blazing prawn haha
@long herald you’ll have to teach us how to say Brottsplatskartan at some point if you know!
Haha sure! I'll send you a voice clip 😉
Haha deal!
Is there an 'upcoming topics we'd like to cover' list anywhere?
Rohan and I have one internally. If you'd like to add to that list, please shoot!
Just interested in offering to participate sometime but not whate what I'd talk about! Still new to HA
@wild cypress definitely. I have a list of people who have reached out to us. So I'd be more than happy to add you to that list. Doesn't matter if you're new or "old" to Home Assistant.
Sure. Figured it might be nice for othere women to hear women's voices. If you can think of any back catalog episodes I should go back and listen to, let me know!
Of course, mind if I DM you?
Totally!
@wild cypress Would be great to hear another woman on the pod 😃
@long herald I want you on the podcast too showing off your awesome interfaces!
Those are more visual than audible? 🤔
You’re just jealous @vast crest
@obtuse mesa Haha I think @vast crest has a point :D
Plus I've already been on once!
Ludeeus is away for 3h 29m 31s with a message :point_right: ?
time for a video pod cast edition
i'll need to go back, I think I started listening around 0.75 or so
which episode @long herald ?
@obtuse mesa then I would have to brush my hair!
Ep 25 (about 0.69)
Did I hear someone say Video Podcast?
@long herald confirmed as next @shut skiff guest! 🎉 😜
😂
I’m making the Guest Star calendar right now. What day can you join me @long herald ?
Oh my.. Being on the pod was a big step, I don't know about video 😄
Maybe if we just screen share 😉
that'll work.
What time zone are you in @shut skiff?
Mountain US.
So it's about 2pm now? I'm in Sweden, it's almost 10pm! Probably doable on a weekend
I like to start about 11:30am on Sundays so it'd be maybe 19:30 for you.
Yup. I'm going to bed now, but pm me!
excellent!
Nice!!!
Where is this @shut skiff video??
Which one? I’ve made more than I can remember. Been doing live streams at least once a week for the last few months.
@wild cypress https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7G4tLa4Kt6A9e3hJ-HO8ng
Was there a podcast last week?
@wispy zenith latest episode is episode 41, discussing the 0.85 release
Thank you, Im up to date then.
Hey! I just listened to the podcast. Thanks!
I think I'll save this weeks episode to bring out whenever I'm having a bad day.
No, thank you for all your awesome Lovelace cards @sick mango!
Found out about the podcast on Wednesday, listening through it from the beginning while commuting to learn about the history of the project, thanks for all the work you have put in!
Thanks @crimson terrace !
The old interviews are still highly relevant and very interesting, even if the changes may be outdated.
Great podcast this week! Love the new theme music!
@flat ivy @blazing prawn I found someone for y'all to have on the podcast. He has a small youtube channel that is very new and runs HASS on his sailboat on which he lives Check him out. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3sknm_GUCDESM7EmVvkgzg/featured
Thanks @sick mango
@strong ridge sure!! Got a contact? Just scrubbed through the first few mins of it and he seems great
unfortunately not. I just stumbled across his channel tonight and immediately thought of you guys
@strong ridge will try and reach out and see what we can do! (Oops that was super delayed)
@flat ivy I did some digging around, but he's hidden himself well
Oo
Hmm ok I’ll have a look to but if we can’t we can’t
Hopefully he’s on this channel!
really @flat ivy ? how dare you make me wait that long for a response. geez
Haha I know - work gets in the way sometimes
it's not like you have a life away from hass! oh wait.. you do?
Lol no I really don’t
lol
At least not if you ask my gf
yeah.. the wife gives me grief constantly
lol
should just be able to leave a "Hey!! Contact us!" comment on his latest video
Lol yeah but that’s also somewhat awkward lol
huh, I guess that simple solutions the best. Plus I am used to being awkward
clearly my hat is awesome. All enemies of the hat shall die
lol
Finished those egg whites yet?
@flat ivy @blazing prawn I have a complaint about your latest podcast there was too many Canadians on the show this week
they're probably apologizing for that right now
lol
Ah, that change with darksky windspeed is awful for swedes where we actually only speak about wind speed in m/s 😦
Great episode!
👍 thanks @long herald was a privilege to be on the show this week lot of fun
I've mostly looked at your lovelace but now I have to check out other things in your repo 😃
Yeah. I thought that was an odd change? Who speaks of wind speeds in km/h?
Its funny I built out my lovelace mainly because when I started with lovelace I couldn't stop but I dont use the UI much at all but it is nice when to see it when I do
pretty much only non swedes so it was a weird decision to change to the uncommon km/h
It's a black hole, Lovelace 😄
yours is looking great btw I try to keep track of your changes just in case there is some inspiration in there for me
i honestly don't know how we use wind speeds here
@sick mango wait so you actually use m/s for wind speed? That seems strange to me. Do you measure your car speed in m/s too?
No. That's km/h. I don't know why it's m/s really, just tradition, I guess...
Huh, fair enough!
Trying to look it up, and the Swedish Meteorological Institute just mentions the difference and (unsurprisingly) says that m/s is the correct SI unit and everyone else is wrong...
In science you always use scientific notation from the base si-unit. And because 1 km is just 1*10:3: m it just makes sense to always use the base unit so you dont have to convert the values when actually calculating with them.
Its actually just tradition for car related stuff to use km/h.
@blazing prawn same for Norway,we have no Idea if it is a breeze or a typhoon when people note wind speed in km/h 😂
@flat ivy @blazing prawn You should have @iron egret @sour pebble and @sick mango on the show sometime!
Swedish developers unite 😃
@long herald 🤟🏻
Yes I'd be keen to hear from our 🇸🇪 team
@long herald consider them added to my hit list!
you will have to record them in m/s though
Miles per hour!!!! Everyone else is wrong. 😂
Fun Fact: The US measurements including miles, temperatures, weights etc are all calibrated against the metric system. The US government has the official weights and measures, as distrubuted around the world for the metric system, which it regularly has to calibrate back.
Lol. Does not surprise me one bit
The only people who seem to know what they are doing when it comes to this stuff are the potheads. Marijuana had been sold by the kilo since I was in school in the 80s
LOL that's awesome
Ok. I had it right. 2.2 pounds to the kilogram
Whew. Thought I had lost my touch for a sec
I gotta remember my kilos for when I retire and am no longer subject to drug testing 🤣
ActuallyAckshuyally, there are no official weights or measures anymore. The reference meter was retired long ago and replaced by the wavelength of light from burning a certain atom, and the kilogram was finally retired in november last year.
But with those incredibly strict definitions of the SI units, it's really kind of funny that the inch e.g. is defined as exactly 25.4 mm.
Listening to the last podcast, and wondering how long before there will be a Cloud API "graveyard" on the site!
Or a weekly segment. A short jingle and "This week, the following services have shut down, leaving users stranded:"
@sick mango @tepid vapor heh - you guys joke but that’s what feels like is happening
You can either laugh or cry about it. I know which I prefer.
It possibly wouldn't be a bad idea to add so that next time someone asks me why I prefer avoid "The Cloud" where possible, there's a canonical source to point them at!
