Wait you should do is decide what kind of project you want

Here are your options

1. Have a free and open-source project
2. Have a paid or freemium, and closed-source project

Either way you decide is perfectly acceptable and valid

The problem is less the design philosophy of having paid plugins or having an open source plugin, but rather the problem lies in having both things at one time

1. make it open source, which means it's pretty much impossible to enforce DRM

• you don't get money but ppl will appreciate the transparency and users
• make it closed-source, which means you can't have it posted here, but you can sell it
  • likely less users but profit

Yep, you can make your plugin modular and distribute the closed-source add-ons in a way that's separate from official LabAPI forums, as long as the free features remain open source

Again, you must have the core part of the plugin be fully open source, with all files included in the repository
You can create a separate project as an add-on to the core plugin, and put the add-on(s) behind a paywall

If you make the core plugin easy to integrate your add-ons with, your job will be easier

Yeah this is just largely a community that survives off of volunteer work, most every dev is not paid

It's hard trying to work a payment model into a place that doesn't use it
