a serious acid

but otherwise its a pretty straight forward process

(i made mine from rebar that i had forged flat)

Once you have a blank cut out in the shape / size you want (using a hack saw, angle grinder, and or files) you then must polish one face.

Once you have your polished blank, then you get to do the actual marking

For this, I used nail polish, with just a little acetone mixed in to thin it a little bit

Then you get a small paint brush and paint the design you like.

If you mess up you can get some acetone on a wrag and wipe it off, or just soak it and try again. Make sure you really get it all off though because if it isn’t it will interfere in the etching process

But then comes the etch. There are actually a few ways to actually do this but I prefer the ferric chloride simply because of its power

You can use some saltwater, electrodes, and a battery as well. It might take longer and need babysitting though.

Let it etch for an hour (assuming you didn’t touch it during painting because again, the most important thing is the cleanliness and absence of oils and oxides)

Continue checking on it, if you go longer you may get deeper etches and a more dramatic result, however be careful because the nail polish may not hold up against the acid for too long. The nice thing is that this is all relatively cheap and easy to do, so I’d suggest making template blanks to play with and test to get familiar with what you’re after.

Once it’s done etching, you pull it out of the acid and neutralize it in a base. Windex or baking soda and water are great. If you use windex go fuckin ham on it though. Any area with acid still active will rust like crazy really fast.

Get your acetone and clean off the nail polish and admire your craftsmanship!
