Whats wrong with the Mojang screen?

so it happens with every version, right?

have you ever used the mojang launcher to play below 1.17?

open up instance settings, and change the java location path to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Minecraft Launcher\runtime\jre-legacy\windows-x64\jre-legacy\bin\java.exe

check if it exists for you at the same location

if not, you could look for the minecraft launcher installation folder in other locations

in case you hate the official minecraft launcher, here's an alternative solution:

  1. download java 8u51 from https://archive.org/download/Java_8_update_51/jre-8u51-windows-x64.zip and unzip it anywhere you like. for the sake of this example, i will use C:\program files\java\jre8u51\
  2. open the launcher, go to instance settings and change the "Java executable path" to C:\program files\java\jre8u51\bin\java.exe, according to the path you unzipped the archive into
