Each time merchants arrive in my fortress they simply remain in the depot forever. Even after I've gotten the notification that they have departed they just remain. I have to demolish my trade depot every time I want to receive a caravan.

This may be related to an old bug involving traders getting spooked by mobs harassing your fort. They'll flee from the depot until the danger is passed but then they'll sort of get stuck in that state. It happened once to me in this version already. Aside from demolishing your trade depot, you can forbid and unforbid it and they'll get unstuck, but they may leave all of their stuff sitting in the depot. As a temporary fix, try constructing your trade depot underground or build a roof over it to keep vultures and such from spooking them.

You know there are keas which keep attacking nearby, ive been trying to station guards there to help but it sounds to me like you might be right

Just had this one happen in my game. A flock of keas started harassing my pasture just as the merchants started departing, and my trade depot is right next to the pasture. So i get to appropriate all the trader's goods but take a reputation hit with mountainhome 😦

Yeah I've inherited a lot of goods by disassembling trade depots...

At first I thought it was the result of my dwarves trading with the depot on their own since it was mostly cheese

Will I be at risk of being invaded because I upset other kingdoms because I have to keep doing this?

you shouldnt unless you tried to trade something that upsets them

the elves would be the only ones iirc, but that would be based on how many trees you chop by the time they see you next

Right I did just experience that where I tried to trade some elves some wooden bolts which was a whoopsie
