I also encountered this. Was confused before I realized it had locked out the button. I agree it should be unlocked.

Agreed; I tripped over this as well and found it annoying, particularly since there's no way to reverse having dug out native stone (so that it can be engraved later). Coming from classic, I expected the eraser to be provided along with the pencil.
