I mean, sorta, lol. I'm building a split custom keyboard, macropads, etc. I plan to have on my desk XD

Nice, I am currently planning out all the parts for my mechanical keyboard

jolly shell
#

Noice. Going for a standard layout or a custom one?

burnt raft
#

Going for a standard 75% layout

#

Thought for my first board it will be best to not go fully custom

jolly shell
#

Haha, simplifies things if you keep it simple. I'm crazy and going whole hog

#

Still debating if my split keyboard will be 2 separate half keyboards, or be connected and act as one

burnt raft
#

I would make them separate to make the cables running up your desk symmetrical

jolly shell
#

Gonna attach them to my chair XD

burnt raft
#

In that case make it all 1 so you only need 1 cable coming off the chair

jolly shell
#

True true...

burnt raft
#

Are you using standard firmware or writing your own?

jolly shell
#

Gonna use CircuitPython and the Key Matrix library

#

Fairly simple on the software side

#

Actually, glad I ordered extra Ortho boards, I just realized I want to have some macro keys on there and not just the standard 104 keys, lol

burnt raft
#

How hard is it to not use a standard pcb and it it yourself instead?

#

I kind of want to do it as I want to program it myself in circuitpython but worried it is going to be too difficult to assemble as my first board

jolly shell
#

If you're using the Ortho snap-aparts, it should be pretty easy, especially if you're using them in the ortholinear format

burnt raft
#

If I don't go ortholinear will the snap aparts still work ok with some extra soldering?

jolly shell
#

Some extra soldering, unless you make each row its own matrix

#

I need to double check, but from what I understand, you can basically just solder between the snap points so it electrically operates the same

#

Thanks for the help, I think you have tempted me into buying more adafruit products

jolly shell
#

Mwahahahaha, the cycle continues!

#

I'll be getting my other Ortho boards tomorrow, so maybe by this weekend I'll have my keyboard running if not complete, so feel free to ping me if you're curious [and watch the #help-with-circuitpython for my asking for help, lol]
