You're doing fine with it 🙂 You're 100% correct, grounds do need to be connected together. The connection between the Matrix Portal S3 and the LED matrix panel has already done that for you, so you're set there, that shouldn't be an issue.

My top guesses are that there's a memory leak (objects being created and never freed) so you run out of memory, or a logic issue or crash... depending on how the code goes these kinds of things can happen at pretty random-seeming times.

Monitoring the USB port should let you know for sure. I hope it crashes quickly for you 🙂
