is this at home, at work, at school?
home
do you have just one router or access point? Where did it come from?
so, if you look on, say, your phone, do you see more than one strong local network, maybe with similar names? Like SOMETHING and SOMETHING_5G?
yes
could you give the names? You can obfuscate part of it, but I'd like to see the suffixes on the names, etc.
DIIF-5
change a few letters or numbers if you wish
DIIF-YVAD
and is there DIIF also?
so you're trying to connect to DIIF-5? Can you connect to DIIF-YVAD instead?
how do you know DIIF-5 is 5 GHz only?
it shows on my phone
it says nothing about that one, probably because I haven't connected to it before
it uses wifi 4 it says
do you have android or iphone
so who administers DIIF-YVAD: your roomates, your parents, your children?
no idea, it has appeared rather recently
there used to be DIIF-5 (my network) and DIIF
eh, not sure I understand, this is a router in your own home?
yes
and you live there with other people?
in an apartment building or something? The router is not physically in your apartment?
it's shared among all the tenants??
I live in a triplex, the router is in my portion of the triplex
there are multiple family members in my side using my network
so who pays the bills for the internet service?
my parents
so would they be the ones who might have changed the name of the network?
but someone changed it, your sibling, your cousin??
nope
someone has the admin passowrd
yes
and who is that person?
we all have it
you are reffering to the password you put in to connect to the wifi network right?
no, the password to log into the router itself to change its settings
sometimes it's on a sticker on the router
I mean, if the network changed, someone changed it, who might that be?
does "YVAD" mean anything?
well the network we have been using hasn't been changed
no
but you said it changed from "DIIF" to "DIIF-YVAD" at some point. Was that when the router got changed out by the company or anything?
no, I said there used to be 2 networks: "DIIF-5" (the one we are still using) and "DIFF"
"DIIF" dissapeared fully and "DIIF-5" remained
and recently "DIFF-YVAD" appeared
so who might possibly have made that change? Any other relative who is computer savvy?
does anyone else in the triplex use DIIF-YVAD, or do you all use DIIF-5?
from the same wifi provider
only my family uses "DIFF-5"
the others use their own networks
do they all start with "DIIF", or do they have other names?
there are other names
now that I look at it
almost all networks have a doppelganger
ok, so my guess is that "DIIF" is your own router. You could test that by unplugging it temporarily to see if "DIIF-YVAD" disappears. And you could log into the router if you can find the password, and reset the password for "DIIF-YVAD", and check whether it's a 2.4GHz network.
should you ask someone before doing this? Do you have any computer-savvy siblings?
nope
what shows up on the pi when you run the scan?
I can just try unplugging the router and seeing what networks dissapear
nmcli dev wifi list?
yes
11 networks
ok, so at least some networks are 2.4
yes
but question is which of the 11 is yours?
but DIIF-5 appeared on the Pi?
i thought maybe you meant it DID show up
no
if it shows up on the pi, then it's not a 5GHz wifi
it doesn't show up
so you see DIFF-YVAD, and you saw DIIF briefly??
no another network named DIIF-[and something else here] appeared
not just DIIF
DIIF-eQ5c
could be a range issue - too far away from router
yes
so can't I just turn my network into 2.4
if I were to guess I'd say no because my network has a [5G] next to it while some others have [5G/2.4G]
if you can (and know how to) access the router, then yes, you should be able to enable 2.4GHz
and set network name, password, etc.
if you do not have access to the router, then someone else will need to help with that
you can also just try connecting to one of the wifi names that does show up on the pi when scanning
assuming one of those has no password
ok, check whether 2.4GHz is disabled
internet facing, yes. local facing, generally no - there are commonly used local addresses.
so looking at this thing
turns out
both DIIF-5 and DIIF-YVAD are on the same ip adress that I got off the router
so I assume that means both are mine
and I can change the password of both networks
also
DIIF-YVAD is 2.4 g
so I can just change the password and connect the pi to it
try it
should I check if any devices are connected to it
probably. if others use it. or for your stuff.
actually I don't have access to that since I don't know the current password
so ima change it and see if anything comes up
if you do:
sudo nmcli --ask dev wifi connect DIIF-YVAD
and it asks for a password, then the pi is at least attempting to connect to it
